Thank you.
We are truly defined by our partnerships. Sandbox ATL is the collaboration platform for Tech Square. Everything we do is focused on creating connections that fuel commerce. None of it would be possible without the support of our amazing partners. Each of these organizations share our belief that breakthroughs do not occur in a vacuum. Rather, they are the natural outcome of bringing bright minds from different disciplines together to learn from, inspire, and collaborate with each other. All of what you are about to read came about because of their support and leadership.

Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Book . Produced three times a year, this comprehensive community resource for Tech Square features the people, ideas, and companies found at the heart of Atlanta's tech scene. The fact you are even reading this is a testament to two truths: • An idea is only worth something if you can bring it to life • Teams bring ideas to life faster and better This past December, the Sandbox ATL team met for a half-day retreat to review lessons learned from the fall season and begin to plan our spring season. Taking a step back from the manic pace we tend to keep was eye-opening. Over the course of 2016, we had woven a robust web of community through the events, media content, and collaborative spaces we manage. However, what we didn’t have was an easy way to illustrate the connections, breakthroughs, and insights Sandbox ATL and our partners had helped make possible. It was in that realization we decided to produce an online publication at the end of the three natural Tech Square seasons (Jan-Apr, May-Aug, and Sept-Dec) that captured the stories and insights of what emerged at Tech Square in each time period. Thanks to a driven, inventive team of people, you hold the idea that has been brought to life much faster and better than I could have hoped for when the idea first emerged in December. Now, The Book is ready to give you a better understanding of the people and organizations who make Tech Square the heart of Atlanta’s tech scene. Hope you enjoy it, Scott Henderson Editor-in-Chief P.S. Be sure to let us know what you think of The Book !

And how the relationship between humans and technology will continue to change with developing AI? Artificial Intelligence The structure of our current professional economy dates back to the Industrial Revolution. We’re on the brink of another revolution, this one driven by automation. People are now in jobs whose daily workflow is massively impacted by new technology. Instead of traditional education, people will need to be retrained multiple times throughout their careers, which is one reason why MOOC’s have become so valuable. The implications of this shift are massive, and yet encompass only one small slice of the AI pie. The future of healthcare, transportation, government, public relations and more are yet to be determined. It’s sure to be a wild ride.

Power Meal: AI + Anything Hump Day Exchange: Dummies Talking About AI KEY FINDINGS
1 90% of developing autonomous driving is fairly straightforward to create, it’s the freak
accidents, the crazy scenarios, and strange liability moments that are difficult to control for.
2 Self-driving trucking is an easier sale than personal autonomous cars, and will probably
come sooner than you think. However, the last mile brings trouble because no town wants a 20-ton truck driving through it without a human controller.
is winning the AI race right now. Why? Because their bots have already crawled the 3 Google internet and formatted the data in a consistent way. 4 The future of IP Law within Artificial Intelligence will be a vital part of the progress of this technology. If only large companies have control and ability to patent their algorithms, then we inhibit smaller companies and entrepreneurs to use these and find new applications.
5 The idea of the human race merging with technology is not unique to AI. A pencil is an
extension of the human body. The internet is an extension of the mind. All technologies are enhancements of ourselves.

Tech Square is home to some of the brightest minds in technology conducting research and building products on the cutting-edge of emerging innovation, sometimes behind closed doors. Show&Tell blasts those doors open with a quarterly science fair-style demo day which focuses on a different emerging technology each time. In the middle of it all, three experts gave Fast Forward talks about the tech that will impact our lives three to five years from now. The first-ever Show&Tell tackled VR/AR. "How do we take the lessons we've learned from mobile and web and project that into this new medium?" asked Ian Nott, co-founder and CTO of ATDC company aetho.

VR/AR The rapidly evolving tech of virtual reality and augmented reality is rife with unknowns. Even the brilliant minds we interviewed for Show&Tell and Hump Day Exchange were challenged to present definitive predictions for how this technology will impact our lives five years from now. One thing’s for certain: augmented reality is going to encompass much more than visual illusion. How will innovations develop to engage every sense? How will we build experiences people are actually interested in (here’s looking at you, 3D TVs)? And perhaps the most pressing question of all: will humanity use the powers of VR/AR for good, or. . .? EVENTS
Show&Tell: VR/AR Power Meal: VR vs. IRL Power Meal: Monetizing VR Hump Day Exchange: Blurring the Lines of Reality KEY FINDINGS
1 VR research has been conducted for decades. However, only now is both private and public sector money getting poured into it.
2 Displays have a long way to go to accommodate VR. The technology hasn’t changed much yet; they’re just smaller and cheaper. We need breakthroughs in resolution, focal length, different forms and dynamic focal points.
3 Google Glass was built to perform as well is it could at a weight the team thought consumers would find acceptable. Consumers didn’t find it acceptable.
4 The increase in AR platforms opens a lot of cultural questions about how much help we’re willing to accept from technology. We must learn to differentiate between assistive and augmented technology.
5 Our current networking technologies don’t always have the bandwidth to support
streaming VR, especially in international communication. To help prevent these problems, assets are cached or created on both sides of the systems, so data doesn’t actually stream across the network.
