Hillary vs the rest

IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he U.S. presidential race took off with Hillary Clinton finally jumping into the fray with an aura of inevitability, but that analysts suggested may turn out to be the former secretary of state’s biggest handicap. In her second bid to break the glass ceiling and return to the White House, the former first lady chose a low key video message on social media to announce her run on April 12 before heading to Iowa, the state which traditionally kicks off the primaries. The first official event of her 2016 presidential campaign was a roundtable discussion with four students and three educators in an automotive technology classroom at a community college. There she declared her desire to “begin a conversation” with Americans on how she could “be the champion who goes to bat for Americans.” Low key or not, Clinton’s entry has electrified the somewhat somnolent presidential race and generated media attention far and wide, including India, with which she has a long history going back to her first visit as first lady in 1995, unlike any other candidate. As Alyssa Ayres, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations wrote in a recent blog post “First and foremost, she sees India as a crucial part of US strategy in a world increasingly centered on Asia, where, in her words, ‘the future of politics will be decided.’” “As secretary of state her focus on rebalancing U.S. foreign policy toward Asia contained a strong emphasis on expanding ties with India, “ she noted. Within her own Democratic Party, Clinton is miles ahead of her likely rivals - none of whom have officially declared their intention to run. According to Time magazine former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is polling at 1 percent and liberal Senator Bernie Sanders is at 4 percent compared with Clinton’s 66 percent. “Though both are still long shots, they could force her to compete for support from the liberal base, potentially hurting her chances in the general election,” it said. Among the Republicans, she leads former Florida governor Jeb Bush 54 percent to 40 percent in

Who are already ‘in’ the race for 2016?

Obama not ready to endorse Hillary yet

Except Hillary Clinton, none from the Democratic party have officially joined the race for 2016 presidential race. But the Republican field is getting more congested with each passing day. Three of them are already in:

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama is not ready to formally endorse his ex-secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, in her bid for the presidency because it is possible that other hopefuls for the post will appear, including other “friends” of the chief executive. A day after Clinton, who was defeated by Obama in the Democratic primaries of 2008, announced her intention to seek the party’s presidential nomination in 2016, White House spokesperson Josh Earnest on April 13 scuttled rumors about any immediate support she might get from the president, Efe News Service reported. “The two of them Obama and Clinton have become friends, but there are other people who are

Senator Ted Cruz announced his candidacy in March. Best known for his role in the government shutdown of 2013, Cruz is one of the rising young stars and one of the most controversial figures of the Republican Party. He is also known for his scepticism towards the moderate sections of the party and for his outright criticism of the policies of President Barack Obama. Senator Rand Paul declared his candidacy for president on April 12. Son of former Texas congressman and 2012 presidential candidate Ron Paul, the Kentucky senator is known for his libertarian views and support for reduction in foreign aid. Analysts believe that Paul’s left-libertarian leanings may make him the candidate of choice for disaffected free marketers. Senator Marco Rubio from the state of Florida announced his candidacy on April 13. While Rubio was one of eight senators who shepherded a bipartisan immigration reform bill through the Senate, he later voted against funding the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals initiative, aimed at giving relief to undocumented migrants brought to the U.S. as children.

a matchup and with even larger margins over Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Time said. Louisiana’s Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal is still toying with the idea of a presidential run. But potential Republican candidates lost no time attacking Clinton leaving criticism of likely primary rivals within the party for another day. Rubio, 43, the youngest contender in the race so far, took a swipe at Clinton on April 13. “Just yesterday, a leader from yesterday,” he said as cited by CNN, as the crowd erupted in boos, “began a campaign for President by promising to take us back to yesterday. But yesterday is over, and we are never going back.” Kentucky Senator Rand Paul released a video ad critical of Clinton hours before she officially declared her candidacy on April 12 saying she “represents the worst of the Washington machine, the arrogance of power,

corruption and cover-up”. Cruz, another official 2016 GOP candidate, questioned her success as secretary of state saying “Hillary Clinton represents the failed policies of the past”. Bush turned the Clinton debut into a fundraising opportunity

telling his supporters in an email that “Hillary plans to raise $1.7 billion to win the White House ... which is why I’m asking you to give $5 right now” to “stop her”. With hardly any opposition worth the name, Clinton may easily win the Democratic prima-

friends of the president who may decide to enter the race. So the president has not offered up any sort of endorsement at this point,” Earnest told a press conference. However, the spokesperson did not identify exactly who those “friends” might be.

ry, but “she’ll face a battle-tested Republican opponent who will be in tip-top shape to take on the Democrats,” Time suggested. However, her “supporters argue that even without a major primary fight, she’ll be ready too”, it said.

Vaisakhi resolution in US Congress WASHINGTON: Sixteen U.S. lawmakers led by Democrat John Garamendi have introduced a resolution in the U.S. John Garamendi House of Representatives, honoring the Sikh community’s celebration of Vaisakhi. The bipartisan resolution was cosponsored among others by the lone Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera, Democratic co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, one of the largest in Congress with more than 180 members. “America’s founding ideals of freedom of worship, equality, and justice are reflected in the Sikh American community’s celebration of

I have partnered with the community on many issues, including civil liberties, education, and business development,” he said. “Sikhs are an integral part of the American fabric, and we invite our fellow Americans to learn more about their Sikh neighbors by visiting their local gurdwaras and partnering with us on community service projects,” said Rajdeep Singh, senior director of law and policy at the Sikh Coalition. The resolution notes that Sikhism was introduced to the U.S. in the 19th century.

Headley joined LeT ‘full time’ after 9/11 ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

A

Pakistani-American key plotter of the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks has revealed that he decided to join Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) “full time” following the 9/11 attacks in the US. Born Daood Gilani in the US to an American mother and a Pakistani father, David Coleman Headley makes the disclosure in a draft memoir made available to the makers of an “American Terrorist”, a TV documentary telecast this week. Working with LeT, Headley, former drug smuggler turned informant for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, used his US passport to travel to India, scout locations for the plot, film them and

IN BRIEF IS leader al-Baghdadi critically wounded?

