Lawmakers Accuse Bondi of Hiding Epstein Names
Four States Sue Trump Over Public Health Funding Cuts
Four Democratic-led states — California, Colorado, Illinois and Minnesota — have filed a lawsuit seeking to block the Trump administration’s decision to terminate $600 million in public health funding. The complaint, filed in federal court in Chicago, alleges the cuts are politically motivated and unlawfully target states over policy disagreements, including immigration enforcement.
The funding, administered through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), supports critical public health programs such as disease monitoring, outbreak response, emergency preparedness and HIV prevention.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has said the grants are being ended because they no longer align with the agency’s priorities.
The lawsuit comes amid broader tensions over federal funding, as President Donald Trump has previously threatened to withhold funds from Democratic-led states and “sanctuary” jurisdictions. California Attorney General Rob Bonta accused the administration of using federal funds to pressure states to adopt its political agenda.
$600 million CDC grants for disease response and HIV prevention at stake
ARepublican lawmaker has accused U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi of concealing the names of powerful associates of the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a tense House Judiciary Committee hearing on February 11.
Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky alleged the Justice Department committed a “massive failure” in complying with a law requiring the release of Epstein-related investigative files. He questioned why the name of billionaire Leslie Wexner was redacted in an FBI document listing potential co-conspirators in the sex trafficking probe. Bondi responded that Wexner’s name appeared in other released documents and said the redaction was removed “within 40 minutes” after it was flagged. “Forty minutes of me catching you red-handed,” Massie replied.
Lawmakers from both parties criticized what they described as excessive redactions and withheld material, arguing they went beyond exemptions permitted under a transparency law passed by Congress in November. The Justice Department recently released what it called a final tranche of more than three million pages of documents, renewing scrutiny of Epstein’s ties to wealthy and influential figures.
Bondi said more than 500 department lawyers reviewed the materials under a tight timeline and insisted that any disclosure of victims’ identities was inadvertent. She defended her record, stating she had “spent my entire career fighting for victims.”
The controversy has followed Bondi throughout her tenure, amid broader political tensions and renewed attention to Epstein’s connections before his 2019 death in custody while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
Waldorf Astoria's Chinese owners plan to sell iconic NYC hotel,
WSJ reports
The Park Avenue landmark, reopened in November after an 8-year renovation from a 1,400-room hotel to 375 hotel guest rooms and 372 residences. The transformation was five years behind schedule and more than $1 billion over the initial budget.
The hotel was the setting for the film "Weekend at the Waldorf", starring Ginger Rogers, and its $1,000-a-week Suite 2728 was home to Marilyn Monroe in 1955 after she left Hollywood. Waldorf's adjoining restaurants, shops and other amenities would be included in a sale, but the condos would continue to be sold separately, the report added, citing people with knowledge of the plans. Hilton Worldwide (HLT.N), opens new tab, which has a 100-year management contract for the hotel, sold the property in 2014 to Anbang Insurance Group, a reinsurance firm based in China, for $1.95 billion, making it one of the most expensive hotel sales ever.
Gates Foundation denies any financial payments to Epstein
The Gates Foundation said on Wednesday it did not make any financial payments to late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein or employ him at any time, after the U.S. Department of Justice released emails that included communications between Epstein and the foundation's staff.
"On the basis of Epstein's claims that he could mobilize significant philanthropic resources for global health and development, a small number of foundation employees interacted with Epstein to try to secure this potential funding," the foundation said in a statement.
"Ultimately, the foundation did not pursue any collaboration with Epstein and no fund was ever created," the foundation said, adding that it "regrets having any employees interact with Epstein in any way". The Gates Foundation, the philanthropic organization started by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his then-wife in 2000, is one of the world's biggest funders of global health initiatives. Bill Gates is chair and board member of the foundation. The DOJ's release of millions of documents related to Epstein has revealed the late sex offender's ties to many prominent people, both before and after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to prostitution charges, including soliciting an underage girl. His 2019 death in a Manhattan jail cell was ruled a suicide.

ICE Detains Mother as Son Dies
A Mexican woman living in the United States without legal status for 22 years was not released from ICE custody even after her 15-yearold son, who was battling advanced cancer, died days after her arrest. Erlit Martinez was detained on January 3 in Salisbury, Maryland, while driving to work. The Department of Homeland Security said she had previously entered the US illegally multiple times and had been deported before reentering in 2004. She had no criminal record.
After her arrest, her son’s health rapidly declined, but she was unaware while being transferred between detention facilities. Despite appeals for humanitarian release to attend the funeral, she was moved to a New Jersey jail. Following public pressure and political intervention, an immigration judge granted her bond. Martinez has since been released and is considering self-deportation.

India Mandates 3-Hour Deadline to Remove Unlawful Online Content
New AI labelling norms introduced; critics warn of overreach and censorship risks
India has amended its Information Technology rules to require social media platforms to remove unlawful content within three hours of notification, sharply reducing the previous 36-hour window. The new guidelines, effective 20 February, apply to major platforms such as Meta, YouTube and X, and extend to AIgenerated content.
For the first time, the rules define AI-generated material, including deepfakes, and mandate clear labelling and permanent traceable
markers. Platforms must also deploy automated tools to detect illegal AI content, including deceptive, nonconsensual, or harmful material. The government has not explained the shortened deadline. However, digital rights groups warn the move could
Donald Trump Praises Trade Deal With India, Calls It "Historic"
Washington DC:
US President Donald Trump said that the United States is the world's leading energy producer, emphasising the nation is becoming a "massive energy exporter."
Trump said at the Champion of Coal Event on Wednesday that recent trade deals with several countries, including Japan, South Korea, and India, have led to a dramatic increase in U.S. coal exports.
Trump claimed that the quality of American coal is "supposed to be the finest anywhere in the world."
Donald Trump claimed that the quality of American coal is "supposed to be the finest anywhere in the world."
He said, "America is now the number one energy producer in the world. We're becoming a massive energy exporter. In just the past few months, we've made historic trade deals with Japan, Korea, India, and others to increase our coal exports dramatically. The quality of our coal is supposed to be the finest anywhere in the world."
The comment came as on February 9, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that "national interest" would continue to guide India's energy-related decisions, underlining that the key drivers of the country's energy policy are "adequate availability, fair pricing and reliability of supply", amid reports suggesting New Delhi is cutting its oil imports from Russia.

This effectively means our energy security is being dictated externally — that energy itself is being weaponised against us,” the leader of the Opposition said.

