Wesleyan University: Top US college says it will end 'legacy' admissions

so-called legacy admissions, long criticised as a perk for the white and wealthy.

It cited the Supreme Court's recent ruling that race could no longer be considered as a factor in admissions.

A vast majority of Americans are against legacy admissions. Supporters of legacy admissions processes argue that that practice helps create an active alumni community and encourages donations to universities.

Stanford head to resign after data manipulation probe

Wesleyan University, an elite US liberal arts college, says it will no longer grant preference to student applicants with family or donor ties.

The Connecticut institution said it was "important" to end

In a statement on Wednesday, Wesleyan University President Michael Roth said "an applicant's connection to a Wesleyan graduate indicates little about that applicant's ability to succeed". For that reason, he said, such ties have played a "negligible" role in the university's admission process. Mr Roth also said that Wesleyan will continue to value its "ongoing relationships that come from multi-generational Wesleyan attendance".

But there would be no legacy "bump" in its selection process from now on, he said.

ITServe Urges H-1B Quota Increase Amid US Skill Shortage

The president of Stanford University, one of the top-rated colleges in the US, is stepping down after its board found scientific papers he published contained manipulated research data. Marc Tessier-Lavigne did not personally falsify any of the research, the panel concluded, but he coauthored papers with "serious flaws" . The inquiry found "repeated instances of data manipulation" in labs he ran. The president said he would step down "for the good of the University". His term at the institution will end on 31 August.

America's relationship with India is stronger than ever: White House

One day after French President Emmanuel Macron criticised her appointment because of her nationality, the American candidate to become one of the European Union’s chief economists will now not take up the position because of the political controversy it stirred, the bloc announced on Wednesday.

In a letter to the EU’s executive Commission released early on Wednesday, Yale economics professor Fiona Scott Morton wrote that she had “determined that the best course of action is for me to withdraw and not take up the Chief Economist position” in the department that oversees competition and anti-trust policy.

America's relationship with India is stronger than ever, the White House said Wednesday nearly a month after the historic Official State Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States.

"The visit last month was extremely successful and important. Travis King: US soldier in N Korea had been held after fighting in Seoul

Seoul: (IANS) South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will hold a trilateral summit with his US counterpart Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at Camp David, near Washington, on August 18, sources said on Thursday. The three leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen deterrence against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats during the summit at the US presidential retreat in Maryland, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Travis King, the American soldier who fled to North Korea, had been detained for getting into fights in South Korea before he crossed the border.

Court documents showed he also damaged a police car and had recently spent time in a detention facility in Seoul.

The 23-year-old serviceman had been recently released and was being sent back to the US when he escaped.

He joined a tour of the Joint Security

Area and fled into North Korea, which has not commented so far. It remains unclear what his intentions were for crossing the border. US authorities have said that he did so "wilfully, of his own volition" and expressed concern about his wellbeing. Private 2nd Class (PV2) King's mother Claudine Gates told ABC News she could not imagine her son doing such a thing. He "had to be out of his mind", she said.

Egypt president pardons rights activist

Egypt's president has pardoned jailed rights activist Patrick Zaki and lawyer Mohammed alBaqer, state media report. The news comes a day after an emergency court found Mr Zaki guilty of "spreading false news" and sentenced him to three years in prison. The judgement, based on an article he wrote about his life as a Coptic Christian, was widely condemned. Mr Baqer represented pro-democracy activist Alaa Abdel Fattah before they were jailed on the same charge in 2021.

60,000 tons of grain destroyed in Russia's attack on Odesa port: Kyiv

Agriculture minister Mykola Solsky said on Wednesday that a "considerable" amount of grain export infrastructure at Chornomorsk port in Ukraine's Odesa region had been damaged in a Russian attack.

The attack also destroyed 60,000 tons of grain at the port that should have been loaded and shipped via the Black Sea Grain Initiative 60 days ago, he said.

"The night-time attack put a considerable part of the grain export infrastructure in the port of Chornomorsk out of operation," Solsky said on the Telegram messaging app. Russia attacked Odesa and nearby Chornomorsk after quitting a deal on Monday that allowed the safe passage of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

Indians in Germany hold peaceful protest calling for baby Ariha's repatriation

New Delhi: (IANS) Braving heavy rain, the Indian community in Frankfurt held a peaceful protest urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to save a two-year-old Indian child who has been living in foster care in Berlin for over 20 months.

