A
federal court in the United States has passed a ruling revoking the ban on same-sex marriages in Idaho and Nevada a day after the country’s Supreme Court allowed similar rulings in five other states. The three-judge panel unanimously ruled on October 7 that the ban on same-sex marriages in these two states “violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment”.
The panel then proceeded to strike it down, making same-sex marriages legal in Idaho and Nevada. “Idaho and Nevada’s marriage laws, by preventing same-sex couples from marrying and refusing to recognise same-sex marriages celebrated elsewhere, impose profound legal, financial, social and psychic harms on numerous citizens of those states,” said the court statement. With this ruling, Idaho and Nevada join 30 other U.S. states — 11 of them after the

B US varsity creates business school after Mumbai-born alumnus WASHINGTON: Rockford University in Illinois has announced the creation of the Puri Business School (PBS) in recognition of a $5 million contribution to the University by a Mumbai-born Indian-American alumnus. Sunil Puri, first Rockford Group founder and president, immigrated to the U.S. in 1979 to attend what was then called Rockford College, where he graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. The first named school at the University, PBS commemorates Puri’s lifetime commitment to Rockford University, the announcement said. Housed under the University’s College of Social Sciences, Commerce and Education, it will include the Economics, Business and Accounting (EBA) program, along with ancillary business related activities of the University. Puri has also donated a 28,000
square foot building which will serve as the hub for all related PBS programing at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His company owns and manages about 4 million square feet of retail, office and industrial space in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Puri takes pride in the fact that he can give back to the school to which he attributes much of his success, the announcement said. “Sunil’s is a shared vision with the University to establish a school of business that will not only be envied but provide our students with a superior educational experience that prepares them for success,” University President Robert L. Head said. Puri sees PBS not just graduating accountants and business managers; he sees it producing entrepreneurs and business leaders that assist in the economic revival of his region, the announcement said.

First Ebola patient diagnosed in US dies IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he first Ebola patient diagnosed in the US died on October 8 at a hospital in Dallas, a city in the northern part of the US state of Texas, hospital authorities said. “It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7.51 a.m,” Xinhua quoted Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas as saying in a statement.
A day earlier, the hospital had listed him in “critical but stable” condition, the statement added. And the patient reportedly showed some “positive signs”.
The hospital statement did not elaborate on Duncan’s condition. Duncan, a Liberian national, was tested positive for Ebola on September 30 as the first confirmed case diagnosed in the US. He arrived in Dallas on September 20 to visit family and fell ill several days later. The 42-year-old went to the Dallas hospital on September 26, only to be dismissed with some antibiotics by the doctors. Two days later, he was rushed back to the hospital.