US Lawmaker Seeks to End H-1B Visa Programme
The proposed legislation comes amid a broader tightening of US immigration policies.
A Republican lawmaker in the United States has moved to abolish the H-1B visa programme, reigniting debate over the role of skilled foreign workers in the American economy. Congressman Greg Steube of Florida has introduced the Ending Exploitative Imported Labour Exemptions (EXILE) Act, which seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act and terminate the H-1B system entirely.
The H-1B visa allows US companies to hire foreign professionals in specialised fields such as technology, engineering, healthcare and finance. Supporters argue the programme helps address talent shortages and keeps American firms globally competitive. However, critics like Steube contend that it has been misused by corporations to replace qualified American workers with lower-cost foreign labour. Steube said the programme prioritises corporate profits over the interests of US workers and young graduates. He argued that protecting domestic employment opportunities is essential to preserving the “American dream” and strengthening the national workforce.
The proposed legislation is likely to spark strong reactions from the tech industry, business groups and immigration advocates, who maintain that high-skilled immigration contributes to innovation, economic growth and job creation in the United States.
Vande Mataram Before Anthem At Govt Events, Schools
The Union Home Ministry has directed that ‘Vande Mataram’ be played before ‘Jana Gana Mana’ at all government events and in schools. People must stand when the national song is played. It will also feature at civilian award ceremonies and events attended by the President, during arrival and departure. In cinema halls, it may be played but standing is optional. All six stanzas, including four dropped by the Congress in 1937, will now be included.
US Revises India Deal Factsheet, Removes Pulses Reference
India is the world's largest producer and consumer of pulses, including lentils, chickpeas, and dry beans.
To preserve the interest of Indian farmers, New Delhi has imposed substantial tariffs on American exports in these categories.
The Trump administration has revised its factsheet on the “historic” India-US trade deal within 24 hours, removing references to tariff cuts on “certain pulses” and softening language around India’s $500 billion purchase plan. The earlier version said India would reduce tariffs on several US farm goods, including pulses, and had “committed” to buying over $500 billion worth of American products, including agricultural items.
The updated document omits pulses and agricultural goods, and replaces “committed” with “intends.” It also removes a claim that India would eliminate digital services taxes, now stating only that both sides will negotiate digital trade rules.

“Worse Than Toilet Paper,” Khawaja Asif Says
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has delivered a blunt critique of Islamabad’s past alignment with the United States, saying the country was “used and discarded” after serving Washington’s strategic interests.

He said Pakistan’s realignment with
Khawaja Asif said the costs of realigning with the US after 1999, particularly following the September 11, 2001, attacks, were devastating. "Pakistan was treated worse than a piece of toilet paper and was used for a purpose and then thrown away," he said.
the US after 1999, especially following the 9/11 attacks, proved devastating. Islamabad joined the US-led war in Afghanistan and turned against the Taliban, but was later left to deal with prolonged violence, extremism and economic strain. Asif admitted that participation in the Afghan wars under generals Zia-ul-Haq and Pervez Musharraf was not for religion but to appease a superpower. He described terrorism in Pakistan as “blowback” from those policies, calling the losses irreversible and deeply damaging.
The revisions came after Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the deal, alleging it hurt farmers and India’s strategic autonomy. The Centre, however, maintains that sensitive sectors remain protected and that Indian farmers’ interests are fully safeguarded.

'US Forcing India To Buy Costly Oil': Russia Slams Trump's 'Energy Ban'
Russia has criticised the Trump administration for allegedly trying to stop India and other nations from buying Russian oil. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Washington of using sanctions, tariffs and direct prohibitions to achieve “economic domination” and force countries to purchase expensive US LNG instead of cheaper Russian energy. Sitting Too Much Is the New Smoking
Doctors warn that long hours of sitting—at work, in cars and in front of screens—are silently damaging our health, even for those who exercise.

• Sitting slows blood circulation
• Raises risk of heart disease
• Causes neck, back and hip pain
M• Stretch every 30 minutes
• Use stairs instead of lifts
For Home & Seniors
• Avoid TV marathons
• Move during ads
• Light stretching helps joints
odern lifestyles have quietly transformed humans into a sitting generation. From office desks and car seats to sofas and mobile screens, people today spend nearly 8–10 hours a day sitting. Health experts now warn that this sedentary habit is emerging as a serious public health concern—so much so that it is often compared to the dangers of smoking.
Medical studies have consistently linked prolonged sitting to an increased risk of heart disease, type-2 diabetes, obesity, poor circulation and chronic back pain. What worries doctors most is that even those who exercise regularly are not fully protected if they remain seated for long, uninterrupted hours. Sitting for extended periods slows metabolism, reduces calorie burning, restricts blood flow and disrupts insulin response, increasing the risk of lifestyle diseases.
The core issue, experts say, is not sitting itself, but sitting without regular breaks. Health professionals recommend standing up or moving for 2–5 minutes every 30–45 minutes. Small actions such as stretching, walking while speaking on the phone, standing during short meetings or using stairs instead of lifts can significantly reduce health risks. Excessive sitting also takes a toll on mental health, contributing to fatigue, anxiety, low energy and poor concentration. Experts suggest focusing on building daily movement habits rather than relying only on intense workouts. In a screen-dominated world, small and frequent movement may be the simplest way to protect long-term health.
Russia moves to block WhatsApp in messaging app crackdown
Russia has attempted to fully block WhatsApp, according to the Metaowned messaging platform, as the Kremlin intensifies efforts to restrict foreign communication apps. WhatsApp said the move appears aimed at pushing its more than 100 million users in Russia toward a statedeveloped messaging service. The development follows tighter curbs on Telegram, which has a user base in Russia comparable to WhatsApp. Russian authorities have accused both platforms of failing to comply with laws requiring local storage of user data. State media previously reported that WhatsApp could be permanently blocked in 2026. Since 2022, when Meta was designated an extremist organisation, Facebook and Instagram have been banned in Russia. India–US Trade Deal: Tariffs Cut to 18%, $500B Target
New Delhi: The United States and India have finalised an interim trade agreement that cuts US tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent. As part of the deal, the US has withdrawn the additional 25 per cent duty it had imposed on Indian imports.
Here are 10 points:
* India will lower or remove tariffs on all US industrial goods and on many US farm and food items like dried distillers' grains, red sorghum for animal feed, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, wine, spirits, and more.
* The US will charge an 18% tariff on Indian goods, covering textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, plastic and rubber, organic chemicals, home decor, artisanal products, and some machinery.
* If the Interim Agreement is fully concluded, the US will end the reciprocal tariff on many Indian products, including generic medicines, gems and diamonds, and aircraft parts.
* Separately, the US will also remove tariffs on certain aircraft and aircraft parts from India.
* Both countries will tackle non-tariff barriers that make trade harder, to smoothen business on both sides. India will also fix long-standing hurdles for US medical devices, so these products can enter the Indian market more easily.
* India will scrap restrictive import licensing rules for US ICT (information and communication technology) goods that delay market access or cap quantities.
* India will also address long-standing non-tariff barriers affecting US food and farm products, improving access for those items.
* India plans to buy $500 billion of US goods over the next five years (energy, aircraft and parts, precious metals, tech products, and coking coal).
* Both sides will also boost trade in tech products like Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for data centres and expand joint tech cooperation.
* India and the US will keep negotiating BTA to open markets further. During those BTA talks, the US will consider India's request to keep lowering tariffs on Indian goods.
India-US Trade Framework Sends Kashmir Signal to Pakistan
The US Trade Representative's Office has released a map of India that clearly shows Jammu and Kashmir as part of India.
New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India. As much as Pakistan debates this simple fact, the most hard-hitting acceptance has come from one of its most trusted allies and the biggest superpower, the United States.
The US Trade Representative's Office has released a map of India that clearly demarcates the Indian territory. In the map, the northern Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is shown as part of India, including the portion illegally occupied by Pakistan, or the Pakistanoccupied Kashmir.

