Five things San Clemente should know this week Democratic Congressional Candidates Weigh in on SONGS Issues During Debate THE LATEST: The five Democratic candidates running for the 49th congressional district gathered on Feb. 20 at San Juan Hills High School in San Juan Capistrano for a debate that included topics ranging from The Tolls Roads to the investigations on President Donald Trump.

But a key topic candidates will have to contend with as they get closer to the California Democratic convention on Saturday and into the primary race is how to move—not necessarily what to do— with the spent nuclear fuel at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

With the retirement of Rep. Darrell Issa this year, the Democratic candidates are hoping to flip the 49th district, which runs from San Juan Capistrano to Solana Beach, from Republican to Democrat. The Democratic candidates are: Doug Applegate, a San Clemente-based civil rights attorney and retired Marine colonel; Sara Jacobs, who is based in San Diego County and has worked with the U.S. State Department; Mike Levin, a San Juan Capistrano-based attorney who focuses on environmental issues and government affairs; Paul Kerr, a Navy veteran and small business owner in San Diego County; and Christina Prejean, an Air Force veteran and attorney who represents veterans and sexual assault victims.

The moderator of the debate was Christine Mai-Duc, a political reporter for the Los Angeles Times.

SONGS operators started storing the remainder of its spent nuclear fuel rods onsite, which is right next to the Pacific Ocean, a move that has drawn ire from every corner of Orange and San Diego counties. But the waste can’t be moved until the Department of Energy finds a location for it or legislation is changed to allow for temporary storage.

When candidates were asked if they support the Trump administration’s plan to divert $120 million to find a nuclear waste storage facility and to reexamine Yucca Mountain until permanent storage is found, all of the candidates said they would support removing the fuel from SONGS campus, but they had varying San Clemente Times February 22-28, 2018

answers as to what to do with the radioactive material.

Jacobs of Del Mar opened the answers by elevating SONGS to the most immediate issue needing to be addressed in the 49th.

“If something happens at San Onofre, it’s not only going to affect our favorite beaches and surfing spots; it’s going to affect the economy of the entire state of California and this country,” Jacobs said. “I do not think President Trump’s proposal to reopen Yucca Mountain is going to work.

It is universally hated by Nevadans, and as the state becomes more and more purple (politically), there will never be political will to reopen it.”

Jacbos said she would like to revisit the community consent-based approach to storing spent nuclear waste, giving more local voice to the areas that could harbor it and other areas of the Southwestern United States.

Paul Kerr, a democrat from Oceanside, said the topic needs short- and long-term solutions.

“The long-term issue is we’ve got to find a repository for these fuel rods,” Kerr said, which he followed up with asking the audience if they would want spent nuclear fuel rods in their backyards by a show of hands. One person raised. “Short-term, they’re putting these rods in canisters... that have manufacturing warnings that are 20 years when, right now, there are manufacture warnings (on) canisters that will give us at least 65 years.”

Levin said attacking the issue with both a legislative move for permanent storage and temporary holding would be the best path to take.

“There’s absolutely no way that we can keep the spent fuel rods there; you couldn’t devise a worse place for this amount of nuclear material,” Levin said.

“What we really need is a Nuclear Regulatory Commission waiver so that we can move the waste.”

Applegate took a hardline stance on the issue and also disagreed with moving the nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain.

“The Department of Energy moves it.

That’s the only federal department that moves nuclear energy,” Applegate said.

“It needs to get off the beach. There’s a problem with Yucca Mountain. You’re going to ruin, permanently, the groundwater of Nevada. It’s not feasible. It needs to get into less populated areas.”

Prejean, who grew up between Vista and Oceanside, took a different approach than her counterparts, saying she would like a balance between which communities eventually accept the spent fuel.

“Our country definitely needs to find a long-term solution to figure out where we’re going to put these rods,” Prejean said. “I think that it’s also important to have someone in Congress who ensures that these rods are not buried in just the poorest neighborhoods.”

In addition to more hyperlocal issues, the candidates also discussed topics that affect the nation as a whole, including gun reform. All of the five candidates said that they were in favor of some form of gun regulation.

Jacobs said that assault weapons and bump stocks should be banned, and that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should be able to conduct a study on gun violence in the nation. Citing the

recent shooting at Marjory High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead, Jacobs said that the younger generations will make gun regulations happen.

“This insanity has to stop,” Kerr added, after noting he is a gun owner and believes in the Second Amendment.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Democratic candidates must receive 60 percent of the caucus vote for approval at their party’s state convention on Saturday, Feb. 24 in San Diego in order to be considered for endorsement by the California Democrats.

The Republican candidates are Rocky Chavez, a state assemblyman; Kristin Gaspar, a San Diego County supervisor; Diane Harkey, a former state assemblywoman who is currently on the California Board of Equalization; Brian Maryott, San Juan Capistrano’s mayor pro tem; Craig Nordal, a real estate appraiser from Encinitas; and Joshua Schoonover, an engineer and attorney from San Marcos.

Joshua Hancock is running on the Libertarian ticket, and Jordan Mills is running for the Peace and Freedom Party.

EYE ON SC (Cont. from page 3) scheduled for March. The project, which has been going on since 2014, added an HOV lane to each side of I-5 through South County and extended the freeway to allow for more traffic flow.

During the Feb. 12 Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) meeting, the OCTA Long Range Transportation Plan first draft was submitted to the OCTA board of directors, Donchak said, adding this plan also is vetted with San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).

Some of the projects have funding attached to them and others are potential projects.

Donchak said the 241 Toll Road extension south did not end up on either of the proposed or funded plans, something the city of San Clemente has battled for more than two years.

Donchak said the plans for San Diego County’s extension of I-5 as well as adding HOV lanes by 2040 has a price tag of about $237 million. This is something San Clemente will have to consider in the future, as the project ends right at the Orange County border.

WHAT’S NEXT: During the meeting, the board called for a circulation project funding of $12 million, which the city intends to apply for funding to enhance the existing trolley program.

“Of the 15 current projects countywide, the San Clement trolley had 46 (passengers) per vehicle per hour; the next closest program is Laguna Beach at 36,” Donchak said.

The day of the ribbon cutting for the I-5 project is to be determined. —EH

OCSD: Teen Dies after Being Struck by Driver Who Lost Control of Car; No Arrests Yet THE LATEST: A pedestrian, who was a minor, was killed and another was injured after another minor lost control of a vehicle while driving in San Clemente on Feb. 18, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD). All people involved are minors.

The incident occurred at 9 p.m. on the 3000 block of Eminencia Del Sur in San Clemente, when the minor driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and struck a parked truck and two pedestrians that were near the parked vehicle.

Two people were transported to the hospital. One of which had minor injuries and the other died at the hospital.

The driver was not injured and remained at the scene, OCSD stated.

