ndia and the United States are natural partners and the world demands that the two nations cooperate, U.S. diplomat Kathleen Stephens said on August 25.

“Our ability to work together remains a foundation for strong partnership,” Stephens, the charge d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in India, said at the launch of the International Innovations Corps Leadership Speaker series of the University of Chicago center here.

Stephens said: “I arrived in India

at a very consequential moment.

Not only for India-U.S. relations but for India itself with the new government taking over.”

Stating that the U.S. government wants to work in a positive direction like that laid down out

by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said the U.S. wants to cooperate with India in the fields of health, climate change and infrastructure building. “India needs to create a million jobs per month. You don’t have all the time in the world,” she added.

The International Innovations Corps (IIC) fellowship program of the University of Chicago Center in Delhi aims to jump start the process of solution-based innovation in the Indian public sector.

Specifically, the IIC recruits, trains and send teams of the University of Chicago and leading Indian university graduates to work on ambitious development projects with the Indian government for one year.

epsico chief Indra Nooyi, who was on an India visit recently, met food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on August 25. Media reports suggest that a statement by the food processing ministry has said that it has asked the global beverage giant to bring down the sugar content in the soft drinks. “PepsiCo has been requested to further bring down the sugar content of soft drinks so that the health aspects of such products are duly taken care of,” the ministry said in a statement after the meeting.

Brown funeral: Call for justice IANS, WASHINGTON

eaders of the AfricanAmerican community asked for justice during the funeral of Michael Brown on August 25, and made a conciliatory call for change to avoid further tragedies like the fatal shooting of the young black man by a white police officer that set off two weeks of unrest in the U.S. state of Missouri’s Ferguson town.

The closed casket of Brown, 18, adorned with two photos of him as a child and several garlands of white and red flowers, was at the center of the ceremony at the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis. Hundreds of people had congregated since dawn to attend the service.

The Rev. Al Sharpton had words of comfort for the parents of the dead teenager, Michael Brown Sr. and Lesley McSpadden, and also a message

for the authorities.

“We are required to leave here today and change things.

Michael Brown must be remembered for more than disturbances. He must be remembered for this is when they started changing what was going on,” Sharpton said.

Among those in attendance were the Rev. Jesse Jackson; Martin Luther King III, son of the slain civil rights leader; director Spike Lee and three White House officials.

Sharpton slammed the fact that the youth’s body was left almost 4 1/2 hours in the street for all to see. The Brown case has exposed the racial differences still underlying American society, and the economic and social inequalities that exist in some communities like Ferguson, a town where two-thirds of the roughly 21,000 residents are African American, but all three members of the police force are white.

n a move marking the end of the era of stalwarts like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, the BJP on August 26 came up with a list of its highest decision-making body, the parliamentary board, which excluded the seniors.

The move marked the culmination of the generational shift that began in the Bharatiya Janata Party when Narendra Modi was made the prime ministerial candidate.

The BJP instead included the seniors in a separate group, the

The exit of Advani and Joshi is the first step, it will soon be a twomember party,” Tewari said.

Onus is on PM to bar tainted ministers: SC NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court dismissed on August 27 a petition on appointment of ministers with criminal background in what many termed a split verdict. The apex court refused to disqualify tainted ministers, leaving it to “PM’s wisdom” to decide his cabinet, according to reports.

A five-judge Constitution bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, R.M. Lodha, delivered its verdict on whether the Supreme Court could direct the Prime Minister to remove such ministers.

“Those in conflict with law and involved in offenses of moral turpitude and corruption should not be allowed to discharge duty as ministers,” the apex court observed.

“Prime Minister and chief ministers should not include people with criminal antecedents in their cabinet,” the SC added.

“Constitution reposes immense trust in PM and CMs and they are expected to act with responsibility and with constitutional morality.”

The Narendra Modi government has 11 ministers who have police cases against them.

ndian and Pakistani militaries on August agreed to reduce tension along the Line of Control (LoC), dividing the Kashmir region between the two countries, even as India lodged a protest over frequent violations of ceasefire agreement.

The decision was reached following India and Pakistan’s directors general of military operations (DGMOs) speaking to each other on hotline earlier in the day, Dawn reported.

