rime Minister Narendra Modi on November 11 — Diwali day — visited forward areas in Punjab, close to the India-Pakistan international border, to spend time with army personnel on the occasion of Diwali.

The visit of the prime minister was kept under wraps by defense authorities.

“People celebrate Diwali with their family members and loved ones. I too have come to celebrate it with you,” he said while addressing army personnel after paying homage to martyrs at the Dograi War Memorial at Khasa near Amritsar.

It was at this site that Indian troops fought one of the toughest battles against Pakistani troops and triumphed 50 years ago.

“I am honored to be among you today on the occasion of Diwali,” said Modi, sporting an army cap. “I spent time with our soldiers and we had a wonderful conversation,” Modi tweeted.

iwali, the festival of lights, was celebrated on Wednesday with gaiety and enthusiasm in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The skies lighted up with firecrackers while homes and shops were illuminated with “diyas” to mark the festival.

People, especially youngsters were in jovial mode as they burst firecrackers after the sunset. Fireworks lit the streets in Hyderabad and other major towns in Telangana and in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawda, Guntur, Tirupati and other places in neighboring Andhra Pradesh.

Scenes of communal harmony were witnessed as people of other communities joined Hindus in the celebrations. Muslims were seen greeting their Hindu friends. People of the two communities also exchanged sweets.

The market was teeming with shoppers during the day. Cracker shops set up in open places witnessed huge rush.

Widows celebrate Diwali in Vrindavan

efying age-old traditions, around 1,000 old-aged widows on Tuesday came together to participate in the twoday Diwali celebrations on the bank of Yamuna river and five widows ashrams in Vrindavan.

These women turned out in a procession carrying earthen lamps and converged on the river banks at the KC ghat after decorating their ashrams, which have been tastefully decorated with rangoli and lights.

All the half a dozen ashrams, where Sulabh International provide assistance, have been spruced up as per the festival.

“To bring a ray of happiness at their twilight years, we have come up with this unique idea to organize the festival of lights, especially for the widows,” said Sulabh Movement founder Bindeshwar Pathak.

It is for the third consecutive time that the event is being organized in a big way by the NGO, which has been organizing Holi festival for widows.

ith President Barack Obama set to push for a global agreement at the upcoming climate talks in Paris, the US has expressed hope that India would step up and make an important contribution.

“We certainly would expect that India would contribute to this broader global effort,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on November 9 while acknowledging that “this is something that is economically challenging for India.

“But at the same time, we have seen India take important steps in the past,” he said noting that Indians had earlier made a commitment to limit hydrofluoric carbons.

These, Earnest noted, “have a much more significant impact on bringing about climate change than just the burning of oil and gas.”

“So there’s been a willingness on the part of the Indians in the past to make important commitments that contribute to this broader effort,” he said. “But we certainly would like to see a country with an economy as large as India step up and make an

in Paris on Nov 30 and Dec 1 with the US pushing for an agreement that does three things: First, it reflects the ambitious climate targets from all of the participating countries; Second, it puts in place a longterm framework that incentivizes countries to ratchet down their emissions over time in a transparent manner, with high standards of accountability, and with the goal of achieving a low-carbon transformation by the end of the century.

Third, it mobilizes ongoing financial and technical support for low-carbon development and climate adaptation, especially for poorest and most vulnerable countries.

Earnest noted “that some of the poorest countries are the ones who are most vulnerable to the most tangible climate impacts that are already being felt around the globe.”

“Scientists agree that we’re already feeling the effects of climate change around the globe,” he said.

WASHINGTON: The US introduced new airport security measures as a result of the ongoing investigation into the last week’s Russian airliner tragedy on Egypt’s Sinai peninsula, the country’s Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has said.

The stepped-up measures “will supplement the US aviation security requirements currently in place at all of foreign last-point-of-departure airports, as well as the additional security enhancements I directed last summer at certain foreign locations”, Johnson said.

He said while investigation into the crash continues, “precautionary measures” will be increased.

n the midst of a presidential campaign by his second son, former President George H.W. Bush has criticized two top aides of his first son saying they ill served him after the Sep 11, 2001 terror attacks.

