President Obama’s last goodbye From his adopted hometown of Chicago, the 44th President of the US called on the country to be “anxious, jealous guardians of democracy” IANS, CHICAGO

O

utgoing US President Barack Obama bid farewell to Americans in an emotional speech with the same message of hope and optimism that brought him into the White House eight years ago. From his adopted hometown of Chicago, the city where he found purpose in public life, the 44th President of the US called on the country to be “anxious, jealous guardians of democracy”, CNN reported. While asking Americans to stay committed to democratic values and persist in their optimism for change, Obama also expressed warning for the years to come. “Tonight it’s my turn to say thanks ... Everyday I learned from you. You made me a better president, and you made me a better man,” the President told a crowd of about 20,000 people in an hourlong address. “After eight years as your President, I still believe that.” “And it’s not just my belief. It’s the beating heart of our American idea — our bold experiment in self-government,” the President told the American people in a large convention hall a few blocks from Grant Park, where he spoke to supporters on the night of his historic election in 2008. He implored his backers to be vigilant in protecting basic American values that he warned could

Trump appoints David Shulkin WASHINGTON: President-elect Donald Trump this week chose Undersecretary of Health David Shulkin to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, a media report said. “I have no doubt Dr Shulkin will be able to lead the turnaround our Department of Veterans Affairs needs. His sole mandate will be to serve our veterans and restore the level of care we owe to our brave men and women in the military,” CNBC quoted Trump as saying. “Sadly our great veterans have not gotten the level of care they deserve, but Dr Shulkin has the experience and the vision to ensure we will meet the healthcare needs of every veteran,” he said. “Dr Shulkin is an incredibly gifted doctor who is using his elite talents for medicine to care for our heroes and Americans can have faith he will get the job done right.” —IANS

come under siege. “Democracy can buckle when we give in to fear,” he said. “So just as we, as citizens, must remain vigilant against external aggression, we must guard against a weakening of the values that make us who we are.” And he warned against turning inward, telling Democrats that only by involving themselves in a real political discourse could they hope to renew the hopeful vision he brought to the White House eight years ago. He warned that “laws alone won’t be enough” in resolving per-

sistent differences between Americans. “Hearts must change,” he said. The speech also reflected the unique situation Obama will confront as he leaves the Oval Office. At just 55, he is preparing for an active post-presidency in which he will champion many of the same core issues he worked on in the White House, including minority rights and opportunities for young people, the Los Angeles Times reported. In 4,300 words, Obama also listed major feats his administration had accomplished during his

tenure, including reversing recession, opening up a new chapter with Cuba, inking the Iranian nuclear deal, taking out Osama bin Laden, promoting gay marriage and increasing medical insurance coverage. His successor, President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to undo some of his signature policies. He would be sworn into office on January 20. The President also stressed solidarity despite a presidency sometimes at odds with the Congress. “Democracy does not require uniformity,” Obama said. “Our

founders quarrelled and compromised, and expected us to do the same. But they knew that democracy does require a basic sense of solidarity -- the idea that for all our outward differences, we are all in this together; that we rise or fall as one.” He said he has not abandoned his vision of progressive change but warned that it now comes with a new set of caveats. Senior advisors said Obama knows that many progressive, religious and ethnic minorities and immigrants were feeling apprehensive with the approach of the handover to Trump, the Los Angeles Times reported. Obama’s successor was elected after promising to crack down on immigration, scrutinize Muslims in the US and challenge what he termed “political correctness”. He paid an emotional tribute to First Lady Michelle Obama, addressed his children, and thanked Vice President Joe Biden, who were all in attendance except younger daughter Sasha. The President’s younger daughter is in Washington to prepare for an exam on Wednesday morning. His voice quaked when describing Michelle’s contribution. “You took on a role you didn’t ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humor.” “You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody,” Obama said to his wife.

I gave Russia dossier on Trump to FBI: McCain IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Senator John McCain has admitted that he gave the FBI a dossier detailing claims of a Russian blackmail plot against President-elect Donald Trump. The Arizona lawmaker, who is a longtime Trump critic, made the public statement as questions piled up about his alleged role in spreading an unverified and error-riddled document that Trump has denounced as “a complete and total fabrication.” “Late last year, I received sensitive information that has since been made public,” the New York Post quoted McCain in its report. “Upon examination of the contents, and unable to make a judgment about their accuracy, I delivered the information to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. That has been the extent of my contact with the FBI or any other

government agency regarding this issue,” the senator said. Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein, who contributed to a story about the dossier reported by CNN said McCain was given the docu-

ment by a former British ambassador to Moscow. “It came from a former British MI6 agent who was hired from a political opposition research firm in Washington who was doing work about Donald

Trump for both Republican and Democratic candidates opposed to Trump,” Bernstein told CNN. “They were looking at Trump's business ties. They saw some questionable things about Russians, about his businesses in Russia. They in turn hired this MI6 former investigator,” said the Watergate reporter. “He then came up with additional information from his Russian sources. He was very concerned by the implications of it. He then took it to an FBI colleague that he had known in his undercover work for years,” Bernstein also said. “He took it to this FBI man in Rome who turned it over to the bureau in Washington in August,” Bernstein added. “And then, a former British ambassador to Russia independently was made aware of these findings and he took the information to Senator John McCain in the period just after the election, and showed it to him - additional findings,” he added.

