Jen Johnson, vice president, corporate communications, of Kohl’s Department Stores, has sent an email to Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who spearheaded the protest.

The mail read: “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Kohl’s has removed the product in question from our site. We sincerely apologize to you, the Hindu community and our customers for any unintended offense this product may have caused.”

The US Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania announced on April 6 that Jeffrey Allen Burgess, 56, has been sentenced in federal court to three years’ probation for a 1996 attack on Ankur Mehta.

Burgess will have to go through four months of home detention; continued alcohol treatment through Pyramid Healthcare, Inc., or as directed by the U.S. Probation Office; 50 hours of community service; full participation in a restorative justice program administered

United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer imposed the sentence on Burgess who attacked Mehta, and broke his jaw at a South Hills Red Robin restaurant because he thought Mehta was an Arab.

Burgess was sitting at the next table at the Red Robin and began shouting expletives at the Indian-American, calling him a “sand n….r” while Mehta was wearing earphones and listening to music while playing on his computer tablet.

Burgess is also reported to have said that since President Trump had become President, he no longer had to “put up with you people.”

The restaurant manager called 911 after Burgess punched Mehta and kept hitting him in the head, neck and throat.

FBI raids Trump lawyer’s office

Trump slams the move as a ‘disgraceful situation’ and ‘an attack on our country’ as FBI seizes Stormy Daniels’ documents IANS, NEW YORK

T

he FBI this week raided the office of President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen and seized documents related to porn star Stormy Daniels along with other bank records, the media reported.

Cohen is a longtime ally of the President, and admitted earlier this year to setting up a limited liability company in 2016 to pay Daniels, who alleges she had an affair with Trump in 2006 that the White House has denied.

His attorney Stephen Ryan told CNN that the US Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York had executed “a series of search warrants” including at his office, and “seized the privileged communications” between Cohen and his clients.

The raids included the Loew’s Regency hotel where Cohen has been staying. There were approximately a dozen Federal Bureau of Investigation agents involved.

‘Trump believes he has power to fire Mueller’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump believes that he has the power to fire Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, who is heading the probe into the links between his campaign and Kremlin efforts to influence the 2016 election, the White House has said.

At her daily press conference, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday was repeatedly asked by reporters if Trump believes he has the authority to fire Mueller.

Sanders replied: “We’ve been advised that the President certainly has the power to make that decision”, an answer suggesting that the White House has checked into that matter.

That statement, however, contradicts the opinion of many legal experts. They say if Trump wanted to fire Mueller he would have to turn to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who was the one who named Mueller to head the Russia probe and is overseeing his investigation.

Sanders said that the White House does not agree with the idea that only Rosenstein has the authority to dismiss Mueller.

“This is ridiculous. This is now getting ridiculous,” Trump said Monday, pointing to a “whole new level of unfairness”.

Michael Avenatti, Daniels’ attorney, responded to the news on Twitter, saying “an enormous amount of misplaced faith has been placed” on Cohen’s shoulders.

Mueller’s office and Justice Department have not yet commented on the raids.

Comey compared Trump to ‘mob boss’ WASHINGTON: Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey reportedly compared President Donald Trump to a James Comey “mob boss” in his first interview since being fired last year, the media reported.

A source present at the ABC News taping told Axios this week that the interview will “certainly add more meat to the charges swirling around Trump”.

According to the source, the Comey interview left people in the room stunned. The former Director spoke of things that he had never said before, the source told Axios news. Some described the experience as surreal, he added.

Comey was fired by Trump last year, with the administration saying it stemmed from his handling of the investigation into Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s private email server, CNN reported.

Comey also claimed in Senate testimony that he was defamed by the administration over their justification of his termination.

alifornia Governor Jerry Brown has agreed to deploy National Guard troops along the state’s border with Mexico, but insisted that personnel will not be used to support any immigration enforcement, the media reported.

Brown’s announcement comes less than a week after President Donald Trump called for National Guard troops deployment along the US-Mexico border until a border wall is built, reports Politico news.

The Republican governors of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico have already committed to participate. The three states will initially mobilize some 1,600 troops as part of Trump’s decision to provide military support to the US Border Patrol in order to tackle the increase in irregular immigration.

But Brown, whose state has clashed repeatedly with Trump over immigration and other issues, was far more cautious in his response.

In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, the four-term Democrat said California “will accept federal funding to add approximately 400 Guard members statewide to supplement the staffing of its ongoing program to combat transnational crime” but

Shah undertook the hunger strike at Dharwad in election-bound Karnataka along with party’s Chief Ministerial candidate B.S. Yeddyurappa and other MPs. Shah hit out at the Congress for “disrupting” Parliament, saying it happened for the first in independent India’s history that the ruling party (BJP) was ready to discuss every issue but the opposition was shying away from discussion.

Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who was present at the DefExpo, also observed a fast.

