Biden admin to establish first-ever national strategy to counter Islamophobia HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: (IANS) The White House has announced that US President Joe Biden's administration is set to establish the country's first-ever national strategy to counter Islamophobia. At a press briefing on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karine JeanPierre said: "President Biden ran for office to restore the soul of our nation. He is unequivocal: there is no place for hate in America against anyone. Period." "We look forward to continuing our work with community leaders, advocates, members of Congress, and more to develop the strategy -- which will be a joint effort led by the Domestic Policy Council and the National Security Council -- and counter the scourge of Islamophobia and hate in all its forms." She went on to say that " for too long, Muslims in the US, and those perceived to be Muslim, such as Arabs and Sikhs, have endured a disproportionate number of hate-fueled attacks and other discriminatory incidents".

King Charles says 'no excuse' for Kenya colonial violence

HiIndia Newsdesk

King Charles has acknowledged the "abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence committed against Kenyans" during their independence struggle. On his state visit to Kenya, the King addressed the "wrongdoings" of Britain's colonial era. He told a state banquet in Nairobi of his "greatest sorrow and regret" and that there was "no excuse". But the King did not deliver a formal apology - which would have to be decided by government ministers. In response, Kenya's President William Ruto praised the King's courage for addressing such "uncomfortable truths".

"President Biden ran for office to restore the soul of our nation. He is unequivocal: there is no place for hate in America against anyone. Period" This is the "latest step as part of President Biden’s directive last year to establish an interagency group to increase and

better coordinate US government efforts to counter Islamophobia, antisemitism, and related forms of bias and discrimination within the US", JeanPierre was quoted as saying in a White House statement. The initiative comes amid a spike in antisemitism incidents and increased fears of Islamophobia across the US in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Israel Gaza: Joe Biden calls for 'pause' in conflict

HiIndia Newsdesk

US President Joe Biden has called for a "pause" in the Israel-Hamas conflict in a campaign speech in Minneapolis. The president was speaking to a group of about 200 people when a woman interrupted him and asked him to call for a ceasefire. Describing herself as a rabbi, she said: "I need you to call for a ceasefire right now." "I think we need a pause," Mr Biden said. A pause would "give time to get the prisoners out", he said.

White House officials later explained he had meant both getting hostages held by Hamas out and humanitarian aid in, the Associated Press reports. Israel has been bombing Gaza since the 7 October Hamas attacks that killed 1,400 people and saw 239 people taken hostage. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 8,700 people have been killed since Israel's retaliatory bombing began. Mr Biden initially threw his support behind Israel, but his position appears to have changed amid a humanitarian crisis and high civilian death toll in Gaza. His call for a pause marks a slight change in tone from White House officials, who long maintained they would not get involved in how Israel, a close ally, carried out its military operations.

US Federal Reserve holds interest rates at 22-year high

Jerome Powell, the US central bank's chairman, says price rises still need to be kept under control HiIndia Newsdesk

The US central bank has held its key interest rate at its current 22-year high as it seeks to stabilise price rises, which had recently reached near-record levels.

The Federal Reserve's rate target remains at 5.25%-5.5%. The bank has been raising borrowing costs with the hope of cooling the economy and slowing inflation, the rate at which prices rise. It comes after recent data showed the US economy grew faster than expected. Raising interest rates is one mechanism that central banks can use to tackle inflation. The theory is that by raising interest rates and making it more expensive to borrow, consumers will spend less and that would lead to slower price rises. The bank had faced criticism, with some suggesting that holding interest rates at higher levels could put the US economy at risk of entering a recession.

Anti-war protesters interrupt US Senate hearing on funding for Israel

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: (IANS) Multiple anti-war protesters demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip repeatedly interrupted a US Senate hearing held on the administration's massive budget request for funding Israel and Ukraine amid the ongoing wars in the two nations. The Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on Tuesday, attended by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin as witnesses giving testimonies, was interrupted at least six times by the anti-war protesters, who called for an end to the brutality and condemned the US for "aiding the massacre", reports Xinhua news agency Minutes into Blinken's opening remarks, a man in the audience was heard shouting "ceasefire now". "save the children of Gaza" and "Where is your pride, America?" before he was escorted out of the room by Capitol Police.

