ctor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan has finally unveiled this week the first look poster of his long-delayed bilingual film Vishwaroopam 2. Haasan tweeted the posters in three languages. Having been lying in cold storage for nearly two years, the sequel to Kamal Haasan-directed Vishwaroopam will release later this year.

Last month, Haasan confirmed that the project has been revived. Also starring Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Rahul Bose and Shekhar Kapur, the film will explore the mother-son sentiment between Haasan and Waheeda Rehman, who has played a pivotal role. The film, which has music by Ghibran, was simultaneously shot in Tamil and Hindi. It has also been dubbed in Telugu. Haasan plays a spy in the film,

‘Baahubali 2’: Drama supersedes action in the film

I

f there’s one department in which the second instalment in the Baahubali franchise truly excels over the first, it has to be in writing, especially how Rajamouli uses drama as a core narrative while providing necessary adrenaline rush via action at regular intervals. It can be said without an iota of doubt that nobody handles emotions and drama like Rajamouli does in commercial cinema format and he ups the ante, making this ‘Conclusion’ truly epic and cinematically extravagant. Hillary blames FBI chief, Russia for 2016 defeat

‘US working on new N.Korea sanctions’

‘If the election had been on October 27, I would be your President’, she told CNN IANS, WASHINGTON

H

illary Clinton has said she takes responsibility for her loss to Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential race, but blamed Russian interference and the timing of a letter from FBI Director James Comey as factors depriving her of an otherwise expected victory. “If the election had been on October 27, I would be your President,” she told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour at a Women for Women International event in New York. “I take absolute personal responsibility. I was the candidate, I was the person who was on the ballot. I am very aware of the challenges, the problems, the shortfalls that we had,” Clinton said. She added that she was “on the way to winning until a combination of Jim Comey’s letter on October 28 and Russian WikiLeaks raised doubts in the minds of people who were inclined to vote for me and got scared off.” Clinton was referring to the decision by Comey to disclose — 11 days before election day — that the FBI was reviewing newly-discovered emails in relation to the

investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server while at the helm of the Department of State. Just days later, Comey concluded the emails were mostly personal or duplicates of what the government had already examined prior to clearing Clinton of any criminal charges. Responding on Clinton’s comments, Trump in a series of late night tweets, both revisited his 2016 victory and seemingly slammed the judgement of his own FBI director. “FBI Director Comey was the

best thing that ever happened to Hillary Clinton in that he gave her a free pass for many bad deeds! The phoney Trump/Russia story was an excuse used by the Democrats as justification for losing the election. Perhaps Trump just ran a great campaign,” Trump wrote in a series of messages. Comey will appear before a Senate committee, where he’ll face questions on Russian interference in the US election and why he decided to announce that the FBI was looking again at Clinton’s

emails just days before the election. Hours before Trump tweeted, Clinton welcomed the President’s ire after Amanpour predicted that the Twitter-focused President would respond to his former opponent. “Fine. Better than the interfering in foreign affairs,” Clinton said of the prospect Trump would tweet about her. She came back to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s role in the 2016 election and how he was able to tilt the scale in favor of Trump and against her. Clinton also hung part of her 2016 loss on misogyny. “Yes, I do think it played a role. I think other things did as well,” she said. The former Secretary of State also pledged to “publicly request” that the Trump administration “not end our efforts making women’s rights and opportunities” central to US policy. And on North Korea, Clinton cautioned Trump against giving too much away by saying he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un under the right circumstances. “I don’t believe that we alone are able to really put the pressure on this North Korean regime that needs to be placed,” she said.

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the US was preparing new sanctions against North Korea if Pyongyang takes steps that warrant new sanctions. The US is “preparing additional sanctions” if it turns out that the North Korea’s future actions merit additional sanctions, Tillerson said here in a speech to State Department employees. Tillerson also said that the US was ready to engage in talks with North Korea “when conditions are right”, adding that Washington was sending a “very, very clear and resolute” message that the country’s security and economic prosperity “can only be secured” through commitment to denuclearization, Xinhua news agency reported. Tillerson also reaffirmed that the US was not seeking regime change in North Korea. Tension has remained very high over the past two months between the US and North Korea over the former’s threat to stage military attack upon Pyongyang for its nuclear and missile programs. —IANS

‘59% Americans uneasy about White House welcomes Infosys move to Trump’s approach on Syria’ hire 10,000 Americans in next two years WASHINGTON: Nearly six in 10 Americans feel uneasy about US President Donald Trump’s approach towards handling the situation in Syria, according to a new CBS News poll. As many as 59 per cent of respondents are uneasy about Trump’s handling of the Syrian crisis, while four in 10 respondents feel confident about Trump’s ability, Xinhua news agency reported. Despite the low level of confidence in Trump’s ability to handle the situation in Syria, more than half of Americans say that the US campaign against the extremist group Islamic State goes at least somewhat well, with 9 per cent saying that the US campaign goes very well, showed the poll released earlier this week. Meanwhile, the poll also found that more respondents are sceptical of Trump’s ability as Commander-inChief of the US military. Only 46 per cent respondents express at least somewhat confi-

