rime Minister Narendra Modi told United States Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel that he looked forward to his visit to the U.S. in September that would provide “an opportunity to see how the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy can build a partnership for peace, stability and prosperity in the world”. “The prime minister welcomed the sustained high-level engagement by the United States with the new Government in India,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.

During the talks, Modi expressed

Hagel briefed Modi on the announcements by President Obama on the steps that the US plans to take to deal with the situation, the statement said.

Modi also noted that early completion of the presidential election process in Afghanistan and a smooth transition of power is essential for sustaining progress towards peace, stability, democracy and development in that country.

“Great nations need organizing principles, and ‘don’t do stupid stuff’ is not an organizing principle,” she said.

Making his second visit to Jammu and Kashmir in less than two months, Modi also vowed to take the country’s war against terrorism to “a logical conclusion”.

Hopping from one venue to another before returning to the national capital, the prime minister announced `80 billion to build four major road projects in Jammu and Kashmir.

Apex court gets four new judges NEW DELHI: Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Justice R. Banumathi, Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant and senior advocate Uday Umesh Lalit on August 13 became the judges of the Supreme Court. They were administered the oath of the office by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha. With the four new judges, the existing strength of the apex court judges has gone up from 26 to 30. The apex court has a sanctioned strength of 31 judges. Before his elevation, Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre was the chief justice of Gauhati High Court.

New gas price by end-September NEW DELHI: The government on August 13 said it will come out with a new natural gas pricing formula by end-September that would take into account the interests of investors and the public.

Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the Rajya Sabha that the NDA government had decided to review the gas pricing formula keeping in mind pub-

lic interest and the recommendations of the concerned Standing Committee of parliament. The new formula will be announced by September 30, the minister said replying to questions in the upper house. The existing gas price under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) was approved in 2007 and was to remain valid up to March 2014.

Supreme Court now has 30 judges

Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad assured members that the government does not have any intention of interfering in the functioning of the judiciary.

The law minister also moved an amendment to change the number of the constitution amendment bill from 121st to 99th, which was passed by the house.

While the judicial appointments commission bill was passed by a voice vote, the constitution amendment bill was passed after a division, with 376 members voted in its favor.

It is necessary for a constitution amendment bill to pass by a twothirds majority.

The bills will now have to be passed by the Rajya Sabha before they are sent to the president for his assent, after which they become acts. The two bills seek to scrap the collegium system of appointing judges and set up a commission for this.

The bills propose that the Chief Justice of India will head six-member National Judicial Appointments Commission, other members of which would be the law minister, two senior Supreme Court judges and two eminent people.

A collegium comprising the prime minister, the chief justice of India and the leader of the single largest party in the Lok Sabha will select the two eminent people.

One eminent person will be nominated from among the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs, minorities or women.

Will Priyanka say yes to politics?

T

here is little doubt that by declining to join “active” politics, Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra will not only cause huge disappointment to her growing body of supporters in the Congress, but may also undermine the party’s chances of revival.

To her followers, she represents the last and perhaps only hope of the party’s recovery following its demoralizing defeat in the AprilMay general elections. Accustomed to looking only at the Nehru-Gandhi family to lead them, Priyanka’s supporters evidently turned to her when it seemed abundantly clear that neither party president Sonia Gandhi nor vice president Rahul Gandhi was the answer to the organization’s travails.

While Sonia Gandhi has been largely spared any direct criticism, except from writers of books on current affairs, Rahul Gandhi has been the target of considerable carping, ranging from being called a “joker” to being surrounded by rootless wonders with little understanding of Indian politics.

However, there was a suggestion that both mother and son should take a two-year sabbatical, an unusual observation in a party which has acquired the reputation of being run like a feudal household with its retinue of servile courtiers.

This was also the closest any party member had ever come to saying that Sonia Gandhi was not the answer to the party’s problems and that the organization could perhaps be better off if she kept out of the way for some time along with her darling son.

