hilip Roth, a Pulitzer Prizewinning novelist and uncompromising realist who wrote about male sexuality, Jewish life and America in books like Godbye Columbus, has died at a hospital here. He was 85. Roth died this week of congestive heart failure surrounded by close friends and family, CNN quoted Judith Thurman, a close friend, as saying. Roth was one of America’s most
prolific 20th century novelists, with a career that included more than two dozen books and short stories. He was born in Newark on March 19, 1933, the younger of two sons. His father, Herman, was an insurance manager for Metropolitan Life and his mother, Bess Finkel, was a secretary before she married, reports The New York Times. Roth graduated from Bucknell in 1954 and won a scholarship to the University of Chicago, where he was awarded an M.A. in 1955. That same year, he enlisted in the

Army but suffered a back injury. In 1956, Roth returned to Chicago to study for a Ph.D. in English but dropped out soon after. In addition to a Pulitzer, he won other top literary honors, including National Book Awards and

The price of petrol per liter in Delhi on Monday under the dynamic pricing regime touched a record high of Rs 76.57, having — already on Sunday — beaten the previous high of Rs 76.06 in the city on September 14, 2013. Diesel in the national capital on Monday went to its highest level of Rs 67.82 per liter. “Various alternatives are being looked at,” Pradhan told reporters, adding that he would “work out something soon”, but did not provide further details.

As per the proposed passenger entitlement, the charter proposes a ‘lock-in period’ for 24 hours after booking in which a passenger can “cancel or amend the ticket without any additional charges.” Additionally, the draft document prohibits airlines as well as online or offline agents to levy cancellation charges that total to more than the “basic fare plus fuel surcharge”.

T
he hopes of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) adding Karnataka to the list of 19 states where it is in power has been dashed although it came close to fulfilling it. However, the eight seats which the BJP needed to cross the finishing line in the legislature eluded the party. In hindsight, it might have been better for the BJP if it had conceded defeat when it saw that it had fallen short of the target of 112 in the 224member House. Instead, by opting for a floor test, it provoked all the avoidable controversies about horsetrading which have haunted the Indian political scene ever since the Aya Ram-Gaya Ram days of defections in the late 1960s. The Governor, did his office no service by swearing-in B.S. Yeddyurappa as the Chief Minister when the Janata Dal (Secular)-Congress combine was pressing its claim, and allowing him a fortnight’s time to prove his majority. It was inevitable that the inordinately long period would be seen as some kind of a helping hand to the Chief Minister by not only the BJP’s opponents, but also a fair number of observers. The belief that 15 days was too long a period was confirmed by the Supreme Court’s drastic reduction
of the time needed by Yeddyurappa to two days. At a time when the legislators have to be carted around from one town to another and holed up in luxury resorts to stop any of them from being lured away by the powers-that-be, it is necessary to give an aspiring Chief Minister as little leeway as possible. In the end, the Supreme Court’s directive apparently proved crucial, for the BJP chose not to wait have its legislative strength tested on the floor of the House.

stuck to his original plan to address 15 public meetings, the BJP might have fared worse. Since Modi remains not only the party’s star campaigner, but also the only one who can make the difference between victory and defeat, any hint that he can no longer easily enable the party to cross the winning line cannot but be of concern when the BJP faces three more crucial assembly elections in a few months’ time in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. BJP’s tally of 104 fell short of the 110 it won in 2008 with a vote share of 33.8 percent. Moreover, its percentage this time of 36.2 is well below the 43.4 percent it received in 2014 when Modi was at the height of his popularity. There is little doubt that the Modi magic is not as effective as it once was. Now, as virtually the Janata DalSecular’s “B” team in the government of H.D. Kumaraswamy, the Congress will have to shed some of its pretences as the Grand Old Party of Indian politics. Having already been reduced to such a secondary position in UP, Bihar, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, the Congress would not like Karnataka to be added to the list, especially when it polled 640,000 more votes than the BJP with a vote share of 38 percent, up from 36.6 in 2013.

