ARWOOD (NJ) -- A photo of a Garwood home flying a black flag with an Islamic message has gone viral on Twitter after it was posted recently, with commenters expressing concern that the resident supports the ISIS jihadist group with whom the flag is sometimes associated.

According to Winslow Place resident Mark Dunaway, 44, he has flown the flag for at least 10 years during Ramadan and on Fridays when he goes to mosque without issue, until the photo of his home was posted on Twitter “I understand now that people turn on 14 Page CNN and see the flag associated with jihad, but that’s not the intention of that flag at all,” Dunaway said.

“He’s absolutely flown it many times before,” Figueiredo said. “I’m more concerned about the crazy people saying they’re going to retaliate and set his house on fire. They’re the extremists.”

Dunaway said he was unsure if he would fly the flag again.

“I’m hesitant to fly it now considering it has caused so much trouble, which I don’t understand,” Dunaway said. “I would love to fly it again on Friday. I hope this situation goes away.”

Marc Leibowitz told authorities that a friend of his took the photo and sent it to him but he didn’t want to be involved in the issue.

Leibowitz then posted it on Twitter and reported it to Homeland Security because “watching the brutality of ISIS in the Middle East and seeing what appears to me to be an ISIS flag flying in a community not far from my home, it seemed prudent and appropriate to notify the authorities.”

ACEY (NJ) -- A cab driver was robbed when a passenger wrapped a telephone cord around his neck earlier this week.

The man first tried to pay for his 4 am ride from Lakewood to Lacey with what the driver suspected was a fake $100 bill. When the driver refused to take the bill, the passenger choked the driver with the cord and ordered him to hand over his money.

According to the police, the suspect then ran from the cab with $124 into a wooded area near where the cab stopped on Lakeside Drive East just east of Mariner Road in the Forked River section of town.

The 35-40 year-old robber has pock marks on his face, black hair, a slender build and stands about 5-foot-9. He was wearing a green Philadelphia Eagles hat, blue jeans, work boots and carried a wallet with a chain. The police also described the man as looking sickly.

he Islamic State (IS) group has claimed beheading a U.S. journalist who had gone missing in Syria nearly two years ago, a media report said on August 20.

The Sunni militant group has released a video showing one of its fighters beheading James Foley, an employee of the media company GlobalPost who was kidnapped November 22, 2012 by unidentified gunmen, Al Jazeera reported.

The IS militants said that they acted in revenge for U.S. strikes against the group in Iraq and threatened to kill another U.S. journalist.

‘Ex-PM Singh still immune’

United States court here has ruled that former India prime minister Manmohan Singh had “head of state immunity” from claims that he supported violence against Sikhs, but it did not cover his tenure as finance minister.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in the District of Columbia on August 19 ruled that Manmohan Singh was entitled to “residual immunity” even after he ceased to be the prime minister as suggested by the U.S. State Department.

U.S.-based rights group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) and one Inderjit Singh had alleged that Manmohan Singh had “tortured and killed Indian Sikhs during his time at the helm of that country’s government and, before then, as Finance Minister,” the judge noted.

Accepting the State Depart-

ment suggestion of immunity, the judge ruled that “although he is no longer a head of state, Singh is entitled to residual immunity for acts taken in his official capacity as Prime Minister.”

But because such residual immunity does not cover actions Singh pursued before taking office, however, the allegations stemming from his time as Finance Minister survive.”

SFJ and Inderjit Singh had claimed in the 2013 suit that as finance minister between 1991 and 1996, Manmohan Singh “funded several counter insurgency operations in state of Punjab during the 1990s resulting in more than hundred thousand Sikhs being killed extra- judicially by the security forces”.

During his tenure as prime minister, Manmohan Singh was accused of being complicit in the torture and killing of hundreds of thousands of Sikhs and for shielding the perpetrators.

Modi prevails over saffron traditionalists Modi’s call for moratorium on communal violence is clearly understandable as no development is possible without social peace AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

P

erhaps the most important part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech from the ramparts of New Delhi’s Red Fort was his call for a 10-year moratorium on caste-based and communal violence.

