One of his die-hard fans said: “If Rajinikanth sir becomes a politician, he will be the best.” Another fan said: “Thalaiva should announce his own party and clean up Tamil Nadu. He is the only one who can save Tamil Nadu and take it forward again.” The 66-year-old star described his brief stint in politics two decades ago as a “political accident”. In 1996, during the Tamil Nadu assembly election campaign, Rajinikanth denounced J. Jayalalithaa and her politics. His strong

remarks contributed to her defeat. “I did a mistake by supporting a political alliance 21 years ago. It was a political accident. Since then, politicians have misused my name on several occasions. But I have to clarify, I’m not joining any party,” he added. Nevertheless, his hint at a political role for himself was lapped up by Tamil Nadu BJP unit chief Tamilisai Soundararajan, who said the Bharatiya Janata Party would welcome any leader who is clean and wants to clean up politics and corruption in public life. Back in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also called on the actor at his residence.

‘Drop Flynn investigation’

According to sources, the request was documented in a memo written by Comey that quoted Trump as saying: “I hope you can let this go” IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump had asked former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey to end the probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s ties with the Russian ambassador here, the media reported this week. According to sources, the request was documented in a memo written by Comey that quoted Trump as saying: “I hope you can let this go.” The White House has however rejected the new allegations. According to a White House official, a “conversation of that nature” did not happen. “While the President has repeatedly expressed his view that Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, he has never asked Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any probe involving Flynn,” the official said in a White House statement. “The President has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Comey.” The revelation escalated the already raging political crises engulfing the White House triggered by the FBI’s probe into alleged cooperation between

Trump aides and Moscow, and reports that the President shared classified information to top Russian officials, CNN reported. The stunning new developments triggered immediate claims from Democrats that Trump was guilty of obstructing justice and extreme concern from the President’s Republican allies on Capitol Hill. Adam Schiff, the highest ranked Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said this intervention by Trump, if correct,

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

amounted to “interference or obstruction of the investigation”, the BBC reported. Senator John MCain reportedly said that the Trump scandals had now reached “Watergate size”. Trump on May 9 fired Comey, who led the FBI investigation into the ties between Russian officials and Trump’s presidential campaign, an issue that Congress also addresses. Flynn has been at the centre of that investigation shortly after Trump’s arrival to the White

House. Flynn advised Trump on foreign policy during the campaign and was later appointed NSA, a position he was forced to resign after lying about his contacts with the Russian Ambassador in Washington. Sources said that Comey was so appalled by the request at an Oval Office meeting on February 14 that he wanted to document it to share his recollections of the encounter with senior FBI officials. The report has put a new complexion on Trump’s firing of Comey, a move he later confided to NBC News was motivated by anger over the Russia probe. A source said the encounter between Comey and Trump unfolded after the then FBI Director was in the Oval Office briefing Trump along with Vice President Mike Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. After the briefing, Trump “asked Sessions and Pence to leave”, the source told CNN. According to Comey’s memo, the President said: “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.” The President told Comey that Flynn, who was fired for lying to Pence about the content of his telephone conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak before the inauguration, hadn’t done anything wrong.

Ex-FBI director to lead Russia probe WASHINGTON: The Justice Department has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the federal probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, the media reported. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller on Wednesday to the position, reports CNN. Attorney General Jeff Sessions previously recused himself from any involvement in the Russia investigation which includes evidence of potential collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign associates and Russian officials, due to his role as a prominent campaign adviser and surrogate. Mueller was appointed Federal Bureau of Investigation Director by former President George W. Bush in 2001 and served until 2013. He will resign from his private law firm WilmerHale to avoid any conflicts of interest, the Justice Department said. As special counsel, Mueller is “authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation of these matters”, according to the Justice Department order Rosenstein signed. In a brief statement, Mueller said, “I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability”, CNN reported. News of the special counsel announcement was closely held. The White House received a heads-up less than an hour before the news broke. —IANS

S.Korea, US agree to denuclearize Pyongyang US President Trump willing to ‘make peace’ with North Korea SEOUL: US President Donald Trump is looking forward to working closely with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in and is willing to make peace with North Korea through engagement if the conditions are right, according to a top Seoul envoy. Trump made the remarks this week during a 15-minute meeting with special envoy Hong Seok-hyun in Washington,Yonhap News Agency reported. “(President Trump) talked about sanctions on North Korea and cooperative relations with China. And he said he looks forward to cooperating closely with President Moon in resolving the North Korean nuclear issue so as to produce an outcome,” Hong said. “Though we’re now at the stage

of pressure and sanctions, he said he has a willingness to make peace through the so-called engagement if certain conditions are right. He said what he’s willing to do is not talk for talk’s sake but for talks that produce an outcome,” the envoy said. Also in attendance at the meeting were Vice President Mike Pence, National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster and Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner. Hong said he handed Moon’s letter to Trump and expressed thanks for supporting South Korea’s security and inviting the South Korean leader to visit Washington next month. The two countries agreed earlier this week to hold a summit between Moon and Trump in Washington in late June.

