proud naval aviator who survived years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and going on to become a Republican congressman, senator from Arizona and a two-time contender for presidency, John McCain died after a battle with a malignant brain tumor. He was 81.

The son and grandson of Navy admirals, he was born on August 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone.

He was diagnosed last year with the tumor, called glioblastoma, for which he had been treated periodically with radiation and chemotherapy since its discovery in 2017.

His family had announced earlier this week that he was discontinuing medical treatment.

During three decades of representing Arizona in the Senate, he ran twice unsuccessfully for president, reports The Washington Post.

He lost a bitter primary campaign to George W. Bush and the Republican establishment in 2000.

McCain then returned to win the nomination in 2008, only to be defeated in the general election

by Barack Obama, a charismatic Illinois Democrat who had served less than one term as a senator.

US to defend against Iran lawsuit over sanctions: Pompeo ‘No war-ending declaration with N.Korea before denuclearization’

S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on August 27 that Washington will defend itself in a case brought up

by Iran in The Hague to protest the US exit of the landmark Iran nuclear deal, and US re-imposition of sanctions that were lifted under the deal.

In a statement, Pompeo said that Iran’s filing with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) “is an attempt to interfere with the sovereign rights of the US to take lawful actions, including re-imposition of sanctions, which are necessary to protect our national security”.

Iran brought the case to the United Nations’ highest court last month to challenge the US decision to leave the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and to reimpose the sanctions that were

suspended as part of that deal, Xinhua reported.

Earlier on August 27, the opening day of court hearings in The Hague, the Netherlands, Iran requested that judges at the ICJ order the immediate lifting of US sanctions.

‘Congress allegations on Rafale falsehood’ Dismissing Rahul’s allegations, Arun Jaitley says aircraft price was at least 20% cheaper than finalized by the UPA IANS, NEW DELHI

ejecting Congress allegations of a scam in the Rafale fighter jet deal as “complete falsehood”, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the aircraft price with weaponry and India-specific adaptations was now at least 20 per cent cheaper than that finalized by the UPA government.

udget passenger carrier SpiceJet this week successfully operated India’s first test flight partially powered by bio-fuel.

A mix of 25 per cent bio-fuel and 75 aviation turbine fuel (ATF) powered a SpiceJet Q400 turboprop aircraft on the 200 km flight from Dehradun to Delhi.

SpiceJet termed the operation India’s first-ever “BioJet Fuel” flight. It pointed out -- reduction in carbon emissions and enhancement of fuel efficiency -- as advantages of using “BioJet fuel” as compared to ATF. The bio-fuel type made from the Jatropha crop was developed by the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), a constituent of the Council for Scientific and

Subsequently, 25 per cent of bio-fuel blended with ATF powered one of the two engines of the Q400 aircraft for the over 40minute-long flight.

The aircraft ferried 28 on-board, including the crew and regulatory officials. It was received by Cabinet ministers and airline officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 2.

At an event to mark the success of

the test flight, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu said that the central government plans to come out with an environment friendly aviation action plan till 2035.

On the policy front, Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari said that a cabinet note on the standardization and use of biofuel blended with ATF will be prepared by Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Gadkari elaborated that biofuels obtained from non-edible seeds will aid in employment creations, import substitution, making transport costs effective and pollution free.

As per IATA, aviation industry contributes to 2 per cent of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the world, which will rise as the sector expands.

hile countering Pakistan’s latest attempt to raise the Kashmir issue at the Security Council, India has said that it hopes the new government of Prime Minister Imran Khan would work constructively to build the region and free it from the scourge of terrorism.

“Pacific settlement (of disputes) requires pacific intent in thinking and pacific content in action,” India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin said Wednesday at the Council suggesting a new approach for the new government.

“Regurgitating failed approach which has long been rejected is neither reflective of pacific intent nor a display of pacific content,” he emphasized after Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Maleeha Lodhi suggested the Council should resuscitate initiatives on Kashmir from 70 years ago.

“We hope that the new government of Pakistan will, rather than indulge in polemics, work constructively to build a safe, secure and developed South Asian region free of terror and violence,” Akbaruddin said.

The session on mediation and settlement of disputes was presided over by Tariq Mahmood Ahmad, the British Minister of State for the Commonwealth and the UN. Lodhi referred to decades-old failed Council efforts and invoked the 1948 Council resolution setting up the UN Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) for

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin.

Last week, the Supreme Court of Canada rejected Byrne’s appeal against $1.2 million granted to the NRI businessman by the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 2016.