LONDON: Head of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was critically wounded in an airstrike in Iraq by the US-led coalition last month, The Guardian reported citing sources. A source in Iraq with connections to the terror group, however, said that the IS leader, whose wounds were initially believed to be life threatening, has since made a slow recovery, but has not resumed day-to-day control of the organization. Baghdadi’s injuries led to urgent meetings of the IS leadership, and plans were made to name a new leader to take over the reins of the organization from Baghdadi in the event of his death. A western diplomat and an Iraqi adviser confirmed that the strike took place on March 18 in the al-Baaj district of Iraq’s Nineveh province. There had been two previous reports in November and December of Baghdadi being wounded, though neither was accurate. The diplomat confirmed that an airstrike on a convoy had taken place that day.

even find a landing site for the plot’s attackers. Writing about his first encounter with Lashkar militants, Headley, who is serving 35 years for his role in the Mumbai attack, describes how he was “very impressed with their dedication to the cause of the liberation of Kashmir from Indian occupation.” Headley’s memoir offers a unique window into his turn toward extremism, his training with LeT and his preparations for an abortive attack on a Danish newspaper for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, according to report by ProPublica and Frontline. In one passage, Headley, who frequently visited Pakistan, writes: “On one of my trips, October 2000, I made my first contact with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), quite by

accident. I attended their annual convection in November. Marking his decision to join Lashkar “full time” following the 9/11 attacks, Headley says that by 2002 the group asked him to take “the Daura Aamma, the basic military training course offered by LeT.” It was one of several training programmes he writes about, the report says noting “by 2005, Lashkar’s plans for Headley are coming into focus.” After the attack, Headley says he was told to “lay low.” Instead, he travelled to Denmark to scout the Jyllands-Posten newspaper for a possible strike. But western intelligence soon learn of the plot, and close in on Headley. He was arrested on October 3 2009 at O’Hare Airport, Chicago on his way back to Pakistan.

Obama submits n-deal with China to Congress IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Barack Obama has submitted to Congress a proposed 30-year agreement on cooperating with China in peaceful uses of nuclear energy. “In my judgement, it meets all applicable statutory requirements and will advance the nonproliferation and other foreign policy interests of the US,” Obama said in a message to Congress issued by the White House this week. The agreement, which permits transfer of material, equipment (including reactors), components, information and technology for nuclear research and nuclear power production, “provides a comprehensive framework for peaceful nuclear cooperation with China based on a mutual commitment to nuclear

nonproliferation,” Obama said. The agreement “will promote, and will not constitute an unreasonable risk to, the common defense and security,” he said, urging Congress to give it “favorable consideration”. Obama noted that China has since the 1980s become a party to several nonproliferation treaties and

conventions and “worked to bring its domestic export control authorities in line with international standards”. China and the US have cooperated on peaceful uses of nuclear energy in the past decades, since the signing of an agreement for this cooperation in 1985, which is to

expire at the end of 2015. The Senate bill gained the mistrust of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who warned that his country was not negotiating with the US Congress. Obama emphasized that “this is not a formal treaty that is being envisioned,” but rather a “political agreement” between Iran and the leaders of the P5+1 countries. The president said that during the nuclear negotiations between now and the June 30 deadline, the nations involved will have to be “creative” when it comes to deciding the complex question of when to free Tehran of international sanctions. Obama said he believed that by “having in reserve the possibility of putting back and applying forceful sanctions in the event of a violation, that goal can be met”.

US Ambassador to India, Richard Verma, had handed over the ‘chadar’ on behalf of President Obama to Haji Chishty in New Delhi last week. “On behalf of the United States government, I

convey greetings of deepest friendship and respect to the community of Dargah Ajmer Sharif and the people of Ajmer,” said a message from Verma which was read out on the occasion. “On this day, the 803rd Annual Urs of Hazrat Khawaja Moinudeen Hasan Chishty, our thoughts are with the community in Ajmer and we give thanks for the work of the Dargah Ajmer Sharif and its legacy of striving for understanding, peace, and respect between all faiths and peoples of the world,” the message said. Quoting President Obama, it added: “Whatever our beliefs, whatever our traditions, we must seek to be instruments of peace, and bringing light where there is darkness, and sowing love where there is hatred.”

Farmer kills self at AAP rally A distressed farmer hangs himself from a tree at Jantar Mantar at a mass meeting called by AAP; incident triggers political drama and mud-slinging IANS, NEW DELHI

A

farmer from Rajasthan, his crops ruined by rains, hanged himself from a tree at an AAP rally here on April 22 just before Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal addressed thousands against the controversial land ordinance. The dramatic death of Gajendra Singh, a father of three, immediately turned into a political drama, with the Aam Aadmi Party blaming Delhi Police and BJP and Congress attacking Kejriwal and the AAP. Shortly after doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital declared the man dead, Home Minister Rajnath Singh told Delhi Police, which

reports to him, to hold an inquiry into the death. The sensational incident took place at Jantar Mantar in the heart of the city where thousands from Delhi and other states had turned up to denounce the land bill at a mass meeting called by the AAP. Three AAP activists who saw the man hanging climbed the tree and tried to bring him down. But as they

untied the scarf the farmer had tied to a tree branch to hang himself, his body fell with a loud thud. As chaos gripped the venue, an IANS reporter at the site saw that the man was barely breathing. His tongue was protruding. One of the AAP activists who had climbed the tree fainted on the branch. Others then clambered up and brought him down after sprin-

kling water on his face. A suicide note in Hindi found at the spot said the man was taking his life because untimely rains had destroyed his crops and ruined him. He ended the note with “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Rajasthan”. As emotionally charged AAP activists raised anti-police slogans, the man was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he

was declared dead. Kejriwal was told of the incident — it wasn’t clear then whether the man was alive or dead — by some volunteers on the dias. Thinking that the man was probably alive, the chief minister said he would call on him affer the rally. After a hard-hitting speech in which he accused the Narendra Modi government of trying to snatch farmers’ land to give it to the “super rich”, Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia drove to the hospital. By then, Delhi Congress leader Ajay Maken had visited the hospital and remarked that both the AAP and police should have taken steps to avoid the suicide. At his party office, BJP spokesman Sambit Patra asked: “Why didn’t the AAP leaders stop the farmer from committing suicide?” Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi also visited the hospital. He later told the media: “We are with the farmer’s family. We will help them.” Earlier, Kejriwal vowed to organize farmers all over the country on the issue. Modi had betrayed the trust of the farmers after taking their vote and forming a government, Kejriwal told the protesters.

Pak boat with `6 bn narcotics seized Rahul resurfaces, shows combative side IANS, MUMBAI/AHMEDABAD

NEW DELHI: A combative Rahul Gandhi mounted his second successive attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi since returning from leave of absence, accusing his “suit boot” and “acche din” government of working for corporates and forgetting farmers. Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, however, rubbished the Congress vice-president’s allegations, reminding him that it was due to the difference in its “words and deeds” in the past that his party was today sitting in the opposition. Attacking the Modi government on issues concerning farmers in his over 20-minute speech in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on agrarian situation in the country, Rahul Gandhi said “acche-din government has failed the country”. He advised Modi to visit the farmers to empathize with them in their distress caused by loss of crops due to unseasonal rains. Earlier in the day, the government tabled the re-promulgated land ordinance in the house amid protests. The Congress and Trinamool Congress staged a walkout over the issue. Congress president Sonia Gandhi later in the day met farmers at her residence to listen to their concerns about the new land bill.

