Five things San Clemente should know this week Reserve Files Restraining Order against Toll Roads THE LATEST: The latest edition to San Clemente’s fight against the Transportation Corridor Agencies’ (TCA) proposal to put a toll road through San Clemente took place last week, when members of The Reserve Corporation filed a restraining order against any toll road construction south of Oso Parkway in Mission Viejo.

“We filed an application…for a preliminary injunction blocking the TCA from moving forward with the proposals they’ve brought forward to extend the 241,” said Dan Bane, a local environmental attorney who has worked with anti-toll road organizations in San Clemente.

The application was denied, but Bane said the plan is to refile the motion in order to give the judge enough time to decide. The first time the application was denied, Bane said, was due to short notice of the demand.

The Reserve’s lawsuit joins the city’s lawsuit against the TCA’s protective agreement that excludes areas where a toll road could have been constructed. That agreement was forged between the Save San Onofre Coalition and the TCA in 2016.

WHAT’S NEXT: Currently, there is a bill in the state Legislature that, if passed, would restrict the 241 Toll Road to its current terminus at Oso Parkway and prevent the TCA from extending that route through the 91. The bill’s introduction states that the existing law for the 241 permits it through San Clemente to connect to Interstate 5. The bill, AB 2796, was introduced by Assemblyman Rocky Chavez of the 76th district. Chavez, a Republican, is currently running for Congress in the 49th district, which includes San Clemente.

OC Board of Supervisors Reject Mayors’ Proposal for Santiago Canyon Shelter THE LATEST: A meeting took place on April 19 at the Ole Hanson Beach Club in San Clemente where the mayors of San Clemente Times April 26-May 2, 2018

Orange County cities met to decide where to put a regional homeless shelter. It appeared as though they had come up with a solution and recommended that a space in the outskirts of Orange County, an old and unused elementary school, would work.

But the Orange County Board of Supervisors rejected the idea late Tuesday, April 24 after a closed-session meeting.

“I understand the urgency to house the homeless, but placing them in a brand new $6.8-million project built for families perhaps is not the answer,” said Supervisor Todd Spitzer, who represents the district where the shelter would have been located, in a statement on April 20. “Any place that has ‘Baby & Me Storytime’ should not be under consideration. In addition, the state has designated this area a ‘Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.’”

Southern Orange County cities have been criticized by northern cities as not doing their diligence in providing adequate space and resources for a homeless shelter. The cities of Irvine, Laguna Niguel and Huntington Beach pushed back against the supervisors after it was suggested to put tent encampments on county-owned land within the cities.

Last week, the nonprofit iHope took members of the press through several sites in South Orange County that could be turned into shelters. City managers pushed back on the notion and said that they have procedures already in place.

“All of us have established formal relationships with nonprofit service providers like Family Assistance Ministries (FAM) and others who have proven track records of service to our community,” San Clemente City Manager James Makshanoff said in a press release on April 20. “We will continue to work through those well-established and community-supported organizations to address these issues.”

The mayors sent a letter to Supervisor Lisa Bartlett stating that the Santiago Canyon site would be the best location. It wasn’t enough to garner support.

“The mayors of the South Orange County SPA (service plan area) are ready to take all steps necessary to move forward expediently with the site as an emergency homeless shelter,” a letter signed by the South County mayors stated. “The cities also understand that the court is ready to assist jurisdictions in this process should legal challenges arise. The county has direct experience in developing and implementing such a plan, having recently done so in less than 90 days at The Courtyard (former OCTA bus depot) in Santa Ana. The site’s smaller size and current improvements to electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems, should enable the site to be quickly opened.”

San Clemente Hospital: Two Years Later THE LATEST: San Clemente has been without a hospital for two years now, and the consequences of a lawsuit related to its closure have sat in waiting in federal court ever since.

Officials with MemorialCare Health System, the owner of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center when it was operational and the current owner of the property, said they are waiting for Judge David O. Carter’s decision.

The case is kind of in two parts: The first is to decide whether or not San Clemente’s zoning ordinance that was adopted in 2016 is compliant, and if so what damages are awarded. But if the judge finds the city’s ordinance was not compliant, the civil case would go to trial to determine what MemorialCare is owed.

The lawsuit the health services provider filed in 2016 demands $42.5 million from the city of San Clemente.

“It would (determine) the damages of the taking of space, if the court found that the city’s zoning was illegitimate,” said City Attorney Scott Smith, adding that if the court ruled in favor of the city, “I don’t know if that would be the end of it. We think that would probably resolve the dispute. I think the city is having the same hope that the property could be actively marketed as a hospital. They want it to be utilized for the designated space, and that’s been kind of the whole issue, whether the owner has been trying to keep it closed or sell it.”

“A hearing on the first stage of the case occurred back in February, and the court will be rendering a decision on that part of the case,” Struthers said. “The second phase of the case deals with other issues and will proceed later this year on a separate track.”

Mostly what San Clemente locals have wanted is a hospital, no matter who operates it. As MemorialCare owns the San Clemente property, located at 600 Camino De Los Mares, the operators wanted to turn the facility into an urgent care location. But residents and City Council at the time rejected that notion, opining for an emergency room and hospital facilities.

In 2016, the city zoned the property as required to provide emergency services.

That initiated the federal lawsuit from MemorialCare, which claimed the city “spot zoned” the land on which the hospital sits.

Best, Best & Krieger, LLP and City Attorney Scott Smith have been arguing on the side of the city to defend its actions.

