s John Kerry’s India visit began on July 30, a raft of crises consume American diplomacy. By contrast, US-India relations are at a moment of opportunity, but the U.S. Secretary of State faces challenges in New Delhi that are significant in their own way.

For one thing, after a decade of disengagement with Narendra Modi, Washington is eager to make a fresh start. The U.S. is sending three cabinet secretaries to India in quick succession — Kerry (State), Penny Pritzker (Commerce), and Chuck Hagel (Defense) — and

Washington is preparing to host Modi himself in September. From the U.S. perspective, Modi’s government offers a welcome respite from years of perceived strategic and economic drift under UPA-2.

But Kerry’s visit is also very well timed: First, the NDA government has been in office for nearly two months. Modi has met Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, among others, so it is high time for cabinet-level U.S. engagement.

he United States aviation agency has lifted a ban on the country’s flights to an airport in Israel’s western port city of Tel Aviv late on July 23.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) instituted a 24-hour flight prohibition Tuesday after a rocket landed roughly one mile from the airport.

arliament was disrupted on July 30 as the opposition demanded a debate on the reported bugging at Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s Delhi residence. As soon as the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha met for the day, members from the Congress were on their feet demanding suspension of question hour to take up a debate on the issue.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has called media reports about a listening device being found at his residence as baseless.

Speaking to reporters outside parliament here, the minister said: “I have clearly told you that whatever you are writing and showing is totally false and baseless and there is no truth in it. First it was said that it was my Mumbai residence and now

it is the Delhi residence (which is bugged) and there is no truth in it.”

In the Rajya Sabha, the opposition, dissatisfied with the minister’s reply, kept pressing for adjourning the question hour. In the ruckus, the house was first adjourned for 15 minutes, and then till noon. When the house reassembled, the issue was raised again by Congress leader Anand Sharma.

“Government is tapping phones on a massive scale. Who authorized this? We want a thorough probe,” Sharma said.

While Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien insisted that the zero hour should be taken up, opposition members kept pressing for their demand. Kurien then adjourned the house for 10 minutes.

Filing the plea, advocate R.P. Luthra said: “The information disclosed by Justice Katju clearly discloses the commission of various cognizable offenses including the offenses covered under prevention of corruption act.”

Former Supreme Court judge Katju has alleged that three former chief justices of India — Justice R.C. Lahoti, Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice K.G. Balakrishnan — made “improper compromises” and succumbed to political pressure during the UPA rule from one of its allies, apparently the DMK, in allowing the judge to continue despite an “adverse” Intelligence Bureau (IB) report on allegations of corruption against him.

The IRCTC was providing food for Maharashtra Sadan.

The PIL said: “The action of the Shiv Sena MPs with the fasting Muslim supervisor was uncalled for and needed to be dealt with a strict action by party chief Udhav Thackeray.”

n innumerable urban and rural centers, Muslims poured into mosques and large open grounds and offered Eid prayers to mark the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Eid prayers were also offered at the 17th century Taj Mahal.

Barring the Kashmir Valley, where youths clashed with security forces for a few hours, the day was celebrated peacefully and with visible joy all across the country.

With over 170 million Muslims, India is home to the third largest Islamic population in the world after Indonesia and Pakistan.

Modi, who became prime minister only two months ago, greeted the nation on the occasion. “May this auspicious day strengthen the bonds of peace, unity and brotherhood across our nation,” he said.

Islamic scholars underlined the importance of Eid. “It is a festival of peace and love. The sacrosanct occasion teaches people to subside the feeling of hatred and discrimination,” Ashraf Usmani of Darul Uloom, India’s most influential Islamic seminary, told IANS. Maulana Mufti Mukarram, the Naib Imam of Fatehpuri mosque in Old Delhi, said: “It is an occasion when everyone irrespective of religious or social barriers must endorse the message of peace and love.”

