ASSAIC (NJ) -- The administration of mayor Jose “Joey” Torres is proposing a local law to force all bars and liquor stores to close at

Officials want to restrict the hours of operation for the city’s 154 liquor establishments that fall outside the designated hotspots in a continued effort to curb violence.

“Some of the surrounding municipalities such as Passaic and Haledon close at 2 am.” said Andre Sayegh, 6th Ward councilman, briefly discussing the ordinance.

The city’s bars and liquor stores are currently required to close at 3 am. Sayegh said the administration was attempting to bar trouble-makers from neighboring towns from coming to the city for an additional hour of revelry.

Other council members didn’t buy the explanation. “Nobody gets out of a bar at 2 am and runs to Paterson for a halfhour,” asserted Julio Tavarez, 5th Ward councilman.

ecurity in the Asia-Pacific region must depend on international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes, not on “intimidation”, US President Barack Obama said on November 15 ahead of the G20 summit here, media reported.

Addressing students in Brisbane, Obama emphasized that Asia’s security must be based on mutual alliances and big nations must not bully smaller ones, according to a BBC report.

“We believe... that any effective security order for Asia must be based not on spheres of influence, coercion or intimidation, where big nations bully the small, but on alliances for mutual security, international law and... the peaceful resolution of disputes,” Obama was quoted as saying.

He warned of the dangers posed by territorial disputes in the South China Sea, where Beijing’s perceived assertiveness has raised concern among its neighbors.

he G20 Summit concluded here on November 16 with its leaders endorsing India’s concerns over black money, while promising a new global transparency standard that will modernize international tax rules and allow automatic exchange of related information between governments to curb illicit outflow of money estimated at over $1 trillion annually.

Repatriation of black money, BRICS bank key priorities: Modi BRISBANE: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the repatriation of black money kept abroad was a key priority and called for “close coordination” on the issue during an informal meeting of the five-nation BRICS leaders here ahead of the G20. The prime minister told the leaders of Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa that “repatriation of unaccounted money kept abroad is a key priority for us”, according to tweets posted by the external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin. Modi also said that BRICS should set 2016 as the target for the inauguration of the BRICS Bank.

The ministry of external affairs, tweeting about the speech, wrote: “At BRICS meet ahead of G-20 PM @narendramodi calls for ‘Close coordination on unaccounted money kept abroad’.”

Modi, who arrived from Brisbane earlier in the day after attending the G20 summit meeting, spoke for an hour at the Allphones Arena where people wore T-shirts with Modi photos emblazoned on them.

Hundreds of fans had arrived by the “Modi Express” train from Melbourne in the morning. welcome from an over 16,000-strong gathering of Indian diaspora.

“Overwhelmed, honored and humbled. Will never forget this day,” is how Modi tweeted later.

Modi also spoke of the schemes launched by his government, including the Clean India and Make in India programs, and invited the diaspora to join in the Swachh Bharat campaign and contribute towards building toilets in their villages back home in India.

He said that today, people, including industrialists, are participating in the Clean India mission. “I salute them.” He said that on the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India in 2019, “the least we can do for Mahatma Gandhi is have a clean India”. Modi said it would give a fillip to tourism in the country, besides improving the lives of the poor.

“It took 28 years for an Indian PM to make the few hours journey to Australia. Now you will not have to wait 28 years,” he said, referring to the shared values of democracy, and the love for cricket that India and Australia share. Earlier, during his meeting with businesspersons in Queensland, Modi told them that Queensland can be an important partner in India’s development. At the breakfast meet hosted by Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, Modi proposed that businesspersons can participate in his government’s Clean Ganga program and also suggested that India can import LNG from Queensland. He said he was pleased that Queensland will be participating in ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit in 2015 to showcase its infrastructure.

Tahiliyani gave the ruling on the revision application of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the agency’s earlier plea on the same was rejected by a Special CBI Court in January, said Ashish Mehta, a lawyer who had earlier represented the petitioner in the case. The ruling could prove to be a major setback to Chavan as he will have to face trial as an accused.

he West may have severely underestimated the strength of the Islamic State (IS) Sunni radical organization, which may have raised an army of at least 200,000 fighters, a Kurdish leader has claimed.

This number is seven to eight times more than Western intelligence estimates of up to 31,500 fighters, said Fuad Hussein, the chief of staff of Kurdish President Massoud Barzani, in an exclusive interview to The Independent on November 16.

Hussein speculates that the CIA and US intelligence agencies may only have been speaking about “core” fighters in estimating the jihadis’ numbers.

