“If the vice president and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president,” he added.

A source said there have been some preliminary discussions among some Cabinet members and Trump allies about invoking the 25th Amendment. Democratic lawmakers also circulated articles of impeachment, Representative David Cicilline said. “I am circulating Articles of Impeachment that @RepTedLieu, @RepRaskin and I have prepared to remove the President from office following yesterday’s attack on the U.S. Capitol,” Cicilline said on Twitter.

HiIndia Newsdesk Amid concerns over the new mutant strain of SARS-Cov-2 virus in India, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday urged the Centre to consider extending the ban on UK flights. The Centre partially lifted the ban and resumed India to UK flights from January 6. The first flight from the UK

will arrive in India on January 8. The civil aviation ministry has revised the number of flights allowed to operate between India and the UK and brought down the number to 30, from 70 till January 23. A detailed guideline has also been issued by the Union health ministry for passengers arriving in India from the UK. However, the Delhi CM took to Twitter and urged the Centre to not lift the ban until January 31.

After a new, possibly more contagious strain of Coronavirus was detected in the United Kingdom in December, several countries imposed a ban on flights from the UK. India, too, on December 21 announced an embargo on UK flights which was effective from December 23 to December 31. Later, it was extended to January 7.

38 UK variant Covid-19 cases now; strain isolated

HiIndia Newsdesk The number of samples detected with the the new, more contagious strain of the novel coronavirus — the UK “variant under investigation” VUI-202012/01 — is now 38, the government said on Monday.

“All these persons (detected with the UK strain of the virus) have been kept in single room isolation in designated Health Care facilities by respective State Governments.

Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine. Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, family contacts and others. Genome sequencing on other specimens is going on,” the Union Health Ministry said in a statement issued on Monday.

This variant of SARS-CoV-2, first detected in Kent, England, has now reached over 30 countries around the world. The Ministry said that six labs have so far detected the UK strain during genome sequencing.

“All these persons (detected with the UK strain of the virus) have been kept in single room isolation in designated Health Care facilities by respective State Governments. Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine,” the Union Health Ministry said in a statement.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday ordered England into a new national lockdown to try to slow a surge in COVID-19 cases that threatens to overwhelm parts of the health system before a vaccine programme reaches a critical mass.

Israel’s health ministry authorises use of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine

US drugmaker Moderna Inc said on Monday that Israel’s health ministry had authorized its COVID-19 vaccine, marking the vaccine’s third regulatory authorization and the first outside North America. “Ministry of Health of Israel has secured 6 million doses and first deliveries (are) expected to begin in January,” Moderna said in a statement.

Moderna has received authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine in the United States and Canada and additional authorizations are currently under review in the European Union, Singapore, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

As per figures compiled by the Department of NonResident Keralites Affairs, 8.43 lakh people returned to Kerala from foreign countries between the first week of May 2020 and January 4 this year. Another big chunk of returnees, 2.08 lakh, stated that their job visas had expired or mentioned other reasons for their return. The rest include senior citizens, or children, and family members of expatriates.

Alleged Indian-origin drug kingpin shot dead in South Africa HiIndia Newsdesk Johannesburg: An alleged drug kingpin of Indian origin was shot dead at his home in South Africa in broad daylight, enraging his supporters in the community who beheaded the two suspected killers and set their bodies alight.

Yaganathan Pillay, popularly known as ‘Teddy Mafia’, was shot twice in the head at his home in Shallcross, which is a part of the sprawling Indian township of Chatsworth near Durban.

Pillay’s daughter let the two men in as her father was expecting guests. She later heard gunshots and found that her father had been shot, according to local police.

While some community members rushed Pillay to a local hospital, where he died from his wounds, others cornered the two alleged killers before shooting and stabbing them to death and then beheading them and setting their bodies alight in the street.

Pillay, 59, was charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition last year after a raid on his home in April.

He was hugely popular in the area because he was engaged in what one neighbour referred to as ‘Robin Hood’ activities, always assisting the community members, even if it was from alleged illicit earnings.

HiIndia Newsdesk Washington: India is currently the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world and is home to 21 unicorns valued at USD 73.2 billion, India's top envoy in the US has said, as he expressed hope that more than 50 startups might join the unicorn club as early as 2022.

“Entrepreneurial activity has picked up in India. In 2020 India was among

the top 50 innovative economies," India's Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu said.

"Today India is the third-largest, startup ecosystem in the world and is home to 21 unicorns valued at USD 73.2 billion. By some estimates, more than 50 ‘soonicorn' startups might join the unicorn club as early as 2022,” he said.

A unicorn is a term to indicate a privately held startup company valued at over USD 1 billion. Soonicorns are startup companies that are good candidates for late-stage investment and have a good possibility of becoming 'unicorns'.

