A disbarred lawyer, who is going to prison in May to serve a three-year sentence for crimes that included previously lying to Congress, being called to testify was a measure of the extreme polarization overshadowing the nation. The Democrats treated Cohen like a hero and he played up to them by expressing remorse for his years as Trump’s fixer and declaring: “Today, I am here to tell the truth about Mr Trump... He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat.” The Republicans harped on Cohen’s criminal conviction, saying that he was motivated by hopes of leniency and disappointment at not getting a White House job. Trump tweeted from Vietnam: “He had other clients also. He was just disbarred by the

State Supreme Court for lying and fraud. He did bad things unrelated to Trump. He is lying in order to reduce his prison time.” Cohen said that Trump knew in advance about WikiLeaks releasing hacked confidential Democratic Party’s and Hillary Clinton’s emails, which became a source of embarrassment to the party leadership and of discord with the organization’s ranks, because he heard a campaign adviser tell Trump about it. Assange, however, issued a statement denying that he had ever spoken to the advisor, Roger Stone, who has been arrested and charged with witness tampering and other crimes in connection with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

NEW YORK: A 70-year-old man of Indian-descent, who pretended to be a US government official, has admitted to running a multi-million-dollar immigration fraud that duped over 100 people, said federal prosecutors. Hardev Panesar admitted to the crimes in the San Diego Federal Court last week and agreed to pay back $2.5 million to the victims, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Over a five-year period, he told numerous victims that he was an official of the Department of Homeland Security and that he and his associates could get them and their families legal immigration status, according to the DOJ. Just before his trial was to begin, Panesar jumped bail and fled to Mexico last June and hid there till he was caught by Mexican authorities who deported him to the US in August, the DOJ said. —IANS

White House moves forward with wall funding despite lawsuits Sixteen states file a lawsuit challenging Trump’s authority to divert federal funds to build a border wall by declaring a national emergency IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he White House is moving forward with plans to shift existing federal funds to pay for construction of a wall on the southern border, a senior administration official said. In the face of several lawsuits challenging US President Donald Trump’s authority to declare a national emergency to reallocate billions of dollars toward a border wall, the White House plans to first draw from the Defense Department’s drug interdiction program and the Treasury Department’s asset forfeiture funds before moving to divert military construction funds, the official said. Unlike the first two pots of money, the latter can only be accessed through a national emergency declaration, which is now the focus of several lawsuits, reports CNN. While the administration has not yet been enjoined from accessing those funds, the White House is bracing for the possibility that a federal court could issue an injunction on accessing the military construction funds as a result of the lawsuits. immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment. Sixteen states on Monday filed a lawsuit challenging Trump’s authority to divert federal funds to build a border wall by declaring a national emergency. It is one of the several lawsuits challenging Trump’s emergency declaration. While past presidents have declared national emergencies, they have largely been over noncontroversial issues and not as a result of Congress rejecting the President’s request for specific

Cohen granted two-month delay to report to jail WASHINGTON: Michael Cohen, US President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer, on Wednesday was granted a two-month delay to surrender himself to federal prison. Federal Judge William Pauley has approved Cohen’s request to adjourn his surrender to prison from March 6 to May 6, a court document revealed. Cohen recently had “a serious surgical procedure” and needs more time for recovery, according to his lawyer Michael Monico, reports Xinhua news agency. Earlier, House Intelligence Committee postponed Cohen’s closeddoor testimony until February 28. The Senate Intelligence Committee has also subpoenaed Cohen for an appearance in a closed door session. Cohen pleaded guilty last year to charges that included campaignfinance violations for paying hush money to women who claimed to

funds. Trump early this week told reporters he believes he is on solid legal footing as he responded to news of the lawsuits being filed. “I think we’ll do very well. We have an absolute right to do that,” Trump said. “We need strong borders. We have to stop drugs and crime and criminals and human trafficking and we have to stop all of those things that a strong wall will stop.” He added that his administration is already “working with the Army Corps of Engineers” as he

moves forward with plans to build additional barriers on the southern border. Funds from the Treasury Department and Defense Department would be moved to the Army Corps of Engineers to pay for the wall construction, a separate source familiar with the process said. White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said on Friday that it planned to access $2.5 billion from the Pentagon’s drug interdiction program (some of which would be reprogrammed from other accounts), $600 million from Treasury’s asset forfeiture fund and another $3.6 billion from military construction projects. That’s in addition to Congress appropriating $1.375 billion for additional barriers on the southern border, which Trump considered insufficient. A senior White House official said White House counsel Pat Cipillone will consult with the Justice Department on how to respond to the lawsuits, but the Justice Department will take the lead in the legal response. The White House anticipated the lawsuits to US President’s emergency declaration and are bracing for more, according to the official.

