Election Commission has become B Modi’s ‘captive puppet’: Congress MUMBAI: Renowned Dangal actress Zaira Wasim has detailed a harrowing experience of being allegedly molested by a Zaira Wasim middle-aged man while she was on a flight from Delhi to Mumbai. The 17-year-old National Award winner shared her ordeal on a Vistara Airlines flight this week via Instagram.

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday accused the Election Commission of becoming a “captive puppet” in the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who it said was brazenly breaking rules in a final bid to save the BJP’s “sinking ship” in Gujarat. IS THE BJP NERVOUS ABOUT GUJARAT? known, is Gujarat’s somewhat unprepossessing Chief Minister. The communal undertone of the message is as clear as the distinction which a Union minister once made about the ongoing tussle in the country being between Ramzade or the children of the Hindu god, Ram, and Haramzade or children born out of wedlock. Modi has delved into history to project the Congress as one which has been consistently anti-Gujarat as its “failure” to make Vallabhbhai Patel and Morarji Desai prime ministers showed. He has gone even further back in time to recall Jawaharlal Nehru’s unwillingness to allow any official role in a secular state in the renovation of the Somnath temple to depict the first Prime Minister as anti-Hindu. There have been a few missteps on the Congress’s part as well with the well-known lawyer, Kapil Sibal, urging the Supreme Court to delay the judgement on the Ayodhya case until after the next general election, and former MP Mani Shankar Aiyar using the word, neech, or low-born, to describe Modi.

Assembly elections on Thursday saw over 68 per cent voting, the Election Commission said. Voting was held in 93 assembly constituencies across 14 districts in northern and central regions of the state.

Republicans strike tax deal

Leaders plan to hold an initial procedural vote on December 18, a final Senate vote on December 19 and then send the measure to the House for final passage IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Senate and House Republicans have struck an agreement on a sweeping tax-cut bill that, if passed, would be the first major piece of legislation signed by President Donald Trump, the media reported. Senate Republican leaders shared the details of the revamped bill with members of their conference this week and Speaker Paul Ryan updated his colleagues later in the day, reports The Hill magazine. “I’m confident we’ll pass the bill next week,” Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn, a member of the Senate-House negotiating conference, told reporters. Republican leaders plan to hold an initial procedural vote on December 18, a final Senate vote on December 19 and then send the measure to the House for final passage. Senate Majority Leader

Trump’s prominent aide to depart in Jan WASHINGTON: Omarosa Manigault Newman, one of US President Donald Trump’s most prominent African-American aide, is set to leave the White House in January 2018, according to the administration. The legislation will repeal the federal mandate requiring people to buy insurance.

Mitch McConnell heralded the development as something that would boost the middle class. “We want to take more money out of Washington’s pocket and put more money into the pockets of the middle class. I’m confident the conference committee will

finalize a bill that does just that,” he tweeted. Senate negotiators convinced their House counterparts to preserve two important middle-class tax breaks: the deduction on student loan interest and the exclusion for tuition waivers received by

graduate students, reports The Hill magazine. The bill would also cap the popular mortgage interest deduction at $750,000, a midpoint compromise between the Senate and House bills. Negotiators were still working on how many tax brackets to set, said congressional aides. Republican senators said they expected the final bill to tilt toward the seven brackets they passed in their version. Lawmakers were rushing to get the bill done before the Christmas holiday. The legislation will repeal the federal mandate requiring people to buy insurance — a core piece of ObamaCare. The bill also would give some relief to people in high-tax areas by allowing them to deduct up to $10,000 in state and local taxes. Meanwhile, a provision to set a corporate alternative minimum tax — which would have raised $40 billion over 10 years — has been stripped out.

Probe into Trump’s sexual misconduct WASHINGTON: A group of 59 Democratic Congresswomen have called on the US House of Representatives to launch a probe into accusations of sexual misconduct against President Donald Trump. In a letter to the chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Congresswomen said Americans deserved to know the truth about the allegations, which first surfaced during the 2016 presidential campaign, Efe news reported. Their request came a day after three of Trump’s accusers — Samantha Holvey, Jessica Leeds and Rachel Crooks — reiterated their accusations and demanded a Congressional probe. “At least 17 women have publicly accused the President of sexual misconduct,” the letter read, noting that one woman, Natasha Stoynoff, had recounted how the real-estate mogul and former reality-TV host “pushed her against a wall and forced his tongue down her throat”. Another woman, Kristin Anderson, accused Trump of groping her. —IANS

Republican Moore loses Senate race ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

Trump distances himself from Roy Moore’s election defeat

A

n extremist Republican accused of molesting teens lost the Senate election in Alabama, buoying the Democratic Party and delivering President Donald Trump a stinging blow that endangers his agenda. Roy Moore lost to Democrat Doug Jones by about 1.5 per cent in the traditionally staunch Republican state where Trump had won by a margin of 27 percent. The Democratic victory that followed party’s wins last month in governors’ races in Virginia and New Jersey, as well in several other contests across the nation, is a morale booster for the party reeling from Hillary Clinton’s loss to Trump a year ago. “We have shown the country the way that we can be unified,” declared a triumphant Jones, who carried the votes of minorities and women in a year of political polarization. The Republican defeat set the stage for soul-searching within the party of its strategies and politics and of the divisive style of Trump himself. Moore, a former state chief justice with conservative Christian religious pretensions, has been accused by nine women of molesting or assaulting them, one of them while she was 14 and another when she was 16. Most of the

