FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2020 773.526.8353BY A STAFF WRITER FORT DODGE, IA-Dr. Megan Srinivas, an Indian American infectious disease and internal medicine physician at the Community Health Center of Fort Dodge, Iowa, is one of four finalists for the Confidence Award, awarded by the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa, as well as one of its 12 Most Inspiring Women in Iowa for 2020, according to a report on messengernews.net. According to the Inspiring Women of Iowa website, the Confidence Award is “given to someone who continues to demonstrate confidence, a positive state of mind that guides her steps and actions. Confidence comes from feelings of well-being, acceptance of her body and mind and belief in her own ability, skills and experience.” Srinivas said in the report that she feels very lucky to be considered of the same caliber as the other women who have been named “the most inspiring” in the state. The Inspiring Women of Iowa event was originally scheduled for May 7 at the Iowa Events Center Ballroom in Des Moines, but has been postponed to a later date due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

HiIndia Newsdesk An Indian-origin engineer has been charged by prosecutors with making fraudulent applications for over $10 million loans under the US COVID-19 relief programme. Shashank Rai “fraudulently pursued millions of dollars in loans intended for legitimate small businesses suffering the economic hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic”, Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski said on Wednesday announcing the filing of charges. He faces several charges including bank fraud and making false statements to a federal agency. Mr. Rai, 30, applied for a $10 million loan from a bank under PPP claiming to have 250 employees with a monthly payroll of $4 million when there were no records of paying workers, according to documents filed in the federal court in Beaumont, Texas.

Indian civil aviation minister Hardeep S Puri today said that the government is preparing to bring back 30,000 stranded Indians from across the globe amid the COVID-19 pandemic in Phase 2 of the Vande Bharat Mission. “In 1st phase of Vande Bharat we were to bring back 14,800 Indians on 64 flights. 8500 Indians have already returned till this morning. More flights are underway. In the 2nd phase the numbers are being doubled. 30,000 more Indians will return from 31 countries on 149 flights,” he tweeted. Phase 2, which will take place from May 16-22, will see flights being sent to countries such as Armenia, Australia, Belarus, Canada, France, Georgia, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal,

Shereef said that even when he’s fasting, he finds time to go out and lend a helping hand to those who need it most. “We help people affected by Covid-19 under the Kerala Samskarika Vedy Abu Dhabi community group,” he said. “We provide support to Covid patients, people under quarantine, pregnant women, workers who have lost jobs and those on visit visas and were stranded in the UAE. We give them medicines, food packages and provide them with counselling and guidance services.” They also guide workers when they need to go to covid testing centres. Shereef said that although his family is observing Ramadan well, they are missing a lot of traditions this year.
All Karnataka returnees from London Covid-19 free: Minister HiIndia Newsdesk All the returnees to Karnataka from London on an Air India flight early on Monday were free from coronavirus, a minister said. “All 326 passengers who arrived in Bengaluru from London in the morning are asymptomatic and have been shifted to 6 different quarantine facilities in 13 buses,” state Education Minister K. Sudhakar said in a tweet. Sudhakar, a doctor by profession, is also in-charge of tackling the Covid-19 crisis in the southern state. “All of them (returnees) will be tested twice during the 14-day quarantine period and swab collection will be done at their place of stay,” he said in another tweet.

hardware stores and stand-alone stores re-opened in the city amid the lockdown on Monday. According to a circular issued by the government, the stores can function between 6 am and 7 pm. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday had given nod for 34 kinds of stand-alone shops (in non-containment areas) to function from Monday, with certain restrictions. Saloon, spas, and beauty parlours are not in the list. All the stores have been instructed to ensure that social distancing is being followed, maintain hygiene and disinfect the premises thoroughly atleast five times a day.