As it follows President Pranab Mukherjee’s condemnation of the “poison-drips” of bigotry in his broadcast on the eve of Independence Day, it is evident that the government is focussing on the rising communal temperature, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, which has been discussed in parliament. The emphasis is understandable because no development, which is Modi’s primary objective, can take place unless there is social peace.

However, the point to ponder is how far the government can go to

check this disquieting trend, especially because elements associated with the saffron brotherhood are involved in fomenting tension.

The government may crack down on its opponents who whip up communal feelings, but will the saffronites heed Modi’s coun-

sel of restraint? And, what will be the government’s response if they don’t? Among those who has long been an offender in this respect is the saffron-robed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, Yogi Adityanath, who said during the debate on communal violence that Hindus

who feel threatened must “fight back”. Considering that the RSS and its affiliated organizations used the recent occasion of rakhi, or the custom of a sister tying a thread on a brother’s wrist, to mobilize Hindus to prevent any of their sisters being courted by

Muslim young men, it is not difficult to understand what the idea of fighting back means in the saffron lexicon.

There have also been others from the Hindutva camp whose recent comments have been deemed provocative. Among these is the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief, Mohan Bhagwat’s observation that all Indians are Hindus in a cultural sense irrespective of their religion. Clearly, a moratorium cannot be effective if such poison drips continue.

There is little doubt that his idea of turning India into a manufacturing hub for the world’s industrialists will run into opposition not only from the communist parties and the Leftists in the Congress, but also from the saffron trade union and farmer’s outfits such as the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) and the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS).

So, the Modi government will have to fight on two fronts — against its own saffron camp as well as the left-leaning opposition, which includes virtually all the parties, except perhaps the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

The magnitude of his task can be gauged from the fact that he will be challenging the fundamental precepts of his internal opponents - the theocratic mindset of the Hindu supremacists and the preference for an autarkic system by the economic fundamentalists.

What is more, he doesn’t have time on his hands. Having come to power on the promise of ushering in ‘acchhe din’ or good days, the prime minister cannot take months, let alone years, to show that he means business.

arendra Modi’s visit to Nepal, the first by an Indian prime minister in 17 years, has received kudos from all stakeholders and commentators on both sides of the border and, most importantly for India, from the public in Nepal. What is far more important than the agreements signed or aid promised is the broad vision that was unfolded by the prime minister, of the commitment of his government to take India-Nepal relations to a higher plane, with respect for Nepal’s sovereignty, and it’s equality in partnership regardless of the asymmetry in size, to never interfere in Nepal’s internal affairs, and to promote meaningful cooperation guided by trust and friendship.

While two-and-a-half months into governance is admittedly too short a time-frame to make informed judgments, enough has taken place in the realm of India’s

international relations to try and assess what core principles guide the prime minister.

Continuing with the aim of watching “what they do, not what they say” the signals to China are revealing and encouraging. China is and will remain for the foreseeable future India’s most important and difficult foreign policy challenge.

Court orders release of Sharmila IMPHAL: A Manipur court on August 19 asked the state government to release activist Irom Sharmila Chanu, on indefinite fast for over 13 years, in an order which was cheered by Amnesty International and other rights groups in India’s northeast.

The court order came following a petition filed by the human rights defender Sharmila. Dismissing the Manipur government’s charge that Sharmila was attempting to commit suicide by fasting, the court said there was no material to establish that the woman activist has ever said she was fasting unto death.

“Serving solely on nose feeding without taking any food for over 13 years negates the very feeble presumption of intention of fasting unto death since the petitioner is not refusing nose feeding,” the court obsderved.

GARWOOD MAN IN SOUP FOR FLYING ‘ISIS’ FLAG

ARWOOD (NJ) -- A photo of a Garwood home flying a black flag with an Islamic message has gone viral on Twitter after it was posted recently, with commenters expressing concern that the resident supports the ISIS jihadist group with whom the flag is sometimes associated.