The community called for repatriation of Ariha Shah who has been living in foster care since September 23, 2021 after the German authorities accused parents, Dhara and Bhavesh Shah, of abusing the child.

Holding banners and placards that read, 'Ariha is Indian', the crowd was seen chanting, "Modiji Save Ariha!" in a video tweeted on Saturday by Save Ariha, a campaign run by volunteers across the globe for the child's repatriation to India.

"Today, Indian community in Frankfurt,

Germany held protest against the injustice happening with Indian baby Ariha in Germany," the tweet, which was shared along with the video, read.

"Despite heavy rain, they stood strong, demanding repatriation of Ariha Shah and asking @PMOIndia... Modiji Save Ariha! Ariha is Indian," the tweet said. Last month, Berlin's Pankow local court granted Ariha's custody to the German state while dismissing the parents' contention that the injury sustained by

their child was "accidental".

Reacting to the verdict, Ariha's parents said they have full faith that Prime Minister Modi and Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar will bring their child back to India. "From today, we hand over Ariha to 140 crore Bhartiyas," the parents said in a statement. Calling it a "very delicate matter", Jaishankar had raised the issue during wide-ranging discussions with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock in December 2022.

"We have concerns that the child should be in her linguistic, religious, cultural and social environment. This is her right. And our embassy is pursuing the matter with German authorities, but it was also a subject which I had brought up with the Minister," Jaishankar had said at a joint media briefing.

Opposition alliance ‘INDIA’ sets tone for Lok Sabha polls with ‘Jeetega Bharat’ tagline

New Delhi: A day after the Opposition front of 26 parties chose INDIA as its name, Jeetega Bharat (India will win) has been finalised as the tagline of the coalition that aims to take on the BJP in the 2024 general election.

The final decision on the tagline was taken following detailed consultations late last night. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, now chief of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), had suggested that the Opposition alliance should have a Hindi tagline.

The name INDIA - Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance -was finalised during the Opposition’s twoday conclave in Bengaluru that ended yesterday. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the 2024 Lok Sabha election will be a “Modi versus INDIA” battle. “The fight is between NDA and INDIA, Narendra

As the Opposition went into a huddle in Bengaluru, the BJP held a parallel show of strength in Delhi with representatives

from 39 parties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on the Opposition front, saying that alliances “built on negativity have never won”. “When an alliance is dynastic and corrupt, the country will lose,” he said. To counter the INDIA name, the Prime Minister spoke of “Bharat” and said the NDA represents the poor and the backward classes. The Opposition’s move to create a tagline around “Bharat” appears to be an attempt to blunt the BJP’s “Bharat vs India” line of attack. The name INDIA, Opposition leaders have said, was the result of extensive brainstorming.

Announcing the name, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader yesterday said, “BJP, can you challenge INDIA? We love our motherland, we are the patriotic people of the country, we are for farmers, Dalits, we are for the country, for the world... INDIA will win, our country will win and BJP will lose.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board wasn’t entirely happy as the ICC announced the revenue share percentages of the USD 600 million pool. The BCCI expectedly got the biggest chunk, earning a whopping USD 230 million, which comes out to be 38.5 percent of the overall ICC revenue. The PCB, on the other hand, got 5.75 percent of the overall sum, earning USD 34.51 million in the 2024-27 cycle.

Bengaluru: Five suspected terrorists were arrested in Bengaluru today by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for allegedly planning a terror attack in the Karnataka capital. The police are on the lookout for another suspect, Junaid, from Bengaluru’s RT Nagar area, whose current whereabouts are unknown, however, according to the police, the man is believed to be settled abroad and is the mastermind behind providing arms and explosives to the five arrested.

The five in custody -- Suhail, Omar, Zahid, Mudasir and Faisal -- all from Bengaluru and aged between 25 and 35, were previously arrested in 2017 and were in jail for 18 months in connection with a murder case before being released in 2019. The CCB has also seized explosive materials from the suspects’ possession. They were also carrying guns and daggers. According to Bengaluru Police Commissioner Dayanand B, the five were radicalised by Nazeer.

