Alderman Ameya Pawar BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO,IL— Ameya Pawar, who had previously run for Illinois governor before dropping out of the race last year, now has his sights fixed on becoming the treasurer of Chicago, according to reports. Pawar, the 47th Ward alderman, announced on October 29th that he is seeking the treasurer post, which is up for election February 2019. His announcement followed the heels of treasurer Kurt Summers’ choice to not seek reelection. Should he win the election, Pawar, noted as a liberal or progressive, said he plans to launch a “people’s public bank and loan capital to expand neighborhood businesses, finance affordable housing, fund new infrastructure and refinance student loans to help Chicagoans stay in the city while attracting new ones,” the report said. “I am running to be your next city treasurer to enact a bold progressive agenda to harness the power of 2.7 million Chicagoans and invest in our neighborhoods and each other,” he said. Pawar ended a run for Illinois governor due to a lack of funds last October He was earlier listed among the potential candidates to run for mayor in the wake of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s decision to not seek re-election, the report said.

Deadlock looms in split Congress A big Blue Wave of Democratic support that could destabilize Trump did not quite materialize as he appeared to have held onto his base as his suburban support bled ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

P

olitical deadlock and a series of hobbling investigations loomed over the US with the Republican Party losing control of the House of Representatives even as President Donald Trump avoided a rout in the mid-term elections billed as a referendum by retaining control of the Senate. A big Blue Wave of Democratic support that could totally destabilize Trump did not quite materialize as he appeared to have held onto his base, even though his suburban support bled. But the split control of the Congress will put a brake on Trump’s conservative agenda and increase pressure on him and those close to him through a newly empowered Democratic Party’s promised wave of investigations starting with the revival of the Congressional probe into the alleged Russian manipulation of the 2016 election. Facing the challenge, Trump tweeted: “Two can play the game” and threatened counter investigations of Democrats. The Democrats had sealed their control of the House - the lower chamber of the Congress - winning 223 seats of the 535 while Republicans retained the Senate with at least 51 seats of the 100. Trump went into the midterms with a strong economy — a 3.7 percent unemployment rate, the lowest in about 50 years, and a booming stock market — and for-

eign policy gains in forcing trade deals with Canada and Mexico and a nuclear retreat by North Korea. That muted some of the opposition and the Democratic Party’s ambivalence towards illegal immigration as a caravan of several thousands of Central Americans marching under the flags of Guatemala and Honduras towards the US roused Trump’s base. But his personal style of intimidation and deeply divisive rhetoric turned off many voters and brought on a big turnout of voters in support of the Democratic Party.

“When Democrats win, and we will win tonight, we will have a Congress that is open, transparent and accountable to the American people,” said Nancy Pelosi, who is expected to the reclaim the speakership. Trump countered with a challenge of his own in a tweet” “If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else.”

WASHINGTON: The White House has withdrawn the permanent credential from CNN journalist Jim Acosta for confronting US President Donald Trump at a press conference following the mid-term results. The CNN journalist at the White House on Wednesday engaged in a tense tug-of-war with Trump, who after answering several of his questions, said “That’s enough. Put down the mic... I tell you what, CNN should be ashamed of itself, having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person.” A White House aide immediately approached Acosta and unsuccessfully tried to grab the microphone from him, Efe news reported. Hours later, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders tweeted: “As a result of today’s incident, the White House is suspending the hard pass of the reporter involved until further notice.” Acosta was asked by an agent of the US Secret Service for his accreditation after leaving the presidential building, according to a video of the moment shared by the journalist on Twitter. “President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his administration.

CNN journalist Jim Acosta.

“We will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern. This conduct is absolutely unacceptable,” was the explanation given. “The fact that CNN is proud of the way their employee behaved is not only disgusting, it’s an example of their outrageous disregard for everyone, including young women, who work in this administration,” Sanders said. In response, Acosta said, “This is a lie.” The incident that triggered the White House decision occurred during the press conference with Trump.

Mueller investigation as well as his connections to a witness in that investigation, Sam Clovis, a former Trump campaign aide. In 2014, Whitaker was the chairman of Clovis’ unsuccessful campaign to become Iowa state treasurer. “Given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation, Whitaker should recuse himself from its oversight for the duration of his time as acting attorney general,” Democratic party Senate leader Chuck Schumer said. House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said: “It is impossible to read Sessions’ firing as anything other than another blatant attempt by Trump to undermine and end Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation.”

Ram temple issue resurfaces The Uttar Pradesh CM inspected the site where a 150 meter tall statue of Lord Ram would be installed, even as he revealed plans to build a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya

Pushing for ordinance on Ram temple incorrect: Athawale

IANS, AYODHYA

U

ttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said the federal government was working on “various options within the ambit of the Constitution to build a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya”. On the second-day of his visit to the temple town of Ayodhya, the monk-politician prayed at the Hanumangarhi temple and declared that Ayodhya was the abode of “Ram Lalla’ and that there “was a temple (at Ayodhya) and will always be there”. He also visited the makeshift Ram Lalla temple at the disputed site where once stood the Babri mosque which was razed in 1992. Adityanath also met seers at the Digambar Akhara, visited the Saryu ghat, Sugreev Fort and also met Mahant Nritya Gopal Das. The Chief Minister also inspected the site where a 150 meter tall statue of Lord Ram would be installed on a 50 feet pedestal. “We have grand plans for Ayodhya and we are working in that direction” he later told reporters. He also announced that a shelter home for widows and orphaned children would be set up in Ayodhya. On Tuesday, the state govern-

BRIEFS Nirav Modi declared absconder MUMBAI: A Gujarat court on Thursday declared fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi as a “proclaimed absconder” in a Rs 520 million customs duty evasion case filed in March and ordered him to appear in court on November 15. The declaration made under Section 82 of the Criminal Procedure Code could make it difficult for Nirav Modi to secure an anticipatory bail.

‘Modi playing with economic sovereignty’ NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday accused the Narendra Modi government of playing with India’s economic sovereignty by trying to demolish the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and seeking transfer of Rs 3.6 trillion or one-third of the central bank’s reserves. The Congress said if the “unprecedented” demand by the Modi government was allowed to materialize it would tantamount to the “great Indian bank robbery”. —IANS

ment had rolled out a never-seenbefore spectacle of lights on the ghats of the holy river Saryu where more than 300,000 earthen lamps were lit up. The First Lady of South Korea was present at the event. She also witnessed the change of name of a district: Faizabad will now be known as Ayodhya. The Chief Minister said the identity of the district of Faizabad was Lord Ram and he declared thereafter that the Faizabad district would now be known as Ayodhya.

KOLKATA: Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale on Monday said bringing ordinance for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya will not be right as the matter is sub judice. Acknowledging the demand of the Hindu community to build a Ram temple in his birthplace, the minister said the construction of the temple should be done after taking the local Muslim community into confidence. “I do not think bringing ordinance on the temple will be the right deci-

sion. We should wait for the Supreme Court’s verdict. People should accept the apex court judgement,” said Athawale, the president of Republican Party of India. “The demand of the Hindu society to build a temple of Lord Ram in Ayodhya is legitimate and that should be accepted. But the Muslim community living there should also be taken into confidence. The government should look for a solution through meaningful discussion with the Muslims living there,” he said.

