US Unemployment Rate Seen Near 20% as Covid-19 Slams Jobs Market Again in May The Labor Department’s closely watched monthly employment report on Friday could bolster economists’ dire predictions that it would take several years to recover from the economic meltdown.

HiIndia Newsdesk he US unemployment rate likely shot up to almost 20 per cent in May, a new post World War Two record, with millions more losing

their jobs, exposing the horrific human toll from the Covid-19 crisis. The Labor Department’s closely watched monthly employment report on Friday could bolster economists’ dire predictions that it would take several years to recover

Defence leaders say no to Trump’s troops idea

HiIndia Newsdesk In a clear rebuke to US President Donald Trump, former defence secretary James Mattis on Wednesday sided with people who had been protesting outside the White House over George Floyd’s killing. Mattis, who differs with Trump’s handling of the protests and his threats to deploy the military to end the unrest, joins a growing list of top defence leaders, past and present,

who have either openly criticised Trump or distanced themselves from him. “Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people, does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us,” Mattis wrote in a statement to the news publication The Atlantic. His remarks came hours after Mark Esper, his successor at the Pentagon, tried to distance himself from Trump’s threat to use US military personnel against protesters. Esper said that he doesn’t support invoking the Insurrection Act, which is a significant departure from Trump’s plan to use the 200-year-old law to deploy military forces domestically. Demonstrations in cities across the US to condemn racism and police abuses remained large but subdued.

from the economic meltdown. Still, May was probably the nadir for the labor market. While layoffs remained very high, they eased considerably in the second half of May as businesses reopened after shuttering in mid-March to slow the spread of Covid-19. Consumer confidence, manufacturing and services industries are also stabilizing, though at low levels, hopeful signs that the worst was over. “The good news is that we probably have hit the bottom,” said Sung Won Sohn, a finance and economics professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. “But the recovery will be painfully slow. It will take years, probably a decade to get back to where we were at the end of last year.” The employment report is compiled from two separate surveys. According to a Reuters poll of economists, the survey of households is likely to show the unemployment rate jumped to 19.8 per cent in May from 14.7 per cent in April, which was the highest since 1948 when the government started keeping records.

California Mayor Resigns Over Email About Police Killings HiIndia Newsdesk

The mayor of a Southern California city resigned following an email in which he stated he didn’t “believe there’s ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer” locally. Temecula Mayor James Stewart had apologised Thursday for the email, saying he never meant to use the word “good”. He had said he is dyslexic and so used voice text to send his late-night Tuesday message but failed to notice the added word. “Unfortunately I did not take the time to proofread what was recorded. I absolutely did not say that,” Stewart told the Riverside Press-Enterprise on Thursday.

Joe Biden, Donald Trump campaigns targeted by foreign hackers: Google

HiIndia Newsdesk Campaign staffs for both President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden have been targeted recently by foreign hackers, Google researchers said Thursday, highlighting persistent data security concerns ahead of the November US election.

A tweet from Google’s threat analysis chief Shane Huntley said the internet giant warned the Biden campaign about “phishing” efforts from China and the Trump campaign from Iran. “No sign of compromise. We sent users our govt attack warning and we referred to fed law enforcement,” Huntley wrote. The incidents nonetheless highlight fears about a repeat of a devastating data breach in 2016 involving the campaign of Hillary Clinton and a wide-ranging influence operation which officials said was directed from Russia. “This is a major disclosure of potential cyber-enabled influence operations, just as we saw in 2016,” Graham Brookie, director of the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensics Research Lab, said in a tweet.

‘Get your knee off our necks!’: George Floyd mourned in Minneapolis

H

People kneel outside a memorial service in honour of George Floyd.

HiIndia Newsdesk ollywood celebrities, musicians and political leaders gathered in front of the golden casket of George Floyd at a fiery memorial Thursday for the man whose death at the hands of police sparked global protests, with a civil rights leader declaring it is time for black people to demand, “Get your knee off our necks!” The service — the first in a series of memorials set for three cities over six days — unfolded at a sanctuary at North Central University as a judge a few blocks away set bail at $750,000 each for the three fired Minneapolis police officers charged with aiding and abetting murder in Floyd’s death. “George Floyd’s story has been the story of black folks. Because ever

since 401 years ago, the reason we could never be who we wanted and dreamed to be is you kept your knee on our neck,” the Rev. Al Sharpton said in a fierce eulogy. “It’s time for us to stand up in George’s name and say, ‘Get your knee off our necks!’” Floyd, a 46-year-old out-of-work bouncer, died May 25 after a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, put his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes as he lay handcuffed on the pavement, gasping that he couldn’t breathe. Chauvin has been charged with murder, and he and the others could get up to 40 years in prison. From coast to coast, and from Paris and London to Sydney and Rio de Janeiro, the chilling cellphone video of Floyd’s slow death has set off turbulent and sometimes violent demonstrations against police brutality, racism and inequality.

Ahead of talks with China over Ladakh standoff, India signals a realistic approach Officials indicate that Saturday’s border talks between Indian and Chinese military officials, led by lieutenant generals from both armies, may not lead to a breakthrough

HiIndia Newsdesk ndian military officials will walk into a meeting on Saturday with their Chinese counterparts to attempt to resolve the month-long row

over the Line of Actual Control with the knowledge that it may not be possible to achieve an immediate breakthrough to the Ladakh standoff, people familiar with the development told. Saturday’s meeting

is the first high-level meeting between Lt General Harinder Singh, the general officer commanding of Leh-based 14 Corps, and his Chinese counterpart who heads the People’s Liberation Army’s Group Army since the May 5 scuffle between soldiers near Pangong lake and subsequent stand-off at Galwan riverulet. The last round of talks between delegations led by two major general-rank officers of the two armies on June 2 had been inconclusive. Officials, however, underline that it was a positive sign that both sides were talking to each other through established military and diplomatic channels. But the dialogue does not mean an immediate resolution. “This is the eventuality that we are prepared for,” one of them said. India has already made it clear it wants the Chinese troops to move back and restore status quo ante on the four positions.