allegations are from the 1970s. The allegations came as the nation is in the throes of dealing with sexual misconduct by men in power, whether in politics or in the media and entertainment. Two Democrats, Senator Al Franken and Representative John Conyers, who was the longest serving Congressman, have resigned in recent days after being accused of sexual misconduct. The allegations against Moore, especially those involving young girls, split the Republican Party, with several leaders demanding that he withdraw from the race. They included House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, the other Alabama Senator Richard Shelby and 13 other senators. Some of the leaders suggested having a write-in candidate for the party. WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has sought to distance himself from the defeat suffered by the controversial Republican candidate Judge Roy Moore in the Senate election in the US state of Alabama. The loss sustained by 70-year-old Moore, whose campaign was marred by allegations he preyed upon teenage girls several decades ago, shrinks the Republicans’ slim majority in the US upper house of Congress to 51-49. “The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election. ly organized, there were 1.7 per cent write in votes that cost him the election. Trump uncharacteristically conceded defeat and reached out to Jones. “Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory,” he tweeted minutes after the results became known. “The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win,” he added. “The people of Alabama are great.”

worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!” Trump tweeted on Wednesday, Efe news reported. Moore has refused to concede pending a tallying of overseas ballots, although Jones’ margin of victory is currently above the range of between 0 and 0.5 percentage points that would trigger an automatic recount. Moore won the Republican primary in Alabama in a surprise over Trump’s favored candidate, Luther Strange, who was appointed interim senator when Jeff Sessions stepped down in January — two years into his six-year term — to become Trump’s attorney general.

The vacancy arose when Jeff Sessions resigned the seat to become the Attorney General, confident his party would hold it. Trump had himself opposed Moore in the primary election in which party members selected the candidate for the main election. But the candidate backed by Trump, Luther Strange, who was appointed to temporarily fill the Senate vacancy, lost the primary in an early blow to the president.

Is the BJP nervous about Gujarat? Prima facie, it should be cakewalk for the BJP, not least because its principle opponent, the Congress, has been down in the dumps all these years. Nor is there any sign of a revival of its moribund organization Amulya Ganguli, NEW DELHI

N

ormally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shouldn’t have any worries about the election results in Gujarat. It is Narendra Modi’s home state and the party has been in power there for more than two decades. Prima facie, it should be cakewalk for the BJP, not least because its principle opponent, the Congress, has been down in the dumps all these years. Nor is there any sign of a revival of its moribund organization. Yet, the BJP doesn’t seem to be at ease. For one, its star — and, indeed, only effective — campaigner, the Prime Minister, has virtually parked himself in Gujarat, addressing a large number of meetings all over the state. As is obvious, it is unusual for a Prime Minister to spend so much time in a single state before an election, specially when the opponent is supposed to be weak. If he has nevertheless done so, it means that he is uncertain about the outcome. For another, the same sense of insecurity can be discerned in the increasing bitterness of his criticism of his primary challenger, Rahul Gandhi, comparing him with

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and his wife Anjali Rupani at a polling booth during the first phase of Gujarat election in Rajkot. (Photo: IANS)

Aurangzeb while referring to the tradition of dynastic succession in the Congress, while some others have gone a step further to liken him to Babar, the BJP’s bete noire from the time of the Ramjanmabhoomi agitation, and Allauddin Khilji, the party’s latest pet hate. Over the last two decades, the BJP has had so much of an easy

run in Gujarat and has apparently become so used to total dominance that the slightest sign of resistance tends to unnerve the party. And that, too, from someone whom the party — and its myriad trolls in the social media — have long been deriding as Pappu, signifying an adolescent, who was expected to fall on his face not

before long. But now that Rahul is proving to be a different person altogether who can give as good as he gets, the BJP is at a loss about how to respond. Not unexpectedly, therefore, it is flashing its old trump card, communalism, to boost its own morale and rally its supporters. Hence the posters about the battle being

between RAM — (Vijay) Rupani, Amit Shah and Modi — and HAJ — Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakor and Jignesh Mewani. Rupani, as is known, is Gujarat’s somewhat unprepossessing Chief Minister.

A

ll exit polls on Thursday predicted a clean sweep for the BJP in the Assembly elections held in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, in both of which it was virtually a direct fight between BJP and the Congress. While one channel gave a maximum of 135 seats to the BJP in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the lowest of 99-113 was given by another in the state which has been ruled by the party for the last 22 years. The ABP-CSDS Lokniti exit poll showed the BJP winning a maximum of 117 seats and Congress 64. The India Today-Axis poll predicted 99-113 seats for the BJP and 68-82 seats for the Congress. The Times Now and India TVVMR exit poll predicted the BJP will win 113 and the Congress 66. In the 2012 assembly elections, the BJP had won 115 seats and the Congress 61 while the others got six. The Republic-Jan Ki Baat survey put the number for the BJP at 108 and the Congress at 74. The predictions by NewsX-CNX placed the BJP on the top with 110-120 seats and the Congress between 65 and 75. The poll by News24-Chanakya predicted 135 for the BJP and 47

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday accused the Election Commission of becoming a “captive puppet” in the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who it said was brazenly breaking rules in a final bid to save the BJP’s “sinking ship” in Gujarat. The party denounced Modi’s “roadshow” after he voted in Ahmedabad on Thursday. This, it said, was a flagrant violation of the model code of

