ALL 4 HYDERABAD RAPE, MURDER CASE ACCUSED KILLED IN ‘ENCOUNTER’ Hyderabad, Dec 6 (IANS) Ten days after the brutal gang rape and murder of a young veterinarian in Hyderabad, police on Friday shot dead all the four accused in an alleged exchange of fire near Shadnagar town of Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district. Police said the accused were killed in retaliatory

firing after they snatched weapons from the police and opened fire on them. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. at Chatanpally near Shadnagar town, about 50 km from Hyderabad. The accused were gunned down at a spot about 400 metres away from a bridge under which the accused had dumped the victim’s body and set it afire on the night of November 27 after the gang rape near Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Cyberabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar said told reporters at the scene that the accused were brought to the spot around 5.45 a.m. by a 10-member police team to recover the mobile phone and other objects which they had hidden after burning the body.

He said the accused attacked police with stones, sticks and other sharp objects. Two of the accused also snatched firearms from policemen and opened fire. “Still the police maintained restraint and ask them to surrender but they continued to fire. The police returned the fire and after a lull, when they checked they found all four dead,” he said. The police chief said the police found weapons in the hands of main accused Mohammed Arif and fourth accused Chennakeshavulu. He said two police officers also received head injuries. However, they did not sustain bullet injuries..... ..continued to page 12

Round 2 of Trump impeachment ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

U

S House of Representatives Judicial Committee Chair Jerry Nadler launched Round 2 of the impeachment process against President Donald Trump on Wednesday, accusing him of seeking foreign interference in US elections and being willing to compromise the nation’s security. Trump had indulged in conduct that amounted to “treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanor” and never before in US history had a President engaged in all three, Nadler said. The Republican leader on the committee, Douglas Collins, said: “This is not an impeachment. This is just a simple railroad job.” He said that the impeachment process was not driven by facts and the Democrats had decided to impeach Trumo on the very day they lost the 2016 election. The Judicial Committee picked up the impeachment process from the Intelligence Committee, which

delivered a 300-page report on Tuesday outlining the charges against Trump, based on several weeks of secret hearings and public testimony by serving and former diplomats and officials. The main charge listed in the report is that Trump “placed his

amala Harris, the senator of Indian heritage, has pulled out of the race for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination as she tumbled in the polls despite a strong start and was running short of campaign finance. “It is with deep regret — but also with deep gratitude — that I am suspending my campaign today,” she tweeted on Tuesday. She said in a message to her supporters that the “truth today” is “my campaign for president simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue.” “I’ve taken stock and looked at this from every angle, and over the last few days have come to one of the hardest decisions of my life,” she added. Harris, who is from California is of partial Indian descent - her mother is the late cancer researcher Shyamal Gopalan and her father, Donald Harris, is African Jamaican. Now there are only six serious candidates left to participate in the upcoming debate — all of them white in a party that trumpets its diversity and its caring for minorities — after Harris, who qualified for it dropped out. Indian heritage to try for a major party’s presidential nomination. Bobby Jindal, the former governor of Louisiana, ran against President Donald Trump in 2015 for the Republican Party nomination for the 2016 election. But unlike Harris who was initially a strong contender getting as much as 15 percent support in polls, he polled only about 1 percent and quit the race in less than six months. Harris started out strong holding the third spot in the polls behind former Vice President Joe Biden and the socialist Bernie Sanders from December last year through April. After a powerful showing in the Democratic Party debate in June she surged to the second spot in July behind Biden with 15 percent support in the RealClear Politics aggregation of polls. By this week she had tumbled to the fifth place.

S President Donald Trump said he would be leaving the United Kingdom earlier than expected and would not be attending the customary press conference to mark the end of the NATO summit. “When today’s meetings are over, I will be heading back to Washington. We won’t be doing a press conference at the close of NATO because we did so many over the past two days. Safe travels to all!” Trump tweeted. The move came after he called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “two-faced” during a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Efe news reported. “Honestly, with Trudeau, he’s a nice guy, I find him to be a nice guy but the truth is I called him out on the fact he’s not paying 2 percent and I guess he’s not very happy about it. “He’s not paying 2 percent and he should be paying 2 percent. he US Department of Defense has rejected a report alleging that Washington was considering adding 14,000 troops to the Middle East to confront Iran. “The reporting is wrong. The US is not considering sending 14,000 additional troops to the Middle East,” Xinhua news agency reported citing Pentagon spokeswoman Alyssa Farah as saying in a

favor of two politically motivated investigations that would help his presidential re-election campaign”. Trump, who is in London for the NATO summit as the hearings got underway, has refused an offer from the committee to send his lawyers to participate in the proceedings. He told reporters: “The word ‘impeachment’ is a dirty word that should only be used in special occasions.” “What they’re doing is a very bad thing for our country,” he added. Three of the law professors testifying before the Judicial Committee were selected by the Democrats and the fourth by the Republicans. Their testimonies delved into the minutiae of the constitutional history of impeachment and the definitions and applications of terms like bribery, obstruction of

justice, and high crimes and misdemeanor, which are the likely charges the committee will frame against Trump. The Republicans proposed several motions that consumed time by requiring voting by the 41member Judicial Committee that includes leftist Democrat Pramila Jayapal before being shot down as the panel raced to finish its work in time for the entire House to vote on the impeachment before its Christmas vacation. The core of the impeachment process is Trump seeking an inquiry by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into the dealings of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, in Ukraine, and into alleged interference by that country in the 2016 elections. Joe Biden also sought the removal of the prosecutor looking into the gas company, Burisma.

