BCCI urged not to postpone AGM

NEW DELHI: Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the spot-fixing and betting case in the Indian Premier League (IPL), on September 2 requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not to postpone the Annual General Meeting (AGM) just to facilitate N. Srinivasan’s re-election for a third term as the president.

“Despite clear directive by the apex court, a disturbing trend is being noticed in the BCCI. A section of the officials, if the reports are to be believed, have chalked out a plan to postpone the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) indefinitely. It is a clear conspiracy to keep the BCCI elections hanging till Srinivasan gets any relief from the Supreme Court,” said Verma in a statement.

The BCCI AGM is slated for month end as Srinivasan’s term ends on September 29. But the BCCI may find it tough to host the AGM as scheduled after the Supreme Court on September 1 ignored pleas to reinstate Srinivasan as its president.

What has struck the BCCI hard is also the fact that the apex court gave two more months to the Mukul Mudgal Committee to submit the final report in the spot-fixing and betting scandal in the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

rime Minister Narendra Modi on August 29 said India’s strategic partnership with the U.S. is an important pillar of its foreign policy. “This partnership is not only relevant for the attainment of India’s national, regional and global aspirations, it is also an important contributor to peace, stability and prosperity in Asia and the world,” he said during an interaction with the Japanese media ahead of his visit to that country.

Modi said: “As I have said in the recent past to visiting American dignitaries, we should not look at the relationship merely in terms of what India and the U.S. can do for each other, but more importantly, what India and the U.S. can do together, for the world.”

“As the largest and oldest democracies in the world, there is also a convergence of values, which also means that it is natural for India and the U.S. to want to partner more closely with traditional friends who share such values, such as Japan,” he said.

Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. later this month.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address Indian and American industry through video conferencing during his visit to the United States. The interaction is being organized by the U.S.India Business Council (USIBC) and participants from various industry segments are likely to join the call.

While refusing to disclose the program’s details immediately, USIBC’s acting-president Diane Farrell said: “The USIBC is very pleased to be actively involved in planning for upcoming visits by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as Finance and Defense Minister Arun Jaitley.”

According to a source, the conference call will be attended by a large number of players from the pharmaceutical and Information technology (IT) sectors.

“The two key issues which are expected to set the stage for discussion are supply and quality of drugs, and intellectual property,” the source said.

Most Americans pessimistic about personal growth: Survey IANS, WASHINGTON

espite sustained job growth and better employment opportunities at lower levels post-Great Recession, most Americans still think the United States economy has undergone a permanent change for the worse.

Seven in 10 U.S. citizens say the recession’s impact is permanent, up from half in 2009 when the recession officially ended, according to a new national survey at Rutgers University’s John J Heldrich Center for Workforce Development in New Jersey.

According to the survey, just one in six Americans believes that job opportunities for the next generation will be better than for theirs; five years ago, four in 10 held that view. Roughly four in five Americans have little or no confidence

that the federal government will make progress on the nation’s most important problems over the next year, it added.

“One-quarter of the public says there has been a major decline in their quality of life owing to the recession and 42 percent say they have less in salary and savings than when the recession began,” informed professor Carl Van Horn, director of Heldrich center.

Only one in three thinks the U.S. economy has become better in last year while one-quarter thinks it will improve next year.

Just one in six believes that job opportunities will be better for the next generation of American workers — down from four in 10 five years ago. The Heldrich center conducted its survey between July 24 and August 3 this year with a nationally representative sample of 1,153 Americans.

US identifies citizens fighting for IS WASHINGTON: United States intelligence and law enforcement agencies have identified around a dozen of its citizens, who have traveled to the Middle East to join jihad led by the Islamic State, officials said.

As the group has grown stronger in recent months, more foreigners have gone to Syria to fight in its ranks, which has forced European and U.S. authorities to dedicate more resources to keep them from leaving their countries of origin, the sources said. IS has become more attractive than Al Qaeda for potential fighters because it rules the territory with strict Islamic law.

