Trump’s Iran Gamble

Peace Hopes Rise, But War Threat Still Looms

White House signals possible breakthrough with Tehran even as Trump warns of renewed bombing if talks collapse

Washington: Donald Trump has raised hopes of a possible peace deal with Iran after pausing “Project Freedom”, the US naval mission launched to protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The move briefly eased oil market fears and sparked speculation that Washington and Tehran may be close to an agreement.

But Trump quickly warned that if negotiations collapse, US bombing operations could resume “at a much higher level and intensity”.

According to Reuters and Axios, American and Iranian negotiators are discussing a 14-point memorandum aimed at ending hostilities. The proposal

reportedly includes reopening shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, easing sanctions on Iran and limiting Tehran’s nuclear programme. Talks are believed to involve mediators in Pakistan, with discussions linked to meetings in Islamabad. However, uncertainty remains high.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier declared that “Operation Epic Fury” against Iran was over, boosting

Trump Briefly Pauses Project Freedom On

Pakistan Request, Blockade Continues

Trump said he was pausing the 'Project Freedom' for a short period to give space for US efforts to finalise a settlement with Iran.

Washington: Donald Trump has temporarily paused “Project Freedom”, the US military operation escorting stranded ships through the Strait of Hormuz, saying progress had been made in talks with Iran.

Trump said the pause followed requests from Pakistan and other nations to allow time for a possible peace agreement. However, he stressed that the US blockade of Iranian ports would continue.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “Operation Epic Fury”, the recent American military campaign against Iran, had ended for now. He added that lasting peace depends on Iran limiting its nuclear programme and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to China for talks with Chinese officials. Tensions remain high in the Gulf. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned of action against ships using unauthorised routes, while the United Arab Emirates reported intercepting missiles and drones allegedly launched from Iran. Despite renewed diplomacy, uncertainty remains over whether Washington and Tehran can reach a final agreement. Key disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme and control of the vital oil route continue to block a lasting settlement.

hopes of diplomacy.

Still, Iranian officials rejected reports of a near-final deal. Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei called the proposal a US “wish list” and warned Tehran was ready for escalation if necessary. Experts cautioned that previous USIran negotiations have often collapsed at the final stage. Shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz also remains limited due to fears of further attacks.

Iran Reviewing US War Proposal, Key Issues

Still Unresolved

Iran said it is reviewing a new US proposal aimed at formally ending the ongoing war, though major disputes remain unresolved. The proposal reportedly seeks to reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, ease sanctions and place limits on Iran’s nuclear programme.

US President Donald Trump said talks with Tehran had been “very good” over the past 24 hours and claimed a deal was possible. However, he earlier warned that American bombing operations could restart if negotiations failed. Sources linked to mediation efforts in Pakistan said both sides were close to agreeing on a one-page memorandum to end the conflict formally.

US Targets July 4 To Deploy Qatar-Gifted Jet As Air Force One

A high-stakes race to modernise the US presidential fleet has entered a decisive phase as the United States moves closer to adding a luxury Boeing 747, originally gifted by Qatar, to the Air Force One programme ahead of major national celebrations.

Washington: The United States Air Force is targeting a Fourth of July delivery for the aircraft, which officials say could be ready in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary. A US official and program source said the jet, accepted in 2025, is undergoing rapid upgrades to meet presidential security standards.

The aircraft is being modified by L3Harris Technologies, with work including communications upgrades, defensive systems and anti-missile protections required for presidential travel.

If timelines are met, the jet could be ready even earlier, potentially aligning with US President Donald Trump’s birthday on June 14.

However, the gift has triggered political controversy, with critics raising concerns over foreign influence and ethics, while the White House has defended the decision.

The move comes as Boeing’s official next-generation Air Force One replacement programme faces significant delays, with delivery now expected only by 2028, far behind schedule.

Hantavirus outbreak

3 dead, 150 stranded: Inside the luxury Atlantic cruise facing a rare ‘human-to-human’

Hantavirus outbreak on MV Hondius has killed three passengers, with WHO probing suspected human-to-human transmission and quarantine measures underway.

Three passengers have died and several are ill after a suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius near Cape Verde. The ship carried about 150 people from 20+ countries.

The World Health Organization confirmed one case and several suspected infections. Victims include a Dutch couple and a German passenger; a British patient is in intensive care.

Passengers are isolated in cabins as medical teams test and manage the outbreak. No rodents were found, raising concern of rare human transmission. Hantavirus causes severe lung disease with high fatality.

WHO says overall public risk is low but under watch.

Iran Mandates Email Approval for Hormuz Passage

Iran's parliament is considering legislation that would formalise restrictions on vessels tied to Israel and the United States.

New Delhi: An e-mail permitting transit will be a pre-condition for ships to pass through the all-but-closed Strait of Hormuz, per a local report.

The state-run Press TV quoted Iranian authorities, which said the "sovereign governance system" now in effect in the strategic chokepoint, through which 20 per cent of the world's oil passes. Under this system, shipping companies planning to navigate the chokepoint will now receive electronic instructions from an address affiliated with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA). These communications will detail specific "updated rules and requirements for passage" that must be followed by all international vessels. Ships would be required to adjust their operations and obtain a "transit permit" before entering the waterway, which remains all but shut since a war erupted in the region after US and Israel attacked Iran.

US Pushes China on Hormuz Before Trump–Xi Talks

Strait of Hormuz crisis sees US urging China to pressure Iran ahead of Trump-Xi summit, with global oil supply and diplomacy at stake

The US is urging China to press Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz before talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing. Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked Beijing to use Iranian minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to push Tehran.

Rubio said Iran’s actions risk global isolation and harm China most, given its reliance on Middle East oil. The US is also lobbying China at the UN to support action against Iran after earlier vetoes with Russia.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged China to back efforts to reopen the route. Trump said China helped secure a fragile ceasefire but must do more.

The strait’s closure disrupts global trade. Taiwan and security tensions may also feature in the summit.

Pak Army Backed Hafiz Saeed, Masood Azhar: 2025 War Claim

Pakistan's Terror Link: This admission tears into Islamabad's "nonstate actor" facade and how Islamabad has been providing institutional support to terror networks under the guise of "freedom fighting"

In Islamabad, a Pakistani politician has publicly tied the army to militant groups ahead of the anniversary of Operation Sindoor.

Shaheer Sialvi said the army honored militants killed in Indian strikes on Muridke and Bahawalpur—sites India labels terror hubs. He claimed soldiers led funerals, carried coffins, and gave formal military honors, presenting the dead as “freedom fighters.”

Speaking at an event linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Sialvi also said the army fought for Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar during the 2025 conflict. A video of the remarks has circulated widely.

Pakistan has long denied backing such groups, calling them “non-state actors.” These statements contradict that stance and suggest direct institutional support.

Earlier, a commander linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed made

similar claims, alleging senior army officials attended funerals of militants killed in the strikes.

India launched Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam attack, targeting militant infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistanoccupied Kashmir. The action triggered a brief military clash between the two countries.

Sialvi also said he had met Hafiz Saeed, reinforcing claims of close ties between political figures and militant networks. The remarks may strain Pakistan’s global position, especially as countries push for stronger action against terror financing and safe havens.

They could also impact diplomatic ties with India, where such admissions are likely to be cited as proof of crossborder support to militancy.

With tensions still sensitive, these disclosures risk deepening mistrust and complicating any future dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Air Force Video Marks Op Sindoor Anniversary

Marking the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force shared a video highlighting the 2025 strikes carried out in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir. The footage showcased precision strikes on terror and military infrastructure across the border, carried out using advanced missiles, drones and glide bombs. In its post, the IAF stated “India forgets nothing. India forgives nothing,” reaffirming its stance that those responsible for terrorism and their backers will be identified and punished, while calling Operation Sindoor a continuing symbol of “precise action and lasting deterrence.”

Burj Khalifa Builder Praises Indians’ Work Ethic

Mohamed Alabbar, the founder of Emaar Properties and the developer behind the Burj Khalifa, has praised Indian professionals for having the strongest work ethic in the world. Speaking at the Make It in the Emirates summit, Alabbar said his preference for hiring Indian talent stems from their consistency, dedication, and willingness to go the extra mile. He noted that many Indian employees remain accessible even at unconventional hours, reflecting a deep sense of responsibility toward their work. According to him, success in business is less about intelligence and more about sustained effort and attention to detail. He emphasised that hard work goes beyond putting in long hours, it involves carefully evaluating opportunities, taking calculated risks, building the right teams, and ensuring disciplined execution. "I always tell people, from my own perspective, my IQ is average, but my hard work is the best. I believe in hard work," he said, as per Gulf News.