PM Modi commissions Scorpene submarine IANS, MUMBAI

H

eralding it as a significant new era to boost India’s defense and security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday commissioned the country’s first indigenously-built Scorpene-class submarine INS Kalvari into the Indian Navy. He formally unveiled the commissioning plaque and shook hands with naval officers, before taking a quick voyage in the submarine. It is named after the first Foxtort-class submarine — INS Kalvari — which was inducted into the Navy on December 8, 1967. This indigenous version comes days after the golden jubilee of the Navy’s submarine wing. This is the first conventional submarine to be inducted into the Indian Navy. Kalvari means Tiger Shark. The Scorpenes were being built by the Mazagaon Dockyard Ltd (MDL) here under Project 75 with transfer of technology from a foreign collaborator — DCNS of France. He said the INS Kalvari will provide a significant boost and synergize the country’s defense,

economic, technical and international powers, along with people power on the global arena. It will play a crucial role in India’s security and regional stability, he added. Modi said India was fully alert with regard to its global, strategic and economic interests in the Indian Ocean. “India’s humanitarian commitment to national security and diplomacy makes us stand apart in the world. So, a safe and secure India is good not just for this country but for entire humanity.” He said India was playing a crucial role in confronting “all challenges emanating from the high seas, be it terrorism, piracy, narcotics smuggling or illegal fishing” for the countries in the Indian Ocean rim. In her address, Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said submarines were “lethal, potent and cutting platforms in modern warfare, essential for peace and deterrence”.

Brexit bill: Govt loses key vote IANS, LONDON

T

he British government has been narrowly defeated in a key vote on its Brexit bill after a rebellion by 11 Tory MPs. In a blow to Prime Minister Theresa May, MPs voted to give Parliament a legal guarantee of a vote on the final Brexit deal struck with Brussels, BBC reported on Wednesday. The government had argued this would jeopardize its chances of delivering a smooth departure from the European Union (EU). Despite a last-minute attempt to offer concessions to rebels, an

amendment to the bill was backed by 309 to 305. Ministers said the “minor set-

back” would not prevent the UK leaving the EU in 2019. Of the Conservative MPs who voted against the government, eight are former ministers. One of them, Stephen Hammond, was sacked as Conservative vice chairman in the aftermath of the vote. The government said it was “disappointed” at losing — its first defeat on Brexit — despite the “strong assurances” it had offered. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the defeat was “a humiliating loss of authority” for Prime Minister May on the eve of an EU summit where leaders will discuss Brexit.

If Gurbir S. Grewal’s nomination by Democrat Governor-elect Phil Murphy is approved by the State Senate early next year, he will be the first Sikh to assume the top state law enforcement position in the United States and the second Indian-American, after Kamala Harris, who held the position in California before her election to the US Senate. ADELAIDE: A 15-year-old female footballer from Delhi, who had gone to take part in the unrecognized Pacific School Games in Australia, died after being drowned at the Glenelg Beach in Adelaide today, a top official of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) said. The school girl, Nitisha Negi, was one of the five Indian footballers who were swept away by a huge wave on Sunday when they ventured into the seawaters after the completion of the Games. The 15-year-old was with four other girls at Holdfast Marina at Glenelg when the incident occurred, the Guardian reported this week. Lifesavers were able to rescue the others but were unable to find the Indian girl until Monday morning when her body was pulled out of the water. One girl was said to be in critical condition. The Indian High Commission was providing support to the group, who were all involved in the sporting event. Bhai Boolchand, the unsung Indian in Ghana FRANCIS KOKUTSE, ACCRA

N

ot much is known about him, but it has now emerged that trade relations between Ghana and India were started by Bhai Boolchand, the first Indian to arrive in the Gold Coast — Ghana’s colonial name — in 1890. That’s some 67 years before the British colonial government granted the country independence, research by the Indian Association of Ghana has found. “As far as our records show, Bhai Boolchand (of the Bhaiband Sindhworki trading community), landed on the shores of the Gold Coast in

western Africa in 1890. Nearly twenty years later, in 1919, the first Sindhi company was established by two brothers — Tarachand Jasoomal Daswani and Metharam

Jasoomal Daswani,” the Indian Association said. The duo opened a store — Metharam Jassomal Brothers — in the then capital city of Cape Coast

in 1919. “Their business flourished and branches were opened in Accra and Kumasi. A few years later, the two brothers separated. Whilst Bhai Metharam Jasoomal continued the business as Metharam Brothers, Tarachand Jasoomal operated his business as Bombay Bazaar. These were the first two Indian companies that were established in the Gold Coast,” the Association said. Boolchand’s arrival, therefore, pre-dates the historical links between the two countries that were thought to have started between Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkruman, and India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

While Sindhu defeated He Bingjiao 21-11, 16-21, 21-18 in an hour and four minutes in her Group A opener, Srikanth fell against Danish world champion Viktor Axelsen, who took only 38 minutes to register a 21-13, 21-17 win in Group B. Three-time World Championships medallist Sindhu will meet Sayaka Sato of Japan.

MOHALI: India skipper Rohit Sharma (208 not out), who piloted India to a mammoth 392 against Sri Lanka, became the first cricketer to score three double hundred in the One-Day International (ODI). At the PCA Stadium here, Sharma belted an unbeaten 153ball 208, comprising 13 fours and 12 sixes. It was his sixth score of more than 100 in ODIs this year, tying

115 balls by the end of the 40th over and then went on to thump 107 more off his final 37 balls. He got to the landmark in 151 balls when he stole two runs after nudging a full length delivery off his counterpart Thisara Perera in the final over of the innings. In reply, the islanders lost the openers Upul Tharanga (7) and Danushka Gunathilaka (16) within

with Virat Kohli (also this year) and Sachin Tendulkar (1996). The latter, though, holds the record of maximum nine centuries by an Indian in 1998. Rohit was engaged in two big partnerships — 115 runs for the opening wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (68 off 67; 9x4) and then 213 for the second wicket with rookie Shreyas Iyer (88 off 70; 4x9, 2x6).

the first powerplay even as Lahiru Thirimanne’s (21) poor run with the willow continued. While Tharanga and Gunathilaka fell to Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah respectively, Thirimanne’s attempt to reverse-sweep a flat delivery angling into middle, was enough for debutant off-spinner Washington Sundar to claim his maiden ODI scalp.