In this depressing context, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra aroused the most expectations. The reasons have long been obvious. Between the three — mother, son and daughter — Priyanka has been seen as the most naturally endowed with leadership qualities in being articulate and, most importantly, without any hangups in the matter of reaching out to the peo-

If anyone was looking for signs of confirmation of Sonia Gandhi’s wish to pass the baton to her son, that uncharacteristic intervention in parliament was the moment. It is probably not a coincidence that within two days of the incident, Priyanka announced her intention to stay away from active politics, which virtually amounted to her “retirement”.

The haste may have been occasioned by the announcement by a relatively unknown Congress spokesperson that all three members of the dynasty will be in the leadership. There have also been reports that Priyanka may be made general secretary in charge of the party in Uttar Pradesh.

These statements probably reflected the wishful thinking of Priyanka’s supporters rather than any decision taken by the party. But, arguably, the Congress president did not want the speculations to spread any further.

There are several reasons for putting a lid on the rumors. One is that Rahul’s image will suffer if there is a clamor for Priyanka to play a major role. As the former Congressman, Natwar Singh, has said in his autobiography, Rahul does not have “fire in the belly”.

Another reason why all the gossip had to be scotched is the close personal relations between brother and sister. Priyanka evidently realized that if she is pushed to the forefront by a section of the party men, a rift cannot but appear between the siblings which will be highly distressing for everyone in the family.

The former deputy speaker called on all political movements to believe in the constitution and in the democratic political process and to sit down together, not to form a government, but to develop a national determination to deal with our problems.

He also asked for the cooperation of allied nations and international organizations to fight the jihadist Islamic State (IS).

WASHINGTON: At least 130 additional U.S. military advisers have arrived in Iraq to help with the humanitarian aid in northern Iraq, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said. Ebola: No panic among Indians in WA ACCRA: There is no panic movement out of West Africa by Indian nationals living in the region following the spread of the Ebola virus disease, officials of the Indian missions in Nigeria and Ghana have confirmed to IANS. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that a total of 1,848 cases have been reported with 1013 deaths in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone between August 7 and 9.

So far, Guinea has recorded 506 cases with 373 deaths, Liberia 599 cases with 373 deaths, Nigeria 13 cases with two deaths and Sierra Leone 730 cases with 315 deaths.

“There have been a few calls from people who were anxious about the disease, whilst others have expressed the desire to leave Nigeria, but there has not been any urgent need to move out,” Sharad Srivastava, first secretary in the Indian High Commission in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, said. The mission in Abuja is also accredited to Benin, Cameroun and Chad.

“Nobody is packing out and we do not have any information from other countries - that we are accredited to showing that there is any panic among the Indian community,” T.J. Suresh, information counsellor of the Indian high commission in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, said.

Letter found in Osama’s hideout warns of IS brutality IANS, LONDON

letter found at slain Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan warned of the rise of a new Islamic extremist group capable of extreme brutality that could damage Al Qaeda’s reputation, media reported on August 12. The 21-page letter, written by one of Bin Laden’s senior officials in 2011, claimed the Islamic State (IS), formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), has complete disregard for civilian life, the Daily Mail reported.

According to the letter, the IS’s barbaric acts include the use of chlorine gas as chemical weapon, bombing mosques, crucifixions and beheadings.

The letter said that the IS was simply too extreme even for the group that killed thousands in the 9/11 attacks.

Today, the IS has become a powerful force that has control of areas in Iraq and Syria larger than Great Britain. Its trademark black jihadi flag has fluttered in the background of “promotional” videos of executions, including crucifixions and beheadings.

The ‘caliphate’ the Islamic state has claimed to have established, represents the biggest shift in the political geography of the Middle East since the borders of modern Iraq and Syria were drawn under the Sykes-Picot agreement between Britain and France in 1916.

The IS was founded by 43-yearold Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, a cleric held prisoner for four years by American troops in Iraq.

The leader, a Sunni Muslim who despises the Shia-run Iraqi government, now commands more than 10,000 fighters, many of whom are former Saddam Hussein-era soldiers or disenchanted Sunnis who lost power and influence after the fall of the dictator’s regime.

The group is estimated to have amassed a staggering £1.2 billion. It has even sold 8,000-year-old antiquities it has seized.