Bengal Post-Poll Violence: Suvendu Aide Killed

Chandranath Rath, a close aide of Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead after his car was intercepted by motorcycle-borne attackers. He was reportedly shot at close range and died on the spot.

Post-poll violence in West Bengal escalated sharply on Wednesday night when Chandranath Rath, executive assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in the Doharia area of Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas.

Police said Rath was returning home to Barasat around 10.20 pm when his car was intercepted by motorcycle-borne attackers. A gunman approached the vehicle and fired multiple rounds at close range, killing him instantly. His driver was seriously injured and admitted to hospital in Kolkata.

Authorities described the incident as a planned attack and have launched an investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage and conducting

searches to trace the assailants. The killing comes amid widespread post-poll unrest in the state, following the BJP’s electoral gains that ended 15 years of TMC rule. Officials said over 200 FIRs have been registered and more than 400 arrests made in connection with violence, threats and assaults across West Bengal in recent days. Political reactions were sharply divided. BJP leaders condemned the murder and accused the ruling establishment of failing to control violence, while the TMC denied involvement and demanded a courtmonitored investigation, calling for strict action against those responsible. Chicago Liquor Store Targeted for Third Time in 3 Months

Store owner Anil Patel said this is the third attempted theft in recent months, including a previous incident where an ATM was stolen.

A Gujarati-owned liquor store in Chicago’s Lincoln Park has been targeted by thieves for the third time in three months, highlighting rising concerns over repeated break-ins at businesses with video gaming machines.

According to police, three suspects broke the glass door of the Lincoln Park Food and Liquor Store around 3:15 am and entered the premises. They were seen on CCTV smashing video gambling machines with hammers and attempting to access cash trays. Cigarettes, liquor and lottery tickets were also stolen before the suspects fled in a white sedan.

Store owner Anil Patel said this is the third attempted theft in recent months, including a previous incident where an ATM was stolen. He added that repeated losses and damage have forced him to consider removing the gaming machines entirely.

Police said investigations are underway, and similar theft patterns have been reported across several Chicago suburbs targeting stores with gambling machines.

Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and tracking suspects, but no arrests have been made so far.

US Dismisses Viral Claim on ‘Kamikaze Dolphins’ in Hormuz

The idea was first reported by the Wall Street Journal on April 30, with an article claiming that Iranian officials had said Iran could use "mine-carrying dolphins" to attack US warships.

Reports suggesting that Iran may use “kamikaze dolphins” against US naval forces in the Strait of Hormuz have been dismissed by US defence officials as unverified and exaggerated. The claim, first circulating in media reports, alleged that Iran could deploy mine-carrying dolphins to target American ships involved in maritime operations linked to “Project Freedom”. However, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected the idea, saying there is no evidence that Iran possesses such capabilities. Officials stressed that while Iran has demonstrated drone and missile

activity in the region, the dolphin-related claim is not supported by intelligence assessments. They also noted that the US Navy itself operates a long-standing marine mammal programme used for underwater mine detection, not combat

attacks.

The controversy comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, where US-led naval operations and Iranian counter-moves have repeatedly raised fears of escalation.

Team Trump officials reiterated that Washington’s focus remains on securing commercial shipping lanes and preventing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which carries a significant share of global oil trade. Military analysts say the dolphin claim reflects growing information warfare surrounding the conflict, rather than confirmed battlefield capability.

US Boy Faces Deportation as Father Refuses DNA Test

A 12-year-old boy in the U.S. is facing deportation after his American father refused to undergo a DNA test required to prove paternity. Despite submitting affidavits and documents, authorities have denied his citizenship application without genetic proof.

The boy, born outside the U.S. to a Nigerian mother, had applied for citizenship claiming his father is a U.S. citizen. However, immigration officials insist on DNA verification, especially under stricter rules introduced after 2025.

With his application rejected and visa overstay issues, deportation proceedings have begun. Experts warn more such cases may emerge if parents refuse DNA confirmation, leaving children at risk despite citizenship claims.

US Trade Deficit Widens to $60.3 Billion in March 2026

The U.S. trade deficit rose to $60.3 billion in March 2026, up 4.4% from February, despite record exports. Data from the Commerce Department shows exports reached $320.9 billion, while imports climbed higher to $381.2 billion. The situation comes after tariffs were struck down by the Supreme Court, altering trade dynamics.

Experts say continued high imports and global uncertainty may keep the U.S. trade gap elevated in the coming months.

Vivek Ramaswamy Wins Ohio GOP Governor Nomination

Vivek Ramaswamy won the Republican nomination for Ohio governor on Tuesday, putting the staunch ally of Donald Trump on a path to running the Rust Belt state. In unofficial results, he defeated Casey Putsch, a car designer with an automotivethemed YouTube channel, for a place in the general election, according to US media reports.

Congress Backs Vijay, Sets ‘No Communal Allies’ Condition

In Chennai, the Indian National Congress has extended support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the next government—on one condition: no alliance with “communal forces.”

State leaders confirmed full backing, provided the coalition stays committed to constitutional values. The move adds five MLAs to TVK’s strength. With about 112 seats, Vijay still needs a few more to cross the 118 majority mark. To secure numbers, TVK is in talks with parties like VCK, CPI, and CPM. Their support could push the tally past the halfway mark and ensure government formation. At the same time, outreach to AIADMK leadership signals active negotiations across camps. Congress said the partnership is based on shared responsibility and could extend to future elections.

In the recent polls, TVK emerged as the largest party, breaking the long dominance of DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s rise has reshaped Tamil Nadu politics, but forming a stable government now depends on alliances—and meeting Congress’s key condition.

Iran

says it wants a 'comprehensive agreement' with US

Trump claims 'great progress' toward agreement, pauses ship escorts through Hormuz

Iran said it will accept only a “fair and comprehensive agreement” in talks with the U.S. to end the Middle East war. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stressed protecting national interests. U.S. President Donald Trump claimed “great progress” and paused a naval operation in the Strait of Hormuz to support negotiations, though blockades remain.

The strait, vital for 20% of global oil supply, has been largely shut since February, triggering an energy crisis. Oil prices dipped on hopes of a deal. Despite a fragile ceasefire, tensions remain high. The U.S. insists Iran cannot control the strait, while Iran defends its rights under international law. Further talks are uncertain.

An alliance with the Congress adds five more MLAs in Vijay's favour but the TVK would need the support of six more MLAs to cross the halfway mark

Walking may feel effortless, but small mistakes can quietly reduce its benefits and even lead to long-term strain. Correcting these habits can transform a simple walk into a powerful health tool.

1. Thinking Walking Doesn’t Count

Many people underestimate walking, treating it as too “easy” to be effective. In reality, brisk walking improves heart health, supports weight control, and reduces diabetes risk—just like more intense workouts.

The key is consistency over intensity. Even short daily walks build endurance, improve circulation, and enhance mental well-being over time.

2. Walking Too Slowly

A very slow pace may feel comfortable but doesn’t challenge your cardiovascular system enough. Experts suggest aiming for 100–130 steps per minute, where breathing becomes slightly deeper but still manageable. This pace improves fat burning, heart strength, and stamina. A simple trick: swing your arms faster—your legs will naturally follow.

3. Using Your Phone While Walking

Constantly looking at your phone pulls your head down, straining your neck and upper back. It also reduces awareness of your surroundings, increasing the risk of trips or falls. Beyond physical strain, it takes away the mental relaxation walking provides. Walking without distraction helps reduce stress, improve mood, and sharpen thinking.

4. Leaning Forward

A forward-leaning posture—often caused by long hours of sitting—puts extra pressure on your knees, hips, and feet. It also reduces your body’s ability to move efficiently. The ideal posture is upright with your head aligned over your shoulders. Imagine a straight line from your ears to your ankles. This alignment improves breathing and muscle engagement.

5. Not Using Your Glutes

Many walkers unknowingly “fall forward” instead of actively pushing off the ground. This shifts stress onto the knees instead of using stronger muscles.

The 10 Most Common Walking Mistakes

Walking is the most natural exercise we know—simple, accessible, and deeply effective. Yet, what seems effortless is often done incorrectly. From posture to pace, small mistakes can quietly reduce the benefits of walking and even increase strain on joints and muscles. Health experts now say that how you walk matters just as much as how much you walk. Research involving over 110,000 people shows that walking around 8,700 steps daily can cut overall mortality risk by 60%, while even 7,100 steps significantly reduce heart disease risk. But poor technique can limit these gains. According to physical therapist Milica McDowell and cardiologist David Sabgir, most walkers unknowingly develop habits that reduce efficiency and increase long-term wear and tear.