As she was not present in the Lok Sabha when Rahul Gandhi spoke, Sonia Gandhi later said she was told he gave a good speech. Rahul Gandhi, who took part in the discussion for the first time in this budget session, spoke in the tone and tenor of a combative leader to attack the Modi government, as he did at the farmers’ rally at Ramlila Ground here on Sunday. Though Rahul Gandhi’s party colleagues sought to shield him from repeated interruptions from Bharatiya Janata Party members, he stood up and countered the barbs thrown at him with his arguments. Rahul Gandhi made repeated attacks on the government, saying it was “hurting” about 60 percent of the people who were dependent on agriculture.

ndian defense agencies have seized a boat with eight Pakistanis on board and carrying narcotics worth around `6 billion ($95 m), in the Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast on April 20. The vessel, fitted with sophisticated communication systems, was intercepted in international waters in a joint operation by the Indian Navy (IN) and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The eight Pakistani nationals and the boat — the origin and destination of which were not disclosed — are being taken to Porbandar port in

Gujarat for further investigations by law enforcement officials, Intelligence Bureau personnel, Indian Navy and ICG. “The initial investi-

gations by ICG Sangram have led to recovery of 232 packets of narcotics, satellite communication phones and Global Positioning Systems.

Farmed land, food per person declined over 25 years SAUMYA TEWARI, NEW DELHI

T

he land available for farming in India, already under decline, is feared to drop further with the BJP-led government trying to push through a controversial bill that is being criticized in the present format by a host of opposition parties, led by the Congress. The most controversial change proposed is the exemption of five categories of projects — industrial corridors, public-private partnership projects, rural infrastructure, public housing and defense projects —

from getting the consent of 70 percent farmers of the area. This is worrisome since cultivated land on India’s farms declined 15 percent over the past 25 years, according to government data

analysed by IndiaSpend, reducing foodgrain production and portending new pressures as more land is set to be acquired for industries. While the net sown area includes orchards and crops, the cultivated area covers only crops. Land sown with crops declined from nearly 87 percent in 1987-88 to 72 percent in 2011-12. Reasons for the decline in cultivated land include a drop in households owning land in rural India and a decline in the proportion of households dependent on manual labour and farming, says a study.

Pak-China bolster bilateral ties

China plans $45 bn investments in Pakistan, signs 51 MoUs during President Xi Jinping’s Pak visit IANS, ISLAMABAD

P

akistan and China on April 20 signed 51 agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for cooperation in diverse fields. Chinese President Xi Jinping also unveiled a $45-billion investment plan that can help Pakistan end its chronic energy crisis and transform it into a regional economic hub. Xi, who arrived in Pakistan on April 21 on a two-day visit, and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif witnessed the signing of the agreements in Islamabad. The two leaders also unveiled plaques of eight projects to be undertaken in Pakistan with Chinese assistance. The projects and agreements relate to China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, research and technology, education and other fields. The prime minister said the agreements and MoUs signed by the two countries have sound financial and technical backing. He reaffirmed that friendship with China was the cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy. He said there were strong public sentiments driving the two countries’ relations, which provide a sound basis for their strength. Sharif said the most prominent hallmark of Pakistan-China relationship was consistency and resilience, irrespective of political developments, changes in the two countries and major regional and international developments. Relations between the two are based on shared ideals and principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit and respect, he said. In his remarks, President Xi said the main objective of his visit was to further cement and give new boost to the strategic partnership

A Decade of Manufacturing in the offing? It is urgently required to rectify the mismatch between the jobs on offer and the education one receives to make ‘Make in India’ a success AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI

T

he government’s manufacturing focus is evident. On the recent threecountry foreign visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Make in India campaign received a fillip. India was also the partner country at Hannover Messe. However, skeptics immediately pointed out India’s decision to buy 36 Rafale fighters in from France raises concerns over Make in India. It led to questioning the validity of the initiative. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who briefly was the defense minister, responded by saying that Make in India can fabricate Rafale jets after 20 years but that doesn’t mean one keeps the forces ill-equipped for the next 20 years. Last week also saw Ford announcing its $2.5 billion investment in Mexico, part of which is explained by the cost competitiveness of the country in terms of the hourly labor wage differential as compared to countries like the U.S. itself and

Canada. The most recent (2012) figures for Mexico (according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics) were $6 compared to $36 and $37 for U.S. and Canada respectively. The figure for India was $ 1.46 in 2010, the latest year for which data is available. This is lower than China ($1.74 in 2009) and this is where there is a window of opportunity for Make in India. The following six points are critical for enabling and ensuring the manufacturing ecosystem grows in India: First, instilling a sense of pride and ownership among people who work in the manufacturing sector. At times, people in production and manufacturing jobs find it extremely demoralizing considering the incentives they are offered within their specific industry. Contrast a manufacturing worker in India with one outside of India or with a service worker. Even people doing very basic production outside of India are motivated and their morale is high. It is true for Indian services industry as

well. In India, there is a high attrition rate in manufacturing and people want to move to greener pastures as job satisfaction is often

Improvement in basic infrastructure over medium and long- term will be instrumental in increasing the speed of doing business

missing. It is true for even formal factory sector and not just the informal clusters where there are a large number of contractual workers. If a proper sense of pride is instilled, it often leads to quality and standards being followed that can make industries export competitive. Secondly, closely related to the issue of incentives and remuneration is the issue of skills. India has a lot of competition but a large fraction of the workforce is semiskilled/

unskilled. It is urgently required to rectify the mismatch between the jobs that are on offer and the education one receives. Improvement in terms of basic infrastructure over the medium- and long-term will again be instrumental in increasing the speed of doing business. Bettering the connectivity with ports, improvements in our archaic railway network, expansion of highways, as well as better power supply, will all aid in turning Make in India into a grand success.