Attired in new clothes and wearing skull caps, men and children thronged Eidgahs and mosques for namaz. In many mosques, special prayers were held for peace in Gaza, where Israel’s targeting of the Hamas has left hundreds, mainly civilians, dead.

and Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. After the morning prayers, sweets were exchanged with friends and families. Muslims embraced one another with greetings of “Eid Mubarak”.

Guests were treated to ‘sheer khorma’ (special sweet made of vermicelli, milk and dry fruits) and other dishes. The festivities extended to the India-Pakistan border in Punjab where Pakistan Rangers offered sweets to the Border Security Force. The Indians and Pakistanis then hugged one another at the bor-

der gates. Muslims across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh celebrated Eid with religious fervour and gaiety — and with prayers for the dead in Gaza. Many families celebrated with simplicity in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Every Muslim family paid Fitra or charity (`80 to `100) on behalf of each member as per the Islamic rules so that the poor can also celebrate the festival.

The Kashmir Valley celebrated Eid with the usual religious fervour after the morning festivities were marred by clashes between youths and security forces.

Once peace returned to the valley in the afternoon, people exchanged Eid greetings with families and friends in Srinagar and all major towns in the valley. Children burst firecrackers. The serenity was visible in Uttar Pradesh too. However, security forces kept a vigil in both Saharanpur and Rampur which have been hit by communal violence. In Kerala, where Muslims account for a quarter of the 33 million people, the biggest gatherings took place in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur. In most cities, the prayers took place in grounds and stadiums.

Clawson, apparently confused by their Indian surnames and skin tone

London-based Neel Mukherjee was among 2014 longlist or Man Bookers ‘Dozen’ for his novel “The Lives of Others” which was published in May this year, a Man Booker statement Wednesday said.

As many as 154 books were entered for this year’s prize by British publishers, of which 44 titles were by authors who are now eligible under the new rule changes.

The 2014 long list of 13 novels includes American writer Joshua Ferris’ “To Rise Again at a Decent Hour”, Australian writer Richard Flanagan’s “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” and Irish writer Niall Williams’ “History of the Rain”.

Mukherjee’s first novel, “Past Continuous” came in 2009 and was chosen as a joint winner of the Vodafone-Crossword Award, a noted literary award for writing in English, for best novel of 2008

The shortlist of six books will be announced September 9, while the winner would be decided October 14 in London.

The Chair of the judges, AC Grayling, said: “The judges were impressed by the high quality of writing and the range of issues tackled - from 1066 to the future, from a PoW camp in Thailand, to a dentist’s chair in Manhattan; from the funny to the deeply serious, sometimes in the same book.”

The literary award, established in 1969, has for the first time been opened up to the writers of any nationality, writing originally in English and published in Britain.

The 50,000 pounds literary prize is awarded each year for the best original novel, written in the English language.

Previously, the prize was open to authors from Britain & Commonwealth, Ireland and Zimbabwe.

The Man Booker Prize is sponsored by Man Group, a leading investment management firm.

Eleanor Catton won the 2013 Man Booker Prize for her novel “The Luminaries” last year.

The previous noted winners of the award include many of the literary trailblazers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries like Salman Rushdie, Hilary Mantel, Iris Murdoch and Peter Carey.

Doctor indicted for running Baby’s death to be independently probed illegal prescription racket IANS, LONDON

court in the United States has indicted an Indian-origin doctor of illegally running a prescription racket that led to the death of one patient and harming the health of many others, media reported.

A jury in the federal court of Alexandria, Virginia, concluded that Nibedita Mohanty illegally prescribed medicines under the guise of treating chronic patient.

Mohanty prescribed narcotic pills to patients who had been jailed for

selling controlled substances and even to someone who, she was explicitly told, would sell the drugs to pay another patient’s bond, the Washington Post reported citing the indictment. Despite being warned by another doctor about a patient who had painkiller addiction, she continued to prescribe OxyContin, Percocet and Dilaudid to that patient.

The patient was hospitalized with drug overdose but Mohanty discharged her and less than two weeks later, prescribed more painkillers, the Post report said. A day later, the patient died of oxydone overdose.

n independent probe has been ordered into the case of an Indian-origin woman who battered her three-year-old son to death in Scotland, media reported.