S

outh Korea and the US this week agreed to work towards the “complete” denuclearization of North Korea, also vowing to seek new and practical ways to rid Pyongyang of its nuclear weapons, Seoul officials said. The agreement came at a meeting between South Korean officials and US National Security Council (NSC) officials, Yonhap News Agency reported. “The US reaffirmed its strong commitment to the security and defense of South Korea,” Yoon Young-chan, the top press secretary of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, told the media. The sides agreed to exert joint efforts for a “complete” disposal of North Korea’s nuclear weapons, he added. “First, they agreed that their ultimate goal was the complete disposal of North Korean nuclear weapons. Second, they agreed to

mobilize all available means, including sanctions and dialogue,” Yoon said. The sides said dialogue with the communist North was possible under the right conditions, Yoon said. North Korea launched what is believed to be an intermediaterange missile on Sunday, prompt-

ing fresh condemnation from both Seoul and Washington, as well as the UN Security Council. This week’s meeting also sought to arrange schedules for a summit between Moon and his US counterpart Donald Trump. Yoon said the sides have agreed to hold the summit in Washington in late June.

if Pakistan will stay Jadhav’s execution as ordered by the court, Moazzam Ahmad Khan initially did not reply. He then said that the ruling was “basic”. He did not comment on the merits of the case. “This is a very basic judgment. What the court has done is that it has given a ruling on provisional

measures,” Khan told reporters. “It did not say anything on the merit of maintainability of the order,” he said. India had sought the court’s intervention for an immediate suspension of Jadhav’s death sentence, fearing that the Indian national may be executed even before the ICJ decided the case.

court had earlier written to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to see that Jadhav was not executed. Officials of both the countries were present when the judge asked the registrar to read out the order to both the parties. In a public hearing on Monday,

India sought the court’s intervention to annul the death sentence given by a Pakistan military court to Jadhav who Islamabad says was arrested in Balochistan on charges of spying, sabotage and terrorism. India has maintained that he was abducted from Iran and taken to

nvironment Minister Anil Dave, a committed environmentalist who had worked on green projects including conservation of the Narmada river, died here on Thursday morning following cardiac arrest. He was 61 and was a bachelor. Meena Agarwal, the wife of Dave’s family physician Bharat Agarwal, told IANS that his family tried to wake him up in the morning but he appeared unconscious. He was rushed to the AIIMS at 9

a.m. “in a stage of cardiac arrest”, a hospital statement said. “All possible measures were taken immediately at AIIMS, but he could not survive and (was) declared dead around 9.45 a.m.,” the AIIMS statement said. Dave hailed from Madhya Pradesh where he had done a stint as Minister of Environment. He was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers on July 6, 2016 as Minister of State for Environment with independent charge. He had worked on conservation projects including of the Narmada

India accused Pakistan of violating the Vienna Convention by denying consular access to Jadhav and pronouncing him guilty of espionage in a “farcical trial”. President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning the loss of Dave whom he had met only on Wednesday evening. They expressed shock over the sudden death. “Absolutely shocked by the sudden demise of my friend and a very respected colleague, Daveji. My condolences,” Modi said in a condolence message. The Prime Minister said Dave would be remembered as a “devoted public servant who “was tremendously passionate towards conserving the environment”. “This demise is a personal loss,” Modi said. The government announced national mourning and “as a mark of respect”, the National Flag will fly at half-mast across the country.

Is Kashmir Modi’s biggest failure? The low polling percentage in Srinagar by-election was a disturbing sign of the erosion of faith in the electoral process AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

here is little doubt that notwithstanding any achievement of Narendra Modi in the economic field or in partially curbing the saffron hotheads, Kashmir will be the scene of his biggest failure unless he is able to accomplish a dramatic breakthrough in the near future. Such a feat will justify Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s belief that only Modi can solve the state’s problems. At the moment, however, an expectation of this nature appears

unreal because militancy in the Valley has become a great deal more intense than before, making the situation “scary”, as the Election Commission has been told by the state government in the context of the Anantnag parliamentary by-election, which had to be cancelled. The ridiculously low polling percentage of seven in last month’s Srinagar parliamentary by-election was a disturbing sign of the erosion of popular faith in the electoral process since 2014, when the percentage in the assembly polls was 66, a 10 per cent jump from 2008. While some hope was generated

by the fairly large turnout by young men during an army recruitment drive, the cold-blooded killing of a 22-year-old Kashmiri army lieutenant during a wedding celebration in his family underlined the presence of psychopathic militants nearly all over the state and their increasing boldness.

What is more, the appearance of schoolgirls on the streets to join the teenage boys to throw stones at the security forces shows that the familial and social norms are breaking down. The link between the increase in militancy and last year’s killing by the security forces of Burhan Wani,

the so-called poster boy of the local terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, has long been obvious. Hindsight suggests that if Wani had been captured and jailed, there would not have been such a rapid deterioration of the situation. If a hardline official approach has accentuated the sense of alienation, the reason is the association of such an attitude with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s generally hawkish outlook, which has manifested itself in other parts of the country in the murderous antics of the gau rakshaks (cow vigilantes) despite Modi’s earlier admonition, the saffron lobby’s continuing opposition to inter-faith affairs and the description of Mughal emperors like Babur and Akbar as “invaders”, as by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently recalling the castigation of Muslims as unpatriotic “Babur ki aulad” (children of Babur) during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. None of this is expected to make the Kashmiri Muslims pay greater heed to the Prime Minister’s call to shun terrorism to boost tourism as he said during his last visit to the state. The scene has been exacerbated by the appearance of jingoistic television channels as well as by belligerent trolls in the social media which echo the kind of virulent rhetoric which was common at the height of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement with the exception that their targets now include, along with the minorities, the Leftists and Liberals — the supposedly anti-Hindu, anti-national “sickular Congis” and commies — and the more restrained print and audiovisual media.

Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake goes dry In just under six decades, the area under the water of the scenic lake, which has Kasauli Hills and the lower Himalayas in the backdrop, has shrunk by nearly 57 per cent JAIDEEP SARIN, CHANDIGARH

arge patches of dry bed, more than 50 per cent of the water body showing its dirty and smelly underbelly of weeds, boating limited to a small area and marine and bird-life affected — Chandigarh’s landmark Sukhna Lake is no more the picturesque water body that used to attract thousands of people every day. In just under six decades, the area under water of the scenic lake, which has the Kasauli Hills and lower Himalayas in the backdrop, has shrunk by nearly 57 per cent. While going dry is not entirely a new phenomenon for the rivulet and rain-fed Sukhna Lake, this year is particularly bad as the lake started drying up quite early in the summer. With monsoon rains over the region not likely to arrive for the next 45-50 days, Sukhna Lake could be headed for one of its

With monsoon rains not likely to arrive for the next 45-50 days, Sukhna Lake could witness one of its worst dry periods.

worst dry periods. With an average depth of eight feet and a maximum of 16 feet, Sukhna Lake is barely managing to stay afloat in some parts. The water depth in some areas, where boating is still being allowed in a restricted area, is just about two-three feet.

Built in 1958, the Sukhna Lake was spread over an area of three square km. In 2016, the area of the lake under water was reduced to a mere 1.3 square km. With rainfall over the region not being as high in recent years as earlier, the seasonal rivulets have not

been able to maintain the supply of water to the lake. The construction of over 200 check dams in the Sukhna choe (rivulet) and other rivulets, which feed the lake from the catchment areas of neighboring Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, in the past over four decades, has also

meant that the lake gets lesser water from upstream. “The check dams were constructed to stop silt from coming to the lake. But it stopped the water flow too,” Yogesh Kumar, a retired engineer, who has been coming to the lake since the 1970s, told IANS. The lake complex, which attracts hundreds of visitors, tourists, regular morning and evening walkers, fitness freaks and even lovelorn couples, presents a picture of neglect as far as the water body is concerned. Last year, the water level of the lake was not even close to its maximum water storage capacity of 1,167 feet. Even at the end of the monsoon season, the water level stood at only 1,154 feet. It is down to about 1,151 feet now. Such is the state of affairs that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had to intervene last year and direct the Chandigarh Administration to list immediate steps to save the lake.

Independent counsel must probe US-Russia link: Bharara Indian-American prosecutor has called for the appointment of an independent counsel to lead the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election IANS, NEW YORK

I

ndian-American prosecutor Preet Bharara who was fired by President Donald Trump’s administration in March, has called for the appointment of an independent counsel to lead the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, the media reported. Former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Bharara in an op-ed published evening in the Washington Post said the move would be of “common sense”, especially in the wake of former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey’s dismissal last week. Comey was heading the FBI’s probe into Russia’s links with Trump’s presidential election. “Jim (James) Comey was once my boss and remains my friend. I know that many people are mad at him. He has at different times become a cause for people’s frustration and anger on both sides of the aisle. Some of those people may have a point...I am proud to know a man who had the courage to say no to a President,” Bharara wrote. “And in the tumult of this time, many should be asking, Are there still public servants who are prepared to say no to the President?” he pondered.

Bharara said a special prosecutor must be “independent and uncompromised” and that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing the Russia probe because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from it,

must appoint one. “Given the manner of Comey’s firing and the pretextual reasons proffered for it, there is no other way,” he wrote. While early explanations from White House aides detailed how it

was Rosenstein’s recommendation that persuaded Trump to fire Comey, the President himself said in an interview with NBC News that he had made up his mind to fire the FBI director before meeting with his deputy attorney general. Trump also said that the Russia investigation was on his mind as he made the decision to dismiss Comey, escalating alarm in some circles that the president had sought to impede the bureau’s probe. Bharara in his op-ed piece said Rosenstein, who he labelled “a respected career prosecutor”, nonetheless bears a special responsibility to appoint a special prosecutor given his role in Comey’s firing. Rosenstein has “mostly deserved the doubts he generated” by seemingly aiding Trump in dismissing the FBI director, Bharara wrote, and as such, bringing in a special prosecutor “would not only ensure the independence of the investigation, but also provide evidence of Rosenstein’s own independence.” “A special prosecutor alone is not sufficient...It must be supplemented by a truly bipartisan investigation in Congress as well as a replacement FBI director who is apolitical and sensitive to the lawenforcement mission.” “History will judge this moment,” Bharara concluded, adding “It’s not too late to get it right, and justice demands it.”

Italian court’s ban on Sikhs carrying kirpans

ROME: The Italian Supreme Court has ruled against a Sikh migrant who wanted to carry a kirpan in public. The court said migrants who choose to live in Italy must respect Italian laws prohibiting the carrying of weapons even though Sikhs regard kirpan as sacred. The court, while acknowledging that diversity in a multi-ethnic society is important, ruled that “public safety from weapons was of paramount importance and superseded an individual’s rights”, BBC reported.

