Obama unveils clean power plan India’s rise is in US’ interest and a strong US is in India’s interest, he says ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

P

resident Barack Obama unveiled a plan to reduce emissions from coal-fired power plants citing how global climate changes were affecting the world with more storms, droughts and floods and decimating crops from India to Africa. “This is our moment to get this right and leave something better for our kids,” he said calling his Clean Power Plan “the single most important step America has ever taken in the fight against global climate change.” “Climate change is no longer just about the future we’re predicting for our children or our grandchildren, it’s about the reality that we’re living with every day - right now,” said Obama pointing to stronger storms, deeper droughts and more frequent floods. The White House says the

revised Clean Power Plan seeks to increase the required cuts in carbon emissions from the power sector, demanding they be slashed 32 percent from 2005 levels by 2030up from the 30 percent requirement in the original draft regula-

tion. Obama said such a reduction means “we’ll be keeping 870 million tons of carbon dioxide pollution out of our atmosphere.” Earlier addressing the Young African Leaders Initiative Presidential Summit Town Hall, Obama

said “Global climate change will affect everybody.” “And because the changes could be so severe, frankly, the countries that are most likely to be adversely affected are the poorer countries because they have less margin for error.” “So if you have changing weather patterns in, let’s say, the Indian Subcontinent, and the monsoon rains shift, suddenly you could have millions of people whose crops completely fail,” Obama said. “Well, the same is true in Africaif rain patterns and drought starts changing, subsistence farmers are completely vulnerable,” he said. Asked how Obama’s Clean Power Plan relates to world climate summit in Paris in December, his press secretary Josh Earnest cited “lot of success” in getting significant commitments from several countries including India, China and Brazil.

US Prez race: Voters spoiled for choice WASHINGTON: American voters looking for a new tenant for the White House are spoiled for choice with 22 candidates, five Democrats and 17 Republicans, including long shot Indian-American Bobby Jindal in the 2016 presidential race. Leading the Democratic pack is Hillary Clinton, 67, former First Lady and Secretary of State with more than half the party voters backing her but independent socialist senator Bernie Sanders, 73, is fast closing the gap with 17 percent in recent polls. And if Vice President Joe Biden, 72, too jumps into the fray as speculated, it could really stir the Democratic pot amid questions being raised afresh about Clinton’s use of private email and her handling of the 2012 attack on an American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. Biden has been “talking to people about jumping in” to challenge Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Ami Bera introduces Jindal fails to make the cut for first debate resolution on India’s I-Day WASHINGTON: Ami Bera, Co-chair of Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, has introduced a resolution to recognize India’s Independence Day and the significance of the US-India partnership. Besides Trump, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, author and neurosurgeon Ben Carson and conservative firebrand Cuban American Texas senator Ted Cruz made the top six. They will be joined on the main stage by Cuban American Florida senator Marco Rubio, libertarian conservative Kentucky senator and physician Rand Paul, New Jersey governor Chris Christie and Ohio

governor John Kasich. Finishing thirteenth, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, 44, a former vice chairman of the Republican Governors’ Association, was relegated to an earlier forum the same day with the six other candidates

lowest in Fox’s selection of polls. They included former Texas governor Rick Perry, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, former HP chief executive Carly Fiorina, South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham, former New York governor George Pataki, and former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore. The debate in Cleveland, Ohio, marks the beginning of a new stage in the Republican nominating contest, where candidates will match their wits against each other as they try to project how they are best positioned to take on Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton. In an unusual move backed by the Republican National Committee, Fox decided to rely on national polling data to split the contenders in two groups.

resident Barack Obama celebrated his birthday in an unusual way by hosting the first-ever White House Demo Day where innovators from around the country, including three IndianAmericans, ‘demoed’ their individual stories. “As a birthday treat to me, I thought I’d invite business leaders, investors, and government officials here for the first-ever White House Demo Day,” he said amid applause as he came to look at exhibits set up in the State Dining Room Tuesday. Three Indian-Americans who showcased their projects were Pri-

vahini Bradoo of San Francisco, Suma Reddy of New York and Ann Marie Sastry of Ann Arbor, Michigan. According to the White House Bradoo’s BlueOak project finds the treasure in trashed smartphones. Reddy’s Waddle helps people dis-

Two trains derail, 27 dead Two trains derail in quick succession in Madhya Pradesh’s Harda district while crossing a river; bridge caved in due to heavy rains, authorities say caved in due to heavy rains, authorities say IANS, BHOPAL

Flash floods caused accidents: Prabhu

t least 27 people were killed when two trains derailed in quick succession and some coaches fell into a river in Madhya Pradesh’s Harda district, authorities said on August 5. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said 27 people were killed when 21 coaches of the trains derailed shortly before midnight August 4 on the Kali Machak river. One of the trains was the Varanasi-bound Kamayani Express, which met with the accident at about 11.20 p.m. Less than 15 minutes later, the Mumbai-bound Janata Express on the other track also met the same fate -- at that very spot. Desperate passengers screamed in pain and terror as they tried to claw their way out of the mangled coaches. A few did come out, bruised and bleeding, but some couldn’t. The shaken survivors said they were jolted out of their sleep when their coach fell into the river with a

Cong protests against suspension of MPs NEW DELHI: Congress leaders and MPs on August 5 continued their protest against the suspension of 25 of its Lok Sabha members by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. ment complex. While some leaders wore black bands on their arms, other held black flags. On August 3, Mahajan suspended the Congress MPs for five days for “wilfully obstructing the business of the house” and not adhering to her repeated requests to observe the rules in the house. Sonia Gandhi has dubbed the suspension a “murder” of democracy.

NEW DELHI: Flash floods due to heavy rains caused the twin train accidents in Madhya Pradesh, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said on August 5. Making a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha, Prabhu said that the government has announced compensation of Rs.200,000 for the next of kin of those killed in the accident. He said Rs.50,000 would be given to those grievously injured and Rs.25,000 to those with minor injuries. “The accident took place late

thunder. A Kamayani Express passenger said the first few coaches of the train crossed the river but those after the fourth coach plunged into the water. “Many of us had to swim out of the coach,” said the visibly rattled passenger. The tracks were badly twisted in the wake of the disaster. The coaches landed in awkward

angles, making the search operation difficult for divers looking for bodies in the river. The cause of the accident was not clear. Some said the bridge over the river may have caved in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the deaths “deeply distressing”, and said he was “deeply pained over the loss of lives. Condolences to families of deceased.