India pins hope on Imran New Delhi counters Islamabad’s bid to raise Kashmir at UN

hile countering Pakistan’s latest attempt to raise the Kashmir issue at the Security Council, India has said that it hopes the new government of Prime Minister Imran Khan would work constructively to build the region and free it from the scourge of terrorism.

“Pacific settlement (of disputes) requires pacific intent in thinking and pacific content in action,” India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin said Wednesday at the Council suggesting a new approach for the new government.

“Regurgitating failed approach which has long been rejected is neither reflective of pacific intent nor a display of pacific content,” he emphasized after Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Maleeha Lodhi suggested the Council should resuscitate initiatives on Kashmir from 70 years ago.

“We hope that the new government of Pakistan will, rather than indulge in polemics, work constructively to build a safe, secure and developed South Asian region free of terror and violence,” Akbaruddin said.

The session on mediation and settlement of disputes was presided over by Tariq Mahmood Ahmad, the British Minister of State for the Commonwealth and the UN. Lodhi referred to decades-old failed Council efforts and invoked the 1948 Council resolution setting up the UN Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) for

JAKARTA: A confident India womens hockey team will be vying to win the gold medal after a long wait of 36 years when they take on Japan in the final at the 18th Asian Games here on Friday.

India won the gold medal in 1982, the year women’s hockey was first included in the Asian Games programme. They reached the final for the second time in 1998 when they lost 1-2 to South Korea. They bagged bronze medals in 2006 and 2014.

India has remained undefeated throughout the tournament, registering victories against Indonesia (8-0), Kazakhstan (21-0), South Korea (4-1) and Thailand (5-0) in the pool stages and securing a hard-fought 1-0 win against Chinese team in the semi-final. induism, the world’s oldest religion, has no beginning— it precedes recorded history.

It has no human founder.

It is a mystical religion, leading the devotee to personally experience the Truth within and reaching the pinnacle of consciousness where man and God are one. Hinduism has four main denominations—Saivism, Shaktism, Vaishnavism and Smartism City of Lombard near Chicago prepares to host the three-day World Hindu Conference (WHC) 2018 from September 7th through September 9th, 2018. Held every four years, WHC offers the global Hindu community a unique opportunity and platform to exchange ideas over its cultural, philosophical, and entrepreneurial depth across the globe. “WHC also serves as a platform to address critical issues impacting Hindus worldwide, including human rights, discrimination, and cultural assaults,” explains the conference’s official website.

In many ways, Hinduism is getting Americanized. That makes it surprising that no distinctly American Hindu gods or goddesses have yet emerged. This may reflect the fact that immigrant Hindus still look to India for authority

and tradition. The process of ritual adaptation is evident in other ways as well. Hindus in the United States commonly give their rituals a symbolic interpretation. It may have to do with immigration or modernization.

Nevertheless, Hindus in the United States give their rituals a metaphorical meaning, more so than their Indian counterparts.

Hinduism came to the United States first in the American imagination and only second with emissaries and immigrants from India. The initial features of Hinduism that captivated North Americans were those that were lauded for their compatibility with Protestant Christianity and those that were derided for their incompatibility with the same. The Hinduism that flourished in the North American context drew heavily from the neoVedantic theology of monism, which was propagated by Hindu reform movements in the 19th century.

Immigrant Hindus in the United States contributed knowingly, and unknowingly, to certain trends in the development of American Hinduism.

Hindus did not migrate to America in large numbers until after 1965, when changes in U.S. immigration law allowed—even encouraged—the professionally trained among them to do so. American Hindus still did not come to the attention of mainstream Americans until increasing number of Hindus immigrant started building temples and gathering publicly for worship. Hinduism and Hindus were changed as a result of the migrant experience.

These new immigrants were overwhelmingly well-educated and trained in high-paying professions.

Sociological pressures encouraged the development of an ecumenical type of Hinduism in the U.S. This ecumenical Hinduism tended towards the use of Sanskrit and English in ritual contexts (rather than regional languages) and united “deities, rituals, sacred texts, and people in temples and programs in ways that would not be found together in India”.

Socio-cultural factors in the U.S. contributed to the development of an ecumenical Hinduism tolerant of regional, linguistic and sectarian differences. In the U.S., Hindus are frequently called upon to explain to others what “Hindus believe”. Hindu

conform to other dominant religious ritual norms in America, encourage entire religious communities to gather together regularly on the weekends.

Hindus take their children to the local temple nearly every Sunday morning, so they will have an answer to non-Hindus.

In the 20th century, the population of Indian Hindus immigrating to the United States increased and began to challenge the status quo. These Hindus were not gurus or yogis who were interested in developing followings among white audiences. They were families concerned about maintaining their cultural and religious traditions.