Punjab heads for triangular contest

Traditional rivals, the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine and the Congress, are aware of the political challenge being posed by the fledgling Aam Aadmi Party JAIDEEP SARIN, CHANDIGARH

W

ith some days to go for crucial assembly elections in Punjab, political uncertainty looms over the frontier state on the issue of who will assume power post-March 11, once the results are declared. The reason for this is that Punjab, for the first time, is witnessing triangular contests in most of the 117 assembly constituencies. Traditional rivals, the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine and the Congress, are not only fighting each other, but are aware of the political challenge being posed by the latest entrant on Punjab’s political turf — the fledgling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). As of today, none of the parties seems to have the edge, even though each one of them claims to be heading for a clear, and even sweeping, majority in the February 4 election. Not surprisingly, in this uncertain period, a rather unusual question is being asked: “Will Punjab end up with a hung assembly?” Till about a year ago, the AAP

Congress leaders Dr Manmohan Singh and Captain Amrinder Singh launch party’s manifesto ahead of Punjab assembly polls, in New Delhi. (Photo: IANS)

had made formidable inroads in the state and opinion polls even suggested a massive win. But a lot has changed since then. After seemingly peaking at the wrong time, the AAP started imploding politically from June last year. Thus, the party is fighting two battles — one with the Akali Dal-BJP and Congress, and the

NEWS DIGEST

EC censures Sakshi Maharaj NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on January 12 censured BJP MP Sachchidanand Hari Sakshi, better known as Sakshi Maharaj, for his controversial statements in which he blamed 'Muslims' for India's population boom. The Commission held that the remarks were a violation of the Model Code of Conduct and rejected the Uttar Pradesh MP's contention that the statements were not

in a public or election meeting and as such did not come in the ambit of the poll code. “The Commission has considered your reply and has not found it satisfactory. Any statement to the effect of promoting enmity between different classes of society in connection with election on the grounds of religion made during electioneering or otherwise is violative of MCC,” the poll panel said.

Madame Tussauds in Delhi soon NEW DELHI: World famous wax museum Madame Tussauds is set to debut in India in June, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and American pop star Lady Gaga’s statues as some of the star attractions. “Madame Tussauds will open doors in June this year,” Anshul Jain, General Manager and Director of Merlin Entertainment Pvt Ltd, said here at a press conference. The first India branch of the museum will be in the capital New Delhi. The museum, renowned for the creation of detailed and lifelike wax figures, will house statues of prominent figures from the world of sports, Bollywood, politics, et al. Amitabh is likely to attend the

launch of the museum, which will be spread across the first and second floors of the Regal Cinema complex in Connaught Place here. This is the 23rd branch of Madame Tussauds across the world, and Merlin Entertainment is looking forward to a red carpet welcome. —IANS

second one within itself. Allegations of corruption in allotment of tickets, accusations of immoral activities of some leaders, lack of any big leader from Punjab who could be projected as the party’s face, and internal rumblings about “outsiders” — mainly leaders from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and other states — running the AAP

show in Punjab at the cost of local leaders, have all taken a toll on the party. In the past six months, there has been an exodus of state and district level leaders from the fold. But top party leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh, Durgesh Pathak and others are upbeat about AAP repeating a “Delhi-type political

magic in Punjab” when it won 67 of the 70 assembly seats in the 2015 assembly polls. Things are not too tidy either with the ruling Akali Dal-BJP alliance or the main opposition party — the Congress, which believes it is on an upswing. The Akali Dal-BJP alliance, which has been in power in the state since 2007 for two consecutive terms, is aiming for a third stint. Akali Dal president and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is out to once again deploy his strategic skills which, in the 2012 assembly election, broke the five-year AkaliCongress cycle of governments. But his party faces anti-incumbency of the past decade, charges of corruption, and criticism that the financial health and clout of the ruling Badal family — headed by 89-year-old Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal — has been multiplying at the cost of the state. All the three major players are charting a difficult and uncertain course, leaving the voters a tad confused about which is the lesser evil.

‘Some forces plotting to split us’ MOHIT DUBEY, LUCKNOW

S

amajwadi Party (SP) Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav made a passionate pitch to his supporters and party workers here and said that while some forces were out to split the party, he was doing everything to ensure that did not happen. “This party has emerged out of a lot of labor, hard work and struggle of party workers and its founding leaders, I will neither allow it to disintegrate nor the party symbol to go,” Mulayam told an unscheduled interaction with workers at the party office at Vikramaditya Marg here. Appearing resigned to the fate of an imminent split in the party he formed 25 years ago, Mulayam Singh also said he has given everything to the party and that he was left with nothing. “Mera jo bhi tha, maine party ko de diya hai. Par sabne ye manna chahiye ki yeh party sangharshon se yahan tak pahunchi hai (I have given everything to the party and everyone should accept that the party has reached here after much struggle),” he said in one emotive tone even as his supporters raised slogans in his favor. The Samajwadi Party chief stated how he had gone to jail during the Emergency when Akhilesh Yadav was a kid. He also mentioned how

Samajwadi Party (SP) Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in Lucknow. (Photo: IANS)

Shivpal Singh Yadav, his younger brother, who was seated next to him, would bring food for him to the prison during his period of incarceration and later hide it at various places. Targeting his cousin, Ram Gopal Yadav, who is mentoring the Akhilesh Yadav faction, the Yadav chieftain said everyone now knew who was trying to break the party. “Everyone knows who has met the leaders of our opponents,” the 77-year-old leader said and pointed out that while he has mingled with opposition leaders these were “just social courtesies”. He was apparently referring to potshots taken by Ram Gopal at

him with regards to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence at a family wedding in Saifai, Uttar Pradesh. He also accused the Rajya Sabha member, who was expelled from the party on December 30 last year, of going ahead to form a separate party — the Akhil Bharatiya Samajwadi Party (ABSP) with the party symbol of a motorcycle. Political observers here feel that Mulayam Singh was now reconciled to the fact that all efforts of a patchup with his son have failed and that a split in the party is imminent. With elections to the state assembly just round the corner, fear of the party symbol being frozen are doing the rounds in both camps.

