Trump slams book on his administration

U

S President Donald Trump has said that Defense Secretary James Mattis will remain in office, dismissing reports that he is looking for possible replacements for the Pentagon chief. “He’ll stay right there. We’re very happy with him. We’re having a lot of victories,” Trump said on Wednesday when asked by reporters at the White House whether he was considering replacing Mattis. The remarks came as The Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin wrote in an article that the administration has been considering possible replacements for Mattis for weeks. Rogin added that no decisions were made yet, though White House officials expected that Mattis will leave his position in the

BRIEFS Trump, May discuss national security WASHINGTON: The White House has said US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May have discussed national security issues. In a statement on Wednesday, the White House said the discussion between the two leaders took place on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported. White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders said that Trump and May spoke about “a range of National Security issues and they both look forward to seeing one another at the UN General Assembly meeting later this month”.

Jon Kyl to take John McCain’s Senate seat WASHINGTON: Governor of the US state of Arizona, Doug Ducey, announced on Tuesday that he has appointed former Republican Senator Jon Kyl to fill the Senate seat vacated by Senator John McCain, who died last month. “There is no one in Arizona with the stature of Senator Jon Kyl,” Ducey told reporters in Phoenix, with Kyl at his side. “He is a man without comparable peer,” Xinhua reported. coming months. The Trump-Mattis relationship was put under limelight a day earlier after excerpts from an explosive book mentioned that the Defense Secretary had made disparaging remarks about the President.

According to the book, “Fear: Trump in the White House”, authored by veteran investigative reporter Bob Woodward, Mattis was quoted as having told associates that Trump acted like “a fifthor sixth-grader”.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has slammed an explosive book about his administration. Trump on Wednesday said the book, written by US veteran investigative journalist Bob Woodward, “means nothing” and called it “a work of fiction” during a photo op with visiting Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber AlSabah at the White House, Xinhua reported. Woodward’s book — “Fear: Trump in the White House” — is to be released next week. According to excerpts obtained by media outlets, Trump’s aides describe him as a “liar” and an “idiot” who is running a “crazytown.” —IANS

Mattis denied earlier that he ever said or heard the quotes attributed to him in the book. “While I generally enjoy reading fiction, this is a uniquely Washington brand of literature, and his anonymous sources do not lend credibility,” Mattis said in a statement. Trump called Woodward’s book “a total piece of fiction”, while praising Mattis’ statement as “beautiful”. In a statement to The Washington Post, Woodward said, “I stand by my reporting”. According to the author, the book was based on hundreds of hours of conversations with direct players. Woodward has been a reporter at The Washington Post since 1971 and remains an associate editor. He is most famous for breaking the story of the Watergate scandal, which prompted the resignation of Richard Nixon from the presidency in 1974.

Trump threatens government shut down IANS, WASHINGTON

‘Op-ed by senior official gutless’

U

S President Donald Trump has once again threatened to shut down the federal government over border security this time. “If it happens it happens. If it’s about border security, I’m willing to do anything,” Trump told the media at the White House on Wednesday. “If we don’t protect our borders our country is not going to be a country, so if it’s about border security I’m willing to do what has to be done,” the president added. The remark comes ahead of Trump’s meeting with congressional leaders over the legislative agenda for the next few months, including extending funding for the federal government past a Sep-

tember 30 deadline, Xinhua news agency reported. Trump had earlier in late July fired off threats to shut down the government. However, during an interview with The Daily Caller published

earlier on Wednesday, Trump said he did not like the idea of government shutdowns. “I don’t see even myself or anybody else closing down the country right now,” he said.

Possible to meet Rouhani at UN: Donald Trump IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has said it is possible for him to meet his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani at the UN. Speaking on Wednesday before a bilateral meeting with Kuwait’s visiting Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-

Sabah, Trump said “anything is possible” regarding the meeting, Xinhua reported. “Whether they want to talk or not, that’s up to them, not up to me,” he said. “I will always be available... we’ll see what happens.” Trump said on July 30 that he is ready to meet with Rouhani without preconditions.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

“I’d meet with anybody. I believe in meeting,” Trump said. “They want to meet, I’ll meet. Any time they want. Good for the country.

WASHINGTON: An unnamed senior US administration official has assailed President Donald Trump’s “amorality” and reckless decision-making in an op-ed and said he or she is part of a “resistance” working to thwart Trump’s worst impulses. “The dilemma — which (Trump) does not fully grasp — is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations,” the New York Times piece read. “I would know. I am one of them.”

Good for them. Good for us. And good for the world.” However, the US in August reimposed sanctions on Iran that had been suspended under a landmark 2015 nuclear deal. Rouhani said in response that the Iranians would make the US “regretful” for its renewal of sanctions. He also said that the US administration “is not trustworthy for any negotiations” after its withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, since “negotiations with sanctions do not make sense” at all.

SC decriminalizes homosexuality The verdict sparked celebrations in the LGBTIQ community even as the judgment was being read out IANS, NEW DELHI

Homosexuality verdict will help eliminate stigma: UN

I

n a historic verdict, the Supreme Court on Thursday decriminalized homosexuality between consenting adults by declaring Section 377, the penal provision which criminalized gay sex, as “manifestly arbitrary”. In separate but unanimous verdicts, a five-judge Constitution Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Rohinton Nariman, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Indu Malhotra partially struck down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as unconstitutional. The bench said it is no longer an offense for LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual, intersex and queer/questioning) community to engage in consensual sex between two adults in private. Reading out the judgment, Chief Justice Misra said attitudes and mentality have to change to accept others’ identity and accept what they are, and not what they should be. “It is the constitutional and not social morality which will prevail,” said the court.