WHAT’S NEXT: OCSD stated it does not appear the driver was under the influence of any substances, and he was not arrested at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, San Clemente Times February 22-28, 2018

and any findings will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office to determine if charges will be filed. Because all of the people involved were all under 18, no names were released at this time.

Lt. Mike Peters, chief of San Clemente Police Services, said he believed all people involved were students of San Clemente High School.

End-of-the-Year Jazz Concert Could Come to North Beach THE LATEST: A group of students from San Clemente High School’s jazz music classes came to City Council on Tuesday with concerns that their end-of-the-year concert at the Pier had been canceled.

The plans the city has for the concert call not to cancel the concert, but to reorganize it and reintegrate it into North Beach.

Assistant City Manager Erik Sund said the idea is to have an ensemble at the Market at North Beach during the months it is open and to have quartets or smaller performances throughout the market—sort of a jazz infusion throughout the market.

Each year, San Clemente High School and Shorecliffs Middle School students come together to perform a final concert.

For some students, it’s their last chance to play together before graduating. The concert has taken place for at least 18 years, according to the students.

WHAT’S NEXT: Plans for the concert, which takes place at the end of the year, should become clear in the next month or so as the city works with the jazz students.

Cold Weather Expected to Continue through February THE LATEST: Frigid—yes, frigid—temperatures have come to South Orange County, with lows as cold as 37 degrees on some nights, according to the National Weather Service.

Frost advisories have been issued in the early morning since at least Feb. 18, which can damage plants if not properly cared for, and cause health issues in people with weaker immune systems.

WHAT’S NEXT: On its main website, the National Weather Service in San Diego stated, “A dip in the Jet Stream along the West Coast is forecasted to bring cooler than average weather over the next two weeks. Self-awareness and mindfulness can help students manage their increasing academic demands, stay calm in the face of frustrating social media posts, enhance concentration and often improve relationships with their friends and family.

Sixth- and eighth-grade students will learn how to easily incorporate mindfulness strategies into their day, how to cultivate self-compassion and quiet the inner critic, tips to improve concentration and regulate emotions, tools to balance academic stress and anxiety, combat test anxiety and perform better in school.

SCHS Dance Team Offers Teen Skills and Evaluation Clinic In preparation for spring tryouts, the San Clemente High School Dance Team is offering a teen skills and evaluation clinic for middle school and high school dancers on Tuesday, March 6, from 4-6:30 p.m. in the San Clemente High School Dance Room, located at 700 Avenida Pico.

The clinic is designed to give dancers interested in trying out for the 2018-2019 team the opportunity to practice with the current team. During the clinic, attendees will participate in warm-ups as well as learn lyrical/contemporary and hip hop combinations. Coaches will be observing the dancers and providing a written evaluation in the mail after the clinic, highlighting strengths and offering suggestions for areas to improve before the team’s try outs scheduled for April 10-13.

EYE ON SC other cities, but when he did San Clemente, he was 50 years old and wanted to do something, I think, that would last,” Culbertson said. “He envisioned white walls, red tiled roofs and somewhere people would live in peace and happiness.”

Culbertson said when people bought deeds to their land, Hanson had already worked out the master development of the Pier, miles of trails and other amenities of the town.

From then on, people continued to buy property in the town that was designed with the contour of the land, in order to keep views and open space as unrestricted as possible.

San Clemente to celebrate its 90th anniversary on Saturday

all it fate or optimal planning, Ole Hanson rolled into what would become San Clemente 90 years ago with the idea to create his own utopia.

On Saturday, Feb. 24, San Clemente is going all out with a celebration of the city’s 90th birthday, celebrating the old with the new.

Pulling pieces of the city’s history from a storage container, which houses all of the San Clemente Historical Society’s documents, board members Larry Culbertson, Raad Ghantous and board sectary and archivist Mary Ann Comes explained how San Clemente came to be.

“Ole would advertise land tracts in newspapers in San Diego and Los Angeles, and people would come down and get a chicken dinner and the sales pitch they could mark off lots if they wanted and put down their deposit,” Culbertson said.

“When Ole Hanson drove through here in the 1900s, nothing existed between San Juan Capistrano and Oceanside. He cooked up this dream that he wanted to have a ‘Spanish Village by the Sea,’ and unlike so many other developers, he wanted to have a clean slate.”

Pope St. Clement was the inspiration for the town’s namesake, which was dubbed

by Sebastián Vizcaíno of Spain.

“According to the family, there is a place in Spain that (Hanson) kind of liked, but from a developer’s perspective, the Panama-California Exposition in 1915 established Spanish colonial revival (SCR) architecture as a very viable brand to California…that would be easy to build and was unique to the southwest.”

Hamilton “H.H.” Cotton was a primary financier of the land deeds, which had been exchanged several times before Hanson started selling the idea of development to investors.

“The interesting thing about Hamilton Cotton that doesn’t get covered a lot is that Cotton was actually married to a lady by the name of Victoria. Victoria’s father is Carson of the city of Carson,” Ghantous said. “Her grandfather is one of the original landholders from the Spanish crown. So Hamilton Cotton was connected through his wife. It’s interesting how this ties into everything.”

Gardens, which was once Hanson’s house, there are items from China and Spain and other places he had traveled. Much of the SCR architecture still exists in San Clemente today, and there are areas of the city that are zoned for residential and commercial SCR architecture only.

“He had done other developments in

Spirit of San Clemente Day San Clemente Day will take place every last Saturday in February, after the San Clemente City Council established the day in 2017.

Mayor Tim Brown said because San Clemente is such a special place to him, he said the day will celebrate all of the aspects of the city. The celebration is in its infancy, but will continue to grow and honor the history of the city.

“We’re probably going on our fifth generation, in terms of people born and raised here who now have kids of their own,” Brown said. “I think it’s a wonderful place for families, and San Clemente Day is about all of the things we love about San Clemente and to recognize the people who founded it and built it. It’s a great day to take a pause and learn a little bit more about our beginnings because I think it will help us moving forward in the future.”

Brown said the history of San Clemente has shaped the town for the future through Ole Hanson’s development.

“I’ve become more appreciative of how the history of San Clemente has guided the way things are,” Brown said. “It really is just understanding a lot of our DNA as a city. The way we’ve grown has become very clear, and I think people get that— why we’ve kept our small-town charm and how we’ve been able to still have that look and that feel of what we really love about San Clemente.”

Brown is actually a transplant to San Clemente, but took root to the city when he married his wife.

“What doesn’t change is the reason why people come here. Even if they come here and are motivated to do different things, they’re drawn here because of its essential charm,” Brown said. “It’s a sleepy beachside community, and in state that’s growing as much as California, that’s hard to find.” SC Editor’s note: All photos in this story are the property of the San Clemente Historical Society, used with permission. Celebrating 90 Years of San Clemente, with Emphasis on History

T

he year 2018 is special for San Clemente as it celebrates the city’s 90th year since Ole Hanson’s founding.