Elections: Will Modi be lucky? Except for the BJP’s success in Assam last year, the prime minister’s appeal as the ‘vikas purush’ or the man of development hasn’t worked anywhere else up till now AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

I

t is obvious that the ensuing elections in five states will be an excellent mid-term appraisal of Narendra Modi’s tenure. The interest in their outcome will be all the greater because the Prime Minister hasn’t had it all in his own way as may have been expected after his resounding victory in 2014. Except for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) success in Assam last year, Modi’s appeal as the ‘vikas purush’ or the man of development hasn’t worked anywhere else up till now. In 2015, the BJP was badly trounced by a fledgling party in Delhi and comprehensively beaten by a motley coalition in Bihar. Its sole success in the following year in Assam — accompanied by defeats in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry — was over an aging Chief Minister and his tired Congress party. There was little doubt at that stage that the wind of popular expectations which swept Modi to power at the Centre had dissipated. His indifferent performances might have continued this year, too, if providence had not intervened in the form of undermining the chances of the ruling Samajwadi

Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh. As it is, the SP would have faced the anti-incumbency factor as its stint in power hasn’t been as much of a success story as its personable Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav, will like everyone to believe. But Samajwadi party’s temporary breaking into two with Akhilesh on one side and his father Mulayam Singh Yadav on the other, cannot but ensure a much easier ride for the BJP to power than before.

Luck, therefore, seems to have turned for Modi in the new year. Even if the findings of an opinion poll which gives a majority to the BJP in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly are ignored, the fact is undeniable that an SP at war with itself can hardly be expected to win, let alone put up a stiff fight, irrespective of how much Akhilesh is liked by the younger generation because of his progrowth and non-casteist approach

to politics. Considering that the worst of the demonetization process is over with the banks no longer as crowded as before, it is possible that Modi’s developmental pitch will work once again as it did in 2014 when the BJP won 71 of the 80 parliamentary seats in the state and its ally, the Apna Dal, two. A victory in Uttar Pradesh is likely to be regarded by the BJP as a favorable omen for 2019. If the

party also comes out on top in Uttarakhand and Goa, as the opinion poll says, then the BJP may well believe that it is on the way to consolidating its position on a wider basis. However, if the bad spell which clouded the party’s fortunes in 2015 and 2016 has ended, it has less to do with Modi than with the fortuitous presence for the BJP of a fractured opposition. There are several reasons why the latter has failed to get its act together. One is that there is no inspirational leader with ideas about an economic road map for the country and about ways to address problems such as endemic corruption, violence against women and the continuance of reservations which bolsters the caste system. As the alternate pole at the national level, the Congress still reposes its faith in the NehruGandhi family. But as Rahul Gandhi’s occasional disappearing acts suggest — he is away in London at present — he is not an inveterate political animal. Even if his successes makes BJP confident about facing next general election, the Prime Minister will still have to show results in the matter of curbing black money and promoting employment-generating growth.

Om Puri: Actor for all seasons with passion There is no lack of roles, big or small, villainous or comic, to recall Om Puri’s skill, who passed away last week VIKAS DATTA, NEW DELHI

H

is craggy, pockmarked but a distinctive face may have kept him from becoming a leading man in films. Nevertheless, Om Puri used the remarkable range of expressions he could convey, from impotent rage to blazing menace to comic exasperation, along with his trademark baritone, to play some immortal roles on the big and small screen in India and abroad. The true tribute to any actor is in remembering some of his performances and for Om Puri who recently passed away, there is no shortage of roles, big or small, heroic, comic or villainous, in masala or art films to recall his skill. Will we remember him for his

depiction of the victimised tribal of Aakrosh (1980), conveying his anguished helplessness by facial expressions till the very last shocking scene when he finally opens his mouth in a loud protest, the hapless policeman in Ardh Satya (1982), the enthusiastic poetry-lover in In Custody/Muhafiz (1993) or sinister terrorist Sanatan in Maachis (1996)? Or will we prefer to remember him in another light, as suspicious secretary Banwari Lal in Chachi 420 (1998), the jovial and kind but dutiful Inspector Khan in Pyar To Hona Hi Tha (1997) or determined Inspector Udham Singh in Gupt (1997). Then there is also his portrayal of British-Pakistani George Khan, who is loving but can be authoritarian and abusive towards his mixed family

in East Is East (1999)? Any list of his most memorable performances is bound to be most subjective, but let’s try to list a few of these, from a wide swathe. Ardh Satya- This was the movie that made his name, and fetched him the National Award for Best Actor. As Sub Inspector Anant Velankar, Om Puri well conveyed the helplessness of a low-ranking police inspector who soon realizes the limits of his uniform’s power, the shameless manipulation of power by the elite and how justice is only a word. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron - As Ahuja, the dipsomaniac and corrupt Punjabi builder who wears sun-glasses round the clock, Om Puri held his own against a powerhouse of abundant talent in this cult classic. He

Om Puri as Gen Zia ul Haq in the film ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’.

also grabbed some of the best scenes — especially the one in which he comes across Satish Shah propped in his coffin, thinks his car has broken down and tries to help him. He also pops up as a sun-glass sporting Duryodhana in the epic climax scene and has one of the film’s most-remembered dialogues, when he storms out of a meeting with his rival (Pankaj Kapoor): “Tarneja, tena main dekh lunga, D’Mello, tu te gaya.” Tamas - In this disturbing story

of the circumstances in which India and Pakistan were born as independent nations, Om Puri plays low-caste laborer Nathu, who is cynically manipulated into an act which leads to riots and eventually his own death. And let us end with the two cameos where the actor well marked his presence - Nahari, the unrepentant rioter in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi, and as General Zia ul-Haq in Charlie Wilson’s War.

