rime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted President Barack Obama’s invitation to visit the United States in September and said he looked forward to a “result-oriented visit” with concrete outcomes that impart new momentum to the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Obama’s formal invitation was conveyed by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns who met Modi on July 11and delivered a letter from the US president.

In the letter, Obama reiterated his invitation to Modi to visit Washington in September and to work closely with him to make India-U.S. relations a “defining partnership” for the 21st century.

According to a statement from

the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi thanked Obama for the invitation and said he “looked forward to a result-oriented visit with concrete outcomes that imparts new momentum and energy to IndiaU.S. strategic partnership”.

Burns conveyed Obama’s desire to boost economic ties with India, including in next-generation technologies and manufacturing sector, cooperate in enhancing energy security and deepen security cooperation, including in maritime security, counter-terrorism and intelligence exchange.

The U.S. president also desired to expand consultation and coordination on Afghanistan and work more broadly for security and prosperity in Asia.

Modi, who has been invited by President Barack Obama to visit Washington, is expected to meet him at the White House on September 30 after addressing the UN General Assembly session in New York.

An invitation to address a Joint Session of Congress is viewed as the highest honour the Congress can bestow on a foreign head of state, said Sherman.

India tops global poor list: UN NEW DELHI: India tops the list of countries with the largest share of global extreme poor though the poverty rate in southeast Asia as whole saw a substantial fall from 1990 to 2010, a new United Nations report said.

The poverty rate in southeast Asia fell from 45 percent in 1990 to 14 percent in 2010. Although poverty remains widespread in south Asia, progress in the region has been substantial, the Millenium Development Goals Report 2014 said.

However, India had the largest share of global poor at 32.9 percent, more than countries like China, Nigeria and Bangladesh, said the report which was released here on July 16.

India also had the highest child mortality rate worldwide in 2012 with 1.4 million children dying before reaching their fifth birthday, it said.

In 2012, south Asia accounted for 2.1 million of the 6.6 million deaths in children under five worldwide. India had the highest child mortality rate worldwide, the report said.

The eight MDGs, with a number of sub-targets covering a range of poverty, hunger, health, gender equality, education and environmental indicators, were agreed by all countries as an outgrowth of the UN Millennium Summit in 2000, most with a due date of 2015.

hen L.K. Advani was dragged kicking and screaming from the post of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president in 2005 under orders from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a diplomatic cable from the US embassy in Delhi to Washington stated that the event “demonstrated the power of the RSS — and will likely increase the party’s (the BJP’s) political decline”.

According to Wikileaks, the cable also noted that Advani was “shocked” by the failure of the “second tier” of the BJP leadership comprising, among others Murli Manohar Joshi and Sushma Swaraj, to come to his aid. While leaving the president’s post, Advani called for changing the “impression that has gained ground that no political or organizational decision can be taken (by the BJP) without the consent of the RSS functionaries”. Nearly a decade later, Narendra Modi can be said to have changed the impression by making the party choose its own man, Amit Shah, for the president’s post without the concurrence of the RSS. After choosing Rajnath Singh to replace Advani, they asked Nitin Gadkari to take Rajnath Singh’s

Modi, who met Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit at Fortaleza on July 15, expressed appreciation for Russia’s friendship and unstinting bilateral and international support for India’s economic development and security since the early days of India’s Independence, a press statement said.

Modi reaffirmed that relations with Russia will continue to enjoy the priority that they always had in India’s foreign policy.

In his first meeting with Xi since becoming prime minister, Modi called for enhanced Chinese investment in India’s infrastructure as the two leaders engaged in a freewheeling discussion and focused on building personal rapport in the discussion that went beyond the scheduled time.

China invited Modi to the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in November, the first time India has been invited for the meet.

The chief minister welcomed the decision of the group and said his government would provide adequate land for the plant. A delegation of top officials of ITC led by its executive director Pradeep Dhobale met the chief minister.