Four civilians, soldier die in Kashmir, militants escape IANS, SRINAGAR

our civilians and a soldier were killed on Wednesday as a fierce gunfight between militants and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district sparked off violent street protests and a call for a two-day shutdown in the Valley.

Sepoy S. Gunakar Roy was killed when militants hiding in a house in Wani Mohalla in Khudwani area

UP assures fair probe against MLA accused of rape IANS, LUCKNOW

he Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday assured a fair probe into the alleged gang rape of a girl by a BJP legislator and the custodial death of her father, saying it was not trying to protect anyone.

However, due to a pending Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, the accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Unnao, has not been arrested, it added.

They may have no objections to vikas, but the idea of including everyone in its fold is anathema to them. So, if they see a Dalit having fared well enough in life to own a horse and ride it, he has to be killed as in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district.

Or, if a Dalit groom wants to take out a baraat (marriage procession) through his village in Uttar Pradesh, the upper caste residents will not allow it.

Killing is the usual option for the saffron rank and file to eliminate those whose conduct violates the Hindutva fads and fetishes.

Hence, anyone suspected of eating beef or who believes in inter-faith romance is either beaten up or done away with. Moreover, the Hindutva storm-troopers are so sure of the righteousness of their cause that they are not deterred by the presence of video cameras when they engage in their lawless acts.

In the 93 years since the formation of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and 67 years of the Jan Sangh-BJP, Muslims were their sole targets. The Dalits were largely ignored because, till recently, they were not assertive enough to annoy the saffron brigade.

The BJP toys with the idea of winning them over for use as vote

banks. It is trying to do so by occasionally paying obeisance to the Dalit icon, B.R. Ambedkar, and choosing a Dalit as the President of the country.

But much of this placatory signalling is probably regarded as tokenism by the Dalits, while for the members of the Brahmin-Bania party, these gestures mean nothing

where their caste bias is concerned.

Moreover, it is obvious that Modi had taken on a near-impossible task of selling his plan for allround development irrespective of caste and creed to his party’s core elements, although as a former RSS pracharak (preacher), he must have been acutely aware of the resistance which they were likely to offer.

ith inter-community violence reported from many parts of India in a society increasingly polarized on religious and caste lines, a small town in Uttar Pradesh is setting an extraordinary example where a temple, a mosque, and even a gurdwara, have joined hands to clean a polluted river.

About 100 km from the state capital Lucknow is the town named Maholi in district Sitapur. Here lies an old Shiva and a Radha-Krishna temple along with Pragyana Satsang Ashram and a mosque, all at a stone’s throw of each other.

Along the periphery of this amalgamated religious campus, passes a polluted river called Kathina, that merges into the highly polluted Gomti River, a tributary of the mighty but polluted Ganges River.

Syria: Trump warns of missile strike The threat of missile strike follows the failure of the UN Security Council to pass a resolution on Tuesday condemning the gas attacks and setting up an inquiry into it

S President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned Syria and Russia that he was readying missile strikes on the Middle Eastern nation in retaliation for allegedly using chemical weapons in rebel-held territories.

“Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria,” he tweeted. “Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart’! You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!”

The threat of missile strike follows the failure of the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution on Tuesday condemning the gas attacks and setting up an inquiry into it. A US-sponsored resolution was vetoed by Russia and two proposed by Moscow failed to get a majority.

fact-finding mission to Syria to investigate the chemical attacks.

On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his personal lawyer’s office and hotel room and seized documents.

According to media reports, they were looking for documents relating to payoff by the lawyer, Michael Cohen, to a porno actor known as Stormy Daniels and, possibly, other women to keep quiet about the affairs they claim to have had with Trump before he was elected.

DAMASCUS: Bouthaina Shabaan, the political and media adviser to President Bashar al-Assad, said on Wednesday that her country is not fearing the US threats of striking Syria.

In an interview with pan-Arab alMayadeen TV on Wednesday, Shabaan said the US threats of striking Syria aim to practice more pressure to make more gains, Xinhua reported.

She stressed that consultations are ongoing among the allies of Syria and they will not leave things to go Washington’s way.

Her remarks come as the US is banging the drums of war on Syria over allegations of toxic gas use by the Syrian army against the rebels in the capital Damascus’ Eastern Ghouta countryside. The Syrian government has denied the allegations.

257 killed in Algeria military plane crash IANS, ALGIERS

t least 257 people were killed on Wednesday after an Algerian military aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Boufarik military airfield outside the capital, the Defense Ministry said.

The majority of the victims were from military, comprising 247 passengers and 10 crew members, all of whom were killed when the Soviet-manufactured Ilyushin aircraft crashed into a field near the airbase between Algiers and the city of Blida, the BBC reported

citing the Ministry as saying.

The aircraft was en route to southwest province of Bechar. It was not clear what caused the crash. It is the deadliest plane crash since 2014, when 298 people were killed after a Malaysian airlines jet was shot down over Ukraine.