our Indian-American scientists have been chosen among 102 researchers who will receive the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) — the highest honor given by the US government to science and engineering professionals. These are: Pankaj Lal from Montclair State University ( Department of Agriculture); Kaushik Chowdhury from Northeastern University (Department of Defense), Manish Arora, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Department of Health and Human Services) and Aradhna Tripati, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) (National Science Foundation). “I congratulate these outstanding scientists and engineers on

Indian-origin blind man films daily abuse in UK LONDON: An Indian-origin man in Britain has fitted his guide dog with a camera to highlight the discrimination he faces while travelling around London. Amit Patel, 37, is constantly pushed out of the way as he navigates around the trains and buses of the capital with Kika, his guide dog, said a report in the Independent. Patel said the majority of Londoners are “fantastic” towards him and his dog, but he does admit to losing his temper on “bad days”. He added that he decided to video his commute so that his wife Seema can share footage on social media to raise awareness. “It all started when people barged me out of the way, they hit (Kika) with umbrellas, bags. I get shoulder charged every day and when my wife looks back at the footage she can see they have done it deliberately,” he said. “They (people) have loads of space to get past but they seem to think it is fun to barge into a blind person.” He lost his sight unexpectedly in 2012 to an eye disease known as keratoconus. their impactful work. These innovators are working to help keep the United States on the cutting edge, showing that Federal investments in science lead to advancements that expand our knowledge of the

world around us and contribute to our economy,” Obama said in a statement. Lal, who earned his Master’s from Delhi School of Economics, is an associate professor in the

nomic geography, human dimensions of ecosystem management, natural resource conservation and policy and climate change. Chowdhury, who received his PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology, directs the Next Generation Networks and Systems (GENESYS) Lab.

He is the winner of the “NSF CAREER” award in 2015 and the Office of Naval Research Director of Research Early Career Award in 2016. An environmental epidemiologist and exposure biologist, Arora’s research focuses on effects of prenatal and early childhood chemical exposures on life-long health trajectories. He is known for his work on biomarkers that utilise human deciduous and permanent teeth to reconstruct the timing of exposure to various harmful chemicals and essential nutrients. At UCLA, Tripati’s lab uses the chemistry of natural compounds as well as models as tools to understand how the Earth works to understand climate change, the oceans, and the transfer of carbon between the biosphere, atmosphere and oceans.

auding the deep and emotional attachment Persons of Indian Origin in Girmitiya countries have for their motherland, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told PIOs to obtain Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards by June 30. "We have extended the deadline to convert PIO cards into OCI cards to June 30 from December 31, without penalty," Modi told the Indian diaspora at the 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations here.

"We have also set up special immigration counters at New Delhi and Bengaluru airports since January 1 for OCI card holders. Similar counters will be opened at more airports in the country," said Modi in his inaugural address at the annual event. Girmityas are the fourth or fifth generation of descendents of indentured Indian laborers who during the 19th century went to Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa and the Caribbean islands to work on agricultural fields and settled down in these countries.

Russian dossier ‘Nazi’: Trump The President-elect denounces as a “Nazi” tactic the preparation and the leak of a dubious US dossier purporting to show that Russians had material to blackmail him

I think Russia was behind election hacking: Trump

ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

T

ensions between Donald Trump and the US intelligence agencies is growing with the Presidentelect denouncing as a “Nazi” tactic the preparation and the leak of a dubious dossier purporting to show that Russians had material to blackmail him. His first news conference as President-elect this week was overshadowed by the leak of the unsubstantiated documents originally prepared by a former British intelligence agent and a synopsis that was shared by US intelligence agencies with both Trump and President Barack Obama. “I think it was disgraceful — disgraceful that the intelligence agencies allowed any information that turned out to be so false and fake out,” he said. “That's something that Nazi Germany would have done and did do.” In a low point for the US, intelligence agencies — domestic and

US sanctions N. US radar against missile threat WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has deployed high-tech radar to keep watch for a potential North Korean long-range-missile launch in the coming months, according to a US defense official. It is the first US military response to Pyongyang’s claim that it could launch an intercontinental ballistic missile, CNN said.

The sea-based X-band radar (SB-X) is able to track the longrange launches and provide crucial data, the defense official said. The radar has been deployed several times in the past to monitor North Korean missile activity. But it can only remain at sea for a certain period of time.

sis, as purveyors of “fake news”. In ways that could affect India, he spoke of his plans to stem flow of manufacturing from the US and took aim at the pharmaceutical sector. “We've got to get our drug industry back,” he said. “Our drug industry has been disastrous. They're leaving left and right. They supply our drugs, but they don't make them here, to a large extent.”

“He (Russian President Vladimir Putin) should not be doing it. He won’t be doing it,” said Trump, adding, “Russia will have much greater respect for our country when I’m leading than when other people have led it.” Trump’s first public acknowledgement came after months of denial and sometimes even disparagement of US intelligence community.

India exported $6 billion worth of drugs to the US in 2015 and could feel the impact of this policy, although it could also gain from his plans to cut the cost of pharmaceuticals because of India's leadership in generics, an area in which US companies have not left America. He threatened to impose a “border tax” on companies that move manufacturing outside.

oon after India threatened it won’t grant visas to any Amazon official if the company did not withdraw an Indian flagthemed doormat from its Canadian platform, the e-commerce website removed the article from the online marketplace, a media report said. An Amazon spokesman at its headquarters in Seattle contacted The Washington Post to say that the doormat was no longer for sale on its website. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately,” Swaraj said in a tweet. “If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official. ‘Tackle the issue of women marrying into NRI families’ IANS, BENGALURU

H

ighlighting the vulnerabilities of Indian women marrying into NRI families, President Pranab Mukherjee said that Indian community organizations abroad can most effectively address their concerns even as the government and its agencies deal with the issue. “I would also like to flag the concerns of women and girls in India marrying into NRI families. Even as the government and its agencies deal with this issue, the concerns of this particular section can be most effectively addressed by the local community organizations,” the President said.

