TRUMP'S ‘BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL’:
What Every Indian-American Family Should Know
Trump Switches to New Air Force One
WASHINGTON/ANKARA: President
Donald Trump unexpectedly left Turkey on Wednesday aboard an older Air Force
One rather than the newly renovated Qatari-donated jet that brought him there, but later boarded the new plane in Britain for the flight to Washington.
The trip to Turkey for the NATO summit, the first international travel for the new plane, took place as hostilities escalated with Iran, a country that borders Turkey. The unexpected plane switch followed months of scrutiny over the luxury gift intended to serve as a temporary replacement while Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab struggled to deliver long-delayed next-generation Air Force
One planes. Critics questioned the cost, security and pace of the retrofit.
Trump said on Truth Social that he would use an older baby blue Air Force
One plane "for old time's sake" to fly from Ankara to RAF Mildenhall in Britain while the new plane stopped at the same base so U.S. service members stationed there could tour the aircraft.
WASHINGTON D.C. : President
Trump has signed what he calls the "Big Beautiful Bill," one of the most significant pieces of legislation of his second term. The sweeping measure combines tax cuts, increased immigration and border security funding, defense spending and changes to several federal programs, making it one of the most consequential laws passed in recent years.
For nearly five million IndianAmericans living in the United States, the new law brings both opportunities and concerns. While legal immigrants are unlikely to see immediate changes to their immigration status, the legislation is expected to influence taxes, employment, healthcare and immigration enforcement in the years ahead.
One of the biggest highlights is the extension of several tax provisions first introduced in 2017. Many working families and business owners could continue benefiting from lower federal tax rates. Indian-American entrepreneurs operating hotels, restaurants, convenience stores, gas stations, trucking companies and IT firms will be closely watching how the law affects business growth and future
investments.
The legislation also provides billions of dollars to strengthen border security and immigration enforcement. Funding will support additional immigration officers, detention facilities, deportation operations and more immigration judges to reduce the backlog of pending cases. Legal experts say these measures are primarily aimed at people living in the country unlawfully or those who have violated immigration laws. Individuals with valid visas, Green Cards or U.S. citizenship are generally not expected to be directly affected.
For H-1B professionals, the legislation does not eliminate the visa program. However, immigration attorneys expect stricter scrutiny of documentation and employer compliance. Visa holders are advised to keep all employment and immigration records up to date.
International students on F-1 visas are also unlikely to face immediate changes, but universities continue to stress the importance of maintaining valid visa status and complying with work authorization rules, including Optional Practical Training (OPT). Healthcare is another area likely to see changes. The law reduces spending on
FBI Targets Goldy Brar with $50K Reward
WASHINGTON: The FBI has announced a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest of Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy Brar, an alleged leader of the Lawrence Bishnoi organised crime network in North America. Brar is wanted by U.S. authorities on charges including racketeering conspiracy, extortion and drug trafficking. Investigators say the criminal network has been linked to violent crimes across the United States and Canada.
The announcement follows federal

indictments accusing Goldy Brar and Lawrence Bishnoi of orchestrating the 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. U.S. prosecutors allege the murder was part of a wider international criminal conspiracy involving organised crime networks operating across several countries.
According to the FBI, Brar has connections in California, Canada, India and Mexico and is believed to have played a key role in directing criminal activities from North America. The agency has appealed to the public for information that could lead to his arrest, assuring that all credible tips will be treated confidentially.
The charges against Brar are part of "Operation Hard Ball," a major U.S. crackdown targeting transnational organised crime groups involved in extortion, narcotics trafficking, money laundering and violent offences. Federal authorities emphasized that the indictments are allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
certain federal assistance programs, although the impact will vary depending on individual circumstances and state-level implementation. Supporters say the legislation will encourage economic growth, investment and job creation by extending tax cuts and reducing regulations. Critics argue it could increase the federal deficit while reducing funding for some social programs and creating anxiety within immigrant communities.
Immigration experts advise IndianAmericans to stay informed rather than alarmed. Those with pending immigration applications should monitor their case status, attend every scheduled hearing and consult qualified immigration attorneys before making important decisions. Employers should also ensure full compliance with visa and employment verification requirements. Although debate over the "Big Beautiful Bill" is expected to continue, its real impact will become clearer as federal agencies begin implementing its provisions. For most legal immigrants, daily life is expected to remain unchanged, but staying informed about future policy developments will be essential.
Trump's $5M
Damages Released
A judge has ordered that writer E Jean Carroll be paid the more than $5m (£3.7m) US President Donald Trump owes her after he was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming her in a civil case three years ago. Judge Lewis Kaplan on Wednesday ordered a clerk to release the moneywith interest - from an account where Trump deposited it after the ruling. Trump was pushing to delay the $5.8m payment to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision not to hear an appeal of the case.
In May 2023, a New York jury awarded Carroll the damages over her claim that Trump sexually assaulted her in the 1990s, and then branded the incident a hoax on social media. Trump denied the allegations. "President Trump will keep winning against Liberal Lawfare, as he continues to focus on his mission to Make America Great Again," the spokesman said.