Mandir pitch to hide government’s ‘all-round failure’: CPI-M NEW DELHI: The CPI-M on Monday said that the RSS-BJP was raising the Ram temple issue just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections to deepen communal polarization and hide the “allround failure” of the Modi government. The Communist Party of IndiaMarxist (CPI-M) expressed concern at “alarming statements” being made by BJP-RSS leaders and Union Ministers threatening to create “a 1992-

like situation” that led to the razing of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. These, the party said, were posing “grave dangers” to the country’s unity. “The BJP had officially stated that it shall abide by the apex court judgment. It is now engaging in a volte face as the general elections are drawing close. By whipping up passions over the Ayodhya dispute and raising the demand for the construc-

tion of a temple, RSS and BJP aim to sharpen communal polarization in the country, which has horrendous consequences,” it said. “The effort to consolidate the Hindutva communal vote bank in the runup to the elections, apart from seeking to divert people’s attention away from the all-round failure of the Modi government, poses grave dangers to our country’s unity and integrity,” it said.

olding demonetization an “ill-fated” and “illthought” exercise, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said the scars and wounds of the decision are only getting more visible with time and its deeper ramifications are still unravelling. On the second anniversary of the demonetization decision, he also asked the government not to indulge in any further unorthodox, short-term economic measures that could cause more uncertainty in the economy and financial markets. Singh said November 8 was a day to remember how economic misadventures can roil the nation for a long time while asking the government to restore certainty and visibility in economic policies. “Today marks the second anniversary of the ill-fated and illthought demonetization... The havoc that it unleashed on the Indian economy and society is now evident to everyone. “It is often said that time is a

great healer. But unfortunately, in the case of demonetization, the scars and wounds of demonetization are only getting more visible with time,” he said in a statement. Singh said that beyond the steep drop in headline GDP growth numbers after demonetization, the deeper ramifications of note ban were still unravelling. “Small and medium businesses that are the cornerstone of India’s economy are yet to recover from

the demonetization shock,” he added. “Notebandi (note ban) impacted every single person, regardless of age, gender, religion, occupation or creed. “I urge the government to restore certainty and visibility in economic policies. Today is a day to remember how economic misadventures can roil the nation for a long time and understand that economic policymaking should be

handled with thought and care.” He said that even after two years, the economy was yet to “recover from the demonetization shock”. That the step had “a direct impact on employment as the economy continues to struggle to create enough new jobs for our youth”. Singh said the financial markets were volatile as the liquidity crisis wrought by demonetization was taking its eventual toll on infrastructure lenders and non-bank financial services firms. “We are yet to understand and experience the full impact of the demonetization exercise. With a depreciating currency and rising global oil prices, macroeconomic headwinds are also starting to blow now. “It is therefore prudent to not resort to further unorthodox, shortterm economic measures that can cause any more uncertainty in the economy and financial markets.” In a sudden move that took everyone by surprise, Modi on this day in 2016 announced a ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

Major Punjab parties hit by ‘apology’ bug The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is, perhaps, the most haunted by the apology word apart from the ruling Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Sulabh International Founder Bindeshwar Pathak with widows during a programme organized to celebrate Diwali, at Gopinath temple in Vrindavan.

P

olitics in Punjab is in “apology” mode these days. The three major parties — the ruling Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — have been bit by the apology bug. The SAD is, perhaps, the most haunted by the apology word. Its political move to get the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion, to accept the apology of controversial Dera Sacha Sauda sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in 2015 has come back to haunt the party and its top leadership. The move, at that time, made good political sense to SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal as assembly elections in Punjab were due in early 2017 and the sect chief could influence votes in the Majha belt (the area south of Sutlej river known for its highlyfertile soil). The SAD was in power (2007-2017) at that time with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its junior partner. The sect chief had a major runin with the Sikh religion, especially institutions and organizations like the Akal Takht and SAD in 2007 when he was accused of trying to imitate the 10th Sikh guru, Gobind Singh. The Akali Dal did not benefit much from the apology episode as, for the first time, it finished third in the assembly polls held in February 2017. The apology for the sect chief

and subsequent events of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib across Punjab in 2015 put the SAD in a spot then and continues to haunt the party even now. Some Sikh organizations and hardliners have now taken a tough stand against the party. The ruling Congress party has also been hit by the apology syndrome after senior minister Charanjit Singh Channi was accused by a senior woman IAS officer of sexual harassment, as he sent her an indecent message on her mobile phone. The matter reached the door of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who asked the minister to apologize to the officer. Channi continues to face pressure from the opposition, which is demanding his dismissal from the cabinet, saying that if a minister can do such a thing with an IAS officer, how would other women be safe in Punjab. The AAP, which emerged as the main opposition party in the assembly polls last year, too has not been left out of the apology entanglement. AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who, along with other AAP leaders, had, in the run-up to the assembly polls, often accused former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia of running a drug racket, ended up tendering an apology to get over with a criminal defamation case filed by him.

All 4 Indian-American members of Congress re-elected At least six Indian-American Democrats elected to State legislatures for the first time ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

A

ll the four Indian-American Democrat members of the House of Representatives were re-elected in Tuesday's election and a member of the community won the Attorney General's position in Wisconsin state. Raja Krishnamoorthi, who represents a constituency near Chicago in Illinois, won about 66 percent of the votes to defeat his Indian-American challenger J.D. Diganvker of

the Republican Party. The other House candidates reelected were Pramila Jayapal from Washington State, and Ro Khanna and Ami Bera from California. Together with the only Senator of Indian descent, Kamala Harris, they make up what they themselves jokingly call "The Samosa Caucus," Harris won from California in 2016 did not face a re-election as she has a six-year term. None of the other Indian Americans running for Congress made it. In a sign of the Indian-American

community's growing political involvement, Democrat Josh Kaul was elected Attorney General of Wisconsin in a tight race with a margin of about 1 percent of the votes, although his victory is likely to be challenged by his Republican rival. He will be the second IndianAmerican Attorney General. The first is Gurbir Grewal, a turbanwearing Sikh, in New Jersey where Attorneys General are not elected but appointed by the Governor. Kaul is the fourth Indian-American to win a state-wide election,

which sets the stage for him to run for other higher offices. The first was Piyush Bobby Jindal, elected Louisiana governor in 2007 who was followed by Nikki Haley, elected South Carolina governor in 2010; both are Republicans. The third is Harris. Shiva Ayyadurai, who ran as an Independent against Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, lost badly, getting only about 3.5 percent of the votes. Warren has claimed Native American or American Indian ancestry and Ayyadurai

ran a controversial campaign with the headline, "Only a real Indian can defeat a fake Indian'. At least seven other Indians ran for Congress on Democratic Party tickets but lost according to a database of the Indian American Impact Fund and Desis for Progress, which had endorsed them. Harry Arora, who ran for the House as a Republican from Connecticut, lost. The database also showed that six Indian-American Democrats had been elected to State legislatures for the first time.

Indian-American charged US journalist alleges rape by Akbar with H-1B visa, mail fraud IANS, NEW DELHI

WASHINGTON: An Indian-origin man has been charged in the US with H-1B visa and mail fraud, officials said. Kishore Kumar Kavuru, 46, was arrested last week and was presented before US Magistrate Judge Susan van Keulen, the US Department of Justice said in a press release. He was charged with 10 counts of visa fraud and 10 counts of mail fraud in connection with a scheme to maintain a pool of foreign workers for the clients of Kavuru’s consulting companies. If convicted, Kavuru faces the sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 for each count of visa fraud. The defendant also faces up to 20 years in jail and $250,000 for each count of mail

fraud, federal prosecutors said. According to the indictment, Kavuru, a resident of Sunnyvale, California, held himself out as a staffing specialist for technology firms based in Santa Clara County and elsewhere seeking to fill temporary positions with foreign workers. Since at least as early as 2007, Kavuru was the owner and Chief Executive Officer of four consulting companies — Scopus Consulting Group, Inc.; ITECH Analyst Corp; Infinity Methods Corp; and Orian Engineers Incorporated. The indictment described how Kavuru used the consulting companies to process and submit fraudulent applications for foreign workers to obtain permission to work in the US under the H-1B visa program.