“IS is able to hold itself up as the

true jihad,” a senior U.S. official said.

s he completed 100 days in office on September 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity is still running high as he unleashes a new style of governance and is surprising everyone with his grasp of foreign policy expertise few thought he had it in him. Barring his most bitter critics, the widespread view seems to be that Modi, who turns 64 on September 17, is proving to be a prime minister the country has lacked in recent decades — strong, decisive and pro-active. His Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) certainly thinks so.

“Modi has taken bold decisions and has provided the direction on which government policies will unfold in the months and years to come,” said BJP spokesman G.V.L. Narasimha Rao, who interacts closely with the veteran politician.

“There is a sea change in the last three months in the way the government functions,” Rao told IANS, comparing it with a decade of Congress rule. “Modi has empowered the bureaucracy and given a clear direction to the political leadership.”

month after assuming office, Narendra Modi had rued the absence in his case of the customary honeymoon period for a new prime minister.

Now, the by-election setbacks and signs of dissonance at the top have cast a further shadow on his first 100 days as prime minister.

The sombre mood was not quite what he might have expected at the start of his tenure. The prime minister and his party were then on a roll, having achieved what they could not have imagined in their wildest dreams before the general election — an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha.

Modi’s stature was at its zenith then, as was exemplified by his sitting on a throne-like chair on a platform to address the ministers and party men sitting some distance away at a lower level.

That his word was law was also evident from the fact that his

approval was necessary even for the selection of staff by any of the ministers.

He also reduced to silence those of his colleagues who spoke out of turn, as a minister in the Prime Minister’s Office did on article 370 concerning Kashmir or General V.K. Singh did on the new army chief.

Now, Modi’s exalted position has received a glancing blow from the BJP’s failure to perform up to expectations in the by-elections.

And the evidence of a rift between Home Minister Rajnath Singh and another as yet unnamed senior minister has dented the government’s image.

To what extent these intimations of political mortality will cramp the PM’s style is not

known. In all likelihood, it will make him all the more aware of the need to push ahead with greater vigor on both the administrative and political fronts.

There is little doubt that the perception that he is not living up to his reputation as a doer is partly responsible for the marginal slide in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral position.

As of now, there is little to show for his presence at the helm. The generally upbeat mood in the share markets is based more on the expectations of ‘achhe din’ or good days than on reality.

There are visible signs of progress, even in the matter of cleanliness or “swachh Bharat”, including a cleansed Ganga, the young appear to lose interest.

The sombre mood was not quite what Prime Minister Narendra Modi might have expected at the start of his tenure.

With expectations for good days being high, the PM•Modi has to deliver.

Gaza destruction ‘unprecedented’: UN UNITED NATIONS: The recent conflict in the Gaza Strip has caused “unprecedented” destruction, leaving hundreds of thousands people homeless, the UN said on September 2, quoting the latest assessment after the ceasefire.

“Organizations on the ground report that the scale of destruction is ‘unprecedented’. An estimated 18,000 housing units have been either destroyed or severely damaged, leaving more than 108,000 people homeless,” Xinhua quoted UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric as saying.

“Finding temporary housing solutions for these people will be one of the major challenges facing local authorities and the humanitarian community,” Dujarric said. Electricity is still out for 18 hours a

day in most areas across Gaza and only 10 percent of the population receives water daily, Dujarric added.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs(OCHA), the ceasefire in Gaza since August 27 has now allowed for “a more in-depth assessment” of the structural damage, which found around 13 percent of housing stock in the Gaza Strip has been affected by the conflict. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said over 55,000 displaced people are still sheltering in 36 schools run by the agency. On July 23, the UN rights agency decided to send a probe committee to the Gaza Strip to probe possible violations of human rights.

fficials from Nepal and India will be meeting in New Delhi on September 4 to hold talks on the muchtouted Power Trade Agreement (PTA) between the energy-starved nations.