Trump Warns Iran: 'Strikes Will Be 20 Times Harder'
US launches fresh strikes as Trump says Tehran is 'begging for a deal'; Iran vows retaliation, raising fears of a wider Gulf conflict
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Iran, warning that any attack on U.S. interests or shipping in the Strait of Hormuz would be met with military strikes "20 times harder." The warning came as American forces carried out a second consecutive day of airstrikes on Iranian military targets, including an airbase in Iranshahr. Iranian state media reported explosions in Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, Chabahar and several other locations along the country's southern coast. Trump claimed Iran had reached out seeking negotiations but questioned whether Tehran could be trusted to honor any agreement. "They want a
US Launches Major H-1B Fraud Probe, Cognizant Named
WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has intensified its crackdown on alleged H-1B visa fraud, with a senior administration official identifying IT services giant Cognizant while discussing ongoing investigations into the employmentbased visa program. The probe is aimed at detecting misuse of H-1B visas, including fraudulent applications, fake job placements and violations of
labor rules designed to protect both American and foreign workers.
Officials stressed that the investigation targets suspected abuses of the system and should not be viewed as an action against legitimate H-1B professionals or law-abiding employers. Cognizant, one of the largest employers of Indian technology professionals in the United States, said it complies with all applicable immigration laws and is cooperating with authorities.
The development has drawn close attention from the Indian-American community, as thousands of skilled professionals work in the U.S. on H-1B visas. Immigration experts have advised visa holders to maintain accurate documentation and continue following all legal and employment requirements while the investigation proceeds.

Iran condemned the attacks and vowed retaliation. Senior Iranian leaders warned that any new U.S. strike would be answered with force, as Iranian missiles and drones targeted military sites in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Gulf nations activated air defenses, though no major damage was immediately reported.
The latest escalation has reignited fears of a broader regional war and pushed global oil prices sharply higher, with investors worried that instability around the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt the world's energy supplies.
Khamenei's Final Journey Today
Thousands of mourners are expected to attend the funeral, while security has been tightened across the country. The burial comes at a sensitive time as Iran continues to condemn the U.S. actions, raising fears of further instability in the Middle East.
Indian Man Kills Wife In US, Sends Pic To Girlfriend. Then A 'Smoothie' Clue
WASHINGTON: A 30-year-old Indian software engineer has been arrested in the United States for allegedly murdering his wife, nearly nine months after her mysterious death shocked the Indian community. Police say Avinash Narne strangled his 27-year-old wife, Raajitha Sabbineni, inside their Bellevue apartment in October 2025 before trying to make it appear as though she had died in the bathroom.
Investigators allege Narne had been involved in a secret relationship with a woman in India for several years and even sent her a photograph after the crime. A seemingly ordinary smoothie purchased after the incident, along with phone records showing multiple calls to his girlfriend on

they describe as a carefully planned attempt to conceal the killing. According to investigators, Narne initially told police that his wife had locked herself in the bathroom and was not responding. However, forensic evidence and digital records reportedly contradicted his version of events. Detectives spent months examining surveillance footage, financial transactions, mobile phone data and witness statements before obtaining enough evidence to charge him with first-degree murder. The case has drawn widespread attention in both the United States and India, leaving the victim's family devastated and raising fresh concerns about domestic violence within immigrant families. If convicted, Narne could face life imprisonment under U.S. law.