he Election Commission has sought a report from the Haryana chief electoral officer on the state government’s decision to clear a Gurgaon land deal involving Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra. The report will help the EC ascertain the facts of the case and determine if the approval was in violation of the model code of conduct. The EC has asked the state CEO and chief secretary to revert with the details of alleged letter validating mutation of the land relating to the deal between M/s Skylight Hospitality owned by Vadra and real-estate firm DLF Universal Ltd.
On October 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sought EC’s intervention against Haryana government’s approval of the Vadra land deal, claiming that it went against the model code. Maha bitter battle on the cards
This month’s assembly elections in Maharashtra may well prove to be one of the most acrimonious contests in recent memory AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
S
ince the parting of close associates invariably arouses considerable antagonism, there is nothing surprising about the present hostility between the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the end of their 25-year-old partnership, and between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which have called off their 15-year-old ties. Hence the Shiv Sena’s charge that the BJP has “backstabbed” it and the Congress accusation that the inordinate ambitions of NCP leader Ajit Pawar led to the collapse of the alliance between the two parties. But even as these barbs and counter-barbs are expected to continue, what is worrying is the possibility that the battle may acquire a Marathi vs Gujarati overtone. Given the rancorous background of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, which led to the division of
downhill slope after Balaseheb’s death. The animus between the Shiv Sena and the BJP will grow if there are signs that the latter is cozying up to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) led by Uddhav’s cousin, Raj, with whom the former has a hotand-cold relationship. Raj, however, may have botched his chances by overplaying the parochial card by saying that he will call for autonomy for Maharashtra although he did clarify that this will not mean independence. rime Minister Narendra Modi’s “extremely successful” US visit, especially his meeting with top business leaders there, has seen a US-India business body committing to $42 billion investment in India with many lauding the “Gujarat model” of development. In a survey following Modi’s five-day visit, the US-India Business Council (USIBC), in a survey, found that $42 billion was willing to be committed over the next two-three years for investment by just 20 percent of the members surveyed, said government sources. If the rest of the USIBC members and the top U.S. businesses had been surveyed, the figure would have exceeded $100 billion, the official added. There was a “very positive” investor sentiment among the businesspersons in the U.S. “based on the experience in Gujarat”, said the source. What added to the investor confidence was Prime Minister Modi being very conversant with the “nuts and bolts” of business during his interactions with the top CEOs of global firms like Google, Boeing, Black Rock and Pepsico. Modi’s position as being the head of a majority government, without being hobbled by the pulls and pressures of allies, also added to the confidence levels. The Prime Minister conveyed with great clarity on assurances of his government of removing red tape and of making the business environment easy, which also helped, the sources added. NEW DELHI: One thing that singularly defined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high voltage US visit was the open courting of American capital and his efforts to alter the narrative about India as an investment destination. In his individual and collective meetings with business leaders in New York and Washington, he pledged to take a series of steps in the coming months to ease doing of business in India. And he appears to have succeeded in persuading this weary but important group of interlocutors to transfer capital, technology and best practices as part of their investments in India. All indications emanating from the country are that his interactions are going to translate into several deals. “India has the potential to be on a very different development trajectory” under the Modi-led government, says Ajay Banga, chairman of the US-India Business Council, which has identified over $41 billion of investment in the next two to three years. And that’s based on a survey of just 20 percent of members of the USIBC, which would meet on October 9 to discuss India’s growth prospects under Modi at its annual Leadership
Conference. “I deeply believe that he’s committed to changing India,” said Caterpillar’s Douglas Oberhelman after meeting Modi. Boeing CEO James McNerney said the company would accelerate its engagement with India. “We’ve got folks who are firming up travel plans,” gushed Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal during a media briefing. Many US companies now expect there will be a better business climate in India as Modi has promised to “implement and enforce all parameters of ease of business”. They see long-term opportunities in sectors like infrastructure, defense and aerospace. Modi has his sights on export-oriented manufacturing FDI, says political scientist Sonal Pandya of the University of Virginia, that creates skilled jobs and introduces advanced technologies without intensifying local competition, given the sharp political division in India over FDI in sectors like multi-brand retail. The private sector in the US holds huge investible resources. It owns and incubates an array of technologies that are of immense use in India’s development process.

The president was “very pleased with” and “certainly values the opportunity that he had to visit personally with Prime Minister Modi”, Obama’s press secretary Josh Earnest said when asked about the future of US-India relations after the Modi visit. “It reflects that depth of the strong relationship between the US and India that the two leaders were able to come together and discuss a broad array of topics,” Earnest told the media. “Each of those topics represents an area of important cooperation between our two countries. “I’m confident that as the relationship between our countries progresses, so will those areas of cooperation,” Earnest added. He also pointed to a “pretty detailed list of the agreements that were reached” between the two
leaders. The agreements were “indicative of the wide range of areas where the US and India have a strong, cooperative partnership.” “The president certainly values that aspect of the relationship between our two countries.” It was the first time the two men met in person and “I know the president enjoyed the visit with Prime Minister Modi to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial”, he said, referring to Obama’s spontaneous gesture in joining the memorial visit. During the visit, “the Indian people saw some important images,” Earnest said. “They saw the president of the US and the prime minister of India sitting down, side by side in the Oval Office, discussing shared interests and priorities between our two countries. “The people of India also saw the president travel with Modi to the Martin Luther King Junior Memorial on the National Mall. “It also demonstrates a shared commitment to the success of our two democracies,” Earnest
said. “I think it’s indicative of the kind of strong partnership that exists between the two leaders and between our two countries.” During the visit, India and the U.S. committed to make joint and concerted efforts to dismantle terrorist safe havens, including four Pakistan-based groups Lashkar-e Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, the D-Company and the Haqqanis besides Al Qaeda. But India didn’t join the U.S. coalition against the Islamic State terrorists. Asked if the U.S. was disappointed over that, he simply said: “We certainly value the strong security partnership we have with India. “We do have a shared commitment to combating terrorism. Both countries, both India and the U.S., are dealing with threats. “And we value the strong relationship we have so that we can cooperate to meet those threats, to confront those threats, and to mitigate the risk that they pose to our citizens both at home and around the world.”