Little did I know when I lived here during its 36th year in 1963 and 1964 while stationed at Camp Pendleton that I would be living here for its’ 90th year. Clearly in those earlier years, San Clemente was still in its “youth.”

I’ve written much about San Clemente in the past. This city was and remains a special place. One of my most memorable thoughts, since I returned here in 2001, has been the wonderful opportunity to be involved with local governance.

This started in 2003 when I was the first homeowner to serve on the Talega HOA Board of Directors. I was appointed by the developer, Standard Pacific, and was elected to the board some years later when elections began. I served the next 12 years until 2014. The best memories of this were being a part of the development and growth of one of San Clemente’s largest communities. I began to understand local governments.

My instrumental education came in 2004 and 2005, while I served on the Orange County Grand Jury and observed and studied local governments throughout the county, including the county govern-

South Orange County and particularly, San Clemente (SC), unite! Be heard! It has become abundantly apparent that some outside communities expect San Clemente to sacrifice itself for the benefit of others and for what others create—whether accepting a devastating toll road being built on top of our schools, homes or open space, or burying nuclear waste in our community. We are Not In My Back Yards (NIMBYs) if we do not do so.

At the Feb. 8 Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) Joint Board meeting, some elected officials and agency representatives spent a great deal of time and public taxpayer funds to imply, and even admonish, so-called illegal activity by our

ment. This led to my appointment to the San Clemente Planning Commission in 2005, where I was privileged to serve for the next eight years until 2013.

Over the years since 2005 I have personally known 13 elected members of our City Council and actually worked with many until 2013. I view our local government and elected officials as “custodians” of our historic San Clemente and responsible to continue its unique existence well beyond 90 years and endlessly into the future. By Lew Avera facilities, I view five as the leading examples to protect: Ole Hanson Beach Club, Casa Romantica, The Casino, Miramar Theater and historic City Hall.

Not all of them are not government owned, but their historical dominance is subject to government control, and our leaders have done a superb job over the years in maintaining this perspective.

The San Clemente Historical Society has and continues to play a distinctive role in maintaining the historical elegance of the city. There has even been some

recent interest in designating several government-defined historic districts.

These can accomplish a wonderful focus on the 90 years of our existence; however, they could have some possibly undesirable restrictions on land use, which still needs to be worked out if this proceeds. Several other cities in Orange County have such districts and they are powerful in terms of preserving our historic past.

In summary, after 90 years, San Clemente continues to be a very special and unique community in one of the most powerful and forward-looking counties in the United States. Ole Hanson set the stage and has not been forgotten. What he did to make San Clemente so special is still a major part of life for all who reside here in its’ 90th year. Happy 90th birthday, San Clemente, with an endless year ahead.

elected SC officials solely because our San Clemente City Council is trying to protect our rights as citizens, be informed of their constituents’ values and ensure that they are represented at the table.

At the TCA board meeting, the TCA’s high-paid strategist put together a presentation in which the PR firm admitted to secretly monitoring private citizens’ Facebook accounts in order to monitor opposition to The Toll Roads. This is a perfect example of why citizens today do not trust government—intimidation by big money and power.

The First Amendment was enacted because our forefathers recognized that our democracy requires the ability of our citizenry to employ advocacy and grassroots movements (“free speech”) as key ingredients in affecting system change.

San Clemente was established by those leaving behind urbanization because they placed value on history, open space, nature and thoughtful balanced development. It is the reason a Presidential Library was rejected from being built on top of one of the last remaining coastal plains on the West Coast.

To government officials who don’t understand these values shared by San Clementeans and many South Orange County citizens who want to come visit the splendors of our community, our voices should not be trampled for the sake of others; this should not be easy, rapid or without controversy. Our challenge to you is to let our voices be heard. As elected officials, you have a responsibility and are mandated to be transparent—to ensure the rights of the few as well as the many that have been considered and valued.

Whistle While You Work: What Is a Labor of Love?

W

ork is what we have to do, and leisure is the stuff no one requires of us—no matter what kind of effort is involved. Anyone who has been tortured by the time and exertion necessary to achieve a solid 70 handicap on the links knows a good golf game takes more effort than most work at the office.

And yet, we will slog through the rain on 18 links, paddle against massive closeouts in the surf and run 6 kilometers in the scorching heat and consider it a pleasure as opposed to making a phone call in an air-conditioned office to someone we don’t want to speak to, and bear the inevitable stress of the interaction.

Work is often made unpleasant by the person we call our immediate supervisor—at least that’s what we think makes it unpleasant. Bosses always mistake our attentiveness to them at work for being admiring of their talent—when actually we are just trying to keep our job.

Women have the hardest time in the workplace. More than one woman has told me they feel like they have to think like a man, act like a lady, look like a young girl and work like a dog. This is the most pervasive aspect of working in America today. If you want to know what the term “institutional racism” or “institutional sexism” looks like, look no further than the hundreds of women from all walks of life and all types of industries who have come forward in the last year to give witness to how they are treated differently because of their gender. That mercifully seems to be changing rapidly and it couldn’t happen fast enough in a world like ours.

And like their male counterparts, the breadwinning spouse puts up with a lot of inexcusable behavior because we need to San Clemente Times February 22-28, 2018

cover the mortgage, the kids’ doctor bills and the car payment even though the way we achieve those necessities seems pointless or even absurd.

Which brings us to the point here: work is considered work because it is not our choice— where play (no matter how frustrating, difficult or downright dangerous) is something we choose to do. So perhaps when they say “do what you love” there is some unrealized connection there, as we tend to do much better at our play (which we love) than we do with our work (which we don’t). What I do know is there is truth to the old saying that nobody ever expressed their dying regrets to be, “I wish I had spent more time at the office.” And of course, WAVELENGTHS

By Jim Kempton there is another important axiom to remember when feeling guilty about all the stuff you feel you should be doing versus all the time you spend just doing what you want, which is often not a dang thing: Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.

And remember, even after working hard, kicking butt, struggling to constantly win, we still get old and die. The winner of the rat race is still a rat.

SATURDAY, FEB. 24: CITY LIFEGUARD TRYOUTS 7 a.m. The city of San Clemente’s Marine Safety Division will host tryouts for seasonal ocean lifeguard and lifeguard trainee positions on Saturday, Feb. 24 the Marine Safety Division Headquarters, located on the beach north of the Pier. Check-in for tryouts is at 7 a.m. and applicants will compete in an approximate 800-yard ocean swim in 13 and a half minutes or less. Successful candidates will then compete in a 1,200-yard run-swim-run.