They also came from diverse regions of India, and they brought their sectarian and regional practices and devotions with them. After the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act, Indian Hindus worked diligently to create community networks by establishing temples and religious organizations. These religious spaces provided the infrastructure to maintain and further ethnic identities as well. In most cases, Hindu temples and organizations continue to be internally focused on providing resources to communities of Indian Hindus, such as language and scripture instruction, social support networks, ethnic food, and pan-Indian and regional festivals and events.

Outside traditional forms of home altars, temple worship, and festivals, there are many ways in which Hinduism has influenced American culture.

The guru movements that flourished in the countercultural spiritual experimentation in the 1960s continue to draw followers today. In fact, the guru field in the United States has diversified significantly, and many gurus have established successful ashram communities across the nation.

The New Age movement of the 1990s also brought rekindled interest in

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST Hinduism, often re-coded as Indian spirituality, and this has sponsored a new wave of gurus and their teachings and the rampant expansion of postural yoga practice in the United States.

Imaginaries of Hinduism (1790– 1893) The image of Hindus and Hinduism arrived at the shores of North America long before significant populations of Indian Hindus did. As a result, the story of Hinduism in North America begins with white Americans and their imaginings of Hinduism. In addition to commerce, Christians from North America were some of the first missionaries to establish residence in India in 1800-1900.

In the early 19th century, Raja Rammohan Roy, who became the founder of the Brahmo Samaj in 1828, became the first Hindu whose monistic interpretations of Hinduism became popularized in the United States.

Rammohan Roy understood that Hindu customs were viewed alternately with abhorrence and fascination by the American onlookers. In response, he formulated a new Hinduism focused on scriptures, with which he aimed to rebut the scathing critiques of the missionaries. Americans balked at what they viewed to be the bloody, sexualized, cacophonic, ritualized, and superstitious practices of the Hindus. As in the broader field of orientalist discourse, American publications and popular opinions oscillated between disgust and fascination, condemnation and attraction, disavowal and allure. At this time, the majority of North Americans accessed information about Hinduism through books and publications, rather than contact with Hindus.

QQHindu Preachers From 1893–1965

on behalf of Hinduism. Vivekananda introduced Hinduism, he explained the singular, omnipotent, formless God who resided at the heart of the most ancient Vedic tradition. He declared that there was no polytheism in India, only the misunderstandings of uneducated people. He validated the fundamentality of the Vedas and, drawing from them, explained that “the Hindu believes that he is a spirit” and that his “soul” is not “bound by the conditions of matter” but instead is “free, unbounded, holy and pure and perfect.” He told his American audiences that the doctrine of love in the Vedas teaches us to worship “the pure and formless one,” “the All-mighty and the All-merciful,” through love.

He also championed Hinduism as a religion that has taught the world “toleration” and “universal understanding” and believes all religions to be true. Vivekananda was instrumental in popularizing the neoVedantic view that all religions are “the same light coming through different colors, But in the heart of everything the same truth reigns.” He was vastly influential in spreading his reformist vision of Hinduism in the United States, but also he began to develop a following of disciples who were interested in the practical methods behind his philosophical teachings.

In the United States, Vivekananda’s legacy found a home in the Vedanta Societies that he established and that continue to flourish in the present day.

The structure in San Francisco that is frequently identified as the first Hindu temple in the United States, established in 1906. Despite restrictive immigration policy and nativist public sentiments, several Hindu emissaries from India entered the North American scene to build on Vivekananda’s legacy.

O w i n g t o r e s t r i c t i v e U. S . immigration policy, Hinduism could not enter into mainstream America as anything other than a caricature of its Indian expressions for decades.

The Hindu leaders who did enter the United States during this period and the singular institution of the Vedanta Society struggled to extract followers from mainline American religions.

QQ1.Temples

After 1965, the Immigration and Naturalization Act caused immigration from India to increase by 2,800 percent.

For the first time in U.S. history, Indian Hindus arrived in significant numbers. When these immigrants arrived, they found limited resources for the expression of traditional forms of Hinduism available in the United States. Despite their educational status, they often found themselves bound by stereotypes of their ethnic and religious heritage and sometimes persecuted by expressions of individual and institutionalized racisms.

Whatever the factors, Hindus in the United States gather together in large numbers for common worship experiences, usually on the weekends.

Moreover, while temples in India are often privately established and endowed, in the United States, temple development more frequently follows the other religious groups pattern whereby groups of people incorporate, elect executive board members, solicit volunteer labor, and conduct fundraisers. This voluntaristic model is in many ways distinctly American, and certainly not the norm in India. Related to these changes in Hindu American life is the growing importance of the temple community itself. Whereas in India most rituals are conducted in the domestic setting, individually or in small groups, temples are slowly coming in the United States to rival homes as the focus of ritual activity.