40 years after Aryabhata: Nothing too far for India VENKATACHARI JAGANNATHAN, CHENNAI

T

he year 2015 and the month April are significant for the Indian space programme. It was in April forty years ago (April 19, 1975) that India’s first satellite Aryabhatta weighing 358 kg was launched successfully by a Russian rocket. Interestingly, India has marched ahead in satellite building capability to roll out communication spacecraft weighing three tonnes and has also sent out satellites to orbit moon and mars. It was again in the month of April but in 2001 (April 18, 2001), that the first development flight of India’s heavy rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket was launched. However the development of the GSLV rocket that can put into

orbit heavier satellites lagged. Two successive failures of GSLV rockets had put the project behind by several years. “During those days infrastructure was not available and we used what was available. In Bangalore we even converted a toilet into

a data receiving center for our first satellite Aryabhata,” U.R. Rao, former chairman of ISRO recalled. “Starting from the scratch was the challenge before us while we began the Aryabhata project. Majority of the team members were

new to this field. The time given was just two and half years so that it could be flown in a Russian rocket. Building a clean room, thermo vacuum room and other facilities were all new,” recalled Rao. According to him, the choice of building the satellite center was between Bangalore and Hyderabad. “However Bangalore had some facilities like industrial sheds. We took six such sheds each measuring around 5,000 sq.ft,” Rao said. The Aryabhata satellite project

was initially pegged at `30 million but cost a little more. “Many of the techniques we used in those days in building the satellites are still followed by ISRO now,” Rao said. Success started smiling at ISRO from INSAT-1B onwards which according to Rao ushered in the communication revolution in India. There was no looking back for the space agency on the satellite side. India’s high point in its space odyssey was its moon and mars mission. While it is normal to compare ISRO’s achievement in satellite and rocket technologies, space scientists said both cannot be compared. “Rockets and satellites cannot be compared. While both may belong to the family of space technology, comparing both is like comparing apples and oranges.”

IN BRIEF Alabama cop pleads not guilty to assaulting Indian grandfather WASHINGTON: A former Alabama police officer has pleaded not guilty to charges of using “unreasonable force” against an Indian grandfather who was left partially paralysed after being slammed face-first to the ground. An unarmed Sureshbhai Patel, 57, who does not speak English, was allegedly assaulted by Eric Parker Feb 6 while he was taking a morning walk in front of his son’s house in a Madison, Alabama suburb. Parker, 26, appeared before US Magistrate Harwell Davis in federal court in Huntsville Tuesday along with his attorney Robert Tuten, who told the court Parker was pleading not guilty, according to AL.com. Davis ordered a $5,000 bond for Parker. He faces a felony charge carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The federal case has been set for June 1 trial. Parker is facing a federal charge of “deprivation of rights under color of law,” which US Attorney Joyce White Vance said includes the right to be free from “unreasonable force.” He has also pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge in Limestone County. That will be handled in a separate court appearance next month.

gang originating among immigrants from the predominantly Catholic nation of El Salvador and active in the US. The 11CBS network in DallasFort Worth area reported that a temple board member, Krishna Singh, said mandir members discovered the graffiti. “That was a big shock, really,” the network quoted her as saying. “It makes me sad inside,” a nine-

year-old child, Gracie Reed, told 11CBS. “To me, it’s really horrifying because I don’t know who would do this to a church,” the child said referring to the house of worship. Dallas police have sent detectives from their gang unit to investigate the incident, according to WFAA, an ABC network affiliated local station. While the administration of President Barack Obama, who has

criticized India over religious tolerance, and Christian leaders did not react to the Texas vandalism, nonHindu neighbors offered to help the temple. Ted Hoffman, who lives across from the temple, told 11CBS, “We all find it appalling” and the neighbors have offered to help paint over the symbols. The gesture of help from neighbors was welcomed by Hindus. WFAA quoted the temple treasurers Karen Snorton as saying she found the offer reassuring. “They’ve been here so that’s a positive thing that’s come out of all of this,” Snorton said. In a statement, Universal Society of Hinduism president Rajan Zed thanked the neighbors for offering the temple help. To counter such attacks, Zed urged fellow Hindus to educate Americans about Hinduism. “Basics of major world religions should be taught in high schools of the country and first responders should be imparted cultural competency training,” he added.

ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call at the UN for an International Day of Yoga reverberated in the European Parliament, the world’s largest legislative body, this week, with internationally known guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar leading a major yoga event. The event, titled “The Yoga Way,” was organized by the Indian embassy in Brussels in cooperation with the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with India. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s discourse, the interactive question and answer session and the relaxing meditation exercises created a unique buzz among the large audience comprising members of the European Par-

As a curtain raiser event to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on June 21, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was invited to speak on yoga and conduct a meditation session. At the instance of Manjeev Singh Puri, Indian Ambassador to the EU, Belgium and Luxembourg, the event was supported by members of all political groups in the European Parliament. This was perhaps for the first time that any event had found resonance among members of all the political groups in the European Parliament. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was received at the European Parliament by Puri and Members of European Parlia-

A video of Prime Minister Modi’s exhortation at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) for declaration of the International Day of Yoga by the UN started the event. Van Orden, Chairperson of the Delegation for Relations with India, welcomed the guests and said that the delegation was happy to organize yoga in the European Parliament. Puri said that yoga was important for a holistic approach to health and well-being and was one of the many Indian contributions to the world. Bengaluru civic body to split Karnataka legislative assembly passes a bill to split the Bengaluru civic body into two or more corporations, opposition parties protest

IANS, BENGALURU

A

bill to split the Bengaluru civic body into two or more corporations was passed on April 20 in the Karnataka legislative assembly, ignoring protests by opposition parties. “The Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2015, to split the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into two or more corporations has been passed in the assembly for governing the city better,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra told reporters. The ruling Congress convened a special one-day session of the state legislature to amend the law for bifurcating or trifurcating the civic behemoth after Governor Vajubhai Vala returned the ordinance to that effect last week. “As the population of Bengaluru

has increased to over eight million, it has become difficult for the BBMP to administer the city, provide amenities and implement civic schemes to improve the infrastructure,” Jayachandra told the lawmakers in defense of the bill.

Moving the bill earlier, Jayachandra said an experts committee, set up by the state government, had also recommended in its interim report trifurcation of the civic body, which was expanded in 2007 by including seven city municipal councils, one

T THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Police was not engaged in snooping on any legislator, said Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala in a statement. He said the news about police snooping on legislators was baseless. “There have been reports attributed to the ruling UDF convenor P.P. Thankachen stating that he said this while speaking to a TV channel. Thankachen himself has denied this. Moreover, no wing of the police department has done this at all,” said Chennithala. Earlier, Thankachen in an interview to a TV channel had casually mentioned that there is the intelligence wing of the police and it is their job to be on the lookout for any sort of political developments as all governments do this. Thankachen’s remark had created a furore. Soon, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) latched on to his remark and attacked the Oommen Chandy government for engaging in snooping activities. Ever since the Chandy government assumed office after the 2011 assembly polls, it has been precariously placed in the 140-member Kerala assembly and even now it is skating on a wafer thin majority.