The use of wetsuits, goggles, fins, or other swimming aids are not permitted. The top candidates from the physical tests will be invited to an interview, which will be held on the same day as the physical events. The top candidates from the interview process will be invited to participate in a mandatory 92-hour training program. To be eligible, candidates must be at least 16 years old with a valid work permit by June 30, 2018 and must be available for all 92 hours of training. At the Movies: Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ Saves Studio’s Day

y now, it’s pretty obvious that Marvel movies are fool-proof, no matter how underwhelming or barely decent the quality of the blockbuster might be. The mega franchise celebrates its 10th anniversary this year since 2008’s Iron Man, and even when critical disappointments like Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor: The Dark World (2013) or Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) occur, they still do well financially. But the current Marvel release, Black Panther, is one of the more original superhero films to come out in terms of direction.

Days after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), Prince T’Challa of Wakanda (Chadwick Boseman) is still mourning the death of his father, King T’Chaka (John Kani). At the same time, a new villain, Erik Stevens (Michael B.

Jordan) is on Earth ready to overthrow the Wakanda government in revenge for the murder of his own father by T’Chaka.

T’Challa’s former flame and Wakanda spy Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and his precocious, tech-savvy little sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) work alongside T’Challa to better Wakanda as a nation. Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya and Angela Bassett co-star.

Black Panther is directed and co-written by Ryan Coogler of Fruitvale Station (2013) and Creed (2015) fame, and this is another success in his rise from indie cred to studio filmmaker. Much like the Guardians of the Galaxy flicks, Panther’s atmosphere and environment aren’t as typically comic-book style as you would think with something like Spider-Man or Batman. Romance at the Bargain Box Thrift Shop in San Clemente

T

he Bargain Box Thrift Shop, located at 526 N. El Camino Real in San Clemente, is a wonderful place. It’s run by volunteers from the Assistance League of Capistrano Valley. All proceeds from sales there are put back into the local community.

The funds are used to provide new school clothing to families who need assistance in the Capistrano Unified School District. Also funded are new school clothing and toddler clothing giveaways at Camp Pendleton.

The Thrift Shop is the main source of income for the Assistance League of Capistrano Valley philanthropies.

Working at the thrift shop, volunteers Nancy Cormier and Donna O’Donnell meet a lot of ON LIFE AND interesting people. They LOVE AFTER 50 said they had no idea that

That’s when a couple named Craig and Ilda Kendall came in to their thrift shop to do some serious shopping. Craig told Nancy and Donna, “The Bargain Box Thrift Shop has special meaning to us.

That’s why we stop here whenever we are near San Clemente.”

The two women were curious, particularly because Craig and Ilda said they live in Calimesa, near Big Bear Lake, not exactly in the South County area. The women wanted to know more about this attractive couple.

Craig said, “Your thrift store was the perfect place for me to propose to Ilda.

You see, we both love antiques, nice clothes and jewelry. Our families both spent time on the beach in San Clemente when we were kids. We are amazed that San Clemente has retained its friendly, beach-town atmosphere.

“In 2010, when Ilda and I were here, it just hit me, and I asked her to marry me right in the shop.”

“Eight years ago?” Donna asked, thinking Craig and Ilda probably married shortly after that.

Ilda said, “To celebrate our wedding, and to ‘pay it forward’ to others less fortunate than us, we stopped here today. As always, when here, the volunteers are so friendly and kind. It is obvious you love working here.”

“So, when did you tie the knot?” Donna asked.

“Three weeks ago,” Ilda replied.

Donna and Nancy were dumbfounded.

They looked at each other and said this is a story for Tom Blake’s On Life and Love after 50 column in the newspaper.

Craig gave Donna and Nancy their email address and telephone number, and then Nancy took a photo of them as they left the Thrift Shop.

The two women sent me an email. My challenge was to contact Craig and Ilda, to gather a little more information. Because my partner Greta and I were going to Palm Springs on Valentine’s Day for a week, time was of the essence.

As Greta and I were driving on Palm Canyon Drive into Palm Springs, my cell phone rang. It was Craig and Ilda. I explained where we were, and Craig said, “That is an amazing coincidence!”

He and Ilda were on their way to Palm Springs as well. We thought about meeting

for dinner, but it was Valentine’s Day and the restaurants were already booked.

Greta and I just happened to have some wine with us, and we ended up meeting Craig and Ilda at the Palm Springs Tennis Club where we were staying. We popped the corks and got to know them in person.

Craig is 72. Ilda is 67. They knew each other in 1962 when living in Riverside. It was apparent from the conversation that Craig had had a keen eye for Ilda since then, although both had married and gone their separate ways.

After Craig was divorced and Ilda was widowed, they reconnected on Match.com and had their first date at the Five Crowns Restaurant in Corona Del Mar in 2010. At that time, Craig lived in Running Springs and Ilda lived in Crestline, near Big Bear.

nior romance that began at the Bargain Box Thrift Shop in San Clemente eight years before led to a totally impromptu meeting with Craig and Ilda at the Palm Springs Tennis Club on Valentine’s Day, 2018.

he migration of gray whales along Dana Point’s beautiful coastline is one of the most spectacular sites one can experience. Whether standing on the shore, the cliffs or taking in an adventure at sea, the thrill and beauty of seeing these giants of the ocean never disappoints. It’s for this remarkable e perience that Dana Point celebrates the estival of Whales every year.

Over two weekends in March, Dana Point is alive with activities. icking off the estival is the memorable parade down Pacific Coast Highway ending with the Street air at La Plaza Park. estival activities range from rt in the Park, classic car displays, the Diamond Dig for kids and band performances at Baby Beach.

Whale watching excursions take place every day of the Festival.

This year, we have a very special treat. Serving as grand marshal of the estival of Whales is the commanding officer of the .S. Marines Corps’ 5th Marine egiment, Colonel eorge C. Schreffler III. Dana Point is home to the 5th Marine egiment Support roup, one of the largest and most successful Marine egiment Support roups in Orange County. We are proud of our Marines and are very pleased to honor Col. Schreffler III and his 5th Marines as a part of this year’s celebration. he Cardboard Classic & Dinghy Dash is not to be missed. Building and racing a boat made out of cardboard and duct tape requires creativity, ingenuity and a certain bravado. nother one of my favorite events is the Whale of a Pancake breakfast at Baby Beach.

s we embark on the 4 th annual Festival of Whales, it is important to look back at the natural and human history of this iconic celebration. Scientists believe gray whales have long used the Dana Point Headlands as a

BY ANDREA SWAYNE, EVENT COORDINATOR wayfinding landmark on their annual roundtrip migration between their cold Arctic feeding grounds and the warm water birthing and calving lagoons of Baja Mexico. It is this annual 10,000-mile magical migration that served as the original inspiration for the Festival.

Whale watching in the area was the idea of the late San Clemente High School science teacher Philip rignon who convinced sportfishing company owner Don Hansen to run whale watching excursions for students. Hansen started these trips from the San Clemente Pier in the late 1960s, where his fishing operation was then running. Hansen moved to Dana Point as Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching ust before the Harbor opened in 19 1 and put the city on the map as a great place to see whales in their natural environment. lthough, that first year, the estival of Whales was a yet unnamed and informal celebration of the annual migration of the huge marine mammals, so began the 4 -year tradition of celebrating the big grays. he idea for the estival’s creation is credited to two local women. rignon gave some credit for the idea to his San Clemente High School colleague Patricia Cassi. nd the late Orange County/Dana Point historian Doris Walker is credited with organizing the first estival of Whales Parade in 19 3. It began as a costume parade for children, and under her guidance continued to grow each year. It is now an epic kickoff with floats, bands, giant helium balloons and more, parading down Pacific Coast Highway on opening day.