The verdict sparked celebrations in the LGBTIQ community across India even as the judgment was being read out. Many of the community members who had assembled outside the apex court jumped in joy and distributed sweets. Chief Justice Misra said consensual sex between adults in a private space, which is not harmful to women or children, cannot be denied as it is a matter of individual choice. Section 377 will not apply

to consensual same-sex acts between homosexuals, heterosexuals, lesbians, the court said, clarifying that sexual act without consent and bestiality will continue to be an offense under section 377. “An individual has full liberty over his or her body and his or her sexual orientation is a matter of one’s choice,” said the Chief Justice. “Time to bid adieu to prejudicial perceptions deeply ingrained in social mindset. NEW DELHI: Welcoming the Supreme Court’s verdict on Thursday decriminalizing homosexuality, the UN said the verdict will help eliminate stigma and discrimination against the LGBTIQ community. “Sexual orientation and gender expression form an integral part of an individual’s identity the world over, and violence, stigma and discrimination based on these attributes constitute an egregious violation of human rights. “LGBTIQ persons across the world continue to be the targets of violent attacks and are affected by multiple

and intersecting forms of discrimination based on age, gender, ethnicity, disability and social status,” the UN said in a statement. “The UN in India sincerely hopes that the court’s ruling will be the first step towards guaranteeing the full range of fundamental rights to the LGBTIQ persons. “We also hope that the judgment will boost efforts to eliminate stigma and discrimination against them in all areas of social, economic, cultural and political activity, thereby ensuring a truly inclusive society.” —IANS

LGBTIQ community against discrimination. They should be allowed to make their choices,” he added. In a concurring judgement, Justice Nariman said homosexuality is “not a mental disorder or disease”.

He said the LGBTIQ community has an equal right to live with dignity and are entitled to equal protection of law. He directed the Centre to give wide publicity to this judgment to remove the stigma attached to homosexuality.

in the deal to purchase fighter jets, Jaitley said the government has no role to play in the choice by the private manufacturer of an offsets partner. “There is no scope of role of any private party in the entire transaction. All the 36 aircraft will reach India in flying condition and nothing will be added here. There is no scope for a private party but you keep alleging.” Attacking Gandhi, who has spearheaded the Congress attack on the Rafale deal, Jaitley said he was making baseless allegations. “The Congress has proved that in dynastic politics, ignorance is contagious. If a person is ill-

informed and does not have sufficient information, then the entire party lacks information. Let the problem remain within the Congress,” he said. “To satisfy the ego of an illinformed gentleman, there are no options,” he added. He accused the Congress of doing little to boost indigenous production of advanced weaponry and said that the NDA government had helped the process by liberalizing FDI norms in defense first to 26 per cent and then raising it to 49 per cent. Jaitley said there can be more than 49 per cent FDI in special cases.

put up road blocks on national and state highways. Schools declared a holiday to ensure the safety of students. In Mathura and Vrindavan,

the bandh was total as protesters took out marches and blocked main roads. In Firozabad, even Muslim shopkeepers joined the shutdown.

A protestor said: “Our anger is directed towards the recent changes in the Act which empowers the police to arrest anyone without investigations. We are not opposed to persons belonging to the SC/ST.” The bandh has placed political parties in a dilemma. Officially the Congress, Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party have remained neutral, but their members are openly supporting the shutdown. The massive turnout for a series of marches, to protest the amendment to the Act, over the last few days have sent panic signals to the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party.

World Hindu Congress: A MESSAGE OF UNITY ANEW 125 years after Swami Vivekananda’s speech in the US, about 2,300 delegates will converge in Chicago this month to deliberate, introspect and draw out a plan of action ASHOK EASWARAN, CHICAGO

A

century-and-a-quarter after Swami Vivekananda’s rousing speech to the World Parliament of Religions here in 1893, the World Hindu Congress has declared its objective to re-connect the 1.1 billion Hindus worldwide with their common heritage and their spiritual link to people of all other denominations. For three days, beginning September 7, about 2,300 delegates will converge at the Westin Hotel in Lombard, a Chicago suburb, to deliberate, introspect and draw out a plan of action in keeping with the World Hindu Congress conference motto derived from Chapter 37 of the Hindu epic Mahabharata -- Sumantrite Suvikrante (Think Collectively, Act Valiantly) and from the Rig Veda: Sam Gacchadhvam Sam Vadadhvam (Stay Together, Express Together). The Westin Hotel is some 32 km from the Art Institute of Chicago, where Vivekananda’s bust commemorates the spot he spoke from. Many religious leaders are scheduled to attend the Hindu Congress conference. A video message from

the Dalai Lama, who had to drop out due to frail health, will be screened. Speakers in the various events include professor Ved Nanda of the University of Denver; Lord Jitesh Gadhia, the youngest Briton of Indian origin in the House of Lords; Swati Dandekar, a former legislator from Iowa; Congressman Raja Krishnmoorthi; Columbia

professor Arvind Panagariya, a former economic advisor to the Indian government; and the actor, Anupam Kher. The overwhelming majority of the 2,300 delegates — 1,300 — are from North America, with other delegates coming from 60 countries. For Indian immigrants, much has changed in Chicago since 1893.