their constant presence in the region has led to emergence of many cafes serving Israeli food which are run by Indians. Take Jagdish Parmar. Hailing from Rajasthan, he was in class nine (aged 14) when he first visited the village. He was so fascinated by its beauty that he kept returning. Over the years, he developed such an attachment to Pulga that he dropped anchor in the village. Popularly known as ‘Jacky’,

ormer Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said that the references against him by the country’s anticorruption body, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), are “byproducts” of him filing a high treason case against former President Pervez Musharraf. The NAB had registered three cases of corruption and money laundering against Sharif and his family members in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Panama Papers case in 2017. Kumaraswamy and assured him of having good relationship with him on the state’s development issues, an official statement said. “Modi called up Kumaraswamy and greeted him on becoming the chief minister and hoped to have good ties between the two,” said the Chief Minister’s office in a statement here. Reciprocating Modi’s gesture,
two parties cheered the leaders, Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, who represents the Congress in the coalition. Both took the oath in Kannada in the name of God.
Kumaraswamy expressed willingness to maintain good relationship with the Prime Minister on development issues pertaining to the southern state. Earlier, Modi congratulated Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister G. In a House of 222, the Congress with 78 members stitched a postpoll coalition with JD-S (37) to keep the BJP out. The coalition also has the support of a BSP MLA, an independent MLA and a legislator from a local party. Kumaraswamy first became Chief Minister with BJP’s support in 2006. He has now become the 25th Chief Minister of the state. None from the Bharatiya Janata Party attended the swearing-in ceremony. Former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said they were boycotting the event as BJP was observing a “black day” across the state. Last week, immediately after the election results were out, Yeddyurappa was sworn in as Chief Min-
ister, but he quit in three days after failing to muster majority support in the Assembly. The JD-S-Congress coalition is expected to convene a short session of the Assembly to prove Kumaraswamy’s majority in the House. Shortly before the schedule for the swearing in, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda was the first to reach the site after which leaders and Chief Ministers from various parties trooped in. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi came together and both were seen talking animatedly with Mayawati. Then it was the turn of Mamata Banerjee to approach Mayawati. Finally, the leaders posed for a photograph holding each other’s hands.

‘Taking steps to close Sterlite unit’ CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said this week that his government was taking all steps to close the Sterlite factory at Thoothukudi after 13 people were killed in protests against it. Palaniswami told the media that the AIADMK government was taking the legal route to ensure that the Sterlite Copper Smelter plant was shut down. He said people in the region had been protesting peacefully for long against the company, alleging that it was causing health hazards and depleting the water table, but this time the opposition and “anti-social elements” had turned the movement violent. “It is because of this instigation that so many people have died. And we are really saddened by the deaths,” he said. He added that in April Sterlite approached the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to continue running the factory but the permission was denied. — IANS

Palaniswamy on Thursday accused some political parties and antisocial elements of “deliberately instigating and misleading” innocent people leading to violence and loss of lives. He told reporters that his government would continue to take steps under the provisions of law for closure of the Sterlite copper smelter plant against which the
local people have been protesting and said electricity to the plant has been disconnected on Thursday. “Some political parties and antisocial elements have wantonly instigated the innocent people who have been protesting peacefully all along and took them on the wrong path leading to unfortunate incidents,” Palaniswamy said without naming any political party. Virtually justifying the police action, he said it was natural that somebody would act in selfdefense when attacked and the action was not pre-meditated. The

Ashwin Patel is named best ‘Business Owner’
BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- Asian American Chamber of Commerce (AACC) of St Louis recognized Seema Enterprises owner Ashwin Patel as the AACC 2018 Business Owner of the Year at the AACC Connections Dinner on May 8. “The Business Owner of the Year award is reserved for people like Patel who use their successful business to bring the community together” says AACC president Al Li. Ashwin and his wife Raksha moved from India to St. Louis in 1978 and quickly spread their entrepreneurial wings by acquiring and promoting Seema Enterprises and Seema World Travel. Under their leadership, Seema has expanded to serve multiple locations over the years. The award was presented to Patel by Pradeep Rajendran, one of the founding board members of AACC. “It is an honor to present this award to Ashwin” said Pradeep. “Ashwin has been a linchpin of the South Asian community in St. Louis for decades”. He was involved in founding the Hindu Temple of St. Louis and Mahatma Gandhi Cultural Center which serves as the epicenter for the Indian American community. He has served in leading roles for several associations and councils, including the India Association of St. Louis, Mahatma Gandhi Center, and
Midwest FOGANA, and the Gujarati Samaj of St. Louis. Patel has also served as an excellent cultural ambassador and has been instrumental in bringing South Asian movies, plays and concerts to St. Louis. He also supports many cultural organizations like the Bal Vihar Center and Surya Performing Arts both financially and through his leadership. Patel was recognized at the AACC Connections Dinner where the business
community commemorates Asian Heritage Month by enjoying a multi-course Pan-Asian meal and celebrating those who have had significant economic and community impact in our region. The event was attended by more than 500 professionals from many industries, for-profit and non-profit organizations in May. Founded in 2011, the mission of the AACC of St. Louis is to build a community of Asian professionals, Asian business owners, and those engaging in business throughout Asia.

