Here comes the Beast The US president’s Cadillac limousine will be part of the official entourage of US President Barack Obama, chief guest at this year’s Republic Day parade IANS, NEW DELHI

ll the top luxury hotels in Delhi have been scanned, the security is being worked out to the last minute detail, and, yes, The Beast will very much be part of the official entourage of US President Barack Obama, chief guest at this year’s Republic Day parade. It is learnt that an advance US security team would be in India around Jan 15 to fine-tune the security arrangements for Obama, the world’s most powerful leader. Though Obama visited India in 2010, the security this time would be more challenging as the US president would be seated in the open air on Rajpath for more than two hours to watch the Republic Day parade. In view of threats by Islamist militants after Washington launched air strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the security scenario has gained additional importance. A US Secret Service team would be in India next week to scour the luxury hotel where Obama and his wife Michelle would stay. US authorities have examined the top hotels in the capital including the two Taj hotels and Maurya Sheraton but nothing has been finalized, it is learnt. An idea of what Delhi can expect can be had from what transpired at the Marriott in Bris-

bane where Obama stayed for a night in November to attend the G20 Summit. Obama’s security ordered the stripping of an entire floor of the Marriott Hotel — clearing out the furniture and investigating every nook and corner. Security personnel removed bedding and furniture, including mirrors, from rooms. Other rooms were left with just desks and chairs as part of elaborate efforts to ensure Obama is not spied on.

The rooms were swept for bugs so that Obama can conduct confidential business and make private phone calls from within the hotel. US security agencies set up their own secure communications. The hotel was cordoned off and only those with accreditation were let in. Hundreds of staffers accompanying Obama occupied a number of floors at the hotel. Obama had traveled with a special portable security tent which could be set up in hotel rooms to allow him to exam-

ine classified material and hold talks. Obama reached Brisbane airport on board Air Force One and took off in his helicopter Marine One for Victoria Park. From there, he went in a cavalcade of 30 cars to Marriott. The chopper was accompanied by an advance team of three twin-rotor Ospreys and three other presidential helicopters. The president’s car, a Cadillac limousine, has been nicknamed “The Beast”. It is part of the US Secret Service classified motor pool.

The Beast’s armor plating is said to be eight inches thick and its doors weigh as much as those on a Boeing 757 aircraft. It has five-inch thick bulletproof windows with at least five layers to foil attacks. Its bus-size Goodyear tyres are Kevlar-reinforced and capable of keeping The Beast on the road for quite some distance if needed. The interior is sealed off from the outside to reduce risks of a chemical attack. A special foam surrounds the fuel tank to insulate it in the event of an impact, according to published reports. The Beast’s trunk is reported to contain everything from firefighting equipment and oxygen tanks to the president’s blood type. The Beast has three passengers the driver, the president’s lead Secret Service protective agent in the front passenger seat and, of course, the president himself. Four additional seats in the back are available. The drivers are highlytrained who can execute tight turns and other police-style evasion techniques, including turning 180 degrees in seconds. The Beast travels in a C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft wherever the president goes. A heavily-armored Chevrolet Suburban communications vehicle accompanies The Beast. Said to weigh 20,000 pounds, the car is said to be a guzzler of fuel.

India snubs US ‘certification’ of Pakistan Sony attack: US impose sanctions against North Korea IANS, NEW DELHI

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has signed an executive order, imposing new sanctions against the government of North Korea in response to what he called Pyongyang’s “numerous provocations,” particularly the cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment. The sanctions targeted three entities — Reconnaissance General Bureau, Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation and Korea Tangun Trading Corporation, as well as 10 individuals who work for the aforementioned entities, denying them access to the US financial system and banning them doing transactions with US citizens according to the US Treasury Department, Xinhua reported. The actions “will further isolate key North Korean entities and disrupt the activities of close to a dozen critical North Korean operatives,” US Trea-

sury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a statement. “As the President has said, our response to North Korea’s

attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment will be proportional, and will take place at a time and in a manner of our choosing. Today’s actions are the first aspect of our response,” the White House said. The US has accused Pyongyang of hacking Sony Pictures Entertainment over a comedy film “The Interview” that depicts an assassination attempt on North Korea leader Kim Jong Un. But North Korea has denied involvement, saying such claims were “a wild rumor”.

India, however, said how Washington chooses to spend US taxpayers’ money “is entirely its prerogative”. The ‘certification’ by the US makes Pakistan eligible for an aid package under the Kerry-Lugar Bill. The Bill has “actions against terror groups” as one of the conditions that Pakistan must fulfil to be eligible for aid from the US. It authorizes the release of $1.5 billion per year to Pakistan as nonmilitary aid. “India does not believe that Pakistan is showing sustained commitment or making significant effort or ceasing support or dismantling bases of operations of the Lashkare-Taiba, Jaish-e-Muhammad, the Haqqani network and quite possibly the Al Qaeda,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed

Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, was poisoned to death, says Delhi Police chief IANS, NEW DELHI

C

ongress leader Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar, found dead here nearly a year ago, was poisoned to death, Delhi Police said this week, triggering demands for his resignation from the Lok Sabha. Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said a murder case had now been registered against “unknown persons” and that the final medical report was clear that Pushkar, 52, died an unnatural death. “She died due to poisoning. Whether the poison was given orally or injected into her body is being probed,” he said, adding her viscera would be sent abroad. Ruling out suicide, Special Commissioner of Police Deepak Mishra said it was a case of “homicidal poisoning”. Tharoor, a former central minister who is the Lok Sabha member from Thiruvananthapuram, said he was stunned by the developments and assured full cooperation with police. Pushkar was found dead in a luxury hotel on January 17, 2014, a day after she and Tharoor checked in because their house was allegedly getting painted. Both had been married twice earlier. Tharoor was then the minister of state for human resource development in the Manmohan Singh government.