US-Iran Deal Threatened as Tehran Fires
Iran’s military fired at least two missiles at commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night, according to two US officials cited by Axios. The reported attack came after a oneweek agreement between the US and Iran on halting strikes in the strait had expired, putting a fragile memorandum of understanding at risk of collapse. India, Indonesia Seal BrahMos Deal
India and Indonesia signed a series of landmark agreements Tuesday covering the supply of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra air-to-air missile systems, as well as major defence technology transfers, critical mineral extraction, maritime security, and digital telecom connectivity. The developments came during a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta.
Modi, who reached Jakarta as part of a three-nation trip from July 6 to 11, said, “The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership we forged in 2018 is taking a new flight today. We are taking important steps forward in
every sector—development, security, technology, culture, and education… I am confident that a golden chapter of India-Indonesia partnership begins today.”
This is PM Modi’s fourth visit to Indonesia and the first bilateral visit since the elevation of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2018.
Government Likely to Delay 25% Ethanol Blend
AMID A raging backlash over a rapid increase in the use of ethanol in petrol from 10% to 20% in just three years, the government is likely to push back the proposed shift to a higher blend of ethanol fuel E25 comprising 75% petrol and 25% ethanol.
The government had originally planned to dispense petrol blended with 20% ethanol only by 2030. But the E20 fuel
— 80% petrol and 20% ethanol — is now the standard petrol variant available nationwide. While no formal date has been announced for dispensing E25 blended petrol, two government decisions over the last six weeks triggered fresh concerns: one, central excise duty exemption for blended fuel (22%30% ethanol) and two, fuel standards notified by BIS for these blends.
During his visit to Jakarta, PM Narendra Modi was awarded the Bintang Adipurna medal, Indonesia's highest honour, by President Prabowo Subianto.

Zolqadr said Iran was not familiar with the “language of threats” and warned that Tehran would respond if the US continued with such rhetoric, Reuters reported. “Iranians are unfamiliar with the language of threats. So speak to the Iranian people with respect, otherwise we will respond in another language,” Zolqadr was quoted by Republic News Agency.
Bloody Fourth of July: 52 Shot, Five Killed in Weekend Gun Violence Across US
The United States' Fourth of July celebrations turned tragic as a series of shootings across at least nine states left 52 people injured and five dead over the holiday weekend. Incidents were reported in New York, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Arizona and South Carolina, highlighting America's continuing struggle with gun violence. One of the worst attacks occurred at New York's Coney Island, where gunfire erupted during Independence Day fireworks celebrations, injuring
eight people, including four children and a woman. Several victims remained in critical condition. Similar shootings took place at beaches, apartment complexes, entertainment districts and neighborhood block parties.
In Chicago, Pensacola (Florida), San Antonio (Texas), Memphis (Tennessee) and other cities, multiple people were wounded in separate incidents, while police continued searching for suspects in several cases.
Criminologist James Alan Fox says the Fourth of July and the following day historically record the highest number of shootings in the US, largely due to large crowds, alcohol consumption and easy access to firearms. The latest wave of violence has once again intensified debate over America's gun culture and calls for stricter firearm regulations.

The video sparked widespread online debate over healthcare costs. Many users praised India's affordable generic medicines, while others criticised the high prices of prescription drugs in the US. The comparison has once again highlighted the vast gap in medicine pricing between the two countries and renewed discussion on access to affordable healthcare.