Pawar slams BJP’s charges against Manmohan Singh Veteran politician and Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar celebrated his 77th birthday with a rally IANS, NAGPUR

V

eteran politician and Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar, who hit the streets on his 77th birthday this week to lead a rally, said the ruling “BJP should feel ashamed of itself” for hurling allegations of Pakistani links against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Addressing a massive rally this week after leading a massive ‘Jan Aakrosh Halla Bol’ procession, jointly with Congress and other parties against the BJP-Shiv Sena government, he said: “Manmohan Singh’s credential are impeccable and it was very wrong to accuse him of seeking Pakistan’s help to win the ongoing assembly elections in Gujarat.” “Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has taken power, it has destroyed the country, it is indulging in extremely dirty politics and it has invoked Pakistan merely to cling to power. It is a very sad development,” Pawar said. The Modi government has completed more than three years in power, but the farmers issues remained unresolved and their problems are being ignored, compelling them to commit suicide, he

added. Pawar — who led a political procession after 37 years, said when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was informed of the procession, he responded that he “would show them their place when they came to him”.

“The CM has threatened us. He has complete authority to govern the state, but if he threatens to throw us in jail, the farmers of the state are powerful enough to uproot you from power,” Pawar warned. He pointed out that the agita-

tion was intended to “awaken the sleeping government to the misery of the farmers” who have been denied justice on various counts, including the Minimum Support Price for farm produce, implementation of the farm loans waiver scheme announced in June and other related issues. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena government hit back at the opposition with the Anti-Corruption Bureau lodging FIRs in four different cases pertaining to the alleged scams worth Rs 72,000 crore in the state irrigation department, which could implicate several senior NCP leaders, including former Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and ex-minister Sunil Tatkare. The procession, signaling a realignment of the political opposition, was led by an ailing Pawar who recently underwent a toe surgery, but he appeared fit, cheerful and in full form. Joined by an estimated 200,000 farmers and party activists from entire Vidarbha region of eastern Maharasthra, the procession started from Dhanwate National College grounds and slowly wended its way to the Maharashtra Legislature which has currently assembled here for the Winter Session in the state’s second capital.

Muslim Law board to discuss triple talaq HYDERABAD: The proposed legislation on triple talaq and Babri Masjid will be among the key issues to be discussed at the general body meeting of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) scheduled to be held here in February. The three-day meeting will be crucial in the wake of the recent developments on Babri Masjid issue and the proposed move by the Central government to make triple talaq a cognizable offense. The apex body of Indian Muslims is expected to take key decisions, especially on triple talaq. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 is expected to be tabled during Parliament’s winter session starting Friday. The bill reportedly provides for three year sentence for a husband pronouncing ‘talaq’ thrice in one sitting and will give women the right to seek maintenance. If the bill is passed in the winter session and enacted by February, the board will chalk out an action plan to oppose the legislation, sources said. —IANS

BJP to blame for unrest in Rs 1,843 cr for Ockhi damage sought coastal Karnataka: Minister IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

BENGALURU: In the wake of BJP protests over the death of a young man, Karnataka Home Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy has blamed the opposition party for disturbing peace in the coastal region of the southern state. “The BJP’s state leaders are trying to provoke violence in the coastal towns (Kumta, Honnavar and Sirsi) on instructions from party President Amit Shah,” Reddy told reporters here following protest rallies in the region over the death of an 18-year-old youth last week. “As assembly elections in Karnataka are due in early 2018, the BJP is fomenting trouble to polarize people and play vote-bank politics. We will not allow them to succeed and deal firmly with trouble-makers,” Reddy said. Defying ban orders and breaking barricades, about 600 Bharatiya

erala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on December 13 that his government has sought Rs 1,843 crore from the Centre to mitigate the damage caused by Cyclone Ockhi. “This was one of the worst disasters that struck the state. The Centre has been very supportive in all aspects,” Vijayan told the media soon after chairing the weekly cabinet meeting. “In today’s meeting it was decided that we will seek Rs 1,843 crore from the Centre. Very soon a central team will be arriving in the state to assess the damage.” Vijayan, however, did not give a clear picture on the exact number of dead and missing. “Even now bodies are being recovered. Traumatic brain injury can lead to gut dysfunction NEW YORK: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause gut dysfunction, which then has the potential to worsen the original brain injury, says a study. “These results indicate strong twoway interactions between the brain and the gut that may help explain the increased incidence of systemic infections after brain trauma and allow new treatment approaches,” said lead researcher Alan Faden, Professor at University of Maryland School of Medicine in the US. People are 12 times more likely to die from blood poisoning after traumatic brain injury and 2.5 times more likely to die of a digestive system problem, compared with those without such injury. The study, published in the journal Brain, Behaviors and Immunity, could

partly explain why it is so. The researchers examined mice that received an experimental traumatic brain injury and found that the intestinal wall of the colon became more permeable after trauma. It is not clear how TBI causes gut changes but researchers believe that a key factor in the process may be enteric glial cells (EGCs), a class of cells that exist in the gut.