Israel Strikes Gaza Refugee Camp Apartments for Second Day, Says Hamas

Li Keqiang: Ex-Chinese premier sidelined by Xi dies at 68

HiIndia Newsdesk

The Hamas-run government in Gaza says Israeli airstrikes have hit apartment buildings in a refugee camp near Gaza City for a second day in a row, causing many deaths and injuries. The toll from Wednesday's strikes was not immediately known. Meanwhile, dozens of people with foreign passports entered the Rafah crossing from Gaza to Egypt. It appeared to be the first time that foreign passport holders have been allowed to leave the besieged territory since the start of the Israel-Hamas war more than three weeks ago. Communications and internet services were gradually being restored after the second major cut in five days, according to Paltel, the main service provider.

Humanitarian aid agencies have warned that such blackouts severely disrupt their work in an already dire situation in Gaza. The Palestinian death toll in the IsraelHamas war has reached 8,525, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, more than 122 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids.

More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them civilians slain in the initial October 7 Hamas rampage that started the fighting. In addition, around 240 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by the militant group. One of the captives, a female Israeli soldier, was rescued in a special forces operation.

Former Chinese premier Li Keqiang HiIndia Newsdesk

Former Chinese premier Li Keqiang has died of a heart attack aged 68. State media said he died at 10 minutes past midnight on Friday despite "all-out" efforts to revive him. Li was once tipped to be the country's future leader but was overtaken by President Xi Jinping. Weeks of mounting political tension have erupted into protests and bloodshed in Bangladesh, leaving the country on edge ahead of general elections due in January. Several senior opposition leaders were arrested last Sunday, a day after a massive rally against the government turned violent, resulting in the deaths of at least two opposition supporters. The rejuvenated main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has intensified protests calling on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign. The BNP and its allies want a neutral

interim government ahead of the general elections, arguing that free and fair polls are not possible under Ms Hasina. The government led by her Awami League has rejected this demand. The BNP rally in the capital Dhaka attracted tens of thousands of people one of the biggest gatherings seen there in a decade. But things soon turned violent. Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas while opposition supporters threw stones and bricks. Some roads in the capital resembled a war zone, strewn with exploded sound grenades, tear gas shells and broken glass.

'We were asked to kill people', arrested Hamas terrorist tells Shin Bet HiIndia Newsdesk

Tel Aviv: (IANS) Omar Abu Rasha, a Hamas terrorist part of the killer squad of the terror outfit on October 7 who has been taken into custody by the Israelli intelligence, has said during interrogators that they were asked to simply kill people. Shin Bet, the Israeli intelligence agency, has released a video footage of the interrogation in which he could be heard saying: “The mission was simply to kill. We were asked to kill any person we come across, and not to kidnap." He also said that he was not asked to differentiate between man and woman

W h e n a s k e d w hy t h e y k i l l e d indiscriminately, he said, "We were told that all the people in Kfar Aza were settlers.” Rasha also said that he killed many persons during the attack on Kfar Aza, including children. The arrested terrorist also said that if his father had known that he had killed people, he would have shot him dead.

Indian-origin Physiotherapist Charged in Canada Sexual Assault Case

HiIndia Newsdesk

Toronto, Nov 2 (IANS) A 53-yearold Indian-origin physiotherapist has been arrested and charged in connection with sexually assaulting a victim at his clinic in Canada’s Ontario province, police said. Iraj Daneshvar was arrested after police received information on October 23 that a victim was sexually assaulted during a physiotherapy visit at a clinic in the area of Yonge Street and Centre Street in Richmond Hill. Investigators with the York Regional Police charged Daneshvar with one count of sexual assault causing bodily harm on October 30. Police believe there may be more victims and are urging anyone with more information to come forward. In August this year, 55-year-old Ajay Gupta was arrested in Toronto for allegedly sexually assaulting two women during job interviews. Toronto Police said that during the interviews, Gupta would instruct the victims how to meditate and then sexually assault them.

It was also “vague, motivated and unsustainable in law”, Kejriwal has alleged while claiming the notice was sent to him for extraneous considerations at the behest of the BJP. The Delhi chief minister questioned in what capacity was he called for questioning by the probe agency. “The said summons is not clear as to the capacity in which I am being summoned i.e. as a witness or a suspect.” He also said that the notice failed to provide details or reasons for him being called for questioning and termed it a “fishing and roving” exercise by the Enforcement Directorate.