A decision on whether the city was within its right to do so was expected to be announced in late February or March, but the federal judge who is hearing the case is also hearing the lawsuit between Orange County Catholic Worker and the County of Orange regarding what to do with homeless people who were removed from the Santa Ana riverbed and Civic Center. Therefore, it’s been pushed back for weeks, almost months.

Underwater Torpedo League Playoffs, Aqua Bowl II return to Aquatics Center THE LATEST: As the Underwater Torpedo League (UTL) continues to grow, another set of championship weekends has been scheduled.

On Saturday, April 28, the playoff round robin tournament will take place featuring teams from San Clemente, the University of San Diego and Oceanside.

The matches are live-streamed on a television above water so people can see what’s taking place.

“The UTL is an underground sport, founded in Southern California, that is played in the deep end of swimming pools between two teams of five players,” according to a press release from the UTL. “The object of the game is to deposit a water torpedo through a hockey goal while remaining underwater.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The playoffs are 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 at the San Clemente Aquatics Center. Aqua Bowl II will be the same time and location on Saturday, May 5.

Horse Stable in San Juan Capistrano Quarantined For Equine Herpesvirus Six horses in total have tested positive for Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), a potentially fatal virus, at Sycamore Trails Stables in San Juan Capistrano as of Wednesday, April 25, since a two-week quarantine began on Friday, April 13 when a first horse tested positive and was placed in isolation.

Sycamore Trails Stables Manager Dave Provence confirmed that one of its horses tested positive for EHV-1 and the stables will be in quarantine. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) issued a statement on April 13 that a horse from an Orange County facility was isolated after testing positive for the virus.

The CDFA statement has not included that Sycamore Trails Stables is the Orange County facility that is under quarantine.

The horse that first tested positive, a 17-year-old gelding, has taken residence at Sycamore Trails Stables for years, Sycamore Trails Co-Manager Roxanne Euhus said. The gelding was diagnosed outside of the stables at a hospital, showing neurological symptoms of EHV-1, and is currently in a hospital in San Luis Rey, Euhus said.

EHM may be caused by damage to blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord associated with EHV-1 infection, according to the CDFA. “To date, there have been five confirmed febrile cases of EHV-1 and the one index case of (EHM) which remains isolated and quarantined off site,” a CDFA statement said on Tuesday, April 24. “Staff continues to be onsite monitoring the situation.”

Dana Point Man Charged with Four Counts of Sexual Misconduct with a Minor The Orange County District Attorney’s office has charged Bradley Thomas Williams, 34, of Dana Point, with four counts of felony sexual misconduct with a 13-year-old female from Huntington Beach. Court records show Williams was charged with intent to commit a crime, meeting a minor to commit lewd conduct and lewd or lascivious acts with a minor younger than 14 years old.

If convicted, Williams could face a maximum sentence of 13 years in state prison.

The events occurred between June 1 and Aug. 30, 2015.

Williams is one of four men who have been charged for contacting the 13-yearold female. Dwight Castaldi,42, of Palm Beach, Florida; Christian Palmer, 27, of Sacramento; and Sohrab Anaraki, 33, of Topanga, who according to Huntington Beach Police Services used fake names on several social media platforms including MyLOL, Snapchat, KIK, Skype and Facebook, to communicate with the female.

The four men allegedly do not know one another.

as it really 50 years ago that one million people filled the streets of our nation demanding we stop the Vietnam War? That Baby Boomer generation marched to end the slaughter of thousands of teenage American kids who were being killed in the name of protecting America’s freedoms. President Richard Nixon labeled them as communist dupes. Vice President Spiro Agnew labeled them nattering nabobs. Some religious leaders called them spoiled brats.

“America, love it or leave it,” they sneered.

But a funny thing happened: the war was forced to end. Black people won the right to vote. Corrupt leaders’ crimes were exposed. And America became a better place—more honest, more egalitarian and more idealistic.

Now, the Boomer’s children and grandchildren are marching. They too are protesting the slaughter of teens. And once again they are scorned and threatened by old and bitter partisans who cannot see the tide of history changing. This Millennial generation, however, seems far better prepared than the Boomers—more eloquent, tolerant and disciplined; more tempered in their efforts—and perhaps far more effective. By responding peace-

fully, intelligently, morally, they shame their mocking attackers. As David Bowie noted years ago “…and these children that you spit on, as they try to change their world, are immune to your consultations; they’re quite aware of what their going though.”

These students have substituted the National Rifle Association for a WAVELENGTHS better way. Whether it be

Mothers, fathers, soldiers and students stood for something bigger than a tax break or another brick in the wall. They didn’t stand so much for making America great, because it was understood that the real America was already great—they stood for making America good.

Today, young people are standing again.

But here is the big difference: these kids are not planning to tune in, turn on and drop out – they are planning to read up, write up and step up – right to the ballot box. Four million high school students turn 18 this year. And another four million for the next three years after. San Clemente is a city of law and order.

We respect our federal, state and local law enforcement that keep our communities safe. So, it makes no sense to sit back and do nothing about a sanctuary state law that makes the job of law enforcement officials more dangerous, difficult and our communities less safe.

It’s our duty to join more than a dozen, and growing, Orange and San Diego County cities and proclaim our opposition to California’s sanctuary state law.

The issue is not about opposition to immigrants—as critics allege—but about keeping “illegal alien” criminals from entering or re-entering our communities.

We need our City Council to stand up for what is right and proclaim our city’s

Hiking one of my favorite local trails—a winding sage-scented mountainside singletrack created by mountain bikers for mountain bikers and me—the other day, I came across a tossed wrapper for “salted watermelon organic energy chews.” As I picked it up and stuffed it into my pocket, I started thinking about signs I see constantly on my hikes of what I call hypocrite hikers/bikers.