“My prayers with the injured. Authorities are doing everything possible on the ground. The situation is being monitored very closely.” Authorities admitted that the death toll was likely to rise. I.B. Siddiqui, a spokesperson for the West Central Railway, initially told IANS that six coaches of the Kamayani and Janata Express

derailed from their tracks and fell into the river. The number was later revised to 21. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu ordered an inquiry into the twin derailment and announced compensation to the families of the victims. He said villagers were assisting in the rescue efforts. He said “everything possible (was) being done”.

Pak terrorist captured as ambush kills two BSF men SHEIKH QAYOOM, JAMMU

F

or the first time after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, Indian security forces on August 5 captured a Pakistani terrorist shortly after militants killed two BSF troopers in Jammu and Kashmir. Police officials said the young terrorist, identified as Usman alias Qasim Khan, hailed from Gujranwala in Pakistan and was linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the group which carried out the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. As he was brought down from a mountainous village bound by ropes, the terrorist, believed to be not over 18-years old, looked has-

sled. He wore a black shirt and trouser. A short while later, security personnel hooded his face. The dramatic development took place after two militants, reportedly from Pakistan, ambushed a Border

Security Force convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Udhampur district, killing two troopers and injuring 11. This happened around 7.30 a.m. at Narsu Nallah, 65 km from Jammu. One of the militants was shot dead by the BSF personnel who were on their way to the Kashmir Valley. The second attacker fled from the spot, towards Chirdi village in the hills, pursued by security forces. In the small village, the armed man first took hostage three civilians and forced them to give him food, witnesses later told journalists. He also kept asking about the fate of his colleague.

Non-bailable warrant issued against Lalit Modi IANS, MUMBAI

A

special court here issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former IPL chairman Lalit Modi on August 5 for his alleged involvement in a moneylaundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Last month, the ED has moved the Special court seeking issue of arrest warrant for investigating the case against the business tycoon and cricket manager. Despite repeated attempts, Modi’s

lawyers did not respond to calls and SMSes on his reaction in the matter. When the matter came up before the court on Tuesday, Special Judge P.R. Bhavake wanted to know from the ED how an arrest warrant could be issued without a charge-sheet being filed in the case and whether the court had powers to do so. ED counsel H. Venegaonkar submitted that under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the cases follow a different format compared to the regular criminal cases.

According to one account, when a group of villagers nabbed him, he began to plead: “Mujhe mat pakdo, mujhe mat pakdo.” (Don’t catch me, don’t catch me.) A BSF officer said he was being interrogated by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. It was the first attack on that stretch of the JammuSrinagar highway after 15 long years. The BSF vehicle was peppered with bullets but the men fought back, the officer said. Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he had spoken to BSF chief D.K. Pathak. The attack took place on the 300km highway that links Jammu region with the Kashmir Valley and is practically a lifeline for Srinagar.

Muslims are with Owaisi The manner in which Asaduddin Owaisi agressively juxtaposed the Mumbai riots of January-February against the blasts of March enthralled the spectators present there

towards the end, Rusi Karanjia did not always know what he was saying and what he meant precisely. In this situation, almost by default, the man on the white charger happens to be Asaduddin Owaisi. He pulls no punches, and is more articulate than most political leaders and TV panellists. For his opponents he is flawed because he holds his ground with expert

references to the Constitution. How this Sole Spokesman phenomena plays itself out has to be watched. While there was no mercy for Memon despite the gaping holes in the case, the open and shut case of Rajiv Gandhi's murderer, was considered worthy of a pardon. Likewise, Devinder Singh Bhullar, convicted for the Delhi blasts, has

escaped being hanged. There is a simple political angle. Karunanidhi and Parkash Singh Badal can pull strings with the centre for individuals from their respective states because of their participation in national coalition. On January 5, 1993 riots erupted in Mumbai in similar fashion. An orgy of arson, loot, murder of Muslims by Shiv Sainiks, abetted by the police crossed the borders of the macabre. This was not dissimilar to the Gujarat riots of 1969 where I found myself in my capacity as Press Officer to the Frontier Gandhi, Abdul Ghaffar Khan, then on a year long visit to India. The Congress chief minister was Hitendra Desai. Over 500 people, mostly Muslims were murdered. The singer Rasoolan Bai’s house was also gutted. It is a fallacy that the Gujarat pogrom of 2002 were worse than the one sided massacre in the January-February Mumbai mayhem supervised by Bal Thackeray and overseen by the Congress Chief Minister, Sudhakar Naik. He was not liked by Pawar who, was defence minister then in Delhi smarting under the fact that Narasimha Rao had bypassed Pranab Mukherjee and him to job.

(40 per cent level whisky or vodka) a week is acceptable. He says 100-120 ml alcohol a day will trigger changes in human heart and its functions. But most others would draw the line a little higher, cautioning that moderation is the key word when it comes to drinking. “This means an average of one to two small drinks for men and one small drink for women a day,” explains Dr SS Sibia, medical director at the Sibia Medical Centre in

Ludhiana known for non-invasive treatments for various diseases. “If you can, skip drinking for a couple of days in a month,” he advises. Dr Lekha Pathak, director (cardiology department) at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital in Mumbai feels that drinking everyday more than two small pegs is not healthy. “It is true that alcohol, if taken in medicinal doses, has good effects on health but nobody takes it in medicinal doses.

Of those who drink, many are real alcoholics not drinking less than three to four large pegs a day,” she told IANS. Alcohol’s anti-clotting ability may also protect you against heart attack but the excess increases the risk of brain stroke and other illnesses like caner. Even moderate drinking is dangerous for those with uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension or liver disease.

SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI

I

had turned up in Mumbai to cover the aftermath of the 1993 bomb blasts. On my way to meet Rusi Karanjia editor of Blitz and journalist Olga Tellis, at the US Club in Cuff Parade, I tried to engage with my Muslim taxi driver. “How were Muslims reacting to the blasts.” He was abrupt to the point of being rude. He said he was a hard working man who did not have time to concern himself “with riots and blasts”. He asked me if I was a Muslim. “Recite the Kalma”, he demanded. Then, reluctantly, he pulled the taxi by the side of the road. “Dekho, sab barabar ho gaya.”(Look, it is even now). “Ab train mein enter karo aur kaho ‘Assalamalaikum’, sub raaste dete hain.” (Now, enter the train and greet them like a Muslim and they make way for you.) This precisely, was the sentiment that had to be crushed, Karanjia said, after I told him the story. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Karanjia had shed all left wing pretensions. He now spoke the language of the extreme right. The way he juxtaposed the

Mumbai riots of January-February against the blasts of March took my breath away. According to him, the state had sided with the rioters during the riots. That is why there was no reprieve for the victims as well. The blasts were an assault on the Indian State. This would not be tolerated. His brazen endorsement of majoritarianism planted the first doubts in my mind that

Love drinking? Raise a toast to moderation NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI

NEW DELHI: Have you heard of “Holiday Heart Syndrome”? It happens when a non-drinker or a light drinker gives in to the weekend party mood and goes on a drinking spree. If this becomes a habit then on one ill-fated evening the person may get severe chest pain, irregular heart beat and breathlessness. The blood pressure may shoot up, increasing the risk of cardiac arrest and sudden death. If this scenario scares you, then being an alcohol-lover you need to learn what responsible or moderate drinking is all about. According to some of the nation’s top cardiologists, when it comes to heart health, alcohol is like a slippery

slope. While moderation may help your heart function normally in your golden years, heavy or binge drinking will lead to serious consequences for your cardiac health. So how much is too much? Dr Subhash Chandra, chairman (cardiology) at BLK Heart Centre says that anything in excess of 350 ml of beer, 150 ml of wine or 45 ml of hard liquor (40 percent alcohol by volume) a day is bad for heart. Dr Ajay Mittal, cardiologist from Max Super Speciality Hospital in Patparganj agrees. But others say that the level of moderation should be lower. Dr TS Kler, executive director (cardiac sciences) at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre in New Delhi, says up to 60 ml of hard liquor

akistan must admit its mistakes for allowing Pakistani terrorists to sail to Mumbai and carry out the horrific massacre in Mumbai in 2008, almost bringing Islamabad and Delhi to war, a former senior Pakistani official has said. The revelation vindicates India’s stand that 99 percent of the evidence of the 26/11 attacks lies in Pakistan since the entire plotting was done in that country, sources said on Tuesday. Tariq Khosa, a former director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), equivalent of India’s CBI, wrote in the Dawn newspaper that “Pakistan has to deal with the Mumbai mayhem, planned and launched from its soil”. “This requires facing the truth and admitting mistakes,” he said, detailing the various Pakistani links to the terrorists who massacred 166

US, Japan discuss spying issue WASHINGTON: US Vice President Joe Biden spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe over the phone after the Wikileaks website revealed alleged US spying on Japanese officials and companies. Biden reaffirmed the commitment made by the US President Barack Obama to “focus our intelligence collection on national security interests”, Xinhua reported. The Wikileaks website posted NSA reports and a list of 35 Japanese targets for telephone intercepts, including Japanese cabinet office and the Bank of Japan.

Indians and foreigners over three days in India’s financial capital. “The entire state security apparatus must ensure that the perpetrators and masterminds of the ghastly terror attacks are brought to justice,” Khosa said, underlining that the case had lingered on for far too long.

“What he (Khosa) has said vindicates our stand. India has been maintaining since 2008 that the entire plotting and financing was done in Pakistan,” the source added. According to noted strategic expert Uday Bhaskar, the revelations by Khosa are an important state-

ment in the public domain. “The author is a former DG of the FIA and his observations are that of a seasoned senior professional,” Bhaskar said, adding that the most valuable parts of Khosa’s revelations “are the detailing of pertinent ‘facts’ that have been unearthed.

Afghans thank India for dam IANS, KABUL

P

eople in Afghanistan’s western province of Herat were on August 4 full of praise for India for its key role in the reconstruction of the nation, especially construction of the Salma dam which is nearing completion and whose reservoirs have started filling up with the much-needed water. A group of grateful residents went to the Indian consulate there and expressed their gratitude to the Indian officials for the key role played by India in the reconstruction of Afghanistan, particularly the Salma dam — the biggest pro-

ject by the Indian government in the country. Local musicians sang Indian songs and presented flowers to workers of the consulate. India is spending $300 million on the dam project, expected to produce 42 MW of electricity and water nearly 80,000 hectares of farmland, according to Afghan news agency Khaama Press.

Gurdwara killings: Sikhs observe seva A US-based Sikh organization observes annual day of seva (service) across 18 cities to commemorate the 2012 Wisconsin gurdwara shooting in which six people were killed; calls to end communal hatred IANS, WASHINGTON/NEW DELHI

US-based Sikh organization observed a day of seva (service) across 18 cities to commemorate the 2012 Wisconsin gurdwara shooting. Six people were shot dead at the Oak Creek city gurdwara in Milwaukee county, Wisconsin, on August 5, 2012. The gunman was later killed and the incident was deemed a hate crime. The Sikh Coalition — a community-based organization that works toward the realization of civil and human rights — organized the commemoration on August 2. “When a tragedy like this occurs, the Sikh community feels the pain and suffering that comes from an attack born of hate. We want people to see that this type of attack is not just an attack against one community, it is an attack against all of us,”

Six people were shot dead at the Oak Creek city gurdwara in Wisconsin on August 5, 2012. The incident was deemed a hate crime.

Harjit Kaur, the seva coordinator, told IANS. “The anguish we felt after the Oak Creek Massacre has since transformed into a call for action to end hate,” she added.