Microsoft India chairman Bhaskar Pramanik met Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao here and discussed the expansion plans. Pramanik briefed Rao of the activities of Microsoft in India and also discussed the tax policy being followed in the country. A statement from the chief minister’s office said Pramanik announced that Microsoft will further expand its operations in Telangana.

Students condemn Israel’s attack on Palestinians HYDERABAD: A massive protest was held here on July 13 to condemn Israel’s offensive against Palestinians.

Hundreds of activists of the Students Islamic Organization (SIO) took out a rally and formed a human chain, demanding an immediate halt to Israel’s attacks. The protestors raised slogans of “Down with Israel”. They were also carrying placards with pictures of children and other victims of Israeli bombardment.

“Let Gaza live”, “You don’t need to be a Muslim to stand up with Gaza”, “Murdering an 11-month-old is not selfdefense” were some of the slogans written on the placards. The speakers urged the Indian government to cut

down diplomatic ties with Israel and restore its traditional stand of backing Palestinians. The SIO leaders also urged the central government to press Israel to immediately stop the air strikes. “At a time when Prime Minister

CSIR scientists accused of data fabrication BANGALORE: It is rarely that work of Indian scientists grab worldwide attention. But last week, a group of scientists from a research institute in Chandigarh entered the international spotlight —

although for wrong reasons.

Between January and May 2013, the group from the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) had published three research papers in PLOS ONE, a reputed science journal having its headquarters in San Francisco.

In what has come as an embarrassment to the Indian science community, the journal announced on July 9 that it was retracting all the three papers of the IMTECH group “as the published results were fabricated”.

Swaranjit Singh, senior principal scientist at IMTECH and key author of all the discredited papers, did not reply to email request for his comments on the wholesale retraction of his group’s all three papers — a record of some sort.

IMTECH is a flagship institute under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) globally known for the development of India’s first patented biopharmaceutical drug to dissolve blood clots. Group’s director Girish Sahni said an internal investigation showed the data falsification was the handiwork of a junior author who has since resigned.

House passes bill to transfer Telangana land to Andhra NEW DELHI: Parliament on July 14 passed a bill to transfer parts of Telanaga’s Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh in connection with the construction of the Polavaram irrigation project with the Rajya Sabha giving its assent to the measure. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 11, will transfer 136 villages, 211 hamlets and seven mandals of Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh, where they will become part of the East Godavari district.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured the members of the upper house that all precautions will be taken to protect the interests of tribals who will be affected due to the Polavaram project.

“Socio-economic impact of the project has been taken into consideration. Andhra Pradesh government has assured Chhattisgarh and Odisha that there will be a protective embankment for as many villages as possible,” he said.

ermany became the first European team to win the FIFA World Cup on South American soil, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final thanks to Mario Gotze’s extra time goal at the Maracana Stadium here on July 14. The last time the Germans, playing as West Germany, lifted the World Cup trophy was in 1990 beating Diego Maradona-led Argentina with the same scoreline in Rome.

The two teams were locked goalless after 105 minutes of play and took two German substitutes to

break the deadlock and give Germany their fourth World Cup triumph. Andre Schurrle made inroads down the left hand side, and lofted in a neat cross towards the near post. Gotze took it excellently on his chest and with time and space to move, he brilliantly found the back of the net in the 113rd minute.

Germany and Argentina could not be separated after 90 minutes of play. For the third time in a row the FIFA World Cup final went into extra time after the two teams were locked 0-0 at full-time.

The 65-year-old made the decision following a meeting with Jose Maria Marin, the president of Brazil’s football confederation (CBF), reports Xinhua.

His backroom staff, including assistant manager Carlos Alberto Parreira also stepped down.

“Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and his fellow coaching staff have left their positions,” the CBF said in a statement.

ormer Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene on July 14 announced his retirement from Test cricket after the end of the Test series against South Africa and Pakistan in August.