Proper walking involves engaging your glutes (hip muscles) to push your body forward. This reduces joint strain, improves power, and

strengthens your lower body over time.

6. Poor Arm Movement

Arms are not just passive—they play a

key role in balance and rhythm. Keeping arms stiff or clasped behind your back disrupts coordination and reduces walking efficiency. Instead, let your arms swing naturally and slightly faster than usual. This helps maintain momentum and improves overall body movement.

7.

Shuffling Your Feet

Dragging your feet or taking very short steps increases the risk of tripping and reduces the body’s ability to absorb impact. A proper stride should follow a natural pattern: heel strike → roll → toe push-off. Lifting your feet slightly higher and stepping confidently improves stability and reduces joint stress.

8.

Wearing the Wrong Shoes

Footwear plays a critical role in walking comfort and safety. Surprisingly, over 60% of adults wear the wrong shoe size.

Tight shoes can cause bunions and pain, while loose shoes increase fall risk.

Choose shoes with:

• Proper fit (not too tight or loose)

• Good arch support

• Moderate cushioning (not overly soft)

Also, replace shoes regularly—wornout soles can lead to injuries.

9. Ignoring Toe Strength

The big toe plays a major role in balance and forward movement. Weak toe muscles can lead to instability and increase fall risk, especially with age.

Simple exercises like toe lifting, gripping, or “toe yoga” can strengthen these muscles.

Improving toe strength enhances walking efficiency and overall balance.

10.

Walking the Same Way Every Day

Walking the same flat route at the same speed may feel comfortable, but it limits physical progress.

Your body adapts quickly, reducing the workout’s effectiveness.

To improve results:

• Add hills or stairs

• Walk on grass or uneven surfaces

• Include short bursts of faster walking Variety not only challenges your body but also keeps your mind engaged.

Mamata Banerjee Calls Defeat “Immoral”

As the Trinamool Congress (TMC) trailed behind the BJP through the day in West Bengal, the final nail came as the day ended — party chief and outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost to the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes in Bhabanipur.

Speaking to reporters outside the counting centre, Banerjee alleged that the BJP had “looted more than 100 seats”, adding that it was an “immoral” and “illegal” victory.

“BJP looted more than 100 seats. The Election Commission is the BJP’s commission,” she said, adding that she had complained to the chief electoral officer, but no action was taken.

Iran to US: Drop Demands, End War Priority

Iran signalled that it is open to talks to bring the conflict to a close, but only if Washington reduces its demands regarding Tehran, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei making that clear on Monday. “At this stage, our priority is to end the war,” he said during a televised briefing.

“The other side must commit to a reasonable approach and abandon its excessive demands regarding Iran.”

US Destroys 6 Iranian Small Boats

The US military said on Monday it destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted Iranian cruise missiles and drones as Tehran sought to thwart a new US naval effort to open shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump launched the operation, called Project Freedom, on Monday as he sought to wrest control of the critical waterway from Iran, which effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz after the US and Israel started the conflict on February 28.

New dawn: PM Modi calls for ‘badlav’, not ‘badla’

Thanks people of 4 states and one UT on voting for stability of governance amid ongoing global uncertainties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the election results “historic,” saying they signal a new phase for West Bengal and reaffirm trust in developmentdriven politics.

Addressing workers at BJP headquarters, he thanked voters across several states for choosing stability amid global uncertainty. He said democracy in India is not just a system but a living tradition, and that the Constitution and institutions have emerged stronger.

Modi noted that Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance governments now rule over 20 states, guided by citizen-first governance. He promised rapid development in Bengal,

invoking Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s vision of a strong state. He assured improved safety for women, jobs for youth, and strict action on infiltration. Welfare schemes like Ayushman Bharat would be prioritized. Citing Rabindranath Tagore, he envisioned a fearless, confident Bengal.

US strikes Iranian fast boats as Tehran attacks UAE oil facility

The United States has struck seven Iranian “fast boats” in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran has been accused of attacking an oil facility in the UAE, according to the BBC.

US President Donald Trump said, “We’ve shot down seven small boats or, as they like to call them, ‘fast’ boats. It’s all they have left.”

The US military said helicopters were used in the strikes. Iran denied that any such attack took place.

At the same time, the UAE reported that its key oil port at Port of Fujairah was hit, causing a fire and injuring three people.

Officials said air defences intercepted

The US military said helicopters were used in the strikes. Iran denied that any such attack took place.

missiles and drones during the incident. The developments come as Washington tries to move stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz under what Trump has called “Project Freedom”.

Shipping firm Maersk told the BBC that one of its US-flagged vessels safely exited the Gulf with American military support. The company said the transit was “completed without incident, and all crew members are safe and unharmed.”

Trump said the US was helping vessels that were “locked up in the Strait of Hormuz” and described them as “neutral and innocent bystanders”, the BBC added.

Earlier, the US said its naval ships had moved through the strait, but Iran rejected the claim. Iranian officials said they had fired warning shots at a US warship, something Washington denied.

Modi urged political parties to abandon violence and embrace change over revenge. He also criticized the opposition, including Indian National Congress, All India Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party, accusing them of blocking women’s reservation and warning of electoral consequences.

Suvendu Adhikari Warns:

“Akhilesh Next”

New Delhi: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, bouyant from historic victories in West Bengal's Bhabanipur and Nandigram on Monday, said the party's next focus is on the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. "Mamata (Banerjee), Tejashwi (Yadav), Rahul (Gandhi) finished, Akhilesh (Yadav) is next," he said, in a reference to the Samajwadi Party chief, who will be the main challenger to the BJP when Uttar Pradesh goes to polls next year.

Canada Declares Khalistani Extremists "National Security Threat"

Ottawa: Canada's intelligence agency has declared Khalistani extremists a "national security threat", adding that the group uses institutions to promote its "violent extremist agenda" in the country. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service, in its 2025 Public Report, highlighted that the involvement of Canada-based Khalistani extremist (CBKE) in violent activities "continues to pose a national security threat to Canada and to Canadian interests." Khalistani extremist groups demand the creation of a sovereign state within India and are designated as terrorist organisations by New Delhi because of their involvement in separatist activities.

Iran Warns US as Hormuz Tensions Rise

Iran has warned it may attack US forces in the Strait of Hormuz after Donald Trump said American military will escort stranded ships. Tehran called any foreign military entry a threat, while the US plans “Project Freedom” to guide vessels stuck due to the blockade. Trump described the move as humanitarian, citing shortages on ships. The standoff follows US-Israel strikes on Iran and its retaliation, despite a ceasefire and stalled talks. With hundreds of vessels still affected, tensions remain high in a key global oil route.

Actor-turned-politician, Vijay is set for a big win in Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026. Actor Vijay's new party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is leading in over 100 seats and the AIADMK-led alliance leading in over 71 seats. The ruling DMK in alliance with Congress and DMDK has taken a third spot with lead in over 50 seats. In West Bengal, where people voted for 294 seats, it is a battle between the Trinamool Congress helmed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has crossed the half mark and is leading in 206 seats, according to trends. Mamata Banerjee's party on the other hand, is leading in over 80 seats.

The election holds importance for two reasons - first, Bengal has long avoided the BJP. And second, Mamata Banerjee has waged a war against the Election Commission over the voter roll clean-up exercise Special Intensive Revision (SIR) that removed 89 lakh voters - roughly 11.6 per cent of the state's electorate. The figure is slightly more than the winning margin of the Trinamool Congress in 2021.

"BJP's Bengal win will soothe Shyama Prasad Mukherjee's soul. He dreamt of a prosperous Bengal. And this time was unrealised for years. And now the people of Bengal have given the BJP an opportunity," said PM Modi. "Bangla e poriborton hoygeche (there is a wave of change in Bengal now)," he said.

Mamata Alleges BJP Plot, Says

“They’ll Show Results First”

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in her first statement to the media amid counting of votes in the West Bengal assembly election has accused the BJP of carrying out a "plan". The trends show the BJP coming to power in Bengal for the first time.

The Bengal chief minister in a video statement said she knew and had even predicted that the BJP would first show their results as part of a plan, but she and her party would "fight like the cubs of a tiger."

Trump Says US Will Ensure Safe Passage in Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump said the United States may begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz even as talks with Iran show progress.

Trump said “very positive discussions” are ongoing after Iran proposed a 14-point plan to end the conflict.

