Why is FBI after Robin Raphel?

ontroversial veteran American diplomat Robin Raphel, under FBI scanner as part of an anti-spying probe, was suspected of taking classified information home from the State Department, according to media reports.

Citing unnamed officials, The

New York Times said the FBI was trying to determine why Raphel apparently brought classified information home, and whether she had passed, or was planning to pass, the information to a foreign government.

“ASEAN and India have the vigour and enthusiasm of their youth and wisdom and understanding of their ancient civilisations,” Modi said addressing the 25th ASEAN Summit in this capital of Myanmar.

“Rapidly developing India and ASEAN can be great partners for each other. We are both keen to enhance our cooperation in advancing balance, peace and stability in the region,” he said.

Stating that his government has been in office for six months, Modi said that India has rapidly enhanced its engagement with the east, “a reflection of the priority that we give to this region”.

The simmering of anxiety and discontent has continued with the split in the party’s Tamil Nadu unit providing the latest evidence of the disquiet. dent from the fact that even the cornerstone of its philosophy — secularism — has come under attack from within the Congress.

The Congress’ other deficiency is in the field of economic policy. The root of this failure lies in its inability to break free from the Nehruvian concept of socialism, manifested in a 1955 resolution calling for the establishment of a “socialistic pattern” of society.

Now, the dynasty should take a sabbatical, as former Congress MP Jagmit Singh Brar suggested, so that the party can start cutting loose from the apron strings of a family in the matter of inspirational leadership or intellectual acumen are becoming increasingly apparent. The argument that the Congress will fall apart in the dynasty’s absence begs the question since it is disintegrating even now.

n the battle for Silicon Valley, Indian-American Rohit ‘Ro’ Khanna has conceded defeat after giving seven-term incumbent Mike Honda the toughest fight of his life for the South Bay Congressional seat.

In the Democrats-only tussle, the 38-year-old Khanna, a former Obama administration official conceded after he and Honda agreed it would be impossible to reverse the 73-year-old veteran lawmaker’s 4,000-plus vote lead, the San Francisco Gate reported.

Thousands of votes still remained to be counted in the district, which spreads from Fremont through part of San Jose and over to Santa Clara, Cupertino and

“I think the legislature should reflect the way the people look, so I believe my generation does deserve a voice to fight for my children or grandchildren,” University of Dayton student Antani said on his election.

He defeated 62-year-old Patrick Morris of the Democratic Party in Ohio’s 42nd House District.

“I will work hard and fight every day for my constituents in the Ohio House of Representatives. Together, I know that we can create opportunities so all can achieve their American Dream,” Antani wrote on his Facebook profile.

Antani graduated from Ohio State University in spring last year with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

He is the second Indian American to serve in the Ohio House after Jay Goyal who represented the 73rd District for three terms from 2006 to 2012.

Antani’s parents came to the U.S. in 1987 and settled in Washington Township. Later, they moved to Miami. His father Jaimini died in 2010.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Saira Blair became America’s youngest elected lawmaker as a delegate in the West Virginia House after defeating a 44year-old attorney.

There are more than 7,300 state legislators in the U.S., and fewer than five percent are under the age of 30, according to Morgan Cullen, a policy analyst at the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Wagah attack suspects die in air strikes: Pak military IANS, ISLAMABAD

he Pakistani military claimed to have killed 13 terrorists, including those involved in the Wagah border suicide attack, in aerial strikes, media reported.

KABUL: At least nine people were killed and five injured on November 10 in a suicide attack in Afghanistan’s Logar province. “A suicide bomber approached the entrance of provincial police department in Pul-e-Alam and detonated his explosive jacket among a group of Afghan Local Police (ALP) who were waiting for access,” an official told Xinhua.

The bomber disguised himself as an ALP policeman, the official said.

The victims were seven police personnel, the bomber and a civilian.

The attack followed two explo-

sions in Nangarhar province and in Afghan capital of Kabul earlier in the day, which claimed the lives of three senior police officials and injured three others.

Karnataka, AP to share river water BENGALURU: Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on November 10 agreed to modernize canals on Tungabhadra’s right bank for sharing the river water between the two states. “A proposal will be sent to the Tungabhadra River Management Board for modernizing the canals,” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters after a meeting with his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu and officials here. Modernization of the high and low level canals will not only plug seepages, but also improve the river water flow into Andhra Pradesh.

