A B O U T S A N C TA In Sapientia Ambulate - Walk in Wisdom Sancta Sophia College is one of The University of Sydney’s six residential colleges which make up a rich part of its 168-year story. Our female Undergraduate building has been a home away from home for thousands of young women from regional Australia and metropolitan Sydney over the past 91 years. Our Graduate House, the first of its kind in The University of Sydney Colleges’ history, was opened in 2014 to further diversify the Sancta community and is now home to over 100 Postgraduate men and women who join us from across Australia and the globe.

The College motto – Walk in Wisdom – was laid out by our Founders and has remained the mission of every generation of College leaders throughout our 91-year history. The Sancta tradition of empowerment continues to create an inspiring, inclusive and supportive community for all.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL 06

I have been at Sancta for six months now, and even more than day one, I feel proud of our past and present, and excited for our future. You will see why in the pages that follow.

The stories shared in this magazine are representative of how I’m finding the Sancta community: the extraordinary branches of study, the talent and effort that is going into them. If you sit with any student at Sancta long enough, you discover not only individual people and personalities, but curious explorations into the world of academia. What is your latest assignment? Tell me more about that project? These are questions that never fail to open my eyes wider and wider to the diverse personality of Sancta.

The capacity and talent of Sancta students is also becoming clearer to me.

Semester 1 has seen students achieve great things in various realms of College life: • 165 students were recognised for their 2017 academic achievements at the June Academic Dinner.

• Rosebowl success: huge efforts in hockey, netball, swimming and rowing have placed us second overall as at the beginning of Semester 2.

• The beginnings of Rawson participation: with only 45 male students, we have competed admirably against John’s, Paul’s, Andrew’s and Wesley in Rowing and Swimming.

• Palladian triumphs: Alice Best came first for an extremely funny and hypnotic performance in Solo Drama, and Charlotte Target came third in Oration with a sophisticated and impassioned take on the topic of “hashtags”.

• Social justice: under the care of Josie Clarke and Louisa Sondergeld, Sancta’s commitment to supporting the wider community just keeps growing. Who would have thought that fire dancing could be part of social justice?

• Intramural achievement: Sancta won the Women’s Touch Football and Men’s Netball competitions. We also won Improvaganza with a team of Elizabeth Redpath, Alice Schwager, Ellie Solomons, Charlotte Target and Gabrielle Vella.

I have particularly appreciated getting to know the spiritual life of Sancta. Our Liturgical Secretary Maggie Sarkissian ensures a warm welcome to all at every Sunday Mass, and we are blessed with the presence of Fr Brian Lucas and Fr Roland Maurer. Our Masses are a highly valued Sancta tradition, and will grow as we welcome students of St John’s and other Colleges to join with us in our celebrations.

This month, we launch the first issue of The Anser, Sancta’s own interdisciplinary academic journal which marks the beginning of an incredible student-led legacy (see page

07

35), and our Professional Mentorships Program is also up and running.

At the end of Semester 1, we farewelled Maryanne Pidcock after four brilliant years as Vice Principal. Maryanne will be sorely missed, but happily for Sancta, given her extensive connection and commitment, she has agreed to keep in contact with us for a long time to come! In July, we welcomed Brigid Carrigan as the new Sancta Vice Principal. A Sancta alumna and former Senior Student, Brigid joins a unique and dedicated management team at Sancta.

As you read through the pages that follow, you will notice the one constant in every story – community. Our community is what makes Sancta so special, and as we begin to plan for our future — a future which ensures we can keep our physical environment beautiful and safe, and give the Sancta experience to deserving young people regardless of their financial circumstances – I ask you to consider how you can support us. by Mary Schnelle, Senior Student Mary Schnelle is from Corowa, New South Wales and is currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Arts/ Economics at The University of Sydney. Whilst completing her final three semesters, Mary aspires to land a graduate position in economics. Mary continues a family legacy at our College – with her mother Kate Ryan (Fresher 1985), her aunty Jen Ryan (Fresher 1986), and her sister Clare Schnelle (Fresher 2010 and Senior Student 2012) all having frequented Sancta’s hallways before her.

