illary Clinton and Donald Trump shook hands after ending the nastiest US presidential debate, with CNN indicating the Republican lost with only 34 per cent votes to Clinton’s 57.

As the Democrat tried to pin down Trump over his video remarks about groping women, Trump launched a blistering attack against Clinton and her husband during the bitter night debate in Washington University.

Unlike the first debate, there was no sign of cordiality between the two as they entered the arena with former President and the Democrat’s husband Bill Clinton and the Republican’s wife Melania Trump already seated with their extended families.

The first question was from a teacher in the audience who asked if the two candidates were modelling appropriate behavior for American children.

Clinton promised to work “with every American” and to be “the president for all Americans”. A cautious Trump said she agreed “with everything she said”.

The explosion came soon after CNN’s Anderson Cooper questioned Trump about the 2005 video leaked by the Washington Post. “You bragged you sexually assaulted women — do you understand that?”

Trump tried his best to defend his lewd comments. “No that’s not what I said. This was locker room talk. I am not proud of it.”

He then turned to terrorism and “bad things happening” in the world. The video leaked sparked a dramatic rebuke of the billionaire, with dozens of Republican leaders saying he should step aside and let his running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, lead the GOP ticket. Clinton said Trump “was not fit to be president and commander in chief”.

“We’ve seen him rate women on their appearance, ranking them from one to 10... It’s not only women, it’s not only this video...

This is who Donald Trump is.”

Trump then accused Bill Clinton of doing much worse than just talking about sexual assault and targeted Hillary Clinton of harassing a rape victim.

Trump slams Republican Party WASHINGTON: Presidential nominee Donald Trump slammed the Republican Party as leaders continued to distance themselves after his leaked lewd comments on women. He particularly trashed House Speaker Paul Ryan, saying he did not care about his support.

“I don’t want his (Paul Ryan) support,” Trump said in an interview to Fox News.

“I don’t care about his support.

What I want to do is I want to win for the people,” Trump added.

The Republican accused her of starting the birther claim and asked her to apologize to President Barack Obama. He also mentioned WikiLeaks’ disclosures of internal emails from Democrats.

Trump appeared hassled by the fact that his rival was getting more time to respond and that the moderators were not bringing up issues related to Clinton.

At one point, Trump insisted that Clinton answer the question about healthcare. He insisted that the Affordable Care Act was too expensive and vowed to repeal it.

Asked by a young woman in the audience about Muslims in the US being targeted, Trump said: “She won’t say the name, and Obama won’t say the name, but the name is there: ‘Radical Islamic terror’.”

On his proposal to ban entry of Muslims into the US, the Republican said: “I don’t want to have hundreds of thousands of people coming in from Syria when we know nothing about their values, their love for our country.”

Clinton called out Trump for denying his support for the war in Iraq. Trump interrupted and said he was always against the war in Iraq.

“I don’t like Assad at all but Assad is killing IS. Russia is killing ISIS. And Iran is killing ISIS. And those three have now lined up because of our weak foreign policy.”

When Cooper pressed Trump about his early hours Twitter rant against former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, the billionaire deflected and began talking about Clinton and Libya.

He brought up the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Libya, saying Clinton ignored multiple requests for more security from the US ambassador who was killed.

BRIEFS Socialite Parmeshwar Godrej passes away MUMBAI: Well known Indian socialite and philanthropist Parmeshwar Godrej, wife of Godrej Group Chairman Adi Godrej, passed away in a private hospital here.

She breathed her last late on Monday night at the Breach Candy Hospital where she was admitted recently for treatment of some lung ailments, but details are not available. She was 71 and is survived by her husband Adi Godrej and their three children, Nisaba Godrej, Pirojsha and Tanya Dubash.

Two terrorists killed as Kashmir operation ends three-day battle between security forces and terrorists holed up in a government building near here ended on Wednesday with the death of two militants, the army announced.

General Officer Commanding Ashok Narula said the military operation, which began on Monday morning, was done in a manner that there would be no collateral damage. “Two terrorists have been eliminated and two weapons recovered.

We will give details of other articles recovered later,” Narula told the media.

“We did not want any collateral damage. So it took us time. There are 60 rooms in the building. That is the reason it took time to clear every room,” he said.

Major credit of surgical strike goes to PM: Parrikar MUMBAI: Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday said a major share of the credit for the surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The major share goes to the Prime Minister,” Parrikar said while addressing a gathering at the Materials Engineering Technology conference.

