ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 15 called for “urgent reform” of institutions such as the UN Security Council and International Monetary Fund (IMF) while stressing the international community should have zero tolerance towards terrorism. In his statement in the BRICS summit on the agenda “Political Coordination: International Governance and Regional Crises”, Modi noted it was taking place at a time when the world was facing a high level of turmoil and uncertainty and “remaining mute spectators” to countries in peril could have “grave consequences”.

Modi, who addressed his first international meeting as prime minister, said collective pressure should be exerted on states to deny sanctuaries and support to terrorists even as he noted that terrorism had not been combated effectively due to “different yardsticks”.

FORTALEZA: India is keen to further deepen and broad-base its strategic partnership with Russia, including in defense, nuclear energy, trade and investment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin in Brazil.

Modi, who met Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit at Fortaleza on July 15, expressed appreciation for Russia’s friendship and unstinting bilateral and international support for India’s economic development and security since the early days of India’s Independence, a press statement said.

Modi reaffirmed that relations with Russia will continue to enjoy the priority that they always had in India’s foreign policy.

rime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted President Barack Obama’s invitation to visit the United States in September and said he looked forward to a “result-oriented visit” with concrete outcomes that impart new momentum to the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Obama’s formal invitation was conveyed by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns who met Modi on July 11and delivered a letter from the US president.

In the letter, Obama reiterated his invitation to Modi to visit Washington in September and to work closely with him to make India-U.S. relations a “defining partnership” for the 21st century.

According to a statement from

the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi thanked Obama for the invitation and said he “looked forward to a result-oriented visit with concrete outcomes that imparts new momentum and energy to IndiaU.S. strategic partnership”.

Burns conveyed Obama’s desire to boost economic ties with India, including in next-generation technologies and manufacturing sector, cooperate in enhancing energy security and deepen security cooperation, including in maritime security, counter-terrorism and intelligence exchange.

The U.S. president also desired to expand consultation and coordination on Afghanistan and work more broadly for security and prosperity in Asia.

acing opposition heat, a cornered government on July 15 denounced yoga guru Ramdev aide Ved Pratap Vaidik’s meeting with Pakistani terrorist Hafiz Saeed and sought a report from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

The government’s disapproval of the meeting with a man wanted in India came as an unrelenting opposition took on the Narendra Modi government in both Houses of Parliament, leading to repeated disruptions. For the second consecutive day, Vaidik claimed he met Saeed — the mastermind of the Mumbai terror attack and one of three terrorists India freed in 1999 after an Indian Airlines planed was hijacked — as a journalist.

Both on July 14 and July 15 afternoon, the government only distanced itself from the controversial meeting saying it had nothing to do with it. It came out with a strong condemnation on July 15 evening.

Despite their majority, Bharatiya Janata Party members and their allies were mostly quiet in the Lok Sabha as the Opposition MPs shouted slogans. The Opposition was more vocal in the Rajya Sabha.

shok Khemka, an IAS officer of the Haryana cadre who had cancelled the mutation of a land deal involving Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra, may be deputed to the union government in two-three weeks, a central official said on July 15. However, the Haryana govern-

ment maintained that it has not received any communication in this regard. “It seems that Khemka would come on central deputation in two-three weeks,” an official of the Department of Personnel and Training told IANS in New Delhi.

Sources in Chandigarh also said Khemka has been cleared to be a joint secretary in the central government, but the Haryana government refused to comment on the issue.

“We have not received any communication in this regard so far. We cannot comment on this,” a senior bureaucrat told IANS in Chandigarh.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was also dismissive about the issue.

“This is an administrative matter,” he told the media in Chandigarh on July 15.

Shakti Mills gang rapes: Juveniles get correctional sentences IANS, MUMBAI

he Juvenile Justice Board on July 15 awarded correctional sentence to two juveniles for the 2013 Shakti Mills gang rapes of a photojournalist and a call center employee.

The duo has been awarded three years’ correctional sentence to be spent at a borstal school in Nashik where they will learn good behavior, according to Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who defended the two victims.

Clinton serves food to children in Jaipur IANS, JAIPUR

ormer U.S. president Bill Clinton on July 16 visited a kitchen here run by an NGO to oversee a lunch programme that feeds over one million school children daily across India under the mid-day meal scheme.

