US takes India to WTO over solar industry United States challenges India’s domestic content requirements in Phase II of India’s National Solar Mission IANS, WASHINGTON

I

n another potential blow to India-U.S. ties after the Khobragade affair, United States on February 10 challenged India’s domestic content requirements in Phase II of India’s National Solar Mission (NSM). “These domestic content requirements discriminate against U.S. exports by requiring solar power developers to use Indian-manufactured equipment instead of US equipment,” said U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Mike Froman. Announcing the “trade enforcement action” against India, Froman said it has requested World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement consultations with India on the issue.

“These unfair requirements are against WTO rules, and we are standing up today for the rights of American workers and businesses,” he said. “We also take this action in support of the rapid global deployment of renewable energy.” “These types of ‘localization’ measures not only are an unfair barrier to US exports, but also raise the cost of solar energy, hindering deployment of solar energy around the world, including in India,” he added. In October 2013, India’s cabinet approved measures governing the implementation of Phase II of the NSM. For solar projects under Phase II, India is again imposing domestic content requirements, under which solar power developers must use Indian-manufac-

tured solar cells and modules instead of US or other imported equipment, USTR said. Moreover, the Phase II domestic content requirements have been expanded to cover thin film technology, which was exempt from such requirements under Phase I, USTR said. As thin film currently comprises the majority of U.S. solar product exports to India, these domestic content requirements are likely to cause even greater harm to U.S. producers than under Phase I, it said. A request for consultations is the first step in the WTO dispute settlement process, and consultations are intended to help parties find a solution at this stage.

Obama warns firms of ‘India-US partnership would keep growing’ violating sanctions on Iran WASHINGTON: Senior Obama administration official has expressed confidence that despite recent setbacks India-United States strategic partnership will continue to grow whatever the outcome of India’s upcoming national elections. “For almost two decades, in both India and the United States, Presidents and Prime Ministers and political parties have come together and worked to overcome old schisms,” US National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice said on February 7.

ompanies that explore business opportunities in Iran do so “at their own peril”, US President Barack Obama said on February 11, vowing that the U.S. will come down “like a ton of bricks” on sanctions violators. The president made the remarks at a joint news conference with his French counterpart, Francois Hollande, alluding to a trip to Iran by a large French trade delegation earlier this month, Xinhua reported. “President Hollande and I agree on the need to continue enforcing existing sanctions even as we believe that new sanctions during these negotiations would endanger the possibility of a diplomatic solution,” Obama said. “Businesses may be exploring — are there some possibilities to get in sooner rather than later if and

when there is an actual agreement to be had?” Obama said. “But I can tell you that they do so at their own peril right now, because we will come down on them like a ton of bricks.” World powers sealed a landmark preliminary deal with Iran in November, under which Tehran agreed to halt its most sensitive nuclear operations in return for winning some relief from sanctions. The United States and the European Union have suspended some sanctions on Iran under the interim deal. But it does not mean opening business. Washington, has warned that the interim nuclear deal does not mean Iran is “open for business” and vowed to vigorously enforce existing sanctions.

“Piece by piece, we’re establishing a lasting partnership that’s equipped to tackle today’s global challenges,” she said addressing deleSusan E. Rice gates attending the Aspen Institute U.S.-India Dialogue at the Indian ambassador S. Jaishankar’s residence. “And, the United States is confident that, whatever the outcome of India’s upcoming national

elections, the cooperation and strategic partnership between our nations will continue to grow,” Rice said. The dialogue has been convened by the Aspen Strategy Group, a bipartisan US policy forum, in conjunction with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Aspen Ananta Centre to take a broad look at the Indo-US relationship. President Barack Obama’s key adviser said she was not suggesting “that there aren’t real challenges to overcome.”

Koirala is new Nepal PM

Nepal’s newly elected Prime Minister Sushil Koirala (centre) with colleagues. ANIL GIRI, KATHMANDU

N

epal’s newly-elected Prime Minister Sushil Koirala was sworn in here on February 11. No member of the coalition partner Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist’s (CPN-UML) members, however, took oath, the party insisting on the home portfolio. Koirala, of the Nepali Congress, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Baran Yadav in the presence of top leaders of major political parties, heads of security agencies, members of Kathmandu-based diplomatic corps and senior government officials. Only a two-member cabi-

net was installed on February 11 following Koirala’s oath-taking and it is likely that the cabinet will be expanded later only after the row over portfolio allocation is settled. The ticklish issue of allocation of portfolios, particularly the home ministry, soured the relations between the two largest parties — the Nepali Congress and the CPNUML — within 24 hours of Koirala’s election to the post of prime minister. Though CPN-UML leaders did attend the swearing-in ceremony at the President’s Office, no one from the party joined the cabinet as the two coalition partners failed to agree on distribution of ministerial berths.