T dence in Trump’s ability, while 17 per cent say not too confident and another 35 per cent express no confidence at all in Trump’s ability. The Trump administration’s botched travel ban also appeared to take its toll on Trump’s polling number, with 46 per cent respondents saying that Trump is making the US image in the world weaker, compared to 36 per cent of respondents who say the US image in the world has become stronger since Trump took office.

he White House has welcomed the announcement by global software major Infosys to hire 10,000 American workers in the next two years, calling it a “political victory”. “We’re glad to see companies like Infosys see opportunity in the American economy again,” said Ninio Fetalvo, a White House spokesman, in a statement to the Washington Post. Infosys announced that it would hire 10,000 American workers in the next two years and would set up four technology and innovation hubs across North America to focus on cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, user experience, emerging digital technologies, cloud and big data. The first hub will open in the midwestern state of Indiana in

August and is expected to create 2,000 jobs by 2021 for American workers. “The hubs will have technology and innovation focused areas and serve clients in key industries such as financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, retail and energy,” said the firm in a statement. The White House characterized the Infosys announcement as a political victory, pointing to it as

further evidence that companies are renewing investment in the US as a result of the Trump administration’s “pro-growth economic agenda”. Clients in the US contribute about 60 per cent of the company’s software export revenue per year. The company will hire experienced professionals, recent graduates from major universities and local and community colleges to create talent pools for the future.

India blames Pakistan Army for mutilation of soldiers

Blood samples of the slain personnel and a blood trail clearly show that Pakistani soldiers returned beyond the LoC after committing the crime

Army chief hints at action after mutilation of soldiers NEW DELHI: Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Thursday indicated Indian forces will retaliate following the mutilation of the bodies of two soldiers by Pakistan but declined to specify details. “You are asking for a future plan. The Army never gives out future plan. It is said only after it is executed,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an Army function here. Hours after New Delhi summoned Pakistan’s envoy and gave him “actionable evidence” on the basis of blood samples and trail leading to Pakistan, Defense Minister Arun Jaitley used strong words at a media briefing to say that Pakistani troops were complicit in the Monday brutality. “I think the denial itself carries no credibility because the entire gambit

Kumar Vishwas remains in AAP, his MLA critic suspended NEW DELHI: Delhi’s ruling AAP averted a major crisis on Wednesday when its disgruntled founder leader Kumar Vishwas agreed not to quit while an MLA who took him on was suspended from the party. After indicating a day earlier that he may quit the Aam Aadmi Party, Kumar Vishwas (Center in picture) on Wednesday attended a meeting of the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. “The PAC has decided to suspend Amanatullah Khan from the party,” Deputy Chief Minister and Kumar Vishwas’ childhood friend Manish Sisodia told reporters. The decision came three days after Khan alleged that Kumar Vish-

BRIEFS Operation to check Kashmir robberies

NEW DELHI: A massive combing operation was launched in south Kashmir on Thursday following a spree of bank robberies and killing of policemen, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said here. “It is a regular operation. Every day we do it. There is nothing new. There has been bank loots and policemen have been killed. It is just to make sure that the situation is brought under control,” Gen Rawat told reporters on the sidelines of an army function. The Army Chief was asked about the crackdown by security forces in at least 20 villages of south Kashmir’s Shopian district searching for militants involved in recent terror attacks and bank robberies. He said the Army was taking steps to check cross-border infiltration of militants from Pakistan.

our Army.” His statement came after New Delhi said it had “actionable evidence” of the Pakistan Army’s involvement in the killings on the Krishna Ghati sector on the Line

of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. External Affairs Ministry spokesman Gopal Baglay said the blood samples of the slain personnel and a blood trail clearly showed that Pakistani soldiers returned beyond the LoC after committing the crime. The “actionable evidence” was given to Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit by Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar, who summoned him to the Foreign Office and conveyed India’s outrage. Jaishankar demanded that Pakistan takes appropriate action against the soldiers and commanders responsible for it.

NEW DELHI: In a major decision aimed at tackling the mounting non-performing assets (NPAs) of public sector banks, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday night issued an ordinance to amend the Banking Regulation Act that will empower the RBI to go after defaulters. The Cabinet is believed to have approved a policy on bad debts (NPAs), which is being forwarded to President Pranab Mukherjee for approval. The President is likely to clear the ordinance on Wednesday night itself. “It is an amendment in the Banking Regulation Act. Since Parliament is not in session, it will be issued as an ordinance, which needs President’s approval,” official sources told IANS.

