PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar tried to hold back his smile when a legislator called him a “parallel prime minister” in the Goa assembly on July 22. Speaking on the first day of the month-long assembly session, independent MLA Rohan Khaunte said Parrikar, known for his proximity to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is as good as a “parallel prime minister”. “We all know honorable chief minister’s position in Delhi. He is as good as a parallel prime minister,” Khaunte said. A smiling Parrikar jokingly suggested the legislator had flipped around his initials “MP” the wrong way.

said: “We have written x a letter to the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) board to cancel the recognition it granted to Vibgyor High School, in which a minor student was allegedly sexually assaulted by two of its staff members.” The commissioner also issued a show-cause notice to the school why no objection certificate (NOC) issued to it by the state government should not be withdrawn in light of the horrific crime. In yet another heinous incident, a three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a juvenile in a village 30 km from here while her parents were away from home, police said. The incident occurred late on July 18 when the 16-year-old accused sexually assaulted the child, taking advantage of her parents’ absence from home at Thatteguppe village,” said a police official.

her letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, text of which was released here on July 22. Disagreeing with the idea of installing buoys on the India-Sri Lanka international maritime boundary line (IMBL), Jayalalithaa refered to a suit pending in the Supreme Court against the transfer of Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka said the state government does not consider the maritime boundary as a settled issue. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and secure the release of Indian fishermen and their fishing boats from Sri Lankan custody. In a letter to Modi Jayalalithaa said: “I request your immediate intervention to secure the release of the 43 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu and their 55 fishing boats, including the 46 mechanized fishing boats.”

‘California death penalty unconstitutional’ President Obama extends support to Morocco plan

IANS, WASHINGTON

A

United States federal judge has declared the death penalty in the state of California as unconstitutional. “The dysfunctional administration of California’s death penalty system has resulted, and will continue to result, in an inordinate and unpredictable period of delay preceding their actual execution,” U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney said, according to EFE. According to the Carney, delays have created a “system in which arbitrary factors, rather than legitimate ones like the nature of the crime or the date of the death sentence, determine whether an individual will actually be executed.” Of the more than 900 people sentenced to death in California since 1978, only 13 have been executed, Carney said. With this ruling, the judge overturned the death penalty against Ernest Dewayne Jones, who was convicted April 7, 1995, of the 1992 rape

WASHINGTON: United States President Barack Obama has extended support to Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara in line with the policy adopted by the last three United States administrations.

and murder of a 50-year-old accountant. “Allowing this system to continue to threaten Mr. Jones with the slight possibility of death, almost a generation after he was first sentenced, violated the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment,” Carney said. The ruling comes after another judge in California determined that the system of lethal injections

needs to be revised because there exists a substantial risk that an inmate will experience extreme pain during the injection. Lethal injection has been the object of heavy criticism in recent months after the complications that occurred during the execution of a prisoner who died of a heart attack more than 40 minutes after receiving the supposedly almost instantly fatal injection.

This “explicit support” is a recognition by Washington of Morocco’s King Mohammed VI’s regional leadership and stabilizing force in Africa, according to Peter Pham, director of the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council. It is also a recognition, at its real value, of the constructive role played by Morocco in order to reach a final solution to this “artificial conflict”, Pham told Maghreb Arab Press (MAP). The Sahara conflict broke out after the self-proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic by the Polisario Front of the Sahrawi people in 1976. The expert on African affairs also noted that this support went beyond the Sahara issue to include a strong partnership between Washington and Rabat in order to establish a triangular cooperation in Africa, mainly in the sectors of security and development. — IANS

day after former Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol slapped a `1 billion defamation notice against a popular news magazine, the publication on July 22 released a video of a sting operation that showed a ‘tantrik’ was employed to obtain clues about the killers of renowned rationalist Narendra Dabholkar. The sting video by Outlook magazine also lays hollow the claims by Pol that he had never met reporter Ashish Khaitan

or the ‘tantrik’ — retired police officer Manish Thakur. The magazine had run a story in its July 14 issue alleging that Pune police had requisitioned the services of the ‘tantrik’ to summon Dabholkar’s soul and get clues on his mystery killers. Dabholkar was shot dead on August 20 last year. Even after more than 11 months having elapsed since he was gunned down during his morning walk, police have failed to solve the killing, and handed over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Alleging that the magazine article was defamatory, the 2012 President’s Medal winner Pol shot off a `1 billion defamation notice to Outlook editor Krishna Prasad and reporter Khaitan. Pol’s lawyer Harshad Nimbalkar said his client (Pol) had already denied the contentions in the magazine article which were “per se defamatory, false, frivolous and intended for cheap publicity” that lowered the public standing of the retired police officer. He also announced plans to file a separate criminal case against Khaitan.

In it, the Hindutva icon had given an outline of what the minorities can expect in India. “The foreign races in Hindusthan,” the RSS guru had written, “must either adopt the Hindu culture and language, must learn to respect and hold in reverence Hindu religion, must entertain no ideas but those of glorification of the Hindu race and culture ... or may stay in the country, wholly subordinated to the Hindu nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, far less any preferential treatment, not even citizen’s rights.” Seventy-five years later, Singhal’s statement shows that little has changed so far as the saffron worldview is concerned. In an interview to the Hindustan Times, he has said that the “Muslims will be treated as common citizens — nothing more, nothing less. And they must learn to respect Hindu

sentiments. If they keep opposing Hindus, how long can they survive?” Unlike Golwalkar, the VHP leader is willing to concede citizen’s rights to Muslims, but the precondition of respecting Hindu sentiments remains. He has also issued an unambiguous threat by linking the “survival” of the Muslims to the need to defer to the Hindus. Singhal has imposed a caveat as well. It is that the Muslims must forsake their claims on the Ayodhya, Varanasi and Mathura mosques and accept a uniform civil code. By reviving the demand for the Varanasi and Mathura shrines along with that of Ayodhya, Singhal has recalled the slogan which was raised by the saffron cadres after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya: “Yeh to pehli jhanki hai, Kashi, Mathura baki hai.” (This is only the first instalment; Kashi and Mathura will be next). Following a carrot-and-stick policy, the VHP leader has promised to give the Muslims “love” — another change from Golwalkar — and pledged not to claim any other mosque (for demolition) even though there are thousands built on the “ruins of temples” which were destroyed in medieval times.