India, China hold border talk NEW DELHI: India and China held their 17th round of border talks here on February 11, stressing on peace and tranquility on their 4,000-km disputed boundary, and are set for their annual defense dialogue on February 24. Special representatives — National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon and Chinese State Councillor and top diplomat Yang Jiechi — met here on February 10 and 11 for talks on the boundary question. The talks between both sides have crossed the first stage — on agreeing to settlement of the boundary question. The second stage talks — on the “framework for resolution of the boundary question” — has been continuing for the past eight years. After the “framework” question is resolved, both sides will proceed to the third stage of talks.

236 candidates file nominations in Maldives MALE: A total of 236 candidates have so far filed nominations for the March 22 elections to Maldives’ 85-seat parliament, media reported on February 11 citing the Elections Commission of the archipelago nation. Ali Mohamed Manik, a member of the commission, Monday said the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had filed nominations for all the 85 seats of the People’s Majlis, according to Haveeru Online. Manik said the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had filed

nominations for only 37 seats, despite the party’s announcement that it would contest from 50 constituencies. The pro-government Jumhoory Party (JP) had filed 29 nominations. The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) had filed six nominations, the Adhaalath Party 11, and the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) five, Manik said. Adhaalath party, a religious conservative party, has decided to run from 13 constituencies independently after the ruling coalition failed to meet their demand for more seats.

Sharif heads to Turkey for trilateral summit ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on February 12 left for Ankara on a three-day visit to attend the Turkey-Afghanistan-Pakistan Trilateral Summit, officials said. The trilateral meeting, an important platform for high-level dialogue, security cooperation, and economic development partnership, was launched in 2007. The summit is taking place in the backdrop of important political and security transitions in Afghanistan, including presidential and provincial council elections April 5 and the withdrawal of NATO/ISAF forces by

December 31, 2014, said a statement issued by the Pakistan foreign ministry. The theme of the 8th Trilateral Summit is ‘Sustainable Peace in the Heart of Asia’. The last summit was held in December 2012 in Ankara. During the summit, Sharif will have extensive interaction with Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as well as Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai. Senior members of the Prime Minister’s delegation would have meetings with their respective counterparts in trilateral formats.

alala Yousafzai, the teenaged Pakistani education activist attacked by the Taliban, is among the three candidates nominated for this year’s World Children’s Prize, also known as the Children’s Nobel. Yousafzai has been nominated “for her courageous and dangerous fight for girls’ right to education”, according to the website of the foundation that presents the award. “She started to speak out for girls’ rights at the age of 11, when the Taliban banned girls from going to school in the Swat Valley in Pakistan,” it stated. “Malala defied the rules and kept going to school. Her life was under threat and at times she had to go into hiding. Finally, at the age of 15 Malala was shot and almost killed by the Taliban on her way home from school. But Malala survived.” According to Yousafzai’s candidate profile, the Taliban thought they could silence Malala by killing her. “Instead they gave her an even stronger voice, which can

ALGIERS: An Algerian military plane that crashed into a mountain in the country’s eastern region had 78 passengers on board and only one survived, the country’s defense ministry said. The C-130 Hercules military plane crashed in the province of Oum El Bouaghi around midday on February 11 on its way from the Tamenrasset airport, some 2,000 km southeast of Algiers, to the Constantine airport, 500 km east of Algeria’s capital Algiers, Xinhua reported citing a statement issued by the ministry. It carried 74 passengers - members of the Algerian armed forces and their relatives - and four crew members, the statement said. A survivor and 76 bodies were recovered at the crash site, including remains of four women, on Mount Fortas at an altitude of 1,400 meters.

One passenger has not been accountable so far. The sole survivor was seriously injured in the head and leg and has been taken to a military hospital in Constantine. Local newspaper El Watan said one of the two black box flight recorders has been located. Earlier reports by local media said there were 103 people on board the plane.

ailway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge presented the interim rail budget for the next fiscal Wednesday with no hike in fares or freight, introducing 72 new trains and connectivity to two more northeastern states. In what was his personal first and the last such exercise in the 15th Lok Sabha for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Kharge also promised a new tariff-setting body and said work on eastern and western freight corridors was progressing well. The minister only read a part of his speech, for all of 14 minutes in the lower house of parliament. The full speech copy, along with the

other documents that included a vote on account for the first four months of the next fiscal, was laid on the table of the house. The minister announced that 72 new trains were being introduced, including 17 premium trains, 38 express trains, 10 passenger trains, four suburban trains and three diesel

locomotive inter-city trains for medium distances. He said despite the resource constraints, the targets for the current fiscal were fully achieved, with some 2,207 km of new lines, adding two more northeastern states will be on the country’s railroad map this fiscal — Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya. Anticipating a healthier economic growth, the freight traffic target, he said, was also proposed higher at 1,101 million tonnes. “Specially designed coaches for adverse weather conditions have been inducted for rail travel in Kashmir valley. Also corrosion-resistant and lighter wagons to carry extra pay-load and higher speed of up to 100 km per hour have been developed,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi has made it quite explicit in his TV interview that he has no fire in his belly for political power. But the Congress party is splurging hundreds of crores of rupees on a publicity blitz to boost his image. Is the party embarked on this media blitz despite the party vice president or is all of it happening under his supervision? Why these confusing signals? Has the party calculated that in India, renunciation is deified? Is this why they are sending a prime ministerial candidate into electoral combat when he is demonstrably disinter-

oved by an insight gained during a vacation in India four years ago, a British citizen of Indian origin has launched an initiative that provides 22 hospitals across the country with the latest medical equipment to make cancer treatment accessible and affordable. Shashi Kant Baliyan, who is in India for three years, recalls how his Diwali holiday here took a new turn after he attended a medical conference in Hisar in Haryana in 2009 with a friend, a radiation oncologist. “I realized that people had to travel far for cancer treatment.