PIO researcher Mehta links ‘WannaCrypt’ to N.Korea IANS, LONDON/WASHINGTON

A

s the world struggles to identify the cybercriminals behind the global ransowmware attack that hit 150 countries over the weekend, Neel Mehta, an Indian-origin security researcher working with Google, has claimed on Twitter that the hackers may have links to North Korea. According to Mehta’s discovery, the “Lazarus Group” that works on behalf of North Koreans may be behind the attack as the hacking group has, in the past, used the same coding and tools as were used in “WannaCrypt” — the software used in the current hacking into the Microsoft operating software,

the BBC reported. Mehta, a University of British Columbia graduate who earlier worked with IBM Internet Security Systems, posted “codes” on Twitter, potentially pointing at a connection between the “WannaCrypt” ransomware attacks and the malware attributed to the infamous “Lazarus Group”, responsible for a series of devastating attacks against government organizations, media and financial institutions. “Our researchers analysed this information, identified and confirmed clear code similarities between the malware sample highlighted by the Google researcher and the malware samples used by the ‘Lazarus Group’ in 2015 attacks,” Altaf Halde, Managing

Director of Kaspersky Lab (South Asia), told IANS. “Neel Mehta’s discovery is the most significant clue to date regarding the origins of WannaCrypt,” Kaspersky Lab added. In 2014, Mehta uncovered the “Heartbleed” security bug that left millions of websites, online stores and social networks with a major security hole in place, exposing user information and financial information to hackers. “Lazarus Group”, that according to Mehta is based in China, was responsible for a major hack on Sony Pictures in 2014 and another on a Bangladeshi bank in 2016. Kaspersky Lab, however, noted that a lot more information was needed about earlier versions of “WannaCrypt” before any firm con-

clusion could be reached.“We believe it’s important that other researchers around the world investigate these similarities and attempt to discover more facts about the origin of ‘WannaCrypt’,” the cyber security company added. Though North Korea has never admitted any involvement in the Sony Pictures hack, security researchers and the US government

are confident in the theory and neither can rule out the possibility of a false flag.“Although this similarity alone doesn’t allow proof of a strong connection between the ‘WannaCrypt’ ransomware and the ‘Lazarus Group’, it can potentially lead to new ones which would shed light on the ‘WannaCrypt’ origin which to the moment remains a mystery,” Halde noted.

Ransomware attack: Could Microsoft have stopped it? The vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows software — exploited by WannaCrypt — affected more than 200,000 users across 150 countries

World now faces cryptocurrency attack SAN FRANCISCO/NEW DELHI: After facing a massive “WannaCrypt” ransomware attack that exploited a vulnerability in a Microsoft software and hit 150 countries, the same Windows vulnerability (MS17-010) has also been exploited to spread another type of malware that is quietly but fast generating digital cash from machines it has infected. According to a report in The Registrar on Wednesday, tens of thousands of computers globally have been affected by the “Adylkuzz attack” that target machines, let them operate and only slows those down to generate digital cash or “Monero” cryptocurrency in the background. “Monero” — being popularized by North Korea-linked hackers — is an open-source cryptocurrency created in April 2014 that focuses on privacy, decentralization and scalability.

laming Microsoft for not providing free custom support to its customers who were using old Windows software that may have slowed down “WannaCrypt” attack, a media report has said the tech giant charged a fortune for the custom support for older versions, including Windows XP that was discontinued in 2014. According to a report in Financial Times on Thursday, issuing a free custom support would have protected the computers from the ransomware attack. “But users of older software, such as Windows XP, have to pay hefty fees for so-called ‘custom’ support. The cost went from $200 per device in 2014, when regular support for XP ended, to $400 the following year. It jumped to $1,000 after that,” the report said. While Microsoft offered deals for government agencies during the first year after the support for Windows XP was over, it charged the customers, including Britain’s

Half of France’s new ministers are women PARIS: France’s newly inaugurated President Emmanuel Macron (in picture) has unveiled his cabinet, with women filling half of the 22 positions, media reports said. Unveiling his cabinet on Wednesday, Macron designated Gerard Collomb as the Interior Minister, former presidential hopeful François Bayrou for Justice and Jean-Yves Le Drian - who was Defense Minister under former President François Hollande - as the Foreign Affairs and Europe Minister, CNN reported. Sylvie Goulard takes defense, Muriel Penicaud becomes Labour Minister and Agnes Buzyn is Health Minister. Annick Girardin, who was the Minister for Public Services under Hollande, is now the Overseas Territories Minister. Bruno Le Maire, who served under former center-right President Nicolas Sarkozy, has been named as Macron’s Economy Minister, Nicolas Hulot, a well-known environmentalist, becomes Ecology Minister, the media reports added. The US Treasury Department on Wednesday announced new sanctions on Iranian defense officials, an Iranian entity and a China-based network that supplied missileapplicable items to a key Iranian defense entity, Efe news reported. The sanctioned US companies and individuals are accused of “direct or indirect cooperation with the Zionist regime in committing crimes against humanity in Palestine”.

National Health Service (NHS), for the custom support. NHS, however, abandoned the custom support for unknown reasons in 2015 which exposed it to last week’s ransomeware attack. Microsoft, however, immediately issued a “free” patch for old software, including Windows XP, on Friday midnight when the ransomware attack began spreading. According to the report, “the high price highlights the quandary the world’s biggest software com-

pany faces as it tries to force customers to move to newer and more secure software, while at the same time earning a profit from the army of engineers it employs on security issues”. The vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows software — exploited by “WannaCrypt” — affected more than 200,000 users across 150 countries, with hackers demanding hundreds of dollars from the users for them to regain control over their data.

KABUL: Armed assailants on Wednesday stormed the compound of National Radio Television in Afghanistan (RTA) in the eastern city of Jalalabad, triggering heavy fighting is underway. According to a Tolo News report, the attack started at 10 a.m. (local time) on Wednesday morning. Eyewitnesses said one attacker detonated explosives to enable the other assailants to gain access into the compound. An RTA employee said that at least 40 people work in the compound and many managed to escape but some are still trapped inside.

