United Nations: (IANS) UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres condemns "in strongest terms" the bomb blasts in Pakistan targetting two political offices on the eve of the election, his Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said. "The Secretary-General wants to emphasise the right of Pakistanis to participate in elections that is free from fear, from intimidation and, frankly, from violence," he said at his daily briefing on Wednesday. "He condemns in strongest terms the horrific attacks and the bomb explosions that we saw earlier today that killed many, many people and injured many more, a day before the elections, (attacks) clearly related to the elections," Dujarric added. The two terrorist attacks in Balochistan rocked Pakistan, which is set to hold elections shrouded in controversy, with the main opposition leader Imran Khan in jail and barred from contesting the elections. Khan, a leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), lost the prime ministership in 2022 when a vote of no-confidence prevailed against him in the National Assembly. Sameer Kamath, a doctoral candidate at Indiana's Purdue University, was found dead at a nature reserve on Monday evening, the Warren County Coroner's office confirmed in a statement. In its first advisory following the spike in violence, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) asked Indians not to travel to the Rakhine state because of the prevailing situation, including
disruption in telecommunication network and scarcity of essential commodities. "In view of the deteriorating security situ at ion, disr upt ion of me ans of telecommunications, including landlines, and severe scarcity of essential commodities, all Indian citizens are advised not to travel to the Rakhine State of Myanmar," it said. "Those Indian citizens who are already in the Rakhine State are advised to leave the State immediately," the MEA said.

He also said he was beaten black and blue by the men in his eye, face, ribs and back. Ali had to be taken to the local hospital, where he was treated for multiple cuts and bruises. So far, the police do not have any suspect in custody so far but the probe is underway. While incidents such as these are not uncommon in big cities, the past few weeks have seen a series of unfortunate events unfolding for Indian students in America. Indian-American student Sameer Kamath was found dead in a nature preserve in Indiana. The 23-year-old U.S. citizen hailing from India was pursuing a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. Kamath’s body was found around 5 p.m. Monday at the Crow’s Grove Nature Preserve, which is part of the Niches Land Trust at North Warren County in Williamsport. He had completed his master’s degree also in the same field from Purdue University in August 2023. The coroner’s office notified Kamath’s family of his passing, and a forensic autopsy is scheduled to be