“But... I will at least claim (that) the credit is decision-making ability and planning. So that should settle the nerves of many people,” he said in an apparent dig at those accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of seeking to reap political benefit from the cross-LoC strikes.

Parrikar pointed out that the September 29 operation was carried out by the Indian Army and not a political party.

The Defense Minister said he does not mind sharing credit for the army’s work, including the surgical strikes to destroy the terror “launch pads”, with every citizen of the country.

“Because it was done by the army, not any political party. So all Indians, including doubting Thomases, can share the credit,” Parrikar said, referring to people who have questioned the strikes and demanded proof that they were conducted.

A war of words erupted over the politicization of the strike with the opposition accusing the government of seeking to capitalize on the Indian Army’s action for electoral gains.

The surgical strike came in the wake of the terror attack at an army camp in Uri town of Kashmir on September 18.

ce gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the women’s vault event at the Rio Olympics, has been placed in a tricky situation over a BMW car presented to her by the Hyderabad District Badminton Association.

Dipa, along with India’s two other medallists from Rio — badminton star P.V. Sindhu and wrestler Sakshi Malik — and Sindhu’s coach Pullela Gopichand, received a BMW car in August for her achievement at the Rio Olympics.

Dipa, however, strongly refuted media reports that she wants to return the BMW car to Hyderabad District Badminton Association President V. Chamundeshwarnath who gifted her the BMW. The star gymnast insisted that her decision to return the premier vehicle is only due to maintenance problems that she envisaged facing in her north-eastern state of Tripura.

ISLAMABAD: A leading Pakistani newspaper on Wednesday said it stood by its story that exposed a divide between the country’s civilian and military leadership over terrorists.

A Dawn editorial also urged the government to immediately remove the name of Cyril Almeida, who wrote the story, from the Exit Control List (ECL), which prevents him from travelling abroad.

“The fallout of (our) story has been intense,” the editorial said.

ment on Wednesday.

“During her visit, the State Counselor will call on President of India Pranab Mukherjee and have meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj,” it stated.

Suu Kyi will also attend a business event during which she will interact with leading Indian business leaders on ways of bolstering bilateral economic and commercial relations.

“The visit of the State Counselor will provide an opportunity for the

The award was presented to Sehgal, who has committed most of his wealth to philanthropy in India, at the third annual American Bazaar Philanthropy Dialogue and Dinner here last week.

An Indian American community and business portal, the Bazaar also organizes a number of signature conferences in the US and India.

Sehgal holds a PhD in Plant Genetics from Harvard University and a diploma in business management from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Edda, allocated most of the money they received after selling their Indiabased Proagro Group of companies to the foundation.

Sehgal is the former president of the Des Moines, IA, -based Pioneer Overseas Corporation and vice president Pioneer Hi-Bred International.

Speaking after the concert, Khan said: “We three — my two sons and I — performed while it was drizzling. We dedicated our concert to world peace and harmony.

Khan and his sons began the historical Chant4Change concert with an inspirational number.

soon realizes the value of peace and harmony.

“Collectively, we must give our younger generations a peaceful and harmonious world. Our family feels very sad when we hear about young soldiers dying in the war, no matter which country. We feel connected with every soul, every religion and every song of the world,” Khan said.

Explaining how music can unify people across the world, he said: “People of the world have to think about the value of togetherness, peace and harmony. Collectively, people of India and the world have to create a peaceful and harmonious environment for our children and younger generation.

“India was one before the Partition. That is why even today, it’s Indian classical music that unifies the two countres and their people.

We could only divide the land, but could not divide the music.”

He is also worried about the rampancy of terror attacks even in the US. “The US should not encourage people to openly buy weapons, especially for the younger generation, as it is very dangerous not to have licence for the weapons. The greatest mockery is that every political leader talks of peace and harmony, and at the same time

Completing a 3-0 clean sweep in the series, India have now stamped their authority and clinched the No. 1 International Cricket Council (ICC) Test ranking from Pakistan. They had already bagged the top spot after winning the second Test.

Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin once again single-handedly triggered another batting collapse of the Kiwis, to return with career-best figures of 7/59 in the visitors’ second innings, bundling them out for a paltry 153 in response to the mammoth target of 475.

BCCI calls for SGM on Saturday: Report NEW DELHI: Under pressure from the Supreme Court to implement the Justice R.M. Lodha panel recommendations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) on Saturday here to discuss the interim order passed by the apex court last week.

The court had ordered the board and state associations to respond by October 17 whether they would “unconditionally” comply with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations.