The coalition organized the “Chardhi Kala 6K Memorial Walk and Run” in Oak Creek. “The Sikh spirit of chardi kala or eternal optimism inspires Sikhs to stay strong

even in the face of hate,” Jasvir Singh, participant in Detroit’s Day of Seva event, said. “It is what motivates us to combat hate with love and seva, to remain positive and to keep working toward a tomorrow that recognizes all beings as one human race. This feeling is ingrained in our seva,” Singh added. The organization also took up the annual Morning Side Park clean up in New York city. “Our annual park clean up in New York has been an incredible pleasure over the past two years. It is always heartening to have bystanders stop and ask about our motivation for the ‘Day of Seva’ and strive to learn more about Sikhism,” Satjeet Kaur, director of development and communications for the Sikh Coalition, informed. “Seeing others’ eagerness to join in the service we are doing demonstrates that seva is a great way to engage both Sikhs and non-Sikhs.”

Church building to turn into gurdwara in US WASHINGTON: In a historical moment for the Sikh community in the US, a foreclosed building that used to be a Baptist church will be renovated as the first Sikh temple in Rockford, Illinois, media reported on Thursday. The building on Kishwaukee Street and 3rd Avenue in the Forest City will be renamed as Nanaksar Sikh Temple. There are nearly 100 Sikh families in the area. Right now, they drive all the way to Chicago, Milwaukee or Madison for worship. However, the task of doing up the foreclosed building is daunting as $100,000 worth of renovation work needs to be done. The temple will have a grand opening in April next year.

The food lovers are making a beeline to Tanya Gohil’s stall called Devi’s at Maltby Street market here. Gohil’s stall sells dishes like the “Mmmmumbai Grill” — her take on a grilled club sandwich. Gohil, who studied economics and development at Manchester University, has visited India twice. The first visit was to help a girls’ education organization and the sec-

ond for road-testing recipes. She aims to raise up to 20,000 pounds through crowd-funding to buy land in Jaisalmer on which to build a school. Gohil is hopeful that her efforts will help bring about real change in India.

Archery: India settle for silver India lost the World Championship final 4-5 to Russia; Laxmirani fails to beat her sixth seeded opponent from South Korea, Misun Choi, who won 6-4 IANS, COPENHAGEN

espite surging into a 40 lead, the Indian women’s recurve archery team of Deepika Kumari, Laxmirani Majhi and Rimil Buriuly had to settle for the silver as they lost the World Championship final 4-5 to Russia in an edge-of-the-seat encounter at the Christiansborg Palace here. Later in the day, Laxmirani had an opportunity to grab a bronze in the women’s individual recurve section but she failed to get past her sixth seeded opponent from South Korea, Misun Choi, who won 6-4. laying an aggressive game, the Indian hockey team defeated France 2-0 in the first of two matches here. Chinglensana Singh and S.V. Sunil helped India dominate and kept the European team under pressure. France came back strongly after the third quarter but failed to breach the Indian defense line this week. At the start, both teams attacked aggressively on each other’s half and tried score first. After a series of attacks from both sides, midfielder Chinglensana sneaked into French half and hit the ball into the box to score the first goal of the match in the 18th minute.

With the lead, World No.8 India took control of the match and put France under tremendous pressure. India didn’t allow the hosts to take control of possession as France struggled in rest of the quarter. After continuous attacks, Sunil dribbled past French defenders and sent the ball into the net for the second goal in the 26th minute. At halftime, India led 2-0. In the third quarter, the hosts stepped on the gas and surprised India with their quick passes. The fourth quarter saw some a closely-fought battle as both teams pushed each other for goals. But it was France who earned two back-to-back penalty corners.

first set 56-54. They were again steady in the second set to take it 54-53 and thus take a 4-0 lead. The Russians slowly got into

their groove to pocket two 10 pointers in the third set when they needed them most to edge past the Indians. They claimed the third set

56-52 to come back into the contest at 2-4. The Indians failed to respond and crumbled under pressure in the fourth set as they amassed only 50 points which was easily surpassed by their rivals who then leveled the contest at 4-4, taking the match into the tie-breaker. The decider turned out to be a thrilling contest as India’s 10 was matched with another 10 points from Russia. But an eight-pointer cost India the match as the Russian trio hit two back-to-back nines to clinch the contest and the gold medal. The silver comes as the second one in as many days after Rajat Chauhan bagged a historic metal. He had put up a tough fight but went down 143-147 to Stephan Hansen of Denmark in the men’s individual compound final.

Govt bans porn sites, ISPs object Service providers say they have no wherewithal to filter out child porn from URLs IANS, NEW DELHI

E

ven as the government has said Internet Service Providers were free not to block any of the 857 websites suspected for pornographic content unless they were abusive of children, the industry body of the ISPs said the directive was “vague and unimplementable”. The Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) has urged the government to withdraw its earlier directive on banning porn sites and the subsequent amendment that the ISPs are “free not to disable any of the 857 URLs”. The letter to the service providers on August 4 was issued by the Department of Telecom and it sought to clarify the position of an earlier missive, in which a list con-

taining the names of 857 sites was provided with a directive that these be blocked for showing pornography. But the ISPAI, which has 50 members, said in its letter that even

Porn websites not difficult to access, despite ban NEW DELHI: With the central government banning some of the pornographic websites, experts believe that accessing the blocked stuff on the Internet, is not difficult as many free proxy and virtual private network (VPN) services make it available for the eager user. The ministry of communications and information and technology, in its order of July 31 under section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act 2000 had banned 857 websites terming their content “immoral and indecent”. Sources in the government, however, denied that there was any crackdown. They said denial of access at department of telecom’s (DoT) instance was “temporary, insisting that it was a prelude to the creation of a regular regulatory oversight. They claimed that the idea was not to “black out or police what peo-

the so called clarification by the government was “unclear, and was imposing an undue burden” on a matter that was beyond their control to regulate.