The kitchen here is northern India’s largest run by Akshaya Patra Foundation. It feeds almost 150,000 people in Jaipur, including 125,000 school children studying in 1,100 government schools in Jaipur

district daily under the scheme.

This was Clinton’s third visit to Jaipur.

“Clinton visited the areas where rotis and curry were being cooked and the places where pulses were cleaned and stored. He also saw the rice cleaning machine and was really impressed by it,” said Madhu Pandit Dasa, chairman of the Akshaya Patra Foundation.

He said Clinton was impressed by the roti-making machines and was surprised that how food reaches on time in all the schools where mid-

day meals are served. Akshaya Patra Foundation’s kitchen in Jagatpura on the outskirts of Jaipur is fully mechanised and even rotis are cooked in two machines. Each of the machines is capable of producing 40,000 rotis in an hour.

“We have 450 people, including dieticians, who prepare the menu for a month in advance. Based on requirements, vegetables, dal (lintels) and other things are purchased,” R. Govinda Dasa, Jaipur unit president of the foundation, told IANS.

The JJB found the two minor guilty of gang rape, criminal conspiracy, molestation and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.

While one of the accused juvenile was nabbed for gang rape of a woman photojournalist, the other was arrested for a similar crime against the 19-year-old call center employee. In April, the Sessions Court in Mumbai had awarded death sentences to three convicts involved in both the gang rapes while two of their associates were give life sentences.

India tops global poor list: UN NEW DELHI: India tops the list of countries with the largest share of global extreme poor though the poverty rate in southeast Asia as whole saw a substantial fall from 1990 to 2010, a new United Nations report said.

The poverty rate in southeast Asia fell from 45 percent in 1990 to 14 percent in 2010. Although poverty remains widespread in south Asia, progress in the region has been substantial, the Millenium Development Goals Report 2014 said.

However, India had the largest share of global poor at 32.9 percent, more than countries like China, Nigeria and Bangladesh, said the report which was released here on July 16.

India also had the highest child mortality rate worldwide in 2012 with 1.4 million children dying before reaching their fifth birthday, it said.

In 2012, south Asia accounted for 2.1 million of the 6.6 million deaths in children under five worldwide. India had the highest child mortality rate worldwide, the report said.

The eight MDGs, with a number of sub-targets covering a range of poverty, hunger, health, gender equality, education and environmental indicators, were agreed by all countries as an outgrowth of the UN Millennium Summit in 2000, most with a due date of 2015.

Is Modi sidestepping RSS? Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s close aide Amit Shah’s elevation to the post of BJP President shows that RSS had little or no say in his appointment AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

hen L.K. Advani was dragged kicking and screaming from the post of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president in 2005 under orders from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a diplomatic cable from the US embassy in Delhi to Washington stated that the event “demonstrated the power of the RSS — and will likely increase the party’s (the BJP’s) political decline”.

According to Wikileaks, the cable also noted that Advani was “shocked” by the failure of the “second tier” of the BJP leadership comprising, among others Murli Manohar Joshi and Sushma Swaraj, to come to his aid. While leaving the president’s post, Advani called for changing the “impression that has gained ground that no political or organizational decision can be taken (by the BJP) without the consent of the RSS functionaries”. Nearly a decade later, Narendra Modi can be said to have changed the impression by making the party choose its own man, Amit Shah, for the president’s post without the concurrence of the RSS. After choosing Rajnath Singh to replace Advani, they asked Nitin Gadkari to take Rajnath Singh’s

place in 2009. But four years later, the RSS had to appoint Rajnath Singh again as president in view of the allegations of sleaze against Gadkari. Now, it is clear that the RSS had little or no say in Shah’s appointment.

To stretch a point, it can also be said that neither did the BJP, notwithstanding the party’s formal association with the selection, since it has

been clear ever since Shah was credited with party’s excellent showing in Uttar Pradesh in the parliamentary elections that he will be anointed for the post with Modi’s blessings.

As Shah is known to be the prime minister’s ‘Man’ because of the long association between the two through the thick and thin of Gujarat’s turbulent politics, the belief had gained ground that

“When AAPI was first formed (in 1982) it was based on immigrant physicians trained in India facing a lot of challenges of discrimination in hospitals. As we have evolved with our kids in medical colleges, we have infiltrated the American system of medicine.”