As 32 TMC (thousand million cubic) litres of water is going waste due to seepage and silt accumulation on the river bed every year, modernization will help flow of water released from the Tungabhadra dam in the state to irrigate fields in Kurnool, Kadapa and Ananthapur districts.

he Telangana government will develop two more aerospace parks as part of its initiatives to garner 15 to 20 percent market share in aerospace and defense sector in next five years, officials said. Adiblatla, which houses Tata’s four units in joint venture with global majors like Sikorsky, Lockheed Martin and RUAG Aviation.

The third facility is being planned on the northern side of Hyderabad and it is most likely to

come up near Warangal, which has an airstrip. Telangana’s Special Chief Secretary, Industries and Commerce, K. Pradeep Chandra said that the IAF move to replace its Avro fleet offers a huge opportunity for Hyderabad to emerge as aerospace and defense hub. As no defense public sector company will be involved in Avro replacement, Hyderabad will have an edge as Bangalore is the biggest hub because of the presence of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Opener Shikhar Dhawan played a stellar knock (91) and forged useful partnerships with Ajinkya Rahane (31) and Ambati Rayadu (35) to lead India to victory.

he Supreme Court on November 9 said it will go through the Justice Mukul Mudgal committee report that probed the allegations of betting and spot fixing in 2013 edition of IPL and also examine whether it could be made public or what parts of it could be withheld.

At the outset of the hearing, a bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla said they have yet to go through the report. “Report has come. None of us (Justice Thakur and Justice Kalifulla) has been able to see it,” the court said as senior counsel Harish Salve said that probe report was submitted to the court November 3. At this, senior counsel C.A. Sundaram, appearing for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), urged the court to see the conclusion of the report and if there was nothing against any of the

Making it clear that his main concern was November 20 BCCI general body meeting, Sundaram said that he was addressing the court on all the office bearers and not just N. Srinivasan who as of now stands side-lined as BCCI chief. rime Minister Narendra Modi on expanded his Union Council of Ministers, inducting 21 new faces, including four with Cabinet rank, with the average age being 56, seeking to consolidate party’s gains of the Lok Sabha elections by giving representation to various regions and communities.

The total strength of the Council of Ministers now goes up to 66.

The much-anticipated first Ministry expansion was marred with ally Shiv Sena calling off participation in the government at the last minute, exacerbating their already strained ties.

Former Shiv Sena leader Suresh Prabhu was sworn in as a cabinet minister after he quit the Shiv Sena. Prabhu, who is the prime minister’s interlocutor for the G20, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is expected to become a Rajya Sabha member. In Mumbai, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray described Prabhu’s joining the BJP as “unfortunate” but indicated that Anant Geete, party’s representative in the Modi government, will continue for the time being.

Thackeray put a condition that his party will sit in opposition in Maharashtra if BJP takes support of NCP to prove its majority

announced till Sunday evening. The first meeting of the expanded council of ministers is slated for Monday.

Former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who is widely tipped to get the defense portfolio, was the first to take oath at the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

BJP general secretary J.P. Nadda, who is known to be close to Modi and party chief Amit Shah, and Birender Singh, who left the Congress ahead of the recent Haryana assembly elections to join the BJP, were administered oath as cabinet ministers by President Pranab Mukherjee.

India Inc happy with expansion Echoing the sentiments of India Inc, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on November 9 congratulated the new members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ministerial council and said the ministryexpansion will help improve the focus on economic recovery.

“The induction of new ministers will streamline governance and bring in new ideas for the economic reforms process,” said CII president Ajay Shriram. “Several of the ministries were under a single minister, and industry was widely expecting the expansion of the cabinet at an early date.”

The industry chamber said at a time when the economy was recovering, it was important to fast-track policies to strengthen this.

The cabinet expansion sends out a signal that the government under Prime Minister Modi is serious about accelerating reforms.

India’s GDP rose 5.7 percent in the first quarter of 2014-15, an improvement over the sub-five-percent rate of the previous two years. Industry is hoping the expanded cabinet will rapidly address tax reform, land acquisition, power and ease of doing business. He said that while the business sentiment picked up since the new government took over, the ministerial expansion will support faster decision-making, efficient administration and faster clearances.