The air is filled with laughter and chatter as men and women dressed in long black academic gowns feed into the dining hall. As the tables start to fill, the students begin to pick at their bread rolls carefully placed on the table, one for each person. The students keep arriving and heads pop up to hail their friends to a table. The hall gets louder. It’s a Monday night, and we’re celebrating our weekly Formal Dinner.

Clapping erupts from the kitchen staff at the back of the dining hall, causing conversation to stop and chairs scrape as everyone rises to their feet. The dining hall is silent as High Table procession commences. The hockey team slyly winks and nods at their friends as they make their way to High Table. As the hall settles, Immediate Past Vice Principal Maryanne Pidcock chimes her wine glass, drawing attention to newly appointed Sancta Sophia College Principal Fiona Hastings, taking her place at the lectern.

Formal Dinner is one of the oldest traditions at Sancta. It is an opportunity for students to gather at the start of the week and share a meal. From enjoying a meal together, to listening to a notable guest speaker or an after-dinner performance, the night encompasses what it means to live at Sancta. Every week we celebrate the students who are achieving on the sporting field, academically or culturally. The guest speaker changes each week, and we have had notable figures including Belinda Hutchinson (Chancellor of the University of Sydney), Jess Miller (Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney City Council) and business woman Shivani Gopal, among others. These industry leaders have sparked conversations and aspirations while expanding our knowledge.

Furthermore, the after-dinner performances are a way to showcase the talent in our community.

In addition to having two winners, Dr Kieran Muir (Graduate House 2014) was also nominated for the Edmund Barton Medal.

I picked up the pencils as a small child, and never really stopped.

by Antoinette Radford Antoinette (Fresher 2017 Alumna) is studying a Bachelor of Arts/Advanced Studies (Media and Communications) at The University of Sydney. She currently works part-time as a News Librarian at SBS and wants to pursue a career in journalism.

A passion for art, an interest in architecture, and a search for a place to call home led Georgina Kreutzer to Sancta Sophia College in 2016. Georgina had heard of the College’s reputation as a loving, homely environment, and the excellence of Dr Marie Leech, former principal of the College. Hence, Georgina’s timely return from exchange created a perfect opportunity to begin life at Sancta.

Georgina studied a Masters of Architecture at the University of Sydney. For Georgina, art is her lifelong passion. During our conversation Georgina explained where this passion originated; “I picked up the pencils as a small child, and never really stopped.”

Pursuing her love for artistic endeavours continued from primary through to high school. However, when beginning at the University of Sydney, she accepted that it would be almost impossible to continue both her study and

artwork at the same time, and prepared herself to focus more on her textbooks. Despite holding qualifications in both an Undergraduate Bachelor of Architecture from Griffith University and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Sydney, she considers herself first and foremost an artist. Even so, Georgina largely acknowledges the role of her artistic capabilities in her architectural work.

For her, Sancta was a place where her interests were fostered and encouraged. It was not only the convenience of living on campus that saved time she could instead commit towards art, but also the role of Immediate Past Vice Principal Maryanne Pidcock and former College Principal of ten years Dr Marie Leech, who both knew of her interest and consistently encouraged her to pursue her talents. Georgina was a participant in the 2016 Palladian art competition, where she earned a Highly Commended award for Sancta. When Georgina was leaving the college,

Maryanne purchased five of Georgina’s artworks and donated the money into a scholarship that was given to an incoming student in 2017.

Georgina recently designed the cover of The Anser, Sancta’s new academic journal aimed at showcasing various articles and journals from members of the college community (learn more about The Anser on page 46). For her, the significance of the cover stemmed from inspiration taken from The New Yorker. A long-term fan of the magazine, Georgina was inspired by its creative cover artwork to craft a simple yet meaningful cover for The Anser. The idea was to not only pay homage to Sancta’s rich history as an all-girls College fostering women’s education, but also to amalgamate this concept with the current identity of Sancta to include its male presence. Georgina wanted to create an inclusive design, representing both postgraduate and undergraduate communities.

On top of all her artistic endeavours, studies and college participation, Georgina also pursued a passion for teaching.

