‘Immigration reform to reduce deficit’ The new bill aims at streamlining the immigration policy; to reduce budget deficit by $900 billion over next 20 years IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported on March 25 that the immigration form plan presented by Democrats in the House of Representatives would reduce the United States budget deficit by $900 billion over the next 20 years. The CBO estimates that approving the bill — virtually identical to the bipartisan measure passed by the Senate last June — would save the country about $200 billion in the first decade and some $700 billion in the second. That forecast assumes that the legislation would increase the population by some 10 million people in more than a decade, adding another 8 million undocumented immigrants whose status would be legalized. The CBO report “proves that now is truly the time to pass comprehensive immigration reform,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

The bill would save the country about $200 billion in the first decade and some $700 billion in the second, the forecast said.

“With this sensible, bipartisan legislation, we can raise wages, empower our small businesses, spur innovation and create jobs. We can bring our broken immigration system into line with our history and our values — securing

US court reserves ruling in 1984 riots case IANS, NEW YORK

A

United States court has reserved its ruling on the Congress party’s plea for dismissal of a human rights violation case relating to the 1984 antiSikh violence filed by a U.S.-based Sikh rights group. Manhattan’s U.S. Federal Judge Robert W. Sweet reserved his ruling after the Congress party, chal-

lenging the “extraterritorial jurisdiction” of U.S. courts, asked it to respect India’s sovereignty. The Congress party argued that the U.S. court should decline to hear the case as the party could not be held liable in a U.S. court for “acts occurring in India nearly three decades ago, involving only

residents of India, with no plausible nexus to the United States”. If this case is allowed to continue it will be a frontal attack on India’s sovereignty, it said. Urging Sweet to continue with the 1984 case, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) attorney Michael Fitzgerald said the 1984 violence was not an accident or coincidence but a plan to eliminate the Sikhs. The death of 3,000 Sikhs in the 1984 violence cannot be characterised as “elimination”, countered the Congress party pointing out that millions of Sikhs live in India and a Sikh is the Prime Minister of India since 2004. Challenging the Congress party’s contention that the 1984 case is “time barred” under U.S. laws, Fitzgerald argued that Sikh rights’ violation is a “continuing offence” because Congress party still provides impunity to perpetrators of the 1984 violence. In March 2011, a U.S. court had issued summons against the Congress party in the class action lawsuit filed by SFJ under the Alien Tort Statute and Torture Victim Protection Act.

our borders, protecting our workers, uniting our families, and creating an earned pathway to citizenship,” the California Democrat also said. Pelosi lamented the fact that “despite the enormous (economic)

benefits” and the “overwhelming support” of the US population for the reform, Republicans continue to block a vote on comprehensive immigration reform. “Enough is enough — and Democrats are demanding a vote,” Pelosi said.

30 injured as train derails at Chicago WASHINGTON: More than 30 people were injured when a commuter train derailed on March 24 at the underground station of an airport in the United States city of Chicago. The accident happened around 2:50 a.m. when the CTA train jumped the platform and scaled an escalator at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Xinhua reported. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening. The eight-car CTA train remains wedged near the top of an escalator used by commuters at the airport’s Blue Line terminal. Workers may have to cut up the car and remove it piece by piece, which could take 12-24 hours, according to CTA spokesperson Brian Steele. All of the 32 injured were aboard the train and were taken to four hospitals, officials were quoted by Chicago Tribune as saying. Six people were listed in fair-to-serious condition and 26 in good-to-fair condition. Blue Line Service to the O’Hare International Airport will be disrupted for most of the day. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. —IANS

Indian political parties woo NRIs in US IANS, WASHINGTON

O

verseas wings of the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are all passionately wooing Indians abroad ahead of India's Parliamentary elections in April-May. The AAP is particularly active in using social media and online campaigns to win the Indian diaspora's support for what AAPUSA leader Pran Kurup calls a "BIG election" where "India's future is at stake." "Pervasive corruption is the greatest impediment to the growth of the country," Kurup told IANS in an email interview. "Indians living in America understand India's true potential at a very fundamental level, and it makes them sad to see India not living up to its full potential," he said. The Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP) is also reaching out to non-resident Indians (NRIs) through social media and phone calls for what its US unit president Chandrakant Patel considers "a historic election". Hundreds of BJP supporters are also travelling to India for the campaign as "the voice of NRIs has a greater impact on the people". Like its parent party's Chai pe Charcha (Discussion on Election 2014 over tea) programs with BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the OFBJP recently organised a ‘Chai Party’

in Washington DC. The Indian National Overseas Congress, USA, too is using social media, articles, media advertisements, email and telephone calls to spread the party's message. But party president George Abraham acknowledges "there is a lot of apathy" among the people there. Due to "anti-incumbency sentiment", the "Congress hasn't been very successful in communicating the accomplishments to the people", Abraham told IANS. The Congress is not having any fundraisers as "they are illegal". In Abraham's view, the key issues at stake for Indians abroad are "survival of secularism, potential polarisation of the communities and the handling of global issues like trade, war and peace with maturity". "FDI, U.S.-India relationship,

NRI issues as regards to investment, consular services and bilateral agreements as regards H-1 visas," are also important in his view. Improvising on President Barack Obama's campaign slogan of "Yes, We Can!", the AAP is rallying supporters with the catchphrase "Together, We Can!". It is calling on supporters to "use your social media, status messages and mail signatures to create awareness about the party's ideologies". Kurup describes "the emergence of the AAP as a credible alternative (that) offers us hope and an opportunity to move in the right direction". Its volunteer teams across the world, he said, meet and discuss various issues, and attend local events to spread the party's message and sign up new volunteers.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on March 26 asked Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy to deposit `100 billion with the market regulator SEBI for his release on interim bail from judicial custody. The apex court bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice J.S. Khehar said that of the `100 billion `50 billion would be deposited in cash, and the balance `50 billion will be furnished through a bank guarantee. The court declined to water down its orders as the Sahara Group counsel expressed inability to raise such a huge amount while Roy is in jail. The counsel urged that he may be released on depositing `25 billion with SEBI and sought one month’s time for the rest of the amount. The court adjourned the hearing for March 27 for Roy to respond to its order.

Mahapanchayat held in a Uttar Pradesh town has ruled that girls should refrain from wearing jeans. The order was issued in a meeting recently that was attended by thousands of people from 52 villages. Most of them belonged to the Yadav clan from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan. Barsana priest Ram Prasad said the order was made public on March 26. A few residents were unhappy over the order. “It’s plain illogical and makes little sense why the village heads should issue this kind of order,” said Anuj Prasad, a teacher. He argued that it was for the girls to decide what they wanted to wear. A few others too debated whether such impositions should be made, while BJP candidate and cine star Hema Malini engaged in a road show and sought blessings at various temples in the district. A few other decisions made by the Mahapanchayat were, however, welcomed. Ramesh Baba, famous for his save Yamuna movement, guided the Mahapanchayat which ruled

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on•March 26 rejected the plea for CBI/SIT probe into the Muzaffarnagar communal riots that took place in September 2013. The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam said that if the centre and the state intelligence agencies had smelled of what was happening at the ground level, then the riots could have been prevented. Declining the prayer for CBI/SIT probe, the court referred to a number of steps that the state police has taken to deal with the situation and the subsequent actions. In a reference to a state government circular saying that the relief would be available to Muslim victims only, the court in one of its several directions said that the availability of relief should not be on the basis of victim’s religious denomination and it should be provided to the genuine victims.