Over a century ago, Vivekananda spent a night shivering in a railway yard before a Good Samaritan took him in. He cut an exotic figure in his flowing robes, with passersby pulling at his saffron turban as he walked on the streets. At the parliament, Americans heard a Hindu monk speak on behalf of his religion for the first

Kerala’s devastation: Why can’t we learn from others? RAJENDRA SHENDE, NEW DELHI

T

wenty years ago, in August 1998, then Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji proposed, in a meeting of China’s State Council, a total ban on logging in the forest slopes of Sichuan province. It was in response to the devastating flood-crisis that China was facing in the Yangtze river basin. That policy was enacted overnight, while the floods in Yangtze river were still at its peak and rescue operations were in full swing. It was just a year after the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, but Zhu was in no mood to analyze if that extreme event was due to climate change. He cited that similar devastation had occurred due to Yangtze floods in 1870, 1931 and 1954

when climate change was not around. Zhu declared severe punishment for logging in the same meeting and incentivized afforestation with ambitious targets by 2000 and 2010. The same month, but now 2018, India is facing the devastation in Kerala, the worst ever since 1924. With over 400 dead and a million homeless, the questions are gushing like the waters from the flood gates of its dams. Is it a natural or man-made disaster? Is it climatic event or due to global warming? It is easy and convenient to link the causative chain to climate change. Indeed, global warming has led to a rise in ocean and atmosphere temperatures (nearly one degree Celsius over pre-industrial times) which has resulted in the increased frequen-

time. Today, Chicago and its suburbs have more than a dozen expansive Hindu temples. Discourses by the likes of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev attract packed audiences. The faith’s underlying message, in 1893 and 2018, is unity and tolerance. In his now famous speech, Vivekananda, who is regarded by many as more of a social reformer than a religious leader, spoke of the fact that India has sheltered “the remnants of the Israelites who came to South India seeking refugee from Roman tyranny, and remnants of the grand Zoroastrian nation”. Another common message, then and now, is of dharma-righteousness for its own sake. Following his speech, an American journalist commented: “Vivekananda’s address before the parliament was broad as the heavens above us, embracing the best in all religions, as the ultimate universal religion -charity to all mankind, good works for the love of God, not for fear of punishment or hope of reward.” Do Hindus, especially those in alien lands, need to take a long hard look at Hinduism? This is a question that hangs uneasily in the air when Indian Americans talk of current events in India. cy and intensity of extreme weather events over the last six decades. Indiscriminate logging in Kerala has reduced the forest cover between 1920 and 1990 by 40 per cent, according to the report of Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel. This has reduced the soil’s capacity to hold the mud-slides. Illegal mining, including that of sand and stones that “bank” the flood waters, is rampant in Kerala. Is there way out? There are numerous examples and initiatives to learn from and to participate in. Switzerland (about the same size as Kerala) has 200 major dams as against Kerala’s 61. Collaborating with Switzerland on such dam-management and inundation-mapping would prepare India in future. In Kerala, dam safety analysis had not been done for any of its 61 dams. China has now acquired huge experience in disaster and flood management; five most deadly floods in human history were all in China. Cooperation with China would go a long way in managing and containing the flood damage.

S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Pakistan on Thursday to take decisive measures against terrorists threatening regional peace. In his meetings in Islamabad with Pakistani leaders, he “conveyed the need for Pakistan to take sustained and decisive measures against terrorists and militants threatening regional peace and stability,” his spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement. Pompeo, who is on his way to New Delhi for the 2+2 Strategic Dialogue, stopped over in Islamabad to meet the recently-elected Prime Minister Imran Khan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa. He was accompanied by US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of

Arif Alvi wins Pak presidential election ISLAMABAD: The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) candidate Arif Alvi won the presidential election of the country on Tuesday, according to official TV channel PTV News and initial reports of vote counting. Three candidates competed for the post of the 13th president of the country for the next five-year term. Besides Alvi, PML-N backed chief of the Muttahida Majlis-eAmal (MMA) Fazlur Rehman, and senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan were also in contention.

No second Brexit referendum: British PM LONDON: British Prime Minister Theresa May on Saturday ruled out the possibility of a second Brexit referendum, claiming that it would be “a gross betrayal of the British democracy”. Her comments came as a signed article by May appeared on the Daily Telegraph website Saturday night. “This government will fulfill the democratic decision of the British people by ensuring that the UK leaves the European Union on 29th March next year — and that as we do so, we build a stronger, more meritocratic Britain that is fit for the future,” she wrote in the article. —IANS

ISLAMABAD: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday reached Islamabad to meet with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to discuss the bilateral relations. This is the first high-level visit from Washington since the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government assumed office, Geo TV reported. Pompeo said he hopes to reset the relations between the US and Pakistan. “We hope that both countries could leave the past behind and begin to make progress,” he was quoted as saying. He also said the Trump administration could release aid to Pakistan that was halted earlier in 2018. —IANS

stability,” she added. The statement did not mention anything about two crucial issues clouding US-Pakistan relations: the withholding of US, and Washington’s refusal so far, to back Islamabad’s request for an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout for the cash-strapped country. Giving the Pakistani version of the meetings, Qureshi said both sides — Pakistan and the US — agreed to “reset” their bilateral relations, GeoTV reported. In a meeting en route to Pakistan with reporters accompanying him, Pompeo had said on Wednesday, “I wanted to get out there at the beginning of his (Khan’s) time in an effort to reset the relationship between the two countries.” GeoTV reported that Qureshi told a news conference, “We presented realistic stance to the United States authorities.”