The latest ranking published by Henley Passport Index, released on Tuesday, puts India’s passport at the 80th spot, moving it up five places from its position in 2022. Indians can now travel to 57 destinations without a visa. India’s current rank ties it with countries like Togo and Senegal. While Indian passport holders have visa-free access and visa-on-arrival access to countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Rwanda, Jamaica, and Sri Lanka, they still need a visa to enter 177 destinations across the world. Some of these countries include China, Japan, Russia, the United States, and European Union Countries.

'Love, Sex aur Dhokha 2' begins its shoot with Dibakar Banerjee at the helm

The filming of 'Love, Sex aur Dhokha 2' started in full-swing on Monday. The film is a sequel to the 2010 cult classic 'Love, Sex aur Dhokha', which was directed by Dibakar Banerjee and is regarded as one of the highly experimental films in Hindi cinema.

'LSD 2' explores the complexities of relationships and sheds light on the hidden facets of modern-day love in a world where Internet is a necessity. Building upon the legacy of the first film, 'LSD 2' pushes the boundaries and promises to be even more explicit, ensuring an edgier and deeply immersive experience for the audience. The film is touted to be laced with

a gripping narrative and compelling performances, and will delve deeper into the themes of love, betrayal, and the consequences of the word driven by technology.

The makers announced that the film is flagging off its shoot on social media.

National Award winning director Dibakar Banerjee is at the helm of affairs and promises a compelling story like the first part of the film.

However, the details with regards to the cast have been kept under the wraps. Presented by Balaji Telefilms Limited and Cult Movies, 'Love, Sex aur Dhokha 2' is produced by Ektaa R Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor. The film is slated to hit theatres on February 16, 2024.

Arshad Warsi confirms that "Welcome 3" is being made, with a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, and Paresh Rawal. He also reveals that he will be part of "Jolly LLB 3" alongside Kumar, after missing out on the second installment.

Amidst a barrage of rumours and unverified reports, HT City finally brings to you a confirmation, from the horse’s mouth: Yes, Welcome 3 is being made! Arshad Warsi, much loved in his comedy roles as he is for his dramatic ones, tells us the same as he lounges around in his bungalow, dressed in a comfortable tee and shorts.

“The scale of Welcome 3: the cost, the climax, is unreal. It is an insanely larger than life theatrical film which I will be a part of. It has me, Akshay Kumar, Sanju (Sanjay Dutt), Paresh Rawal and lots of other people,” he beams. We reach this finding when we ask why we haven’t seen much of Warsi much on the big screen in the last couple of years. On OTT, however he tasted success with Asur’s second season released recently. The 55-year-old says, “The whole scenario has changed in cinema. Now all the movies releasing in theatres are superhero films. They are huge, larger than life, it’s bizarre. I am seeing myself that way. To do a small bit in these big films, I don’t fancy that. For me, job satisfaction is most important. These are films which will pay me tonnes of money. The ones I have got offered, I didn’t fancy very much. The one I am doing is Welcome 3.” While he “doubts” but doesn’t “negate” Munnabhai 3 being made, he spills the beans on another franchise film he is doing: Jolly LLB 3, which brings him and Akshay together. “We start shooting in January. It is one of those films that tell you the truth of how things run in the world, good versus bad,” he says. It almost feels surreal that the first one starred him, second one had Kumar, and the third brings both of them together. It wasn’t meant to be like this though.

Why did he go missing from Jolly LLB 2? “I have no idea,” Warsi replies, “I have a feeling the makers wanted to upscale the film. I remember I told Subhash (Kapoor, director) also ‘You should do it with Akshay. If you want to show crowd in a courtroom, with me it will be 500, with Akshay you will get 5000’ Somewhere, the production people realised ‘let’s get a bigger star’... People liked to see me, so I am back. People will enjoy seeing me and Akshay.”

In November 2022, the Adani group had emerged as the highest bidder for the redevelopment of Mumbai’s Dharavi, one of the largest slum clusters in the country, with an initial investment commitment of Rs 5,069 crore, against a base price of Rs 1,600 crore.