M

.J. Akbar, journalistturned-politician, who quit as Union Minister after charges of sexual harassment by many journalists, has now been accused of rape by US journalist Pallavi Gogoi. Akbar said they had a "consensual relationship" even as his wife accused Gogoi of lying. In a first person account in The Washington Post published last week, Gogoi, now the Chief Business Editor at National Public Radio, gave a detailed account of how she was allegedly raped by Akbar and narrated her ordeal of working under him when he was the Editor of The Asian Age years ago. After two incidents in Delhi and Mumbai where Akbar "molested and sexually assaulted her", Gogoi, now a US citizen, narrated how she was raped in a hotel in Jaipur. "In his hotel room, even though I fought him (Akbar), he was physically more powerful. He ripped off my clothes and raped me. Instead of reporting him to the

Pallavi Gogoi.

police, I was filled with shame," wrote Gogoi. She said after the Jaipur incident, "his grip over me got tighter". With over a dozen journalists accusing him of sexual harassment and assault, Akbar quit as Minister of State for External Affairs on October 17. Denying the charges, he filed a criminal defamation case against journalist Priya Ramani who was the first to accuse him. Gogoi also attacked the BJP for letting Akbar continue as its mem-

ber. Later, when Gogoi was posted in London, she felt the abuse would stop because she would be far away from Delhi. But "the truth was that he was sending me away so I could have no defenses and he could prey on me whenever he visited the city where I would be posted". She said she did not bring up Akbar in conversations as "I've always felt that Akbar is above the law and justice doesn't apply to him. "But I am writing this because I know what it is like to be victimized by powerful men like Akbar. I am writing this to support the many women who have come out to tell their truth," she added. Both Akbar and his wife Mallika trashed Gogoi's allegations. Akbar claimed his relationship with Gogoi was "consensual". "Somewhere around 1994, Gogoi and I entered into consensual relationship that spanned several months. This relationship gave rise to talk and would later cause strife in my home life as well. This consensual relationship ended, perhaps not on best note," he said.

Trump-Putin meet ‘unlikely’ The US President is likely to meet Kim Jong-un ‘early next year’

Pompeo to meet top N.Korean official

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has said he will have lunch with Russian President Vladimir Putin among other leaders during his planned trip to Paris but no meeting was expected. Trump also revealed that he is likely to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un “early next year”. “We will be having a lunch, but I’m sure many people will be there,” said Trump on Wednesday at a press conference at the White House when asked if he will meet Putin in Paris, where over 60 leaders were expected to convene on Sunday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the World War I, Xinhua reported. “I don’t think we have anything scheduled in Paris,” said Trump, explaining that he didn’t think there would be time set for any meeting given his short stay there. “We will very shortly meet again at the G20. And that’s where we were actually looking forward to meet,” Trump added. The Kremlin announced earlier on Wednesday that Putin and Trump will meet at a short working lunch in the Elysee Palace, with longer and more comprehensive talks expected at a summit of the Group of 20 countries at the end of this month in Argentina.

TOKYO: US Vice President Mike Pence is set to visit Japan next week and discuss issues related to North Korea with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, it was announced here on Thursday. Pence will stop in Japan on his way to Singapore, where he will participate in a summit of the Associa-

tion of Southeast Asian Nations, which will begin on Tuesday, Efe news reported. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga confirmed Pence’s visit to Tokyo and his meeting with Abe next Tuesday before the US leader leaves for Singapore on the same day. —IANS

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to New York on Thursday to meet a top North Korean official, the State Department has announced. Pompeo and North Korean general Kim Yong-chol, “will discuss making progress on all four pillars of the Singapore Summit joint statement, including achieving the final, fully verified denuclearization of (North Korea)”, State Department spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, said on Monday. Pompeo, who will be accompanied by US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun, on Sunday played down North Korea’s recent threat to resume its nuclear programme if Washington does not make concessions in the bilateral dialogue between the two nations, reports Efe news.

Trump said that he expected to meet Kim Jong-un again “some time early next year,” but insisted that the US is “in no rush” after talks between his top diplomat and a senior North Korean envoy were postponed. “We think it’s going fine. We are

in no rush,” said Trump, commenting on current bilateral negotiations. Trump’s remarks came less than a day after the US State Department announced that a scheduled high-level meeting between the two sides has been postponed.

The expected Thursday meeting in New York between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee, “will now take place at a later date,” Heather Nauert, the department spokesper-

16 Talibans killed in Afghanistan KABUL: Afghan forces killed 16 Taliban militants and injured 19 others while evicting them from several villages in Dand-e-Ghori area in Baghlan province, police said Thursday. “The security forces have recaptured several villages including the main base of Taliban rebels over the past four days,” police chief Ekramudin Sari told Xinhua news agency.

Dand-e-Ghori was captured by Taliban two years ago and since then has been regarded as a Taliban stronghold in the northern Baghlan province. The ongoing operations against the Taliban in Dand-e-Ghori would last until the area was cleansed of the insurgents, Sari said. Taliban militants were yet to comment on the development.

Asia Bibi still in Pakistan: Government ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi, who was released from prison a day earlier after being acquitted of blasphemy charges, has not fled the country, the government said on Thursday. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Faisal said that Bibi was still in Pakistan, denying rumors that she had already left after the furore caused by her release on Wednesday night from a prison in Multan, where she spent eight years on death row. Bibi, a mother-of-five, was convicted in 2010 of insulting the Prophet

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Muhammad during a row with neighbors. Earlier reports said that she left the prison on Wednesday night and was flown to an “unknown destination”. Faisal did not provide more details about the woman, whose acquittal on October 31 triggered widespread protests led by the hardline Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). “There is no truth in reports of her leaving the country -- it is fake news,” Faisal told Dawn NewsTV. —IANS

The objective of the meeting would be to prepare for a second summit between the leaders of both countries, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, to resume Pyongyang’s denuclearization talks that began during the historic June meeting in Singapore. Trump has expressed his willingness to schedule the second summit soon, but his National Security Adviser John Bolton, recently pointed out that the meeting could be delayed to the beginning of 2019, which would delay the dialogue process. Pompeo visited Pyongyang a month ago to prepare for that summit and met Kim Jong-un, but gave no sign that the meeting had produced great progress towards a second meeting of the leaders. —IANS

son, said in a statement on Wednesday. Pompeo himself revealed in a Sunday interview that he expected some “real progress” in talks with Kim, including “an effort to make sure that the summit between the two leaders can take place.”

India escapes US sanctions on Iran oil ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

U

S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Monday that Washington was exempting India from the sanctions on importing oil from Iran. He said the US will continue to negotiate with India and the seven other countries receiving the sixmonth exemption to get them to cut their Iranian imports to zero. The other countries receiving the exemptions Pompeo announced at a news conference with foreign correspondents in Washington were China, Greece, Italy, Turkey, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that his department was imposing sanctions on 700 individuals, entities, aircraft and ships. In July, US President Donald Trump announced he was pulling out of the nuclear deal signed in 2015 by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, Germany and the

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (Photo: State Dept./IANS)

European Union with Iran to end its nuclear weapons programme. Trump said the sanctions that had been lifted after the agreement would be reimposed and the oil trade would be targeted starting Monday. Pompeo said that an important reason for the reimposition of the sanctions was Iran’s promotion of terrorism and that it was aimed at curbing its “revolutionary” policies. Pompeo said the payments made

by the oil importers under the exemptions would be put in a special account from which Iran could only make payments for purchases for humanitarian programmes. India imported from Iran nearly 10 per cent of the total of 220 million metric tonnes of crude oil it imported during 2017-18. Since the reimposition of sanctions were announced, India has been cutting back on the Iranian imports.