The findings, published in the journal Kidney International, are significant because urea levels can be lowered through medication, diet — for example, by eating less protein — and other means, thereby allowing for improved treatment and possible prevention of diabetes, the researchers said. For the study, the team evaluated the records of 1.3 million adults without diabetes over a five-year period, beginning in 2003. Out of these, 117,000 of those without diabetes — or nine percent — had elevated urea levels, signalling poor kidney function and were at 23 percent higher risk of developing diabetes.

Drug to prevent loss of muscle function NEW YORK: Researchers have found a new drug that reduces fibrosis (scarring) and prevents loss of muscle function in an animal model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The researchers from Saint Louis University (SLU) in the US, in a paper published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports, said this could provide a promising approach in designing new medications for those suffering from DMD. DMD is a fatal form of a muscle wasting disorder caused by mutations in a gene on the X chromosome. With treatment, those with DMD have an average lifespan of around 25 years. Boys with the illness typically need to use a wheelchair by age 12 and require mechanical ventilation to help with breathing. T

he toxic build-up of urea, a compound created by the liver in the brain has been found as the major reason that can cause brain damage and lead to Huntington’s Disease, one of seven major types of age-related dementia, finds a study. The study found that urea level peaks in the brain even before dementia sets in. The discovery could one day help doctors diagnose and even treat dementia, well in advance of its onset. “This study on Huntington’s Disease is the final piece of the jigsaw which leads us to conclude that high brain urea plays a pivotal role in dementia,” said Garth Cooper, Professor at The University of Manchester. Cooper’s previous study revealed that urea is similarly linked to

Alzheimer’s, suggesting that the toxic build-up of urea could be relevant to all types of age-related dementias. “Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s are at opposite ends of the dementia spectrum — so if this holds true for these types, then I believe it is highly likely it will hold true for all the major age-related dementias,”

Cooper said, in the paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Dementia results in a progressive and irreversible loss of nerve cells and brain functioning, causing loss of memory and cognitive impairments affecting the ability to learn. Currently, there is no cure.

Nicotine patch safer for pregnant women than smoking SYDNEY: While nicotine may not be completely safe for a pregnant mother’s foetus, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is safer than smoking for women who are not able to quit on their own, says a new study. Researchers suggest that the study, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, should give doctors the confidence about the safety of NRT, a medically-approved way to ingest nicotine

to help quit smoking. The therapy includes the adhesive patch, chewing gum, lozenges, nose spray, or inhaler. “Smoking during pregnancy is the most significant, preventable risk factor for poor maternal and infant health outcomes,” according to Yael Bar-Zeev, Head of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) Centre for Smoking Cessation and Prevention in Israel. “Clinicians worldwide, including in

the United States, report that they prescribe NRT at low levels due to lack of confidence and safety concerns. However, behavioral counselling combined with medication is the most effective smoking cessation strategy,” Bar-Zeev said. Predominant guidelines worldwide recommend NRT for pregnant women who have been unable to quit smoking without medication.

Raveena finds films best way to educate kids

A

ctress Raveena Tandon believes films can be a learning experience for children. Raveena, who was present at the inauguration of the third edition of Smile International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFFCY) this week, said, “It is something that is to be very proud of that there is a film festival, that is only and wholly for children. I want kids to take a vow that whatever they will learn from here, they will follow in their daily life. “Movies are the best media to educate our children, so I also want to thank SIFFCY which has acted as a media to communicate goodness to our children as it is the right time to educate them about what is good and what is bad for them.”

Women are taking over the world: Big B

M

egastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is busy shooting for Thugs of Hindostan has said that it is admirable to see women taking over the world. He recently wrote that serenity is not just in the woods and the skies above, but on the work place as well. “A serenity of a different kind that exudes diligence and sincerity, speed of compliance, organizing mastery, orderly management and professional diligence. And it all comes from the ladies working on set. An entire bunch of them, running about fulfilling commands and organizing production needs.”

“There are insecurities as well as comparisons and I feel there is a shoe to fill. I also believe striking the right tone with readers about my failures, insecurities and the learning step that come across, but at the same time, not being too hard on myself, was most difficult thing for me.”

Historical roles suit Deepika: Madhuri

B

ollywood beauty Madhuri Dixit feels that among the current crop of actors, Deepika Padukone — who will next be seen in the controversial period drama Padmavati — has an aura best suited for historical characters. Madhuri was at the red carpet of the Lux Golden Rose Awards this week when she was asked about the actor she finds the most beautiful. She said: “I have always felt that beauty comes from within and all Indian actors are beautiful. I can’t take one name because we have Deepika, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt — there are beautiful women on screen.”

‘Fukrey Returns’: Quite an entertaining deja vu

S

equels are expected to be bigger, better and ideally build on everything that made the original successful. On paper, Fukrey Returns boasts of everything one expects from a sequel, except the novelty factor which actually made its predecessor popular. Fukrey Returns continues the saga from its original Fukrey released in 2013. Life is like usual for the quartet, Choocha dreams of romancing the local don of vices Bholi Punjaban (Richa Chadha) and yet tries to date other girls with the help of his closest pal, Hunny (Pulkit Samrat). Student suspended for anti-Muslim remark BY A STAFF WRITER ANSAS CITY, MO – A high school senior in Missouri, Alex Lonsdale, served a two-day inschool suspension for allegedly calling a fellow Muslim student, a terrorist. Lonsdale and Faraz Pervaiz got into a debate about the nature of Islam after Lonsdale told The College Fix that he had based his claims off of polls conducted by ICM Research for the 2016 Channel 4 documentary about pro-terrorist sentiment among British Muslims. However, the friendly debate turned into an argument when Pervaiz asked Lonsdale “why are you making my religion out to be like that?” . Both students have had experience debating policy issues in the school’s debate club: Lonsdale and his debate partner shared