signalled that the American leadership agrees with India's political map, backs the reality, and doesn't support baseless territorial claims. This comes across as a massive embarrassment for Islamabad, a country that has lately tried to cosy up to US President Donald Trump. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz

Arizona to Demolish Infamous GujaratiOwned Motel Linked to Illegal Activities
Arizona authorities will demolish the Royal Inn motel in Phoenix, long accused of being a hub for prostitution and drug trafficking. The motel was owned by Varsha Patel and managed by Nilam Patel, both of whom were arrested after a major raid in September 2024 that led to the property being shut down.
According to a report by Arizona Central, the motel—located near 27th Avenue and Bethany Home Road— will be razed with bulldozers and the
land sold to prevent any revival of illegal operations. Federal court records show
Varsha Patel was convicted for aiding racketeering, though details of her sentence remain unclear.
Investigators said the motel rooms were used for illegal activities between 2017 and 2024, with proceeds allegedly used to manage the property and pay mortgages on another property in Chino Hills, California. Despite hundreds of complaints and repeated police warnings over the years, authorities say the illegal operations continued, prompting the decision for permanent demolition.

Green Card Relief Likely for Indians as Unused Family Visas May Shift to EB
Immigration experts say if these unused visas are diverted to EB categories, priority dates for Indian applicants—especially H-1B holders—could move forward by months or even years.
Indians waiting years for US green cards could see temporary relief as up to 50,000 unused familysponsored green cards in 2025–26 may be reallocated to employmentbased (EB) categories. The shortfall is linked to restrictions imposed by the Trump administration on immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, which could leave a large number of family-category visas unissued. Immigration experts say if these unused visas are diverted to EB categories, priority dates for Indian applicants—especially H-1B holders—could move forward by months or even years. Under US rules, any family-based green cards not used in a year are automatically transferred to employment-based quotas. A similar shift during the Covid-19 period had briefly reduced waiting times. However, experts caution the relief may be temporary and will depend on the final number of unused family visas this year.

India has also committed to significantly increasing purchases of American products, including energy, technology, agricultural goods and coal, with potential imports exceeding $500 billion over time.
The White House added that India will address priority non-tariff barriers, remove digital services taxes, and negotiate strong digital trade rules.
Both countries will also work on rules of origin, supply-chain resilience, technology cooperation and investment screening.
The framework was finalised after talks between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with both sides aiming to conclude a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement in the coming months.

Don’t Sign SelfDeportation Papers If Arrested by ICE
A recent US immigration case highlights why detainees should never rush to sign “self-removal” or voluntary deportation papers if there is any chance of release or legal relief. Immigration lawyers warn that signing such documents can permanently bar re-entry to the United States.
The warning follows the case of a 19-yearold college student arrested at Boston airport last year and swiftly deported to Honduras after signing removal papers. Her entire family lives in the US. Although a court had ordered that she not be deported while her case was pending, ICE said the order was not updated in its system. The government later admitted an error but refused to facilitate her return, closing nearly all legal paths back to the US. Experts advise detainees to seek legal counsel before signing any deportation documents.

UK Deports 60,000 Illegal Migrants in 18 Months
The UK has removed nearly 60,000 illegal migrants over the past one and a half years, marking the highest deportation drive in a decade, according to the Home Office. The move reflects what officials describe as a “silent mass deportation”, carried out without public spectacle.
Since the 2024 elections, over 15,200 undocumented migrants have been deported—about 45% higher than the previous comparable period—while nearly 43,000 others left voluntarily after receiving notices. Among those deported, 8,700 had criminal records.
The government has tightened immigration controls by shutting asylum hotels, increasing deportation flights, and cracking down on illegal boat crossings, though around 65,000 migrants reportedly entered the UK via boats in the same period. The UK is also preparing new laws to prevent migrants from evading removal.
The number of Indians leaving the UK has also risen, driven by high living costs, job shortages, visa fraud cases, and stricter enforcement.
Trade Talks Are Two-Way: Amul Chief Reassures Farmers
The India–US trade deal has triggered concerns among farmers, who fear that cheaper American imports could worsen challenges already facing the agriculture sector. However, the dairy industry believes these worries may be overstated.
Amul Managing Director Jayan Mehta said the agreement safeguards farmers’ interests while opening valuable access to the US market. He stressed that trade negotiations are inherently two-way and aimed at expanding market opportunities for Indian products. According to him, the reduction of tariffs from 50 per cent to 18 per cent will allow Indian agricultural and dairy products better entry into global markets, supporting long-term growth.
Highlighting the dairy sector’s dependence on cattle feed, Mehta explained that India already produces most required inputs domestically. Amul works with 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 villages in Gujarat and handles about 350 lakh litres of milk daily, operating eight cattle-feed plants that produce nearly 12,000 tonnes per day. He dismissed fears over imports like DDGS, noting that India has sufficient domestic supply due to ethanol production from maize and that its usage in cattle feed is limited.

Despite these assurances, farmer organisations have called for a oneday nationwide strike on February 12, alleging the deal compromises Indian agriculture and favours multinational corporations.
Doval’s Canada Visit Signals Reset, Sends Message to Khalistanis
India and Canada have taken a cautious but meaningful step toward repairing strained relations with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval’s visit to Ottawa on February 6–7, marking the most significant high-level security engagement between the two countries in recent years. The talks signal a gradual reset after ties deteriorated following a diplomatic row in 2023 over the killing of a Khalistani separatist.
Doval met Canada’s national security leadership and public safety officials, with both sides agreeing to revive structured dialogue focused on practical cooperation. The discussions resulted in a shared work plan on national security and law enforcement, emphasising result-oriented collaboration.
Trump Slammed Over ‘Racist’ Obama Video
US President Donald Trump was slammed after he posted a video on social media depicting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes. The one-minute-long video posted on Trump's Truth Social platform on Thursday repeats false allegations that ballot-counting company Dominion Voting Systems helped steal the 2020 election from him.
Near the end of the video, the Obamas are shown with their faces on ape bodies just for a second. The song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" plays in the background when the Obamas appear in the video.
US Denies Visa to Mother of Indian Student on Ventilator
Despite submitting hospital documents and seeking an emergency visa, the grieving mother was denied permission to travel.
An Indian woman has been denied a US visa despite her daughter being critically ill on a ventilator in California following a road accident in November 2025. The student, Aarti Singh, has been in a coma since the accident and doctors have informed the family that there is little hope of recovery.
While Aarti’s father is already in the US, her mother and siblings sought emergency visas to see her for the last time, submitting hospital documents during their interviews in early February. However, the visas were rejected. The family has expressed anguish over the denial and also alleged inaction by US authorities against the driver responsible for the accident.