the country. Young people are getting affected by it and you cannot imagine the number of queries I get,” said Baliyan, a doctor and a management professional. According to the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, there are 2 to 2.5 million cancer patients in India at any given time. The equipment is maintained by his company on contracts that run 15-20 years till the machine outlives its life and becomes obsolete, said Baliyan, who lives with his wife and children in Gurgaon, Haryana. “In two years, 22 hospitals in Delhi, Hisar, Vadodara, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Patna, Indore and Gwalior have signed contracts

‘Our initiative has also cut costs for patients by 50 percent or even more as compared to any diagnostic centre’ Even then most hospitals in smaller towns were not equipped with the right equipment to treat them. I went back to Britain and discussed it with a few friends after which I started shunting between London and Delhi to do something concrete about this,” Baliyan told IANS. Baliyan’s ClearMedi Healthcare — a joint venture between Medipass (La Repubblica group) S.r.l. Italy, KOS S.p.A. Italy and Clearview Healthcare India — providing hospitals with the best equipment for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Hospitals, private or government-run, are also supported by trained manpower and its staff trained by specialists. All this has helped cut costs by 50 percent or more. “Among the equipment we supply are linear accelerators, radiology equipment and those used for nuclear medicine. We have focussed on cancer because of its high incidence in

with us,” Baliyan said. In Delhi’s Hamdard Imaging Centre (Jamia Hamdard), his company has supplied equipment for MRIs, CT scans, Mammography and Digital X-Rays, while Ashwin Hospital in Coimbatore has been equipped with a Linac (linear particle accelerator used for radiation therapy). “Other than accessibility to diagnosis and treatment, our initiative has also cut costs for patients by 50 percent or even more as compared to any diagnostic centre. An MRI scan costs Rs.8,000 in a diagnostic centre, of which half goes to the doctor. We remove those frills and charge the basic cost,” he said. “In Delhi, the cost is half. In Hisar, the cost is one-third. The patient pays the hospital directly, not to us. So, there is no discrepancy.” A CT scan in a ClearMediaided hospital costs `1,600. Elsewhere, the cost ranges between `4,000 and `5,000.

anhattan’s IndianAmerican United States Attorney Preet Bharara has struck again with the conviction of an Indian-American portfolio manager, giving him an enviable 79-0 record in his four-year long crackdown on insider-trading on Wall Street. A jury of seven women and five men found former SAC Capital Advisor portfolio manager Mathew Martoma, 39, guilty on one count of conspiracy and two counts of securities fraud. Martoma could end up with a 15-year sentence, given that he was involved in

No compensation for Indian doctor SYDNEY: The government of the Australian state of Queensland has said it will not approve any compensation request by India-born doctor Jayant Patel for the Jayant Patel time he spent in jail. The former surgeon at Bundaberg Base Hospital in the Australian state of Queensland, was last year convicted of fraud and sentenced to two years in prison but he walked free due to the time he had already spent in custody for earlier convictions that were subsequently overturned by a higher court. Patel was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Rodney Vowles, 66, by unnecessarily removing his colon and rectum in 2004. Jarrod Bleijie, attorney-general of Queensland, said that Patel may seek damages. “I have not received anything in writing in respect to that,” ABC News quoted Bleijie as saying. “As I understand it, Patel has indicated that he will be writing to the government wanting compensation. There will be no compensation, there will be no entertainment of the idea of compensation,” Bleijie added.

India back in Olympic fold International Olympic Committee lifts 14-month ban in the wake of ‘free and fair elections’ IANS, NEW DELHI

ndia was on February 11 back in the Olympic fold with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lifting its 14month ban in the wake of “free and fair elections” to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) two days ago. The decision, by the IOC Executive Board (EB) at an ad-hoc meeting in Sochi, reinstated the IOA

which kept tainted officials out of its elections. Newly-elected IOA president N. Ramachandran told IANS from Chennai that he was delighted. “I am extremely delighted that the IOC has lifted the ban. Now we have to work together to keep the IOA clean,” Ramachandran told IANS. The Executive Board took the decision following a report submitted by a three-member delegation, headed by Robin Mitchell,

who were the observers at the IOA General Assembly here Sunday. The IOC observers told the Executive Board members that the elections were held in full respect of the recently passed NOC (National