Alabama woman who joined IS should not return to US: Trump WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he directed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to allow Hoda Muthana, an Alabama woman who left in November 2014 to join IS, to return to the US — despite her recent public plea to come back and stand trial in America. “I have instructed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and he fully agrees, not to allow Hoda Muthana back into the Country!,” Trump tweeted. Hours earlier, Pompeo declared that Muthana, who is detained in a Kurdish refugee camp, is not an American citizen, reports CNN. “Ms. Hoda Muthana is not a US citizen and will not be admitted into the US. She does not have any legal basis, no valid US passport, no right to a passport, nor any visa to travel to the US,” Pompeo said in a statement. Muthana, now 24, was a college student when she travelled to Syria over four years ago to join IS — eventually marrying three fighters and calling for the killing of Americans on Twitter. “When I left to Syria I was a naive, angry, and arrogant young woman,” she said in a handwritten statement provided to CNN by a representative. “To say that I regret my past words, any pain that I caused my family and any concerns I would cause my country would be hard for me to really express properly.” —IANS

Sanders launches 2nd Prez bid IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Senator Bernie Sanders announced on Tuesday he is again running for President in 2020 and vowed to finish what he started in his last race for the White House. Sanders lost the Democratic primaries in 2016 to Hillary Clinton. The former first lady lost the election to Donald Trump despite winning three million more votes than Trump. The self-styled socialist, who represents Vermont state as an independent, is set to compete in the Democratic Party primaries. Sanders said he would run a grassroots campaign that re-addresses some of the major issues he focused on in his unsuccessful 2016 bid, such as Medicare-ForAll, raising the minimum wage and tackling climate change and wealth inequality. “We began the political revolution in the 2016 campaign and now it’s time to move that revolu-

tion forward,” Sanders told Vermont Public Radio in an interview. Sanders is one of the most outspoken critic of President Trump, whom he has repeatedly called a “pathological liar” and a “racist”, the New York Times reported. “Make no mistake about it, the powerful special interests in this country have unbelievable power and they want to maintain the status quo,” said the 77-year-old senator, credited with revitalizing the

often-neglected left wing of the Democratic Party. “They have unlimited amounts of money to spend on campaigns and lobbying and have huge influence over the media and political parties. The only way we will win this election is with a grassroots movement the likes of which has never been seen in American history. They may have the money and the power; we have the people,” he said.

US House of Representatives votes against Trump’s emergency Democratic Party leader warns Trump bypassing Congress to fund the barrier was how ‘despots take power’ ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

W

hile US President Donald Trump is half-way around the world in Vietnam for a nuclear summit with North Korea, the House of Representatives has voted against his national emergency declaration for building a $8.1 billion wall along the Mexican border. Although the Democrats and the media played up the vote this week as a victory in their campaign against Trump’s emergency declaration, it is only symbolic as the President has threatened to veto should it also pass the Republican-controlled Senate and the Democrats do not have a two-thirds majority to overturn it, even with some Republicans crossing sides to vote for it. As of February 26 night, the Democrats were still at least a vote

BRIEFS US House passes gun control law WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives has approved a Bill expanding background checks for all gun sales, including those at gun shows and on the internet. The Bipartisan Background Check Act seeks to close loopholes that allow people to buy guns without being subjected to a federal background check — under current law, private purchases are excluded from those checks. The legislation is the most significant gun control measure to make progress in Congress in more than two decades.

US President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency on February 15 to fund the barrier

sition to the emergency is that in bypassing Congress to fund the border project, Trump is violating its constitutional authority on approving government spending. Before the House vote, the Democratic Party leader in the House, Steny Hoyer, warned that Trump bypassing Congress to fund

the barrier was how “despots take power” and could set a precedent. Trump declared a state of emergency on February 15 to fund the barrier, which he says is required to stop drug smuggling, people trafficking and illegal immigration, citing as a humanitarian crisis the several thousand Central Americans massed at some border points after arriving there in caravans hoping to make their way in. The border wall, now scaled by Trump to a series of metal slats along some areas along the frontier, is the point of prestige and contention for Trump, who made it his signature election pledge, and the Democrats. When the Democrats refused to allocate the $5.7 billion that he had asked for it Trump refused to approve the budget leading to a 35day shutdown of non-essential government operations.

US, Venezuela trade barbs at UNSC meeting IANS, UNITED NATIONS

R

epresentatives of the US and Venezuela crossed swords in the UN Security Council during a special session on the situation in the Andean nation, convened at Washington’s request. The US is one of the roughly 50 nations that have recognised opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s acting head of state and denounced incumbent leftist President Nicolas Maduro as illegitimate, Efe news reported this week. “We call on the members of the Security Council to join us in meeting the growing needs in Venezuela and the region. We call on member states to consider what resources and tools they have to contribute to Venezuelan democracy and to pressure the illegitimate Maduro regime to peacefully step down,” the US special representative for Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, said. He said that the world should back Guaido and “address the destabilizing results of Maduro’s corrupt, fraudulent and incompetent reign, which just this weekend brought instability and violence” to the borders of Brazil and Colombia. Abrams was referring to clashes that occurred Saturday as Guaido supporters tried to force their way

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro (Photo: IANS)

into Venezuela with US-donated aid rejected by Maduro as a stalking horse for military invention. Four people died on the Brazilian border and more than 200 others were injured in disturbances on the boundary with Colombia. The US official, who became famous in the 1980s for his role in the Iran-Contra scandal, went on to dismiss appeals from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and others for dialogue between the Maduro government and the opposition.

