Trump Backs ICE Traffic Stops
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has defended Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) traffic stops, insisting the agency should continue carrying out enforcement operations despite recent fatal shootings involving law enforcement officers. Speaking after the incidents, Trump said officers should not retreat from their duties because of violent attacks. He argued that enforcing immigration laws remains essential to national security and public safety, adding that criminals should not be allowed to intimidate federal agencies through acts of violence.
The remarks came amid renewed debate over ICE's enforcement tactics and the risks faced by officers during field operations. Critics have questioned the agency's methods, while supporters say strong immigration enforcement is necessary to maintain law and order. Federal authorities are continuing to investigate the fatal shootings that prompted the discussion. Trump expressed condolences to the families of the victims and praised law enforcement personnel for serving in dangerous conditions. His comments reaffirm the administration's commitment to maintaining strict immigration enforcement while promising continued support for officers carrying out their duties across the United States.
Trump: Iran Better Behave
The United States said it had launched fresh strikes against Iran on Wednesday evening as President Donald Trump warned Tehran it "better behave".
The US military said "Iranian military capabilities used to threaten vessels" moving through the Strait of Hormuz had been targeted, and that it had separately fired on a ship attempting to violate its renewed blockade of Iran's ports.
It came after Iran claimed it had struck US military targets in the region, including in Bahrain and Kuwait, as a fifth day of renewed hostilities strained their preliminary deal to end the war.
Iran's top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, meanwhile told state media Tehran had "no reason" to abide by the deal if it did benefit from it. Trump had threatened late on Tuesday to attack bridges and power plants should Iran not return to talks next week.
Trump to Feature on New $1 Gold Coin
Asked by reporters late on Wednesday whether he would give a deadline before doing so, he responded: "I don't like giving deadlines, but they pretty much know, they know the story... they better behave."
He later told delegates at a defence summit that Iran was "not happy right now".
"They want to settle so badly. They don't like what we're doing," he said. "We'll find out whether we want to settle with them or if we just finish it off."
The United States has unveiled the design of a new $1 gold coin featuring the image of President Donald Trump, marking a significant addition to the country's commemorative coin collection. The newly released design has generated widespread public interest and sparked political debate across the nation.
Officials said the coin is intended to honour Trump's presidency and his contributions to the country. Images of the proposed design were released this week, showing Trump's portrait prominently displayed on one side of the coin.
Supporters have welcomed the move as a tribute to Trump's leadership, while critics have questioned the decision, making the coin a fresh point of political discussion. The announcement has quickly gained attention on social media and among collectors.
"Are You Muslim?" Indian Man Stabbed 15 Times In US Mall
What began as an ordinary workday turned into a nightmare for an Indian immigrant whose only "mistake" was answering a simple question truthfully. Moments after saying he was a Muslim from India, Sohail was brutally stabbed multiple times in a shocking attack that has left his family and community devastated.
The incident occurred at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah, where 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen allegedly approached Sohail at his kiosk, asked where he was from and whether he was Muslim, then suddenly launched a knife attack. According to investigators,
48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen told investigators he deliberately targeted the victim because he was Muslim and that he "intends to kill Muslims".
Larsen later admitted he deliberately targeted the victim because of his faith and claimed he intended to kill Muslims.
Sohail was stabbed 15
and has undergone multiple surgeries. He remains in critical condition. Friends
say he is the sole breadwinner for his wife and two young children, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking. A fundraising campaign has been launched to support the family during his recovery.
Several courageous bystanders rushed to intervene, overpowering the attacker before police arrived, preventing what authorities believe could have become an even deadlier assault. Larsen has been charged with attempted murder and weapons-related offences. The attack has reignited concerns over rising anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States. Community leaders condemned the violence, saying there is no place for hatred or religious intolerance. For Sohail's family, however, the scars of that horrific day will last far beyond the courtroom.

