Officials of the Illinois State Board of Elections declared that Jhingan did not have enough valid signatures on her nominating petition to be on the ballot after they invalidated over 1,250 of them ruling they were not collected properly. “It was an absolutely absurd ruling,” Jon Zahm, her campaign consultant told IANS. “It was not based on facts and they came up with a crazy theory.” Under the election system in Illinois, candidates have to first run in the primary elections where registered members of their respective

parties vote for the candidate to represent their parties in the general election. In the constituency known as Illinois District, 8 whites make up 70 per cent of the population and only 12 per cent is Asian, a category that includes Indians. Krishnamoorthi is the first nonwhite person to be elected from the constituency that is traditionally a Democratic Party bastion. The terms of Representatives is only two years, requiring Krishnamoorthi, who was elected in 2016, to run for reelection in November. He is one of four Indian-Americans in the House of Representatives, all of them Democrats.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump is expected to sign a national security memorandum establishing a “National Vetting Centre” to improve the vetting process of individuals entering the country. The presidential memorandum will give the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other agencies six months to establish the centre, an administration official told CNN. tre is intended to streamline vetting and improve the flow of information between various federal agencies. he signs which were available about the decline in the influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat’s rural areas during the state assembly elections have been substantiated by the drubbing which the BJP has received at the Congress’s hands in the byelections in Rajasthan, where the saffron party is in power. Earlier, the Congress had shown that it might well be on the comeback trail by its success in the Chitrakoot assembly byelection in another BJP-ruled state, Madhya Pradesh. In all these byelections, it was not so much the Congress’s victory which was note-

worthy as the impressive margins of its success. Although, it is too early to say whether these election trends point to an ebbing of the saffron tide after the overwhelming nature of the wave in 2014 and again in Uttar Pradesh last year.

Violence of saffron groups is beginning to take its toll on the BJP’s electoral fortunes, notwithstanding the talk about ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ Besides, the emphasis placed on the rural areas in the latest budget is an indication that the party has taken its setbacks in the Gujarat countryside seriously and is trying to make amends by reaching out to the vulnerable sections. The proposed health insurance cover for 500 million, 40 per cent of the population, is not unlike the previous government’s food security

programme for 67 per cent of the people. More than what happened in Gujarat, where at least the urbanites stood behind the BJP, what the Rajasthan outcome has shown is that all the sections have voted against the ruling party. The widespread nature of the discontent underlines a deep and extensive popular unhappiness with governance although a minister has sought to explain the party’s defeats by referring to the grievances of the Rajputs over the Padmaavat film. What cannot but be worrying for the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duo is that the virtually unchecked violence of saffron groups like the gau rakshaks or the opponents of love jehad is beginning to take its toll on the BJP’s electoral fortunes, notwithstanding all the talk about Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas. Unless the governments at the Centre and in the states run by the BJP deal firmly with the rowdy elements, the party’s hope of a repeat run of the last general election in 2019 and improving on its tally, will not be fulfilled.

Behind the facade of the paint, there are many untold stories,” Jyotsna Lall, Director Programmes at AKTC, told IANS. “All the 144 households of the slum were linked to the main trunk sewer which was damaged and had to be replaced with the help of the Delhi Jal Board. There were no garbage bins in the houses and all the waste used to be dumped near the drain,” said Lall.

BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, MS -- Indian American reporter and anchor at NBC Boston Natasha Verma, who, having felt the pain of losing her hair to cancer in 2017, has now decided to do something for other cancer patients. The 23-year-old, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2017 and has been in remission since November 2017, has initiated a project, “Put a Cap on Cancer,” through which she will provide free stylish “cap wigs” to patients battling the disease. Verma was a healthy woman in her early 20s. Everything was going well for her until one morning, she felt a lump on her neck. Doctors found fast-growing malignant tumors on both sides of her collarbone and in her chest. She was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. With a race against time, she immediately underwent aggressive chemotherapy for