Attempt to implicate me: Tharoor NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said that a Delhi Police official had attempted to implicate him and a domestic help in the murder of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. In a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi dated Nov 12 and accessed by the media, Tharoor urged the police chief to take action against the concerned officer. Tharoor said that four Delhi Police officers interrogated his domestic help Narayan Singh last month — for 16 hours on November 7 and for 14 hours on November 8. On both days, Tharoor alleged that Narayan Singh was “repeatedly physically assaulted by one of your officers. “Worse, that officer used the traumatic physical assault to try and intimidate Narayan into ‘confessing’ that he and I murdered my wife,” the

A day earlier, Tharoor and Pushkar had issued a joint statement saying they were “happily married and intend to remain that way” following media reports that Tharoor allegedly had an affair with a Pakistani journalist. The Congress said it was not clear from Bassi’s comments if Pushkar killer herself or was murdered. But both the BJP and the CPI-M in Kerala demanded that Tharoor quit the Lok Sabha.

former central minister said. Tharoor recalled that he expressed his concerns to Bassi over telephone on November 8 night. “As you graciously agreed, such conduct is completely unacceptable and illegal,” Tharoor said in his letter. “It also amounts to the use of physical coercion in the attempt to frame an innocent man. “I would request you to take immediate and appropriate action against such unlawful misconduct of the officer concerned. “My staff and I have always made ourselves available for any kind of inquiry and investigation but the recent behavior of the officers towards my staff is a matter of serious concern to any law abiding citizen. “Please look into the matter personally and ensure that the unvarnished truth comes out in this case.”

The Delhi Police got the final medical report from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on December 29. Police sources told IANS the murder case was registered on January 4. The first autopsy report, submitted Jan 20 last year, said Tharoor’s wife died due to drug overdose. It reported a dozen injury marks on her body. A later autopsy report in July put the number of injury marks at 15.

All the injuries were caused by blunt forces except one which was an injection mark. Later, Sudhir Kumar Gupta, who headed the forensic team in AIIMS, alleged that he was pressured to show that Pushkar’s death was natural. The AIIMS denied the claim. Gupta was later moved out of his post. Meanwhile, a police team formed to investigate afresh Pushkar’s murder has started work, Bassi said. “The special team is looking into

each and every possibility of the case. Whatever is needed will be done,” Bassi told the media. Asked if Tharoor, a former central minister and now a Congress MP, would be questioned, he said: “We will do, if needed.” Informed sources told IANS that a Delhi Police team visited the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences in Thiruvananthapuram last month to speak to doctors who had treated Pushkar.

‘Produce four kids to protect Hinduism’

MUMBAI: A benchmark index of the Indian equities markets plunged to one of its biggest single-day losses this week as negative international cues such as weakness in global crude oil prices and on-going Greek crisis subdued investor sentiments. The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) ended the trade down 855 points or more than three percent on January 6. The fall was one of the biggest so far -- only lesser than the slump suffered July 6, 2009, when the Sensex dumped 869.65 points on US Fed tapering concerns The downfall came as emerging

Addressing a gathering of saints here on January 6, he reportedly said every Hindu woman must produce at least 4 children to “protect” the religion. community, he said: “The concept of four wives and forty children just won’t work in India but it is high time that every Hindu woman must produce at least four children to protect the Hindu religion”. The BJP MP sought to differentiate between conversion and ‘ghar vapsi’, the process of converting minority communities to Hinduism aggressively pursued by RSS affiliates. “Those who engage in conversion and cow slaughter should be punished with death penalty. But I must add here Ghar vapsi is no conversion but just a process to guide these people to the fair where they actually belong,” maintained the controversial MP.

Death of an idea, birth of an institution

The formation of the NITI Aayog brings the focus back on the country’s reforms process AMIT KAPOOR , NEW DELHI

T

he past week, apart from ushering in the New Year was also witness to the birth of a new institution in India. The formation of the NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog has brought the focus back on the country’s reforms process. The opposition, especially the Congress, termed its formation a “dangerous” idea and “an attack on the federal structure” of India’s polity while the CPI-M said that this would spur “privatization”. The ruling NDA responded by saying that the opposition was mere “politics” and those opposing it were “against development”. The new commission, right

from its nomenclature to its stated objectives, appears to be more in tune with the times and the overall economic landscape. For understanding the present and predicting (albeit inaccurately) the future, one often has to rely on the past. The planning experience in the Soviet Union, China and India point to similarities - and differences as well - are helpful in drawing fascinating insights about the nature of the planning process and how central planning as an idea appears to be dead. The State Planning Commission was nodal body for planning, and this was a just like Russia’s Gosplan in Russia. In 1982, the Commission for Restructuring the Economic System (CRES) was established for directing economic

reforms. In 1998, the SPC was renamed State Development Planning Commission (SDPC) which then merged with CRES and State Economic and Trade Commission. It was renamed in 2006 as Nation-

China no longer conceives itself to be a centrally planned economy but more of a socialist market economy. In India, the Planning Commission was established on March 15, with prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru as its chairman though its roots go back to 1938 when Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had been persuaded to set up a National Planning Committee. The First Five-year Plan was launched in 1951 and focused on developing the agricultural sector. In between the Indo-Pakistan Conflict of 1965, the planning process was disrupted but the Fourth Plan was formulated in 1969. The Eighth Plan commenced in 1992 after market reforms were initiated in 1991 by the then finance minister Manmohan Singh. Subsequent plans saw a lesser role for the public sector -