Noah Kagan, CEO and Co-founder of Appsumo.com, recently featured on CNBC Make It'sMillennial Money series, which details how people around the world earn, spend, and save their money. Mr Kagan, who lives in the US, and is the son of Israeli immigrant parents, said he always dreamed of being rich and knew that the pathway to riches ran through the world of tech. “My dream was Microsoft. If I could be around Bill Gates, who at the time was iconic … that's the path that I wanted to follow,” he said. In 2005, he started working for Facebook as a product manager but was fired a year later after he leaked company information to the press at Coachella. ''I was shocked. I'm 24 years old and working on what I believe is the most important thing on the planet. I lived in
a house with six other Facebook people a mile away. So it was my entire, frankly, existence,'' he said. Looking back, he admits that the firing was not only justified but also put him on a path to where he ultimately wanted to be. ''It's a good experience to get fired and realize, you might want to take control of your destiny and be an entrepreneur, and you have that option to do what you want to do,'' he said. After being fired, he ran conferences for aspiring entrepreneurs, taught English in South Korea, and picked up consulting work for Silicon Valley tech firms. In 2008, he thought it was the right time to give full-time entrepreneurship a shot. Using his experience with working with Facebook, and other tech giants such as Intel and Mint.com, he then started his discount software website AppSumo in in 2010. Mr Kagan revealed that it only took a couple of days for the plan to come together. He didn't pay himself in the first year in charge, but as the company started to flourish, he began taking a portion of the profits as an annual bonus. Last year, the company generated about $80 million in revenue and reported more than $7 million in profit. ''The way I have always done my salary is that I pay myself relatively low. Historically, it's been around $200,000 in annual salary. And at the end of the year, after we have paid the team after we have taken everyone out for an all-expenses-paid vacation, and done other distributions to people in the company, then I take a profit share. Last year, I took a $3 million profit share for my salary,'' he told CNBC Make It. ''One of the best parts of being an entrepreneur is that you don't have to wake up to an alarm,'' Mr Kagan said, adding that he doesn't want to ever retire. In addition to his AppSumo business, Mr Kagan operates a YouTube channel and manages five rental properties. eha Dhupia, who recently made headlines after announcing the sixth season of her highly acclaimed chat show, NoFilterNeha, on Tuesday said she would have remained "unemployed" as an actor if it weren't for the opportunities that came her way from OTT platforms. The 43-year-old actor, known for movies such as ‘Singh Is Kinng’, ‘Ek Chalis Ki Last Local’ and ‘Phas Gaye Re Obama’, forayed into the digital space in 2016 with podcast "#NoFilterNeha" and two years later, starred in Karan Johar's segment of Netflix anthology ‘Lust Stories’. "I took a two-three-year break, I was busy doing other stuff, having children... that keeps you very busy. Then I was like, 'I can become a producer', (but) becoming a producer is a difficult thing in the industry," Dhupia said during a panel discussion during the 'Champions of Change' conclave here. "If it wasn't for OTT, then I would still be unemployed. All of last year, I did one feature film and I love going to cinemas to watch films.
At the same time, I did three other OTT shows and they kept us happy and consumed," she added. According to the actor, most creative people have the fear of losing out on potential audiences, if they don't like the content. "The fear actors and producers have is that the audience should not leave watching our work midway... We don't want them to go away. "They have the ability to pause that fear but at the same time, there's a will to hold on to the consumer. We want them to watch our content. The fact that we keep producing great content will help us in growth," Dhupia said. Her last feature film appearance was 2022's "A Thursday", which got a direct-to-digital release on Disney+ Hotstar. Ayush Sharma, Guramrit Sidhu, and Subham Kumar were arrested after a joint operation 'Dead Hand' by the Canadian cops and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They are among 10 people arrested in Canada this week for drug trafficking. The smuggling racket involved drug suppliers linked to Mexican cartels, brokers and distributors in Los Angeles, and Canadian truck drivers, US attorney Martin Estrada told a press conference. Ayush, 25, from Brampton and Subham, 29, from Calgary allegedly worked as truck drivers, handling cross-border smuggling, while Guramrit, 60, oversaw
the entire drugs transportation. All 10 arrested in drugs cases will be extradited to the US, the report said. Guramrit was involved in procuring huge quantities of drugs on a wholesale basis from Mexico and Los Angeles and used a trucking network to transport those to Canada, officials said. He was reportedly known as 'King' among his associates. Canadian "handlers" and "dispatchers" used to make short trips to Los Angeles, where they would coordinate the pickup and delivery of methamphetamine and cocaine shipments using trucks going to Canada, they added. The transportation network included drivers from dozens of trucking companies who crossed the US-Canada border via Detroit Windsor Tunnel, Buffalo Peace Bridge and Blue Water Bridge.

Several passengers on board a cruise ship in the US have mysteriously been struck down with vomiting and diarrhoea, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an alert on Wednesday. According to the press note, at least 123 passengers and 16 crew members travelling on the Queen Victoria have reported falling ill since the voyage set off on January 22 from Florida. The cause of the gastrointestinal illness isn't known, health officials said, but they added that the main symptoms among those on board the vessel included diarrhoea and vomiting. "Number of passengers who have reported being ill during the voyage out of total number of passengers onboard: 123 of 1,824 (6.74%)," the CDC said in the alert.

This led to the processing of over $1 billion in high-risk transactions without filing a single Suspicious Activity Report, as required by law.

Ranchi: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren arrived in assembly today amid tight security as Champai Soren - who stepped into his shoes after his arrest - faced a trust vote to prove his government's majority. Addressing the assembly, Mr Soren alleged that even Raj Bhavan had a role to play in his arrest. "On the night of January 31, for the first time in the country, a chief minister was arrested... and I believe that Raj Bhavan was also involved in this incident," he said. "The day will be remembered as a black chapter in India's history," Mr Soren said.
The Champai Soren government in Jharkhand comfortably passed the majority test in Assembly this afternoon, getting 47 votes in the 81-member Assembly. With one MLA resigning last month, the majority mark in the Assembly was 41. The ruling coalition comprising the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal had earlier expressed confidence that they would sail through. Twenty-nine votes were cast against the Champai Soren government. The floor test in Jharkhand Assembly was held in the wake of dramatic developments in the tribal-dominated state, starting from former Chief Minister Hemant Soren's late-night resignation, followed by his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate, on January 31. Hemant Soren is being investigated by the central agency in a money laundering case.