JAGAT PRAKASH NADDA, 54 (Health and family welfare): Brought up in Patna, Nadda was one of the youngest legislators to be elected to Himachal assembly. The veteran politician who earned recognition as a Himachal Pradesh leader lost the race for BJP’s presidency to Amit Shah after the Lok Sabha elections. His big leap into politics started during Emergency in 1977 as an Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad activist. Nadda is known to maintain a low profile and claims to be a disciplined solider of the RSS.

BIRENDER SINGH, 68 (Rural development): A long-time Congress man, he joined the BJP before assembly elections in Haryana to protest against the grand old party not agreeing to the sacking of then chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. In his long political career, he had been Congress in-charge for many states such as Uttarakhand and Himachal, and was the chairperson of many parliamentary standing committees. He had joined the BJP apparently on the assurance that he would get a Union cabinet berth.

Nigaar Khan excited to enter ‘Bigg Boss’ NEW DELHI: Actor Nigaar Z. Khan, who last appeared on TV in the fiction show Main Naa Bhoolungi, is set to join Bigg Boss 8 as the fourth wildcard entry. She is ready to face the challenge of controlling her tongue.

SRI SRI PROVES A CATALYST FOR PEACE FOR FERGUSON

T LOUIS, MO -- October 22 could rightly be proclaimed as the Art of Living Foundation and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Day in St. Louis

Inside Ferguson is a deep weariness -- weariness with the platitudes of leaders and activists, reporters and media outlets, politics and police and now mobs and looters.

Unrest and strife has now become a fixture in this Gateway City. Known for its hallmark St Louis Arch, a beacon of hope that now seems to have the downward curve of a drooping smile.

However, there were many moments to smile when Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a world renowned spiritual leader and founder of Art of Living, addressed a 1,000-strong gathering and led a meditation at an event called at ‘Corner of Peace & True Happiness’ at the St. Charles Convention Center organized by the Foundation on October 22.

Beaming broadly, Mike Casewell, an ASU student in business sustainability, said: “The insight that was given by Sri Sri answered many questions I had about life and the event left me feeling content with myself.”

Echoing a similar sentiment Bobby Bravo, another ASU Master’s student, said: “It was a perfect blend of sharing his insights and uniting people together in a peaceful way.”

In the past at the invitation of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, an ambassador of peace and non-violence, has traveled to Iraq to advise on peace initiatives. And at the request of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, he went to Sri Lanka to act as a mediator during its civil war.

The session was highlighted by a keynote address with Sri Sri, talking about the roots of racism, stress, and declining human values, and outlining a path to removing these through cultivating inner peace, and educating children to be part of a one-world family.

He led a meditation with the huge crowd--many of whom had never meditated before--that left the room in pin-drop silence.

During the audience question-answer session that followed, Sri Sri explained, “It’s time we move from infant joy where we just want to get something all the time,

ADISON, WI -- A Madison woman has been is bilked out of more than $400 in a common phone scam.

The police said the frustrated 22-year-old fell for the scam, where a caller with an Indian accent claimed to be with the Internal Revenue Service, a government agency responsible for tax collection and tax law enforcement.

The victim was told she owed $35,000 to the government and would be arrested if she didn’t take out a Green Dot prepaid card immediately.

She did so and provided the card’s number to the IRS. The phone number being used by the criminal is 866-978-6754.

T LOUIS (MO) – The Gujarati Samaj of St.Louis hosted a grand Diwali Gala Dinner highlighted with a live musical concert on November 1 at St. Ann Community Center.

The exciting event went on till midnight and was greatly enjoyed by more than 500 members and guests.

The program was coordinated successfully by executive committee of St. Louis Gujarati Samaj. It started at 6 pm with the social hour where community members wished each other Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak followed by delicious Gujarati Dinner.

President Sanjay Patel greeted all those present with Diwali and New Year wishes. He listed the activities that the Samaj undertook during his leadership.

Thanking his Committee, volunteers and members for the support that he had, he urged the younger members to come forward and give their time for the Samaj to carry on the good work for the benefit of the community.