Despite this, he announced “Project Freedom,” under which the US will guide vessels safely through blocked routes starting Monday.

The crisis began after US-Israel strikes on Iran on February 28, followed by Iranian retaliation. A ceasefire took effect on April 8, but talks remain stalled after one round in Islamabad. Iran continues to control the Strait, disrupting global oil and gas supplies, while the US has imposed a counter-blockade.

US President Donald Trump said Sunday that "very positive discussions" were under way with Iran on finding a solution to the crisis, but nevertheless added that the United States will soon start escorting ships through the blocked Strait of Hormuz.

Trump called the escort mission a “humanitarian gesture,” noting many ships are stranded with limited supplies. Over 900 vessels remain in the Gulf, down from 1,100 at the start of the conflict. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical trade routes. A large share of global energy supplies passes through it daily. Any disruption affects oil prices and supply chains worldwide. Iran’s control of the passage has tightened pressure on global markets. Shipping delays have raised costs and increased uncertainty for countries dependent on energy imports. The US move signals both strategic and humanitarian intent. While aiming to ease congestion and support trade, it also increases military presence in an already tense region.

TMC–BJP Clash During Repoll in Bengal

The Election Commission had ordered the repoll due to allegations of election malpractice

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress and BJP supporters clashed today in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas amid repolling at 15 booths, officials said.

Visuals from the area showed people from both sides in a chaotic scene. The 15 booths are in two assembly constituencies in South 24 Parganas. The repolling began this morning without any incident in 11 polling stations in Magrahat Paschim assembly seat and four in Diamond Harbour. The Election Commission had ordered the repoll due to allegations of election malpractice. The clashes happened amid protest by residents in Falta in the district, alleging threats and intimidation by Trinamool workers ahead of counting of votes scheduled on Monday. "Trinamool's Israfil Chowkidar has threatened us that if these people win, they will burn our houses and carry out bloodshed," a female resident told news agency ANI.

India Tests New Disaster Alert System on Citizens’ Phones

India has launched a new emergency alert system, and millions felt it on Saturday when their phones buzzed with a loud “Extremely Severe Alert.”

The government confirmed it was only a test and no action was needed.

The system was introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah and Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on May 2, 2026. It runs on SACHET, a homegrown platform built by Centre for Development of Telematics using global alert standards.

Built by C-DOT and operated through the SACHET platform, the system can instantly reach all compatible devices in a targeted area during disasters, overriding silent and do-not-disturb settings.

Unlike SMS, this Cell Broadcast system cuts through silent and do-not-disturb modes. It sounds a sharp alarm and shows a clear message on screen, ensuring people notice it instantly.

Authorities have already sent over 134 billion SMS alerts in 19 languages during disasters. This new system improves speed and reach. It will warn people about earthquakes, tsunamis, lightning, gas leaks, and other emergencies. Once fully active, alerts will reach all mobile phones, helping authorities act fast and keep citizens safe.

Donald Trump is increasing the tariffs charged on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25% in a sharp escalation of trade tensions with Brussels.

The European Commission responded: "We will keep our options open to protect EU interests".

Iran Imposes ‘New Rules’ for Hormuz as US Holds Blockade

Iran released a statement on Saturday, saying it will enforce “new rules” over waters along its coastline in the Arabian Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, making them sources of “security and prosperity for the region”.

The announcement came as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reaffirmed that the US naval blockade of Iranian ports — in response to Tehran’s chokehold on the Strait — will stay in place till freedom of navigation in the crucial waterway is restored to “pre-February 27” levels.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said it will exert “control over nearly 2,000km of Iran’s coastline” and make such water “a source of pride and power for the dear

Earlier this week, Iran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz — the maritime chokepoint accounting for a fifth of global energy trade — if US lifted its blockade, while proposing that nuclear talks be deferred to a later phase, but Washington rejected the proposal. Currently, ships transiting the Strait are being targeted by the IRGC’s fast attack boats, forcing them to navigate through Iran’s territorial waters and pay tolls. A Lloyd’s List report in March said that ships were navigating around Iran’s Larak Island and countries were paying as much as $2 million for each vessel to pass through the Strait safely. Tehran also demanded US recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait and proposed splitting tolls with Oman, arguing that the chokepoint lies in the territorial waters of Iran and Oman.

US Arms Surge to Israel Raises Iran War Fears

A fresh wave of military buildup has intensified concerns of a wider conflict in the Middle East, as the United States significantly increased arms shipments to Israel amid ongoing tensions with Iran.

According to reports, over 6,500 tonnes of military equipment—including air and ground munitions, tactical vehicles, and support systems—were delivered to Israel within 24 hours. The surge comes as the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reviews strategic options and has briefed US leadership on possible next steps. While there is no official confirmation of an imminent strike, the scale and speed of the deployment have triggered

It is a story that inspires and makes you believe in the American Dream.

Chan Patel, came to the U.S. with a desire to excel in academics and secure a respectable job. What he may not have imagined back then in the 1960’s when he first set foot in the U.S. was that he would go on to own dozens of hotels in the U.S. and would also establish the first-ever Indian American owned bank in the U.S. Here's the story of a man who dreamed and went on to become one of the most enduring immigrant success stories in the country.

Humble Beginnings

Chan Patel was born in Mumbai into a family of modest means. During the 1940’s he grew up with his four siblings in a small 8x8 home in India. Despite the limited means, Chan had big dreams and was academically gifted. Patel says, “In 1965 I borrowed $600 from my parents, which was their life’s savings and came to the U.S.” Never the one to take an easy road, Patel managed to secure a spot in some of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country. Patel says, “I studied industrial engineering at the Stanford university and then went on for my masters from the John Hopkins University.”

Chan Patel’s Historic First

From Immigrant to U.S. Bank Owner

Chan Patel is the founder, CEO and Chairman of State Bank of Texas -- the largest Indian-American-owned bank in the U.S. Today the family-run business manages more than $2 billion in assets and a book equity value of $400 million. Patel along with his sons also owns over a dozen hotels across the U.S.

closely monitoring their hotel. Within a few years, Chan went on to own 17 hotels across the U.S. He says, “Whenever I saw an opportunity, I would invest in a hotel and work very hard to make it a success.” Slowly but surely Chan Patels hotel empire was expanding. But there was more ahead

The First-Ever Indian Owned Bank

After his excellent academic records, he says, “I managed to find for himself a respectable job with an International airline and he began his new life in Dallas, Texas.”

Chan has built for himself a successful life in America but the entrepreneur in him had more potential. The First Indian-owned Hotel in Dallas Fort Worth

Chan Patel has more than one pioneering achievements to his career. Back in the late 70’s he was working three jobs to support his family. “In the year 1976, I bought my first hotel called the Alamo Plaza in Dallas Texas. It was also the first hotel to be bought by an Indian in Texas.” How did he venture into the hotel industry while working a corporate job? Patel says, “During the 70’s a lot of Patels’ from Gujarat were working in the hotel industry in the U.S. Many of them owned independent hotels and were doing very good business. When I looked at their career trajectory, I thought to myself that many of these people do not even have a university education, yet they are doing excellent

business. In front of them my paycheck felt small and I thought to myself that if they can be successful, I should be able to do the same too, after all I had two degrees from excellent colleges as well as great work experience.” And hence was born the first family project in the Chan Patel family – the Alamo Plaza in the DFW area. Patel turned out to be a natural businessman and he decided to give his all to the business. He continued his airline job and after two years when the hotel was somewhat stabilized he quit and put all his energies into the hotel. “Like many Patel families establishing themselves in a newer business territory in America, Chan and his wife worked full time at the hotel. They lived and worked there, managed the front desk and personally looked after all the operations. Over the years, they moved out of the hotel for their kids’ schooling but continued very

The first generation of Patels’ who came to the U.S. were instrumental in establishing a community in America. Every time a Patel was able to buy a hotel, he would invite people from his family or extended community to come and help them in the business and show them the way to also invest and try their acumen to work in the hotel industry in America. Around this time, Chan Patel shares, “We were about a dozen or more Patel families and everyone owned hotels in the Dallas area. We would also go to the same bank but I realized that many times I had to sign collaterals for a bank loan for some other families. Even though, they had decent earnings and were honest people they had no credit score because traditionally they were accustomed to spend cash. This led me to an idea – how about opening a bank that could cater to the need of the community.”

A massive undertaking

While Chan Patel wanted to expand his horizons and also cater to the community, opening a bank required a big capital. He says, “To open a bank I needed a capital of $2 million. With everything, I was able to invest $1 million but I needed a million more.” So how did he manage to secure the funds? “I got in touch with some other members of the community as well as acquaintances and friends I had known as a businessman. With ten other people whom I asked to invest 100,000 each we managed to put this dream into reality.”