C

ongress vice president Rahul Gandhi on March 25 attacked the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal for failing to ensure development and jobs and not being different from the Left regime it ousted. Returning the fire, Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress chief, called Gandhi a “fair weather friend” who makes an appearance only during the poll season and said leaders who never knew what poverty was should not talk big. Addressing an election rally at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district, Gandhi also alleged that central government funds sent to the state

never reached the beneficiaries. “Bengal has contributed largely for the country but unfortunately it has not progressed as desired,” he said in his first visit to the state after the announcement of Lok Sabha elections. “Earlier there was a Communist government here... Communism failed in Russia, (it) changed in China and fortunately also in Bengal... “People had hoped the new government (in the state) will work for development, for education, for creating jobs and employment. Unfortunately the Trinamool government has done the same things for which it fought against the Communists,” Gandhi added.

hat has been feared about Narendra Modi is proving to be true. The rough-and-ready manner in which he has been imposing his writ on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may refurbish his image of being a “strong” leader, but it also highlights his Gujarat “model” of authoritarian governance, which may be a cause of concern both inside and outside the BJP.

days,” the party chief said. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the manifesto attempts to cover the needs of all sections of society, from farmers, the Scheduled Caste, women and children. “It is a forward looking document... it is in response to the needs of the people of the country,” he said. Congress president Sonia Gandhi said the Congress-led UPA will win the Lok Sabha election despite adverse opinion polls. Gandhi told the media that election-eve opinion polls had been proved repeatedly wrong. “In 2004 it was said that the Congress story is finished,” she said. “But the story of the Congress continued.

Not surprisingly, the “strong” leader of today faced a challenge, albeit a brief one, from the ‘lauh purush’ or iron man of yesterday, L.K. Advani, although the latter’s armour has become somewhat rusty over the years. It will be a mistake, however, to see the Modi-Advani confrontation as an isolated instance of personal rivalry. Even if there is an overdose of ambition in the two, both of whom think that he is ready for the top job, Modi’s tendency to ride

Congress sources said that Rawat was a lightweight compared to Modi and the party wanted to give a tough fight to the Gujarat chief minister. leaders — Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Lalji Tandon — were pushed around. Before Advani was virtually compelled to accept the Gandhinagar seat by the combined might of the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Joshi was dragged kicking and screaming from Varanasi to accommodate Modi, and Lalji Tandon was similarly evicted from Lucknow so that BJP president Rajnath Singh could contest from there. These two displacements showed that there was no one in the party to stand up to Modi except Advani and that, too, for only a few hours.

Nitish Kumar may campaign in Gujarat CHENNAI: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may campaign in Gujarat for the Lok Sabha elections, a JD-U leader said, in what may increase the possibility of a face-off with his bete noire Narendra Modi. Janata Dal-United spokesperson K.C. Tyagi told IANS that the possibility of Nitish Kumar campaigning in Gujarat was being discussed within the party. “The plan will be finalized in a day or two. At the moment, I can neither confirm nor deny whether it will work out,” he said. Tyagi said the JD-U was likely to contest 10 of the 26 Lok Sabha seats in the state. JD-U sources said Nitish Kumar had planned to campaign in Gujarat during the 2012 assembly elections but pulled out at the last minute. With JD-U having severed ties with BJP over Modi's elevation, Nitish Kumar does not have any constraint of coalition niceties, the sources said.

nly a fraction of some three million Indian Americans have a vote back home. But everyone seems excited about the Lok Sabha elections that many hope will usher in a “clean government” and help put India on the world stage. “Overseas Indians want a clean government in India” as “India has been missing out in the world stage,” says Thomas Abraham, founder president of many major community organizations including the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO). “We need a government which will keep ears open and seek out new ideas,” Abraham told IANS, as he called for the involvement of NRIs and PIOs in areas of development in technology and business, education, healthcare as well as village development. Noting that Indian Americans have played a major role in the last three decades to develop closer ties between India and the U.S., Abraham said the new Indian government must bring the two countries further closer. Sanjay Puri, chairman of the U.S. India Political Action Committee, which calls itself the political voice of Indian Americans, agrees. “This election and a resultant government either incumbent or new can do a lot of good for India and Indian Americans in addressing” some perception and

Noting that Indian Americans have played a major role in the last three decades to develop closer ties between India and the U.S., Abraham said the new Indian government must bring the two countries further closer geopolitical issues”, Puri told IANS. “Indian Americans take pride in their origins and being from India,” Puri said. “However a regular drum beat of news about scandals relating to corruption and then the issue of women’s safety impact the perception of India in the minds of Americans and especially Indian Americans,” he added. Similarly, Indian Americans care about the role India plays in the region and globally. “This election will have an impact on key aspects of India’s foreign policy given that the existing coalition government has been hamstrung due to coalition politics on several issues,” Puri said. Both Puri and Abraham look at the arrival of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on the political scene in a positive light. “AAP’s role is a welcome addition”, Abraham said. “Before the Delhi (assembly) election, there was substantial contribution from American NRIs in terms of volunteers and financial contribution (to AAP). But “as a party with a platform of anti-corruption, it must

also become a responsible party to govern.” “Overall I think the rise of the AAP party has been received very positively given that governance or corruption has been one of the biggest concerns of the Indian American community,” Puri said. Also what has resonated with the Indian Americans, he said, was that AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal was an IIT- educated professional. Many Indian-Americans believe that more educated professionals need to participate in the political process in India. Puri noted that some of the leading parties in India have an overseas presence and have very active members and supporters. Some of whom will be going to India to actively campaign. Abraham calls the requirement of voting in person for NRIs “an injustice done to 10 million Indians who hold Indian passports who cannot exercise their right to vote”. He also suggested introduction of “electronic voting using a password” or alternatively allotment of two Lok Sabha seats for Overseas Indians.

Russia ousted from G-8 over Crimea International law prohibits any kind of land annexation, say Western countries IANS, WASHINGTON

E

scalating tension over Russia’s annexation of Crimea, seven Western powers ousted Moscow from the G-8 and moved to shift the group’s planned June summit in Sochi to a G7 meeting in Brussels. The move to suspend Russia’s membership in the G8 came at a meeting of the seven other leading industrialized nations on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit at The Hague, according to a White House announcement. “International law prohibits the acquisition of part or all of another state’s territory through coercion or force,” said a joint statement by U.S. President Barack Obama and leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Britain. “To do so violates the principles upon which the international system is built. We condemn the illegal referendum held in Crimea in violation of Ukraine’s constitution. “We also strongly condemn Rus-

Russia calls US, EU short-sighted GENEVA: Russian foreign ministry’s representative at the 25th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council criticized the European Union and the U.S. for being shortsighted in their approach to the presence of ultra-nationalists in Ukraine’s executive power bodies. “This approach is hard to explain,” said Roman Kashayev, who is leading the Russian delegation at the session. “We are concerned with the deficit of attention shown by the US and EU”.

sia’s illegal attempt to annex Crimea in contravention of international law and specific international obligations,” it said. Reporting from The Hague, CNN cited Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying earlier in the day that being kicked out of G8 would be no big deal. “G8 is an informal organization that does not give out any membership cards and, by its definition, cannot remove anyone,” he was quoted as saying at a news conference. “All the economic and financial questions are decided in G20, and G8 has the purpose of existence as the forum of dialogue between the leading Western countries and Russia.”