According to a report in espncricinfo, this week’s SGM is the second such emergent meeting called by the BCCI in the last two weeks after the October 1 SGM, where a defiant BCCI board agreed to adopt some of the recommendations.

Infuriated by the BCCI’s decision, the three-judge bench warned the board to stop issuing funds to errant

state associations which did not implement the recommendations.

According to the statement, Governor Ch.Vidyasagar Rao has, under Clause (3) of the Constitution’s Article 166, allocated the subjects hitherto dealt with by Jayalalithaa to Panneerselvam on her advice.

Jayalalithaa held the portfolios of Public, Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service, General Administration, District Revenue Officers, Police and Home.

Panneerselvam will also preside over the cabinet meetings.

Panneerselvam has earlier served as Chief Minister when Jayalalithaa had to step down in wake of her conviction in a corruption by a Bengaluru court. She had returned to the post after the Karnataka High Court acquitted her.

Reacting to the development, Congress’ state unit president S.Thirunavukkarasar told IANS that it “is a welcome development for the continued functioning of the government”.

He said the situation is similar to the one that existed when AIADMK founder, the late M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) was admitted to the same Apollo Hospitals in October 1984.

‘Jayalalithaa may be discharged soon’ CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa is likely to be discharged soon from hospital, Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam said.

Kerala to probe reports of fake Chinese eggs IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

ith “artificial” Chinese eggs reportedly making their way into certain parts of Kerala, state Health Minister K.K. Shylaja this week said a probe would be launched to find out the truth.

Speaking to the media, Shylaja said she has not received any complaints on this score, but she will examine the media reports and

find out whether such a product has made its way into the state.

“I will now ask the Food Safety Commissioner to seriously look

into these media reports that such a product is avaliable. It would be nice if someone comes up and provides a sample of it so the tests can be conducted quickly,” said Shylaja.

Reports have recently surfaced that these “artificial” eggs were coming into the state from Tamil Nadu.

According to the reports, Idukki district of Kerala which is bordering Tamil Nadu is the place where this product is available.

Idukki district Medical Officer Rekha also told the media that in the wake of reports on the eggs, she too will probe the matter.

“Artificial eggs”, reports say, unlike normal eggs are brown in color and if kept in the open after cracking them, flies and other insects are not attracted to them.

The eggs do not spoil or rot even after cooking or leaving them out in the open, according to reports.

Two dead, four trapped in Bengaluru building debris IANS, BENGALURU

wo persons have died and at least four are still trapped under the debris of an under-construction multistorey residential building that crashed in the city’s south-eastern suburb, police said.

“Two bodies have been taken out of the debris and efforts are on to rescue another four persons trapped in the heap of construction material at the accident site,” Bengaluru Additional Police Com-

missioner P. Harikrishnan told reporters here.

Of the two deceased, one was a security guard.

The fire brigade personnel were able to rescue about 10 people, including workers from the accident site, within an hour after the building collapsed around 2 pm.

“The fifth and sixth floors were under construction when the pillars and columns of the building on the floors above the ground gave way under the weight of the building material,” said a fire

n an obvious reference to Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Dusshera on October 11 said the time had come to uproot terror and those who patronize the terrorists.

Addressing a massive Dussehra gathering at the Aishbagh Ram Leela ground, Modi said terrorism in all forms was anti-humanity and Hindu Lord Rama represented all that was human.

It was the Prime Minister’s first public speech after the September 29 surgical strikes by the Indian Army at terror launch pads in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

He made no direct reference to the surgical strikes or to Pakistan that killed an unspecified number of terrorists but made it more than clear which country he had in mind. “Those who spread terrorism need to be annihilated and those who aid terrorism will not be spared either,” Modi said in a speech laced with references to Hindu religion.

Durga puja festivities come to an end IANS, KOLKATA

eary-eyed devotees bade an emotional farewell, as idols of goddess Durga and her children were immersed on Tuesday in lakes, and rivers and ponds of West Bengal on Vijaya Dashami, bringing to an end five days of revelry and celebration associated with eastern India’s biggest festival.

However, as decreed by the state government and the court, idols worshipped in the households or apartment complexes were to be immersed till a deadline of 6 p.m. Four household pujas were given extension till 8.30 p.m.

The Dashami rituals in the morning saw married women preparing the goddess and her children for their long journey back home by smearing the deities and each other with red vermilion.

They also offered sweets to the god, and prayed for the wellbeing of their families and long lives of their husbands while performing these rituals.