Abrams told reporters ahead of the session that the US would present this week in the Security Council a resolution calling “for the admission of humanitarian aid into Venezuela” and demanding new elections in the oil-rich country. The two most powerful nations standing with Maduro, China and Russia, hold permanent UNSC seats and can veto any resolution. In his remarks, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza asked the Security Council to pass a resolution rejecting “the threat and the

use of force” against his country. Citing what he described as US preparations for war in Venezuela, he urged the council to “exclude that option completely,” after Abrams reiterated Washington’s “all options are on the table” position. The Foreign Minister said that the violence last weekend on the Colombian border was initiated by Guaido supporters who accompanied the trucks loaded with aid, emphasizing that most of the wounded were members of the Venezuelan security forces. “That was the last chapter in the coup on Saturday,” he said, before directly addressing Abrams in English: “Read my lips - it failed. Now is the time for us to return to sanity.” Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia also weighed in on the events at Venezuela’s borders. “What took place on Saturday was reminiscent not of assistance but what is called force-feeding in the US,” he said, going on to ask rhetorically how other countries would have responded to “an attempted illegal state border crossing for the delivery of unknown cargo.” “One country even wants to build a huge wall on the border of another country to prevent an illegal border crossing,” Nebenzia said, alluding to US President Donald Trump’s desire to build a wall on his country’s border with Mexico.

Confident of winning Lok Sabha election: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (Photo: IANS/BJP)

The Prime Minister warned that ‘a corrupt government’ can return to power if BJP workers committed any slip IANS, NEW DELHI

E

xpressing confidence of winning the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged BJP workers not to commit any mistake so that there are no regrets later. “I believe to get another opportunity to serve the people of the country for the next five years as we have fulfilled the promises made to the people... If there are weaknesses in our efforts, all work done in the last five years will be ruined,” Modi told BJP workers across the country through video conferencing. Hitting out at the Congress, Modi alleged that the government before he came to power in 2014 was indulging in corruption and there was a “policy paralysis” and

‘We eliminated crores of fake beneficiaries’ NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that his government regards delay in completion of government works as “criminal negligence” and asserted that it has eliminated eight crore fake beneficiaries of government schemes and boosted employment with creation of 1.20 crore jobs in a year. Speaking at the Rising India summit organized by CNN-News 18, Modi also took a dig at the opposition leaders coming together, saying their only purpose was to deride and discredit him. He said his government has ensured that every paisa paid by honest tax-payers is used properly. The Prime Minister said his government’s push through the JanDhan scheme led to opening of 32 crore new accounts, and their linking to Aadhaar and mobile numbers has eliminated fake beneficiaries. “There were eight crore fake names and eliminating them has resulted in a saving of Rs 1.10 lakh crore. This amount was going into the pockets of middlemen every year, while our government has sent Rs 6 trillion directly into the accounts of beneficiaries of government schemes,” he said. Referring to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s remark that only 15 per cent of every rupee sent by the government reaches real beneficiary, Modi said now 100 per cent of the money is reaching them.

that “a corrupt government” can return to power if BJP workers committed any slip. “India was the 11th economy before the NDA government came in power and now it is the fastest growing economy in the world and have secured the sixth place. We want to achieve the goal to become the third top economy in the world very soon.” Giving example of the new Congress governments in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Modi alleged that they had been trying to ruin the schemes initiated by previous governments. He said the election in 2014 was to fulfill the needs of the country and the 2019 battle will meet the expectations of every citizen. In a veiled attack on Pakistan, Modi said India needed to stand

united against the “evil designs” of its “enemy” which was hatching a conspiracy to destabilize the country and stop its progress with terror attacks. He also urged people not to do anything which may hurt the morale of the security forces. “When the enemy hatches a conspiracy to destabilize the country and conducts terror attacks, its target is to stop our progress... We all need to stand united against its design. We have to show them this country is not going to stop its progress,” Modi said. “The enemy tries to destabilize us, carries out terror attacks, they want to stop our growth,” the Prime Minister said.

Asking states to file details of procedure followed for rejecting the tribals’ claims, a bench of Justice Arun Mishra, Justice Navin Sinha and Justice M.R. Shah put on hold its own February 13 order directing eviction of tribals in unauthorized possession of forest land.

It also pulled up the Centre for going into slumber and then suddenly approaching the bench advancing the tribals rights.