She initiated online tutorials, gathering a plethora of followers, to explain and talk through some of the more confusing aspects of art and architecture. She would post

these to Youtube or Instagram and provide free lessons to those with questions. She’s now known as a professional influencer and plays a large role in the public sphere of teaching. Eventually this led to the American Paper Brand, Strathmore, teaming up with her to run a four-week workshop teaching a group of people how to engage with various techniques on a variety of subjects.

Maryanne Pidcock was aware of Georgina’s extracurricular life and nominated her for the Edmund Barton Graduate Medal, a prize awarded by the University of Sydney to a recent graduate with outstanding academic results and contributions to the broader community. Georgina was successful, and in 2018 was awarded the esteemed medal.

For Georgina, Sancta was an environment that encouraged her to excel, provided her with opportunities to pursue her passions, and later supported her with her artistic endeavours. The support she received from Dr Marie Leech and Maryanne Pidcock was fundamental in influencing her to follow her passion, and supporting her as she balanced all aspects of her university, College and teaching life

by Eliza McGowan Originally from Newcastle, Eliza is a Sancta Sophomore in her second year of a Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Sydney. When she isn’t studying or finding opportunities to exercise her passion for writing, she enjoys spending time with her Sancta friends and enjoying Sydney’s vibrant arts and culture scene.

Drew Trahms is a former resident of Sancta Sophia College, graduate of The University of Sydney with a Master in Political Economy, award-winner of the University’s 2018 John C Harsanyi Graduate Medal for international student achievement, and founder of Believe We are One, a nonprofit organisation.

Growing up in Minnesota, USA, Drew found her social calling in global citizenship. While studying a Bachelor’s degree, she partook in an initiative whereby she spent a year of her life living under the poverty line in North Dakota. She had an allowance of $900 USD per month - the equivalent of unemployment benefits in Australia. This was to cover all expenses including living arrangements and food.

The objective? To somehow grasp the confronting and eyeopening circumstances of those more disadvantaged than the average American.

Drew spoke of the shame and humiliation these people experienced whilst living such a lifestyle, explaining that she lived off food stamps because she was “too poor” to afford groceries.

When asked about what personally resonated with her following her experience, Drew expressed her realisation of the sheer privilege she has experienced over her lifetime.

She also voiced how in the back of her mind she always had a “safety net”, as she knew she realistically didn’t have the same financial stress other families endured. Not only was she privileged monetarily, Drew realised that being well-educated and having exceptional English literacy skills is also a modern day privilege.

As a result of her experience, it inspired and motivated Drew to move to Australia and create what is now called the Believe We Are One organisation.

Drew moved to The University of Sydney in 2015 to advance her studies in political economy, encouraged through a scholarship. Whilst in the process of moving, Drew searched for places to live on Google and stumbled across Sancta Sophia College. She spoke of her typical “international student experience” where she would Skype Immediate Past Vice Principal Maryanne Pidcock at all hours of the day, which led her to land a place in Sancta’s Graduate House.

Drew described herself as having a “global citizen Identity” as she had left her home country and moved to Australia.

Here, she felt, “not at home, but also not Australian”.

Consequently, Drew started a program that primarily focuses on holistically introducing global citizenship into US school curriculums.

With a goal to alleviate the considerably high rate of children leaving after primary school in Central America due to financial circumstances, Drew founded her Believe We Are One organisation. While living at Sancta and studying at university, Drew raised scholarship money and scouted sponsors to support children in rural Nicaragua throughout their secondary and tertiary education.

She spoke of the heartwarming feeling of watching sponsors develop a relationship with students, where they were willing to carry children all the way through high school and university, and even witnessing written correspondence between the two.

When asked of the challenges associated with her organisation, Drew mentioned that “it is sometimes difficult to find those who will contribute money towards scholarships, as well as supporting teachers who are under-resourced and overworked”.

Despite the challenges, Drew finds passion in her humanitarian work, where she works alongside her mother.

This working relationship nurtures their special bond.

Reflecting on her time at Sancta, Drew expressed the sense of home and community that she felt at Sancta.

She mentioned that Australian universities are somewhat lacking in “community life or the development of connections with students”, but she felt that Sancta allowed for a “tight-knit community”, which was “amazing for me”. Enhancing her experience were the “lifelong friends” she made at Sancta, with whom she is still in contact today.