The event was open to all and was held at the Badri center in Willowbrook, IL. In the weeks prior, the fathers began planning with full dedication and enthusiasm. Volunteers and donations were sought, logistics planned, and most importantly, menus created. Volunteers pitched up tents and set up temporary kitchens. On May 13, the good cheer of everyone wishing “Happy Mother’s Day!” put a bright smile on all the mothers coming to Badri that morning. As the food preparations began in full swing outside, mothers and children assembled inside the shrine to offer their prayers. Jitendra Nayar Swapna Nayar conducted
the puja, while Swami Sharanananda reminded the audience, especially children, about the selfless and universal love of a mother. After the puja, children from all three centers entertained the audience with bhajans and dance, and performed a skit on Mother India and her sons, Bhagavan Adi Shankara and Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda. After the feast to the eyes and ears, it was time to taste the delicious food the fathers had prepared for all. The fully vegetarian fare ranged from Indian to international, from savory to sweet, and was a nonstop mouth-watering delight to the taste buds. After rounding off the meals with paan and tea, the crowds danced to the favorite tunes which were accompanied by the excellent dhol. Children set up bake sale and henna stalls, while adults organized book and flower sales, and donated the proceeds to the Mission. About 1,500 people attended the free event
on this pleasant spring day and helped make it a grand success. Chinmaya Mission Chicago was established in 1979 as a major center for religious education, culture, and tradition in Chicagoland. Currently, with its 3 centers, it serves about 500 families in the Chicagoland area, with nearly 1,000 children attending Bala Vihar. The Mission also offers classes for young adults and scriptural study groups for adults. Bala Vihar weekly classes start for children from age 4, and values are imparted through stories from puranas, quizzes, games and crafts. Families also engage in many activities from bhajans and chanting to yoga to festival celebrations. Retreats are conducted through the year and summer camps in June and July. As Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda said: “Children are not vessels to be filled, but lamps to be lit.”

The election process was conducted by Shahid Razvi, general secretary of the IAA who had worked diligently to ensure that the entire election process was conducted in a fair manner. Nawab Mir Hamid Ali Khan was unanimously elected as president, the first from Nawabi family (Hyderabadi Nawabi Gharana). He is planning to take the IAA to a higher level like the improved relations between the US and India in 2018. Khan is a very successful community leader and his father Nawab Mir Ahmed Ali Khan was the Home Minister of Government of Andhra Pradesh. Doc spikes girlfriend’s drink for abortion

BY A STAFF WRITER RLINGTON, VA -- A physician who spiked his girlfriend’s drink with medication to induce an abortion has been sentenced to three years in prison. Sikander Imran was arrested last year and pleaded guilty earlier this year to fetal homicide in Arlington County, Virginia. Imran received a 20-year sentence on May 18 with all but three years suspended. He has lost his medical license and faces deportation to Pakistan after he serves his term. The victim, Brooke Fiske, had been dating Imran and was 17 weeks pregnant when she went to visit him to discuss raising the child. Imran admitted slipping an abortion pill into her tea. She had a miscarriage within hours. Fiske asked the judge to grant some leniency to Imran at the May 18 sentencing hearing.