18 Years Later, He Came Home
After spending nearly two decades building a successful career in the United States, an Indian-origin technology professional has made an emotional return to India — not for a job opportunity or personal ambition, but for the people who mattered most: his ageing parents.
The NRI techie, who had lived and worked in the US for 18 years, decided that time with his parents was more valuable than professional achievements. Sharing his feelings after returning, he said the moment felt unreal, as he finally reunited with his family after years of living thousands of miles away.
Like many Indians who move abroad for better career prospects, he had spent years balancing professional responsibilities with the emotional distance of being away from his loved ones. While technology, video calls, and occasional visits helped him stay connected, he realized that some moments in life cannot be replaced by a screen.
Indian Truck Driver Gets 5 Years in US Crash Case
Washington: A 22-year-old Indian-origin truck driver-- an illegal immigrant in the US--who caused an eight-vehicle collision on an Ontario freeway in the United States has been sentenced to nearly five years in state prison. Three people were killed, and four others were injured in the collision on the San Bernardino County freeway in October of last year after Jashanpreet Singh failed to hit his brakes in slowing traffic.
His decision highlights the emotional struggles faced by many members of the Indian diaspora who live abroad while their parents grow older back home. The comforts and opportunities of life overseas often come with the difficult reality of missing family milestones and everyday moments.
For his parents, his return marked the fulfilment of a long-awaited dream — having their son close to them again. For him, it was a reminder that success is not measured only by career growth or financial achievements, but also by the relationships and memories that give life meaning.
His homecoming has touched many hearts, especially among NRI families who understand the challenge of choosing between a global career and family responsibilities.
After 18 years away, he has chosen to come back to his roots, proving that sometimes the greatest journey is not towards a new destination, but back home.
Dhaka Signals Possible Review of Death Row Verdict
Bangladesh has indicated that the death sentence against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina could be reconsidered if she returns to the country, according to government statements. The development comes amid discussions
over her possible return following a period of political uncertainty. Officials said legal options could be explored under existing laws if Hasina chooses to come back. The statement has drawn attention as the former leader faces serious legal challenges related to cases filed after her departure from power. Hasina’s supporters have criticized the proceedings, while the interim authorities have maintained that the legal process is being followed. Her potential return could have major political implications for Bangladesh, where tensions remain high between rival political groups.
Trump pays writer E. Jean Carroll $5.6 million in sexual abuse, defamation case
US President Donald Trump has paid more than $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll after the Supreme Court allowed a civil jury verdict holding him liable for sexual abuse and defamation to remain in effect.
The payment, which includes the $5 million jury award along with accumulated interest, was released from an escrow account where the funds had been kept since the 2023 verdict. Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan confirmed the payment, saying they were pleased that the damages had finally been received. Carroll later announced the development on Substack, writing that “the eagle has landed.”
The case dates back to allegations that Trump sexually assaulted Carroll in a New York department store dressing room in 1996. Carroll later wrote about the incident in her 2019 memoir,
after which Trump publicly denied the accusation and made statements that led to a defamation lawsuit.
A New York jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, ordering him to pay damages. Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, calling Carroll’s claims false, and his

IBM's Biggest Stock Crash in 58 Years

However, Trump’s attorneys are still pursuing further legal action. He is also appealing a separate $83 million defamation award granted to Carroll by another Manhattan jury in 2024. The case remains one of the most closely watched legal battles involving a US president.
IBM faced one of its biggest market shocks in decades after its shares plunged, wiping out nearly $70 billion in market value. The sharp decline came as investors raised concerns over the company’s growth outlook and the pace of returns from its artificial intelligence and cloud businesses.