Think about it: This person opts for organic; elects to nurture a clean, healthy body as they exercise muscles, lungs and heart outdoors; probably preaches their clean, organic, style of outdoor living to families and friends, then thoughtlessly pollutes the planet as they pursue their sport, knowing

you and I will have to pick up after them.

Then there’s the dog owner who selfrighteously plucks a doggie bag (Good for them!) out of the trailhead dispenser, then keeps it in their pocket and walks on if there’s no one else in sight when their dog does his number on the trail, or who fails to deploy the bag when their pup poops in the dirt on the edge of the paved path (where I usually walk because it’s easier on the joints), setting up an unsuspecting wild animal for a domestic-animal gut disease.

Or, perhaps worst in the environmental scheme of things, bags the poop and leaves the bag beside the trail—donating plastic as well as poop to the ecosystem.

I admit, I don’t pick up every piece of trash I walk by on the trail, and I feel hypocritical when I choose not to. But I do stuff as much trash in my daypack as my pace and purpose permit and make it a point to pick up at least one thing on every hike, so I feel I’ve left the trail a little better than I found it. They say you can judge your character by what you do when no one is watching. I try not to forget that the hiker/biker behind me is watching.

Thank you for your cover story “The Humane Condition” in your April 12-18 issue of the San Clemente Times. It’s important we know the stories of those who live on the street. We are in trouble as a society when we lump everyone together as “the homeless” or talk about “the homeless problem.” As soon as we forget they are real people with real stories, we are destined to dehumanize them to the point of disregard or even violence.

Gandhi said, “A nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.”

The people who live on our streets are our most vulnerable. They may have unfortunate ways of expressing that, which might include antisocial or disruptive behavior. Our homeless need specific, individualized care, not hatred. We need to bring them into a relationship on whatever level they can receive it.

I am glad Orange County leaders are making real strides to offer housing and additional services to our weakest members. Yes, it’s true, there are people living on the street who tell us they prefer the carefree lifestyle, but please consider anyone who lives outside away from people has had many unfortunate circumstances or decisions that led to their situation. As a society, we need to offer thoughtful compassion, even to those who live differently than we do. I am hoping the city of San Clemente will follow the lead of neighboring cities and offer permanent supported housing as well as mental health and addiction services. We are so blessed to live here; we have a moral imperative to care for those who do not have enough.

GET INVOLVED AT BUDGET MEETINGS LINDA WILLAMS, San Clemente

The city will hold a budget workshop/ hearing on May 21 and then a City Council meeting on June 5 for consideration of adopting the fiscal year 2018-19 budget.

The meeting is set for 4-8 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, located at 100 Avenida Presidio.

Regarding a letter submitted in the April 5-11 edition of the San Clemente Times, “What I Really Think Caused the Florida School Shooting,” to allege that President Barack Obama and then-Attorney General San Clemente Times April 26-May 2, 2018

Eric Holder did “everything they could to destabilize and promote lawlessness in this country” is an absurd, irresponsible and frankly un-American statement.

If anything, I would submit that Donald J. Trump has truly been guilty of such behavior.

Second, “The Promise Program,” a program that was developed in Broward County by school and other local authorities to include the police department, has been helpful and deemed successful. It has helped students who have committed a minor or nonviolent offense. Yes, there was definitely a lapse with reporting concerns about Mr. Cruz, the alleged shooter at the school, to proper authorities and taking subsequent appropriate action, but that had absolutely nothing to do with this program.

Third, this program was hardly “insidious or callous.” It was open, transparent and a success that had no provision to ignore or deflect potentially serious or dangerous student behavior.

Fourth, lawlessness has simply not taken over this country in the name of fake statistics to promote any Democratic agenda.

That, simply, is a slanderous, dishonest and disrespectful allegation on your part.

Lastly, the factions named in the letter are not out to “destroy your Second Amendment rights,” though that is what the right-wingers want people to believe.

The Second Amendment is hopelessly outdated and derives from a distant time when we might have really needed a “well-armed” militia. Now, it is primarily a facade that the NRA, the gun manufacturers, the gun lobbyists and the right-wing advocates all hide behind so as not to be forced to confront, in a constructive manner, the reality of continued mass gun violence and slaughter of our children and other innocent citizens (not just in Broward County). The Democrats and liberal members of our society are not out to disarm responsible gun owners and citizens, but rather seek to promote more sensible gun laws so that future Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shootings will be much less likely to occur.

At the Movies: Hedy Lamarr Was More than a ‘Bombshell’

t feels crazy to associate someone as iconic and regarded as Hedy Lamarr with the word “underrated,” but she has been in many ways. For decades, film fans have viewed her as one of the most beautiful and glamorous movie stars in Hollywood history— which she is, naturally. But at home, she was also very creative and interested in science through inventions. Alexandra Dean’s recent documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story sheds some light on the remarkable history and life of the film legend.

Born as Hedwig Kiesler in Vienna, Austria, Hedy spent her teens and early 20s acting in local Austrian films, most infamously the softcore-dirty flick Ecstasy (1933). By the time she was 23, L.B Mayer got her a contract with MGM, changed her name to Hedy Lamarr and

had her first Hollywood role in Algiers (1938) to positive reception. Her hit films in the 1940s would include Boom Town (1940) and Ziegfeld Girl (1941).

Out of the limelight, Hedy spent most of her time inventing things like her own carbonated drink and, most notably, a frequency-hopping signal.