In the interview, Singhal has given the saffron brotherhood’s interpretation of Narendra Modi’s success. It was based, according to him, essentially on the “undercurrents” of the Ram temple and Godhra issues over which development and governance acted as a veneer. The next step is to do “what we want to do” though by “constitutional means”. If these observations are read together with Singhal’s earlier hope that only Modi can prevent the “total Islamization” of India, then it will be obvious that while the people in general are expecting an economic revival, the saffron lobby wants the implementation of its Hindu agenda. Evidently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will have to undertake a careful balancing act in order to reconcile the two — if it wants to. Perhaps, it will start with a few sops to the fundamentalists by, say, initiating moves to introduce the uniform civil code and hold a wide-ranging discussion on Article 370 of the constitution which confers special status on Kashmir. Only the BJP knows whether they are paper tigers or have real teeth. Outsiders have little clue although their capability to set off riots is not unknown.

‘Indian Muslims must stand up to radical ideologies’ RAJAQUE RAHMAN, DELHI

S

piritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has urged the likes of Syed Imam Bukhari and Zakir Naik to go to Iraq and preach peace to ISIS. Sri Sri is not only prodding them to take the responsibility of mitigating the sufferings in Iraq but also underlining that their brand of Islam runs the risk of encouraging ISIS-type of fanaticism in India. What’s happening in Iraq and Syria is not a conventional ShiaSunni conflict. It is a case of motivated groups of wrongly indoctrinated fighters going out of control and playing havoc. They are killing Sunnis, Sufis, Shias and Christians. Their call for Caliphate is just a camouflage to spread Wahhabism in areas traditionally dominated by spiritually-

oriented liberal Muslim sects. Tragically, rogue groups patronized by the Wahhabis rule thousands of square miles in this area today. And that’s scary. Following an orthodox form of Islam that insists on a literal interpretation of the Quran, the Wahhabis believe that all those who don’t subscribe to their brand of Islam are to be hated, persecuted, even executed. And from Algeria to Afghanistan to Iraq, they have done that religiously. Osama bin Laden to Mullah Omar to now Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, all are propagators of this school of thought. The root of hatred is systematically nurtured in the madrassas of Saudi Arabia and exported all over the globe. The religious curriculum in Saudi Arabia teaches children as young as 13 that in Allah’s eyes, people are of just two

What Islam needs today is not a movement towards orthodoxy, but a dynamic interpretation of its tenets.

types. Wahhabis, the blessed ones, and the rest. What Islam needs today is not a movement towards orthodoxy, but a dynamic interpretation of its tenets. There can be no debate or compromise about its core creed. But its interpretation and application should change from time to time. When it’s frozen at a certain period, it becomes outdated and loses its charm and appeal. And

that is the biggest tragedy of the ummah today. The deviant behaviors are so rampant to make radical groups believe that a revivalist agenda and strict policing are the only way. This distorted rigidity is what has kept the Arab world backward and is also making Muslims in India vulnerable. The rising influence of the Tablighi Jamaat, effectively the flag bearers of Wahhabism in the Indian subcontinent,

is a worrying factor. Liberal Indian Muslims must stand up to join this national jehad of saving the nation from the clutches of orthodoxy! Condemning Osama bin Laden is not enough. We need to fight the mindset that gave birth to bin Laden. Let’s take it upon ourselves the task of ensuring that this radical ideology is not taught and preached in any form in India.

‘Issue infrastructure bonds for NRIs’ NEW DELHI: The US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), a forum of the Indian American community in the U.S., has urged the Narendra Modi government to issue infrastructure bonds for the NRI community. Suggesting that these bonds be named “Vibrant India Bonds” in order to leverage the brand awareness of “vibrant India”, the USINPAC said the bonds will help India tap the goodwill of the global Indian diaspora. A press release said USINPAC chairman Sanjay Puri said India will need about $1.5 trillion over the next five years to finance its infrastructure needs. “Since infrastructure projects are generally structured in a debt equity ratio of 70:30, it implies that India would need over $1 trillion of debt funding over the next five years. This is the right time to tap the intangible goodwill of the Indian diaspora by issuing these bonds specially targeted at the diaspora,” he said. The release said the USINPAC was working with members of the US Congress to build momentum for an

It said that over 40 Congressmen have already signed a letter requesting the U.S. speaker, and over 20 Senators have already written or verbally informed the speaker of their wish to hear an address by Modi. The release said the USINPAC was also preparing ground for two other events during Modi’s visit — a luncheon with U.S. Senators and an interaction with chief executive officers of America’s top private equity funds and IT and manufacturing corporations. — IANS

CEO convicted for paying kickbacks NEW YORK: An Indian-American CEO of two publicly-traded companies has been convicted for paying kickbacks in return for purchases of his companies’ stocks, a media report said. Shailesh Shah, 48, of California

pleaded guilty before a US district judge to two counts of mail fraud and two counts of wire fraud on July 21, The Boston Globe reported. Shah will be sentenced in October and could face up to 20 years in prison for each count and a $250,000 fine. Shah was the president and CEO of SOHM and Costas, both based out of California. He was accused of paying kickbacks to an investment fund representative in exchange for buying stock in the two companies. The fund representative was, in fact, an undercover FBI agent working on an investigation into fraud in the market for penny stocks, the report said. Penny stocks are less heavily regulated than stocks that trade on major exchanges such as the Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exchange.— IANS

Scarlett Johansson and Lupita Nyong’o were also in talks for Disney’s take on Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale. “Casting is the most important element of any film, and finding the right kid to play Mowgli was imperative,” Favreau was quoted as saying. “Neel has tremendous talent and charisma. There is a lot riding on his little shoulders and I’m confident he can handle it,” Favreau added.