Padma awards losing their sheen VISHNU MAKHIJANIM, NEW DELHI

O

nce again a controversy has erupted over the Padma awards even before they have been officially announced with shuttler Saina Nehiwal, an Olympic bronze medalist, throwing a fit over not being considered and the sports ministry meekly caving in. The issue erupted with Saina tweeting her disappointment at her application not being considered for a Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award. “Friends, I am not demanding for the award... My question was why my name was not sent to the home ministry (sic),” she wrote. No doubt the home ministry procedures permit such applications - but is that really the best way for such awards to be conferred by the President of India? Doesn’t it amount to purchasing such awards and also downgrading

Shuttler Saina Nehiwal.

their sanctity? This apart, what purpose do these awards serve? Awardees can’t wear the medal - at best they can frame it, as also the scroll that comes along with it nor can they append it to their names as the uniformed forces can of the medals they are awarded.

To get back to Saina, the sports ministry said Monday it would recommend her name for the award “as a special case”. On Sunday, Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had maintained that he received Saina’s nomination from the Badminton

9

Association of India (BAI) only on Saturday. “The ministry has since received the nomination of Saina Nehwal for Padma Bhushan Jan 3 from Badminton Association of India,” the ministry said in a statement. “In view of the achievements of Saina, the Department of Sports has decided to recommend her case for Padma Bhushan to the ministry of home affairs as a special case although the last date for making the recommendation is long over.” Does this mean that throwing a fit is a criterion? Because Sania also raised the question of wrestler Sushil Kumar’s name being forwarded. Okay, so fight your own battle but why pull down someone else? Surely, this is not what Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, had in mind when he coined the expression: “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the strug-

and several public sector enterprises saw disinvestments. However, these were much more calibrated than the Russian economy that was seen as a prime reason for the 1998 crisis in the Russian economy. Subsequently, in India the role of the Planning Commission had been on the decline, amid the benefits people saw in a free market economy post the market reforms. It is in view of this historical evolution that Narendra Modi had scrapped the Planning Commission, the announcement being made during his maiden I-Day speech on August 15, 2014. The first day of 2015 witnessed the birth of the NITI Aayog. While some believe it is a cosmetic exercise, the fact that planning has been removed from the name suggests that the focus in the future will be on markets rather than governmental control. gle; the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” Now take the awards for sportspersons. A year ago, on Jan 3 to be precise, the sports minister issued fresh guidelines for selecting sportspersons for the Arjuna and other such awards. Henceforth, 90 percent weightage would be given to winners of medals at various international championships and sports events of disciplines covered by the Olympics (summer, winter and paralympics), the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Winners of medals in Olympics and Paralympics will automatically be considered for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna or Arjuna Awards, depending on the type of medal won, if they have already not been conferred with either of the two top awards. With these awards considerably losing their sheen, do they serve any purpose in this day and age? Perhaps the time has come to retain only the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, and do away with the rest.

S Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the US House of Representatives, feels the relationship between India and the US has been energized after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit and wants the two governments to work closely in countering terrorism, including cyber terrorism. “Terrorism is an enemy and a threat that doesn’t wear one country’s uniform or owe allegiance to one country’s flag, but rather exists in many different parts of the world. In order to defeat this threat, we (India and the US) will have to work together,” Gabbard, the first Hindu member of the US House of Representative, told IANS in an interview during a visit to the capital. “..And that includes the government and leadership of Pakistan taking a stronger stand and action against these terrorists,” Gabbard added. She hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama, during his visit here for the Jan 26 Republic Day celebrations, would discuss the urgency to press upon Pakistan the

need to take the terror threat more seriously. “Both our countries are focused on security. Both are focused on countering terrorism dealing with the growing threat of Islamic extremism . We must focus on seeing how we can collaborate to better defend ourselves against the cyber attacks that are increasingly becoming a threat,” said the 33year old, who is a combat veteran and also an ardent follower of the Bhagavad Gita.

Noting that Modi’s maiden visit to the US in September “energized the relationship between the two countries”, Gabbard said he had come with “a very clear vision and a plan to achieve his objective of where he would like to take India”. She said Modi’s vision struck a chord not just with the Indian diaspora but generated interest “from people involved with politics, in the private sector and those who are looking to participate in what appears to be a very exciting time here in India”. Gabbard, who was in India between Dec 16, 2014, and Jan 3, 2015, and met with Modi, Defense Minster Manohar Parrikar and Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar among a host of other leaders, said she always nurtured a special place for the land of Lord Krishna’s birth and hoped for greater understanding and respect for each others’ culture, traditions, and distinct style of doing business. Gabbard was born into a multicultural and multi-religious family of parents with Samoan and European roots. Fourth among five siblings, Gabbard embraced Hinduism as a teenager and became a student of the Bhagavad Gita.

inister for Overseas Indian Affairs Sushma Swaraj has called upon the diaspora youth gathered here to “come, connect, celebrate and contribute” to be part of the “momentous transformation taking place in the country”. Speaking at the inauguration of the 2015 Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) on January 7, Sushma Swaraj, who is also the External Affairs Minister, urged the diaspora youth to contribute to

the country’s development. “We want you, the Pravasis, to contribute to the development of India. We want you to participate in the vision that Prime Minister Modi has for India's future,” she said and enumerated the several programmes launched by the government, including the Make in India, Smart Cities, Swachch Bharat, and Skill India. She said the government has been working in mission mode to implement all these programmes. “You can contribute to them and become an active partner in these ventures. Our government is fully

committed to good governance, efficiency, accountability, transparency, and speedy decision-making.” The minister, addressing the diaspora youth at the Mahatma Mandir complex, said there are “tremendous opportunities today for you to join us, especially in the fields of manufacturing, infrastructure development, education, health, skills development, science and technology, research and innovation, knowledge economy and youth development as part of our effort to realize India's full potential”.