According to the decision taken during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal in August, the two sides agreed to complete the negotiations within 45 days.

Nepal’s cabinet on September 2 formed a seven-member task force comprising senior officials from the ministries of energy, finance, foreign affairs and law and justice to negotiate with the Indian side, Nepal’s Minister for Information and Communication, Minendra Rijal, told the media after a meeting.

Energy Secretary Rajendra Kishor Chettri would be leading the Nepali delegation to India to finalize the PTA, Rijal said.

The team will hold negotiations with the Indian side in order to sign the PTA and an attorney has been entrusted to him to include the Indian position in the PTA before signing it, the minister said.

The PTA is the key for both the sides to export and import electrici-

ty, fixing the price and exploring the market as energy-starved Nepal and India need to do business in the long term facilitating power generation and production. India and Nepal have been trying to enter into a power trade deal since long so that.

The Indian side had sent a draft of a Power Cooperation Agreement (PCA) to Nepal on May 9. KABUL: At least 35 Taliban militants have been killed in fresh military operations across Afghanistan, the interior ministry said on September 3.

The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) carried out operations in Nangarhar, Balkh, Kandahar, Wardak, Paktiya, Helmand and Kapisa provinces, Xinhua reported citing the statement.

At least 18 militants were wounded and two others arrested by the ANSF, the statement said.

The security forces also recovered and defused four roadside bombs planted by the militants.

The statement, however, did not disclose if there were any casualties on the side of security forces.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister of Australia David Johnston says Australia remains committed to a contribution beyond 2014.

Take up fishermen’s issue at highest level: Jaya CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on September 2 urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up with Sri Lanka’s highest authorities the issue of arrest of Indian fishermen.

In a letter to Modi, the text of which was released to the media here, she said: “The alarmingly increasing frequency of apprehension of our fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy is a matter of utmost concern for my government. An immediate intervention at the highest level is sought to resolve this long-standing issue.”

“I urge you to take this up with the highest authorities of the Sri Lankan government and ensure the immediate release of the 15 fishermen now apprehended and all the 63 boats in their cus-

tody,” Jayalalithaa said in her letter.

She said the Sri Lankan Navy arrested 15 fishermen on September 1 and 2 while they were fishing in the traditional waters.

Referring to the non-release of apprehended fishing boats belonging to Indian fishermen, Jayalalithaa said the “inhumane” and “cruel strategy” was causing great loss to the livelihood of the fishermen and their families.

housands were stranded at bus and railway stations across Kerala on September 2 as a BJP-RSS sponsored shutdown to protest the murder of a RSS leader derailed life in the state. Minor incidents of sporadic attacks on motorists who defied the strike call were reported in parts of Kerala.

Across Kerala, shops, businesses and markets were deserted. The government declared a holiday for all educational institutions. Attendance in government offices was said to be thin. Barring two-wheelers and some private vehicles, the streets were mostly deserted. Buses of the state-owned transport department

and private buses did not venture out fearing attacks by protesters.

In some places, a few buses that came on to the roads were stoned by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) activists. The crew quickly called off the service.

The dawn-to-dusk shutdown was called to protest the killing on September 1 of RSS leader K.T. Manoj in Kannur district.

Unknown assailants first hurled bombs at his vehicle and then attacked him with swords, police said. Kannur has for years seen clashes between BJP-RSS activists and supporters of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) but the violence had waned in recent times. Those who reached Kerala by

trains and buses found themselves stranded as public vehicles refused to ply. “We have come from Tamil Nadu and we have to go to a hospital around 50 km away,” complained a male member of a family that reached Eranakulam railway station from Tamil Nadu.

Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh leader K.T. Manoj was on September 1 attacked by unknown assailants with bombs as he was going in a vehicle in Kathiroor in Kannur district and then run through with swords, according to the local police.