The announcement came hours after Rosdeep Adekoya, 35, admitted to assaulting and killing her son, Mikaeel Kular, in their Edinburgh home and hiding his body in a bush behind her sister’s house 25 miles away in a forest area in Fife county, the Fife Today reported on July 25.

The Fife council in Scotland said that an independent case review will be done into the incident.

The joint chief officers group of Fife and City of Edinburgh has decided to conduct a significant case review following the tragic death of Mikaeel Kular, the council said.

While announcing the move, John Myles, independent chairman of Fife Child Protection Committee said: “It (enquiry) will be led independently and will take place in two phases. The first phase will look at information available from files, records, and policies and procedures that were in place before Mikaeel’s death. Work on this phase has already started.”

“Phase two will take into account any new information that has come to light during the criminal proceedings and will involve interviews with relevant staff,” Myles added.

Adekoya also pleaded guilty of lying to the police that her son had gone missing, sparking a massive search by rescuers and emergency teams, before the High Court in Edinburgh on July 25.

t least 13 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured early on July 30 when Israeli artillery fire hit a school used as a shelter by displaced people in the northern Gaza Strip town of Jabaliya, as the toll in the coastal enclave in the ongoing offensive rose to 1,253.

Health Ministry spokesman in Gaza Ashraf al-Qedra said hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip have so far received the bodies of 13 people and dozens of injured civilians who sheltered at a UN-run school in Jabaliya town, Xinhua reported. Earlier, al-Qedra had said that 20 people were killed. Israel has not commented on the incident so far.

Indian nurses caught in conflict in Libya NEW DELHI/TRIPOLI: In a near replay of the incidents in Iraq, large numbers of Indian nurses are caught in spiralling violence in Libya, where rival militant groups seek to control the capital’s international airport, and have approached the Indian mission for help and even evacuation.

Over the last two weeks, the north African country has plunged into chaos following deadly clashes between government forces and Islamist militants in the capital Tripoli and Benghazi where more than 150 people, most of them civilians, have been killed. hooters and wrestlers put on a stunning show as India grabbed nine medals, including three gold medals, in what was their best show so far in the 2014 Commonwealth Games here on July 29.

Till July 30 morning (IST), India had won 10 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals overall.

On July 29, Sushil Kumar led the charge as Indian wrestlers winning three of the five gold medals on offer at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC).

Amit Kumar and teenager Vinesh Phogat also bagged gold medals while Rajeev Tomar settled for the silver medal. The three gold medals also lifted India to fifth position in the medal’s standings.

YRF Entertainment, the international arm of Indian production giant Yash Raj Films announced that it will remake the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Sujoy Ghosh-directed and Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani for international audiences as Deity. The remake will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fame, while Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries) and Richard Regen (Tehran), have scripted the adaptation. Deity is a thriller about an American woman who goes to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. As she gets closer to the truth, she finds herself at the centre of a dan-

The number of times the word ‘kick’ kicks into this heady cocktail of comedy and action, you’d think there’s no word in the dictionary that gives our hero a greater kick than...well, kick. So, brace yourself for a hero who likes to get his kick in the unlikeliest ways. And a hero, who is as unpredictable, whimsical, mischievous and intimidating as Salman Khan.

While writing his character in Kick, co-writers Chetan Bhagat, Rajat Arora and Sajid Nadiadwala had to consider Salman’s fan following carefully. This time Salman comes across as far stronger aggressive and in-your-face character than he did in his recent films like Bodyguard and Jai Ho. Salman sinks into the dual role of the prankster Devi and his Robin Hood doppelganger Devil with the smirky relish that only Salman knows how to muster and master. The superhero’s mask when it goes on is sure to bring the house down. ‘Debutant’ director (he handles the cast and characters and the plot like a veteran) Sajid Nadiadwala has set the core-action, a catand-mouse chase plan featuring the dare...um...Devil hero and a determined cop (Hooda, in command), in the striking ambience of Warsaw. It’s an exhilarating set-up.