Search for lost Malaysian jet on CANBERRA: The search for the Malaysian airliner that went missing on March 8 and was declared lost continued on March 26 in the southern Indian Ocean, the Australian authorities said. Six countries — Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., Japan, China and South Korea — are participating in the search operation in the area 2,500 km southwest of Perth, the capital of Western Australia state. “A total of seven military and five civil aircraft will be involved in search activities,” the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said in a statement. The search was suspended on March 25 due to adverse weather conditions. While one Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft from China departed Perth around 8 am for the search area, a Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) P3 Orion aircraft departed for at around 9 to 10 am. A Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P3 Orion was scheduled to depart Perth around 11 am, a US Navy P8 Poseidon around 2 pm, a Japanese P3 Orion around 3 pm, a second RAAF P3 Orion around 4 pm, and South Korean P3 Orion around 5 pm. “Two civil aircraft have now departed Perth for the search area. The remaining three civil aircraft will depart for the search area between 10 am and midday,” the AMSA statement said.

Malaysian PM Najib Razak speaks at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 34 State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers from Western Australia will be air observers on board the five civil aircraft. The Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Success and China’s polar supply ship Xue Long are also in the search area. Malaysia Airline flight MH370 vanished mysteriously about an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur shortly after midnight on March 8. The plane was scheduled to land in Beijing the same day. The 226 passengers on board included five Indians, 154 Chinese and 38 Malaysians. The plane lost contact along with its radar signal when it was flying over the air traffic control area of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

N-terrorism serious threat to global security: Khurshid NEW DELHI: Nuclear terrorism and clandestine proliferation continue to pose a serious threat to international security and there is a need to strengthen international nuclear security architecture, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has said. In his plenary statement at the Nuclear Security Summit at The Hague, Khurshid said India fully shares the continuing global concern on possible breaches of nuclear security. “Nuclear terrorism and clandestine proliferation continue to pose a serious threat to international security,” Khurshid said, according to a statement made available on Tuesday. He said that despite the progress made since U.S. President Barack Obama convened the first nuclear security summit, terrorism and other malicious acts involving nuclear material and facilities remain a clear danger. “Any breach in nuclear security could undermine public confidence. We should together deny terrorists what they seek

and eliminate the risks of sensitive materials and technologies falling into their hands. “The focus on non-state actors should in no way diminish state accountability in combating terrorism, dismantling its support structures or its linkages with weapons of mass destruction,” Khurshid said. The minister, who led the Indian delegation, said there was a need to strengthen the international nuclear security architecture by ratifying and implementing the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and its 2005 amendment and the International Convention on the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism. “Our common message as governments, industry and academia must be that nuclear energy can and must be harnessed while maintaining the highest levels of nuclear safety and security,” he said. He said India considers the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as key in international cooperative efforts to promote nuclear security.

Nepal, India to beef up security

KATHMANDU: Officials from Nepal and India have agreed to intensify vigilance along the 1,850-km porous border between the two countries to keep criminal elements at bay in view of the parliamentary elections to be held in India April-May. At a meeting organized on March 24 by the district magistrate of Siddarthanagar in Uttar Pradesh state of India, the two sides also signed an eight-point agreement to enhance security along the border to ensure it was peaceful during the upcoming Parliamentary elections. “We have agreed to curb human trafficking, and activities of armed outfits active in bordering areas, among others. And we have also decided to share real-time information in this respect to enable immediate action,” said Rabindra Sharma, senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Nepal Police in Kapilvastu district.

Sri Lanka Army to act on leaked video COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka Army on March 22 ordered strict action against soldiers found harassing female recruits in a video circulating on the Internet. The video shows soldiers harassing and assaulting the recruits with sticks during a training session. The YouTube video was found to be authentic and the army is taking action against those guilty, Xinhua quoted Army spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya as saying. Army Commander Daya Ratnayake had ordered an investigation into the video after it first surfaced earlier this month, he added. The investigation carried out by the Sri Lanka Army Corps of Military Police had revealed that the video in question is an authentic one, the army spokesperson said, adding that the incident depicted in the video had taken place in Octo-

ber 2012 at a camp in the north central Anuradhapura town where some female recruits were being trained. According to a preliminary report the instructors have punished the recruits for an act in violation of military discipline. However, the method adopted is not in accordance with standard procedures prescribed for such corrective punitive actions. “It has been found that the individuals who carried out this excessive action had over stepped their mandate and acted in their own volition. Further, the punitive methods employed by the instructors were not in line with prescribed procedures,” the official said. He said considering these observations the commander of the army has ordered the authorities to follow up on this case and take strict action against all those who had violated the military code of conduct.

Maldives ruling coalition wins election MALE: Maldives President Abdulla Yameen’s party and its coalition partners have won parliamentary elections, officials said on March 23. The Maldivian parliamentary elections which were held amid controversial removal of the head and deputy of the elections commission, concluded peacefully on

March 22, reported Xinhua. Vote counting gave the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party led by former president Mohammad Nasheed who was ousted from power in 2012 a slim lead initially but was soon overtaken by Yameen’s Progressive Party of Maldives.

There was “ample evidence” that Gupta was involved in a criminal conspiracy to share confidential information related to Goldman with Rajaratnam, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said in a 3-0 decision. Gupta had asked the appeals court to set aside his conviction or at least grant him a new trial. His lawyers said the trial judge was wrong to allow wiretaps of Rajaratnam’s cellular telephone into the case, including two phone calls in which Gupta didn’t participate. “We’re very disappointed in today’s decision... believe

Srinivasan must step down: SC Fair probe impossible in IPL betting charges if N Srinivasan continues as BCCI chief, observes apex court IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Supreme Court on March 25 came down heavily on N. Srinivasan, saying that the BCCI chief must step down to enable a fair investigation into the allegations of betting in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Making it clear that no fair investigation will be possible unless he quit, the court said if Srinivasan did not step down on his own, it would pass an order. “In our opinion, Srinivasan has

to step down for a fair investigation into the allegation of betting,” said Justice A.K. Patnaik during the hearing on the report of Justice (retd) Mukul Mudgal, who was asked by the apex court to probe allegations of betting and spot fixing in the IPL. As senior counsel C.A. Sundaram sought to defend the BCCI, Justice Patnaik said: “We will show the papers. You see them and tell us as a counsel about your opinion and not as a paid counsel for Srinivasan.”

In his report to Supreme Court, Justice Mudgal has indicted Srinivasan’s (above) son-in-law G Meiyappan in the IPL betting.