Toronto, Nov 2 (IANS) Though Canada will admit 485,000 new immigrants in 2024 as in 2023, it plans to raise the numbers to 500,000 by 2025. As India is Canada’s biggest source of immigration and students, Indians will be the biggest beneficiary of these levels

because they are going to get the lion’s share of a record 281,135 newcomers under the economic category and 114,000 under the family category. Last year, over 118,000 Indians took up Canadian permanent residency (PR), accounting for a quarter of all 437,120 newcomers to Canada. The new immigration targets will push up Canada’s population each year by 1.3 per cent. In fact, record immigration levels have helped the Canadian population cross the 40-million mark even as the country faces an acute housing shortage. The Justin Trudeauled government is sticking to high immigration levels despite opinion polls showing opposition to the plan because of the housing crunch. “Canada will continue to welcome newcomers and ensure that they are supported in their new lives,” Miller added.

New York: (IANS) A US woman, who fled to India in March this year with her Indian-origin husband, has been indicted by a grand jury in the state of Texas for the murder of her missing six-year-old son with special needs. Cindy Rodriguez-Singh boarded a flight to India with Arshdeep Singh and her six other children just before a welfare check at the family's home in Everman found Noel RodriguezAlvarez missing. Police continue to search for Noel, who was last seen in late October or early November last year in a hospital where his twin sisters were born. Witnesses told police that he appeared "unhealthy and malnourished". Cindy, who "severely abused and neglected" the child, faces charges of capital murder, two counts of injury to a child, and one count of abandoning without the intent to return in the disappearance of Noel, police said.

No arrests have been made so far and investigators are asking people who may recognise the suspects or have information related to the theft to call the Sacramento Police Department. Condemning the incident in a message posted on X, US-based advocacy organisation Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) asked the Sacramento Police "to take this issue very seriously and investigate it as a potential hate crime and the violation of a sacred space". Earlier this year in January, burglars targeted Shri Omkarnath Temple at Brazos Valley in Texas and stole its donation box.

Israel Rejects Ceasefire, Vows To “Fight Until Battle Is Won” HiIndia Newsdesk

The BJP continued to push its development agenda in pollbound Mizoram with Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari asserting on Monday that he would deliver what he declared. Addressing a poll rally in the Dampa constituency under Mamit district bordering Assam, Tripura and Bangladesh, Gadkari talked about the road and bridge infrastructure being created by his ministry in the state, which goes to polls on November 7. He also compared his own track record with other politicians while appealing to the voters to “test” the BJP by giving them an opportunity. Towards the end of his 27-minute speech, Gadkari said: “I am not that type of leader and politician who only declares slogans. In the whole of India, nobody can ask me about my declaration. When I stand to declare anything, I am always going to complete that, that is my track record.”

Israel has refused any ceasefire in its war against Hamas as their ground forces continue to fight the Palestinian Hamas group in the Gaza strip along with aerial bombardments in response to the October 7 terror attack. Missouri-based Nostrum Laboratories and its CEO, Nirmal Mulye, an Indianorigin executive, have agreed to pay a settlement of at least $3,825,000, potentially reaching up to $50 million, to resolve allegations of underpaying Medicaid rebates for their drug Nitrofurantoin Oral Suspension (Nitro OS). This settlement stems from violations of the False Claims Act and is dependent on Nostrum’s financial condition. The allegations revolved around Nostrum’s failure to pay appropriate rebates to state Medicaid programs, diverting resources from vulnerable Americans while seeking profits. The FBI’s Boston field office revealed that Nostrum had improperly calculated the

rebates it owed, even after significantly increasing the cost of one of their drugs. Nostrum had acquired Nitro OS in December 2015, marketing it under its preexisting FDA approval. After temporarily halting production in January 2018 due to non-compliance with updated FDA guidance, Nostrum resumed manufacturing and hiked the drug’s price from $474.75 to $2,392.32 per bottle. Despite being notified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to pay the higher calculated amounts, Nostrum argued that the new version of Nitro OS was a “new” drug, resulting in withheld rebates. The settlement addresses civil claims for knowingly failing to pay required rebate amounts from October 1, 2018, through March 31, 2020.

Travelling in 'Kaali Peeli' taxis was 'liberating' experience: Tannishtha Chatterjee