K

a semifinal placement at the Grain Valley High School New Year Novice Kickoff this year, while Pervaiz and his partner tied for first in policy debate at a high school tournament in December 2016 The school’s debate team currently ranks second in the nation by the National Debate & Speech Association, where Liberty High School competes annually during its national competition. According to the College Fix, Lonsdale

was called into the principal’s office three days later and was asked to explain the statements that Pervaiz said he had made including that “all Muslims are terrorists.” School officials accused Lonsdale of “creating an emotionally unsafe zone” and told him that his behavior could be considered “harassing” or “hounding” and that he should be conscious of “social cues.” After school officials interviewed three other student witnesses, Lonsdale was assigned to serve an in-school suspension the rest of the day and the following day however, he was still allowed to attend some of his Advanced Placement classes. After the incident, Lonsdale applied to the Missouri University of Science and Technology, and has been accepted regardless of his actions. He plans to study engineering or physics and will abstain from further spirited debates about religion.

Mashkoor Choudhry BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Loyola Stritch School of Medicine has named Mashkoor Choudhry the school’s Senior Scientist of the Year. Choudhry serves as a professor in the surgery department. Assistant professor Fancis Alonzo was named Junior Scientist of the Year. The awards are based on scholarly productivity, service to the institution and community, professional society activities, research funding, mentoring and peer-review activities for scientific journals and external sponsors of research funding, the university said in a news release. The Indian American professor is director of the Alcohol Research Program at Loyola, and has studied the role of alcohol in post-burn complications for more than 20 years. Many burns and trauma victims have alcohol in their bloodstream, making this research vital in improving treatment. In his lab, Choudhry and his team are studying the hypothesis that being exposed to alcohol increases the suppression of the immune system of the intestines and breaks down their natural barriers, resulting in harmful gut bacteria going outside of the intestines and causing sepsis and multi-organ failure.

All Chicago cops now have body cameras

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Chicago Police Department says all patrol officers are now equipped with body cameras. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said on December 10 the city reached its goal to provide the cameras to more than 7,000 officers one year earlier than originally planned. They say it’s the largest deployment of the technology in the US. Emanuel says the cameras are “an essential tool” in the city’s efforts to rebuild trust between police and the community. He says they improve transparency and help in investigations and resolving disputes. The US Justice Department in January issued a scathing report on civil rights abuses by the Chicago’s police over the years. An investigation began in 2015 after the release of dash cam video showing an officer shooting black teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times.

The announcement made last month recognizes the physician in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance for better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world, according to the Rotary Foundation certificate. In recognition of his charitable and philanthropic work, Rotary International recognized Patel with the Paul Harris Fellowship which includes a citation, medallion and lapel pin. Mother who trashed infant gets 12 years BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Nausheen Rahman, an Indian American mother who had confessed to throwing her newborn baby in the trash shortly after she delivered at home, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on December 11 in New York State Supreme Court. Before she was sentenced, Rahman, who is unmarried, read out a lengthy plea in which she asked New York state Supreme Court Judge Mario Mattei to go easy on her, claiming that her actions were a result of her orthodox Muslim upbringing which looks poorly on unwed mothers. “When I became pregnant, I was terrified of the response of my father and the cultural backlash that I knew I would experience, so I hid my pregnancy out of fear, fearing condemnation and estrangement from the family,” said Rahman in her statement in court, attempting to convey to Mattei that she took full responsibility for her actions. Rahman has been in custody since March 12, 2016, when she was arrested after the police found a newborn baby wrapped in a black garbage bag in a trash bin outside

the family home. The infant was found in the fetal position, sucking on his thumb. The father of the baby has not been criminally charged, indicating there was not sufficient evidence to show that he had assisted in any way in the plan to dispose of the baby.

Rahman has already served almost 22 months of her 12-year sentence. She would have to serve 6/7ths of her sentence–10 years–before becoming eligible for parole; therefore, she could be out of prison in about eight years. The attorney noted that his client has no prior criminal record.

101 held in 5-day NJ crackdown BY A STAFF WRITER EWARK, NJ -- Immigration enforcement agents swept into 14 counties in New Jersey last week to arrest 101 people, 88 percent of whom officials said were guilty of crimes in the past that included child sex crimes, drug offenses and immigration violations, but also trespassing and shoplifting. Members of the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) division, which is part of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, led the five-day operation during which dozens of people aged 20 to 71 were arrested. Of the 101 arrests, three were in Monmouth County. The latest wave of arrests in New Jersey is part of the US Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to ramp up administrative arrests of people who lack valid immigration papers.

Akayed Ullah BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- The Port Authority bomber accused of detonating a crude bomb had posted a taunting message to President Trump in the hours before the attack. “Trump you failed to protect your nation,” Akayed Ullah, 27, wrote on Facebook early on December 11. Investigators scouring Ullah’s Brooklyn home turned up a passport in his name with multiple handwritten notes, including “O AMERICA, DIE IN YOUR RAGE,” the complaint said on December 12. The investigators also found metal pipes, Christmas light fragments and screws that matched the items used in the crudelyconstructed bomb found at the scene. Federal prosecutors charged Ullah with a total of five counts, including providing material support to a terrorist group and use of weapons of mass destruction. Ullah, a former livery cab driver from Bangladesh, is accused of detonating a crude pipe bomb strapped to his chest while walking through a Port Authority tunnel on December 11 morning. Ullah was severely injured in the 7:20 am blast, but the bomb failed to detonate fully. Three others suffered minor injuries in the rush-hour attack that triggered panic and chaos in the tunnel linking Times Square to Port Authority. Ullah, who is recovering from burns and cuts to his hands and stomach at Bellevue Hospital, is likely to be arraigned soon.