Algerian TV station Ennahar showed images of smoke rising from the plane’s fuselage, tilted to one side, with part of the aircraft sticking out above olive trees.

Dozens of bodies were seen in numbered bags as paramedics and firefighters worked at the crash site.

Cranes at the site were trying to move the debris.

Among the dead were 26 members of the Polisario Front, seeking independence from Morocco for Western Sahara and supported by Algeria, reports said.

Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Ahmed Gaid Salah extended condolences to the families of the victims and ordered an investigation into the crash. The authorities were working to identify remains of those killed.

LONDON: China has remained the worlds top executioner amid a decline in global executions, Amnesty International’s annual report on capital punishment said on Thursday.

Amnesty International recorded at least 993 executions in 23 countries in 2017, down by 4 per cent from 2016 (1,032 executions) and 39 per cent from 2015 when the London-based organisation reported 1,634 executions, the highest number since 1989.

Besides China, 84 percent of all reported executions took place in just four countries — Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Pakistan.

LONDON: Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, on Wednesday published a signed article in a major British newspaper, saying that “the United States has announced successive protectionist tariffs pursuant to its domestic law, forcing China to take counter-measures.”

rammy-nominated Indian-American songwriter Raja Kumari, also a rapper, desires her music — that she uses as a bridge between the East and West — to reach far and wide. And so, she wants to get involved in Bollywood as it has a “great impact” on the world.

The California-based artiste with roots in Andhra Pradesh has been performing in India, appearing on reality shows and also teaming up with Indian talent for songs.

What else is she planning to explore in India?

“I want to use my time in India wisely and explore the opportunities and try something new. I want to do more stuff in Hindi films. It (Bollywood) has such a great impact on the entire world. The idea that something I write can reach so many more people, that’s exciting for me as a musician,” Kumari told IANS. The music scene in India is “completely different” from that in the US. “In India everything is Bollywood music. It is the most popular genre. The genre that we are making (in the US) is a new thing here... the independent music.

“In America, there isn’t much

opportunity for Indian singers in mainstream music. It is something that we are trying to change,” said the artiste, who was a celebrity guest in Amazon Prime Video’s Unscripted Original, “The Remix” where she collaborated with contestants Yash and Kryll to recreate Bollywood number “Ankhiyon se goli marein”.

The “City slums” hitmaker also got to fulfil her dream of visiting Himachal Pradesh, popular for its scenic beauty.

n a pioneering effort to tackle the growing mountains of ewaste, an IIT-trained Australian scientist of Indian origin at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) here has helped launch the world’s first microfactory that can transform electronic waste (ewaste) like smartphones and laptops into valuable material for re-use.

Professor Veena Sahajwalla, a materials scientist at UNSW and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT) at the varsity, said the e-waste microfactory is the first of a series under development

and in testing at UNSW which is now actively wooing Indian students to its Sydney campus.

These microfactories can also turn many types of consumer waste such as glass, plastic and timber into

Using technology developed after extensive scientific research at the SMaRT Centre, the e-waste microfactory has the potential to reduce the rapidly growing problem of vast amounts of electronic waste.

According to Sahajwalla, microfactories present a solution to burning and burying of waste items that contain materials that can be transformed into value-added substances and products to meet existing and new industry and consumer demands. She termed microfactories a “truly sustainable solution to our growing waste problem while offering economic benefits available to local communities”.

Sushil won gold at the CWG for the third consecutive time. While the men’s table tennis team, spearheaded by Achanta Sharath Kamal, thrashed Nigeria 3-0 in the final, the mixed badminton team outplayed three-time defending champions Malaysia 3-1 in the final.

In team table tennis, India struck a golden pair as the men emulated the

women’s effort. The men’s team defeated Nigeria 3-0, after beating Singapore in the semi-finals earlier in the day. The mixed badminton team also rose to the occasion.

Kidambi Srikanth, Saina Nehwal and doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa all won a match each.

GOLD COAST: India’s Heena Sidhu won gold in the women’s 25 metre Pistol event, while para-lifter Sachin Chaudhary settled for a bronze while five boxers assured at least a medal each and both the men’s and the women’s hockey teams entered the semi-finals at the 21st Commonwealth Games here.

Heena, who finished third in the qualifier, notched up a new CWG record of 38 points, even as other shooters disappointed, with Chain Singh and Gagan Narang finished a distant fourth and seventh, respectively.

Heena’s medal was India’s eighth — including three golds — in the shooting discipline as she bagged her second medal here after her silver medal win in the 10m air pistol on Sunday.

The other medal was a surprise as Sachin lifted the combined effort of 181 points. In his first two attempts, he failed to lift 201 kg but he did it in the final attempt to finish in the topthree to take India’s medal tally to 21 medals. India is third in the medal table — behind Australia (130 medals) and England (74 medals).