ICC charges James Anderson of misconduct IANS, NOTTINGHAM

ngland fast bowler James Anderson has been charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for violation of the Code of Conduct by allegedly abusing and pushing India’s Ravindra Jadeja during the first cricket Test at Trent Bridge.

Anderson could miss the final two Tests of the series if found guilty of the Level 3 offense, which is seen as serious and range from physical altercations to use of offensive language.

In retaliation, a “shocked” England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has accused Jadeja of a lesser offense as they do not want both players — especially Anderson — to be forced to miss the final two Tests. The ECB has decided to contest the misconduct allegations against Anderson and in turn seek sanction against Jadeja. A statement from the ECB read: “The England and Wales Cricket Board has today reacted with surprise that the India team has made allegations against James Anderson under Level 3 of

the ICC Code of Conduct for a minor incident involving Ravindra Jadeja during the first Investec Test match at Trent Bridge.

“In the light of this, the ECB has notified the ICC of its intention to lodge code of conduct breaches against Jadeja.”

Anderson, who was involved in world record last-wicket partnership with Joe Root in the drawn Test, was involved in some verbal altercations with Jadeja as the batsman and his captain MS Dhoni walked off for lunch. India allege that when the teams were inside the pavilion Anderson pushed the all-rounder.

EW YORK -- A grand reception awaits Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the 64-year-old former Gujarat Chief Minister arrives in New York on September

In what was the first meeting of its kind, about 250 members of the Indian-American community from all walks of life gathered at the TV Asia auditorium on July 12 to discuss a plan of action to accord a warm welcome to Modi.

The meeting was not organized by any particular organization but by a group of well-wishers who called themselves ‘volunteers’ with guidance being offered by Dr Bharat Barai, a community leader and philanthropist who is also an Indiana-based oncologist of repute.

Dyaneshwar Mulay, Consul-General (CG) in New York, said that the reception would be a community

event with no government patronage, adding that his office would play only a supporting role.

He advised everyone to work unitedly to make the welcome function a grand success.

It is learnt that besides a reception committee, various other all-inclusive panels will be formed to chalk out a grandiose plan for a memorable welcome to the popular leader who led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a landslide victory in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

The panels will comprise community leaders from all states of the US and people from various prominent Indian and ethnic organizations who are believed to have been searching for a venue that can accommodate at least 100,000 people.

The 60,000-capacity Yankee Stadium in New York and the 80,000-seat Giants Stadium in New Jersey are already booked for the last week of September for other programs.

However, though the meeting at the TV Asia

auditorium ended on a quiet note, everything was not hunky-dory during the lively proceedings with some of the members raising a hue and cry over little or no representation to New York and New Jersey in the panels.

Others also expressed the apprehension that Dr Barai, former head of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, would ‘hijack the event’ and ‘take credit’ for the success of the Modi reception.

However, CG Mulay soon joined the discussion and pacified all groups, asking everyone to bury the hatchet and appealed to them to stand shoulder to shoulder to see that the rare occasion passed off without any controversy.

bout 250 members of the Indian-American community representing various Indian-American associations in New York and New Jersey area had gathered on July 12 at the TV Asia Auditorium in New York (see report on this page) to discuss plans for according a rousing reception to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visits New

York in September.

Some of those who attended the first-of-its-kind deliberations are believed to have created a ruckus at the meeting in organizing which Dr Bharat Barai, a prominent oncologist from Indiana and a former head of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, played a key role.

Dr Barai, in an email to Hi India, sets the record straight to end the needles controversy. The following is his version of what transpired at the meeting: “We had arranged a meeting, inviting 2 representatives of each Indian American associations in NY-NJ area on July 12, 2014 at the TV Asia Auditorium. The meeting was attended by about 260 people. Some uninvited elements also attended.

“At the beginning, it appeared that a small group of 9 people tried to question the meeting and the ‘Authority’ of the people holding the meeting. Mr Ankur Vaidya, president of a group called FIA spoke. He was explained the process and a document from the embassy for the Madison Square Garden was read.