Diane Gujarati named for Federal Judgeship BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- President Donald Trump on May 10 officially nominated Indian American prosecutor Diane Gujarati to the federal judgeship seat in the Eastern District of New York. Gujarati had been considered to be among several potential candidates for nine New York judgeship openings by Trump last year. What’s more, Gujarati was nominated to the bench while President Barack Obama was still in office, but her confirmation remained pending when Trump was elected Gujarati, the deputy chief of the criminal division of the federal prosecutor’s office for the Southern District of New York, will now head to the Senate for confirmation. The seat for which Gujarati has been nominated covers parts of the city as well the suburbs on Long Island. Her father, Damodar Gujarati, is an emeritus professor of economics at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, which trains army officers. The nomination by Trump shows both her legal standing as well as the administration’s difficulty in finding candidates within its ideological spectrum who will be able to win Senate support. Gujarati is expected to receive the confirmation convincingly because of the support of presidents from both parties. Paresh Patel BY A STAFF WRITER ARTINEZ, CA -- An Indian American man, Paresh Patel, 48, has been arrested in Martinez, California on charges of robbery. The police said Patel allegedly broke into a home through a window and stole a purse along with about $600, the victim’s identification and her credit cards. The victim called 911 after she told the police that she had been confronted by a man who had allegedly entered her home through a window. When officers responded, they learned the man had fled on foot with the resident’s purse and some cash. After searching the neighborhood, officers stopped a man at Estudillo Street and Shell Avenue, about 500 yards away. A search of the man, identified as Paresh Patel, of Stockton, yielded the resident’s identification and credit cards, and about $600 in cash. At first, Patel allegedly ran away but was later caught and taken to Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez, California. Patel is currently in custody at West County jail in Richmond, California on a $50,000 bail.

Model dies of overdose of drugs at Indian doc’s home BY A STAFF WRITER T. LAIDERDALE, FL -- An 18-yearold Russian model, who was found dead last March at the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida home of an Indian American physician, apparently died of an overdose of drugs, according to her autopsy report released earlier this month. On the night of her death, Dr Naval Parikh, 41, met with Olya Langille at Blondies bar in Fort Lauderdale Beach. Langille had recently moved to the area to work as a stewardess on yachts. Parikh, who works at Broward Health, told the police that he and Langille had several drinks before returning to his apartment where they “snorted cocaine, smoked marijuana and had consensual sex” before falling asleep. Parikh told the police he then moved to the living room to sleep on a sofa, leaving Langille in bed. He awoke at 9 am and found her unresponsive. Langille’s autopsy report noted that there were traces of fentanyl–a prescription opioid– Xanax, also available only by prescription, cocaine, and MDMA–also known as ecstasy–in

the young woman’s system. Parikh called 911 and a responding officer reported finding “several small Ziplock bags containing suspect cocaine and/or heroin, and a suspected drug pipe” in the drawer of a bedside table in the bedroom where Langille was found dead.
Her death remains under investigation, but no foul play is suspected, according to the Ft. Lauderdale police. Parikh continues to work at Broward Health, and is not under investigation. Langille was from Arkhangelsk, Russia. She had previously worked for the Newport Yacht Club in Rhode Island.

Mystery over death of Indian techie BY A STAFF WRITER INCINNATI, OH -- An Indian American engineer was found dead recently in his home near Cincinnati, Ohio. Praveen Sinha, who had immigrated to the US just three months earlier with his wife Shweta, was found on the kitchen floor of his home. Investigators said the 33-year-old man died the previous evening, but have released no other clues about his manner of death. The police have ruled out foul play. An autopsy report is expected to be completed in June. Shweta, who had just had their first child, was in Atlanta, Georgia at the time of her husband’s death, visiting her in-laws. Sinha’s brother, Naveen, who lives in Atlanta, told reporters that the police were called to his home on April 4 after a colleague with whom Praveen rode to work every day couldn’t get hold of him. They had had a meeting at 8:30 am, earlier than their typical start, so when Praveen didn’t show up, his coworkers assumed he overslept.

BY A STAFF WRITER ENNEWICK, WA -- An Indian American high school sophomore in Washington has recently won two top prizes for developing a low-cost portable air quality sensor. Nikhil Devanathan, a student at Kennewick High School, was honored with two Grand Champion prizes at the Mid-Columbia Science and Engineering Fair for his creation, according to a Kennewick School District news release. The sensor measures dust, ozone, carbon monoxide and volatile chemicals along with temperature and humidity. The device is small, powered by a double-A battery and connects with a smartphone through a mobile app he created. Devanathan envisions his sensor being used by small communities with limited resources. Devanathan has qualified for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pa., to be held May 18 and May 19. Both of Devanathan’s parents are scientists and science and engineering have long interested him. He credits David Atkinson of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and two professors at the University of Washington and University of Texas for their guidance.