A

ctress Tannishtha Chatterjee, who is known for films like ‘Parched’ and ‘Angry Indian Goddesses’, and is currently awaiting the release of ‘The Storyteller’ and ‘Joram’, has shared that for her travelling in the ‘Kaali Peeli’ taxis of Mumbai was very liberating. Mumbai's 'Kaali-Peeli' taxis, which have been a symbol of the city for decades, have gone off the roads as per a mandate by the city’s transport department. This comes after the retirement of the legendary red double-decker diesel buses operated by BEST which have defined Mumbai’s landscape for many years. Recollecting her fondest memory, Tannishtha said: “When I first came to Mumbai, I used the Kaali Peeli taxi a lot as I stayed in Kemp’s corner, back in 2005. I have very fond memories of the Kaali-Peeli taxi because the experience in Mumbai was so different for me.” “Coming from Delhi and having used the national capital’s public transport with regards to the taxis or the auto-rickshaws, for me it was very liberating to travel and roam around freely in Kaali-Peeli taxis.” Meanwhile, on the work front, Tannishtha also has ‘Yellow Bus’ in the pipeline in which she shares the screen with Amit Sial. Set against the backdrop of a sand-swept city in the Middle East, 'Yellow Bus' is a poignant drama starring Tannishtha Chatterjee and Amit Sial, in lead roles.

moment where humanity shines through. He told IANS: “There is a demarcation between an artiste and their personality but the greatest glimpses of artistry happen when the lines between the two are blurred. Every great song is about a real person who broke their heart in a moment of truth, isn’t it?” To add contrast, the comedian also spoke up on the ongoing wars across different parts of the world be it Russia-Ukraine or between Israel and Hamas. He said in jest everybody wants to know comedians’ opinion on serious things like these because comedy is not enough apparently for comics. He opined that human beings as a species are cyclical in nature and they keep making the same mistakes that they committed in the past. “We as a species don’t learn from our mistakes in the past, we are of cyclical nature, I would say. We keep coming back to our ingrained behavior.” But he has a glimmer of hope, “Having said that, I’m optimistic because with every passing decade, we lift more people out of poverty, we educate more people and we document more humanity. The field of medicine and bioscience for instance, has shown tremendous growth. We do identify more principals and values for the future,” he concluded. Vir Das’s ‘Landing’ is streaming on Netflix.

It’s always great when there is that scope for collaboration. For this song, we wanted a Turkish feel. So, we changed a few harmonies and I gave my inputs and designed my ideas. Because I have that freedom to be expressive on the mic, it’s great to collaborate with him.”

“I’m volunteering at Akshardham, amassing spiritual wealth in the form of contentment and inner peace to pass on to my daughter.” Akash Patel, a 39-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, reflects on his upbringing and the importance of leaving a meaningful legacy for his daughter. Despite facing financial challenges, Akash worked his way up the corporate ladder, eventually joining Ernst & Young. He decided to volunteer at Akshardham, a spiritual place, during a two-week vacation. This experience led him to realize that material wealth

“One of the things we gain from serving is spurts of inspiration from those around us that help us grow.” Yesha Shah, 27, of Skokie, Illinois, volunteered for three days in 2019 but when she returned to pharmacy school, she missed the fulfillment she had felt while volunteering. She took a 1.5-year leave to continue volunteering to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She served as colead of the rebar team. Inspired by the virtues of her teammates, Yesha strove to serve humbly, accept criticism positively, and develop patience. Reflecting on the impact of her time volunteering, Yesha said, “I used to get very easily hurt if someone pointed out my mistakes. Over the last year, I stopped dwelling so much on the external factors I can’t change and chose to focus on things that I can change in myself. This has helped me feel more at peace with myself.”

Inspired by the spiritual atmosphere, he and his wife, Vandana, made a life-changing decision to move to NJ and volunteer at Akshardham while raising their daughter, Prapti. Akash’s journey highlights the importance of imparting moral and spiritual values to the next generation, valuing inner peace, and leaving a lasting legacy beyond material wealth.

“The best way to improve myself, I think, is by seeing the good in all.” Harmiksha Patel, a 24-year-old registered nurse from Brampton, Ontario, lost her father, Snehal, to cancer in 2020. When presented with an opportunity to serve in the Akshardham construction project, she initially hesitated but ultimately chose to volunteer, as she felt that her dad would be so happy if he knew I was volunteering at Akshardham. For nearly a year, she served in the Akshardham’s inner sanctum, cleaning, treating, repairing, and

“Every stone we place, every stone we dip, is an offering to God.” As a 10-year-old, Nilkanth Rao, 40, accompanied his father, Ramesh, to Kandla, Gujarat, where artisans carved stones for the BAPS mandir in London. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was visiting, and he addressed the artisans, which Nilkanth remembers vividly. Inspired by his father’s years of volunteering in mandir construction, Nilkanth began serving on the Akshardham site in 2012 and joined full-time in January 2022, taking a year’s sabbatical from his work as a manager at Accenture Federal Service. He weatherproofed, cut, clamped, placed, and repaired stones throughout the Akshardham campus. Nilkanth’s volunteering has taught him to imbue all his actions with spirituality. “With the right sentiments, there is no real difference between physical service on site and devotion we offer in the mandir. Every stone we place, every stone we dip, is an offering to God.”

grouting stones. Harmiksha worked with a sense of reverence that expanded over time. “Every stone, every part of this mandir is touched by God, and so are the people building it: these volunteers have done so much for my guru, and we are all connected because of him. Volunteering in Akshardham has lessened the gap between me and the people around me.” She wishes to bring this attitude home and learn to recognize the beauty in all people.