JD(S)-Cong jolt to BJP in Karnataka Hailing the 4-1 victory in the by-elections, the Karnataka Chief Minister called for opposition parties to unite under the leadership of Congress President Rahul Gandhi IANS, BENGALURU

I

n a stunning blow to the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the JD-S-Congress coalition on Tuesday worsted the saffron party 4-1 in the Karnataka by-elections, winning two Lok Sabha and two Assembly constituencies, while conceding only the Shimoga parliamentary seat. In what was considered the semifinal ahead of the next year’s general elections, it was a resounding victory for the ruling coalition in just six months after the May 12 assembly elections, which had returned a hung verdict, forcing the Congress and Janata Dal-Secular to come together to form a coalition government on May 23. Hailing the victory, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy called for opposition parties to unite under the leadership of Congress President Rahul Gandhi to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party in the next year’s Lok Sabha elections, as people were looking for an alternative. While the JD-S and the Congress won the Mandya and Bellary (ST) Lok Sabha seats, they also bagged the Ramanagaram and Jamkhandi Assembly seats. The Congress scored a major victory wresting the BJP’s citadel in Bellary (reserved) Lok Sabha seat, where its candidate V.S. Ugrappa

defeated BJP’s J. Shantha by a margin of 2,43,161 votes. Ugrappa polled 6,28,365 votes against 3,85,204 secured by Shantha, sister of BJP leader B. Sriramulu, a close associate of the controversial mining Reddy brothers. The by-election was held in the Lok Sabha constituency, which was a BJP bastion since 2004, after Sriramulu resigned following his election to the state Assembly from Molakalmuru (reserved) seat in the

adjacent Chitradurga district in May. Bellary in the southern state’s northwest region shot into national fame when then Congress president Sonia Gandhi won in the 1999 midterm Lok Sabha elections, defeating BJP’s Sushma Swaraj. Sonia, however, resigned from Bellary within weeks to retain the Rai Bareily Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh as she had contested from both the constituencies.

The BJP had pulled all stops during the campaigning to ensure a victory for Shantha, who represented the constituency from 2009-14. In the JD-S stronghold of Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, its candidate L. Shivarame Gowda won by a huge margin of 3,24,943 votes over BJP’s Siddaramaiah. Gowda polled 5,69,347 votes against 2,44,404 by the latter. The vacancy was caused by JD-S C. Puttaraju, who resigned on being

elected to the assembly from Melukote in Mandya district in the May 12 state polls. The BJP, however, managed to win the Shimoga Lok Sabha seat where its former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s son B.Y. Raghavendra defeated JD-S nominee Madhu Bangarappa, son of former chief minister late S. Bangarappa, by 52,148 votes majority. Raghavendra polled 5,43,306 votes against 4,91,158 by Madhu. Yeddyaruappa resigned from Shimoga on getting elected to the assembly from the Shikaripura segment in the same district in the Malnad region, causing the vacancy. In the two assembly by-polls, the ruling alliance scored a resounding victory. The prestigious Ramnagaram seat went to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha, who won on the JD-S ticket by a huge margin of 1,09,137 votes. The 55-year-old Anitha defeated BJP’s L. Chandrashekar, who quit the party and rejoined the Congress on November 1. His nomination, however, remained since the final date of withdrawal was October 20. In the Jamkhandi assembly constituency, Congress candidate Anand Siddu Nyamagouda, son of former Union Minister Siddu Nyamagouda, defeated BJP’s Shrikant Kulkarni by 39,480 votes.

Sabarimala protesters target women, police book 200 IANS, SABARIMALA

‘Sangh Parivar took over Sabarimala’

S

abarimala protesters on Tuesday raged, intimidated and sent back at least one woman from the hitherto banned age group of 10-50 years as they refused to allow them to break the tradition. Police registered cases against 200 protesters. The Kerala unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the way the pilgrims had to go without water and other basic facilities. After the Lord Ayyappa temple opened on Monday at 5 p.m for the special one-day session amid tight security, there were violent protests by devotees late in the night and early on Tuesday as they saw women from the banned age group approaching the shrine. Two women on Tuesday were apprehended on their way through Pamba and threatened after devotees found they were without the holy kit (Irumudi Kettu). Shouting Ayyappa slogans, the protesters stopped them from

advancing any further. This was despite the fact that they were above 50 years, the police said. It was not until their leaders announced on megaphone that the protests ended. Later, the women were helped to complete their darshan and perform puja at the hilltop temple. Speaking to the media, senior RSS activist Valsan Thillenkeri

from Kannur who was seen speaking on the megaphone standing near the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, said he came here as a pilgrim. “When I went up 18 steps to the temple and prayed, I heard a noise and saw a commotion. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sangh Parivar virtually took over the Sabarimala temple during the 24 hours it opened while the police were mere spectators, the Congress said on Wednesday. Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala told reporters Wednesday: “The government and police were an abject failure as BJP and RSS activists had the final say in the temple town till 10 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday) when the temple closed after a day. “The police were mere spectators while these forces reigned supreme at the temple,” he added. The right-wing groups had made it clear that they would not allow the entry of women in the age group of 10 to 50 though the Supreme Court on September 28 had ruled that the shrine must be opened to women from all age groups. —IANS

ple would be broken,” said Thillenkeri at the temple town. The first protests were witnessed late on Monday, when a 30-yearold woman along with her husband and children was stopped. Following the violent outbursts, the woman retreated. She was sent back home along with her family early on Tuesday under police security. Although the Kerala Police has literally taken over Sabarimala posting a dozen women officials over 50 years of age near the shrine, there has not been any woman devotee inside the sanctum sanctorum from the hitherto banned age group despite the Pinarayi Vijayan government promising to implement the September 28 Supreme Court verdict. The police have registered cases against 200 people for creating trouble in the temple compound. According to the available figures, close to 15,000 pilgrims had taken the pathway to the temple hilltop, compared with less than 1,000 devotees the same day last year.

A

n all-round show guided India to a thumping 71-run victory over West Indies in the second contest of the three-match T20 international series at the newly inaugurated AB Vajpayee Cricket Stadium here this week. It was a completely one-sided affair as the hosts dominated the visitors in every department of the game and with the thumping win, India also took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the rubber. After Rohit Sharma took every West Indian bowler to the cleaners to bring up his fourth T20 ton as

Shuttlers Sindhu, Srikanth advance FUZHOU (CHINA): Star Indian shuttlers P.V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the next round, defeating their opponents in the China Open here on Thursday. It was a cakewalk for World No. 2 Sindhu as she won her women’s singles tie against Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-12, 21-15 in straight games. Srikanth beat Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto 10-21, 21-9, 21-9 in a match which lasted 45 minutes. Sindhu had no problems in outplaying her opponent. Her swift court movements and smashes saw her overpowering Ongbamrungphan in just 37 minutes of play while Srikanth had to struggle to register a come-from-behind victory. Third seed Sindhu will face eighth seed He Bingjiao of China while fifth seed Srikanth will face fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the next round. — IANS