Her contributions to Sancta did not go unnoticed. Drew participated in the Sancta Dance team and mentored Arts students. She felt “profound and honoured” to represent the College and to be involved in the history, community and creativity of Sancta.

When asked how she felt when awarded the John C Harsanyi Medal by The University of Sydney, Drew revealed she was “genuinely shocked”, and didn’t expect to win. In light of the achievement, she placed strong emphasis on the community that supported and raised funds for her project and expressed her honour to act as a voice for the students in Central America

The Academic Dinner celebrates high academic achievement by members of the College, including those who have been recognised in the University Honour Roll, by gaining High Distinctions and as recipients of various Special Awards and Prizes.

In addition, we recognise the recipients of scholarships awarded for academic achievement, various talents, leadership and contribution to College life. We are particularly thankful to the generous community members who contribute to these scholarships through their enduring philanthropy.

THE RESEARCH Edward is researching South Korean society’s changing use of a particular form of ‘honorifics’ present in Korean language.

Although honorifics exists in many languages, only Japanese, Korean and Javanese contain a rule whereby suffixes are added to verbs to indicate the social superiority of the subject of the sentence.

Edward’s research looks at some key changes to honorifics in Korean language in the past 10 years - one change being in the use of the suffix si-( ).

“If you are talking about someone who is higher than you socially, you have to add this little grammatical marker si-(( ) to the verb in the sentence. If the subject was my grandmother, I would use ‘si-( ) on the verb to show respect.”

Edward’s Honours Supervisor, a native speaker of Korean, suggested Edward undertake research as to why si-( ) is now being applied by younger generations when the subject is not a human, but an inanimate object.

FOR EXAMPLE: Baristas throughout South Korea will add si-( ) to the verb when the subject is the coffee (an inanimate object) that they have prepared for a customer.

Although they are, from a traditional standpoint, indicating the social superiority of the coffee (which would only make metaphoric sense to the most passionate of coffee-lovers), the intention behind this new use of si-( ) is about showing respect to the customer, not the coffee.

They are trying to lift the customer as the hearer of the sentence by applying si-( ) to the verb when the subject is coffee - an inanimate object.

“A new socio-linguistic norm has evolved in which the barista is showing respect and deference to the person with whom they have been commercially engaged to make a coffee.”

Edward’s research seeks to trace the evolution of this new use of si-( ), the differing attitudes towards it, and what this change may represent for socio-cultural relations in South Korea.

MEASURING ATTITUDES Edward conducted a survey targeting various groups of Korean native speakers, including members of the Australian Association of Teachers of Korean (AUATK) and found that older generations of Korean speakers are both baffled and worried by this new use of si-( ).

By using the suffix in these new contexts, younger speakers of Korean are using si-( ) as a ‘hearer-honorification’ device, rather than its traditional use as a ‘subjecthonorification’ device.

Not only does this go against the conventions of Korean language as everyone has learned it, it could represent a somewhat loosened approach to social hierarchy and its embedment in language.

Traceable to Confucianist influence which took hold in the 15th Century, Koreans generally consider hierarchy to be the foundation of a successful society.

“By indexing the social positions of interlocutors, honorifics become emblems of the hierarchy. Their appropriate use maintains the social relationship of sentence participants. It is for this reason that older generations oppose the apparent ‘misuse’ of honorifics by younger speakers.”

“The threat is felt so strongly that the Government of South Korea has launched campaigns to try to correct people’s language use.”

As a linguist, Edward believes there are no fixed rules in language.

“There should be no rejection of language change if it occurs naturally.”

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? Using Politeness Theory (Brown and Levinson 1987), and Social Identity Theory (Tajfel 1979), Edward looks at the changing uses of honorifics and how motivations such as the social desire to be polite, the formation of personal identity and other factors such as globalisation and digitisation, may account for the generational differences in attitudes towards these naturally occurring linguistic changes.

“Although there is likely a globalisation component, I believe to some extent that it also comes from within. I think the youth do have some sort of new power that they didn’t have before, for whatever reason. It could partly be because of digitisation - that there is a divide.”