A new report cites that a record number of Indians are entering the US illegally through the US-Mexico border. According to the Wall Street Journal, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Hindu nationalist policies” and success stories from those who have made the

The WSJ also states that there has also been an influx of smugglers masquerading as travel agents across villages, especially in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana. According to data compiled by US Customs and Border Protection, roughly 42,000 migrants from India have crossed the southern border illegally during the fiscal year starting last October through September. Hasan Minhaj Addresses New Yorker's Fake Racism Accusations in Video

Indian American stand-up comedian Hasan Minhaj Zofeen Maqsood

Throughout the video Minhaj convincingly argues that he did not cross a line while citing a couple of other incidents mentioned through his shows NEW YORK, NY- Indian American stand-up comedian Hasan Minhaj has released a new video in his trademark style – sharp wit with dollops of reasoning to answer back to a New Yorker article about him that accused him of exaggerating stories on his stand-up comedy shows. Minhaj begins the video by saying: ““I’m aware that even talking about this now feels so trivial.” He goes on, “But being accused of fake racism is not trivial. It is very serious, and it demands an explanation.” Through a series of reasonings and even proofs he goes on to prove that none of the stories from his personal life that he told about during his shows was imagined. Infact, these were real events that affected the course of his life. He starts the video by addressing an incident related on his show Homecoming King where he talked about being dumped on the night of his senior prom because his at that time white girlfriends’ mother told him she didn’t want the rest of the family to see her pictured with a brown boy. The article claimed that the incident happened days before the prom where his date turned him down. Minhaj admits that the incident happened days before the dance, but says he was rejected because of his race. Minhaj also shared an email from the girl, protecting her identity to prove his point of the story. Throughout the video Minhaj convincingly argues that he did not cross a line while citing a couple of other incidents mentioned through his shows.

The collaboration between American youth and the Indo-US Lions team brought a unique cultural blend to the project. The 300 young participants were divided into smaller teams, each responsible for specific aspects of recycling. These teams were formed based on age groups and interests, ensuring that every participant could contribute effectively. Numerous recycling stations were established at key locations, such as schools, parks, and community centers, to facilitate the collection and segregation of recyclable

materials. Each station was equipped with bins and educational materials to guide people on what could and couldn’t be recycled. Education played a pivotal role in this initiative. Workshops and seminars were organized to educate both the participants and the community about the importance of recycling and its positive impact on the environment. Visual aids, presentations, and hands-on activities were used to make learning engaging and accessible to all. The collaboration with the Indo-US Lions team brought an international perspective

to the project. Cultural exchanges and discussions allowed participants to gain a broader understanding of environmental issues and solutions across borders. This recycling initiative has left a lasting impact on the community and participants alike. Plans are in place to make this an annual event, with hopes of expanding its reach and impact in subsequent years. It has set a powerful example of how young people can come together, transcend cultural boundaries, and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

FBI Alerts The Public To Growing Threat Of Financial Sextortion Targeting Minors HiIndia Newsdesk

LOS ANGELES,CA— The FBI has issued a warning about a significant increase in financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting young victims online. These schemes primarily target males aged 14 to 17 but can affect any child. Offenders typically operate from outside the United States. Online predators use various tactics to exploit vulnerable children, including those who access the Internet through online gaming, gaming consoles, live streaming, video platforms, instant messaging apps, and social media. These offenders often employ “catfishing” tactics, impersonating children of a similar age to gain a victim’s trust. They may send explicit content to add credibility to their fake relationships or hack legitimate accounts. Predators may ask children to switch to different platforms for video calls or chats, pressuring them to share explicit images or engage in inappropriate activities. They then capture this material without the child’s knowledge.