But even as he criticized former vice president Richard B. Cheney and former defense secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, the elder Bush did not fully absolve his son George Bush for some of what took place

saying, “The buck stops there” in the Oval Office.

The critiques of Cheney and Rumsfeld are contained in a new biography Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush by Jon Meacham. In interviews to Meacham, the elder Bush, who served as the 41st president, called Cheney an “iron-ass” and labelled Rumsfeld “an arrogant fellow.”

Bush told Meacham he thought that the famously influential vice president carved out “his own

empire” in the White House “and marched to his own drummer.”

Bush felt that Cheney, who served as defense secretary during his own administration, had changed as vice president. Cheney grew “very hard line” and in response to the terrorist

attacks of 9-11. Bush also charged that Rumsfeld “served the president badly” and was an “arrogant fellow”.

But Bush also directed some criticism toward his son as well. He told Meacham that he still supports his son’s decision to invade Iraq.

Maggi returns to market

After a five-month legal battle, Maggi noodles, having cleared all tests ordered

estle India on November 9 said it has begun the roll-out of Maggi noodles in 100 cities, terming the five-month ban as “one of the biggest crises” it has faced in the 32-year history of the brand in the country. It also announced a pact with Snapdeal for online sales.

“The return of Maggi Noodles on the auspicious eve of Deepawali and on the day of Dhanteras is a moment of celebration for all of us,” Nestle India chairman and managing director Suresh Narayanan said, announcing the relaunch, after it was taken off the shelves on June 5.

“The crisis we went through is a big one for Nestle India. But we were always confident about the quality and safety of Maggi noodles.

It is an important brand for the

company,” Narayanan told a round-table with journalists to announce the re-launch.

The first to hit the shelves will be the masala variant, which will be available in single, twin, four and six packs. Other variants will follow later, he said.

NEW DELHI: A special CBI team interrogating long-absconding underworld don Chhota Rajan will visit Karnataka in a couple of days to enquire from the regional passport officials who had issued him a passport in 2003 on a fake name and address.

The passport was made using the Tatkal (urgent) service with its validity date till 2008, sources said. “But Rajan managed to renew it on July 8, 2008 with its validity till July 7, 2018.”

ihar’s electorate has sent Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a message: “Put an end to hatemongering”, said the influential New York Times on November 10.

An editorial “A rebuke to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi” in the New York Times said that during a national election in India last year, Modi promised “development for all”.

As prime minister, he has yet to deliver big economic improvements, “but in the meantime, members of his government and political party have shredded his promise of inclusion by inflaming sectarian tensions”.

“Now, voters in the country’s third most populous state have sent Modi a message: Put an end to

the hatemongering,” said the daily.

The editorial said that “poisoning politics with religious hatred is

bound to squander the country’s economic potential at a time when India should be playing a bigger and more constructive role in South Asia and the world”.

“India’s history is filled with examples of religious and castebased violence that set the country back. Those conflicts subsided during India’s rapid economic growth, but many Indians now fear a resurgence.”

The daily said that many political analysts see the loss in Bihar as a “repudiation of Modi” because he and his top aides campaigned vigorously in the state and many ads carried his image, rather than photos of local politicians.

In the months leading up to the Bihar election, hard-liners in the

BJP and organizations affiliated with the party stoked India’s longsimmering sectarian tensions.

“The party’s lawmakers pushed for beef bans around the country ostensibly to protect the cow, which many Hindus consider holy, but really as a ploy to divide Hindus and Muslims, some of whom eat beef.”

n a verdict that is bound to have a national impact, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Lalu Prasad on Sunday trounced the BJP to win the bitterly fought Bihar assembly polls and deliver a major blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who led his party’s challenge.

In contrast to what most exit polls had said, the Grand Alliance of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress won a whopping 178 of the 243 seats, leaving the BJP — which wanted to oust Nitish Kumar — and its allies with just 58 seats.

The RJD and JD-U ended up winning 80 and 71 seats each and the Congress 27. The BJP was the winner in 53 constituencies, and three allies — the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) — could together bag only five seats (2, 1, 2 respectively).