In the final days leading up to his 20,000 word Honours thesis deadline, Edward Voet, a Sancta resident and linguist, agreed to meet with me for what I suspect was a welcome distraction from the dreaded ‘editing phase’ that awaited him in his Graduate House room. In just a few days, he would submit his thesis, move out of Sancta and board a plane to Europe; his new home for the duration of his Masters in Korean Studies at the University of Oxford.

In 2015, Edward received a study grant to attend a tour to North Korea.

Edward Voet’s path to becoming a fluent Japanese and Korean speaker started with a childhood fixation on the world of anime and gaming that is synonymous with Asian pop culture.

“I had three older brothers and there were a lot of students at my school from Asian backgrounds. We spent a lot of time watching anime and gaming at school. From a young age I was speaking Chinese with my friends at school – I don’t know how that happened.”

Edward notes that his immersion into Asian culture deepened over the years and became embedded in his personal identity.

“In Asia, my interests and my methods of self expression are completely acceptable, if not normal.

Here, gaming and anime - “nerdy” things - are not necessarily valued pastimes”.

Edward grew up in Sydney’s Upper North Shore and attended Sydney Grammar School.

“I gravitated towards students at school who shared the same interests, and I guess my curiosity and language skills grew from there”.

For his Undergraduate degree, Edward chose a Bachelor of Arts (Languages), majoring in Japanese Studies and Korean Studies.

“My high school focus had been on European languages - Classical Greek and Latin. I decided to start my degree with a Classical Greek major but then switched to a double-major in Japanese and Korean, inspired by a really interesting Korean elective unit I had taken.”

Starting both Korean and Japanese language from scratch as a first-year Undergraduate, Edward credits his foundations in Latin and Classical

Greek, and his time spent overseas, with fast-tracking his mastery of the two.

“I realised Korean was similar to Latin and Classical Greek in that they are all grammatically rich languages.”

Edward completed a semester abroad at The University of Tokyo, and was placed into an advanced 10-week Korean language course at Seoul National University.

“Just finding accommodation was a massive challenge, let alone studying a course taught completely in Korean whilst still at beginner level.”

Edward’s passion for linguistics runs deep. When asked what it is that kept him engaged in learning languages all this time, his response was simple and beautiful.

“I like the challenge and I like impressing people. It’s fun to shock native speakers with your ability to communicate with them. You meet Korean and Japanese people all over the world for whom your ability to speak their language is not an expectation, but an honour and a compliment.

CHOOSING ASIAN STUDIES “You don’t have to enrol in Asian studies to have an interest in Asian cultures. After seven months of studying in Tokyo, coming back to Sydney feels a bit like coming to a country town. Somehow, Australia has neglected Asia. We all learn French instead of Chinese - which makes no sense to me. “I think it makes sense for us to take an interest.”

The contrasts in linguistic expression are so pronounced between English and my additional languages - Korean and Japanese - that it’s almost like I need to adopt a completely different mind in order to communicate effectively. This is especially the case when trying to communicate humour.

CHOOSING SANCTA

There are things I can say in Korean that you can’t even think of saying or how to say in English, and vice versa.”

“I knew that the Postgraduate community was the largest of all the colleges and it was known for its diverse and welcoming culture.

A few of my friends from Sancta’s Undergrad had moved into Graduate House so they helped me to integrate into the Postgrad community.”

It became clear to me that there are parallels between Edward’s love of mastering other languages, and his love of anime and gaming - with all three realms requiring varying levels of role play in order to be successful.

Edward lived at another college during his Undergraduate years, but found himself spending “more than 60 percent of my time at Sancta”, having formed his friendship groups with mostly Sancta residents.

APPLYING TO OXFORD Edward was surprised to learn that his application to Oxford was successful.

“I just randomly applied one day and didn’t think much of it.”

What message do you have for other students who may feel this type of opportunity is out of their reach?

“Apply, even if you don’t think you have the qualifications, and be true to yourself in your application.

If you are truly passionate about something, the selection panel will pick up on that and they will react positively”.

What advice would you give Undergraduate students about choosing Postgraduate study?

You will be happier if you study something that you enjoy and love.