SKOKIIE, IL -In the heart of Skokie, Illinois, a vibrant gathering took place on February 8, 2026, at 7 Spices Restaurant, where South Asian American leaders and residents united to support Bushra Amiwala’s campaign for U.S. Congress in Illinois’s 9th District. Hosted by social activist and Lincolnwood resident Iftekhar Shareef, the meet-and-greet drew an enthusiastic crowd eager to connect with the candidate and discuss the future of the district.
The event came at a pivotal moment as longtime U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky prepares to retire, setting the stage for a competitive Democratic primary on March 17, 2026. Among the contenders, Bushra Amiwala stands out for her deep local roots and record of public service. Born in Chicago and raised in neighborhoods across the district—including Skokie, Evanston, and Rogers Park—she represents what supporters proudly describe as a “homegrown fighter.”
Amiwala made national history in 2019 when, at age 21, she became the first Gen Z elected official in the United States after winning a seat on the Skokie School District 73.5 Board of Education. Over the past several years, she has built a reputation for advocating equity, accessibility, and strong public education.

Community leaders at the event praised her authenticity and connection to residents. Supporters highlighted her intelligence, approachability, and commitment to addressing key issues such as healthcare access, immigration reform, affordability, and education funding.
Addressing the crowd, Amiwala described her candidacy as a fight for working families like her own, emphasizing the need for opportunity and inclusive growth. As early voting approaches, the energy at the gathering reflected more than campaign enthusiasm—it signaled a broader movement for representation in a district shaped by increasing diversity. For many attendees, Amiwala’s campaign embodies the promise of leadership rooted in lived experience, offering a compelling vision for the future of Illinois’s 9th District.
Alex Stein Criticised for Mocking Hindu Beliefs
Alex Stein, a conservative comedian and YouTuber Alex Stein sparked outrage at a Plano City Council meeting, where he mockingly delivered a speech pretending to be an Indian and making fun of Indians and Hindu beliefs. Stein appeared before the council dressed in a yellow kurta, black shorts, slippers and a red tilak. Naseeruddin Shah
on Teaching at NSD: ‘It’s My Responsibility’
Veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, both alumni of the National School of Drama (NSD), recently revealed that they did not actually learn the craft of acting during their time at the prestigious institute. Speaking on Curtain Call With Aahana Kumra, Naseeruddin said there was “no acting teacher worth the name” at NSD when he studied there. While he learned discipline, he said the craft itself came only through years of stage experience. Ratna echoed his views, stating that even seven years later, when she joined NSD, the situation had not improved. Naseeruddin added that he believes it still hasn’t. The actor explained that this gap is why he keeps returning to NSD to teach. Calling himself a “failure” by his own definition, he said teaching students has helped him learn more about acting than his decades-long career. Recently, Naseeruddin also sparked debate after alleging he was disinvited from a Mumbai University event.
Naseeruddin said, “There was no acting teacher worth the name at NSD when I was there.” He shared how one teacher at the institute taught him the discipline of acting, but no one taught him about the craft during his time there. “But as far as the craft of the work itself, apart from gaining experience in acting over several plays over the years, I didn’t learn anything about acting while I was at NSD,”
Budget Row Delays Krrish 4: Hrithik vs Aditya Chopra
Hrithik Roshan as Krrish is one of the most celebrated characters of Indian Cinema, and the last decade has seen a pent-up demand from the audience to see the return of this franchise for the fourth time. Hrithik was receptive to the audience and announced Krrish 4 in association with Yash Raj Films. This time around, the actor is donning a dual hat - of an actor and a director too, as Krrish 4 is to mark his debut as a director.
But it seems that the fans will have to wait a little longer for Krrish 4. Reliable sources have confirmed that Krrish 4 has gone on back-burner as Hrithik Roshan and Aditya Chopra are not aligning on the budget of this superhero epic. "Hrithik Roshan wants to make the film at a huge budget close to Rs. 500 crores, and Aditya Chopra believes that it's essential to have an upper cap to the film around the Rs. 350 crore mark. After multiple rounds of discussions, the duo have at the moment put Krrish 4 on the back burner," a source told. Hrithik is meanwhile exploring the possibilities of collaborating with another studio on Krrish 4, and also reworking the script, keeping budget restrictions in mind. "Hrithik is also a practical guy and has taken Aditya Chopra's feedback positively. He is relooking at certain feedback given by Adi, and at the same time in talks with other studios to fund the film. He is also looking to start another film before completely moving into Krrish 4. He has read multiple scripts and will green-light one very soon."

Amruta Khanvilkar
Speaks on Stigma of Being a Marathi Actor

Now, Amruta takes on an action-packed role in Neeraj Pandey’s Netflix web series Taskaree. In addition to this action drama, she is also seen in Jio Hotstar’s show Space Gen Chandrayaan. Recently, in an exclusive conversation the actress spoke about performing action sequences for the first time in Taskaree, as well as continuing to face stigma for being an actor from the Marathi industry.
On Taskaree and Space Gen
For the first time in her 21-year career, Amruta Khanvilkar embraced an action-packed role in Taskaree, an experience she found deeply liberating. The actress also recalled how she got injured during the shoot of the show. “I was actually supposed to play another role in Taskaree and was required to just shoot for six days. Then they asked me to also audition for Mitali’s character. They wanted to see if I could do action, since I dance, and choreography for me comes easily. I wasn’t considered for it first; that’s how it happens in the industry. Who bags what part when? You cannot figure that out,” Amruta said.
Ghuskhor Pandit Controversy Lands in Court; Netflix Reconsiders Release
Trouble continues to mount for Manoj Bajpayee’s film Ghuskhor Pandit. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reportedly personally instructed the state’s law enforcement agencies to register an FIR against the director, producers and members of the film’s team. This development significantly adds to the growing list of challenges confronting the project.
The teaser trailer of Ghuskhor Pandit—which translates to “corrupt priest” has triggered nationwide protests. Several organisations and individuals have demanded that the film’s title, which they describe as “casteist”, be changed immediately.
The Sarva Brahmin Mahasabha in Jaipur has strongly opposed the title, stating that the controversy extends beyond cinema or entertainment value. According to the organisation, the title reflects a deepening caste-based mindset that it finds unacceptable. In Bhopal, members of the Brahmin community have taken to the streets to protest against the film and its title, demanding that the trailer be removed. Protesters have warned of nationwide agitation if their demands are not met. The matter has also reached the courts. A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Delhi High Court challenging the film’s title.