As the Festival nears its golden anniversary, its original spirit continues to flourish, making it one of the most highly anticipated, fun and exciting events of the year. When speaking about the technicalities behind her design, Michinock spoke confidently.

“I wanted the whale to be the main focus, held by the waves and supported by Dana Point, Michinock explained. “I have always loved Disney and have been inspired by their three-tier visuals too.”

She said the whale tail is meant to be “held” by the waves in the sea and its central position is symbolic to the mammal’s cultural and historical relevance in Dana Point.

The orange dot in the background represents both the sun and the point in Dana Point, a key geographical location in Orange County.

Color choice was also a large focus for Michinock in her winning design.

“I usually don’t focus too much on colors,” she admitted. “I prefer to work in gray-scale. However, in this design, I relied heavily on my understanding of the Pantone scale that I recently studied in college. fter graduating from California State niversityullerton in spring 201 with a double ma or in illustration and graphic design, Michinock is actively pursuing her passions in Orange County. hese days, she said she is excited by innovative and creative package design, the intersection of beauty and tangibility.

I’ve always been focused on function-first art. If it isn’t useful, I’m not interested,” Michinock said. •

t shouldn’t have been a surprise when Frankie Michinock, 23, of Laguna Niguel, admitted that she didn’t have a printed copy of her award-winning 2018 Festival of Whales graphic. fter being identified as one of the top five logo designers from over 0 entries by the Festival of Whales Foundation Board of Directors, Michinock—who is rather humble—was blown away after being named a finalist, and later received just under 1,000 votes in the public voting section hosted on social media. Not long after the polls closed on social media she was crowned, leaving little time to absorb the news in full.

“I still can’t believe this. I’m in shock,” Michinock exclaimed while looking overwhelmed with the attention. “It’s unbelievable. I can’t thank my friends, family and everyone who voted enough.”

Home town pride and pressure This was Michinock’s third time entering the Festival of Whales logo design contest. The Laguna Niguel resident and Dana Hills High School graduate placed fourth her sophomore year of high school in 2010 and second in 2012, but said she has always identified with Dana Point as home and definitely felt motivated and a bit of pressure—from her home-town pride while designing this year’s award-winning graphic.

Michinock said that it was during her time at Dana Hills, under the motivational tutelage of Visual and Performing rts Department Chair Natalie Hribar-Kelly, that she began to believe in her skills in the arts.

For her latest entry, Michinock said she was inspired by the graphics on the trolleys that circulate Dana Point for the design.

“I wanted to give my design a timeless feel,” Michinock said. “All of the designs (in the past) were incredible, but I thought it was important to create a graphic that appealed to a wide variety

Dana Hills students set sail in search of inspiration amongst the waves

A

nxious energy rippled through the air as 58 Dana Hills High School (DHHS) students prepared to board Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching’s boat the Dana Pride.

Each year, students from DHHS fine art classes including .P. studio art, video production and drawing and painting classes set sail out of the Dana Point Harbor in order to gain inspiration for creative projects to be displayed and sold during the annual Festival of Whales celebration.

DHHS fine art teachers rista odriguez and Chau Tran, whose classes were attending this year’s Festival of Whales inspiration trip, voiced that this whale watching experience has more to offer their students through the challenges it presents, than its leisure.

“The tones of the water, the texture of the skin of the animals, it all becomes so much more real. You can emulate as many things as you want, but there is nothing like the real thing,” Tran said.

For some students, the Festival of Whales inspiration trip is a routine day on the water, for others, never before explored territory, but for all, growth is formed from stepping outside of

the stable platform of the classroom, and stepping foot into the wind and the waves.

Sky Hernandez, a unior at DHHS, had never been on a boat before this trip. When asked how that could be, she responded simply, saying that she was afraid of the ocean.

“I’ll go to the beach sometimes, but I have never been on a boat. To be honest, I’m afraid of the ocean, Hernandez said, adding that her older sister inspired her to attend. odriguez voiced that this is not an uncommon experience for students in her DHHS classes.

“For a lot of us, the ocean and things like boats are second nature, odriguez said.

“But we have to remember that for some, just because it is close doesn’t mean it’s their reality. Boats are expensive and time consuming; it’s amazing to be able to bring these kids into a new world right in their own backyard.”

For some DHHS Students, in retrospect, the most inspiring moments may have been what they have learned about themselves as much as any natural elements.

“It’s beautiful, I had no idea. I’m a little shaky, but I like it, Hernandez said calmly, sitting on the back deck of the Dana Pride. Succumbing to sea-sickness earlier in the trip, she now sat firmly planted on the deck, eyes peeled for her prized gem a gray whale.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Melanie Shams, a senior at DHHS, combs the deck of the Dana Pride like a sailor who has earned her sea legs.

That’s because she has. he 1 -year-old video production student is attending the trip to work on her video editing and interviewing skills. Shams, who aspires to be a lawyer, seems to float along the boat as others warily cling to the rails for support.

Her comfort is evident; managing her movement on the boat as opposed to surviving the rise and fall of each step, Shams is taking advantage of the opportunity to intertwine her passion and her education.

Occasionally cracking a smile, Shams maintains an obvious sense of control amongst her classmates, keeping her own personal progression to herself.

Once the Dana Pride returned to the Harbor, the students seemed to have settled in. Quietly and contently taking in their surroundings, a majority appear more contemplative; sitting along the railings with their feet hanging over the passing waves below.

Walking Directions from OCTA Bus Stop For those guests that are utilizing the OCTA bus stops on PCH, you can reach the Festival by walking down Dana Point Harbor Drive to the Harbor’s Golden Lantern entrance area or you can enter Doheny State Beach (direction sign at bus stop near bridge), walk along the barrier fence, then proceed toward the beach to the marked Festival of Whales shuttle stop. Ride the shuttle FREE to all event locations.

Parade Day Shuttle (March 3 only) FREE shuttle service will be available one hour prior to the Festival of Whales Parade. Park in the Harbor or at Doheny State Beach and ride to the drop-off location for the northerly Parade Announcer Stand. At the conclusion of the Parade, meet at the drop-off location and the shuttle will return you to the Harbor.

Street Fair Shuttle (March 3 only) FREE shuttle service will be available from all Harbor locations to the Street Fair from Noon to 4 p.m.