FBI Warns of Tech-Support Scammers Using In-Person Couriers HiIndia Newsdesk
The FBI has issued a warning regarding a surge in personalized scams involving in-person couriers, with a primary focus on targeting senior citizens. The scammers employ tech-support and government impersonation tactics, convincing victims that their financial accounts are compromised. To safeguard their funds, victims are instructed to convert assets into cash or purchase precious metals like gold or silver. In some cases, scammers direct victims to wire funds to a supposed metal dealer who promises to deliver the precious metals to their homes. The criminals then arrange in-person meetings with victims, either at their residences or public locations, where couriers collect cash or precious metals. Scammers may request authentication
using a passcode, such as the serial number of a U.S. dollar bill. However, after the assets are handed over, victims lose contact with the scammers, resulting in significant financial losses. The FBI reported an "uptick" in such cases from May to December of the previous year, leading to aggregated losses exceeding $55 million. This method represents a departure from the typical online tactics of scammers,
who traditionally operate from behind the anonymity of the internet or remote locations. Chris Pierson, CEO of cybersecurity firm BlackCloak, emphasized this shift, noting that scammers are now willing to risk being captured on video during inperson interactions. To protect against tech-support scams, the FBI advises recognizing that the U.S. government and legitimate businesses will never request the purchase of gold or precious metals. Additionally, individuals should safeguard personal information, avoid disclosing home addresses, and refrain from meeting unknown individuals to exchange cash or precious metals. Jemin Patel, an Indian American along with two others lost his life when the plane he was flying in crashed. Patel was piloting a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza V35 but the plane crashed into a mobile home park in Clearwater, Florida. 54-year-old Patel died in the devastating crash, two other women who were inside one of the mobile homes at the time of the accident died too. Clearwater officials identified the two women as Martha Parry, an 86-year-old resident of the mobile home park, and Mary Ellen Pender, aged 54. According to reports Patel had notified authorities of an engine failure just before the plane descended and crashed into the mobile home park. Jemin Patel is described as a skilled pilot and a respected member of Melbourne Beach in his obituary. The obituary also said: “Jemin had become a familiar and trusted presence in the skies above Melbourne Beach. His passion for flying, coupled with his commitment to safety and professionalism, had earned him the respect and admiration of his peers.”