“Both sides mutually agreed to reduce tension along the Line of Control and working boundary,” a statement of Pakistani army’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in

According to the organizer of the event, the partner countries in the seventh edition will include Australia, Canada, China, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore and South Africa.

The seventh edition of the bi-annual investment summit ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ will be held on January 11-13, 2015 at Gandhinagar.

Pronouncing the judgment, Chief Justice Lodha noted there was “no objective criteria” for evaluation of comparative merit.

“The approach had been adhoc and casual. There was no fair and transparent procedure, all resulting in unfair distribution of the national wealth. Common good and public interest have, thus, suffered heavily.”

The verdict came on a batch of PILs initially by advocate M.L.Sharma and NGO Common Cause.

Modus vivendi between Modi and RSS? Narendra Modi’s non-confrontationist style vis-a-vis the RSS, unlike in 2002, aims at ensuring peace and stability for the sake of India’s development AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

A

lthough the assertions of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat about India being a Hindu nation and that all its citizens are Hindus in a cultural sense have long been among the basic tenets of the Hindu nationalist outfit, the reiteration of these old postulates undoubtedly has something to do with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) assumption of power at the centre. The RSS apparently believes that the time has come at last for its dream of converting India into a Hindu ‘rashtra’ (nation) to be fulfilled with the help of a friendly government.

In fact, the RSS is even refraining from uttering the words, India or Bharat, which are used in the constitution to describe the country. Instead, the RSS uses the word Hindustan, the land of Hindus, presumably to facilitate the process of transition to the Hindu rashtra.

What is noteworthy, however, about these provocative postures — for both minorities and liberalminded Hindus — is that there hasn’t been a word in either endorsement or condemnation by the Narendra Modi government.

The silence is odd considering that one of the BJP ministers in Goa, who is a Christian, has dittoed the views of the RSS and has described himself as a Hindu Christian.

It is possible that the government and the RSS have evolved a modus vivendi whereby the latter will be allowed to pursue its proHindu agenda as long as there is no disruption of communal peace and direct interference in governance. In this context, the initiative taken by the Hindutva camp to put the construction of the Ayodhya temple on hold is probably a part of this deal.

As a VHP office-bearer has said, the outfit at present will “run only constructive programmes for expansion of the organization”, eschewing “an agenda of agitation (for) it can

It may not be besides the point to say that as a sop to the RSS and other hardliners for acting with moderation on the temple, the government has decided to allow them a relatively free hand in other matters. These apparently include not only an occasional cry for a Hindu nation but also giving them some leeway in determining the cultural agenda.

It is possible that more such

appointments of saffron aficionados will be made to outfits like the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, the Sangeet Natak Akademi et al to rid them of Congress appointees just as the Raj Bhavans are being politically fumigated.

n the high hostile peaks of the Himalayas where sustaining life is a challenge in itself, Indian scientists say they have found a “wonder herb” which can regulate the immune system, help adapt to the mountain environment and, above all, protect from radioactivity. Rhodiola, a herb found in the cold and highland climate, has led India’s leading scientists to wonder if it is the end to the quest for “Sanjeevani”, the mythical herb that gave renewed life to Ram’s brother Lakshman in the epic Ramayana.

“A concerted effort involving conservation, propagation and sustainable utilization of this unique medicinal herb will surely result in rediscovery of Sanjeevani for the troops deployed in extreme climatic condition along Himalayan frontiers,” said the director. The Leh-based lab of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the world’s highest agro-animal

research laboratory, has been researching on this wonder plant for more than a decade.

“While its adaptogenic qualities can help the soldiers in adjusting to the low pressure-low oxygen environment, the plant has also been found to have anti-depressant and appetizer properties,” said Srivastava.

In the barren glacier of Siachen where white is the only color visible for miles, depression is a problem troops face. The high altitude and harsh climate also make them lose appetite.

MISSING PUNDIT BRUTALLY KILLED

By Hi India Team CHICAGO (IL) -- Nobody knows.

Nobody cares. Well, Hi India was right when it published an article on the sorry plight of Vedic Pandits in its January 24, 2014 edition.