A Successful Empire

Chan Patel today operates his bank as well as over a dozen hotels across the U.S. with his two sons Sushil and Rajan. The State Bank of Texas ranks among the top performing community banks in the country with assets under $10 billion according to the Texas Bankers Association. A success story that began in a small hotel in Dallas today continues its legacy in the business history of America.

Smarter Choices, Late Recognition

From Taani in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi to Meera in NH10, her filmography reveals range and intent. Her debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan could have reduced her to a decorative role, but she brought emotional depth and realism. In Band Baaja Baaraat, she played a driven, ambitious woman focused on success, not romance. The real shift came with NH10. She not only acted but also produced the film, backing a dark, risk-heavy story at a time when female-led thrillers were rare. It showed her willingness to move beyond safe roles. Her later choices reinforced this pattern. PK gave her mainstream reach, Sultan demanded physical transformation, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil explored emotional independence, and Sui Dhaaga required restraint. Not every film succeeded, but the consistency of experimentation stands out. Her career also challenges how Bollywood evaluates actresses. While she worked with major stars, she used that platform to build her own identity across genres and production. Equally notable is her comfort with stepping away from constant visibility. In doing so, she allowed her work to speak over time. Her journey reflects planning, not chance—proof that lasting impact comes from thoughtful choices, not just presence.

India Alone Gives ‘A’ Rating to The Devil Wears Prada 2

Many viewers who ventured to watch The Devil Wears Prada 2 on Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2, expected an abundance of skin show, intimacy or violence. This is because the film has been certified ‘A’. However, all such fears were put to rest once patrons exited the theatre; after all, there’s nothing even remotely adult in the film, be it in terms of dialogues, scenes or even theme. Almost everyone is unanimous that The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a family-friendly flick and that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) should have awarded it a U/A, if not a ‘U’, rating. the ratings awarded by censor boards across various countries and found that India is the only country where The Devil Wears Prada 2 is restricted to audiences aged 18 and above. Fight Over Birthright Citizenship Now Includes Puerto Rico

WASHNGTON, DC -Since 1898, Puerto Rico’s place within the American constitutional system has remained unresolved. It is neither a U.S. state nor an independent nation, but a territory governed by Congress. This ambiguity has created ongoing legal and political contradictions, now increasingly visible in debates over birthright citizenship. At the center of this issue is the Fourteenth Amendment, which grants citizenship to those born “in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” While this principle has defined American citizenship for over 150 years, Puerto Rico does not fully fit within this framework. Residents of Puerto Rico receive U.S. citizenship primarily through federal law — the Jones-Shafroth Act of 1917 — rather than directly through the Constitution. This distinction highlights a deeper constitutional inconsistency. Puerto Rico is treated as part of the United States in some respects, yet it does not fully participate in its constitutional structure. As policymakers revisit birthright citizenship, Puerto Rico

illustrates how territorial ambiguity complicates national policy. The island’s political future is central to this discussion. If Puerto Rico were to become independent, automatic U.S. birthright citizenship would no longer apply. Citizenship would instead be governed by Puerto Rican law, possibly alongside negotiated agreements with the United States. This would establish a clear constitutional boundary and eliminate the current uncertainty. Independence could also resolve longstanding contradictions. Although Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, they lack full constitutional rights, a situation rooted in early 20th-century legal rulings. A sovereign Puerto Rico would allow its people to define their own political identity and governance. Ultimately, the key issue is whether the United States can sustain this ambiguous relationship indefinitely. History suggests that clarity and consistency are essential. Puerto Rico’s status demands a long-term solution that aligns constitutional principles with political reality.

Missing Indian-Origin Hiker Mystery Deepens After Backpack Found

GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, AZ- A 26-year-old hiker remains missing in Grand Canyon National Park as authorities work to identify a person who turned in his backpack shortly after he was last seen.

Sandarsh Krishna was reportedly seen on the Rim Trail between Bright Angel Lodge and Mohave Point between 4 p.m. on April 27 and midnight on April 28, according to officials with the U.S. National Park Service.

Authorities said a black backpack believed to belong to Krishna was turned in to hotel staff at Bright Angel Lodge around 7 a.m. on April 28.

Lawsuit by Chirayu Rana Meets Firm

Denial from JPMorgan, Executive

Finance professional Chirayu Rana has been identified in media reports as the individual who filed a lawsuit under the pseudonym “John Doe,” accusing a senior female executive at JPMorgan Chase of sexual abuse, racial harassment, and professional retaliation. The allegations have been strongly denied by both the executive and the bank.

NEW YORK, NY– Finance professional Chirayu Rana has been identified in media reports as the individual who filed a lawsuit under the pseudonym “John Doe,” accusing a senior female executive at JPMorgan Chase of sexual abuse, racial harassment, and professional retaliation. The allegations have been strongly denied by both the executive and the bank.

According to a report by the New York Post, the plaintiff identified as John Doe is Rana.

The complaint, filed in New York County Supreme Court, names Lorna Hajdini, a 37-year-old executive director in JPMorgan’s leveraged finance division. It alleges that the misconduct began in spring 2024 after the two started working together.

According to the filing, Hajdini made repeated sexual advances toward Rana and issued threats tied to his career.

The lawsuit quotes her as saying, “If you don’t fk me soon, I’m going to ruin you… I fking own you.”

The complaint further alleges that she made racially charged remarks, including questioning whether management would support “some Brown boy Indian leading originations,”

and threatened to block his promotion if he refused her demands.

It also claims that Hajdini admitted to drugging Rana with Rohypnol and another substance allegedly intended to facilitate sexual encounters he describes as coerced. In another incident described in the filing, Hajdini is accused of forcing sexual contact at Rana’s apartment. When he became distressed, she allegedly said, “Stop f**king crying. You think anyone would ever believe you?”

Hajdini has denied all allegations. In a statement issued through her attorneys to the New York Post, she said she has

“never engaged in any inappropriate conduct with this individual of any kind and has never even been to the location where the alleged sexual assault supposedly took place.”

JPMorgan Chase also rejected the claims. A spokesperson stated, “Following an investigation, we don’t believe there’s any merit to these claims,” adding that the complainant declined to participate in the internal review process or provide supporting evidence.

The bank’s internal investigation, conducted by its human resources and legal teams, included a review of internal communications, according to

media reports.

A report by the Daily Mail noted that parts of the court filing were later withdrawn for corrections. It also reported that Rana filed an internal complaint in May 2025 alleging harassment and discrimination.

Rana’s attorney, Daniel J. Kaiser, said his client has been “devastated personally and professionally” and is seeking damages for lost earnings, emotional distress, reputational harm, and punitive damages, along with workplace reforms. Reports indicate that Rana and Hajdini worked in the same division but reported to different managers.

According to media reports, Rana has previously worked at Houlihan Lokey, Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, and The Carlyle Group. He is also a former Rutgers basketball player and is currently a principal at Bregal Sagemount. Hajdini, who has been with JPMorgan for nearly 15 years, holds a degree in finance and statistics from New York University’s Stern School of Business and has completed executive education at Harvard Business School. She has been described in reports as a “top performer” in leveraged finance.

Bharatiya Temple Inaugurates $8.5 Million Cultural & Learning Center

The Bharatiya Temple has officially inaugurated the Bharatiya Learning Center located at , 1612 County Line Road, Chalfont, PA 18914 , a state-of-the-art cultural and educational facility dedicated to preserving Indian languages, heritage, and values for future generations.

CHALFONT, PA - The Bharatiya Temple has officially inaugurated the Bharatiya Learning Center located at , 1612 County Line Road, Chalfont, PA 18914 , a state-of-the-art cultural and educational facility dedicated to preserving Indian languages, heritage, and values for future generations. The milestone marks the realization of a vision that began in 1999 under the leadership of Shri Nand Todi and a small group of committed community members.

Nearly three decades later, that vision has evolved into an $8.5 million institution—symbolizing the growth, unity, and resilience of the Indian-American community. The project stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Temple’s Board of Directors and the tireless efforts of volunteers, donors, and supporters whose collective dedication turned a dream into a lasting legacy.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony drew more than 300 attendees, including elected officials, community leaders, and families from across the region. The strong turnout reflected the increasing recognition

and influence of Indian-American institutions within the broader civic landscape.