Water Taxi Daily service during the Festival will be offered between Dana Wharf and the Ocean Institute from noon to 5 p.m. Round trip tickets are $5 per person. Westwind Sailing hosts the 3rd annual Cardboard Classic & Dinghy Dash, a fun-filled, family oriented day that includes a cardboard boat building contest (Cardboard Classic) and race (the Dinghy Dash), exhibition booths, food, music and awards. Whale Entanglement and How Whale Watchers Can Help

here are a remarkable number of year-round whales and dolphins just off of the coast of Dana Point.

Throughout the year, various species can be seen including blue whales, humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, and the gray whales that Dana Point is celebrating with our annual festival.

With so many beautiful animals to encounter, like it or not, whale watchers are on the front lines for protecting and helping whales, regardless of if they’re on a commercial whale watching vessel or operating their own recreational boat. Anyone who watches whales may be the first to spot one in trouble, and as a result, most rescues begin with a sighting from a whale watching boat. Without help, injured or entangled whales can suffer greatly and die.

In 2016, the most recent year that official federal data became available, 71 whales were reported entangled off of the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington. This includes 54 reported humpback whales, four reported endangered blue whales and one killer whale. 2016 represents the highest annual total of reported whale entanglements off of the U.S. West Coast since NOAA Fisheries began record keeping in 1982. An estimated 308,000 dolphins and whales worldwide die every year because of fishing gear entanglement.

The majority of these entangled whales were spotted and reported first by whale watchers.

Many of these vessels not only reported these animals to the proper authorities, but also stayed with the whales until trained rescue teams could arrive. This action resulted in some whales surviving their entanglements.

Unfortunately, however, the majority of whale disentanglement efforts fail to remove all of the entangled gear, and as a result, the entangled whales often die later.

The vast majority of whale and dolphin entanglements worldwide are caused by active fishing gear. Dungeness crab traps are the primary source of entanglements off of California.

In 2016, 19 humpback whales were reported as entangled in commercial crab trap fishery gear.

The rope and buoy attached to the crab traps are what entangles the whale. So, if we eliminate the rope and buoy, we could end the majority of the entanglements.

As I write this, I am in Australia to meet with the president of Fiomarine Industries, an innovative company that has designed and built an electronic pop-up buoy called the Fiobuoy. The device allows the rope and buoy to stay coiled up on the bottom of the ocean until a fisherman flips a switch on his boat. A sonic release is triggered and the buoy and rope float to the surface. The Fiobuoy will automatically provide its location to the fisherman and the local ish

We asked National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Education Coordinator Alicia Keefe to share guidelines for whale watchers and boaters at this year’s Festival of Whales and beyond.

and ame uthority to prevent loss, or fishing in restricted areas. The buoy has a fail-safe electronic and galvanic release that can be set to release whenever a fisherman chooses. he Fiobuoy has the potential to eliminate most entanglements.

An individual buoy can cost about $10,000. I convinced the CEO of Fiomarine, John Fiotakis, to send me one of these buoys in the hopes we could get crab fishermen off of California to try it. John assured me that if he received an order of 200,000 Fiobuoys, the equivalent of the number of Dungeness crab traps currently operating off of California, he could mass produce them and lower the price to about $300 each.

Crab fishermen and conservation organizations have formed a working group off of Central California to solve the problem of entanglement. Conservation groups like the Center for Biological Diversity have sued to stop the problem. And lawmakers are considering legislation to prevent it. Commercial crab fishing has not changed much in the last century. Maybe it’s time to bring crab fishing into the 21st century. If not Fiobuoy then some similar technology can certainly be fine-tuned to eliminate these entangling ropes and buoys.

After all, how much is a whale worth?

If we can end the Dungeness crab trap entanglements here in California, then we can do the same on the East Coast as well, where endangered right whales risk extinction because of entanglement in similar gear, (along with some other issues, but the biggest cause of death is entanglement), according to a recent NOAA report. And then the U.S. can be a model to help solve this problem worldwide, where we are losing nearly 1,000 dolphins and whales every day to entanglement.

tell you that we have some of the best whale and dolphin watching in the world in Southern California. Thankfully, most whales we see off California are healthy and free of entanglements.

What you can do to help whales If you spot an entangled whale, please call 1.877.767.9425 or hail the U.S. Coast Guard on Channel 16. For your safety, do not approach the animal or attempt disentanglement.

Remain at a safe distance, and if possible, stay with the whale until trained rescue teams arrive or another boat can relieve you. Make a note of the location and species of the whale or a description. Without getting too close, try to get photos or videos of the entanglement, which can provide helpful information to rescuers.

This stage is critical as most reported whales are lost if no one stays with them.

Buy .S. caught fish. We have more restrictions on our fishing and less bycatch than many other countries. These restrictions mean that fish cost more to catch in the .S. and imports are likely cheaper. That is unfair to .S. fishermen. Importing fish caught without as many rules means more whales, dolphins and other animals die. The Marine Mammal Protection ct MMP specifically bans this type of trade and prohibits importing seafood that is caught with more bycatch than our U.S. fisheries allow our fishermen to have. However, this law is not being well enforced.

Guidelines for all whale watchers • Whale watching can be a positive and enriching experience when conducted responsibly. We must remember that our presence has an effect on whales and their habitat. Just like us, whales need space to find food, choose mates, raise young, socialize and rest. When we get too close, approach too fast, or make too much noise, we can interrupt natural behaviors and cause unnecessary stress.

• Stay at least 100 yards away from all marine mammals.

• Be cautious and quiet when around areas of known or suspected wildlife activity, at haul-outs, and bird colonies.

• It is illegal to harass marine mammals, which means to disrupt their natural behaviors including feeding, nursing, resting and migration. To report violations, call the NOAA Fisheries Enforcement Hotline: 1.800.853.1964.

Additional guidelines for boaters • Look in all directions before planning your approach or departure from viewing wildlife.

• Reduce your speed to less than 7 knots while in the presence of marine mammals.

• Move parallel to the animal’s direction of travel and keep their path clear. Do not approach from the front or from behind.

Avoid any abrupt course changes.

• When whales are traveling close to shore, stay on their offshore side.

• If a whale approaches you, put the engine in neutral and allow the whale to pass.

• View whales for no more than 30 minutes. This will reduce the cumulative impact of all vessels and give consideration to other viewers.

an Clemente native Tyler Bardzilowski, also known as BARDZ, is set to return to the coast for his Los Angeles show debut.

According to a press release, Bardzilowski grew up in San Clemente and graduated from San Clemente High School in 2013. BARDZ is set to play at the AVALON Hollywood on Monday, March 5.

“Always an avid musician, he had his early beginnings by teaching himself guitar and playing various talent shows, adding his music to Relay for Life events, all the while honing his craft and growing musically,” the release stated.

During his four years at Arizona State University, he continued to pursue his craft, spending free time on his passion.

He eventually began performing at small venues in and around Tempe, Arizona, cul-

minating in recurring gigs at Shady Park to sold-out crowds of followers and peers.