Ajit Panday, aged around 23 years, has been shot dead by an unknown suspect at Big Brother 2 Food Mart on 878 Norwood Road, Southeast Atlanta, Georgia.

Ajit was gunned down late in the night on August 24 as he approached the main gate to close for the day around 10 p.m.. He was found dead, with multiple gunshots, near the front door by the owner of the store - Poltu Roy. Though Poltu Roy said store closed at 10 pm, the video recording of murder shows the time as 11.28 pm.

Ajit, a native of India, was brought to the US by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi University at Fairfield , Iowa, more than two years ago. Ajit had left O’Hare airport in March to flee and wander into the strange world to find his living.

Ajit was the sole bread-winner for the family that included his widowed mother and two minor siblings. These innocent Vedic Pandits, like many others, were brought and kept in a fenced enclosure at Fairfield, Iowa, paraded before the prospective client seeking divine help to ward off evil and misfortune Strangely, Poltu Roy, owner of the property, and Guru Chand, owner/operator of the grocery store, washed his hands of any kind of liability--lack of security, putting new person to the late night shift and allowing him to sleep in the store.

He lied to all TV and newspapers medi aas well as the police that he was a friend and was just volunteering in exchange for a place to sleep.

One wonders whether it was illegal to keep undocumented person as an employee and not reporting his wages for tax fraud, allowing a employee sleep in workplace, putting and endangering the life of a person who not only came to the US only two years ago, but was not able to communicate in English (Thanks to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi University).

It is also a practice of some Desi business owners who are always on the look-out for the innocent, less communicative new arrivals from other countries and putting them in dangerous situations, including the business situated in rough areas, not train them about security procedures and providing enough security and putting them on for long hours.

BRAZEN STATEMENTS All this is done to obtain more profit at the cost of life of people like Ajit Panday. In their brazen statements, Poltu Roy and Guru Chand shrugged off responsibility by informing that they had cautioned Ajit Panday to be careful in night time--no other measures were taken--though as per him, Ajit was only volunteering.

Ajit was working in the store for more than two months and was working from 8 am when it opened till the closing time of 11 p.m.--more than 15 hours a day-all the seven days of week. No proper food, sanitation or security was provided at the backroom, where Ajit was lodged after work. In fact, Ajit was housed in in-human conditions with a 15-hoursseven-days-a-week schedule.

The video released by the police/ store owner Poltu Roy shows the victim Ajit walking outside to close and lock the security gate on the front door when his attention is drawn away from the building. He freezes in place as the armed robber approaches with his gun raised and forces himself inside.

In the South Asian community, there is fear that many more of such incidents of gruesome murders can happen if no Indian governmental action is initiated soon. The community believes that though Ajit is the first casualty that has come to light, there might be many more unknown cases of harassment and other kinds of inhuman treatments meted out to Vedic Pandits somewhere in the US. Our humble query for Honorable Consul general of India, Chicago is “Sir, what action you took in the matter of Vedic Pandits so far in eight months?

1. Is it enough to only inform the foreign ministry at South Block, New Delhi, for 165 missing Vedic Pandits?

2. So far only one MP in Indian Parliament raised a question about the conditions of Vedic Pandits. Is it enough concern shown by those whose hearts are in the right place?

3. Why nobody was sent to Fairfield, Iowa to take first-hand inspection and study the conditions of Vedic Pandits at Fairfield, Iowa?

4. Why till date no question is being asked from those responsible about the passports of Vedic Pandits being held as ransom by the sponsoring University of Vedic Pandits.

5. Till date, how many passports of Vedic Pandits have been retrieved from those responsible by the Consul General’s office?

6. Has the responsible entity been informed about the Indian government policy on passports of Indian citizens and their responsibility to return the passports to the nearest Consulate General office?

7. Why the CG has not initiated any action committee on the plight of Vedic Pandits? Is the high number of 165 mysterious disappearances not enough to draw his attention and action?

8. Why the CG has not tried to locate some of Vedic Pandits wandering in Chicago land with the help of local police, community and other social media ?

9. Why no police complaint, along with complaint to Immigration officials and the US Embassy in New Delhi, was initiated?