Dean’s documentary fortunately features a lot of commentary by Lamarr’s own children and friends, as well as noted historians like Peter Bogdanovich and Robert Osborne. Bombshell not only covers the good parts of her career, like her fascinating fling with Howard Hughes or how her frequency invention paved the way for modern WiFi, but also her unhappy marriages and unfortunate methamphetamine addiction. Bombshell will hopefully not only be seen as a love letter to its subject, but also help keep Lamarr’s legacy as an inventor alive. SC

As the vast majority of the nerves from the stomach go to the brain, the mix and diversity of the bacteria in our gut can greatly influence its power. Therefore, the more diverse the bacteria in our gut, otherwise known as microbiome, the healthier the person typically is, according to Why Isn’t My Brain Working? by Dr. Datis Kharrazian.

Unfortunately, people in the United States have some of the lowest rates of gut microbiome. Low diversity in gut bacteria have been correlated with obesity, heart disease, immune dysfunction and neurological diseases. Therefore, gut health is one of the most important areas of the body to focus on healing since it has a direct correlation to the brain and all bodily functions.

A typical patient question I hear is, ‘why is my gut more sensitive than the guy sitting next to me, consistently eating plates of greasy nachos with beers, feeling just fine?’

Gut symptoms can take a while to develop, as it starts with our genetic profile, but is eventually influenced by many lifestyle choices including, but not limited to: lifetime stresses, injuries, drug exposure, surgery, diet, other diseases, even how you were delivered and whether or not one was breast fed. These all affect the microbiome in the gut. Therefore, it is not practical to compare yourself to the nacho and beer guy.

Simply put, the human digestive tract starts from the mouth to the stomach where acids break down food, sending it to the small intestine, which introduces nutrients to the blood stream followed by the large intestine; which forms unwanted waste.

Severe chronic abdominal pain, excess gas, inability to digest foods, yeast overgrowth and brain fog are some of the most common symptoms associated with gut problems, from “The Neuroendocrine Immunology of Mucosal Activity” lecture by Kharrazian. The digestive tract at this point tends to be unable to release enzymes to break down our food that we need to absorb for fuel.

Proper bowel movements and a healthy communication of the nervous and endocrine system are affected. The longer these symptoms are untreated, the more severe the destruction is in the lining of the gut with the potential of triggering a permanent autoimmune disease.

The ‘pro’ in probiotics I have many patients that come in with gut symptoms

and are taking a general probiotic. The initial drawback is that one size does not fit all. There are different types of probiotics for different gut problems. For example, we would administer different probiotic strains for someone who is suffering from small intestine bacteria overgrowth, versus someone who has leaky gut disease in the large intestine, according to “The Neuroendocrine Immunology of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth” by Kharrazian.

There are different strands for different gut conditions.

Some conditions even call for probiotic enemas or fecal transplants—yes, it might sound crazy, but this is happening. It is important to first establish a proper diagnosis before deciding on the appropriate protocol.

Other potential natural solutions overlooked prior to adding a probiotic into a regular health routine include: • Using an appropriate supplement for a short period of time that helps kill the overgrowth of bad bacteria.

• Eliminating sugars from the diet altogether, as sugar feeds bad bacteria. Follow a low sugar, low carb diet high in healthy fats.

• Eating fermented foods that help with digestion or consider digestive enzymes.

• Ingest L glutamine, collagen, bone broth, short chain fatty acids, butyric acid and medium-chain triglycerides oil all heal the lining of the gut and increase the gut microbiome and absorption.

• Finding tools to help you increase sleep, exercise and sweat while decreasing stress.

• Do an annual gastrointestinal cleanse to give your gut a break. A cleanse should address food changes with supplements to help maximize the results with agents that help kill bad bacteria and replenish good bacteria.

• Limit antibiotics, if needed, use a probiotics after consumption.

• Eat as many diverse kinds of plant foods that you can tolerate. Don’t be a creature of habit; go to the farmers’ market each week, find that plant that you don’t know about, then buy it and cook it.

There are many possible solutions to initially fixing the gut. Probiotics serve a useful and beneficial purpose, especially when maximized with the proper diagnosis. Diversifying gut bacteria will promote a happy and vital gut life.

EASTERN HEALING Traditional Chinese medicine is a more natural approach to pain, anxiety, stress relief

BY DANIEL RITZ t has taken decades for acupuncture, formally known as traditional Chinese medicine, to be integrated into Western culture since international relations with China have opened up in the 1970s.

“We let the body heal itself,” explains Mike Hsu, acupuncturist and co-founder of Pacific Acupuncture enter in Dana Point.

Hsu and Mia Chou, fellow acupuncture practitioner and co-founder, opened Pacific Acupuncture enter in with the goal of integrating traditional Chinese medicine into Western culture. “(I started doing acupuncture) after I had taken time off after studying biochemistry,” Chou said, reflecting on her post-graduate studies where she met Hsu. “I was uneasy about the long-term effects of all of these drugs, all of the pills; we just didn’t know the permanent impacts. We still don’t. These powerful, and addictive drugs have not been around long enough to know the long-term impacts on our health.”

For decades, traditional Chinese medicine has been largely recognized by needle acupuncture, where needle points of varying thicknesses, plugged into the skin, trigger nerves below the skin to open up damaged or blocked neurochemical and hormone passages.

Traditionally, Chinese acupuncturists believe that disease and pain is caused by a disruption of energy throughout the body, called qi. Recent fMRI studies, such as those conducted by the Neuroscience Research Institute, have validated this belief by tracing brain activity to stimulation of specific acupuncture points.

Chou and Hsu said the variety of traditional Chinese medicines reflect the variety of symptoms they can be utilized for, often assisting in preventing problems before they reach the necessity for Western invasive or synthetic medicines.