Pietsersen was first sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for `90 million but Daredevils used the Right to Match (RTM) card to buy him back. DID DHONI, SRINIVASAN misrepresent facts to Mudgal? NEW DELHI: Serious doubts are being raised over the deposition of Indian cricket board president Narayanswami Srinivasan, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the India Cements management that Gurunath Meiyappan was not a team principal, only a cricket enthusiast with Chennai Super Kings, in a report submitted to the apex court. Retired Judge Mukul Mudgal in his report to the Supreme Court Monday said that Dhoni, Srinivasan and his company India Cements took the stand during the inquiry of the betting and the spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of Srinivasan, had nothing do with the cricketing affairs of Chennai Super

Kings. But in his due course of the probe, Mudgal found out that Meiyappan made it out to the world that he was indeed the team principal of Chennai Super Kings. Mudgal in his report has indicted Meiyappan of being involved in the betting scandal in the IPL. “Representatives of India Cements, who appeared before the Committee, contended that Mr. Meiyappan had no share holding in India Cements and hence cannot be considered as an owner of CSK (Chennai Super Kings). Further, Mr. M.S. Dhoni, Mr. N. Srinivasan and officials of India Cements took the stand that Mr. Meiyappan, had nothing to do with the cricketing affairs of Chennai Super Kings and was a mere cricket enthusiast supporting CSK.” Gurunath Meiyappan

major offshoot of India unexpectedly winning the 1983 World Cup was that the Indian board was emboldened enough to take on the might of England and Australia and end their hegemony over world cricket once and for all. Though it took another 28 years for it to win the World Cup a second time, by now India had changed the dynamics of world cricket to become a big bully. The current Indian board presi-

dent Narayanaswamy Srinivasan, unlike his predecessors, smartly got England and Wales Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia (CA) to form a troika to gain control of interna-

tional cricket, browbeating the other ICC member nations to fall in line. For some strange reasons, Sri Lanka and Pakistan decided to oppose the Big Brother.

India thus now has an inviolable veto — which in any case it has been exercising for almost a decade by refusing to accept the Decision Review System (DRS) or arranging and scrapping tours to reduce the Future Tours Programme (FTP) to a mockery. Under the new dispensation there will be no FTP, it will all be bilateral arrangements. The three boards will now decide what is good for other players in the ICC. India contributes 80 percent of the ICC revenue and holds the whip in deciding on tours.

Juhi keen to work with Salman

I’ve not gone under the knife: Anushka MUMBAI: Actress Anushka Sharma, who is being talked about for her fuller lips, denies going under the knife for the new look. She attributes her changed looks to a temporary lip enhancing tool for her role in the upcoming movie Bombay Velvet. The speculation started after Anushka, who made her Bollywood debut with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, appeared on Koffee With Karan. The 25-year-old took to microblogging website Twitter to deny reports of having undergone cosmetic surgery. “...Lately there has been a lot of talk about me in this particular episode of ‘Koffee with Karan’. Mainly regarding my lips. I am here to just convey what I have to say regarding the same. I am talking about it only because this story has taken a scary direction and things have been ‘blown out of proportion’ (pun intended),” Anushka tweeted Monday night. “For a short while now, I have been using a temporary lip enhancing tool and that along with makeup techniques (I have learnt over the years) is the reason why there might be a change in the appearance of my lips. “...Let me assure everyone that I have by no means gone ‘under the knife’ or done any kind of ‘plastic surgery’ or undergone any intrusive procedure.”

Armaan’s V Day plans go haywire MUMBAI: There were reports that Armaan Kohli and Tanishaa would be traveling to an exotic location to celebrate Valentine’s Day. But the plan stands cancelled reportedly due to Armaan’s injuries.

“Tanishaa and I were to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Greece, but because of my knee injury and back pain, we thought it would be better to cancel the plan and go later when I feel a little better,” Armaan was quoted as saying. “We have cancelled our hotel reservations, tickets, etc. It’s very disappointing and unfortunate since we were looking forward to it, but it’s not the end of the world. There’s always a next time.” The couple will now celebrate the day in Mumbai. “We will definitely spend the day together. When two people love each other and it’s Valentine’s Day, there are bound to be gifts, but that’s a surprise,” he said.

MUMBAI: Actress Juhi Chawla, who has worked with stars like Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in her prime, hopes that someday she is paired with Salman Khan in a movie. “I hope I get to work with Salman...he will not work with me because he hasn’t in all these years,” Juhi told IANS as she laughed. “I don’t see that happening. But I never thought I will be working with Madhuri (Dixit)... so you never know. I would love to do anything which is justified on papers,” she added. Juhi and Madhuri are working together for the first time in Gulaab Gang.

Preity Zinta under debt? MUMBAI: Actress-turned-businesswoman Preity Zinta has rubbished reports suggesting that she is looking to “lease out” her flat in Khar locality here to pay off her debts saying “it’s thousand percent untrue”. “By the grace of god, I’m most comfortably able to look after myself financially. It is not only untrue it’s extremely irritating to read

No escape from dance for Ajay

such fabrications about oneself,” added the actress of hits like Dil Chahta Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho. “There is so much drama in that story. ‘Bechari’ (poor) Preity. She has to vacate her ‘mahal’ (palace) and live in a ‘jhopdi’ (shanty) because the cruel creditors are breaking down her door. I wish people would look for their afternoon soap opera scripts somewhere else.”