Even festivals which are largely observed in the home in India, such as Deepawali, are just as frequently now celebrated at the temple. The important reason for this is that temples in the United States have become centers of cultural celebration and preservation, as well as places for Hindu Americans to find one another, network, and build friendships. In India temples do not need to perform these tasks.

“The temple is more than a religious institution, it is a cultural center, a place

for dialogue, a place for Indian adults to reaffirm their heritage, for their children to discover who they are”. In USA Life-cycle rituals (samskaras), of which there are traditionally around sixteen, are also difficult to manage. In America, the list of sixteen samskaras often gets pared down to seven or eight; many U.S. Hindus observe only the four or five samskaras, they deem most important. These rituals are also performed in Temples under the religious guidance.

Temple building became one of the primary means by which Indian Hindu communities sought to assert their presence in the American religious landscape and foster centers for the expression of cultural and religious values. Once Hindu communities had found their footing in the American context, one of the first communal dreams was often the establishment of a temple wherein Hindus could worship but also where they might connect with each other and teach their children about Hinduism.

Despite their regional differences, Hindus soon found that they needed to band together in expressions of communal solidarity. Some of the first temples established in the United States hosted a variety of Hindu deities, deities who would have been separated by sectarian or geographic traditions in India but who were hosted together in temple complexes in the United States.

The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago hosts Shaivite, Vaishnavite, and Devi images and figurines.

As Hindu populations increased in strength, diversity, and financial resources, this physical expression of ecumenism decreased. In New York, Texas, and New Jersey, where there were concentrations of Hindu populations, sectarian groups began to raise capital in order to support temples dedicated to specific sectarian traditions.

As of today, there are approximately 450 Hindu temples in the United States.

One of the most important additions to the temple architecture of Hinduism in the United States has been the rapid expansion of BAPS Swaminarayan Hinduism. Significant populations of immigrant Indian Hindus in the United States are from the Indian state of Gujarat, the birthplace of the modern guru Swaminarayan. BAPS Swaminarayan Hinduism began as a guru devotional movement, but it soon became articulated as a branch of traditional Hinduism. It has also strategically focused on building elaborate and ornate temple complexes in major urban centers. As a result, BAPS Swaminarayan temples have become tourist attractions and highly visible representations of traditional Hinduism around the globe.

They have become epicenters for the Hindu community and cultural and religious ambassadors of Hinduism for the general public. Their emphasis on the glories of Vedic culture, traditional gender roles, and conservative (and sometimes political) Hinduism has also influenced Hindu thought in the United States considerably.

The influx of temples in the United States provided expressions for the devotional and ritualistic aspects of Hinduism that had been largely ignored in the U.S. context in institutional arenas. While previous generations of Hindu immigrants had maintained the custom of domestic shrines and altars,

now temples became primary sites wherein to host devotional rituals and festival occasions honoring particular Hindu deities. Temples established forums for these devotional and ritual activities, as well as sanctuaries for the performance of life-cycle rituals— marriages, funerals, first feedings, sacred thread rites, and so on.

They also became congregational centers for community networking and development. Often times, temples established curricula for the study of Hindu scriptures and other cultural heritage preservation activities, such as language classes, cooking classes, workshops providing immigration information, and community development. Spaces is used as hosting congregational gatherings on Sundays that involve preaching and hymns.

Temples often host priests (pujari) from India to live in residence, which fosters transnational relationships between Hindu communities in India and in the United States.

QQ2.Organizations

The 1980s and 1990s signified a major milestone in the “institutionalization of Hinduism” in the United States. 27 Hindu immigrant communities in the United States became particularly motivated to establish Hindu resources, such as educational materials, student networks, and defense organizations in response to their children’s exposure to negative stereotyping. Religious and cultural allegiances are a critical influence on identity formation in the dislocated context of the immigrant experience. The hybrid or hyphenated identity that emerges (Indian American/ Hindu American) from the adoption and valorization of native culture and religiosity confirms the appropriate ethnic status on immigrants now positioned in culturally recognizable intellectual spaces.

After 1965, Hindus established organizations that aimed to unite Hindus in North America and to connect diaspora Hindus with Hindus in India. In efforts to connect with politics affecting Hindus at home, many organizations were formed modeled after contemporary Indian organizations. These organizations are an integral branch of the nationalist Hindutva ideological project; they also work to unite, represent, and advocate for all American Hindus. These umbrella Hindu organizations are one of the most vital arenas for the construction of Hinduism in North America, because they are explicitly engaged in knowledge-building projects, from elementary curricula to monitoring the production of Hinduism through academic publications and universitylevel instruction. Encyclopedia of Hinduism is one example.