The official delegation will be led by Chief Secretary Carrie Lam. Although student leaders are not satisfied with the way the government has structured the dialogue, they believe they have no choice but to participate, said Lester Shum, deputy secretary of the Hong Kong Federation of Students.
But Lester warned that if the authorities tried to dodge students’ demands and did not act in good faith, student leaders will leave the dialogue. CHENNAI: Actor Sathyaraj says his role in the forthcoming Tamil action movie Poojai is the best opportunity he has got since his 1993 cult hit Walter Vetrivel also in Tamil. Sathyaraj has played a police officer in both films. “I really enjoyed playing police officer in Poojai. I think it’s the best opportunity I have got since Walter Vetrivel,” he told reporters at a promotional event here on October 4. I’m extremely happy with all the roles I’ve played so far because they’ve all been meaningful,” Tulasi, who is in her 40s, told IANS. I need to thank Vishal for making me a heroine in the industry again,” Shruti said at a promotional event here. The daughter of Tamil star Kamal Haasan and actress Sarika doesn’t have any qualms of being away from Tamil filmdom. “I come from a multi-cultural family and I belong to Indian cinema. anised version of the Bourne series, Yaan only ends up being an archetypal Tamil film interjected with a few action and chase sequences. Yaan has a promising story, but it kicks in quite late because until the
interval it concentrates on ticking off all the boxes in the commercial cinema format. It spends time on developing a romantic track between Jiiva and Thulasi we are least interested in. Both of them make a terrible pair
on screen. There are three songs placed at the wrong junctures to add to the woes. The entire first half is filled with scenes that we’ve seen over and over again in Tamil cinema over the last decade. And what you see is definitely not entertainment. It’s tough to choose between Jiiva and Chandran to blame for the big budget mess. Jiiva has been an actor and he should know best what will be accepted by the audience. He has worked as a cinematographer for over two decades and he should’ve known better too. Together they’ve produced a film that makes you yawn in boredom. Maybe, Chandran is a better cinematographer than a filmmaker. Or maybe he just isn’t ready yet to be a filmmaker. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