Sandhu was speaking at a mentoring programme for Indian National Startup Awards 2020 finalists that was co-hosted by the Embassy of India, in partnership with Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF).

“The ministers accepted the CM’s suggestion and will make themselves available at their offices in the Vidhana Soudha twice a week for the legislators,” he said, adding that the initiative would turn out to be beneficial for all.

Savadi added that the BJP is planning to hold two conventions in the state during a scheduled visit by Union Home Minister Amit Shah later this month. “Separate conventions are being planned at Bhadravathi and Belagavi around January 15 and 16 when Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to be here,” he said.

S President Donald Trump’s relentless efforts to reverse the results of the 2020 election took a dangerous turn Wednesday, when an armed and angry mob of his supporters stormed Capitol Hill and clashed with police just as Congress convened to validate Joe Biden’s presidential win.

A woman was fatally shot in the violence that ensued as pro-Trump protestors breached barricades and advanced into the halls of the Capitol building, smashing windows and brawled with police officers in what is widely being considered one of the worst security breaches in US history.

The pandemonium appears to have deepened the divide within the Republican Party, with several leaders pointing a finger at Trump for inciting violence by urging his supporters to reject the results of the presidential election.

So, what happened at the US Capitol?

The Capitol in Washington DC was placed under lockdown Wednesday after hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the historic building and wreaked havoc in an attempt to stall the certification of the election results.

A raucous group of demonstrators — many of whom were waving ‘Trump 2020’ flags and wearing T-shirts and hats with the president’s signature ‘Keep America Great’ tagline printed — entered the second-floor lobby of the building right outside the Senate chamber, the doors of which were being guarded by law enforcement officials.

The mob managed to get past the guards and enter the Senate chamber, where just moments earlier the election results were being certified. According to the Guardian, one of the rioters was seen climbing up on the dias and yelling, “Trump won that election.”

The protesters roamed through the halls freely, some even entering and looting the offices used

by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other lawmakers. But the lawmakers from the Senate and the House of Representatives had already been evacuated.

The Trump supporters stopped to take photographs and film themselves as they made their way around the building. Videos show people breaking windows and pushing past barricades to forcefully enter rooms and offices in the Capitol.

Four hours after the breach, officials announced that the demonstrators had been cleared out of the building and the Capitol was secure. Senators were escorted back into the Senate chamber to complete the certification of electoral college votes.

At least four people died in the attack, including one woman who was shot in the chest and killed inside the Capitol building, CNN reported. According to Washington DC police, another woman and two men died in separate medical emergencies.

everal lawmakers, including members of the Republican Party, have blamed Trump for the violence that broke out in and around the Capitol. At the rally held in Ellipse park, lawmakers and critics have pointed out, the president directed his followers to head to Capitol Hill.

“And after this, we’re going to walk down there, and I’ll be there with you, we’re going to walk down…to the Capitol and we are going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,” he said. “And we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them. Because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong.”

He repeated his claims that the election had been “rigged” by “radical democrats” and the “fake news media”, urging his supporters not to accept the results of the election. “We will never give up. We will never concede. It doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved,” he said.

The President faced backlash yet again when he shared a message on social media and appeared to justify the violent mob’s actions while telling his supporters, “it’s time to go home now”. “I know your pain. I know you’re hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us,” he said in the video, which has since been removed. “It was a landslide election and everyone knows it, especially the other side.”

“But you have to go home now,” he said. “We have to have peace. We have to have law and order. We have to respect our great people in law and order. We don’t want anybody hurt. It’s a very tough period of time, there’s never been a time like this where such a thing happened, where they could take it away from all of us. From me, from you, from our country. This was a fraudulent election, but we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home, we love you, you’re very special. You’ve seen what happens, you’ve seen the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel, but go home and go home in peace.”

Rumours are rife that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is set to collaborate with Richa Chadha almost eight years after Ram-Leela (2013). The actor was recently spotted outside the filmmaker's Juhu office. A little bit of digging revealed that Chadha is in talks with the auteur to headline a web series that will be produced under his banner.

Bhansali will remain true to his signature style of lavish productions with this offering, which will mark his foray into digital entertainment.

In an interview , Kaul said the key to consistently doing good work is not about going on a signing spree. “When you do a good film or give a performance which people really like, the repercussion is that all the writers and directors want to cast you in the same role. That you’ve be patient enough to nicely refuse and wait for the right opportunity. I always take that gap… of a year to do my next. You have to be extremely patient. You can’t just be on a signing spree.

