Modi, Obama hit one for the road, partners in defense

PM Modi’s fourth visit in two years saw a flurry of crucial agreements ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

C

all it President Barack Obama’s desire to seal his legacy or the Trump effect, as some pundits would have it, he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated his fourth visit to the US in two years with a flurry of agreements, including one in which the US commits itself to sharing defense technology with India “to a level commensurate with that of its closest allies and partners”.

These ranged from climate change to the vexed civil nuclear deal to US recognition of India as a major defense partner to a call on Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai and 2016 Pathankot terrorist attacks to justice.

Marking a big upswing in IndiaUS relations in the last two years, the upshot of Modi’s tte--tte with “my friend Barack” at the White House on June 7 was that the “good story continues” in the words of Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar.

Some icing on the cake came ahead of the third major ModiObama summit with reports that none of the 34 current members of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) had objected to India’s entry to the exclusive club.

Jaishankar would not go beyond saying that India had indeed applied for entry into MTCR, but the joint statement noted “the leaders looked forward to India’s imminent entry” into the club. Beijing is not a member of MTCR, but it is standing in the way of India’s entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) at the behest of Pakistan.

And though the membership of the two clubs is not directly linked, if India was found good for entry into one non-proliferation regime, it should be good for the other too, Jaishankar suggested.

Obama endorses Hillary Clinton for US president WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama formally threw his support behind presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in a web video on June 9.

“I don’t think there’s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office,” Xinhua quoted Obama as saying in the video posted on Clinton’s Facebook page. “I’m with her. I’m fired up and I cannot wait to get out there and campaign with Hillary,” he said.

The former first lady said on Twitter that she was “honored” to have the president’s support and her campaign announced that Obama would join Clinton for a public event next Wednesday in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Obama’s endorsement came just moments after his meeting with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s rival in the nomination race, and according to Earnest, Sanders “was not surprised” by Obama’s endorsement. Although he still declined to endorse Clinton at the moment.

Sanders told reporters after the meeting that he would do everything “to make sure Donald Trump does not become president of the US”. He said the real-estate mogul “would be a disaster” for the US. As the Democratic primary season was all but over, the notion of party unity had become a crucial topic in the Democratic field. So far, Sanders had offered mixed response as to what his next step would be after being mathematically eliminated from the race.

India’s membership of NSG from Switzerland ahead of a meeting of the Group later this month, Modi thanked Obama for backing New Delhi’s bid for both the MTCR and NSG clubs.

On climate change, the joint statement said “both countries are committed to working together and with others” for the ratification and full implementation of the Paris Agreement “as early as possible”.

US officials suggested that like the US, India had agreed to join the Paris agreement “this year”. But the Indian side stuck to the formulation in the joint statement saying, “India

similarly has begun its processes to work toward this shared objective.”

The New York Times suggested that would-be Republican nominee “Donald J. Trump can claim at least some of the credit” for the ModiObama understanding on the Paris climate agreement.

Since Trump has vowed to “cancel” the Paris agreement if elected, Obama is working hard to ensure that it becomes binding before he leaves office next January.

On his part, “Modi wants to get as much as he can out of Obama’s last months in office,” the Times cited Ashley J. Tellis, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, as saying.

The announcement that India will buy six nuclear reactors from Westinghouse by June 2017 under the stalled India-US civil nuclear deal signed in 2005 also removes another irritant in India-US relations.

And US recognition of India as a Major Defense Partner to facilitate "technology sharing with India to a level commensurate with that of its closest allies and partners" marked another milestone in the growing US-India defense relationship.

The understanding would give India “license-free” access to a wide range of dual-use technologies.

Modi praises Indian Americans for contributions WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the joint sitting of US Congress on June 8, praised the manifold contributions of the Indian-American community to the US. “Connecting our two nations is also a unique and dynamic bridge of three million Indian Americans,” Modi said.

“They are among your best CEOs, academics, scientists, economics, doctors, even spelling bee champions,” he said eliciting standing applause from the US lawmakers.

He also mentioned the popularity of yoga and said India has not yet claimed intellectual property rights for it.

“SIRI (Siri Peterson Cavanna yoga classes) tells us that India's ancient heritage of yoga has over 30 million practitioners in the US,” the Prime Minister said.

“And, we have not yet claimed intellectual property rights on yoga,” he stated adding a touch of humor.

Ahead of his speech to the joint sitting of the US Congress, Modi on June 8 met with the Congressional leadership.

As he arrived at Capitol Hill, the Prime Minister was received by House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan.

Modi is the fifth Indian Prime Minister after Rajiv Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao, Atul Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh to address a joint sitting of the US Congress.

‘US, India a win-win combo’ IANS, WASHINGTON

“India is the future human resource powerhouse of the world with a young hard-working population. In my vision, a partnership between American capital and innovation, and Indian human resource and entrepreneurship can be very powerful,” Modi said.

“I am convinced we can

strengthen both our economies through such a partnership,” said the prime minister to a packed audience that included the top brass of companies like PepsiCo, Master Card, Warburg Pincus, Lockheeed Martin, Boeing, Westinghouse, Intelsat, Emerson and 8Minute Energy.

The prime minister said his government will continue to strengthen the Make in India initiative, which was intended not only for manufacturing for the domestic market or import substitution but was also about making world-class

products and services for the whole globe.

“That is why, for us, improvements towards free trade are important. It is very important for us that developed countries open their markets not only to goods from countries like India but also to services. I see this as a win-win proposition for the US and for India.”