Modi to Visit New Zealand Next Week
SYDNEY: - New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Friday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make his first official visit to New Zealand next week.
The two nations signed a free trade agreement in April that will eliminate 95% of tariffs on goods from New Zealand. "Prime Minister Modi's visit is historic, with this being the first to New Zealand by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years," Luxon said in a statement.
For India, the revived corridor carries significant geopolitical implications. Coming after China's deepening ties with Pakistan and growing engagement with Bangladesh and Myanmar, the project could further strengthen Beijing's presence around India's eastern flank.
The proposed route also passes through Myanmar, where an ongoing civil war and instability pose major challenges to the corridor's implementation.
Security experts believe New Delhi will closely monitor the project's progress, as it has the potential to alter regional trade dynamics and expand China's strategic footprint in India's neighbourhood.

dance nahin aata tha. Then, I joined Pandit Veeru Krishnan and learned dancing for 6 months.
I am sure no one got a hint that you didn’t know how to dance… That’s because main mehnat kaafi karti hoon! If I am determined about something, I’ll work very hard and perhaps give an impression to people that I know how to do it. However, the truth is that at that time, I did not know how to dance. I had two left feet. What made you try your hand at singing?
I wanted to reconnect with my artistic side after marriage. After getting married, I tried helping my husband, Sangram Singh, with his business ventures. However, I soon realized that this kind of work was draining me. Since I had worked as an actor, I wanted to return to a creative space without taking up something that didn’t genuinely interest me. Singing, therefore, seemed like a very good alternative.
I am very happy in this space. Singing allows me to explore the same artistic nuances, and it brings me a lot of joy. I am learning and enjoying the process.

Netanyahu Rebuts Vance's 'Only Ally' Remark
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described India as one of Israel's strongest supporters, rejecting U.S. Vice President JD Vance's recent claim that Israel has no powerful ally besides the United States.
In an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu said Israel enjoys "tremendous support" from India's 1.4 billion people and praised the strong relationship between the two countries. While calling U.S. President Donald Trump Israel's "greatest friend" in the White House, Netanyahu said he respects Vance but does not agree with all of his comments.
Vance had recently warned Israel not to "attack the only powerful ally" it has, referring to the United States.
Telegram channels where illegal content was allegedly sold for as little as Rs. 99. The report also raised concerns over Instagram's moderation system, noting that one flagged advertisement reportedly remained online for more than 24 hours after being reported and was initially deemed not to have violated the platform's community guidelines. Following the investigation, the Centre summoned Meta representatives to discuss the issue.
Meta said it has a zero-tolerance policy toward child sexual abuse material and uses artificial intelligence, expert teams and advanced detection systems to identify and remove such content. The company added that it had already removed several advertisements and suspended the accounts involved.

Washington's National Mall after a two-hour storm delay.
He praised U.S. achievements, renewed calls for stricter voting laws, warned against the spread of communism, and highlighted his administration's policies, including actions against Iran.
The 40-minute address ended with fireworks and Freedom 250 celebrations. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found many Americans believe the anniversary events have become too political.
WASHINGTON: The Trump administration is preparing to strengthen workplace immigration enforcement as part of its broader effort to increase deportations, according to a CNN report citing multiple sources familiar with the discussions.
The report says the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Justice Department and other federal agencies are developing a coordinated strategy to expand worksite investigations and target businesses that knowingly employ undocumented workers.
Officials reportedly believe tougher
workplace enforcement is necessary to meet the administration's deportation goals. Criminal investigations are already underway, and employers are receiving additional guidance on hiring compliance and employment verification. The White
House has denied that the effort represents a new policy, saying federal agencies have long investigated crimes such as welfare fraud, identity theft and employmentrelated violations.
The report also says delays and changes in work permit renewals for some undocumented immigrants could make it easier for authorities to identify individuals whose authorization to work has expired. While large-scale raids have traditionally focused on factories, processing plants and other workplaces with large immigrant workforces, experts say businesses relying on undocumented labor could face increased scrutiny if enforcement expands.