“We submit that direction given above is very vague and unimplementable, as ISPs have no way or mechanism to filter out child pornography from URLs and further unlimited sub links of the said URLs in different names”, said the letter to the telecom secretary. “Sir, we are totally against online child pornography as well as abuse on women,” the letter said and assured that member organizations will continue to follow the norms, which require web sites that are against “national interest” to be blocked, based on the state’s directives. “We urge you to withdraw the said vague directive as it is not only confusing, but also putting responsibility on ISPs of the website on which ISPs does not have any control,” said the letter, adding that

sites can change the content in no time. But till further directives, the said 857 sites will continue to be blocked, it said. “We want a specific direction from the licensor, not an open ended one, where the onus lies on us of the website that are not owned by us,” Rajesh Chharia, president, ISPAI told IANS. “As such, we have requested the government to provide specific URLs to be blocked or disabled.” The government had earlier said the ban was a temporary measure till final orders were given by the Supreme Court -- which, in its observation on July 8, had said banning such sites will violate an individual’s right to liberty. The apex court is slated to take up the matter on August 10.

W

ple did in their bedrooms.” The government order seem to target many sites which have nothing to do with child pornography. Experts say there’s always a workaround for accessing blocked website as long as its there on the Internet. “The easiest method would be to make use of proxies and VPN’s. Many proxy and VPN services make it possible to access the banned stuff with complete anonymity on the Internet,” Hoshie Ghaswalla, CEO of media business for CyberMedia told IANS.

hen it comes to watching porn online, women are slowly bridging the gap in India with as much as 30 percent of women in India now regularly visiting porn websites, says a study. Last year, 26 percent Indian women were online searching for porn. While lesbian porn was found to be the runaway hit among women, women across the globe are also watching more “hardcore” acts than men, revealed the study done by popular general interest website Pornhub in collaboration with New York-based news website, The Daily Beast. The data came from nearly 40 million Pornhub users. Compared to the worldwide average of 24 percent female porn viewers — an increase of one percent over the previous year, the Philip-

pines and Brazil took the lead with 35 percent female viewers. India and Argentina came in a close second with 30 percent female porn viewers. Using high-tech analytics software, the study revealed that women are also more selective than men

when it comes to online porn viewing. “Women are spending more time watching porn - a worldwide average of 10 minutes and 10 seconds compared to men at just nine minutes and 22 seconds,” the results showed.

Banning porn won’t work, sex education will: Experts NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI

T

erming the government’s crackdown on 857 pornographic websites an “act in haste”, the country’s top sex and behavioral experts have favored making sex education mandatory for young Indian teenagers so that crimes like rape or child molestation can be efficiently curbed. According to them, a crackdown is not the solution as adults have a right to watch porn in the privacy of their homes and that right should not be taken away. “Banning porn websites is not

the solution at all. Educating the youth about what sex and related behaviors are must be on the agen-

da of the present government,” Dr Prakash Kothari, one of India’s leading sexologists based in Mum-

bai, told IANS. The ministry of communications and information and technology, in its order of July 31 under section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act 2000, banned the 857 websites terming their content “immoral and indecent”. The ban will only result in a boom for the pirated porn industry, experts say. “One doubts if this ban can be a fool-proof solution. It will probably increase the sale of pirated porn DVDs. A ban of this kind might actually increase sexual frustration and lead to other sexual and social

problems,” warned Dr Madhuri Singh, consulting psychiatrist at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital in Mumbai. The experts, however, feel that when it comes to child pornography, prompt action is required. “Throughout the world, child porn is banned and generally stays off the internet. Problem is that some adult websites have links that lead to child pornography and those must be dealt sternly with,” noted Dr Samir Parikh, director of mental health and behavioral sciences at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi.

omp and gaiety here on August 2 marked Mahankali Jatra, the annual festival of Secunderabad, popularly known as Lashkar Bonalu. Thousands of people, including Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and central ministers, thronged the Ujjaini Mahankali temple in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad. KCR and his family members performed puja, and offered ‘pattu vastralu’ (silk clothes) to the god-

dess. Union Ministers M. Venkaiah Naidu and Bandaru Dattatreya also visited the temple to perform puja. Many Telangana ministers also made offerings to mark the occasion. A large number of devotees, majority of them women, visited the temple and offered ‘bonalu’ to the goddess. The festival concluded on August 3 with ‘rangam’ (forecasting the future for the next one year) followed by a colorful procession of the goddess on an elephant. Bonalu — dedicated to the goddess of power, Mahankali or Kali —

is celebrated in parts of Hyderabad and Secunderabad during Ashada masam (July-August). Also known as Ashada Jatra Utsavalu, it is celebrated on three different Sundays in different places in the twin cities. This is the second Bonalu after the formation of Telangana state. It is being officially celebrated as the Telangana government declared it the state festival. The folk festival is celebrated to ward off evil and usher in peace. It is believed that the festival was first celebrated over 150 years ago.

ith all the tropes of the romance genre weaved into it, “Ishqedarriyaan” is a typical contrived, mushy and predictable tale of a Prince Charming and a damsel in distress. The Prince here is the young, 20-something, soft-hearted, multibillionaire Agam Diwan, who is in love with his passion and career. Settled in Georgia in the US, he is an enigma that the media houses want to unravel. An investigative journalist, who

believes that “behind every fortune, there is a crime”, he delves into his family history and surfaces with their dodgy and mysterious past. This lead brings Agam Diwan to India. He lands in Himachal Pradesh, where he meets Loveleen, the daughter of the man, his father

is supposed to have cheated. She is in desperate need of funds and teachers to run the Abhinandan Vidya Mandir, a school founded by her grandfather. During their first meeting, instead of initially hearing him out, she mistakes him for a teacher and appoints him. He willingly

obliges. Tables turn. He now works for her and they share an employer-employee relationship. Soon, they become friends. He is her messiah in disguise. He ensures that every wish of hers is fulfilled by playing ‘god’ in her life. He falls in love with her and realises that she is besotted with Arjun, a promising musician. Agam does the sacrificing act till Loveleen realises her folly. The actors deliver their parts sincerely. Mahaakshay, who has a fairly appealing screen presence with a slightly weak voice, charms you as the restrained loverboy Agam. While he is suave and razorsharp as a businessman, he displays equal simplicity and naivete as the teacher in India. Kavin Dave as Agam’s best friend and Man Friday is cliched.