“It is important that we here in our adopted

country preserve and promote our Gujarati heritage and culture for upcoming generations,” he said.

This year, the Gujarati samaj will take part with Hindu Temple of St.Louis to build a community center next to the temple for community need. Dr Sharad Parikh gave all details about the community center.

The Samaj will hold a fund-raising event in the near future, what with the fund-raising activity already starting with some donation announcements. The Gujarati community is looking forward for the community center for Samaj use, especially for Navratri and Diwali celebration.

The event concluded with delicious authentic Gujarati dishes. This was followed by a live musical performance by Panorama Musical Orchestra from India.

Extraordinary vocal and instrumental talents of this musical group captured and thoroughly entertained the audience for over three hours with golden oldies and new Hindi movie songs. No wonder, the event was a grand success.

ILES (IL) -- A 7-Eleven was robbed at gunpoint early on November 7 in north suburban Niles.

Around 3:05 am, someone walked into the 7-Eleven at 7450 Oakton St. and asked the clerk about cigarettes.

The Niles police said the suspect lifted his sweatshirt and revealed a handgun in his waistband. He told the clerk not to push any alarm buttons and asked for the money in the register.

The clerk put money in a plastic 7-Eleven bag from behind the counter and the suspect left the store, heading east and then north on an adjacent side street.

The suspect is described as a black male, standing between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-8, weighing between 170 and 175 pounds, with black hair.

He was wearing a Chicago Bulls hat, a black scarf over his nose and mouth, a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, tight-fitting black gloves and white and black gym shoes.

The clerk said the suspect had a white earpiece in his left ear with a wire going down under his sweatshirt.

VANSTON (IL) -- Evanston health officials have not been able to determine what made an unusually large number of students and staff ill at Washington Elementary School last week.

Health officials said the school was cleaned and sanitized over the weekend after students and staff fell ill with vomiting and diarrhea.

A Halloween parade was cancelled on October 31 and parents were invited to pick up their children early.

City health officials have not found the origin of the illnesses, which were limited to Washington School, 914 Ashland Ave. No widespread sickness has been reported at other District 65 schools.

Parents have been asked to keep sick children out of school and activities until they are symptom-free for 24 hours.

Man pulls out gun to scare pre-teen

ADISON, WI – A 12-year-old Madison boy has told the police that a man pulled a gun on him when he was out riding his long board in the afternoon on November 11.

The boy was in a cross-walk on N. Sherman Avenue when a van driver pulled into his path, butting him off. The boy got off his board and walked around the front of the van, which was stopped. That’s when the passenger lifted up a gun and pulled the slide back, as if to chamber a round.

The boy fled to a friend’s home and told his parents about his frightening encounter.

The police were notified the next day.

A description of the vehicle is a white van, possibly a Dodge Sprinter, with a green design on the sides and back.

The victim says the design looked like

vines. The driver of the vehicle was a white female, in her 30’s, with light brown hair pulled into a ponytail.

The passenger was a black male, also in his 30’s, with a large build. He’s described as having puffy hair worn under a flat brimmed baseball cap, and was wearing a black sweatshirt or jacket.

PRINGFIELD, MASS., Almost three million Asian Indians in the United States celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, on Oct. 23.

For the more than 300,000 Asian-Indian owned firms* in the U.S., the holiday takes on an added dimension, as the celebration marks the beginning of a new business year.

To help business owners prepare for the New Year ahead, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) is offering a series of free, no-obligation business seminars in five cities across the country this Diwali.

In a special Diwali ritual for businesses known as Chopda Pujan, new account books are opened and blessed. Business owners use this time to reflect on the past year while looking ahead to new opportunities for prosperity and wealth.

A MassMutual study** found that although 77 percent of Asian Indian business owners believe financial planning for their business is very important, only 43 percent are concerned about who will run their businesses if they or another owner leaves, becomes disabled or dies; only 46

percent have a formal retirement plan.

Celebrity fashion designer Naeem Khan and his wife, jewelry designer Ranjana Khan, helped support the cause by hosting a spectacular fundraiser at their fashion studio in Manhattan. The evening raised funds for the charity via ticket sales and auction items.