The Kurdish leader said that the ability of the IS to attack on many widely separated fronts in Iraq and Syria at the same time is proof of its swelling numbers.

‘Bangladesh facing increased terror risk’ DHAKA: Bangladesh faces the risk of a substantial rise in terrorist activities in the future, according to a study by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a media report said on November 18. According to the “Global Terror Index”, almost 10,000 terrorist attacks were recorded in 2013, representing a 44 percent increase over the 2012 figures, the IEP said on its website.

These attacks have resulted in 17,958 deaths, representing a 61 percent increase over the previous year’s numbers. The study also noted that 24 countries experienced more than 50 deaths in 2013, increasing 60 percent from 15 deaths in 2012. The research also observed that the world not only witnessed intensified terror last year, but saw it spreading as well.

The Global Terror Index, launched by the IEP in 2012, ranks countries by the impact of terrorist activities, apart from analysing the economic and social dimensions associated with terrorism.

The index scores 162 countries, covering 99.6 percent of world’s population, and examines trends from 2000.

he Supreme Courtappointed Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee, which investigated the allegations of spot fixing and betting in the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has said that sidelined BCCI president N. Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was involved in betting.

The report, however, gave a clean chit to Srinivasan on both counts of spot fixing and betting.

While exonerating Meiyappan of spot fixing charges, the committee said he was involved in betting.

Meiyappan was marked as individual 1 in the report.

The committee, which marked Srinivasan as individual 13 in its report, said in its conclusions: “This individual (Srinivasan) is not involved with match fixing activity”, and “This individual was not found to be involved in scuttling the investigations in match fixing”.

However, the report said Srinivasan and the four officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were aware of the violation of the Players’ Code of Conduct by a player marked as individual 3 but they did not act against him.

But not all filmmakers succeed in using comedy to their strength, but there are exceptions like Nalan Kumarasamy, Karthik Subbaraj, who know exactly how to use it in their films without diluting the core subject.

When Vishwa slips into the shoes of his father, literally, after he’s given his job, he starts missing him and realizes all that he did for the family.

In another beautiful scene, the hero’s friend, who is tired of listening to him yap about his dead father, asks him why he only talks about his dad at night and never during the day. Vishwa, innocently, replies that he’s seen his father come home usually at night.

ill Dil is one of those misfired gun shots of masala cinema that reads like a fun fest on paper. I am sure everyone must have ROFL (Ranveer’s semi-illiterate character doesn’t know what ROFL means, teehee) while shooting and enacting the scenes and even before that there must have loads of laughter while reading the script.

In principle these unprincipled characters who live and die by the gun must have seemed interesting.

On screen Kill Dil is as flat as the midriff that Ranveer loves to flaunt whenever the script permits. Not that the script here is too particular about what goes and what doesn’t.

This is a free-for-all guns-andromance spree where Gulzar Saab’s poetry slyly meets Ranveer Singh’s buffoonery. Half-way down the narration you realize director Shaad Ali has run out of designer-cool tricks.

LAW LIKELY FOR EARLY CLOSURE OF NJ BARS

ASSAIC (NJ) -- The administration of mayor Jose “Joey” Torres is proposing a local law to force all bars and liquor stores to close at

2 am.

Officials want to restrict the hours of operation for the city’s 154 liquor establishments that fall outside the designated hotspots in a continued effort to curb violence.

“Some of the surrounding municipalities such as Passaic and Haledon close at 2 am.” said Andre Sayegh, 6th Ward councilman, briefly discussing the ordinance.

The city’s bars and liquor stores are currently required to close at 3 am. Sayegh said the administration was attempting to bar trouble-makers from neighboring towns from coming to the city for an additional hour of revelry.

Other council members didn’t buy the explanation. “Nobody gets out of a bar at 2 am and runs to Paterson for a halfhour,” asserted Julio Tavarez, 5th Ward councilman.

Tavarez said bar-goers came to the city for its after-hours which rumbles through the night until 6 am or later. “The only reason you’d come to Paterson at 2 am is

for the after-hours which is already illegal,” stated Tavarez. “What are we going to do about the after-hours?”

The council president said the city ought to address the after-hours spots that are operating illegally. Otherwise, he said, this ordinance would result in exacerbating the issue. “This is the same thing as prohibition,” said Tavarez.

He said early closing will simply open up an illegal option. “If we close earlier, the after-hours will open earlier,” concurred

Anthony Davis, 1st Ward councilman.