Canada, they have money,” Trump said. The spat between Trump and the Canadian PM came after a video of Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Dutch PM Mark Rutte allegedly mocking

Trump during a gala in Buckingham Palace, made the rounds online. Canadian channel CBC News shared an edited version of the footage on Twitter which has already been viewed over four million times. With a drink in his hand, Johnson is heard asking Macron: “Is that why you were late?” To which Trudeau replied, supposedly referring to Trump’s lengthy press conferences: “He was late because he takes 40-minute press conference off the top.” In the video, the Canadian PM tells his colleagues: “You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor.” The NATO summit has been marred by tension among world leaders.

US denies considering adding 14,000 troops to Middle East tweet on Wednesday. The tweet was in response to a Wall Street Journal report earlier on Wednesday that cited multiple American officials as saying that President Donald Trump’s administration “is considering a significant expansion of the U.S. military

footprint in the Middle East to counter Iran”. The report said Trump could make a decision on the new deployment as soon as this month. The Wall Street Journal updated the story after Farah’s response, but kept its reporting.

ormer Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram, released from the Tihar jail, here on Wednesday, after granted bail by the Supreme Court, said there was not a “single charge framed against me” in the last 106 days. After stepping out of the jail, Chidambaram said, “I can’t comment on the case. I am going to obey the Supreme Court order.” “But the fact is in the 106 days of pre-trail incarceration not a single charge was framed against me. I will speak all about that tomorrow (Thursday),” the senior Congress leader said. Chidambaram came out of the Tihar jail around 8 p.m. after the jail authorities received the court orders. He was received by his son and Lok Sabha member Karti Chidambaram outside the jail premises. Besides his son, hundreds of Congress activists welcomed the former Finance Minister and raised slogans in his favor. After the release, Chidambaram along with his son drove straight to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi’s residence, while several Congress workers gathered outside his residence in the Jor Bagh area to welcome him. On October 16, while in judicial custody at Tihar Jail, he was arrested under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Since October 17, Chidambaram was remanded to the ED custody till October 30. Earlier in the day, Chidambaram was granted bail by the Supreme Court. While granting the bail, the apex court said even if the allegation was related grave economic offense, it was not a rule that bail should be denied in every case since there was no such bar created in the relevant enactment passed by the legislature nor did the bail jurisprudence provided so.

Consequently, the reverse repo rate was maintained at 4.90 percent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the bank rate remained at 5.40 percent. The Reserve Bank had reduced key lending rates during the last five policy reviews to reverse the current consumption slowdown that has plagued the country’s economy, thus surprising India Inc and many economists. However, the Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee continued its accommodative stance. “The MPC also decided to con-

tinue with the accommodative stance as long as it is necessary to revive growth, while ensuring that inflation remains within the target,” the Fifth Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement, 2019-20 said. Last month, macro-economic data showed that a substantial rise in food prices had lifted India’s October retail inflation to 4.62 percent from 3.99 percent in September. Furthermore, RBI MPC expects inflation to rise in the near-term, “but it is likely to moderate below target by Q2 of 2020-21”.

SRINAGAR: After four months, the authorities on Wednesday decided to restore internet facility on the fixed landline connections in Kashmir, top sources told IANS. “It has been decided to restore internet services on fixed landline connections provided by BSNL in the Valley. The services would be restored immediately in Srinagar and gradually in the entire Valley,” a senior official said after a high-level meeting in New Delhi. Internet services were suspended on August 4, a day before Article 370 was abrogated, and had remained suspended in the Valley since then. There had been growing demands from students, professionals and businessmen for the restoration of service as they claimed that its suspension had seriously affected their day to day activities. Local traders said they could not file the goods and services tax (GST) and the income tax returns due to non-availability of internet. Hoteliers said they were unable to take bookings from tour and travel operators because of no internet. Authorities said suspension of internet had become unavoidable as anti-national and anti-social elements were using it to upload inflammatory posts, statements and pictures to disturb the law and order in Kashmir. —IANS

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 that seeks to provide Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, said sources. The Bill, which amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants in select categories eligible for citizenship, has been attacked by the Opposition, minority outfits and others for leaving out the Muslims and also on the ground that it is at odds with the Constitution,

The Indian Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) will transfer 3.7 acres at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan on a 99year fixed lease for this purpose. “Hotel facility will add value to the IECC project and promote #India as a global destination for trade and commerce along with employment generation,” a tweet by the official spokesperson said. The ITPO is undertaking a mega project to redevelop Pragati Maidan into a world class interna-

Javadekar said the Cabinet has also cleared the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (Amendment) Bill, 2019 for care of the elderly, who constitute 10 percent of the population. For protection of privacy and personal data, the Cabinet also approved the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019. The Bill will be introduced in the current session of Parliament. The Cabinet also extended the reservations in representations for SC/ST for 10 years from 2020 to 2030. Javadekar said this is an important step for empowerment and social justice.