This emphasis on controlling the educational instruction about Hinduism largely derives from a fear of misrepresentation. In the United States, many Indian Hindus continue to be dismayed and offended at the manner in which their religion and culture have been presented in elementary, secondary, and university publications in the United States. Sometimes school textbooks contain factual errors and racist stereotypes. They argued that the representation of Hinduism is a caricature comprising no more than “caste, cows, and curry.”

populations, are products of American multiculturalism.

QQ3.Gurus (1965–Present)

After 1965, the USA opened borders to a wide assortment of gurus who arrived from India to advocate for Hinduism. Many Gurus– A.C. Bhakti Vedanta Swami Prabhupada (ISKON), Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Bhagwan Rajneesh (OSHO), Swami Muktananda, Swami Satchidananda, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (Art of Living), Mata Amritanadamayi and many others. Each of these gurus brought particular theologies and methods to bear on Hindu traditions. Each of them attracted both Indian Hindus and non-Indian Hindus to their followings.

Gurus had derived their teachings from Hinduism Contemporar y gurus have multifaceted and varied relationships to their parent tradition of Hinduism.

They espouse their distinct theologies and practices but flavor them with ecumenism, fostered by the ideal that all religions are ultimately one. In many of these cases, the gurus have even gone so far as to eschew the term Hinduism, if not the Hindu roots that inform their ideologies and methods.

Instead, in efforts to attract non-Hindu followers, many have chosen to identify their movements as spiritual, or even as secular and scientific. The result has been the proliferation of guru-led movements and organizations in the United States that are best referred to as Hindu-derived or Hindu-inspired.

Unlike the majority of Hindus around the world, Gurus, their devotees and their organizations focused their attention on spreading their religious views to strangers. Several of these guru-led communities established s i g n i f i c a nt a s h r a m s ( re l i g i o u s hermitages) that housed temples, dormitories for devotees, schools, classes, and retreats. Some of them were open and welcoming toward the general public, while others were protectionist and exclusive to devotees only. The most historically significant were the Vedanta Societies, Hollywood, CA; Paramahansa Yogananda’s SelfRealization Fellowship, Encinitas, CA; Bhagwan Rajneesh (Osho)’s ashram complex, Rajneeshpuram, in Oregon; ISKCON’s New Vrindaban in West Virginia; Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Maharishi University in Fairfield, IA; and Kripalu’s ashram in MA, Mata Amritanandamayi’s large ashram in San Francisco, CA as well as dozens of others across the country. Shree Ma, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Shirdi Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Baba, Muktananda, Nithyananda, and many other gurus have established centers across USA, which have contributed to the increasing institutionalization of Hindu-inspired, guru-led religions in the United States.

QQ4.Yoga

Many of the gurus drew their practices in some fashion from the Indic teachings of yoga. Yoga is a multifaceted term that is used in many different contexts and draws on Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. In Hindu scriptures, such as the Bhagavad Gita, there are several paths to liberation. In these cases, the paths themselves are referred to as Yoga: Bhakti Yoga is the path of devotion, Karma Yoga is the path of action, and Jnana Yoga is the path of knowledge. Some gurus have

advocated for the path of Kriya Yoga, the path of contemplation.

In popular USA parlance the term Yoga has begun to signify modern Postural Yoga. The postural yoga draws from multiple Indic religious traditions, not only Hinduism, and that the yoga curricula implemented in the Encinitas public schools were largely secularized and not Hindu in content. In order for Hindu ideas to become accepted into mainstream American culture, many of their non-Indian Hindu proponents have erased term Hinduism in favor of terms like spirituality, yoga, and meditation. The result is that many ideas derived from Hinduism are not attributed to Hinduism, and this continues to foster debates about religious misrepresentation and erasure in the public sphere.

QQ5.Literature

The literature regarding Hinduism in the United States is still developing as a distinct subfield to the study of Hinduism, gurus, and yoga more generally. As a result, much of the literature that addresses forms of Hinduderived religiosity in the United States is located within research studies that may include sections on the United States but are focused on India or globally.

Literature on Hinduism focused on 20th-century and contemporary Indian Hindu communities in the United States have contributed broadly to the sociological understanding of Hinduism within the analytical frame of immigration and religion.

QQ6.Social Pressure and Acceptance

First generation Indian immigrants rarely discuss issues of racism publicly.