Describing the diaspora as “the most significant example of India's soft power”, Sushma Swaraj said the diaspora has “retained a bit of India” in their hearts. Though living thousands of miles away, you have “kept the spirit of Bharat alive”. The minister said the PBD is “an occasion to reflect upon your heritage, and to touch base with a country which will always consider you as one of its own, regardless of the colour of your passport or the land of your citizenship”. WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama acknowledged the “real” threat posed by the Sunni radical group Islamic State (IS) in an interview this week, but ruled out another trillion dollars in aid in the efforts to fight the extremist group. “I think we can’t underestimate the danger of ISIL,” the president told the National Public Radio (NPR), using another acronym for the group which has seized about one third of the territory in Syria and Iraq. Citing the group’s aspirations to control large swaths of territory and its possession of resources and an army, Obama said he saw “great dangers” posed to US allies and the threat to destabilize entire regions. “So I don’t want to downplay that threat. It is a real one,” he added. S

tating that urban governance is in a “very bad” shape, union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu asked municipal bodies to mobilize resources by levying taxes wherever necessary to improve basic civic amenities. Underlining the need for reforms for better urban governance to overcome the challenges of inadequate infrastructure and resources, he urged the urban bodies to improve physical and social infrastructure and ensure effective governance by involving people in planning process and inviting investments by the private sector. Addressing municipal commissioners of cities with a population of more than a lakh, he advised them to mobilize resources locally by levying new taxes wherever necessary after convincing people that they will get better infrastructure and services. BJP targets 10 million membership in Karnataka BENGALURU: The BJP has embarked on a massive drive to enrol 10 million people as its members in Karnataka over the next three months, party president Amit Shah has said. “As our main objective is to free Karnataka from the Congress rule, we have set a target of enlisting one crore (10 million) voters as our members by March. We have also launched an online drive to enrol even youth as our members,” he told reporters here. Noting Karnataka was the only big state in which Congress was in power, Shah said the state had elected 17 Bharatiya Janata Party MPs, enabling the party secure a majority in Lok Sabha and form the government. Out of the southern state’s 28 Lok Sabha constituencies, the Congress won nine and Janata Dal-Secular two. “It is important for us to rebuild the party in the state and win back the people’s confidence to unseat Congress in the next assembly elections. The membership drive will help us in strengthening the party and expand its base in the state,” Shah said. Party’s state unit president Prahlad Joshi said the party would enrol 10 lakh members in the first phase of

better future. He made it clear that the municipal bodies should not expect thousands of crores from the central and state governments. “Government has no money but they will not say so and make all promises,” he said. Referring to former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s famous remark “money doesn’t grow on

trees”, Naidu said it was a harsh statement but a fact. Stressing the need for transparency and accountability in their functioning, he suggested that every municipal body should tell people what is its revenue and expenditure and what are its plans. “People feel that the taxes go for paying salaries to employees and for

providing facilities to leaders. They will come forward to pay taxes if you convince them that it will be used for their betterment,” he said. “You have to be brutally clear in your approach saying without people’s participation, without paying taxes things will not improve,” he told the commissioners. Stating that he will introduce credit rating system for all municipalities, he suggested them to raise loans from banks and national and international financial institutions by improving their credit worthiness. The minister asked the municipal bodies to take up digitization of properties, revenues, assets and other details, saying the central government will provide the necessary funds for the project. Naidu said Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants all municipal bodies to start a website and a weekly electronic news digest, giving details of its activities and prepare a list of the poor. Advocating the need for devolution of more powers to urban local bodies, the minister said they should frame their own laws, rules and regulations for better governance.

Jadeja is nursing a shoulder injury sustained during training in the early stages of India’s ongoing tour of Australia. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee met in Mumbai today (Tuesday) and selected the Indian team for the Tri-series between India, Australia and England to be played in Australia from the 18th of January,” Sanjay Patel, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said. “The Indian team for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 to be played in Australia/New Zealand from February 2015 was simultaneously selected.”

Sanjay Patel also said that pacer Ishant Sharma, left out of the team for the fourth Test at Sydney Tuesday due to an injury, would be fit for the tri-series and the subsequent World Cup. “Ishant has a temporary injury with which he is doing well. The skipper, however, stated that there was no injury concern about Saha and he was fit to play in the fourth Test starting Tuesday. “There’s nothing wrong with Saha but ... something might happen tonight, he might get a stomach bug. Can you guarantee that you will walk out of his room now and not get a twisted ankle? “Saha is playing …MS is on standby,” added the prolific middle order batsman. Dhoni’s decision to quit apparently came as a shock to his family members as it is believed that even they did not know about it before he announced it to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Kohli captained the side in the first Test at Adelaide and impressed with his aggressive style. He almost led the team to victory but a batting collapse in the final session cost India dear.