If you love something and you are good at it, then it will lead to a good outcome - even if you can’t pinpoint exactly what that is just yet.

Edward left Australia on 28 June to travel Eastern Europe for 3 weeks prior to settling in the UK where he has continued working for Cover Genius at their London office as a customer consultant for Korean and Japanese speaking clients. He commences his Masters of Korean Studies in October and will live on-

campus at Oxford’s Wadham College.

by Behzad Memarzadeh, Senior Common Room President Behzad left his home city of Vancouver, Canada and arrived at Sancta in 2017 after deciding to leave the business world behind in pursuit of a career in Medicine.

Currently in his second year of the Doctor of Medicine at The University of Sydney, Behzad’s passion for the Sancta community saw him elected as Senior Common Room President for 2018.

In today’s ever more competitive society, being able to distinguish oneself is the key to success. Of course, everyone has the same twenty-four hours in the day and how one spends it has a direct impact on their competitiveness. University Colleges, being hubs of academic, athletic, cultural, and leadership opportunity, provide a medium for everyone to be involved in as many activities as they can manage.

Moreover, living for an extended period with individuals from diverse backgrounds enables one to hone what likely is the most valuable challenges of the 21st century: intersectional communication. In other words, to be able

to communicate effectively with the lawyer, the engineer, the art historian and the doctor is a skill that one can consistently rely on, both professionally and personally.

By forming strong friendships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and fields, one can also be inspired by ideas specific to other fields and apply them to their own area of expertise.

While each College has its own cultures and traditions, Sancta’s are particularly well suited to the challenges of the 21st century. Being the first College with a coed postgraduate building, Sancta provides young women and men the opportunity to work together in addressing the community’s challenges. by Maggie Sarkissian, Liturgical Leader Maggie Sarkissian grew up in Parkes, New South Wales and is of Armenian heritage. As the only Armenian Apostolics living in Parkes, the Sarkissian family’s Church is over 350kms away. Maggie’s secondary education at Red Bend Catholic College allowed her to become closer with her faith, as she practised alongside the Catholic community at school. In her third year of a Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications) at the University of Sydney, Maggie is aspiring to work in publishing and editing.

There are several opportunities for everyone to engage in liturgical life at Sancta. Our Chapel is an inclusive space that is always open for students to pray, reflect and worship. On Sundays we host a Catholic Mass in the evening, where all are welcome to attend, no matter their faith. We also have priests who visit regularly and have become part of our community. They are always open to giving spiritual counsel to students.

Sancta is also involved in the intercollegiate liturgical circle. The Intercol Christian Group is a non-denominational group that meets regularly to host Bible studies, charity initiatives and other activities. Students from other Colleges are welcome to visit our Chapel at Sancta, and attend Mass if they wish to expand

Once a year, the Archbishop of Sydney shares Mass with us, celebrating the Catholic community that Sancta is an active part of. Sancta shares its Catholic values with all residents and the wider community; we practice solidarity through our Social Justice initiatives, and raise funds and awareness for causes such as School for Life, Herd of Hope, Bear Cottage, Fox G1 Foundation, and many more.

Scholarships and Bursaries Fund: Used to award College scholarships to students who promise to add to Sancta’s academic, cultural and sporting reputation, and to support students experiencing financial difficulty.

Our goal is to raise an additional $1m for this Fund by June 2019.

MEETING OUR INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTS In Semester 1, Sancta was home to several international and exchange students joining us from various continents. We caught up with Flavia Charlton, an Undergraduate Exchange student from Spain, and Wenbo Song, a Postgraduate from China, to learn more about their Sancta journeys.

BEST THING ABOUT SANCTA Aside from the freedom and independence it has allowed me (having only ever lived with my parents or at boarding school), I have made some beautiful friends from all over Australia and other countries who have become like family here at Sancta. There are so many opportunities to meet new people and spend time with your friends, such as dining together, competing in Intercollege competitions and enjoying all that Sydney has to offer. You’re never alone here.

BEST THING ABOUT SYDNEY The beaches. They’re all so beautiful and so close by.

The closest beach to Madrid is in Valencia – nearly a four-hour drive.