As beneficiaries of the law of 1965, the upper middle class, well-educated Indian immigrants who came to the United States mostly accepted the “model minority” label placed on them and other minority groups whose educational and economic achievements outpaced those of the white, American born majority. Race is often only addressed in terms of ethnicity, national origin, or some generalized experience of “foreignness” or marginality. Thus, experiences that may otherwise appear to have involved racism are interpreted to be about “accents” and “pungent food”.

The American society, who had been exposed to the Hindu religion through American and their sensationalized accounts of the putatively “Hindoo” practices of sati, child marriage, and the Jagganath festival. Americans were clearly suspicious of the people associated with this religion, conflated all Indians with Hindoos, and imagined the “Hindoo race” as unassimilable in American society.

Those of the first generation may not always recognize or admit to recognizing racism in the American context, their children, who have very much grown up in an American society that reproduces racialized social structures, are better equipped to identify it when they see it, and are more likely to name it as racism when they experience it. The second generation still bears the weight of the “model minority” label and isn’t always ready to admit experiencing racism in the context of its religious experiences, but is certainly more likely to do so than the immigrant generation. The first generation, in contrast, either ignores

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST experiences of racism or reacts to them, by embracing the ideas of Hindu nationalists.

The Development of an American Hinduism provides perhaps the most extensive treatment of the relationship between Hindutva and Hindu Americans of Indian origin. The majority of Hindus of Indian origin participate in religious practices and are involved in religious communities that do not publicly accept the ideology of Hindutva.

In this age of economic globalization and instant communication, it is far more accurate to assume that there are stronger ties- social, cultural, and religious connections across national borders. Providing American communities with access to seminars and conferences would explain and answer to the myths and mystery surrounding the Hindu religion.

une police brought back revolutionary writer P. Varavara Rao to Hyderabad on August 30, a day after the Supreme Court ordered the police to keep the activists arrested for alleged links with Maoists confined to their homes till September 6.

Varavara Rao, who was arrested on Tuesday, was brought back early by a flight and placed under house arrest. Police made tight security arrangements around his house in Gandhi Nagar area.

Rao was taken into custody by a team of the Pune police after eighthour long searches at his residence and the houses of his family members. His family was told that he was arrested in a case relating to the alleged plot by Maoists to

NTR’s son dies in road accident HYDERABAD: TDP founder NTR’s son and actor-politician Nandamuri Harikrishna died in a road accident in Telangana’s Nalgonda district this week. He was 61.

Harikrishna, a former Rajya Sabha member and a former Andhra Pradesh Minister, sustained critical head injuries when the car which he was driving overturned near Anneparthi. The vehicle was flung in the air after hitting a divider and crashed into another vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

Harikrishna was not wearing the seat belt. He was thrown out of the vehicle and sustained head injuries, later succumbing to it.

Besides Rao, other activists across the country, including Kranti, Stan Swami and Anand Teltumbde, were raided in the major operation that is part of the ongoing probe into the involvement of Maoist supporters into the Koregaon-Bhima riots.

The raids took place at 10 places in Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Haryana.

he Kerala flood disaster has claimed 483 lives and the estimated value of destruction “is more than the annual outlay of our state”, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vjayan said on August 30.

Initiating the debate at a special one-day session of the Assembly to discuss the disaster, Vijayan said 14 people still remained missing although flood waters have receded from almost all parts of the state.

He added that at the height of the floods, the worst to hit the state in a century, there were 14.50 lakh people in more than 3,000 relief camps.

Hitting out at the government, senior Congress legislator V.D. Sateeshan, whose constituency Paravur in Ernakulam district was submerged, called it “a man-made tragedy”.

“This is not a natural calamity, instead a man-made tragedy due to the faulty handling of the dam water management. Dams in the state were overflowing and the primary reason for this tragedy is the way the dam waters were indiscriminately let out,” he said.

“Several dams were opened at

midnight. The need of the hour is to fix responsibility and find out who all are responsible for this.”

Thomas Chandy, a former Minister who represents Kuttanadu in Alappuzha, one of the worst hit districts, asked Vijayan to release the Rs 10,000 that the government had promised as interim relief to every family without delay.

K.M. Mani, a veteran opposition legislator, applauded the rescue efforts but said the tragedy could have been avoided had there been a proper dam management policy.

“Now that the tragedy is over, rehabilitation work has to take a systematic approach,” he said.

Mani added that money pouring into building a new Kerala should be collected in a separate account.

Daman Singh Bagga and Piyush Mishra as the retired, Pakistani Police Officer Usman Afridi, return as a comic pair. Their onscreen chemistry is palpable and they keep you in splits with their poker face but funny banter.

Denzil Smith is flawless as the sleazy antagonist Adnan Chow camouflaging as a suave and erudite businessman. How he teaches the Chinese to appreciate things that are Indian, makes for a good laugh.