srael’s large-scale offensive continues to wreak havoc on the Gaza Strip, killing 23 Palestinians and wounding around 230 others Wednesday and pushing the toll in the coastal enclave to over 650. Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman of the health ministry in Gaza, told reporters that 23 Palestinians were killed, 17 of whom were from the town of Khuza’a in the southeastern city of Khan Younis, Xinhua reported. Residents and security officials said that Israeli army tanks, stationed east of the small town that is close to the border separating Gaza from Israel, carried out massive attacks on the houses there. The residents said they appealed to international and local rescue teams to aid them, adding that ambulances were still unable to reach the area to carry out the dead

Kangana Ranaut finds paparazzi intimidating NEW DELHI: Actress Kangana Ranaut, who was away from the limelight to pursue her filmmaking course in New York, is back with a bang. However, she finds the paparazzi “intimidating” and is still adjusting to all the attention. As she walked the ramp for designer Anju Modi at the recent Couture Week, she tripped but took it sportingly. She mesmerized the audience with her beautiful smile and looked true diva in Modi’s creation. “I am just back from New York. It was like going back to school. This is my first public outing after coming back from New York. So I took it in a very easy way but it was not. Coming back to paparazzi was intimidating. I couldn’t believe I was back here,” she said after the show. The Queen fame actress, who was wearing a heavily embroidered black lehanga-choli, said she was an avid supporter of Indian wear. “It’s not that I don’t support Indian creation. In fact, I wore a lot of AM:PM (a designer label) during the promotion of Queen. They wanted me to wear Indian clothes,” she told IANS. “However, it’s sad that we are getting lot westernised, the way parties are held, the way we dress up, everything has got westernised. If I go to a party wearing an Indian dress like this, I don’t know how the media would react,” she added. Kangana has created a niche for herself with films like Fashion and Queen and has garnered appreciation for her out-of-the-box choices.

Experiments important for actors: Emraan Hashmi MUMBAI: Actor Emraan Hashmi’s last two experimental films Ek Thi Daayan and Ghanchakkar didn’t go down well with his fans. However, he does not regret doing them. He feels as an actor it is necessary to move away from one’s comfort level. “For any actor, doing experiments is important. I don’t regret the films I have done. If I had it my way, I would still do Ek Thi Daayan and would do a Ghanchakkar, the 35-year-old said during the trailer launch of his upcoming film Raja Natwarlal, where he will be seen as a conman. “It is very important to divert from what you are doing just to stretch your creative skills and when you come back to your traditional path — the path you are known for — then you bring a new color to your performance and characters,” he added. Emraan, who is known for romantic and masala entertainers, chose to go experimental with films like Ek Thi Daayan and Ghanchakkar, that neither struck the right chords among the audiences nor set the cash registers ringing at the box office. However, he says he is back to the genre he is known for with Raja Natwarlal and dedicates the film to his fans. “I think my fans are also bit angry with me as in the last year I have done quite a lot of experiments on screen. So this film is, kind of, dedicated to them,” said the actor who has earlier featured in films like Jannat, Jannat 2 and The Dirty Picture. “It is (like coming back to the basics. It is the Emraan Hashmi they missed over the past year,” he added. Produced by UTV Motion Pictures and directed by Kunal Deshmukh, Raja Natwarlal also features Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon and Pakistani model-actress Humaima Malick. It will hit the theatres on August 29.

I’m a huge Shahid Kapoor fan: Alia Bhatt MUMBAI: Alia Bhatt, who has confirmed she has signed Vikas Bahl’s Shaandar for a role with Shahid Kapoor, says she’s a fan of the actor, whom she first fell in love with when she was all of 11. “I’m a huge Shahid Kapoor fan. I must have been 11 years old when I went to see Shahid in Ishq Vishk at GaietyGalaxy (in Mumbai). I’ve been a fan since then. He is a fabulous actor and from what I hear, a very supportive co-star,” Alia said. Shahid is a generation removed from most of the co-stars Alia has worked with so far. Gently, she corrects that by saying: “You forget I’ve done Highway with Randeep Hooda. But yes, that apart, I’ve so far worked with actors my own age. So there was a natural comfort level with them. But it’s not like Shahid is any different from Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor or Sidharth Malhotra. He is a very chilled-out guy. He has been around for so many years. I am sure he’s a thorough professional. And I am really looking forward to working with him.” The actress, who was recently seen in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, admits there is plenty on the plate. “I’m very excited. I loved his (Vikas Bahl’s) ‘Queen’. And I am really looking forward to what he does in the film with me,” said the Highway actor.

Katrina has worked extremely hard: Jacqueline MUMBAI: Actress Jacqueline Fernandez, who is busy promoting her much-awaited film Kick has praised her co-star Salman Khan’s former ladylove Katrina Kaif for working hard to be where she’s today. “I feel even if you are doing good work, you still have to work harder...I am sure Katrina is someone who has worked extremely hard and that’s the reason she is one of the leading actresses today,” Jacqueline said. The actress is open to do special dance numbers in films. “If I was asked to do special appearance, I don’t mind. Our movies are considerd to be part of song and dance culture, so if I get an opportunity to perform on a song in a movie, I think it’s nice. I love dancing and music,” said the Sri Lankan beauty.

Complete insanity: Sunny Shraddha to show Leone on career high muscular body MUMBAI: Actor Sunny Leone is juggling between different Bollywood films, dance numbers in the southern movie world and brushing up her Hindi skills. On a career high, the Indo-Canadian talent says she’s here to stay. In an interview, she has spoken about her new projects and about her journey in the Hindi film industry. To a question on the sudden surge of activity, the former porn-star said, “It’s complete insanity, everything that is happening. I am so unbelievably happy about everything that is going on. Happy to be working and happy people are showing so much support.” About her role in the Pritish Nandy production, the actor said her fans would see her in a never seen before avatar. About her next release Tina and Lolo, Sunny said she and her co-star Karishma Tanna shared a nice bonding.