After extensive talks with Erdogan, in which the fight against terrorism formed a major part, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said both the countries have agreed that “no intent or goal, no reason or rationale can validate terrorism”. A rise in the number of cases with farm income higher than Rs 10 million came to light after the demonetization drive. Modi’s fight against black money would be incomplete if agricultural sector is not brought under the tax net

Tax farm income to fight black money

AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI

T

axing agricultural income has always been a politically sensitive topic. This was evident last week after NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy spoke in favor of this above a certain threshold. Immediate clarifications followed that the official stance was not the same. Throughout the history of independent India, similar suggestions have met the same fate. Most famously, B.R. Ambedkar, who was critical of the land revenue system of the British, supported a progressive tax on agricultural income. A Taxation Enquiry Commission set up in 1953-54 suggested a revision of tax laws that would take into consideration the changes in

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's war on black money is likely to remain incomplete without taxing farm income. An exemption in the sector allows non-agricultural entities to evade taxes by declaring agriculture as income source.

the price of agricultural output. In 1975, a Committee on Agriculture Taxation headed by K.N. Raj recommended taxing the agricultural income of the rich. In 1985, the long-term fiscal policy introduced by the government touted the idea of taxing agricultural income. In short, the topic of agricultural taxa-

tion is neither new nor without merit and should not be dismissed as such. The first argument in favor of such a taxation is that an exemption in the sector allows non-agricultural entities to evade taxes by declaring agriculture as their source of income. This undermines any

effort to curb the circulation of black money in the economy. Postdemonetization, a Parliamentary panel raised concerns that there was a rise in the number of cases with farm income higher than Rs 10 million. The Modi government’s fight against black money will be ren-

dered incomplete if the agricultural sector is not brought within its ambit. Secondly, it hardly makes sense to keep big farmers and agricultural companies out of purview of the tax department. Companies like Kaveri Seeds and multinational Monsanto India claimed exemption of Rs 186 crore and Rs 94 crore as agricultural income in the year 2014-15. Surely, such companies and farmers owning land above a certain threshold can be brought under the tax net. Third, the scale of tax exemption in the sector is such that the government will have to consider levying income tax on them. Bibek Debroy pointed out that two-thirds of India’s 225 million households are in rural India and are effectively not taxed. Moreover, India has 110120 million cultivators and a tax payer base of 64.4 million. It is unfair to impose the burden of taxation on such a small proportion of the country’s population. Fourth, a uniform taxation of agricultural income across the country will eliminate the competitive disadvantage farmers of some states face due to taxes imposed by their state governments.

Why UDAN may not make air travel affordable for poor Although India saw a massive decline in poverty over the last 20 years, 21.9% of its population still lives below poverty line SHREYA SHAH, NEW DELHI

T

he average Indian is unlikely to be able to afford a Rs 2,500 flight — 13.8 times the monthly spending on travel (Rs 180) in 2011-2012 — under the governments new “Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik” (UDAN) program. Launched on April 27, UDAN will feature flights to underserved smaller towns in which a certain number of seats will be subsidized — Rs 2,500 for an hour-long flight, and fares going up pro-rata for longer distances. For instance, a subsidized Shimla-Delhi ticket for

June 1 is currently priced at Rs 2,036, and will be operated by Alliance Air, an Air India subsidiary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi promoted this as an opportunity for more people, especially the “common man”, to access air travel. “Why should air services be only for the elite in this country? I told my officials that I want people wearing hawai chappals [inexpensive flipflops] to be taking flights,” he said at the launch. But even at these low prices, a considerable part of the population is unlikely to use air services as claimed by the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flags-off first Shimla-Delhi flight under UDAN scheme at Jubbarhatti airport in Shimla.

Although India has seen a massive decline in poverty over the last two decades, 21.9 per cent of its population still lives below the poverty line of Rs 816 per person per month in rural areas, and Rs 1,000 per capita per month in urban areas, according to government data. The cost of a one-hour flight is nearly as much as the average

monthly per capita expenditure of Rs 2,629.65 in urban areas — where most airports are likely to be located — according to 20112012 data from the government’s National Sample Survey Office. The fare for non-subsidized tickets on the same flights could go as high as Rs 19,000. Through the UDAN program,

the government will subsidize a minimum of nine and a maximum of 40 seats on a flight. The underserved or unserved routes will be auctioned out, and the lowest bidder will win a monopoly over the sector for three years. In return, they would have to operate at least three flights a week on the route, and a maximum of seven.