He also held out an assurance: “We will continue to make our tax policies more predictable.”

Earlier, the office bearers of USIndia Business Council said their members have already invested $28 billion in India since September 2014 and that another $45 billion was in the pipeline, even by a conservative estimate.

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, specifically said the US-based global e-commerce major had pledged another $3 billion investment in India in addition to the $2 billion that was announced in 2014 and had created over 45,000 jobs in India.

khilesh Yadav, the 43year-old Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, has weathered many a crisis on the family and political fronts in the last four years. But the Mathura carnage that claimed 29 lives could hurt him the most in the run-up to assembly polls in the state early next year.

The Mathura violence last week, even Yadav’s most ardent admirers admit in private, has “brought to his doorstep the biggest challenge” to his four-year-old rule.

“From other small things to Muzaffarnagar riots, Bhaiyya-ji (as he is known) has faced a lot, but Mathura seems to be the deepest wound of all,” a close aide told IANS, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Pointing to the many developmental works and projects being done in the state, he rued that all has been undone by the violence at Mathura’s Jawaharbagh Park last week in which two police bravehearts too died. While Akhilesh was unusually quick to admit the gaping holes in the state’s intelligence setup, which first let him down in Muzaffarnagar and now in Mathura, the damage seem to has been done.

Javadekar rejects claim by IITM study NEW DELHI: Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on June 7 rejected the claims of a study released by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) which said that “life expectancy in Delhi has reduced by six years because of air pollution”.

Javadekar said the claim made by the study was ‘incorrect’ as it was not based on real data and that the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) will give a reply soon.

PATNA: Sensing trouble over ongoing investigation into Class 12 merit list muddle, Bihar School Examination Board Chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh resigned on June 8, officials said.

“Under pressure to quit, Singh has resigned,” an official of the education department said.

According to reports, a special investigation team of Bihar Police probing the case after an FIR was lodged, is likely to detain Singh for interrogation.”

Microsoft sets up cyber security centre NEW DELHI: Microsoft on June 7 said it has set up a Cyber Security Engagement Centre (CSEC) in Gurgaon near here.

The CSEC aims to drive the public-private partnership to fight cyber crime, strengthen cooperation with Indian businesses, government and academic organisations on cyber security. The Gurgaon centre will serve as a dedicated hub for Microsoft in India.

Congress may constitute advisory board at top IANS, NEW DELHI

een on an organisational revamp, the Congress may constitute an advisory board of senior leaders, led by party president Sonia Gandhi, to deliberate upon key policy issues and important party matters, Congress sources here said on June 7.

The board, which could be constituted after the Rajya Sabha biennial elections on June 11, is likely to include senior leaders who held key portfolios during the United Progressive Alliance government, including P. Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Sushil Kumar Shinde.

There has been renewed talk of organisational revamp in the party after the party’s poor performance in assembly elections in four major states last month.

The Congress problems have been mounting ever since. While party leader and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi announced formation of his own party on Monday, six party legislators in Tripura on Tuesday joined the Trinamool Congress.

In another blow, Congress general secretary Gurudas Kamat on Monday announced he was quitting the party and the political arena.

The party has over the last year seen some of its satraps leave and join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Biswa Sarma joined the BJP last year whereas former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna joined the BJP last month.

The Congress is also facing uncertainty over the elevation of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as the party chief.

There have been recurrent speculations and renewed demands that Rahul Gandhi take up the mantle from his mother Sonia Gandhi who has steered the party for 18 years.

The sources said if an advisory board is indeed formed, it will signal the party’s moving towards Rahul Gandhi’s elevation. They said it will also reflect a collective and consultative leadership within the Grand Old Party. Sonia Gandhi had headed the national advisory councils during the previous two UPA governments and is also likely to head the advisory board.

t least 25 Indian students in their first semester of computer sciences programme at Western Kentucky University have been asked to return to India or find placement in other schools because they did not meet the admission standards of the varsity, The New York Times said on Tuesday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a US visit.

Some 60 Indian students were enrolled for the programme in January and the university was said to have used international recruiters to enrol them.

James Gary, the chairman of Western Kentucky’s computer science programme, told the Times that “almost 40” of the students did not meet the requirements of their admissions, even though they were offered remedial help by the university. This means that 35 students may be allowed to continue while 25 “must leave”, the newspaper said.

olleagues and a former school teacher of IndianAmerican Mainak Sarkar have expressed shock and sadness over news of the researcher fatally shooting his wife and a University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) professor before turning the gun on himself.

Sarkar, 38, fatally shot engineering professor William Klug, 39, in his office at the UCLA on Wednesday. Klug had refused to give him a passing grade.

Before killing Klug, he killed his wife Ashley Hasti, who was found dead in Brooklyn Park, in Minnesota.

He passed his ICSE exam from St. Michael’s School in Durgapur town of West Bengal’s Burdwan district, before clearing Class 11 and 12 from another shcool.

Mass grave found near newly-freed Fallujah BAGHDAD: Iraqi forces found a mass grave containing about 400 decomposed bodies in a newlyfreed town northwest of Islamic State (IS) stronghold Fallujah, a source said on June 6.

During a mine clearing operation on June 5 in Shuhadaa district, security forces discovered the burial site believed to contain the bodies of both security members and civilians, Xinhua quoted the source as saying.

“Most of the bodies have been shot in the head, apparently by IS extremist militants,” he said.

he Supreme Court on june 6 reserved its verdict on the Karnataka government’s appeal challenging acquittal of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and three others in a corruption case even as Karnataka sought attachment of assets of the six companies used for channelizing the alleged ill-gotten wealth.