Rishi Kapoor like my father: Abhi

A

ctor Abhishek Bachchan is extremely fond of his “All Is Well” co-star Rishi Kapoor who is “like a father” to him. “You cannot bring your personal life in front of the camera. Personally I love him. He is like a father to me. I’m a huge fan of his. But I cannot bring it in the film because that is the opposite of what I’m meant to play with him in the film,” said Abhishek about translating the off-screen camaraderie to onscreen chemistry in the film where they play a father-son duo. Actor Supriya Pathak and director Umesh Shukla were also present at a special promotional interaction with the media. “What our relationship is in real life is of no importance in front of the camera. We have to only enact our characters. The two characters that we have in the film are of a father and son who don’t get along well. They keep fighting. I thinkPG. 12 he troubles me a lot and he thinks I trouble him a lot. You see those shades that banter keeps on going throughout the film. At the end of the day, we’re actors and our job is to perform in front of the camera,” said Abhishek.

Hundal Law Group shows the way: foreign fiance

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A K-1 Fiancé Visa is the ideal way for a foreign fiancé of an American citizen to lawfully enter the US for getting married. The process has multiple steps: filing the petition, applying for the visa and interview. The most important thing to evidence is proof of an honest, ongoing relationship between the couple with the intent to marry. Be sure to document your meetings, telephone conversations, photographs, emails and letters, among other things. The requirements for a Fiancé Visa are: 1--Petitioner is a US citizen, 2--The couple intends to marry within 90 days of fiancé entering US, 3--the couple is free to marry and any previous marriages have been legally terminated by divorce, death, or annulment, and 4--the couple has met each other, in person, at least once within

C

2 years of filing the petition. There are two exceptions to the fourth requirement of meeting in person: if you can prove (1) meeting would violate strict and long-established customs of your or your fiancé’s foreign culture or social practice, or (2) meeting would result in extreme hardships. After marriage, the newly-weds must apply for Adjustment of Status which will

provide the foreign spouse with a work permit, authorization to freely travel in and out of the US and the status to permanently live in the US. There are many advantages to filing for a Fiancé Visa. If you are not sure about getting married to your foreign fiancé, this visa allows you to be together for 90 days in the US before you actually marry. If things don’t work out as you planned,

then your partner must return to his or her home country. Furthermore, the wait time for a Fiancé Visa is 6 to 7 months on average, which is shorter than the Marriage Visa (on average 11 to 12 months) as there are fewer documents to submit. If your fiancé has children (under 21 and unmarried), a K-2 non-immigrant visa may be available to them so they can accompany their parent and also move to the US. According to a senior Hundal Law Group official, the immigration laws provide many solutions to immigrate your foreign loved ones to the US, whether he or she is a fiancé, spouse, child, parent or sibling. The Hundal Law Group has offices in Illinois, New York and Toronto and practices immigration and business law in the US and Canada. One may contact us at 855-648-6325 for legal help and any questions you have.

COMMUNITY NEWS Hi India, FIA will host grand Mela on I-Day

FRIDAY, 07 AUGUST, 2015

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL– The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA)-Chicago and ‘Hi India’, the Windy City’s popular weekly newspaper, will jointly host a grand Mela following the India Independence Day Parade on August 15. The festivities will be held at 2 pm on the Republic Bank of Chicago premises located on the corner of Devon Ave & Washtenaw in Chicago. Immediately after the conclusion of the parade, a very vibrant Mela, complete with colorful dances, music, singing and other fun-filled activities will take the center-stage on Devon Ave to extend the day of festivities in observance of India’s Independence Day. Iftekhar Shareef, trustee and events Chair, has reminded the community of the fake FIA operating out of Schaumburg, Illinois, who are collecting funds in the name of FIA Chicago and confusing and manipulating the community. “Two individuals who lost FIA election held in 2010 formed another FIA by manipulating the name by a word or so and trying to do an event in Schaumburg. We have no issue if they do events with any other name except FIA Chicago”, he said.

C

According to him, the original FIA was formed in 1980 and it was doing its job, and continuously organizing India Day Parade every year attracting thousands of participants from Midwest. “We are demanding the group to cease from any such activities in the name of FIA-Chicago, otherwise they will be facing legal challenges”, he said, warning the rival organization. Hemant Brahmbhatt, ‘Hi India’ newspaper editor/publisher, and FIA Mela Chair Ajai Agnihotri, have stepped up on the joint collaborative efforts to put together the exciting community festival to continue the celebrations of the Independence Day. Following the incredible success of last year’s Mela, ‘Hi India’ and FIA have teamed up again to jointly host a memorable Mela this year

that is aimed at bringing joy and excitement for a wholesome family fun; while bringing cognizance to India’s independence. ‘Hi India’ and FIA teams are all set to showcase an eclectic mid-afternoon show in the heart of the India Town on Devon Avenue with a host of young dancers who will set the tone for a great afternoon presenting a string of exciting Bollywood dances with the music and the beats that will bring a grand finale to a weekend of India Independence Day celebrations hosted by FIA-Chicago. This Mela is hosted with a string of generous sponsorships support from National Bankcard Corp., Sahil, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways & L A Tan among other sponsors. Chicago’s cab drivers form own local union

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Following decades of being treated like second-class citizens by the City of Chicago, Chicago cab drivers have taken a historic step by forming their own local union, the first in 30 years in Chicago. Over 150 drivers attended Cab Drivers United/AFSCME Local 2500’s inaugural meeting at Malcolm X College. They became full dues-paying members, and pledged to continue the fight for a level playing field with TNPs. They also vowed to continue to build power to demand the respect they deserved as ambassadors of the city, and to provide residents and visitors with the safe and professional service they expected from professional cab drivers. “By chartering our union local with AFSCME, we’re expanding upon the strength we’ve built over the last year; with thousands of drivers signing on to stand together with one united voice, to build the power we need in order to provide permanent solutions to the struggles drivers face every day” said Nnamdi Uwazie, a Chicago cab driver, and founding member of Cab Drivers United/AFSCME Local 2500. “The days where the City of Chicago feels they can treat us like we don’t matter and make decisions that affect us and our passengers without our input are over” added Ezz Abdelmagid, a fellow Chicago cab driver and also a founding member.