Sharif refuses to come under pressure ISLAMABAD: In a televised address to the nation on August 12, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif rejected demands for his resignation and reiterated that his government will complete five-year constitutional term.

Defense Minister Arun Jaitley told the Lok Sabha that the directors general of the Coast Guards of the two countries met in New Delhi June 25.

The major issues discussed included training and cooperation on maritime search and rescue, maritime pollution response, conduct of joint maritime exercises and speedy release of arrested fishermen. Sri Lanka frequently arrests Indian fishermen who stray into its waters.

In the process, Modi, 63, who took charge of India May 26, outlined his vision for the country, frankly admitting the faults within and calling on neighboring countries to team up with India to battle poverty.

He also announced a burial of the Planning Commission, saying it was not needed any more. He said a new institution will take its place.

“How long will this continue?” he asked, sounding emotive. “We have fought enough, we have killed enough. Turn back and see, has anyone gained anything?”

He said decades of bloodshed had caused deep wounds to “Bharat Mata”, adding there should be no violence for 10 years.

Before beginning the speech, Modi — in a departure from convention — took salute from the armed forces. He spoke mostly extempore, occasionally looking down for a peek at his notes.

Asking the world to “Come, Make in India!”, Modi urged global investors to make this country a manufacturing hub.

“I tell the world, Make in India!

Sell anywhere but manufacture here. We have the skill and talent.”

He said it should be every Indian’s dream to see “Made in India” products around the world -- green

friendly and with zero defects.

Reiterating his dream to make India a clean place, Modi asked: “Do we want to live in filth?”

He said India should become clean and hygienic by 2019 -- the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a staunch believer in cleanliness.

Modi made special reference to women’s safety and the girl child.

Despairing over India’s skewed sex ratio, he told Indians to end female foeticide. “I appeal to parents not to sacrifice the girl child.”

Modi added: “Our heads hang in shame when we hear news about rape.”

Dubbed by critics as a divisive personality, the prime minister

underlined the need to take everyone along.

“Let us walk together, think together, and make a determination to take ahead the nation together.”

Lending a personal touch, the prime minister hailed Indian democracy for allowing a person from “a poor family, an ordinary family” to assume the country’s top post.

“I stand before you today not as the prime minister but as the Pradhan Sevak (Chief Public Servant).”

The remark, made at the start of his speech, drew thunderous applause.

Modi also called himself “an outsider to Delhi. But an outsider came to Delhi and got an insider view (of the administration)”.

Modi has announced a financial inclusion mission to mark India’s 68th Independence Day and extend banking, credit, insurance and pension services to all households.

Named as “Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana” or Prime Minister’s People’s Wealth Mission, it will provide two bank accounts, at least, to every household and an insurance scheme for the poor, among other numerous benefits.

“We want to integrate the poorest of the poor people with bank accounts,” the prime minister announced during the course of his I-Day speech from the historic Red Fort here.

xpressing concern over rising food prices, President Pranab Mukherjee on August 14 said that the Indian economy nonetheless was showing signs of revival and higher growth was on the horizon.

“Signs of revival are visible,” the president said in his customary televised address to the nation a day prior to the country’s 68th Independence Day. “Our external sector has strengthened. Fiscal consolidation measures are beginning to show results. Notwithstanding occasional spurts, inflation has started moderating,” he said.

“The stage is now set for our economy to move on a high growth trajectory of 7-8 percent, which is essential to ensure the availability of adequate resources for equitable development.”

at an average 7.6 percent in the past decade, and the expansion was sub-

dued at 5 percent in the past two years, he still saw optimism.

He said India’s external sector had strengthened, fiscal measures were beginning to show results, inflation had started moderating, employment had increased and manufacturing was the rebound.

“However, food prices still remain a matter of serious concern.

Record food grains production last year helped agriculture sector to grow at a healthy 4.7 percent.”

Greeting the people ahead of IDay, the president also said India was still young at 68 and therefore had the will, energy, intellect, values and unity to claim the 21st century.