Want to overcome my fears: Karanvir

MUMBAI: Actor-producer Ajay Devgn, who shies away from dancing, says he couldn’t escape Action Jackson director Prabhudheva, who made him shake a leg in two songs. “Prabhu made me work really hard for the film. He made me dance, which I generally run away from,” Ajay told IANS. “I have shot for two songs. We have total five songs in the film and the rest are yet to be shot and I don’t know how am I going to do them,” added the 44-year-old. In the film, Ajay has teamed up with Sonakshi Sinha. However, when asked about his role in Action Jackson, he refused to divulge details.

Asin works only with superstars? MUMBAI: There is this impression that Asin, who made a Bollywood debut opposite Aamir Khan in Ghajini, works only with big names in Bollywood. However, she rubbishes the claims. “It is a wrong interpretation. I am happy that I have got to work with established actors. But apart from them I am open to do films with anyone. The script should be good enough,” said Asin, who went on to work with Salman Khan in Ready post her debut with Aamir.

NEW DELHI: Actor Karanvir Bohra, known for portraying different shades in shows like Shararat, Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Dil Se Di Dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava?, has joined actionadventure show to rid himself of fears. The 31-year-old, who made his small-screen debut with Just Mohabbat in 1999, alongwith his actresswife Teejay Sidhu is participating in the fifth season of Khatron Ke Khiladi. Asked what made him say yes to the show, Karanvir said: “Because the show is exciting, adventurous and wild. I want to overcome my fears with the help of the show.” What are your fears? “I am scared of heights and performing under pressure. But I want to participate in the show without the fear of losing or winning the show,” he said. The show will air on Colors.

‘There is more to beauty than looks’

A woman should have an identity beyond just the way she looks, feels actor Katrina Kaif ANJURI NAYAR, NEW DELHI

R

ohit Shetty, one of the most successful directors of Bollywood and known for working with stars like Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan, says he will consider new faces when he will find the combination of a right script and fitting budget. Be it her flawless skin or well worked-out body, Katrina Kaif has always been known for her beauty. But the actress feels “there is more to beauty than just the physical appearance”. “I feel it is important not to get overly obsessed and overly carried away with just the physical aspect. There is more to beauty than just the physical appearance. You are also a complete person and a woman should have an identity beyond just the way she looks,” Katrina told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai. Media appearances and film shoots are regular in the actress' life, which require her to look perfect at all times. This can be “tough”, said Katrina.”It is tough in a way. You are a human being at the end of the day and everyone has his or her good days and bad days,” she said. Hair and make-up can be challenging for the actress, but the people who she works with often make

the “time consuming” job into fun. “I think the hardest thing is the hours spent in hair and make-up every day. It is time-consuming, but it can be fun when you are working with a new team,” said the 30year-old. She also says that keeping skin healthy and hair shiny is a tough job. You have to “keep at it”, says the actress, even doling out tips for this purpose. “Start with a good diet and healthy food. This is important for the body. You need to see that the products that you use are of the best quality...you have to make sure you are protecting your skin with a sun screen, using good shampoo and conditioner on your hair because

that is something that we don't take seriously,” said Katrina, who recently launched hair care range “6 Oil Nourish Hair care” by beauty brand L'Oréal Paris. The five must-haves in her daily routine are also equally practical and easy to follow. “Sun block, lip balm, a good shampoo and conditioner and a leave-in serum after you wash your hair, to apply,” she said.

Hrithik pulls out of ‘Shuddhi’ IANS, MUMBAI

A

ctor Hrithik Roshan will not be part of Karan Malhotra’s Shuddhi. However, he says he has decided to unite with the filmmaker for another film. “Karan Malhotra and I have decided to unite in the most ambitious way post Shuddhi. For now, I cannot allow a vision like Shuddhi to stagnate any further,” the 40year-old said in an official statement. The two have worked together

in Agneepath, a remake of the 1990 film of the same name, which was produced under Karan Johar’s banner Dharma Productions, which is now producing Shuddhi. It’s is believed that he has quit the film for health reasons. Hrithik has wished both the filmmakers success for the upcoming movie and hopes that it will be a “landmark” in the Indian cinema. “I had the finest experience an actor can have while working with Karan in Agneepath and I’m sure both my dear Karans (Malhotra and Johar) will go beyond with that one. Shuddhi remains a part of me in spirit and (I) am sure it will be a landmark in our cinema. I wish them all the best,” the actor said in the statement. Shuddhi was supposed to feature Hrithik and actress Kareena Kapoor.