he BJP in Goa has demanded the arrest of Karnataka’s higher education minister for making inflammatory speeches over demolition of illegal shanties in Goa, some of them housing Kannadigas, and threatening several thousand Goan IT professionals living in Bengaluru. “He should be arrested immediately and externed for making such statements,” BJP Goa state spokesperson Damodar Naik told reporters at a press conference here. Minister R.V. Deshpande accused the BJP-led Goa government of trampling on the rights of some Kannadiga occupants of the over

town municipal council and 111 surrounding villages to increase its civic wards to 198 from 100. Opposing the bill vehemently, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) members rushed into the well of the house and urged the government to withdraw it, as splitting the BBMP would not serve the purpose it was intended. “It is not necessary to divide the BBMP to provide better civic amenities. The session should have been called to discuss damage to crops owing to unseasonal rains,” Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Jagadish Shettar said. JD-S leader in the house and former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy questioned the government’s intention to split the civic body, whose five-year term is lapsing on April 22 and the Karnataka High Court on March 30 directed the

state Election Commission to hold the civic polls by May 30. “If the state government wants to split the BBMP, why did it suddenly supersede it on April 18 and delayed holding its election? The government should have respected the governor’s decision to reject the ordinance,” Kumaraswamy said. Defending the bill, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recalled that the BJP had advocated dividing the civic body when it was in power from 2008-2013. “Though the BJP manifesto 2013 promised splitting the BBMP, just as the Congress had, it is opposing the bill only for political gain. Our party is not making this move for the fear of elections,” Siddaramaiah said. In the 225-member assembly, including one nominated member, the ruling Congress has 122, the BJP 46, the JD-S 40 and remaining are Independents.

CBI finds nothing to prove graft in 35th National Games THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The preliminary probe by the CBI into the allegations levelled over a massive corruption in the conduct of the 35th National Games in Kerala has nothing substantial to prove, a source said. The source, who did not wish to be identified, told IANS that the probe was based on a complaint filed by CPI-M legislator V. Sivankutty. “We have not been able to find anything to substantiate the allegations for which a CBI probe was sought. Since the Centre has also funded the event, we also looked into that aspect. The final report will be submitted to a court next month,” said the CBI source. The budget of the event was `6.11 billion and the games were held in seven districts of the state

from January 31 to February 14, 2015. Things turned hot for the organizers ever since a section of the media here went hammer and tongs against them after it was found that the event management company selected was a sister concern of the leading regional daily in Kerala. Many reports of alleged corruption surfaced in the media. Following such reports, Sivankutty approached a court, seeking a preliminary Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

‘Commercial success important for survival’ The days when critical success mattered are long gone. Now what matters is box office success, feels actor Nakul HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI

ctor Nakul, who was recently seen in sleeper hit Tamiluku En Ondrai Azhuthavum and has been part of the Tamil industry for over a decade, says critical success doesn’t matter anymore as everybody has become money minded. “Today, I don’t think critical success matters anymore. It has to be commercial success. Producers have become very moolahconscious, especially with the entry of big studios and corporates. When you take all these factors into consideration, you ought to have a good film to survive,” Nakul told

Nikita lands special song in ‘Paayam Puli’ CHENNAI: Kannada actress Nikita Thukral has been roped in for a special folk number in Vishal Krishna Reddy-starrer Tamil actioner Paayam Puli. “We recently shot a special folk number with Nikita. It has come out very well. To shoot the song, a market set was erected,” the film’s director Suseenthiran told IANS. Nikita is most popular for her item number in “Saroja” in Tamil cinema. Also starring Kajal Aggarwal and Aishwarya Dutta, the film features Vishal in the role of a policeman.

IANS. “If a new hero is coming into the market, he has to create an impact with the box office business; otherwise it’s tough to survive. Becoming a hero is easy, but staying one in the top league is extremely tough,” he said. Basking in the success of his latest film, Nakul says he has been waiting since 2009 for a hit. “I

accepted Tamiluku Ena merely as an obligation when the producer of my last film, Naan Rajavaga Pogiren, which didn’t do well, came back to me with an offer. I was touched by his gesture. And when I heard the script, I was blown away and decided I had to do this film,” he said. “I knew there was something about the film that’ll work in our favor but I never anticipated this kind of success, which even got me appreciation from some industry bigwigs such as A.R. Cheating case against Shruti Haasan withdrawn IANS, HYDERABAD

P

icture House Media, a leading production company, on Monday withdrew a cheating case it had filed against Shruti Haasan last month for walking out of one of their upcoming yet-untitled TeluguTamil bilingual projects. “The case was withdrawn after Tamil Film Producers Council (TPFC) and South Indian Film Artists Association (SIAA) intervened and settled the issue amicably,” read a statement. “Shruti is very thankful for the intervention of SIAA on the matter as the lawyer

sided with her cause due to harassment meted out to her. Thanks to the support of the industry bodies, she has also decided to withdraw the defamation claim against the producers for misrepresentation and revealing misleading facts to the media,” Shruti’s spokesperson told IANS. Keeping this issue in mind, TPFC and SIAA said that artistes should work in tandem with the producers and not cause heavy losses to them because of their irresponsible acts. Actress Tamannaah Bhatia has replaced Shruti in the project, which also features Nagarjuna and Karthi.

Kajal, Amala follow Gaurang Shah’s creations CHENNAI: After charming Sonam Kapoor, Vidya Balan, Kirron Kher and a host of other actresses in Bollywood, Gaurang Shah’s creations are now sought by popular southern stars like Kajal Aggarwal and Amala Paul. When Amala Paul wore a green floor length khadi Anarkali, with zardosi embroidery from Shah’s “Chandbali” creation with a Kanjeevaram dupatta at a recent launch, she couldn’t stop her admiration for the handwoven creation and said in a statement: “Love this creation of pure elegance!! You are a true genius Gaurang. Thank you.” What charmed Kajal was Shah’s grey tie-n-dye ikkat Kanjeevaram saree with a traditional yellow border inspired from the 16th century temple art. The sari she wore recently for a

‘Kanchana 2’: A weak film in the franchise

W

ith the Kanchana franchise, which is now about eight years old, Lawrencce had opened the floodgates to several successful horrorcomedies in Tamil cinema. The first two parts worked because it was the beginning of a trend and the audience dug the films, but slowly as filmmakers started milking dry this genre, something innovative was expected and that was missing in Raghava Lawrencce-directed Kanchana 2, the latest installment from the franchise. The movie, which follows a very cliched and dated format of horror