Advice for future exchange students: First of all – make sure you do it. And choose a country that will be significantly different to your own – where people speak a different language and offer you the opportunity to have your understanding of the world challenged and expanded. When you get there – don’t spend all of your time with friends from the same country – make an effort to meet new people.

I attended boarding school in England and my father went to College during his university years at Cambridge. I had always wanted to come to Australia and my degree included a study abroad component, so naturally I chose Sydney.

When researching accommodation options, Sancta appealed to me because it was a safe environment where I would have the opportunity to meet lots of Australians and learn more about the culture.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE IN SPAIN AND AUSTRALIA The people here are more calm, more chilled. Even in the way they dress – it’s a very calm culture.

I want my double degree to give me the scope to forge a career in international business and/or finance. I can see myself in management or consulting. I would love to find a graduate opportunity in Sydney in the future.

TOURIST ADVICE FOR MADRID See as much culture as you can. You must go to Museum Prado, Directiro Park and to Plaza Mayor to have a “bocarillo de calamaris” – a calamari sandwich!

WENBO SONG D EG R E E Masters of Public Health, The University of Sydney F RO M Nanjing, China A R R I V ED I N AUS T R A L I A January 2018 ROAD TO SANCTA After completing my Bachelor of Public Health at Nanjing Medical University, I knew that USyd’s School of Public Health had been ranked number 1 in Asia-Pacific which led me to want to come to Sydney for my Masters. I met the previous Marketing and Development Manager, Michele Dunn, at the USyd Postgraduate Expo in Shanghai in 2017.

She showed me photos of Graduate House and I really liked the modern layout and furniture throughout; it was more spacious and clean than many other international student options. The idea of not needing to worry about cooking and cleaning (as it is all provided) really appealled to me as I knew I would be very busy.

Living at Sancta has allowed me to engage authentically with a lot of Australians; I’ve learned a lot about the culture and have found everyone to be very friendly. We are a diverse community with students from other countries as well, so I feel my cross-cultural communication has grown significantly as a result of living here. I don’t drink but that hasn’t stopped me from feeling welcome to attend social events with my friends and enjoy myself.

A career in Public Health can take many forms in China and other countries. I can work for NGOs, government organisations and in research roles for universities and industry bodies. I am interested in health economics and biostatistics and would like to forge a career that enables me to positively impact health outcomes for populations through my work.

I’ve managed to fit in some travel up and down the east coast – a highlight has been my two trips to Queensland – once with a German friend from Uni, and another time with friends of my parents who live in Sydney.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LIFE IN CHINA AND AUSTRALIA My lifestyle here is not particularly different to in Nanjing, however, I am loving being in this beautiful country and seeing and learning new things. The difficult part is being away from my parents and my cousins who I would see regularly in China.

I may go to another country after I complete my degree – possibly to Europe to do a Research Master.

MESSAGE TO THE SANCTA COMMUNITY Sancta staff and student leadership create such a wonderful environment. They devote a lot of time and effort to our community and are always so supportive.

Sancta in the 80s 1981 Sancta Magazine was reinitiated after an absence of 20 years. The Magazine Committee – comprising Janet Hunter, Danusia Kucharska and Sandra Koller noted that the resistance to their mission was overcome “by persistent propaganda”.

The Night Portress, Mrs Dooner, reached 20 years of service to the College. Mrs Dooner would wait at the Missenden Road Door until 10.00pm each night for girls without passes.

A Mass and party was organised to celebrate Mother Arnold’s 90th birthday. Sancta’s Choir sang at the Mass, including a specially composed birthday song.

Students attended a Buck’s Party and Shower Tea for Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer at St Paul’s College.

Sancta students combined forces with St Paul’s College Cellar and organised a port bottling to raise funds for the Formal, held offsite at the University Union facilities. Three hundred bottles of port bearing the Sancta Sophia College label were bottled.

Sancta Sophia College was victorious in the inter-college basketball competition, resulting in the College’s solitary Victory Dinner for the year.

Encouraged by Principal Sr Patricia Toohey, work began to record Sancta’s history

The 1984 Blake Prize for Religious Art was won by a former Sancta Sophia student, Mary Hall (nee Nathan), with a mosaic inspired by the opening chapter of Genesis.