Harjit Sajjan urged to resign over Afghan offensive claim Indian-origin Defense Minister, Harjit Sajjan, in a speech in New Delhi, had claimed he was the architect of Operation Medus against Taliban IANS, OTTAWA

C

anada’s opposition has launched an all-out attack on Indian-origin Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan calling upon him to resign or be fired for exaggerating his military record in Afghanistan, though Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was standing by his minister. In speech in New Delhi last month, Sajjan told the Indian think tank Observer Research Foundation that he had been the “architect” of Operation Medusa against Taliban — a statement which the minister has since retracted. Operation Medusa was Canada’s largest military operation since the 1950s, one of the bloodi-

Ismail Ali Khan was also convicted and sentenced for falsely stating that he was not a criminal on his application to become a naturalized US citizen, federal prosecutors said. Prosecutors said Khan, a resident of Decatur in Georgia, and others illegaly imported pills from China containing an active ingredient in Viagra and distributed them throughout the US, Patch news portal reported. He was part of a criminal export ring that hatched an elaborate scheme to import to the US, male enhancement pills with names such as “Maxman,” “Happy Passengers” from China. The ring’s plot included mislabelling scores of drugs to evade detection by the Food and Drug Administration and US Customs and Border Protection. The drugs were labelled as beauty products, pottery, coffee, and tea, federal prosecutors said. Khan’s sentence would be followed by three years of supervised release, according to the report. —IANS

2006 offensive. Twelve Canadians were also killed in the fighting. Sajjan was a Major with the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan

during Operation Medusa, and received a special commendation. “On my first deployment to Kandahar in 2006, I was kind of thrown in an unforeseen situation and became the architect of an operation... where we removed about 1,500 Taliban fighters,” Sajjan had said in a speech. Trudeau and Sajjan endured a withering question-period offensive on Monday as opposition MPs accused the Defense Minister of “stolen valour” for overstating his role in planning Operation Medusa in Afghanistan, the Toronto Star reported. Opposition parties trained their sights squarely on Sajjan, who apologized again in the House of Commons. He had also apologized on the social media two days earlier for the claim.

Indian-origin man robbed while rescuing co-worker WASHINGTON: An Indian-origin man was robbed while saving a female co-worker from an oncoming train in the US. He was later rewarded by the police. Anil Vannavalli, 34, was waiting for a train at the Edison platform in New Jersey morning when his coworker Madhuri Recherla fainted and fell on the tracks, NJ.com reported. According to police, Vannavalli dropped his backpack and jumped on the tracks with two other commuters to carry Recherla to safety. While he was busy saving the woman’s life, someone snatched the backpack. The backpack contained Vannavalli’s work laptop, three pairs of headphones valued at $700, about $200 in cash, his work identification card and train tickets, said police officials. “This theft, perpetrated in the midst of such a selfless good deed, seems so very disgusting and outrageous,” said Police chief Thomas Bryan. —IANS

‘Combat hate crimes against minorities’ IANS, WASHINGTON

I

ndian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has urged Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to use his complete authority in combating hate crimes against religious minorities in the US. Krishnamoorthi made the appeal in a letter signed by 68 others. The Congressman’s letter comes after Kelly in a Congres-

sional Asian Pacific American Caucus meeting said that there was a need for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to focus more on white supremacist organizations and hate groups, the American Bazaar Online reported. “I was heartened to hear Secretary Kelly’s recognition of the threat posed by hate groups and other forces of intolerance,” Krishnamoorthi said.

“This letter urges the Secretary to act on that knowledge and use the resources of his department to combat both hate crimes and their root causes.” Krishnamoorthi wrote in the let-

ter that many Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jews, and other religious minorities in the US are living under the fear for their safety and requested him to protect their interests.

Goa beef traders demand

B

eef traders in Goa this week demanded police protection, alleging they were being attacked while transporting beef or beef waste by self-styled local “gau rakshaks” (cow vigilantes). Addressing a press conference here, Manna Bepari, President of the Qureshi Meat Traders Association of Goa, said that the association had also appealed to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, requesting him to put such vigilante groups under surveillance. “We have FDA (Food and Drugs Administration), health and municipality licences, unlike in Uttar Pradesh. Despite this, they are trying to replicate what is happening in that state. We will never allow this to happen. We want Goa government...Chief Minister to protect us,” Bepari told reporters. Last week, traders transporting a consignment of beef waste to a government-endorsed disposal centre located at the only legal abattoir here — Goa Meat Complex — were stopped allegedly by gau rakshaks after stoning the vehi-

tection. Those who are illegally attacking us should be kept under surveillance and we should be given police protection,” Bepari said, adding that names of the gau rakshak organizations had been submitted to the authorities.