Lifters Sanjita, Lather strike medals GOLD COAST: Indian weightlifters continued their highly impressive medal-winning performances as K. Sanjita Chanu and Deepak Lather clinched gold and bronze respectively.

Sanjita won in the women’s 53 kilogram category as the Manipuri star lifted a total of 192 kg which

included a CWG record of 84 kg in the snatch and 108 kg in clean and jerk, while Lather bagged a bronze medal in the men’s 69 kilogram competition. He managed 136 kilograms in the snatch and 159 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 295 kg.

he Centre this week said it will formulate a scheme as directed by the Supreme Court in the Cauvery water dispute case but the name or the nomenclature of the body for enforcing the order should not matter.

Union Water Resources Secretary U.P. Singh told reporters here that the question is whether the Centre has the flexibility to formulate a scheme to implement the Supreme Court judgement that will make it “more effective”.

“You have to have a kind of body which will be effective,” he said adding that the Centre would consult the states and get the final approval of the Court.

The Supreme Court earlier this week had pulled up the Centre for not finalizing the scheme within six months of its February 16 order and asked the government

SC to hear plea on Guru Nanak film IANS, NEW DELHI

he Supreme Court this week agreed to hear a plea by the Shromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) seeking to block the release of the film Nanak Shah Fakir. The film based on the first Sikh Guru — Guru Nanak — is set for release on April 13. The court will take the matter up next week.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud told petitioner Satinder Singh Gulati that the Central Board of Film Certification has already cleared the film for

release. It also said that outsiders cannot control freedom of expression of an artist. Gulati told the court that by a 2003 resolution, the SGPC has said that no one can act

as any of the 10 Sikh Gurus, their family members and the Panj Pyaras. He mentioned the plea for an urgent hearing. The apex court was also told that till date — in the last 550 years — no one has depicted the role of the 10 Sikh Gurus.

Gulati urged the court to hear the matter on April 13, but Chief Justice Misra said: "We will take it up on April 16.”

The court also said that once the certificate is granted (by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), unless it is nullified or modified by a superior authority, the producer has every right to exhibit the film in movie halls.

However, animal rights organization People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), is not too happy.

Manilal Valliyate, CEO, PETA India said in a statement: “While Salman Khan gets to go back home to his movie star life for now, blackbucks were made to pay the highest price, with their lives.”

‘Mango Dreams’: Watchable only for Pankaj Tripathy

O

nly 15 minutes into this appallingly uninspired view of the historical and cultural divide that splintered India into two uneven halves, and I knew this was a foriegner’s view of the communal divide as seen through the prism of a generation gap. But there is a bigger problem. A worse chasm separates the noble intentions of this film’s director (probably a diffident apologist for Britain’s imperialistic designs) from the actual execution of the plot which reeks of amateurishness and clumsiness.

Making matters worse is the chosen language, that halting English which the Indian middleclass speaks when trying to push its way up a crowded queue.

The central figure in an octogenarian Dr Amit Singh (Ram Gopal Bajaj) who has a terrible childhood secret that he must grapple with

before the film is done. But before Dr Singh gets down to confronting his ghosts from the past, the actor must resolve the issue of speaking in an out-of-character language.

Dr Singh’s life is framed in selfconscious bouts with his friend

(S.M. Zaheer) and an NRI son (Samir Kochar) who can’t decide whether he cares for his aging father or is just in it for self-opportunism.

Even the script seems confused.

But, the very dedicated Pankaj Tripathy (a Muslim auto driver) who takes the doctor on an "unforgettable" road journey (or, so the film would like to believe) makes the film watchable.

ctor Tiger Shroff says there can only be one “hero”, and that’s his father Jackie Shroff. He believes in no comparison with the veteran actor. Filmmaker Subhash Ghai, has who directed Jackie in films like Hero, Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak, Yaadein and Karma, this week took to Twitter to praise the father-son duo.

“A great tribute to his father Jackie Shroff is his own bright son Tiger Shroff as ‘Hero’ Vs ‘Hero’ since 1980s and now 2018. I feel so proud of both of them. God bless the family with love and dedication all over,” Ghai wrote.

To this, Tiger replied: “We both are so lucky to have you uncle! But there can only be one hero and that is dad! No comparison!”

ctress Richa Chadha, who has begun shooting for Anubhav Sinha’s political satire titled Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai in Lucknow, says it is refreshing to work with artistes who improvise scenes.

The cast of 12 also includes Saurabh Shukla, Pankaj Tripathi, Vinay Pathak, Pavan Malhotra, Divya Dutta, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Cyrus Broacha, Prateik Babbar and Shriya Pilgaonkar.

Man pays price for attack on Indian

BY A STAFF WRITER ETHEL PARK, PA -- A Bethel Park, Pennsylvania man has been sentenced for a November 2016 attack on an Indian-American, after being charged in a hate crime.