The ordinance will not impact alcoholserving businesses already restricted to close at 12 midnight in hotspot locations. Out of the 197 alcoholic beverage licenses, 12 are pocket licenses (not being utilized at any locations), 31 operate in hotspot locations, and 154 are scattered throughout the city.

“I see the fact that we’re open to three o’clock as a competitive advantage for our city,” said Tavarez. The city has little to offer outsiders besides drugs and crime,

said Tavarez.

“In order to build a thriving economy, the city has to figure out a way to attract outsiders, bring them to the city, and have them spend their money in local establishments”, said the councilman.

The councilman said the city had potential to create a section with bars and restaurants to build a vibrant night scene.

The city’s 2014 Master Plan also calls for the creation of a vibrant night scene.

“The City should take steps to encourage the development of the downtown as a destination retail and entertainment area.

The Downtown Commercial Business District SID should take steps to facilitate the transformation of the area into a nightlife and shopping destination,” reads an excerpt from the plan.

“If we take it away, we’re losing [a piece of our] economy,” said Davis.

“As Mayor, I encourage a healthy nightlife for our City, but not at the expense of the peace and tranquility of our residents and neighborhoods,” said Torres, citing 6,000 calls for service made last year between the hours of 2 am and 4 am.

Council members are set to discuss the ordinance during the next workshop meeting of the council.

TLANTA (GA) – Shruthilaya has been conducting Carnatic music competitions since 2005 in Atlanta.

This year, the competition was held for 12+ years on November 8 at Ivy League Academy. The day started with the invocation by the junior category prize winners of the previous year’s competition. There were 22 participants grouped in three segments based on their lessons level.

Five prizes were allotted in each category. A special prize for ‘Best performer of the day’ was introduced this year. This was won by Smruthi Balasubramaniam who also won the first place in the kriti segment.

Manodarmam, advanced and improvised singing, was one of the highlights of the competition. Anish Anand Nair won the first place in this segment.

The judges made the competition very educative and informative for many students and parents. Many parents thought it was

similar to a Carnatic Idol program, as the judges were so involved with the kids and imparting knowledge. The judges got the kids to think about this art form beyond a matter of memorizing and reciting.

The competitions have over the years inspired many kids to showcase their talents, and to get better in their singing.

ACA: Help at hand for Muslims

HICAGO (IL) -- Prominent community and business leaders from Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood and Devon Avenue corridor gathered on November 15 to discuss ways to work together and help the local residents to get health insurance through the second round of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Held at Metropolitan Asian Family Services (MAFS), the event was jointly organized by the Asian Health Coalition along with MAFS, Compassionate Care Network, and Hamdard Health and Human Services.

“Open enrollment for health insurance starts from November 15 to February 15 and our organizations are working closely with Get Covered Illinois to make sure we are able to pool our resources to maximize our reach to the South Asian and Muslim communities on the north side,” said Ranjana Paintal, Project Director at the Asian Health Coalition.

“Our team of 6 trained and certified

bilingual navigators are available to offer free and unbiased assistance to the residents to help them understand the benefits of health insurance, the available health plan options, and how they can enroll in the Marketplace or Medicaid,” she further added.

Community leaders and business owners also provided feedback and input on ways to reach the local residents to educate them about the ACA and help them in the enrollment process.

Present at the event were Nazneen Begum, navigator from MAFS, and local business and community leaders, including Rafique Shaik, executive director, South Asian Chamber of Commerce, Sher M. Rajput, founding member of Indo-American Center and Sohan Joshi, president, National Federation of Indian Association.

Also seen were Roy John of Catholic Church, Shobhana Verma, cCoordinator, Chicago Board of Election, Syed Sheeraz, marketing manager of Desi Talk, Scharif

Mohammed, founding member of IndoAmerican Center, Nand Kapoor, past president of Association of Indian in America, Madhu Patel of NRI press Club and other business owners.

Speakers included Edwin Chandrasekar from the Asian Health Coalition, Patrick Corcoran from Get Covered Illinois and Abrar Quader from CCN, who addressed topics around the need for health coverage, the essential health benefits covered by health plans under the ACA, and ways to sign up and enroll for health coverage.

Joshi thanked the joint organizers for this noble cause of helping community through ACA, and offered his services and facility to ACA team.

These encouraging remarks were also echoed by Rajput and he pledged his commitment to working closely with the organizers, through Medicaid.

Attendees enjoyed hot lunch at MAFS facility which was prepared MAFS kitchen staff.

Grand Prairie police officer was injured on November 16 evening while responding to a theft at a Kohl’s store in the 3800 block of South Carrier Parkway.