‘Spotting Vikram on Moon was a challenge when NASA couldn’t’ Citizen space scientist Shanmug Subramanian scanned NASA images to spot debris from Vikram on Moon ARUL LOUIS, NEW DELHI

S

Vikram was launched from Chandrayaan on September 6.

D.C. PATHAK, NEW DELHI

U

ddhav Thackeray’s roller coaster ride to chief ministership of Maharashtra reaffirms the supremacy of the democratic principle in electoral politics that a party or a coalition commanding majority in the legislative house alone should be constitutionally allowed to assume power. But, the Maharashtra episode also brings out the stark reality that if a multi-party system gets excessively fractionalized then even a strict law against defection may not be enough to prevent opportunistic breaks and regroupings purely driven by the ‘numbers game’. Two well defined pre-poll alliances — BJP-Shiv Sena and Congress-NCP — were in the fray in the assembly election in Maharashtra and the first one did secure a comfortable majority but the combine failed to form the government after receiving Governor’s invite, due to Shiv Sena’s hyped demand for rotational Chief Min-

hanmuga Subramanian, the eagleeyed citizen space scientist who found Vikram moonlander said that he took spotting it as a challenge when NASA couldn’t. He said in an email interview to IANS: “It was something challenging as even NASA can’t find out so why can’t we try out? And that’s the thought that led me to search for Vikram lander.” Subramanian, who works as an information technology architect, in his spare time looked through the images taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) camera on September 17 and spotted a debris from Vikram. Those images were taken when the light during moon’s dusk was very harsh at the place where the moonlander crashed and the long shadows made the hunt for Vikram difficult, NASA and LRO said at

that time. LRO Project Scientist Noah Petro, to whom Subramanian emailed his finding, told IANS: “The story of this really amazing individual (who) found it, helped us find it, is really awesome.” The Vikram moonlander was sent by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) aboard the Chandraayan 2 that orbited the moon. Vikram was launched from Chandrayaan on September 6 in hopes of making a safe landing and exploring the moon’s surface. However, it lost contact with ISRO minutes before the scheduled landing and crashed. Petro said: “This is the wonderful thing about our data. We released it for the world and anyone can use and he used it to make this discovery.” Subramanian suggested a crowd-sourced citizen scientist movement to help space organizations. “LRO’s data is a treasure

trove. I would suggest students and others to help out NASA, ISRO and other space organizations by building a good database of LRO images with features like comparison etc.,” Subramanian told IANS. “Currently we have to compare it manually (and I) wish someone can do more on that, with NASA’s scientists time crunched for their Moon missions,” he added. Asked how he got interested, Subramanian said: “Space exploration is nothing new for me as I have been interested in space right from the scratch and watched ISRO’s rocket launches closely even managed to capture some of it on my YouTube channel. “I don’t think Vikram lander would have made a such impact on the minds of the Indian public if it had landed successfully (but) since it was lost there was a lot of discussion in public forums as well as on my Facebook regarding what malfunctioned etc.

THE GAME OF NUMBERS Union Home Minister Amit Shah did admit that BJP was misled by Ajit Pawar

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

istership — beyond the post of deputy chief minister and a generous share of ministries that were already on the plate. Shiv Sena had a strength of only 56 against BJP’s 105. While, Uddhav Thackeray might have

presumed his own leverage and BJP’s political compulsion, the development triggered the effort by the non-BJP alliance to link up with Shiv Sena once Uddhav sent a feeler to the group. Meanwhile, however, the Shiv Sena’s failure to honor the call from Raj Bhawan to indicate willingness to form the government on the strength of a majority, saw the torch being passed on to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as the third largest party for forming the government in the same way. As this also did not come through within time, the state was placed under the President’s rule. NCP had a past relationship with Shiv Sena and this helped the new exercise of hammering out a tripartite combination of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress which

unsurprisingly became an endless affair because of the tussle on the sharing of spoils. In the environ of political oneupmanship, NCP legislature party’s leader Ajit Pawar made a surreptitious offer of support to BJP that the latter grabbed apparently without due diligence on the hold of Ajit on his MLAs, only to run into an avoidable political failure. The process was hastened by the intervention of the Supreme Court on the timing of the confidence vote that led to a premature resignation of both Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis who had earlier been sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister and Chief Minister. Union Home Minister Amit Shah did admit that BJP was misled by Ajit Pawar. Since for Ajit Pawar, Devendra

“The crash landing of Vikram made more people interested in it and it also got eventually hooked me, which lead to me searching NASA’s pic for nearly some 4-5 hours every night.” Subramanian spoke of the social media world of space enthusiasts where intense discussions were taking place about the mystery of Vikram and which helped his quest. “Initially there was lot of false positives I got (that were) corrected by Twitterati and one of the tweets led to me a Reddit forum where they had the exact intended landing location and the path of Vikram,” he said. On being able to narrow down the area for his search, he said: “Though there was no data available about the path of Vikram lander, I eventually concluded it would have come from North Pole as one of the tweets from ‘cgbassa’ said Vikram has crossed the North Pole of the moon.”