Wishwas is a New York City-based non-profit organization focusing on two initiatives; empowering low-income immigrant women assimilate within society and training them in vocational skills to make them financially self- sufficient.

“I am so touched and honored for the support Wishwas has received from our community. The funds we raised at our gala will help us a great deal to better the lives of so many women.” says Wishwas Executive Director, Nivedita Chandrappa.

PAKISTANI HELD IN TALIBAN TERROR CASE SUES US GOVT

IAMI (FL) -- Irfan Khan, a naturalized US citizen from Pakistan with wife and two children, worked hard to realize the American dream after arriving in this country in 1994.

He held jobs in South Florida as a taxi driver and service technician, and operated a limousine company. He was an avid cricket player. Then he stepped up to a California computer industry job in 2011 that promised a good living.

A short time later, Khan was indicted, along with his father and brother — both Muslim imams at South Florida mosques — with conspiring to provide up to $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban terror group.

Khan spent 319 days in solitary confinement before federal prosecutors abruptly dropped all

“It was very, very hard,’’ Khan said of his days spent praying and reading in a lonely cell.

Later, a federal judge ordered the acquittal of Khan’s brother for lack of evidence, although their elderly father, Hafiz Khan, was convicted at trial and sentenced to 25 years behind bars.

He’s serving that time at a federal prison in

North Carolina.

Now, Irfan Khan is suing the US government for malicious prosecution, accusing authorities of essentially manufacturing a non-existent case against him. He is seeking potentially tens of millions of dollars in damages.

A Miami federal judge refused the Justice Department’s attempt to get the case dismissed, and it’s headed for a June 2015 trial date.

Khan has had trouble opening bank accounts, leasing a car and getting a mortgage. His children, haunted by their father’s arrest, fear the police.

Friends and family shun him, asking that he delete their phone numbers, fearing they too will be targeted for surveillance.

“Everywhere I look is a dead end for me,’’ Khan said. “I was unfairly targeted and I don’t want this to happen to anybody ever again. I just want justice.’’

2 teens on bridge hit by train

UDORA (KS) -- Two teens could be in trouble with the law after they were struck by a train in Eudora, Kansas, on November 1.

Sergeant Chris Morris of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office said the two were hanging out on a bridge just before 4 pm when they saw the train coming and tried to get off the bridge in time. They were unsuccessful and were hit.

The lieutenant said that what the teens were doing is considered criminal trespassing.

Both boys, who are approximately 16, were found with serious injuries and were airlifted to local hospitals.

While one is from Eudora and the other from Lawrence.

The incident happened just west of the Eudora water treatment facility and north of Old K-10 near the Wakarusa River.

‘Appuchi Graamam’, a scientific-fiction story in ‘Malgudi Days’ style IANS, CHENNAI

ebutant filmmaker Vi Anand describes his forthcoming Tamil movie Appuchi Graamam, which releases in cinemas on November 14, as a science-fiction story enveloped in the style that R.K. Narayan’s Malgudi Days was told.

“It’s actually a village drama with science-fiction element as the backdrop. I’ve handled this film the way Malgudi Days was shot.

The filmmaking style is very sim-

ple. We’ve captured the life in a village as realistically as possible and never tried to enhance the viewing experience with any gimmicks,” Anand told IANS. The film’s script was inspired by a newspaper article Anand read in his childhood.

“The article was about a small village near Erode (in Tamil Nadu). When news about ‘end of the world’ broke out, people in this village were so much in panic that they decided to celebrate every living minute. They started celebrat-

ing with family and friends because they felt that might be their last day on earth,” he said.

“What inspired me was that how the news about the ‘end’ had so much effect on the lives of these people in the small village. The core idea of the film is that when we know about the time and day of our death, we tend to be different from how we used to live,” he added.

Anand decided that the only way he could talk about the ‘end of the word’ in his story if he includ-

ed an element of natural disaster.

“I stumbled upon research information that meteorites and asteroids are among the top ten threats to mankind. Thus, the sci-fi angle was justified,” he said.

“I never wanted to do a story about an asteroid hitting a village.

It’s the other way around. I wanted to capture the human emotions when death is upon us and we can’t do anything about it. When tsunami struck us a few years ago, there was so much of drama in it required for a film’s story,” Anand added.