Counsel for the state told the vacation bench of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Amitava Roy that these companies were used as “receptacles of ill-gotten

cash for which no explanation was given during investigation nor during the trial”.

A Bengaluru trial court by its September 24, 2014 verdict had directed the confiscation of the properties registered in the name of six companies to the state government. However, the Karnataka High Court by its May 11, 2014 verdict, had set aside the confiscation.

Karnataka transport minister promotes electric vehicles IANS, BENGALURU

arnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy rode on a battery-driven bicycle on June 5 here to promote greater use of electric vehicles and mark the World Environment Day. “Electric vehicles are future of road transport as they are economical, energy eco-friendly and energy efficient. Technologies have to be developed to make them affordable, sustainable and safe for all,” he said.

Flagging off a 15km electric vehicles rally in the city’s southern suburb, Reddy said the state government was encouraging people to use more electric cars and bikes by waiving road taxes on them so as to reduce air pollution and car-

bon emission.

“Promotional events like car and bike rallies, exhibitions and work-

shops will not only create awareness on benefits of electric vehicles to commute, but also inspire peo-

ple to switch over from petrol and diesel vehicles,” he said.

Exhorting people to participate in such events in large numbers to set an example, Reddy said the need for using electric vehicles was more in cities like Bengaluru, which is choking with around six million petrol and diesel vehicles.

“If majority of people use electric cars and bikes for commuting in and around the city, Bengaluru will be a better place to live again, with clean air and greenery as in the past,” he said.

Responding to the minister’s call, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation Managing Director Ekroop Caur said the state-run operator was keen on using more electric buses though some of them

were being used on pilot basis.

“As evolving with changing times is essential for sustenance, electric vehicles will be the new transport mode as they are ecofriendly, cost-effective and pollution-free. We are keen on learning and adapting them through strategic tie-ups,” Caur said .

BMTC was first in the country to launch a battery-operated zero emission bus service in February 2014 on trial basis with trips on main routes across the city.

As the imported vehicle was cost prohibitive (Rs.2.7 crore) and its battery needed six hour charging for plying 250 km, its service was discontinued after three months though it was popular with commuters.

erbian tennis star Novak Djokovic on June 5 won his first French Open title, after defeating Britain’s Andy Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in 3 hours and three minutes in an overcast day here, thus becoming the eighth man in history to complete the career Grand Slam.

It was his fourth Grand Slam title in a row. The last man to hold all titles at the same time was Rod Laver in 1969.

It was the British World No.2 who made the stronger start as he won four of the first five games after dropping serve in the opening game.

He was able to dictate play with his powerful serve and then easily served out the set at 6-3.

In the second set, Murray got an early break point but Djokovic snuffed that out and held serve in the opening game. Murray’s first serve began to falter and the World No.1 was able to gradually stamp his

NEW DELHI: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) launched a global scouting programme on june 7 to identify players for the U-16 team presently preparing for the U-17 World Cup. The U-17 World Cup is scheduled to be held in India during September-October 2017.

The programme has been named the SAI-AIFF Overseas Scouting Project (OSP). It will kick-off with on-field trials in Dubai on June 10-11 for 2000 and 2001 born boys residing in the United Arab Emirates and nearby states/countries, AIFF said.

The programme is targeted at boys currently holding Indian passports. It will move to other countries in the coming months.

An online video management platform will be launched after the Dubai trials for eligible players residing outside India to submit their playing videos.

Former Mr. Universe Manohar Aich dies IANS, KOLKATA

F

ormer Mr Universe and celebrated body-builder Manohar Aich died at his home here following old age-related health complications, family sources said. He was 104.

A widower, Aich is survived by his two sons and two daughters.

Fully fit till some time back, Aich breathed his last at his Baguiati home in northeastern Kolkata at 2.30 p.m. on June 4. As he had earlier signed a pledge to donate his body posthumously it was handed over to the R.G Kar Medical college and hospital.

“He died around 2.30 p.m. He was 104 years old,” his son told IANS. Aich won the Mr Universe title in 1952, and was given the name “Pocket Hercules” due to his four feet, 11 inch frame.

In 1950, at the age of 36, Aich won the Mr Hercules contest. In 1951 he had finished second in the Mr Universe contest and he stayed

back in London to have another go in the Pro-Short division, eventually winning it a year later.

“If you exercise daily, you won’t fall ill. When you are young, you train to build but when you are old you train to maintain,” he said in an interview years back.

uhammad Ali was not a mere boxer, he was much more, the greatest as he claimed and adored by millions around the globe. He was not loved for his amazing boxing skills alone, more for his endearing beliefs.

He was an inspiration for not only sports persons but also to millions around the world. His fearlessness gave the blacks the confidence to fight for their rights.

Born on January 17, 1942 as Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville, a small town in Kentucky alongside the Ohio river, Ali was the first to win the world heavyweight title three times.

Clay first shot to fame at the global level by winning the lightheavyweight gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics as a supremely talented 18-year-old.

Strangely for a boxer who knocked down fearsome opponents in the ring with such flamboyance, Clay at first refused to travel with the US boxing squad to Rome due to his fear of flying.

Eventually, he bought a second hand parachute and wore it on the flight. It was worth all the effort.

On September 5, 1960 he beat Zbigniew Pietrzykowski of Poland to become the Olympic champion.