Public broadcaster NHK reported on Tuesday Princess Mako’s engagement with her university classmate Kei Komuro will become official with an exchange of ceremonial gifts, after which a date will be set for the wedding. Mako is likely to marry Komuro in 2018, the report said. The couple met five years ago during an event at a restaurant in Tokyo, NHK reported. Komuro proposed to the 25-yearold princess about a year after they met and Mako’s parents have already approved of the relationship. Mako is the elder daughter of Prince Akishino, the second son of the emperor and second in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne after Prince Naruhito. Mako’s marriage will further shrink Japan’s imperial family, an aged and dwindling institution, which is heading towards a huge generational gap, Efe news reported. The marriage could also reopen the debate on the law that has been governing the royal household since 1947, and that doesn’t recognize the so-called collateral institutional branches, making women who marry out of royalty to lose their royal status. The world’s oldest reigning hereditary dynasty comprises 19 members, of whom only four are men, making them the only ones who can accede to the throne: Emperor Akihito (83), Prince Naruhito (57), Prince Akishino (51) and Prince Hisahito (10), younger brother of Princess Mako.

While CBI raided in New Delhi, Chennai, Gurugram and Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu, Income Tax raids were held at 22 locations in Delhi-NCR said to be owned by Lalu IANS, NEW DELHI/CHENNAI/PATNA

T

he premises of two top opposition leaders, P. Chidambaram and Lalu Prasad, were this week raided by CBI and IT officials with Karti Chidambaram accused of getting pay-offs for helping a media company get FIPB clearance, while the former Bihar Chief Minister was accused of “benami” land deals — actions the opposition denounced as vendetta by the BJPled central government. The day began with raids by the Central Bureau of Investigation in New Delhi, Chennai, Gurugram and Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu, while the Income Tax raided 22 locations in Delhi and Gurugram on a number of premises said to be owned by Lalu and kin. The CBI raided the residence of Chidambaram and his son Karti in Nungambakam in Chennai, after registering an FIR on May 15 in which it was alleged that his son could have benefited to the tune of Rs 3.5 crore for helping in the clearance of an FIPB proposal of media company INX Ltd when his father was at the helm in the North Block. The CBI FIR alleged that invoices for approximately Rs 3.5 crore were raised by the INX Ltd in favor of companies in which Karti was having “sustainable interests” either

directly or indirectly. The FIPB clearance was given to Mumbai-based INX Media (now called 9X Media) when it was run by Peter and Indrani Mukherjea, and Chidambaram was then the Finance Minister. The FIR does not mention the name of Chidambaram, though it states that he had cleared the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval for Rs 4.62 crore Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the FIPB meeting on May 18, 2007. Both Chidambaram and his son denied there was any misconduct on their part and said the whole

INA cadet’s death in Kerala under scrutiny KANNUR (KERALA): The death of a 26-year-old cadet at the Indian Naval Academy in Kerala’s Ezhimala near here has caused raised eyebrows, with the family alleging “foul play”. The INA in a press release issued here said G. Sooraj, a first term cadet, was found in an unconscious and unresponsive state on the floor of the academic wing by a duty sailor instructor at 5.30 p.m.. Sooraj was immediately rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the Indian Naval Hospital Navjivani and administered intravenous fluid for resuscitation. He was later shifted to Pariyaram Medical College and Hospital along with a medical specialist and medical assistants, the statement said. “The cadet developed two episodes of cardiac arrest at the hospital. All efforts to revive the cadet by the medical specialist failed and he was declared dead at 2.30 a.m.,” the statement added.

The Academy said Sooraj’s family was informed about the incident. It also added that an inquiry has been ordered by the Southern Naval Command. However, Sooraj’s family has alleged that relation between Sooraj and the INA officials was not good, the Payanur Police said. The family has alleged that Sooraj’s death “did not occur under normal circumstances”, the police said. The police have begun a probe into the entire episode. Sooraj started off his career in the Indian Navy as a sailor in 2010. In 2013, he appeared for the officers’ test and joined the INA. From then on there was constant friction between Sooraj and the INA officials. In 2015, he was terminated by the INA, following which he approached the Armed Forces Tribunal which asked the INA to rein—IANS state him.

action was aimed at “muzzling” the voice of Chidambaram senior, who has been writing against the NDA government. Karti said he had committed no crime and the case against him was foisted on account of political vendetta. Chidambaram said FIPB clearance is given in hundreds of cases and there is no allegation against officials, who are members of the FIPB, or against him. Besides Karti, those named in the FIR include INX Director Indrani Mukherjea and her husband Peter Mukherjea, both accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, and some

NEW DELHI: The CBI did not rule out the arrest of Karti Chidambaram against whom an FIR has been lodged in a case of FIPB approval for a media company in connection with which his residence and offices were raided. “These are speculations. All the steps required as per law would be decided in course of time. We have set the process of law in motion through this FIR,” CBI Joint Director Vineet Vinayak told media in reply to questions whether Karti would be arrested. He said all relevant details regarding the FIPB approval in the INX media company given by the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram allegedly at the behest of his son Karti would be looked into during investigation. “We are in the initial stage of investigation. As the evidence comes forth, we will definitely exam-

We will come back before you with all details in due course of time after we scrutinize the documents, he said, adding searches were still on in the office of Chess Management Service Private Limited of which Karti is the chief promoter. “All people whose involvement has come forth will be examined in due course of time,” Vinayak said. Giving details of the case that led to registration of the FIR, the CBI official said INX media moved an application in the month of March 2007 to bring 46.2 per cent of foreign issued equity, which amounted to Rs 4.6 core from three entities which were based in Mauritius.

supremo, the IT raids were also carried out on the premises of party MP P.C. Gupta’s residence as well as several businessmen and real estate agents in Delhi and Haryana’s Gurugram and Rewari. The raids started around 3 a.m. on May 16, in which over 100 officials were involved.