Jodhpur constable kneels on man’s neck for not wearing a mask

HiIndia Newsdesk In a reminder of the George Floyd’s case, a video of a police constable pinning a man on the ground and kneeling on his neck in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur has gone viral on social media. Jodhpur DCP (West) Priti Chandra said the policeman had acted in self-defence to prevent the man from attacking him. The incident took place Thursday when Mukesh Kumar Prajapat was caught roaming without a mask by two police

constables. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the government has made it mandatory for citizens to wear a mask before stepping out. The policemen alleged that Prajapat began slapping and hitting them when they confronted him for violation of the norms. One of the constables can been seen kneeling on Prajapat’s neck for a few seconds in the viral video. “A constable clicked the person’s photo when he was not wearing a mask. And when the constable approached him and enquired why he was not wearing a mask, the person immediately pulled out a mask and threatened them that he will gouge their eyes,” DCP Chandra said. “So, the policemen called for a jeep but before it could arrive, the man started slapping and punching both the constables – there are videos of the same. We have filed an FIR against him and arrested him,” she added.

HiIndia Newsdesk entley Motors plans to slash as many as 1,000 jobs in the U.K., about a quarter of its workforce, to cope with the fallout of the coronavirus crisis after years of weak profitability.

The British luxury carmaker plans to reduce headcount through voluntary measures but “cannot rule out future compulsory redundancies,” the Crewe-based manufacturer said Friday in a statement.Bentley, part of Volkswagen AG since 1998, has been struggling to improve earnings amid persistent uncertainty over Brexit. It reported 65 million euros ($74 million) in operating profit last year as global deliveries rose 5% to 11,006 cars, after suffering a 288 million-euro loss in 2018. The workforce reduction echoes cutbacks announced by industry peers from Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings PLC to Renault SA. The U.S. and the U.K., two key sales regions for Bentley, have been hit particularly hard by the Covid-19 outbreak. The European auto industries have been hurt badly by the coronavirus pandemic, with factories and showrooms forced to close for several weeks as governments imposed lockdowns to contain the spread. Car sales collapsed in April, fared little better last month and are only expected to pick up as economies start to reopen in June. U.K. showrooms reopened this week under strict social distancing rules, but demand remained tepid and the timeframe for a recovery is uncertain. “It is vital, even more so now with what is going on around us, that we look to the long-term future of Bentley,” Chief Executive Officer Adrian Hallmark said in the statement. “Covid-19 has not been the cause of this measure but a hastener.”

A group of about 20 producers and other employees from RTHK’s TV and radio operations barged into a conference room where Leung Ka-wing, director of broadcasting, was meeting with top executives. Some staff demanded to know why the satirical and current affairs television show “Headliner” – which had drawn official complaints after poking fun at the Hong Kong police in an episode in February - was being cancelled, and whether the move was prompted by pressure from authorities. The impromptu meeting lasted about 90 minutes, during which several staffers cried and raised their voices, according to three people present. Leung said he took the decision to cancel the show in order to “protect RTHK” and its staff, according to the three people.

Oxford vaccine clinical trials to take volunteers from Brazil HiIndia Newsdesk Brazil and Mexico reported record daily coronavirus death tolls as governments in South America battled to fortify defences against the pandemic with fresh lockdown orders and curfews. The WHO revealed that at least 100,000 infections were officially reported worldwide

for each of the last five days, adding the Americas bore much of the brunt. Mexico on Wednesday announced more than 1,000 deaths in a day for the first time, while Brazil reported a record 1,349 daily deathsThe clinical trial for a vaccine conducted by experts at the University of Oxford will soon recruit 2,000 volunteers in Brazil The university said that on Tuesday, the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency approved the inclusion of Brazil in the clinical trials. Scientists are resuming Covid-19 trials of the now world-famous drug hydroxychloroquine, as confusion continues to reign about the anti-malarial hailed by US President Donald Trump as a potential “game-changer” in fighting the pandemic.

The alarm was sounded by Canada’s chief public health officer Dr Theresa Tam even as fresh data points towards the coronavirus crisis waning in the country. During a regular media briefing, Tam said, “If we relax too much or too soon, the epidemic will most likely rebound with explosive growth as a distinct possibility.” She also released the latest modelling for the spread of the disease in Canada, projecting that the number of deaths could range between 7,700 to 9,400 by June 15, while total cases may be between 97,990 and 107,454. As of Thursday night, the country recorded 7637 fatalities and 93711 infections. That relatively positive projection was welcomed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during his daily briefing, as he said, “That’s an encouraging sign that the virus is slowing and, in some places, even stopping.”

Brazil’s Covid-19 death toll surges to thirdhighest in world HiIndia Newsdesk Brazil’s death toll from the novel coronavirus has surged past 34,000 to become the thirdhighest in the world, surpassing Italy’s, according to official figures released Thursday. The South American country reported a new record of 1,473 deaths in 24 hours, bringing its overall toll to 34,021, behind only the United States and Britain. Brazil has now confirmed 614,941 infections, the health ministry said -- the secondlargest caseload in the world, behind the US. Experts say under-testing in Brazil means the real numbers are probably much higher. The latest figures underlined the grim toll the virus is taking in Latin America, the latest epicenter in the pandemic.

s the investigation into the tragic death of a pregnant elephant in Kerala continues, The Indian Express has learnt that forest officials had first spotted the injured animal on May 23 at a forest border. A case under The Wildlife Act has been registered, and an inquiry is on, sources said. The sources said that the exact spot where the elephant was injured, and who was responsible for the explosion that injured her mouth and led to her death, are yet to be ascertained. It has been alleged that the elephant was injured after it was fed a pineapple stuffed with explosives. On May 23, sources said, forest officials had received information about the presence of an elephant near Ambalappara at the border of Pottiyara forest in Mannarkad division in the Western Ghats. Upon reaching the spot, the officials had

seen the elephant with the injured mouth. The elephant had subsequently walked off into the woods. Two days later, on May 25, the elephant was seen standing in a river in the Theyyamkund area, apparently to cool the wound. A veterinary surgeon who examined her, told officials that she could not be tranquillised and treated, as the injury was serious. The forest department had concluded at the time that the injury was at least a week old. It subsequently decided to try to move

it out with the help of ‘kumki’ (trained) elephants, but the injured elephant died before it could be pulled out. The elephant’s tragic death became more distressing after a post mortem examination revealed she was pregnant. And a raging public debate ensued after Mohana Krishnan, a forest department section officer who was part of the Rapid Response Team that attempted the rescue, posted about the incident on Facebook.