According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, Sridhar had been a student at Rutgers, but left in the fall term. He was set to return to Rutgers in the spring 2015 semester. Indian American students enjoy USC Games Day BY A STAFF WRITER

NGELES (CA) -- At a USC Games Day held on the USC campus December 10, Indian American students were heavily represented in the latest presentation of videogames created by the University of Southern California Games Program. “We have always had many talented Indian students in our courses and on our teams,” said Mike Zyda, director of the USC GamePipe Lab. The collaboration between the School of Cinematic Arts and the Viterbi School of Engineering Department of Computer Science helped make USC the No. 1 ranked game design school in North America in 2014 by The Princeton Review. USC Games hosted two events unveiling student-designed games. “We have such a range of games— in virtual reality, two screen experiences, mobile and more. I’m so proud of this year’s cohort because they are really stretching themselves and innovating in the field,” said Tracy Fullerton, director of USC Games, chair of the School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media and Games Division and director of the USC Game Innovation Lab.

(L-R): Indian American Students Aishwarya Venkatesh, Manan Bakshi, Kevin Macwan, Milind Doshi, & Priyanka Vaishnav.

The GamePipe Laboratory Fall Showcase, also held at the same day, celebrated GamePipe’s tenth anniversary and featured over a dozen games. “Over 1,500 computer science students have graduated from our program and gone on to make games played by over 880

million players. These alumni have helped built games that have made over $45 billion in revenue over the last ten years. It is doubtful that there is another academic games CS program that has had this size of an impact on the game industry,” said Zyda.

GET COVERED, STAY HEALTHY

C

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO, IL -- There’s a wellknown expression “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away” that highlights the importance of a balanced diet as a way to avoid getting sick. It’s important to know that in addition to diet and exercise, screenings, vaccines and tests are preventive services available today that can do even more to promote healthy living. These services are all included with all health plans that can be obtained through the Get Covered Illinois (GCI). This is why GCI is urging people to explore their coverage options through the Marketplace and enroll in a plan. A key to staying healthy is that once you have coverage, you have to use the benefits available, especially these important preventive services that can actually help keep you from getting sick or getting injured. All private Marketplace plans cover essential health benefits, including everything from hospitalization and laboratory services to prescription drugs, management of chronic illnesses, and routine doctor visits. Additional benefits include family planning,

maternity and newborn care, mental health, outpatient services, habilitative/rehabilitative services and devices, and pediatric care. “We know that these essential health benefits and preventive services are critical to to a healthier Illinois,” said Jennifer Koehler, executive director, GCI. “No one plans to get sick or hurt, which is why routine visits with a medical expert are crucial. Regular check-ups with a doctor help you keep track of your overall health, as well as give you peace of mind.” After enrolling in coverage, residents should take these three next steps to make sure they’re on the right track with staying healthy: --Find a doctor within your insurance company’s network --Schedule your first appointment,

UPCOMING

making sure to ask about what to bring to the appointment --Prepare for your visit by bringing the necessary paperwork and documentation, making a list of any medications you take, and preparing questions you have for your doctor about your health According to the Department of Health and Human Services, more than 121,000 people enrolled or re-enrolled in a healthcare plan in the first month of enrollment for the second year of GCI, which means that more than 800,000 people in Illinois have obtained health care coverage since October of 2013, when the first open enrollment period began. With only several weeks remaining in the Open Enrollment Period, Illinoisans are encouraged to call the GCI Help Desk at (866) 311-1119 to schedule an appointment for free, in-person help from a trained professional near you. In order to begin February with coverage, residents must enroll before January 15 and the deadline for open enrollment is February 15. Those who remain uninsured after the deadline may be subject to a fine on their 2015 taxes.

Fired unfairly, says UA crew BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- For years, the threat of terrorism-- and the fear that threat often engenders--has loomed large in the airline industry both for passengers and airline staff. That fact was made clear yet again earlier this week when 13 flight attendants for Chicago-based United Airlines filed a complaint with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration claiming they were unfairly fired from their jobs on October 9 and 10 last year. In their complaint, the United flight attendants said the firings of all 13 came after they refused on July 14, 2014, to work United flight No. 869 from San Francisco to Hong Kong because of their collective concerns about a possible security threat to the Boeing 747 aircraft they were supposed to fly. As the complaint spells out, the flight attendants still refused to work the flight after being issued a direct order to do so by their supervisor--which prompted United to fire all 13, who together had more than 299 years of flight attendant experience. The flight attendants’ concerns for the safety of the crew and some 300 passengers booked on Flight 869 on July 14 stemmed in large part from the words “Bye Bye” that were found scrawled on the tail cone of the plane along with drawings of two faces--one of which was said to be smiling, while the other had a more troubling expression. It’s unclear based on the information in the complaint when the graffiti was first discovered and who first found it. As the complaint also noted in great detail, once the crew became aware of the graffiti, there was much subsequent back and forth among United Flight 869 crew and ground staff about what was discovered on the plane’s tail, how it possibly came to be there and when it might first have been put there.

Farah’s ‘Bigg Boss Halla Bol’ a big hit!

‘I didn’t pay him to slap me’

W

ell done” — that’s Salman Khan’s message for choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan, who is now hosting “Bigg Boss Halla Bol” series, an extension of “Bigg Boss 8”, which the superstar was hosting until recently. The last episode of “Bigg Boss 8” was aired Saturday, and it marked the arrival of “Bigg Boss Halla Bol”, where five challengers from past seasons of the show are seen competing with five “champions” from the eighth “Bigg Boss” season. “Well done farah, well done,” tweeted Salman, who had to leave the show due to his film commitments. Despite his absence from “Bigg Boss”, Salman says he’s going to keep a close watch on the show and its contestants, and through his television. The actor took to Twitter to share a close shot of his television screen. It featured the remaining contestants of the show.