Among the distinguished guests were U.S. Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick and Montgomery County Commissioner Neil Makhija, along with several state and local representatives. Addressing the gathering, Congressman Fitzpatrick emphasized the vital role cultural institutions play in strengthening the American fabric, noting that communities that preserve their heritage contribute meaningfully to the nation’s diversity and unity.

Commissioner Makhija echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of such centers in bringing families together and ensuring younger generations remain connected to their cultural roots.

Shri Nand Todi, Founder and President of Bharatiya Temple, reflected on the journey, stating, “This Learning Center represents nearly three decades of vision, perseverance, and community unity. It will serve as a place where heritage is preserved, values are nurtured, and future generations stay deeply connected to their cultural identity.”

Currently serving nearly 200 students each week, the Bharatiya Learning Center offers instruction in seven Indian languages—Sanskrit, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil. Guided by the Sanskrit principle “Vidya Dadati Vinayam”— knowledge imparts humility—the center focuses not only on academic learning but also on fostering cultural awareness and character development. For many families, the center represents a “home away from home,” where traditions are upheld, festivals are celebrated, and community bonds are strengthened.

The inauguration comes at a meaningful moment as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, highlighting the essential role immigrant communities play in shaping the nation’s cultural and civic fabric. Recognition of the Bharatiya Cultural and Learning Center in U.S. Congressional records further underscores its significance as a model for cultural preservation, education, and community engagement.

Sizzle & Sell: The Ultimate Summer Prep Guide for Your C-Store

Summer Ready: How Independent Convenience Stores Can Win the Hottest Season

Summer is the busiest stretch of the year for independent convenience stores. It’s also the most expensive, the most logistically demanding, and the toughest on equipment. The stores that come out ahead in September aren’t the ones that worked harder—they’re the ones that prepared smarter in May.

Here’s how to get your store ready to sizzle—and sell.

Beat the Heat and Control Utility Costs

Summer turns your store into a pressure cooker for equipment. Refrigeration cases, walk-in coolers, and HVAC systems run nonstop.

As temperatures rise, compressors work harder—driving up energy bills and increasing the risk of costly breakdowns.

Pre-season maintenance is essential. A $300 service call in May can prevent a $5,000 inventory loss in July. Schedule coil cleanings, refrigerant checks, and HVAC tune-ups early—before technicians are fully booked.

If upgrades are needed, NRS Funding offers fast access to $2,500–$500,000 in capital—often within days. Use it to handle emergency repairs, replace aging equipment, or invest in energy-efficient systems that reduce long-term costs.

Outsmart the Summer Supply Chain

Running out of key items during peak weekends means lost revenue you won’t recover. Summer demand strains supply chains, making last-minute ordering risky.

Adopt a “just-in-case” strategy for high-demand items:

• Bottled water and sports drinks

• Ice and ice cream novelties

• Propane tank exchanges

• Sunscreen and OTC essentials

• Charcoal and grilling supplies

Leverage NRS POS inventory tools to stay ahead. Set low-stock alerts, review last summer’s sales trends, and reorder before shelves run empty. With NRS Funding, you can also bulk purchase early and lock in better pricing while competitors deal with shortages.

Maximize Cash Flow with Same-Day Funding Summer drives peak sales—but cash flow delays can slow your operations.

Waiting days for credit card deposits limits your ability to restock, pay staff, or act quickly on supplier deals.

NRS Pay’s Rapid Same-Day Funding ensures your sales hit your account the same day—even on weekends. That means immediate access to cash when you need it most.

Better liquidity means better decisions— and stronger growth.

Create a “Cooling Station” Experience

In the heat of summer, your store becomes more than a stop—it becomes a refuge. Customers stepping in from the heat expect cool air, clean spaces, and easy access to cold products.

Simple improvements can make a big impact:

• Pressure-wash forecourts and clean windows

• Service AC units and replace filters

• Refresh signage and ensure all lighting works

• Promote cold drink deals at checkout with customer-facing displays

A clean, cool, and well-organized store encourages longer visits—and higher spending.

Turn Summer Heat into Profit Summer is the most profitable season for independent retailers who are prepared. Success comes from having the flexibility to act—whether it’s stocking up, sponsoring local events, or expanding product offerings.

Use your POS system to create bundle deals like:

• “Beach Day” packs (water, snacks, sunscreen)

• “BBQ Kits” (chips, dip, beverages, grilling essentials)

Bundles increase average transaction value without adding complexity to inventory.

The Bottom Line

Combine smart planning, reliable inventory, strong cash flow, and a great in-store experience—and you’ll turn the hottest months into your most profitable. Stay stocked. Stay cool. Stay funded.

Fake Film Firms Exposed: Pakistani Man Admits Smuggling Plot

CALIFORNIA - According to court documents, Abbas Ali Haider, 49, a resident of Sialkot, Pakistan, orchestrated an elaborate human smuggling scheme by operating two fraudulent Pakistanbased companies—Diamond TV World Productions and Multimedia Advertising Ltd. Between September 2019 and September 2023, Haider used these shell entities to deceive immigration authorities and facilitate the illegal entry of Pakistani nationals into the United States. Under the guise of legitimate business travel, Haider arranged for individuals to obtain visas to countries such as Ecuador, Cuba, and Colombia. These travelers were falsely presented as employees of his companies, allegedly involved in film production and media-related assignments. However, their actual intent was not professional work abroad, but rather to use these countries as transit points en route to the southern U.S. border.

Once admitted into Latin American and Caribbean countries, the individuals were guided by Haider’s network through a coordinated smuggling route leading to the U.S.-Mexico border. From there, they illegally crossed into U.S. states including California, Texas, and Arizona. Authorities state that Haider charged each individual up to $40,000 for facilitating this journey. Haider was arrested in Mexico and

subsequently extradited to the United States in July 2025. He later pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy to bring undocumented individuals into the United States for private financial gain and smuggling illegal aliens for profit. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 30 and faces a minimum prison term of three years and a maximum of 10 years. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory considerations.

The case was announced by Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine for the District of Arizona, and Acting Special Agent in Charge Kevin P. Murphy of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego.

The investigation was led by HSI Calexico, with extensive collaboration from HSI offices in Brasília, Quito, Tijuana, and the Caribbean, as well as the Human Smuggling

Unit in Washington, D.C. Additional support was provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in Miami, and ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Detroit.

This case was prosecuted under Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), a specialized initiative by the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security aimed at dismantling high-level human smuggling and trafficking networks. JTFA focuses on targeting key leaders and facilitators of transnational criminal organizations across the Americas. To date, its efforts have resulted in hundreds of arrests, convictions, and significant prison sentences, reinforcing its role in strengthening border security and public safety.

Trial Attorney Bethany Allen, along with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jared Kreamer Hope and Evan Wesley, is leading the prosecution of this case.

Raja Krishnamoorthi Enters Fight Over Donald Trump Blocking Relief for Democratic States

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) joined Colorado lawmakers on April 28 to introduce legislation that would allow Congress to override presidential denials of federal disaster relief. The proposal creates a fast-track process aimed at ensuring states receive emergency assistance regardless of political affiliation

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) joined Colorado lawmakers on April 28 to introduce legislation that would allow Congress to override presidential denials of federal disaster relief. The proposal creates a fasttrack process aimed at ensuring states receive emergency assistance regardless of political affiliation.

The measure comes after reports showing President Donald Trump denied disaster aid to Democratic-led states at the highest rate in the 47-year history of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). According to the lawmakers, Republican-led states saw an 89% approval rate, while Democratic-led states received approval for only 23% of their requests. “President Trump has repeatedly denied disaster aid requests, including ones affecting families in Illinois, leaving communities struggling to rebuild after severe storms and flooding,” Krishnamoorthi said. “Disaster relief should never depend on politics or arbitrary decisions.”

The bill is co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, along with Representatives Joe Neguse and Brittany Pettersen. Their effort follows the administration’s rejection of federal aid requests for Colorado after the Lee and Elk Fires and severe flash flooding last year.

Under the legislation, the administration would

Texas Targets Trucking Schools Failing English Language Requirements

AUSTIN, TX-Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched a statewide investigation into several trucking schools accused of certifying unqualified commercial drivers, including applicants who allegedly failed to meet English-language requirements mandated under both state and federal law. Officials say the inquiry is aimed at protecting public safety and ensuring that only properly trained drivers are operating large commercial vehicles on Texas highways.

The probe is examining whether the schools provided inadequate instruction, misrepresented their credentials, and helped place unsafe drivers behind the wheel of commercial trucks. Civil Investigative Demands (CIDs) have been issued to several institutions, including EP Texas Trucking School, CDLCALL.COM LLC, Trucker Certified LLC, Fast Track CDL LLC, and Lindenwood Education System, also known as Ancora. These legal demands require businesses to provide documents and information relevant to the investigation.