R Ashwin finished with 12 wickets in the match as India beat West Indies by an innings and 141 runs in the first Test at Windsor Park.

After debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 171 enabled India to declare with a lead of 271, Ashwin picked up 7 for 71 as West Indies folded for 130 on the third evening.

With the pitch offering plenty of turn and bounce for spinners, Rohit Sharma had Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja operating in tandem after the fourth over of West Indies’ second innings. The duo didn’t take long to make an impact and, using around-the-wicket angle, they ran through West Indies’ top order.

Ashwin dismissed right-handers

Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood and Jadeja accounted for left-handers Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Raymon Reifer. That reduced West Indies to 32 for 4 despite Ishan Kishan dropping Brathwaite on zero off Jadeja.

Rahul Gandhi condemns PM’s silence as Manipur burns, EU debates

Kamala Harris Makes History with tie-breaking Votes in Senate

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the situation in Manipur and the European Parliament discussing it, saying he has not uttered a word on either of these.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who has been attacking the government over its handling of the situation in Manipur, also slammed

the Centre. Taking to Twitter, Gandhi said, “Manipur burns. EU Parliament discusses India’s internal matter. PM hasn’t said a word on either!” “Meanwhile, Rafale gets him a ticket to the Bastille Day Parade,” he added. Targeting the Centre, Ramesh said, “In January 1977 Richard Nelson a noted economist at Yale University published a very influential essay called The Moon and the Ghetto. It became required reading for people like me in graduate school. Nelson poses the question: why is it that a technologically dynamic America is able to land man on the moon but is unable to meaningfully address its problems at home especially in the inner cities.” “It is a deeply thought-provoking analysis not without its relevance to us too,” the Congress leader said.

VP Kamala Harris, is no stranger to making history and now she has done it again by matching the record for most tie breaking votes in the senate. On Wednesday, her 31st vote, advanced the nomination of Kalpana Kotagal to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The only other vice president to cast so many such votes was John C. Calhoun, who was vice president from 1825 to 1832. Harris’s predecessor Mike Pence cast a total of 13 tiebreaking votes during his tenure.

Indian-American sentenced to life for killing 3 teens over doorbell prank

New York, July 17 (IANS) A 45-year-old Indian-origin man has been sentenced to life without parole for his role in the January 2020 car crash that killed three teenage boys in California who had pranked him by ringing his doorbell and running away.

Anurag Chandra was convicted of three counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders was found true by the jurors in a Riverside County courtroom this April. It took a Riverside County jury only three hours to return guilty verdicts against Chandra, a District Attorney Office release said last week.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi Introduces HIRE Act: Boosting H-1B Visa and STEM Funding

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) has introduced the High-Skilled Immigration Reform for Employment (HIRE) Act, designated as H.R. 4647. The primary objective of this act is to enhance the competitiveness of the United States by addressing the skills gap, which refers to the disparity between the skills needed by employers to fill available jobs and the skills possessed by potential employees. To bridge this gap, the HIRE Act proposes two key measures.

Firstly, the act suggests increasing funding for science, technology,

engineering, and math (STEM) education programs in U.S. elementary and secondary schools. By providing additional resources to strengthen these programs, the aim is to develop a skilled

domestic workforce that meets the demands of the job market, particularly in technology-related sectors. Secondly, the HIRE Act proposes doubling the number of H-1B visas available annually. The H-1B visa program allows American employers to hire foreign workers in specialized fields, such as technology, where there may be a shortage of qualified domestic candidates. Currently, the H-1B visa program offers 65,000 visas per year, but the HIRE Act seeks to increase this number to 130,000. This expansion would enable American employers to attract and recruit top talent from around the world, contributing to the country’s technological advancement.