Around 6:30 pm, officers arrived to find a suspect exiting the store and getting into her car. When an officer tried to arrest her, she put the car in drive and dragged the officer through the parking lot, causing minor injuries.

Other officers followed the car and arrested the driver in Dallas on charges of aggravated assault against a police officer and enhanced theft.

The injured officer was treated at a local hospital.

Thieves use trucks to steal Newark ATMs

EWARK , NJ – The police in New Jersey’s largest city are trying to determine if there is a connection between the latest attempts to use a truck to steal an ATM. Suspects crashed a truck into a dry cleaning business on McCarter Highway around 2:30 am on November 14. The ATM became stuck under the truck and the suspects fled.

Meanwhile, thieves later crashed a truck into a nearby Applebee’s restaurant on Springfield Avenue and made off with the ATM. A stolen pickup also slammed into a Newark downtown convenience store last week and thieves made off with the cash-dispensing machine.

The event featured a night of Indiainspired jazz, with some of the world’s most renowned musicians to enable underprivileged children from India’s slums to stay in school.

“November 14th was Childrens’ Day in India, and our evening about helping children at risk. We are delighted with the turnout, the support gathered and the wonderful performances. We thank everyone who made it possible’’ says Victor Martinez-Angles, president, Salaam Bombay Children’s Fund.

Victor Martinez-Angles commenced the evening by welcoming guests and then introducing Padmini Somani, founder and director of Salaam Bombay Foundation.

Fraudulent furniture firms Schools evacuated after bomb threats to cough up $300k

EWARK (NJ) -- The owners of a number of furniture businesses have agreed to a $300,000 settlement to resolve a lawsuit filed by state officials accusing them of several consumer frauds.

The state filed suit in 2012 in Union County after receiving complaints that the businesses failed to deliver merchandise and offer refunds.

“This settlement holds the defendants accountable for their alleged violations and requires them to pay a substantial sum, which will be used toward restitution for affected customers,” Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said.

“Our consumer protections laws exist to protect against the unscrupulous practices alleged here. These businesses are required to follow our consumer protection laws going forward and we fully expect that they will do so.”

The owners--Lev Stanik of Rahway and Roman Tyger of Brooklyn--will pay $60,000 of the total $300,000 settlement but will be required to pay the remainder-$240,000--if any terms of the settlement are violated. The $60,000 will be distributed among alleged victims.

The companies involved are LaFlat, Inc., LaFlat Group, Inc., LaFurniture & Design Ltd., LaFurniture Corp., LaFurniture Group, Inc. and Tyger Furniture, also known as the TG Furniture Group.

NGLEWOOD (NJ) -- Six bomb threats--at least three called in minutes apart--prompted evacuations at seven schools and other government buildings around Bergen County on November 12.

Threats were all called in shortly after 1 pm at Hackensack High School, Garfield High School, Fort Lee High School, Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood and the Leonia Board of Education offices.

According to Bergen County Police Chief Brian Higgins, searches by state and county police K-9 teams found no signs of explosives and investigators suspected the threats were likely related.

In Leonia, a call to the borough’s school board office around 1:15 pm said there was a bomb “in the building” but didn’t specify where.

The police chief called in additional officers to assist with evacuations at the borough’s three schools as a precaution over the vague threat.

“It was very disruptive to the schools and it was very disruptive to the entire town,” the chief said. “I saw kids that looked very scared.”

In a statement, the FBI’s Newark division said it was assisting county officials.

Hackensack police Capt. Thomas Salcedo said the city’s high school received a threat by phone at 1:08 pm, leading to an evacuation.

In a Twitter message around 4:45 pm, Fort Lee police said the high school was cleared and “has been secured for the evening.”

Englewood and county police were also called to Dwight Morrow High School around 1 pm after a bomb threat there.

In Garfield, police confirmed a bomb threat was phoned into the department’s headquarters some time before noon. The city’s high school also received a bomb threat at approximately 1 pm.

The city’s police station has been targeted in previous threats, including one last month where a male caller claimed he would “show up at police headquarters and kill everyone inside by shooting them”.

EW YORK -- A Sikh student at Hofstra University has filed a lawsuit against the United States Army for barring him from the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), a college-based program for training future commissioned officers in the armed forces.

Court documents said Iknoor Singh had claimed that the service refused to grant him a religious accommodation that would allow him to enlist in his school’s ROTC program without shaving his beard, cutting his hair and removing his turban.