10. Why the CG has not shown any concern in more than seven months and any further development on the conditions and whereabouts of the Vedic Pandits?

11. Why no press release was issued from the CG office on the Hi India report and after meeting those responsible for the plight of Vedic Pandits?

12. Why community and other community leaders are not included in the efforts to locate and re-habilitate the Vedic Pandits. Or is that they have no knowledge or clue about Vedic Pandits?

13. Why not on a single occasion has the CG asked or requested for community support. Was his esteemed office unable to take any positive action because of resources or approval from the government of India?

14. Why no action or at least a courtesy visit was made to the fenced enclosure of Vedic Pandits at Fairfield, Iowa after the Vedic Pandits revolted against the atrocities of the management and was quelled with brutality by local the police and the Sheriff?

15. Why no scrutiny and review of recruitment and contract between Vedic Pandits and their sponsoring university was initiated at Chicago and at India?

16. Why no constructive efforts to locate to rehabilitate the missing Vedic Pandits were taken by the honorable Consul General of India?

17. Why the CG office did not demand the complete list of Vedic Pandits who arrived, left and are missing from the campus?

18. Why the CG office did not ask for travel details, ticket details and match with their arrival at Indian port?

19. Is the information on missing Vedic Pandits shared with other Indian Consulates in the US? Or, is it deemed fit as a local issue and it is just that the case is over after it is raised, initiated, its documents filed and its file closed?

ndia’s growing role and relevance in the security architecture of Southeast Asia and IndoPacific, including the disputed South China Sea, as well as ways to increase India’s integration in the region through trade, tourism and better connectivity were discussed during a meeting of regional heads of Indian missions with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj here on August 26.

Sushma, on the concluding day of her three-day visit to Vietnam, met the heads of 15 Indian missions in the region, including from the ASEAN and East Asia Summit countries. This is the minister’s second meeting with Indian heads of missions, after the one she held with those in Gulf countries following the crisis in Iraq two months ago.

The minister’s main message to the Indian envoys was how to turn India’s ‘Look East Policy’ to ‘Acting East’ and ways to meet the challenges that lie ahead, according to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin who briefed the visiting Indian mediapersons. At the meeting, the minister was given a firsthand brief-

ing by the Indian envoys of the challenges and opportunities for India in their respective countries of posting, on the regional security architecture and the role of India, said official sources.

The brainstorming on India’s role in the security architecture assumes significance especially after Vietnam sought greater Indian involvement in maintaining maritime safety and security and in settlement of territorial disputes in the disputed South and East China Seas. Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh had said at an ASEAN-India conference on August 25 that India and the bloc of 10 Southeast Asian countries should focus “more on maintaining maritime safety and security, freedom of navigation and settling territorial disputes.”

SILENCE OF COMMUNITY While time is ripe for some urgent action by powers that be, it is also strange that despite the Hi India’s expose of the shady happenings in its January 2014 issue, no community leader or community organization has come forward to inquire or show their support to locate and take appropriate action to help Vedic Pandits.

Probably it is not one of those photo opportunities with some political leaders or bigwigs of the Indian government which they can proudly hang in their living rooms and brag about to friends and families. Well, the pathetic conditions of Vedic Pandits do not fit into one of those ‘Who’s Who’ or big names, but there is no doubt that humanity demands that all those attention-seekers come forward and initiate some action.

We can go to prayer places, build big prayer places and get our names engraved on brass plates at the entrance as big donors but let us not forget that ‘Service to mankind is service to God,’ and that being humane is important than selfaggrandizement.

Now is the high time for community to wake up and come forward to support the bereaved family of slain Ajit Panday, whose body was still in mortuary after six days of murder, in want of funds to send his mortal remains to India.

Hi India took the initiative and tried reaching to the people concerned with shipping of the last remains of the murdered Ajit Panday to India but everyone of them avoided the direct question and pushed the blame on family in India to send the permission.

ISLAMABAD: Lahore High Court (LHC) on August 26 ordered filing of an FIR against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his party leaders over an incident of violence in Lahore, prompting cleric Tahir-ul Qadri to demand those found responsible be hanged.