‘Total Siyappa’ awaited in Pak

NEW DELHI: Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar says people in his home country are waiting for his next Bollywood film “Total Siyappa” and if things go as planned then the film will be premiered in Pakistan. “People in Pakistan are loving the promo of 'Total Siyappa', (and) they are waiting for its release. If everything goes

well, then we will have a big premiere of the film in Pakistan,” the 33-year-old said here at the Zee Cine awards. He also plans to invite for the premiere cricketer Shahid Afridi, whom he mockingly mentions in one of the dialogue in the film. “We will also invite Shahid Afridi for the premiere and if he comes, he will enjoy the context of that particular dialogue about him,” said Ali. The dialogue mentions Afridi in a funny way and it also created quite a stir when the promos of the movie came out. Directed by E. Niwas, “Total Siyappa” also stars Yami Gautam, Kirron Kher and Anupam Kher. It hits theatres March 7.

‘Heartless’— stylish career relaunch for Adhyayan Suman Film: Heartless; Cast: Adhyayan Suman, Ariana Ayam, Deepti Naval, Om Puri; Director: Shekhar Suman; Rating: ***

Y

ou really can’t put a good man down. Even when his heart breaks he bounces back stronger than before. So it is believed. But watching actor-turned-director Shekhar Suman’s directorial debut I am not too sure. His vulnerable ailing protagonist Aditya (played by the director’s son Adhyayan) goes through a series of life-changing knife-in-the-heart experiences that leave him disenchanted and shattered. Heartless is no ordinary coming-of-age story. It tells the powerful if illogical story of a young heir whose urgent need for a heart transplant puts him in an incredible medical and emotional crisis. The screenplay by Nina Arora weaves the story of love and betrayal into a tenable if somewhat far-

fetched medical condition known as anesthetic awareness. The first half when the romance between the weak-hearted Addy and the girl at the hotel reception (newcomer Ariana Ayam, treacherously sweet and adequate) unfolds has a zipped up classy quality to it. The courtship is cluttered with unwanted songs. And just this once, they are excusable. How can we have a modern day Devdas without the music flowing in his veins? Adhyayan Suman makes a confident comeback in the authorbacked role. His eyes are filled with a pain that seems more existential than physical. He brings to his borderline-ludicrous character a sense of bridled tragedy and a stifled desperation evident in his breathless

Adhyayan’s scenes with his screen mom Deepti Naval ring true even when they go from the real to the surreal to the other worldly

speech and anguished body language. He plays a life threatened with annihilation, stopping itself from falling apart in the nick of time. Adhyayan’s scenes with his screen mom Deepti Naval ring true even when they go from the real to the surreal to the other worldly. While Adhyayan’s character remains on its feet, the film works effectively and cogently. Once he is horizontal on the operation table the narrative suffers a rush of woozy incredulity requiring herculean amounts of suspension of belief from the audience. But all said and done Heartless works within its ambitious realm of love, betrayal and mortality. It makes an endearing departure from routine romances about broken hearts. — Subhash K. Jha

HICAGO — Taxi companies and drivers have sued the city, saying rival services like Uber undercut their business while not complying with city laws. Attorney Michael Shakman filed the federal suit in US District Court on behalf of taxi firms, including Yellow Cab and taxi drivers such as Francis Koblah, a day after the City Council received competing proposals on the burgeoning ride-sharing industry. The suit accuses the city of not enforcing its own laws on taxi services and says rivals like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar are undercutting the conventional cab industry as they are not compelled to operate under the same rules. According to Shakman, the city is “discriminating against taxi owners” by sanctioning “unregulated companies providing identical services.” He accused the city of “really shooting yourself in the foot” by allowing unregulated taxis alongside heavily regulated and revenuegenerating taxis. “The Emanuel administration has tolerated an unlawful taxi caste system created by Uber, Lyft and Sidecar,” Shakman added. The suit claims breach of contract and demands that the city enforce its own laws while seeking damages.

‘Remaking a hit film quite tough’ Adopting a remake to local sensibilities is a challenge, says filmmaker Kammula

ANS, CHENNAI

F

ilmmaker Sekhar Kammula, who has remade Hindi blockbuster Kahaani in Telugu as Anaamika, says it is always challenging to remake a hit film in any language as it requires adapting to local sensibilities. “When you’re doing a frame-to-frame copy then a remake might be easy to execute but adapting a remake to local sensibilities is always a challenge, irrespective of the language it is being made in. ‘Anaamika’ is not a frame-to-frame copy of the original, it has been adapted to suit the local flavour,” Kammula told IANS. Nayanthara reprises the role of Vidya Balan in Anaamika, which was shot in Hyderabad. “The film is made in such a way that for all those who haven’t watched the original, it will appear as a different film. All those who have watched Kahaani will also connect with ‘Anaamika’ as it is made keeping in mind the local sensibilities,” he said. “I have made changes to ensure the audiences feel that the film is different from the original in many ways,” he added. While Vidya Balan played a pregnant woman in search of her missing husband in the original, Nayanthara will not be playing a pregnant character in Anaamika. “The film’s premise is about the protagonist’s search for her missing husband. I didn’t find the need to retain the pregnant part because my film is not a frame-to-frame copy. Nayanthara still had to work hard in her role because she doesn’t get to earn any sympathy for being pregnant,” added Kammula. The film, produced by Endemol India, also features Harshvardhan Rane.