The President was delivering the valedictory address during the conferment of the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya

Samman’ at the 14th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) held on January 7-9.

Speaking on the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, Mukherjee said, “It was indeed an honor for me to have conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman on 30 members of the diaspora just a while back. I congratulate each one of you for your contributions to your countries of origin and India.” Highlighting the contribution of the Non-resident Indians working in the Gulf region and South East Asia, he said, “They are Indian citizens who migrate for employment as low-skilled and semi-skilled labour. They toil hard day and night, and save to send the fruits of their labour as remittances to India, to maintain their families back home.”

“These remittances are the largest by any diaspora, at 12 per cent of the total global remittances, amounting to $69 billion in 2015,” the President pointed out. The President appreciated the overseas Indians’ ability to assimilate and maintain their identity among other cultures. He also lauded their immense contribution to their adopted lands through dedication and hard work. The President said, “As a people exposed to the best of western technology and yet having their civilisational moorings in the ageless and eternal ethos of India, you are doubly blessed.”

India woos young diaspora Ministers call them to play an important role in building a modern and prosperous India, saying they have taken steps to facilitate this process by simplifying rules and procedures IANS, BENGALURU

I

ndia wooed its young diaspora to be part of its growth story by tapping emerging opportunities in the country. “India offers huge opportunities to be part of its growth story and realize your dreams through development programs,” Minister of State for External Affairs, Gen V.K. Singh (retd.) told the diaspora on the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. He said the Smart Cities Mission, Digital India, Skill India, Start-Up India and Swacch Bharat campaign were the Narendra Modi government’s flagship programmes for building a prosperous, skilful, enterprising, clean and futuristic country. Asserting that global good could not be achieved by one country alone, as the challenges were complicated, he said the Indian diaspora had to strengthen the bridges that connect it with the motherland. “You can transform your lives and that of India through four Ts — talent, technology, training and team work — as the Prime Minister’s vision will make India the skill capital of the world by 2022,” the minister told about 400 young members of the Indian diaspora.

Echoing Singh’s call, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel invited the young diaspora to take up social projects as part of its contribution to the motherland. “We will encourage the young diaspora to undertake social pro-

jects in the country,” he said in a keynote address on the ‘Role of Diaspora in the Transformation of India’. Goel said his ministry would open single-window clearance to allow the diaspora implement social projects in any state or city at the earliest.

“The young diaspora can play an important role in building a modern and prosperous India. We have taken steps to facilitate this process by simplifying rules and procedures for the overseas Indians,” he said. Earlier in the day, the three-day international event got off to a

colorful start at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre on the city outskirts, with the young diaspora connecting with their motherland. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally inaugurate the event and deliver the keynote address in the presence of Portugal Prime Minister Antonio Costa, the chief guest. Suriname Vice President Michael Ashwin Adhin also addressed the gathering on the occasion. Being held for the first time in Karnataka, the mega event has drawn about 1,800 NRIs from 72 countries. The Pravasi Divas had traditionally been held on January 9 to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi as ‘Pravasi’ from South Africa to India over a century ago (1915). President Pranab Mukherjee will confer Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards and deliver the valedictory address this week. Currently, there are 3.12 crore overseas Indians globally, of which 1.34 crore are Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and 1.7 crore NRIs.

Modi asks diaspora to first develop India Modi exhorted the diaspora to participate in the government's flagship programmes like Digital India IANS, BENGALURU

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Indian diaspora to first develop India by investing and contributing its expertise in the land of its origin. "To me, FDI means First Develop India through Foreign Direct Investment, whose norms have been fully liberalized for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and made on par with domestic firms for availing same benefits," Modi told the the 14th

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. Inaugurating the three-day mega event, Modi exhorted the diaspora to participate in the government's flagship programmes like Digital India, Make In India, Start-up India, Swacch Bharat (Clean India) and Namami Gange (Clean Ganga) for the country's all-round development. "Diaspora can contribute to India by sparing their time and energy on implementing our flagship programmes and stay connected," said Modi during a 40-minute special address in Hindi and English.

Asserting that engaging with the overseas Indian community was a priority area for him, the Prime Minister said the government was trying to convert 'brain drain' into 'brain gain' by inviting the diaspora to contribute their mite in making India strong and self-reliant. "Brain drain has been considered a loss for the country as Indians went abroad seeking jobs and better life. But for me and my government, such a movement is not a brain drain but brain gain as they can help us in the development," noted Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government would soon launch a skill development program. (Photo: IANS)

For young Indians seeking jobs abroad, Modi said his government would soon launch a skill development program. Modi also appealed to all persons of Indian origin living the world over to convert their PIO cards into Overseas Citizen of

India (OCI) card at the earliest. "We are working on new procedures to ensure all descendants of Indians, especially their fourth and fifth generations living in Fiji, Suriname, Guyana and Caribbean states to become eligible for OCI cards," Modi said.