Jason Tham as his lackey Chang, Aparshakti Khurana as Happy’s runaway-fiance Aman, have their moments of on-screen glory and they leave an indelible mark as actors.

Mudassar Aziz’s writing is fascinating. His dialogues are packed with punch as he plays with words, in Hindi, Urdu and smattering of Chinese this time. —Troy Ribeiro

ctress-model Lisa Haydon was widely trolled for sharing a photograph of herself as she breastfed her son Zack last year. She says there were many times she faced “uncomfortable” questions and comments, but she still stands by the fact that it is healthy for mothers to breastfeed their babies.

New mothers across the globe have been shamed for breastfeeding their babies in public.

Lisa, who gave birth to Zack last year, told IANS: “I certainly felt uncomfortable at times when I was asked if I was still breastfeeding my baby and it had only been four months. Some people told me I am not a cow, my baby should not feed off me and there were many things that made me feel uncomfortable to do it, not so much ashamed.”

Lisa said that for her, it was “not necessarily a responsibility or duty”, but it’s something that came naturally.

ctress Disha Patani this week said she has not walked out of any project with Hrithik Roshan, contrary to media reports blaming the Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai star of scaring her off with flirtatious behavior.

Disha shot down what she called “childish and irresponsible gossip about Hrithik sir and me” via social media.

“I would like to say it’s completely untrue and in the minimum interaction that I have had with him, he has been one of the most dignified and joyful people. It’s my regard for him as a person that is making me even respond to something like this trivial.

“There is no truth in me walking out of any project with him,” she wrote.

‘Nobody wants to cast me in films’

upermodel-actor-fitness enthusiast Milind Soman says filmmakers do not cast him more often in their films perhaps because he does not have a good network in mainstream Bollywood.

“Nobody wants to cast me in films, yes that is true. I do not know why, but that is the reality,” Milind told IANS. “Once in a while, film offers come to me and I do that. I am interested in performance though...

I like acting. It is a well-paid job and according to some people, I am good at it,” he added.

Milind had famously featured in the music video Made In India. He also featured in films like Bheja Fry, David, Bajirao Mastani and Chef, along with some TV shows like Captain Vyom, Noorjahan and Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi x 3.

‘I haven’t achieved any milestone yet’

ctor Amit Sadh, who started his career in showbiz with TV show Kyun Hota Hai Pyarrr over 15 years ago and recently featured as a hockey player in Reema Kagti’s film Gold, feels he has not achieved any milestone in his professional life yet.

“Honestly speaking, I haven’t achieved any milestone till now. I don’t even believe in milestones nor do I have any dream of achieving some milestone. I believe in working hard and to keep flowing,” Amit told IANS. Starting his journey with daily soaps to paving a path in Bollywood with films like Kai Po Che and Sultan, Amit has no qualms about returning to the small screen.

Indians Paraded on Devon Ave with Pride and Patriotism

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO,IL- Pioneer organization of Indians in Chicagoland area FIA celebrated 72nd India Independence Day spanned over three days. The efforts and the outpouring of Indians on Devon area attending parade in more than thousand in number. The community renewed its trust and support in FIA with a hope that it will be reformed and revived to its original past glory.

Federation of Indian Associations (Chicago) organized three days event celebration of 72nd India Independence Day under the leadership of FIA President Dr. Sanhita Agnihotri and continuous support of executive board and sponsors. The Star attraction was Mohammed Azharuddin who graced both the event and it was made possible by the efforts of FIA trustee Iftekhar Shareef.

The auspicious day of 15th August was celebrated at Daley Center in Down Town Chicago. The tri color flag was unfurled high by the team of FIA executive board and trustees.

The event started with national anthem of India and USA. The event was presided by Alderwoman Debra Silverstein. In her addressed to those present to witness the celebration that her ward has substantial number of Indians and business houses owned by them. She proclaimed that Indians in USA are excelling in many fields including Health, IT, Education and Corporate leadership.

The event was opened up by event Chair Keerthi Ravoori and co-chair Ranjit Ganguly. In his address Keerthi informed the significance of Independence Day for Indians even though most of us are born well passed Independence in 1947.

Dr. Sanhita Agnihotri extended the warm welcome to those in attendance and have trickled and assembled to witness the amalgamation of culture, music, dance and display of Indian Pride, Nationalism and Patriotism. She thanked City of Chicago for their support and office of Consul General for their support and guidance.

To showcase the rich cultural heritage of India, dance part of event was emceed and crisply organized by Prachi Jaitley and her team of Indian Classical Dance exponents. The young Indian American children displayed their skill and dancing on the tunes of patriotic songs.