He received a hero’s welcome when the team returned to New York, but the reality of the segregated US society hit home when he got back to Kentucky and was refused a table in a restaurant. Ali claimed in his 1975 autobiography that it prompted him to throw away his Olympic medal in disgust.

He turned professional soon after with Angelo Dundee -- who would contribute so much to his boxing success -- as his trainer.

Clay stunned the critics and boxing fans around the globe by defeating the seemingly unbeatable Sonny Liston to become the world heavyweight boxing champion at the age of 22. In the build up to the fight, Clay had taunted Liston and predicted that he will win by knockout. He coined one of his most famous quotes, “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, his hands can’t hit what his eyes can’t see”

When the legend was in Kolkata KOLKATA: Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, who passed away at the age of 74 in the US late on June 3, had described Jack Johnson as the greatest boxer of all time during a visit to the city during Christmas in 1990.

Ali, who had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for 32 years until his death, was here on a personal visit and stayed in the city for three days.

Veteran boxing administrator Asit Banerjee, who saw Ali from close quarters during the visit, says it was an “emotional” feeling.

“I had met him in Karachi before, but 1990 was an emotional experience. I considered him an icon and here I was meeting him again. I could touch him, sit and talk to him. People called him ‘The Greatest’, many called him ‘God’ but I cannot express the feeling in words,” Banerjee said.

Banerjee said the three time World Heavyweight boxing champion had then denied he was the ‘Greatest’ boxer of all time.

“In 83’ (in Karachi) he was full of force. He asked me, ‘who says I am the greatest’?, I said, ‘You have only said it sometime back’, Banerjee recalled.

Will Smith to be pallbearer for the champion’s funeral LOS ANGELES: Actor Will Smith and former professional boxer Lennox Lewis have been named as pallbearers at late boxing legend Muhammad Ali’s funeral, which will take place on June 10.

Smith, who portrayed the boxer in the 2001 film about his life called “Ali”, and Lennox will be among the 15,000 people who are expected to attend the funeral service in Louisville, reports express.co.uk.

LOS ANGELES (CALIFORNIA): An old video recorded in 1981 has gone viral on the internet as it captured a priceless moment of boxing legend Muhammad Ali saving a man from committing suicide, a truly heroic action from a real-life hero.

In the video recorded by CBS News, Ali volunteered to go up onto the ledge of the ninth floor of a building in Los Angeles and talked to a young man threatening to jump out from the window, reports Xinhua.

According to reports, back in 1981, Ali was hanging out when he heard people talking about a man sitting on a ledge of the Miracle Mile office building and preparing to end his life.

Police and members of the 21year-old’s family had all tried to reason with him but to no avail.

So the boxer rushed to the scene and after 20 minutes, Ali finally talked the man down.

The legendary boxer had been hospitalized several times in recent years, including in early 2015 with a severe urinary infection that was initially diagnosed as pneumonia.

A modern take on marriage Nelson Venkatesan’s film addresses marriage from the perspective of different people IANS, CHENNAI

D

ebutant director Nelson Venkatesan says forthcoming Tamil drama “Oru Naal Koothu”, a modern-day take on marriage, will be easily relatable to a majority of the audience.

“The story revolves around questions that arise when we talk about marriage. It will easily appeal to eight out of ten people in the audience. A decade or two ago people didn’t fear when it came to marriage. However, wedding comes with a lot of stress nowadays and it all boils down to impressing people on the day of the marriage,” Nelson told IANS. The film addresses marriage from the perspective of different people.

“The story is based on the experiences of many people from my own life. When it comes to marriage, there are so many problems lately,” Nelson said “People don’t want to get their daughter married to a lawyer or to those working in the media. We’ve tried to touch upon such issues too in the film,” he added.

It stars Dinesh, Mia George, Nivetha Pethuraj, Ritwika and Karunakaran.

“Oru Naal Koothu”, which releases in cinemas on Friday, happens to be Dinesh’s first release after the National award-winning

Tamil film “Visaaranai”.

Nelson said Dinesh found it difficult to detach himself from “Visaaranai”, because the role in the film took a toll on him.

huge prison set is being constructed under the supervision of National Award winning art director Thota Tharani for megastar Chiranjeevi’s upcoming 150th film, which is tentatively titled “Kathilantodu”.

“Some of the initial portion of the film takes place in a prison.

The team has been working on this set since the beginning of this month. Chiranjeevi will play one

of the inmates who escapes from the prison,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. To be directed by V.V. Vinayak, the film is the official Telugu remake of Tamil blockbuster “Kaththia.

Chiranjeevi will be seen essaying dual roles.

Ram Charan will be producing this project under his newly floated family banner.

The principal shooting will commence from June 20 in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City.

CHENNAI: The makers of Kamal Haasan-starrer “Sabaash Naidu”, which will simultaneously be made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi has gone on the floors in Los Angeles.

“First day’s shooting going smoothly for the two Naidus and one Kundu. Great dancers, great crew,” Haasan wrote on his Twitter page on June 7.

The film is a spinoff on the popular character Balram Naidu from Haasan’s 2010 Tamil film “Dasavatharam”.

In the film, which also features Shruti Haasan, Ramya Krishnan, Roger Narayanan and Saurabh Shukla, Haasan will return as RAW operative Balram Naidu.

While Shruti will play Haasan’s reel daughter, Ramya Krishnan will be seen as the wife.

Popular star comedian Brahmanandam will play Haasan’s sidekick in the film, which will be directed by T.K. Rajeev Kumar.

We hope audience will like the Dinesh they will see in the film,” he added.

Unlike his previous roles, Dinesh plays an urban character.