The US Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania announced on April 6 that Jeffrey Allen Burgess, 56, has been sentenced in federal court to three years’ probation for a 1996 attack on Ankur Mehta.

Burgess will have to go through four months of home detention; continued alcohol treatment through Pyramid Healthcare, Inc., or as directed by the U.S. Probation Office; 50 hours of community service; full participation in a restorative justice program administered

by Center for Victims; and restitution in an amount to be determined by the Court at a later date, on a charge of violating the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer imposed the sentence on Burgess who attacked Mehta, and broke his jaw at a South Hills Red Robin restaurant because he thought Mehta was an Arab.

Burgess was sitting at the next table at the Red Robin and began shouting expletives at the Indian-American, calling him a “sand n….r” while Mehta was wearing earphones and listening to music while playing on his computer tablet.

Burgess is also reported to have said that since President Trump had become President, he no longer had to “put up with you people.”

The restaurant manager called 911 after Burgess punched Mehta and kept hitting him in the head, neck and throat.

Skokie to tighten rules for tobacco purchase

HICAGO,IL -- Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, a best-selling author of books on meditation for physical, mental, and spiritual health and wellness, says that even though “we are pained by the conflicts that exist worldwide, the solution to peace resides with us.”

According to him, if each of us were to find peace within ourselves, we would naturally radiate it to others.

“We can take steps towards being a source of peace in the world by letting go of grudges and thoughts of revenge. How can we ever build a world of peace if we don’t break this cycle with forgiveness? Many of the world’s problems stem from a sequence in which one party hurts another who then seeks to retaliate; then, the original party responds with more actions of revenge.

“In this way, a cycle continues, lasting sometimes for days, weeks, months, or years.

In some instances, a cycle of revenge may last for centuries. Whenever we find ourselves in a situation when we have been injured in word or deed, there are two paths we can take: We can choose the path of anger and retaliation, or we can choose the path of forgiveness and love.

“For those who choose the former path, there is often no end to the hurt and outrage.

With strength, courage, and a spiritual outlook on life, however, we can put a stop to the cycle of revenge by choosing the path of forgiveness.

We can wash away the hurts of the past and replace them with the warmth of human kindness.

“Not only will we gain freedom from psychological pain and the physical stress that comes with it, but we will allow others around us to also heal so that they, too, can find peace.

greatly improves our psychological well-being.

“Rather than holding on to pain and resentment when someone is unloving toward us, we can learn the art of forgiveness. We can replace the sorrows of the world with a smile of love to blossom the hearts of others. In return, our own heart will blossom. This will preserve our peace of mind and will prevent what may be a minor event from escalating into a much larger difficulty.

“If we forgive, we will continue to maintain thoughts, words, and deeds of goodness. When someone hurts us, but we choose not to respond in kind, what happens? Generally, the one who tries to hurt us later regrets what he or she did. If we continue to act sweetly and lovingly toward them, they often become transformed. They begin to see their own actions as a reflection in a mirror. When there is no reaction from us, the angry person calms down and sees how foolish he or she acted.

“The biggest culprit that stands in the way of our developing forgiveness is our ego. It is the cause of all anger and vengeance. Anger is the ego’s reaction when it is not getting its

way. People are so habituated to responding with anger that they think it is normal. They justify it by saying that it is “healthy to let out ones’ feelings.”

“When others do not live up to our expectations of what we want from them, we express our disappointment with angry thoughts, words, or deeds. What we fail to realize is that anger weighs us down. When we eliminate it from our system, we can experience God’s love flowing to us. Although God’s love is always there, our feelings of anger and retaliation repel our ability to receive this love.

“The ego is the burden that makes it difficult for us to tread a spiritual path. It prevents us from moving from duality— thinking ourselves as different from others— to oneness, wherein we realize that we are all the same, at the level of the soul. The first way to reduce the hold that ego has on us is by learning how to meditate on the inner Light and Sound.

Summing up, Sant Rajinder Singh says: “Through daily meditation, we can identify with our true self, our soul, rather than our ego. In these troubled times, if we can learn to meditate and find a place of calm and peace within ourselves, we will be able to face the challenges of life. We will not only be peaceful ourselves, but we will radiate peace to all those we meet. No one had ever been effective in trying to make others change and become peaceful. Peace begins with us, with you and me.”

BY A STAFF WRITER KOKIE, IL -- With nearby towns either changing the age to legally buy tobacco products or looking to do so, leaders in Skokie say the village could be the next while Niles currently plans stay put with the current state law.

The Skokie Village Board is scheduled later this month to consider an ordinance change that would raise the minimum age for buying tobacco and related products in the village from 18 to 21, officials said.

If approved, businesses would no longer be able to sell cigarettes to 18-year-olds, a change that the village of Wilmette recently enacted.

State legislators have also talked about hiking the minimum age for buying tobacco from 18 to 21 at the state level.