Beef is normally consumed in the form of stew, curries, roasts, soups and is an essential protein, and one of the cheapest meats in most Christian and Muslim homes in the state. Minorities comprise nearly 30 per cent of the

state’s 1.5 million population. Cheaper than mutton, beef is also commonly consumed in the tourism-oriented coastal belt, which sees nearly three million tourists, out of which half a million are foreigners. According to official statistics from the Goa Meat Complex, the state’s only abattoir facility allowed to slaughter cattle and buffaloes, the state consumes more than 40 tonnes of beef every day. Last month, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy and a senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad functionary had demanded a ban on consumption of beef in the state, which is currently ruled by a BJP-led coalition. Bepari said that nearly “5,0006,000” people were involved in Goa’s meat industry and that there were around 70-80 beef traders in the state. The only legal slaughtering facility, the Goa Meat Complex, Bepari said, only slaughters cattle which are certified fit for slaughter by a government veterinarian and under CCTV surveillance. “Beef sold in our stores is legally obtained,” Qureshi added.

The Essar Group later said it categorically denied all allegations of any misconduct by its executives and said it stood by them. Those arrested include B.B. Rajendra Prasad, an Indian Revenue Service officer of 1992 batch and currently Income Tax Commissioner (Appeals-30) in Mumbai; Pradip Mittal, Managing Director of Essar Group of Companies; and Vipin Bajpai, an accounts officer in the company headquartered in Mumbai. andeep Singh struck a hat-trick as India staged a strong comeback to beat Japan 4-3 in a league match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament. Mandeep Singh struck in the 45th, 51st and 58th minutes after defender Rupinder Pal Singh (sixth minute) had powered home a penalty corner to hand an early lead to India. Japan fought back through Kazuma Murata (10th minute), Heita Yoshihara (43rd minute) and Genki Mitani (45th minute). Mandeep thus became the third player to score a hat-trick in the tournament after the Australian pair of Trent Mitton and Tom Craig. India now have seven points from four matches. They had started their campaign with a 2-2 draw with title contenders Britain in the opening match of the tournament. They had then defeated New Zealand 3-1 before going down by a similar margin to favorites Australia. India will now take on hosts Malaysia in their last match of the league stage.

India will now take on hosts Malaysia in their last match of the league stage.

It was a fast paced match which saw an aggressive India enjoy the bigger share of ball possession while Japan relied on speedy counter-attacks. To their credit, the spirited Japanese took the lead twice but the Indians did well to

SULTAN AZLAN SHAH CUP stage comebacks on both occasions. Despite being the higher rated team, the Indians struggled to contain their opponents and their defense was repeatedly caught on the wrong foot by the fast counter-attacks by the Japanese. Indian coach Roelant Oltmans will

also be worried by the poor penalty corner conversion rate. The Indians got five penalty corners and barring the first one, the rest were wasted. There was plenty of action in the first 15 minutes with India putting Japan on the backfoot by constantly attacking them and making space in the penalty circle. It was Rupinder who showed innovative dribbling skills to penetrate the circle and take a shot at the goal in the initial minutes of the first quarter but he was slightly off target with the shot going wide. But he made up almost immediately when Talwinder Singh —

who was playing his 50th international match — won India their first penalty corner. Rupinder improvised on the injunction by Sardar Singh to fire the ball into the top left of the goal giving Japan goalkeeper Suguro Shimmoto little chance to react. But Japan were quick to hit back when Masaki Ohashi set up their first goal with a square pass to Murata who deflected the ball past Indian custodian Akash Chikte. India had an opportunity to regain the lead when they won a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the first quarter. But Harmanpreet Singh’s flick rebounded off a Japan defender.

The question that had haunted the nation for two years — why Kattappa killed Baahubali — is

well justified and it’s no cheap ploy, as imagined by a section of the audience, to keep the hype alive.

In the second part, the “Eega” filmmaker explores the psyche of his lead characters — making us

truly understand who they really are — in the most thrilling fashion. If you hated Bhallaladeva (Rana) in the first part, he will make you cringe in the second, and his final face-off with Baahubali (Prabhas) is bang for the buck. As visually exhilarating as Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is for most part, leaving us in a state of amazement, the visual effects still could have been more refined, particularly in the action scenes. It only reminds one of the hurriedness with which the climax was handled and the war sequence, unfortunately, is not as entertaining. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

The findings, published in the journal Internal Medicine Review, showed that avocado consumers were 33 per cent less likely to be overweight or obese and 32 per cent less likely to have an elevated waist circumference compared to non-consumers. On average, avocado consumers weighed 7.5 lbs less, had a mean BIM of 1 unit less and 1.2 inches smaller waist circumference compared to non-