“The vision to win the battle of freedom from poverty is set. The journey will seem formidable only to those without conviction. As an old saying goes, ‘Sidhir Bhavati Karmaja’, which means, success is born of action.”

157 years later, tributes paid to 1857 martyrs IANS, AMRITSAR

xactly 157 years after they were pushed into a well by the British rulers, the remains of 282 martyrs from the first war of independence in 1857 which were dug up from a well in Punjab’s Ajnala town this year were paid their last respects on August 1.

The remains were dug up from the “Kalian wala khu” (well of the blacks), now referred to as the “shaheedan wala khu” (well of the martyrs), at Ajnala near Amritsar.

The victims, mostly Indian soldiers in the British Army who had rebelled, were mercilessly pushed

into the well and killed after being covered with soil by British troops.

An all-faith prayer service was held to pay tributes to the martyrs at Ajnala town. Scores of people attended the event. These included historians, eminent locals and members of the Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj. “Tributes were paid to the martyrs whose remains were recovered from the well,” said historian Surendra Kochhar, who was actively engaged with the digging process in February this year.

Following three days of digging, the volunteers recovered 90 skulls, 170 jaws, over 5,000 teeth and hundreds of bones.

Scores of volunteers, including men, women, children and even the elderly, were engaged in digging the well, located inside the premises of Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj at Ajnala. Other things recovered included coins of the British times, gold items and medals. The gurdwara had come up at the site as a tribute to the martyrs.

The martyrs were troops comprising Indians from the 26th Bengal Native Infantry posted at Mian Mir cantonment near Lahore who revolted against the British and were marching towards Ajnala after hearing reports of the mutiny in Meerut and other places in 1857.

The remains were dug up from the ‘Kalian wala khu’ (well of the blacks), now called ‘shaheedan wala khu’ well of the martyrs.

These soldiers, numbering about 500, had dared to challenge the British empire by killing two British officers near Lahore.

The then British deputy commissioner of Amritsar, Fredrick Cooper, ordered action against the troops.

While many were killed, 282 were captured and brought to

The gurdwara committee and others involved in the excavation said a suitable memorial and a museum would be built at the site to honor those who laid down their lives for the country.

s Delhi gears up to welcome a team from Unesco in September to evaluate the national capital’s bid for the World Heritage City tag, an NGO spearheading the move says this idea should have been proposed earlier and reveals how “frustrating” it can be to negotiate with different government bodies.

“Delhi should have been nominated for the World Heritage City tag a long time ago, but the problem is that these things require a lot of time and effort. And, unfortunately, most of the officials think of these things as a headache and not about national pride,” INTACH Delhi Chapter convener A.G.K. Menon told IANS. The Delhi chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is involved in several conservation projects in the national capital.

“We are not blaming different bodies because they have to fol-

Menon and his team of researchers compiled the voluminous dossier, which follows Unesco’s stringent submission guidelines, in three years.

It is substantiated with doublespread photographs and the necessary documentation and maps.

The two specific areas listed in it are: Shahjahanabad in old Delhi, which has Mughal-era her-

itage, and Lutyens’ Bungalow Zone (LBZ) in New Delhi.

The argument INTACH is making is that Delhi is an outstanding example of an imperial city encompassing two stages in the Indian subcontinent’s history: the peak of the Mughal Empire and apogee of British rule.

“We chose these sites because their respective rulers at that time chose to leave their earlier capitals and made these two sites their new capitals,” said Menon.

He further said that Delhi is also the city that has three World Heritage Sites — Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb and the Red Fort. To increase awareness about heritage and conservation, Menon feels children are the best target audience. “Children are the best target audience to generate awareness about heritage,” Menon contended. “Preservation is still not a priority for people.

This attitude can be changed by introducing them to this wonderful world early in their lives,” Menon concluded.

he widows of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh will send 1,000 hand-made, colorful rakhis and sweets to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who made his debut into the Lok Sabha from this holy city, an NGO said.

Hundreds of old widows who are spending the twilight years of their lives in ashrams here will send rakhis to their “new brother”, an official of Sulabh International said.