Only 8% of Indians Hold Passports
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has clarified that an Indian passport is a travel document issued to regulate the departure of Indian citizens and should not be treated as proof of citizenship.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the document is issued under the Passports Act, 1967, and identifies nationality but does not establish citizenship.
The clarification comes amid debate over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The government also noted that fewer than 8% of Indians currently hold a passport, making it unsuitable as a universal proof of citizenship.
Trump Urges Israel to Pull Troops From Syria, Lebanon
Special Correspondence | Washington
US President Donald Trump has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to withdraw Israeli forces from parts of Syria and Lebanon, warning that their continued presence could increase tensions in the Middle East. During a phone conversation, Trump reportedly told Netanyahu that local populations do not want foreign troops in their areas and that reducing military deployment could help prevent further escalation. The call came shortly after Trump’s meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa during the NATO summit in Turkey.
The US administration has been pushing for a security arrangement between Israel and Syria, but Netanyahu’s government has resisted withdrawing from strategic areas, citing national security concerns. With elections approaching in Israel, Netanyahu faces growing political pressure from both security supporters and international allies. The situation highlights the delicate balance between regional stability efforts and Israel’s demand for stronger border protections.
Trump Drops Hormuz Cargo Fee Threat
In a major policy shift, US President Donald Trump has abandoned plans to impose a 20% fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz, choosing negotiations and strategic partnerships with Gulf nations over additional trade measures.
The decision comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, where any escalation involving Iran and regional powers could have wider economic and security consequences.
The United States has been closely monitoring developments around the Strait of Hormuz, given its importance to global trade and energy stability.
Officials said the administration will continue working with Gulf nations to strengthen maritime security and ensure the uninterrupted flow of commercial shipping. The focus will remain on preventing threats while avoiding measures that could unnecessarily increase costs for international businesses and consumers.
Energy markets had been closely watching the proposed fee, as analysts warned that additional charges on cargo passing through the region could have pushed up transportation costs and affected oil prices. The withdrawal of the plan has been welcomed by traders seeking greater stability in global energy supplies.
US Eases 500% Russian Oil Tariff Threat, Relief for India & China
The United States has stepped back from its proposed 500% tariff threat on countries buying Russian oil, bringing relief to major importers including India and China. The move reduces concerns over a possible disruption in global energy markets and rising fuel prices.
The proposed tariff was aimed at
pressuring Russia over its ongoing geopolitical actions by targeting nations that continue purchasing Russian crude. India and China, among the world’s largest energy consumers, had faced the risk of economic impact due to their significant Russian oil imports.
The easing of the threat signals a shift toward diplomatic engagement while maintaining pressure on Moscow through economic measures. Energy analysts believe the decision could help stabilize global oil markets and provide greater certainty for traders and consumers.
However, Washington has indicated that future actions will depend on Russia’s response to international negotiations and broader geopolitical developments.
US to Withdraw All Troops from Iraq After 23 Years
The United States will completely withdraw its military forces from Iraq by September 2026, marking the end of a 23-year-long military presence that began with the 2003 invasion to remove Saddam Hussein’s regime.
The announcement was made after a White House meeting between US President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi. Trump said future relations between the two nations would focus on economic cooperation, trade, and investment rather than military involvement.
The withdrawal marks a major shift in America’s Middle East strategy. US forces had returned to Iraq in 2014 to support the fight against ISIS, with around 2,500 troops stationed there in recent years.
4 Influencers Charged Over Gadkari Image Row
Four influencers — Rajiv Dixit, Vijay Patel, Akash Chopra and Rohit Sharma — have been charged for allegedly tarnishing Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s image over the E20 petrol controversy. The case relates to social media posts that authorities claim spread misleading information about the ethanol-blended fuel policy. Officials said the action was taken after complaints regarding the online content. The influencers have denied the allegations, and the matter is currently under investigation.
Americans Turn to Credit Cards as Grocery Costs Surge
Millions of Americans are increasingly relying on credit cards and savings to manage everyday grocery expenses as food prices continue to rise, according to a new study by the Urban Institute.
The research found that many working-age adults are struggling to afford basic necessities, with a significant number using credit cards to purchase groceries. Around one-fourth of those using credit cards for food expenses are finding it difficult to pay their bills on time, pushing some families into a cycle of debt.
Grocery prices in the US have increased by nearly 32% over the past five years, putting additional
pressure on low and middle-income households. Rising inflation, higher fuel costs, and increased living expenses have further reduced consumers’ purchasing power. Experts warn that depending on credit for essential items like food
can create long-term financial challenges. While some Americans are managing payments responsibly, many families are facing growing economic pressure as the cost of daily living continues to climb.

The UAE is planning a new port on its eastern coast to reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz amid rising regional tensions. The move comes after concerns over possible disruptions to shipping routes due to conflicts and security threats in the Gulf. Officials believe the project will strengthen the UAE’s supply chain security and protect vital exports.