Saying the entire exercise “can’t be left in the lurch”, the court said that those who are not in authorized possession of forest land must go. However, it made it clear that “mighty people” must not “encroach upon forest land under the guise of Scheduled Tribes and other forest dwellers”. When Solicitor General Tushar Mehta pleaded that there was no procedure for accepting or rejecting claims, Justice Sinha pointed to Section 9 and 10 of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006.

he attack on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men in Pulwana by an Indian born and bred Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militant has aroused a feeling of hatred and revenge in the mind of each and every Indian. The troubles in Kashmir, with no concrete solution in sight since the time of partition, has now reached a stage of anger, frustration and need for serious action. The thought of losing our soldiers, who selflessly protect us from our enemies, to be attacked on our own turf, is unthinkable. The air in India is full of taking forceful revenge against Pakistan, if not through war, then through the most popular sport in Asia, cricket. The focus for revenge has zeroed in towards the forthcoming World Cup cricket tournament to be played in England from May 2019. The call for India to boycott the cricket match against Pakistan during the tournament or banning the latter from participating, has found encouragement, not only from several of the former cricketers but also from many of the emotionally hurt Indians. atmosphere that brings forth not just competitiveness but also fair play and comradery. India, should definitely play cricket against Pakistan in the World Cup 2019. During the World cup in 1999, we did so in the midst of the Kargil war, that too in England. India beat Pakistan at Old Trafford in Manchester, where they are once again slated to play each other on June 16, 2019. There was no adverse

incident reported during and after the match then and everything went off peacefully. India, thereafter, lost in the quarter-finals against New Zealand, whereas Pakistan went through to the finals and were defeated by Australia. The most bewildering aspect now is that some of the former players, who readily played against Pakistan in 1999 and then some years later

enjoyed a wonderful series in Pakistan, are the ones who are so vociferously insisting on not playing them now. The Vajpayee-led government should be complimented for not mixing the game of cricket with our bitter battle against Pakistan, that too in the thick of war. A true sportsman at heart and that is what made Vajpayee such an astute and a good leader. The Board of Control for Crick-

are all steps that can cause a lot of repercussions in the long run. The possibility of India missing out on points, if they do not play Pakistan and being given a zero run penalty could very easily keep them out of the top four qualifiers. The presumption of India playing Pakistan in the final knock-out stage of the World Cup 2019 is a thought dreams are made of. This year the field is wide open and nominating the last four is quite difficult to forecast. There are over three months still left for India to play Pakistan. Cricket needs to be kept out of the agenda of India’s retaliation against Pakistan. Afghanistan has done this well. They too have issues with Pakistan. But for them to finally make it to the elite stage of the world cricket arena is what cricket as a sport is all about.

Revival of regional cinema Boney Kapoor was the biggest propagator of Telugu remakes, most of his brother Anil Kapoor’s hits being remakes VINOD MIRANI, MUMBAI

T

he regional film industries were always marginal to the mainstream Hindi films. This was especially so in the Hindi knowing states from the Hindi belt to the states of Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat in western India. The Punjabi industry which made intermittent films has now blossomed into full-fledged one. However, it was not the same in the south where the local regional films ruled. The south had films in each state language like Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. While Malayalam films were more elitist (and some even tantalizing) as they catered to a more literate state,

Telugu film themes were more acceptable to Hindi tastes. That is why, when a Telugu film was remade in Hindi it usually succeeded followed by Tamil films, compared to a few Kannada or Malayalam films. The best advantage with remaking a Telugu film, besides their subjects’ easy acceptance by Hindi audience was that, they had been tried on, accepted by and proved very successful in local circuits. This trend of remaking Telugu films into Hindi also lured many Telugu filmmakers to make the Hindi version of their own hits. Prominent among them over the years were B. Nagi Reddy, L.V. Prasad, Dr D. Rama Naidu, Anna-

purna Studios, Padmalaya Studios, Ramoji Rao and many more. Hindi makers, often short of ideas, still buy the Hindi remaking rights of the south Indian language hits. Boney Kapoor was the biggest propagator of Telugu remakes, most of his brother Anil Kapoor’s hits being remakes. Besides that, to the south Indian remakes go the credit for the comebacks of two actors, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. Salman Khan staged his major comeback with Wanted, while Ajay Devgn’s very being around today is thanks to Singham (Singam in Tamil) besides Golmaal, which also has its roots in the south.

Trump-Kim summit breaks down The North Korean leader was willing to dismantle a key facility at the heart of his nuclear programme, but wanted all sanctions lifted in exchange, says US President Donald Trump IANS, HANOI

A

summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ended on Thursday with no agreement after Washington refused Pyongyang’s demands for economic sanctions relief. Addressing reporters in the Vietnamese capital after the two-day summit with Kim was abruptly cut short earlier than planned, Trump said that he walked away from signing a denuclearization deal with the North Korean leader after they failed to reach an agreement for economic sanctions on Pyongyang to be lifted. “It was about the sanctions.