His strong

Nadal in third round

The 30-year-old is set to play the next round in the Rome Masters against the winner of the duel between Jack Sock and Jiri Vesely

Andy Murray was eliminated after losing 6-2, 6-4 to Fabio Fognini in a second round match. The Scotsman and current world No. 1 took the title here last year

without losing a set, but has yet to return to top form after coming back from an elbow injury. Italy’s Fognini, who is ranked 29th in the world, was the clear favorite among the crowd at the Campo Centrale. The 29-year-old underdog broke Murray’s serve early and jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the way to winning the first set 6-2. The 30-year-old Murray trailed 1-4 in the second set before breaking Fognini’s serve and battling back to 4-5, but the Italian hung on to win the set and the match. Meanwhile, Spanish tennis star David Ferrer defeated compatriot Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to become the 13th player in ATP World Tour history to reach the milestone 700 match wins.

“I was very curious to discover the country and its people. It gives me immense joy to confer this honor,” Puyol told the media after handing over the tickets to the 80year-old. Puyol was the star Central defender of the Spain team that

defeateda Holland 1-0 in the final of the 2010 World Cup. “I am every happy to be here in India. Its a great occasion. I hope to be here in India in September when the U-17 World Cup gets under way,” the former Barcelona star said.

The 30-year-old Nadal is set to play the next round against the winner of the duel between American Jack Sock and Czech Jiri Vesely. Kolkata wins rain-interrupted game in IPL BENGALURU: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir led from the front to knock defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a seven-wicket win and made to Qualifier 2 in a rain-interrupted eliminator clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here. Chasing 48 to win in six overs after rain and wet outfield ate up a large chunk of playing time, forcing Duckworth-Lewis method to come into play, Gambhir steadied the ship after KKR were 12/3 at one stage with an unbeaten 19-ball 32. Yusuf Pathan, promoted up the order to score at a brisk pace, lasted just one delivery before he was run out. Robin Uthappa did not last long too, holing out to Shikhar Dhawan at deep mid wicket off Chris Jordan’s bowling. Earlier, KKR rode on a superlative show by their bowlers to restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad to 128/7 in 20 overs. None of the Hyderabad batsmen could score a half century, with skipper David Warner managing only 37 off 35 balls as the highest score of the innings. Nathan Coulter-Nile was the pick of the bowlers while Umesh Yadav continued his good show as the two-time IPL champions made the most of the slow Chinnaswamy wicket to keep Warner and company in check. With Shah Rukh Khan in attendance, the men in purple did well to put a lid on rival’s run flow. The winner of the match between KKR and Mumbai to be played soon will play in final with Pune Supergiants who already qualified after beating Mumbai earlier this week. —IANS

‘Simran’ writer upset over Kangana claim IANS, MUMBAI

N

ational Award-winning film editor and screenwriter Apurva Asrani is unhappy with actress Kangana Ranaut for apparently claiming that she has co-written the script of the upcoming film Simran. Besides starring in the Hansal Mehta directorial, Kangana Ranaut has been credited as “additional dialogue and story” writer in the film’s poster.

Apurva Asrani

In a lengthy post on Facebook, Asrani said it was “demeaning for any writer’s name to be pushed

after an additional writing credit”. He said he was not offended by the credits, rather feels “betrayed” by Kangana. “Ranaut has been claiming in several interviews that Hansal Mehta, the director of ‘Simran’, approached her with just a one line screenplay of the film. She says the story was dark and gritty thriller at that stage and that she herself developed it into a light, fun film,” award-winning film editor and screen-writer Apurva Asrani said.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A new malware scam is targeting consumers with airline emails, just in time for the summer travel booking season. Waves of spam emails have been sent masquerading as Delta Airlines receipts. In reality, they contain malicious software that can steal personal information from computers, according to information security researchers and Lake County prosecutors. The fake confirmation emails make it look like someone has just booked a ticket using the address to which it is sent. “However, no transaction actually took place,” said Lake County State’s Attorney Scott Turk. “The email is designed to scare you into thinking someone bought an airplane ticket using your identity.” This can trigger a panic in recipients of the emails. If they happen to click too hastily on the email’s internally embedded links, they will then be redirected to compromised websites containing Microsoft Word documents infected with Hancitor malware. “Hancitor is a versatile malware frequently used in phishing attacks that specializes initially infecting a PC, and then acting as a bridge for further malware downloads,” Turk said, in a warning to consumers. Heimdal Security, who discovered the scam last month, said the emails have a few clear signs they’re fake, including illegitimate email addresses and a lack of flight information.