Soon after the murder took place, the RSS had called for a shutdown in Kannur district, but by evening, decided to extend it throughout the state.

In a move to ease congestion, he said an east-west four-lane corridor (skyway) would be developed between Vanasthalipuram and Ramachandrapuram. “Similarly a corridor will be developed between north and south,” he said while opposing the proposal mooted by officials for construction of 25 flyovers.

police case was registered here on August 31 against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma for his objectionable tweets on Lord Ganesh. On a complaint by lawyer Karuna Sagar, a case was filed against Varma at the Saroornagar police station in Cyberabad.

“We have registered a case against Varma. We will seek legal opinion before proceeding further in the case,” Saroornagar police inspector B. Naveen Reddy told IANS. The filmmaker was booked under four sections of the Indian Penal Code — sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), and 298 (hurting religious feelings). The complainant alleged that Varma hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus by insulting Lord Ganesh through his series of tweets. Several police complaints were also filed against Varma in Mumbai for his objec-

u apna kiss karta rahe, Paresh Rawal sarcastically scoffs at the ‘serial kisser’ Emraan Hashmi after he catches him necking Pakistani actress Humaima in a lift in Cape Town.

These inhouse jokes, I tell you! They are the life and death of a certain kind of cinema where the script has to be far clever than the audience. In Raja Natwarlal, a con caper with a lot going for it at least on paper, Emraan has little to do that could catapult him to the next level of his career. He swings along in the low tide of this film’s too-clever-for-its-owngood plot, happy to play the “lovable” (giggle!) con-man who chances on a scam much bigger than he had bargained for.

The film is essentially a cat-and-mouse chase between Emraan’s Natwarlal accompanied by a wry rogue named Yogi

(Paresh rawal, giving a terrific shape to his ill-defined role) and a business tycoon in Cape Town named Vardha (Kay Kay Menon) whose passion for cricket makes him a sitting duck for a cricket scam masterminded by the aforementioned con

persons who, like the script, is not half as clever as he’s like to believe.

Hence, entire banks and automobiles are sham-constructed within hours to dupe the kingpin villain.

Like a woman during her time of the month, the script here has its good and bad moments.

While the basic premise of getting the better of a powerful adversary works, some of the individual components in the plot such as the pre-climactic set-up where Kay Kay Menon’s character is properly had, makes us wonder how a man who has accumulated billions can be so dumb.

Love does it to a lot of smart people.

Here it is cricket. Director Kunal Deshmukh had earlier described the complex affinity between cricket and avarice in Jannat.

To its credit, it must be said that Raja Natwarlal is a far more tightly-wound and original idea that flounders only when the characters try to act smarter than the script allows them to.

‘Never imagined I’d be successful in cinema’ Pranitha has starred in over a dozen southern films since making her debut in 2010 IANS, CHENNAI

outhern actor Pranitha Subhash, who comes from a family of doctors, always aspired to choose an academic-oriented career.

But neither she nor her parents thought she would become a successful actress.

Pranitha, who made her acting debut in 2010 Kannada film Porki, has starred in over a dozen southern films since then.

“I’m happy with the way my career is progressing. But I didn’t even imagine that being a Kannadiga, from a highly academic-oriented family, I would ever get into films. Even if I had not become a doctor like my parents, I would’ve done something to do with academics,” Pranitha told IANS. “This (cinema) is something completely different from what my parents would’ve imagined for me. Four years ago, nobody would’ve even anticipated I would be here. But you see, life is all about experimenting and going with the flow,” she said.

“I play a role people would expect out of me in Rabhasa, which has all the commercial elements to appeal to the masses,” she added.

Jr NTR plays the lead in Rabhasa, and Pranitha said “it was a sight to see him dance on sets”.

“He’s a brilliant dancer and a wonderful coactor as well,” she added. After Telugu hits Attarintiki Daaredhi and Pandavulu Pandavulu Tummeda, this is the third time Pranitha is appearing as a second lead.