Elderly Victims Lose $1 Billion In Crypto Scams During 2022, Reveals Latest Data

WASHINGTON, DC- The FBI has issued a warning regarding a new scam specifically targeting older Americans. Recent data from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reveals that a growing number of senior citizens have become victims of cryptocurrency scams. Michael Balboni, former Homeland Security adviser for the state of New York and President of Redland Strategies, noted that many of these scams originate from Southeast Asia. In 2022 alone, senior victims lost over a billion dollars to cryptocurrency fraud, marking an 84% increase in losses compared to the previous year. The majority of these scams were investment-related, with an average loss of $35,000 per victim. Balboni explained that scammers often initiate contact out of the blue, posing as investment professionals and enticing their targets with claims of impressive

cryptocurrency valuation increases, such as 250%. What makes this crime particularly concerning is that over half of individuals aged 60 and older admitted to having little to no knowledge about cryptocurrencies. Balboni emphasized that scammers employ aggressive tactics, often establishing a personal relationship with their victims. They create a sense of urgency by pressuring victims to act quickly, citing limited investment windows, and may even

attempt to leverage retirement accounts, banking information, or pension details. To protect oneself, the FBI advises people to be cautious of unsolicited messages, emails, and social media posts promoting investment opportunities or giveaways. Balboni provided three red flags to watch out for: First, if the message is unsolicited and appears suddenly without any prior request. Second, if there is a sense of urgency or pressure associated with the investment offer, pressuring the individual to act swiftly. Third, if the scammer requests something of value or personal information from the victim. These three signs are indicative of a potential scam. It is important to remember that once scammers obtain the requested information, they can swiftly and irreversibly take the victim’s money. Retrieving the funds becomes almost impossible within a matter of minutes or even seconds.

The release stated that the boys were having a sleepover and ultimately dared one of the friends to do a “doorbell ditch,” so they drove to a nearby house, according to an investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Once there, one of the boys rang the doorbell of a home on Modjeska Summit Road and ran back to the Prius. Chandra, who lived at the home, chased after the Prius in his 2019 Infinity Q50. As he pursued the victims, he re-ended the Prius, and sideswiped their vehicle until they were forced to stop. The Prius made a U-turn to escape, however, Chandra continued his pursuit. Ultimately, as both vehicles approached Squaw Mountain Road, Chandra increased his speed to 99 mph, then intentionally rammed his car into the back of the Prius, causing it to veer off the road and into a tree.

Hindola Utsav Enthralls Devotees At Hindu Mandir Of Lake County

National Hindu Advocacy Day On The Hill

GRAYSLAKE, IL- The Hindu Mandir of Lake County in Grayslake, IL, celebrated the special Shravan Masa Hindola Utsav, also known as the swing festival, with great enthusiasm on Sunday, July 16, 2023. The event witnessed the participation of numerous devotees and their family deities. The tradition of Hindola can be traced back 5000 years to Vrindavan, where Mother Yashoda and the Gopis joyfully swayed Lord Krishna on a beautifully decorated swing.

The program commenced with the Lord Ganesh Pujan and the sponsorship Sankalpam, conducted by the temple priests, Pt. Anil Joshi Ji, Pt. Balaji Gopal, and Pt. Radha Krishna. Following the rituals, a special ceremony called Shri Krishna Abhishekam took place, during which Lord Krishna was bathed with various fresh homemade juices and saffron milk. The deity was then adorned with exquisite clothing and ornaments, while Rita Patel and Pt. Devaraj Joshi Ji sang devotional songs (Bhajans), accompanied by Kamalesh Desai and Atul Soni.

Devotees fervently rocked the idol of Lord Krishna on a beautifully decorated swing, immersing themselves in devotion and divine joy. The gentle back and forth motion of the swing evokes a sense of heavenly bliss, transporting one away from the mundane worries of the world and into the realm of spirituality.

Pt. Joshi Ji eloquently narrated the story of Hindola

Utsav to all the devotees. He explained that Ma Yashoda organized the Hindola Utsav when Krishna ventured into the forest for the first time to graze the cows. Anticipating his return, she arranged fresh fruits and juices for Krishna and the other cowherd boys (Gopas), ensuring they would be refreshed after their endeavors. In the serene forests of Vrindavan, Ma Yashoda and the Gopis lovingly swayed Lord Krishna on a beautifully decorated swing. During this time, all the celestial beings, including Devi and Devatas, took the form of birds and animals to witness Ma Yashoda’s pure love for her child. The central message conveyed to the devotees was that nature is created by the Lord, and everything that grows within it belongs to Him.