“He plays a guy from a small town who has shifted to a metropolitan,” Nelson said.

“Although he plays an urban character, you can still find the essence of a small-town guy in his character and the way it’s portrayed,” he added.

Nelson is all praise for his heroines - Mia, Nivetha and Ritwika.

“Mia plays an angelic character.

She has done justice to her role.

While Nivetha is a newcomer, you won’t find any sign of that in the film. Ritwika is extremely talented and she pulled off a different role very convincingly,” he explained.

Produced by Selva Kumar, the film has music by Justin Prabhakaran.

Dhansikaa to play prostitute in short film

ctress Dhansikaa, who will soon be seen in superstar Rajinikanth’s “Kabali”, is all set to play a prostitute in an upcoming yet-untitled Tamil short film to be directed by Anand Murthy.

“Dhansikaa jumped at the opportunity when she read what Anand had written. She was never keen to do short films, but this project really got her excited and she didn’t want to miss the opportunity,” a source told IANS. The source added that Dhan-

sikaa will appear in a never-seenbefore bold role and she has been prepping to get under the skin of the character over the last few weeks. Set against the backdrop of Kolkata, the film will also star actress Bidita Bag. “Bidita will play a documentary filmmaker. The story is about these two characters and what happens when they cross paths. It will be a powerful story and the film will feature dialogues in Tamil as well as Bengali,” the source said.

The regular shooting will start from later this week.

he makers of Bollywood film "Udta Punjab" are said to have been asked by the Revising Committee of the censor board to remove all references to Punjab — a decision perhaps taken under pressure from the ruling dispensation in the state which is dealing with a festering problem of drugs.

"Udta Punjab", a Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh starrer movie, delves into how the youth there have succumbed to drugs.

The release of the movie in a year when the state is less than nine months from assembly elections is likely to be seen as politically disastrous for the state’s ruling party, the Shrimoni Akali Dal which is a partner with the ruling-National Democratic Alliance at the Center.

ers had clarified that no ban was imposed on it. On Monday, reports emerged that the Revising Committee of the CBFC has asked the makers to make 89 cuts.

A source in the know of developments told IANS that the board’s primary demand is to remove all the references to Punjab, but the number of cuts is not clear as they are still awaiting an “official letter”.

“We haven’t received a letter yet.

We don’t know how many cuts, but we can tell you that their basic demand is that any reference of Punjab should be deleted from the movie... Which then means a lot of cuts,” the source told IANS. The source added: “They want the film to be set in a fictitious space and not Punjab. Makers are not going to adhere to it. They will

Studies done by various agencies and organizations in recent years have indicated that substance abuse, including drugs, is rampant across Punjab, especially in rural areas. The extent of the substance abuse is put by some surveys at over 70 per cent out of Punjab’s 2.8 crore population.

othing prepares you for the assault on all aesthetic consideration in this mirthless, and worthless, comedy.

Nothing at all. Not even the opening when Nikitin Dheer, Samir Kochhar and Arav Chowdhary loot jewellery like they had just seen "Dhoom: 2" for the third time.

Besides Akshay Kumar battling bravely to beef up the burlesque, there is no one to salvage the comedy about three losers (yes that’s how they are described by their girl friends) eyeing a London Gujarati millionaire’s wealth. Or maybe ‘eyeing’ is not the right word considering Riteish Deshmukh plays blind to obtain entry into the Gujarati’s mansion and millions.

Later Riteish turns paraplegic while Akshay turns blind, Abhishek turns….well, let’s just say he tries to mock some other human disability. One being interchangeable with another.

Perhaps one disability that Indian cinema needs to address is the failure to be funny in lowbrow comedies. Mocking the disabled, ridiculing skin color (one dark skinned child is described as “single-screen type”) and pervasively attacking good taste do not constitute the integral ingredients

of comedy.

It gets worse when the purported humor chooses to get repetitive for no other reason except to keep the proceedings moving even after the plot has lost all its steam.

The second-half is dotted with unmistakable evidence of a writer’s block. The gags virtually come to a standstill while the writers figure out ways to keep the spirit of comedy from collapsing completely.

Standing at the Center of this mirthless mess is Akshay Kumar trying to infuse life into irremediably dead scenes. He is saddled with the task of playing a split personality, a psychological vanity that the script is ill equipped to handle.

The “comedy” is much better off

BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- Two Indian American scientists, Ramesh Raliya and Pratim Biswas, at Washington University in St Louis have found a sustainable way to boost agricultural production in keeping with the increasing global population, during their research on the use of nanoparticle technology in agriculture.

Their epoch-making invention of an ecofriendly alternative to conventional phosphorusrich fertilizers is expected to usher in a new age of organic farming.

Pratim Biswas at Washington University in St Louis is a professor of environmental engineering science and Ramesh Raliya is a research scientist.

Both in the School of Engineering and Applied Science discovered that the use of zinc oxide nanoparticles in farming would not only improve the growth of food crops but also save water bodies from the polluting effects of phosphorus deposits.

Published in Washington University’s Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, the research by Ramesh Raliya and Pratim Biswas is the first study to highlight drawbacks of using conventional fertilizers in farming and benefits of using zinc oxide nanoparticles in fertilization of plants.

Bal Vihar celebrates Annual Day

BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- Bal Vihar celebrated its Annual Day recently, marking the completion of 23 years of Bal Vihar’s existence and delivering cultures and values to the local community.

Over the years, a large number of children of Indian origin has marched through the structured curriculum that inculcates the core value of Indian culture.