Film: Kanchana 2; Cast: Raghava Lawrencce, Taapse Pannu, Nitya Menen, Jayaprakash and Kovai Sarla; Director: Raghava Lawrencce; Rating: **1/2 template, suffers heavily due to the lack of a good story. Forget great acting, which you really can’t expect from these films as their sole intention is to scare with sound and the ghost element. But we’ve had so many horror films of late; you wish these films offered better thrills! Some of these films have had great

comedy, but slowly the jokes too are failing to keep us entertained. Lately, all horror stories have been mostly about revenge, and sadly they’ve all been loud, over-the-top and extremely passe. There are about five ghosts in Kanchana 2, and Lawrencce gets to play all of them. This only proves that he can play any number of characters sans adding any value to the story. The visual effects are pitiful, and the climatic fight between two ghosts is a bad rip-off of the Hulk versus Superman fights on Youtube. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

‘Mr X’ will make you run to trauma centre Film: Mr X, Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Amyra Dastur, Arunodoy Singh, Director: Vikram Bhatt, Rating: * 1/2

S

o... how bad is it? That’s the question which, those lucky enough not to sit through this newest and perhaps stupidest cockand-bull concoction from the once-illustrious house of Bhatts, would gleefully ask those who are fated to suffer the wages of sins that we unknowingly committed in our previous lives to be punished in this way. Unlike the Bhatts’ last film Khamoshiyan which was unintentionally funny Mr X is not even that. It is punishingly bad. A crime

caper that is likely to qualify as cognizable offense if stretch into, god forbid, a sequel. The best thing about this dreadful film is that Emraan Hashmi is invis-

ible for a part of the playing time. What I did miss was the presence of a script writer who knows the craft of spreading an outlandish idea (man gets swathed in a chemical and

goes invisible) into an engaging comic book yarn. Too stiff limbed to be animated, this is a film that begs to be told to chill. Not one character comes across as anything but cartoonish in the most laughable way possible. The villain played by the once-interesting Arunodoy Singh snarls and grits his teeth scaring no one except himself. Stand-up comedian Tanmay Bhatt is cast as Popo, a good Samaritan with a sister who works in a hospital. The sister rummages the medicine cabinets for antidotes to Hashmi’s chemical radiation. “This will either kill or cure you,” she says flashing a bluish liquid into our face. We’d like to call for help from the nearest trauma centre. — Subhash K. Jha

Doctor shields staff from angry man who shot his wife

EMISON, AL -- Dr. Jayprakash “Jay” Patel may have saved his staff and patients from serious harm from an enraged husband who killed his wife in the doctor’s waiting area. Patel said a woman, later identified by police as 24-year-old Leaj Price, who lived next to Patel’s Jemison Internal Medicine office with her husband, Eric Heath Price, 25, fled to the Indian American’s facility after a fight with her husband. Patel said he was in an examination room in the morning on April 13 when he “heard some screaming” in the main entrance, he told reporters. He found the couple struggling, with the

Dr Jayprakash ‘Jay’ Patel husband gripping the wife’s hand “trying to pull her out” of the office. When Patel and a patient tried to persuade

the man to let the woman go, the man “pulled out a gun” from his pocket, Patel said. The doctor quickly realized — when Price aimed a gun at himself and the other patient — that his priority was to protect the staff and patients, so he herded them into a back area and locked the door. He then heard another scream and then “a pop,” he said. “It was very traumatizing,” he told reporters, thankful that his staff and patients “didn’t witness what happened in the lobby.” Patel, a graduate of Kasturba Medical College Manipal, has worked at his office in Jemison for about 20 years. Eric Price later shot himself in the head. After recovering from his injuries, he was charged by the police with murder on April 14.

OHIO MAN ACCUSED OF PLOT TO ATTACK MILITARY BASE, PRISON

BY A STAFF WRITER

OLUMBUS, OH-- An Ohio man traveled to Syria and trained alongside terrorists, then returned to the US with plans to attack a military base or a prison, according to a federal indictment announced on April 16. Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud, a US citizen originally from Somalia, wanted to “kill three or four American soldiers execution style,” according to the indictment. Attacking the prison was part of a backup plan if that didn’t work, the charges said. The indictment also says Mohamud’s brother, Abdifatah Aden, fought with Jabhat al-Nusrah, a state department-designated terrorist group, until he was killed in battle in Syria in June, 2014. Mohamud, 23, of Columbus was charged with supporting terrorism, supporting the same terrorist group and making a false statement involving international terrorism when he allegedly lied to an Ohio FBI agent by saying he was in Istanbul when authorities said he was in Syria. The government charged Mohamud under the laws most commonly used since the September 11, 2001 attacks to prosecute terror suspects. He faces up to 38 years in

UBA CITY, CA -- Harminder Phagura, an Indian American police officer in Yuba City, has been arrested on federal charges for his alleged involvement in a cocaine trafficking scheme. Phagura (35), an officer with the Yuba City Police Department, was arrested following a criminal complaint accusing him of conspiring to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute and use of a communications facility in narcotics trafficking activity. Gursharan Phagura, 39, was also arrested. The two men are believed to be related. The two men made their first appearance in federal court on April 15. Following the hearing, Phagura was released on $100,000 bond. Gursharan Phagura remains in custody. was trying to recruit him to participate in the plot, according to the indictment. The government also said Mohamud made terrorism-related Facebook posts in 2013. U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican and chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, said the charges highlighted the threat posed by Americans joining extremists overseas then returning home. Events leading to Mohamud’s arrest began around September 2013 when he communicated online with his brother over

plans to also travel to Syria to fight, the indictment said. They later talked about ways Mohamud could support him financially, according to the government. Mohamud told his brother of his desire to “join you in the high ranks as a Mujahid,” or violent jihadist, according to the indictment. Mohamud also told one of his US associates he was happy about his brother’s death and said he “was next and would join Aden soon,” the indictment said. A year ago, Mohamud bought a one-way plane ticket to Athens with a connection in Istanbul, where he got off and didn’t board his next flight, the indictment said. Instead, he ended up in Syria where he received training “including shooting weapons, breaking into houses, explosives, and hand-to-hand combat,” the government said. A cleric then instructed him to return to the US to carry out an act of terrorism, according to the government. In 2012, a Somali immigrant to Columbus who federal prosecutors say plotted to attack a shopping mall was deported to Somalia. Mohamud’s indictment is one of several recent cases involving people in the US, including citizens, accused of traveling overseas to fight in Syria.