FDA Approves First Gene Therapy for Young Children with Sickle Cell Disease
WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded the approval of Casgevy (exagamglogene autotemcel), allowing its use in children aged 2 years and older with sickle cell disease (SCD) experiencing recurrent vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) or transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia (TDT). The decision makes Casgevy the first gene therapy approved for children as young as two with sickle cell disease. Previously, the treatment was approved only for patients aged 12 years and older.
Casgevy is a one-time, personalized gene therapy that uses a patient's own blood stem cells. The cells are edited using CRISPR/Cas9 genomeediting technology and returned to the patient's body after high-intensity conditioning treatment. In sickle cell disease, the therapy boosts fetal hemoglobin production, preventing red blood cells from sickling and significantly reducing painful vaso-occlusive crises. For patients with transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia, it increases hemoglobin levels, helping eliminate the need for regular blood transfusions.
National Priority Voucher pilot program, which accelerates access to therapies addressing critical medical needs.
The expanded approval is supported by clinical trial data. Among children aged 5 to under 12 years with sickle cell disease, all eight patients evaluable for efficacy experienced no severe vaso-occlusive crises for at least 12 consecutive months after treatment. In a separate study involving children with beta thalassemia, eight of nine evaluable patients achieved transfusion independence for at least one year. Common side effects included inflammation of the mouth lining (mucositis), fever associated with low white blood cell counts (febrile neutropenia), and decreased appetite. The prescribing information also warns of potential risks, including delayed blood cell recovery, hypersensitivity reactions, and unintended genome edits. Casgevy, developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, also holds Orphan Drug, Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT), and Fast Track designations from the FDA.
The agency also noted that the approval was reviewed under the Commissioner's

Indian National Admits Role in Fake Robbery Scheme to Obtain U Visa
BOSTON, MA – A 40-year-old Indian national living unlawfully in Massachusetts has pleaded guilty to participating in a visa fraud scheme that staged fake armed robberies to help individuals falsely qualify for U.S. immigration benefits.
Mitul Patel of Worcester pleaded guilty in federal court on June 24 to one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 29.
According to federal prosecutors, Patel paid the organizer of the scheme to pose as the victim of a staged armed robbery at a Worcester convenience store in October 2023.
Authorities said the conspiracy began in 2023 and involved orchestrated armed robberies at convenience stores, liquor stores and fast-food restaurants in Massachusetts and other states.
Investigators said a participant posing as an armed robber would enter a business, threaten employees with what appeared to be a firearm, take cash from the register and flee. Employees would then deliberately delay calling police to make the incidents appear genuine.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker Signs New Laws on Rental Fees, Driver Safety, Consumer Rights
CHICAGO, IL - Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has signed more than 60 bills into law since Friday, introducing new protections for renters, consumers, drivers and public media, while expanding educational access and strengthening environmental safeguards.
One of the key measures, House Bill 3564, targets hidden rental charges by banning several so-called "junk fees" imposed by landlords. Effective Jan. 1, the law prohibits fees for lease renewals or modifications, eviction notices, routine maintenance and after-hours maintenance requests. It also caps rental application and background check fees at $50, unless a third-party screening costs more, in which case landlords must provide receipts. All mandatory fees must be listed on the first page of a lease, and tenants cannot be charged for undisclosed fees.
Another law, House Bill 4472, establishes a statewide Blue Envelope Program beginning Jan. 1. The voluntary program allows drivers with autism spectrum disorder

to present a blue envelope during traffic stops, helping officers recognize potential communication challenges and providing guidance for both parties.
To improve consumer access to savings, House Bill 45 requires retailers to offer alternatives to digital coupons so customers without smartphones or internet access can receive the same discounts.
Public utility customers will gain a stronger voice under House Bill 4514, which allows them to request public forums on proposed rate hikes before the Illinois Commerce Commission and submit written comments for the official record.
Other new laws include protections for editorial independence at public college and university media outlets, mandatory ingredient labeling on disposable and reusable diapers by 2028, and an alternative to license suspension for certain speeding offenders through vehicle speed-control devices starting in 2028. Environmental protections were also strengthened through House Bill 5070, which prevents Illinois from adopting federal environmental regulations that are weaker than existing state standards.
In higher education, House Bill 5093 expands eligibility for in-state tuition to students who attended Illinois high schools for at least three years, even if they later established residency outside the state. Eligible noncitizens must also begin the process of becoming permanent U.S. residents.
Federal prosecutors said the fabricated police reports and other evidence were later used to support fraudulent applications for U Visas, a form of immigration relief available to certain victims of serious crimes who assist law enforcement in investigations or prosecutions.
According to the government, participants paid the scheme's organizer, Rambhai Patel, to arrange the staged robberies, while some business owners were also compensated for allowing their establishments to be used in the scheme.
The organizer, the individual who acted as the robber and the getaway driver were all convicted in May 2025.
Mitul Patel faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison, up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. Prosecutors said he is also subject to deportation after completing any prison sentence imposed by the court.
The investigation was led by the FBI, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and several other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
Supreme Court Rejects Trump Bid to Restrict Birthright Citizenship
WASHINGTON, DC — In a landmark ruling reaffirming one of the nation's most enduring constitutional principles, the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to limit birthright citizenship, holding that children born on American soil are citizens regardless of their parents' immigration status, with only narrow constitutional exceptions.
In a 6-3 decision, the Court rejected the administration's attempt to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the United States to parents who are either in the country illegally or temporarily, reaffirming the long-standing interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment's Citizenship Clause.
Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, emphasized that the Constitution's guarantee of birthright citizenship remains a cornerstone of American democracy and equality.
"Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights— to freely participate in our political community," Roberts wrote. "The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to 'every free-born person in this land.' We keep that promise today."
Roberts cited historical debates surrounding the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment after the Civil War, noting that its framers intended to ensure citizenship for nearly everyone born within the United States, regardless of ancestry or the immigration status of their parents.