G

auahar Khan’s attacker has alleged that the actress paid him for slapping her in public. But the actress says it is the “most ridiculous claim”. In November last year, Gauahar, who was hosting a reality show in Mumbai, was slapped by Mohammad Akil Malik for reportedly wearing skimpy clothes. And now, Malik has alleged that he was paid to slap her and that she had promised to get him a role in a film. “This is my one and only response to the most ridiculous claim made by an accused who attacked me, went to jail for it and came out only to prove even more what a threat he is to normal living in India for girls, and also the weak stature even the media gives to a girl who especially belongs to the film or TV world,” Gauahar said in a statement. “What this man is claiming is a clear attempt to get away from the heinous crime he committed. It’s absolutely bogus and a very poorly staged and filmy story obviously recommended by people who believe that our law will let him get away with such baseless stories,” she added.

irthday girl Deepika Padukone is not done with her vacation yet. The pretty lady who was earlier seen enjoying an exotic holiday in Maldives with rumored beau Ranveer Singh was reportedly celebrating a quite birthday with him in New York. According to an entertainment website, Deepika — who turns 29 on January 5 — has taken off for the Big Apple with her Bajirao Mastani co-star. The much talked about couple apparently also celebrated this day together last year, and in the same city. Deepika has much to celebrate this year. One of the hottest stars in Bollywood today, she not only delivered two

ctors Karishma Tanna and Upen Patel might seem to be very close to each other onscreen but they are “just friends”, clarify the former’s mother and sister who came to visit her on the sets of an ongoing reality show. “They are very good friends. I have full confidence in my daughter, I am sure she will not do anything wrong,” says Karishma’s mother Jasmina. “She is very firm with her herself and knows why she is in the show,” adds Karishma’s sister.

Jacqueline keen to work with Aamir

fter romancing one of Bollywood’s most eligible bachelors Salman Khan in the film “Kick”, Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez is now keen to work with ‘Mr. Perfectionist’ Aamir Khan, who is currently enjoying the success of his recent release “PK”. Jacqueline was present at the launch of fashion photographer Dabboo Ratnani’s 2015 calendar in Mumbai this week. Here, on being asked about working with Aamir, Jacqueline said: “I want to work with as many amazing actors as I can, because that will only help me to grow as an actor. “And of course, it is on everyone’s wish list to work with Aamir Khan because his movies always have strong content and he is a fantastic actor,” she added. On the film front, Jacqueline will be next be seen opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in “Roy”.

commercial hits last year - Happy New Year and Kochadaiiyaan - but was also part of the critically acclaimed Finding Fanny. Once they return from NY, they will start working on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s big film Bajirao Mastani.

asundhara Kashyap is the latest victim of having her private pictures leaked all over the internet. Vasundhara, who debuted in Vattaram opposite Arya, has been the talk of the town for her selfies that have flooded the internet. The images that have been leaked online are reported to be of Vasundhara and her boy friend. Jennifer Lawrence fell prey to her private images being leaked online which also made her the most searched celebrity on Google.

‘I’ a step forward for me as an actor: Vikram MUMBAI: Southern superstar Vikram, who promoted his film I here, said it’s a step forward for him as an actor. The actor who will be seen in different looks in the film said: “Body building took me three years to achieve that body for the film. My family was worried because for one character I had to gain weight and for different character, I had to lose 20 to 25 kgs.” “My family was really worried and it was tough to convince them. (But) this film is going to be a step forward for me as an actor. I get to play four different characters in this film. I grew up doing stage shows in school and I wanted to do something out of the box. I am blessed to do something like this,” he added.

IANS, CHENNAI

ctor Anisha Singh, who was last seen in 2012 Telugu film Ayyare, has landed an important role in upcoming romantic-comedy Beeruva. Having almost disappeared for the last two years, she hopes to hog the limelight with the film. “I started working on a Telugu film with Shivaji after Ayyare. But it got shelved for some reasons. Then I was offered Beeruva, and I was told that it was an interesting project. I thought I might as well do something to get recognised as an actress,” Anisha told IANS. In Kanmani-directed Beeruva, Anisha plays a role with grey shades. “It’s something that expected me to play dumb, stupid, sexy and slightly grey under some circumstances. It’s an exciting role and I really hope it gets me into the limelight,” she said. She shares the screen space with Sundeep Kishan in the film. “It was amazing working with Sun-

deep. It’s a wonderful learning experience to work with a young team” she added. Post Ayyare, Anisha did a lot of rethinking about her career. “When I did Ayyare, I was just a newcomer. I didn’t have the right contacts nor knew anything about the industry. But I did that film thinking it was good. Unfortunately, it didn’t do well at the boxoffice. Because of which I wasn’t getting any offers,” she said.

Like to move audiences with my films: Mysskin CHENNAI: Overwhelmed with the response to Tamil paranormal thriller Pissasu, which is currently running in cinemas, director Mysskin says he likes to move audiences with his films than merely entertain. “I’ve always made films to move audiences. Entertainment means to hold attention but it’s not about songs and dance. Audiences have to completely lose themselves in a story and that’s the kind of film I like to make. I’m happy Pissasu has achieved that,” Mysskin told IANS. Pissasu, a compassionate love story with paranormal touch, has turned out to be a successful ven-

ture. The film, which features newcomers Naga and Prayaga Martin, has raked in over `40 million, in its first week in Tamil Nadu.