At one stage, comparing the two reports - one by an earlier committee comprising two retired judges of the Madras High Court and the other by Justice Mudgal, Justice Patnaik asked: “Can we say that the probe report was managed and if we say so, then what will be the consequences?” Justice Mudgal in his report to the Supreme Court in February indicted Srinivasan’s son-

in-law Gurunath Meiyappan in the IPL betting scandal. He also blamed India Cements, owner of Chennai Super Kings, for failing to comply with the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Anti-Corruption Code for Participants. Jaypee pins Indian GP hopes on next govt GREATER NOIDA: Sameer Gaur, CEO of Indian Grand Prix promoters Jaypee Sports International, has said the Formula 1’s return to the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in 2015 will depend on how the next central government treats the sport. Gaur told IANS at the BIC that he would meet F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone next month in his bid to get the race back next year after it was dropped from the 2014 calendar owing to bureaucratic and tax issues faced by the stakeholders (Jaypee, F1 group and teams). Ecclestone told IANS earlier in the month that he wanted financial guarantees from Jaypee Group for the race to see out its five-year contract. The first three editions

took place 2011-2013. Gaur said that a lot of Eccelestone’s demands depend on the next union government that is likely to take office by end of May. “I will be meeting with Mr. Ecclestone in April and we will talk about all the issues which ensure F1 comes back to India. Having said that, a lot will also depend on the support of the next government at the centre. Hopefully, the government will make things easier for us,” said Gaur ahead of the April-May general elections. Gaur was confident that he would convince Ecclestone for a round next year, but in the long run the government support to the event was a must. — IANS

When the betting scandal came to light Srinivasan, who also owns India Cements, had distanced himself from Meiyappan, saying he was just a mere cricket enthusiast. India lost opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan early to leggie Samuel Badree in the very first over but Rohit and Kohli took away the match from the West Indies with their 106-run stand for the second wicket. While Rohit held up one end, Kohli went after the West Indies bowling spanking the bowlers to all parts of the ground. His 41-ball knock was studded with four fours and a six. With a victory in sight, Kohli was played down by a delivery from Andre Russell. Earlier, the trio of Ravindra Jadeja (3/48), Amit Mishra (2/18) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1/24) did well to tie down the West Indies big hitters.

We are still working on the script and it will go on floors by the end of this year,” Singh of Lahore fame, told IANS. “The two prominent faces in this film will be inspired by Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar. HOLI FESTIVAL AT THE LEMONT TEMPLE

L

BY A STAFF WRITER

EMONT, IL The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago in Lemont, Illinois celebrated one of the most lively festivals of the year, the Holi, on March 15,. Holi marks the beginning of spring in India and unlike other religious Hindu festivals there is something here for everyone - food, fun, colors, singing and dancing. The celebrations at the Hindu Temple were no exception to this. People had a choice to participate in the religious events or the cultural events that were going on at the same time. The cultural program got to a good start at 2 pm in the Rathi auditorium of the temple conducted by the cultural committee of the temple. The auditorium was filled to capacity with over 600 people that included the participants and others who came to enjoy the program. Tilak Marwaha, vice-president of the temple, addressed the gathering and encouraged the audiences to take active part in all the events of that afternoon. After the cultural program ended, things got shifted from the Rathi Auditorium to the spacious dining hall where Dandiya Raas was held with more than 100 people participating.

Colours and camaraderie at Hindu Temple

Men and women, young and old danced with sticks in a circular fashion to the rhythmic beat of the Dhol. As this was going on inside, people who were outside started the most awaited event of the evening - Dhuleti - spraying colors at each other. The Temple had brought over 2,000 pounds of colors from India for this event and most of this was sold out in brisk

sales within a couple of hours. There were colors everywhere and the celebrations reached a peak with everyone dancing to the beat of Holi songs. Everyone enjoyed the delicious snacks that included soft idlis, piping hot samosas, spicy bhelpuri and chai garam prepared fresh by the temple kitchen. Food stall was so busy that Prasanna Reddy and Jayanthi Mittur who

Colorectal cancer findings in Asian communities

BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO (IL) - Despite research that shows colorectal cancer screening tests saves lives, screening rates in the United States remain low, and one in three adults aged 50 to 75 years have not been tested for colorectal cancer as recommended by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Colorectal cancer screening for individuals aged 50 and over is only 56% and for Asian Americans, the overall screening rate is far lower at 48%, and varies significantly across different subgroups. In observance of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the Partnership for Healthier Asians project recently released a community report to share key activities and findings to improve wider adoption of evidence-based, colorectal cancer screening practices in underserved Asian communities. Partnership for Healthier Asians (or PHA) is a community-academic research project led by the University of Chicago’s Office

of Community Engagement and Cancer Disparities (OCECD) and Asian Health Coalition (AHC), in collaboration with a multi-ethnic cohort of organizations including the Cambodian Association of Illinois, Chinese American Service League, Chinese Mutual Aid Association, Hanul Family Alliance, Korean American Community Services and Lao American Organization of Elgin, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, and Mercy Family Health Center. “Having developed an evidence-based colorectal health education and screening program back in 2012 for Chicago’s Asian community, this project explores effective ways to disseminate colorectal cancer health information and increase screening participation rates for the target groups who have a majority of foreign-born and limited English-speaking older Asian Americans,” said Edwin Chandrasekar, AHC Executive Director. “Our collaboration utilizes communitybased participatory research approaches to engage both community members and

physician researchers to actively participate in the full spectrum of this project from designing the scope of work up to analyzing, interpreting, and communicating our findings,” he said. “Engaging communities is not a new concept to practitioners in the scientific arena, yet it has not been fully embraced by traditional clinical researchers and as a result, has not provided solid answers to research questions that may explain the cancer -related disparities Asian communities of color face on a daily basis,” stated Dr Karen Kim, MD, principal investigator for the project and Director at the OCECD. “Our approach to working in community settings will allow us to examine whether settings are representative, including examining reach and adoption,” said Dr Kim. Support for continuing work on this project has been made possible through an R24 award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and generosity of private funding support from the Research Retirement Foundation and Chicago Community Trust.

were serving the items had hardly any time to step outside and participate in Dhuleti. Satya Srinivasan who chairs the food committee, cooks Sooryanarayana Hebbar and Senthil Kumar with the help of a team of volunteers did a superb job in preparing hot food and supplying it to the outside food tent and kept up with the increasing demands that afternoon. Later in the evening, before the start of bonfire, Padmini Rao sang a couple of bhajans and priest Shri Ram Parsad of the temple explained the religious significance of Holi to the gathered crowds. Bonfire, called the Holi Dahan, was held to close off the celebrations. At times, during the outside festivities, the number of people who attended had swollen to 4,000 plus, according to some estimates. This is not an easy festival to conduct by any stretch of imagination and the temple management has to be congratulated for making this event such a huge success. Traffic coordination by Bhima Rao and Satish Amruthur, color set up and sales by Renuka Reddy and Sridhara Tambarahalli, snack sale help to the outside tents coordinated by Lakshmana Mittur, pooja setup by Shashi Kaveti and audio and DJ setup by Vanamurthy Achari contributed in a big way in making this daylong event run so smoothly.

AST MOLINE (IL) -- A two-year-old in East Moline, Illinois was injured on March 24 by razor blades glued to playground equipment. The police rushed to Millennium Park at 12.45 pm and found the boy with cuts to his hand. “East Moline parks are safe, but it’s just a bad situation, bad instance where somebody or maybe a group of kids, I don’t know who did this, but figured this would be a fun prank to do,” a police officer said. The police found and removed about a dozen razors glued onto the equipment with a white, putty-like substance. The police said they were investigating the incident and also looked at the rest of the city’s parks. There have been other vandalism-type incidents recently, and are asking neighbors to keep an eye out for anything unusual at area parks. or actor Kajol, who is set to feature in her husband and filmmaker-actor Ajay Devgn’s home production, her priority is her children and she can’t “dump them and go off to work”. Kajol and Ajay, who got married in 1999, are the parents of two children — daughter Nysa and son Yug. After the birth of her daughter in 2003, she has done very few films such as Fanaa, U Me Aur Hum, My Name Is Khan, We Are Family and Toonpur Ka Superrhero. In an exclusive interview, Kajol told IANS: “My only reason why I am not doing films is my children. My children need my attention and it’s my duty to give ‘My only reason them my time. Even kids expect that kind of time from you, and my husband is always working. He does four films in a year, so at least I have to be with them.” Aware of the fact that she has a fan following that wants to see her on the screen, the actress said she likes to have her space.