Sister Mary Shanahan commenced as Principal in Third Term.

Coincidentally, the same Council meeting which approved the appointment of Sister Shanahan as Principal also noted amendments to the Sancta Sophia College Act allowing the Principal to be other than a nun.

The retiring House Committee of 1984 instituted two new awards at the College: Sportswoman of the Year, and an Honours Board to be inscribed with the names of academic high achievers.

Sancta’s pre-1801 holdings from the John Lane Mullins Collection and General Library were placed on permanent loan in the Rare Books Section of USyd’s Fisher Library to preserve these rare treasures.

The Provincial Order of the Sacred Heart agreed to make Sr Shanahan’s services available to Sancta for another five years. The Council approved and extended her appointment as Principal by unanimous decision.

Success on the tennis court in 1987 ensured another Victory Dinner would be held the following year.

The Ex-Students’ Association donated the Nita Macrae Award for Leadership (in honour of Sister Nita Macrae, Principal from 194357). The inaugural recipient was Jacqueline Loo.

SISTER MARY SHANAHAN SCHOLARSHIP LAUNCH DINNER

An excerpt from the event speech of Sister Mar y Shanahan (Sancta Alumna, past Vice Principal, and Principal from 1983 –1992) : Sancta has been more for me than the fulfilling of a role.

The name and the motto of the College lay out a way of life for all who live within. Sancta Sophia, Holy Wisdom.

wherever we work, wherever we go. For wisdom is more than academic knowledge, though the College has great programmes to foster that.

The Warden of St Paul’s College at the time congratulated those responsible for the name as it gave a direction to the whole meaning of a College within the University of Sydney.

It is a growing understanding in who I am as a person, in recognising the gifts I have to bring life to others, in growing in courage to face the difficulties presented by life and not give up.

You can compare this with the writer of a letter to the Freeman’s Journal, now the Catholic Weekly. He called it a ‘mongrel concoction’ for mixing Latin and Greek. I can only think the students would be grateful that the Greek version of holy —hagia — was not chosen, resembling too closely the English ‘hags’. The Greek form of wisdom, Sophia was chosen in honour of Madeleine Sophie Barat, Foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart who was canonised in 1925, the year of the laying of the foundation stone.

As a student, walking in wisdom is gaining a balance between study, social life and spiritual life which is understood as a growth in self knowledge, self-acceptance and gratitude for life.

Our motto, In Sapientia Ambulate, to Walk in Wisdom, presents us with a challenge.

Walking in wisdom is not just for our time in College.

It is hopefully a challenge we take from College into

Sancta Sophia College, ‘House of Wisdom’ has given so much to me and I am grateful for the constant challenge to walk in wisdom. It has managed to keep me on the straight and narrow and to help me be the Religious of the Sacred Heart that is my life.

I thank each one here for what you have done to help other students experience the wisdom of academia and of life open to the world.

2 I feel so lucky to be Sancta’s Social Secretary for 2018.

It’s been a lot of work but definitely rewarding with Semi Formal – ‘A Morrocan Night’ being the highlight so far. The night was enjoyed by all with the star of the show, Cadbury the Llama, successfully stealing our hearts. We also had the Mother/Daughter Dinner - it was lovely to see so many proud mums enjoying a night with their girls. A huge thank you to our Semi-Formal Secretary, the beautiful Elsa Presslaber and amazing SubCommittee girls, for all their efforts to make this semester the huge success it has been. I can’t wait for another fabulous semester, with Silly Season, Safari and Formal still to look forward to.

A Sancta student initiative led by Amelia Anne-Merz (Founder and Outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Graduate House 2014), the inaugural issue features six articles by Undergraduate students and alumni, covering the subject areas of international relations, political science, media and communications, art history, global religious studies, and chemistry.

The publication title, The Anser, is a playful Latin tribute to Sancta’s cherished mascot, The Goose. The Goose can be noticed in the publication’s cover art, designed by Sancta alumna Georgina Kreutzer (Graduate House 2016).

Amelia Anne-Merz established the project whilst working as an Academic Mentor in 2016, recognising the scope it would have to celebrate and strengthen Sancta’s culture of academic excellence and collegiality.