LIVE, LOVE, CELEBRATE By Zofeen Maqsood

NAMASTE CHICAGO.. AN INDIAN SUMMER IN CHICAGO

T

o spike up summer mornings, every Saturday, a group of men and women gathers at one of the highest possible levels above the ground, in the city of Chicago, to practice Surya Namaskar and meditation. Almost at one with the clouds, the orderly crowd practices yogic techniques on the 94th floor of the 360 Chicago Observation Deck -one of the most frequented tourist spots in the city. As part of the observatory’s 360 Sky Series – a recent initiative where a selection of new activities have been introduced for the year at the landmark location, people can register themselves to take part in a one hour long yoga class. The instructor led class teaches both the beginners as well as the advanced level yoga lovers various ancient Indian techniques such as yogic breathing exercises and meditation to awaken the senses. While Yoga, a group of physical and mental exercises leaning heavily on spirituality that originated in ancient India is a thriving industry in America. Interestingly, now Vedic healing, ancient meditation and Ayurveda tenets are also gaining a mainstream attention. According to a 2016 study titled, Yoga in America, conducted by Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance, there are more than 36 million yoga practitioners in the country and the annual yoga expenditure is around $16 billion. The industry has been seeing an upswing in both the following as well as understanding of the philosophy behind yoga. Many experts suggests that yoga with its popularity often acts as gateway for many Americans as well as other communities to explore other Indian age-old practices and beliefs. According to studies, yoga practitioners are more likely to meditate or be careful about choosing organic, vegan or even sattvik food. As a gentle nod to our age-old cultural values and its efficacy in modern day lives, the upcoming summer months in Chicago pack in a lot of interesting activities that are based on Indian principles of well-being. Beginning July, at the Chicago Botanic Garden at Glencoe, there are a host of activities that may make an Indian grandmother happy. There is an Ayurveda 101 class that will teach about the health and healing system associated with yoga. The summer months would also include meditation walks, mindfulness programs, sunrise yoga and even yoga retreats amongst many other activities. But as yoga and associated practices gain center stage in American life, amusingly many Indian youngsters are ignoring the practices and instead going for fad diets and extreme exercises in search of instant results. Jill Wener, a physician and Vedic meditation teacher who conducts Vedic healing classes at Life Force Art Center in Belmont, Chicago says, “Perhaps for many Indians things like yoga or meditation are things that they grew up seeing and often it happens when you know something about your culture or tradition you tend to take it for granted and learn something new instead.” However, Ms Wener informs

Indians in Chicago have another reason to feel proud of their ancient cultural and traditional practices as a host of activities around town for the summer months are centered on Yoga, meditation and Vedic healing.

that she has herself taught many Indians meditation and healing practices.

NOT JUST A FAD On why yoga and ayurvedic healing may not be the go-to guidebook for many young Indian Americans is also because it is a sustained program that requires patience and perseverance. It is not one of those fast paced, entertaining dance workouts that guarantee instant results. Especially meditation and healing requires a sustained understanding and is actually a holistic lifestyle. Christina Gutierrez who teaches Ayurvedic nutrition at Hamsa Ayurveda Lifestyle Center in Chicago agrees. She says, “While we get almost all nationalities from Europeans to Latin Americans and Indians but for the most part, Americans are the ones who form the majority.” Another ironical fact remains that in Chicago, just as in most of America a majority of yoga teachers are also Americans. Ms Gutierrez says, “one would believe that teaching yoga may come more readily to Indians as this is something that’s their system but from what I see, there are only a few Indian yoga instructors.” She reasons, “It could be because for American youngsters it may be more interesting to try out a new healing method they have not earlier practiced but for Indians it may not be as exotic. Another reason could be that Indians may not want to practice yoga in a slightly westernized format. However that being said, we have had very receptive clients across cultures.” Living a yoga inspired lifestyle and

the benefits arising from it may take time to discover it but those who have walked the path have enlightening stories to share. Jill Wener, was a successful physician who practiced internal medicine at the reputed Rush University Medical Center in Chicago for ten year before she travelled all the way to Rishikesh in India to learn Vedic philosophies, Sanskrit chanting and the puja ceremony. Sharing her journey Ms Wener says, “I studied Western medicine but was reaching a burn out point realizing that all our treatments were based on testing and proving methods. I attended a mindfulness program at a spa in Arizona where a simple exercise showed me the power of intuition. We were taken to a group of horses where we were asked to get the horse to lift their hoof up. I realized the intuitive ability with which you connect with the animal gets a better response than verbal communication. It was revealing to see that the way I approached the horse, the speed the intention I had was reflected in the animals’ behavior. I realized that there is an alternate healing method that I must discover and this led me to Rishikesh in India where I learnt the philosophy behind intuitive healing.

THE CHICAGO CULTURE While yoga is a pan American trend but Chicago has taken up to the practice in a very zealous way. Yoga studios running over the count of 500 are dotted all across the city with regular yoga retreats happening in

the suburbs. There are websites and journals dedicated to yoga enthusiasts and experts believe that Chicago with its many ethnicities and diversity is a fertile ground for not just yoga but other alternate disciplines too. Christina Gutierrez says, “While yoga has spread its wings I would say Ayurvedic eating is beginning to get recognized in the mainstream. The seeds are sown and Chicagoans with their love for exploring newer cultures should be taking to it more strongly in the years to come. Also traditionally in America more women than men took to yoga for both fitness and meditative purposes the trend may be seeing an increase amongst men too. Ashley Christensen, yoga instructor at 360 Chicago Observation Desk says, “There has been a large variety of students - from college students to moms who are visiting their children in Chicago; some weeks there are more men than women too. There have been some Indians too in the diverse population of students.” According to Jill Wener meditative calming practices are particularly important in a city like Chicago. She says, “Chicago is a wonderful city but the extreme weather conditions make lives a little more difficult. People brave bitter winter for many months and practicing healing recharges the energies.” Ms Gutierrezz adds, “Also Chicago has all the four seasons. Ayurveda nutrition teaches you how to prep your body for extreme cold and extreme hot weather. Besides it being a big city it brings along the stresses and strains of modern lives. Holistic healing can do a great deal for people in Chicago and also of course the world over. This apart the scenic beauty of Chicago makes practicing yoga whether it is outdoors or indoors an experience in itself. Ms Christensen, who gets the people to practice yoga at one of the most surreal settings in the city says, “Urban dwellers are constantly on the move. This one-hour class a week allows students to really take some lovely time to themselves to soak in the gorgeous views, meditate, relax, and move their bodies. It’s really the best way to start the weekend.”