Haider is a beast that just won’t be tamed by regular cinematic definitions. There is flamboyance and subtlety, both at once in the treat-
ment. Elegance and earthiness rub shoulders in the execution of what is regarded as one of Shakespeare’s most complex tragedies. And to place Hamlet in militant Kashmir ...what a masterstroke! Haider is the kind of rarest of rare
cinema that unfurls wave after wave of exquisite narrative fuel into the frames, providing a kind of compelling narration that is propelled as much by the passionate writing as the intuitive direction. Bhardwaj understands his Shake-
speare inside out. He transmutes Hamlet into Haider with an unbridled fearlessness, tempered by a restraint of treatment that goes a long way in imparting an urgent sense of beauty to the work. The basic idea is compelling to the core. Freeing his narrative from the fretful freedom of excessive self indulgence seen in his last film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, Bhardwaj’s vision takes wings creating one of the most complex and compelling mother-son relationships seen before and after Yash Chopra’s Deewaar. That Tabu and Shahid play the mother and son torn by the agonizing disappearance of the man they both love (Narendra Jha, a surprisingly well cast actor in a role that is more about absence than presence) is a blessing for Bhardwaj’s Shakespeare. — Subhash K. HICAGO (IL) -- Sri Venkateswara Swami (SVS) Temple (Balaji) located at 1145 Sullivan Road, Aurora, IL celebrated its annual Appreciation Banquet at Waterford Banquet & Conference Center in Elmhurst, IL on October 4. The evening started with the Social Hour emceed by Dr. Sanjay Rao. Balaji Vidya Pitham students sang a prayer song followed by the national anthems of India and the US. Dr N S Rao, vice-chairman of SVS Temple, who delivered the welcome speech, said that the temple had been in existence for nearly 30 years ever since it opened its doors to devotees for worship and for participation in social and cultural gatherings.
Chairman Athimoolam Naidu said the temple enjoyed an enviable reputation as one of the most beautiful and truly authentic Hindu Temples outside India, and one which was also involved in youth education, cultural activities, summer camps, health fair, Balaji Garden, Yoga and Meditation programs and so on. He also announced future plans to build additional class rooms, bigger auditorium and a separate dining area which, he said, would require additional funding, and appealed to devotees for their generous support. A video presentation comprising of temple religious activities during the past year was shown to highlight the authentic manner in which temple priests conduct
religious celebrations. The temple’s new web portal was introduced by Anu Agnihotri on the occasion. Awards were given to 3 temple volunteers--Anu Agnihotri from Volunteer and Public Relations Committee; Usha Pariti from Cultural Affairs and Banquet Committee and Jayashree Parthasarathy of Youth and Education Committee for their untiring efforts to help with the growth of the organization. Keynote speaker Vasudha Narayanan, who was introduced by the Religious Committee Chairperson Ranganathan Hemmige, described the role of the temples in society and in promoting Hinduism all over the world. Panchavadyam (rendered by Chicago Kalakshetra) is an essential part of the Kerala Temple tradition. It consists of five different instruments called Thimila, Maddalam, Eddaka, Kombu and Ilathalam. This melam is considered as a Deva Vadyam, and most of the instruments are played inside the temple. The main cultural program of the evening was a light music concert with live orchestra in multiple languages like Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Popular Chicago singers included Bhupendra Singh, Praveen Jaligama, Jairaj Narayanan, Srinivasan Rajan, Manjunath Rammohan, Rama Raghuraman, Parimala Prasad, Sharanya Gururajan, Minu Kartik and Manmeet Kaur. Navaratri, Dasara celebrated at Grayslake temple
BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO (IL) -- An impressive Vijadashami (Dasara), along with Navaratri festivities, was celebrated with pomp and gaiety by over 2,500 devotees of Lake and Cook Counties at the Grayslake Temple, on October 4. This ten- day festival started with Navaratri Devi Kalash Sthapan on September 24 with all the Vedic rituals by Pt. Anil Joshi Ji. Devotees brought their family Kalash to take the blessings of Ma Durga. Every day, Devi Pujan and Durga Sapsati Path were performed by Pt. Ganesh Ji along with a number of devotees followed by Ras Garba every evening. Different devotees sponsored Garba and Dandiya event and distributed Prasad as the deity’s blessing to more than 400 attendees who showed their utmost devotion to the Goddess by dancing to the melodious tunes of live singing by Rita Patel and Atul Soni and DJ by Mehul Rami and Mike Patel. Vasu Choksi as a Master of Ceremony presented the Garba event magnificently as she does it every year. Bipin Patel, Navinder Manna and team organized the event and efficiently regulated the crowd. Mata Ki Chowki and Jagaran were organized as a part of Navaratri celebrations during which Anu Gupta and others sang Bhajans. On October 2, the Ashtami day, special Alankaram for Ma Durga as ‘Vana Devi’ was prepared by Pt. Joshi Ji and Geetha Patil. T. LOUIS (MO) -- Two gas stations were robbed within hours, one in South County and the other in Pine Lawn, early on October 2. A man, described as being 5-foot-8, wearing a stocking cap, bandana and a coat, entered the BP Station in the 5600 block of Telegraph Road in Oakville, Missouri around 2 am armed with a handgun. Authorities say the man stole an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing the scene. Less than two hours later, a Phillips 66 in the 6100 block of Natural Bridge was robbed by a man who entered the store, jumped over a counter and took an undisclosed amount of money from the store. According to Pine Lawn Police, the suspect jumped over the counter and struggled with the woman who was working behind it. Police say the man was wearing a camouflage hat and has “been on a rampage for a week.” Police say he is the suspect in several other gas station robberies.