The actor doesn’t mind it because “it’s the trend of multiple heroines in Telugu filmdom. Moreover, my roles have always been justified and well appreciated”.

Ex-Attorney loses appeal against death sentence

A R R I S B U RG ( PA ) - - A n unemployed immigration attorney on August 5 lost an appeal of his conviction and death sentence for shooting to death five people during a 2000 attack that targeted ethnic minorities, who included Anil Thakur, then 31, at an Indian grocery store, in western Pennsylvania.

The high court’s 60-page opinion ruled against the appeal of Richard Baumhammers, currently on death row for the two-hour rampage. He also shot a sixth man, Sandip Patel, the manager of the Indian grocery store and then 25, who was left paralyzed and has since died.

Baumhammers began by shooting to death a Jewish neighbor and setting her house on fire, then attacked others at a Chinese restaurant and the Indian grocery store. He painted racist graffiti and fired into two synagogues.

Nothing in his argument, Justice Thomas Saylor for the unanimous court, “convinces us that he is entitled to relief.”

The appeal addressed statements by a forensic psychiatrist after the trial, asserted mistakes by his defense lawyer at trial and sentencing, raised procedural claims and said Baumhammers was forcibly medicated at trial in violation of his rights.

GURDWARAS’ DRIVE TO EDUCATE AMERICANS

HADY GROVE (MD) -Representatives of gurdwaras from across the United States have given the go-ahead for a new grassroots campaign to educate Americans about the Sikh religion and culture and change perception of the Sikhs in the country.

A meeting held at the University of Maryland Shady Grove Campus here, on August 16, pledged support for the unprecedented campaign, under the banner of the National Sikh Campaign (NSC), which was launched in March. The meeting, which was attended by more than 100 representatives of gurdwaras from across the country, decided to raise $5 million toward the campaign.

Besides Maryland, the neighboring Virginia and Pennsylvania, the states represented include California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey,

New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. Dozens of Sikh community leaders from other states joined the meeting over the phone.

Two veteran media gurus who are helping with the campaign, Geoff Garin and Isaac Baker, made presentations outlining how the Sikh image can be reshaped. Garin, who works with Hart Research, is a former political strategist to Hillary Clinton. Baker’s firm AKPD Message and Media worked for President Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns.

“The consensus was that there is a critical need for this kind of media strategy for the Sikh community,” Dr. Rajwant Singh, president of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education, who facilitated the discussion, said.

“Secondly, all possible efforts need to be made to include as many Gurdwaras as possible in the network as partners. Thirdly, our goal is to keep the focus on introducing Sikhism and

the Sikh identity while showing the positive contribution of the community in the media.”

Singh, who is also a senior advisor to NSC, added: “Almost every person said that this type of campaign should have been launched long time ago and would have prevented many hardships that many members of the community have had to face since 9/11.”

One of the Sikh leaders who participated in the meeting was Dr. Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, president of the Oak Creek Gurdwara in Wisconsin, where a white supremacist gunned down six devotees before taking his own life.

“The aim of the campaign is to counteract the negative image and perceptions Americans have about Sikhs and Sikhism and create a positive image of Sikhs and our faith,” he said.

“This is about taking a proactive approach, or as in medicine we would say, a preventative approach— ‘Prevention is better than a cure’ approach. Hopefully that will prevent future

tragedies for our people.”

Many Sikh leaders who attended the meeting said such a campaign is long overdue. “It’s long overdue that Sikh organizations and gurdwaras work together to take a proactive approach to the challenges Sikhs face in America, Jasvir Kaur Singh, who represented the Sikh Religious Society in Chicago, said.

“This was the first time I’ve attended a Sikh event where we hoped to check our egos at the door and have a candid conversation about the lack of progress we’ve made despite our attempts and personal, professional successes.”

Explaining the fund-raising strategy for the campaign, Jivan Singh Achreja, its national strategy director, said “a large section of the community will be tapped through gurdwaras and online sources in a creative fund-raising strategy that will involve all levels of the community.”