Trump Hit as US Refunds $81B Tariffs
The US government has refunded $81 billion in tariffs collected under President Donald Trump’s disputed trade policy after the Supreme Court ruled that a major portion of the levies was unlawful. The repayments were made to companies that paid additional import duties during the trade dispute, with nearly $71 billion returned in May and June alone. The decision represents a major setback for Trump’s tariff strategy, which he promoted as a way to protect American industries, encourage domestic manufacturing and reduce the federal budget deficit. The court ruling has also reduced the financial gains expected from tariff collections. The refunds come as the US budget deficit continues to widen, with

Despite the setback, the Trump administration is preparing a new round of tariffs after the temporary 10% global duty expires later this month. Proposed measures could target countries including India, China, Japan, the UK and Taiwan. The White House has defended the tariff policy, arguing that it protects American jobs and counters unfair trade practices. Trump has also warned countries imposing digital taxes on US technology companies of possible additional tariffs, keeping global trade tensions high.

oil and gas exports passes, has become the latest flashpoint in the escalating crisis. In response, the United States launched a fresh wave of military strikes on Iranian targets, saying the action was aimed at protecting commercial shipping and freedom of navigation. The rapidly worsening confrontation has heightened fears of a wider regional conflict and sent shockwaves through global energy markets. International leaders have urged both sides to exercise restraint, while diplomatic efforts continue to prevent further escalation and restore safe passage through one of the world's busiest maritime routes.

Sidharth Malhotra's 'VVAN' Release Postponed to Avoid Box Office Clash
The makers of VVAN, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia, have postponed the film's theatrical release from August 28 to September 28, giving it a wider release window and avoiding a high-profile box office clash. The decision comes as Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, featuring Yash and Kiara Advani, is scheduled to hit theatres around the same period, while Itha, starring Shraddha Kapoor, is also set for release. By shifting its release date, the producers aim to avoid direct competition and maximise the film's commercial prospects.
Produced by Balaji Telefilms, VVAN also features Maniesh Paul, Sunil Grover, Shweta Tiwari and Anup Soni in prominent roles. The film is directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra and Arunabh Kumar. The revised release date also means Sidharth Malhotra's film will no longer compete at the box office with a film starring his wife, Kiara Advani. Industry observers believe the strategic postponement could help VVAN attract a larger audience by avoiding a three-way clash during one of the year's busiest release windows.

Payal Rohatgi began her career with Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai (2002) and was then seen in Plan (2004), Rakht (2004), 36 China Town (2006) etc. At the same time, she appeared in lead roles in films like Tauba Tauba (2004), Chetna: The Excitement (2005), Fun - Can Be Dangerous Sometimes (2005) etc. These films were fronted by her, and they drew an audience thanks to her presence. In fact, Tauba Tauba was a decent hit and this writer remembers its shows going house-full in its third week at Gaiety-Galaxy's Gossip theatre. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Payal Rohatgi opened up about these films and a lot more.
Payal Rohatgi said, “What happened was that yes, I was the face of these films. But at that time, there was no social media. I am an outsider with no film background. I had no idea about placement, positioning, PR, strategy etc. One of my films (Chetna: The Excitement) was directed by Partho Ghosh, who had made films with Madhuri Dixit in the past. Lekin in filmon ki grading ko leke gadbad ho jaati thi. We should have been careful, but then, I had no idea about A-grade, B-grade etc.”
She continued, “Mahesh Bhatt was in the news at that time for making bold and hot movies. Many producers were inspired by those films. At one point, I got some 4-5 films which were glamorous and fronted by me. It was nice because at that point, I really felt like I had become a big star. Mere naam se picturein release ho rahi thi theatre ke andar. However, it’s a journey. It's only when you become a part of the journey that you understand its graph. It was a nice phase and I hope to do some good work as an actor once again. I believe I deserve something substantial at this stage.”
Despite the grading of these films, the film industry did notice her, evident by the fact that she got a chance to work in bigticket movies like Corporate and 36 China Town. Payal Rohatgi explained, “What happens is that you tend to become boisterous and arrogant. Yeh success ka stage chanchal hota hai. After success, you will see failure.

Trump says he will not sign landmark housing bill in protest
President Donald Trump has said he will not sign a bipartisan housing bill into law in protest over the US Senate's failure to pass voter ID legislation.