“Right now, Skokie’s law is the state law so people have to be 18,” said Bruce Jones, the village’s environmental health supervisor. “Skokie is looking to increase the age of purchasing tobacco to 21.”

Jones said the Skokie Board of Health has discussed increasing the minimum age for tobacco purchases for some time. Still, some owners of Skokie businesses that sell tobacco do not favor making the change.

“If it’s a state law, then it applies to everyone and that’s OK,” said Janeer Atiah who owns MS Tobacco in the 4000 block of Oakton Street.

BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO – Ohmkaram-sponsored program, ‘Kerala Express’, on March 31 at John Burroughs High School auditorium in St Louis was a visual and auditory treat and captivated the 400-strong audience.

‘Kerala Express’ was a medley of various performing arts unique to Kerala, including Theyyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Thiruvathira Kali, Puli Kali, Thumbi Thullal, Bharathanatyam, Chendamelam, Sopanam and Panchavadyam.

Ohmkaram artists had created a temple backdrop on the stage for these performances, apt for this event since these art forms are temple arts from Kerala. Graced by more than sixty performers from Natyalaya School of Arts (Indianapolis), Natyakala Dance Group (Minneapolis), Kalashetra (Chicago), and Natyapadhanjali School of Dance (St. Louis), it was hailed as an absorbing performance.

The mind-blowing rhythms of Chendamelam (play of drums) by the Chicago Kalashetra troupe were enthralling. The age-old storytelling dance form of Kathakali was played out Krishnaleela’s ‘Kaliya Mardhanam’ with expressive gestures, colorful makeup & costumes. Paired along with the graceful movements of Mohiniattam, it was a treat to watch.

Not to be missed was Bharatnathyam by Guru Prathibha Sudhir and troupe of Natyapadhanjali school of dance, St Louis, which featured the well-known story of Lord Krishna in his feminine form as Mohini, offering the nectar of life to Gods while hoodwinking the Asuras.

Ohmkaram is a St Louis, Missouribased Malayalee Hindu Cultural non-profit organization. It conducts about six programs for its members annually while organizing a special program with artistes from India and other states in America.

This was the third annual event conducted

by Ohmkaram, and it hopes to bring many more of such programs in future. It also conducts Malayalam classes. Ohmkaram is also a big believer in giving back to the community, organizing every year events beneficial to the local community while supporting philanthropy and helping the needy.

Ohmkaram also provides annual scholarships to poor but bright students in Kerala.

Rangla Punjab exhibits Punjab’s culture

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- One of the most-awaited cultural programs of the year, ‘Rangla Punjab 2018’ organized by the Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (PCS) was celebrated with great success.

The local community, primarily those born and raised here, came together to celebrate the Punjabi festival of Vaisakhi.

The event electrified the audience for some five hours at Meadows Clubs in Rolling Meadows, a Northwest suburb of Chicago.

More than 1,000 people were in attendance at this sold-out event, with about 250 participants, more than 35 acts, and 50 organizers.

The memorable, family-oriented show encompassed a record-breaking number of vibrant, energetic, authentic Punjabi folk dances and cultural performances.

Participating teams hailed from all around Chicagoland and the neighboring states of Wisconsin and Indiana, and they featured children as young as the age of five, all the way up to adults.

The evening was started with a ‘Shabad’, prayer, by the children of Gurmat School of the Sikh Religious Society (SRS) of Palatine. Colorful dances and songs were performed by local artists of all age groups.

Bhangra teams like Navi Paneeri, Kaum Punjab Di, Warriors Bhangra, gidha dances performed by groups like Shaunkana Chicago Diyan, Milwaukee Gidha, and Bollywood Arts Academy, and Chicago’s renown singers Manmeet Kaur, Mona Bhalla, Maddy Singh, and Parina Mehrotra, put on an unforgettable show.

BY A STAFF WRITER ANTA CLARITA, CA -- Authorities in California are urging the community to help find an Indian American family of four, missing on a recent trip between Santa Clarita, near Valencia in Southern California, and Portland, Oregon.

The family, Sandeep Thottapilly, 42; Soumya Thottapilly, 38; Siddhant Thottapilly; 12; and Saachi Thottapilly, 9, has gone missing since April 5.

The Thottapillys had been on a road trip from their home in Santa Clarita to Portland and back. It was during a leg of their trip heading south from Portland to San Jose when all contact was lost.

They were last known to have been around the Klamath-Redwood National Park area.

The family, which reportedly checked out of the Holiday Inn Express hotel in Klamath, Ore., on April 6, was heading to San Jose to spend an evening with Sandeep Thottapilly’s cousin but didn’t show up.

A ‘missing-persons’ report was filed with the San Jose Police Department.

As per a report from Valencia, the authorities in San Jose, who are handling the case, are investigating whether an SUV that had been swept away into a river in Mendocino County during heavy rains was carrying the family.