“The rest of the 250 people were not happy at such distraction and tried to shout him out. We handled the situation coolly and calmly in a professional manner. We invited Mr Vaidya to come to the podium and give his views briefly. Rest of the people booed and shouted at him down.

I requested the guests to respect his right to give his views.

“He spoke calmly, gave some points and then he and 8 others left the auditorium calmly. Several speakers spoke and

stressed the importance of working in a united fashion to present the best show in support of PM Modi, India and the Indian American Community. We all emphasized that we were all working as volunteers for this cause. The attendees were very supportive.

“Then Mr Shalli Kumar from Chicago (who was not invited) came and stated that he had met the Consul General of New York 2 days ago and the CG had called him, advising that this meeting should be adjourned and the CG had told him that he will appoint a new committee for this event.

“That threw every one in confusion. He further stated that there was no need for fund-raising and he will give $1 million. Several members protested that one man was trying to buy out the program. Some members shouted at him that in the past, he had made many such donation promises, but never donated a penny.

“Some members present, texted to CG about the use of his name and “attempt by CG to impose his committee”, as announced by Shalli Kumar. CG called me and clarified that he had not stated any such thing. He confirmed that by sending the text message to that effect. He personally came there and clarified the situation appropriately. His role was very constructive.

“Mr Shalli Kumar’s role in using name of many dignitaries of India and Republican officials is well known and referenced on Google. The members present were requested to put their names for the committees that they would like to serve. The meeting ended on a very good note and work will proceed as planned.

“I must emphasize that out of 260 association representatives, only 9 (7 of them uninvited) tried to create distraction and falsify-dramatize in name of the CG of NY. The rest of the people were very decent and supportive.

“We have already filed application with Madison Square Garden and hope to sign the contract ASAP. The rest of the work is proceeding as usual.”

New Delhi, July 16 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday described Brazil as India’s “key global partner”, and reaffirmed to President Dilma Rousseff the “vast potential” for bilateral cooperation, a PMO statement said.

Modi was earlier received with full military honours at the presidential palace in the Brazilian capital Brasilia. He is in Brazil for the sixth BRICS summit.

“Modi noted that as two democracies and major emerging economies, India and Brazil not only had vast potential for bilateral cooperation, but also to strengthen each other in international forums and advance the interest of the developing world at large,” the statement said.

Rousseff, whom Modi congratulated for hosting an “excellent” FIFA World Cup, emphasised the international significance of the partnership between India and Brazil.

“Rousseff congratulated Narendra Modi for his impressive victory in the (Lok Sabha) elections and wished him all success for India’s progress and development,” the statement said.

Modi described the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit as “a historic one, which has produced two important agreements -- the New Development Bank and the BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement -- and lauded Rousseff for her guidance during the summit”.

— Kanathur N. (Kanti) Srikanth, an Indian American leader in transportation planning with thorough knowledge of the national capital region, has been named the director of Transportation Planning for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

Currently, the director of Transportation Planning for the Northern Virginia District of the Virginia Department of Transportation, Srikanth will succeed the late Ronald F. Kirby, who served in this position from 1987 to 2013.

Srikanth will oversee an $18-million annual budget and manage a staff of 60 employees in COG’s Department of Transportation Planning, which supports the TPB and its associated committees.

Srikanth has more than 25 years of experience in transportation planning in the region, having served in various roles for VDOT since 1994.

He received a master of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Bangalore University in India. The Council of Governments conducted a nationwide search for the position and received more than 45 applications.

3 of Indian family killed in accident

OUSTON (TX) -- Three members of an IndianAmerican family died when their car was hit by a pickup driven by a possibly drunk woman in the US state of Texas..

Ryera Patel, 5, and Trish Patel, 12, were killed along with their mother Heena Patel, 43, when their car, driven by father Ketan Patel, 42, swerved to avoid the pickup driven by Shelby Taylor, 22, in Kilgore city in eastern Texas on July 10.

