EULOGIZING THE DIASPORA Diaspora’s strength can be driving force for India, says Prime Minister Narendra Modi while inaugurating the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Gandhinagar IANS, GANDHINAGAR

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on January 8 said every NRI is like a “shakti” and if the strength of the entire diaspora can be consolidated, it could become a driving force for India’s progress. Addressing the inauguration of the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here, the world’s largest annual gathering of people of Indian origin, Modi also said that he has fulfilled his promise to the diaspora of merging the Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards. He exhorted the diaspora to come and contribute to India’s success in any way possible, including knowledge, expertise or skills. He mentioned in particular, the Namaami Gange project to clean River Ganga, and said 40 percent of India lived by and survived on the river. He said he was sure all NRIs would be inspired to contribute to this cause. Modi said the world is ready to “embrace India” and cited as an example the fact that his proposal at the UN to institute an interna-

collectively. He said even if a solitary NRI is present anywhere in the world, India is alive and present in that corner of the world through him or her. He said then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had proposed the idea of starting a PBD and it was begun in

2003. Referring to the apparent slackening in enthusiasm during the past few years to the annual gala, Modi said that “in between, little little, people did not feel like coming. Few would come and a few came because they had to come; but I would come regularly,”

to laughter among the crowd. “We are extremely proud of our diaspora. They have made India global and their strong values have endeared them wherever they have gone,” he tweeted later. Earlier, Modi welcomed Guyana President Donald Ramotar, South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and Mauritius Vice Prime Minister Showkutally Soodhun who were on the dais with him. He later held bilateral meetings with them. He recalled how Indian festivals such as Holi and Diwali are enthusiastically celebrated in Guyana, that January 8 also happens to be the founding day of the African National Congress in South Africa and Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2 is observed in Mauritius with even greater vigor than in India. Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said the government is determined to work closely with its huge diaspora to “leverage each other’s strengths for mutual benefita and urged professionals from the diaspora to join in efforts to develop India and “restore it to its past glory”.

T GANDHINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 8 morning inaugurated the Salt Mountain, a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, built near the Mahatma Mandir complex here, the venue of the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD). Modi went around the exhibits related to Gandhi’s life at the Gandhi Kutir and also wrote on the visitor’s book. The inauguration comes ahead of the formal inauguration of the official part of the PBD. More than 4,000 delegates have

arrived for the 13th PBD, the world’s largest annual gathering of people of Indian origin aimed at enhancing networking and reinforcing commercial linkages. There are 25 million people of Indian origin residing outside India. The event is being held in Gandhinagar Jan 7-9 to mark the centenary of India’s “sarva sreshtha pravasi Bharatiya”, or foremost Indian diaspora member, Mahatma Gandhi’s return to the country from South Africa. The Mahatma Mandir is a sprawling complex spread across 60,000 sq mt.

he Narendra Modi government is determined to work closely with India’s huge diaspora, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Sushma Swaraj said here on January 8 and invited professionals from the diaspora to join in efforts to develop the country and “restore it to its past glory”. In her remarks during the inauguration of the 13th Pravasi Bharaiya Divas (PBD) here, Sushma Swaraj assured the diaspora that their efforts to contribute to India’s development would be a “mutually rewarding and satisfying partnership”. “I believe you have the unique insights, perspectives and the extensive natural links that can make this partnership work,” she said. Sushma Swaraj, who is also the external affairs minister, said the 25 million-strong Indian diaspora constitutes an important and unique force that has given India a presence in many parts of the world. “However, it is not a oneway interaction that benefits only one side. It pleases all Indians

and self-reliant India would be a source of strength and inspiration for the diaspora. This synergy acts as a vibrant bridge between us and sustains our relationship,” she said. The Union minister assured the diaspora that the government was determined to work closely with it to “leverage each other’s strengths for mutual benefit”.

from New Zealand; Nandini Tandon from US; Ashraf Palarakunnummal from UAE; Essop Esoop Goolam from South Africa; Bharatkumar Jayantilal Shah from UAE; Rajmal M. Lisa Singh from

Australia who could not receive the award last year will also get the Samman this year. The three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, attended by around 4,000 diaspora members, came to an end with the conferment of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards by Vice President Hamid Ansari to 15 prominent diaspora members. Lisa Singh from Australia, who could not receive the award last year, received the Samman, while

A. Satyanarayana Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, who was named for the award was not present. Terming then “deserving recipients of this recognition”, he said: “Through their exemplary work, they have also proved to be outstanding envoys of peace, friendship and cooperation between India and countries of their residence.” Ansari said that overseas Indians are “in virtually every country and region of the world”, and recited an Urdu

phrase to describe their ubiquitous presence: “Jidhar dekhta hoon faqat tu hi tu hai (wherever I look I see only you)”. He said the overseas Indians, ranging from blue collars workers to doctors, engineers, IT professionals and business persons, have multiple identities but “a common denominator is their emotional bond to India, and to its cultural legacy. “They cherish it, individually and collectively, and so do we here.”