Tamil version of ‘Lucia’ goes on floors CHENNAI: The yet-to-be-titled Tamil remake of critically acclaimed Kannada blockbuster Lucia was launched here on February 10, while the shooting of the remake, which features Siddharth in the lead, started from the next day. “We officially launched the film on February 10. The regular shooting starts from today and we plan to complete the film in one long schedule,” C.V Kumar, who will produce the film under his home banner Thirukumaran Entertainment, told IANS. Lucia was an independent film that was crowd-funded. It turned out to be

one of biggest low-budget hits in southern cinema last year. Debutant Prasad Ramar will helm the remake, which also features Deepa Pranidhi and Naren in important roles.

Another Koothu-P-Pattarai artist enters filmdom CHENNAI: After actors such as Pasupathy, Vimal, Vijay Sethupathi and Vidharth from renowned Tamil drama troupe Koothu-P-Pattarai joined Tamil cinema, the next entrant to the industry from the group is Sri Balaji. Sri will make his cinematic debut with forthcoming Tamil romantic-thriller Soorayaadal. “We were on the lookout for a newcomer and that’s when someone had told me about the theatre group. I happen to meet Sri there and was really impressed with his passion for cinema.

I didn’t do any screen test for him as I strongly believed that his theatre experience was enough,” film’s director Thamarai Kannan. Kannan has a lot of respect for the theatre group. “The fact that so many wonderful actors have come from this group explains its importance. It makes us understand that this place produces some of the finest artists and working with them will be every director’s delight. I have immense respect for the group,” he said.

Rajinikanth lauds ‘Goli Soda’ IANS, CHENNAI

A

fter impressing audiences and critics alike, recent Tamil hit Goli Soda has earned the appreciation of superstar Rajinikanth, who praised its makers for making an “astonishing” film with children. S.D. Vijay Milton directed the coming-of-age film about four children from Koyambedu mar-

N. Lingusamy, producer of “Goli Soda”, is on a high after receiving praise from Rajinikanth. “He congratulate me for backing an offbeat film. It was a proud moment for me as well as my production company. We spoke (on phone) for nearly an hour and he said that he has watched all the films made under our banner,” Lingusamy told IANS

‘I’m astonished how the film was made in a place like Koyambedu market, especially making those kids perform so well. I called up the director and congratulated him’ ket in the city. “I’m astonished how the film was made in a place like Koyambedu market, especially making those kids perform so well. I called up the director and congratulated him for the good work. I also wished him luck for his next venture,” Rajinikanth said in a statement.

In the past, his banner Thirrupathi Brothers’ has made films such as Kumki and Vazhakku En 18/9. A low-budget film, Goli Soda, which released Jan 24, has emerged as the first Tamil hit of the year. It collected over `80 million in the first week in Tamil Nadu.

Personal grooming

important on V Day

Seventy percent of people think grooming oneself is absolutely essential, reveals a survey amongst 3,000 people

Try some homemade recipes to stay fit

IANS, NEW DELHI

W

ith Valentine’s Day around the corner, personal grooming becomes a very important task for people who plan on celebrating the occasion, says a survey conducted by one of the leading matrimonial site. According to a survey by Jeevansathi.com amongst 3,000 people, 70 percent of people think grooming oneself is absolutely essential. The survey also says that 70 percent of people spend more than Rs.500 on themselves for the day, said a statement. In all, 53 percent of the total people who took the survey said their partners’ looks matter to them a lot on Valentine’s Day while 47 percent of them indicated that they are comfortable with what their partner wears on that day. Valentine’s Day is a working day but 62 percent of the men in the survey admitted to taking the day off, while 45 percent of women have decided to take the day off. “Valentine’s day has become an important part of our social fabric with people celebrating it fervently every year. It has finally gained a status of a festival with people taking a day off to spend time with their beloved ones,” said Prakash Sangam, business head of Jeevansathi.com. “It is even more interesting to note that the percentage of males taking leave on Valentine’s Day is more than their female counterparts,” he added. The day also requires a lot of planning and 47 percent of the people said they don’t plan at all for the Valentine’s Day while 24 percent of them said that they start preparing a week or two in advance. When asked about how much money they are spending on gifts, 46 percent of the people indicated they are buying presents in the range of `500-`3,000.

Easy-to-fall-for skin myths busted IANS, LONDON

T

here are many misconceptions related to skincare like wearing sunscreen everyday is too heavy or exfoliating regularly will ensure a clear skin. So it’s time to move away from such myths and get ready for a flawless skin. Here are some of the myths attached to skincare busted by experts at Proactiv brand, reports femalefirst.co.uk: Myth 1: Wearing sunscreen daily is too heavy for my oily complexion. Truth: To prevent damage or to help avoid a blemish outbreak, protecting your skin with a sunscreen should be part of your daily skincare routine. If you suffer with oily skin, try a lightweight formula underneath your make-up, or find a foun-

dation or tinted moisturiser with an SPF built in. Myth 2: To prevent blemishes you should completely strip away the oil from the skin. Truth: While there is no doubt that oily skin should be controlled to keep the complexion clear and shine-free, completely stripping the skin of all its natural oils can play even more havoc with blem-

ishes and spots. Myth 3: I should exfoliate regularly to ensure my skin stays clear. Truth: Exfoliating excessively can strip the skin of essentials oils and spread bacteria. Instead of a daily scrub opt for a much gentler exfoliant to keep your skin in a good condition. Myth 4: You shouldn’t use moisturiser on oily skin. Truth: Blemish-prone skin needs hydration too. In fact, drying out oily skin sends a signal to your body to produce even more oil; a nightmare for those who already suffer with problem skin. Myth 5: The only thing that will cure my eyes bags and dark circles is more sleep. Truth: A diet high in salt may also be the cause of bags under your eyes.