My struggle started after my first film

ctress Taapsee Pannu, who is currently riding high on the success of her third Bollywood venture Pink, says she faced a struggle after her first film released. Taapsee, who made her acting debut with the 2010 Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam, made a swift transition to Bollywood in 2013 with the film Chashme Baddoor.

hen you walk into a Sivakarthikeyan film, especially one like Remo, you cannot expect logic; you can’t expect to be bowled over by a great script and you definitely cannot expect to like everything you see in the film.

As a viewer, you’re not pleased with the way stalking is endorsed by the film. Even though you feel sorry for the heroine who is no more than

In Remo, Sivakarthikeyan dons the disguise of a nurse to woo the woman of his dreams. He wins her over by confusing her, by making her believe that she’s making a big mistake by settling for an arranged marriage and that she can still meet her prince charming if she believes.

And when Keerthy is successfully confused, Sivakarthikeyan chips in with a line — it’s easier to confuse a woman than convince her. It’s as though the makers want to prove that if you want to win over a girl, all you need to do is confuse her with lies. Despite these worrying issues, Remo is mostly entertaining.

Early Voting & Registration at 69 W Washington

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL-Early Voting and Registration Services are under way at 69 W. Washington St. through Oct. 9. This site is open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm.

“Registered voters may cast their ballots, and those who need to register or file a name or address change also may do so and cast a ballot during the same visit,” said Chicago Election Board Chairwoman Marisel A. Hernandez.

“Those who need to register or file a

name change or an address change need two forms of ID, at least one of which shows their address. These can include government letters, bank statements, pay

stubs and utility bills.”

From Oct. 10 through Oct. 23, Early Voting will expand to a “Super Site” at 15 W. Washington St., which can house three times as many voting machines.

Then from Oct. 24 through Nov. 7, Early Voting will expand again with a site opening in each Chicago ward. All early voting sites will offer registration services.

Villa Avenue, Villa Park, IL. Over 3,500 devotees, including dozens of distinguished community leaders, generous sponsors, committee members, super donors, and committed Boards of Trustees and volunteers were present at the event.

A gripping exhibition and Darshan of Jyoti Rath in the South Hall were the main attractions of the event which was blessed

by Madhavdasji Maharaj who had travelled all the way from his hometown of Sayla in Gujarat.

Verandah’s developer, AMAN Living LLC president Dr. Anuja Gupta, announced the ground-breaking ceremony and start of construction on October 1.

At least 75 children, unaccompanied minors fleeing poverty, hunger and violence from their homelands in Central America, will be arriving in Illinois from Florida following their emergency evacuation to escape the destruction of Hurricane Matthew.

Hindu Malayalees mark Onam and silver jubilee

BY A STAFF WRITER USTIN, CA -- The Organization of Hindu Malayalees (OHM) celebrated its silver jubilee, along with the ancient Keralite Onam festival and Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti, at the Tustin branch of the Chinmaya Mission Los Angeles (CMLA), Rameshwaram.

A festive atmosphere, the traditional Onam feast, a lighting ceremony, skits, song and dance capped by keynote speeches and votes of thanks by CMLA and OHM representatives heralded the daylong festivals attended by approximately 400 OHM members.

Teenager spelling out success in Scrabble

The international-level Scrabble competitor was ranked among the top 20 competitors at the international GAIL cup in Delhi, India, in July.

“The competitions are intense. Players are timed; psychology comes into play as well as strategy”, she said. “It’s not a typical friendly game of Scrabble”.

Chagti, 18, was named the championship’s best female performer by the Scrabble Association of Delhi.

Scrabble is played on a board, where two to four players use the game’s 100 tiles to form words either across or down the gridded gameboard. The tiles, 98 of which have a single letter with its point total as well as two blanks that can be used for any letter, are used to form words. Less common letters, such as Q and Z, are worth 10 points.

BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- A Houston, Texas attorney, apparently disgruntled by the closure of a law firm he had founded, randomly shot and injured nine people on September 26 morning before he was gunned down by the police.

Nathan Desai is a 46-year-old Indian American resident of Houston.

Standing outside his car and behind a tree, Desai shot at cars and pedestrians until the police arrived at the scene. The suspect continued to shoot as the police attempted to intervene until he was overpowered.

Acting Houston Police Chief Martha Montalvo told reporters that nine people were injured in the shootings.

Three people were not seriously injured and were released after being taken to the hospital, three others were treated and sent home the same day while three others are in serious condition, but are expected to survive, said Montalvo.