Chelsea players pay tribute to George Floyd

HiIndia Newsdesk London: Chelsea players on Tuesday kneeled to show support for the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement ahead of their training session as the club paid tribute to George Floyd. “Before training at Cobham this morning, the Chelsea players and coaching staff formed the letter H, for humans, and knelt in a show of support for the Black Lives Matter movement,” the club said in a statement. “The player-led initiative comes as protests take place around the world following the death of George Floyd in the United States early last week,” the statement added. Protests erupted in Minneapolis and other US cities on Tuesday after Floyd, an African-American man, died following his arrest by the police.

Chauvin was also charged with second-degree manslaughter. “I have always had the utmost respect for our law enforcement,” Woods, 44, wrote late Monday night. “They train so diligently to understand how, when and where to use force. This shocking tragedy clearly crossed that line.” Floyd’s death on May 25 ignited protests in Minneapolis and around the United States that have continued for more than a week, with some growing violent. HiIndia Newsdesk Indian speedster Mohammed Shami on Tuesday said he can still get reverse swing going even after the proposed ban of use of saliva, provided the shine is properly maintained. The ICC is set to implement a ban on use of saliva to shine the ball when the sport is resumed after the coronavirus-forced lockdown as it feels spitting on the ball elevates the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

“There will be difficulties. We have been accustomed to using saliva since childhood. It’s been deeply ingrained … If you are a fast bowler, instinctively you apply saliva to shine the ball. But yes, if you can maintain the shine of the dry ball, it will definitely reverse,” Shami said in an Instagram chat with Rohit Juglan. The ICC Cricket Committee headed by Anil Kumble, however, has said players can use sweat to polish the ball but Shami said it will not help a fast bowler. “Sweat and saliva work differently. I don’t think it will help. I never tried bowling without saliva. Now because of COVID-19 pandemic, it’s very important to stop using saliva,” said Shami, whose mastery over the reverse swing has been one of the big plus of Indian team. Shami said the players missed the presence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni on and off the field. “I played in all the formats under him barring IPL. With regard to guidance, he will always treat his teammates in such a way that you won’t even feel that he is M S Dhoni.

New Delhi [India], (ANI): The Sports Ministry has decided to provisionally recognise the 54 National Sports Federations (NSFs) until September this year. It has been explained that the extension has been given due to the coronavirus pandemic and imposition of country-wide lockdown. All those NSF’s who had their government recognition till December 31, 2019, have had their recognition renewed till September this year. Among the list of 54 NSFs, Rowing Federation of India does not feature in the list. The Taekwondo Federation of India also has not find a place in the 54 NSFs list.

Exercises to keep your Muscle Intact Benefits of coffee against digestive disorders like gallstone 1. Core and back exercise

Get on all fours (hands and knees), keep your lower back flat. Basically, it should not be too arched or too hunched. Keeping this stance intact, lift your right arm and the left leg off the floor together. Hold this for five seconds while breathing normally. Now finish two sets of 10 repetitions with each side.

Coffee may protect against gallstone disease is not yet known, it has been observed that the risk for the condition declines with increasing daily consumption of coffee. Coffee is good for your gut health, suggests a recent study that highlights its potential protective effect against gallstones and pancreatitis. The report also advocates other beneficial effects that coffee consumption may have on the process of digestion, including supporting gut microflora - and promoting gut motility. The report from the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee (ISIC), is entitled ‘Coffee and its effect on digestion.’ The report was

2. Knee strengthening exercise

Sit on a chair with back support. Roll up a towel, keep it between your knees, and squeeze the same. While squeezing, lift one leg and extend it in front to straighten the knee. Hold this position for five to 10 seconds and relax. Repeat this with the other leg as well till you finish two sets of it.

authored by Professor Carlo La Vecchia, at the Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health, University of Milan, Italy, who commented: “The effect of coffee on digestion is an evolving area of research. Data indicates benefits against common digestive complaints such as constipation, as well as a potential reduction in the risk of more serious conditions like chronic liver diseases, from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), gallstones and related pancreatitis”.

Is it safe to return to the gym?

People are going to have to understand and accept that there will be some risk of virus transmission, if and when they revisit their gyms, Dr Anderson says. “But,” he says, “there are many steps people can take to mitigate those risks.”

3. Neck and shoulders exercise

Lie on your stomach, rest your forehead on a pillow/ towel, keep your arms by your sides resting on the floor. Now, pull your shoulder blades up and back towards your tailbone and hold. Next, lift your arms off the floor and hold this position for 10 seconds while breathing normally. “When you have a relatively high density of people exercising and sweating in a contained space, you have conditions where communicable diseases can spread easily,” says Dr James Voos, chairman of orthopaedic surgery at the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, US, and senior author of the study. Gym equipment also can be devilishly difficult to sanitise. Dumbbells and kettlebells, for instance, “are high-touch metal, with strange shapes and many different places people can grasp,” says Dr Deverick Anderson, a professor of medicine and director of the Duke Center for Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, US. “They are not easy to clean.” In consequence, “people are going to have to understand and accept that there will be some risk” of virus transmission, if and when they revisit their gyms, Dr Anderson says. “But,” he says, “there are many steps people can take to mitigate those risks.” First, and most essential, plan to disinfect yourself and any surfaces that you touch at your gym, frequently.