Taliban, US to resume Doha talks KABUL: Officials of the US and the Taliban have decided to take a two-day break in the ongoing peace talks in Qatar and regroup again over the weekend for the negotiations aimed at ending the 17-year Afghanistan conflict. US Special Representative for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad tweeted on Thursday negotiators would regroup on Saturday after a two-day pause for internal deliberations. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said both the sides have decided to consult their respective leadership following discussions on the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan and the need for guarantees against terrorism in the war-torn country. —IANS

Basically they wanted sanctions lifted in their entirety and we couldn’t do that... We had to walk away.

Trump insisted that his relationship with Kim was “very warm” and that he was optimistic that further progress could be made while highlighting the improvements in their bilateral relationship since the US leader took office two years ago. Trump said his meeting with Kim didn’t end contentiously but with “a very friendly walk”. “This wasn’t a walk away like you get up and walk out,” Trump told reporters of the end of the summit. “He has a certain vision, it’s not exactly our vision, but it’s a lot closer than it was a year ago. Eventually I think we’ll get there. With time (the gap) will be bridged at a certain point. But there is a gap”, Trump told the media.

Brexit: British PM offers MPs a choice IANS, LONDON

B

ritish Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday MPs would be given a choice to vote on no-deal Brexit or a delayed departure from the European Union (EU) if her deal is rejected in a meaningful vote in mid-March. The Prime Minister said at the House of Commons, “I do not want to see Article 50 to be extended.” “I know that members (of Parliament) are worried that time is running out. I know too that members are deeply concerned about the effect of the uncertainty on businesses.”

Iranian President refuses to accept Zarif’s resignation TEHRAN: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday refused to accept the resignation of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. “Your appeal for resignation is against the country’s expediency. Therefore, I do not accept it,” Rouhani said in response to an earlier resignation letter by Zarif, official IRNA news agency reported. In his Instagram message released on Monday, Zarif announced his resignation, saying “thanks for the great and brave Iranians and my colleagues, but I apologize for my failure to serve you and some flaws in my work”. Zarif, who played a key role in the

“We had to walk away from that particular suggestion of completely lifting the economic sanctions on North Korea”, Trump said,

adding that neither he nor Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “felt it was appropriate to sign an agreement”. “We had papers ready to be signed, but it wasn’t appropriate. I wanted to do it right, rather than fast,” Trump said. According to the US leader, Kim said he was willing to dismantle the Yongbyon complex — the development and testing facility at the heart of North Korea’s nuclear programme — but wanted all sanctions on North Korea lifted in exchange, something the US was not prepared to do. He added that no plans had been made for a third summit with the regime leader. Although no deal was signed,

2015 nuclear deal aimed at reining in Iran’s nuclear programme, did not give a reason why he was stepping down. He has served as Foreign Minister Foreign MinMohammad Javad Zarif ister since 2013. Rouhani described Zarif as a “trustable, brave and pious” person and an official who has always been at the “frontline of resistance against the US pressures”. —IANS

May said she was working hard to win a legally binding assurance on the backstop to avoid a hard border on the Irish Island after the planned exit on March 29, Xinhua news agency reported. The deal, reached by London and Brussels after months of painful negotiations, has been rejected by MPs. Thus, the Prime Minister needs to talk to the unyielding EU leaders on a revised deal to get her agreement passed by Parliament. “We will hold a second meaningful vote by March 12, at the latest,” May said. According to May, once the government’s Brexit plan fails to pass

the March 12 vote, the government will table a motion to be voted on March 13 at the latest, “asking this House if it supports the EU without a withdrawal agreement and a framework for a future relationship on March 29.”

And if the House rejects no-deal Brexit, the government will on March 14 “bring forward a motion on whether Parliament wants to seek a short, limited extension to Article 50”, said the Prime Minister.

UNSC on Venezuela resolutions IANS, UNITED NATIONS

T

he UN Security Council is set to consider conflicting resolutions on the situation in Venezuela from the United States and Russia, diplomatic sources said here. The US recognizes Juan Guaido, the leader of Venezuela’s oppositioncontrolled National Assembly, as the oil-rich nation’s acting president, while Russia supports incumbent head of state Nicolas Maduro, Efe news reported on Wednesday. Both texts have been circulated among the 15 members and the council is likely to take up the competing resolutions in a single session on Thursday, the sources said. The US draft, seen by EFE, calls

Nicolas Maduro. (File Photo: IANS)

for the start of a peaceful political process in Venezuela that leads to “free, fair and credible presidential elections” and urges UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres to employ his “good offices” toward that end.