According to Winslow Place resident Mark Dunaway, 44, he has flown the flag for at least 10 years during Ramadan and on Fridays when he goes to mosque without issue, until the photo of his home was posted on Twitter “I understand now that people turn on CNN and see the flag associated with jihad, but that’s not the intention of that flag at all,” Dunaway said.

“It says ‘There is only one god, Allah, and the prophet Muhammad is his messenger.’ It’s not meant to be a symbol of hate. Islam is all about unity and peace. I am not a part of any group like that, and I’m not anti-American. I love my country, but I am a Muslim.”

Dunaway said when Garwood police

spoke to him, he had no idea a photo of his home was on Twitter and he removed the flag voluntarily given the public concern.

The photo has been retweeted more than 400 times so far and has garnered at least 50 comments.

“Jihadists are now in Garwood,” wrote one commenter on the photo.

Dunaway has since replaced the flag with a San Diego Chargers flag, alongside a red Islamic flag, which was flying next to the black flag till recently.

“Tomorrow it might be an L.A. Kings flag,” Dunaway said, adding that he often rotated them. “Every Muslim uses that black flag. You’ll find it in any mosque in the world. I am an American citizen and I love my country, but I am also a Muslim and I use that flag to say I’m a Muslim.”

Dunaway added that he had never had any of his Garwood neighbors question the flag previously.

“They see me in my kufi,” Dunaway said.

“They know me. Garwood is a very quiet, safe town.”

“He’s totally harmless,” said Dunaway’s neighbor Diane Figueiredo. “He goes to work every day. He never bothers anyone. He keeps to himself.”

also holds the title of professor of molecular medicine.

He is an international leader in the clinical evaluation and management of patients with CLL and his research in the field of CLL has pioneered contemporary approaches to this disease, according to a press release.

Rai began his medical career in 1955 after earning his bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery from the University of Rajputana in Jaipur. Following medical school, Rai completed his internship in India at S.M.S. Medical College.

Rai returned to India in 1962 to serve as chief of the Division of Experimental Medicine of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine in New Delhi. After four years in New Delhi, he returned to Brookhaven, and, in 1970, returned to Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he has remained ever since.

Robber chokes cabbie with telephone cord

ACEY (NJ) -- A cab driver was robbed when a passenger wrapped a telephone cord around his neck earlier this week.

The man first tried to pay for his 4 am ride from Lakewood to Lacey with what the driver suspected was a fake $100 bill. When the driver refused to take the bill, the passenger choked the driver with the cord and ordered him to hand over his money.

According to the police, the suspect then ran from the cab with $124 into a wooded area near where the cab stopped on Lakeside Drive East just east of Mariner Road in the Forked River section of town.

The 35-40 year-old robber has pock marks on his face, black hair, a slender build and stands about 5-foot-9. He was wearing a green Philadelphia Eagles hat, blue jeans, work boots and carried a wallet with a chain. The police also described the man as looking sickly.

Pepper spray robbers on prowl in Newark

EWARK (NJ) -- The police are searching for two or three suspects who they say are wanted in at least five robberies at convenience stores throughout the city.

“They work as a team. It’s usually one male and one female, though sometimes they are with a second male,” Newark Detective Hubert Henderson said.

The duo has a similar modus operandi in all robberies--they enter a store and look around, one distracts the employees, and the other either steals cash from the register, merchandise from the store, or personal items like cell phones and iPads from store clerks.

They usually do not have weapons, but use pepper spray during robberies.

“We think they are juveniles, but we are not sure,” Henderson said.

The police have tweeted a surveillance image of the two asking for the public’s help in identifying the.

EW YORK — A Sikh American, critically injured after being hit by a truck, was called a “terrorist” by the attacker, the victim’s wife said, demanding justice for him and terming the assault as an attack on the Sikh American community.

Sandeep Singh, 29, is recovering from injuries he sustained when he was hit by the pick-up truck and dragged about 30 feet following an argument with the driver who used the racist slur against him on July 30.