“There should be a sink with soap so you can wash your hands, or a hand-sanitiser station as soon as you walk in the door,” says Radford Slough, the owner of Urban Body Fitness, a gym in downtown Atlanta frequented by doctors and CDC scientists. Sign-in procedures should not require touch, and gym employees should stand behind sneeze guards or be wearing face masks, he adds. The gym space itself should be plentifully stocked with spray bottles containing disinfectant as well as clean cloths or bleach wipes for sanitising surfaces. The standard all-purpose wet wipes that many gyms stock , Dr Voos says, “will not kill most germs.” Bring your own water bottle to avoid using drinking fountains. When spraying a disinfectant, give it time — a minute or so — to kill germs before wiping. And clean any grime or dust off surfaces first. Ideally, other gym patrons who have lifted weights or perspired on machines will have scrupulously scrubbed them afterward. But do not depend on the cleanliness of strangers. Instead, disinfect weights, bars, benches and machine rails or knobs yourself before and after every use.

Brushing teeth 3 times a day can lower heart failure risk For the results, the study examined the connection between oral hygiene and occurrence of these two conditions

rushing teeth frequently is linked with lower risks of atrial fibrillation and heart failure, according to a new study. Tooth brushing three or more times a day was associated with a 10

per cent lower risk of atrial fibrillation and a 12 per cent lower risk of heart failure during 10.5-year follow up, the research added. The study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, enrolled 161,286 participants of the Korean National Health Insurance System aged 40 to 79 with no

history of atrial fibrillation or heart failure. “We studied a large group over a long period, which adds strength to our findings,” said study author TaeJin Song of Ewha Woman’s University in South Korea. Previous research suggests that poor oral hygiene leads to bacteria in

spirin can be considered an effective and safe option to other, more expensive medications to treat acute migraines as well as prevent recurrent attacks, a new study suggests. The findings suggest that highdose aspirin, in doses from 900 to

ancreatic cancer is resistant to all current treatments. Patients have extremely poor chances of surviving for five years after being diagnosed but a new study found that a small molecule has the ability to induce the self-destruction of pancreatic cancer cells. The study, published in the journal Oncotarget, was conducted with xenografts -transplantations of human pancreatic cancer into immunocompromised mice. The treatment reduced the number of cancer cells by 90 per cent in the developed tumors a month after being administered. “In research published in 2017, we discovered a mechanism that causes the self-destruction of human cancer cells during their duplication (mitosis)

without affecting normal cells,” said study researcher Malca Cohen-Armon from Tel Aviv University in Israel. “We have now harnessed this information to efficiently eradicate human pancreatic cancer cells in xenografts. The current results were obtained using a small molecule that evokes this selfdestruction mechanism in a variety of human cancer cells,” Cohen-Armon added. According to the researchers, the mice were treated with a molecule called PJ34, which is permeable in the cell membrane but affects human cancer cells exclusively. This molecule causes an anomaly during the duplication of human cancer cells, provoking their rapid cell death. Thus, cell multiplication itself resulted in cell death in the treated cancer cells.

the blood, causing inflammation in the body. Inflammation increases the risks of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and heart failure (the heart’s ability to pump blood or relax and fill with blood is impaired). This study examined the connection between oral hygiene and occurrence of these two conditions. Participants underwent a routine medical examination between 2003

and 2004. Information was collected on height, weight, laboratory tests, illnesses, lifestyle, oral health, and oral hygiene behaviors. During a median follow-up of 10.5 years, 4,911 (3.0 per cent) participants developed atrial fibrillation and 7,971 (4.9 per cent) developed heart failure. The findings were independent of a number of factors including age, sex, socioeconomic status, regular exercise, alcohol consumption, body mass index, and comorbidities such as hypertension. According to the researchers, one possibility is that frequent tooth brushing reduces bacteria living in the pocket between the teeth and gums, thereby preventing translocation to the bloodstream. It is certainly too early to recommend toothbrushing for the prevention of atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure, the study said. “While the role of inflammation in the occurrence of cardiovascular disease is becoming more and more evident, intervention studies are needed to define strategies of public health importance,” it added.

Social media use linked to eating disorder in children IANS, SYDNEY

arents, take a note. Researchers have found that excessive use of social media, particularly platforms with a strong focus on image posting and viewing such as Snapchat and Instagram, is associated with eating disorder in young adolescents. For the study, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, researchers examined data on 996 grade 7 and 8 adolescents. “While a range of studies have focused on the impact of social media on body image, this is the first to examine the relationship between specific social media platforms and disordered eating behaviors and thoughts,” said study lead author Simon Wilksch from Flinders University in Australia. “Also, most other studies had

focused on older adolescents or young-adult women,” he said. “The study on associations between disordered eating and social media use among young adolescent girls and boys suggested that much more needed to be done to increase resilience in young people to become less adversely impacted by social media pressures,” Wilksch added.

For the study, researchers examined data on 996 grade 7 and 8 adolescents.

Aspirin can be safe option to treat migraines Migraines can last anywhere from four to 72 hours.

1,300 milligrams given at the onset of symptoms, is an effective and safe treatment option for acute migraine headaches. In addition, some but not all ran-

domized trials suggest the possibility that daily aspirin in doses from 81 to 325 milligrams may be an effective and safe treatment option for the prevention of recurrent migraine headaches. “Our review supports the use of high dose aspirin to treat acute migraine as well as low dose daily aspirin to prevent recurrent attacks,” said study researcher Charles H. Hennekens from Florida Atlantic University in the US.