A daughter’s ode: a privilege to be a part of my Dad’s life

BY SARAH MERCHANT HICAGO, IL -- It was a devastating loss for all of us. For me, I had lost my biggest cheerleader, most enthusiastic supporter, closest friend, and the best dad in the world. Dad was so ambitious, brilliant, charismatic, and made a respectable name for himself in any community he entered. He built two huge companies, a mosque, hundreds of homes, and thousands of strong relationships. He used to tell me how he came to be where he was. He was only 20 years old when he decided to pursue his version of the American dream, leaving his home in India to become a civil engineer and a young entrepreneur. After graduating at the top of his class at Pune Engineering, he hopped on a plane to Chicago, without knowing anyone in the United States, determined to make a meaningful life for himself in a new country. Like homes, bridges, and nuclear power plants, my dad knew how to build strong relationships and make them last. He quickly found roommates and best friends at the Illinois Institute of Technology and integrated himself into a community where he would be influenced and respected for the next three decades. He became an assistant teacher and then got his first job at Sargent and Lundy as a civil engineer to support himself financially and pay anyone he had borrowed money from to fund his education in America. But he used to tell me that he always knew he could never be anyone’s employee. He started buying buildings, renting them out, and before he knew it, he was knee-deep in what would become a real estate empire that he would build in Chicago. He called it Polo Builders and it developed hundreds of homes across Chicagoland, including the homes where I spent my childhood. And

Hasan Merchant, top builder, is no more BY A STAFF WRITER CHAUMBURG, IL -- In a sudden and shocking turn of events, prominent Real Estate builder and developer, Hasan Merchant, passed away of a massive heart attack at a local Anjuman¬e¬Shujaee mosque on July 31. He had just finished leading a prayer meeting for the local Bohra community and collapsed as he was about to be served dinner. His wife Dr Sheher Bano Merchant and several other physicians who were at the event were not able to revive him despite their best efforts. Hasan Merchant who came into this country as a topper at the Pune Engineering College started his life in this country as an engineer at Sargeant and Lundy. But his dreams were more lofty as he visualized building homes and communities which would stand the test of times. Through his venture Polo Builders, Merchant went on to build single and multi-family homes allover Chicagoland and suburbs. Perhaps one of the very few builders who built a spectra of homes ranging from the $140000 to multi-million dollar homes and every segment in between, Polo’s homes reflected his vision of providing high quality in a budget people could afford.Over a period

of 10 years Polo communities grew in areas like Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, Lombard and Oakbrook, Lakewood, Carpentersville, Darien, Westmont and South Barrington. His clients living in these communities still vouch for the quality of these homes. Off late Merchant had floated his new venture American Real Estate group which was operating in the area of housing and commercial finance. Apart from his business ventures Hasan was a prominent philanthropist and supporter of community events of all kinds. He was one of the initial sponsors of big Bollywood shows in the community and

supported events which cut across religious, social and political affiliations. A devout progressive Muslim belonging to the Bohra faith, Hasan contributed immensely in building the landmark Anjuman-e-Saifee mosque in Hinsdale, IL which has become a hub for the Bohra community. When he passed away he was earnestly involved in setting up a second satellite center in the Schaumburg, IL. He was pronounced dead at the Northwest Community Hospital where he was rushed by the emergency staff. He was 55 and is survived by his wife and children Idris and Sarah and brother Khuzem and wife Yakuta Merchant in the US. He is also survived by his mother and an extended family in India. Several prominent members of the community have expressed their shock on his passing away. “I have so many memories of working together with him for years both in Chicago and in India. He was a dear friend to the whole community” said Iftekhar Shareef, Chairman of the FIA board and CEO of National Bankcard. “ We are shocked ... he was too young to go so soon” says Tara Swaminathan. A condolence meeting was held at the Schaumburg facility of the Bohra community.

KAMLESH BHUPTANI—a lodestar for stars

W

hat is common among Shilpa Shetty, Adnan Sami, Rajpal Yadav, Shreya Ghoshal and Archana Puran Singh? Well, all these talented artistes have performed in scintillating programs organized around the globe by renowned showman Kamlesh Bhuptani. Known among his countless Bollywood friends as ‘Chaku Bhai’, this 50-yearold impresario has conceptualized and executed some 2,000 smash-hit shows in various countries during his 110-odd tours all over the world. In the process, his premier production house, Classic Productions, has made stars out of several newcomers in the entertainment industry. Indeed, ever since he held his first successful show in South Africa in 1992, Bhuptani has never looked back. Presenting celebrities from theatre, television and films, he has won feathers in his cap by covering every genre of entertainment in the past 23 years—cruise show, qawwali, drama, dance, music, comedy and what have you. No wonder, the always-bright-and-bushy-tailed go-getter has bagged many awards for his services par excellence. Whether it is a n-nonsense convention of the Asian American Hotel Owners’ Association, a Navratri extravaganza, a star-studded drama or a cruise show, Bhuptani did his job with masterly finesse. The list of celebrities he has presented to the overseas community with flying colors surely turns his rivals green with envy. ‘Hi India’ had a chat with this compere beyond compare:

REAL AWARD COMES WHEN FANS THRONG MY SHOWS, SAYS CHAKU hi : Today you are one of the well-known brands in the US as a National promoter. How does it feel? KB: I feel like I am on Cloud 9. One feels happy and contented that years of hard work have finally paid off. Indians in the US have appreciated my shows and my stars on pedestal. What more one could ask for? But, you see, success has never gone to my bald head! (laughs) hi: What made you choose this field as a career?