The parents were taken to the Good Shepherd Medical Centre in Longview, where Heena succumbed to her injures.

Ketan Patel was discharged after being treated for minor injuries.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Trooper Jean Dark said Taylor was travelling in the wrong direction in the northbound lane of US 259 near Dudley Road when her pickup collided with the car carrying the Patel family from Caldwell in central Texas.

She said the children were not wearing seat belts.

Taylor was subsequently charged with two counts of intoxication and manslaughter and is being held on two $250,000 bonds and one $1,000 bond.

Taylor and passenger Sara Furlong, 21, were treated for injuries and released.

Later the pujan of four mukhya Hindu Acharyas namely Adi Shankarachary, Ramanujachrya, Madhvacharya and Maha Prabhu Vallabhachrya was performed by both priests of the temple.

Temple performs each event in a unique Hindu way to preserve and teach our rituals and culture to youngster. More than 70 seniors including ladies and gents of Lake County were honored as our real Gurus in the family and society. New light on protein as anti-bacterial agent

HICAGO (IL) — Researchers led by Dr. Ravi Ranjan, an Indian American research scientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine here, have discovered how a protein molecule in immune cells promotes the production of nitric oxide, a potent weapon in the cells’ arsenal to defend the body from bacterial attack.

The protein may offer a target for reining in the inflammatory response, which must be able to fight infection without damaging tissue.

The study was published in the Journal of Innate Immunity.

NFATc3 is one of several related protein molecules known to play a role in regulating genes in the T and B cells of the immune system.

Ranjan, who is first author on the paper, said he and his collaborators wanted to know if NFATc3 also had any function in macrophages – specialized killer cells that hunt down, engulf and destroy

marauding bacteria.

Macrophages kill using chemicals, including nitric oxide, that they synthesize in response to infection. Macrophages are also important in reducing the

inflammation in sepsis, an out-of-control reaction to infection that can cause organ failure and death.

When the researchers exposed macrophages to chemicals that signal a bacterial infection, they found that NFATc3 increasingly bound to genes that boost the production of nitric oxide synthase — the enzyme that makes nitric oxide.

“Without the ability to synthesize inducible nitric oxide synthase, a macrophage would be missing a key element of its chemical weaponry,” Ranjan said in a press release.

To test this hypothesis, the researchers then induced sepsis in mice that lacked the ability to make NFATc3. As expected, lung tissue from these mice had a much higher bacterial load than the lung tissue of septic mice that could produce NFATc3.

“Our study demonstrates that NFATc3 is required for macrophages to effectively fight infection, because without it, they can’t make their primary bactericidal agent — nitric oxide,” Ranjan said.

ELLEVILLE (IL) -- A southwestern Illinois village’s mayor will lose her job after she pleaded guilty was sentenced to probation in connection with charges that she smuggled a cellphone to her jailed niece.

Alorton Mayor JoAnn Reed has pleaded guilty in St. Clair County Court to a charge of causing another to bring contraband into a penal institution.

She was sentenced to two years of probation, 60 hours of community service and court-ordered drug treatment.

Reed admitted she sneaked a cellphone to her niece at the Alorton jail in February 2013.

She was later elected mayor of the village and has worked for the county sheriff ’s department for 28 years.

Prosecutors dropped two official misconduct charges in exchange for her guilty plea.

CVS Pharmacy halts sales of cold drugs in W Virginia

EST VIRGINIA -CVS Pharmacy said they had halted sales of some cold medicines in West Virginia as part of the efforts to fight abuse of methamphetamine in that state.

The company says they will no longer sell “single-ingredient pseudo ephedrine,” which is often sold and available under the brand name Sudafed.

Competing national pharmacy chains Rite-Aid and Walgreen’s have also stopped sales of the products there.

According to state officials, law enforcement seized a record 530 meth labs in West Virginia last year. So far this year, another 207 labs have been seized there.