According to the Attorney General’s office, federal commercial driver regulations require license holders to demonstrate enough English proficiency to communicate with the public, understand road signs and traffic signals,

Probe Targets Trucking Schools Over Unqualified Drivers, Language Violations

respond to law enforcement officers, and complete required reports. Authorities say these standards are critical for safe operation of heavy trucks and other commercial vehicles.

Investigators claim early findings indicate some schools may have ignored those rules. Officials alleged that EP Texas Trucking School told prospective students that English proficiency was not necessary and promoted its services primarily in Spanish.

The state also said several entities falsely claimed to be certified training schools. In addition, some programs reportedly advertised CDL training that could be completed in around 20 days, significantly shorter than the typical industry standard of three to seven weeks.

Paxton said allowing non-English-speaking or unqualified individuals to operate 18-wheelers could create serious safety risks on public roads. He emphasized that his office would continue to pursue the investigation aggressively to ensure Texans remain safe.

The schools named in the investigation operate across multiple Texas cities. EP Texas Trucking School has locations in Odessa and El Paso, while Trucker Certified serves Pampa, Amarillo, Plainview, and Borger. Fast Track CDL is based in Garland, CDLCALL operates in San Antonio, and Ancora’s main office is located in Arlington.

be required to provide Congress with a written explanation within 24 hours of any denial. It would also establish expedited House and Senate procedures, allowing lawmakers to approve aid through a joint resolution. “Disasters don’t care about state lines or politics, and neither should our President’s response,” Bennet said, adding that Congress must be able to act when communities are in crisis. The issue has also drawn concern beyond partisan lines. In Arkansas, Republican officials recently urged reconsideration of denied aid tied to deadly storms, joining leaders in Wisconsin and Illinois calling for a more consistent federal response.

Local Illinois officials say the lack of federal assistance has slowed recovery efforts in Chicago’s South and West Side neighborhoods hit by flooding. Supporters of the bill argue all communities deserve equal access to resources needed to rebuild and prepare for future disasters.

Million Health Care Fraud: Pharmacy Technician Pleads Guilty

DEARBORN HTS, MI -A Michigan man has pleaded guilty to a major health care fraud scheme that defrauded Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers of more than $5.6 million, while also illegally supplying oxycodone prescriptions to drug traffickers for cash.

According to federal court documents, Ali Naserdean, 32, of Dearborn Heights, worked as a pharmacy technician at three metro-Detroit pharmacies. Between 2019 and 2022, Naserdean and a coconspirator submitted false claims for prescription medications that were never prescribed by doctors and never dispensed to patients.

Authorities said the pair used forged prescriptions bearing doctors’ names to conceal the fraud. In many cases, patients had never visited the listed physician, and the medications were never legitimately ordered. The fraudulent activity caused losses exceeding $5.6 million to Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

In addition to the billing fraud, prosecutors said

Naserdean unlawfully distributed prescriptions for oxycodone to drug traffickers in exchange for cash. These prescriptions were allegedly provided without regard to whether they were properly authorized by physicians or dispensed in good faith.

Naserdean pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and possession with intent to illegally distribute oxycodone. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 1 and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. Final sentencing will be determined by a U.S. district judge after reviewing federal sentencing guidelines and statutory factors. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, and the Dearborn Police Department. Federal officials said the prosecution reflects the government’s continued crackdown on health care fraud and abuse. Since 2007, the Justice Department’s Health Care Fraud Strike Force has charged more than 6,200 defendants responsible for over $45 billion in fraudulent billings nationwide.

Nearly 400,000 in Illinois Could Lose Medicaid Benefits

Starting in the coming months, an estimated 400,000 Illinois residents could be at risk of losing their Medicaid coverage — not necessarily because they are no longer eligible, but because federal changes are making the system more confusing and complex.

CHICAGO, IL - Starting in the coming months, an estimated 400,000 Illinois residents could be at risk of losing their Medicaid coverage — not necessarily because they are no longer eligible, but because federal changes are making the system more confusing and complex.

Recognizing the scale of the challenge, Cook County Health convened the Medicaid Impact Workgroup, a coalition of partners from health care, business, academia, and other sectors with one shared mission: helping every eligible resident keep their Medicaid coverage.

One of the group’s first priorities was ensuring the public has access to clear, trusted information. Through this collaboration, officials recently launched GetMedicaidFacts. com, a new website and communications toolkit designed to help individuals and organizations navigate the upcoming changes together.

The site provides current updates, clear guidance for Medicaid recipients, and practical resources in multiple languages. Health care providers, businesses, community organizations, and faith-based groups are encouraged to use the materials to help spread awareness among Medicaid members they serve.

The key messages are simple:

• Renew Medicaid coverage when it is time to renew

• Keep contact information, especially mailing addresses, updated with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services

• Watch for more detailed instructions expected from the agency by September Officials say early preparation and accurate information will be critical to ensuring eligible Illinois families do not lose their health coverage unnecessarily.

FDA Expands Access to Promising Pancreatic Cancer Therapy

WASHINGTON, DC -The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a “safe to proceed” letter to Revolution Medicines, allowing the company to initiate an Expanded Access Protocol (EAP) for its experimental pancreatic cancer drug, daraxonrasib.

The protocol is intended for patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The FDA received the request on April 28 and approved it just two days later, on April 30.

Under FDA regulations, expanded access programs enable investigational drugs to be used for treatment in larger patient populations through a formal protocol or investigational new drug (IND) application. Physicians licensed in the United States must submit requests to the sponsor on behalf of eligible patients.

“Granting the request two days after receiving the

application reflects the FDA’s strong commitment to facilitating early access to therapies for serious and lifethreatening conditions, including pancreatic cancer,” said Marty Makary, Commissioner of the FDA. “Having cared for many patients with metastatic cancer, I am hopeful this action will improve lives.”

Daraxonrasib is a RAS inhibitor designed to block a protein commonly mutated in pancreatic cancer tumors. Revolution Medicines announced on April 13 that it plans to submit a new drug application (NDA) for daraxonrasib under the Commissioner’s National Priority Voucher (CNPV) pilot program. The drug, also known as RMC6236, received a national priority voucher in October 2025. The FDA has also granted daraxonrasib both Breakthrough Therapy and Orphan Drug designations, highlighting its potential significance in treating pancreatic cancer.

Doctors Exempted From U.S. Travel Ban

WASHINGTON, DC - Foreign doctors will once again be able to receive visas to practice in the United States after the Trump administration quietly revised a policy that had previously restricted them under an expanded travel ban.

The policy, introduced in January, had frozen decisions on visa extensions, work permits, and green cards for citizens of 39 countries. As a result, many physicians were placed on administrative leave, while others faced the risk of losing their ability to work in U.S. hospitals.

Last week, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services updated its website without a formal announcement, clarifying that physicians are no longer subject to the processing hold. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that applications related to medical professionals will now continue to be processed, allowing visas and work permits to be issued again.

This change comes at a critical time, as the United States faces a growing shortage of doctors—estimated at around 65,000—expected to worsen over the next decade due to an aging population and physician retirements. Foreign-trained doctors play a vital role in addressing this gap, with more than 60 percent working in primary care fields such as family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. International physicians make up roughly 25 percent of the U.S. medical workforce. Many serve in underserved areas where staffing shortages are most severe. Advocacy groups had raised concerns that the earlier restrictions could disrupt care and worsen healthcare access.

The policy shift follows mounting pressure from medical organizations. In April, more than 20 professional associations urged federal agencies to create exemptions for qualified physicians and expedite their applications. Thousands of doctors— particularly those completing residencies or preparing to begin new positions—had been left in uncertainty.

While the update offers relief, many affected physicians have yet to receive direct communication about their visa status. Still, experts see the move as a positive step toward stabilizing the healthcare system.

The revised policy ensures that skilled international doctors can continue contributing to U.S. healthcare, helping address critical shortages and maintain patient care across the country.

South Asian Real Estate Titans Lead Chicago into the Green Era

CHICAGO, IL -On a vibrant Friday evening in April 2026, the Waterford Banquet & Conference Center came alive as the Association of South Asian Real Estate Professionals (ASARP) hosted a landmark gathering celebrating ten years of leadership, networking, and growth. In partnership with Hawthorne World Group, the event brought together real estate professionals, investors, brokers, and community leaders for an inspiring discussion on sustainability, innovation, and the future of real estate.