No officers were injured in the fracas.

Multiple officers engaged with Desai as he was shooting, while other policemen entered the scene to rescue the wounded.

Desai was dressed in a vintage Nazi uniform with no body armor, and shooting with a semi-automatic .45 caliber handgun.

He was also in possession of a tommy gun.

Both weapons were purchased legally: the handgun was bought in 2005 in Houston, and the tommy gun was purchased in 2009 in College Station, Texas.

More than 2,600 rounds of ammunition were also found in Desai’s car.

Desai, who was licensed to carry guns, because of the nature of his law practice, was raised in Houston and practiced criminal, family, bankruptcy, civil and business law.

Man plays ‘bomb’ prank on train

BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN , NY—The police are investigating after a male passenger made a bomb threat on the L train.

It happened on September 17 around 5:45 pm aboard a northbound L train that left the Bedford Avenue station.

According to the police, the man yelled “bomb!” and then counted down from five and yelled out “boom.”

A passenger took a picture of the suspect with her cellphone before she left the train at the 1st Avenue station.

The prankster is described as being between 30 and 40 years old, 5’10’’ tall and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue pants.

Authorities describe the suspect as a black male around 5 feet 9 inches tall. He was wearing a black jacket and carrying a black shoulder bag.

The tournament included eight to 10 matches, each lasting about 15 minutes.

Competitors from Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and all across India participated.

When she was 12, she joined the International Scrabble Club. In addition to English, she speaks Hindi, Urdu and Sanskrit.

Atif Aslam, Sonu Nigam wow fans in Chicago

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Indian & Pakistani icons Sonu Nigam and Atif Aslam, teamed up for a sold-out show in Chicago, thanks to promoters Sahil & L.A. TAN. The atmosphere outside Sears Centre Arena hours before the show began clearly indicated t that it was going to be a special night. The Indian and Pakistani community came out in full force for a magical night of entertainment.

Atif Aslam and band kicked off the show with a bang through his hit Bollywood numbers like “Doorie Saha Jaaye Na,” “Jeene Lagaa Hoon Pehle Se Zyada,” “Tera Hone Lagaa Hoon, Jabse Mila Hoon,” “O Re Piya,” “Mein Rang Sharbaton Ka,” “Jiya Re Jiya,” and more.

He also performed his Coke Studio hit “Tajdar-e-Haram”. Through his stage presence and exchanges with the crowd, Aslam made it clear his ability as an entertainer goes beyond his vocal mastery.

The crowd went wild when Aslam pulled out the guitar for “Tere Sang Yaara Kush Rang Bahara” and “Karam Kudai Ka”.

Dressed in a kurta and dhoti-style pajama, Sonu Nigam was introduced by Atif Aslam as a ‘Living Legend’. No wonder, as he has done many times in his career before, Sonu Nigam owned the stage. He brought the energy immediately with the patriotic song “Rang De Basanti” as the Indian colors displayed behind him.

The high production values of the show was demonstrated during Sonu’s set. During the climax of one of his hit numbers, he would stop and start the music at the drop of a hat. He sung his popular hits such as “Saathiya” and “Main Hoon Na” while also acknowledging Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar through their classics.

Ekal boosts India’s rural development

BY A STAFF WRITER RNAGE BURG, NY-- Ekal is pulling out all the stops on village development in India and adopting ground-breaking methodology in the way it operates in ruraltribal areas.

Well, that’s the profound message that came out of Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation’s (EVF) just-concluded “International Conference” in Orangeburg, NY. This 3-day conference, meant for national committees of the US, India, Canada and other countries, was convened not only for brain-storming sessions to critically assess the progress made so far, but also to charter EVF’s course for 2017.

SAHARA marks 25 yrs with record fundraiser

BY A STAFF WRITER RVINE, CA – A record $500,000 was raised at the 25th annual gala night of South Asian Helpline and Referral Agency (SAHARA) benefiting Indian American and other South Asian survivors of abuse, held recently at the Irvine Hotel here.

The banner fundraising event, intended to continue helping the organization provide critical services, brought together over 300 supporters who were updated on its efforts while being wined, dined and entertained with a live auction, star-studded video felicitation, speeches and heart-felt stories of victims who moved from crisis to confidence.

Mingling abuse and festivity is no easy task, but unveiling the dark side of humanity only aids SAHARA in advancing its cause, as highlighted by Sona Shah, board vice president and master of ceremonies who kicked off the event by sharing “sobering statistics” on domestic violence and its impact on South Asian victims.