Therefore, it is essential to offer everything to the Lord before consuming it. This principle applies to all food grains, fruits, and anything else we consume throughout the year. Devotees brought their family deities to partake in the grand scale Hindola Utsav, embodying the concept of all Devi and Devatas attending Lord Krishna’s Hindola Utsav. Pt. Joshi Ji blessed all the devotees, wishing them a happy and long life.

Following the Maha Mangalarati, the temple offered Maha Prasadam, consisting of fresh fruits and juices such as lassi, Aam Panna, Thandai, Kichadi, and yogurt, to all the devotees as a divine blessing.

On Tuesday, the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) organized an event titled ‘National Hindu Advocacy Day on the Hill’ at the Capitol Hill. The event was attended by both Republicans and Democrats. Some of the lawmakers who were. Artisans Rally Behind Hindu Mandir In New Jersey As False Conspiracy Claims Dismissed

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ- Recently, an alleged conspiracy against the construction of a Hindu temple in America has come to light. Advocates Hemant Nahta and Aaditya SB Soni, representing the labor unions Bharatiya Majdoor Sangh and Patthar Gadhai Sangh, have made statements regarding this conspiracy. According to them, certain religious stone carving artisans, who were initially involved in the conspiracy, have now come forward to expose it. These artisans were volunteers working on the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA.

Advocate Aaditya SB Soni, authorized to represent more than 25 artisans, stated that 12 of the volunteers were coerced into becoming plaintiffs in a civil complaint filed in a New Jersey court. The complaint alleged human trafficking, and as a result, the FBI entered the temple premises on May 11, 2021, to remove these volunteers. The police took away 110 out of the 134 artisan volunteers from the temple site. However, some of these artisans have since contacted Advocate Aaditya SB Soni and revealed that they were misled into making the complaint by an advocate named Swati Sawant, who operates in the USA. These artisans now

wish to withdraw from the complaint. The artisans have strongly asserted that they have never experienced any pressure, casteism, or discrimination at BAPS temples in India or the USA.

Biden Unveils Innovative Legal Migration Initiative

They volunteered willingly to serve in America, considering it their service to God and country. They have clarified that they were treated with love and respect at the BAPS Swaminarayan temple where they served and were provided with support and facilities, including travel arrangements, accommodation, clothing, healthcare, and provisions for their families in India. Advocate Aaditya SB Soni has stated that the artisans were initially afraid to reveal the truth due to threats made by Swati Sawant and some of their fellow artisans, who claimed they would report them to the American police, leading to their

imprisonment. Swati Sawant allegedly convinced the artisans to make false allegations in court by enticing them with promises of American citizenship and large sums of money.

Upon realizing the true nature of the conspiracy and the false allegations they were expected to make, many artisans regretted their decision and wished to return home to India. Some managed to gather the courage to leave the FBI’s custody and return home, despite Swati Sawant’s attempts to persuade them otherwise. A few artisans who had initially filed false cases against the temple in civil courts also realized they had been misled and chose to withdraw their complaints. They sought the assistance of Advocate Aaditya SB Soni to inform the American courts and attorneys of their decision. The artisans have voluntarily withdrawn their claims in court, but the submission of the withdrawal to the court is pending, as their previous attorneys were informed three weeks ago but have not yet taken action.

To support their claims, the artisans have provided notarized affidavits, videotaped interviews, and statements in the presence of their advocates. These serve as evidence of their account of the events.

Social Security Receives Significant Boost For 2024

WASHINGTON, DC- The Biden administration has announced the establishment of a new immigration program called the Family Reunification Parole Process. This program aims to provide a legal alternative for certain Central Americans and Colombians who wish to enter the United States, in an effort to discourage unlawful border crossings.

Under this program, eligible migrants from Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras who have relatives who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents will be granted work permits. These migrants will be allowed to fly to the United States and obtain work permits, provided their U.S. citizen or green card holder relatives have filed visa applications on their behalf. The program gives priority to adult children, siblings of U.S. citizens, and children and spouses of permanent residents. It is designed to expedite the immigration process, offering an alternative to the family-based visa system which can be slow and has numerical limitations.