Prakash Raj No Longer Part of Spirit
National Award-winning actor Prakash Raj is said to have been dropped from the highly anticipated Telugu action drama Spirit, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and headlined by Prabhas and Triptii Dimri. The development has drawn attention after the film’s launch, where Raj’s name and voice had featured prominently in early promotional material. Spirit, which is being shot in Hyderabad and has generated significant buzz as one of the most ambitious projects in South Indian cinema, now appears to be facing internal challenges beyond its scale and star cast. A report by OTT Play suggests that creative disagreements and on-set friction between Prakash Raj and the filmmaking team may have led to the actor’s exit.
Actor Vikrant Massey addressed widespread rumours surrounding his alleged role in Ramayana, a two-part film directed by Nitesh Tiwari, and reports that he was replaced by Raghav Juyal. I never was a part of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayan,” he wrote, reflecting on the coverage that suggested he had lost a role in the film. “The many media portals reporting about my supposed ‘replacement’ should’ve done the requisite background check. Disappointing. Nonetheless, wishing everyone a part of the movie all the very best. Love.”

US and Iran talks to begin as fears of direct conflict continue
Senior US and Iranian officials are expected to meet in Oman later for direct talks amid a crisis that has raised fears of a military confrontation between the two countries. The discussions come after a US military build-up in the Middle East in response to Iran's violent repression of nationwide anti-government protests last month, that human rights groups say killed many thousands of people. Uncertainty over the location and scope had threatened to derail the talks, which are part of a diplomatic effort by regional mediators to deescalate tensions.
Both countries remain far apart in their positions. The hope is that, if successful, the discussions could lead to a framework for negotiations.

Bangladesh Seeks US Trade Deal After India’s Tariff Win
Bangladesh has scrambled to finalise the deal after the India-US trade agreement that reduced tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent. Bangladesh fears losing market share to India if it cannot secure equally competitive or better terms.
The United States and Bangladesh are set to sign a trade agreement on February 9, just three days before Bangladesh’s national elections on February 12, triggering controversy over secrecy and timing. The deal is being rushed after the India–US trade agreement cut tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent, raising fears in Dhaka of losing market share, especially in ready-made garments (RMG), which make up nearly 90 per
cent of Bangladesh’s exports to the US. Washington had imposed a 37 per cent tariff on Bangladeshi goods in April 2025, later reduced to 20 per cent by August. The new agreement is expected to bring tariffs down further to 15 per cent. However, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has signed a non-disclosure agreement with the US, keeping all negotiations confidential, with no details shared with parliament or industry.

Melania Documentary Debuted at No.3 on Box office, Made $7.1 Million Sales
Zofeen
Maqsood
The Melania documentary made a high-profile debut at the domestic box office, opening at No. 3 with $7.1 million in ticket sales across the U.S. and Canada—the strongest opening for a documentary since 2013. It outperformed recent genre releases, though its international rollout was limited, earning about $25,000 overseas for a worldwide opening of $7.18 million.
Despite the impressive start, some analysts have questioned whether
the turnout reflects organic demand. Veteran box office watcher Tom Brueggemann pointed to unusual midweek ticketing patterns and suggested that bulk purchases may
have boosted attendance, though hard evidence remains limited and major theater chains have denied seeing irregular activity. Studio representatives, meanwhile, have emphasized that Melania delivered the largest opening for a nonmusical documentary in a decade. With a reported $75 million production and marketing budget, profitability through theaters alone appears unlikely, making its eventual performance on Prime Video far more critical.
Reports suggest US conditions include reducing imports from China, increasing military purchases from the US, and allowing American goods to enter Bangladesh without inspections or challenges to US standards. Economists and business leaders warn the opaque deal could bind the next elected government and threaten millions of jobs in Bangladesh’s garment sector if terms are less competitive than India’s.
US Sees Big Scope for India’s Agri Imports
Days after US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Leslie Rollins said the India-US trade deal would expand access for American farm products, the US Department of Agriculture told The Indian Express that India has “significant potential” to step up agricultural imports from their country, which were earlier hampered by “high” and “unjust” tariffs.
Responding to a questionnaire from this newspaper, addressed to Rollins, on the agricultural components of the trade deal, a USDA spokesperson stated: “India has significant potential to expand imports of US agricultural products. High tariffs, unjustified non-tariff measures and other restrictions have afflicted US products across the board. Reductions in these barriers, and reforms in India’s overly generous subsidy programs, could help to level the playing field for US farmers, ranchers and producers and support more balanced, mutually beneficial trade over time.”
The spokesperson stated: “USDA’s Three-Point Plan, announced in September 2025, works to chip away at the $50 billion agricultural deficit through market promotion support, rapid response to reciprocal trade agreements, and boosting rural prosperity.”

ICE Identifies 89 Indians in 'Worst of the Worst' Criminal Database
WASHINGTON, DC-At least 89 Indian nationals have been identified in a “worst of the worst” criminal database released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), highlighting individuals arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The move comes as federal authorities expand deportation efforts targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions.
According to DHS, the individuals named in the database have been convicted of a range of serious offenses, including sexual assault, drug trafficking, domestic violence, robbery, fraud, and money laundering. The public portal is available at https://www.dhs.gov/wow
.DHS stated that the database reflects enforcement actions carried out under Secretary Kristi Noem’s leadership and aligns with President Donald Trump’s priority of removing criminal undocumented immigrants from the
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Announces Free Elections Act
Legislation Reaffirms That DHS, ICE, and CBP Agents Cannot Be Deployed at Election Sites
WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi today announced that he will soon introduce the Free Elections Act in response to President Donald Trump’s recent comments urging Republicans to “take over” and “nationalize” American elections. The legislation is designed to reinforce and clarify longstanding constitutional and statutory protections that prohibit the use of federal power to interfere with U.S. elections—making it unmistakably clear that elections belong to the people, not to any political party or president.
“President Trump’s call for Republicans to ‘take over’ and ‘nationalize’ our elections is already unconstitutional and illegal,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. “This is not a hypothetical threat. President Trump has previously misused federal law enforcement agencies such as ICE and CBP as political tools—causing real harm and impacting lives. As
Congress negotiates DHS reforms and funding, the Free Elections Act removes any ambiguity and makes clear that no president—Donald Trump or anyone else—can invoke emergency powers or deploy federal forces, including DHS, ICE, or CBP agents, to interfere with elections or override the will of the voters.”
The Free Elections Act will reaffirm and strengthen existing prohibitions against using emergency powers to interfere with elections, including the misuse of authorities under the Insurrection Act, the National Emergencies Act, and related federal statutes. The bill reinforces long-established bans on deploying federal forces or law enforcement, including DHS agents, at election sites and clarifies that emergency authorities may not be used to control, monitor, or influence the electoral process.
United States. Officials recently added 5,000 more individuals to the portal, bringing the total number of profiles to approximately 25,000. The department described the database as a “snapshot” of arrests made by ICE and CBP. “We are not stopping until every single one of these people are gone,” DHS said in an official statement, emphasizing that the public identification of those arrested is intended to demonstrate the work of federal officers. “Americans should not be victimized by people who aren’t even legally allowed to inhabit our nation,” the statement added. The release comes amid increased scrutiny of immigration enforcement operations. ICE and border agents have faced criticism following a recent crackdown in Minneapolis that coincided with the deaths of two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Despite the backlash, DHS maintains that its enforcement actions are focused on individuals it describes as violent or repeat offenders who are in the country illegally.