India put a mammoth 196-run target before the visitors, the bowlers also rose to the occasion to restrict the opponents to 124/9 in the allotted 20 overs. Chasing the huge target, the visitors were off to a poor start as openers Shai Hope (6) and Shimron Hetmyer (15) were packed back by Khaleel Ahmed as the West Indies’ scorecard read 33/2 in 5.2 overs. With the addition of another 15 runs in the visitors’ score, Kuldeep Yadav struck twice in his first over to dismiss Darren Bravo (23) and Nicholas Pooran (4) in the eighth over. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar also

joined the party to pick up the wicket of Denesh Ramdin (10), leaving West Indies reeling at 81/6 in 13.4 overs. A fine throw by Krunal Pandya in the very next ball saw incoming batsman Fabian Allen failing in making his ground as he departed without any contribution. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar then scalped one wicket each to dismantle West Indies’ lower order before skipper Carlos Brathwaite, who remained unbeaten, and Keemo Paul chipped in with 15 and 20 runs respectively as the visitors somehow managed to reach the three-digit mark. West Indies could only manage

to reach 124 runs losing nine wickets in 20 overs as the visitors lost the T20I series too, with one match to go. For India, Bhuvneshwar, Bumrah, Khaleel and Kuldeep bagged two wickets each. Earlier, Rohit became the leading Indian scorer in Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) as he cracked an unbeaten hundred to help the hosts post 195/2. Rohit remained unbeaten after smashing 111 runs off 61 balls, his innings studded with eight fours and seven sixes as the tourists could not find an answer to the Indian stand-in captain’s brilliance after opting to bowl first. Rohit, who hit counterpart

Brathwaite for a four in the third ball of the last over to bring up his fourth T20 ton -- the most by any batsman -- now has 2108 runs in the shortest format of the game. Regular skipper Virat Kohli is behind him at 2102 runs. The Indian openers had to weather some good fast bowling by West Indies at the start, but from the moment Rohit broke the shackles with a six off the first ball of spin he faced, he looked unstoppable. Rohit smashed 20 runs off the last over with Lokesh Rahul (26 not out) for company. Rahul hit two fours and a six to further propel the score.

Nation celebrates Diwali with fervor People across the country exchanged sweets and savories with friends, neighbors and relatives IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia on November 7 plunged into the festive fervor of Diwali celebrations, carrying on with their joyous mood of the festival. People across the country exchanged sweets and savories with friends, neighbors and relatives. In preparation for the evening festivities, people were seen drying their stock of crackers outside. Children helped their parents put up glittery decorations in their homes. Rows of earthen lamps dotted entrances and other areas of many homes. Girls and women showcased their artistic skills through variety of colorful Rangoli (folk art in which patterns are created on the floor using materials such as colored rice, flour, colored sand and flower petals) designs.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders also greeted the nation on the occasion of Diwali.

“Wishing all fellow citizens a happy and prosperous Diwali. May the festival of lights illuminate every home and every family, in our country and across our shared planet,” the President tweeted.

Naidu said in a series of tweets that Diwali signified the victory of good over evil. “I extend my warm greetings and good wishes to the people of our country on the auspicious occasion. Diwali signifies the victory of good over evil and reaffirms our faith in the noble qualities that Lord Ram embodied. “Also associated with Goddess Lakshmi - the harbinger of wealth, grace and prosperity - Diwali is celebrated not only in India but all over the world by the people of

Indian origin. May this festival bring illumination, peace, prosperity and happiness in our lives,” Naidu said. The Prime Minister took to Twitter: “Happy Diwali! May this festival bring happiness, good health and prosperity in everyone’s lives. May the power of good and brightness always prevail.” Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh wished warm greetings to everyone. “May God fill your life with happiness, peace and prosperity.”

Harshil is situated at the confluence of Jalandhari Gadh and Bhagirathi rivers and at the foot of the mountain that lies at the head of the Baspa Valley at the height of around 8,000 feet. Modi was flanked by Army chief Bipin Rawat. Greeting the Army and ITBP personnel on the occasion, Modi said their devotion to duty in the remote icy heights was enabling the strength of the nation and securing the future and the dreams of 125 crore Indians.

Fireworks, LEDs mark Diwali at Golden Temple Thousands of devotees gathered at the Harmandar Sahib to celebrate Bandi Chhor Diwas and Diwali IANS, AMRITSAR

fireworks display and LED lighting marked the celebrations of Bandi Chhor Diwas and Diwali as thousands of devotees flocked to the Golden Temple complex. The traditional fireworks display was a spectacular event even though its timing was reduced to just 10 minutes this year owing to pollution concerns. The complex, where the holiest of Sikh shrines, the ‘Harmandar Sahib’ is located, was illuminated with LED lights, giving it a glittering look. There was festive spirit at the shrine complex in this Sikh holy city as thousands of people came here to offer prayers and seek blessings. Acting Jathedar (chief) of the Akal Takht, Harpreet Singh, read out his message to the Sikh community on the occasion. The domes, buildings and floors of the shrine complex were cleaned and lit up for the occasion.

The day is celebrated in the Sikh religion as Bandi Chhor Diwas (prisoner liberation day). On this day, the sixth Sikh guru, Guru Hargobind, returned to Amritsar after being released along with 52 princes from imprisonment by the Mughal emperor Jahangir from Gwalior prison in 1619. The guru and the princes arrived

in Amritsar during the Diwali festivities. Since then, the Bandi Chhor Diwas and Diwali celebrations coincide at the Golden Temple complex. Elsewhere in Punjab, markets wore a festive look on the occasion of Diwali but traders said that sales were down. NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump broke a 15-year tradition of holding formal Diwali celebrations at the White House this year with the festival falling amid the crucial midterm polls. The Diwali celebration was started by former President George W. Bush in 2003 and was carried on by his successor Barack Obama. Continuing the tradition, Trump held the celebration at the Oval Office, where he lit a traditional lamp last year. This year, however, he is caught up in the elections, which took place on Tuesday after a whirlwind of campaigning that ended this week.

SC ban on crackers in Delhi-NCR not very effective IANS, NEW DELHI

D CHANDIGARH: Border Security Force (BSF) troopers exchanged sweets with their Pakistan Rangers counterparts at the Attari-Wagah joint checkpost and celebrated Diwali along the border outposts of Punjab’s international border with Pakistan. BSF officers and troopers offered sweets to their Pakistani counterparts at the border gates between both countries at the Attari-Wagah joint check post (JCP), around 30 km from Amritsar. Reports of celebrations by BSF troopers were reported in border areas of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts. —IANS

Currently, he is tied up dealing with the aftermath of the elections, which saw his Republican Party lose control of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in his Diwali greeting issued hailed the contributions of Indian Americans. “As those celebrating decorate their homes with vibrant lights, I would also like to recognize the achievements of our friends in the United States observing Diwali who make important contributions to our country on a daily basis,” said in his message. —IANS

espite the Supreme Court’s directives, people in Delhi-NCR continued to burst crackers on Diwali well past the 10 p.m. deadline though the air quality index (AQI) showed a slight improvement over last year. The Supreme Court had limited the time for bursting crackers between 8-10 p.m. on Diwali, but people started bursting crackers soon after sunset around 6 p.m. and continued well after 10 p.m. Also, the apex court had banned the sale of traditional crackers and allowed only “green crackers” in Delhi-NCR, but there was no clarity as to how many people could procure these, or the ones not containing the polluting barium salts. Delhi Police spokesman Madhur Verma said data was not immediately available at how many places the police took action against those flouting the Supreme Court directive on Diwali day. Ravi Sharma, a journalist residing in East Delhi said that he could

not find crackers in Delhi for his child but his neighbors did. “I could not buy even a phuljhadi (sparkler) or anar (fountain) for my child but some of my neighbors have arranged the crackers through some jugaad (improvisation) and they are bursting them now,” Sharma told IANS. Similar stories came in from other parts of the city such as Mayur Vihar, Dwarka and New Friends Colony. In Ghaziabad, an