“His shows are energetic, diverse, and incorporate live guitar, drums and keys in his sets,” the press release stated.

On Jan. 19, he released his debut album, Elsewhere, with a total of three tracks. On Spotify, people can find BARDZ and the three tracks “Kelona,” “Attitudes” and “Threshold,” and another track with the eponymous record name.

The style of BARDZ’s music can be likened to the house and dubstep movement that grained traction beginning at the end of the 2000s and has been flourishing in years since. The compilation of trance and ambient sounds makes for easy listening as well as for dancing.

He performs on a variety of instruments brought together by synthesizing harmonies.

“As he caught the attention of local papers, magazines and online blogs spanning across the country and even in Europe, the traction began to snowball,” the release stated.

Each of the bars has all of the ingredients listed. With the exception of the dark chocolate bar, which requires some organic cane sugar, the only other ingredients are what is listed as the flavor.

“The bar business is very crowded; there are a lot of people who claim a lot of things,” Carrete said. “Very often when you have to read the ingredients, it’s like a science project. Half of the ingredients you don’t know what they are, and if you do know, you don’t really know how good they are for you.”

The banana’s last longer in their packages, but the partners wanted to create something healthy that wouldn’t go bad, as bananas don’t last very long after they’re picked.

Carrete said he was in the extreme sports and surfing industry for some time before he wanted to venture out to something different. He said he didn’t want to leave the surf industry (even though he’s as avid a surfer as they come in San Clemente), but said he found his calling. The business began about a year and a half ago, and is now starting to branch out.

“When we went on surf trips in South America, you could eat bananas all the time to keep yourself healthy and hydrated,” Carrete said. “We always

Camacho said he’s bound by law not to say what is safe and what’s not safe, but he said the company can show that it uses products with lower toxicity than others.

“We focus a lot on listening to our customers,” Camacho said. “We listen to how customers want to be serviced, but we are upfront about if we can meet that expectation. We don’t force people into contracts or services.”

“We truly have a love for the community of San Clemente, and we’d love to get plugged in with anyone else who is hoping to grow the community and their own business,” Camacho said.

Inaugural Marine Raider Challenge takes place throughout San Clemente

rom the shores of the San Clemente Pier, around almost the circumference of the city and to the newly established Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park, the Marine Raider Challenge’s first year saw all 30 competitors successfully best the course on Feb. 17.

It was planned for competitors to file in around 2 p.m., but the teams, made up of 30 former and active Marine Raiders and U.S. Army Special Forces in teams of two, all made it to the park by about 11 a.m. SC San Clemente Times February 22-28, 2018

As of press time on Feb. 21, there are three San Clemente High School teams remaining in the CIF-SS playoffs—girls water polo, boys soccer and girls basketball. Until then, let’s check in on each team, how they got here and their prospects going forward.

Girls Water Polo

The Tritons are the No. 1 seed in Division 2 and earned it in a late surge.

The South Coast League champions were strong all season, but a tough schedule kept them lower in the combined Division 1 & 2 rankings. An excellent performance and ninth-place finish at the SoCal championships rocketed San Clemente up the rankings to, appropriately, No. 9.

The Tritons were dominant in their firstround opener with a 14-3 home win over Redondo Union on Feb. 15. San Clemente took their act on the road and beat La Canada in the quarterfinals, 11-9, on Feb. 17.

San Clemente took on Santa Barbara in the semifinals at the Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine with the winner moving on to play Newport Harbor or Santa Margarita in the final on Saturday, Feb. 24. At the SoCal championships, the Tritons beat Santa Margarita, 10-4, and Newport Harbor, 4-3.

Boys Soccer

San Clemente is battle-tested as the South Coast League champion.

After a loss at Aliso Niguel on Jan. 19 tightened up the league standings, the Tritons earned a result in their final four regular season games, including a revenge win against Aliso Niguel, 2-0, to clinch the league title in the season finale. Blake Bowen and Koosha Jadbabaei scored the goals for San Clemente in the finale.

San Clemente opened the Division 1 playoffs at home against Century on Feb. 16.

KC Smith opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but Century tied it up before halftime. The Tritons shuffled their formation and got the offense rolling in the second half. Bowen, Quinn Richards and Liam Linas all scored in the second half of the 4-2 win.

San Clemente travelled to Palos Verdes on Feb. 21 with the winner playing at topseeded Servite or Warren in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Girls Basketball

The Tritons surged into the playoffs with three straight wins to clinch the third guaranteed playoff berth in the South Coast League and rolled with that momentum into the Division 3AA playoffs.

San Clemente came out strong at Ocean View in the first round and staved off a late comeback by the Seahawks. Shae Waters led the Tritons with 15 points. Ella Gardiner scored 14 points and Morgan Thomas had 12 points.

In the second round, San Clemente outlasted Mayfair at home, 55-49. Gardiner led the way with 23 points, and Waters scored 13 points. Gardiner matched her point total in rebounds with 23.

The Tritons hosted Cabrillo of Lompoc on Feb. 21 and the winner will play at Sunny Hills or Rancho Verde in the semifinals on Feb. 24.

Poncino had previously qualified for a PGA event 10 years ago in Tucson, his only other PGA entry, but the step up to Riviera was something else.

“This was different in regards to the quality of the field,” Poncino said. “(It’s) the best quality you’ll see outside of a major.”

Poncino saw plenty of San Clemente representation in the crowd and got a laugh when they ribbed his caddie a little.

The crowd added to the major differences between playing at a local course versus at a PGA event.

“The course is just a lot harder,” Poncino said. “Longer, tougher, the greens are faster. The energy from the crowd.”

Poncino had a rough start with an opening round of 82, but came back with a 75 on the second day. He missed the cut at

HAILEY LANGLAND FAILS TO QUALIFY IN OLYMPIC WOMEN’S BIG AIR San Clemente’s Winter Olympian, 17-yearold snowboarder Hailey Langland, finished 14th in the qualifying runs for women’s big air and failed to qualify as one of the top 12 for the final in South Korea on Feb. 19.

With her big air result and her sixth place in women’s slopestyle on Feb. 12, Langland’s competitions in PyeongChang are over. The closing ceremonies are Feb. 25.

Langland had a strong opener on her first qualifying run. She pulled off a clean cab 720 for a score of 73.00 and gave a confident shimmy to the camera at the bottom of her run. The score put her in 10th after the first run through.

On her second jump, Langland tried to raise her score with a cab 900. She made the grab and got around on the spins, but she couldn’t nail the landing. Langland landed on the backside of her board and fell for a score of 29.00.

Langland’s top score of 73 was pushed down to 14th after 12 of the 13 riders that

“Other than the start I had, I played pretty well,” Poncino said. “The first six holes were pretty awful, but I settled down. I beat some pretty good players on the second day.”

Bubba Watson won the LA Open at 12 under par with rounds of 68, 70, 65 and 69.