The first explosion occurred at 5.55 p.m. on Wednesday after a terrorist shot dead a security guard and detonated his explosive belt inside Maywand Wrestling Gym in Dasht-i-Barchi neighborhood, killing six sportsmen and injuring

10 others, Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai told Xinhua news agency. The second blast occurred outside the compound about an hour later. India, US strategic ties get boost

The two sides held first 2+2 talks between Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and US counterparts Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Defense Secretary James Mattis IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia and the US on Thursday elevated their strategic ties to a new level and signed a longnegotiated defense pact that will enable Indian armed forces to buy more sensitive military equipment from Washington while they also pledged to cooperate for ensuring “a free, open Indo-Pacific” region to contain China’s expansionist aspirations. The two sides held their first 2+2 talks between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and their US counterparts Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary James Mattis. The talks among other key outcomes culminated into the signing of Communications, Compatibility, Security Agreement (COMCASA). Sitharaman and Mattis signed the pact as two of the most powerful men in the world negotiated with two top women ministers of India. Addressing the media after the talks, Swaraj and Sitharaman said the two sides have concluded the COMCASA pact, taking their already close strategic and defense ties to an advanced level. “Defense came out as the singlemost important aspect of our discussions today,” Sitharaman said. “We are also putting in place an enabling framework for closer cooperation between our defense

forces. The signing of COMCASA today will enable India to access advanced technologies from the US and enhance India’s defense preparedness.” The pact guarantees India access to critical US defense technologies and communication network to help the militaries of the two countries in their interoperability. Indian armed forces will now also be allowed to install US-made high-security communication equipment on defense platforms

sourced from America. COMCASA is the second of the three foundational agreements needed for interoperability with the US. The two countries had earlier inked the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement in 2016. However, the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement remains pending. Secretary Pompeo told the reporters that the US and India shared a commitment to “a safe, secure, prosperous, free and open

Indo-Pacific region” -- the region in India’s backyard where China has expanded its military presence, threatening trade on the key maritime line. “The two sides also agreed to boost the rule of law, national sovereignty, peaceful resolution of maritime and other issues. We decided to elevate our strategic relations for more cooperation. We also agreed to increase military cooperation with India.” Sitharaman said maritime secu-

rity was one of the focuses of the ties and “to deepen our cooperation in this area, we will expand our interactions on maritime domain awareness”. She recalled that the US had renamed its Pacific Command responsible for relations with India as Indo-Pacific Command which reflected “our wider global partnership” and would “enhance our interactions with the US military’s Central Command”. A joint statement issued after the talks recognized “that the two sides are strategic partners, major and independent stakeholders in world affairs”. It noted their commitment to work together and “in concert with other partners toward advancing a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region, based on recognition of ASEAN centrality and on respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, rule of law, good governance, free and fair trade, and freedom of navigation and overflight”. The two sides emphasized the need to work collectively with other partner countries to support transparent, responsible, and sustainable debt financing practices in infrastructure development and connectivity for the Indo-Pacific region. Secretary Mattis described the inaugural 2+2 dialogue “productive and forward thinking” to boost “our bilateral relationship and our shared future”.

Stop terror attacks from your soil: India, US to Pak IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia and the US have told Pakistan not to let its soil be used by terrorists to carry out cross-border terror attacks while demanding that the perpetrators of earlier terror attacks be expeditiously brought to justice. New Delhi and Washington also committed to work together toward advancing a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. “The Ministers denounced any use of terrorist proxies in the region, and in this context, they called on Pakistan to ensure that the territory under its control is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries,” a joint statement issued following the first ever 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue attended by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis

here said. “On the eve of the 10year anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai attack, they called on Pakistan to bring to justice expeditiously the perpetrators of the Mumbai, Pathankot, Uri, and other cross-border terrorist attacks,” it stated. “The Ministers welcomed the launch of a bilateral dialogue on designation of terrorists in 2017,

which is strengthening cooperation and action against terrorist groups, including Al Qaeda, ISIS (IS or Islamic State), Lashkar-eTayyiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Hizb-ul Mujahideen, the Haqqani Network, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, D-Company, and their affiliates.” According to the statement, the Ministers welcomed the expansion of bilateral counter-ter-

rorism cooperation and announced their intent to increase information-sharing efforts on known or suspected terrorists and to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2396 on returning foreign terrorist fighters. While committing to enhance their ongoing cooperation in multilateral fora such as the UN and Financial Action Task Force (FATF), they reaffirmed their support for the India-initiated UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism “that will advance and strengthen the framework for global cooperation and reinforce the message that no cause or grievance justifies terrorism”. “The two sides further reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing and future cooperation to ensure a stable cyberspace environment and to prevent cyberattacks,” the statement said. It also stated that the Ministers reviewed cooperation in the Indo-

Pacific region and noted that the common principles for the region articulated in the India-US joint statement of June 2017 have been further amplified by US President Donald Trump at Danang, Vietnam on November 10, 2017, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Singapore at the Shangri-La Dialogue on June 1, 2018. While India welcomed the recent US-North Korea summit, the US welcomed India’s accession to the three export control regimes - the Australia Group, the Wassenaar Arrangement and the Missile Technology Control Regime. Washington also reiterated its support to New Delhi for its bid to become a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). China has been blocking India’s bid for membership in the NSG on the ground that for a country to become a member of the 48nation bloc, it should be a signatory to the nuclear NPT.