IANS correspondent who went around the town was witness to violations in the posh Raj Nagar and Kavi Nagar localities, where almost all district and police officers reside. Though some firecrackers went off from 5 p.m., the frequency rapidly went up as the sun set. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a senior police officer admitted that it was very difficult to implement the Supreme Court

order. The air quality in the national capital and surrounding areas on November 7 was recorded as “very poor”, a slight improvement from last year’s Diwali night. The Supreme Court’s strict directive and a moderately high wind speed appeared to be the reason the Air Quality Index (AQI) did not reach the “severe” level. The AQI at 9 p.m. was 291, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Last Diwali, the AQI was recorded at 326. The PM2.5 and PM10, or particles with diameter less than 2.5 and 10 micrometers, in Delhi NCR was 164 and 292 microgrammes per cubic meter. The permissible limit for PM2.5 and PM10 is 60 and 80 units by national standards and 25 and 50 units by international standards. The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), weather forecasting body under Ministry of Earth Science, said the moisture in the air on Wednesday was normal, thus reducing the air holding capacity.

Applauding the maker’s quick response, Sirsa tweeted: “It’s good you have clarified this in time. We accept your point. Anything that hurts religious sentiments should be clarified with clear communication.” The controversy started due to a scene in a trailer in which Shah Rukh seems to be wearing Sikh religious symbol Gatka Kirpan in the underwear. Sirsa, a Delhi MLA, demanded that it must be immediately deleted. The film’s PR team wrote to him saying no visual or image in the film depicted the Kirpan.

Nihalani said: “Yes, I’ve taken the matter to the honorable High Court. I had no choice. With the number of cuts ordered by the CBFC — and that too of harmless footage and dialogues — and with my film’s release on November 16 around the corner, I had no choice but to go to court.”

He says he was advised to go to the Revising Committee of the CBFC. But he chose not to. “The decisions of the Revising Committee are monitored by the CBFC chairperson. I should know because I’ve been there. But the current chairperson (Prasoon Joshi) is out of the country. This, I believe, is often the case. Big B sings lullaby in ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’

Must listen to #Metoo victims, says Huma

M

egastar Amitabh Bachchan has sung a few lines of a lullaby for the forthcoming film Thugs Of Hindostan. He says he was excited to sing it. Amitabh said the song tells the depth of the bond between his character Khudabaksh, mentor of Zafira, essayed by Fatima Sana Sheikh. “The song tells you the depth of the bond that Zafira and Khudabaksh share. I was most excited to sing this lullaby because it is not everyday that you get to sing one,” Amitabh said in a statement.

A

ctress Huma Qureshi thinks it is brave of women to come out and talk about their #MeToo stories, saying the movement will bring positive change in the country. However, she also urges people to “listen to the victims”. “I think #MeToo is the most relevant movement that has happened in recent times in India as far as women are concerned,” Huma told IANS on the sidelines of the showcase of H&M’s new designer collection in collaboration with iconic Italian brand Moschino. “And I think it is amazing but heartbreaking to hear stories about stuff that women — and supposedly powerful and successful women — go through every single day,” she added.

Richa’s take on adult film star

Priyanka throws bachelorette party

A

fter a bridal shower in New York, actress Priyanka Chopra has set out on a bachelorette party. And her future mother-in-law to be has urged her to “be good”. Less than a week after Priyanka celebrated her upcoming wedding to American singer Nick Jonas at a bridal shower in New York City, the former Quantico actress shared that her bachelorette party had just begun, reported people.com. On Saturday, the bride-to-be shared a photograph of herself smiling from ear-to-ear while wearing a fuzzy white off-the-shoulder sweater, which she captioned” “#BacheloretteVibes”. “Be good,” Jonas’ mother Denise commented, adding a red heart emoji. Priyanka had first hinted at the celebrations to come on Friday, when she shared a photograph on her Instagram Story of her dog sitting in a car, which she captioned, “Bye Bye LA.”

A

ctress Richa Chadha, who essays south Indian film actress Shakeela in a biopic of that name, says being disrespectful towards any successful adult film star and tagging her as a “porn star” is a sign of a hypocritical and patriarchal society. “Calling an adult (film) star a porn star is a sign of patriarchy. You are disrespecting an actress (Shakeela in this case) who is part of films that are adult in theme. And then you are watching them so much that those films are making huge money. What kind of hypocrisy is that,” Richa told IANS in an interview on the set of the biopic Shakeela.

‘Never felt competitive with Salman, Shah Rukh’

hile one of the superstars of Bollywood Salman Khan suggested another superstar Shah Rukh Khan to hear the script of the upcoming film Zero, it is no secret that Aamir Khan suggested Shah Rukh’s name to Rakesh Sharma’s biopic that finally Shah Rukh will start shooting for next year. According to Aamir, such exchanges happen because he does not feel competitive with any of his contemporaries. “I am not a competitive person and I never felt competitive with Salman and Shah Rukh,” Aamir told the media in an interview. He also shared how he suggested Shah Rukh’s name for the Rakesh Sharma biopic because he genuinely felt that he is the best fit for the film. — All stories from IANS

Actually it’s all about western influences these days...minimal fashion is the biggest statement to talk about. The major change we have seen is that earlier it was all about flaunting heavy pieces but now it is about one statement piece that fetches everyone’s attention,” Vaswani told IANS when asked about jewelery trends. Similarly, demand for the yellow metal in Kolkata during the day was down 10 per cent as prices were around 7 per cent higher than last year, India Bullion and Jewelers Association's West Bengal President Pankaj Parekh told IANS.

"Dhanteras was expected to bring the much needed rejuvenation in the market but this year jewelery sales have not yet picked up so far," he said. Trump Threatens Birth right Citizenship With Executive Order

BY A STAFF WRITER resident Donald Trump said in an interview published Tuesday that he intends to sign an executive order that would end birthright citizenship for the children of many immigrants to the U.S. — but House Speaker Paul Ryan quickly rejected the plan. Trump, in an interview with Axios, said birthright citizenship “has to end” and that it would, “with an executive order.” “We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits,” Trump said. “It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end.” “It’s in the process. It’ll happen with an executive order,” he said, adding that he’s consulted with the White House counsel on the matter. Under the 14th Amendment, citizenship is awarded to children born in the U.S., or in U.S. territories, to parents of immigrants to the country. Hours later, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who rarely breaks with the president, rejected Trump’s comments, explaining that the president “cannot end birthright citizenship with an executive order.” “I believe in interpreting the Constitution as its written, and that means you can’t do something like this via executive order,” Ryan added. Vestibular can cause Dizziness and Balance Disorders BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- Vestibular (inner ear) disorders can cause dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, hearing changes, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and other symptoms. These symptoms can have potentially devastating effects on a person’s day-today functioning, ability to work, relationships with family and friends, and quality of life. Vestibular, or balance system, disorders can be caused by a variety of influences, including viral infection, vestibular (balance) nerve neuronitis (decreased nerve function), cardiovascular disease, head trauma, poisoning, allergies, aging and many other diseases of the inner ear. Diagnosing and treating vestibular disorders is not always straightforward. In addition, such disorders are often “invisible”, making it difficult for others to understand how disabling they can be. Therefore, it is very important that people who suffer from balance disorders seek out professionals with the education, training and experience to properly diagnose and treat balance disorders. The diagnosis of balance disorders begins with a visit to your Audiologist who will perform both hearing and balance testing to determine the functionality or your inner ear balance system and hearing mechanisms. If a measurable deficit is identified the Audiologist will provide the proper referral for treatment whether it’s Vestibular Therapy or medical/ surgical remediation. When a referral is warranted the Audiologist will either send you to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist for medical treatment or to a Physical Therapist for treatment. Physical therapy for balance disorders requires specialized training and experience to provide the proper exercises and routines.