MUMBAI: Actor Shraddha Kapoor, who will be seen in Remo D’Souza’s ABCD 2, says she is working hard to get a muscular body for the film. “I have been working very hard for this film. I have been asked to get a muscular body for ABCD 2 as it’s the demand of the script. So lately, I’ve been on a strict diet and developing muscles,” Shraddha told IANS. To be directed by Remo, ABCD 2 is a sequel to AnyBody Can Dance and it will feature Varun Dhawan with Shraddha in the lead. Meanwhile, the actress also says she is nervous about matching steps with Varun.

‘Pizza’: a fear fest with yummy twist Film: “Pizza”; Actors: Akshay Oberoi, Parvathy Omanakuttan, Dipannita Sharma, Arunoday Singh; Director: Akshay Akkineni; Rating: ***1/2

W

hat the devil! Here’s the deal. Normally in films about paranormal experiences, the terror comes from outside. But what if the fear factor is turned on its head? What if the pizza delivery boy, known to be occasionally and potentially dangerous, gets spooked while making a home delivery? It’s an audacious, potentially delectable premise for a horror film. And debutant director Akshay Akkineni delivers. When you gotta go, you gotta go...right? When the devil within summons the poor pizza boy for a bit of footsie in an abandoned bungalow, you know it’s time to get seriously concerned about the health of your spirit. First-time director Akshay Akkineni (his celebrated editor-dad Sreekar Prasad adroitly edits the footage) gives us a horror film that’s also funny and flighty. There’s a comic crust to the cheesy base. That’s a rarity indeed. If you’ve seen the Tamil original, then you know what you’re in for. Pizza is a pacy perky ode to new-

age terror where traditional horror elements such as a woman possessed by an evil force is combined with the theme of the effect of metropolitan quirks such as mindless materialism and commitment phobia, on the mind of the upwardly mobile class. The film has some genuinely scary moments once the pizza boy

(Akshay Oberoi, sincere) gets locked inside the house with ghouls on the prowl. There are insane twists in the terror tale that add up finally to a fairly convincing too-clever-for-its-own-good theme. Though nothing spectacularly shocking happens during the film’s running time, there are enough turns and twists in the tale to keep us alert and involved from behind our 3D glasses. That brings me to the singular unimportance of being threedimensional in our movies. I’m never able to figure out why our films make a spectacle of themselves. Dude, 3D is distracting. However, the chill quotient in Pizza works better with objects flying into your face and bloody hands lunging from nowhere to grab our pizza boy by the throat. But it’s not only such shock shots that make Pizza engaging. It’s that crisp spicy topping of humor where we see our hero being trapped into a house of horrors that his pregnant wife would probably have written about in one of her stories. Yup, Pizza delivers.

CONGRESS WILL BE BACK WITH A BANG, SAY LEADERS BY A STAFF WRITER

A

t a gala event of Congress supporters on July 19 held by the Punjab Chapter of the INOC(I) USA, the visiting Congress leader Satvir Singh Pallijhikki of Punjab noted that some disenchanted Congress deserters were now beginning to return ‘home’ having lost their faith in the ruling BJP party even in a short span of time. Some claim incompetence and inexperience while others are not comfortable with the trials and tribulations and the feeling of insecurity. When asked why they did not join other parties, he said their belief was that they were no better. Pallijhikki also emphasized on the strength of NRIs which he believes, can be unleashed to make a tremendous difference. In a show of unity and cooperation, the large gathering of Punjabis converged at the Shahi Darbar Restaurant in Floral Park New York to hear first-hand on issues pertaining to trends recently developing in Punjab and to make an assessment of how and what action needed be taken to address them. Drug addiction, unemployment, and rising costs of living continue to trouble many against the promises of the ruling party. General Secretary Harbachan Singh, who was the Master of Ceremonies, opened the event with the thunderous rendition of the national anthems of both the US and India being played under the shadow of large flags of the two countries forming the backdrop of the grand stage. Speaker after speaker at the jampacked hall expressed satisfaction and praise for the work of INOC(I) and wished it better luck for the future. Chairman George Abraham exhorted those who had gathered there to remain steadfast in their commitment for a pluralist India that is committed to an inclusive agenda. He further said that the diaspora had a great responsibility to be an earnest watchdog as the Congress

party would sit in the opposition in the next few years. He thanked the guest of honor for his commitment to the party and his contributions in the past several years. He welcomed Phuman Singh ji to the gathering and urged for further unity and purpose among its rank. President Juned Qazi asked the gathering not to lose heart because of the loss in the last Lok Sabha elections but to come together to build the party in the US that would have a vital role to play in the years ahead. Senior Vice-President Mohinder Singh Gilzian expressed his gratitude to the chief guest for his presence and expressed full confidence of the return of the Congress Party to power in Punjab in the next election. He praised Satvir Singh for the great work he had done in Punjab. T.J. Gill, president of the Punjab chapter, urged the gathering to engage in concrete actions to help alleviate poverty and help those in India who were struggling for basic necessities rather than engage in

empty rhetoric. Before the guest speaker took the rostrum, Qazi invited the chief guest and placed a shawl of honor upon Mr. Satvir Singh Pallijhikki and spouses of INOC officials ( Mrs. Abraham, Mrs. Gill, Mrs. Gilzian, Mrs. Swaran Singh and Mrs. Sabina Ali ) presented him bouquets of flowers. Also Harbachan Singh presented the chief guest and T. J. Gill with citation awards for their respective outstanding services issued at the behest of Karamjit Singh Dhaliwal by New York State Assemblyman Mike Miller who regretted for being unable to make it to the occasion. Members of the Raja Sahib Sports Club of Nawanshahr also presented a plaque to honor Satvir Singh Pallijhikki. Others who spoke included Zach Thomas, Karamjit Dhaliwal, Phuman Singh, Sawaran Singh, Harry Singh Bolla, Surat Singh Padda, Balwinder Singh Bajwa, Gurmit Singh, Attorney Anand Ahuja, Dr. Anurita Kapur, Krishna Arora, Harminder