Proximity to Fitness Centers Boosts PostStroke Physical Activity

eople may be more likely to engage in physical activity after stroke if they live in a neighbourhood with more recreational and fitness facilities, a new study has discovered. The study published in the journal American Stroke Association found that people in New York City who survived a mild stroke were more likely to maintain the same level of physical activity as they did prior to the stroke, or even increase that activity if they lived in areas with more recreational centres and fitness resources nearby. "Our findings suggest that it's important to have a conversation with stroke patients about physical activity resources available in their area so they are able to continue their recovery after hospital discharge," said lead study author Jeffrey Wing, PhD, MPH, an assistant professor of epidemiology at The Ohio State University in Columbus. In this study, researchers investigated the potential link between available fitness/ exercise centres, pools and gyms and physical activity among 333 people living in New York City who had a mild stroke. The researchers found that about 17 per cent of participants reported being more physically active one year after the stroke, and 48 per cent reported having about the same level of physical activity as before the stroke. The odds of being more active were 57 per cent higher among participants who lived in areas with more recreational and fitness resources compared to those with fewer or no fitness resources. Similarly, the odds of reporting the same level of physical activity one year after stroke were 47 per cent higher in participants who lived in areas with more recreational centres and fitness resources compared to those with fewer or no resources available, according to the study. "The takeaway from this analysis is that it’s not that people should move to a location where there are more resources to engage in physical activity, but to urge people to find ways to be active in their own neighbourhood," said study co-author Julie Strominger, a PhD student of epidemiology at The Ohio State University.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has claimed his Neuralink company has successfully implanted one of its wireless brain chips in a human. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he said "promising" brain activity had been detected after the procedure and the patient was "recovering well". The company's goal is to connect human brains to computers to help tackle complex neurological conditions. A number of rival firms have already implanted similar devices. "For any company producing medical devices, the first test in humans is a significant milestone," said Professor Anne Vanhoestenberghe of King's College London. "For the brain computer interface community, we must place this news in the context that whilst there are many companies working on exciting products, there are only a few other companies who have implanted their devices in humans, so Neuralink has joined a rather small group." However, she also suggested there needed to be a note of caution as "true success" could only be evaluated in the long-term. "We know Elon Musk is very adept at generating publicity for his company," she added.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organization's cancer agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in a stark warning said that new cancer diagnosis is projected to skyrocket by 77 per cent by 2050, reaching over 35 million cases annually. The agency attributed the alarming to a combination of lifestyle and environmental factors, with tobacco, alcohol, obesity, and air pollution identified as the key culprits. According to Dr J.B. Sharma, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at Action Cancer Hospital, several commonly used items at home are potentially increasing the risk of cancer. "Plastic bottles used for drinking water may contain microplastics, and the habit of drinking hot tea from plastic bags or using white-coloured mayonnaise in food items can introduce harmful chemicals, such as epichlorohydrin, into the body, raising the likelihood of cancer," he told IANS. Moreover, modern technologies, while making life
easier, pose risks.Using plastic utensils in ovens or consuming food cooked in non-stick cookware can expose individuals to harmful chemicals like endocrine-disrupting agents, potentially leading to cancer. Awareness of these factors is crucial in mitigating the risk and promoting a healthier lifestyle, the experts said. Further everyday beauty products also raise the risk of cancer. Nail polish and nail polish removers harbour hazardous chemicals, including toluene, formaldehyde, and acetone, which are known carcinogens. “Chemical-laden hair products, such as those containing formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing agents, pose a significant cancer risk. The use of certain hair straightening products can lead to both short-term and long-term health issues,” Dr Rajit Channa, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. Recognising and avoiding these carcinogenic agents in daily beauty routines is crucial for preventing potential cancer-related complications. Further, oncologists are witnessing a surge in cancers among youth, driven by e-cigarettes. Similarly, the growing trend of hookah consumption among the youth introduces various harmful chemicals, particularly in flavoured variants. “The popularity of e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional smoking is on the rise. However, the chemicals used in e-cigarettes, such as nicotine, formaldehyde, tin, nickel, lead, chromium, arsenic, and diacetyl metal, significantly increase the risk of lung cancer," said Dr Randeep Singh, Senior Consultant and Director of Medical Oncology at Narayana Hospital, Gurugram.The experts explained that both e-cigarettes and flavoured hookahs contain dangerous chemicals like diacetyl, carbon monoxide, cadmium, ammonia, radon, methane, and acetone, elevating the risk of cancer.

A student from Hyderabad has been injured after being attacked by four armed robbers near his house in Chicago. A video shows the student, who was bleeding profusely, stating that he was kicked and punched by the robbers and that his phone was snatched. The attack has sparked concern, especially as it comes in the wake of four Indian-origin students being found dead in the United States this year. Syed Mazahir Ali, a resident of Langar Houz in Hyderabad, had gone to the US to pursue a Master's degree from the Indiana Wesleyan University. CCTV footage shows Mr Ali being pursued by three of his attackers near his house on Campbell Avenue in Chicago in the early hours of Tuesday (Central Standard Time). Blood streaming down his forehead, nose and mouth, Mr Ali can be heard saying in a video, "Four people attacked me. I was returning home with a food packet in my hand. I slipped near my house and the four people kicked and punched me. Please help me, bro. Please help me." Saini, who was pursuing an MBA, worked part-time at a convenience store where a homeless man took shelter. The 25-year-old had reportedly given the man - Julian Faulkner - chips, water and even a jacket from time to time.