Washington regards the May 2018 ballot that brought Maduro second term to be illegitimate. The document likewise insists on the need to avoid a worsening of the humanitarian situation in Venezuela and demands that the Maduro government allow the entry of US aid stockpiled in neighboring Brazil and Colombia. Russia’s draft warns against the use of force against the Maduro administration and emphasizes the principles of national sovereignty and non-interference. The US is in the vanguard of the roughly 50 countries, including the major European powers except Italy, that have recognized Guaido since he proclaimed himself interim president on January 23.

IAF avenges JeM Pulwama bombing The Indian Air Force bombed Jaish-e-Mohammed’s (JeM) biggest training camp in Pakistan, killing ‘a very large number’ of terrorists and their trainers in a pre-dawn operation ‘India stands as one against evil designs’ NEW DELHI: In a veiled attack on Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India “stands as one” against the “evil designs” of its “enemy” which was hatching a conspiracy to destabilizes the country and stop its progress with terror attacks while he expressed confidence that he will return to power in the elections. Interacting with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers through video conference, he also urged people not to do anything which may hurt the morale of the security forces. “When the enemy hatches a conspiracy to destabilize the country and conducts terror attacks, its target is to stop our progress... We all need to stand united against its design. We have to show them this country is not going to stop its progress,” Modi said. “The enemy tries to destabilize us, carries out terror attacks, they want to stop our growth. All countrymen are standing like a rock to counter their evil designs.”

n a chilling message to Pakistan that it cannot keep messing with India, the IAF bombed the Jaish-eMohammed’s (JeM) biggest training camp killing “a very large number” of terrorists and their trainers in a pre-dawn operation on Tuesday -- exactly 12 days after a JeM suicide bomber killed 40 CRPF troopers in the Kashmir Valley. Speaking publicly for the first time after the IAF attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told a public rally at Churu in Rajasthan that “today is a historic day” but made no reference to Pakistan or JeM whose suicide bombing at Pulwama on February 14 sent New Delhi-Islamabad ties on a nose-dive. Within hours, a furious Pakistan threatened a “befitting response”. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan called a meeting on Wednesday of the National Command Authority, which controls the country’s nuclear arsenal. After initially insisting that the Indian action took place in that part of Kashmir it controls, Pakistani military authorities finally admitted that the IAF had hit Bal-

The fighter jets were backed by Emb 145 early warning plane which was deployed to pick up any emerging threat at a large distance and alert the attacking pilots. India also used a mid-air refueller. The Mirage 2000 fires a range of Western weapons. After the upgrade, the Mirages have Mica air-to-air multi-mission missiles

and a range of precision guided bombs including Israeli Spice. As celebrations erupted across India, Foreign Secretary Vijay K. Gokhale said: “India struck the biggest training camp of JeM in Balakot. In this operation, a very large number of JeM terrorists, trainers, senior commanders and groups of jehadis who were being trained for fidayeen action were eliminated. “This facility at Balakot was headed by Maulana Yusuf Azhar (alias Ustad Ghouri), the brother-in-law of (JeM leader) Masood Azhar.” Gokhale said the Indian government was “firmly and resolutely committed to taking all necessary measures to fight the menace of terrorism. Hence, this non-military pre-emptive action was specifically targeted at the JeM camp. The selection of the target was also conditioned by our desire to avoid civilian casualties.” He said that such “massive training facilities capable of training hundreds of jehadis could not have functioned without the knowledge of Pakistani authorities”. Following the attack, India has heightened vigil along its border with Pakistan.

India foils attempt to target military installations IANS, NEW DELHI

“In this engagement, we have unfortunately lost one MiG-21. The pilot is missing in action. Pakistan has claimed that he is in their custody. We are ascertaining the facts,” Kumar said. Pakistan’s attempt to target military installations came 24 hours after Indian fighter jets pounded major terror training camps in the neighboring country in what New Delhi called was a “non-military and pre-emptive strike”. The action came 12 days after a JeM suicide bomber killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force troopers at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14. ABHINANDAN BACK, I NATION CELEBRATES

IANS, ATTARI (PUNJAB)

AF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was on March 1 evening handed over to Indian High Commission officials at Pakistan’s Wagah border, Indian officials said. The IAF pilot was captured in Pakistan on February 27 after his MIG-21 Bison fighter jet was shot down during a dogfight near the Line of Control (LoC). Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced this week that the captured IAF pilot will be freed as a “goodwill gesture” on March 1 after New Delhi sought his unconditional, immediate and unharmed release. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh expressed his desire to receive the IAF pilot after he is freed. “Dear @narendramodi ji, I’m touring the border areas of Punjab

Amid the global pressure, Pakistan hands over IAF Wing Commander to India Abhinandan Varthaman

& I’m presently in Amritsar. Came to know that @pid_gov has decided to release #AbhinandanVartaman from Wagha. It will be an honour for me to go and receive him, as he and his father are alumnus of the NDA as I am,” he said in a tweet. Amarinder Singh had earlier welcomed Imran Khan’s announcement as “a goodwill gesture that would help ease the prevailing tensions at the border”. The CM is presently touring the villages near the border with Pakistan. He has also extended all support on behalf of his government to the Border Security Force (BSF) to deal with the current situation in the aftermath of the IAF air strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp at Balakot in Pakistan in the wee hours of February 26.