Many skeletons in family mortuary’s cupboard

ORT WORTH (TX) -- Long before the Johnson Family Mortuary in Fort Worth, Texas, made national headlines when the evicting landlord found eight decomposing bodies, the owners of the mortuary business had a checkered past in the industry. The Texas Funeral Service Commission had shut down a prior funeral home operated by twin brothers Dondre and Derrick Johnson in 2010 when the brothers owed more than $13,600 in penalties assessed for violations. In addition, five complaints are pending with the commission against the Johnson Family Mortuary. The brothers’ operating license for the mortuary expires at the end of month. “Unless or until they resolve these pending issues, we will not grant a license to anyone in the Johnson family, anyone representing the Johnson family or anyone connected to the Johnson family,” says Kyle Smith, a staff attorney for the commission. Derrick Johnson said the suit and penalties against D&D Johnson Funeral Home have nothing to do with the Johnson Family Mortuary. “We learn from our mistakes,” said

Singh, Tamil Nadu chapter president John Joseph, Delhi chapter vice-president V. B. Sharma, Dr. V. Chakote of Karnataka Chapter, Kerala chapter president R. Jayachandran and secretary U.A. Naseer. A letter of appointment was also presented to R. Jayachandran and Thomas T. Oommen, newly-appointed president and chairman of the Kerala chapter, respectively. Networking among guests and bonding of friendships prevailed throughout the event and the sense to work together in concert for the betterment of lives of the people both in the US and in India was undoubtedly clear and acknowledged by all. The function concluded with animated Bhangra dance enjoyment and songs by Reshem Singh Reshem who enthralled the audience. Jasbir Singh Nawanshahr thanked everyone and attributed the grand success of the event to the excellent teamwork of INOC(I) and its Punjab chapter president Gill.

$100,000 worth of airport equipment stolen BY A STAFF WRITER

Derrick Johnson. Five of the eight bodies seized earlier this week from the Johnson Family Mortuary have now been identified. All but one showed advanced signs of decomposition, the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office said.

The bodies were removed after the building’s landlord called the police, saying he had evicted the owners but found the unattended bodies inside. None of the bodies—six adults and two stillborn children—showed signs of trauma or foul play.

URORA (MO) — The police in the southwest Missouri are investigating the theft of more than $100,000 in equipment from the Aurora airport. Airport operator Justin Richmond says the thieves made off with equipment such as GPS systems, radios, and transponders from 13 planes. More than 20 planes were broken into on July 16. Richmond says the thieves appeared to be knowledgeable about aircraft because they left behind less-valuable electronics. An aircraft security expert says the thieves might travel the country targeting airports. Tom Zecha, aviator security manager for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, says the theft was well-planned and an unusually large number of items were taken. Richmond says the city is now considering adding security cameras and a front gate at the airport.

Mosque officials’ bid to chop off hand of ‘thief’

Sri Guruvananda Swami said his mission is to awaken people

BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EWARK (NJ) -- Over 3,000 people from all walks of life from the US and 14 other countries, including India, availed the opportunity to get personally blessed by Brahmrishi Sri Guruvanand Swami at the International Guru Poornima 2014 celebrations on July 12 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) here. It was a magical night of bhakti, anand, spirituality and celebration, marked by memorable devotional dance sequences, and climaxing in a powerful, inspirational discourse by Sri Guruvanand Swami, lovingly addressed as ‘Gurudev’ by his countless devotees around the world. In his moving discourse which appealed to the heart and met with a huge applause, Gurudev promised to help pull his devotees out of adversities and to cut their bonds of karma with his spiritual powers and siddhis gained over decades of sadhna. “I have come to awaken you into spirituality lest your life goes waste,” he thundered. He asked of people not big sacrifices but starting with small vows like not losing one’s temper for 24 hours. He also said that he wants to focus on ensuring that Indian tradition and sanskars are kept

Enactment of Hauman Chalisa in dance was unique.

alive in the second generation NRIs. Gurudev also enjoyed and applauded– as did the audience in the packed hall--the superb dance items. Guru Rachna Sarang, who has her own Academy of Performing Arts, mesmerized the audience with a Ganesh Vandana. Her students’ enactment of Hanuman Chalisa in the Kathak style stole everybody’s heart. The grand finale was a Guru Stuti specially composed and dedicated to Gurudev. Apra Bhandari emceed the evening. Ashok Sancheti, US coordinator, thanked the dancers, choreographers and others who contributed in making the event an unalloyed success. Sampat Poddar, international president, gave the welcome address. Prabha Bhandari, who led the team of volunteers, was recognized for her tremendous contribution to the organization and in holding this event. Guru Poornima is the day for paying reverence to one’s teachers and mentors, spiritual or otherwise. This is the day when, his disciples say, Sri Guruvanand’s divine power is at its peak and when his blessing ushers in peace and happiness in devotees’ lives. Though Gurudev has been coming to America since 2008, it was the first time that he graced Guru Poornima here, the first outside India, and blessed a stream of seekers towards the end of the evening even as others

enjoyed a delicious, vegetarian meal. Attendees were thrilled to be part of the Guru Poornima program that literally vibrated with spiritual energy. Indeed, an event of this scale in the ambience of a magnificent auditorium like the NJPAC has never been seen in this part of the world. The organizers of the widelypublicized event held under the aegis of the World Spiritual Awareness Forum are pleased with the response. A small group of them contributed funds for the three-day program that had no commercial trappings whatsoever. The plan is to follow up with a larger set-up to spread Gurudev’s message with a website, especially to engage the youths. On July 11, a Bhakti Sandhya with Gurudev was attended by over 1,000 people, including many from India, Hong Kong, Dubai and Europe. Several people who have contributed to the spread of Gurudev’s programs were recognized that day. A disciple of revered Yogiraj Devraha Baba, Sri Guruvanand Swami is a perfected master (Satguru) who is also a renowned scholar of Hinduism and Jainism with a deep understanding of o ther religions. He teaches people to lead morally uplifting and spiritually fulfilling life, which leads to overcoming karmic debts while fulfilling worldly duties.