John Tsoukaris, field office director of the ERO division in Newark, said in a statement released on December 12: “As part of this operation, we continue focus on the arrest of individuals who are criminal and are a threat to public safety. There are now 101 fewer criminals in our communities.” Hudson County, which is home to Jersey

City, the second-biggest city in the Garden State, recorded 15 arrests. Essex County, where Newark, or Jersey’s biggest city is located, was close behind, with 14 arrests. Essex County was trailed by Middlesex and Camden counties, at 11 arrests each, and then Passaic County, at nine arrests. Seven people were arrested in Burlington County, six each from Bergen, Mercer and Union counties, four in Somerset, three in Cumberland, two in Atlantic and one in Morris. Immigration officials pointed out notable arrests that included a Mexican national convicted of sexually assaulting a minor, a Turkish citizen guilty of possessing child pornography, a Peruvian citizen convicted of recording a sexual act without consent, an Egyptian citizen convicted of possessing heroin and a Korean national found guilty of distributing cocaine.

Amarjit Kaur BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY – The police in Queens, N.Y., are searching for a missing Indian American woman, Amarjit Kaur, a pregnant mother of twin 7-year-old boys and who is expecting another. Amarjit Kaur, 34, has gone missing since December 5 following a trip to the bank. According to Kaur’s husband, Lakhwinder Multani, his wife left home on 128th Street to a nearby Chase Bank around 10:30 am on December 5. After depositing a check at the bank, she never made it back to the car. Her phone was inside the car parked at 114th Street and Liberty Avenue. A surveillance video shared by investigators shows her walking on the sidewalk alone a short time before she disappeared. Kaur is described as 5-foot-4, 195 pounds with a medium build. She was last seen wearing a black, long-sleeved shirt and yellow pants. Anyone with information of Kaur’s whereabouts is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-8477.

Sunitha Guntipally gets 4 years for visa fraud BY A STAFF WRITER REMONT, CA -- Indian American Sunitha Guntipally of Fremont has been sentenced to over four years in prison for role in H-1B visa fraud conspiracy, mail fraud, witness tampering, and related crimes. Sunitha, along with her husband Venkat Guntipally, founded DS Soft Tech and Equinett, two employment-staffing companies for technology firms. According to the Department of Justice, a federal grand jury indicted Sunitha, 44, of Fremont, and three co-defendants, Venkat Guntipally, 49, of Fremont; Pratap “Bob” Kondamoori, 56, of Incline Village, Nev.; and Sandhya Ramireddi, 58, of Pleasanton, in 33-counts on May 5, 2016. Sunitha admitted that between 2010 and 2014, they falsely submitted more than one hundred fraudulent H-1B petitions in

F

the name of several companies, which either did not exist or never had requirement for H-1B workers, thus creating a pool of H-1B beneficiaries who then could be placed at legitimate employment positions in the Northern District of California and elsewhere. According to the indictment, Kondamoori responded to federal law enforcement officers investigating the visa fraud conspiracy with various false representations. Kondamoori allegedly represented that,

among other things, he and SemSolar were developing a product called “Eftia Master. Scribe” for which he required H-1B workers; that Softbank, Sprint’s parent company, was both an investor in SemSolar and a business partner of SISL Networks; and that Kondamoori was a general partner of Focus Ventures. According to the indictment, all of those representations were false. Kondamoori is charged with one count of obstruction of justice. Ramireddi also is alleged to have advised an H-1B worker to mislead a government agent for the purpose of hindering, delaying, or preventing the government investigation. The judge had sentenced Ramireddi to 14 months’ imprisonment and Kondamoori to 20 months’ imprisonment for their respective roles earlier this year. Venkat is scheduled to be sentenced on March 21, 2018.

Bangladeshi saved from deportation BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY -- A Bangladeshi father living undocumented in the US for 37 years was ordered deported on November 20, but received an eleventh-hour reprieve from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in New York. Riaz Talukder, who lives in Queens, New York, arrived at ICE offices on November 20, with his passport and a plane ticket, expecting to be deported that day. He said goodbye to his wife Syeda–who is battling cancer – and his two teenage sons, Rafi and Radi. But Talukder got a surprise from ICE officials. A petition created by United We Dream, along with support from Desis Rising Up and Moving --an Indian American and South Asian activists group– and television coverage of his case by NY1, garnered support by politicians and community activists for the 50-year-old man who was brought to the US when he was 13 by his uncle. An ICE official granted Talukder six months to again present his case for asylum and on humanitarian grounds because of his wife’s illness. With the new order, Talukder will not

have to check in with ICE until May of 2018. His attorneys, however, will have to check in every month, according to NY1 news, which Talukder credits with saving him from deportation. Kazi Fouzia of DRUM told that at

least 400 Bangladeshis in the area have been deported in the past year. The news site reported that Trump’s first 100 days in office saw more than 41,000 arrests of undocumented immigrants, a 37.6 percent increase over the same period last year.