Among these, a dozen-odd widows, all in their 80s, in Birla and Durgakund ashrams are presently engaged in making the rakhis.

Also, a group of Nepalese elderly widows in Meera Sahabhagi and Chetan Vihar ashrams are busy in rakhi making. They started in the last week of July and have so far prepared around 500 such sacred bands that a sister ties on the brother’s wrist on the occasion of rakhi.

“We have planned a target of sending around 1,000 rakhis to our prime minister,” said a 80year-old widow of Birla ashram.

The widows will also tie rakhis to local saints and brahmins to mark the occasion, Sulabh spokesman Madan Jha told IANS. In places like Varanasi and Vrindavan, hundreds of widows lead an isolated life and often live in small rooms in narrow alleys. In the absence of family support, they spend most of their time praying and looking for food.

After the death of their husbands, widows at times face humiliation and insult from the family.

They are asked not to be present on auspicious functions in the family. They are also not supposed to wear colored clothes or ornaments.

“My idea is how to change thoughts, behavior and attitude of people of this country towards widows of India who are their mothers, sisters...,” said Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International.

Nearly 900 widows and some 200 children from various schools of Delhi and Mathura-Vrindavan will take part in rakhi celebration at Meera Sahabhagini ashram on August 9.

he central government has assured TRS MPs that the Home Ministry’s directive for special powers to Telangana governor for maintaining law and order will be kept in abeyance. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has agreed to convene a meeting with the MPs from the state on August 18 to resolve the issue.

“He has assured that till then, the orders will be kept in abeyance,” Vinod Kumar, one of the MPs of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) told reporters after a meeting with Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.

The MPs met the minister after raising issue in the Lok Sabha. They urged the central government to withdraw the directive, granting special powers over law and order in Hyderabad to the governor.

On Rajnath Singh’s clarification that the norms suggested by the ministry are in accordance with the

While the Supreme Court’s direction early this week to complete admissions in engineering colleges

I will never work with Sajid Khan again: BIPASHA The actor says she did not promote her latest release ‘Hamshakal’ as she was upset by the end result IANS, MUMBAI

ollywood actor Bipasha Basu, who decided to refrain from promoting Humshakals prior to its release, says she won’t work with Sajid Khan, the film’s director, ever again.

Bipasha, who was seen as one of the six key characters in the comic film which wasn’t received well, has nothing against the film’s co-producers Vashu Bhagnani and Fox Star Studios.

But she is glad she took a stand against promoting Humshakals when it was required.

She had said she was “extremely disturbed by the end result” of the film and “didn’t know how to promote the film with all honesty”.

Asked if she will work with Sajid again, Bipasha said here in an interaction: “No, I will never work with him.”

“I have nothing against Vashu-ji and Fox Star Studios. They have put in so much money and I respect that. I love Vashu-ji, it’s just that I didn’t want to come to a podium

and lie and look like a fool. I am the worst liar in the world. So I took a stand.”

Bipasha says such situations are rare.

“I have been in this industry for way too long. I have worked with many people and nobody has said

‘I have nothing against Vashu- ji and Fox Star Studios.

They have put in so much money and I respect that’ anything against me. It’s rare that you make such a mistake, it’s one of those films. I did this film on the basis of trust. Anyone who has seen the film will understand why I didn’t promote it.

“I was six minutes into it and I don’t know what I was doing in it,” The actor said of the movie, which also stars Saif Ali Khan, Ram Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Tamannaah Bhatia and Esha Gupta in the cast.

Bipasha Basu feels that the competition in filmdom is so cut throat that a feeling of insecurity creeps in. “This industry can make you insecure because it’s do or die for you all the time,” the actor told IANS. “If you are enjoying it, I know it’s rare, like me, you kind of sail through your 14 years peacefully. You never know that much time has passed.

This film tells you to love animals. It’s a simple straightforward premise structured around a comical plot about a gold-digger wastrel whose father leaves his billions to his dog.