Many dances and songs in Hindi were the

attraction of the downtown diversified cultural fabric of India.

Iftekhar Shareef, trustee of FIA, concluded the event with the vote of thanks. Amit Jhingaran of State Bank of India and Hemant Brahmabhatt of Hi India graced the stage. Many community leaders graced the event including Kanti S Patel, Bhailal Patel, Babu Patel, Sharan Walia, Satish Dadapogu, Vijender Doma, Pradeep Shukla, Ajeet Singh, Harish Kolasani, Saloni Dar, Jyoti Singh and Shafeeq Khaja.

FIA – Chicago – Gala Banquet of Independence Day, a yearly event to wait for was celebrated on Aug 17, 2018 at Meadows Club, Rolling Meadows. The distinguished guests who graced the event included – US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Consul General Neeta Bhushan and many elected US officials. The star attraction of the vent was former Indian Cricketer Mohd. Azharuddin (Ex Captain and Ex MP).

The event started with lamp lighting and national anthems of Karma Bhoomi (USA) and Janma Bhoomi (India). The event was emceed by Saloni Dar who introduced dynamic President of FIA Dr. Sanhita Agnihotri to address the accomplished and distinguished assembled guests. Dr. Agnihotri read the event report for the whole year and the completion of yearly vision statement. She informed about donations to homeless on Christmas day, immigration camp at Lemont Temple with the help of highly experienced attorneys Mazhar Shah Khan and Vishal Chhabria.

She also put forward her vision and plans for the coming months and years to be followed by other incoming executive team in future.

She welcome Consul General and invited her to address.

US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who in his ever smiling and baritone voice welcomed all and humorously informed that being a small number in US Congress they referred themselves as Samosa Caucus- Though small in number but very effective. He felt proud that Indians own 50% of hotel rooms in USA, more than 10% doctors are of Indian origin. It was his proud moment of being Indian American and a successful model community.

Mafat Patel in his address to guests put emphasis on the national pride and torch of patriotism has to be passed on next generation. He also mentioned that being Indian itself is a matter of pride, privilege and honor. Babu Patel was honored with the Life Time Achievement Award for his un tiring,

selfless services to Indian Community and FIA. Attorney Salman Azam was recognized and awarded as Professional of The year. Kanti N Patel’s award was received by Kanti S Patel.

The community award was presented to Jayant ShankaDas Patel– a highly accomplished businessman and community leader.

The event was graced by many patriotic and classical dance presentation by Surya Dance Academy, Reena Rockers, Shingari School of Rhytham /Chinu Thomas Group and Alokita Dance Group. Shree Guruswamy and Harish Kolasani were instrumental in putting together the dances.

More than four hundred guests, executive

board and participants enjoyed the event which was summed up with many Bollywood songs by highly talented and accomplished singing duo Raju Bankapur and Pratibha Jairath. Both of them kept the audience spellbound for more than two hours with their melodious voice and great selection of songs.

The pivotal point of the event – The Parade on Devon Ave- mini India in Chicago, was taken out on Aug 18, 2018. The parade began with Indian flag hosting at Devon-Western Ave and singing of anthems by Indians. The Indian Americas in colorful dresses thronged the streets to participate and watch the parade. People were mesmerized and were eager to know more about

the day. Talk of the town was the passion of Indians.

The parade walked through Devon Ave with many US elected officials including US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Cook County board of commissioner Chuy Garcia, Secretary of State Jesse White, Dorothy BrownCook County Clerk and many other including President Dr. Sanhita Agnihotri along with her executive board and trustees of FIA. The parade was graced by Mohd Azharuddin and Prachi Tehlan – upcoming Bollywood Actress, Amit Jhingran – State Bank of India.

The parade has more than sixteen decked up floats occupied by enthusiastic Indian American – young and not so young alike. The Comed Truck and Tumbler Team of Jessie White and their acrobatics were closing act of India Show Casing Parade. Though people on either side were thin in attendance, but were full of national fervor. FIA need to be more innovative in their approach to attract more in attendance. It will be possible through Devon merchants and other sponsors.

At the reviewing stage at the corner of Devon – Western dignitaries reviewed various floats from different associations and different parts of India. Dr Sanhita Agnihotri along with Iftekhar Shareef, Kanti S Patel, Ranjit Ganguly and Anil Pillai described floats, their significance and their role in India and its Independence.

The parade was summarized with a positive comment by President Dr Sanhita that FIA has survived through many storms, where many FIA insiders and outsiders flexed their muscle and tried to diminish the strength. She said that there is strong possibility that FIA will showcase stronger and better events, parade and people in attendance.