The stunts spiral splendidly into a climax. The stunts are admirably executed and are superior to what we saw in Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3.

Nadiadwala spares no expenses to ensure that his super-hero flick gets going from the first frame. The spectacle is never over-the-top.

Playing the karmic crusader comes easily to Salman Khan who likes to see himself being...well... human in real and on screen. Cleverly, the plot weaves the superstar’s real and reel persona into a precocious pastiche where you never know where the reel Salman ends and where the fictional begins.

The plot is designed as a flashback conversation between Jacqueline Fernandez and Randeep Hooda who could have been strangers in a train if only they were not engaged to get married.

The mixture of the real and the reel gambols through a maze of confidently executed episodes. Not all of them work, though. The drunken buddy-buddy bonding sequence between Hooda and Salman falls flat as Hooda goes progressively over the top. Hooda is otherwise very much in control

over his character and plays off against Salman very effectively.

Jacqueline Fernandez has bravely spoken her own Hindi lines. We will ignore her linguistic efforts and focus on how gorgeous she looks while dancing with and for Salman in Jumme ki raat. This film definitely marks her coming of age.

However, the biggest hero besides Salman is Ayanka Bose’s cinematography which makes Salman, Warsaw, Mumbai and Jacqueline look fetching without resorting to accessorized illumination. The color tones in the frames are eye-catching without going the garish way. In his directorial debut Sajid Nadiadwala has opted for restrain where he could have unleashed a typhoon of spectacle.

The film looks and feels right. Kick is super-slick but never in a ‘showoffy’ way. It is an out-and-out Salman vehicle but there’s room for other interesting characters.

Fawad has ‘Khoobsurat’ experience with Sonam MUMBAI: Pakistani actor Fawad Khan’s experience of working in India was very good and he credits his Khoobsurat co-star Sonam Kapoor for it. “She is a great person and I enjoyed working with her. The environment on the sets was very homely and I didn’t face any problem at any stage,” Fawad said here on July 27 on the sets of Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega.

“I didn’t face any problem in communicating with the people on the sets and a lot of credit goes to her (Sonam) for that,” he added.

Aishwarya Rai adds glamor to CWG opener GLASGOW: Indian actor Aishwarya Rai attended the opening ceremony of the 20th Commonwealth Games in Scotland’s largest city as the Longines Ambassador of Elegance.

Aishwarya, who was dressed in a black coat with her lustrous locks tied in a high bun, was accompanied at the event last week by Longines President Walter von Kanel.

The Swiss luxury watch brand Longines is the Official Timekeeper and Watch of the CWG, being held here July 23-Aug 3, and it provides more than 190 timekeepers and 122 tonnes of equipment to support the event. The Official Watch of Glasgow 2014 is a chronograph in steel from the Conquest Classic collection. Longines is also the presenting partner of the gymnastics competitions.

‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ not my real life story: Kareena MUMBAI: Kareena Kapoor and Salman Khan’s next Bajrangi Bhaijaan is about a Brahmin girl and Muslim boy, but the former says that it has no correlation with her personal life. “The film is going on floors in October. It’s a story of a Muslim guy and Brahmin girl. It’s got nothing do with my personal life, but it’s a beautiful human story,” Kareena, who is married to Saif Ali Khan, told IANS. “I think it will be Salman’s career’s best film. It will have Salman in a completely different light altogether and it’s a very special film. It’s special because Salman Khan is producing himself and I am honored I am with him. Set in the backdrop of the 1984 antiSikh riots, the film is a true story of a family who survived the riots on the night of October 31 that year.

“My next film Jaane Kyon is based on 1984 riots. I have shot half of it and now waiting for my beard to grow, so I can start shooting again,” Virr told IANS. So far he has done fun-filled movies like Delhi Belly, Go Goa Gone as well as Revolver Rani, but for him Jaane Kyon is the toughest.