Further, avocado consumption may also lead to an overall better diet, as consumers had higher intakes of dietary fibro, total fat, good fats (monumentalized fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids), vitamins E and C, folate, magnesium, copper and potassium. Avocado consumers also had lower intakes of total carbohydrates. “These findings indicate incorporating avocados could be one way to meet the recommended fruit and vegetable intake and potentially improve physiologic measures,” said Nikki Ford, Hasse Avocado Board Director of Nutrition in California, US.

n addition to benefitting your heart and muscles, a regular walk also contributes to keeping your brain healthy, new research suggests. The foot’s impact during walking sends pressure waves through the arteries that significantly modify and can increase the supply of blood to the brain, according to the study presented at the American Physiological Society (APS) annual meeting at Experimental Biology 2017 in Chicago. In the study, the researchers from New Mexico Highlands Uni-

versity used non-invasive ultrasound to measure hemispheric cerebral blood flow or CBF to both sides of the brain of 12 healthy young adults during standing upright, rest and steady walking

(one metre/second). The researchers found that though there is lighter foot impact associated with walking compared with running, walking still produces large pressure waves in the body that significantly increase blood flow to the brain. While the effects of walking on CBF were less dramatic than those caused by running. “New data now strongly suggest that brain blood flow is very dynamic and depends directly on cyclic aortic pressures that interact with retrograde pressure pulses from foot impacts,” the researchers wrote.

Of the sample group, 7.3 per cent of girls had an extreme wish to have plastic surgery, compared with two per cent of boys, the research published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, found. “Being victimized by peers resulted in poor psychological functioning, which increased desire for cosmetic surgery. For bullies, cosmetic surgery may simply be another tactic to increase social status...to look good and achieve dominance,” Wolke and his co-authors said. The rates of cosmetic surgery were also increasing in Britain, the research said.

Facebook likes may not cheer you up LONDON: Getting those thumbs up or heart icons — ‘likes’ — on your social media posts may not help you feel better or improve mood if you are feeling low, researchers say. ‘Mantostaan’: Strong portrayal but lacks emotional punch

D

irector Rahat Kazmi’s Mantostaan flogs the 1947 Indo-Pak partition tragedy to the hilt, with legendary writer Sadat Hasan Manto’s four short stories; Khol Do, Thanda Gosht, Assignment and Aakhiri Salute. These tales set in Amritsar, Lahore and Kashmir, though not connected, run parallel, giving you a disposition of the rugged times. Each story is subtly layered with human ironies that mock blatantly. While the stories unveil the hypocrisy and hypocrites of the society during the trying period, the film does nothing much, other than portray the factual in a stark manner, which is dark, violent and brutal. Khol Do is the story of Saina and her father - Sirajuddin, who are separated in the frenzy only because Sirajuddin insisted on retrieving his daughter’s dupatta so that she can cover her body according to traditions. a Muslim ex-Judge and his Sikh friend. How after the death of the Sikh, his son continues the tradition of sending sweets to the Muslim family even during tough moments, forms the crux of this tale. Aakhri Salute is the story of two childhood friends Ram Singh and Nawab. Both are soldiers serving their respective armies, one Indian and the other Pakistani. USCIS alert against scammers

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) issued a fraud alert on April 19 to warn the public about a scam using the DHS OIG hotline telephone number. Scammers have identified themselves as ‘US Immigration’ employees and have altered their caller ID to seem like the call is coming from the DHS OIG hotline (1-800-323-8603). They then demand that the individual provide or verify personally identifiable information, often by telling individuals that they are victims of identity theft. According to the police, “if you receive a call demanding personal information or payment, hang up immediately.” The public has been advised to verify the call by calling National Customer Service Center at 800-375-5283. “Make an InfoPass appointment at http:// infopass.uscis.gov, or use USCIS to find upto-date information about your application. USCIS officials will never threaten you or ask for payment over the phone or in an email. “If we need payment, we will mail a letter on official stationery requesting payment. Do not give payment over the phone to anyone who claims to be a USCIS official. In general, we encourage you to protect your personal information and not to provide details about your immigration application in any public area.”

LIVE, LOVE, CELEBRATE

Laurels for a local Naperville based small business Manvee Vaid’s tea ware brand Terra Klay, based in Chicago area, that brings rare Manipuri pottery to the U.S. wins the prestigious FedEx Grant Chicago with its multicultural and diverse communities along with an artistic history serves as just the right place for unique enterprises like Terra Klay to flourish.