n Pressure cook the tomatoes with the roughly chopped onion, green chilli, garlic, cinnamon stick and two cups of water till two whistles. Remove and keep aside to cool. When cool, blend the mixture in a blender. Remove and strain. n Heat the oil in a heavy bottomed pan; add the finely chopped onion and fry till golden broen. Add the curry leaves and pour in the tomato soup. n Serve hot seasoned with crushed black pepper and salt.

n midlife women with HIV, anxiety stands out as having the greatest impact on thinking skills, shows new research. HIV infection is associated with modest deficits in multiple domains of cognitive function, even in women who regularly take their HIV medications. Anxiety particularly affects verbal

learning skills so treating anxiety HIV-infected and 278 HIV-uninmay be key to improving the lives fected midlife women. New insights in diabetes

Trust your spouse for better health

IANS, LONDON

I

n a breakthrough, scientists have identified seven new genetic regions associated with type 2 diabetes. The genome-wide association study looked at more than 3 million DNA variants to identify those that have a measurable impact on risk of type 2 diabetes. By combining DNA data from many several individuals, scientists were able to detect, for the first time, regions where the effects on diabetes susceptibility are rather

subtle. “Although the genetic effects may be small, each signal tells us something new about the biology of the disease,” said Anubha Mahajan of Oxford University. These findings may lead us to new ways of thinking about the disease, with the aim ultimately of developing novel therapies to treat and prevent diabetes, she added.

NEW YORK: Matters of the heart can actually influence your cardiovascular health, reveals research. A study from the University of Utah shows that the ways in which your spouse is supportive —- and how you support your spouse — can actually have significant bearing on your overall heart health. When both partners perceive the support they get from each other as ambivalent — that is, sometimes helpful and sometimes upsetting - each partner’s levels of coronary artery calcification (CAC) tend to be particularly high, said the findings. “There is a large body of epidemiological research suggesting that our

relationships are predictors of mortality rates, especially from cardiovascular disease,” explains Bert Uchino, psychological scientist at University of Utah. “But most prior work has ignored the fact that many relationships are characterised by both positive and negative aspects — in other words, ambivalence,” he added. Uchino and his colleagues Timothy Smith and Cynthia Berg explored how this complexity in relationships predicts cardiovascular health.

Your week ahead... Aries Just when you thought you were proceeding towards a decision about your dark secret or invisible role, the process stops. The strange thing about your situation is, nothing will actually be concluded until late March.

Taurus I see escalating chaos. It’s like walking through marshmallow while someone blows bubbles in your face. And whose fault is this? Not yours – all you did was deal with the friendship or the group that fate gave you.

Gemini Gemini, some aspect of your career (or other leading role in life) has become utterly confusing and confused. The British expression for this is ‘clear as mud’ which just about sums the situation up.

Cancer You now know just how utterly chaotic some corner of your life as a traveler, publisher, writer, teacher or student has become. What came to light last week has shown you how much cleaning up you have to do.

Leo You don’t have this many horoscope factors in the confusing sign of Pisces and get away with it for long. What you now know about your money, business, house, flat, possessions or charity has come as a revelation.

Virgo You appear to have wandered into the equivalent of thick fog with your former, current or potential partner. If the issue for you at the moment is not your ex, current or possible lover, it is most certainly about your enemy or rival.

(August1-7) Libra It is easy to understand why you want to sort out your daily workload, your regular lifestyle and your relationship with your body. During 2013 this zone of your horoscope was occupied by Neptune, Salacia and Chiron.

Scorpio What took place last year with your son, daughter, godchild or young relative now appears to have been even more confused than you imagined. In fact, what happened last week probably pulled you up short.

Sagittarius Hope you have been reading this column long enough to have been warned (back in January) about the forthcoming situation with your internet-based plans or your communication-heavy project.

Capricorn You will be so much better off, financially, in the second half of 2014 and first half of 2015 that you can almost shrug off the situation with your money, house, possessions, apartment, business or charity near Friday.

Aquarius Your backwards glance at 2013 last week revealed just how confused one person had been, in respect of the money, business, house, charity, possessions or apartment.

Pisces You now appear to be fully updated on all the ‘me’ issues hanging over from 2013 that you were not aware of before. In astrology, any time you get a stellium passing through Pisces you also have image or appearance questions to answer.