These children have grown to become a leader not only at their schools but also at workplaces and communities. These children have become the cultural leaders and are knitting culture, values, technology and education together to make this world a better place.

The theme for this year was “Kal, Aaj aur Kal” (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow). Through various songs and dances, the students showcased how India and its culture and evolved over the years. Many of the events showed a blend of ethnic culture, their talent and today’s world.

The show featured 35 different skits, dances and songs performed to the folk and Bollywood songs.

This year, Bal Vihar conducted a “Kaun Banega Ramayana Expert” – a quiz on Ramayana to see how much our students know about this great Indian Epic. At the annual day event, the winners were honored and the efforts and awareness of all the students were acknowledged.

Prior to the annual day on May 1, Bal Vihar organized a “Yoga/Bhajan Showcase”. This is another annual event where students present to their parents and other family members what they learned as part of Yoga and Bhajan. It was amazing to see them perform so well and in tandem.

At this event, all the students who graduated from regular Bal Vihar curriculum to the “Youth Program” were recognized with a plaque. These students transition their knowledge and culture to a much deeper and involved as a Bal Vihar Youth.

Gough speaks on best practices in translation

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, D.C. – Lance Gough, Executive Director of the Chicago Election Board, has credited the late Mayor Harold with inspiring the wide-ranging language outreach programs that the Chicago Election Board offers.

“Mayor Washington taught me that if you take care of the community, the community will take care of you,” Gough said. “In every community, we have to listen to the needs of all of the organizations, and we have to work together year-round, not just election time.”

Gough made the remarks as a guest speaker on the best practices for offering voter language assistance under the federal Voting Rights Act. The US Election Assistance Commission hosted the national gathering of election officials and voting-rights organizations.

By law, Chicago is required to offer ballots and language assistance in Spanish, Chinese and Hindi but also provides certain voter services in Polish and Korean.

“We have to be at the health fares, parades and ethnic celebrations registering people to vote. Just as important, we have to listen to the organizations’ needs,” Gough said.

“That’s how you build coalitions to pass laws for Election Day Registration, Online Registration and now Election Day Registration.

That’s how you can work together at election time to find poll workers, polling places and promoting options like vote by mail and early voting.”

Indian doc jailed for taking $174-k bribe

BY A STAFF WRITER AMESBURG, NJ -- An Indian American internal medicine physician practicing in Jamesburg, New Jersey, Dr. Paresh Patel, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for accepting bribes in exchange for patient referrals to a mobile diagnostic company.

Patel, 55, of Franklin Township, previously pleaded guilty before US District Judge Mary L. Cooper to information charging him with violating the Anti-Kickback Statute. Judge Cooper imposed the sentence on June 8 in Trenton federal court.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court: from September 2009 through December 2013, Patel accepted more than $174,000 in bribes for referring his patients to the Morris County-based mobile diagnostic testing company, Biosound Medical Services, operated by Nita K. Patel and Kirtish N. Patel (no relation to Paresh Patel).

According to the Justice Department, as part of the bribes, Biosound Medical Services paid Paresh Patel’s property tax obligations and home renovation expenses.

In addition to the prison term, Paresh Patel was also ordered to pay a $6,000 fine. He has also forfeited more than $174,000 he received as part of the bribery scheme.

Nita K. Patel and Kirtish N. Patel, pleaded guilty on November 17, 2015 to healthcare fraud for forging physician signatures on diagnostic reports that were never reviewed by a specialist physician and were actually authored by Kirtish N. Patel, who did not have a medical license.

Both await sentencing.

Concern over manual scavenging in India

BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, TX – The Association for India’s Development (AID) Boston and MIT chapters arranged an enlightening speech by Obalesh Bheemappa on a sensitive topic tilted, ‘Toward Eradicating Manual Scavenging’ on June 1 on the MIT campus.

The event was attended by the MIT scholars, students, and AID’s members among others from the greater Boston area.

Prof. Neeta Sane, sociology professor from Dnyanasadhana College (University of Mumbai) at Thane, Maharashtra, who has researched on sanitation workers and manual scavenging community in Maharashtra, said manual scavenging was the cleaning of human waste by communities considered low-caste, which was still practiced in India.

Obalesh Bheemappa, who hails from the Madiga community, narrated the pathetic life of manual scavengers in Karnataka and showed many photographs that depicted their most

Obalesh has been working with his team to eradicate manual scavenging through their organization -Thamate’s interventions in the Tumkur district.

Thamate is part of the Saphai Karmachari Kavalu Samithi (Sanitation Workers Watchdog Committee) in Karnataka, which investigates into atrocities committed on Saphai Karmachari workers and fights for justice and compensation in case of injury or death.

He emphasized that the main goal of the Thamate and their partners was just factfinding and making serious legal advocacy efforts.

The two speakers made the audience to think seriously about the harsh realities that are still existing in India and support such activists to eradicate such evil practices.

Teen threatens to gun down cops

BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY -- A Queens teenager put a note on his cellphone threatening to kill NYPD cops and used Bitcoins to purchase a fake ID, which he then used to buy a gun out of state, alleged authorities at his arraignment in Brooklyn federal court on June 8.

Late last month, FBI agents searched the Richmond Hill home of Ranbir Singh Shergill, 18, and found a loaded Glock 17 handgun and ammunition.

Shergill allegedly told the feds that he used the website Tor to spend $230 worth of Bitcoins on a fake ID that listed him as a 21-year-old from Ohio. He also admitted to travelling to Ohio to buy the gun.