Iran Warns of 'Reciprocal Action'
Tehran vows a proportional response after Trump says prospects for a nuclear deal are over.
Iran has warned the United States of "reciprocal action" after President Donald Trump declared that prospects for a new nuclear agreement with Tehran were effectively over. Iranian officials said any hostile move by Washington would be met with a proportional response, raising fresh concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East. Trump's remarks came amid renewed disputes over Iran's nuclear program and regional security. While the US has maintained pressure through sanctions and military deployments, Iran insists it will defend its sovereignty against any aggression. The latest exchange has intensified fears of further confrontation, even as diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions continue.
Trump: 'Bomb Them' If I'm Killed
President says the U.S. should "bomb them at levels never seen before" if Iran succeeds in assassinating him, amid heightened regional tensions.
President Donald Trump has said he has already left instructions for how the United States should respond if Iran succeeds in assassinating him, warning that such an attack would trigger an overwhelming military retaliation.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump said the US should "bomb them at levels never seen before" if Iran were responsible for his assassination. The remarks come amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran and longstanding US concerns over alleged Iranian threats against Trump following the 2020 US airstrike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
US intelligence and law enforcement agencies have previously
said they have disrupted alleged Iranian plots targeting current and former American officials. Iran has repeatedly denied seeking to assassinate Trump.
Trump's latest comments are expected to further heighten already strained relations between the two countries. While the White House has not released additional details about the reported "instructions," the President said he wanted any future US response to be swift and decisive.
The remarks come as the US continues to monitor regional security developments in the Middle East, with officials warning that tensions remain high despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider conflict.
President says he has left instructions for an unprecedented US military response if Iran assassinates him.
Texas City Sues Motel Over Alleged Criminal Activity
The City of Fort Worth has filed a lawsuit against the owner of Central Motel, alleging the property has become a hotspot for persistent criminal activity and poses a threat to public safety.
According to court filings, police have responded to more than 600 calls at the motel since 2024, involving incidents including homicide, drug offenses, weapons violations, assaults, theft, prostitution and vandalism. City officials say the repeated incidents have placed a heavy burden on law enforcement resources.
The lawsuit alleges the city repeatedly urged the owner to improve security by hiring guards and strengthening property management but saw little progress. Fort Worth is now seeking a temporary injunction requiring immediate security upgrades or the motel's temporary closure while the case is pending. Officials also warned that continued non-compliance could result in the property's occupancy certificate being revoked.
AI to Replace Coding: Anthropic CEO

While he believes human expertise will remain important for oversight, creativity, and complex problemsolving, he expects AI to automate much of the coding process in the coming years, fundamentally reshaping the software industry.

C-Stores Gain Profit Edge with Grubhub and DoorDash POS Integration
HiIndia Newsdesk
Consumers expect everything on demand. "Convenience" no longer means just a store on the corner — it means having that store's entire inventory available on a smartphone, ready for delivery in minutes. The definition has shifted, and stores that adapt are capturing revenue that others leave on the table.
Delivery isn't reserved for pizza joints and Chinese takeout anymore. Convenience stores are seeing a surge in demand for late-night snacks, cold beverages, phone chargers, overthe-counter medicine, and everyday essentials. When someone needs ibuprofen at 11 p.m. or a bag of ice for an impromptu party, they're not driving anywhere — they're opening an app. Independent c-store owners can tap into this revenue stream without overhauling their operations. The key is direct pointof-sale integration with delivery giants like DoorDash and Grubhub. When your POS system talks directly to these platforms, you gain access to millions of potential customers while keeping your workflow simple and your data accurate.
The High Cost of "Tablet Fatigue"
Walk behind the counter at a store using traditional third-party delivery setups, and you'll likely see the problem immediately: tablets. Multiple tablets or phones, each one tied to a different delivery app, all competing for space on an already crowded checkout counter. The chaos is predictable. Cashiers get distracted bouncing between devices. Orders come in on one tablet while a line of in-store customers waits. Staff manually punch delivery orders into the register, creating opportunities for data entry errors and pricing mistakes. The checkout experience suffers for everyone — delivery customers and walk-ins alike.
But the biggest profit killer lies in the inventory disconnect. When delivery apps don't sync with your store inventory,