plane carrying 75 passengers left O’Hare International Airport on April 22 morning at 9:30 a.m. for Bradley Airport in Connecticut but was forced into an emergency landing--descending 28,000 feet in just five minutes--after the cabin lost pressure mid-flight. SkyWest Flight 5622 landed safely in Buffalo, NY, shortly after 11:30 a.m. Central time. As many as four passengers lost consciousness when the cabin depressurized after a mechanical failure caused the main passenger door to open. The SkyWest plane, an Embraer narrow-body jet, operating as United Express Flight 5622, passed over Michigan and made its rapid descent over Lake Erie to land at Buffalo Niagara International Airport. According to SkyWest officials, the passenger door did not open and the plane was diverted due to one passenger passing out. Government sources said the plane was forced into an emergency landing due to a loss of cabin pressure and several people lost consciousness. SkyWest, headquartered in Utah, flies about 1,700 flights each day and is partnered with several major airlines, including United, Delta and American airlines. Notorious gang vandalizes Texas Hindu temple BY A STAFF WRITER

W

ASHINGTON, DC -- A Hindu temple in Lake Highlands, Texas, was vandalized last week, and images that are sprayed on the temple walls suggest the involvement of the MS-13 or Mara Salvatrucha, a violent outfit with Latino roots in Los Angeles. The temple is looking at increasing security after vandals covered it in graffiti on April 20. The number 666 and an upside-down cross now appear on the door of the North Texas Hindu Mandir. Sheds were tagged and walls splashed with spiteful messages. Words ‘M-S 13’, said to be one of the most notorious street gangs in the western hemisphere, were sprayed on one of the sheds.

The Dallas police sent out detectives with the gang unit who are still searching for suspects. Krishna Singh, a member of the temple’s board, said the temple wanted to add surveillance cameras, better

lighting, and a fence to prevent this from happening again. “The sentiment of the neighborhood is that we all find it appalling,” said Ted Hoffman, who lives across the street from the temple. He said neighbors had offered to help paint over the symbols. Snorton, another neighbor, said: “The disrespect level is very high to me.” The temple of 150 devotees started worshiping in the quiet Old Lake Highlands neighborhood in 2002, and this is the first case of vandalism. This is the third such incident of a Hindu temple being vandalized in the US, this year. Earlier, two temples were vandalized in Washington state in February with words like “Get Out” and “Fear” scrawled on the temple walls.

The delegates at the Second International Hindi Conference held at Rutgers University campus between April 3 and 5 approved the resolution as Dnyaneshwar Mulay, consul general of India in New York, who chaired the event, formally declared it adopted at the concluding session on April 5. Mulay assured the audience that the Government of India would support the establishment of the Hindi center in the US. “Hindi center will become a reality soon where all educational activities regarding Hindi learning, including exchange programs and joint projects with India-based institutions and universities, will take place under one roof,” he said.

Indian temple leader gets 27 years for bank, tax fraud BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- An Indian-American former leader of a now-defunct Hindu Temple in Georgia has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for committing bank and tax fraud, money laundering and using the temple’s income to fund his personal lifestyle. Annamalai Annamalai, 49, also known as Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar, was convicted last August for bank and tax fraud following a two-week jury trial. He was also convicted of bankruptcy fraud offenses in connection with the Hindu Temple’s petition for bankruptcy protection in August 2009. “Annamalai perverted the sacred institution of religion by using it as a vehicle for greed and personal profit,” said acting US Attorney John A Horn. “He convinced his victims that they had a problem in need of spiritual guidance, and then took advantage of their vulnerabilities for personal financial gain. The sentence rendered against him is lengthy but just and fair considering the irreparable harm he caused to his victims.” Annamalai generated income through the Hindu Temple of Georgia by charging fees to his followers in exchange for providing spiritual or related services. In a typical transaction, a follower

Workers with CEI and AT&T helped restore service to the line later and it was again taking calls, Children and Family Services spokeswoman Mary Louise Madigan said. The line went down at about 8 pm, she said. The 696-KIDS hotline offers help to children under 18-years-old who might be victims of abuse, neglect or other problems. Hindi literature in the Indian Diaspora, status of Hindi on the web, and Hindi story writing, as well as a poets’ conclave (Kavi Sammelan) and a play. Internationally renowned academicians and research scholars, including Dr. Christi Merrill, University of Michigan, Dr. Mary Curran, Rutgers, Dr. Satya Santosh, Indian Institute of Delhi, Dr. Surendra Gambhir, UPenn, Dr. Gabriela Nik Ilieva, NYU, and Dr. Hemanti Bannerji, Wharton School of Business, presented their papers and took part in discussions. Mulay also inaugurated the conference on April 3 where senior Rutgers University officials elaborated upon growing relationship between Rutgers and various institutions in India. Dr. Joanna Regulska, executive vice president for International and Global Affairs at Rutgers , expressed her happiness over the strong support extended by Government of India to Rutgers. According to a blueprint presented by Dr. Ved Chaudhary, a Hindi Sangam Foundation official, it would cost over $4 million to construct an independent facility in Central New Jersey, where Rutgers is located, a press release issued by the consulate said.

agreed to purchase a particular service for a communicated price, and provided a credit card number by telephone to guarantee payment. He charged his followers’ credit card numbers on multiple occasions, in excess of the agreed amount and without authorization. When the followers disputed the charges with their credit card companies, Annamalai submitted false documentation to the credit card companies in support of the unauthorized charges. He later filed spurious lawsuits against followers who disputed his charges and

manipulated audio recordings to make it sound as if the followers had agreed to the disputed charges. The income generated by the temple through these credit card charges was used to fund the personal lifestyle of Annamalai and his family, who owned or controlled numerous homes and real properties, luxury vehicles, and foreign bank accounts in India. Annamalai concealed assets from creditors and others by diverting credit card receipts and donations intended for the temple to a bank account in the name of a different entity. He was also convicted of money laundering for using proceeds from the bankruptcy fraud to pay mortgages on properties that he owned, and payments to himself. Annamalai was also found guilty of obstruction and false statements for sending a fraudulent e-mail to an IRS agent. The e-mail was made to look like it came from a witness to the criminal investigation into the temple. In addition to Annamalai’s prison sentence, US District Court Judge Timothy Batten also ordered Annamalai to not engage in any spiritual service for compensation, directly or indirectly through intermediaries. He would be housed in a ‘Communications Management Housing Unit’, which is a special facility that will be able to monitor Annamalai’s telephone calls and electronic communications from prison.

World’s first fully self-powered video camera BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- Indian American scientist Shree K. Nayar from Columbia University has invented the world’s first fully self-powered video camera that can produce an image each second, indefinitely, of a well-lit indoor scene. According to Tech2.com, the camera, which is encased in a 3D-printed body, is completely self-sustaining meaning it can power itself indefinitely. “We are in the middle of a digital imaging revolution. A camera that can function as an untethered device forever--without any external

W

power supply--would be incredibly useful,” said Nayar, who heads the computer vision laboratory at Columbia Engineering. The key is the image sensor with diodes that can go back and forth between using light to generate electricity and current for measuring light and producing the image, as well as retaining solar light as pure power to run the device. The team that worked on the camera is composed of Nayar, research engineer Daniel Sims, and consultant Mikhail Fridber. Once the team realized that solar panels and digital cameras are basically made from the same materials, they were able to put together the

design for the self-powered camera. Nayar says that the image sensor could use a rechargeable battery and charge it via its harvesting capability. “But we took an extreme approach to demonstrate that the sensor is indeed truly self-powered and used just a capacitor to store the harvested energy,” he told Tech2. Nayar and company are slated to present their work at the upcoming international conference on computational photography at the Rice University in Houston.