Energy of Asia, peace for world A total of 18 Asian records were set up at the 18th Asian Games. China once again called the shots, leading with 132 gold, 92 silver and 65 bronze medals IANS, JAKARTA

T

he 18th Asian Games came to a close at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium here but the Games will be long remembered for showcasing the energy of Asia, the drive for world peace and host Indonesia’s passion. The two-week, 40-sport Asian Games has been a great athletic success, witnessing six world records highlighted by Chinese swimmer Liu Xiang’s stunning performance in the women’s 50m backstroke. A total of 18 Asian records have also been set up at the Games. China once again called the shots at the Games, leading with 132 gold, 92 silver and 65 bronze medals, although the Asian giant sent a relatively young delegation, with 631 out of their 845-athlete squad having participated in neither the Olympics nor the Asian Games.

BRIEFS: Nadal sets up semis clash with Del Potro NEW YORK: Spain’s Rafael Nadal defeated Austria’s Dominic Thiem in an epic five-set quarter-final at the US Open tennis tournament. The reigning US Open champion and world number one endured a gruelling match against ninth-seeded Thiem, who swept the first set 6-0. Nadal mounted an impressive comeback, winning the next two sets as he got to grips with the Austrian’s power. Japan achieved better-thanexpected results at the Asiad as they wrapped up the campaign with a total of 205 medals, including 75 golds, 56 silvers, and 74

bronzes, overtaking South Korea to finish second in the tally for the first time in a decade. China, Japan and South Korea (49 golds) dominated, as always.

But several other teams closed ground on the Big Three. The Big Three were followed in the goldmedal ranking order by: Indonesia (31), Uzbekistan (21), Iran (20)

and Chinese Taipei (17). India and Kazakhstan each had 15 followed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPR Korea) and Bahrain with 12. In a latest move to thaw the relations on the troubled Korean peninsula, North Korea and South Korea formed a unified team to participate in three sports of the Games, a feat which Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah cited as an example as the strong role of sports in promoting world peace and global unity. The unified team won four medals overall, including a historic gold in dragon boat racing, which was the first gold medal by a unified Korean team at a major multisport event. The host Indonesia also made headlines this time. Fifty-six years after hosting the Asian Games for the first time, Indonesia welcomed guests from across Asia again.

4th Test: India suffer 60-run loss, concede series IANS, SOUTHAMPTON

I

ndia suffered a 60-run defeat against England in the fourth Test after being bowled out for 184 runs in their second innings on the fourth day at the Rose Bowl Cricket Stadium here on Sunday to go down 1-3 in the five-match series. Chasing 245 runs for victory, India were driven by skipper Virat Kohli (58) and Ajinkya Rahane (51) who showed a fight against the English bowlers. The duo were involved in a 101run stand for the fourth wicket and had revived India’s hopes but the hosts’ bowlers came all guns blazing in the evening session to wrap up the visiting side.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli (right) with coach Ravi Shastri.

The day, however, began the way India expected. Resuming the day at 260/8, England lost Sam Curran

(46) and Stuart Broad (0) as the hosts could add only 11 runs in about half-an-hour on Sunday.

Broad was the first to go, as he became seamer Mohammad Shami’s fourth victim of the innings. Trying to slash a wide delivery, he only managed an edge to wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant. Left-hander Curran hit off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on the leg side but his decision to take a double hurt him. Ishant Sharma made a long throw to ensure Curran fall short of the crease as England’s second innings ended at 271. With India having a 27-run first-innings lead, India needed 245 to win the match. India’s chase was wobbly from the beginning. A delivery from experienced seamer Broad kept low before rattling the stumps of Lokesh Rahul.

Stree: A gorgeous quirk-tale of mirth & scares

A

new language in the horror genre burgeons as we watch this quirky cocktail — or shall we call it a quirk-tale? — of strange eerie mysterious goings-on in a minuscule town somewhere in Madhya Pradesh. First off, the narrative acquires its judiciously-harnessed strength from the lazy serpentine locations. The congested claustrophobic gullies and lanes of Chanderi lend themselves effectively to the plot that quite literally loses it. This is a film where supernatural beliefs are dragged to the extremes of self-parody and then dragged back up panting puffing and gasping for breath. It’s a delicious voluptuous mishmash of terror and titillation all titivated in loads of guffaws. To sustain the mood of mirth during times of terror is not easy. Stree manages it. It also squeezes in a piercing message on gender dignity and women’s empowerment, proclaiming the ill treatment of women to be the root-cause of all evil perpetrated by ghoulish feminine spirits wandering aimlessly in the night. The writing in this case is clearly and literally on the wall, as every home in the spooked town has a message ‘Stree Kal Aana’ painted on the raw brick wall. Well, Kal or not, this Stree rides the train of mystery