customers order items you've already sold out of. The result? Canceled orders, refund requests, and negative reviews. A customer who orders a six-pack of their favorite beer and then receives a cancellation notice won't come back. Your store's reputation takes a hit for a problem that better technology could have prevented entirely.
Seamless POS Integration Changes the Game
National Retail Solutions (NRS) built a solution that eliminates tablet chaos and inventory headaches. NRS connects Grubhub and DoorDash directly into its Order Management platform, turning fragmented delivery operations into a streamlined, unified system.
All third-party delivery orders flow into a single, familiar interface — the same one your staff already uses for in-store sales. No more switching between tablets. No more manual re-entry. Orders appear, get fulfilled, and sync automatically. The real power comes from real-time data syncing. When you update a price
in your POS, the change is reflected in your DoorDash and Grubhub menus almost immediately. When inventory runs low, the system adjusts availability so customers can't order what you don't have. No more apologetic cancellation messages. No more frustrated delivery customers leaving one-star reviews. Training becomes dramatically simpler, too. Instead of teaching new hires how to operate three or four different systems, you train them on one. Fewer systems mean fewer mistakes, faster onboarding, and employees who can focus on serving customers rather than troubleshooting technology.
Completing the Digital Picture
DoorDash and Grubhub excel at putting your store in front of new local customers — people who might never have discovered you otherwise. But relying solely on third-party platforms means paying their fees on every order and playing by their rules.
A complete digital strategy includes an owned channel: your own branded online storefront where customers
can order directly. NRS offers a fully integrated ecommerce package that includes custom websites and the BOSS Local Shopping app. The critical advantage? Everything runs through the exact same POS system. Whether a customer finds you on Grubhub, orders through DoorDash, or visits your store's website directly, every transaction flows into one centralized hub. Inventory stays accurate across all channels. Pricing remains consistent. Reporting captures the full picture of your sales, not just fragments scattered across disconnected platforms.
You maintain total control while still benefiting from the massive customer reach that third-party delivery apps provide.
Driving ROI and Taking the Next Step
The numbers make a compelling case. Over 80% of independent businesses report strong return on investment when partnering with delivery services like Grubhub — especially when using integrated tools that eliminate operational friction and inventory errors.
For years, advanced delivery capabilities were reserved for major corporate chains with custom-built technology and dedicated IT teams. Independent retailers watched from the sidelines while big-box competitors captured the growing delivery market.
That gap has closed. With NRS POS integrations, independent convenience stores now access the same sophisticated delivery infrastructure that national chains use — without the enterprise price tag or technical complexity.
Stop managing a counter full of tablets. Stop apologizing for out-of-stock cancellations. Stop losing delivery revenue to operational headaches.
Contact NRS today at (877) 202-8112 to activate your Grubhub and DoorDash integrations and start capturing the delivery profits your store deserves, or visit our website for more information.

According to CBP, the agency continues its efforts to prevent illicit narcotics trafficking while facilitating lawful trade and travel into the United States.

DOJ Ends Illegal DEI Admissions at Jersey City Prep
JERSEY CITY, NJ - The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the Jersey City Board of Education have reached a voluntary settlement to end race- and national origin-based discrimination in admissions at Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School, a competitive college preparatory magnet school in New Jersey.
The agreement resolves a federal investigation under Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in public schools.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said the department is committed to ensuring equal access to educational opportunities. “Quota systems that define students by their race or national origin have been illegal since the 1970s,” Dhillon said. “Federal law requires that all students, regardless of their race or

national origin, be allowed to compete for admission to the best schools in their district.”
According to the Justice Department, its investigation found that McNair High School used a quota-based admissions system that reserved seats across four racial categories: Black, White, Hispanic and Other. Applicants were grouped according to their selfidentified race or national origin, and an equal number of students from each category received admission offers before the remaining seats were filled without considering race.
Under the settlement, the Jersey City Board of Education will eliminate the practice of reserving seats or granting preferences based on race or national origin. The district must adopt a new admissions policy before the 2027-2028 admissions cycle that complies with federal civil rights law and ensures applicants are evaluated without racial or national origin preferences.
The agreement also requires the district to train staff involved in admissions on nondiscriminatory practices and submit periodic status reports to the Justice Department detailing implementation of the revised admissions process. The settlement will remain in effect through Aug. 15, 2029, unless both parties agree to modify or end it earlier.