Spotlighting the across-the-board damage survivors of abuse face, board of directors chair Reshma Block and Dr. Rubina Najeeb were at the side of survivors at the podium as they shared written and personal testimonials.

With many of the attendees still in tears, Ami, another survivor, summed up her story of triumph over immigration, lack of housing and a dwindled self-confidence by urging victims to “take the first step; SAHARA will take the other hundred steps for you.”

SAHARA is headquartered in Artesia, Calif., with the thrust to dispense “incredibly agile and innovative services for complexities associated with abuse.

Block said that SAHARA’s team of providers aid nearly 300 to 400 new clients a year, offering domestic abuse programs, transitional living, and case management for seniors, amongst an array of services.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YO R K , N Y - - T h e National Book Foundation has announced that Indian American author Karan Mahajan is among the ten writers who have been named to the Longlist for the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction.

The finalists will be revealed on October 13. Mahajan’s “The Association of Small Bomb” takes the reader to New Delhi, where a community is devastated by the losses brought on by an act of terrorism.

The novel shows the reader both sides of a terrorist attack — how the loss of even just a few lives can change the fates of others and gives the reader a window into how someone might become capable of committing such atrocities.

Mahajan was born in 1984 and grew up in New Delhi, India. His first novel, “Family Planning,” won the Joseph Henry Jackson Award and was a finalist for the International Dylan Thomas Prize. It was published in nine countries.

Mahajan’s writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker Online, The Believer, NPR’s All Things Considered, the San Francisco Chronicle, Granta.com, Bookforum, Tehelka, and the anthology “Stumbling and Raging: More Politically Inspired Fiction.”

He currently lives in Austin, Texas. “The Association of Small Bombs” is his second novel.

Man guns down wife, son, kills himself

BY A STAFF WRITER OLLEGE PARK, MD -- Authorities say a man killed his wife at their Maryland home and then drove to the Washington suburbs, where he killed his 19-year-old son and himself.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office said on September 29 that deputies checking on residents of a Bel Air home on September 28 night found 48-year-old Zarqa Siddique fatally shot. Officials say her husband, 57-year-old Nasir Siddique, was identified as the suspect, but wasn’t home.

Meanwhile, Prince George’s County police say officers called to a parking lot near the University of Maryland campus found Nasir Siddique and his 19-year-old son, Farhad, fatally shot in the father’s vehicle. The police say Nasir Siddique killed his wife, then drove to College Park where he killed Farhad and himself.

Siddique served as a member of the Maryland Governor’s Commission on Military Monuments, Gov. Larry Hogan’s office confirmed. He was appointed in 2012 during the previous administration. He was not slated to be reappointed due to a poor attendance record at meetings, the governor’s office said. New appointments to the commission are scheduled to take place within the next several weeks.

Using a binge-drinking mouse model, the researchers from Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany aimed to determine whether hops in beer is involved in the less damaging effects of acute beer consumption on the liver in comparison with ethanol.

Over the short-term, “our data suggest that hops content in beer is at least in part responsible for the

less damaging effects of beer on the liver,” Live Science quoted the researchers as saying.

The new findings may help

explain why some earlier studies in people suggested that drinking hard liquor is more strongly associated with death from liver disease than

drinking beer, the researchers said.

In the study, female mice were fed beer with hops, a special beer without hops, or plain ethanol (alcohol).

Examination after 12 hours showed that the mice that consumed the beer with hops showed less build-up of fat in their livers than the mice that were given ethanol.

In contrast, the mice that ingested beer without hops had about the same level of fat build-up in their livers as the mice that were fed ethanol, the study, published online in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism, showed.

The new study that hops may lower formation of compounds, that are highly reactive and can cause damage to cells in the liver, Live Science reported.

“We find that copper is essential for breaking down fat cells so that they can be used for energy,” said lead researcher Chris Chang from University of California — Berkeley.

“It acts as a regulator. The more copper there is, the more the fat is broken down,” Chang noted.

“We cannot always be at the top of our game in terms of wisdomrelated tendencies, and it can be dangerous to generalize based on whether people show wisdom in their personal life or when teaching

others in the classroom,” Grossmann noted.

By examining conditions and situations under which people may or may not show wisdom in their lives, researchers and practitioners may learn more about situations promoting wisdom in daily life and recreating those situations.

For the next stage of this work, Grossmann and his team are preparing a tool to assess wisdom according to the situation.