“Most of the time,” Hsu interjected. “We can help prevent symptoms like physical pain from reaching the levels where our patients need to come in (for treatment).”

According to su and hou, traditional Chinese medicine is a resource for those seeking relief from not only physical pain, but emotional and mental health barriers as well such as infertility, anxiety, stress, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression.

Hsu said the integration of traditional Chinese medicine into Western medicine is exactly that— an integration and not a switch.

“It isn’t a ‘this or that’ situation,” Hsu said. “Sometimes, Western medicine is appropriate, when something is structurally wrong within your body, you will need to go to the emergency room. We are looking to possibly lessen the frequencies of large-scale events, as best we can, before they get to traumatic levels.”

“We practice healthcare, not just ‘illness prevention,’” Chou said.

compounds and other harmful chemicals from the air, promoting better rest,” said Lee. The top air-improving plant is aloe vera. It’s easy to grow and maintain and emits oxygen at night. It’s also a great option for those looking for a low maintenance plant, as it requires minimum water and attention. In fact, the Egyptians nicknamed it the ‘plant of immortality’ because of its resilience.

The second top air-improving plant is the spider plant. NASA tests indicate this champion cleanser removes up to 90 percent of the cancer-causing chemical formaldehyde from the air.

Here are a few other plants that will help promote health in the home: Peace Lily: Its flowers give off humidity and suppress airborne microbes; however, keep it away from children and pets since it is highly toxic if consumed.

INNER PEACE Clear your mind from distraction, and more, through floating

BY DANIEL RITZ riginally used to test the effects of complete sensory deprivation in the 1950s, floating via modern float tanks is becoming a popular physical and mental health practice for South Orange County residents.

“Floating” is the act of floating in a pool, or pod, of body-temperature water and Epsom salts in a room of equal temperature. Epsom salt-infused water provides adequate floatation.

Once inside the pool, or pod, a user is met with a variety of options. Some users will choose to go the way of complete sensory deprivation by turning off the lights, soundproofing the pod and eliminating all external sensory input. This assists the user in achieving a completely internal experience, alone with their thoughts and without the possibility of external distraction. Many practitioners describe this as rapid encouragement to reaching a meditative state.

Justin Feinstein, director of the LIBR Float Clinic & Research Center, the principal investigator at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research and an assistant professor at the University of Tulsa, believes floating could be a shortcut for many people to reach a meditative state and reap some of its proven benefits.

“Floating gives me hope that a whole chunk of our population that normally would never be able to meditate could now achieve those sorts of deep meditative states,” Feinstein said.

Recent advances in neuroscience have allowed science to look inside the human brain during practices like meditation and see how brain activity changes. Research from fMRI studies done by Harvard Medical chool, affiliated with assachusetts General Hospital, show that meditating activates parts of the brain associated with attention and decreases activation in the amygdala.

Acceptance by the medical establishment of these demonstrations and their proven benefits have followed after studies supported by the National Institute of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, found links between meditation and reducing anxiety

and hostility, reducing stress and assisting in relationship development.

Others, commonly beginner “floaters” or those looking for the more physical benefits, choose to have a more sensory “isolation” experience as compared to deprivation.

BY DANIEL RITZ s practicing any one of the many varieties of yoga now available in South Orange County becomes an easily accessible option for physical, mental and spiritual wellness, both first-time and experienced yogis alike are faced with the choice of how to safely and effectively choose from a rapidly growing sea of new yoga instructors, and identify a teacher that is right for their desired experience.

The 2016 “Yoga in America” study, conducted by Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance, revealed the number of yoga practitioners in the United States increased to more than million in , up from . million in . percent of Americans say they are at least somewhat likely to practice yoga in the next months, or more than 80 million Americans, an ironic fact considering that percent of American practitioners have been practicing for less than five years.

That same study revealed that for every teacher, there were two people in teacher training. any yoga studios have opened yoga training courses, most South Orange County studios often charging more than , for base-level certification.

With so much chronic disease nowadays, we need to have strategies for staying as healthy as possible. Here are some workplace hacks that you can implement to make your work environment more conducive to optimal health.

Supplement with vitamin D One of the most important things you’re missing if you work inside is sunlight.

Without adequate sunlight everyday you won’t be able to make enough vitamin D to keep you healthy. itamin D deficiencies are extremely common and can result in increased back pain, more colds and flus, higher risk of diabetes and even cancer. If you aren’t able to spend 20-30 minutes per day in direct sunlight then you must get your vitamin D from food or from supplements. Good sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, butter from grass-fed cows, and egg yolks. The best source to supplement with is vitamin D3 at 1,000-3,000IU/day depending on your blood levels. Your vitamin D should be between 39-70 ng/ML. Move around Most Americans sit between 8-12 hours each day. That means that nearly half of one’s entire working years could be spent sitting down. When you sit too much you are more likely to experience back pain, to acquire hypertension and high cholesterol, to gain more belly fat, and to be at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. In fact, sitting has been called the new smoking because studies show a strong connection between the time you spend sitting and your risk of having a heart attack.

Cutting it Close Mobile barber looks to give back, start anew

S

tored in the back of a silver compact car were shearers, shaving cream, clippers and other essentials a barber would need.

Royce Kling, a San Clemente resident, wasn’t trying to take this equipment to a brick-and-mortar location. The car is his shop. His business card reads “Your Mobile Barber,” except Kling said he doesn’t take any money for haircuts and shaves, services he provides to members of the United States Marine Corps for free. He said he’s trying to do right by society after several brushes with the law.