Initial estimates suggest that over 70,000 individuals may qualify for the program immediately. While the Biden administration aims to welcome up to 100,000 migrants through this initiative, a specific timeline for achieving this goal has not been provided.

The Family Reunification Parole Process is part of a larger government effort to address the challenges at the U.S.-Mexico border by providing a safe and orderly alternative to unlawful border crossings. In the past year, the Biden administration also introduced a humanitarian parole program for migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. This program allows eligible individuals from these countries to apply for U.S. travel authorization without having to leave their home countries. The Biden administration credits these parole programs with a noticeable decrease in unlawful border entries since the expiration of the pandemic-era policy known as Title 42 in May. Daily unlawful border crossings, which reached a peak of 10,000 before the end of Title 42, have recently dropped to below 4,000.

It’s important to note that there are still three more months of data that need to be analyzed before the COLA is officially announced in October. Ved Prakash -- the Indian American dubbed as the Worst Landlord in New York

Residents of Jamaica, a neighborhood in New York City's Queens borough, have taken legal action against their landlord, Ved Prakash, for subjecting them to unlivable conditions. In a lawsuit filed last week, tenants alleged that their building is infested with mice and roaches, and the elevator is broken. This is not the first time Prakash has faced accusations of poor maintenance from his tenants. In the recent lawsuit, six tenants claimed that Prakash ignored their requests to address issues such as mold, roaches, mice, and a lack of heating for the past 12 years.

Chhaya CDC, a non-profit organization that assists low-income communities with housing, along with other nonprofits, supported the tenants in filing the lawsuit. They commended the tenants for their courage in standing up to the landlord and demanding better living conditions, highlighting the importance of tenant rights and community action.

Prakash, an Indian American real estate owner, has gained notoriety as the "worst landlord" in New York. His history includes multiple lawsuits and violations. In 2016, he faced a lawsuit from 38 tenants for various violations at his building on Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Additionally, one of his tenants fell ill with a rare disease transmitted through rat urine. In 2017, Prakash was sued for refusing to accept Section 8 vouchers as housing payment, a violation

Kamala Harris Makes History With Tie-Breaking Votes In Senate

Born into a poor family in Punjab, India, Ved Prakash came to the US as a teacher. To make ends meet he swept the floors and worked as a security guard of the city's Human Rights Law. He has also been listed as one of the worst evictors and was subject to a federal lawsuit in 2021 for wage theft, including allegations of failing to provide pay stubs to his workers as required by the Wage Theft Prevention Act.

Born into poverty in Punjab, India, Prakash embarked on a journey to the United States in search of a better life. Initially working as a part-time high

school physics teacher, he supplemented his income by working overtime, including night shifts at a factory. With determination and frugality, Prakash and his wife saved diligently to purchase a house in Jamaica, Bronx, and eventually transitioned into real estate. By 2016, he owned around 70 buildings in the city, primarily in the Bronx area. As complaints and accusations against Prakash continue to mount, attention is drawn to the need for improved living standards and accountability within the rental housing sector. The ongoing lawsuit serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by tenants and the significance of community action in demanding fair treatment and livable conditions.

Gov. DeWine Launches Ohio's EV Charging Network

COLUMBUS, OH- Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine recently made an announcement regarding the future installation of 27 new electric vehicle charging stations along Ohio interstates. This initiative marks Ohio as the first state in the nation to reveal the charging station sites that will be developed under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program.

The plan entails the addition of 27 fast-charging stations approximately every 50 miles along three major interstates: Interstate 71, Interstate 74, and Interstate 75. These stations will be strategically located near gas

stations, stores, and restaurants, and will be operational 24 hours a day. It is anticipated that the new charging infrastructure will be operational by the following year.

Governor DeWine expressed his enthusiasm for Ohio’s position as a leader in electric mobility, stating, “This is an exciting time for Ohio as we continue to lead the charge in electric mobility.” He further emphasized that the statewide network of chargers will facilitate the accommodation of EV drivers in Ohio, as well as visitors who come to explore the attractions offered by the state.