At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured in a clash between police and Qadri’s Pakistan Awami League (PAT) in Lahore’s Model Town area, after a police party tried to remove barriers around Qadri’s house and the Minhajul Quran Secretariat.

Well, Ajit Panday’s death may be just another murder of a person at the wrong time and wrong place but the Hi India Team thinks otherwise, firmly believing that the gruesome murder could have been avoided if-1. Somebody, somewhere could have reacted strongly on the Hi India report published on January 24, 2014 about the pitiable conditions of Vedic Pandits and initiated some kind of positive action.

2. Those responsible for the plight could have spent more energy and resources on fixing the conditions of Vedic Pandits, including their justified compensation and other living conditions, other than damage-controlling their image and credibility tarnished by worldwide media attention.

3. Now in all of these and the loss of a son and sole bread-winner of the Panday family in Kaushambi, India, the moral responsibilities lie with the Consulate General of India. The Consul-General

egastar Amitabh Bachchan says he is all set to shoot for filmmaker Shoojit Sircar’s Piku.

The actor has just returned from Jaipur where he was accompanied by his granddaughter Aaradhya and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai to cheer for Jaipur Pink Panthers, a Pro Kabaddi League franchise owned by his son Abhishek.

And now he is ready for another challenge.

“Back to Mumbai... in a couple of hours to face another challenge... the camera for Shoojit’s film,” Amitabh posted on his blog srbachchan.tumblr.com on August 24.

It has been a busy year for the 71-year-old, who was part of the TV series Yudh and currently he is seen as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati 8.

Sircar is known for his successes like Madras Cafe and Vicky Donor.

Piku also stars Deripia Padukone and Irrfan.

It will hit the screens on April 30, 2015.

Happy Ending’ to hit theaters November end MUMBAI: Happy Ending, starring Saif Ali Khan and Ileana D’Cruz, is slated to hit the screens on November 28.

A romantic comedy, the film promises to “break the rules while playing by the rules”. The film is a roller coaster ride, a satire and an observation of the modern Indian man and woman, said a statement.

The movie revolves around romance and comedy, with a take on love, relationships, marriage, friendships, plagiarism and happy endings.

Mardaani is a film that makes all the correct noises about child trafficking. And by “correct noises”, I do mean the soundtrack, which is among the most evocative provocative and satisfying in recent times.

Normally in Bollywood, when films are done with live sound, the effect is scratchy and at times in inaudible. Mardaani cleans out the noises and yet retains a high decibel of authenticity in the complementary relationship between sight and sound. This is a film that knows its job.

This, then, is the world of Pradeep Sarkar’s derelict people.

Posh pimps and “cool” flesh traders gnawing at the fabric of our society by playing with the lives of the most innocent and vulnerable.

Without the least fuss, director

Pradeep Sarkar (so eloquent in his last film outing with Rani in ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’) provides us vivid glimpses into the life of the cop-hero Shivani (Rani).

Towards the end, the film’s elegant pace slackens, sags and almost collapses. But somehow, Sarkar manages to keep the proceedings from getting dragged down by the drama, no matter how unruly they progressively gets.

The narrative is well-stocked with signs of conscientiousness.

Human trafficking is evidently not a pretext to assemble a thriller here.

Shooting for ‘Gandhi’ was a revelation: Rohini Hattangadi

ctor and theatre personality Rohini Hattangadi played Kasturba in the late Richard Attenborough's Gandhi and says that working in the multiple Oscar winning film was a revelation for her. She said that the British film director gave a bound script to everyone and followed it religiously.

Attenborough died at the age of 90 on August 24.

“I still remember vividly how I got Kasturba's role in Gandhi. At that time I was doing Marathi theatre when casting agent Dolly Thakore contacted me to meet Sir Richard,” said Rohini.

“He was going from Delhi to London via Mumbai. Luckily, I was in Mumbai that day. I met him for an hour. We spoke about theatre and then he left. I later got to know he had so many other actresses for Kasturba's role. So I didn't really bank on getting the role. But the very next day Dolly called to say I had to leave for London for shooting immediate-

It wasn't easy for Rohini to pack her bags and hop on the plane, but thankfully things fell in place. “I was booked for the coming weeks for my play. I didn't even have a passport. So how was I supposed to leave for London all of a sudden? But Dolly said she'd help me with all the travel details.