“Moreover, the relatively favorables side effect profile of aspirin and extremely low costs compared with other prescription drug therapies may provide additional clinical options for primary health care providers treating acute as well as recurrent migraine headaches,” Hennekens added. Common symptoms of migraine include a headache that often begins as a dull pain and then grows into a throbbing pain, which can be inca-

pacitating and often occurs with nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to sound, light and smell. Migraines can last anywhere from four to 72 hours and may occur as many times as several times a week to only once a year. “Migraine headaches are among the most common and potentially debilitating disorders encountered by primary health care providers,” said study first author Bianca Biglione.

So, with Raktanchal, director Ritam Srivastava hasn’t created anything which we haven’t watched before. In fact, the clumsy treatment given to the story and how the actors approach their characters makes things worse. While Kranti Prakash Jha looks a bit convincing as the anti-hero, Nikitin Dheer doesn’t fit his part at all. Also, the over 30-minute long episodes feel long and never-ending.

Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and other celebrities speak out

The death of George Floyd and the subsequent Minneapolis protests that have turned violent has shaken the United States of America. Floyd, a black man, died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into the former’s neck even as he begged for air. Hollywood celebrities have shown their support and solidarity for African-Americans and the protesters Pop star Taylor Swift targeted the incumbent US President. She said in a tweet, “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November. @realdonaldtrump.”

One plus unintentionally disables Google Assistant tests new voice matching feature to verify purchases ‘X-Ray’ filter with an update

S

martphone manufacturer company OnePlus accidentally pushed an over-the-air update that disables a filter that can see through some thin black plastics and, in certain cases, clothes. According to The Verge, OnePlus said on May 19 that it would temporarily disable the filter in the Chinese version of its operating system in an update, though the company hadn’t planned on removing the filter from its global software. Instead, OnePlus said it would update the filter. The recent update removed the filter for people outside of China anyway. The filter, called ‘Photochrom’, creates an X-Ray-like effect by using the infrared sensors built into the OnePlus 8 Pro to capture light that’s not visible to the human eye. The feature was intended to be used to create interestinglooking photos. But it came under scrutiny once people realized that it could sometimes see-through clothing. According to update notes seen by XDA Developers, The Photochrom filter was “temporarily removed for adjustment.”

aking purchases with your voice is convenient, but it’s far from secure. The multinational tech company Google is attempting to change that when using Assistant by introducing an optional voice verification test. According to The Verge, the new security feature relies on Google Assistant’s Voice Match and it’s being rolled out slowly as part of a limited pilot program to test how well it works with smart speakers and smart displays. The Voice Match training feature was updated recently to include phrases so

It measures less than half an inch thick and it weighs just 4.5 ounces. The drive works with both Mac and Windows and connects via a USB 3.0 port. The Slim comes with a two-year limited warranty. For Rs 5,473, Seagate’s Backup Plus Slim is not a bad option.

Turn the GPS location off

GPS takes up a lot of power. While some apps need the location access to help you serve better, keeping it on at all times ends in speedy loss of battery. You can turn on the GPS when you really need and keep it off otherwise. You need to go to Settings > Location and turn off the ‘Location Service’.

Logitech M337 Wireless Mouse

Turn on the Dark Mode

Nowadays, most of the Android devices come with Dark Mode option that applies dark theme across the user interface. If your phone has an OLED screen, it will help you preserve battery. Since OLED panels don’t need a backlight, it produces rich blacks by turning off individual pixels.

Limit apps running in the background We are habitual of exiting apps either by tapping on the home button or by swiping up from the bottom. It leaves the application running in the background. First, you need to exit the application properly or clear it from the recent items. Secondly, you need to restrict some apps from running in the background.

Get rid of battery killers

some apps suffer from bugs and other issues causing them to malfunction and drain the battery life of your phone. You need to monitor the battery usage of your phone to identify such apps and get rid of them. Go to Settings > Battery > Power Usage to monitor the apps’ power usage

Anker 4-in-1 USB hub

The Logitech M337 (picture on top) has been hailed as the best budget wireless mouse, and for a reason. It’s superlightweight, and it’s priced at just Rs 1,445. With up to 1,000dpi, the wireless mice’s battery can easily last up to 10 months on a single AA battery. The M337 is a light and comfy mouse with responsive buttons. And on top of it, the mice supports Windows, Mac, Android, and even Chrome OS. While every laptop comes with at least one USB 3.0, if you want to plug in your hard drive, flash drive, or smartphone at the same time, then there is no option. That’s where Anker’s 4-in-one USB 3.0 hub comes in. The Anker 4-in-1 USB 3.0 hub, as the name suggests, can handle four low-power devices at a time. This compact looking 4-in-1 hub comes with data-transfer speeds of up to 5GBps and also features an LED light to indicate connection status. The 2-ft-long USB cable connects this Anker hub to your laptop or desktop. It’s compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems. Priced at Rs 1,529, the Anker 4-in-1-port hub is probably your best bet.

The new security feature relies on Google Assistant’s Voice Match and it’s being rolled out slowly as part of a limited pilot program to test how well it works with smart speakers and smart displays that the Assistant could more accurately determine who is issuing commands. The company with the better accuracy feature, clearly feels Voice Match is good enough to now act as an extra layer of security. Once enabled, your Voice Match profile will be used whenever a purchase is made through Assistant via voice. However, for now, the verification of purchases is limited to in-app through Google Play or restaurant orders. As it’s a pilot program, one can expect that restriction to be lifted once Google has fixed any bugs that appear.

SpaceX astronauts reach Space Station after milestone voyage

NASA astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken head to launch pad 39 to board a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket for a second launch attempt on NASA?s SpaceX Demo-2 mission to the International Space Station from NASA?s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S. May 30, 2020.