Playing the predatory retriever with an evil glint in his eye and wicked smirk on his face, Akshay Kumar has a ball in the film. He does a wickedly amiable mean act trying to poison, electrocute and drown the canine. Admittedly, the characters on screen seem to enjoy themselves more than the audience.

Not that we don’t share their enjoyment.

For a large part of the narration, Entertainment is fun to watch. The script is deftly and devilishly put together.

If only writer-turned-co-director Sajid-Farhad did not trip over the cascade of word-play, the going would have been much

more pleasing.

Lamentably every character speaks in a tumble of puns and word play, some of them painfully plodding and self-conscious.

My most cringe-worthy ode to filmy word-play is, Aapna Sonakshi seena taan ke chal.

Really, now. Where there are the saints there are also the Sinhas.

The character played by the comically vibrant Krushna Abhishek crams in actors’ names

in every sentence. This would have been infuriatingly obtrusive in a film of a more serious nature.

No such calamity befalls Entertainment.

The biggest USP of the reasonably entertaining Entertainment is that it never makes the mistake of taking itself too seriously.

In the hilarious opening, where in a product-endorsement spoof with Riteish Deshmukh, Akshay establishes his character as a rogue and a charlatan, the film hops skips and jumps through hilarious hoopla, sometime generating a reluctant laughter in the audience, at other times leaving you a little numbed by the fatuous flavor of the farce.

Some scenes walk on thick ice, quite literally. The moral turningpoint for Akshay’s character vis-avis the canine happens in a scene spread out on a dangerously thin ice-bed. It defines what the film tries to achieve given its flimsy premise and nebulous moral ground. Tamannah has preciouslittle to do, and she does it not so well.

CHICAGO’S SENIORS HAVE A GALA TIME

HICAGO (IL) -- About 160 members of the Indian Seniors of Chicago met at Manav Seva Mandir, Benselville, IL on August 9 for the celebration of members’ birthdays, India’s Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtmi and an entertainment program.

The meeting, which was conducted

by Ashwin Dwivedi, started with prayers followed by Hanuman Chalisa after which Hira Patel presented the detailed accounts for July.

Speaking on Independence Day, Sharad Shah narrated how the big day was celebrated in India and he also discussed Article 370 of the Indian constitution, a law that grants special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Manu Shah said that Raksha Bandhan was an ancient Hindu festival that ritually celebrated the love and duty between brothers and their sisters, and explained its significance.

AAFA research grant for Dr Vikas Anathy

ERMONT -- The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has announced that Dr. Vikas Anathy is the 2014 recipient of its Sheldon Siegel Investigator Grant Award.

The annual research award provides $20,000 a year for two years to selected projects that are highly rated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) but which it is unable to fund. These ‘bridge grants’ have been awarded by the AAFA for more than 30 years to help promising researchers continue their important work.

Anathy is an assistant professor in the University of Vermont’s Department of Pathology. The Indian American educator earned a Ph.D. in biological sciences from the Madurai KamarajUniversity in India,

and completed his postdoctoral work at the University of Vermont.

His winning research proposal to AAFA, entitled “Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Stress Signaling in Allergen-Induced Airway Remodeling,” will help researchers better understand how allergens affect the lungs.

“Long-term repeated exposure to allergens can trigger a cycle of repair and remodeling in the lungs leading to stiffness of the lungs and respiratory failure,” says Anathy.

The AAFA is the only patient organization in the United States that funds basic science research for asthma and allergies, according to the organization.

MMThe foundation’s research program is dedicated to enhancing the overall understanding of asthma and allergic diseases, developing improved treatments, and searching for cures.

Pramila vanquishes rivals to win primary

OUTH SEATTLE, WA -Immigration activist Pramila Jayapal not only won convincingly in the primary for state Senate seat 37 in South Seattle, Washington, on August 5 but also received more votes than all of her five opponents combined.

The Indian American Democrat left four fellow Democrats and one Republican trailing in her wake, as she received 9,845 votes (52.59%), with Democrat and former teacher Louis Watanabe barely within shouting distance in second place with 3,120 votes (16.67%).

The lone Republican candidate received 11.03% of the ballots, while three other Democrats polled 9.9%, 7.83% and 1.99%, respectively.