Actors Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor at the promotion of their film ‘Stree’ in Mumbai. (Photo: IANS)

Stree moves in mysterious ways through a labyrinth of lip-smacking interludes, some razor-sharp others blunt to the point of blandness. Even when the momentum of the eerie gets overly airy, there is still enough steam in storytelling to keep us interested. with bloody-thirsty bravado. Many passages play for anti-climactic scares. And these get annoying when repeated. Even when the deadends to the frights are too frequent the film never ceases to be

fun. Barring Shraddha Kapoor who is listless pale and wan (and not necessarily because the script demands her to be these) the entire cast gets the spirit of spooked satire dead right. While Aparshakti Khurrana

has shaped into one of the strongest supporting actors of contemporary Bollywood, what appealed the most to me was this self-effacing actor’s accent. So North Indian in its wackiness, I was left decoding his words long after Khurrana finished uttering them. Pankaj Tripathi as a local scholar-exorcist with a penchant for alcohol and caller tunes that remind us of beautiful ghosts from Raj Khosla’s cinema, has the film’s best lines. Tripathy chews on them for all the meat they’ve got and spits them out with loving care. As for Rajkummar Rao, he takes ownership of the film and its peculiar flavor of fear and fun, instilling the two elements simultaneously in several scenes. I dare any other actor to have so much fun with fear. Watch him and Atul Shrivastava in the sequence where ‘Deddy’ tells son to not go to prostitutes for ‘Friendship’, but opt for self-help instead. It is priceless. Stree moves in mysterious ways through a labyrinth of lip-smacking interludes, some razor-sharp others blunt to the point of blandness. Even when the momentum of the eerie gets overly airy, there is still enough steam in the storytelling to keep us interested, if not enthralled, to the end.

He is seen in a bearded avatar as a man who seems to be on a path to do something noble for the society. early nine months before its term was to end, the Telangana Assembly was on Thursday dissolved by the Governor on a recommendation by the state cabinet. Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan accepted a resolution of the cabinet recommending dissolution of the Assembly. He asked Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his Council of Ministers to continue in office as caretaker Government. Ending the suspense, the state cabinet passed a resolution for dissolution of the Assembly at the meeting held at Pragati Bhavan, the official residence of the Chief Minister. Immediately after the cabinet meet that lasted for less than half hour, KCR, as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief is popularly known, drove to Raj Bhavan to meet the Governor.

Consider mercy plea of Rajiv Gandhi’s killer: SC

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Tamil Nadu Governor to consider the mercy petition of A.G. Perarivalan, who is serving a life term in the 1991 Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Perarivalan’s counsel told a bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Naveen Sinha and Justice K.M. Joseph that a decision was yet to be taken on his mercy petition pending for over two years. He submitted the plea to the Governor on December 30, 2015, saying he had undergone more than 24 years of solitary/single confinement. Perarivalan, among the seven convicts in the case, had sought remission/pardon from the Governor under Article 161 of the Constitution. After the court asked the Centre to take a call on Tamil Nadu’s pro-

posal to release the convicts, the central government said on August 10 in its report submitted in the court that it did not agree, holding that setting them free will set a “dangerous precedent”. “Releasing the killers of a former Prime Minister will set a very dangerous precedent. The case has been decided by various forums of judiciary and executive and the prisoners do not deserve to be set free,” the Centre contended. Releasing them will lead to “international ramifications” by other such criminals in future, it added. HYDERABAD: Telangana caretaker Chief Minister and TRS President K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday described Congress President Rahul Gandhi as the “biggest buffoon” in the country. “The whole country has seen how he went and hugged Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament and winked,” KCR told a news conference. When asked about Gandhi’s plans to extensively campaign in Telangana, the TRS chief said: “The more he comes, it will be easier for us (to win elections).” KCR said Rahul inherited the legacy of the Congress Delhi empire and hence he was appealing to the people of Telangana not to become slaves to Delhi. “The decisions of Telangana should be taken in Telangana,” he said.

course would have been conducted along with the Lok Sabha polls. The Assembly elections may be held along with four other states going to polls in December. For the last few weeks, KCR had been giving strong indications of going for early polls. He is scheduled to address a news conference later in the day where he is expected to spell out reasons for his decision. Political observers say the TRS is keen for early elections as the party believes that simultaneous elections to Assembly and Lok Sabha may not help it properly highlight welfare and developmental works undertaken during the last four years. KCR will formally launch the TRS election campaign with a public meeting at Husnabad in Siddipet district on Friday. Christened ‘Prajala Aasirwada Sabha’, this will be the first of 100 public meetings planned by TRS over the next 50 days.