Qureshi’s remarks during an exclusive CNN interview this week came after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said that Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, the captured Indian Air Force pilot, will be released on March 1 as a “peace gesture”. “Prime Minister Khan made the statement (about Varthaman’s release) while addressing a joint session of Parliament and this is a goodwill gesture. This is an expression of Pakistan’s willingness to deescalate,” the Minister told CNN. When asked if Azhar was in Pakistan and if authorities would go after him in the wake of the escalation of tensions, Qureshi replied: “Well he is in Pakistan. “According to my information, he is very unwell. Johri reportedly expressed satisfaction with the ICC’s security arrangements during the World Cup which starts on May 30. 2019 World Cup set to grab eyeballs NEW DELHI: The 2019 ODI World Cup — the 12th edition of the storied tournament — will feature the round robin format in its first phase, a deviation from the group league stage of the previous editions. The format for the opening round is a single group of ten teams, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals. This will be the first World Cup not to feature all Test playing nations since with the admission of Ireland and Afghanistan in June 2017, the number of countries eligible to contest the five-day version has increased to 12. —IANS

A BCCI official confirmed that a member of the Supreme Courtappointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) did, in fact, propose this during a meeting last week but it was not backed by others who felt that foreign players should not get involved in India-Pakistan hostility. “The BCCI had resolved at the Special General Meeting that the members participation agreement shall not be executed without the authorization of the general body of the BCCI and the BCCI reserves all its rights regarding the MPA (members participation agreement)...,” BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry had said.

Chasing a below-par 162, India broke little sweat with opener Smriti Mandhana (63) leading the charge in the company of skipper Mithali Raj (47 not out) and Punam Raut (32) to reach the target comfortably. NEW DELHI: The debate over whether India should play Pakistan in their World Cup group-stage encounter in Manchester on June 16 has kicked off again following the Indian Air Force action against terror targets in Balakot, Pakistan. Officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are yet to meet the government over the issue and take a call on the matter but one of them said after the Balakot operation that if the government wanted the Indian team to stop playing Pakistan in multi-nation events, the board would follow the directive. lenn Maxwell cracked a superlative unbeaten century to help Australia register their maiden T20 series victory over India with a win in the second and final Twenty20 international at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium this week. Maxwell’s scintillating 113 off 55 balls overshadowed Virat Kohli’s 38ball 72 which helped India post a competitive 190/4 in 20 overs. Chasing 191 for victory, Maxwell smashed as many as nine sixes and seven fours on way to his third century in the shortest format as the visitors posted 194/3 to win by seven wickets with two balls to spare. tralia had won the first T-20 in Vizag on February 24 by 3 wickets and take the series 2-0 with five onedayers now coming up.

India rode on Kohli’s brilliance and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 23ball 40 with the pair adding a 100run stand for the fourth wicket.

But Maxwell took the game away from India single-handedly. Prior to the game, Australia had never beaten India in a T20 series, home or away. They had beaten India way back in 2008 at Melbourne but that was a one-off game. The visitors kept themselves in the chase despite a shaky start which saw them being reduced to 22/2 in four overs.

ith barely few weeks to go for simultaneous elections to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and the Lok Sabha, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy has shifted to his new residence-cum-office in this state capital to up the ante against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The Leader of Opposition, who was hitherto operating from his palatial house and YSRCP office in Hyderabad, will now spend most of his time here to gear up for the polls, likely to be held in AprilMay. Parrikar was admitted to the state-run health facility after he suffered internal bleeding. “Chief Minister has been discharged from GMC. His health parameters are stable. poll preparedness, including the selection of party candidates. As the ensuing elections likely to

be a direct fight between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSRCP, Jagan is preparing to

go all out against Chandrababu Naidu. With the YSRCP winding up its activities in Telangana, it was only a matter of time for the party to relocate its headquarters to Amaravati. The party did not contest last December’s Assembly elections in Telangana but declared its support to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which won a resounding mandate. The TRS, which retained power in Telangana, reciprocated the gesture by announcing its support to Jagan. Jagan, who is also a businessman, and his party shifted base to Andhra Pradesh three years after Naidu and the state administration relocated from Hyderabad. Chandrababu Naidu had been taunting Jagan for confining him-

self to his palatial Lotus Pond residence in Hyderabad. Naidu also ridiculed Jagan for building a ‘lavish’ house in Amaravati and alleged that living in palaces was his obsession. “We were working hard here for five years but Jagan did not leave Hyderabad because wherever he goes he needs palaces to stay,” said the TDP chief. Naidu said Jagan who already owns ‘palaces’ in Bengaluru, Anantapur and Hyderabad, had now built one in Amaravati too. Banking on the legacy of his late father Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, 46year-old Jagan is confident that people of Andhra Pradesh will give the YSRCP the mandate this time as Naidu had failed to fulfill all the promises he had made in previous elections.