In eight days, I got a temporary passport and the producer of my play was very accommodating.

Attenborough's Gandhi changed the lives of all those who were associated with the film. Most of all, it changed Ben Kingsley's life.

Gandhi was Rohini's first international film. “Shooting for Gandhi was a revelation for me.

We were all given scripts and then we were asked to do our homework. I searched for books on Kasturba, but I found only two books, that's all. So I had to rely on my own skills. At the same time Sir Richard did not allow us to deviate from the script. He was very clear on how he wanted my

English pronunciation. He didn't want me to put on an accent. At the same time, he didn't want any Maharashtrian or Marathi pronunciation in my speech. Sir Richard also made me and Ben Kingsley learn to spin the charkha. We spent two-and-a-half months learning both,” she said.

Released in 1982, the biographical film brought the life of Gandhi on celluloid and the appreciation that the film garnered.

He was a brilliant actor, director and a great human being. As a filmmaker, he was in love with Indian culture and he's the one who reinvented Gandhi for us.

Season II of ‘24’ will be as thrilling: Anil Kapoor MUMBAI: Actor-producer Anil Kapoor is glad that his debut TV show 24 will re-run on the small screen starting August 25 and guarantees that the show’s second season will be a as “thrilling” as the first.

Preity allegations: Fourth witness supports Wadia MUMBAI: The fourth witness called in by Ness Wadia in connection with allegations levelled by Preity Zinta against him told the Mumbai police on August 22 that everything was “normal” between the two celebrities May 30 during a cricket match at the Wankhede Stadium, here.

Bomb hoax in Ashburn

HICAGO (IL) -- An Ashburn neighborhood intersection was shut down last week as the police investigate a bomb threat made by a man they arrested following a traffic stop, but investigators found no evidence to prove that the threat was genuine.

The intersection of Kedzie Avenue and 77th Street in Ashburn was closed to traffic after the man told the police he had an explosive device in his vehicle when the police took him into custody at 9:18 a.m., the police said.

The intersection was closed as Police Bomb and Arson Officers investigated the threat.

TASCA (IL) -- A free Health Fair has once again been arranged this year at the Midwest Swaminarayan Temple in Itasca, IL on September 14.

Along with the Midwest Swaminarayan Temple, other institutions, including the Lohana Association of Greater Chicago, the Gujarati Samaj of Chicago and the Kadva Patidar Samaj of Chicago are also co-sponsoring the fair, the 35th Health Fair organized by Jayanti Thakkar in Chicagoland.

The fair is open to all in need of medical checkup and health-related problems, and requires no pre-registration but registration will start at the temple at 8 am and close at 11 am.

The participants, who have been asked to come with their list of medicines, will be tested for blood pressure, blood tcomposition, blood sugar, EKG, urinanalysis, eye screening, bone density tests, ENT exam, chiropractic consultation, physical therapy, dental examination, hearing test and pPhysical examination.

Information about social Services and benefits will also be provided. Also arranged is a diabetic education program.

This time, 300 free flu shot will also be given. Those with Medicare may bring their card so that more people without card can get free flu shot.

As many as 25 volunteer doctors and 75 health care professionals will provide their volunteer services for the event.

Patients requiring blood testing have bene requested to observe fasting for 12 hours before the test.

They have also ben advised not to take food or drinks after 8 pm from the previous night.

Any medical problems detected during the Health Fair can be further treated at the monthly clinic at the temple once a month.

HICAGO, IL -Preparations are in full swing to accord a grand reception to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at New York’s Madison Square Garden (MSG) on September 28.

Dr. Bharat Barai, president of the 11-member Indian American Community Foundation (IACF) specially formed last month to organize and make the reception a successful event, has been holding meetings around the US, including New York, to apprise the community of the visit and mobilize members, secure a limited number of free tickets and raise funds locally.