l e a d e r a t a We s t Philadelphia mosque has been arrested for allegedly trying to chop off the hand of a male member accused of stealing money from prayer jars. Merv Mitchell, 37, was arrested on the night of July 17 when the police executed a search warrant at Masjid Ar-Razaqq Ul-Karim in the 1100 block of North 63d Street, said Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives. The attack happened after a prayer service three days ago with Mitchell, also known as Mabul Shoatz, accusing the 46-year-old mosque member of the theft. The accused immediately denied it, but to no avail. Mitchell and the mosque’s imam carried the accused down a flight of stairs to the backyard of the mosque, a converted house, where Mitchell also lives, Walker said. They put the victim’s wrist on a log, and Mitchell “swung at his wrist, cut through his skin, and cut his tendons, but didn’t make it all the way” because the blade was dull, Walker said. The victim was treated at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital and will require reconstructive surgery. Mitchell was charged with a g g r a va t e d a s s a u l t , c r i m i n a l conspiracy, and related offenses. The police found the 2-foot-long machete during the search. Walker said the police would obtain an arrest warrant for the 35-year-old imam.

Indian professor wins award for diabetes research BY A STAFF WRITER

Endocrine Society, which took place during June 21-24 in Chicago. Kuhadiya’s research, presented at ICE/ENDO on June 22, was the first randomized, double-blinded, placebocontrolled clinical trial. It showed that adding liraglutide to insulin in Type 1 diabetics resulted in significant improvements in glucose control, including reductions in the hemoglobin A1C (the average blood sugar measurement over 90 days), total insulin dose, blood pressure, body weight, carbohydrate intake and C-reactive protein. Results of the study, which involved 54 patients taking liraglutide and 18 taking placebo, are being submitted to a journal

for publication. Kuhadiya also presented these findings at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology meeting in May in Las Vegas. Kuhadiya, who joined the UB faculty last year, earned his MBBS at the H.M. Patel Center for Medical Care and Research in India, an MPH in epidemiology from Tulane University and an M.D. from Mount Sinai Medical Center in Jersey City, where he was named valedictorian and most outstanding thirdyear resident. Set a target of 319, England were bowled out for 223 runs in their second innings, a little over an hour before tea on the final day as India took a 1-0 lead in the fivematch series. Curiously, England could not get as many as they scored in the first innings (319) to win the match. India riding on a fine century by Ajinkya Rahane (103) had scored 295 in the first innings and

342 in the second innings. The 25-year-old Ishant, who went wicketless in the first innings, used the short-ball well to his advantage as Joe Root (66), Moeen Ali (39), Matt Prior (12), Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad (8) all fell to short-pitched deliveries on the final day. Ishant was adjudged the Man of the Match. Resuming at 105 for four on the fifth morning, England had a daunting challenge at hand to save the Test match. Root and Moeen frustrated the Indian bowlers in the first session but at the stroke of lunch Ishant struck to remove Moeen and tilt the scales in India’s favor. In the post-lunch session, Ishant peppered the England bowlers with short-pitched deliveries and it did the trick for India. Prior found Murali Vijay at deep mid-wicket while attempting a pull in 80th over. With score at 201/8, the writing was on the wall for England and this time India were not ready to let loose the tailenders. Ishant again used the short-ball cleverly — and this time it was Broad, who attempting to trickle it down the leg-side, gloved to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It was like sweet revenge for Jadeja as he ran out James Anderson (2) to finish off a memorable win for India.

Nico Rosberg

HOCKENHEIM: Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg extended his lead in the Formula One drivers’ standings with his first win on home soil while both Force India drivers scored points at the German Grand Prix here on July 20. Nico Hulkenberg kept up his record for finishing every 2014 race in the points, and took seventh for Force India, reports E. The final point went to the second Force India of Sergio Perez, after clashes with Daniil Kvyat’s Toro Rosso and Adrian Sutil’s Sauber. Rosberg, who started in pole position, led from start to finish, covering the 67 laps at the 4,574-meter circuit in 1:33:42.914. The Mercedes driver’s average speed was 195.2 kph (121.29 mph). The 29-year-old finished ahead of Finnish Williams driver Valtteri Bottas, who also came in second two weeks ago at Silverstone, and teammate Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari’s Spanish driver Fernando Alonso came in behind German Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel and ahead of Australian Red Bull team member Daniel Ricciardo. Rosberg, who won his fourth race of the season and seventh career title, now has 190 points in the standings, while Hamilton is second with 176 points. — IANS

fter surviving a near fatal accident, Formula One star Michael Schumacher is now showing signs of revival. A report has revealed that he is now communicating with his family members by fluttering his eyelashes. He met with a near fatal accident while skiing in the French Alps on December 29 last year. The recovery shown by the F1 legend may allow him to go back home soon but he will still require round-the-clock medical care to recover completely, reported the Mirror. Doctors who are treating him in Switzerland hope Schumacher will be able to sit upright in an

advanced electronic wheelchair in a few weeks. After he is discharged from the medical care facility, Schumacher is likely to occupy a new building in his mansion that has been constructed without stairs, keeping his medical condition in view. Schumacher woke up from a medically induced coma last month after sustaining life-threatening injuries when he smashed his head against rocks while skiing.

ndia will be expecting a lion’s share of medals from shooters, boxers, wrestlers and shuttlers at the 2014 Commonwealth Games which started here on July 23 but it would be difficult to match the record medal haul of 101 in the last edition at home. The Indians are riding high on their historic success at the 2012 London Olympics, where they won a record six medals, including two silver. This time around India have a sizeable contingent of 224 athletes and their main medal hopes will be from shooting, boxers, wrestlers, badminton and hockey. In the last two Games, shooters

PV Sindhu

have won the major chunk of medals for India. They won 27 medals including 16 golds in Melbourne and 30 medals, including 14 gold medals in Delhi in 2010. In badminton, with defending champion Saina Nehwal skipping

the event, India will be pinning their hopes on P.V. Sindhu, Parupalli Kashyap and the pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa. In the last couple of years, Indian wrestlers have also become a force to reckon with ever since Sushil Kumar won his second Olympic medal, and Yogeshwar Dutt the bronze in London. The onus is also on the boxers, especially on the male boxers. The saving grace was M.C. Mary Kom’s bronze medal with the introduction of women’s boxing. In the track and field event, the focus will be on Krishna and fellow discus thrower Vikas Gowda. Last but not the least, the men’s hockey team will be looking to salvage some pride after their disappointing show at the World Cup.