3 plead guilty to hand in paralysing internet

Paras Jha BY A STAFF WRITER NCHORAGE, AK -- Three men, including an Indian American, pleaded guilty to creating a ‘botnet’ known as Mirai that was used to paralyze chunks of the internet in 2016. Paras Jha, Josiah White and Dalton Norman admitted to one count of conspiracy in plea agreements filed earlier this month. Federal prosecutors in Alaska and New Jersey said on December 13 that the trio created a collection of hundreds of thousands of computers and internet-connected devices-including routers, webcams and other devices--infected with malware that they controlled. A broad ‘denial-of-service’ attack waged using the Mirai botnet knocked services such as Twitter and Netflix offline in October 2016. Prosecutors said they don’t believe the three men were responsible for that attack, as Jha had already posted the code for Mirai to online criminal forums. Jha, 21, of Fanwood, New Jersey, and Norman, 21, of Metairie, Louisiana, also pleaded guilty to a separate conspiracy charge for using another powerful botnet for a ‘clickfraud’ scheme, used to artificially generate advertising revenue by making it appear that a real user clicked on an online ad. Jha, a former Rutgers University computer science student, also pleaded guilty on December 13 in a New Jersey federal court to a computer fraud charge for allegedly executing a series of attacks from 2014 through 2016 that paralyzed the university’s networks. Bill Walton, a special agent who oversees the Anchorage FBI’s Cyber Crime unit, said the botnet’s name is a reference to a Japanese anime called Mirai Nikki, which loosely translated into English means “future diary.”

US scientists correct DNA in human embryos NEW YORK: In a first in the US, scientists using the 'CRISPR' genomeediting technique, have successfully corrected the DNA in human embryos that carried inherited diseases. The effort to create genetically modified human embryos was carried out by Shoukhrat Mitalipov from the Oregon Health and Science University and involved changing the DNA of

a large number of one-cell embryos, MIT Technology Review reported. "So far as I know, this will be the first study reported in the US," said Jun Wu, a collaborator at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, who played a role in the project. Mitalipov declined to comment on the results which, he said, are pending publication.

Bad air to cause more deaths

In the process termed "germline engineering", the scientists demonstrated that it is possible to safely and efficiently eradicate or correct defective genes that cause inherited diseases like the blood condition betathalassemia. As a result, any genetically modified child would then pass the changes on to subsequent generations via their own germ cells-the egg and sperm. Until now, three previous reports of editing human embryos were published in China. The earlier Chinese publications, although limited in scope, found 'CRISPR' caused editing errors and that the desired DNA changes were taken up not by all the cells.

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. For the study which appeared in the journal Nature Climate Change, the team used an ensemble of several global climate models to determine the number of premature deaths that would occur due to ozone and particulate matter in 2030 and 2100. For each model, the team assessed the projected changes in groundlevel air pollution that could be attributed to future climate change. They then overlaid these changes spatially on the global population, accounting for both population growth and expected changes in susceptibility to air pollution. Five out of eight models predicted there will be more premature deaths in 2030, and seven of nine models in 2100.

NEW YORK: Researchers have developed a new drug that may limit the progression of Parkinson’s disease while providing better symptom relief to people with the disease. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are commonly managed using selective dopamine receptor agonists. While these drugs are useful in early-stage Parkinson’s, they tend to lose efficacy in later disease stages. In this study, the researchers employed a preclinical model of Parkinson’s disease to compare the effects of the dopamine agonist ropinirole to their new experimental drug, known as D-512. —IANS

Research suggests malaria Rising CO2 to affect 53 mn Indians treatment via homeopathy IANS, NEW YORK

MUMBAI: Homeopathy has shown the ability to treat malaria and vitiligo in lab models, says new research by Mumbai’s BMC-run BYL Nair Charitable Hospital and leading homoeopath Rajesh Shah. Shah, founder of Life Force Homeopathy, said the findings have been published in two reputed international peer-reviewed journals recently — the International Journal of Medical & Health Research and The European Journal of Pharmaceutical & Medical Research. He said that in lab experiments in BYL Nair Hospital, one of the oldest Chinese homoepathic medicines, China Officinalis, and one of the latest homoeopathic medicines, Plasmodia Falciparum Nosode, were evaluated for inhibition of hemozoin, indicating

T

their efficacy against malaria. “This path-breaking research has supported several fundamental principles of homoeopathy and opens windows to more scientific research in treating many dreaded diseases, like malaria and other infections,” Shah, who initiated these projects, told IANS. In the second experiment with Dr Renuka Munshi, homoeopathic medicines showed effectiveness against vitiligo, a dreaded skin disease.

he problem of protein deficiency is known to be widespread in India, and if carbon dioxide (CO2) levels continue to rise as projected, it may put an estimated 53 million people at new risk of consuming less than adequate dietary protein, a Harvard University study says. The findings published online in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, showed that humancaused carbon dioxide emissions lower the nutritional value of staple crops, increasing the risk for dietary deficiencies among the world's most vulnerable people. The populations of 18 countries may lose more than five per cent of their dietary protein by 2050 due to a decline in the nutritional value of rice, wheat, and other staple crops, according to the study.

India may lose 5.3% protein from standard diet as a result of rise in CO2 emissions.

The researchers found that India may lose 5.3 per cent of protein from a standard diet as a result of rise in CO2 emissions. "This study highlights the need for countries that are most at risk to actively monitor their populations' nutritional sufficiency, and,

more fundamentally, the need for countries to curb human-caused CO2 emissions," said Samuel Myers of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Globally, 76 per cent of the population derives most of their daily protein from plants.