One such meeting of Chicagoland activists, organizations and news media was convened by Dr. Barai at Devon’s Northshore Banquet Hall on August 20 to inform the local IACF chapter about the efforts being made to plan the a memorable welcome for Modi.

Barai, along with the Overseas Friends of the Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP) and others have set up the IACF. The chairman of the IACF is Chandrakant Patel of Tampa, FL who is also the president of the OFBJP. The vice chair of IACF is H.R.Shah, owner of TV Asia.

A website, pmvisit.org has been created which allows organizations to register and reserve batches of seats which they would then distribute at their discretion to members or individuals from the community.

The meeting, in which Nirav Patel, Jitendra Diganvker, Balwinder Singh and Vinesh Virani also spoke, highlighted key issues such as ways to ensure fair and equitable distribution of the free entry passes, affordable transportation to the New York venue and a smooth

schedule for all.

It was decided that bronze sponsors will pay their way individually at $1000 as a matter of principle, and they have been allotted 1000 seats. The remaining 16,000 seats are available at no cost but secured by name.

The venue can accommodate up to 18,000 attendees. The organizers hope that about 50 Chicagoland associations will sign up.

Doors of Madison Square Garden will open at 9.30 am for security procedures, and the program will start at 11 am sharp, according to Dr Barai. The Prime Minister is expected to arrive at 11.30 am and speak for 50 minutes.

“There will be no introductions.

No one else will be on the stage and no question-and-answer session is planned.

There will be 45 minutes to an hour of cultural programs”, he said.

The Indian Ambasador to the US Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is hosting a dinner for Modi but only for his own invitees though IAFC will recommend sponsors to invite. There will be no state dinner but democrats and Republicans will meet Modi together on September 30.

Indeed, Dr Jaishankar, BJP leader Ram Madhav and a joint secretary from the Prime Minister’s office also recently attended the meetings of committees formed to organize the reception for Modi.

At a meeting held at the New York consulate on August 10, Dr Bharat Barai explained the steps taken so far. Leaders from the Overseas Friends of the BJP, which is not very happy that its leaders were sidelined from organizing the reception, attended the meetings.

In addition to core committees, a 38-member advisory committee comprising people from different states in India and belonging to different religions too met at the consulate.

The Indian Ambassador explained that the reception would not be an event organized by the embassy or the consulate, but an event of the people for the Prime Minister.

“It is above political, religious or regional considerations and the advisory committee reflects the diversity”, he said.

According to Madhav, the Prime Minister wants it as an event representative of an emerging India.

“Even though only 18,000 people can attend the event at the Madison Square Garden, it will be visible to Indians everywhere and it should be an event that

shows the unified spirit of the Diaspora”, he said.

The event will not be ticketed but the $1.5 million needed for the event will be raised from sponsors.

Dr Barai said the initial misunderstandings in the community had subsided and there was no controversy now..

The Madison Square Garden has been booked by Bharat Jotwani’s Poojanka Entertainment.

Dr Barai, who personally paid the advance of $165,000 to book the stadium and took responsibility to pay off the remaining $400,000, said he did not have the freedom to take all the decisions regarding raising money, but had plans.

“The plans will be discussed in the committees and will be submitted for approval before announcement”, he said.

Meanwhile, the OFBJP said in a statement that it was leading in organizing the event and working towards the mobilization of all Indian national and ethnic organizations to organize the event.

Vijay Jolly, the BJP’s global convener of overseas affairs, is on a 12-day visit of the US to mobilize community leaders and Indian Diaspora for the event.

He along with Chandrakant Patel, OFBJP-USA president, has been touring several American cities, meeting business leaders, US lawmakers, and think-tank groups in preparation for the community event.

Patel, along with the OFBJP team, is facilitating the tour to motivate OF BJP members and supporters for the event, and will present a report to t h e Pr i m e Mi n i s t e r, d e s c r i b i n g issues faced by the Indian Diaspora in the US.

The polish doubles as a way to prevent sexual assault. The nail polish changes color when the person wearing it is exposed to date rape drugs.

The person wearing the nail polish has to use their finger to stir their drink. If the drink has a date rape drug in it, the nail polish will change colors.

Reports says, 55 per cent of about 1,570 colleges and universities with more than 1,000 students received at least one report of forcible sex offense on campus in 2012.