G Parole over, Sanjay Dutt back to jail PUNE: Actor Sanjay Dutt, convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, on March 22 returned to the Yerawada Central Jail here after his parole ended after 90 days. The actor was released on a month-long parole on Decemeber 21 last year on the grounds of his wife Maanyata’s illness. Later, the parole was extended till February 21 and then again till March 21, inviting a barrage of criticism from various quarters over the repeated parole granted to him. Prior to the three paroles, Dutt was granted a fortnight’s furlough, which was extended by another fortnight in October on grounds of his own illness.

Rajesh Khattar as the avaricious builder with his thick Gujarati accent that cuts through the saturated soundtrack reminds us of the really comic films about land usurpation like Dibakar Bannerjee’s Khosla Ka Ghosla. Gang Of Ghosts goes into convulsions of periodicity induced though some badly-written songs recreating a nasal nostalgia and through different shades of offcolor photography where the cinematographer (Johnny Lal) seems to quickly lose interest in the aura of the era. The shades of grey conveying an era gone-by begin to pale and fall apart soon enough. That’s the trouble with this comedy. Everything is half-hearted. The premise pulsates with par-

There is much to be done and there are time constraints. Radio, television, print, channel shows, visits to cities, premieres,” the 71-year-old, who will make appearance on shows like Boogie Woogie and Comedy Nights with Kapil, posted on his official blog srbachchan.tumblr.com. Directed by Bhushan Patel, Ragini MMS 2 has collected about Rs.16 crore in two days. The movie hit the screens March 21, a day when most of the people were glued to their television sets to watch the India-Pakistan match in Bangladesh as part of ICC World Twenty20 tournament. B’wood considered cool in the West: Pallavi Sharda MUMBAI: Indian-Australian actor Pallavi Sharda, who made her Bollywood debut with Besharam, is happy being part of the Hindi filmdom and says the West doesn’t look down upon the industry. “I am extremely happy being part of Bollywood or being called a Hindi film actress. As far as West is concerned, they enjoy Bollywood and they don’t look down upon Bollywood,” Pallavi told IANS. “Bollywood is cool in the West, especially the song and dance. But yes, sometimeswestern filmmakers find it cliched and less crafted. I come from western school and I have been raised in the west, so I think every cinema has their own space.” In Besharam, Pallavi had teamed up with Ranbir Kapoor and her next Bombay Fairytale, a biopic, will see her with Ayushmann Khurrana. “Ayushman is very mature and I enjoyed shooting with him. If you have an understanding co-star, half of your work gets sorted.” Vibhu Puri has directed Bombay Fairytale. She is also eager to shake a leg in a dance number. "There are so many actresses who are doing some beautiful songs as guest dancers. I would love to do an interesting dance number. In fact, it's the one thing that I am craving for," she added.

In an ensemble cast, loss is borne by all: Meera Chopra MUMBAI: Southern actress Meera Chopra, who teamed up with a host of actors in her Bollywood debut Gang Of Ghosts, says there is an advantage of working in a multi-starrer — the onus is on everyone if the movie doesn’t work. Meera said: “Before this film (Gang of Ghosts), I had signed Vikram Bhatt’s film, which is a supernatural love story. So first, I signed that, but first this film released. So I feel it’s an advantage for me...even if it’s a flop, the entire burden will not be on me as the film has an ensemble cast.” “If a film has an ensemble cast, the loss is borne by all the actors and I am glad I am debuting with the film. My next film is a solo project,” she added. Meera started her acting career in southern film industry.

Nargis’ Hindi is improving MUMBAI: Actress Nargis Fakhiri, who is still struggling to speak Hindi fluently, has dubbed in her own voice in her forthcoming film Main Tera Hero and says the language is not blocking offers. “There is no less offers because of my language problem. If I get a script, I understand it when I read it,” said the actress and added that script reading sessions with co-stars help too. “You get time to sit with your co-actors and prepare, but to improvise in Hindi is tough. (Initially) I had to stick to my lines, but now I can understand and that’s a great progress,” said the actress who entered the Hindi film industry with Rockstar, a musical hit.

Ride a bike in a jiffy, Piaa style! CHENNAI: Southern actress Piaa Bajpai, currently shooting for Malayalam film Kelvi, learnt how to ride a motor bike in just a few minutes for a crucial sequence in the film. Impressed with her riding skills, the makers are planning to extend scenes featuring her with the bike. “I used to drive my father’ scooter when I was in class eighth or ninth. So I had the experience of riding a two-wheeler, but I never rode one with gears. I learnt to ride a Pulsar NS 200 bike for the film. It just took me few minutes to ride on my own without anybody running behind me,” Piaa told IANS.

I don’t have a Facebook page: Alia Bhatt MUMBAI: Highway actress Alia Bhatt turned to her Twitter page on March 22 to set the record straight that all Facebook pages in her name are “fake”. “I do not have a Facebook page! All pages being handled are fake. Please do not follow,” Alia posted . Her elder step sister Pooja also made the message about Alia’s fake accounts clear to her ‘followers’ on Twitter. “Someone running Alia’s FAKE ‘verified page’ quotes her as thanking a N.K. Productions Ltd for managing her account. Do the math folks! “Oh and all those subscribing to http://www.facebook.com/AliaBhatt, prepare to be shattered. It’s FAKE! All these cons on Facebook should be dealt with,” added Pooja.

Salman plans expansion for ‘Being Human’ MUMBAI: Superstar Salman Khan is set to expand his charitable organisation “Being Human” by opening up more stores in the country as well as go international with stores in Sri Lanka. “A lot of people are buying ‘Being Human’ clothing and we are doing pretty well. This year we plan to open about 40 more stores and we would be in about 1,850 selling points. Plus we have tied up with Sri Lanka,” the 48-year-old said hereon on March 23 at a VEER campaign by Thums Up. “We are doing pretty okay and now we want to start cafes, gymnastics and all that kind of stuff. All the money we make will go straight back into the charitable trust after paying taxes,” Salman added. The actor said that they are taking things slow as they want new ventures to be permanent.

couture Sindoori, magenta, purple and white... New-age Indian brides are opting for unconventional colors for their bridal attire to look ‘zara hat ke’ on their wedding day...