These offenders often employ “catfishing” tactics, impersonating children of a similar age to gain a victim’s trust. If the child resists, offenders sometimes create fake explicit images of them or hack their social media accounts to access existing compromising content. In financially motivated sextortion schemes, offenders threaten to release

explicit material unless victims send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other payments. In some cases, they share explicit content with family or friends, even after receiving payment. Some offenders create additional material to manipulate and control their victims. Victims often feel alone, embarrassed, and afraid to seek help, which can lead to self-harm or suicide. Male victims, in particular, have been identified as at risk. It’s crucial for children to understand that

Pappas: School Districts Raise Cook County Property Taxes

tax year due to a change in state law, allows schools and other taxing bodies to recover money that was refunded to property owners whose assessments were lowered by the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board, state courts or county offices. Recapture accounted for $203.7 million countywide for 2022, a $72.7 million increase from last year.

HiIndia Newsdesk

CHICAGO, IL- An analysis of Cook County’s 1.8 million property tax bills for 2022 shows that school districts are chiefly responsible for hefty tax bills that are due Dec. 1, according to Treasurer Maria Pappas. The median residential tax bill in the north and northwest suburbs increased 15.7%, the largest percentage increase in at least 30 years, an analysis of tax bills found. These higher tax bills are the result of increased levies — the amount of money sought by taxing districts — and a shift of the tax burden onto homeowners from businesses as a result of reassessments in the northern suburbs. Treasurer’s Office researchers Hal Dardick and Todd Lighty led the analysis. Pappas hired the former Chicago Tribune investigative journalists to head up her office’s think tank. The analysis is the latest addition to the Pappas Studies, a series of examinations of the complex property tax system available at cookcountytreasurer.com. Key findings of the analysis show: • Of 940 taxing agencies in the county, 676 — or 71.9% — increased taxes. • The amount of taxes billed to property owners countywide rose more than $909 million from $16.7 billion to $17.6 billion, a 5.4% increase over 2021. Homeowners are shouldering $599.1 million, or twothirds of the increase, while commercial properties are picking up one-third and owe an additional $314.4 million. • In newly reassessed north and northwest suburbs, taxes rose $331 million — with a $387 million, or 12.9%, increase on residences and a $56 million, or 2.7%, decrease on commercial properties. • In the south and southwest suburbs, taxes rose $173 million from $3.88

once an image or video is sent, it’s out of their control. To protect children from these dangers: • Be cautious about sharing personal information and passwords online. • Be wary of strangers online and block or ignore messages from them. • Remember that online personas may not reflect real identities. • Be suspicious if someone you meet online suggests switching to a different communication method. • Encourage children to report suspicious behavior to a trusted adult • If you suspect sextortion: • Contact your local FBI field office or visit fbi.gov for contact information. • Report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (ic3.gov) or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (1-800-THE-LOST or Cybertipline.org). • Do not delete any communications before law enforcement reviews them. • Share details with law enforcement to aid potential prosecution and prevent further victims.

billion to $4.06 billion. Residential taxes increased $98 million, or 4.1%, from $2.4 billion to $2.5 billion, while taxes on commercial properties increased $75 million, or 5.1%, from $1.48 billion to $1.56 billion. Cook County is divided into three areas for reassessments: the city of Chicago, north suburbs and south suburbs. The county assessor calculates new values for properties in each region once every three years, a process known as triennial reassessments. Property values are one factor in the complex property tax system. Local units of government set tax levies that determine how much money they need to operate. The assessed values of properties and amounts of levies determine the tax rates, which vary widely among communities. State law allows school districts to hike taxes by the prior year’s increase in the consumer price index, or 5%, whichever is less. Because the CPI increased by 7% in 2021, school districts were allowed a 5% increase. But the overall percentage increase was higher, partly due to a new provision called recapture. Recapture, which took effect in the 2021

Significant increases in the amount of money the city of Chicago and Chicago Public Schools said they needed to operate, coupled with the recapture provision and higher tax increment financing district bills, boosted the overall property tax burden in Chicago by $410 million from $7.65 billion to $8.1 billion. That broke down as a $296 million, or 7.8%, increase on commercial properties and a $115 million, or 3%, increase on residential properties. Chicago Public Schools recaptured $50.8 million for the 2022 tax year. As a home rule municipality, the city of Chicago is unable to recapture taxes, as the state law applies only to non-home rule communities. The Treasurer’s analysis revealed that throughout Cook County in 2022, the amount owed to tax increment financing districts increased $124.6 million from $1.43 billion to $1.56 billion. TIF district increases account for about 13.7% of the overall rise in what property owners across the county owe. Second Installment 2022 tax bills are set to be mailed Nov. 1 and are due Dec. 1. Property owners who don’t wait to wait for their bills to arrive in the mail can pay their taxes online now at cookcountytreasurer.com. Partial payments are accepted.