Dhoni as the limited overs team skipper recently after the Ranchi-born cricketer stepped down. He will lead India in the first of the three-match ODI series against England. “It is quite surreal. I never thought this day is going to come to my life. When I came to the team, I was always looking to per-

Kohli said he never thought he would get this huge honor of leading the country. “I feel everything is God sent. AAP Overseas’ social media campaign a hit

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Dr. Kumar Vishwas, Convener, AAP Overseas, announced the formal structure of the Overseas team of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to connect Indians abroad to this political revolution in June and an integral part of it was the social media team. AAP Overseas has been able to connect thousands of Indians settled abroad with the fight against corruption in India started by AAP. And his trust in this team was affirmed when within 20 days of the announcement, AAP Overseas created a huge buzz on social media (SM) with its anti-drug campaign worldwide called #KickNasha What crowned this initial achievement was the ‘#TalktoAK’ Campaign which not only trended top in India but was 4th worldwide in twitter trends. Following highly successful campaigns like #AKinGujrat, etc . the AAP Overseas social media team is the trendsetter now on twitter and other SM platforms. AAP Overseas is not only spreading the work done by the party in India but is also responsible for making viral the activities of its different chapters in different countries all over the world. With worldwide trends like #AAPUK4Punjab, #AAPCanadaYouth etc. it is the frontrunner in global trends leaving far behind social media teams of other political parties trying to achieve even one-tenth of the success of AAP Overseas.

C

AAP USA Convener Pradeep Sundriyal with San Francisco Bay Area Team

This team really showed its mettle with back-to-back campaigns against the highly-criticized demonetization scheme of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The way they brought out the loopholes of the scheme right in its initial stages made their trends worldwide drawing media attention to what was intrinsically wrong with this drastic step. And now it’s crowning glory are the Chalo Punjab and Calling Campaign where Indians settled abroad are being motivated to return to India and cCampaign to save Punjab or to call and motivate the voters for AAP if they cannot be physically present in Punjab. The US team is leading multiple campaigns and with focus on the recentlyannounced elections, the US AAP Overseas support group has also been expended. Pradeep Sundriyal, convenor of AAP

Ajeet Singh

US, said that with this expansion, AAP US support group has over 20 chapters across the US. The AAP US team has launched a unique campaign, ‘Halka Aapnow (Adopt a constituency)’ for Punjab.

In this campaign, overseas Indian citizens are encouraged to adopt MLA constituencies in Punjab. So far, more than 80 working groups are working actively in their respective adopted constituencies. According to Shail Gautam (IacShail), social media Head, AAP Overseas, “The strength of our team is the hundreds of volunteers who are passionate about bringing a change in the political system of their motherland even though they may be hundreds of miles away from it. ‘They selflessly spend their time and money for this political revolution and their idealism and enthusiasm overwhelmingly surpasses the paid machinery of our rivals. We owe our success to these dedicated faceless volunteers all around the world and their zeal to see a better India. According to Ajeet Singh, AAP convener (Chicago IL), AAP will win Panjab.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, text of which was released to the media, Panneerselvam said Jallikattu is an integral part of Pongal festivities and the festival holds great importance for the people of Tamil Nadu. “Considering the urgency, the Government of India should consider promulgating an Ordinance removing the legal impediments enabling the conduct of Jallikattu during Pongal, 2017,” he wrote to the Prime Minister. It would be celebrated on January 14. Meanwhile, the Union Environment Minister Anil Dave said he hopes the Supreme Court will

uphold people’s sentiments over Jallikattu, saying it is a “non-violent” and “friendly” game. The minister’s remark came amid growing demands for holding the bull-taming sport this year on the occasion of Pongal on January 14. Jallikattu is an integral part of the Pongal festivities. Political parties have been pressing the central and Tamil Nadu governments to take steps to let people hold the sport. Protests have been held in the state in support of the sport. “There is no violence in this game. It is only a tradition and people are emotionally attached to it. I hope the court will uphold the sentiments of the society,” Dave said. In Jallikattu, a bull vaulter is expected to hang on to the bull’s hump for a stipulated distance or for a minimum of three jumps made by the bull. The Supreme Court in May 2014 banned Jallikattu. The court held that bulls cannot be used as performing animals either for Jallikattu or for bullock cart races.

In the film, Chiranjeevi plays dual roles and the story revolves around the plight of farmers against urbanization. “The film would change the perception urban people have about farmers. Speaking at the first edition of India Today Conclave South here, he said: “When you’re shooting, nobody quite knows how the project will come out. It’s during post-production you see the film take shape with visual effects and music. Therefore, I’m eagerly looking forward to start post-production.” The second part in the franchise is slated for release on April 28, and Rajamouli said sleepless nights are yet to begin. “It’s going to get hectic. No matter how challenging it might get, I don’t like to compromise on my vision. I’m well aware that I have put my actors in difficult positions because of my vision but when they see I work for the betterment of the product, they understand the pain I put them through,” he said. Adacia Chambers, 26, was sentenced in Payne County District Court after pleading no contest to the four counts of second-degree murder and 39 counts of assault and battery. Chambers, who showed sympathy to the victims of the crash, was set to stand trial January 10, a process that could have gone on for a month due to a laundry list of witnesses, first-responders and detectives. According to Chambers’ attorney Tony Coleman, she took the plea to avoid putting the victims’ families through a lengthy trial. Prosecutors alleged that Chambers purposely steered her car around a police barricade and sped up before she ploughed into the crowd watching the parade before Oklahoma State’s game against the University of Kansas. Among the victims was Indian M.B.A. student Nikita Nakal, 23, who was studying at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond Nakal had arrived at UCO just three months before the horrific incident. UCO Professor Donna Carlon told local media that Nakal held a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mumbai University and was intending to pursue a career as a financial analyst in India after obtaining her M.B.A. Other victims included a married couple, Bonnie Jean Stone and Marvin Lyle Stone, both 65, and 2-year-old Nash Lucas.

Indian student in startup contest BY A STAFF WRITER OLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Indian American high school student Manshu Sharma is among the contenders for the top prize in a global competition for startups. Sharma, 17, co-founded the app MeetHere in the summer of 2016 with three high school students from Texas, California and Florida. Sharma met his co-founders in July at the University of Pennsylvania’s Management and Technology Summer Institute and came up with the startup idea and developed a business plan and prototype around it. If Sharma and the MeetHere founders win the top prize of the virtual Start-up Open, they get a free trip in March to Johannesburg, South Africa, to make a presentation to the Global Entrepreneurship Congress.