“It’s the toughest film so far because I had to lose weight and look much leaner for the film. I had lost nine kgs for the film,” said the actor.

NJ SWAMINARAYAN TEMPLE WILL OPEN ON AUGUST 16 R

16-yr-old detonates homemade bomb

OBBINSVILLE (NJ) -- The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is set to inaugurate its sixth traditional stone temple in North America, this time in Robbinsville, New Jersey.

The mandir has been built according to the Hindu Shilpa Shastras or ancient architectural texts following a tradition of temple building through the millennia.

Inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the intricately handcarved shrine is built to last thousands of years. It stands as a testament to the dedication, service and devotion of the organization’s many volunteers and wellwishers.

The inauguration of this traditional stone mandir marks the completion of the second phase of the Swaminarayan Akshardham complex that is currently planned for the site. The mandir is 134 feet long and 87 feet wide, comprising of 108 pillars and three garbha gruhs or inner sanctums.

The entire mandir has been covered by a permanent structure to increase the structure’s life and accommodate darshan and worship during the region’s harsh winter. The Mandir is made entirely of Italian marble and was completed in three years at a cost of $18 million.

This was made possible by the dedication and selfless service of professional volunteers, including engineers and architects, who helped to minimize the cost of the mandir.

The inauguration ceremonies will begin with a Vedic Yagna or sacrificial ritual for world peace and will be followed by a Shobha Yatra or celebratory procession of the deities. The inauguration itself will take place according to traditional Vedic rituals in the Murti Pratishta ceremony on August 9 and 10.

Finally, the Mandir complex will be opened to the community and public on August 16 at a special dedication ceremony hosting community leaders from within the Indian-American community and from

around the region.

His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj will be traveling to New Jersey to be part of the inauguration ceremonies and festivities.

He will be joined by a delegation of 40 sadhus and priests from India to officiate the rituals of the installation.

In order to add to this joyous occasion, local devotees will be joined by devotees from around the world who have made their own arrangements to attend the festivities. After its opening, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Robbinsville, NJ, like other BAPS temples, will not only be a center of Hindu liturgy, but will also provide a spiritual haven for aspirants and devotees in their local community.

The idols of the chief deities of the mandir, Bhagwan Swaminarayan along with his ideal devotee, Gunatitanand Swami, will be installed in the mandir’s central shrine. The murtis of other Hindu deities, including Radha Krishna Dev, SitaRam Dev, Shiv-Parvati Dev, Hanumanji and Ganeshji, too will be installed within the mandir’s shrines.

The mandir will help preserve Hindu rituals, beliefs, and Indian traditions for generations to come.

The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha inaugurated its first traditional stone

temple (and the first traditional stone Hindu Mandir in North America) in Stafford, Texas, a suburb of Houston, on July 25, 2004. This milestone was followed one month later by the opening of the second such temple in Bartlett, Illinois outside of Chicago.

In the summer of 2007, traditional stone temples were inaugurated in Lilburn, Georgia near Atlanta and in Toronto, Canada followed by Chino Hills, California in December of 2012. These mandirs benefit the Indian-American community by providing a center for cultural and moral preservation.

In 2013, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Lilburn, GA hosted a spiritual and cultural convention that was attended by nearly 10,000 children and youth from centers in North America. These mandirs also host a variety of activities for children and youth on a weekly basis, including music, language, education and career preparation, and Hinduism classes.

In addition to the benefit for the IndianAmerican community, these mandirs also serve as beacons of cultural tolerance and awareness for local community members interested in learning about different communities, religions, and ethnicities.

These mandirs have been appreciated and welcomed as significant additions to the cultural, religious, and architectural landscapes of local communities around North America. Today, the organization has over 90 mandirs in North America, of which six are traditional stone-carved, and over 1100 mandirs worldwide.

The inauguration of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Robbinsville, New Jersey promises to be a historic event for the BAPS community and the wider Indian-American community. The support and cooperation of local township officials has played a central role in the successful completion of this mandir.