Singh’s wife Prabhpreet Kaur was among the many members of the Sikh community and civil rights groups who gathered in Queens recently for a support rally organized by the rights group Sikh Coalition calling for justice for Singh and that the attack be investigated by the New York Police Department and the FBI

Members of the community, including women and children, held posters at the rally with messages such as “We Demand Justice,” “We are all Sikhs,” “End Hate,” “Justice for Sandeep,” “Take on Hate,” “Keep Sikhs Safe” and “We are One.” Kaur said her husband was called a “terrorist” and told to “go back to your country” by the truck driver.

When Sandeep protested, he was run over and dragged for 30 feet under the truck and was left to die.

“What happened to my husband was an act of hate perpetrated by a man who expressed bigotry before running him over. This attack is not only an attack on my husband, it is an attack on the Sikh community. It is an attack on Americans,” Kaur said.

ACRAMENTO (CA) -- A yearlong investigation has led to the arrests of two men suspected in the 2013 deaths of Sacramento, Calif., residents Navneal Singh and Demetrius Stafford.

The Monterey County Sheriff ’s office has submitted a complaint to the Monterey County District Attorney’s office, recommending that Richard Singh of Seaside, Calif., be charged with murder in the deaths of the two young men, who were found shot to death on August 11, 2013 in Aromas, a small town in Monterey, Calif. Singh is already in jail on other charges stemming from the incident.

The Sheriff ’s office on August 11 submitted a second complaint to the district attorney’s office, charging Jordan Killens with Singh and Stafford’s death. Killens was taken into custody earlier that day.

On August 11, 2013, a passing motorist found the bodies of Singh and Stafford, just off Highway 101 in Monterey County. The two had been fatally shot and were found on the ground near the rear of a parked car.

No motive has yet been established for the double murder.

EW JERSEY -- Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has given a call to all the Hindus of New Jersey to come forward and wholeheartedly support volunteers making efforts to introduce Diwali as a holiday in New Jersey’s Millburn Township School District (MTSD).

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, in a statement in Nevada, said that the Hindu community was already heartbroken over MTSD not including Diwali as a school holiday in its 2014-2015 school calendar.

Rajan Zed urged New Jersey Hindus to provide the moral, financial, political, etc., support to volunteers working in the ‘Petition Process for Days of Personal Observance’ announced by MTSD, to push Diwali as a holiday in 2015-2016 school calendar. Area Hindu temples should also join in to help.

Zed stressed that Hindu community felt left out in New Jersey as despite fast-changing state demographics and continuing growth of Hindu populations, only two public school districts had reportedly declared Diwali as a school holiday.

He noted that their ultimate goal was to introduce Diwali as holiday in all the over 600 school districts of ‘one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse’ states, and the community would make all out efforts for it. New Jersey should recognize diversity of

its communities as Gujarati, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, etc., are spoken in its various parts.

Rajan Zed argued that it was not fair with Hindu pupils and their families as they had to attend school on their most popular festival while many schools in the state were closed on holy days of some other communities.

Zed stated that since it was important for Hindu families to celebrate Diwali day together at home with their children, “we did not want our children to be deprived of any privileges at the school because of the resulting absence on this day. Closing schools on Diwali would ensure that and it would be a step in the right direction”.

MTSD has launched a multi-step “petition and ballot process for identifying days that might be considered for closing schools for the 2015-2016 school district calendar due to anticipated significant absenteeism.

In order to request that a specific day of personal observance be added to the Millburn school calendar, a petition must be submitted to the Board with 500 or more valid signatures of voting-age Millburn residents on or before September 30, 2014.”

For Diwali, MTSD has listed Padmaja Chinta as Petition Leader, assisted by Subadhra Vardharaj, Yashica Shah, Aarti Bajaj, Deepa Krishnan, and Tithi Majumdar.

hough he does not roar Aata majhi satakli with the same intensity that he did in the 2011 released Singham, in Singham Returns inspector Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) clearly makes his stance clear that the lion rules the roost. With the righteous police officer now posted in Mumbai, Singham Returns pays tribute to the 47,000 policemen of the Mumbai police force and heralds the wake-up call to wipe out corruption in our country.