Researchers from the University of Queensland have found that the potent toxin used for revamping our look and personality is transported via our nerves back to the central nervous system. Botox — best known for its ability to smooth wrinkles — has been extremely useful for the treatment of over-active muscles and spasticity which promotes local and long-term paralysis. “The discovery that some of the injected toxin can travel through our nerves is worrying, considering the extreme potency of the toxin,” warned professor Frederic Meunier.

Playing flute lowers sleep apnea risk Smokers still think a few

cigarettes are safe LONDON: Although most people know that smoking is a risk factor for developing several cancers, many still wrongly believe that smoking less is safe, says a new study. The researchers found that more than a third of the people they studied believe that smoking up to 10 cigarettes is not associated with any risk of lung cancer. The results demonstrate powerfully that the war against smoking is far from over, said one of the researchers, Laurent Greillier from Hopital Nord in Marseille, France. The researchers analysed data from a representative survey of 1,602 French people aged between 40 and 75 years.

Among the whole sample population, 34 percent wrongly considered that a daily consumption of up to 10 cigarettes was not associated with any risk of lung cancer. “This finding is particularly impressive and threatening. It shows that relatively low cigarette consumption is considered as 'safe' for a lot of people. In our study, only half of subjects answered that there is no 'safe' cigarette,” Greillier noted. “It seems that people are aware about the dangers of tobacco for health, but might consider that the risks are not for themselves, but only for other people,” Greillier said. The findings were presented at the European Lung Cancer Conference (ELCC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

f snoring is ruining your sound sleep, learning to play the flute can do wonders. Indian researchers have found that playing wind instruments lowers your risk of developing the sleep disorder, the obstructive sleep apnea. The researchers believe this is due to the increased muscle tone in the upper airways, which wind instrument players are likely to have. “The findings of our study present an interesting theory on preventative measures or treatment in sleep apnea,” said one of the authors of the study, Silas Daniel Raj. Wind instrument playing could become a cheap and non-invasive method of preventing sleep apnea in those at risk of developing the condition, Raj pointed out. Raj and his colleagues conducted lung function testing in 64 people who played a wind instrument and compared results to a control group of 65 people who did not play any wind instruments. The participants also completed the Berlin questionnaire, an established method used to assess the risk of sleep apnea.

When analyzing the results of the questionnaires, the researchers found that the group who played the wind instruments had a lower

risk of developing sleep apnea. However, no difference was seen between the two groups in the lung function tests. The relative risk of developing sleep apnea based on the questionnaire was 0.18 in the wind instrument players, with a relative risk of less than one indicating a lower risk compared to controls. So a flute is what you need if you suffer from this disease. The research was presented at the Sleep and Breathing Conference 2015.

Flower bedecked, Kashmir looks to a tourist boom Putting last year’s ravaging floods behind, Kashmir is ready to welcome tourists IANS, SRINAGAR

fter losing its peak autumn tourist season last year due to unprecedented floods, Kashmir is bedecked with flowers to receive tourists this year. The good news is that tourists are already arriving here in encouraging numbers. In the first week of April, which traditionally marks the beginning of Spring tourism in Kashmir, 10,000 tourists arrived here, an official said. “This also includes about 4,000 foreign tourists,” another official at the Foreigners’ Registration Office told IANS. The early spring arrivals are encouraging given the fact that rains in late March and early April had almost brought back the horror of last September’s floods. “It

was just water-logging that had been given unnecessary hype by the media outside the state. This damaged our tourism prospects,” Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed told reporters while throwing open to visitors Asia’s largest Tulip Garden here on April 6. Despite the media hype of spring floods in Kashmir, tourism players are optimistic about increased inflows. “Nearly 60 percent of our bookings for this month were cancelled due to the fear of floods. The media should have acted responsibly. They created unnecessary hype as if the entire Kashmir was flooded,” Muhammad Azim Toman of the Houseboat Owners Association here told IANS. Houseboat owners are now ready to receive guests after spruc-

ing up their vessels with paint and polish. “We have completed repair work of houseboats. Now, the government should vigorously work for attracting tourists in Kashmir,” Toman added. “April and May are important months for tourist flow in Kashmir as most of our bookings for the year happen in these months,” said Tariq Habib, sales and marketing manager of Hotel Vintage in Gulmarg. Omar Nabi, a tour and travel operator, said most of the bookings for April were cancelled. “Last year, this season, we had 80-90 percent bookings. But this month we had just five-eight percent bookings”, Nabi told IANS. Farooq Ahmad Shah, Kashmir’s tourism director, told IANS: “A negative message went out due to the false media reports about

floods in the Valley when it was just water-logging. Our premier tourist destinations were not affected even in last year’s floods.” Industry stakeholders said adverse travel advisories, lack of quality infrastructure and sudden increase in airfares during the peak season are affecting domestic and foreign tourist inflows. Bad roads are, however, worrying tour and travel operators. “The state government should improve road connectivity in Kashmir on a priority basis. You see, it takes a lot of time to travel from one destination to another because of bumpy and dusty roads, Nazir Bakshi of Shiraz Travels told IANS. Despite problems, Kashmir’s tourist industry is ready to bounce back this year to break past records.

Self-affirmations boost confidence and performance TORONTO: If you get terrified every time you are called in for a performance review, focus on your strengths, write down your best job skills or at least think about them in order to negotiate better with your boss, says a new study. When the stakes are high, people in positions of low power may perform better by using self-affirmations to boost their confidence, the findings showed. “You should reflect on things that

you know are good about yourself,” said lead researcher Sonia Kang, assistant professor of organisational behavior and human resource management at University of Toronto. The findings suggest that writing or thinking about one’s family or other positive traits that are not associated with the high-stakes situation also may boost confidence. The researchers conducted three experiments to measure performance in pressure-filled situations. When participants were in a position of high power, they tended to perform better under pressure, while those with less power performed worse. In one of the experiments, 88 MBA students were paired together as the buyer or seller of a biotechnology plant. Buyers who completed the positive self-affirmation performed better in negotiating a lower sale price for the plant, reducing the power differences.