Working to remove bottlenecks in doing business: Rajnath IANS, GANDHINAGAR

U

nion Home Minister Rajnath Singh on January 9 told the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here that the Narendra Modi government is working tirelessly to remove bottlenecks and cut red tape in order to improve the business environment in India. Chairing a session on Investment Opportunities in Indian States at the PBD, the world’s largest annual gathering of people of Indian origin, Singh said the country is “moving towards an era of cooperative federalism, giving voice to states in shaping the economic destiny of the nation". He said with this objective in

mind, the government had replaced the Planning Commission with the Niti Aayog from Jan 1 this year. "In democracy, we follow

the dictum of collective wisdom and collective responsibility. I am confident that our collective wisdom will help us in overcoming

any differences," he said. He said the new government headed by Modi has already taken a series of measures to re-ignite the economy. "We have reasons to be optimistic as we are constantly making course corrections to gain investor confidence," he said. Singh said the ‘Make in India’ initiative is a "mission to transform this country from an importer of manufactured items to an exporter of manufactured products". Singh said the prime minster "is focused on improving the business environment in the country and has stressed on the mantra of ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’". He said the government is seriously pursuing early

implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) which "will create a buoyant source of revenue and create a large common market by eliminating internal barriers". "Such measures are necessary to rebuild confidence and trust that is extremely important to revive investments and drive higher growth," Singh said. The home minister said India "has a vast pool of natural resources and skilled human resources to make this country a ‘New Manufacturing Hub’. The people of Indian origin and the NRIs should invest in actualizing the dream of ‘Make in India’. India’s progress can not be achieved only by the people living within the country," he said.

eading companies, international financial organizations and countries have made investment commitments worth over `25000 billion at the seventh edition of the Vibrant Gujarat summit, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel said on January 12. Patel said that a record over 21,000 MoUs (memorandums of understanding) were signed on the first two days of the three-day summit. She said that 1,225 strategic partnerships were signed during the biennial summit, the biggest one so far. Over 25,000 delegates from 110 countries, including over 2,500 foreign delegates from 56 international delegations participated in the summit, a senior Gujarat government official said here. The trade show, held in an area of 125,000 square metres, saw footfalls of over one million in just two days, the official said. Earlier, making a decisive push towards generating investment to see the success of his ‘Make in India’ mantra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on January 11 his government was trying to revive the economy, and told global investors that India today was a land of opportunities. “In a short span of seven

GANDHINAGAR: US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived at the inaugural of the Vibrant Gujarat global investment summit well after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank president Jim Yong Kim had been seated and the function had started. As Kerry walked up the stage, Modi got up from his seat to welcome him. Modi and Kerry did not just shake hands as world leaders generally do. Both gave each other a warm hug as the others, mostly industry captains, business leaders and CEOs, applauded. Kerry and Modi spoke to each other briefly as Gujarat Governor

BIG APPLAUSE THE BIGGEST and almost continuous applause during the summit inaugural was not for John Kerry, Ban Ki-moon, Jim Yong Kim or others. The honor went to Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. Tobgay spoke just before Modi but was able to generate a lot of interest among those present. He spoke in English and near fluent Hindi and connected well with everyone. He spoke about Bhutan being a tiny Himalayan country and, while tucked away between giants China and India, offering abundant natural resources, tran-

spread over a 55-acre complex comprising conference venues, exhibition halls and landscaped gardens, in the Gujarat capital, saw the biggest participation from other countries this time. Modi said there was tremendous interest in India, and “countries were coming forward to work with us. Today, India is a land of opportunities”. “My government is committed to create a policy environment that is predictable, transparent and fair.” Modi went on: “We will have to change the way we have been

O.P. Kohli and Chief Minister Anandiben Patel looked on. In his speech later, Kerry said he was happy to be in the home state of Modi, whom he described as a visionary leader. Kerry pointed out that US President Barack Obama’s visit to India for the January 26 Republic Day Parade was a first for any US president. “This is also the first time ever that a US president has visited one country twice in his tenure,” Kerry said. The warmth Kerry and Modi showed and Obama’s impending visit are clear signs of warming relations between the US and India.

He said his government was committed to changing and improving the economic and social condition of India, including the quality of life. “We want to promote co-operative federalism in the country. At the same time, we want a competitive element among the states.” “Your (world leaders’) presence today has enhanced the enterprising streak of 60 million Gujaratis and has boosted the morale of 1.2 billion Indians,” he added.

‘Vibrant Gujarat made world vibrate with dynamism’ quility and quality of life. Tobgay spoke about the Gross Domestic Happiness being paramount instead of the world’s race for higher GDP. The way he delivered his address, with facts about Bhutan, had the whole hall at the Mahatma Mandir complex applauding him. Mastercard international’s CEO Ajay Banga pointed out that he was a living example of ‘Make in India’, the slogan coined by Prime Minister Modi. “I was born in India and studied here (IIM Ahmedabad) and worked in India for 15 years. So I was made in India. Then I moved (to the US).”