Fadnavis was the main point of interface with BJP, it seems the exChief Minister was the first to be taken in by Ajit’s promise of alliance. This flagged off the early morning revocation of President’s rule for a ‘pre-emptive’ political strike against the opposition. The hasty move that brought the Prime Minister into the picture ended in a faux pas on account of Ajit Pawar’s impetuousness. The case of Maharashtra shows that even if the government formation came at the end of chronological steps which were legitimate — legally speaking — a certain weakness of the constitutional process and, of course, a deficit of public morality in the way parties indulged in exercising pulls and pressures over days and weeks for gains of office, have been unraveled. The leadership of the established parties should be straightforward in accepting or declining pacts if they were taking the line that interests of the electorate got priority over ideological divergences.

ranian President Hassan Rouhani has said that his country was still open to negotiations amidst ongoing tensions, a media report said. “We have no choice other than resistance and steadfastness in the face of those who impose sanctions, but have not shut the door to negotiation either,” Press TV said in the report citing Rouhani as saying during an address here on Wednesday. “We believe that wrongful and oppressive sanctions should be lifted first, and then the issue of negotiation can be addressed,” he added. Rouhani said Iran was ready to hold talks within the framework of the P5+1 states - the US, the UK, France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China - as soon as Washington lifts the sanctions it re-imposed on Iran after leaving the nuclear deal last year. “We see no problem in that,” he noted. The US, however, left the deal in May 2018 in a move that flew in the face of the agreement’s multi-party nature, and the fact that the accord

Verdict in Musharraf treason case on December 17 ISLAMABAD: A special court here on Thursday said it would announce the verdict in the high treason case against former Pakistan President Gen PerPervez vez Musharraf on Musharraf December 17 after hearing the arguments of the government’s new prosecution team. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on November 27 stopped the special court from issuing the verdict it had earlier reserved, reports Dawn news. Additionally, the high court had directed the government to notify a prosecution team by December 5. On October 24, the special court was informed that the government had sacked the entire prosecution team engaged by the previous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government to prosecute the case. The high treason trial of the former President for clamping the state of emergency on November 3, 2007, has been pending since December 2013. He was booked in the treason case in December 2013. Musharraf was indicted on March 31, 2014, and the prosecution had tabled the entire evidence before the special court in September the same year. However, due to litigation at appellate forums, the trial lingered on and Musharraf left Pakistan in March 2016. —IANS

has been ratified in the form of a UN Security Council resolution.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs

Abbas Araqchi said that the Islamic Republic has no intention to abandon the deal, saying Tehran will resume fulfilling its commitments under the accord if sanctions were lifted. “Our goal is not to exit the JCPOA (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), but we have decided to reduce our commitments after an entire year of exercising patience and witnessing non-compliance on the part of the European countries,” Araqchi said in a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in Tokyo on Tuesday. The sanctions were re-imposed by the US on Iran after Washington unilaterally abandoned the deal.

Pak asks UK to return Nawaz Sharif after treatment is over IANS, ISLAMABAD

P

akistan has written to the British government seeking the return of ailing former prime minister Nawaz Sharif after his medical treatment in the UK is over. This was disclosed at the ARY News talk show ‘Power Play’ on Tuesday. Sharif is facing scores of charges in several cases in Pakistan, and is also convicted in a case, said the government letter to the authorities in the UK. The letter has annexed details of

the cases against Nawaz Sharif. Sharif had left for London in an air ambulance via Doha, accompanied by his younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif and personal physician and reached London on November 19. Earlier, the Lahore High Court had allowed the former premier to go abroad for four weeks without submitting any indemnity bond as proposed by the federal government. A two-member bench headed by Justice Ali Baqir Najafi ordered the federal government to remove the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz

ATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said he believed that a “political negotiated solution” was needed in Afghanistan, while reaffirming the bloc’s support for Afghan security forces with training, assist and advising. “We are committed to continue to support Afghanistan because we strongly believe that the best way NATO can support peace efforts is to

train, assist and advise the Afghan security forces so that Taliban understand that they will never win on the battlefield,” TOLO News quoted Stoltenberg as saying at a presser in London on Wednesday. NATO “welcomed efforts to restart the Afghan peace talks, he said, adding that the security bloc “supported the talks because we believe that we need a political negotiated solution in Afghanistan”. This comes as the US State Department on Wednesday said that

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson

ISLAMABAD: Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has vowed to crack down on crime after two people were killed in an attack in the UK capital. Usman Khan, 28, was shot dead by police after stabbing several people in London Bridge at around 2:00 p.m. (GMT) on Friday. He was released from prison in December 2018 after serving half of a 16-year sentence for planning to plant a bomb at the London Stock Exchange, Efe news reported. “It does not make sense for us as a society to be putting people convicted of terrorist offenses, of serious violent offenses, out on early release,” Conservative leader Johnson said during a visit to London Bridge on Saturday. Johnson, who is leading the polls for the general elections slated for 12 December, added that the Conservative Party manifesto says his government would issue tougher sentences for serious and violent crimes. “It is a mistake to allow serious and violent criminals to come out of prison early and it is very important that we get out of that habit and that we enforce the appropriate sentences for dangerous criminals, especially for terrorists,” the PM said on Friday ahead of an emergency meeting with the government’s Cobra committee. Johnson commended the rapid response of the police, who shot down the attacker five minutes after receiving the alert that a stabbing spree was taking place. —IANS

Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad “will rejoin the talks with the Taliban in Doha to discuss steps that could lead to intra-Afghan negotiations and a peaceful settlement to the ongoing conflict in the country”. Khalilzad met with the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Wednesday and the two sides exchanged views related to the peace process, including “the prospect for a ceasefire as a result of a peace agreement and the issue of Taliban’s sanctuaries outside Afghanistan”. He also met CEO Abdullah Abdullah and other politicians and they discussed the peace process and reduction of violence by the Taliban, before the start of talks.

oftware major Infosys’ cofounder N.R. Narayana Murthy’s prodigal son Rohan Murty has married Aparna Krishnan, a Palaghat Iyer, at a simple ceremony in this tech hub, attended by their family members and close relatives, a source said on Wednesday. “As the marriage was a personal event, only family members and close relatives of the groom and the bride were present at the private ceremony on Monday. It was performed as per the Hindu customs in a traditional way,” a source told IANS.

The wedding reception on the same evening at a star hotel in the city center was, however, graced by the who’s who of the IT industry, including Infosys’ four co-founders, some of its board directors and celebrities across the fields. Co-founders Nandan Nilekani, Krish Gopalakrishnan, S.D. Shibulal and K. Dinesh attended the reception along with their spouses. Nilekani is currently the nonexecutive Chairman of the $11-billion IT behemoth. “Besides the co-founders, Infosys independent director and Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone and Rohan’s younger sis-

ter Akshata Murty were present at the reception,” recalled the source. Murthy and his wife Sudha were the hosts who greeted the invitees and attendees. “Rohan and Aparna met three years ago through a friend and have been meeting often since then... they decided to marry and become a couple,” the source said. According to the source, Rohan was clad in kurta and black pant, while Aparna wore a while lehenga (long frock) for the grand occasion. Rohan, 36, married Lakshmi Venu in 2011 but divorced her in 2015. Lakshmi is the daughter of TVS Group Chairman Venu Srinivasan.

est Africa is infamous for piracy and now the situation has worsened further with the kidnapping of 19 crewmen, nearly all Indians, onboard a very large crude carrier (VLCC). The attack on the Anglo-Eastern-managed Nave Constellation took place 66 nautical miles south of Nigeria’s Bonny Offshore Terminal. Eighteen out of the 19 crew members were Indian nationals and the remaining one was a Turkish. The vessel was laden and outbound from the Bonny Offshore Terminal, say reports. It was underway at approximately 13.3 knots. It was not under any

kind of escort when the attack on it took place, making it more vulnerable. The 2010-built tanker is owned by Navios Maritime Acquisition, according to VesselsValue. A spokesperson for the owner and the manager of the tanker is quoted to have said: “Navios as Owners and Anglo Eastern as Technical and Crew Managers’s prime concern is the safety and early return of the 19 persons taken by the pirate gang. All the appropriate authorities, including the Flag State, have been alerted and are responding and all the necessary action is being taken to secure their wellbeing and early release.”

US man has surrendered to the police in California’s San Bernardino for the killing of Indian student Abhishek Sudhesh and was immediately arrested, authorities said. By turning waste into something that would be useful for farming, he seeks to “turn the desert into a garden”, adding that his vision for the project was to

“promote chemical-free agriculture”. He has also made a cleaning robot using old cars, cardboard and motor. “I had made a smaller robot to help my mother. Now I have made a bigger one to help with cleaning.” For the past few years, Harshith is also leading a campaign against plastic use. He makes paper bags to replace the plastic ones. He will continue and expand his drive when he visits Srikakulam during vacation. “I have taken my campaign to 20 schools in Srikakulam.”

Speaking to the media, Greenfield International Stadium pitch curator Biju said that two pitches have been readied and has been cleared by the ICC representatives. “This is going to be a pitch where lots of runs can be expected. Even with likely rains, the pitch will favour the batsmen,” said Biju. This is the third international fixture at the state-of-the-art Greenfield Stadium, lying next to the Technopark campus and this has been a lucky venue for India as they have won both the matches they have earlier played at the venue. Steamy scenes of web show make way to porn sites The app owners, on their part, claim helplessness over the situation