The Thottapilly family was driving on the road trip from Portland to San Jose in a marooncolored Honda Pilot when they lost contact with relatives, according to relatives.

2020 census worries Indian Americans

IHCNJ, Santram Bhakta Samaj, hold health fair

BY A STAFF WRITER EW J E R S EY, N J - On April 1, the Indian Health Camp of New Jersey (IHCNJ) and Shree Santram Bhakta Samaj of the US organized a Santram Satsang followed by a health screening and disease awareness and prevention fair at Ukranian Cultural Center, 135 Davidson Avenue, Somerset, New Jersey.

The unique collaboration between these two organizations was a symbol to serve needy people in the community and celebrate volunteerism which is a motto of Divine Holiness Param Pujya Shree Ramdasji Maharaj of Shree Santram Mandir, Nadiad who has been providing humanitarian services throughout India and never solicit any funds.

IHCNJ, a non-profit organization, is providing health fairs to benefit needy people in the community for the past 20 years. On December 1, it will celebrate its 20th anniversary, a big milestone of its dedicated community service for south Asians residing in New Jersey.

The health fair was open to all participants above the age of 40 without any medical insurance. The health screenings included blood test, EKG, vision screening for glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, physical examination, cardiology and physical therapy counseling, various types of cancer screening and prevention education, and mental health screening to participants.

The physicians, consultants, mental health providers and other allied health care professionals from various specialties medical assistants, nurses, social workers and medical students and other volunteers provided their services to screen and educate patients on various chronic debilitating diseases specifically targeted to the South Asian population.

IHCNJ, Shree Santram Bhakta Samaj of the US and local volunteers from various civic organizations and their dedicated committee members provided their selfless and dedicated service to support the health fair. The blood test reports will be reviewed by the physicians and mailed it to all participants with a counseling note, if any abnormalities are detected in the test.

The dedicated team from the State of New Jersey Commission for the Blind provided thorough eye screening to qualified patients to promote their noble cause of preventing blindness in the community. The blood test service was provided by LabCorp of Raritan, New Jersey.

IHCNJ will hold four more health fairs later this year.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -Indian Americans face a severe undercount in the 2020 Census, noted Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, during a national press call on April 5.

The call brought together several civil rights leaders who examined the impact of chronic underfunding and a new, untested question on citizenship to the accuracy of the 2020 Census count. The panelists concluded that the citizenship question would deter the immigrant community from responding.

India is the home country for the fastestgrowing population of undocumented Americans; almost half a million Indian Americans–one out of every six–lack requisite immigration documents, according to data culled from 2016 Department of Homeland Security statistics.

Department’s civil rights division during the Obama administration, noted that many Indian Americans live in “mixed status” households, in which certain family members may be citizens whereas others are undocumented. Such households would be reluctant to respond to the Census survey, she said.

“The level of distrust is already very high; it is pitched by the anti-immigrant rhetoric of this administration,” said Gupta.

“The climate of fear created by the Trump administration will cause participation rates to plummet,” she asserted.

“Inclusion in the Census is very important to the functioning of our democracy,” said Gupta, underscoring the point that both federal dollars and representation in government are determined by Census data.

She feared that insufficient federal resources would be allocated to minority communities based on an inaccurate Census count, and added that mayors around the country–of both parties–are concerned

about potential cuts in federal revenue due to inaccuracies in Census data.

Gupta also noted that President Donald Trump’s request of $3.8 billion in this year’s budget to fund the 2020 Census is about $933 million short of the revenue needed.

California state Attorney General Xavier Becerra immediately filed a lawsuit. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman led a coalition of 18 attorneys general and six cities and the bipartisan US Conference of Mayors to file a lawsuit on April 2 which would block the administration from adding the citizenship question to the 2020 form.

Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, added that the new decision to count incarcerated people in the counties in which they are jailed, rather than their homes, would also lead to inaccurate data. He characterized an undercount of a specific community as racial discrimination.

Morial served as Chair of the 2010 Census Advisory Committee.

NYPD stops illegal spying on Muslims

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK — The New York Police Department (NYPD) has agreed not to conduct surveillance based on religion or ethnicity and to listen to Muslims as it develops new training materials as part of a deal to settle claims it illegally spied on Muslims for years after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The agreement announced on April 5 by the city and the Islamic community also calls for the city to pay $75,000 in damages and nearly $1 million in legal fees. It also ensures surveillance in New Jersey will follow rules defined in another landmark civil rights case.

“Today’s settlement sends a message to all law enforcement: Simply being Muslim is not a basis for surveillance,” said Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates, a legal advocacy and educational organization.

“We won this case, make no mistake about it. But as a member of the armed forces, I believe the United States won as well,” said Farhaj Hassan, a U.S. Army reservist and the lead plaintiff in the 2012 lawsuit in federal court in Newark, New Jersey.

that surveillance program never produced a terrorism lead as it spied on at least 20 mosques, 14 restaurants, 11 retail stores, two grade schools and two Muslim student associations in New Jersey.