Indian-American CEO faces 20-yr jail term for paying kickbacks

HINO (CA) -- The CEO of two publicly-traded companies in the US, Shailesh Shah, has been convicted on charges that he paid kickbacks in return for purchases of his companies’ stock, and could be jailed for 20 years.

Shah, 48, of Chino, Calif., has pleaded guilty before US District Judge Richard Stearns to two counts of mail fraud and two counts of wire fraud, according to a press release issued by the FBI. His sentencing is scheduled for October 23.

Shah was the president and chief executive officer of SOHM, Inc. and Costas, Inc. He agreed to pay secret kickbacks to an investment fund representative in exchange for having the investment fund buy stock in these two companies.

The kickbacks were concealed through

the use of sham consulting agreements and other fraudulent documents. In actuality, however, and unbeknownst to Shah, the purported investment fund representative was an undercover FBI agent.

Apart from Shah, also charged in May was Sandip Shah, 40, in an indictment with nine counts of wire fraud. Sandip Shah is also from Chino, California, and was previously arrested on February 27.

Sandip Shah was in the business of promoting penny stocks and assisting public companies in finding sources of funding. He agreed to introduce the investment fund representative to executives of publicly traded companies so that those executives could enter into the kickback arrangement.

In exchange for the introductions and for facilitating the kickback arrangements as they continued, Sandip Shah accepted

a portion of the kickbacks paid by the executives. What the defendants did not know was that the purported investment fund representative was actually an undercover agent.

The plea by Shailesh Shah follows a lengthy investigation focusing on preventing fraud in the microcap stock markets. Microcap companies are small publicly-traded companies whose stock often trades at pennies per share.

Shah faces 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gain or loss on each count.

This case was brought in coordination with President Barack Obama’s Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, to wage an aggressive, coordinated and proactive effort to investigate and prosecute financial crimes.

IVERDALE (GA) -- Clayton County police say a 16-year-old teen set off a homemade bomb at his Riverdale home on the night of July 23.

The teen was arrested and charged with possession/manufacture of a destructive device, reckless conduct and explosive mMaterials. He was released to his parents.

According to the police, the teen detonated a homemade explosive made from common household chemicals.

It happened on the 800 block of Cedar Bend Ct. just before 10 pm. It was the teen’s mother who called the police after she noticed smoke and fire.

As a precaution, residents who live nearby were evacuated. Bomb sniffing dogs were also brought in. No one was hurt.

Welfare fraud charges against three women

TLANTIC COUNTY, NJ — A Vineland resident who is accused of impersonating an FBI agent while being investigated for welfare fraud was one of the three women indicted on July 24 for allegedly stealing benefits.

Zainab Malik, 40, is charged with collecting $72,784 in food stamps, bus passes and child care services by showing a fake birth certificate and a phony social security card, according to Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain.

Malik was attending a technical school at which she was not registered.

While being investigated by the prosecutor’s office, Malik claimed she worked for the FBI, the prosecutor’s office alleged.

She is charged with theft, four counts of displaying false government documents and one count of impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Two other women of Atlantic City are also facing charges.

Shannin Harrell, 32, allegedly stole $15,751 in food stamps and other benefits by lying about her income.

Evonda Valentine, 47, stole $18,756 in assistance and food stamps by claiming children as dependents who didn’t live with her.

Harrell and Valentine are each charged with third-degree theft.

They face three to five years in prison if convicted.

Chivukula honors mridangam exponent

RENTON (NJ) -- Upendra Chivukula, deputy speaker of the New Jersey State Assembly, recently honored eminent South Indian classical instrumentalist and mridangam exponent Tiruvarur Va i d y a n a t h a n w i t h t h e a s s e m b l y proclamation for his service and promoting Carnatic music abroad.

The citation said Vaidyanathan, born in a family of percussionists, began training at the age of six from his grandfather and uncle and through his inherent sense of rhythm, disciplined practice and urge to excel in the art of playing mridangam were showcased in concerts even when he was a high-school student.