Two American astronauts aboard a SpaceX capsule docked with the International Space Station, forging a new landmark for NASA and visionary billionaire Elon Musk. The Dragon craft carrying NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley arrived at the orbiting lab at 10:16 a.m. Eastern time Sunday, about 19 hours after lifting off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. “We have to congratulate the men and women of SpaceX,” Hurley said after the docking, while going through procedures required before the men could enter the station. “Their incredible efforts over the last several years to make this possible cannot go overstated.” “This is an incredible time to be at NASA,” he said, noting three manned-vehicle programs in the works and progress toward a return to the moon. First time that humans have traveled to orbit in a commercially developed spacecraft — and the first time American astronauts have flown from U.S. soil since the space shuttle program ended in 2011.

abyasachi’s love for saris is an enduring affair. The famed designer has been the choice of several celebrities for their wedding days. His creations have also been donned by celebrities on various red carpets across the globe. For instance, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Kangana Ranaut wore his saris at Cannes in 2010, 2013 and 2018, respectively. The designer recently shared those pictures adding a little note highlighting his deep attachment for the garment. “When I think about the various times I’ve designed for the red carpet, my proudest moments have been the sarees — especially those worn for international red carpets. In my opinion, there is something so powerful about this garment. Perhaps it’s because some of my greatest muses (like Amrita Sher-Gil, Gayatri Devi, Leela Naidu) wore them with pride. Or maybe because of the nuanced and beautiful history of the saree in many parts of India and the surrounding regions. Or it’s the craftsmanship, time, and love that goes into weaving the 6 yards of fabric. Or maybe it’s all of that, and more,” he wrote.

Restaurants 2.0 prepare for reopening

Exercising can help one stay motivated and positive, which is important in the current times. Showing us how to stay in good shape with a simple exercise that is great for lower body strength is Shararat fame actor Shruti Seth. The fitness aficionado, who regularly shares photos of her workout sessions, recently shared a post where she can be seen doing “simple looking” wall sit exercise. However, the exercise is not as simple as it looks, Seth mentioned. Here’s what she captioned the Instagram post, “30 second wall sit. Tougher than it looks. Wall sit exercises are great for sculpting the thighs, hips, calves, and lower abs. Give it a try!” mask that you will remove only while eating. Now, stop imagining. For this is going to be the new normal post the lockdown, once the restaurants reopen. Gone are the days when you shoved people with your elbows trying to get a drink at a crowded bar, when you favoured a particular restaurant because it was cosy, crowded and buzzing. Dining out was not just about the food, but also about socializing. In a post-Covid world, it is all about social distancing. Restaurants across the country are struggling to reopen. Not everyone will. “We have to accept the fact that a lot of our restaurants will never open again,” says Riyaaz Amlani, CEO of Impresario Handmade Restaurants that owns brands such as Smoke House Deli, Social, Salt Water Café, amongst others. As per the National Restaurant Association of India, four out of every 10 restaurants is likely to be permanently closed in the absence of a government bailout.

Indian American Judge Manish Shah Named to Reopen Federal Courthouses in the Northern District of Illinois BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL - A task force has been created to explore ways to reopen federal courthouses in the Northern District of Illinois, whose members include Indian American U.S. District Judge Manish Shah. The task force – chaired by U.S. District Judge Matthew F. Kennelly and including U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan E. Cox; U.S. District Judge John J. Tharp Jr.; and Thomas G. Bruton, clerk of the U.S. District Court – will look to find ways to reopen while protecting people from COVID-19, Chief U.S. District Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer announced May 25, according to a Chicago Daily Law Bulletin report. In a video message posted on the district court’s website, Pallmeyer said the task force is charged with planning “for the safe resumption of operations” at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse in Chicago and the Stanley J. Roszkowski U.S. Courthouse in Rockford, the report said. Pallmeyer said task force members have already made progress. They have conferred with public officials and studied guidance on safely operating in public spaces and office buildings, she said, the report added. The guidance, she said, addresses matters ranging from screening visitors to the right way to clean, it said. But there is still work to do, Pallmeyer continued. Among the changes will be a halt to routinely conducting proceedings in criminal cases in the courthouses, Pallmeyer said, according to the Bulletin. Because of the difficulties transporting detainees to the courthouse, she said, almost

all proceedings will be conducted on the filings or by telephone or videoconference, the report said. The task force also is examining how jury trials can be conducted safely using social distancing so participants will not be exposed to the coronavirus, Pallmeyer noted in the report. However, she said, members of the bench and bar will have to keep more distance between themselves, according to the report. Pallmeyer in the report said she hopes the empty courthouses fill up soon. “I pledge to you that our court will move in the safest possible manner to allow as much of our traditional courtroom interaction to return as soon as possible,” she said. “We will do this in a responsible, thoughtful manner, relying on the facts, medical evidence and wise counsel from leading experts.”

Even though the courthouses have been largely closed since the middle of March, Pallmeyer said, the federal court has been busy, the report added. More than 1,350 lawsuits and more than 7,000 motions have been filed, she said, and judges have entered more than 34,000 orders, the report said. Shah is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Prior to joining the court, he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois. On Sept. 19, 2013, he was nominated by President Barack Obama to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The United States Senate confirmed Shah on April 30, 2014, on a vote of 95-0. Shah earned his B.A., with honors and distinction, from Stanford University in 1994 and his J.D., with honors, from the University of Chicago School of Law.

Covid 19 Relief Efforts by Hindus of Greater Houston BY A STAFF WRITER HOUSTON, TX- Since the early days of the pandemic, Hindus of Greater Houston (HGH) have been routing their combined resources into multiple food drives, distribution of PPE’s and actively fundraising to help Houstonians impacted by the financial fallout. About $100,000 has been raised by HGH to date for Sewa International and other organizations for their relief efforts. HGH Chairman Dev Mahajan apprised the gathering about the commendable work done by the Hindu Worship Society, Arya Samaj and VPSS with respect to food drives and the blood donation camp. VPSS was going to “targeted communities” to distribute food instead of requiring them to come to the temple. Sanjay Jain from the Arya Samaj and Rajinder Soni from the Hindu Worship Society filled in more details about the events. On May 31th, a blood donation drive will be held at the Arya Samaj School building from 9:00 am to 1.30 pm in collaboration with the Gulf Coast Blood Center. Sanjay Jain, who is spearheading this drive, appealed to all Indo Americans to register and donate blood. COVID testing is not required. However, donors should not have traveled to India in the last one year. Those who come in between 9-10:30 am will receive a free pack of 5 cloth masks. Groceries will be distributed between 12-1:00 pm Patanjali Yogpeeth President Shekhar Agrawal stated that preparations for Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev’s visit to Houston for the International Day of Yoga on June 21 has been shelved. A virtual two hour program has been planned instead to mark the day and will be live streamed from India House. Swami Ramdev will join the session from India and yoga enthusiasts can follow Swami Ramdev’s yoga routine from their homes. Member of the Hindu Heritage Youth Camp Committee Bharat Pallod regretfully reported that for the first time in 35 years, HGH may not be hosting its annual camp for children. He further clarified “we are still working