Instead Of Arresting Shoplifters, Police Officer Pays For Their Groceries

Five days before Christmas, Matt Lima of the Somerset Police Department in Massachusetts was dispatched to look into a shoplifting incident at a local supermarket outlet.

Upon his arrival, Officer Lima spoke to a store employee who told him that he had observed two women with two young children not scanning all their groceries and putting them directly inside their bags at the self-checkout kiosks.

"The allegation was the two females were scanning some items at self-checkout but bypassing other items and bagging those items," explained Officer Lima to WJAR. "Dispatch indicated it was two females and two young small children and they were detained by Loss and Prevention over there."

"I have two girls myself, similar on age to the two girls that were there, so it kind of struck me a little bit," he said.

Speaking to one of the women, the cop discovered that the mother of the children was "not working and had some other family issues going on and that what she had taken was Christmas dinner for the kids."

When he checked their receipt, he also saw that all they had bought was food - no other necessities.

The store issued the two women a "no trespass" order, but the police officer decided not to press charges. Sensing that the family was in need, Officer Lima decided to spend $250 worth of gift cards so they could purchase groceries for their Christmas dinner at another Stop & Shop location, the Somerset Police Department said in a statement.

Woman Falls Down 650-Foot Cliff Moments After Proposal

A romantic proposal ended in disaster for one couple as the woman fell down a 650-foot cliff moments after saying "yes". According to news website Bild, the incident occurred shortly after a 27-year-old man proposed to his girlfriend in Carinthia, Austria.

The woman, 32, accepted the proposal just moments before she slipped and plunged off the Falkert mountain on December 27. The couple had trekked up the mountain one day earlier.

Miraculously, the unnamed woman survived the 650-foot drop off the cliff - thanks to the snow breaking her fall.

Her partner, who tried to hold on to her, also lost his footing and fell 50 feet through the air. He was left gripping a cliff edge. Fortunately, they were both rescued after the woman was found lying motionless by a passerby, who contacted emergency services. Her fiance, meanwhile, had to be rescued by a helicopter from the cliff edge he was clinging on to. "The two were extremely lucky! Had it not been for snow, it would have turned out very differently," a police officer at the scene said, according to the Daily Mail. The two received medical treatment, and the man has been diagnosed with a vertebrate fracture.

Residents of the Hawaiian island of Oahu were left baffled last week as a mysterious blue object streaked across the evening sky before crashing into the ocean. A number of witnesses called 911 - USA's emergency phone number - to report sightings of the unidentified flying object on Tuesday, according to Hawaii News Now. Former Mercedes Employee Goes On $6 Million Wrecking Spree

A disgruntled former Mercedes Benz employee has been arrested for going on a wrecking spree at the company's plant in Spain. According to the Daily Mail, the 38-year-old allegedly destroyed around 50 brand new vans at the plant where he used to work, which is estimated to have caused around $6 million worth of damage.

On December 31, the former car factory worker stole a JCB which he drove to the factory located on an industrial estate in the Basque capital Vitoria. He then went on a wrecking spree, damaging several luxury vehicles.

According to Ladbible, the damaged vans included high-end V class vehicles, which were worth nearly 90,000 pounds, along with a number of electric Vitos.

Photos shared on social media show the extent of the damage he caused. Some pics show a door razed to the ground, while others show cars crushed in the attack.

The attack was so extreme that a security guard had to fire a shot in the air to get the suspect to stop while waiting for the police.

What do we know about this new variant?

The new UK variant, known as VUI–202012/01 or lineage B.1.1.7, was first announced

by Matt Hancock, the health secretary on December 14. It was subsequently confirmed by Public Health England and the UK’s COVID-19 sequencing consortium. Screening back through databases of SARS-CoV-2 the first sample was taken in the county of Kent on September 20.

The variant carries 14 defining mutations including seven in the spike protein, the protein that mediates entry of the virus into human cells. This is a relatively large number of changes compared to the many variants we have in circulation globally.

Is it more dangerous?

Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer, stated clearly that there was no evidence to date that this variant alters disease severity, either in terms of mortality or the seriousness of the cases of COVID-19 for those infected.

Work is underway to confirm this.

How do virus mutations happen?

Mutations are a natural part of virus evolution. In the case of SARS-CoV-2, these mutations may arise due to random errors

LG Display will demonstrate novel uses for its transparent OLED screens at CES 2021 with applications for food service, transportation, and smart home.

LG Display's "Smart Bed" concept is part the their Smart Home Zone and features a "frame" that hides a retractable 55-inch, transparent OLED display. The mobile frame can be moved from room to room depending on the needs of the owner, but it is primarily designed to placed at the foot of a bed. When the TV is in use, the display rises up from inside the frame, and the screen can be extended to various heights depending on the best screen ratio for the information being displayed. The frame