Manshu Sharma

MeetHere was the lone US finalist from the 1,017 businesses coming from 101 countries in the competition. Sharma, originally from India, now lives in Collegeville, Pa., with his parents.

The idea for helping friends meet up more easily has been kicking around in his head for a while now. The team launched the free MeetHere app on July 28, 2016, on Google Play for Android devices, and it has been downloaded 50 to 250 times a day, Sharma said. An iOS version is expected soon. The app’s target market is high school kids and young people in their 20s. Sharma added in the report the hope would be to expand to professionals who would use it to meet clients. An additional goal Sharma has with the app is to rid the sentiment that the Internet and mobile phones are drifting people apart. MeetHere is a way for technology to help bring people together, he said in the report. The app was considered by CNBC as one of the world’s 10 hottest startups of 2016.

Macy’s to shut stores amid falling sales

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY- Macy’s says it is eliminating more than 10,000 jobs and plans to move forward with 68 store closures after a disappointing holiday shopping season. The department store chain also lowered its full-year earnings forecast. The retailer said on January 4 that sales at its established stores fell 2.1 percent in November and December compared to the same period last year. Macy’s Inc. pointed to changing consumer behavior and said its performance reflects the challenges that are facing much of the retail industry. The company said the 68 store closures, which span the nation, are part of the 100 closings it announced in August. Of the 68, three were closed by the middle of 2016, 63 will close in the spring and two will be closed by the middle of 2017. Macy’s is selling or has sold three other locations, but is leasing the properties back and will keep operating those stores. Some employees may be offered positions at nearby stores, but Macy’s estimates that 3,900

This will lead to the reduction of 6,200 jobs. The moves are estimated to save $550 million annually. Overall, Macy’s said, the job reductions represent about 7 percent of its workforce. The company, which owns the Macy’s and

Bloomingdale’s brands, has been struggling with declining traffic in its stores, where the bulk of its business is still conducted. It said it is closing stores that are “unproductive or are no longer robust shopping destinations” as well as selling those with highly valued real estate. It plans to invest some of its savings in growing its digital business.

BY A STAFF WRITER RANGE, NJ -- FBI agents raided Orange City Hall on January 11 morning and the building was shut down as the investigation into alleged fraud and money laundering continues to unfold. A sign on the front door said the building would be closed temporarily “due to unforeseen circumstances.” A federal agent was guarding the doorway and would not let reporters enter the building. The FBI confirmed it is conducting official business at city hall, but would not provide any further details. An FBI official was seen taking photographs of the municipal building’s exterior. At least four unmarked federal law enforcement vehicles were in the city hall employee parking lot. It was not immediately clear what documents the agents were seeking. The raid follows a similar one in July at the city’s library. In two past search warrants obtained by NJ Advance Media, the FBI seized documents relating to the library’s hiring of certain contractors, use of grant money and the city’s purchase of a YWCA building on Main Street, among other things.

Change routine, lose weight

Starch in bananas, potatoes is good

A study reveals that the human body has an internal clock called circadian clock, thus eating earlier in the day may positively influence a person’s health IANS, NEW YORK

S

imply changing your eating schedule like taking the last meal of the day by the midafternoon can help in burning fat and lose weight, a new research has suggested. The study that tested early time-restricted feeding (eTRF) on humans found that this meal-timing strategy reduced swings in hunger and altered fat and carbohydrateburning patterns, which may help with losing weight. With eTRF, people eat their last meal by the mid-afternoon and do not eat again until breakfast the next morning. “Eating only during a much smaller window of time than people are typically used to, may help with weight loss,” said one of the

researchers Courtney Peterson, Associate Professor at University of Alabama at Birmingham in the US. The human body has an internal clock, and many aspects of metabolism are at their optimal functioning

High-fiber cuts gout inflammation NEW YORK: Consuming a high-fiber diet may significantly induce the action of gut bacteria to help reduce inflammation associated with the gout and possibly help the treatment of arthritis, researchers have found. Gout is a metabolic disease in which monosodium urate crystals of uric acid — a waste product in the blood — form in the body’s tissues or joints, causing inflammation and pain. The study found that the action of gut bacteria, influenced by different

Salt treatment to kill airborne virus

types of food, can affect inflammation in the body. Diets that are high in fiber trigger bacteria in the gut to produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which induce neutrophil apoptosis and the resolution of inflammation. The findings may have important implications for the treatment of gout, and possibly for the treatment of arthritis, the researchers said. They added what we eat plays a determinant role in our capacity to fine tune the inflammatory response.

in the morning. Therefore, eating in alignment with the body’s circadian clock by eating earlier in the day may positively influence health. Previous animal studies showed

that early time-restricted feeding helped rodents burn more fat. During the current study, Peterson and her colleagues followed a small group of men and women with excess weight over four days of eating between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and four days of eating between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Participants tried both eating schedules, ate the same number of calories both times and completed all testing under supervision. Researchers found that, although eTRF did not affect how many total calories participants burned, it reduced daily hunger swings and increased fat burning during several hours at night. It also improved metabolic flexibility, which is the body’s ability to switch between burning carbohydrates and burning fats.

Dialysis patients risk early death IANS, LONDON

K

idney failure patients on dialysis tend to have altered blood clots which increases their risk of dying prematurely, especially from cardiovascular causes, according to a study. The study found that these patients tended to have a denser clot structure than individuals without kidney disease. Their blood has altered coagulation properties, which increases their

risk of both bleeding and thrombotic events such as stroke, as well as an increased risk of dying from other causes, the researchers said. In addition, analysing the blood of 171 chronic hemodialysis patients, the team found that dialysis patients’ fibrinogen — a protein that is converted into fibrin during blood clot formation — exhibited certain modifications that were different from fibrinogen from the patients without any kidney disease.