Asked why was it not possible for Kerry to make the trip instead, the spokesperson said: “What I can tell you is that certainly the Secretary of State is somebody who has very important responsibilities himself.” “He was in India this past weekend doing some important work representing US interests there,” Earnest said referring to his attendance at the Vibrant Gujarat summit in Ahmedabad and his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India, US likely to sign defense agreement IANS, NEW DELHI

I NEW DELHI: With a fortnight left for US President Barack Obama’s visit, India on January 12 said it was looking forward with great enthusiasm to the “landmark” visit and both sides were keen to have “excellent outcomes” from the talks. Obama will be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade on January 26, in what will be his second visit to India. “I can confirm that the government of India is looking forward with great enthusiasm” to the visit, external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said at a briefing here. He said US Secretary of State John Kerry, who was in Gandhinagar to attend the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 11 during which both held talks on the agenda for Obama’s visit. He said talks were on regarding the outcome of the visit, and added: “Both India and the US look at this as a landmark visit, both are keen to have excellent outcomes of the visit”. Amid reports that Obama might be visiting Agra or Varanasi, the spokesperson said the logistical details of the US president’s visit would be worked out later by senior officials.

So there was just really no way for him to get there,” Harf said. “As you know, when the Secretary is going someplace, particularly on a trip like India that we’ve had planned for a long time around an event with Prime Minister Modi, that’s very hard to turn off, and he didn’t want to.”

Obama, Netanyahu discuss Iran issue WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has reassured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Washington’s commitment to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb, a White House statement said. Obama made the pledge Monday hours after US Secretary of State John Kerry, presently visiting Pakistan, expressed a wish to accelerate nuclear talks with Iran, Xinhua reported on January 13. In a White House statement, Obama reiterated that nuclear talks with Iran focus on reaching a deal across the board that prevents Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb and obliges Iran to unequivocally guarantee that international community about the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

US-Cuba thaw a tectonic shift in international ties AMIT DASGUPTA, NEW DELHI

C

rafted in extreme secrecy and brokered by Pope Francis, the thaw in USCuba relations is a tectonic shift in international relations and quite possibly the boldest initiative of 2014. So stunning and unexpected was the announcement that its implications are yet to be fully fathomed. In India, not surprisingly, the self-absorbed media all but neglected to report the historic event. The details of the thaw were being negotiated, even as President Vladimir Putin visited Cuba in July 2014 and entered into a series

of new agreements to further bolster Moscow-Havana links. These included the reopening of the former Soviet base in Lourdes that had been mothballed in 2001,

and could be used as a listening post for US maritime activity across the Straits. Cuba apparently agreed to also allow Moscow to establish a GPS on the island, as

part of a space cooperation programme. When the news of the historic rapprochement broke, a stunned Moscow reacted as best as it could, with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov welcoming the announcement. For cashstrapped Moscow, there appeared little else it could do. There is increasing speculation that the development could see the erosion of Moscow’s influence on Havana. Castro, however, made it clear to Washington that the thaw would not result in a change in either the regime in Havana or in the political or economic system.

Salman Khan in trouble

Salman Khan

NEW DELHI: In a setback to filmstar Salman Khan, the Supreme Court set aside the Rajasthan High Court order putting on hold his conviction in the blackbuck hunting case. An apex court bench headed by Justice S.J. Mukhopadhyay remanded the matter back to the high court for fresh consideration. Pronouncing the verdict, Justice Mukhopadhyay said the filmstar could tell the court that he would

suffer irreversible damage if his conviction is not stayed and he is eventually acquitted. The court said that the Rajasthan government at the same time could argue that no irreversible damage which cannot be undone would be caused if his conviction is not stayed. The Rajasthan High Court had put on hold Salman’s conviction on his plea that it was coming in his way to get visa to travel to England. Salman’s sentence has already been put on hold by the high court that also suspended his conviction Nov 12, 2013. Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu, Neelam and others were accused of hunting the protected blackbuck in Rajasthan during the shooting for the film Hum Saath Saath Hain. Salman was convicted by a trial court April 10, 2006m, under the Wild Life (Protection) Act and was awarded five years’ jail and a fine of `25,000. The sessions judge on August 24, 2007, upheld his conviction and sentence as it dismissed his appeal against the trial court order. The Rajasthan High Court by its order of August 31, 2007, suspended his sentence, and Nov 12, 2013, suspended the order of conviction as it came in the way of Salman’s foreign travels.