When he requested a religious exemption from the military’s grooming policies to enlist as an ROTC cadet in April 2013, his request was first denied on the grounds that his non-compliance would have “an adverse impact on the Army’s readiness, unit cohesion, standards, health, safety, or discipline”.

The Army subsequently adjusted its decision, saying Singh could only seek an exemption after he was enlisted as a cadet, creating a catch-22 in which Singh would have to violate his faith to be able to apply for a religious accommodation.

“I couldn’t believe the military was asking me to make the impossible decision of choosing between the country I love and my faith,” Singh said in a blog post on the website of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

The lawsuit, filed jointly by the ACLU and United Sikhs, a UNaffiliated non-profit organization, claims that the Army’s denial of religious exemption violated the religious freedom restoration Act. The case was filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

As a practicing Sikh, Singh maintains certain articles of faith, including ‘kesh,’ which the court documents describe as “rooted in the belief that allowing hair to grow naturally is a sign of respect toward the perfection of God’s creation.

There have been two drawings this year where the jackpot climbed above $1 million — one in April and one in October.

SHANTI, JOURNEY OF PEACE, ENRAPTURES ATLANTA

tlanta (GA) – Shanti--A Journey o f Pe a c e , t h e p i o n e e r i n g multimedia musical experience c o n c e i ve d c o m p o s e d a n d directed by Cincinnati-based composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran, enraptured a capacity crowd at Robert Ferst Center at Georgia Tech.

Shanti is in its 10th year of presentation and Atlanta was the chosen city for its tenth performance which brought together 200 talented participants from diverse cultures in Atlanta.

This seemingly effortless and smooth flowing program encapsulating the evolution of a 5,000-year-old civilization, started with an invocation to Ganga, a suite of six movements depicting the human mind’s enquiry into the very idea of existence.

The second depiction, Faiths, was a suite in five movements outlining plurality of faiths linked through mystery.

The third depiction, the boundless human spirit, traced the achievements of the human spirit in a state of internal peace.

The fourth depiction, Ashanti, was a musical interpretation in three movements of the state of unrest or lack of peace.

This was followed by Reflection a musical narrative of how the human spirit relates to existence and a vision of future and the celebration of the spirit of re-creation and rejuvenation, dance of creation.

The finale was an expression of a vision for the future which offers nothing but peace and joy.

This dance drama comes at a time

when the world is torn apart with growing violence everywhere making it all the more appealing and apt. The program received a standing ovation from a mesmerized audience.

The orchestra comprised musicians from various symphony groups, faculties from major universities and singers from operas.

Earlier in the evening, the program opened to a brief introduction of Kannikeswaran, conductor Huu Mai and acknowledgment of several sponsors, institutions, departments and groups such as Raksha (Aparna Bhattacharya), Deloitte, and Veena & Ajay Madwesh who have been instrumental in making this show happen in Atlanta.

IACA provided support along the way as well. Consul-General of India in Atlanta, Ambassador Ajit Kumar, who was chief guest at the event, released the CD recording of ‘Sacred Choral Chants’.

The program was a collective effort of several acclaimed personalities in the cultural genre.

THey included Payal De (Odissi), Uma Murlidhar (Planet U Performing Arts), Sasiskala Penumarthi (Kuchipudi) Padmaja and Siddharth Kelam (Bharata Natyam, Kalaivani Dance Academy), Bhavini Rajan (Samarpanam School of Fine Arts), Gayatri Subramanian (KA Academy of Music and Dance) Kumud Sawla (Kathak, Nritya Natya Kala Bharathi) and Anupa Thakurta (Deeksha School of Performing Arts).

The Atlanta performance of Shanti, like the other previous performances, is a grassroots movement. Composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran has been traveling for several weekends to Atlanta to teach the music score of Shanti to the newlyassembled group of singers.

The singers varied in musical abilities and varied from trained professionals to

casual singers. This group of 80 singers then rehearsed with a western choir at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Metropolitan Atlanta North in the weeks leading up to the performance under the baton of the conductor Huu Mai. “Watching the program take shape from its infancy to watching the final performance at close quarters was extremely fulfilling!” said Ajay Madwesh, who had sung earlier in Shanti in 2008.

Kannikeswaran, who also wrote the script, narration and musical score for Shanti, is a recent recipient of the prestigious McKnight Visiting Artist Fellowship (Minnesota) and the Ohio Heritage Fellowship.

His projects are consistent with building community by emphasizing peaceful coexistence of diverse cultures through epic representation of 5,000-yearold cultural history of India via music, dance and visuals.