FILM REVIEW | TELUGU

‘Meaghamann’ — all guns blazing

J

ust like in the game of chess, how a move by your opponent might totally catch you off guard, the proceedings in Magilzh Thirumeni’s impressive action film Meaghamann achieves that. Interestingly, most of the film’s characters are inspired by chess pieces — king, rook, bishop and pawn. In the climax, when Siva (Arya) locks horns with the villain, Jothi, played by Ashutosh Rana, he slyly whispers in his ear “checkmate”. Both Siva and Jothi are

Film: ‘Meaghamann’; Cast: Arya, Hansika Motwani, Anupama Kumar, Ashutosh Rana, Sudhanshu Pandey, Harish Uthaman and Sanjana Singh; Director: Magilzh Thirumeni; Rating: *** kings in their own world and that’s what makes them equally strong, unlike stories in which the hero always has the upper hand. The chess reference in the story

is quite evident and Magilzh uses it very effectively to highlight some important moments.

In another scene, Jothi is shown playing a game of cards on the road, and he repeatedly ends up picking up the king to symbolically highlight that he’s the king. Arya plays an undercover policeman in a drug cartel. A man on a mission, he has no distractions even when the heroine desperately tries to know more about him. The film would’ve worked better even without a romantic track but this is Tamil cinema, and we’re used to the idea of having a heroine just for the heck of it even if it’s not necessarily needed. Arya is an extremely busy man, so he doesn’t waste time in singing duets with Hansika. But there’s one intimate number as part of a figment of Usha’s imagination.

Flavor your party

with new age cocktails From delicious pani-puri to scrumptious cupcakes, vodka mixers have gone through a huge evolution IANS, NEW DELHI

P

lanning a party can often be confusing, especially when you have no idea what drinks to serve the guests. Try five new age drink mixes that are easy to make. Smirnoff, one of the largest vodka brand in the world, brings you five vodka trends with new age mixes: * Popsicles: Mix 30 ml Smirnoff orange vodka with 90ml tonic water and evenly pour it into popsicle trays or cups. Insert a popsicle stick and leave it to freeze overnight. * Tabasco and Dark Chocolate: Take 30 ml Smirnoff Black with ice and a dash of tabasco and dark chocolate. The boldness and smoothness will leave you asking for more. * Vanilla and Vodka Cupcakes: Yes, you read that right. Cupcakes may have been the rage when it comes to food trends, but now vodka-infused cupcakes are the next big thing. Try making vanilla cupcakes by replacing one out of two teaspoons of vanilla extract with Smirnoff vodka. * Pani puri: Vodka pani puri is

Mumbai's street staple with a twist. Add Smirnoff classic vodka to the spicy pani puri water, and you have a zesty snack-cum-drink waiting to be devored. Add 30 ml vodka to 250 ml of pani puri water. This provides 10 pani puris.

Look beyond smoky eyes for parties IANS, LOS ANGELES

T

he party season is still not over, so forget the same old smoky eye make-up. Try other interesting looks instead. Whether you’re heading out to a party or planning a night at home with friends, the following looks will help you to look good, reports peoplestylewatch.com. * Shimmery eye shadow: If you’re all about glitter and glitz, then a shimmery eye shadow is the perfect look for you. Just coat your favorite copper shadow on your lids. Then, to really make your eyes pop, brush on some silver shadow in the inner corners and skim a brown eyeliner on the lower lash line. Then brush on a couple of coats of mascara, and you’re good to go. * Exaggerated cat eye make-up: Cat-eye liner is a universal make-

up trick that looks great on just about everyone. But the exaggerated version? It’s a little harder to apply during the day, but it’s the perfect look for a party-filled night. * Bright, bold lip: Leave the lip gloss at home and instead opt for a darker and richer hue. Just add a swipe of your favorite dark lip stain (red, wine or plum) to your pout before heading out to pair with your winged-out liner or shimmery eyes.

*Penne ala Vodka Sauce: A smooth, creamy sauce made with tomatoes, cream and a splash of vodka — Vodka sauce is becoming increasingly popular. Be sure to add some vodka to your pasta for sharp taste and a touch of heat.

sincere, well timed "thank you" for customers can reap huge rewards for companies, says a marketing scholar from Michigan State University. According to the study which focused on an upscale sit-down restaurant, satisfied customers who received an acknowledgement of their comments from the company president increased patronage to the business by more than 50 percent. The simple gesture of thanking customers was just as effective - and less damaging to the company's bottom line - as acknowledgements that included rewards in the form of gift cards and guaranteed

reservations. "These findings suggest that simple, sincere gestures are enough to drive feelings of gratitude among consumers," said Clay Voorhees, associate professor of marketing and lead author of the study. Voorhees and his fellow researchers tracked patrons' attitudes and behaviors for a year after they gave the eatery high marks. While firms routinely collect customer feedback, few act on this information. Further, little attention is given to managing feedback from highly satisfied customers. Within a week of completing the online satisfaction survey, customers were sent a thank you email from the company president.

Stay healthy in 2015 with proper diet, right exercise LOS ANGELES: Looking to shape up in the New Year? Check your diet, pick exercises wisely and more. Fitness expert Tracy Anderson shares how to stay in shape, reports people.com. l Be honest with yourself about the body you want: Have a real conversation about where you’re at with your health. You need to find exercises with some sort of strategy behind them, a strategy for how you want your body to look and perform. l Exercise five to seven days a week: If you don’t work out one day, you’re going to stay the same or gain weight. We need to get used to taking care of our bodies. We spend five minutes a day brushing our teeth, and teeth are tiny in comparison to the rest of our bodies. So if teeth take up five minutes of your day, the rest of your body can take up 30 to 60 minutes. l Diet and exercise go hand in hand: If you have weight to lose, you have to train yourself to be good at exercise. And diet is definitely important, but it’s not about calorie restriction. Avoid processed foods, and include foods that as are as close to nature as possible, as well as greens and superfoods like mulberries. l Create a good playlist: Working out to music is something that people need to do.