sion’s decision and this development is a tight slap on the faces of those who were accusing us of delaying the polls in Delhi. We are confident that we will win the assembly elections and provide a strong, stable and efficient government to the people of Delhi,” BJP Delhi unit media convenor Praveen Shankar Kapoor told IANS. Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia told IANS: “We are confident that we will win. It’s a contest between AAP and the BJP as the Congress is out of picture.” However, former Delhi chief

minister Sheila Dikshit claimed Congress was getting a “good response” in public meetings. Party spokesperson Sanjay Jha told IANS: “Congress will go to the Delhi election with full confidence. The party expects do well this time round.” “It was the anti-UPA sentiment because of which we could not do well in the last Delhi assembly elections but this time round we will certainly do well,” he said. More than 1.3 crore people will be eligible to vote across 11,763 polling centres in the Delhi assem-

bly elections. Sampath said the Model Code of Conduct would come into effect immediately, barring the government from taking major policy decisions that could influence the electorate. He said that the time given for campaigning was less as it was a single state election. “Also, in Delhi’s case, there was enough anticipation for the election, so more time is not needed,” Sampath said. Delhi elected a hung assembly in December 2013 after which the AAP formed a minority government headed by Kejriwal with Congress backing.

Is Sekhar Basu new DRDO chief? IANS, NEW DELHI

N

uclear scientist Sekhar Basu is likely to be named the new DRDO chief replacing Avinash Chander, government sources said on January 14. A notification was issued by the government terminating the services of Chander, who has headed the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) since June 2013. Chander, widely known as the man behind the Agni series of missiles, retired from his post on November 30 last year and has since continued on contract. Basu,

Nuclear scientist Sekhar Basu

who heads the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, is the man behind the nuclear system that is driving the Arihant-class submarines of the Indian Navy.

Later, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said that it was on his recommendation that DRDO chief Avinash Chander’s term was ended. “I recommended that a person on contract should not be occupying such a senior position. This senior position should be filled by other eligible senior persons. There is no controversy here,” he said. “The tenure of DRDO chief would normally have ended in November but the previous cabinet had approved a three-year extension to his term, with the additional years being on contract,” Parrikar told reporters.

Indian economy to grow by 7 percent: WB ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS

H

elped along by falling oil prices and by lower interest rates in developed countries, India’s economy is expected to grow by seven percent next year and these two factors can be a game-changer if the nation were to seize the opportunity to implement fiscal and structural reforms, World Bank Chief Economist Kaushik Basu said Tuesday. As for this year, Indian economy is expected to grow by 6.4, according to two separate projections

released by the Bangkok-based UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Washington-based World Bank, which also predicted a 7 percent increase in 2017.

Overall, Basu painted a dim picture of the global economy facing a “stalled recovery in some highincome economies and even some middle-income countries” but said “there are some silver linings behind the clouds.” “The lower oil price, which is expected to persist through 2015,” he said, “is lowering inflation worldwide and is likely to delay interest rate hikes in rich countries. This creates a window of opportunity for oilimporting nations, such as China and India; we expect India’s growth to rise to 7 percent by 2016.”

Sachin Tendulkar to run alongside Kerala governor THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sports lovers in Kerala will have an opportunity to watch cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar run alongside Governor P.Sathasivam and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in a marathon being held across the state January 20. The marathon titled Run Kerala Run is intended to popularize the upcoming 35th National Games (Jan 31-Feb 14) that will be held at 30 venues across seven districts of the state. Tendulkar is the goodwill ambassador of the Games. According to state’s Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, the event’s highlight, however, would be the participation of a 95-year-old retired school teacher. “Each group would run around 500 meters. The highlight of the event is that the oldest participant would be 95year-old Chellama, a retired school teacher, who will run at the school she studied in Kottayam,” the minister told reporters here Tuesday. “The governor will first flag off the run here in front of the state secretariat and then join the run which will culminate about 500 meters at the Central Stadium. Then we will have a meeting too,” he said. Radhakrishnan said the event would be held across the length and breadth of the state and probably be the biggest mass run ever held. It is to be held across 7,000 points in Kerala for which 14 district collectors are coordinating. “The response has been tremendous and this is certainly going to enter the Guinness World Records,” said Radhakrishnan. Other participants joining the mass run will include former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan, religious heads,

eminent sportspersons, and film stars. The minister said that despite the very short period that the state got, “it has done a wonderful job in getting ready all the infrastructure in a very short span of less than two years”. Starting Wednesday, the chief minister will inaugurate 10 different venues that have either been newly-built or renovated. Seven venues have already been inaugurated. “Normally, states holding this event get the dates of the event at least four years before, all that we got was under seven months and it was a Herculean effort to get things done,” the minister said. “The Indian Olympic Association officials will be in the state for two days later this week and once they finish, the venues will be opened for media,” he added. Radhakrishnan acknowledged the media criticism about the national games and delays, saying he has taken it positively.

t may sound bizarre but the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa in Sri Lanka’s presidential battle is a huge slap for LTTE supporters who had called for an election boycott by Tamils. Hardcore supporters of the militarily vanquished Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the West wanted Tamils living in the north and east of the island to stay away from the January 8 election. Musharraf indicted in IS issues more threats, US on alert Akbar Bugti’s murder case IANS, NEW YORK

ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Pakistan’s Quetta city has indicted former president Pervez Musharraf in a case related to the murder of Balochistan leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti in 2006, Dawn reported. Despite the ATC’s repeated orders, the former military dictator did not appear in the court Wednesday. In the court, Musharraf’s counsel Zeeshan Cheema submitted a medical report and requested an exemp-

tion from appearance for the former president. Counsel said Musharraf was undergoing back pain and therefore he would be unable to appear in the court. Turning down the request, the court ordered the indictment of Musharraf, former interior minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and former home minister of Balochistan Mir Shoaib Nowsherwani in the Baloch leader’s murder. The court, however, said Musharraf would be granted exemption from appearance in the court only after the medical board would apprise it about the former army chief’s health. The hearing of the case was subsequently adjourned to February 4. Bugti was killed in August 2006 in an explosion in a cave where he had taken refuge during a military crackdown ordered by Musharraf, who was then the country’s president.

Tevar, which is one of the most engaging Bollywood masala dossiers in recent months, takes us through the crowded ‘gallis’, ‘mohallas’ and ‘akhadas’ of Agra and Mathura in search of that elusive thing called love. This is a love story where most of the playing-time is devoted to the protagonists locked in a scuffle of the most physical and violent kind. And yet, there’s a core of tenderness in the film, manifested in Sonakshi Sinha’s melting pleading eyes as she makes a run away from the city’s arch-goon Gajender Singh (Manoj Bajpayee, bang-on), who has taken a shine to her. Mind you, it’s not a lecher’s lascivious love. It’s true love. Bajpayee interprets the besotted goon’s character with such intuitive warmth that you almost feel sorry for this vicious uncouth ‘katta’-carrying ruffian turning into jelly when love strikes at a dance perfor-

Bajpayee’s character’s love for the spirited Radhika would have made for a more interesting case-study on the wayward ways of the heart than the other liaison between the hero and the heroine. As the love-smitten sociopath, Bajpayee instills inner reserves of wicked unexpectedness in scenes that seem to be written to accentuate the demoniacal duffer’s embarrassing attempts to be romantic. At the end of the day, Tevar is a showcase for Arjun Kapoor’s heroics, so much so that the hero’s friends are reduced to a babbling blur. This is Arjun Kapoor’s oneway ticket to some ‘hero-giri’.

"As an actress, we need to kill those cat-fight things. I called Kangana (Ranaut) when I watched Queen, I called Deepika (Padukone) after Cocktail. I was like more than excited about it. "Katrina is my favorite co-star because I had such a good relationship with her. She is a real person and not pretentious. I had a great time working with her (in Jab Tak Hai Jaan). I know she feels happy for me," she said. ctor Bipasha Basu says shooting steamy scenes with Karan Singh Grover in Alone was not an uncomfortable experience for her thanks to the friendship the duo had struck up before the shoot. Bipasha calls Karan a "brat and a chatterbox". "It's a good thing because all the ice broke on day one. The question of discomfort is not there as you already have a rapport. Both of us had developed a friendship before we went to Kerala to shoot the intimate scenes and the Katra song," she said. The sensual scenes between the two have raised quite a few eyebrows, but the trailer and the film's songs have grabbed eyeballs before the movie's release on January 16. Directed by Bhushan Patel, Alone will see Bipasha in the role of conjoined twins. The shooting was tough for her.

All this was physically exhausting,” Nikki told IANS. “We shot the whole movie in a single schedule in a house for 35 days, mostly during the night. We didn’t sleep in the nights for nearly a month. Nikki still considers the role as one of the best she’s done so far in her career. “I think one should be really fortunate to get such a character. Agreed that I play a ghost and the getup is not pretty but I won’t be seen as a ghost throughout. The ghost, for whom the audience will root for, appears periodically, and I’ll also be seen in my normal looks,” she added.

CHENNAI: The highly intriguing trailer of actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan-starrer Uttama Villain was unveiled online on January 13 by the film’s producer Linguswamy. Kamal plays an ageing superstar as well as an eighth century theatre artist Kamal Haasan in the film which is directed by his friend and actor Ramesh Aravind. Late legendary filmmaker K. Balachander has essayed an important role in the film, which also features ace Telugu director K. Vishwanath. The film also starred Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah and Parvathy Nair.

Controlling hunger during shoot was tough: Vikram ctor Vikram, who lost about nearly 50 percent of his original body weight to play one of the roles in forthcoming Tamil magnum opus “I”, found it tough to control his urge to eat. “It was extremely difficult to control hunger. It drove me crazy,” Vikram told IANS. In I, which is directed by Shankar, the 48-year-old actor plays dual role of a body builder and a hunchbacked disfigured man. “For the role of the bodybuilder, I had to beef up and work out extensively in the gym to have a muscular body. I could’ve easily achieved that with the help of steroids, but I avoided it despite being wooed into using it by professionals,” he said. “It was for the role of the disfig-