Wrong-way mishap claims life of 2 Indian women

AN LEANDRO (CA) — Indian American Falguni Shah, 38, who was known for her catering of delicious Indian food at many community events, was killed in a wrongway accident along with a family member on 210 Freeway in Rancho Cucamonga, CA in the early hours of July 20.

A suspected drunk driver, who was driving a dark-colored Hyundai Elantra in the carpool lane on the wrong side of the freeway, collided head-on with Falguni’s vehicle, a silver sedan, at a speed of 120 mph.

Falguni was a passenger in the rear seat of the car, which was occupied by three of her relatives. Also killed in the crash was Falguni’s sister-in-law Veena Shah, 42, from London, who had been sitting next to her.

Falguni and Veena were pronounced dead at the scene and the police believe

Falguni, a resident of Fontana, CA, is survived by her husband Dharmesh and two children — a daughter, 9, and son, 19.

Two other people — the driver and the front passenger of the vehicle — were hospitalized with major injuries after the accident, which happened at around 2:22 am. The driver of Falguni’s car was identified as her cousin Nitin Shah, 60, and the front passenger was his wife, 56-year-old Jyotsna Shah, both residents of Chino Hills, CA. The crash occurred as they were returning home from a family reunion at their cousin Bharat’s house in Burbank, CA. Falguni’s husband Dharmesh had left with other family members in a separate car around five minutes before Falguni. He had seen the suspected drunk driver coming from the wrong lane but ignored him.

The wrong-way driver was identified as Mack Jaramillo, 28, of La Habra, and was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol. He was also declared dead at the scene.

ELAWARE -- A 21-year-old Delaware man is facing charges in the death of a bicyclist on July 26.

Rahul Patel of Newark was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of the speeding car westbound on Del. 273.

The car then traveled off the roadway onto the center median, rotated counter-clockwise and continued into the intersection, where the passenger side hit an adult male bicyclist who was heading through the intersection.

Sgt. Paul G. Shavack told local media that the bicyclist sustained multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was to be released after he was positively identified and his next of kin were notified. Patel was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

EW YORK -- A suspected Al Qaeda terrorist linked to the New York City subway bombing plotters will act as his own lawyer at his upcoming trial in the Brooklyn Federal Court.

Abid Naseer, 28, a Pakistani man living in the UK, was allegedly part of an international conspiracy tasked with carrying out terrorist attacks in the UK, the US and Norway. He was extradited in January last year. He was among a group of men arrested by the British authorities in April 2009 and accused of being part of a terrorist cell inside the country.

According to reports, Naseer shared the same email account and Al Qaeda handle as the three Queens men— Najibullah Zazi, Zarein Ahmedzay and Adis Medunjanin—who were ready to detonate backpack bombs in crowded subway trains in Manhattan.

Naseer was allegedly going to carry out an attack—referred to in code as ‘the wedding’—in Manchester in 2009.

Top court rules against immigrant kids

ASHINGTON, D.C. — A divided Supreme Court ruled recently that immigrant children who waited for years with their parents to obtain visas still have to go to the back of the line when they turn 21.

In a 5-4 decision, the justices sided with the Obama administration in finding that immigration laws offer relief only to a tiny percentage of children who “age out” of the system. The majority no longer qualify for the immigration status granted to minors.

The case involved Rosalina Cuellar de Osorio, a Salvadoran immigrant who was in line for a visa along with her 13-year-old son. But after years of waiting, her son turned 21 and government officials said he no longer qualified as an eligible child. He was placed at the back of the line, resulting in a wait of several more years.

The family won its challenge before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but the Supreme Court reversed that decision.

Writing for the majority, Justice Elena Kagan said the law directed immigration officials to automatically convert a 21-year-old child’s petition into a category for adults. The only immigrants who can maintain their spot in line are those who would already qualify under the valid new adult category.