“Our goal and mission are slowly changing from discrimination to becoming part of mainstream organized medicine so that it’s not only better for our kids, but for Indians and for the community as a whole,” Samadder said.

The chief minister welcomed the decision of the group and said his government would provide adequate land for the plant. A delegation of top officials of ITC led by its executive director Pradeep Dhobale met the chief minister.

Students condemn Israel’s attack on Palestinians HYDERABAD: A massive protest was held here on July 13 to condemn Israel’s offensive against Palestinians.

Hundreds of activists of the Students Islamic Organization (SIO) took out a rally and formed a human chain, demanding an immediate halt to Israel’s attacks. The protestors raised slogans of “Down with Israel”. They were also carrying placards with pictures of children and other victims of Israeli bombardment.

“Let Gaza live”, “You don’t need to be a Muslim to stand up with Gaza”, “Murdering an 11-month-old is not selfdefense” were some of the slogans written on the placards. The speakers urged the Indian government to cut

CSIR scientists accused of data fabrication BANGALORE: It is rarely that work of Indian scientists grab worldwide attention. But last week, a group of scientists from a research institute in Chandigarh entered the international spotlight —

although for wrong reasons.

Between January and May 2013, the group from the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) had published three research papers in PLOS ONE, a reputed science journal having its headquarters in San Francisco.

In what has come as an embarrassment to the Indian science community, the journal announced on July 9 that it was retracting all the three papers of the IMTECH group “as the published results were fabricated”.

Swaranjit Singh, senior principal scientist at IMTECH and key author of all the discredited papers, did not reply to email request for his comments on the wholesale retraction of his group’s all three papers — a record of some sort.

IMTECH is a flagship institute under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) globally known for the development of India’s first patented biopharmaceutical drug to dissolve blood clots. Group’s director Girish Sahni said an internal investigation showed the data falsification was the handiwork of a junior author who has since resigned.

House passes bill to transfer Telangana land to Andhra NEW DELHI: Parliament on July 14 passed a bill to transfer parts of Telanaga’s Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh in connection with the construction of the Polavaram irrigation project with the Rajya Sabha giving its assent to the measure. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 11, will transfer 136 villages, 211 hamlets and seven mandals of Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh, where they will become part of the East Godavari district.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured the members of the upper house that all precautions will be taken to protect the interests of tribals who will be affected due to the Polavaram project.

“Socio-economic impact of the project has been taken into consideration. Andhra Pradesh government has assured Chhattisgarh and Odisha that there will be a protective embankment for as many villages as possible,” he said.

EW YORK -- A grand reception awaits Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the 64-year-old former Gujarat Chief Minister arrives in New York on September

In what was the first meeting of its kind, about 250 members of the Indian-American community from all walks of life gathered at the TV Asia auditorium on July 12 to discuss a plan of action to accord a warm welcome to Modi.

The meeting was not organized by any particular organization but by a group of well-wishers who called themselves ‘volunteers’ with guidance being offered by Dr Bharat Barai, a community leader and philanthropist who is also an Indiana-based oncologist of repute.

Dyaneshwar Mulay, Consul-General (CG) in New York, said that the reception would be a community

event with no government patronage, adding that his office would play only a supporting role.

He advised everyone to work unitedly to make the welcome function a grand success.

It is learnt that besides a reception committee, various other all-inclusive panels will be formed to chalk out a grandiose plan for a memorable welcome to the popular leader who led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a landslide victory in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

The panels will comprise community leaders from all states of the US and people from various prominent Indian and ethnic organizations who are believed to have been searching for a venue that can accommodate at least 100,000 people.

The 60,000-capacity Yankee Stadium in New York and the 80,000-seat Giants Stadium in New Jersey are already booked for the last week of September for other programs.

However, though the meeting at the TV Asia

auditorium ended on a quiet note, everything was not hunky-dory during the lively proceedings with some of the members raising a hue and cry over little or no representation to New York and New Jersey in the panels.

Others also expressed the apprehension that Dr Barai, former head of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, would ‘hijack the event’ and ‘take credit’ for the success of the Modi reception.

However, CG Mulay soon joined the discussion and pacified all groups, asking everyone to bury the hatchet and appealed to them to stand shoulder to shoulder to see that the rare occasion passed off without any controversy.