Glamour met glitz at ICW 2014 finale Actors Bipasha Basu and Chitrangada Singh spark the ramp in true diva style during the six-day event IANS, NEW DELHI

A

live performance by singer Kamaal Khan on popular Bollywood tracks, décor reflecting the golden period and actors Bipasha Basu and Chitrangada Singh walking the ramp in true diva style, the grand finale by Shree Raj Mahal Jewellers as a part of ‘India Couture Week 2014’ turned out to be a complete Bollywood affair. While Chitrangada started the show in black voluminous Gauri and Nainika gown accessorizing it well with statement neckpiece, Bipasha looked no less than a bride in designer Rohit Bal lehanga and matching jewellery. “Whenever I wear Indian outfit, I make sure of accessorizing it well with jewellery and today I am feeling like a queen. I started my career as a model and it’s great to come back to Delhi again and walk on ramp. It was such a great welcome

that I felt emotional, Bipasha shared after the show. As the actress was looking no less than a bride, it was obvious for her to get bombarded with questions on wedding. Asked that whether she would like to adorn the similar heavy pieces on her wedding day, she said: “I would love to look like a Bengali bride and I don’t mind if I get the chance to wear such beautiful looking pieces. After all, every bride wants to look her best on the most special day of her life.” Chitrangada, on the other hand, took her inspiration from the famous Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe when she walked down the ramp dancing and smiling. The show was mix of jeweleries from the Svara and Sondaraya collection of the title sponsor of the couture week. Pieces inlaid in gold and diamonds embellished

with precious stones such as emeralds, rubies and pearls dominated the range of designs. The Svara collection comprises of gold and polka jewellery embellished in precious stones such as emerald and ruby while Sondaraya was a variable mix of traditional motifs and contemporary styles in diamond jewellery. Also seen walking the ramp was filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar and model-actor Muzammil Ibrahim. One of the high point of the show was live singing by Kamaal Khan. Though it was difficult for people sitting in Main Show Area (MSA) to see him but the voice certainly made of them sing with him.

Married and stressed? Keep your eyes safe in sun Have frequent sex IANS, HELSINKI

M

arried but remain stressed owing to work or family-related issues? Have frequent sex to shun those unnecessary bouts of tension and lead a healthy life. In a first such study on married couple in the Philippines, researchers found that married couples should work more to build intimacy in the marriage. “A healthy sex life equates to better psychological health,” D. Liza Espiritu, a clinic operations manager of the PhilhealthCare Inc., was quoted as saying in media reports.

The study, commissioned by the country’s Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO), revealed that married persons are getting less sex compared to the widowed or separated individuals. Called the first “Wellness Index in the Philippines”, the study involved 1,200 respondents aged 21 to 55 years. It noted how a married person only has sex 2.95 times per week while a widowed and separated individual has it 4.33 and 4.38 times a week, respectively. “Widowed or separated people are already liberated in romantic commitments,” Espiritu added.

LONDON: Everyone knows how to protect skin in the sun but what about eyes? Longer, lazy summer days entice everyone to spend more time outdoors, but whether you are spending the day at the beach or just relaxing in the garden, eyecare is needed in every possible way. Not only does the sun make our eyes more prone to infections and UV-related conditions such as Photokeratitis (a painful eye condition - similar to a sunburn of the cornea - caused by exposure to UV light), it can also do permanent damage as UV rays deeply permeate the eye, causing damage to many structures, reports contactmusic.com. Steve Schallhorn, chief medical director at Optical Express, has shared some tips: * Always read the label: Sunglasses that are dark or tinted may look like they will shade your eyes, but only 100 percent UVprotected sunglasses will prevent your eyes from being exposed to harmful UV rays. Overexposure can lead to eye disease, especially for those with light-colored eyes as they are more sensitive to the rays. So, invest in a pair of polarized sunglasses. The lenses in these help reduce harsh glare from reflective surfaces, enabling you to see better during sunny days and further protecting your eyes. * Get some fresh air: Although we’re quick to turn on the air conditioning to cool us down as the mercury rises, this can lead to a syndrome known as ‘dry eye’ as air conditioning units remove all the moisture from the air. Common symptoms are persistent dryness, scratchiness, red eyes and a burning sensation. Avoid this by getting plenty of fresh air and only having the air conditioning on for short bursts of time. * Blink more often: The eye is surrounded by fluid, which protects it by washing away debris and dust every time we blink. Dry air can carry high levels of microscopic allergens which irritate your eyes. If your eyes feel drier than usual, try blinking a few times and make a habit of doing so more frequently. This will allow more moisture into your eyes. — IANS

n July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the moon. Forty-five years later, NASA celebrated on July 20 the giant leap by honoring Armstrong, who died in 2012, with a renaming ceremony of the historic “operations and checkout building” at Cape Canaveral in Florida, the launch site. Oceans vital for alien life on other planets, says a study LONDON: Oceans have an immense capacity to control climate and they are vital in sustaining life even in case there is any on other planets, says a study. “The number of planets being discovered outside our solar system is rapidly increasing. This research will help answer whether these planets could sustain alien life,” said professor David Stevens from the University of East Anglia in Britain. Until now, computer simulations of habitable climates on Earth-like planets have focused on their atmospheres. But the presence of oceans is vital for optimal climate stability and habitability.