HiIndia Newsdesk In a bid to enhance COVID-19 testing and step up health surveillance in the state, the Karnataka government has converted several buses owned by the state transport coroporation into clinics with beds and testing facilities. Flagging off the buses on Monday, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said that they would start operating from red zones identified by the state government. “Screening maximum number of residents from such zones
will enable the government to identify more people with symptoms. Those testing positive will be quarantined in designated hospitals at the earliest,” he said. Each bus is partitioned into two zones — consultation and testing. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) claimed that proper hygiene will be ensured throughout. “In Bengaluru, four teams in four mobile bus clinics have started plying across rural and urban areas of the city soon after the launch.
The Karnataka government has made it mandatory for those coming to the state from abroad to download three mobile apps – Quarantine Watch, Apthamitra, and ArogyaSetu. According to the standard operating procedure (SOP) by the department of health and family welfare in Karnataka, the foreign returnees, who will land at Bengaluru or Mangaluru airports or at the Karwar or Mangaluru seaport, will have to get a new SIM, where they will download the apps. The Karnataka government has directed telecom service providers to open help kiosks at the airports to sell new SIM cards to the foreign returnees and also help them.

Prosser said that the feature requires the calculation of blood oxygen levels to function. This means that the watches should consist of a blood oxygen sensor. completed 18 seizures that collectively included: More than 1,350 unapproved and counterfeit COVID-19 test kits, nearly 400 counterfeit N95 respirator masks, nearly 2,500 unapproved and potentially counterfeit medicines, including Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate, Chloroquine, Azithromycin, Lianhua Qingwen and Liushen Jiaonang; and more than 67,000 counterfeit ACCU-CHEK test strips. CBP is withholding specific details of individual seizures as many cases remain under investigation. These products were shipped from manufacturers and distributors in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Senegal, Germany, and the United Kingdom and were destined to addresses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, Connecticut, and Florida. CBP officers seized 354 counterfeit N95 respirator masks on April 10, 2020, at the
Area Port of Washington Dulles. These products are not on the current Emergency Use Authorization List nor are the manufacturers on the list of firms who have provided compliance notification to the FDA. As such, the products are inadmissible to the United States for violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. “Panic-stricken consumers and predatory scammers continue to purchase coronavirus protective and diagnostic equipment, and pharmaceuticals from the overseas marketplace that are either counterfeit or unapproved for use in the United States, and that pose a potentially serious health concern for American consumers,” said Ronald Stanley, CBP’s Acting Director of Field Operations in Baltimore. “Customs and Border Protection will continue to work with our partners at the Food and Drug Administration to identify and seize these potentially hazardous medical products before they could harm American consumers.”

Smugglers Subject Women and Children to Inhumane Conditions CBP NEWS RELEASE TUCSON, AZ– U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a 55-year-old Mexican national smuggling 14 men, women and children in a pickup truck near Douglas, Arizona, Monday morning. At approximately 7 a.m., a Tucson Sector agent conducted an immigration inspection on the occupants of a Ford pickup traveling west on Geronimo Trail, just east of town. During the inspection, the agent observed people concealed behind the single cab pickup seat, prompting the arrest of the vehicle’s occupants. 15 individuals, including the driver and two accompanied children, were discovered throughout the pickup. FDA Authorizes First Antigen Test to Help in the Rapid Detection of the Virus that Causes COVID-19 in Patients FDA NEWS RELEASE (Stephen M. Hahn M.D. & Dr. Jeffrey E. Shuren MD, JD) WASHINGTON, DC-The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued the first emergency use authorization (EUA) for a COVID-19 antigen test, a new category of tests for use in the ongoing pandemic. These diagnostic tests quickly detect fragments of proteins found on or within the virus by testing samples collected from the nasal cavity using swabs. The EUA was issued late Friday to Quidel Corporation for the Sofia 2 SARS Antigen FIA. This test is authorized for use in high and moderate complexity laboratories certified by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), as well as for pointof-care testing by facilities operating under a CLIA Certificate of Waiver. Diagnostic testing is one of the pillars of our nation’s response to COVID-19 and the FDA continues to take actions to help make these critical products available, including by issuing EUAs. During this pandemic, there have been two types of tests for which the FDA has issued EUAs. One type are polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, a
molecular diagnostic testing technique that detects the genetic material from the virus and can help diagnose an active COVID-19 infection. The other type are serological tests that look for antibodies to the virus, which can help identify individuals who have developed an adaptive immune response to the virus, as part of either an active infection or a prior infection (serological, or antibody, tests should not be used to diagnose active infection). This latest FDA authorization is for an antigen test, which is a new type of diagnostic test designed for rapid detection of the virus that causes COVID-19. Each category of diagnostic test has its own unique role in the fight against this virus. PCR tests can be incredibly accurate, but running the tests and analyzing the results can take time. One of the main advantages of an antigen test is the speed of the test, which can provide results in minutes. However, antigen tests may not detect all active infections, as they do not work the same way as a PCR test. Antigen tests are very specific for the virus, but are not as sensitive as molecular PCR tests. This means that positive results from