The story is simple, staid and often seen. But what gives it a boost is the treatment. Rohit Shetty takes Singham Returns notches above the regular fare that is being dished out as entertainment in Bollywood’s action-comedy genre.

The graph of the narration accelerates when constable Mahesh Jadhav is found dead in a sunken ambulance stacked with currency notes. With the media slurring the dead constable’s character, and in the bargain tainting the police force, Bajirao Singham swears to investigate the case.

The leads point out to the deviously debauched and corrupt godman Baba (Amol Gupte) and the scheming head of the alliance party, Prasad Rao (Zakir Hussain), who soon have the virtuous mentor of the Bharatiya Lok Party, Guruji (Anupam Kher), killed.

Caught in the crossfire between the Swami-politician nexus and law, Singham dares and is supported not only by his superior, the Commissioner of Police, but also by his entire team.

The result is the obvious.

Speaking to the Mumbai audience in specific, the film has a universal message of eradicating corruption. It also unravels the frustrations of the law-keepers.

ARYLAND -- Law enforcement authorities appear to have reached a dead-end in their efforts to identify the killer of Rajinder Kumar, 49, who was manning the store at the Exxon gas station in Hanovar, Maryland.

Despite clear surveillance footage, the fact that the shooter wore a face mask has made it difficult to nail the shooter and the police hope his appearance and mannerisms may help someone identify or recall him.

The Baltimore Division of the FBI and Anne Arundel County Police are now offering up to $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the robbery and shooting.

Surveillance video shows the masked man entering the Exxon station store just after 1 am on August 7, drawing out a gun from his pocket as he enters, and shooting Kumar point blank. He then took cash from behind the counter, and ran out the store. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, black gloves and some sort of material covering his

lower face.

“We know we’re asking someone who knows the shooter to come forward, and that’s not an easy thing to do. But an innocent man was shot and killed for no reason,” Special Agent in Charge Stephen Vogt of the Baltimore Division of the FBI, said in a release.

According to the Anne Arundel police, the mask worn by the killer added to the difficulty of tracing him. “He had a mask unfortunately. We are hoping people who know this person by how he walks or his mannerisms will come forward. It was a cold blooded murder and there was nothing Mr. Kumar could have done to prevent it,” a polcie spokesman said.

Kumar is originally from Amritsar where his wife Rajni Sharma and two children Saurav and Sonali, were joined by the extended family and friends to mourn his death. In the US, Kumar lived in Glen Burnie, Maryland. His roommate, and others said Kumar worked at the gas station to earn a few extra bucks to send to his family in India.

HICAGO (IL) -- A Chicago police officer is facing sexual abuse charges after he allegedly kissed and fondled a 9-year-old girl and then threatened her mother.

Dennis Barnes, 61, is charged with one count of attempted predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under 13, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, all felonies, according to a spokesman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.

He was ordered held on a $100,000 bond in court on August 14.

Barnes, a sergeant with the Chicago Police Department, allegedly attempted to kiss and fondle the girl over the weekend.

Prosecutors said the girl was the daughter of one of Barnes’ friends.

After the girl told her mother what happened, Barnes allegedly threatened the woman, claiming he would harm himself and o thers.

A Chicago police spokeswoman said Barnes had been relieved of police powers and the case was under investigation.

Guv Quinn wants museum named after US Senator Alan Dixon

PRINGFIELD (IL) -- Governor Pat Quinn has announced a plan to name the Illinois State Museum Building in Springfield after the late US Senator Alan Dixon.

He initiated and is working with the Illinois General Assembly to pass a joint resolution making that designation official.

“Alan Dixon served with distinction on the local, state and federal levels and was an integral part of our state’s history for four decades,” Governor Quinn said. “Naming this building in his honor will help serve as a reminder of his lasting legacy of public service and his dedication to the people of Illinois.”