York in September.

Some of those who attended the first-of-its-kind deliberations are believed to have created a ruckus at the meeting in organizing which Dr Bharat Barai, a prominent oncologist from Indiana and a former head of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, played a key role.

Dr Barai, in an email to Hi India, sets the record straight to end the needles controversy. The following is his version of what transpired at the meeting: “We had arranged a meeting, inviting 2 representatives of each Indian American associations in NY-NJ area on July 12, 2014 at the TV Asia Auditorium. The meeting was attended by about 260 people. Some uninvited elements also attended.

“At the beginning, it appeared that a small group of 9 people tried to question the meeting and the ‘Authority’ of the people holding the meeting. Mr Ankur Vaidya, president of a group called FIA spoke. He was explained the process and a document from the embassy for the Madison Square Garden was read.

“The rest of the 250 people were not happy at such distraction and tried to shout him out. We handled the situation coolly and calmly in a professional manner. We invited Mr Vaidya to come to the podium and give his views briefly. Rest of the people booed and shouted at him down.

I requested the guests to respect his right to give his views.

“He spoke calmly, gave some points and then he and 8 others left the auditorium calmly. Several speakers spoke and

stressed the importance of working in a united fashion to present the best show in support of PM Modi, India and the Indian American Community. We all emphasized that we were all working as volunteers for this cause. The attendees were very supportive.

“Then Mr Shalli Kumar from Chicago (who was not invited) came and stated that he had met the Consul General of New York 2 days ago and the CG had called him, advising that this meeting should be adjourned and the CG had told him that he will appoint a new committee for this event.

“That threw every one in confusion. He further stated that there was no need for fund-raising and he will give $1 million. Several members protested that one man was trying to buy out the program. Some members shouted at him that in the past, he had made many such donation promises, but never donated a penny.

“Some members present, texted to CG about the use of his name and “attempt by CG to impose his committee”, as announced by Shalli Kumar. CG called me and clarified that he had not stated any such thing. He confirmed that by sending the text message to that effect. He personally came there and clarified the situation appropriately. His role was very constructive.

“Mr Shalli Kumar’s role in using name of many dignitaries of India and Republican officials is well known and referenced on Google. The members present were requested to put their names for the committees that they would like to serve. The meeting ended on a very good note and work will proceed as planned.

“I must emphasize that out of 260 association representatives, only 9 (7 of them uninvited) tried to create distraction and falsify-dramatize in name of the CG of NY. The rest of the people were very decent and supportive.

“We have already filed application with Madison Square Garden and hope to sign the contract ASAP. The rest of the work is proceeding as usual.”

New Delhi, July 16 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday described Brazil as India’s “key global partner”, and reaffirmed to President Dilma Rousseff the “vast potential” for bilateral cooperation, a PMO statement said.

Modi was earlier received with full military honours at the presidential palace in the Brazilian capital Brasilia. He is in Brazil for the sixth BRICS summit.

“Modi noted that as two democracies and major emerging economies, India and Brazil not only had vast potential for bilateral cooperation, but also to strengthen each other in international forums and advance the interest of the developing world at large,” the statement said.

Rousseff, whom Modi congratulated for hosting an “excellent” FIFA World Cup, emphasised the international significance of the partnership between India and Brazil.

“Rousseff congratulated Narendra Modi for his impressive victory in the (Lok Sabha) elections and wished him all success for India’s progress and development,” the statement said.

Modi described the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit as “a historic one, which has produced two important agreements -- the New Development Bank and the BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement -- and lauded Rousseff for her guidance during the summit”.

NJ Transit plans more spacious light rail cars

EW JERSEY -- NJ Transit unveiled a prototype of an expanded light rail vehicle on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail that offers 50 per cent more seating capacity than a standard one, at the Hoboken Terminal on July 3.

One year after NJ Transit unveiled a Hudson-Bergen Light Rail train car that included two additional sections for seating, the NJ Transit Board of Directors approved adding 35 of the expanded light rail vehicles to the agency’s fleet.

The innovative, expanded vehicles— which offer 50 per cent more seating capacity than standard light rail vehicles— will be placed into the revenue service starting in late 2015.