If elected, says Jayapal, she would become the first South Asian elected to the Washington state Senate.

Watanabe has the unenviable task of facing off against the prohibitive favorite in the November election, as the two top finishers, regardless of party, advanced.

An attorney, Jayapal founded Hate Free Zone, which organized after the Septemebr 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to combat racially motivated bias and violence against Muslim and

Sikh Americans. She said many South Asians and Sikh Americans, including some young teenagers, volunteered for her campaign.

In 2008, Hate Free Zone changed its name to OneAmerica to reflect its advocacy on broader issues related to immigration and social justice. She stepped down as executive director of the group more than two years ago to focus on national issues.

Her work led her to being named among 14 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders as White House Champions of Change in May 2013.

Born in India and raised in India, Indonesia and Singapore, Jayapal is currently a fellow at the University of Washington School of Law and a former worker on Wall Street.

The 37th District seat, which includes Southeast Seattle and Renton, became open when the incumbent, Democrat Adam Kline, announced he would vacate the post to spend more time with his family.

St. Louis shoe store looted

T. LOUIS (MO) -- A south St. Louis shoe store was looted on the night of August 11.

The police said some 10 carloads of people smashed windows and looted the Shoe Carnival in the 3500 block of Bamberger at 11.54 pm.

According to police, numerous items were taken from the store. Following the incident, there was broken glass, socks and shoes scattered around the floor of the store.

The store was able to reopen, but south St. Louis residents are concerned that the crime will continue.

“You don’t destroy businesses. That’s not going to accomplish anything. It’s only going to put a bad stigma on the neighborhood,” said one resident. “Everybody in the neighborhood is not bad. But you do have people who want to take advantage of the situation.”

There is surveillance video from the store, but nobody has been arrested. A Radio Shack store two doors away was also targeted by looters, but they were not able to get inside.

Illinois health coverage warning

ore than 10,000 Illinois residents who bought insurance through President Barack Obama’s health care law could have their coverage canceled if they don’t send citizenship and immigration documents to confirm their eligibility by Septmber 5.

Federal officials say they are sending letters to approximately 10,300 Illinois consumers asking for their paperwork.

The letters caution that coverage will end by September 30 without the documentation. The letters were sent in English and in Spanish.

Illinois is on the top-10 list of states with unresolved cases.

People living in the country illegally are not allowed to get coverage. Officials say the letters tell consumers with unresolved citizenship and immigration issues that they can upload their documents to the HealthCare.gov website, or mail them in.

HICAGO (IL) -- A Chicago police officer is facing sexual abuse charges after he allegedly kissed and fondled a 9-year-old girl and then threatened her mother.

Dennis Barnes, 61, is charged with one count of attempted predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under 13, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, all felonies, according to a spokesman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.

He was ordered held on a $100,000 bond in court on August 14.

Barnes, a sergeant with the Chicago Police Depar tment, allegedly attempted to kiss and fondle the girl over the weekend.

Prosecutors said the girl was the daughter of one of Barnes’ friends.

After the girl told her mother what happened, Barnes allegedly threatened the woman, claiming he would harm himself and o thers.

A Chicago police spokeswoman said Barnes had been relieved of police powers and the case was under investigation.

Guv Quinn wants museum named after US Senator Alan Dixon

PRINGFIELD (IL) -- Governor Pat Quinn has announced a plan to name the Illinois State Museum Building in Springfield after the late US Senator Alan Dixon.

He initiated and is working with the Illinois General Assembly to pass a joint resolution making that designation official.

“Alan Dixon served with distinction on the local, state and federal levels and was an integral part of our state’s history for four decades,” Governor Quinn said. “Naming this building in his honor will help serve as a reminder of his lasting legacy of public service and his dedication to the people of Illinois.”

“This is a very fitting way to honor the career of Alan Dixon who served the residents of our state with honor and energy for decades.

I will be proud to sponsor this resolution,” Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan said.

“Alan Dixon’s legacy of bipartisanship, leadership and commitment to seeking the common good represents the best aspects of public service in our state and country,” Illinois Senate President John Cullerton said.