IMMIGRATION REFORMS MAY BE DELAYED

ASHINGTON, DC -Legal immigrants’ hopes and aspirations for securing work permits and Green Cards sooner may be dashed as President Barack Obama has indicated that he is rethinking on his earlier proposed move of bringing in immigration reforms next month which would have led to more number of H-1B visas for skilled workers, work permits for H-4 visa holders and Green Cards for workers who have been waiting for years on end.

The delay is under pressure from nervous Democratic Senate candidates in tight races in the upcoming November polls, which may swing out of their control over the issue of executive action on immigration reforms by Obama. He may now delay some or all of his most controversial proposals until after the midterm elections in November, according to people familiar with White House deliberations.

According to Josh Earnest, White House press secretary, the President was “as determined as ever to take that kind of action on his own.” But he and

other White House officials declined to repeat the Obama’s earlier pledge of an announcement by the end of this summer, or to say whether the President was considering delaying some of his decisions until later this year.

Inside the White House, the timing of

an announcement on immigration reforms has become the subject of a fierce debate.

Some of Obama’s advisers are urging him to postpone it, fearful of the political ramifications of a sweeping action to protect millions of illegal immigrants from deportation and provide many of them official work papers. Some also say such a move by the President could set off a pitched fight with Republicans and dash hopes for Democrats running in conservative states.

But others inside the White House are pushing Obama to stick to his promised schedule, regardless of the immediate political consequences. They argue that Republicans will criticize the president and attack Democratic candidates even if he delays parts of his announcement until after the election.

While the delay by Obama has been because of the surge in illegal immigration, there is a sliver of hope that Obama might go ahead and announce reforms for legal immigrants, on which subject his staff has held some 20 meetings with business and industry groups and advocates, who urge increasing the number of work visas and giving more Green Cards.

AHANOY CITY (PA) -- A Paterson man was arrested on September 2 for wearing what investigators believe was a stolen Passaic County Sheriff ’s uniform in Pennsylvania.

Alexis Colon, 26, identified himself a sheriff ’s officer, gave false names to the police and was carrying a BB-gun that looked like a real handgun, the Mahanoy City Police Department said.

Colon allegedly followed a Mahanoy City police car last week, beeping his horn and flashing his lights to get the officer to pull over.

“Colon got out of his vehicle and identified himself as a sheriff from New Jersey,” says Patrolman TJ Rentchler, the arresting officer.“He said he was robbed, and he wanted to make a report to law enforcement.”

The Stamford police have arrested 29-year-old Shota Mekoshvili, who lives in Stamford on a visa from the Republic of Georgia.

The police say phone records and other intelligence helped them find their suspect. They say a foot chase ensued before Mekoshvili was Tasered and arrested the night of August 28.

The police believe Mekoshvili’s motive was robbery as he had been arrested for burglary in the past.

Razia Sultana, wife of the taxi driver, said she was glad that the police arrested the culprit, adding that her husband was a generous man.

The award will be presented to him during the association’s annual convention at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, 1401 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, New Jersey on September 21.

As the chairman of the NJPhA PAC, Shah has been trying to push a legislation in favor of small pharmacies and advocacy towards the pharmacists and their profession.

Also, as the chairperson of patient education committee at the Indian Health camp of New Jersey, he has done several seminars to provide patient education and counseling on various diseases as well as medication management clinical pharmacy expertise in various areas of patient management, including medication management, chronic disease management, etc to help patients to reduce complications from chronic diseases and improve their lifestyles.

In 2003, he went into his own business and opened up Bayshore Home Care Pharmacy followed by Ramtown Pharmacy in 2005. Due to his passion, dedication and hard work to serve patients, Mr. Shah opened up two more pharmacy stores in Raritan and Keansburg in 2010.