“We’ve heard from customers through surveys conducted as part of NJ Transit’s Scorecard initiative that crowding on trains—particularly on the HudsonBergen Light Rail system—is one of their top concerns,” said NJ Transit Executive Director Veronique “Ronnie” Hakim.

“Thanks to a successful public-private partnership, we will be able to offer 50 per cent more seating capacity on our busiest trains at a fraction of the cost, enhancing

the overall customer experience on both the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and Newark Light Rail systems.”

The board authorized an additional $54 million under NJ Transit’s contract with Twenty-First Century Rail Corp., of Jersey City, to extend 25 Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and 10 Newark Light Rail vehicles, including spare parts.

Since the launch of Hudson-Bergen Light Rail in 2000, ridership on the line has grown steadily. In the past eight years alone, passenger trips have doubled to more than 45,000 a day, according to NJ Transit.

In order to address the need for increased capacity, the agency partnered with Kinkisharyo International, LLC, the original vehicle manufacturer of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail’s existing fleet, and Twenty-First Century Rail Corp. to

find an innovative, cost-effective solution that would not significantly impact the system’s infrastructure or require a costly investment in new rail cars.

Kinkisharyo developed a design for the expanded vehicles, which increase the number of sections from three to five. The additional sections increase the car length by 37 feet and expand seating capacity from 68 to 102 seats, as well as provide additional standing room.

Development of the five-section prototype drew upon existing resources and spare Hudson-Bergen Light Rail equipment, resulting in no additional cost to New Jersey taxpayers.

Retrofitting existing vehicles in the fleet with the vehicle extender represents a significant cost savings over the purchase of entirely new standard light rail vehicles.

At approximately $1.55 million a car, the cost for converting vehicles is about one-third the cost of purchasing new vehicles at about $4.6 million each. More than 80 per cent of the project costs are federally funded under the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program jointly administered by the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration.

NJ Transit driver caught reading while at wheel

AYNE (NJ) — A New Jersey Transit bus driver is being investigated after a rider caught him reading for 10 minutes while in stop-and-go traffic.

The commuter took photos of the driver last week while the bus was traveling along Interstate 80 in Wayne.

The driver read what appeared to be

a vacation pamphlet. Then he placed a hardcover book on the steering wheel and had his eyes on that at times.

The 324 bus, which travels between the Wayne Park & Ride and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, had about 40 passengers on board.

Air India plane returns to Newark after engine catches fire

EWARK (NJ) -- A flight headed for India was forced to return to Newark Liberty International Airport on July 14 afternoon due to an engine fire, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

The agency previously reported that the fire was caused by a bird strike, but later said that was not the case, and that the cause remains under investigation.

Air India Flight 144, with 313 passengers bound for Mumbai, had taken off from Newark at 4:25 pm, when the engine caught fire.

Erica Dumas, a Port Authority spokeswoman, said the captain turned the Boeing 777-300 around after reporting the engine had failed and he could see flames shooting from it.

The plane landed at 5:01 pm, and no injuries were reported, though the captain had already ordered an ambulance.

EW YORK -- At a gathering of Congress loyalists from the Tri-state area, an animated group discussion took place in an open forum at the Bombay Palace Restaurant in New York organized by Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC-I) USA and hosted by newlyappointed president Juned Qazi, on the subject of ‘Freedom and Liberty in USA and India’.

General Secretary Harbachan Singh moderated the event.

Madhu Goud Yashki was specially invited as Guest Speaker for the function, particularly since he had experiences on this subject from both the countries, having lived in the US for many years and then seeking a Lok Sabha seat in India as a NonResident Indian.

He served two terms in the Indian Parliament and worked closely with the Congress high command.

“Freedom and Liberty are the common bonds that connects USA and India”, said Yashki, “When USA was gaining its freedom from England, they chose individual liberty to be something they would never comprise on. Likewise India chose liberty as its foundation and incorporated it in its Constitution as a fundamental right.”

Responding to a question, Yashki said that a good government made it possible for every individual to live a life of dignity, adding that in such a scenario, all its citizens would be able to enjoy their liberties.

He praised the INOC-I for gathering people and creating movements to create a good atmosphere where individual liberties can be exercised.

“Without individual liberty, there is no meaning for freedom”, he emphasized.

He said that freedom in a democracy was a critical component and it could not be given or taken away.