Kling’s barber’s pole is fastened to the top of the car and was one of the few illuminations on a Sunday night near the corner of Avenida Granada and El Camino Real, where he typically sets up his pop-up shop. Working by dark, his girlfriend and her children assist Kling by holding up a light and other materials.

According to Orange County court records, dating back to 2008, Kling was arrested for breaking and entering, car theft, manufacturing illegal drugs, possession of such substances and other minor misdemeanors and low-level felonies. He said he has since gotten off parole and started a new life.

“I’ve cut hair for more than 12 years, mostly in prison,” Kling said. “This last time I got off parole, I had a goal to become a barber.”

His last sentence came in 2013 for a San Clemente Times April 26-May 2, 2018

controlled substance charge that was dismissed and he’s kept his record clean since then.

“This last sentence was pretty rough,” Kling said, adding most of his sentence was in segregated housing, or solitary confinement. “Somehow, some way I was able to get through that. I attribute everything to God, no matter how many mistakes I’ve made.”

Kling said he was working at a local barbershop until he decided to venture out on his own. He claims what he’s doing doesn’t violate any laws as he’s not charging for the cuts. The California state statute that governs barbering requires people to obtain a license if they perform such services, but it doesn’t define whether someone takes money or not as a contingency.

When asked if he is concerned about cutting the market for traditional barbershops, Kling said he doesn’t want to be a competitor, but he wants to be able to help those who don’t have the money for haircuts and shaves.

“A lot of my clientele doesn’t know that I’m out here, and when they do, I hope they come and find me,” Kling said. “None of us are perfect, and sometimes we let our fears override our common sense, and it makes things worse.”

Kling takes pride in his work, but it’s not his only craft. In addition to giving Marines free haircuts, Kling said he wants to provide services to homeless people who cannot afford to get a trim.

As giving free haircuts doesn’t make ends meet, Kling said he is trying to develop an auto detailing service within San Clemente.

“I’ve taken so much from this world and from people around me my whole life,” Kling said. “This is all about paying it forward.”

long the grassy hills at Parque Del Mar and the sandy shores of San Clemente, people helped clean up

the beaches and celebrated the pleasures of the planet during an Earth Day extravaganza on Saturday, April 21.

The city of San Clemente’s Environmental Division and the Watershed Task Force organize the event each year, which includes educational information about “how everyone can make a difference in reducing litter, and pollutants which end up in our streets, storm drains, and eventually our beaches and ocean,” according to a press release from the city of San Clemente.

Live music was performed by the band Gratitude, children’s activities were available and many vendors with Earth-related wares and education were out and about.

“We moved to San Clemente in 2001, and we knew we wanted to start a business,” Patti said, “but we didn’t know what.

It popped into my mind, I don’t know how or why, but I noticed that there weren’t any art supply stores in the area.”

The couple returned to Texas and contacted the artist of the work that was featured on the front of a Chamber of Commerce directory.

It was Rick Delanty, a well-known local artist.

Patti said she reached out to Delanty for some advice, and she received four pages of emails providing such direction.

She then spoke with other artists who helped her along the way.

“My friend told me to read everything I could, hire people who know more than I do and join National Art Materials Trade Association (NAMTA),” Patti said.

Heather Rapozo, the art program director and marketing director of San Clemente Art Supply, was hired shortly after the business opened and is still with them.

“We just grew organically by people coming in and telling us what they like,” Patti said.

Classes at San Clemente Art Supply started with Saddleback College students coming to learn more about painting and drawing.

Today, the business hosts artists to teach courses—some of whom are worldrenowned.

Some art shows have been hosted in the business’ gallery as well as the parking lot. Local street artist “Bandit” hosted an exhibition there with stencil art a few years ago.

Patti admitted she’s not an expert on art, but she’s always enjoyed dabbling in different areas of painting and drawing.

Most of what the art supply store sells are materials for painting and drawing, but accessories and items for children are also for sale.

“We really want to help people get to the next level of their artwork, no matter where they’re at,” Patti said.

On Saturday, April 28, San Clemente Art Supply will host a celebration sidewalk sale at the business from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Representatives from Caran D’Ache, Faber Castell, Ampersand, Liquitex and more who will host demonstrations. Some San Clemente Times April 26-May 2, 2018

events will be make-and-take projects and will be encouraging people of all ages to paint river rocks to leave as decoration in the garden area. There will be treats and refreshments.

The building San Clemente Art Supply is located in was built in 1928 and has been used as various businesses. It is listed on the San Clemente registry of historic sites.

“Before I got into the mortgage business, I ran and founded a couple brands in San Clemente,” Beach said.

He helped launch Electric Sunglasses in 2000, which is based in San Clemente and was sold to Volcom in 2008. He also worked with Peligroso Tequila.

Now Beach is helping people get home loans.

“I took a couple years off and spent some time surfing with my 16-year-old, and I met the founder of this branch on a trip to Cabo San Lucas,” Beach said.

Beach said he used his networking through surfing in San Clemente and other businesses to build his reputation as a loan officer.

They work with about 30 different banks that facilitate home loans.

“With markets changing and interest rates edging up, there’s always a lot of change and you have to stay on top of it,” Beach said.

Most of the homes Beach said he helps receive loans for are based in San Clemente.

Walk Talk after taking a look at traditional therapy and wanting to enhance her client’s experience. Basically, Igelman takes clients on walks outdoors and speaks with them to help them through their session.

“The idea behind the practice is to get people out of the therapy office and into nature because being at the beach and around forests and trees and just in general in the sunshine is actually really healthy for you and has a positive impact on depression and anxiety,” Igelman said.