BY A STAFF WRITER CHAUMBURG, IL— Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi declared victory Tuesday night in his re-election bid to the U.S. House of Representatives for the 8th District of Illinois that includes west and northwest Chicago suburbs. “You sent me to Washington two years ago with a clear message: Despite the partisan fighting and finger-pointing, you wanted me to get things done,” Krishnamoorthi said before supporters. “And together, we have.”Krishnamoorthi was the lead Democratic sponsor on legislation that was signed into law to modernize America’s skills-based career, technical and vocational education system. There are currently more than 7 million unfilled jobs in our economy because workers have not received the requisite training to fill the jobs. Krishnamoorthi’s law will help change that and get millions back to work. With 100% of the precincts in the 8th District reporting election returns, Krishnamoorthi has the support of nearly 66 percent of voters. “From health care to infrastructure; from climate change to gun violence, we must put partisanship aside and make real progress for our nation,” Krishnamoorthi said. “And I pledge to you tonight, that’s what I’ll continue to do.” Krishnamoorthi swept all of the Chicago area major newspaper endorsements on his way to winning the re-election to Congress in the 8th District of Illinois.

Controversial Post on Immigration by Indian Amercian professor BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY— An online post published in July by Rohit Parikh, an Indian American professor, is causing an uproar at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. In the Facebook post, which recently came to the attention of the student body, he wrote that while immigration is “good” and “has been good” for America, immigrants from Mexico, he seemed to allude, fall in the undesirable category. “Hispanics are GOOD people, gentle and nice and not at all criminal. But are they really the population which America needs for the rest of this century when more and more education is required?” Parikh wrote. He went on to add that Indian Americans have the highest rate 70% of going to college By contrast, he wrote, “Hispanics have the highest rate of dropping out of school.” Parikh went on to question why Mexico receives the “lion’s share” as far as immigration is concerned, and noted that illegal immigrants should be deported.

Autistic women lack access to reproductive planning: Study TORONTO: Women with autism and Down syndrome have nearly double the rate of having another baby within a year of delivering, compared to women without such disabilities, indicating a lack of access to reproductive planning, a new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal

(CMAJ) has found. The findings suggested that rapid repeat pregnancies in women with intellectual and developmental disabilities ended in induced abortion (49 percent), live birth (33 percent) and pregnancy loss (18 percent), compared with induced abortion (59 percent), pregnan-

cy loss (22 percent) and live births (19 percent) in women without these disabilities. This also indicated a lack of access to reproductive health care, such as pregnancy planning and contraception, the researchers said. “Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities are

more likely, than those without such disabilities, to be young and disadvantaged in each marker of social, health, and health care disparities,” said lead author Hilary Brown, scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) — a Canada based non-profit organization.

M

ore than 660 million Indians are exposed to high air pollution as they live in areas where the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exceeds the permissible limit, researchers said this week. People in the national capital would live six years longer if its air quality met the national standards. To help improve India’s air quality, researchers from the University of Chicago and Harvard Kennedy School have laid out five key evidence-based policy recommendations in a new report titled “A Roadmap Towards Cleaning India’s Air”, which was released this week. It draws learnings from working with different state pollution control boards over the last several

Sleeping pills linked to Alzheimer’s risk, says study LONDON: Regular intake of benzodiazepines, widely used to treat insomnia and anxiety, may be associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, a study has warned. Even though the increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease was small in this study, the threshold for prescribing benzodiazepines and related drugs should be high enough due to their several adverse effects and events, such as falls, said researchers from the University of Eastern Finland. These medications are commonly used for sleep problems, but their effectiveness for this indication diminishes over weeks or months.

However, the risk of adverse events remains in longer-term use. The results, published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, showed that the risk increase was similar with both benzodiazepines and Z drugs regardless of their half-life. The study included all Finnish community dwellers with newly-diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease in 70,719 persons, and their age, sex and region of residence matched controls (282,862 persons). Many chronic disorders, substance abuse, socioeconomical position and use of antidepressants and antipsychotics were taken into account. — IANS

means to predict the overall reduction in life expectancy caused by living in places with high air pollution. If India were to achieve its own air quality standards, life expectancy would increase by more than

one year on an average, says the 16-page report. This number would increase to four years if India were to meet the World Health Organization’s norms. Some of the greatest gains would be seen in the country’s largest cities, such as Delhi. There, people would live six years longer if air quality met the national standards. Similar gains are expected across the Indo-Gangetic plain, including in the rural areas. Recommendations by the report include improving emissions monitoring by better aligning incentives of auditors, providing regulators with real-time data on polluters’ emissions, applying monetary charges for excess emissions, informing the public about polluters and using markets to reduce abatement costs and pollution.

SYDNEY: Consuming a marijuanabased drug may be safe in treating children with severe epilepsy, results of a clinical trial published in the Medical Journal of Australia, showed. Following treatment with cannabidiol — a non-psychoactive compound found in marijuana — about one in five children were described as much or very much improved from their baseline, while around half reported none, or a very slight improvement, Xinhua news agency reported. While the trial was conducted on a small group of children with severe epilepsy, it showed that the drug had a manageable side effect profile, but only showed extensive symptom relief for a some patients. — IANS

Long-term vaping harmful for lungs IANS, LONDON

W

ith vaping becoming a style statement globally, including in India, a small, yet significant study has found that vaporizers may potentially disable key immune cells in the lung and boosts inflammation, if used for long. The e-cigarette vapor boosts the production of inflammatory chemicals and disables key protective cells in the lung that keep the air spaces clear of potentially harmful particles, revealed the study published online in the journal Thorax. Vaporizers are different from traditional e-cigarettes in terms of the range of flavors, mixing, better user control and large battery use. According to Professor David Thickett from Britain’s University of Birmingham, many e-cigarette companies have been bought up by

the tobacco giants, “and there’s certainly an agenda to portray e-cigarettes as safe”. While e-cigarettes are safer than traditional cigarettes, they may still be harmful in the long term, Thickett explained as the current body of research is in its infancy and not able to answer that question yet.

“In terms of cancer-causing molecules in cigarette smoke, as opposed to cigarette vapor, there are certainly reduced numbers of carcinogens. They are safer in terms of cancer risk, but if you vape for 20 or 30 years and this can cause COPD, then that’s something we need to know about,” he stated.

themselves, and egalitarian leaders who frequently seek a group consensus,” he added. In the study, the participants were divided into groups in which the leaders of groups had to take decisions on certain issues. They could either make a decision themselves or delegate it to the group. A distinction was drawn between ‘self’ trials, in which the decision

only affected the decision-makers themselves, and ‘group’ trials, in which there were consequences for the whole group. The team tested several common intuitive beliefs, such as the notion that individuals who were less afraid of potential losses or taking risks, or who liked being in control, and would be more willing to take on responsibility for others.