F

or decades, red has been the color of the Indian bride. But young women today are experimenting with a variety of hues like purple, pink, copper and even white, to make a style statement on the special day of their life. “Women have got bored of wearing the same color and are looking for something different. They want to make their D-Day special. So they are looking for lehengas that help them stand out,” Nupur, a representative of designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula, said. Designer Pam Mehta said: “Women are moving away from the traditional red to opt for colors like hot pink, blue, green — in heavily embroidered as well as simple lehengas.” On their wedding day, a bride wants to look her best; so

a lot of emphasis is given to her outfit. A bridal lehenga is embellished to give it a rich, layered and textured look. In most cases, heavy embroidery with silver or golden thread, stones, crystals and sequins are used to bedeck the bridal outfit. With changing lifestyles and tastes, brides now don’t mind experimenting. From subtle or natural colors to dull silver and metallic ones, they are opting for everything that is non-traditional but at the same time stylish and sophisticated. Also, many women look up to Bollywood for inspiration, and some actresses have indeed broken the monotony of red at their own weddings. While Kajol draped a green sari for her wedding with Ajay Devgn, Bollywood diva Aishwarya Rai wore a golden sari when she married Abhishek Bachchan. Many brides are also opting for white. The trend was noticed in the recently released Aisha where in wedding celebration scenes the cast, including Sonam Kapoor, Ira Dubey, Amrita Puri and Anuradha Patel, were seen emblazoning the screen in white-red and white-gold saris.

BLOOMS FOR BRIDES F

lowers are of the essence. Today an Indian wedding presents a fusion of floral traditions — both eastern and western. All floral arrangements and their colour, especially at weddings, are replete with symbolism. Whites, for instance, speak of purity and innocence. Reds, yellows and oranges all speak of passion, romance, friendship in varying degrees corresponding to their shades. As a wedding marks an important rite of passage, flowers and their colors and fragrances bring life to your wedding and transform the mood and ambiance of the evening. However, it is not an easy task choosing the right flowers at the right price. ‘Wedding flowers’ can be expensive and you need to be prudent. Go for seasonal flowers for it will cut costs. But if your budget is ambitious, go for the exotic. For example, Siam tulips are a popular wedding flower, especially in the West. Spectacular in appearance, Siam tulips, shimmering from white to stark pink, and shades of blue-violet, make for stunning floral displays, especially for bridal bouquets. You could have them flown in from Thailand, Australia or Holland. The classical rose, an all-time favorite, comes in a wide variety. Colombia, South Africa, Canada, and now India, are top exporters. For orchids, Thailand is the best. Now that winter is within whispering distance, go for the deeper, richer colors of the winter flowers. The deeper shades of glods, whites and greens lend the ambiance the perfect accent. A fall wedding should flaunt the flaming colors of the autumn leaves — reds, yellows and amber. You could garnish a summer wedding with pinks and sky blue. For ornamental displays if you wish to give your dream day a traditional and ethnic touch, opt for flowers like roses, marigolds, gerberas and jasmine. Orchids, carnations and lilies will give the venue a western look. One small but radical detail... Have your florist do up your bedroom or suite with apple blossoms or Camellia. Apple blossoms are to love, sensuality and fertility what roses are to romance. Delicately structured with soft, round petals and gentle curves, Camellia is all desire, passion and deep longing... So, go for them and make your wedding night too a special one!

Pick your favorite flowers and transform your wedding venue into an exotic and ravishing one... Spread the magic of color and fragrance...

Ashyana Banquets & Catering Hear it straight from the bride For the Indian Wedding and reception in the United States, we chose Ashyana Banquets for a number of reasons. First, of all the venues we spoke with in Chicago, Ashyana had the best experience with Indian weddings of all types. Second, Ashyana was prepared to manage as little or as much as we needed. This was perfect for me since we live in Seattle and my parents live in Chicago. Ashyana also took care of all the décor for the wedding & reception; from the mandap to wall draping to the flowers. This made it incredibly easy to orchestrated everything else behind the scenes, saving my sanity. The third reason was the good experience we had when my sister had one of her wedding events at Ashyana when she was married several years earlier.

The two dated for a little over a two years, and soon realized that they were in love. Sharbani says, “sometime we can just look at each other without saying anything, start laughing uncontrollably, maybe uttering a few words, while everyone else in the room stares at us like we’re crazy.” No Te Enamores Nunca De Aquel Marinero Bengalí is the title to an Argentine 80s hit pop song. The translation is Never Fall in Love with A Bengali Sailor. This was Sharbani & Tito’s first dance song for their wedding in Argentina (Tito is Argentine). When Tito told his friends he was dating a Bengali, many of them sent him this song as a joke. It's particularly relevant since Sharbani loves to sail!

The food was an incredible value – We did family style service because it felt more intimate and formal at the same time. The food was unlimited and Ashyana was flexible in creating delicious pan-Indian cuisine. Being half-Bengali and having lived in South India for a bit, I fell in love with the regional cuisine across India. It was wonderful to be able to pick and choose my favorites. Ashyana even prepared a few traditional Bengali dishes using recipes we provided them. Everything was delicious, high-quality. The spicing was just right, nothing was too oily, and everyone was impressed—both Indian and non-Indian guest. The big win for me was that two friends who refused to eat Indian with me in the past, enjoyed the food so much at Ashyana that they went Indian restaurants twice in the following month!

For more of Sharbani & Tito’s story, along with pictures, list of vendors and ideas, please visit website www.ashyanabanquets.com or follow us on facebook at www.facebook.com/ ashyanabanquets To Book Ashyana Banquets & Catering, please call 630-964-7090 Photos Courtesy of Agnes Malorny Photography, agnesmalorny.com

COCKTAIL OF GOLD & BOLD It’s raining yellow this wedding season... the vintage look is in... Adorn yourself in chunky, heavy gold jewelery and set the mandap aglitter...

F

rom the jewel-encrusted mang-tikka, to heavy jhumkas, rain-haars, bib-style chokers, heavy bangles, gold has again won the bid to officially host Indian weddings. While diamonds and other semi-precious stones remain the favored show stoppers, traditional gold jewelery, with a touch of sophistication, rules the wedding market. In Hindu mythology it is believed that gold is the essence from which the universe was created, and Manu, the lawmaker decreed that gold ornaments be worn for specific ceremonies and occasions. Therefore, gold became the symbol of purity, prosperity and good fortune. Indian bride is now teaming up her ensemble with elaborate, chunky gold jewelery. Trends show that vintage look is in and brides and grooms are choosing to go back an era to get that exclusive retro look. There is also a strong trend toward stonework. Intricate work of precious and semi-precious stones are being used both in heavy bridal jewelery, as well as light everyday wear. One large piece of stone in rings and earrings make a style statement. Another key trend is the layering of pieces. This kind of mixing and matching is generally done in a Bengali wedding where the bride receives all kinds of jewelery from relatives and has to wear them on her wedding day. By layering complementing chokers, chains and lockets, one can achieve an eclectic, contemporary look, that is striking in its overall effect. The individual pieces, on the other hand, are still simple enough to be worn on their own for a night out, or an evening event. Bib chokers, or collar-style chokers are also seen in most weddings these days. They are a great way to achieve more impact with less gold, because by concentrating it all at one point, close to the face, it is more striking than if it were to be spread out through multiple chains or strands of beads. Even though the whole show seems extravagant, details of these elaborate pieces make it worth its expense. This year rummage your grandmother’s locker for some elusive piece of rani-haar, a piece of Indian heritage that has almost become obsolete. Pair it with a simple necklace and gorgeous jhumkas and you will have heads turning, not only because you are the bride, but also because you will be in style.

Planning for a wedding? Don’t fret... visit a wedding fair and shop for your D-Day attire, jewelery, footwear, accessories, furniture and even plan your honeymoon...