An undated note on his phone outlined his plans to murder cops, authorities said.

Shergill was arraigned on charges of transporting a weapon across state lines.

Mayekar is Marshall Memorial Fellow

This cycle was one of the most competitive to date, with some 600 nominations for the 76 spots, meaning only ten per cent of nominated candidates were selected for the final awards.

The Indian American executive previously served in the Obama administration at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation and the White House. He has a B.A. in political science and international studies from Northwestern University.

Two-thirds of Indian kids not vaccinated on time

BY A STAFF WRITER NN ARBOR, MI -- India is a leading producer and exporter of vaccines but two-thirds of Indian children do not receive vaccinations on time, which makes them susceptible to diseases and contributes to untimely deaths.

Research conducted by the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health found that only 18 per cent of children are vaccinated with the recommended three doses of DPT vaccine, while about a third receive the measles vaccination by 10 months under the government-supported immunization program.

“This is a systemic problem,” said the study’s lead author, Nijika Shrivastwa, who recently finished her doctorate in epidemiology at University of Michigan and is now at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

“Immunizing a child six months after the recommended time period can have dramatic implications for a child’s

vulnerability to diseases,” the Indian American researcher said.

Although India is a leading producer and exporter of vaccines, the country has the greatest number of deaths among children under 5; the majority are from vaccine-preventable diseases.

“Every year, 26 million children are born in India--the greatest number by far of any country in the world,” said Matthew Boulton, senior associate dean for global public health at the U-M School of Public Health.

“Adding vast numbers of new children who need vaccination, while the older ones

remain under or unvaccinated because of immunization delays, is like walking too slowly on a moving treadmill--you continuously fall further back,” he said.

According to the University of Michigan, the researchers found that only 12 per cent of children are vaccinated with the measles vaccine by the required age of 9 months, although 75 per cent are vaccinated by age 5.

This delay in vaccination can contribute to frequent outbreaks of measles in India.

“Approximately, 95 per cent vaccination is required in a population to successfully stop measles outbreaks.

India’s childhood vaccination rate is simply too low to successfully control transmission of disease and prevent measles-related childhood illnesses and deaths,” Boulton said.

The study looked at the vaccination rate of nearly 270,000 children in the District Level Household and Facility survey data from 2008, a nationally representative sample.

Mohamed Rasheed Khan, 59, was leaving the Center for Islamic Studies on Jamaica Avenue last week when he was attacked.

The police are looking for three possible suspects and hate crime investigators have been notified.

According to the local chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Khan suffered a concussion, as well as fractures to his face and ribs and had to undergo surgery, CAIR-NY said.

BY A STAFF WRITER EWARK, NJ -- A gas station owner was shot dead in Newark and the man’s family said they thought he was targeted because he was Sikh.

Davinder Singh, 47, was shot at the Power Gas Station on West Market Street some time before 4:25 pm on June 6.

The police said Singh, of Iselin, was found unresponsive at the gas station and taken to a University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 4:45 pm.

Singh’s son, Jatinder Singh, said that he thought his father, who had moved to the United States from India 25 years ago, might have been

targeted because he was Sikh and wore a turban.

“There was no robbery, no struggle, no confrontation,” he said. “I don’t know what else it could be other than a hate crime.”

The son said the 47-year-old had been robbed before but had always fought back. But this time, he didn’t even have a chance.

“My dad came out to get some fresh air and the male came up to my dad, pointed a gun and shot him point-blank,” he said.

Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the shooting. They didn’t comment as to whether the case was being investigated as a hate crime.

Drug firm to pay $7.8m: contaminated syringes

BY A STAFF WRITER ETHLEHEM, PA -- A Pennsylvania drug and medical device manufacturer has agreed to pay up to $7.8 million Dushyant Patel for selling contaminated syringes bought from a company headed by Indian American Dushyant Patel, federal prosecutors said.

B. Braun will avoid criminal charges in exchange for implementing procedures to improve oversight of its suppliers, authorities said on May 18.

The company will pay $4.8 million in penalties and forfeited profits, plus up to $3 million in restitution.

The company, based in Melsungen, Germany, has US headquarters in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The settlement comes in response to the sale of contaminated syringes that prosecutors say led to an outbreak of bacterial infections and at least five deaths. The syringes were branded B. Braun but made by another firm.

The allegations stemmed from an investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration that started after a 2007 outbreak that sickened more than 100 people across the country.

The company started buying saline syringes from AM2PAT in North Carolina in March 2006 and announced a voluntary recall of the needles because of particles found in them that the FDA said could cause damage to the brain, heart and other organs.

B. Braun then resumed buying the syringes from AM2PAT that were found to be contaminated with bacteria that can cause blood infections.

Two of AM2PAT’s employees pleaded guilty in the federal case, and the company’s president, Dushyant Patel, was indicted in 2009 but fled the country.

They sponsored the workers’ H-1B visa with the stated purpose of working at Dibon headquarters in Carrolton, Texas but did not have an actual position at the time they were recr uited and knew the workers would ultimately provide consulting services to thirdparty companies located throughout the US.

Indian cop charged with murder attempt

BY A STAFF WRITER ALM BEACH, FL -- A former Florida police officer was arrested and charged last week in the fatal shooting of a black musician after a grand jury found that he had used unjustified force.

Nouman Raja was charged with manslaughter and attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said at a news conference. If convicted, he could be sent down for five years.