‘Kerala to be provided with more aid’ IANS, NEW DELHI

F

inance Minister Arun Jaitley has assured Kerala that the Centre would provide further relief to the flood-hit state after a proper estimate is done. According to the minister, the Rs 600 crore which has been sanctioned till now by the Central government is only for interim relief purposes “when the crisis is maximum”. “We are now moving towards a stage of rehabilitation. What the Prime Minister has given is Rs 500 crore and the Home Minister has given Rs 100 crore... the Rs 600 crore is interim,” Jaitley said at a media briefing after the meeting of the Union Cabinet. “There is a mechanism that operates. For relief, you give immediate assistance, then the state makes a representation, the central team goes, along with the officers of the state, they will say how many houses destroyed, how many people lost there lives and on the basis of that they assess the damages.” The minister told reporters that one of the representations came from the state and a Central team has already gone for assessment. “We have a track record of going by the settled norms, irrespective of whether it is a NDA state or non-state, there are fixed norms, calculations are made and the money is released. There is a

process,” said the union finance minister. In addition, the minister said that banks and insurance companies have been advised to settle all insurance claims forthwith. Meanwhile, the state government announced that it won’t host any function that involves huge sums of money for a year and instead divert the amount for flood relief. The canceled events include the much-acclaimed International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), held every December, besides state school youth festivals. Officials say Kerala has suffered damage amounting to Rs 30,000 crore in the worst floods to hit the state in a century. A government order said that no government department would host any festival for a year.

The funds earmarked for all such cancelled events would be diverted to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). However, State Culture Minister A.K. Balan said there was some disconnect in the order. “There needs to be more clarity about this order and a letter has been sent to the Chief Secretary for the same. There was no decision taken by the Committee of Ministers looking into rebuilding the state,” Balan told the media. Veteran Director Kamal, who is also the chairman of the academy that organises the IFFK, said the order had come as a surprise as he had discussed about the conduct of the film festival with Balan in the morning. “We can hold this festival without any celebrations and utilize our own funds,” said Kamal.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY— A funeral home in Long Island, New York hit with a lawsuit after giving the wrong ashes to a grieving Indian American family. The Indian American family traveled thousands of miles to India to scatter the ashes provided by the Lake Ronkonkoma Moloney Funeral Home, only to discover the error. Sarup Sharma’s adult children, Susan and Sunil, were given the remains of a different man with the same last name, the report said, citing the suit filed by the surviving family members. The siblings had planned to scatter their father’s ashes along with their mother’s— who had died seven months later, in

N

September 2017— in a traditional Hindu ceremony on the Ganga River in India, according to the lawsuit filed in Nassau County Supreme Court on August 13th. In November, the funeral home reached out to Sharma’s kids and informed them that it had made a mistake by sending their father’s remains to the family of Shashi Sharma, who was no relation, according to the lawsuit, it added. The funeral home apologized and is reviewing protocol to make sure the mixup doesn’t happen again, according to spokeswoman Katherine Heaviside, the report said. Shashi Sharma’s family made a second trip to India to scatter the true remains of their relative, according to a source. The funeral home offered to pay for it, Heaviside said.

Akshaya Patra Foundation to Host Benefit Gala

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO,IL— The Chicago chapter of the Akshaya Patra Foundation is excited to host a benefit Gala on September 21st at 6pm at the Meadows club. This year, the Akshaya Patra keynote speaker is Mr. Manu Shah, a founder of MSI international, a natural stone wholesaler in the US. The Bhuj Akshaya Patra kitchen was donated entirely by Manubhai. This year, the gala reception will be attended by 600 of Akshaya Patra’s generous donors and supporters. Attendees will be entertained by Golden Melody Makers, an outstanding singing group from India. Akshaya Patra Chicago has been actively growing among the Indian community for the

C

last several years. Last year, for the first time, the Chicago chapter sponsored 10,000 meals for children. This year, the goal is to sponsor 15,000 meals. We urge all of you to help us to reach our goal for this worthy cause. Akshaya Patra is the largest NGO-run midday meals in the world, serving 1.7 million meals in 14250 government schools in 13 states in India, often being the only meal of the day for the child. It serves as critical intervention addressing both hunger and education. Many parents send their children to school to get nutritional meals, but this also serves as means to receive education for their children. Further details can be found on our brochure and on our website. Please help us reach our goal by supporting the Akshaya Patra cause.

St. Louis Celebrates Medhavadhanam 2018

BY A STAFF WRITER T.LOUIS, MO— On Saturday, August 11, 2018, the temple was filled with energetic kids ranging from elementary to high school. The kids appeared excited to show their talent. Mr. Kantharao Minnaganti, on behalf of temple committee, introduced Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club to the audience. He then introduced Sreenivasa Ainapurapu to the audience. Later he handed over the control to Sruthi Manasa Ainapurapu to preside the event for that evening. Sruthi Manasa gave the historic background of Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club, Sanghamitra, and Sreenivasa Rao Ainapurapu’s as well as their activities and involvement in the community. Sanghamitra has also been extending its support through monetary donations to nonprofit organizations and the needy. This year, Sanghamitra is donating little over $5000 to half a dozen organizations.

S

During his speech, Sreenivasa Rao acknowledged the various organizations in the St. Louis area and how they have been working hand in hand to further their cause. He highlighted the importance of teamwork, and how it is important for the progress of our community. He also encouraged all parents to be part of any organization they believe in, and become active with community events. He noted that remaining active and involved is important for the development and wellbeing of children. To conclude the program, Sruthi Manasa expressed her gratitude, on behalf of Sanghamitra and Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club, to the Hindu temple of St. Louis for allowing the team to use the facility for organizing Medhavadhanam. She also thanked the volunteers who dedicated their time to arrange this event. Sreenivasa Rao finally expressed his gratitude to his family members, who supported him throughout the summer and during Medhavadhanam.