Mississippi to Create Database of Undocumented Immigrants Under New Law
HiIndia Newsdesk
MISSISSIPPI - A new Mississippi law taking effect Wednesday authorizes the state's Department of Public Safety to compile a database of immigrants living in the state without legal authorization, raising concerns among immigration advocates while drawing support from Republican lawmakers who say it will strengthen public safety.
The law directs the agency to use "all reasonable lawful investigative means" to identify undocumented immigrants and collect information including their names, addresses, country of origin, age, criminal history, and the status of any deportation proceedings. The information may be shared with state and local law enforcement agencies, though the measure neither requires nor prohibits sharing it with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Republican Sen. Angela Hill, who sponsored the legislation, said the database will help Mississippi better understand the scope of illegal immigration and support efforts to combat crimes such as human trafficking and drug smuggling.
The measure comes as states across the

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Warns USPS on Mail Ballot Proposal
WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), a senior member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, warned U.S. Postmaster General David Steiner on Thursday that he would pursue a congressional subpoena and lead efforts to remove him from office if the U.S. Postal Service continues advancing a proposal tied to President Donald Trump's March executive order that would restrict the delivery of mail ballots to voters appearing on a federally maintained voter list.
Krishnamoorthi's warning came during a House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee hearing, where witnesses testified that the USPS had published a proposed rule implementing the executive order. They also noted that Steiner reaffirmed before the Senate earlier this week that the Postal Service would not deliver mail ballots in states that decline to provide voter registration data required under the proposal. Earlier Thursday, a federal district court blocked key provisions of the executive order, including efforts to establish a federal voter list and direct how the Postal Service handles mail ballots.
"If you continue to move forward with this proposed rule despite the court ruling this morning, I, as a senior member of the Oversight Committee, will move to subpoena you and lead the effort to remove you from your post,"
Krishnamoorthi's warning came during a House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee hearing, where witnesses testified that the USPS had published a proposed rule implementing the executive order.
Krishnamoorthi said during the hearing. The Illinois congressman also expressed concern that proposed restrictions on mail voting could disproportionately affect military personnel and Americans living overseas, many of whom rely on absentee ballots to participate in elections. He noted that several states, including Texas and Florida, count certain military and overseas ballots received after Election Day, provided they are postmarked on time. "President Trump's demand to throw out ballots arriving after Election Day would break the law and disenfranchise
military voters," Krishnamoorthi said. "That's a severe disservice to our men and women in uniform, among others." Krishnamoorthi further raised concerns about what he described as growing federal involvement in election administration. He cited recent comments by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin suggesting that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents could be deployed to polling places in response to alleged security threats.
Referring to federal laws governing election administration, Krishnamoorthi cautioned against using security concerns as a justification for deploying armed federal personnel at polling locations, warning that such actions could undermine voter confidence and interfere with the electoral process.
maintain and update the database for the next two years, a task some legal experts say could prove difficult because immigration status often changes as individuals obtain visas, apply for legal protections, or relocate.
Efrén Olivares of the National Immigration Law Center called the proposal "practically unworkable" and warned that maintaining a government list of undocumented immigrants raises serious civil liberties concerns. Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies, which supports stricter immigration enforcement, said the law could help ensure undocumented immigrants come to the attention of federal authorities.
According to the American Immigration Council, Mississippi has fewer than 28,000 undocumented immigrants, representing less than 1% of the state's population.
Civil rights advocates also warn the law could erode trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi said residents may become less willing to report crimes or cooperate with police if they fear immigration enforcement, potentially making communities less safe.
Firework Strikes Delta Plane During Landing at Chicago Midway Airport
CHICAGO, IL -- A Delta Air Lines flight was reportedly struck by a firework while descending into Chicago Midway International Airport on the Fourth of July, according to air traffic control (ATC) audio and the airline.
The crew of Delta Flight 1076, an Airbus A319 traveling from Atlanta to Chicago, alerted the control tower after hearing a "loud bang" while approaching the runway at an altitude of about 200 to 250 feet.
Before landing, the controller warned the pilots to use caution, saying there were "multiple homes near the approach shooting off fireworks."
Despite the reported impact, the aircraft landed safely, taxied to the gate without incident, and no emergency landing was required. No passengers or crew members were injured.
According to ATC audio, the controller later informed the pilots that there had been several reports of fireworks being launched near the runway approach path and that local authorities had been notified. Delta said the aircraft was removed from service for a thorough inspection as a precaution.