By Zofeen Maqsood

W

hen Naperville resident, Manvee Vaid, traveled into the interiors of Manipur in India, last year, she was moved by the extraordinarily difficult lives people led in remote Indian villages. Ms. Vaid, who was visiting a family of artisans, that make black stone pottery for her brand Terra Klay in U.S. felt almost obligated to do more for the benefit of poor womenfolk who had amazing artistic skills. Back home in Chicago, where she had been promoting her unique she was even more inspired to give the deserving a bigger platform. Ms Vaid decided this year to participate in the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest. The annual contest gives small businesses across the U.S. a chance to win a grant to help their business grow. Ms Vaid’s instincts to give it a try, resulted in a stellar surprize as her brand ended up being chosen amongst the ten winners of the prestigious contest. Every year, FedEx awards a grand prize of $25,000 grant + $7,500 in FedEx office services (won this year by Sword & Plough of Denver, Colo.) and a second prize of $15,000 grant + $5,000 in FedEx services (won by Flexfrost Protein Icecream of Glenridge, NJ) along with eight other prizes to businesses that receive $7,500 in grants and $1,000 in FedEx office services. Ms Vaid’s Terra Klay was chosen amongst the eight this year.

For Ms Vaid, a local small business owner, the recognition comes as an affirmation of her efforts. Her business of selling beautiful tea ware, through her brand Terra Klay, is not only about bringing to the world the rare and indigenous crafts from India but is also an attempt to preserve this dying tradition from India. All the pieces available under her brand are hand made by Manipuri artisans who have been involved in this form of pottery making for generations. However, devoid of any aid or suitable platform from the Indian government they are often unable to showcase their talents. Ms Vaid, who came to America 15 years ago after she got married, admits that she was lucky to have made Chicago her new home. The vibrant and receptive to art and culture attitude of Chicagoans gave her enough confidence to follow her creative pursuits. During her early years in Chicago, with a background in fine arts, she dabbled as a freelance artist. As she was always interested in rare art, slowly she began collecting lesser-known art from across India. The more she got involved with the artisans, the more need she felt, to save some of these precious traditions from getting extinct. Talking about her journey to launch Terra Klay, she says, “I remember I was in Australia for about a year in between and there I explored the Aboriginal art. On a visit to India, I saw striking similarities between Aboriginal art from Australia

and Gond art from Madhya Pradesh. I was intrigued to discover more such art connections. Over the years I began collecting rare arts from India and had everything from Madhubani art from Bihar to Warli art from Maharashtra to Bhil art from Madhya Pradesh.” She adds, “It was around this time that I got an opportunity to exhibit my collection at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. This was followed by many such exhibitions and eventually my selection at Santa Fe Folk Art Market where we exhibited thrice. To collect art I always worked directly with artists and my interactions made me realize that many extremely talented craftsmen are unable to get their due as the system had failed to give them recognition. Often they also spoke no English thus closing the channels of communication for them to

get into mainstream art world in India. There were also so many rich traditions that were dying a slow death as there were no takers or promoters.” For Ms Vaid, this apathy set a trigger and back in 2014 when an artisan group approached her she was particularly intrigued by this rare black pottery practiced in small regions of Manipur. However, Vaid shares, “I was not keen on doing a production line I was a little unsure of how to set up the business in America. But in 2015 we took our first leap and put our money to get a shipment from India. My first client was Adagio Teas in my neighborhood of Naperville. The manager at Adagio mentioned that despite the fact that they got a lot of teas from India, all their ceramics came from China and never India. I decided to concentrate on tea pots and tea cups made by women in this Manipuri craft and Terra Klay was born.” Today, Ms Vaid has a group of Manipuri girls and a few men working for her line. The girls mostly from an extended family in a remote village find sustenance through their craft. Ms Vaid takes great pride in telling that people in America are appreciating Indian aesthete looking at her pieces. The reward only bolsters her vision that the beauty of a craft can be admired everywhere, all it needs is a gentle push. Vaid hopes to use the grant money to multiply her efforts because for her the journey to tell the untold Indian stories to the world has just begun! Manvee Vaid thinks that the community in Chicago supported her wholeheartedly. For the selection process for the contest, which requires votes from people, she made several cold calls to various organizations and youth groups. People in the Chicago area were not only keen to understand her brand but also appreciative of her philosophy.

The complaint alleges that the FGM procedure was performed on girls who were six to eight years old. The defendants are alleged to have conspired with Nagarwala, who was ordered detained on April 17, pending trial. Nagarwala, Fakhruddin and Farida are believed to be the first people charged under 18 USC 116, which criminalizes FGM.

Junaid Mirza

BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY-- A Brooklyn travel agent accused of peddling phony pilgrimage packages to Muslims was sentenced to prison on April 18 as part of a plea deal. Junaid Mirza copped to third-degree grand-larceny charges in exchange for two to six years behind bars, law-enforcement sources said. Mirza allegedly scammed clients out of more than $350,000 by selling them fake travel packages. The 49-year-old primarily targeted Pakistani immigrants and Muslims, duping at least 25 hopeful travelers through a series of agencies he established between July 2011 and September 2015. Mirza purportedly sought out Muslims going on pilgrimage, selling them costly, allinclusive packages for Haj and other religious excursions.