Poncino qualified through an event at Hacienda Country Club in La Habra. He played a bogey-free event and beat out 79 other players for the one qualifying spot.

“It was pretty exciting,” Poncino said.

“We get two of those a year, for Torrey Pines and Riviera. I got class A status from PGA four years ago, and I’d been close on a couple.” SC

The big air finals will be contested on Feb. 22 with the first of three runs at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Life of a Legend Surfing Heritage and Culture Center to open exhibit featuring work of Bruce Brown FOR THE SAN CLEMENTE TIMES

reator of The Endless Summer and legendary documentary filmmaker, Bruce Brown’s life will be celebrated this weekend at the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC).

“You can’t tell how good a wave is until you ride it,” Brown once said, according to a press release from SHACC. “Brown never set out to change the sport of surfing. In the beginning, he was just a guy making surf movies with his friends. His early works include jazz-infused Slippery When Wet, Surf Crazy, Barefoot Adventure and Surfing Hollow Days. Then came The Endless Summer in 1964 and everything changed.”

The Endless Summer ended up smashing national theater attendance records during its 18-month run and showed for 48 straight weeks in New York City, the release stated.

“Film critics labelled Brown ‘the Bergman of the boards’ and ‘the Fellini of the foam.’ What the film meant for surfing was a broader acceptance of the sport, and more importantly, the lifestyle. It also provided surfers with the freedom to dream and discover what waves may be breaking beyond the horizon.”

Following on that success, Brown teamed up with actor Steve McQueen to produce the Academy Award-nominated motorcycle film, On Any Sunday. Largely shot in the dunes behind Dana Point, it proved to be as transformative to the moto-riding world as The Endless Summer was for surfing.

In 1994, Brown reprised his classic, and alongside his son, Dana Brown, set out to make The Endless Summer II. Starring Robert “Wingnut” Weaver and Pat O’Connell, the film was a huge hit with the new generation.

“Starring icons of the sport such as Kelly Slater, Laird Hamilton and Gerry Lopez, it reinvigorated the surf culture and solidified Brown’s reputation as the greatest surf filmmaker of all time,” the release stated.

No Surf? How About a History Lesson?

With a dower surf forecast for the rest of the winter, here’s a brief look back at the evolution of San Onofre

S

o, anyone else notice it’s been an unusually slow winter for surf? We had that one run of swell in mid-January, but otherwise, man, it’s been a slow stretch.

And now we’re starting to stare March in the eyes with no real signs of improvement.

Thumbing through the forecast on Surfline’s mobile app this morning, I’m not holding my breath for anything over kneeto waist-high for the next couple of weeks.

“It’s a good time to get stuff done—like work—I guess,” commiserated one of my friends.

With that in mind, in another of my futile attempts to “get organized,” last weekend I was going through some of my old writing files when I stumbled upon a research project I’d worked on for Jim Kempton some years back. You’ve most likely read Jim’s eloquence in this paper.

At the time I did this project for him, he was running the San Onofre Foundation.

He’d asked me to compile as many factoids about San O as I could dig up. A bit

of a history nerd myself, I jumped into the effort in earnest.

To be honest, I don’t know what Jim ever did with the work, but as I was reading over it yesterday, with the surf as flat as it was and a lull in the competitive action, I wanted to share some of the little gems I found.

For starters, the name. It is likely the park gets its name from Saint Onophrius, an obscure Christian monk who lived as a hermit in the Egyptian desert. The name “Onofre” is commonly used in Spanish and Portuguese, and when early Spanish explorers made their way north from San Diego in search of an inland route to Monterey, some historians believe they named the area after the saint.

Originally, San Onofre referred to much of the expanse of coast between the communities of San Clemente and Oceanside.

It’s worth noting that some people in Italy pray to Saint Onuphrius when they have lost something, as it is thought that repeating the prayer while looking for something—such as lost keys or a misplaced iPhone—will help in finding it. Given how many sets of keys are lost and never found in the sand at San O every summer, the effectiveness of this prayer is debatable.

The oldest “beach shack” at San O dates back 9,000 years. It was known as the village of Panhe and was established by the Acjachemen Nation, the park’s original inhabitants. The remains of the village can still be found on the state park grounds. It’s also the site of the first baptism in California.

On the surfing front, anybody who rides waves around here should have a brief appreciation for just how San Onofre came to be one of the birthplaces of surf culture on the West Coast. It was first surfed in the early 1920s, although it’s still debated who the first person to surf at San Onofre was.

Some say it was Laguna Beach’s George “Peanuts” Larson. Others contend it was Matt Brown and Lorrin “Whitey” Harrison. Given that was nearly 100 years ago, the mystery will probably never be solved conclusively, but it’s fun to banter about.

By the late 1920s, you could find an average of 50-75 surfers at San Onofre on any given day. Back then it cost “two bits,” or two quarters, to get in for the day. Today, that number of surfers in the water has blossomed to hundreds and it costs $15 to get into the California State Park for the day.

The San Onofre Surfing Club was loosely formed in 1951. In early 1952, the club tightened up its program by hiring paid gate guards who checked for the official club windshield decal. The original logo of the San Onofre Surf Club was fashioned by artist Don Smith, a machinist for Disney. The first formal meeting of the San Onofre Surfing Club was called to order by Dr. Barney Wilkes on the beach on April 24, 1952. This meeting established the club bylaws (as prepared

by Andre Jahan), annual dues, the club budget and banking procedures, membership cards, decals, beach access control, beach maintenance as well as rules of conduct and access as agreed upon with the Marine Corps.

It wasn’t until 1971 that a decree from then-President Richard Nixon created San Onofre State Beach. He was supported by then-Governor Ronald Regan. Today, San Onofre State Park is one of the most popular parks in California, drawing millions of visitors every year.

Unfortunately, as I write this, Southern California Edison is in the process of burying spent nuclear waste from the shuttered power plant on the shoreline. It’s anybody’s guess where this next chapter in our local history is going to take us. SC

n eighth-grader at Marco Forster Middle School, 13-year-old Ryann Daly’s one of the next generation that’s leading the charge in Dana Point. A distinguished member of the Dana Point Surf Club, she first jumped on a board when she was 7 years old and has hardly stepped off since.

“I love to surf at Salt Creek on a daily basis, but sometimes I switch it up and go to San O,” Daly said. “I really like Creek because it has diversity and provides different types of waves to perform on.

“I love the ocean and being surrounded by people who enjoy it just as much,” Daly continued. “I am my happiest when I am out in the water seeing friends and surfing fun waves, especially in the summer when the water is warm and we spend all day at the beach.”

Hard to argue with warm water and summer days on the beach with friends.

But Daly’s also putting in the hard yards and working to improve her skills.

When asked where she thinks the sport will take her in 10 years, she explained, “I plan to work hard on improving and reaching the goals I have set for myself. I want to continue to have fun with this amazing sport and keep a healthy, happy lifestyle.