Igelman said that being outside triggers positive neurotransmitters in the brain that help people feel better and more comfortable.

The initial intake appointment is done in the office before going out to a private or group outdoor therapy session. Igelman said she wants her clients to know the benefits of what she provides and for her clients to disclose anything before going on a beach walk and talk.

Friend of 30 Years Ties the Knot in Greek Wedding

I

n the summer of 1988 while surfing at Doheny State Beach, I met a guy named Alex Rentziperis.

Between waves as we chatted, I asked, “What kind of work do you do?”

Alex said, “I’m a barber. And, in a few months, I’m going to open my own barbershop not too far from here in Dana Point.

How about you?”

I said, “I’m going to open my own deli, also not too far from here in Dana Point.”

That was the start of a friendship that has lasted for 30 years. Later that year, Alex opened the Sports Barber at the corner of Del Prado and Golden Lantern, above where StillWater Spirits & Sounds restaurant is now located.

In December 1988, I opened Tutor and Spunky’s Deli on Pacific Coast Highway, next to the Dana Point Donut Shop across from Rubens Imports.

Since 1988, we’ve done a lot together.

Most notably, after my divorce in 1994 and after putting up with some unsavory roommates, I finally was going to get to live alone in my Monarch Beach home. That was before the phone rang.

It was Alex calling from ON LIFE AND his San Juan Capistrano LOVE AFTER 50 home.

Got a spare bedroom for a short time?”

So, Alex moved in. Turned out to last for about a year. He often repeated vehemently that he would never marry again.

We took many camping trips to the Sierras together. I can still picture him standing on a huge rock, trying to master fly-fishing, casting into the icy waters of Lake Mary. He got a little too far forward on one cast and did a belly flop right into the lake. I told him he’d never make the Olympic team as a diver.

Alex’s passion is ocean fishing. He has a boat and is out on the water once or twice a week. He taught me how to catch sea bass near the kelp beds. He’s featured on the cover of Western Outdoor News, the largest weekly fishing and hunting magazine in the country.

Four years ago, Alex attended an age 55plus singles meet-and-greet event at Tutor and Spunky’s Deli. Alex’s sister, Faye Dalton, encouraged a recently divorced client of hers named Carolyn Young to attend the same event to meet her brother. I remember that night. Carolyn and Alex seemed enamored with each other. They’ve been a couple ever since.

Carolyn were married in the backyard of Faye and Doug Dalton’s San Clemente home. Mark Rentziperis, Alex’s brother, was the best man.

Christine DiGiacomo, a San Clemente resident, whose business card reads, “Pastor Woman…for such a time as this,” (www. pastorwoman.com), married Alex and Carolyn. Christine and Carolyn have known each other for years. I heard many of the guests compliment Christine on the beautiful, unique ceremony she performed.

My partner Greta said, “This is the finest wedding I’ve ever attended.”

To conclude the ceremony, Pastor DiGiacomo added an unusual touch: Instead of the traditional “You may kiss the bride,” she turned to Carolyn and said, “You may kiss your new husband.” Very cool.

Alex still owns and works at the Sports Barber. Carolyn works at a local bank.

They live in Dana Point. Good to see an age 55-plus wedding so hip and fun.

Goes to show. Even though you’re over age 55, you never know when or where love might come along; it might even happen at a singles function at your local deli.

Where will the former San Clemente Triton and top prospect land in the NFL Draft?

New York Jets The Jets slide in at No. 3, and one way or another, they are drafting a quarterback. Whichever QB the Jets deem as the top available on their board, they will select him third overall. Jets fans had already pegged their team as getting the No. 1 overall pick before last season and bought their green No. 14 Darnold jerseys. However after a surprisingly strong start and the Browns’ implosion, they settled at the third pick. If Darnold is still available here, he will most likely be a New York Jet. If the Jets fancy themselves closer to contention with their defense, maybe they pick Rosen as the NFL-ready pocket passer.

T

he day has finally come for San Clemente alum Sam Darnold.

The first round of the NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 26 at 5 p.m., and the former USC quarterback (QB) figures to be among the top picks at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Darnold has been described as the complete package at quarterback.

He has durable size at 6-foot-3, 221 pounds but also has mobility to extend the play or pick up yards with his legs.

Darnold also has shown his arm strength and an innate ability to make plays. He has that undescribed “it” factor.

Darnold is rated as the top quarterback

by ESPN and Mike Mayock of NFL.com and the No. 4 and No. 7 overall prospect by each, respectively.

However, it is a tight race for that top quarterback spot and the No. 1 overall pick, and despite seemingly cementing himself as the top pick after a stellar pro day at the end of March, chatter has risen in recent days that Darnold could slip a couple spots.

Let’s look at Darnold’s possible destinations at the top of the NFL Draft: Cleveland Browns The Browns hold the No. 1 and No. 4

Pettis Pegged as MidRound Pick

an Clemente native and JSerra alum Dante Pettis is projected as a second- or third-day pick in this week’s NFL Draft.

The former Washington receiver figures to be selected in the third round on Friday, April 27 or Saturday, April 28.

picks, and coming off of a 0-16 season, they have plenty of holes to fill. A franchise quarterback is a must for any team looking to succeed in the NFL, but the Browns have seemed split on who that franchise QB should be. Darnold was the early favorite, and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam liked what he saw in person at Darnold’s pro day. However, Wyoming’s Josh Allen may have risen to the top of their rankings. Allen, 6-foot-5, 237 pounds, is a raw talent and a ton of arm strength.