Maha presents interim budget with Rs 19,784 crore deficit IANS, MUMBAI

M

aharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar presented the interim budget for the fiscal 2019-20 with an estimated deficit of Rs 19,784 crore, here on Wednesday. With an eye on the upcoming elections, the budget has also made a special provision for the farm debts waiver, though the state’s outstanding debt has shot up to Rs 414,411 crore or 14.82 per cent of the state’s Gross Domestic Product. According to the budgetary provisions, the revenue receipts are expected at Rs 314,489 crore against an estimated revenue expenditure of Rs 334,273 crore, he said.

Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar and State Minister (Finance and Planning) Deepak Vasant Kesarkar.

The state’s annual plan outlay has been fixed at Rs 99,000 crore for implementing various schemes

and Mungantiwar assured that the government would attempt to rein in deficits by scrapping unneces-

sary expenses and effectively augmenting revenues. However, he attributed the deficit to the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations which were approved last year and which burdened the state’s finances. Among the major provisions are Rs 90 crore for a skill development programme in the memory of late Union Minister Pramod Mahajan, Rs 8,431 crore towards a tribal sub-plan and Rs 9,000 crore for district annual plans. Last year, the revenue deficit of Rs 15,374 crore was controlled to Rs 14,960 crore in the current fiscal. Minister of State for Finance Deepak Kesarkar tabled the interim budget in the Legislative Council.

community news Indian Americans Converge in Huge Protest Rally in Downtown Chicago 2

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

FRIDAY,01 MARCH, 2019

BY STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL- With the chants of “Bharat Matha Ki Jai’ reverberating on the famed Michigan Avenue corridor, a massive congregation of deeply grieved Indian Americans bearing tricolor Indian and star-spangled American flags with placards of denouncing Pakistan for promoting terrorism - thundered through the famed Michigan Ave corridor with a huge protest rally in front of Pakistan Consulate Office that which shifted to the Chinese Consulate Office in what can be described as the largest rally of the Indian Americans in downtown Chicago on Thursday, February 21, 2019. More than 400 motivated Indian Americans assembled to show strength of unity and solidarity with the fallen soldiers. Large convoys of remarkable size of Indian Americans arrived in buses, cars and trains to show solidarity with India especially the victims of Pulwama terrorist attack perpetrated under the tacit sanction of Pakistan. Raising slogans within an earshot of Pakistani Consul General, the crowds continued to raise the protest decibels. In some remarks, emotions were visible but the resolve was unmistakably firm with each pledging to do their part to awaken the world community of these seemingly frequent murderous assaults on Indians. The protest rally and the aftermath has spilled over massively on an unprecedented scale in the social media with texts pouring in at astonishing speed filling up the platform with grief, sorrow and anger for the cowardly terrorist attack and vowed that Indian Americans will launch a sustained campaign against Pakistan until it stops the cross-border terrorism. With the patriotic fervor spilling over on the sidewalks of Michigan Ave. all the way to

the Chinese Consulate Office down a mile away on Erie Street. The slogans and remarks were interspersed with grief and outrage at the dastardly attack on 40 helpless CRPF soldiers who were ambushed with a suicide attack. Dr. Bharat Barai, a prominent Indian American community leader in his remarks welcomed the outpouring support of the Indian Americans gathered on a cold afternoon and thanked them for their patrotic spirit. Dr. Bharat Barai chastised Pakistan for their continued mayhem with their murderous terrorism rampage in India repeatedly. The protest rally was largely led by Hemant Patel, Nirav Patel, J.D. Digvanker, Shamkanth Sheth, Prasad Yelalmanchi, Amar Upadhyay, Nitin Garg, Pandya, Chirayu Parikh and chief coordinator Amitabh Mittal. Each of them articulated messages that summarized that Pakistan is a hub of terrorism and is constantly manufacturing company of terrorist; while

harboring and nurturing them to be a dark men of death. FIA’s prominent Trustee Iftekhar Shareef in his remarks expressed outrage and demanded Pakistan cease & desist from perpetrating terrorism mayhem in India. Iftekhar Shareef urged the International communities to join India in collectively condemning this heinous act. Harish Kolasani, Rally Coordinator said if Pakistan were able to kill one Indian, there would be one million who will rise up against them. Dr. Sanhita Agnihotri deeply lamented the loss of lives of the soldiers and pledged that the Indian American community will formulate a plan to support the families of the victims with the support of NGO organizations. Keerthi Kumar Ravoori said we mourn the loss of life of the soldiers in this deadliest terrorist attack in India and challenged Pakistan government to take proactive measurable actions to snub the scourge of terrorism.