IANS, NEW DELHI

A

ctors and makers of a web show titled D-Code are crying foul over what they claim is illegal practice on part of the on-demand video-streaming platform, ULLU app. According to the cast and crew, certain bold sequences filmed for the show have mushroomed on various porn sites. The app owners, on their part, claim helplessness over the situation, saying all such sequences have been filched by cyber pirates without their knowledge, the same way that blockbuster movies are illegally available online. The makers of D-Code, however, feel not enough has been done to protect their show. “I am aware of at least 20 to 25 porn sites – I am sure there are many more – where intimate scenes from my show have been posted. Clips of 18 to 40 minutes have been created combining actual shots from the show, ‘making of’ shots and also footages of scenes of the actors on the set in between shots,” said producer-director Roshaan Garry of D-Code, naming sites such as iporntv.net and score69.com and bestwifeporn.com where content of her show has

wrongfully made way. When IANS contacted Vibhu Agarwal, CEO of ULLU, he cited helplessness over the situation. “Pirates have a specific target – to hack, pick and post content in the wrong places. We have an IT team working overtime to stop such occurrences, but these things are practically unstoppable, just as you cannot stop piracy of a big film which is leaked online no sooner that it releases. Forget us, can Netflix and Amazon Prime with so many filters stop piracy of their content? We cannot catch the per-

petrators because they often function from neighbouring countries, and also because copies of a pirated clip gets circulated so rapidly that, by the time you erase one set of errant sites, several others have mushroomed.” The ones who are most affected in this no-win situation are the actors – particularly female actors of such shows. Actress whose have worked in ULLU shows include Gunjan Vijaya, Kajal Shankawar, and Neelu Kohli. When IANS spoke to Kajal, she

By 2019, when countless special-op agents, cops, soldiers, spies — and various other keepers of the law - have already saved the nation from Jihad and terrorism on the Bollywood screen a zillion times, the challenge for the makers was to get a new reason to rehash the familiar formula. While director Garry has filed complaints with the Andheri police in Mumbai, the cyber cell, and also notified Mumbai Commissioner’s office and the I&B Ministry, Kajal says she has lodged an FIR. Given the inability of cyber cops as well as technicians of individual websites, the actress feels the only way out is to restrict what is shown on digital platforms. “Limit sexual depiction on the net. Since this sort of content is being used wrongly and out of context, why don’t we have a solid check? Let a panel of people who matter sit down together and chalk out a plan to restrict such content if we, as a nation, can’t control its flow. I haven’t signed a new project in 10 months fearing what I do in front of the camera will end up being used in a wrong way at a wrong site. I’ve literally quit my job as an actress for now,” says Kajal. Garry, on her part, feels such uncontrolled flow of content on the web will destroy the medium. “We can’t have this going. It will finish the web space,” she sums up.

How Hollywood adds sheen to Bollywood biggies

‘Commando 3’: Pop goes patriotism again ommando 3” tries doing too many things. It tries serving an extra-large dose of pop patriotism, because that’s the flavour of the season and the hero is a special-op commando. It tries being a larger-than-life Bollywood action film of the eighties, and also a designer, new-gen Hollywood thriller. More than anything else, the film tries to be a faithful sequel, because that’s where the money lies. The outcome is a storyline that takes too many liberties to accommodate all of the above, and is as incoherent as it is illogical. In this new sequel, Vidyut Jammwal returns as the eponymous Commando, Karanveer Singh Dogra, who is out to thwart yet another menace that threatens to destroy India. This

still seemed in a state of shock. “This is on-screen molestation,” Kajal describes the situation, adding: “I come from smalltown Etawah, and it didn’t take me long to realise it would be near impossible for me to get films – ‘sab stars ke bachchon ke liye hain’. There’s just the web for outsiders like me to showcase talent. You do your job thinking you’ve done a great job, and then one day someone calls you to say they have spotted an intimate scene of yours on a porn site.” Putting an intimate scene as a standalone clip in a porn site throws it out of context, making it seem vulgar, she adds. “My folks back home wouldn’t be able to understand such things. All they see is I am in a film on a wrong kind of a site. In some clips they have erased my voice and put in sounds of moaning with the action. This makes it seem even more cheap.” Many of the actresses who have been victims of the situation are in a state of depression, avers D-Code director Roshan Garry. The clips invariably go viral, without any mechanism to control web content. “I am told there are over five million views on just one site alone. Some insignificant Instagram

ancreatic cancer is resistant to all current treatments. Patients have extremely poor chances of surviving for five years after being diagnosed but a new study found that a small molecule has the ability to induce the self-destruction of pancreatic cancer cells. The study, published in the journal Oncotarget, was conducted with xenografts -transplantations of human pancreatic cancer into immunocompromised mice. The treatment reduced the number of cancer cells by 90 per cent in the developed tumors a month after being administered. “In research published in 2017, we discovered a mechanism that causes the self-destruction of human cancer cells during their duplication (mitosis)

without affecting normal cells,” said study researcher Malca Cohen-Armon from Tel Aviv University in Israel. “We have now harnessed this information to efficiently eradicate human pancreatic cancer cells in xenografts. The current results were obtained using a small molecule that evokes this selfdestruction mechanism in a variety of human cancer cells,” Cohen-Armon added. According to the researchers, the mice were treated with a molecule called PJ34, which is permeable in the cell membrane but affects human cancer cells exclusively. This molecule causes an anomaly during the duplication of human cancer cells, provoking their rapid cell death. Thus, cell multiplication itself resulted in cell death in the treated cancer cells.

the blood, causing inflammation in the body. Inflammation increases the risks of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and heart failure (the heart’s ability to pump blood or relax and fill with blood is impaired). This study examined the connection between oral hygiene and occurrence of these two conditions. Participants underwent a routine medical examination between 2003

and 2004. Information was collected on height, weight, laboratory tests, illnesses, lifestyle, oral health, and oral hygiene behaviors. During a median follow-up of 10.5 years, 4,911 (3.0 per cent) participants developed atrial fibrillation and 7,971 (4.9 per cent) developed heart failure. The findings were independent of a number of factors including age, sex, socioeconomic status, regular exercise, alcohol consumption, body mass index, and comorbidities such as hypertension. According to the researchers, one possibility is that frequent tooth brushing reduces bacteria living in the pocket between the teeth and gums, thereby preventing translocation to the bloodstream. It is certainly too early to recommend toothbrushing for the prevention of atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure, the study said. “While the role of inflammation in the occurrence of cardiovascular disease is becoming more and more evident, intervention studies are needed to define strategies of public health importance,” it added.