“We took this step as part of our longstanding commitment to assuring that PSE products are purchased at our stores only for legitimate medical purposes,” said a CVS spokesman.

In addition to stopping sales of the product in its West Virginia stores, the company said it would end sales of pseudo ephedrine at stores located within 15 miles of the state boarder in the neighboring states of Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

High-voltage dance performances were presented by 11 top teams from Illinois. The talent show consisted of performances by youth as well as a talented group of elders aged between 60 and 65 years.

Salil Mishra, president, AIA Illinois, in his welcome remarks said the AIA had tried to achieve its objectives and implement its strategies.

f you cannot resist the sweets kept in your refrigerator and crave for food even after a sumptuous meal, you could be a victim of overeating, warn health experts. Stress, long hours of starvation and the wide variety of food options available in the market contribute to overeating, they say.

Listing the various reasons that lead to overeating, dietitian Akshita Aggarwal told IANS: “Usually, when people feel emotional, stressed, are under any trauma or have any discomfort, they tend to eat a lot.”

She added that sometimes people overeat when there is a long gap between two meals. “Some people eat more to feel better and overcome trauma,” Aggarwal added.

“Apart from overeating, stress can also cause under-eating. Under eating leads to hair fall, calcium deficiency, less immunity, lack of glow on the face and anemia,” Choudhary added.

However, Pawan Sethi, nutritionist at Dr. Rachna’s Diet in Mansarovar Garden, said that the percentage of people who eat when stressed is lower.

“Rather, people these days earn well and have more affordable food options to select from. Also, the number of outings have increased where they end up eating more junk which leads to their being overweight,” added Sethi.

Experts add that skipping or having a late breakfast is also a reason for being overweight.

“These days, people leave for work early and by the time they have their food, it gets late. Since

She added that though there is no particular age for a person to suffer from the condition, it can even start from a very young age.

“The condition is usually seen in youngsters as they eat more junk food, but even elders suffer from the same problem,” said Sethi.

Adding, ‘If compulsive overeating, is not treated it can lead to diseases like obesity, diabetics, heart disease, hypertension, depression, kidney disease and high cholesterol.’

The group receiving text messages decreased their self-reported binge drinking days by 51 percent and decreased the number of self-reported drinks per day by 31 percent.

“We need to intervene in a meaningful way in the health and habits of people when they are young,” Suffoletto added.

n a significant discovery, researchers have invented a cheap and hand-held device to diagnose type-1 diabetes at home.

People who are at risk of developing type-1 diabetes can also benefit from the nanotech microchip-based device because it will allow doctors to quickly track if they can have the disease later in life. “With the new test, not only do we anticipate being

able to diagnose diabetes more efficiently and more broadly, we will also understand diabetes better,” said Brian Feldman, at Stanford University.

The handheld microchips distinguish between the two main forms of diabetes mellitus — type-1 and type-2 — which are both characterized by high blood-sugar levels but have different causes and treatments. The test was validated with blood samples from people newly diagnosed with diabetes and from people without diabetes. Both groups had the old test and the microchip-based test performed on their blood.

The new microchip uses no radioactivity, produces results in minutes and requires minimal training to use.

n a significant finding, NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has discovered its first meteorites on the red planet, which scientists have named ‘Lebanon’ and its smaller companion ‘Lebanon B’.

The Mars meteorites were found May 25 and NASA released a detailed photo of the Lebanon meteorites on July 15.

Curiosity took detailed pictures of the main Lebanon meteorite using its high-resolution Chem-Cam and Remote MicroImager cameras.

The images revealed strange angular cavities in the surface of the rock.

“One possible explanation is that they resulted from preferential erosion along crystalline boundaries within the metal of the rock,” NASA officials wrote in a statement.

“Another possibility is that these cavities once contained olivine crystals, which can be found in a rare type of stony-iron meteorites called pallasites, thought to have been formed near the core-mantle boundary within an asteroid.”