Stalls displaying bridal couture, jewelery, and accessories at a wedding fair in India

ROBIN BANSAL, NEW DELHI

I

have to admit, having Franck at the house did help. Although I had no idea what he did there all day...”, says George Banks, the father of the bride in Father of the Bride-2. In the sequel, Franck Egglehoffer and his assistant Howard Weinstein are no longer wedding planners, they are now a pair of equally comical and wacky home decorators! Wedding planners are more than comical though, they are actually serious business. And that’s just one element among several that help you put together your dream wedding!

These and the others you will find at what are almost akin to renaissance fairs, showcasing boutique de voile-headpieces, veils, and accessories that reflect bridal dreams and colors. The place is agog with people who work with you to incorporate your song choices and offer customized solutions and accoutrements. That’s what bridal fairs are all about. So, you no longer need to pound pavements or pull hair what with mushrooming wedding fairs like Bridal Asia and Wedding Asia. Also called Bridal weeks, these are organized by entrepreneurs as one-stop venues for the “would be couples” and

their families — with options ranging from clothes to jewelries, venue to décor, and packaging to honeymoon destinations as well — these wedding fairs provide everything under one umbrella. The wedding industry in India has been estimated at a whopping `500-600 billion and wedding fairs have become integral to it. Ranging from two to five days, these “bridal weeks” have top designers showcasing their wares. Bridal Asia Exhibition — a popular annual pan-India fair — brings big names in couture and jewelry design together with mehendi (henna) artists, planners and travel companies. “We cater to brides

and grooms who are out shopping for that dream wedding to help them host a perfect wedding,” says Bridal Asia founder Divya Gurwara. Launched in 1999, the premier bridal show boasts stalls by lifestyle designers, gift-packers, fashion designers and choreographers, among others. Apart from bridal wear, jewelry and handbags, various accessory designers too exhibit at the show. The exhibition also showcases furniture, home furnishings and honeymoon packages. Mostly held across Indian metros in August-September before the wedding season gets under way in October, many

such wedding galas have come up lately. “The concept is growing every year now as all renowned designers are willing to participate. The success rate is high. In India, the wedding industry is growing by more than 100 percent every year,” Maninder Sethi, founder-CEO, Wedding Asia Punjab, said. “There is competition but then it is all about creating your brand and market. There are very good events in India as far as bridal weeks are concerned but if seen properly the number is not more than 10,” he adds. Designers too find such weeks a boon. “Such fashion weeks help in reaching out to more buyers and consumers. We sell in volumes compared to (regular) fashion weeks and all profit is ours,” designer Varija Bajaj, who has participated in wedding exhibitions like Shagun, said. If such fairs solve your shopping woes, it also serves as a business platform for sundry professionals, such as wedding photographers, planners, astrologers, caterers, florists and floral artists, bridal beauticians, and tattoo and henna artists. It’s a big opportunity for companies

dealing with party decorations, invitation cards, orchestra groups, and travel deals. If the consumers get to pick and choose, the exhibitors too get direct access to buyers sans mediators. Rajeev Naresh, event head for ‘Riwaaz — The Wedding Expo’, says such exhibitions are making serious inroads in India and abroad thanks to the consumers. “The response to such events is magnificent every time, everywhere — it is like collecting all the profiles of the wedding industry under one roof,” says Naresh, who has been organizing Riwaaz since its inception four years ago across India.

the major buyers for exhibitors,” he says. Concentrating mostly on Punjabis, it focuses on anything and everything for the turbanators and their lasses! “The first edition of ‘Wedding Asia Ludhiana’ (formerly) happened in 2006. Punjabi weddings are well known around the world for their grandeur and lavishness, so we thought of exploring that market,” Sethi says. “Wedding Asia mainly exhibits jewelry and bridal wear. We also have a furnishing division. It is like doing your entire wedding trousseau in three days under one roof. We also pick up the latest trends and that brings in tens of thousands of consumers,” he adds.

Punjab holds the top spot under this category with its colorful weddings. Sethi is now looking forward to the three-day bi-annual fair Wedding Asia Punjab in December. The first edition of the event was held in August this year with over 35 designers. “Our winter expedition in December is mainly for the NRIs. They are

The fairs are no now longer confined to India. Foreign markets too have floated such events that not only focus on Indians living abroad but also locals. London, an important hub for Indians, for example, hosts the ‘Asian Bride Show’. Organized by Asian Bridal Magazine, it now promises to be bigger

and better after the success of its 2010 edition. In the US, ‘Dulhan Expo’ is the thing. Sumit Arya, the CEO of Dulhan Expo, feels such expos are worth taking a day off from work or worth rescheduling a trip to India or Pakistan. Organized in New York and New Jersey four times a year in spring and fall, it attracts over 70 to 80 vendors from the wedding and fashion industries. According to a report, the average cost of ultra-rich weddings ranges from $20,000 to $2 million in the US. In Canada, Bridal Fantasy Magazine too has been organizing what is called ‘The Bridal Fantasy Show’ annually in Edmonton since 1981, offering prospective brides a multitude of choices for their wedding accoutrements. Another such international event is the four-day long ‘Indian Wedding Expo’ in Kuala Lumpur. It aims at providing a platform for the Indian community in Malaysia and for Malaysians in general to experience Indian culture and its rich traditions through Indian weddings and their multi-layered preparations.

travel From the palaces of Rajasthan to the beaches of Goa, the hill stations of Uttarakhand to the backwaters of Kerala, India’s diverse cultures and landscapes provide an array of picturesque settings for the ideal dream wedding. Beach weddings, palace weddings, island weddings, hill station weddings, forest weddings, houseboat weddings, cruise weddings, farm house weddings, the list can go on and on. India’s `500 billion wedding industry continues to grow at 25 percent annually. Employing an army of planners, caterers, designers, stylists, DJs, and even Bollywood stars — who get paid to shake their booty at weddings. India’s diverse landscape makes sure that it remains among the world’s most preferred destinations when it comes to tying the knot...

DESTINATIO UMAID BHAWAN, JODHPUR: Perching on a hilltop and crafted out of golden sandstone, this is an art deco marvel. Giving you a taste of grandeur, the Maharani Suite features a bathtub carved from a single piece pink Italian marble, while the Maharaja Suite sports murals of leopards and tigers. The palace reinforced its wedding credentials earlier this year when it hosted the nuptials of actress Elizabeth Hurley and Indian businessman Arun Nayar.

GOA: Goa is renowned the world over as an ideal venue for beach weddings. Its pristine beaches, vast stretches of swaying palms and breathtaking canopies, all combine to form a perfect destination for a dream wedding. There are beach resorts, hotels with their own private beaches, where one can arrange exotic and lavish weddings. Also, you can choose from a host of secluded beaches if you want a private celebration.

DHANAULTI, UTTARAKHAND: Imagine a wedding venue that doubles up as your honeymoon destination. Dhanaulti, a hill station in Uttarakhand, is just the perfect spot for love-lorn couples. Set amidst forests of oak and deodar, a pandal in the open will make for a picture-perfect wedding. The bride and the groom can ride to the venue on horses, a la Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in The Runaway Bride. The lovely weather and the fabulous view of snow covered mountains make it an ideal retreat for a wedding.