Social media use linked to eating disorder in children IANS, SYDNEY

arents, take a note. Researchers have found that excessive use of social media, particularly platforms with a strong focus on image posting and viewing such as Snapchat and Instagram, is associated with eating disorder in young adolescents. For the study, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, researchers examined data on 996 grade 7 and 8 adolescents. “While a range of studies have focused on the impact of social media on body image, this is the first to examine the relationship between specific social media platforms and disordered eating behaviors and thoughts,” said study lead author Simon Wilksch from Flinders University in Australia. “Also, most other studies had

focused on older adolescents or young-adult women,” he said. “The study on associations between disordered eating and social media use among young adolescent girls and boys suggested that much more needed to be done to increase resilience in young people to become less adversely impacted by social media pressures,” Wilksch added.

For the study, researchers examined data on 996 grade 7 and 8 adolescents.

Aspirin can be safe option to treat migraines Migraines can last anywhere from four to 72 hours.

1,300 milligrams given at the onset of symptoms, is an effective and safe treatment option for acute migraine headaches. In addition, some but not all ran-

domized trials suggest the possibility that daily aspirin in doses from 81 to 325 milligrams may be an effective and safe treatment option for the prevention of recurrent migraine headaches. “Our review supports the use of high dose aspirin to treat acute migraine as well as low dose daily aspirin to prevent recurrent attacks,” said study researcher Charles H. Hennekens from Florida Atlantic University in the US.

“Moreover, the relatively favorables side effect profile of aspirin and extremely low costs compared with other prescription drug therapies may provide additional clinical options for primary health care providers treating acute as well as recurrent migraine headaches,” Hennekens added. Common symptoms of migraine include a headache that often begins as a dull pain and then grows into a throbbing pain, which can be inca-

pacitating and often occurs with nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to sound, light and smell. Migraines can last anywhere from four to 72 hours and may occur as many times as several times a week to only once a year. “Migraine headaches are among the most common and potentially debilitating disorders encountered by primary health care providers,” said study first author Bianca Biglione.

42nd Annual Classical Performance by Dances of India in St. Louis

BY A STAFF WRITER ST. LOIUS, MO- Dances of India, one of the oldest classical Indian dance companies in the US, presented its 42nd annual performance in St. Louis on Nov. 15-17. Along with a lively selection of classical Indian dances—and an extraordinarily dynamic interpretation of a thillana performed by the local contemporary/ hip-hop company The Ashleyliane Dance CO— the nonprofit arts organization, led by Artistic Director Asha Prem, offered an intriguing, indeed fascinating look at one of the most beloved and fundamental myths in Hinduism: the absolute love between Krishna and the gopika (milkmaid), Radha, in its original production The Secret Letters of Radha & Krishna. The production is based on an inventive premise: what if Krishna wrote Radha letters, after he leaves his childhood village to go face his destiny? Through the series of imagined letters the company explores themes of love, loss, & longing as Radha gradually realizes her love is not returning to her. In a comical scene, Radha and her best friend send their shadows to go find out whom Krishna has married. Their shadows arrive at the moment the great Sage Narada is asking Krishna’s second wife Satyabhama to offer him something worth Krishna’s weight and value—which culminate in the well-known tulabhara (‘weighing on the scales’) scene. Through observing this episode Radha realizes she was never meant to be Krishna’s wife; indeed, she has always been above the material bonds which define so many marriages. Radha’s

story ends with a last letter from Krishna in which he alludes to the primary messages of the Bhagavad-Gita: detachment, and devotion. The production—written & narrated by Nartana Premachandra, Asha Prem’s daughter, and choreographed by Theckla Mehta, visual artist and co-director-- was enchanting, artistically daring, and deeply spiritual at the same time. Indeed, such creative spins on classic

myths is a hallmark of this venerable dance company. In addition Patrick Suzeau, the graceful, technically precise Professor of Dance at Kansas University in Lawrence performed a whimsical, fluid portrait of a gandharva in a fusion of contemporary with Odissi. It was a beautiful addition to an entertaining and edifying evening.