Between 2010 and 2012 there were 14 forcible sex offenses reported on N.C State’s campus.

T LOUIS (MO) -- Finally, an agreement has been signed between Bal Vihar of St Louis and Hindu Temple. The pact marks a major milestone in the journey towards keeping the light of cultural torch burning bright.

On July 31, Bal Vihar presented a check of $250,000 to the Hindu Temple to begin construction of the new building adjacent to the temple. In an auspicious moment, the priest offered at the feet of God, the documents reflecting the good faith of both the parties and for a bright future to next few generations. After

the prayers, the documents were formally signed and presented to Hindu Temple along with the token amount.

Bal Vihar has also committed to help the temple raise additional funds and assured another $150,000 upon occupying the building. Both parties have signed a lease of 99 years. A total of 8 new classrooms and 2 large rooms will be built on the second floor of the community center.

The community center will also have a kitchen and large hall on the first floor. Bal Vihar is expecting to start its classes at this new facility from school year 2017-2018.

For Bal Vihar, the journey isn’t over. This was just a major stop to reflect upon the past and contribution to the community. It is also a moment of realization that the dreams of having a permanent facility for the community and supported by the community would come to fruition in next few years.

The new center is being built for other organizations within the community. Having a center next to the temple will also help the families to leverage the opportunity to instill more culture and faith in their children.

t’s an heirloom Anglo-Indian cuisine food festival at the Vivanta by Taj-Connemara, a top chef said, proudly showing a 108-year-old notebook containing recipes of a bygone era.

“The deciphering of the handwritten recipes in the notebook was the only challenge we faced while bringing back to life the dishes mentioned in it,” Arzooman Irani, executive chef at Vivanta by Taj-Whitefield Bangalore, told IANS here.

He was here to host the Chronicles of Whitefield’Anglo-Indian food festival at Vivanta by Taj-Connemara Chennai located on the Binny Road here at The Verandah restaurant from August 22-31.

The Made in Austria note book contains the recipes of around 120 dishes. “It was the family recipe book handwritten by Harry Blake, one of the original settlers of Whitefield near Bangalore. The notebook was handed over to us by his granddaughter,” Irani said as he served a ginger wine.

The non-alcoholic drink surprised one with its sweetness —and the gin-

ger flavor that followed.

What is unique about the dishes is that they are not very spicy nor are they bland. The dishes are very tasty, flavorful, mild and light on the stomach. The only spicy item is the fried masala prawn which Blake himself has termed spicy prawn.

“The dishes are made with locally available ingredients. While Blake made his fish curry with the fish caught in the local lake/pond, the prawns came from Madras (Chennai),” Irani said.

He said the whereabouts of Blake’s granddaughter are not known as she has shifted after her husband’s demise.

“She gave us the notebook two years back. We started our work after that and launched the menu at our hotel in Whitefield recently,” Irani remarked, adding that 35 of the 120 recepies were being served.

The ginger wine was followed by mulligatawny soup — a broth made with lentils and pepper. Blake gave a fruity twist to the soup by adding finely cut apples.

For the main course, Irani offered rice varieties — coconut, tomato, cabbage - along with vegetable stew, muttonball curry, country captain chicken curry and Blake’s signature dish Harry’s fish curry.

Green tea can protect spinal cord neurons BEIJING: Polyphenols found in green tea are strong antioxidants and can protect your brain in case of a spinal cord injury. Chinese researchers have found evidence that polyphenols can protect spinal cord neurons against oxidative stress and can reduce free radical damage.

In lab experiments over rats, lead researcher Jianbo Zhao and co-workers from the First Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning Medical University found that green tea extracts significantly lessen oxidative stress and reduce neuronal apoptosis.

“The results show that green tea polyphenols can help protect spinal cord neurons against oxidative stress exposure,” Zhao added.

This enabled the team to compare the older participants within their peer group and against the younger group who obviously have not begun the ageing processes in question. The results demonstrated age-related declines in executive function, aortic elasticity and cardiorespiratory fitness, a link between vascular health and brain function, and a positive association between aerobic fitness and brain function.