Indian American Financial Adviser Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud Bal Vihar and St. Louis Arts Museum Celebrate India’s I-Day

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL— Indian American financial adviser in Chicago Vishal Savla has pleaded guilty to defrauding investors. Savla, 37, admitted to tricking investors and family members out of more than $2 million. His guilty plea was to a single federal charge of wire fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. While he was running VCAP LLC, a Chicago-based investment fund that was said to trade in equities, options and futures contracts, Savla told clients that a computer trading error led to major losses, the attorney’s office said. Later, he admitted in federal court that the true cause of losses was a result of poor trading practices. From 2014 up until earlier this year, Savla raised about $2.3 million from investors after promising substantial returns, it said. His investment fund was “largely

C

unsuccessfully” during that stretch, losing more than 95 percent of its investments. Savla kept soliciting and accepting new investments while sending clients phony account statements that showed large profits instead of substantial losses, according to his plea agreement. In December 2016, Savla claimed that a keyboard input error commonly known as a “fat finger trade” caused his fund to drop by roughly 90 percent in a single day, prosecutors said. As part of his plea deal, Savla admitted that there was no such error, and that trading losses spurred the dramatic decline. Savla also acknowledged that he borrowed cash from family and friends to repay his investors, the plea agreement said. Savla admitted to using $260,000 of investor money to finance his living expenses, the release added. Savla’s sentencing is scheduled for January 9th. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

BY A STAFF WRITER T. LOUIS, MO— Every year, St. Louis Arts Museum (SLAM) showcases their “Passport to India” exhibition, and Bal Vihar of St. Louis has been an integral part of it. On August 19, 2018, both organizations came together once again to celebrate India’s 72nd Independence Day and showcased highlights of Indian culture. The event started off with a flag hoisting ceremony, with the Bal Vihar student Orchestra playing national anthem of United States and India. SLAM was filled with lots of visitors, young and old, alike wanting to know and experience India’s culture and heritage. The volunteers showcased traditional arts and culture of India. This included visitors having an opportunity to try Mehendi (Henna) and view displays of various arts and culture, including colorful Indian attires and artifacts. The display also included a

S

performance of a centuries old classical Indian dance called “Bharatnatyam”. The event followed into the theater where various dances representing the diversity and variety of India was at display. The performers were dressed in traditional Indian attire representing the different regions of India. Bal Vihar President, Dr. Sudhir Brahambhatt spoke at the occasion thanking the visitors for the opportunity to showcase India and its culture. He also shared the growth of India and its influence across the world. Thanks to St. Louis Arts Museum for their “Passport To India”, the Indian community received yet another opportunity to show the history of India and the variety in its culture and heritage. Bal Vihar has been serving Greater St. Louis community for over 25 years, instilling cultural values in the leaders of next generation while helping them discover their identity.

Tired of Dizziness or Imbalance? You are Not Alone! We Can Help You! Physical Therapy Solutions (PTS) is the region’s #1 specialist for vestibular and balance disorders and the only private practice in Chicagoland’s northwest suburbs utilizing NeuroCom’s NASA-based Smart Equi Test System. Rupangi Patel is the co-founder and CEO of Physical Therapy Solutions (PTS), located in a state-of-the-art facility near Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall. "Our goal is to help people get back to their daily life as quickly as possible,” says Rupangi. She has been serving the northwest suburbs since 1990 and has worked with many of the leading area hospitals. Her passion for helping people led her to start her own clinic in 2005.

How does testing on the SMART Equi System evaluate my balance? Balance is a very complex interaction between the sensory system and brain. The Equi Test System helps us determine if there is a problem in the interaction between your sensory system – eyes, ears, sensation in your feet and joints – and the brain, which coordinates your movements. This equipment also allows us to compare your performance to that of other people your age who don’t have balance or vestibular issues. What does therapy consist of once my balance issues are determined? Our specialists set up a rehabilitation protocol for your functional limitation and quantify performance over time. This means better outcomes that carry over to daily living. The therapy consists of specific balance exercises, including head movements, changing surfaces,

Utilizing the latest NASA-based technology and treatments, the PTS team is dedicated to providing the best care available to help your body regain health and well-being. At PTS we provide orthopedic, neurological and vestibular rehabilitation and have helped thousands of patients in the community. What is the SMART Equi Test System and how can it help me? The system was initially developed for NASA to evaluate how space flight affects balance control and inner ear function in astronauts. This equipment allows our rehab professionals to perform six tests that measure body movement and sway during different purposeful movements or when standing still.

How many treatments will q it take for me to see an improvement with my balance? Treatment requirements are determined with an evaluation q of your condition. Most of 4 our patients have seen a significant improvement in as little as one to two weeks.

Did You Know? Falling, fear of falling and lack of balance is not a result of age. Good balance is normal at any age.

Have you fallen in the past year? Do you take medications for two or more of the following: heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, anxiety or depression? Have you had a stroke or other neurological problem affecting your balance? Do you use a walker or wheelchair, or do you need assistance to get around? Do you experience a numbness or loss of sensation in your legs and/or feet? If you answered “YES” to one or more of these questions, you may have a balance problem.