Indian Origin Artist Reimagines the Ramayana in California Exhibition
HiIndia Newsdesk
RICHMOND, CA - Bay Area artist Pragati Sharma Mohanty has opened a new exhibition at the Richmond Art Center in California that reimagines the Ramayana through contemporary visual art.
Titled "Daughter of the Earth," the exhibition marks the culmination of a six-year artistic journey rooted in research, storytelling and experimentation.
Featuring more than 75 paintings, sculptural installations, divine totems, mixed-media works and a 100-foot handwritten Sanskrit manuscript, the exhibition draws from multiple versions of the Ramayana and India's rich visual storytelling traditions. Rather than illustrating the ancient epic, the exhibition explores its characters, landscapes, relationships and moral questions through immersive compositions
layered with mythology, architecture, symbolism, flora, fauna and hidden narratives.
According to Mohanty, the exhibition reflects a shift away from screen-based storytelling toward immersive visual narratives inspired by India's artistic heritage.
"At a time when stories are increasingly consumed through screens, I turn to one of humanity's oldest traditions — visual and oral storytelling," Mohanty said in a statement. "My work explores how ancient narratives survive, transform and find new meaning when they are retold through contemporary artistic languages."
At the heart of the exhibition is Mohanty's signature style, "Maximalist-Miniaturism," which combines the precision and narrative traditions of Indian miniature painting with the visual richness of maximalism. Each work is designed to be appreciated as a complete composition from a distance while revealing intricate stories and symbolic details upon closer viewing.
"Through my signature style, Maximalist-Miniaturism, I create densely layered compositions where every detail contributes to a larger story," Mohanty said. "Influenced by Indian miniature traditions, folk art, manuscripts, architecture and decorative practices, my paintings invite viewers into worlds that unfold slowly."
Mohanty said the Ramayana has traveled across centuries and cultures, evolving through different languages, regions and artistic traditions.
"My work is a continuation of that living tradition — not a recreation of the past, but a conversation between history and the present," she said.
Born in India, Mohanty studied architecture at the Government College of Architecture in Lucknow and industrial design at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. Her architectural training continues to influence her approach to structure, space and composition, while her artistic practice combines painting, mixed media, digital planning and handcrafted techniques.