Tensions Rise at Frisco City Council Meeting Amid Attacks on Indian American Residents
DALLAS, TX – A tense and emotional confrontation unfolded at the Frisco City Council meeting on February 3, as a packed chamber included Indian Americans and right-wing activists, many of whom had traveled from outside the city. According to The Dallas Observer and The Dallas Morning News, the meeting turned into a verbal clash over immigration. Several critics wore “America First” hats and other rightwing symbols, while reports noted that conservative influencers had encouraged supporters from across North Texas to attend and oppose what they called a “massive Indian takeover.”
Indian American residents strongly pushed back, emphasizing their roles as citizens, taxpayers, and contributors to the city’s growth.
Critics alleged that H-1B visa fraud was driving Frisco’s demographic changes. City data shows Indians and other Asians now make up about 33% of the population, up from 10% in 2010. However, the City Council has no authority over federal visa policy.

Physician Shomir Banerjee Among Seven Arrested in Alleged Hospice Fraud Scheme
OAKLAND, CA- Physician Shomir Banerjee is among seven individuals arrested and charged in connection with an alleged hospice fraud scheme in Monterey County, California, Attorney General Rob Bonta announced. Banerjee, identified as a medical director, is one of three physicians named in the case, alongside hospice owners and a head nurse, following a multi-year investigation into fraudulent billing practices involving Medi-Cal and Medicare.
According to the California Department of Justice, the investigation revealed an organized conspiracy involving three hospice providers—Spiritual Touch Hospice, Compassionate Touch Hospice, and Fountain Hospice. Authorities allege that the defendants owned, operated, or worked across the companies simultaneously and enrolled patients who were not terminally ill, making them ineligible for hospice care. Investigators further reported that
some patients were unaware they had been placed in hospice programs or that such services are intended only for individuals with terminal conditions.
To avoid regulatory scrutiny, patients were allegedly transferred between the three hospice companies after six months, allowing the fraudulent billing to continue without raising immediate red flags.
Officials estimate the scheme caused financial losses totaling $3,211,419.79 to Medi-Cal and Medicare.
On January 30, 2026, the Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse filed felony charges in Monterey County Superior Court against Nimfa Molina, Luis Artavia, Mark Samonte, Shomir Banerjee, and hospice owners Danny Lodevico, Flor Mora, and Christine Nugiud-Yem. Charges include submitting false or fraudulent claims, conspiracy to commit a crime, and aggravated white-collar crime enhancements.
REAL IDs will continue to be available at DMV locations statewide and at the Chicago REAL ID Supercenter. Residents can schedule appointments or find facilities online.

Super Bowl May have Generated $370 million-$630 million for Bay Area
The Super Bowl, the biggest event in American football, took place Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the San Francisco Bay Area as the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots.
Host cities have long touted the Super Bowl as a major economic driver, and local officials say this year’s event lived up to that reputation at least in the short term.
Last year’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana, brought an estimated 115,000 visitors who spent roughly $658 million, according to state officials. For the Bay Area, the Host Committee projected economic activity ranging from $370 million to $630 million, fueled largely by more than 90,000 visitors expected to travel from outside the region.
Those estimates account not only for spending by fans on hotels, dining, and attractions, but also for costs incurred by the NFL itself, including housing, feeding, and transporting players and staff, along with broader logistical