He’s done well to position himself throughout the draft process, and the Browns may not want to overlook a smallschool quarterback like they reportedly did with the Eagles’ Carson Wentz, then of North Dakota. It’s also been rumored that

Pettis is also a versatile talent that could find himself on an NFL roster in other ways.

Pettis made his mark in college as a punt returner with nine punt-return touchdowns to set the career NCAA record. Pettis also tied the NCAA record for consecutive games with a punt-return touchdown after scoring in the first three games of the 2017 season.

Dante won’t be the first in his family to get a shot in professional sports or in the NFL. Dante’s father, Gary Pettis played major league baseball, and his cousin, Austin Pettis, played in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers.

the Browns have had eyes on No. 1 overall prospect Saquon Barkley, a running back from Penn State. With two top-four picks and plenty of available talent, the Browns have plenty of opportunity to fix their franchise, but these are also the Cleveland Browns, who have shown an inability to fix their franchise.

New York Giants The Giants come in with the No. 2 pick and have plenty of directions to go in.

They still have their starting quarterback with two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning, but after a disappointing 2017, are the Giants looking to groom a replacement? Should the Browns pass on Darnold at No. 1, Darnold and University of Califor-

Denver Broncos or Other The Broncos sit at No. 5 and could use a quarterback of the future. Denver paid a decent sum of money to Case Keenum in free agency, but the Broncos have had a bit of a carousel at QB since Peyton Manning’s retirement. This is where trades could come in, especially if Darnold is still somehow on the board. The Broncos could be happy with Keenum and trade this pick for more selections or other talent. Teams like the Buffalo Bills could make the move up to grab Darnold. He really shouldn’t fall past this spot, but if he does, Darnold could take a tumble as the next several teams look set at QB, or, again, it will be a situation ripe for a team trade up.

Art of the 30-Minute Session How to maximize limited water time when surfing locally

S

essions at Trestles are kind of a treat. Even if you have a deluxe e-bike, there’s no “quick dip” at Uppers or Lowers. Getting down to the cobblestone takes an investment in time and energy (albeit a good investment).

“I surfed for three hours this morning,” a friend of mine told me the other day. “It was pretty good.”

Good. Good for him. With a kid in elementary school, a steady stream of work deadlines and all the other wildcards that come with being a semi-functional adult, three-hour sessions aren’t always that easy to lock in. Sometimes all I have is 30 minutes at lunch to break out and get wet.

Sneaking in a short session is definitely better than no session at all. In such cases, refining the art of a quick paddleout is essential.

It starts with a plan. Know exactly where you’re going to surf, what you’re going to ride and how much time it all entails. Check the tides, buoys and webcams

before you get on the road to ensure success. The Surfline app is helpful for all of this (just don’t get in an accident checking the cams while you’re driving).

You’re also going to want to have your gear situation “on lock.” This means boards and a wetsuit should be organized in the car, fins in boards, leashes at the ready, and don’t forget leash strings, wax and sunscreen. Click-and-go fin designs like the FCS 2 series make getting the right fins in your board a literal snap—no fin screws needed.

You’re also going to have to have the ins and outs of getting to your spot dialed in.

As noted above, no Trestles session takes only 30 minutes, so you’re going to be

looking for alternatives closer to the sand.

The San Clemente beach breaks are ideal for this, as is Salt Creek and even San O. (Just be ready to run up and down the hill at Creek, and forget San O if the summertime line of cars is flaring).

When you get to your spot, park as close to the water as humanly possible. That doesn’t mean circle the block 10 times waiting for a parking place to open up, but be efficient. Park, suit up and go. Traffic is your enemy. Cutting down on wasted time translates into more time in the water, which means more waves.

With your vehicle in park, it’s go time.

rayden Burch is rolling! The 13-yearold San Clemente ripper has posted wins in the 14-and-under division of the last two Western Surfing Association (WSA) contests, and at present, he is leading the ratings in the WSA and Scholastic Surf Series (SSS).

A seventh-grader at Shorecliffs Middle School, he’s the prototypical San Clemente grom with big dreams and larger-than-life heroes.

“I mostly look up to guys in town like brother (Kolohe Andino) and Griffin (Colapinto). Oh, and Jordy (Smith) because he does the biggest turns,” Burch said.

your session in trunks or a spring suit; all the better. It takes precious time to yank wetsuits on and off. You’re only going to be in the water for 30 minutes max, suck it up (Maybe don’t try that just yet as local waters are still hovering in the upper 50s).

When time is of the essence, wear a watch. Marriages have been ruined and jobs have been lost when surfers lose track of time. Any waterproof watch will work, but the Rip Curl Search GPS Watch is handy because you can literally document every move you make during your session, and then when you’re back at work later, you can analyze the data and see how you did.

As far as your actual strategy when you hit the water, get busy right away. Pick off a small insider to get the rhythm going.

If you paddle out and sit for 10 minutes, a third of your session is already over. Keep moving the whole time. Think of it as “sprint surfing.” This doesn’t mean annoy everyone around you, but take advantage of opportunities you might ignore if you were going to stay out longer. Getting the wave count up is key.

Also, try and pick off at least two or three waves that you can be satisfied with.

Sometimes all it takes is one. Don’t get so distracted by trying to catch everything around you that you put yourself out of position for the good ones. Like everything in surfing, it’s a balancing act.

After the clock runs out, hustle back to the car, bust out your rinse to get the sand and salt off before you jump back into your civilian clothes. Nobody will be the wiser that you just took a shower in the parking lot. Reload your gear and get on your way, your perfect 30-minute session is a success. SC

“Or maybe traveling around surfing some of the best waves on earth will work too.”