New Illinois Driving Test Rules for Seniors Take Effect July 1
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A major change to Illinois' driver's license renewal rules for older adults took effect statewide on July 1, eliminating the mandatory behind-the-wheel driving test for most senior drivers. The new law, House Bill 1226, also known as the Road Safety & Fairness Act, changes how residents age 75 and older renew their licenses. Beginning July 1, most drivers ages 79 to 86 no longer need a road test to renew their licenses. They must still renew in person and pass a vision screening. Only drivers 87 and older are now required to complete a behind-the-wheel driving test and renew their licenses annually.
The law does not affect commercial drivers. Those with Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) must continue taking an annual driving test beginning at age 75.
The updated renewal schedule is:
Ages 79–80: Every four years
Ages 81–86: Every two years
Age 87+: Every year
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said the law is based on data showing older Illinois drivers have strong safety records. Supporters, including AARP and senior advocacy groups, said the measure modernizes the licensing process while maintaining appropriate safety standards.
House Bill 1226 passed the Illinois General Assembly unanimously in 2025 and officially took effect on July 1, 2026.

Silicon Valley Conference Focuses on Science and Sanskrit Scriptures
FREMONT, CA. — International scholar Yash Gupta explored the relationship between Sanskrit scriptures and modern scientific thought during a community gathering on June 29 in
Hosted by Americans4Hindus and Britons4Hindus at the Fremont home of Romesh Japra and his wife, Sunita Japra, the event featured Gupta's keynote address, "Science in Sanskrit Scriptures." Gupta, president of Britons4Hindus, cited verses from the Bhagavad Gita and discussed concepts from Hindu philosophy that he said parallel contemporary ideas in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and consciousness. A central focus of his presentation was the Sanskrit invocation "Om Purnamadah Purnamidam," which he described as expressing the concepts of wholeness and infinity. Gupta said the philosophical principles reflected in the verse have contributed to discussions surrounding mathematical abstraction
and the development of the concept of zero.
He also highlighted the launch of Britons4Hindus, saying the organization aims to promote civic participation, leadership development, and community engagement among Hindus in the United Kingdom while encouraging the values of Sanatana Dharma.
Romesh Japra, founder and chairman of Americans4Hindus and Britons4Hindus, outlined the organizations' vision of strengthening collaboration among Hindu communities through education, leadership, and public service. He said Americans4Hindus has expanded its presence to 38 U.S. states through its network of state political action committees and community initiatives. The gathering also recognized several candidates seeking public office in California, including candidates for city council seats in Fremont, Cupertino, and Milpitas, as well as school board positions in Sunnyvale.
According to the organizers, the event was designed to encourage dialogue on civic engagement, cultural preservation, and leadership while strengthening ties among Hindu communities in the United States and the United Kingdom. Participants described Gupta's keynote as an opportunity to examine the intersection of ancient Hindu philosophy and modern scientific inquiry, fostering discussion on the relevance of traditional Sanskrit knowledge in contemporary scientific discourse.

Fed Study Links Illegal Immigration to Higher Housing Costs
WASHINGTON, DC - A new working paper from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas suggests that the sharp increase in illegal immigration during the Biden administration contributed to higher home prices and rents in many U.S. metropolitan areas.
The study, which analyzed immigration court records and government administrative data, examined the economic effects of unauthorized immigration between 2021 and 2024. Researchers found that while the influx of unauthorized immigrant workers expanded local employment with little measurable impact on wages, it also increased demand for housing, pushing up prices in areas where supply remained limited.
According to the report, a 1% increase in unauthorized immigrant workers relative to a local workforce was associated with a 2.2% rise in home prices and a 1.4% increase in rents. The researchers found little evidence that new housing construction expanded quickly enough to meet the additional demand, resulting in greater affordability challenges.
The economists estimated that

unauthorized immigrant worker inflows accounted for approximately 30% of employment growth in the average metropolitan area between March 2021 and March 2024. They also estimated those inflows explained about 30% of home-price growth and roughly 20% of rent growth during the same period. However, the report emphasized that immigration was not the sole factor behind rising housing costs, noting that housing supply constraints also played a significant role.
The paper described the 2021–2024 period as an "unprecedented boom" in illegal immigration, citing Congressional Budget Office estimates that net unauthorized immigration added about 7 million people to the U.S. population before slowing significantly in mid-2024.
Researchers also found that areas experiencing larger increases in unauthorized immigrant workers saw declines in government transfer payments, a trend they suggested may reflect higher employment and lower reliance on public assistance among working-age immigrants. The authors cautioned that the paper is a preliminary working draft and that its findings do not necessarily represent the views of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas or the Federal Reserve System.