Three Earth-like planets up there, says NASA Of more than 1,000 verified planets found, eight are less than twice Earth-size and in their stars’ habitable zone IANS, WASHINGTON

I

n a major find, NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope has discovered three new Earthsize habitable or “Goldilocks” zones around Sun-like stars. Of the three, two are likely made of rock like our Earth. Of more than 1,000 verified planets found by Kepler, eight are less than twice Earth-size and in their stars’ habitable zone. All eight orbit stars are cooler and smaller than our Sun, the US space agency said in a statement. “Three of the newly-validated planets are located in their distant Suns’ habitable zone, the range of

distances from the host star where liquid water might exist on the surface of an orbiting planet,” informed John Grunsfeld, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Two of the newly validated planets, Kepler-438b and Kepler442b, are less than 1.5 times the diameter of Earth. Kepler-438b, 475 light-years away, is 12 percent bigger than Earth and orbits its star once every 35.2 days. Kepler-442b, 1,100 light-years away, is 33 percent bigger than Earth and orbits its star once every

112 days. Both Kepler-438b and Kepler442b orbit stars smaller and cooler than our Sun, making the habitable zone closer to their parent star in the direction of the constellation Lyra. “Each result from the planethunting Kepler mission’s treasure trove of data takes us another step closer to answering the question of whether we are alone in the Universe,” Grunsfeld noted. The Kepler team has also added another 554 candidates to the roll of potential planets, six of which are near-Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of stars similar to our Sun.

Beauty products contaminate pools! IANS, WASHINGTON

new study suggests that apart from urine, pharmaceuticals and chemicals from personal care products end up in swimming pools and may impact your health. These chemicals interact with chlorine to produce disinfection byproducts with unknown properties. Swimmers are exposed to chemicals through three different routes. “You can inhale, you can ingest and it can go through your skin. So, the exposure you receive in a swimming pool setting is potentially much more extensive than the exposure you would receive by just one route alone,” said Ernest R. Blatchley III, professor at the Purdue University in the US. Previous research has shown that

iets rich in cocoa flavanols — bioactives found naturally in cocoa — can help arrest age-related memory decline in healthy adults, a study shows. “The results of this study are encouraging — they support the idea that diet, and specifically a diet rich in cocoa flavanols, can play an important role in maintaining cognitive health as we age,” said lead author Giovambattista Desideri from the University of L’Aquila in Italy. The study involved men and women aged 61-85 years. They were assigned to one of three flavanol groups, consuming a

Your week ahead... Aries Aries, the Full Moon on Monday falls in your career, university and non-profit role zone. It describes a conflict inside you, or outside you. Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal, but Ceres will also enter this chart zone on Thursday.

Taurus Taurus, you always come back to the same question – who or what runs your life, when you travel, study, teach, use the internet, write, publish or deal with foreign people? Maybe a combination of all those factors drives the control issue!

Gemini January is crucial for your house, flat, money, possessions, business, charity and/or company. Whatever does not fit, or sit right, near Monday is going to motivate one of the biggest changes of the new year.

Cancer The focus is squarely on your former, current or potential partner. Perhaps on an enemy, opponent or rival. Deal with the naked power issue and don’t be afraid of it; it really matters to him/her and of course to you!

Leo Your daily workload and your body are the focus of Monday’s Full Moon and as you are ruled by the Sun, this is personal. A former, current or potential partner (or enemy) is at the heart of delays and changes until March 3.

Virgo A Full Moon in the Fifth House of your chart accents a serious sexual relationship; a parenting role; youth projects; all the babies, children or teenagers in your world. Have Plan B for work or body plans.

drink containing either high (993 mg), intermediate (520 mg) or low (48 mg) amounts of cocoa flavanols every day for eight weeks. Among those individuals who regularly consumed either the high- or intermediate-flavanol drinks, there were significant improvements in overall cognitive function after eight weeks. As cognitive function was normal for this aged population, the study showed that even cognitively healthy individuals can quickly benefit from the regular inclusion of cocoa flavanols in their diets.

(January 5-11) Libra Mercury is Retrograde Shadow in your zone of serious sexual relationships, babies, children and teens from Monday. Don’t be fooled as the process in motion will stall and go backwards by first week of March – protect your plans.

Scorpio Please don’t assume anything will be straightforward with your plans for the house, family, flat, home town, homeland, or household. The planet of information, communication and transportation is all over the place for the next eight weeks.

Sagittarius Sagittarius, it looks as though a carve-up is unavoidable with the money, house, flat, business, charity or possessions, and that feeling of incompleteness or dissatisfaction felt around Monday’s Full Moon must be acted upon.

Capricorn Capricorn, there will be a zig-zag pathway with your cash, house, flat, business, company, charity or possessions (or maybe these in combination) until the first week of March, so please read the fine print and get everything in writing.

Aquarius Mercury Retrograde Shadow in your sign from Monday suggests your name, reputation, image, brand, identity or appearance will be at the heart of the usual changes, delays or reversals for some weeks. January is crucial.

Pisces Pisces, the year points to a major rethink of your social life, social media, group project and old friendship, with an honest appraisal of your own need for control – or his/her/their need for power – helping every step of the way. —Jessica Adams