The event bore a festive look with Indian and American flags flying high and people donning the traditional white cap--a symbol of the fight against the mighty British Empire which eventually led to the birth of a new nation.

The event comprised, besides the flag-hoisting, a cultural program, a dance performance by members of the Moksha and Arya Dance Academy, patriotic songs

by Umesh Patel and Nidhi Kumar of Bombay Beats Group.

Pakistani American tampers with records in health fraud case

ETROIT (MI) -- A Pakistani American businessman from the Detroit area has been indicted for obstruction of justice in connection with his alleged attempts to conceal evidence relevant to his upcoming trial for an alleged health care fraud scheme with estimated losses exceeding $30 million.

Zafar Mehmood, 48, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, is currently awaiting trial for his alleged role in a health care fraud scheme involving, among other allegations, the submission of fraudulent claims to Medicare for services that were medically unnecessary or never provided, according to a press release issued by the Justice Department.

Mehmood allegedly used at least four home health agencies in the Detroit area, including Access Care Home Care Inc., Patient Care Home Care Inc., Hands On Healing Home Care Inc. and All State Home Care Inc., to perpetrate his fraud.

On July 25, and again on July 28, Mehmood attempted to alter and conceal records and documents, which included several patient files, with the intent to impair their integrity and availability for use in his upcoming trial.

When he was arrested in November, 2011, law enforcement agents executed search warrants at five locations, seizure warrants for 31 bank accounts related to the scheme and suspended Medicare payments to 16 health care companies associated with the scheme.

Mehmood is alleged to have paid kickbacks to patient recruiters and billed Medicare for services that were not medically necessary and/or not performed through Access, Patient Care, Hands On Healing and All State. He is also accused of laundering the proceeds of the scheme through sham companies and intermediaries.

jinkya Rahane’s maiden century and his centuryrun stand with Shikhar Dhawan powered India to a comprehensive nine-wicket win over England in the fourth ODI here on September 2 and also sealed the series 3-0 with still a match to go.

With this win India won an OneDay International in a bilateral series in England after twenty four years. Last time the team won a series there in 1990 when India won the Texaco Trophy beating England

BCCI urged not to postpone AGM NEW DELHI: Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the spot-fixing and betting case in the Indian Premier League (IPL), on September 2 requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not to postpone the Annual General Meeting (AGM) just to facilitate N. Srinivasan’s re-election for a third term as the president.

“Despite clear directive by the apex court, a disturbing trend is being noticed in the BCCI. A section of the officials, if the reports are to be believed, have chalked out a plan to postpone the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) indefinitely. It is a clear conspiracy to keep the BCCI elections hanging till Srinivasan gets any relief from the Supreme Court,” said Verma in a statement.

The BCCI AGM is slated for month end as Srinivasan’s term ends on September 29. But the BCCI may find it tough to host the AGM as scheduled after the Supreme Court on September 1 ignored pleas to reinstate Srinivasan as its president.

ontrary to the traditional view that men are more invested in technology, a new study found that more young women are addicted to cell phones and even get agitated when it is not in sight.

Nearly 60 percent of college students are hooked to cell phones, the study found.

“Women college students spend an average of 10 hours a day on their cellphones and men college students spend nearly eight, with excessive use posing potential risks for academic performance,” informed James Roberts from Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business.

Respondents overall reported spending the most time texting (94.6 minutes a day), followed by sending emails (48.5 minutes), checking Facebook (38.6 minutes), surfing the Internet (34.4 minutes) and listening to their iPods (26.9 minutes).

Rosang may have been one of the first private restaurants catering to northeastern food to have opened up in the capital over 10 years ago, but since then multiple eateries have sprung up, Says Ashish Chopra, the author of NE Belly, one of the first cookbooks on northeastern cuisine, the past few years have seen a dramatic change. “I have met people who have wrongly assumed that the food is unhealthy or smelly. Lots of effort is being made to change that mindset and bring this cuisine to the mainstream.”