“We found that heat transported by oceans would have a major impact on the temperature distribution across a planet, and would potentially allow a greater area of a planet to be habitable,” Stevens added. Oceans help to make a planet’s climate more stable so factoring them into climate models is vital for knowing whether the planet could develop and sustain life. “This new model will help us to understand what the climates of other planets might be like with more accurate detail than ever before.” The study appeared in the journal Astrobiology. — IANS

X-ray to fix broken earphone IANS, NEW YORK

T

his may sound bizarre but a U.S. doctor has used X-ray machine to fix his broken headphone after “diagnosing” a tiny break in the cords. To find what infected the right earphone, he X-rayed different parts of the cords and found a four-mm tear in the wires, right next to the splitter. Matt Skalski, a radiology resident at Southern California University of Health Sciences, damaged his headphones when shifting office. “Closed fracture of a speaker wire within its rubber/plastic sleeve is a rare headphone injury, usually due to a traction trauma,” Skalski wrote in his report on Radiopae-

Apps to monitor your financial health

Sniffer laser for hardto-detect explosives IANS, WASHINGTON

NEW YORK: You have read about fitness apps offering better health monitoring and overall happiness. But have you ever tried downloading apps that keep your financial health in good shape? The best of these apps let consumers see multiple accounts at once, track spending and balances, and set and monitor saving goals. For example, try “Level Money”. He spliced it out and put it all back together. “The headphones showed 90 percent recovery, with only mild volume loss overall and approximately four cm of cord shortening,” Skalski added in his report. Moreover, the “surgery” cost Skalski just $1 and was over in 30 minutes.

T

here’s bad news for bombsniffing dogs: researchers have found a way to increase the sensitivity of a lightbased sensor to detect incredibly minute amounts of explosives. The tiny laser sensor can even sniff out a hard-to-detect explosive called pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), a favorite among terrorists. Small amounts of PETN pack a powerful punch and being a plastic, it escapes x-

ray machines when not connected to detonators. PETN was found in Richard Reid’s shoe bomb in 2001 and Umar Farouk Abdulmtallab’s underwear bomb in 2009. “The ability to magnify a small trace of an explosive to create a detectable signal is a major development in plasmon sensor technology,” said lead researcher Xiang Zhang, a professor of mechanical engineering at University of California Berkeley. During trials, the laser sensor

device successfully detected very low concentration of various explosives, including dinitrotoluene (DNT), ammonium nitrate and nitrobenzene. Accord-

ing to the study, the new sensor could have many advantages over current bomb-screening methods. Bomb-sniffing dogs are expensive to train and they get tired.

Probiotics helps control fat in liver

According to an expert, a previously uncharacterized developmental gene may mediate the ageing process IANS, NEW YORK

I

n what could point towards the possibility of one day using therapeutics to combat ageing, researchers have found in animal models that a single gene plays a surprising role in ageing that can be detected early in development. “We believe that a previously uncharacterized developmental gene known as Spns1 may mediate the ageing process,” said Shuji Kishi, an assistant professor at The

Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in the U.S. “Even a partial loss of Spns1 function can speed ageing,” Kishi noted. Using various genetic approaches to disturb Spns1 during the embryonic or larval stages of zebrafish, the scientists were able to produce some models with a shortened life span that lived long lives. While most studies of “senescence” — declines in a cell’s power of division and growth —have focused on later stages of life, the study is intriguing in exploring this phenomenon in early stages.

Healthy lifestyle key to fight mental decline, finds a study HelsinkiL Finnish researchers have suggested that a healthy lifestyle helps in fighting mental decline, with exercise and diet holding significant potential against Alzheimer’s disease. The study, led by Miia Kivipelto from the

Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the National Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki, has shown exercise and diet have a major impact on the risk of an individual suffering from Alzheimer’s disease at later stage of his life, Good News from Finland reported. The study trial — the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER Study)— involved 1,260 adults. Those recruited for the study aged between 60 and 77, and were facing a risk of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The subjects were divided into two groups. One group was offered standard care while the other group was asked to undergo lifestyle and diet changes.

“Mutations to Spns1 disturbs developmental senescence and badly affects the long-term biochronological ageing process,” Kishi said. The new study shows that Spns1, in conjunction with another pair of tumour suppressor genes, beclin 1 and p53 can, influences developmental senescence through two differential mechanisms: the

Spns1 defect was enhanced by Beclin 1 but suppressed by ‘basal’ p53. In addition to affecting senescence, Spns1 impedes autophagy, the process whereby cells remove unwanted or destructive proteins and balance energy needs during various life stages. The study appeared in the journal PLOS Genetics.

High salt ups heart disease risk in diabetics IANS, HELSINKI

P

eople with Type-2 diabetes have more to add to their list of dietary restrictions as researchers have found that a high salt diet may double their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. “The findings provide clear scientific evidence supporting lowsodium diets to reduce the rate of heart disease among people with diabetes,” said Chika Horikawa from University of Niigata Prefecture in Niigata, Japan. The study surveyed participants aged 40-70 who had been diagnosed with diabetes. In all, 1,588 people responded to a survey about their diets, including sodium intake. The researchers reviewed data on cardiovascular complications participants experienced over the

course of eight years. People who ate an average of 5.9 grams of sodium daily had double the risk of developing cardiovascular disease than those who ate, on average, 2.8 grams of sodium daily. The effects of a high-sodium

LONDON: For people suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, eating probiotics can help diminish the accumulation of fat in the liver. In lab experiments performed on rats, scientists demonstrated that administration of probiotics diminishes the accumulation of fat in the liver of obese rats. University of G r a n a d a researchers worked with three probiotic strains: Lactobacillus paracasei, Bifidobacterium breve and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The strains were administered for 30 days in the diet of obese rats. The probiotics led to an accumulation of lipids in the liver which was lower than that occurring in rats fed with a placebo. — IANS