The Communist Party of IndiaMarxist-Leninist-Liberation had won three seats and Independents four. The much-maligned Lalu Prasad’s RJD ended up as the single biggest party.

“This is a very big victory. We accept it with humility,” Nitish Kumar said in his first comments.

This is contrary to common perception that the overwhelming upper castes supported and voted the BJP-led NDA in Bihar assembly polls. The grand alliance defeated the NDA candidates with support from the upper castes, not only the OBCs, Muslims and Dalits.

Lalu Prasad’s RJD has fielded five upper caste candidates — three won the polls and two were defeated.

Congress fielded 16 upper caste candidates, of whom 12 won the polls.

Similarly JD-U fielded 18 upper caste candidates and majority of them won the polls.

According to Congress leaders here, 12 of the 27 Congress candidates elected to the Bihar assembly are upper castes.

BJP has fielded 69 upper caste candidates, but only 22 of them won the polls. Most of the upper caste candidates of BJP allies Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), and Hindus-

tani Awam Morch (HAM) were defeated.

Former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM contested from 20 seats but won only one seat.

The party’s sole victor was Manjhi himself. He won from Imamganj in Gaya, his home district.

Both Ram Vilas Paswan and Manjhi failed to attract Dalit voters.

Can Nitish be a rallying figure for opposition?

s the Bihar assembly election results started pouring in, veteran Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar made a serious mistake while going through his otherwise admirable election analysis on CNN-IBN. Faced with a question whether Nitish Kumar can become a rallying point for the opposition at the national level, Aiyar discounted the possibility on the ground that he did not have a presence outside Bihar.

Obviously, Mani Shankar Aiyar did not have in mind the past example of Vishwanath Pratap Singh when the latter became a rallying point for anti-Congress forces in the late 1980s and cobbled up a coalition which was supported by the Left and the BJP at the same time.

V.P. Singh too had very little political presence outside Uttar Pradesh. It may be a strange coincidence that Nitish Kumar whose political star started rising at that time now holds out the same possi-

bility. Certainly it is not prudent at this stage to jump to a specific conclusion but that possibility would always remain.

The Samajwadi Party will certainly remain an enigma. Mulayam Singh Yadav must now be ruing his decision to walk out of the JD-Uled alliance in Bihar. His so-called third front has not been able to cut any ice in the Bihar polls. Besides, he is senior to Nitish Kumar in age.

But Mulayam Singh is a pragmatic man. Moreover the Communist Party of India-Marxist has very good influence over him and it is not inconceivable that the Left might step in while prevailing upon the Samajwadi Party to have at least some sort of understanding at the national level.

The factor that can go in favor of Nitish Kumar is his suave personality. He enjoys good equations with Navin Patnaik and Jayalalithaa, the chief ministers of Odisha and Tamil Nadu. As a railway minister, Nitish Kumar had a tiff with the mercurial Mamata Banerjee when he truncated the Eastern Railway to create a new division.

ven more than the crushing defeat which the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered in Delhi, its setback in Bihar will hurt it a great deal more not only because of Bihar’s greater importance as an electoral arena but also because of the huge emphasis which the party had placed on the contest.

Perhaps to avert the demoralizing effect of a second successive defeat in an assembly poll, the BJP used all its supposed assets to register a victory with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing nearly 40 rallies, which is likely to remain a record of its kind in the foreseeable future, and deputing as many as 14 cabinet ministers to campaign in the state even if, so far as political importance is concerned, they are mostly nonentities.

Party president Amit Shah may

be an exception in this context but he apparently shot the party in the foot by saying that a victory for the ‘mahagathbandhan’ or the Grand Alliance of the Janata Dal-United, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress will be celebrated in

Pakistan. This puerile attempt to depict the anti-BJP alliance’s supporters -- Muslims -- as anti-nationalist evidently backfired. Just as Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s suggestion about a review of the quota

policy was effectively used by the alliance to portray the BJP as intrinsically pro-upper caste who have never liked the policy of reservations.