Raja, 38, was fired from the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department after the October 18 shooting of 31-year-old Corey Jones. In late April, Aronberg said he would turn evidence over to a grand jury since his

BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- New Jersey’s School Board of Education (NJSBE) has added 19 Hindu festivals to its religious holiday list, which would permit school-going students in the state to take leave on those days, without any repercussions.

‘The List of Religious Holidays Permitting Student Absence from School’ included four festivals in October itself, including Navaratri, which alone is listed for 10 days.

This “list of religious holidays on which it shall be mandatory to excuse a student” includes the Hindu festivals of Guru Purnima, Naga Panchami, Raksha Bandhan, Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesha Chaturthi, Onam, Navaratri, Duserra, Diwali, Goverdhan Puja, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Vasant Panchami, Maha Shivaratri, Holi, Chandramana Yugadi, Souramana Yugadi, Ramnavami and Hanuman Jayanti.

The Universal Society of Hinduism had urged the Board in the past to include five festivals on the list, which are now included in this list.

According to the NJSBE resolution, “Any student absent from school because of a religious holiday may not be deprived of any award or of eligibility or opportunity to compete for any award because of such absence.”

The young entrepreneur has been going to the Maker Faire since he was four years old, “I made the smart watch for kids so they can easily learn programming, design and 3-D printing,” Govil-Nair said.

He described his product’s Arduino compatibility and its programming platform, which combines C and C+.

“That’s programming language,” he explained. “I learned it when I was 6.”

BY A STAFF WRITER REENWICH, CT -- A Connecticut fund manager who fled the United States after being hit with criminal insider trading charges has been indicted for engaging in a separate scheme to embezzle $54 million from the private equity firm for which he worked.

Iftikar Ahmed, a former general partner at Oak Investment Partners, was named in a seven-count indictment filed in federal court in Boston charging him with having engaged in wire fraud and having made false statements on income tax returns.

Prosecutors said that Ahmed, 44, embezzled the more than $54 million from the firm from 2004 to 2015 by submitting false invoices, overstating prices of business deals he orchestrated on the fund’s behalf and by setting up fraudulent bank accounts.

The indictment alleged that Ahmed used the money to buy a $9.6 million residence in Greenwich, Connecticut, and a luxury New York condominium for about $8.6 million.

Ahmed, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi and Harvard Business School, previously fled to India in May 2015 after prosecutors accused him and longtime friend Amit Kanodia for having engaging in insider trading.

“We cannot always be at the top of our game in terms of wisdomrelated tendencies, and it can be dangerous to generalize based on whether people show wisdom in their personal life or when teaching

others in the classroom,” Grossmann noted.

By examining conditions and situations under which people may or may not show wisdom in their lives, researchers and practitioners may learn more about situations promoting wisdom in daily life and recreating those situations.

For the next stage of this work, Grossmann and his team are preparing a tool to assess wisdom according to the situation.

Celebrities marketing unhealthy food: Study Celebrity food endorsements promote higher product preference, and exposure to any kind of food advertising is linked to “excessive consumption, researchers warn IANS, NEW YORK

vast majority of the food and beverage products endorsed by some of the most popular celebrities in the US are unhealthy, finds a new study.

The findings showed that advertisements on fast foods, sweets as well as non-alcoholic beverages like soda and other sugary drinks, were the second-largest in the endorsement category, comprising 18 per cent of endorsements and frequently targetted children and adolescents as the audience.

Celebrity food endorsements promote higher product preference, and exposure to any kind of food advertising is linked to “excessive consumption, the researchers warned.

“Research has already shown that food advertising leads to overeating and the food industry spends $1 billion per year marketing to youth alone,” lead author Marie Bragg, assistant professor at the New York University (NYU).

Full-calorie soft drinks were the most commonly endorsed in the category. Of 69 beverages endorsed, 49 or 71 per cent were sugar-sweetened.

Twenty-one out of 26 food products — or 81 percent — were deemed as “nutrient poor”.

In contrast, water-related endorsements appeared only thrice.

Also, none of the stars were found endorsing fruits, vegetables or whole grains. Such advertisements have led to an alarming rise in childhood and teenage obesity, the researchers rued in the paper published in the journal Pediatrics.

The study used a rigorous nutritional analysis to evaluate the health quotient of food and drinks marketed by music stars, reviewing dozens of advertisements that were disseminated over a 14-year period.

“Because of our childhood and teenage obesity public health crises, it is important to raise awareness about how companies are using celebrities popular with these audiences to market their unhealthy products,” added Bragg.

esearchers have identified a promising new antibody that can help patients with aggressive and metastatic anal cancer. The findings, of the first clinical trial for metastatic patients, showed that the treatment with antibody nivolumab — one of the drugs represented among the growing arsenal of immunotherapy therapies — may help a majority of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (SCCA).

Metastatic SCCA, a cancer often associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, is normally treated with chemotherapy.

However, treatment with nivolumab freed the immune system to attack cancer by disrupting a brake that halts immune response and showed significant response in

70 per cent of patients in the study.

“Although a rare malignancy, the incidence is on the rise and has a strong association with the Human papillomavirus (HPV) virus,” said Cathy Eng, professor at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre.

Nivolumab was found to unleash an immune system attack on cancer by blocking the activation of a protein called PD-1 on T cells, white blood cells, viruses or bacteria that have specific targets.

PD-1 — turned on by a ligand called PD-L1 often found on cancer cells — acts as a brake, or checkpoint, to shut down activated T cells.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 8,000 people will be diagnosed with anal cancer in the US in 2016 and more than 1,000 people will die from the disease.