antigen tests are highly accurate, but there is a higher chance of false negatives, so negative results do not rule out infection. With this in mind, negative results from an antigen test may need to be confirmed with a PCR test prior to making treatment decisions or to prevent the possible spread of the virus due to a false negative. Antigen tests are also important in the overall response against COVID-19 as they can generally be produced at a lower cost than PCR tests and once multiple manufacturers enter the market, can potentially scale to test millions of Americans per day due to their simpler design, helping our country better identify infection rates closer to real time.

Pritkumar Tarunkumar Patel, 23, of Closter, New Jersey, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Providence on Thursday to cyberstalking and receipt of child pornography, authorities said. Patel also threatened to share the photographs on social media with the girls’ classmates and others if they didn’t continue to communicate with him, according to the office of U.S.

IAMC- NJ Organized Online Fundraiser for First Responders of the COVID-19 Pandemic BY A STAFF WRITER NEWARK, NJ- The New Jersey chapter of the Indian American Muslim Council recently organized an online fundraiser for supporting first responders of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state of New Jersey. A group of more than 100 Indian American Muslim community members in New Jersey participated in the fundraiser, raising funds for the donation of PPEs to the state’s first responders. The PPEs were distributed at the St. Michael Medical Center in Newark and the Hackensack Meridian Health, JFK Medical Center Foundation, in Edison. As a part of the drive, the funds were collected over a six-hour online fundraiser drive where IAMC executives made calls to donors and community members who, according to a press release, “showed overwhelming response to the cause as they applauded the kind work of our first responders and thanked our nurses, doctors, ambulatory staff, the police and the administrative staff working in the forefront.

Antigen tests will play a critical role in the fight against COVID-19 and we will continue to offer support and expertise to help with the development of accurate tests, and to review and monitor marketed tests to ensure accuracy, while balancing the urgent need for these critical diagnostics. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.
Indian American Psychiatrist Pays $145K Fine For Opiod Violations

BY A STAFF WRITER SAN DIEGO, CA – A local psychiatrist has paid $145,000 to resolve allegations that he overprescribed opioids to his patients over the course of several years, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Thursday. Dr. Prakash Bhatia, who previously owned and operated Progressive Health and Wellness in El Cajon, wrote prescriptions for hydromorphone, morphine, methadone, oxycodone, fentanyl and oxymorphone between March 2013 and December 2017 “without a legitimate medical purpose and/ or outside the usual course of his professional practice, in violation of the Controlled Substances Act,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors say Bhatia also prescribed those medications in combination with depressants, “which are known to increase the risk of abuse, addiction and overdose.” U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said, “Overprescribing opioids to patients who need treatment for their pain has contributed to the opioid epidemic in this country.” An investigation into Bhatia was initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administration. DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. Callery said, “By holding the medical community accountable for improperly writing opioid prescriptions, the DEA is ensuring that San Diegans are safe from illicit prescribers who enable the abuse of prescription drugs for financial benefit.