Not to be left behind, Modi himself added fuel to the fire by snidely suggesting that the alliance, if it won, would take away some of the quotas meant for the backward castes to give them away to the Muslims.

But it may not be these petty games alone which let down the BJP. There are two other factors which undoubtedly cut the ground from under the party’s feet.

One is the murderous activity of the Hindu Right ranging from the killing of rationalists to the lynching of suspected beef-eaters, which have persuaded the artistes of various professions to return their awards in protest against the prevailing climate of intolerance.

The other is the overweening arrogance of the BJP leaders, which was demonstrated by Subramanian Swamy’s advice to the government to sack the Reserve Bank governor Raghuram Rajan for echoing the grievances of the writers - who have done “nothing for the country”.

Few would have expected, even after the Delhi defeat, that Modi’s “magic” would start fading so soon.

In retrospect, his mistakes seem obvious. He might have had a chance if he hadn’t tried to ride two horses at the same time – allowing the RSS to plant its men in various institutions (and failing to rein in the saffron militants) while claiming that he is solely for inclusive development and extolling the country’s diversity even as some of his ministers, like Mahesh Sharma, say the opposite.

Modi let himself down after a great beginning.

2-year jail for doctor for selling drugs to addicts

BY A STAFF WRITER FFINGHAM, IL -- A South AsianAmerican doctor from Effingham, Illinois, has been sentenced to two years in prison for selling controlled substances illegally.

Dr Naeem Mahmood Kohli, 61, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $10,500 in fines as well as $700 in special assessments, to be followed by three years of supervised release after getting out of prison.

Kohli was also ordered to forfeit his office building located at 500 North Maple, in Effingham, as well as $34,419.72, as a result of his drug convictions, a release from the US Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced in a press release last week.

“The evidence heard by the jury and judge in this case established that Dr. Kohli abandoned his role as a medical professional for a price,” US Attorney Stephen Wigginton is quoted as saying in the press release.

“In a community, and a nation, where medical doctors are held up as the trusted gatekeepers, Kohli, for a price, sold the keys to the pharmacy to patients with drug addictions.”

Kohli, who operated the Kohli Neurology and Sleep Center, was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in March of 2014 and went to trial in US District Court in Benton, Illinois, January this year. After a 17-day jury trial, Kohli was found guilty on seven counts of illegally dispensing Schedule II Controlled Substances to patients who suffered from drug addiction.

BY A STAFF WRITER RAND RAPIDS. MI -- An Indian American nurse has filed a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit against her former employer after she was fired for taking a break due to nausea.

Saijal ‘Sara’ Shah, who worked at The Lodge at Maple Creek, a skilled nursing home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, claims she was punished for taking breaks to recover from nausea during a exhausting shifts, and is consequently suing Maple Creek and Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, which manages the facility.

Attorney Stephen Muhich, representing Lutheran Social Services and Maple Creek, has called for the federal lawsuit to be

dismissed, according to the MLive Media Group. He also adamantly denied all allegations that Shah was treated unfairly based on her pregnancy or her race.

Shah said she was disciplined after she left work to recover from nausea during a double shift even though the former director of nursing told her she “acted reasonably,” her attorney, Sarah Riley Howard, said in the lawsuit filed in US District Court in Grand Rapids.

On March 15, after working an eight-hour shift with another impending, Shah vomitted and could not work, her attorney said. She told another nurse she had to go home, take medication, and try to return to work.

She was absent from work from 5:49 p.m. to 7:02 p.m. She said she left a

number for her supervisor to call but was disciplined for failing to leave a way to contact her and failing to clock out, the lawsuit said.

Shah was fired after she took a break on April 3 in the family break room while working the overnight shift. She claimed she had a slight fever and needed a 15-minute break, and sat in the family break room so that she could hear if others needed her.

A social worker showed up at 4:13 a.m. and accused her of sleeping, which she denied. The lawsuit also alleges Shah was singled out because she is of Indian descent. White workers “were not singled out or penalized, falsely accused of sleeping on the job or targeted as plaintiff was,” claims the official filing.