The highlight of the evening was the blessings showered from heaven above! A special helicopter was arranged to shower flowers on the tall Hanuman statue that stands upright at the Temple Entrance. Hundreds of devotees gathered outside as the red chopper descended close above the statue and started to shower rose petals on one and all. The plane made four circles around, showering loads of flowers.

The incident had been reported by Prabhu’s 20-year-old son. “When officers arrived at the home on Laura Valle Lane they saw an adult man deceased in the front doorway suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Officers then went into the house and found the two victims and the dead suspect, Garcia said. Indians in the US have been the targets of a string of attacks in the past few months.

Men! Sleep early to have healthier, fitter sperm LONDON: For men wanting to become a father, going to bed before midnight may be key to healthier and fitter sperm, a study has showed. The study showed that those falling asleep between 8 and 10 p.m., had the best sperm motility, meaning the sperm are better swimmers and have a greater chance of fertilizing an egg. On the other hand, men who went to bed after midnight had lower sperm counts and their sperm died much sooner too. Sleeping for six hours or less made this even worse, as did lying in bed for more than nine hours. Late bedtimes and inadequate rest are harmful because they increase levels of antisperm anti-

Interventions such as seat-belt laws to comprehensive sexuality education can help countries to improve the health and well-being of their adolescents and dramatically cut unnecessary deaths, the report recommended.

WASHINGTON: Researchers have found that regular exercise may help decrease risk of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, characterized by progressive neurodegeneration that results in memory loss, compromised physical ability and loss of independence. In a study, published in the journal BMC Public Health, the team of researchers also confirmed that regular physical activity may improve the performance of daily activities for people afflicted with Alzheimer’s. “As there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, there is an urgent need for interventions to reduce the risk of developing it and to help manage the symptoms,” said Kathleen Martin Ginis from University of British Columbia’s Okanagan in Canada.

C

hildren suffering from chronic physical illness may be at increased risk of having depression and anxiety in adulthood, suggests new research. “Our results show that childhood chronic physical illness was significantly associated with adult depression in the total sample of more than 45,000 participants we studied,” said senior researcher on the project Darya Gaysina from the University of Sussex in Britain. For the study, the researchers systematically reviewed evidence from a large number of medical studies, looking for associations between

eight chronic physical illnesses in childhood, such as arthritis, asthma and cancer, and emotional problems experienced by the sufferers in later life. The paper, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry (JCPP), revealed that the sufferers of all chronic conditions reviewed were at increased risk of developing depression or anxiety, emotional problems that persisted beyond childhood and adolescence and into adult life. “Cancer was significantly associated with adult depression,” Gaysina said.

P

regnant women should not expose themselves to temperatures averaging 24 degrees Celsius or above, as they would run the risk of developing gestational diabetes, researchers said. In comparison, women who remained in colder climates with temperatures averaging minus 10 degrees or colder, stood less chances of developing the disease, a study has found. The results of the study that tried to find out outdoor temperature exposure on pregnant women showed women in warmer climates had 7.7 per cent higher risk of

developing gestational diabetes as compared to a 4.6 per cent risk of those staying in colder climates.

Further, for every 10 degrees Celsius increase in temperature, there was a six to nine per cent relative increase in the risk, showed the finding which is based on the theory of how brown fat in humans becomes active in cold climate to generate heat and metabolism throughout our bodies. “Many would think that in warmer temperatures, women are outside and more active, which would help limit the weight gain in pregnancy that predisposes a woman to gestational diabetes,” said lead author Gillian Booth, a researcher at the St Michael Hospital in Ontario, Canada.

—IANS

he first Indian woman to scale Mount Everest four times, Anshu Jamsenpa, will attempt a double ascent to climb the world’s highest peak for a fifth time, her husband Tsering Wange said. The Arunachal Pradesh mountaineer scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to conquer the 8,848 feet Mount Everest for a fourth time. “Anshu is very keen for the double ascent. We have already paid for her fifth permit to climb the Everest and the paper formalities have also been completed,” Wange told IANS.

“She (Anshu) is likely to reach the Everest Base Camp today (May 17) or tomorrow (May 18) and the expedition team will take a decision for her double ascent. Nonetheless, we are elated with

She is the first Indian woman to conquer the 8,848 feet Mount Everest for a fourth time Anshu’s achievement. It is a historic moment for Arunachal Pradesh and India,” he said. Wange, who also heads Arunachal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association, said

the camp officials, who communicated with Anshu during the expedition, informed him that his wife was “fit and fine” and “keen for the double ascent”. Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu this week congratulated Jamsenpa for unfurling the Indian flag at the world’s highest peak for the fourth time. “You made us proud once again Anshu Jamsenpa by unfurling the tricolor for the fourth time atop the world’s highest peak. My heartiest congratulations to our proud daughter of Arunachal. I wish you all success in your future endeavour and may you keep making our nation proud,” Khandu said in a message.