The deal came after a Philadelphia appeals court in 2015 likened the surveillance program to when Japanese Americans were interned

during World War II and discrimination before racial unrest in the 1950s and 1960s forced change.

“This settlement demonstrates a continued commitment by the NYPD to safeguard individual constitutional rights while keeping New York the safest city in America,” said Zachary W. Carter, the city’s top lawyer.

Zuckerberg vows to revamp Facebook in US Congress

The Facebook CEO faced two marathon sessions in Congress — one with the Senate and the other with the House — where he was grilled by the lawmakers on the data breach scandal about two per cent even before Zuckerberg sat down. It moved even higher when he started addressing the questions from lawmakers and finished the day with a 4.5 per cent gain.

It added $21.3 billion to Facebook’s market value and $3 billion to Zuckerberg’s personal net worth, Fortune reported.

tressing that there is an online propaganda “arms race” with Russia and it was important to make sure no one interferes in any more elections including in India, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said this week that his own personal data was “improperly shared”.

Appearing before the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee — his second testimony before the US Congress in less than 24 hours — Zuckerberg told the lawmakers that his own personal data was part of 87 million users’ that was “improperly shared” with British political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica.

“We don’t sell the data. We use the data that people put into the system in order to make them more relevant. I believe people own their content,” he told the House panel.

Earlier, during the first five-hour marathon session at US Congress , the Facebook CEO conveyed his concerns about the upcoming elections globally.

“The most important thing I care about right now is making sure no one interferes in the various 2018 elections around the world,” he told a 44-Senator panel.

“As long as there are people sitting in Russia whose job it is to try and interfere with elections around the world, this is going to be an ongoing conflict,” the 33-year-old billionaire said as he prepared to testify again, this time before a House panel.

Zuckerberg had earlier said Facebook will ensure that its platform is not misused to influence elections in India and elsewhere.

Facebook earlier this week said: “Our goals are to understand Facebook’s impact on upcoming elections — like Brazil, India, Mexico and the US midterms — and to inform our future product and policy decisions.”

SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook has launched a “Data Abuse Bounty” program to reward people who report any misuse of data by app developers.

“We committed to launching this program a few weeks ago as part of our efforts to more quickly uncover potential abuse of people’s information,” Collin Greene, Head of Product Security, wrote in a blog post, this week.

The Data Abuse Bounty is inspired by the existing bug bounty program that the company uses to uncover and address security issues and it would help Facebook identify violations of its policies.

This program would reward people with first-hand knowledge and proof of cases where a Facebook platform app collects and transfers

people’s data to another party to be sold, stolen or used for scams or political influence.

“Just like the bug bounty program, we will reward based on the impact of each report.

While there is no maximum high impact, bug reports have garnered as much as $40,000 for people who bring them to our attention,” Greene said.

Facebook would review all legitimate reports and respond as quickly as possible when the company identifies a credible threat to people’s information.

“If we confirm data abuse, we will shut down the offending app and take legal action against the company selling or buying the data, if necessary. We’ll pay the person who reported the issue and we’ll also alert those we believe to be affected,” the executive added.

he BJP this week sought an apology from Congress President Rahul Gandhi and asked him to ensure not to “manipulate” voters and “divide” the society in view of allegations of data theft by political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica (CA).

“Now that Cambridge Analytica’s role in manipulating elections is clear and Facebook has assured to stop it and maintain integrity of India’s elections, probity demands that Rahul Gandhi should apologize and promise not to manipulate voters and divide the society in future!,” Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a tweet.

His remarks come after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, appearing before US Congress accepted that CA “improperly” accessed information and vowed to ensure that no one would interfere in various elections across the globe scheduled in 2018.

hile smoking remains the biggest risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), childhood illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, allergic rhinitis and eczema also amplify the disease, say researchers.

Three-quarters of COPD cases have their origins in poor lung function pathways beginning in childhood, according to a cohort study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal.

A second study in the journal suggests that there could be a window of opportunity during childhood to reduce the risk of poor lung function in later life.

hen heart disease runs in the family, more physical activity may be the best defense, say researchers.

According to the findings reported in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation, greater grip strength, more physical activity and better cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with reduced risk for heart attacks and stroke — even among people with a genetic predisposition for heart disease.

“The main message is that being physically active is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, even if you have a high genetic risk,” said Erik Ingelsson, lead study author and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University’s School of Medicine in California.

To reach this conclusion, researchers looked at data from roughly a half-million people in the UK Biobank database.

BEIJING: Chinese scientists have developed a new method by mixing two chemicals that helps generate stem cells which can self-renew or multiply while maintaining the potential to develop into other types of cells and be used to treat many ailments.

The findings published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, showed a cocktail of two chemicals can induce mature somatic cells to turn back into pluripotent stem cells, Xinhua news agency reported.