“Whether better dialysis treatment or medication could improve clot structure needs to be investigated in future studies,” said Katharina Schutt from RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

TORONTO: Researchers have developed a special salt treatment that can make common surgical masks capable of trapping and killing airborne viruses. “Surgical masks were originally designed to protect the wearer from infectious droplets in clinical settings, but it does not help much to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases such as SARS or MERS or influenza,” said Hyo-Jick Choi, Professor, University of Alberta, Canada.

LONDON: Consuming foods such as bananas, potatoes, grains and legumes that are rich in resistant starch may help check blood sugar, enhance satiety as well as improve gut health, a study has found. Resistant starch is a form of starch that is not digested in the small intestine and is therefore considered a type of dietary fibre. “We know that adequate fibre intake — at least 30 grams per day — is important for achieving a healthy, balanced diet, which reduces the risk of developing a range of chronic diseases,” said Stacey Lockyer, Nutrition Scientist at British Nutrition Foundation, a Britain-based charity. —IANS

ith winter being the best time to increase food intake, dieticians have urged children to focus more on fruits and vegetables to supplement body nutrition, which is hardly the case during summer. According to them, the increased intake of walnuts can be extremely helpful for dementia patients. Vitamin A is necessary for eyesight and carrot has plenty of it. “Carrot also enhances blood flow to the eyes to aid in better functioning,” said Nidhi Dhawan, dietician at city-based Saroj Super Specialty Hospital. “The connection between celery and bones is quite common. helps people with deprived sodium in their bones, replenishing the sodium needs. Avocados are one of them too - they take exactly nine

months to ripen and are helpful in targeting health and functioning of uterus and cervix. They help women to balance hormones, shed

unwanted birth weight, and deter cervical cancers,” said Dhawan. Quoting established researches, Dhawan said that tomatoes are essential for pure heart and blood. “Kidney beans as the name suggests is helpful in healing and maintaining kidney functioning,” said Anuradha Lalwani, dietician with Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. “Fruits are also must for women and their development includes avocado, olives and all citrus fruits. Olives assist in the health and functioning of ovaries. Citrus fruits like orange and grapefruit help with the movement of the lymph in and out of the breasts and resemble the shape of mammary glands in females,” said Lalwani.

No good air to breath

While air pollution kills more than 5.5 million people prematurely every year, India and China together account for 55 percent of these deaths

sources of biomass for cooking and heating. Millions of families are regularly exposed to high levels of particulate matter in their own homes. “India needs a threepronged mitigation approach to address industrial coal burning,

open burning for agriculture, and household air pollution sources,” said one of the researchers Chandra Venkataraman, professor at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, in Mumbai. In China, burning coal is the biggest contributor to poor air quality. Outdoor air pollution from coal alone caused an estimated 366,000 deaths in China in 2013, Qiao Ma, a doctoral student at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, noted. She found that air pollution will cause anywhere from 990,000 to 1.3 million premature deaths in 2030 unless even more ambitious targets are introduced. “Our study highlights the urgent need for even more aggressive strategies to reduce emissions from coal and from other sectors,” Ma said.

To protect men against osteoporosis, researchers aimed to understand the connection between boneloading exercise during adolescence and young adulthood when the skeleton is still growing and bone mass in middle age.

The international team of researchers from India, China, Canada and the US estimated that despite efforts to limit future emissions, the number of premature deaths linked to air pollution will climb over the next two decades unless more aggressive targets are set. Asthma may delay pregnancy: Study LONDON: Asthma has been linked with a prolonged time to pregnancy and a decreased birth rate, says a recent study. The median total time to pregnancy was 32.2 months in nonasthmatic women and 55.6 months in those with asthma, the study revealed.

Women with asthma also had fewer successful conceptions, the researchers said adding that the trend was more apparent as the women got older. Only 39.6 percent asthmatic women achieved pregnancy compared with 60.4 percent in the women without asthma, the findings revealed. “This finding in a clinical trial setting adds new weight to the epidemiological evidence suggesting a link between asthma and fertility. We have seen here that asthma seems to have a negative influence on fertility as it increases time to pregnancy and even more so with age,” said lead author, Elisabeth Juul Gade. The study adds to previous studies that have identified a link between asthma and fertility. As many as 96 women in the study had either an existing doctor’s diagnosis of asthma or were diagnosed with asthma when they entered the study, the researchers revealed. The researchers monitored the women during their fertility treatment for a minimum of 12 months, until they successful pregnancy.

Beetroot juice improves endurance, blood pressure in elderly IANS, NEW YORK

A

daily dose of beetroot juice may significantly improve exercise endurance and blood pressure in elderly patients with the heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HfpEF) syndrome, a new study says. While the daily dose of beetroot juice improved aerobic endurance by 24 percent, it significantly reduced blood pressure by 5-10 mmHg, the

study said. “These initial findings suggest that one week of daily beetroot juice could be a potential therapeutic option to improve aerobic endurance in patients with HfpEF, which has implications for improving everyday activities and quality of life,” said Dalane Kitzman, professor at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, US. HfpEF, a dominant form of heart failure, occurring pri-

marily in older women reflects how the left ventricle of the heart pumps with each beat, the researchers said. Primary symptoms of HFPEF includes shortness of breath and fatigue with normal amounts of exertion, partly due to non-cardiac factors that reduce oxygen delivery to active skeletal muscles. The findings are detailed in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology-Heart Failure.