Jaya, who is ready with her next project, says one should not compromise on time when it comes to scripting as it’s a creative process. “One of the reasons why I didn’t immediately make a film after ‘Lovely’ was I was busy scripting my next film. hy should a remake stay true to its original? And this question is applicable to Gopala Gopala, which as the remake of Hindi hit 2012 film OMG: Oh My God! does full justice to the original but doesn’t show any sign of creativity to stand out. Agreed remakes are tested-and-

proven, but it doesn’t stop a filmmaker from throwing in some creativity to give it a personal touch. With a thought-provoking universally appealing subject, there’s so

much one can do with a film like OMG. But sadly director Kishore Kumar Pardasani resorts to merely retelling the story in a different language with

different characters barring Mithun who’s retained from the Hindi version. The film Gopala Gopala is about an atheist Gopala Rao, who takes godmen and people’s blind faith in the almighty head on. He even decides to sue them when his shop is destroyed by an earthquake and the insurance company won’t compensate him because it’s an “act of god”. But you can’t watch Gopala Gopala with such expectations because it successfully reproduces scenes and characters from the original as though remaking is misunderstood as copying frame-to-frame.

12-YR JAIL FOR BURNING WIFE WITH BOILING OIL BY A STAFF WRITER

W

EST HAVEN, CT – A resident of Pakistani origin has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for pouring several cups of boiling oil on his estranged wife as she was sleeping. Mohammad Chaudhry had been charged with assault in the 1st degree for burning his wife on the night of December 18, 2013. At the time of the incident, Chaudhry and his wife had been separated for more than a year. She had gone that evening to see her teen-aged children and decided to sleep over in one of the kid’s rooms. According to court documents, at about 4:30 in the morning, Chaudhry put four to six cups of oil in a pot on the stove, then went to the room where his ex-wife was sleeping with one of her children next to her. Chaudhry ordered the child out of the

room, and then returned with the pot of hot oil which he poured over the sleeping woman, allegedly attempting to scar her face. After his arrest, the unemployed man repeatedly asked the police whether his wife’s face had been disfigured. He told the police he had burned his

ex-wife because he believed she was having an affair with another man. One of the sons called the police to say his mother was dying. He later told law enforcement authorities that it looked as though his mother’s skin was melting off her body. Chaudhry’s wife spent 29 days in the hospital, undergoing four skin grafts for third degree burns throughout much of her upper body. She still retains residual scars from the heinous attack. But during Chaudhry’s sentencing, the victim asked for a lesser sentence for her ex-husband, saying he had made a terrible mistake. Chaudhry’s daughter said her mother had recovered from the attack, and noted that her father was a great dad. As he handed down the sentence, Milford County Superior Court Judge Frank Ianotti said Chaudhry’s domestic violence against his wife stopped just short of murder, and such actions of domestic

EW YORK — A fire broke out early in the morning of January 13 at Penn Station in New York City, the second fire in two days at a major northeast transit hub. On the previous day, one person died and hundreds were evacuated from L’Enfant Plaza station, one of the busiest on the Washington, D.C., Metro line. The fire in New York broke out at about 2:30 am, and by 4 am, heavy smoke was billowing into the street, forcing an evacuation of both the station and a residential building across the street. Dozens of firefighters were working both on the surface and underground to determine the source of the fire. Penn station serves both Amtrak and commuter lines for New York, New Jersey and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) . Fourteen lines of the New York City subway system (Metropolitan Transit Authority, or MTA) connect in the station. Almost a half million people each day pass through its corridors. The LIRR says some trains could be diverted to Atlantic terminal in Brooklyn or Hunterspoint Avenue in Queens. It says trains are being canceled at Jamaica Terminal in Queens. Extensive delays are expected on all westbound LIRR trains. NYC Transit is cross-honoring LIRR fares on four lines, the 2, 3, 7 and E. A LIRR spokesman says there was no damage to platform and track areas. Three subway lines, the A, E and C, which had been bypassing Penn Station, ran with residual delays.

violence could not be overlooked by the court. Chaudhry’s attorney Matthew Gaidos noted that his client was bipolar, but has never been diagnosed or treated. He noted in court that the victim and her daughter had forgiven the violent man. The attorney stated that Chaudhry “deeply regretted” his actions. The family had been in turmoil; Chaudhry’s wife had asked him for a divorce in 2006, but the two were not yet divorced at the time of the attack. In the 13 months since the brutal incident, Chaudhry has been in custody on $750,000 bail. He faces deportation back to Pakistan after completing his prison term. Chaudhry also must serve five years’ probation and undergo mental health counseling. The court also granted the victim a permanent restraining order against Chaudhry.