Hindi-USA Earns Prestigious ACSWASC Accreditation
ST LOUIS, MO -Hindi-USA has reached a significant milestone by receiving initial accreditation from the ACS-WASC (Accrediting Commission for Schools – Western Association of Schools and Colleges) in the United States. This recognition represents an important advancement for Hindi language education and reflects the organization’s strong commitment to academic excellence, organizational integrity, and continuous improvement. The accreditation initiative was spearheaded by Mayank Jain, Founder of Hindi-USA Saint Louis, with support from leadership and coordinators across more than 10 schools nationwide. He described the achievement as a true team effort that highlights the collective dedication of the entire Hindi-USA network.
Key contributors to this success included organizational leader Devendra Singh, Treasurer Raj Mittal, Online School Coordinator Rajive Srivastava, regional coordinators, and numerous volunteers who worked collaboratively throughout the process.
This recognition validates Hindi-USA’s
long-standing mission to provide high-quality, proficiency-based Hindi education and creates renewed momentum to further strengthen Hindi instruction across the United States.
The accreditation followed a rigorous self-study and a comprehensive evaluation conducted by an official ACS-WASC visiting committee. The review closely examined Hindi-USA’s academic framework, instructional practices, leadership capacity, and long-
term strategic vision. The nearly two-year journey toward accreditation was both demanding and rewarding. The process initially began with Cognia before transitioning to WASC to better align with the organization’s long-term academic objectives. International Achievers Awards & Fashion Gala 2026 Dazzles Chicago
CHICAGO, IL - Braving one of Chicago’s harshest winter nights in recent memory, the International Achievers Awards & International Fashion Gala 2026 unfolded as an evening of warmth, elegance, and global inspiration. The event was seamlessly hosted by acclaimed anchor Prachi Jaitly, whose poise and energy set the tone for a memorable celebration of excellence. The gala was spearheaded by Meena Israni, Founder of Dubaibased Being Muskaan Events, known for producing prestigious platforms such as the Gulf Achievers Awards and MasterChef Gulf. Renowned for blending prestige with purpose, Israni brings together leaders, innovators, and changemakers who embody leadership and community impact. The Chicago gala marked her first major event in the United States, reflecting her expanding global vision.
Chief Guests Jawaharial Williams, Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives (10th District), and Harry Benton, Representative of the 97th District, lent gravitas to the evening with their commitment to public service and community empowerment. Guests of Honor included Ajeet Singh, President of Midway Business Broker and the Indian American Business Council, celebrated for scaling his firm to remarkable growth, and Iftekhar Shareef, recognized as the world’s first Overseas Citizen of India for his decades of diplomatic and cultural contributions.
Fashion emerged as a powerful expression of heritage and identity. Amitha Fashions showcased Indo-Western and bridal
collections blending traditional silks with contemporary design, while Suchita Pandey highlighted timeless craftsmanship through classic Indian textiles. Neena Fashion’s “Shining Stars” collection delivered bold narratives rooted in tradition yet styled for the modern era.
The evening was further elevated by captivating performances from dancer Minoo Vasudevan and Bollywood playback singer S. Shubham, whose heartfelt live performance resonated deeply with attendees.
The awards honored a distinguished group of global changemakers across business, education, beauty, media, and entrepreneurship. Among the highlights, Prachi Jaitly received Excellence in Global Media & Arts, Canadian International Scholars School was recognized for Global Excellence and Diversity, and Regal Jewels celebrated over 35 years of legacy with Best Jewelry Brand of the Year.
Reflecting on the occasion, Suresh Bodiwala, Chairman and Founder of Asian Media USA, described the gathering as one of the most prestigious ceremonies the organization has covered. Despite the extreme cold, the gala united politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, and cultural ambassadors in a shared celebration of achievement. More than an event, it stood as a powerful reminder that vision, passion, and unity can outshine even the harshest winter—turning a freezing Chicago night into an unforgettable celebration of global excellence.
the return of former students as educators — a powerful example of community engagement and sustainability.
Practical and Long-Term Impact of Accreditation
A key outcome of this accreditation is that Hindi-USA students may now be eligible to receive Foreign Language credits from many public school districts in the United States. In the U.S. education system, students typically earn foreign-language credits for languages such as French, Spanish, German, or Latin, which appear on high-school transcripts and support graduation and college readiness. Because Hindi is often not directly offered in public schools due to enrollment thresholds, staffing limitations, or budget constraints, many students lack access to formal credit for studying Hindi language. With this accreditation, students studying Hindi through Hindi-USA can now earn equivalent foreign-language credits, a development widely regarded as a historic advancement for Hindi education in the United States.

Young Artists Bring Sikh Empire’s Golden Era to Life at PCS Chicago Drawing Competition
Punjab 1799–1849 Comes Alive: Heartwarming Youth Art Showcase Lights Up the Windy City
CHICAGO, IL - On a crisp Sunday morning, January 18, 2026, the National India Hub in Schaumburg, Illinois, came alive with color, creativity, and cultural pride as the Punjabi Cultural Society (PCS) of Chicago hosted its second annual Youth Art and Drawing Competition. More than 30 students from elementary through high school participated, exploring the theme “Punjab in the Era 1799–1849,” inspired by the Sikh Empire of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The competition was more than an artistic exercise— it served as a bridge between generations, helping diaspora youth connect with their heritage. Known as the “Lion of Punjab,” Maharaja Ranjit Singh unified the region after capturing Lahore in 1799 and established a secular empire celebrated for religious tolerance, military strength, and cultural prosperity until 1849.
Through vivid drawings of the Harmandir Sahib, royal courts, warriors, and pastoral landscapes, students brought this historic era to life with imagination and pride.
PCS leaders warmly welcomed families, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to preserving culture through youth engagement. President Bikram Singh Sohi, Vice President Gurlal Singh Bhattal, Executive Secretary Gurpreet Singh Sidhu, and organizer Paramvir Kaur ensured a seamless and inspiring event.
A standout moment came when Dr. Primal Kaur, PCS Chairwoman for 2026 and Senior Vice President at AbbVie, encouraged students to embrace their roots.
“Keep drawing, keep dreaming, and keep Punjab proud,” she said, applauding the personal stories reflected in each artwork.
Illinois State Senator Karina Villa, representing the 25th District, added civic significance to the celebration. Highlighting resilience and community strength, she reminded students that “nothing is impossible” when dedication meets opportunity. Judges evaluated entries on originality, historical accuracy, technique, and emotional impact before announcing winners across all grade levels. The ceremony concluded with cheers, photographs, and recognition of past student achievements.
As PCS looks ahead to its flagship Rangla Punjab celebration on April 25, 2026, the competition reaffirmed a powerful truth: nurturing culture in young minds ensures that heritage, identity, and history continue to flourish for generations.