What is the best form of entertainment today according to you? KB: Everyone enjoys live shows with popular artistes. I make it a point to add variety in my each show. The result is that the crowds get mesmerized when they see the popular performers in flesh and blood in front of them and keep asking for more. hi: How are your relations with celebrities? KB: All celebrities whom I provided a platform to

plaque as its recognition for participation in its annual convention & trade show in 2007. My real award comes when fans throng my shows. hi: What next in the US as a National Bollywood promoter? KB: In India, I launched Classic Productions in 1992 but in the US, it was set up in 2003. Ever since I organized first Navratri celebrity show in 2003, Bollywood stars have been taking US Indians

KB: I have been an extrovert. Since childhood, I liked to meet people, especially celebrities. I always wanted to be among them and witness the world of glamour. Being a go—getter, I knew I would make a great career in entertainment industry. hi: Since when are you working as a National Bollywood Promoter? When did you start your journey to entertainment? KB: After making countless friends and rubbing shoulders with everybody who was somebody in theatre, television and films, I set up my own company Classic Productions in 1992 in India and in 2003 in the US. hi: You were the first to innovate Navratri with celebrities. You have to your credit 19 cruise shows.

showcase their talent in their early days are still very friendly with me. And I keep in touch with them. I helped various celebrities debut under my Classic Productions as a stepping stone to their careers. hi: You have received several awards and recognitions, can you brief them for us? KB: I am lucky to win many awards. The Asian American Hotel Owners’ Association (AAHOA) gave me an award in 2008 for best contribution and excellence in service in the US. I also received award in 1998 for best performance in the comedy cadre in the US with Nina and Niitn Vyas. I was given a certificate of appreciation for being the best in promotions for Sandhya Cultural Programme in South Africa. AAHOA also gave a

by storm. Hence, I have vast opportunities as a promoter of entertainers. hi: How many countries you have travelled as a National Bollywood promoter? KB: Well, I have lost count. But I can say that I have held my shows all over the globe but mainly in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Portugal, South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, etc. hi: We see you have achieved a substantial goodwill in the US as a Bollywood promoter. What do you have say about it? KB: Good work always pays rich dividends.

NEW YORK: Ever wondered why you get more physically exhausted when certain issue keeps you worried and stressed out? Well, this could be because brain work accelerates the development of tiredness and also physical fatigue, says a new study by Indian-origin researchers. The study showed that when we attempt mental tasks and physical tasks at the same time, we activate specific areas, called prefrontal cortex (PFC), in our brain. This can cause our bodies to become fatigued much sooner than if we were solely participating in a physical task. Typically, endurance and fatigue have been examined solely from a

physical perspective, focused primarily on the body and muscles used to complete a specific task. However, the brain is just like any other biological tissue, it can be overused and can suffer from tension, anxiety and fatigue. “Not a lot of people see the value in looking at both the brain and the body together,” said Ranjana Mehta, assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health in the US. The researchers found that there were lower blood oxygen levels in the PFC following combined physical and mental fatigue compared to that of just physical fatigue conditions.

15 MINUTES A DAY OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

good for the elderly

Regular exercise makes older adults more physically fit, active and energetic IANS, LONDON

A

ny physical activity from a little morning walk to picking your grandchildren from the bus stop - during the week will help people above the age of 60 to live longer, a study has found. The health benefits of 150 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous physical activity are well known but older adults often find it difficult to reach this target. The fresh data showed that 75 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a week or 15 minutes a day was associated with health benefits in older adults, the team noted. “We believe that the target for physical activity in the current recommendations might be too

3D-printed ‘brain’ developed IANS, SYDNEY

I Dementia drugs causes weight loss NEW YORK: Common drugs used to treat dementia can result in harmful weight loss in the elderly, researchers have warned. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias affect one in six people aged over 80. The main drug treatments, a class of medications called cholinesterase inhibitors are marginally beneficial for most patients and may have serious side effects such as gastrointestinal symptoms. Weight loss also is a significant problem in dementia patients and linked to increased mortality. Data from randomized controlled trials suggests this weight loss may be an under-recognized side effect of cholinesterase inhibitors.

“Unintentional weight loss in older adults is associated with many adverse outcomes and poorer quality of life,” said lead study author Meera Sheffrin from University of California-San Francisco. “Our study provides evidence in a large, real-world population that cholinesterase inhibitors may contribute to clinically significant weight loss in a substantial proportion of older adults with dementia,” Sheffrin added. For the study, a total of 1,188 patients started on cholinesterase inhibitors were matched to 2,189 patients started on other medications. Nearly 29.3 percent of patients on the inhibitors experienced significant weight loss.

n a step closer to creating a fullfledged “bench-top” brain, Australian researchers have developed a 3D-printed layered structure incorporating neural cells that mimics the structure of brain tissue. A “bench-top” brain that accurately reflects actual brain tissue would be significant for researching not only the effect of drugs but brain disorders like schizophrenia and degenerative brain disease. “The breakthrough is significant in the quest to create a ‘bench-top’ brain that will enable important

insights into brain function, in addition to providing an experimental test bed for new drugs and electroceuticals,” said professor Gordon Wallace, director of ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science at University of Wollongong.

high for older adults or elderly and may also discourage some of them,” the researchers wrote. For new research, they scanned through relevant research databases for studies published up to February 2015 which assessed risk of death according to weekly physical activity for those aged 60 and above. Physical activity was measured in Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) minutes, which express the amount of energy (calories) expended per minute of physical activity. One MET is the energy equivalent expended by an individual while seated at rest. An activity with a MET value of five means you are expending five times the energy (number of calories) than you would at rest.

Yo-yo dieting not linked to higher cancer risk NEW YORK: Repeated loss and regain of weight due to dieting or what is also called yo-yo dieting may not put you at increased risk of contracting cancer, says a new study that could be the largest of its kind. Weight-cycling - loss and regain of body weight - is not associated with overall risk of cancer in men or women, the findings have showed. Weight-cycling is very common as those who try to lose weight often cannot retain their weight .

Academic stress ups injury risk in college players IANS, NEW YORK

C

ollege football players are more likely to experience injuries during test weeks when they have high academic stress than during training camp, says a new study. The effects of academic stress on injury occurrences are even more pronounced among starting players, the researchers found. “We know when there will be midterms or finals, and we can plan

for these academic stressors and accommodate practices accordingly to minimize the risk of injuries,” said one of the researchers Bryan Mann, assistant professor of physical therapy at University of Missouri in the US. “Everything players deal with on a daily basis creates, pressure, nervousness, stress and anxiety. They don’t have separate accounts to withdraw from for practice, school, colleges and relationships. Whenever there’s stress, something’s got to give.