TLANTA, GA -- Mit Shah, Indian Am NEW YORK — Various microorganisms that naturally colonize the skin may help protect us from infections as they trigger specific responses in the skin immune system to fight invasion by pathogens, according to new research involving an Indian American scientist. These microbes that colonize the skin are generally referred to as commensals. Each type of microbe triggers unique aspects of the immune system, suggesting that immune cells found in the skin can rapidly sense and respond to changes in microbial communities, the findings showed. “These findings reveal that the skin immune landscape is a highly dynamic environment that can be rapidly and specifically remodeled by encounters with defined commensals,” said Shruti Naik from Rockefeller University, New York. “ T h e f i n d i n g s h a ve p ro f o u n d implications for our understanding of tissue-specific immunity and pathologies,” Naik added. The researchers found that mice colonized with S. epidermidis were protected against infection with a diseasecausing fungus. This was because S. epidermidis

increased the number of CD8+ T immune cells, which produced the chemical messenger IL-17A. Depleting CD8+ T cells or neutralizing IL-17A removed this protective effect. Dendritic cells, another type of immune cell, played a key role in generating this specific, non-inflammatory response. The ability of different microbes to trigger distinct aspects of the immune system without causing inflammation opens the possibility of discovering new immune-boosting substances that may be added to vaccines or medications.

REFEREE GETS STICK FOR SLUR ON INDIAN

A

BY A STAFF WRITER

TLANTA, GA -- Mit Shah, Indian American CEO and founder of Atlanta, Ga.-based Nobel Investment Group, on January 5 tweeted that a referee targeted him with an ethnic slur at an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) basketball game on January 4. According to Shah, referee Karl Hess told him near the end of Wake Forest’s 85-76 loss to 5th ranked Louisville, “When I’m older, I want to sit in your seat and watch your Egyptian ass ref a game.” Shah was born in New Jersey and grew up in Winston-Salem, N.C. The ACC, which investigated the incident, said Hess would not work any more games this season. “It’s a sad day and is devastating,” Hess said. “But I’m responsible.” Since officials are independent contractors on season-to-season contracts, it is unlikely Hess will ever work another ACC game.

Mit Shah

Hess has been a controversial figure at ACC basketball games in the last two years, in particular games involving North Carolina State. In February 2012, former North Carolina State basketball stars Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani were ejected from their seats behind

the scorer’s table by Hess during a game in Raleigh. At the time, Hess told ACC officials that the former players weren’t ejected for anything they said, but for “excessive demonstration on several calls.” The league reviewed the incident and publicly reprimanded Hess. In December, Hess worked an N.C. State game in Raleigh for the first time since he ejected Gugliotta and Corchiani. Fans booed him every time he made a call, and he further angered them when he called a technical foul on N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried just four minutes into the game against Wofford. Wofford won on a last-second shot and fans threw trash at Hess as he left the court. Hess is a veteran of six Final Fours and nine ACC title games. Shah is currently board chairman of LaQuinta Holdings, president of Marriott International’s MINA board and an owners’ board member of Hyatt Hotels Corp.

The SEC also won a $13.9 million civil fine that wasn’t at issue in the Supreme Court appeal. Gupta, 66, was convicted of passing illegal tips to Raj Rajaratnam, a co-founder of the Galleon Group hedge fund. Rajaratnam received an 11-year sentence, and both men are serving their sentences in a federal prison in Massachusetts.

ASHINGTON, DC -An Indian American man from Edison, New Jersey, Shayam Sridhar, 21, has been charged with setting fire to a hallway and a classroom in the Allison Road classroom building at Rutgers University in Piscataway last week. Sridhar was charged with seconddegree aggravated arson after he allegedly set fire to a 30-foot section of the hallway and an adjoining classroom on the second floor earlier this month. According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, Sridhar had been a student at Rutgers, but left in the fall term. He was set to return to Rutgers in the spring 2015 semester. Sridhar was charged after authorities identified him from a photo obtained during the investigation. Bail was set at $75,000 and Sridhar was being held at Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick. The police did not disclose a motive in the Busch Campus fire. The blaze, which was extinguished by the overhead sprinkler system, caused $250,000 in damage. Nobody was injured in the fire, but it forced the evacuation of 210 students who were taking a final exam in a firstfloor auditorium.

The collaboration between the School of Cinematic Arts and the Viterbi School of Engineering Department of Computer Science helped make USC the No. 1 ranked game design school in North America in 2014 by The Princeton Review. USC Games hosted two events unveiling student-designed games. “We have such a range of games— in virtual reality, two screen experiences, mobile and more. I’m so proud of this year’s cohort because they are really stretching themselves and innovating in the field,” said Tracy Fullerton, director of USC Games, chair of the School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media and Games Division and director of the USC Game Innovation Lab.

The money, house, business, charity, possessions or flat simply cannot wait and between now and 20th February you will do more in four weeks than you did in four months. Talk to experts outside the situation as often as possible.

Babies, children or younger people? Serious sexual relationships? It’s all there to be contained and controlled for the next four weeks. Without a concerted effort to keep everything in check, you may find yourself feeling all at sea.

Leo

Virgo The man or woman who is pushing all your buttons this week is actually a red herring. The real issue is your own inability to operate with clear and firm boundaries. Drawing a line in the sand is no good.

Scorpio

Sagittarius Everyone deserves an escape hatch and you regularly use your house, flat, family, household, home town or country as a way out. Escaping from the real world in this way, could lead you into the most muddled situation.