Virginia Senate Panel Advances Bill to Protect Consumers from Crypto Kiosk Fraud
HiIndia Newsdesk
RICHMOND, VA — Members of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee voted unanimously Wednesday morning to advance a bill aimed at protecting consumers from cryptocurrency fraud and moneylaundering scams.
Senate Bill 389, introduced by Sen. Saddam Salim (D-Fairfax), focuses on the rapid growth of crypto kiosk machines across Virginia that are increasingly targeting elderly individuals, immigrants, and other vulnerable communities.
“These kiosks are showing up in dollar stores, gas stations, and other public locations, allowing people to convert cash into cryptocurrency and send it instantly,” Salim told the committee. “Unfortunately, scammers are exploiting this convenience.”
According to Salim, many victims are not technologically savvy or lack traditional banking access. The scams often begin with deceptive phone calls—frequently someone posing as a grandchild or relative in distress, claiming they have been arrested or urgently need financial help. Victims are then instructed to deposit money into a crypto kiosk. The machine converts the cash into digital currency and generates a code, which scammers use
to quickly redeem the funds, leaving victims with little chance of recovery.
“At the moment, these machines operate with minimal oversight,” Salim said. “This legislation would establish guidelines requiring clear disclosures warning consumers about potential fraud, giving them an opportunity to reconsider before completing a transaction.”
If enacted, the bill would impose daily and monthly transaction limits, cap fees at 18 percent, and require kiosk operators to obtain licenses. Operators would also need to submit annual and quarterly reports, provide consumer disclosures, and take reasonable measures to detect and prevent fraud and money laundering.
Sen. Ryan McDougle (R-Mechanicsville) praised the proposal, noting that a 48-hour hold period could help victims recover funds in suspected fraud cases.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D-Mount Vernon) shared the story of his 72-year-old cousin from Roanoke who lost $15,000 after receiving a fraudulent call claiming a family member was in jail.
The committee voted 15-0 to recommend the bill for its first of three readings on the Senate floor, potentially as early as Wednesday afternoon.
NY and NJ Sues Trump Administration After $16B Funds Frozen
NEW YORK, NY — New York and New Jersey have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration after it froze $16 billion in federal funding for the construction of a new rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River. Officials warn that without the release of funds, ongoing construction could shut down within days.
The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court by New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, seeks a ruling that the funding freeze is unlawful and demands that payments resume immediately to avoid halting the project.
“Allowing this project to stop would put one of the country’s most heavily used transit corridors at risk,” James said, noting that the region’s existing tunnels are already under severe strain.
Landmark rail expansion poised to ease congestion and secure the future of Northeast travel
A separate lawsuit has also been filed by the Gateway Development Commission, the agency overseeing the project. The Gateway Tunnel project is designed
to create a new rail link between New York and New Jersey for Amtrak and regional transit trains while rehabilitating a 116-year-old tunnel damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Construction began in 2023 after receiving federal approval during President Joe Biden’s administration.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill warned that a shutdown could cost about 1,000 workers their jobs and disrupt reliable service for thousands of commuters. Governor Kathy Hochul echoed the concern, vowing legal action and calling the funding halt a threat to union jobs, economic growth, and daily travel for nearly 200,000 riders.
The Trump administration paused the funding during a government shutdown, citing concerns over what it described as unconstitutional diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. The White House has not yet commented on the lawsuits.
International Sting Brings Down $48 Million Call Center Scam
The FBI reports that about 660 Americans lost nearly $48.8 million to government impersonation and tech support scams run by the syndicates since 2022.
BALTIMORE, MD-A major international scam network has been dismantled through a joint effort by U.S. federal agencies and India’s Central Bureau of Investigation. In December 2025, multiple illegal call centers in India were shut down, and six alleged ringleaders were arrested.
The FBI reports that about 660 Americans lost nearly $48.8 million to government impersonation and tech support scams run by the syndicates since 2022. Maryland was heavily affected, with almost two dozen victims losing over $6.2 million.
Scammers posed as officials from agencies such as the Social Security Administration and the FBI, threatening victims with arrest and coercing them into transferring money via cryptocurrency or wire transfers. Authorities credited victim reports for helping expose the operation. Since 2024, Maryland law enforcement has also arrested eight suspects, including three directly tied to the Indian call centers, highlighting the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation.
Indian-Origin Man Arrested Following HighSpeed Police Chase
CLIFTON, NJ – A 38-year-old man, Vishal Bhatt, is facing multiple criminal and motor vehicle charges after allegedly leading East Rutherford police on a high-speed chase and later calling the department to boast about evading officers.
The incident began on January 28 when Bhatt contacted police to complain about a traffic ticket. During the call, his remarks raised concern, prompting officers to conduct a wellbeing check.
When officers arrived at his location, they found Bhatt inside a white Kia Rio. According to police, he immediately fled upon seeing officers. Capt. Jeff Yannacone stated that Bhatt sped through a stop sign, improperly passed another vehicle, and nearly collided with oncoming traffic. Officers attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop, but Bhatt allegedly accelerated at a high rate of speed, illegally passing several vehicles and placing the public at risk. Due to the dangerous conditions, officers terminated the pursuit; however, they were able to positively identify him as the driver.
Police said Bhatt later called the department multiple times, allegedly bragging about his ability to elude officers.
The situation concluded on January 30 when officers located Bhatt in Clifton and placed him under arrest.

SACRAMENTO, CA- The founder of a Stockton-based motorcycle club has pleaded guilty to federal charges involving illegal firearms trafficking and possession of a machine gun, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California announced. Jashanpreet Singh, 27, of Lodi, admitted to unlawfully dealing in firearms and illegally possessing a machine gun, according to U.S. Attorney Eric Grant, who announced the plea on February 2. Federal prosecutors said Singh founded the “Punjabi Devils” Motorcycle Club, described in court filings as an outlaw motorcycle gang affiliated with the Hells Angels. Authorities also seized a capped and fused pineapple-style hand grenade and an item believed to be a militarygrade electronic claymore mine. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Detail safely destroyed both explosive devices at the scene.
Singh was initially charged in San Joaquin County Superior Court but failed to appear for a scheduled hearing on July 21, 2025, prompting a bench warrant for his arrest. Two days later, the FBI was notified by U.S. Customs and Border Protection that Singh had booked a flight to India scheduled to depart from San Francisco International Airport on July 26, 2025. Law enforcement officers arrested Singh at the airport before his departure, and he has remained in federal custody since. “This case reflects the serious threat posed by illegal firearms trafficking and automatic weapons,” Grant said. Singh is scheduled to be sentenced on May 11, 2026, by U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd. He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for illegal firearms dealing, as well as up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for possession of a machine gun. Romance Scams on the Rise: FBI Warns Public to Stay Alert
JACKSONVILLE, FL -February is often associated with love and connection. Unfortunately, not everyone seeking romance has good intentions. The FBI Jacksonville Field Office is urging the public to remain vigilant against criminals who pose as perfect partners to exploit both hearts and wallets. In 2025, more than 550 victims across Jacksonville, Daytona, Gainesville, Tallahassee, and the Florida Panhandle reported losses totaling $22.2 million due to romance scams. Nationwide, complaints and financial losses from confidence and romance fraud surpassed those documented in the 2024 Internet Crime Complaint Center Annual Report, confirming that this threat continues to grow— not just in February, but throughout the year. Authorities believe many incidents still go unreported. Romance scammers use sophisticated, well-practiced tactics to deceive unsuspecting individuals. Many create fake

Once contact is established, scammers often overwhelm victims with attention and affection while avoiding in-person meetings, frequently citing overseas work, travel obligations, or family emergencies. for plane tickets, unexpected work expenses, or urgent medical needs. Some lure victims into seemingly lucrative but secret investment opportunities, urging them to send large sums while discouraging them from discussing the matter with friends or family.
Law enforcement is also seeing a rise in scammers leveraging generative AI to expand their reach and increase credibility. These tools help criminals produce convincing photos, eliminate language errors through translation, and create more believable online identities—making it harder than ever to distinguish fraud from genuine connection.
Protect Yourself
• If you develop a romantic relationship with someone you meet online, consider the following precautions:
• Research photos and profiles using reverse image searches and ask detailed questions.
• Never share sensitive personal information such as your Social Security number, home address, or financial details.
• Do not send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to someone you have never met in person.
• Be cautious of anyone attempting to isolate you from family and friends.
• Watch for dramatic stories intended to gain sympathy— scammers often fabricate tragedies to justify financial requests.
• If meeting someone for the first time, choose a public location and inform a trusted person of your plans.
When traveling abroad to meet someone, review the U.S. State Department Travel Advisories (http://travel.state.gov ), share your itinerary, and avoid traveling alone if possible. Many victims hesitate to report these crimes due to embarrassment or shame. However, it is important to remember that romance scams can happen to anyone, at any time. Reporting suspicious activity can help protect others and prevent further financial loss.