The evening began with a lively networking reception, where guests exchanged ideas and explored how sustainability has become a major driver of value, tenant demand, and long-term profitability. Anjali Mohanty served as host, creating a welcoming atmosphere centered on collaboration and opportunity. ASARP Vice Chair Shirin Marvi delivered powerful opening remarks, describing

ASARP as more than an organization—a movement dedicated to empowering South Asian professionals across North America.

Nick Verma presented valuable insights on “Design, Sustainability, and Well-being in Commercial Real Estate.” He emphasized that energy-efficient and ESG-compliant buildings now attract stronger financing, better tenants, lower operating costs, and higher valuations. Health-conscious spaces with cleaner air, natural light, and efficient systems are increasingly in demand. Verma noted that failing to modernize could result in higher future costs and lost investment opportunities.

Anil Punjwani shared practical financing strategies, highlighting competitive lending solutions for investment properties, owner-occupied buildings, equipment purchases, and SBA programs. Pradeep B. Shukla followed with expert guidance on tax planning, including cost segregation, bonus

depreciation, and 1031 exchanges that can significantly increase investor returns while supporting generational wealth creation.

The keynote address came from Dr. Ganesan Visvabharathy, widely known as Dr. Vish. A pioneer in sustainable development, he shared his journey from early Chicago real estate projects to large-scale net-zero developments. He showcased two flagship opportunities: the restoration of the iconic Coco Palms Resort as a carbon-neutral luxury resort, and a 348-unit eco-friendly multifamily community in DuPage County featuring geothermal systems, solar power, and premium wellness amenities.

The evening concluded with thanks from Harsha G, group photos, and an elegant dinner. More than a celebration, the ASARP-Hawthorne World event demonstrated how education, partnership, and innovation are helping shape a greener and more prosperous future in real estate.

USCIS Reaches Cap for Additional H-2B Visas Under FY 2026 Second Allocation

WASHINGTON, DC -U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has received enough petitions to meet the cap for the additional 27,736 H-2B visas made available under the second allocation for returning workers for fiscal year 2026. These visas were designated for workers with employment start dates from April 1 through April 30, 2026, under the FY 2026 H-2B supplemental cap temporary final rule.

April 21, 2026 was the final receipt date for petitions requesting supplemental visas under this second returning worker allocation.

These additional H-2B visas are intended to help American businesses meet seasonal or temporary labor demands, especially in critical sectors of the U.S. economy.

On January 30, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of Labor jointly announced the FY 2026 temporary final rule, increasing the H-2B cap by up to 64,716 supplemental visas. These visas are available only to U.S. employers that certify they are suffering, or will suffer, irreparable harm without the requested H-2B workers, using a required employer attestation form.

Mamdani Chooses Workers Over Glamour During Met Gala Night

NEW YORK, NY – Mayor Zohran Mamdani skipped the glamour of the annual Met Gala to spotlight the workers powering the fashion industry, shifting attention from celebrity culture to labor rights and working-class stories.

In April, Mamdani had announced that he and his wife, Rama Duwaji, would not attend the star-studded fundraiser held at Metropolitan Museum of Art. Instead, on May 4, he used social media to highlight six New Yorkers whose work supports the global fashion economy — including tailors, union organizers, and delivery workers.

“While the world’s eyes are on fashion’s biggest night, we’re turning ours to the garment, retail, and warehouse workers who keep the industry running,” Mamdani wrote on X. “From true love found on the picket line to a free tailoring school out of a Brooklyn basement — meet the New Yorkers who make it all possible.”

Hundreds Attend Giannoulias’ Inaugural Business Services Resource Fair

Free Event Brought Together Aspiring and Established Business Owners with Licensing, Registration, Tax and Funding Support

CHICAGO, IL -Alexi Giannoulias announced the success of the office’s first-ever Business Services Resource Fair, which attracted more than 500 attendees from across Illinois seeking guidance on starting and growing businesses.

Held on April 27 at Malcolm X College, the free event brought together representatives from state, county and city agencies, along with private-sector business development organizations. Entrepreneurs were able to access key resources related to licensing, registration, taxes and funding opportunities in one convenient location.

Giannoulias said many people with strong business ideas never launch their ventures because the process can seem confusing, costly and difficult to navigate. He emphasized that government should focus on removing barriers and making it easier for

residents to pursue economic opportunity. Supporting entrepreneurs, he said, not only helps individuals succeed but also strengthens local communities and boosts the economy.

The four-hour fair remained active throughout the day, with more than 200 participants attending presentations while many others visited exhibitor tables for personalized assistance and direct access to business experts. Organizers said the event drew a diverse crowd that included first-time entrepreneurs and existing small business owners. Exhibitors also noted a particularly strong turnout of people interested in launching new businesses, a group that can often be challenging to reach.

Participants received step-by-step guidance on registering a business in Illinois, applying for state and federal tax identification numbers, securing required

licenses, and exploring funding sources such as loans and grants. Attendees also learned how to pursue contracts with government agencies and connect with organizations that support small business development. Feedback from attendees and exhibitors was overwhelmingly positive. Many praised the fair’s accessibility and the opportunity to receive multiple services in one place. Several participating organizations described it as one of the most effective and best-attended business events they had experienced.

The Secretary of State’s Business Services division oversees domestic and foreign business entities operating in Illinois, including corporations, notfor-profits, limited liability companies, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships.

ICE Hires Firm to Locate Undocumented Children

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has awarded a contract to private security firm MVM Inc. to assist in locating undocumented immigrant children who entered the United States alone and were later released into communities while awaiting immigration proceedings.

WASHIINGTON, DC -U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has awarded a contract to private security firm MVM Inc. to assist in locating undocumented immigrant children who entered the United States alone and were later released into communities while awaiting immigration proceedings. According to contracting records, ICE describes the initiative as conducting “safety and wellness checks” to verify children’s locations, school enrollment, and overall wellbeing, while also identifying possible signs of abuse or trafficking. However, immigration advocates and legal experts have raised concerns about the program’s true purpose. An internal ICE document previously reviewed by media sources indicated that these operations may also be used to identify children for deportation proceedings or pursue criminal cases against their sponsors. Critics have described the effort as a form of “backdoor family separation.” MVM Inc., based in Ashburn, Virginia, is a longtime federal contractor that has provided detention, transport, and security services to immigration agencies and other government departments. The company has also faced past controversy.

In 2024, MVM was sued in federal court by Guatemalan families alleging involvement in the family separation policy during the first Trump administration. The lawsuit accused the company of participating in the removal and transport of children from their parents under harsh conditions. Some claims were dismissed in 2025, but others related to torture and inhumane treatment remain active.

ICE stated that MVM contractors have no immigration enforcement authority and that the program is focused solely on protecting vulnerable children from exploitation. Still, immigrant rights groups remain skeptical, arguing that many children labeled “missing” were never lost, but simply not properly tracked in government databases. They warn that the checks may intimidate families and discourage children from seeking legal protection. The contract reportedly runs for one year, though financial details and the number of welfare checks requested have been withheld. The decision has intensified debate over immigration enforcement, child welfare, and government accountability.

DHS Warns of Penalties for Unpaid Annual Asylum Fees, Introduces New H.R. 1 Rules

WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an interim final rule to implement new immigration fees and requirements established under H.R. 1, the Reconciliation Act of 2025, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The law introduces additional fees aimed at increasing funding for immigration enforcement operations and ensuring that non-citizens contribute toward immigration service costs.

Previously, on July 22, 2025, USCIS published a Federal Register notice creating a filing fee for Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal, along with an Annual Asylum Fee (AAF) that must be paid each calendar year while an asylum application remains pending.

Electric Air Taxis Could Reach JFK International Airport in 10 Minutes

NEW YORK, NY — New Yorkers may soon be able to travel from Manhattan to John F. Kennedy International Airport in less than ten minutes using new electric air taxis, pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Joby Aviation has begun testing its electric air taxis in New York City this week, with flights operating from Downtown Skyport to JFK Airport. The company says its aircraft use Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) technology, producing zero emissions and offering a faster, cleaner transportation option.

On Tuesday, Joby officials demonstrated the aircraft’s urban travel capabilities to reporters. The air taxi features six propellers, takes off vertically like a helicopter, and transitions forward by tilting some propellers during flight.

“These flights advance our work to determine how next-generation aviation technology can serve the people of New York and New Jersey,” said Kevin O’Toole.

The test program marks one of the final steps before FAA certification. If approved, Joby could begin its first passenger test flights as early as this fall. The demonstration flights are part of the federal government’s new eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.