Pujya Bhaktivardhandas Swami -BAPS Mandir Houston

towards making a final decision on HHYC 2020. A traditional 5 day, 125 person camp is likely not possible and we are working towards a creative solution.” Sewa International, which swung into action as soon as the first tremors of COVID-19 were felt, has been making a strong and positive impact in Houston. President Gitesh Desai, who joined the meeting in the midst of two food drives organized by the Gujarati Samaj of Houston and VPSS providing food for a combined number of 550 families, shared additional information about the relief efforts. He also added that the much sought after internships with Sewa will be available in a week’s time. Kantibhai Patel and HGH President Thara Narasimhan from Voice of Sanatan Hinduism are offering free airtime for food and blood drive announcements. Tune into their program on Masala Radio from 12-2 pm every Sunday. Houston’s top cardiologist Dr. Randeep Suneja offered a much needed dose of optimism on the medical strides for COVID-19 treatments. As cities are emerging from lockdown, he warned everyone to continue social distancing measures and avoid unnecessary exposure especially the vulnerable elderly population. Statistical analysis expect the number of hospitalizations to drop by the end of June.

Doctors are learning to better manage the disease with hydroxychloroquine and blood thinners. These medications are being administered to patients and are found to be effective in the first 72 hours. India is at the forefront of yet another successful endeavor. Durga Bari’s Past President Parthasarathi Chatterjee highlighted the creation of the National Digital Library that is being put together by the IIT’s and will be the biggest data base of information on COVID-19 from testing to research. A virtual online concert featuring singers like Kailash Kher, Shreya Ghoshal and Usha Uthap is also being organized to raise funds for the recent cyclone that has devastated Kolkata. A few temples have cautiously opened their doors to devotees such as the Meenakshi Temple, VPSS and the Hindu Worship Society. Parathasarathy Krishnaswamy from MTS drew attention to some of the best practices that have been implemented to minimize the risk of infections. Only one entrance/ exit is open, temperature screenings will be conducted, offerings of only milk/flowers are permitted and masks are mandatory. The temple is fumigated every 2 days while door knobs are sanitized every hour. The kitchen is open for takeout only. Functions are permitted at 25% capacity. Earlier in the teleconference, Pujya Bhaktivardhandas Swami, from the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Houston, appreciated the good work being done by volunteer leaders of HGH to support and counsel their members in these challenging times. As inspiration for the attendees own approach to leadership, Swamiji shared excerpts of a speech given by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, on 21 May 1950, on the day he was appointed as president of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha at the young age of 28. A humble sense of servant leadership and genuine wish to attribute every success to the blessings of his Gurus, that characterized his life and mission, were evident in this historic address.

$10,000 Released by Seva Int’l in First Tranche of Cyclone Amphan Disaster Relief BY A STAFF WRITER HOUSTON, TX. — Sewa International announced the first tranche of $10,000 toward rescue and relief operations as Super Cyclone Amphan devastated vast stretches of Odisha and West Bengal, according to a press release. Amphan, which began forming on May 16 and dissipated May 21, has caused widespread damage to infrastructure in the coastal states of Odisha and West Bengal as it moved inland with 105 mph winds, heavy sea surge, and massive rain. Boats, agricultural crops, and houses have been destroyed, electricity poles and trees uprooted, and vast stretches of agricultural land, villages, and towns have become inundated. Amphan was, according to NASA estimates, the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Causing widespread damage over the Eastern parts of India and Bangladesh, Amphan is the strongest cyclone to strike the Ganges Delta since 2007 and the first super cyclonic storm to occur in the Bay of Bengal since the 1999 Odisha cyclone. It has claimed 72 lives in India as of May 21. Adding to the challenges facing rescue and relief efforts is the current pandemic

where these affected areas are developing into COVID-19 hotspots. “Sewa International with on the ground partners/volunteers is committed to providing all support to the affected people in this hour of need,” Swadesh Katoch, vice-president of Disaster Recovery, Sewa International, stated in a press release. “ We have partnered with relief

organizations in India over the past two decades, and our people are already in the area working on rescue and relief operations. There is an urgent need of tarpaulins, packed food, utensils, seasonal clothing, first-aid kits, toiletries, flashlights, water bottles, mosquito mats/nets, backpacks, etc., and we will do our best to supply them in the coming days,” added the Indian American activist.

Unemployment Rate is Highest Since March

BY A STAFF WRITER WAHINGTON, DC- Unemployment figures showed 2.4 million people filed for benefits last week. That means 38.6 million people have filed jobless claims in the last nine weeks, or about one out of every four Americans who had a job in February. The unemployment numbers alone do not capture the full picture of the economic carnage caused by the public health crisis. A new Census Bureau survey shows that 47% of all households say their income has declined. Today’s news comes as Congress faces a largely partisan debate over whether to approve further federal relief. House Democrats approved a plan that would extend enhanced employment benefits, which are set to expire in July, into January. Most Congressional Republicans say the total price tag of the relief bill is too much, and they believe the economy will bounce back as states begin to reopen. In Illinois, the unemployment rate is 16.4%, the highest since 1976.