Capricorn The internet, the media, the telephone and the written word are all easy outlets which allow you to get as far away as possible from what is all too real. This is fine as far as it goes.

Aquarius Everything you own, earn or owe will be affected by the Pisces stellium, between now and the end of next month. The trick is to create a separate, special financial, business, property, shopping or charity space in your life.

Pisces A huge number of heavenly bodies in Pisces — from Mars and Bacchus, to Proserpina, Psyche and Salacia — underlines just how crucial your reputation, name, appearance and image is to the rest of your life.

Sunbathing may affect fertility New finding shows that increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation during years of high solar activity had an effect across generations IANS, LONDON

N

orwegian researchers have found that children born in years with lots of solar activity had a higher probability of dying compared to those who were born in the years with less sunlight. On average, the lifespan of children born in years that had a great deal of solar activity was 5.2 years shorter than other children. The largest difference was in the probability of dying during the first two years of life. “There are probably many fac-

tors that come into play but we have measured a long-term effect over generations. The conclusion is that you should not sunbathe if you are pregnant and want to have a lot of grandchildren,” said lead researcher Gine Roll Skjaervoe from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s (NTNU) department of biology. The team also found that children who were born in years with lots of sunshine and who survived were also more likely to have fewer children, who, in turn, gave birth to fewer chil-

dren than others. The finding shows that increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation during years of high solar activity had an effect across generations.

For the findings, Skjaervoe studied church records from the period 1750-1900 involving 9,000 people. Skjaervoe used information on the number of sunspots as an indication of the amount of UV radiation in a given year. The number of sunspots reaches a maximum every 11 years on average, which results in more UV radiation on Earth during years with high sunspot and solar activity. UV radiation can have positive

effects on human vitamin D levels but it can also result in a reduction of vitamin B9 (folate). It is known that low folate levels during pregnancy are linked to higher child mortality. The study also showed that families from the lowest socioeconomic groups were most affected by UV radiation. Women who worked in the fields were more exposed to the sun than other women. In many cases they also had a poorer diet. The interesting study appeared in the journal the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Online avatar can help Be optimistic to have a healthy heart you make friends IANS, NEW YORK

T

IANS, TORONTO

O

nline avatars with open eyes, a smile or grin, an oval face, brown hair and/or a sweater were more likely to elicit friendship intentions, researchers from Canada’s York University say. In contrast, a neutral expression or any other expression other than a smile, black hair, short hair, a hat, and/or sunglasses are less likely to elicit friendship intentions. An avatar is typically an image that represents the self in the virtual world. Avatars allow individuals to express or suppress various physical or psychological traits in a digital world. Previous research has shown that individuals typically choose and prefer avatars perceived to be similar to themselves. In the first phase of the study, participants created customized avatars and in the second phase of the study a different set of participants viewed and rated the avatars created in the first phase. The researchers found that when rating avatars created by females, perceivers tended to rate them as being more contentious and open, even after taking into account the creator’s

actual traits. Based on previous studies, the researchers expected to see individuals relying on gender associations to inform their personality judgments. Surprisingly, avatar gender did not influence judgments in typical gender stereotypic directions. “One possibility is that digital contexts activate different gender stereotypes than in real-world contexts, but more research is necessary to explore this,” said lead researcher Katrina Fong. Outgoing and sociable individuals tend to create avatars that communicate their personality. “People who are more agreeable and more typical of the general population in personality tend to create avatars that elicit friendship intentions of others,” added Fong.

he more optimistic you are, the better it is for your health. Those who have an upbeat outlook on life have significantly better cardiovascular health than that of the pessimists, new research has found. Optimism boosts overall health but its positive impact on the heart is even greater, the findings showed. “Individuals with the highest levels of optimism have twice the odds of being in ideal cardiovascular health compared to their more pessimistic counter-

parts,” said lead author Rosalba Hernandez, a professor of social work at the University of Illinois. “This association remains significant even after adjusting for socio-

demographic characteristics and poor mental health,” Hernandez added. The study examined associations between optimism and heart health in more than 5,100 adults. Participants’ cardiovascular health was assessed using seven metrics: blood pressure, body mass index, fasting plasma glucose and serum cholesterol levels, dietary intake, physical activity and tobacco use. People who were the most optimistic were twice as likely to have ideal cardiovascular health, and 55 percent more likely to have a total health score in the intermediate range, the researchers found.

Tension with mom may affect sex life in adulthood IANS, LONDON

A

strained relationship with your mother in childhood may put you at the risk of developing sexual health issues like erectile dysfunction in adulthood, a new survey demonstrates. The survey, conducted by the Charles University in Prague, asked 960 men aged between 15

and 88 about their sexual habits like premature ejaculation and the duration of lovemaking. One explanation for this finding is that psychogenic factors (when a physical illness stems from an emotional stress) may play a more important role. Those who didn’t say the ‘love’ word until later in life also had problems in the bedroom.