Because approving families for green cards can take years, several thousand immigrant children age out of the system each year, according to government estimates. Congress tried to fix the problem in 2002 when it passed the Child Status Protection Act. The law allows aged-out children to retain their child status longer or qualify for a valid adult category and keep their initial priority date.

But appeals courts have split over whether the law applies to all children or only those in specific categories.

xpressing anguish at the arrest of 50 Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy on July 29, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up the issue with the island nation through diplomatic channels.

In a letter to Modi, the text of which was released to the media here, Jayalalithaa said: “I once again request you to immediately take up the issue of frequent apprehension of our fishermen and their boats by the Sri Lankan Navy at the highest diplomatic levels so as to secure the immediate release of all the 93 fishermen from Tamil

TN school fire: Life term for owner CHENNAI: A court in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur on July 30 sentenced the owner of a school in Kumbakonam, where 94 children perished in a fire in 2004, to a life term in prison. Nine people were sentenced to varied terms in jail, while 11 others were acquitted. The eight school and government officials were jailed for five years and an engineer for two years.

The judgment comes a decade after the accident at the Sri Krishna Middle School July 16, 2004, in which 18 other children were injured. According to the judgment, school owner Palanisamy was sentenced to a life term, and 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment. His wife Saraswathi was sentenced to a five-year term.

T

he United States Geological Survey (USGS) has developed the most detailed map of Mars to date, which includes topographic and thermal information as well as data on the properties of the Martian surface.

Images captured by the 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft orbiting the Red Planet enabled the development of the new map, which improves previous versions dating back to the 1970s and the 1980s, the USGS stated on its website.

The map uses data of the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS), a system that captures thermal emission images, based on the infrared radiation spectrum installed on the Odyssey.

Robin Fergason from the USGS Astrogeology Science Center in Arizona led the project in collaboration with researchers of the Mars Space Center of Arizona State University.

“We used more than 20,000 THEMIS nighttime temperature images to generate the highest resolution surface property map of Mars ever created,” Fergason

said in a statement on the website of Arizona State University.

“Now these data are freely available to researchers and the public alike,” said the scientist.

She explained that “darker areas in the map are cooler at night, have a lower thermal inertia, and likely contain fine particles such as dust, silt, or fine sand”.

“The brighter regions are warmer and have surfaces with higher thermal inertia. These consist perhaps of coarser sand, surface crusts, rock fragments, bedrock, or combinations of these materials,” she added.

Antarctic fish might survive ocean warming: Study

WELLINGTON: A species of Antarctic fish might be able to survive the predicted warming of its native waters over the next century if the warming is gradual enough, according to a New Zealand scientist. University of Canterbury researcher Charlotte Austin tested how the emerald rock cod adapted to warmer waters after being removed from its minus 1.9-degree centigrade habitat below the Antarctic ice, Xinhua reported.

The fish were able to fully recover from short exposures to temperatures up to 6 degrees centigrade, but long periods of time at 4 degrees centigrade was fatal, Austin said in a statement. However, if the temperature increase was gradual, all fish tested survived the 56 days

of the experiment at 3 degrees centigrade and were able to successfully digest food, a vital physiological process for survival, she said.

The results provide some optimism for the survival of this species if ocean temperature in Antarctic does not exceed the predicted increase of 2 degrees centigrade over the next century.

n the era of unprecedented quantities of information via web, mobile and other internet-based operations, here comes a new device that can help neuroscientists make sense of the “big data”. Called Thunder — a library of tools developed at the Maryland-based nonprofit Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus — it speeds the analysis of data sets that are so large and complex they would take days or weeks to analyze on a single workstation, if a single workstation could do it at all.

Researchers claim they have used Thunder to quickly find patterns in high-resolution images collected

from the brains of active zebrafish and mice with multiple imaging techniques.

“Using Thunder, we analysed images of the brain in minutes, interacting with and revising analyses without the lengthy delays associated with previous methods,” said Janelia Research Campus

“Earth and its inhabitants were incredibly fortunate that the 2012 eruption happened when it did and not one week earlier,” Baker added.