Native Californian Indian American Physician on the Frontline Treating Patients of COVID-19 in New York

Dr. Avish Arora

BY A STAFF WRITER CERRITOS, CA ¬– A native Californian physician, Dr. Avish Arora, is among the doctors on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, treating droves of patients in New

York on a daily basis. Arora, a native of Los Angeles and resident physician-researcher at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, has been on the frontline treating COVID-19 patients in New York City. Despite early shortages of personal protective equipment for frontline workers in New York, which went on to become one of the country’s largest epicenters of the pandemic, Arora volunteered to be pulled off his service to lend a hand in the city’s coronavirus response, a news release said. As a clinician and researcher, the Indian American doctor also became involved in creating an institution-approved protocol to understand the transmission of COVID-19 from virus-positive pregnant women to newborn babies, the release said. When off-duty, Arora has been virtually imparting his experiences from the frontlines, including as a guest speaker for classes at Los Angeles Mission College where his mother, Dr. Chander Arora, is a professor of biotechnology, according to the release. Students were thrilled to learn about his first-hand experiences and were very inquisitive about his research and the emerging nature of the virus. His father is also contributing towards clinical research at a hospital in West Los Angeles. Federal Judge Enters Order of Permanent Injunction Against New York Company for Distributing Unapproved Drugs FDA NEWS RELEASE NEW YORK, NY- A federal judge has ordered two individuals doing business as Sundial Herbal Products to stop distributing unapproved new drugs and misbranded drugs until they comply with federal law. According to the complaint, despite previous warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and repeated promises to correct violations, Sundial continued to violate the law and distribute their products. “Americans expect and deserve medical treatments that have been scientifically proven to be safe and effective. Making claims that unproven drugs can cure or prevent diseases places consumers’ health at risk,” said FDA Chief Counsel Stacy Amin. “We remain committed to pursuing and taking swift action against those who attempt to subvert the regulatory functions of the FDA by repeatedly disregarding the law and distributing unapproved products.” The court concluded that Sundial’s products have no published adequate and well-controlled studies to support their claims, and the FDA has not approved any application for any of Sundial’s drugs, despite Sundial claiming that their products can cure, treat, or prevent a wide variety of diseases, including syphilis, cancer, and HIV/AIDS. For example, Sundial claimed that its Sundial Organic Hemp Seed Oil “suppresses the growth of cancer” and that Sundial Cassava Meal “prevents heart disease.” The FDA is particularly concerned that products that claim to cure, mitigate,

treat or prevent serious diseases may cause consumers to delay or stop appropriate medical treatment. As a result of these violations, on May 27, 2020, U.S District Judge Edgardo Ramos in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York entered an order of permanent injunction against Rahsan Hakim and Adoniiah Rahsan, individuals doing business as Sundial Herbal Products. The complaint, filed by the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of the FDA, sought a permanent injunction against the Bronx, New York, drug distributor and its most responsible individuals. This action follows multiple FDA inspections conducted at Sundial between

2012 and 2017. The FDA issued a warning letterExternal Link Disclaimer to Sundial in 2013 for similar violations. Despite assurances that the violations noted in the warning letter would be corrected, follow-up inspections revealed that the defendants did not make the necessary corrections. Under the injunction, Sundial and the individual defendants cannot directly or indirectly receive, label, hold or distribute drugs at or from their facility until they take certain steps to ensure that all of these products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act and other requirements listed in the order of permanent injunction including, among

New UPenn Trial Will Evaluate Hydroxychloroquine can Befefit People Infected with COVID-19 BY A STAFF WRITER PHILADELPHIA, PA- A new trial led by the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania will evaluate whether the drug hydroxychloroquine can benefit people infected with COVID-19, as well as whether taking the drug preventatively may help people avoid infection altogether. The study, called Prevention and Treatment of COVID-19 with HCQ, is currently enrolling patients in three separate substudies, according to a report. “We know HCQ can be an effective antiviral in a lab setting, but despite recent public conversation, there is no definitive evidence it can work in humans infected with COVID-19,” said the study’s principal investigator, Ravi K. Amaravadi. “It is our hope that this trial will provide critical evidence as to whether this drug may be effective in combating the current pandemic,” said the Indian American associate professor of hematology-oncology, who has spent his career studying HCQ and related compounds. For this trial, Amaravadi is working with a multidisciplinary team at Penn, including Benjamin S. Abella, a professor of emergency medicine, and Ian D. Frank, associate chief of Infectious Diseases, as well as colleagues in pathology and laboratory medicine, cardiology, statistics, and the Abramson Cancer Center, said the report. The first sub-study of the trial will test HCQ in patients who are infected and are

other requirements, recalling their drugs, hiring qualified experts to ensure conformity with the FD&C Act and other requirements and receiving written permission from the FDA to resume operations. The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

well enough to go home, but who need to be in quarantine. The second sub-study of the trial will test HCQ in patients who are hospitalized with COVID-19 to see if it can reduce the time to discharge. Patients in this group will also be randomized into a high dose or low dose group. No one will receive a placebo. The third sub-study will test whether HCQ can work as a preventative medicine

to stop infection in health care workers at risk of exposure to COVID-19. Researchers plan to enroll 200 workers in the substudy. “The need for the third sub-study here is critical, as we try to keep the people working on the front lines of this pandemic healthy so they can continue to keep the nation’s health care infrastructure up and running,” Abella said in the report.

BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY- Doctors are beginning to see patients in their early 20s suffering from an illness that is believed to be linked to COVID-19. The illness, which causes inflammation of the blood vessels, was first noticed in children. Patients experienced fever, abdominal pain and sometimes nausea, vomiting and rashes. Meanwhile, about 36,000 deaths related to COVID-19 in the U.S. could have been prevented if stay-at-home orders were enacted a week earlier in March, according to an analysis from Columbia University. Across the U.S., more than 1.5 million COVID-19 cases and more than 93,000 deaths have been reported. Worldwide, the number of cases have surpassed 5 million. The global death toll also grew to more than 329,000.