hicago (IL) -- The Biggest Concert Tour in Bollywood’s history set the stage on fire on September 26 at the Sears Centre
Arena. The SLAM concert was a spectacular live two-and-a-half-hour stage show with mindblowing music and dance routines that kept the audience spellbound. King Khan along with Farah Khan, Deepika Padukone, Malaika Arora Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and singer Kanika Kapoor took their fans on a magical journey of Bollywood hits which were professionally choreographed for this concert tour. Entertainment Inc, this event in Chicago was organized by Babubhai Patel, Bhavesh Patel from Sahil and Nick Patel and Mayur Patel from L.A. Tan. Sahil and LA Tan are pioneers in the US for organizing big shows of Bollywood stars in the Chicagoland area. The smash-hit show was a collective effort of Bhavesh Patel, Babu Patel CEO of Shahil, Mayur and Nick Patel, CEO of L.A. Tan. The SLAM tour was for 10 days in the US and Canada covering total 6 shows aimed at promoting ‘Happy New Year’ film. The Chicago show was the 4th concert of their US and Canada trip. The show began with Nick Patel saying a few words about all the stars who have worked tirelessly to put together the show. He acknowledged their dedication and hard

This was followed by Abhishek Bachchan’s entrance which was another class act. He interacted with the audience and showed his Chicago spirit, by wearing a BEARS jersey under his costume. Next came the one and only- Shah Rukh Khan, who came flying on a rope from the audience area. It was truly spectacular. Boman Irani and Farah Khan provided a lot of laughs with their comedy routine and
dance moves. Sizzling Malaika Khan and handsome hunk Sonu Sood took to the stage next and performed an electrifying dance number which thrilled the audience. The couple was given a signed photograph of King Khan, a bike helmet and a brand new Harley Davidson motorbike. Audiences were impressed with their dressing style and their spontaneous inner actions on stage. adies, try not to stress too much. New research says anxious, easily-stressed women are more prone to developing Alzheimer’s later in life. After following 800 women for nearly four decades, researchers say certain personality dispositions can put you at risk for the memory-robbing disease, reports huffingtonpost.com. Middle-aged women with an average age of 46 were given a battery of personality tests and asked to make note of any periods of prolonged stress longer than one month to determine certain traits and tendencies.
Researchers then looked at how outgoing or withdrawn participants were, if they were easily distressed, prone to worrying and jealousy, and if they showed signs of neuroticism— a fundamental personality trait in the study of psychology characterized by anxiety, fear and other things. Over the course of the study, 19 percent of women developed dementia, a kind of brain disease. But women who scored high for neuroticism were twice as likely to develop the disease than their lowstress counterparts.
Withdrawn women with high stress scores were twice as likely as outgoing and less distressed women to develop Alzheimer’s. It’s not known exactly what brings on the disease, but experts believe it to be a combination of lifestyle factors, genetics, and environment. Other research has also suggested stress could be a contributing factor. A 2013 study suggested that stress steroids in the brain can impair memory and increase the amount of plaque-building proteins. And taking a different approach, another study found that stress-busting yoga and meditation can even slow the progression of dementia.

ven having as few as one or two family meals a week during adolescence may protect your kids from being obese when they turn into adults, says a study. Researchers believe that coming together for meals may provide opportunities for emotional connections among family members, the food is more likely to be healthy and adolescents may be exposed to the parental model of healthy
eating behavior. For Project EAT (Eating and Activity among Teens), the researchers used data from a 10-year longitudinal study (2,287 participants), to examine weight-related variables (dietary intake, physical activity and weight control behavior) among adolescents. Among adolescents who reported that they never ate family meals together, 60 percent were overweight and 29 percent were obese at the 10-year follow-up.
Common painkiller helps lungs IANS, NEW YORK
R
esearchers have found that ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller, could reduce lung inflammation associated with ageing. Immune cells from old mouse lungs fought tuberculosis bacteria as effectively as cells from young mice after lung inflammation was reduced by ibuprofen, the findings showed. The drug had no effect on the immune response to TB in young mice. “Very few researchers have linked inflammation to infectious disease in old age, even though TB in particular will drive that inflammation even further,” said senior study author Joanne Turner, an associate professor at Ohio State Univer-
sity. “The inflammation-associated changes we saw in the lungs were important findings,” he added. Though the research was conducted on mice, Turner co-led a previous study showing that mouse and human lungs develop the same profile of pro-inflammatory proteins and fatty molecules with age, creating an environment that impairs the immune response to infection.