months at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. The hardest part of her cancer treatment, Verma explains, was chemotherapy, which led to hair loss. And she found herself struggling with finding the right wig. “Losing my hair was one of the hardest parts of chemotherapy,” Verma wrote on Facebook. She added that every wig is 100 percent human hair–available in 80 colors–that is permanently attached to a cap, “creating a ready-to-wear look with no styling needed.” “Your donation will be a tremendous gift to a woman or child undergoing chemotherapy. More than just hair, you are giving the gift of confidence, hope and strength,” she wrote. BY A STAFF WRITER AWRENCE, KS – Last week, chemistry professor Syed Ahmed Jamal was getting ready to take his daughter to school when he was stopped outside his home in Lawrence, Kansas. Officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were on his front lawn. Before Jamal, 55, could say goodbye to his wife and three children, the ICE agents detained him and led him away in handcuffs. The arrest of a “beloved Lawrence family man, scientist and community leader” came as a shock to Jamal’s friends and neighbors in the Kansas City area, where he has lived since arriving in the United States on a student visa from Bangladesh more than 30 years ago. He would go on to also attain graduate degrees in molecular biosciences and pharmaceutical engineering, then settle in Lawrence to raise a family. Along the way, he switched from student visas to an H-1B visa for highly skilled workers, then back to a student visa when he enrolled in a doctoral program, his family said. At the time of his arrest, Jamal was on a temporary work permit, teaching chemistry as an adjunct professor at Park University in Kansas City and conducting research at various local hospitals. Jamal’s arrest is also the latest example of ICE agents abruptly targeting noncitizens with no criminal record who have, in the past, been allowed to stay in the country because they were seen as contributing positively to society, according to Jeffrey Bennett, an immigration lawyer who has filed a request to stay Jamal’s deportation. There have been 7,300 confirmed influenza cases so far this season-- about 3,100 more than during the same period last year--with one death from a flu-related illness, according to the latest data from the state Department of Health. And, emergency room visits and admissions in New Jersey have surpassed the three highest flu seasons ever recorded in the state, as patients continue to flood clinics and emergency rooms, putting some at full capacity. BY A STAFF WRITER OANOKE, VA. -- A Virginia man has been charged with murder in connection with an attack on an Indian American motel owner, Ishvarlal Patel, and two women. Timothy Church (26) is being held without bond. A Roanoke police department statement says officers arrived at the Starlite Motel on January 23 and found the 60-year-old Patel, of Troutville, Va., on the floor. They also saw a man holding a baseball bat and standing over two visibly injured women. Dispatchers told officers that the caller was in the motel’s office, and that they could hear a “loud, violent disorder in the background,” The police say Church had run from the scene before being arrested. Patel was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma. The two women were hospitalized for one day even as it was not known if Church knew the victims. Patel was born in Mozambique and later grew up in Kabwe, Zambia, on his family’s farm. He moved to London to pursue his education in engineering. Upon finishing his education and finding the love of his life, he and his wife Jyotsana returned to Zambia for a short time before immigrating to the United States in the town of Higgins, Texas. A memorial service was held for Patel on January 30.

BY A STAFF WRITER LDIE, VA – An Indian American mother and her son were found dead inside their Aldie, Virginia home on January 31. Mala Manwani, 65, and Rishi Manwani, 32, were found by the police after they received a phone call from one of Mala’s co-workers, saying that she had not shown up to work this week. Both mother and son were discovered dead with gunshot wounds, leading the police to believe that they are victims of a double homicide. Kraig Troxell, a spokesman for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office said that there was no evidence of a forced entry into the home. Troxell added that no one else lived in the residence with them and the police have never responded to any incidents at the residence in the past. Sheriff officials say that the case does not appear to be a “random act.” Anyone with information is asked to call the Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Office at 703777-0475.

‘Elite 40 Under 40’ list has two Indians BY A STAFF WRITER AKLAND COUNTY, MI -- Oakland County Executive has announced its 2018 ‘Elite 40 Under 40’ class, with Indian Americans Shantha Kumari Rajendran and Adi Sathi among those honored. The Oakland County Executive’s ‘Elite 40 Under 40’ program, in its seventh year, is an initiative of county executive L. Brooks Patterson that recognizes and spotlights dynamic leaders under the age of 40 who are making a difference in Oakland County and beyond. It is open to individuals who live or work in Oakland County. Rajendran, 36, is a staff engineer and systems lead at Panasonic Automotive. She has made many contributions to technology and has several inventions to her credit. Rajendran has filed 10 patents in the US Patent Office and two of her patents have been approved recently. A graduate of computer science engineering in India and a master’s in management in the US, as well as earning credits from Harvard University and MIT, Rajendran has presented technical papers at

Indian arrested for running ‘pill mill’ BY A STAFF WRITER ONTGOMERY, AL -- An Indian American man, Akash Kumar, 27, of Montgomery, Alabama, along with Misty Michelle Fannin, 41, of Tallassee, Alabama and Jacqueline Suzanne Brownfield, 33, of Wetumpka, Alabama, were arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation and prosecution of a “pill mill,” according to United States Attorney Louis Franklin, Sr. According to the indictment, “all of the defendants are alleged to have assisted Dr. Gilberto Sanchez in operating a ‘pill mill,’ out of Family Practice, a medical clinic located” in Montgomery, Alabama. The indictment alleges that Kumar, along with Brownfield, used their position in the billing office to overbill patients for services provided by the nurse practitioners while Fannin, the office administrator, helped Sanchez to launder the money generated by the illegal drug distribution. If convicted, Kumar and Brownfield could

face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison while Fannin could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Dr. Sanchez pled guilty in the federal court to drug distribution, health care fraud and money laundering charges in November 2017.

According to the researchers, spending too much time in dimly lit rooms might change the brain’s structure and hurt one’s ability to remember and learn. For the study, published in the journal Hippocampus, researchers studied the brains of Nile grass rats — which, like humans, are diurnal and sleep at night — after exposing

them to dim and bright light for four weeks. The rodents exposed to dim light lost about 30 per cent of capacity in the hippocampus, a critical brain region for learning and memory and performed poorly on a spatial task they had trained on previously.