COMMUNITY NEWS/east coast researcher Muslim man sues American Airlines Indian goes missing 4

FRIDAY, 05 MAY, 2017

BY A STAFF WRITER EW BRUNSWICK, NJ -- A Muslim flight attendant from New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against American Airlines alleging his co-workers repeatedly called him a terrorist and FBI agents came to his house after he complained about the harassment to company officials. Farkhan Mahmood Shah, an Edison resident of Pakistani descent, claims he was targeted for religious and ethnic harassment after the attacks of September 11. American Airlines failed to stop the harassment after he reported it, Shah claims in the suit filed recently in Superior Court in Middlesex County. Shah, who started working at the airline in 1999 as a flight attendant, says in the suit that he was called a terrorist, part of Hezbollah or Taliban, and other offensive names. On one flight, he claims that another flight attendant tried to convert him from Islam to Christianity. Shah said he reported the alleged harassment in 2008 when he began to notice erroneous marks on his record for reporting late and missing work. The complaint escalated to the airline’s New York human resources office in 2013 following numerous complaints where he

N

Sayak Banerjee

also brought up the record errors. He said he was told his record would be fixed, but it was never corrected. The next year, the harassment “escalated quickly,” the suit says. Shah claims in his suit that he was placed on a ‘watch list’ by American Airlines, and FBI agents showed up at his Edison home. He claims the harassment continued over the next two years, as his case was moved around to a number of different human resources representatives without any resolution.

In 2016, he filed a complaint with US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Less than two weeks later, FBI agents showed up at his house again, asking him if he planned on hurting anyone. ShahA received his Right to Sue letter from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission earlier this year and remains on airline’s staff, according to the suit. The suit, which names American Airlines and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, seeks damages, attorney fees and other relief.

Indian man on death row loses appeal BY A STAFF WRITER ONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA -- An Indian man convicted of killing a baby girl and her grandmother in Pennsylvania, has lost his appeal against the death sentence. Raghunandan Yandamuri of Upper Merion in Montgomery County, PA, was convicted in 2015 of killing 10-month-old Saanvi Venna and her grandmother Satyavathi Venna, 61. The Pennsylvnia High Court on April 26 affirmed the death sentence saying it was based on evidence presented during the trial. Yandamuri claimed he panicked when the grandmother opened the apartment door to him as he was carrying his knife. She was found by her son in a pool of blood stabbed to death. As for the baby, Yandamuri said he accidentally dropped her, then covered her mouth with a handkerchief to silence her, and tied a towel around her head. He dumped the

Blood centrifuge that costs less BY A STAFF WRITER group of Stanford University bioengineers, including Indian Americans Manu Prakash and Aanchal Johri, have developed an inexpensive, human-powered blood centrifuge. The centrifuge, which is built from 20 cents of paper, twine and plastic—Paperfuge-will enable precise diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as malaria, African sleeping sickness and tuberculosis in the poor regions where the diseases are most prominent. According to a Stanford news release, the centrifuge also separates blood into its individual components in only 90 seconds, spinning at 125,000 rpm while exerting centrifugal forces of 30,000 Gs. The physics and test results of this device are published in a recent issue of Nature Biomedical Engineering. Prakash, who specializes in low-cost diagnostic tools for underserved regions,

Sayak Banerjee, 33, an Indian American resident of San Carlos, Calif., was last seen by neighbors the week of April 17. He last spoke to his wife via cell phone on April 20, according to a report from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office. Banerjee was reported missing on April 24, when he failed to arrive at the Orlando Airport, where he was supposed to meet his wife, Kheya Chakraborty. Banerjee is known to be a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford, studying jet fuels and rocket fuels. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford in 2014. Khandu Patel

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON — A 56-year-old Indian American man was killed after getting caught in the crossfire of a motel shooting in Tennessee. Khandu Patel worked as a housekeeper at America’s Best Value Inn in Whitehaven, Tenn. He was staying there temporarily with his wife and two children. Patel was standing at the back of the motel on the second floor when a bullet hit him on April 24 at 7.30 pm. “He finished his day’s work and was out walking around the property,” said Jay Patel, the victim’s nephew “Next thing you know he hears some gunshots flying around and one caught him in the chest.” Patel was pronounced dead before he was taken to a hospital. Jay Patel said his uncle was preparing to move out of Whitehaven to nearby Southaven, Miss., for another job after a week. According to the police, there were witnesses that know who killed Patel, but they were not cooperating. The Memphis police said multiple suspects sped off in a new silver Nissan Altima or Maxima after firing at someone who was staying at the hotel.