Essential Guidelines

For Navigating Medicaid Redetermination By NAPCA

Recently, NAPCA’s Senior Assistance Center has received several calls regarding Medicaid Redetermination. We want to share some of the questions in this month’s column. If you have additional questions on Medicare, Medicaid, Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace, Social Security Retirement Benefit, Supplemental Security Income, or COVID/Flu vaccination, there are 3 ways you can reach us today Call our Senior Assistance Center at: (English) 1-800-336-2722,

Email: askNAPCA@napca.org

Mail: NAPCA Senior Assistance Center, 1511 3rd Avenue, Suite 914, Seattle, WA 98101

What does Medicaid Redetermination mean?

Prior to the pandemic, states were required to renew coverage for people with Medicaid coverage at least once a year and to disenroll individuals who no longer qualified for coverage. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress acted to ensure Americans did not lose access to critical health care by preventing states from terminating a person’s Medicaid coverage, even if they no longer qualified. Now that the PHE (public health emergency) has ended, federal law requires states to restart regular Medicaid renewals. This means that over the next 12 months, everyone with health care coverage through Medicaid will renew their coverage. What do I need to do for Medicaid Redetermination?

For people with Medicaid coverage:

• UPDATE your contact information with your state Medicaid agency.

• RESPOND to the Medicaid renewal form when it arrives to keep your coverage.

• CONSIDER OTHER COVERAGE OPTIONS: If you are no longer eligible for Medicaid, check if you can get coverage through your employer, through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace at HealthCare.gov, or through Medicare.

What do I do if I lose Medicaid coverage though the Redetermination process?

If you are no longer eligible for Medicaid, you can transition to another form of health coverage, such as the Affordable Care Act Marketplace, employer-sponsored coverage, or Medicare. You can reapply for Medicaid to find if you still qualify. Some options open their own Special Enrollment Period and Signup timeframe window. Please contact us if you have any questions about the SEP.

"Making history that I did today, it's the happiest moment of my life. I think it's not going to change for a long time. Beating Novak, winning the Wimbledon championship is something that I dreamt about since I started playing tennis. That's why it is the biggest moment of my life," Alcaraz said in a post match press

conference.

"Beating Novak at his best, in this stage, making history, being the guy to beat him after 10 years unbeaten on that court, is amazing for me. It's something that I will never forget, that's for sure," the Spaniard later added. Alcaraz further said he hopes his victory can inspire the next generation on Tour.

"It's great for the new generation, as well, I think to see me beating him and making them think that they are capable of doing it, as well. It's great for me and I think for the young players, as well," he said. With his Tour-leading 47th win of the season, Alcaraz became just the fifth man in the Open Era (since 1968) to win multiple major titles before turning 21.

"I am a totally different player than Roland Garros,” Alcaraz said. “I have grown up a lot since that moment. I learned a lot from that moment. As I said before the final, I took a lesson from that match. I did something different before the match. I prepared a little bit different mentally before the match. I could deal with the pressure, the nerves, better than I did at Roland Garros.

ED Diverts Attention from Opposition Meet with TN Minister Raid: Stalin

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) was carrying out raids on Monday at the premises of Tamil Nadu minister K Ponmudi, chief minister M K Stalin said and added this was part of the tactics of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre to divert attention from the meeting of

opposition parties in Bengaluru. Stalin said their meetings to get rid of the BJP has become a major irritant for the ruling party at the Centre and that it was now using the ED in Tamil Nadu like it has been doing in the northern parts of the country. “But the DMK [Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam] is not worried about it,” Stalin said before leaving for Bengaluru for the second two-day meeting of the non-BJP leaders.

Congress not interested in the post of prime minister, vows to protect democracy: Mallikarjun Kharge

New Delhi: Top leaders of 26 Opposition parties have gathered in Bengaluru to decide on the contours of the front that will take on the BJP next year. The formal talks will take place today from 11 am to 4 pm.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said his party wasn’t interested in power or the Prime Minister post. Taking aim at the BJP, he said the ruling party’s president and party leaders are “running from state to state” to patch up with old allies. “We are 26 parties, in government in 11 states; BJP didn’t get 303 seats by itself, used votes of allies then discarded them,” he said at the meeting. Sources said one of the name being considered for the Opposition front is IN - D - I - A (Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance). However, Left parties have sought reconsideration of the word ‘alliance’. The leaders, who gathered in Bengaluru,