The Illinois State Museum at 502 S. Spring St. in Springfield will be named the Alan J. Dixon Building of the Illinois State Museum upon passage of the joint resolution.

He also served as Illinois Treasurer from 1971 to 1977 and Secretary of State from 1977 to 1981. Dixon served in the U.S. Senate from 1980 to 1993, and was chairman of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission in 1994 and 1995. Dixon died on July 6, 2014 and is survived by his wife, Joan “Jody” Fox Dixon, three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Businessman sues brother-in-law over IIFA profits

AMPA (FL) -- A Florida businessman of Indian origin is suing his brother-in-law, a noted Indian-American philanthropist, for robbing him of of his due profit share earned by hosting a Bollywood film award show.

The ongoing legal dispute involving the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), US edition, has entered a contentious new phase.

Plaintiff Chetan “Jason” Shah has accused his brother-in-law Kiran Patel, a philanthropist and healthcare entrepreneur, of fraudulently adding his name to IIFA host committee official documents and later cutting him out of his share of the profits, the report said.

Shah, a Tampa Bay real estate professional, is suing Patel, who is credited as a top funder and organizer of the IIFAs, a series of Bollywood events held in Tampa Bay, Florida, in April.

Shah maintains being the rightful founder of the American edition of the awards show, and claims that it was him who persuaded event organizers to bring IIFA’s first-ever show in America. He claims Patel and other IIFA principals conspired to cut him out of event organizing and profits.

The four-day IIFA Weekend reportedly brought significant economic benefits to the Tampa Bay region. The event drew an estimated 30,000 visitors who generated over $26 million in total spending, according to a June 1 press release from the Visit Tampa Bay tourism organization.

In a July 3 court filing, , Shah claimed Patel coerced him into signing a document late last year just as Shah was being rushed to the hospital for heart surgery.

That document allowed Patel to negotiate a new deal with IIFA organizers that cut Shah out of any profits, Shah told the paper.

HICAGO (IL) -- Illinois’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.8 per cent in July, the lowest rate since late 2008.

According to Illinois Department of Employment Security, July’s unemployment rate was a signicant drop from June when Illinois’ unemployment rate stood at 7.1 per cent, the ninth highest in the nation.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics records show that that month, the nationwide unemployment rate was 6.2 per cent.

“Illinois’ comeback is going strong and we’ve got more work to do,” Governor Pat Quinn said in a press release on August 14.

“During July, 11,200 new private sector jobs were added, including 3,900 manufacturing jobs,” says the release.

The state’s unemployment rate has fallen steadily since July 2013, when it stood at 9.2 per cent, and has completed its steepest 12-month decline of 2.4 percentage points since August 1984.

T

here could soon be an effective treatment for heart failure and its prevention.

Researchers have discovered a molecule that provides the heart with a tool to block a key protein that leads to heart failure.

Named ‘Myheart’, the newly discovered non-coding RNA helps the heart to block BRG1, a protein that orchestrates genetic disruptions when the heart is subjected to stress, such as high blood pressure, the findings showed.

“I think of Myheart (myosin

heavy-chain-associated RNA transcript) as a molecular crowbar that pries BRG1 off the genomic DNA and prevents it from manipulating genetic activity,” said Ching-Pin Chang, an associate professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine in the U.S. When the adult heart is subjected to significant stress such as high blood pressure or damage from a heart attack, the protein BRG1 begins altering the heart’s genetic activity, leading to heart failure.

In mice with stress-induced high levels of BRG1, the researcher were able to restore Myheart to normal levels using gene transfer

technology. Restoring Myheart levels blocked BRG1 actions and prevented heart failure, they said.

Although the results in mice would suggest testing Myheart against heart failure in humans, it is too large — by molecular standards — to be delivered as a drug, Chang said.

The researchers now are working to identify smaller portions of the Myheart molecule that are key to its ability to block BRG1. Such a subsection of the Myheart molecule could lead to a compound to test in human trials.

The study appeared online in the journal Nature.