ONS BACKWATERS, KERALA: Fervent chanting of hymns against the backdrop of a houseboat lapping against the sparkling green backwaters... Whether it’s the backwaters, plantations, hills, houseboats, food, or the famous rejuvenation therapies, Kerala ensures the experience of a lifetime. Exotic local cuisine, traditional music, forest gardens, chapels and temples, boat rides and many more, await to shape a dream wedding.

LAKSHADWEEP ISLANDS: In recent times, the Lakshadweep Islands has become an ideal place for weddings. This breathtakingly beautiful island is situated over 240 km from the Malabar Coast in Kerala. Coral reefs, palm fringes and white sand make the coastline of the island. The sparkling water of the sea, replete with marine flora and fauna makes it an incomparable venue for weddings. The place is also home to a number of world-class hotels and resorts.

DEVIGARH PALACE, UDAIPUR: When Vikram Chatwal’s epic wedding came to Udaipur, the Devigarh Palace hosted a huge party. Nestling in the Aravali hills of Rajasthan, the 18th century palace commands one of the three main passes into the valley of Udaipur. It was recently re-styled with sleek contemporary designs to suit the tastes of its high-profile visitors. Some of the suites are gilded with semiprecious stones, rendering a royal ambience. A perfect place for those who prefer things kingsize.

Goa’s unsung fried fish safari There is more to Goa and Goan food than what an average traveler gets at fancy beachbelt diners. Delve a bit deeper to taste the real thing... MAYABHUSHAN NAGVENKAR, PANAJI

I

f you ever want to eat the best fried fish in Goa, you gotta do one thing for sure: Head inland away from the sea, away from the fancy beachbelt diners and those beach shacks offering hyped, assemblyline food. Under clay-tiled roofs, dodging tendrils of smoke in dim light and occasionally holding your breath to avoid breaths reeking of feni, pans laden with coarse flour-coated fried fish sizzle in delight in Goa’s taverns. Near Panaji, Kuttikar Bar lies at the end of a loose-gravel road behind what was once a stone mine. But for sea food aficionados it’s a gold mine as far as fresh fish is concerned. Run by former legislator Krishna Kuttikar, the bar serves some of the best fried

Guys, beat the heat in style this summer IANS, NEW DELHI

his summer replace stereotype of dressing with comfortable yet stylish clothes to beat the heat. Here are some suggestions by men’s fashion brand John Players: l Upgrade simplicity with a twist: At times it is indeed too hot to dress up, and the only option is a vest or a tee to rein in the summer. But who says a vest or a tee has to be ordinary? Pair a light orange slogan tee with a check shorts. Complete the look by wearing a slipper. l Go without socks: It is inevitable for any guy to leave his socks behind, but going socksless is in vogue this season. Team up your blue tee with a cargo shorts. Wear a brown boat-shoe or a red canvas shoe and rock the style statement in the town. l Fit is the king: With the mercury rising each day, styling yourself sensibly might sound a little counter intuitive, but masculine fit and proper tailoring will work in your favor this summer. Yes, fit is the king. Wear a washed out skinny fit blue denim and pair it up with a white polo tshirt to make a chic summer statement. Be bold: Summer is the perfect time to be braver with the choice of attire. The past two summer seasons have seen experimentation with bold colors and prints. Keep the trend going.

LONDON: For those interested in knowing the culture of pornography or the nature of sexual fantasy, here comes a first-ever “dedicated” porn journal. Named as ‘Porn Studies’, the openaccess journal is an “international, peerreviewed journal to critically explore cultural products and services designated as pornographic”, its London-based publisher Routledge said. According to the journal’s editors, pornography studies are still in their infancy and the new journal would focus “on developing knowledge of pornographies past and present, in all their variations and around the world”. The first edition has two key papers titled ‘Psychology and pornography: some reflections’ and ‘Gonzo, trannys, and teens - current trends in the US adult content production, distribution and consumption’.

According to Los Angeles-based independent scholar Chauntelle Anne Tibbals, who wrote the second paper, ‘Gonzo’ porn, loosely scripted porn in which the actors break the wall to interact with the cameraman or audience, is common today, in part because it is cheap to produce. “Web-based pornographic clips and live-streamed, interactive shows are increasingly getting popular,” Tibbals was quoted as saying in media reports. The internet has also enabled the rise of niche porn which caters to particular audiences. ‘Porn Studies’ is open-access journal for a limited period only so you can read all papers for free in the inaugural issue online, said Routledge, a global publisher of academic books, journals and online resources. —IANS

How to stay slim despite eating ‘fat’ food NEW YORK: Your closest pal or colleague may eat the same high-calorie food that you gulp down but know how he/she stays slim and trim while you keep on adding extra kilos around your waist? The answer lies in our muscles. The way the muscles of the inherently thin work may give them the edge, research reveals. “Daily physical activity is an inherited trait with a strong association to how fat or thin a person is,” said Chaitanya K. Gavini, a researcher with Kent State University’s school of biomedical sciences. Aerobic capacity is a major predictor of daily physical activity level among humans and laboratory animals. In the study, researchers compared female rats with high aerobic capacity (genetic tendency toward leanness) or low aerobic capacity (genetic tendency

o you often forget keys or glasses at home? Has leaving your mobile at odd places become your habit? Blame your genes for this forgetfulness. Those who frequently experience such cognitive everyday lapses now have an explanation. Psychologists from University of Bonn in Germany have found a connection between such everyday lapses and the D2 receptor gene (DRD2) gene. DRD2 has an essential function in signal transmission within the frontal lobes of the brain. Those who have a certain variant of this gene are more easily distracted and experience a significantly higher incidence of lapses due to a lack of attention.

“Such short-term memory lapses are very common but some people experience them particularly often,” said professor Martin Reuter from department for differential and biological psychology at

Mistakes occurring due to short-term lapses can become hazard in some cases University of Bonn. Mistakes occurring due to such short-term lapses can become a hazard in cases where a person may overlook a stop sign at an intersection. The psychologists tested 500 women and men by taking a saliva sample and examining it using

methods from molecular biology. All humans carry the DRD2 gene, which comes in two variants that are distinguished by only one letter within the genetic code. The one variant has C (cytosine) in one locus which is displaced by T (thymine) in the other. According to the research, about a quarter of the subjects exclusively had the DRD2 gene with the cytosine nucleobase while three quarters were the genotype with at least one thymine base. They asked participants to remember how frequently they experience these lapses — how often they forgot names, misplaced their keys. The results showed that functions such as attention and memory are less clearly expressed in persons who carry the thymine variant of the gene than in the cytosine type.

Depression, anxiety may lead to teeth loss NEW YORK: Dental decay and tooth loss may not be simple medical problems and psychological issues such as depression and anxiety are linked to these conditions, research suggests. “Tooth loss from caries (dental decay) and periodontal disease (when the gums detach from the teeth) is an outcome from complex, chronic conditions,” said t h e research. “Several bio-psychosocial factors are involved, including accessing care. als reporting dental anxiety may avoid dental care and individuals with depression may be negligent in self-care,” said R. Constance Wiener from West Virginia University. For the study, researchers used a data of 451,075 respondents. They selected those who were 19 years or older, and had complete data on depression, anxiety and tooth loss. The researchers found that depression, anxiety and a combined category of depression or anxiety were significantly different in tooth loss than in the participants without such conditions. — IANS