“It has to be nurtured if democracy is to survive. The constitution cannot protect our rights if we do not protect the constitution. If we do not remove those who violate the constitution, we would be weakening our own rights,” Abraham added.

Juned Qazi was visibly very pleased at the scholarly discussion that took place and thanked the audience for their active participation. He warned of the potential threats to our liberties everywhere especially in India and urged everyone to be vigilant in protecting our hard-earned freedom.

Prof. Indrajit Saluja, publisher and chief editor of ‘Indian Panorama’, paid tributes to the US on the eve of the celebration of its independence.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office reportedly has cautioned prosecutors to review all autopsies performed by Hisham Hashish (52) who has done post-mortem examinations in Camden, Gloucester, Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties.

Hashish surrendered his license in New Mexico in 2011 because of allegations of negligence. He was hired in New Jersey on May 23, 2011

TLANTIC CITY,NJ-- Atlantic City’s mayor says his city is in the midst of a painful transition from a gambling-centric resort to one where betting is only one of many things to do.

Mayor Don Guardian says he believes top elected officials still strongly support his city, and will give it the full five-year turnaround time that Gov. Chris Christie promised before considering expanding gambling to the northern New Jersey Meadowlands and elsewhere.

But within the last week, state Senate President Steve Sweeney suggested a referendum in 2015 on expanding casino gambling beyond Atlantic City, and Christie said he’d talk about it.

Guardian and city tourism and marketing officials say Atlantic City’s nongambling revenues are increasing, even as casino revenue continues to plunge.

As many as three casinos may close this year.

Woman found dead in swimming pool Montgomery store staffer shot dead

IX HILLS (NY) -- An Indian-origin woman was found dead in a swimming pool of a house, where she was attending a party.

According to the local police investigating the drowning incident, the body of Rajkumari Motwani, 55, was found at the bottom of the swimming pool when residents of a home in Long Island were cleaning up their backyard following a party on July 12 night.

They noticed a body in the deep end of the backyard pool. Police officers responded to a 911 call from the resident early on July 13 morning and Motwani’s body was pulled out from the water, the

Suffolk Police said.

Motwani’s body has been transported to the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office.

She was a guest at the birthday party and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police have not found any criminality in relation to Motwani’s death following a preliminary investigation after questioning residents of home and other party-goers.

A neighbour of the house where the party was held said the bash ended at about 11:30 pm local time.

She said two adult children lived in the house that was once inhabited by their parents, who moved to a different city two years ago.

EW JERSEY -The Montgomery Police Department (MPD) is investigating a shooting that left one young store employee dead on the night of July 13.

The police have initiated the city’s 15th homicide investigation of this year following the shooting death of 26-year old Rahul Patel of Montgomery.

Patel was found by the police and fire medics who responded to reports of a subject shot at around 9:15 p.m. in the 4400 block of Troy Highway and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sgt. Denise Barnes, MPD spokeswoman.

Bharat Patel, who said he was a close friend of the family, said Rahul was working at the Troy Highway Package store, a convenience store on Troy Highway the night he was killed.

He said Rahul was shot after an unknown man came barging into the store with a gun wanting to rob it.

The police have not confirmed the death to be connected to a robbery and said the circumstances surrounding this fatal shooting were still under investigation.

Bharat and other friends and family said they rushed over as soon as they heard news of the shooting.

Almost a dozen customers stopped by the store on July 14 afternoon to see if the store was open after the news from the night before.

The store was closed.

The store was a family venture, and the Patels are closely-knit.

“Its’ a big loss for the family. He was the family’s only son,” Bharat Patel said.

“There were three shots total. One of them hit Rahul and another one went through the cash register,” Bharat Patel said. “There was a 50 or 60-year-old working here. The robber pushed him when he entered the store and just fired the shots at Rahul.”

“The whole thing, it’s just sad,” Turner said.

Rahul had just been enjoying a birthday party with his friends and family earlier that day before he went to work and was shot, Bharat said.

Son of Vinod Patel and Kailash, Rahul was a native of Bamangam in Anand district of India’s Gujarat state, and his family lives in Dhansura in Sabarkantha district.

A few years ago, he migrated to New Jersey for a bright future and then moved to Alabama.

n a significant finding, NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has discovered its first meteorites on the red planet, which scientists have named ‘Lebanon’ and its smaller companion ‘Lebanon B’.