Decision making is crucial leadership trait IANS, LONDON

I NEW DELHI: One of the things that is a major concern for many as they age is stubborn changes in the way your skin tone looks. Even if the skin is healthy, past exposure or medications can leave marks on the skin in the form of age spots and darker patches. If you have an uneven skin tone and are looking for ways to correct it, then look no further. Sangeeta Velaskar, Vice President, R&D and Head, Medical Services from Kaya Clinic, gives tips to take care of uneven skin tone: v Firstly, you need to ensure that you are taking care of your skin and should adopt a good skin care regimen if you do not already have one. You should aim to cleanse, tone and moisturize the skin on your face twice a day and never go to sleep wearing makeup. v You should also exfoliate the skin on your face a couple of times a week using a gentle exfoliate to improve the overall appearance of your skin and to remove dead skin cells; this may give you a more even complexion. v Using a toner on your face after cleansing can really help to clean and brighten your skin, leaving it looking hydrated and healthy.—IANS

luminous, featherweight chanderi cottons — finely-crafted handloom pieces will always win the creative battle over all things factory-made,” Dongre told IANS. “Moreover, India’s handloom industry, unlike several other sectors, is innately environmentally

conscious and responsible. It also provides artisans with a sustainable means of income in their villages... It’s about time we put the spotlight back on traditional weaves and give handloom its due,” Dongre added. The designer also said that there have been a significant growth in the interest in handloom and traditional weaves in the recent years. “The active involvement and thoughtful initiatives of the government have accelerated the spread of this awareness. A lot of designers are creating conscious fashion using Indian textiles and crafts. Fashion schools are also doing fantastic work in sensitizing the design community to these relevant issues. With Grassroot (one of her labels), we’re going one step ahead and making sure fashion benefits the maker and the buyer,” she said.

one are the days when handlooms were restricted to ethnic wear. Young designers are giving fresh perspective to this age-old textile and craft in the form of dresses, maxi-gowns and jumpsuits — making it, in the process, more meaningful for today’s generation. “I find lots of young designers are trying to integrate responsible fashion into their ideas. The government is supporting these clusters as part of the Make in India campaign and I see a serious effort to try and focus attention on the plight of our craftsmen and weavers,” designer Payal Khandwala, who launched her eponymous label in 2012 and works with handwoven silks, khadi, cottons and linens, told IANS.

f you tend to cringe when asked to take crucial decisions that might also affect others, or wish that someone else could take decisions on your behalf, you cannot make a good leader. According to a study, led by researchers from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, responsibility aversion or unwillingness to take decisions that also affect the welfare of others, sets followers apart from the leaders. Leaders are more willing to take responsibility for making decisions that affect the welfare of others, and

do not delegate decision-making. Conversely, responsibility aversion was driven by a greater need for certainty about the best course of action when the decision also had an effect on others, said the researchers, in the paper published in the journal Science. “Because this framework highlights the change in the amount of certainty required to make a decision, and not the individual’s general tendency for assuming control, it can account for many different leadership types,” said lead author Micah Edelson from the varsity. “These can include authoritarian leaders who make most decisions

Can technology hamper kids’ communication skills? IANS, NEW YORK

A

re you a tech buff and have filled your house with latest technologies from Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri to the Google Assistant? If so, it may affect your toddler’s early communication skills. Researchers found that if a toddler asks these voice activated devices a question, he or she will in reply get a silence, or the familiar, default robot apology, representing “broken” or uncommunicative device. Children communicate with technology differently than adults

do, and a more responsive device — one that repeats or prompts the user, for example — could be more useful to more people, the study

suggested. “There has to be more than I’m sorry, I didn’t quite get that,” said Alexis Hiniker, Assistant Professor at the University of

Washington. “Voice interfaces now are designed in a cut-and-dried way that needs more nuance. Adults don’t talk to children and assume there will be perfect communication. That’s relevant here,” he added. The study was presented at the 17th Interaction Design and Children Conference, in Norway. The team conducted a two-week test in the homes of 14 preschoolers of a tablet game that included a broken voice-driven mini-game. They collected 107 audio samples of these children’s (unsuccessful) attempts to communicate with the mini-game.

Antibiotics most prescribed medicine worldwide: Study The research showed that antibiotic resistance due to over use accounts for nearly 23,000 deaths annually in the US IANS, SYDNEY

T

he increased over-thecounter supply of antibiotics in many countries including India, is worsening antibiotic resistance globally, finds a study highlighting an urgent need for better enforcement of laws. The findings showed that between 2000 and 2010, the consumption of antibiotics increased globally from 50 billion to 70 billion standard units. A majority of overall increase occurred in India, China, Brazil, Russia and South Africa.

BRIEFS This is how smell helps form distinct memories TORONTO: Do you know why you instantly recall the smell of apple pie prepared way back by your grandmother as you walk into her kitchen? There is a scientific reason behind it. The findings can offer opportunities for improved smell tests in Alzheimer’s diagnosis. For the study, published in the journal Nature Communications, the analysed data from mice models. “Our findings demonstrate how smells we’ve encountered in our lives are recreated in memory,” said lead author Afif Aqrabawi from the University of Toronto.

Parkinson’s drug may help treat heart failure NEW YORK: A drug currently in clinical trials for treating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may help treat heart failure, claimed a study. The drug named ITI-214 — a member of a class of compounds known as phosphodiesterase (PDE) type I inhibitors — has shown a safer way to increase heart contraction in animals, said authors from the Johns Hopkins University, US. For the experiment, published in the journal Circulation, the team used six dogs surgically outfitted with heart pacemakers, and tested ITI-214’s effects on them before and after inducing heart failure by running the pacemaker rapidly for approximately three weeks. —IANS

Perfectionism in kids may predict OCD risk IANS, NEW YORK

D

oes your child act finicky, even for small things? Beware, that perfectionism and excessive self-control behavior could be a predictor of the risk of developing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in teenage, finds a study The study involving brain scans revealed that the perfectionists had smaller volumes of a brain structure called the anterior cingulate cortex — an anatomical feature in the brain that previously has been linked to OCD in adults. They were also twice as likely as others to develop OCD by the time they reach their teenage. “Having a lot of self-control and

striving for perfection often are considered by parents and society as good because they can eliminate mistakes, but excessive self-control and perfectionism raise a red flag,”

said lead author Kirsten E. Gilbert, from Washington University in St. Louis, US. “We’ve now been able to link this to OCD risk in children,”Gilbert

Virtual reality to help students experience dementia first hand IANS, NEW YORK

V

irtual Reality (VR) simulations with models of real-life patients can help students experience dementia first-hand and gain better understanding of progressive cognitive diseases, including Alzheimer’s, say researchers. By experiencing aspects of someone else’s journey, the students may gain empathy for, older adults and their struggles with dementia, said neurologists at Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2018 in Chicago this week.

The training programme for about 20 high school students. “What we’re hearing from the students is that experiencing the virtual reality training before they volunteer improves their empathy and increases enthusiasm for working with the seniors,” said Daniel C. Potts of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. The researchers have created two Alfred and Beatriz modules. The Alfred module is a live-action film, on the experiences of a 74year-old with mild cognitive impairment, macular degeneration. The Beatriz module includes five-

minute stories of a middle-aged Latina as she experiences the early, middle and later aspects of Alzheimer’s disease . According to Neelum Aggarwal of Rush University, Chicago, for the students, “it’s a good check to see if they have empathy for the patients and are aware of any biases they may have towards people with dementia”.

added, in the paper published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry. OCD is a chronic mental health disorder that often involves uncontrollable, recurring thoughts and behaviors that one feels the need to keep repeating. For the study, the team enrolled 292 children who were handed a blank paper and a green marker to draw a perfect, green circle. After a child showed the circle to the researchers, they would provide negative feedback, calling the circle “too small” or “too flat” and then would tell the child to try again. “Some kids were very self-critical,” Gilbert said. “The researcher would point out flaws, but the child was critical of the effort, too. That excessive perfectionism was the strongest predictor of OCD later on.”