US Launches Major H-1B Visa Fraud Crackdown
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC - The Trump administration has intensified its scrutiny of the H-1B visa program, launching a new crackdown on what it says is widespread fraud and abuse by foreign entities that allegedly misuse the system to replace or underpay American workers.
Vice President JD Vance announced Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Labor has opened dozens of investigations and issued multiple subpoenas as part of a broader effort to combat fraud involving employment-based visa programs.
Speaking at an anti-fraud event in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Vance said the administration is expanding its enforcement campaign beyond government spending programs to include the H-1B visa system.
He said the goal is to ensure the program is used as intended—to address legitimate shortages of highly skilled workers—and not exploited in ways that disadvantage American employees.
According to Vance, the H-1B program was designed to allow U.S. employers to hire highly skilled professionals, including scientists, physicians, engineers, and technology experts, when qualified domestic talent is unavailable. However, he alleged that some corporations and foreign entities have

The H-1B visa program enables U.S. employers to temporarily hire foreign professionals in specialty occupations requiring specialized knowledge, including fields such as information technology, engineering, healthcare, finance, and scientific research.
The program has long been a key source of skilled talent for U.S. technology companies.
India remains by far the largest source of H-1B workers. In recent years, Indian nationals have received the overwhelming majority of H-1B visa approvals, with both Indian IT services firms and major U.S. technology companies ranking among the program's largest users.

BERWYN, IL - A suburban Chicago smoke shop with "420" in its name is facing criminal charges after authorities alleged it was illegally selling marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms without the licenses required under Illinois law.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office said an investigation found that 420 Smoke Shop, located
officers, assisted by the Berwyn Police Department, executed a search warrant at the business on June 25.
During the raid, investigators recovered approximately 36 kilograms of cannabis products, including marijuana and cannabis-infused items, according to the sheriff's office. Authorities said the quantity of products seized indicated a significant illegal retail operation.

According to investigators, the case began after detectives conducted multiple undercover purchases at the business. Those purchases allegedly confirmed that the store was selling cannabis products illegally. Authorities also determined that the shop was selling psilocybin mushrooms, a hallucinogenic controlled substance that remains illegal under Illinois law.
Based on the investigation, Cook County Sheriff's
Following the search, Wasif Mohammad, 24, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with manufacture and delivery of cannabis and manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.
Four days later, on June 29, the shop's owner, Samara Alawaisi, 35, of Homer Glen, surrendered to investigators. He was charged with the same offenses: manufacture and delivery of cannabis and manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance. Court records show that after their initial court appearances, both Mohammad and Alawaisi were ordered released from custody while the criminal case proceeds.
Illinois legalized recreational cannabis for licensed businesses in 2020, but state law requires retailers to obtain licenses before selling cannabis or cannabisinfused products. Psilocybin mushrooms remain illegal in Illinois and are classified as a controlled substance. The Cook County Sheriff's Office said the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not announced whether additional arrests or charges are expected. The defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

CHICAGO, IL – A 34-year-old truck driver has been ordered held in custody after prosecutors alleged he was using his cellphone when he struck and killed a man changing a flat tire on Interstate 80 in Illinois last month.
Kuljeet Kang is charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. During a court hearing, Judge Rivanda Doss Beal denied his release, saying there was no practical way to ensure he would not use electronic devices while driving, given that he works as a truck driver.
The fatal crash occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. on June 24 on Interstate 80 near Torrence Avenue. Authorities said 23-year-old Sebastian Stone had pulled his Honda onto the right shoulder after getting a flat tire and was changing it when he was struck by a passing semitruck.

The investigation quickly led authorities to the suspected vehicle after a witness provided the name of the trucking company, along with the truck and trailer numbers. By about 9 a.m. that morning, Illinois State Police confirmed through license plate reader data that the truck had been in the area at the time of the crash.
Prosecutors said the owner of the trucking company contacted Kang after learning about the incident and asked whether he had been involved in a crash. Kang allegedly disconnected the call without answering.
Police later located Kang that afternoon and seized his cellphone. Investigators also obtained dash camera footage and company records as part of the investigation. Prosecutors allege the evidence indicates Kang was using his phone at the time of the fatal collision. Kang remains in custody as the case moves forward.