The Mars meteorites were found May 25 and NASA released a detailed photo of the Lebanon meteorites on July 15.

Curiosity took detailed pictures of the main Lebanon meteorite using its high-resolution Chem-Cam and Remote MicroImager cameras.

The images revealed strange angular cavities in the surface of the rock.

Webster said Curiosity also found a third meteorite at the same time it spotted the Lebanon rocks. In a raw photo from Curiosity, the third meteorite which is also about 7 feet wide can be seen just beyond the closer Lebanon meteorites.

“Heavy Metal! I found an iron meteorite on Mars,” Curiosity’s handlers wrote on the mission’s Twitter page. The three meteorites are the first space rocks on Mars discovered by the Curiosity

rover since it landed on the Red Planet in August 2012, Webster added.

“One possible explanation is that they resulted from preferential erosion along crystalline boundaries within the metal of the rock,” NASA officials wrote in a statement.

“Another possibility is that these cavities once contained olivine crystals, which can be found in a rare type of stony-iron meteorites called pallasites, thought to have been formed near the core-mantle boundary within an asteroid.”

By uploading the photos directly to the cloud, the app ensures that there are no missed opportunities as there is no question of “No Storage” message being popped up, reports added.

orn addiction triggers same brain activity in people as if they are on drugs, significant research reveals.

People with compulsive sexual behaviors — an obsession with sexual thoughts, feelings or behaviors which they are unable to control — behave in the same way as patients with drug addictions, according to researchers from the University of Cambridge in Britain.

“The patients in our trial were people who had substantial difficulties controlling their sexual behaviors and this was having significant consequences for them, affecting their lives and relationships,” explained Valerie Voon at the Uni-

versity of Cambridge.

During the study funded by the Wellcome Trust, 19 participants were shown a series of short videos featuring either sexually explicit

f you cannot resist the sweets kept in your refrigerator and crave for food even after a sumptuous meal, you could be a victim of overeating, warn health experts. Stress, long hours of starvation and the wide variety of food options available in the market contribute to overeating, they say.

Listing the various reasons that lead to overeating, dietitian Akshita Aggarwal told IANS: “Usually, when people feel emotional, stressed, are under any trauma or have any discomfort, they tend to eat a lot.”

She added that sometimes people overeat when there is a long gap between two meals. “Some people eat more to feel better and overcome trauma,” Aggarwal added.

“Apart from overeating, stress can also cause under-eating. Under eating leads to hair fall, calcium deficiency, less immunity, lack of glow on the face and anemia,” Choudhary added.

However, Pawan Sethi, nutritionist at Dr. Rachna’s Diet in Mansarovar Garden, said that the percentage of people who eat when stressed is lower.

“Rather, people these days earn well and have more affordable food options to select from. Also, the number of outings have increased where they end up eating more junk which leads to their being overweight,” added Sethi.

Experts add that skipping or having a late breakfast is also a reason for being overweight.

“These days, people leave for work early and by the time they have their food, it gets late. Since

“The condition is usually seen in youngsters as they eat more junk food, but even elders suffer from the same problem,” said Sethi.

Adding, ‘If compulsive overeating, is not treated it can lead to diseases like obesity, diabetics, heart disease, hypertension, depression, kidney disease and high cholesterol.’

The group receiving text messages decreased their self-reported binge drinking days by 51 percent and decreased the number of self-reported drinks per day by 31 percent.

“We need to intervene in a meaningful way in the health and habits of people when they are young,” Suffoletto added.

People who are at risk of developing type-1 diabetes can also benefit from the nanotech microchip-based device because it will allow doctors to quickly track if they can have the disease later in life. “With the new test, not only do we anticipate being

able to diagnose diabetes more efficiently and more broadly, we will also understand diabetes better,” said Brian Feldman, at Stanford University.

The handheld microchips distinguish between the two main forms of diabetes mellitus — type-1 and type-2 — which are both characterized by high blood-sugar levels but have different causes and treatments. The test was validated with blood samples from people newly diagnosed with diabetes and from people without diabetes. Both groups had the old test and the microchip-based test performed on their blood.

The new microchip uses no radioactivity, produces results in minutes and requires minimal training to use.