wenty one years after founding Google in a Menlo Park garage, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the CEO and President, respectively of parent company Alphabet, have decided to leave these roles, paving the way for India-born Sundar Pichai to become the CEO of both Google and Alphabet. Page and Brin will continue their involvement as co-founders, shareholders and members of Alphabet’s Board of Directors, the company said on December 3. Pichai, who will remain a member of Alphabet’s Board of Directors, will assume the role of managing Alphabet’s investment in its portfolio of “Other Bets”, or longshot projects. “It’s impossible to overstate Larry and Sergey’s contributions over the past 21 years. I’m grateful that they will continue their involvement on the Board,” John Hennessy, Chairman of Alphabet Board of Directors, said in a statement. Page and Brin founded Google in September 1998. Since then, the company has grown to more than 100,000 employees worldwide, with a wide range of popular products and platforms like Search, Maps, Ads, Gmail, Android, Chrome, Google Cloud and YouTube. In October 2015, Alphabet became the parent holding company of Google. “We are deeply humbled to have seen a small research project develop into a source of knowledge and

Huawei gets back at FCC with legal challenge SHENZHEN: Hitting back at the regulators and critics, Chinese telecom and smartphone giant Huawei on Thursday sued the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), seeking the court to overturn an order passed on November 22 which bans carriers in rural America from tapping the Universal Service Fund (USF) to purchase Huawei equipment. In a petition filed in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, Huawei asked the court to hold the FCC’s order unlawful on the grounds that it fails to offer Huawei required due process protections in labelling it as a national security threat. “Banning a company like Huawei, just because we started in China — this does not solve cyber security challenges,” Song Liuping, Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer, said at a press conference here. According to Song, both FCC chairman Ajit Pai and other FCC commissioners failed to present any

evidence to prove their claim that Huawei constitutes a security threat, and ignored the facts and objections raised by the company and rural carriers after the FCC first made the proposal in March, 2018. The firm believes that the FCC also fails to substantiate its arbitrary findings with evidence or sound reasoning or analysis, in violation of the the US Constitution, Administrative Procedure Act, and other laws. Big wireless providers such as AT&T and Verizon are not using Huawei’s gear but, carriers in remote parts of the US have depended on it for years. “Huawei also submitted 21 rounds of detailed comments, explaining how the order will harm people and businesses in remote areas. The FCC ignored them all. U

S Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Wednesday urged countries to “suspend” their individual digital services taxes and to wait for an international taxation agreement on the matter to be negotiated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). “We urge all countries to suspend digital services tax initiatives in order to allow the OECD to successfully reach a multilateral agreement,” said Mnuchin in a letter to OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria. He said that the US opposes taxes on digital services, popularly known as the “Google tax,” since they have a “discriminatory” impact on big tech firms based in the US, Efe news reported. “We believe that it is very important that these talks reach agreement in order to prevent the proliferation of unilateral measures, like digital services taxes, which threaten the longstanding multilateral consensus on international taxation,” Mnuchin added in his letter to Gurria. Gurria on Wednesday proposed in a letter to Mnuchin that he come to Paris, preferably before Christmas, to discuss the matter

Writing about the new Alphabet CEO, they said that “Sundar brings humility and a deep passion for technology to our users, partners and our employees every day.” “...we plan to continue talking with Sundar regularly, especially on topics we’re passionate about,” they said. Pichai joined Google in 2004 and helped lead the development of Google Toolbar and then Google Chrome, which grew to become the world’s most popular Internet browser. In 2014 he was appointed to lead product and engineering for all of Google’s products and platforms — including popular products such as Search, Maps, Play, Android, Chrome, Gmail and Google Apps (now G Suite). Pichai became Google’s CEO in August 2015. He joined the Board of Directors of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, in July 2017. Under his leadership as CEO, Google has been focused on developing products and services, powered by the latest advances in AI, that offer help in moments big and small.

Tough times for Pichai as regulators, staff seek answers NEW DELHI: In an impetus to the Indian-origin talent in Silicon Valley dominated by the likes of Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Mastercard’s CEO Ajay Banga, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who has now taken over as parent company Alphabet’s CEO is excited about Alphabet’s longterm focus on tackling big challenges through technology. However, the mild-mannered Pichai faces extreme challenges ahead as Google stares at several high-profile external probes into its alleged anti-trust market and data practices — from the US to the European Union regulators — including internal tensions with staff over discrimination at work and HR transparency. EU antitrust regulators have launched anti-trust probe into Google’s data collection practices in Europe. EU’s antitrust regulators have already fined Google 1.49 billion euros ($1.7 billion) for abusing its dominance in the online search market by blocking rivals. —IANS

US urges countries to suspend digital taxes

with him and with French Finance MinisterBruno Le Maire. Mnuchin’s letter comes two days after President Donald Trump announced that he will impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on certain French imports — amounting to some $2.4 billion — after France

implemented a 3 percent tax on big tech firms’ income from online services. The tax affects firms such as Google, Apple, Amazon, Facebook and several dozen others that have annual revenues greater than 750 million euros ($845 million). Most of the firms affected by the tax are US-based, but Chinese, British and German companies will also be impacted by the tax. After the implementation of the French tax, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer - who heads the agency responsible for US foreign trade policy - issued a report lambasting the French tax as discriminatory and specifically targeting big US tech firms. He also said that the Trump administration would impose tariffs on a wide array of French products, including champagne, cosmetics, yogurt and various kinds of cheese. The decision “sends a clear signal that the United States will take action against digital tax regimes that discriminate or otherwise impose undue burdens on US companies,” Lighthizer said in a statement on the matter.