“This is a very fitting way to honor the career of Alan Dixon who served the residents of our state with honor and energy for decades.

I will be proud to sponsor this resolution,” Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan said.

“Alan Dixon’s legacy of bipartisanship, leadership and commitment to seeking the common good represents the best aspects of public service in our state and country,” Illinois Senate President John Cullerton said.

The Illinois State Museum at 502 S. Spring St. in Springfield will be named the Alan J. Dixon Building of the Illinois State Museum upon passage of the joint resolution.

Dixon was born in Belleville on July 7, 1927. He earned a law degree and served in

Late US Senator Alan Dixon the U.S. Navy during World War II. Dixon was elected one of the youngest legislators ever to serve in the Illinois House of Representatives and served as an Illinois State Representative from 1951 to 1963.

He served in the Illinois State Senate from 1963 to 1971, rising to the position of Assistant Democratic Leader.

He also served as Illinois Treasurer from 1971 to 1977 and Secretary of State from 1977 to 1981. Dixon served in the U.S. Senate from 1980 to 1993, and was chairman of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission in 1994 and 1995. Dixon died on July 6, 2014 and is survived by his wife, Joan “Jody” Fox Dixon, three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

AMPA (FL) -- A Florida businessman of Indian origin is suing his brother-in-law, a noted Indian-American philanthropist, for robbing him of of his due profit share earned by hosting a Bollywood film award show.

The ongoing legal dispute involving the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), US edition, has entered a contentious new phase.

Plaintiff Chetan “Jason” Shah has accused his brother-in-law Kiran Patel, a philanthropist and healthcare entrepreneur, of fraudulently adding his name to IIFA host committee official documents and later cutting him out of his share of the profits, the report said.

Shah, a Tampa Bay real estate professional, is suing Patel, who is credited as a top funder and organizer of the IIFAs, a series of Bollywood events held in Tampa Bay, Florida, in April.

Shah maintains being the rightful founder of the American edition of the awards show, and claims that it was him who persuaded event organizers to bring IIFA’s first-ever show in America. He claims Patel and other IIFA principals conspired to cut him out of event organizing and profits.

The four-day IIFA Weekend reportedly brought significant economic benefits to the Tampa Bay region. The event drew an estimated 30,000 visitors who generated over $26 million in total spending, according to a June 1 press release from the Visit Tampa Bay tourism organization.

In a July 3 court filing, , Shah claimed Patel coerced him into signing a document late last year just as Shah was being rushed to the hospital for heart surgery.

That document allowed Patel to negotiate a new deal with IIFA organizers that cut Shah out of any profits, Shah told the paper.

he Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finally acted tough on August 19 by clipping the wings of chief coach Duncan Fletcher following the team’s humiliating 1-3 Test series loss in England.

Fielding coach Trevor Penney and bowling coach Joe Dawes, who were hand-picked by Fletcher, were dropped and former India captain Ravi Shastri was appointed director of the team for the ODI series starting from August 25.

The BCCI earlier this year extended the contracts of both Penney and Dawes, along with Fletcher, till the 2015 World Cup. But in the aftermath of the team’s disastrous show in the five-match Test series against England, the board decided to drop Penney and Dawes.

Under-fire Fletcher, 65, just managed to save his job and now Shastri will be the overall incharge of the team.

Duncan Fletcher took over from South African Gary Kirsten after the 2011 World Cup and India haven’t won an away Test series under him.

“In culmination of the discussions among all the office-bearers over the last couple of weeks, the BCCI has decided to avail the services of former India captain Ravi Shastri to oversee and guide the Indian cricket team for the forthcoming One-Day International (ODI) matches against England,” said a BCCI statement.

Researchers have found clear evidence of an increase in cardiovascular deaths in heart attack survivors who exercise in excess.

They studied the relationship between exercise and cardiovascular disease-related deaths in about 2,400 physically active heart attack survivors.
