Man Dies after Crashing Vehicle into Stopped Flatbed Semi-Truck THE LATEST: California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers closed the northbound offramp to Avenida Pico for a few hours on Jan. 17 after a fatal car collision occurred.

Dan Miller, 57, of San Marcos, was pronounced dead at the scene.

At 8:15 a.m., CHP received a call about a vehicle being wedged under a semi-truck, CHP Officer Rafael Reynoso said. The car was a 2011 BMW 335.

“We have reports of the vehicle slowing down for the off-ramp and unexpectedly speeding back up at a high rate,” Reynoso said. “First, we believe that he collided into the exit sign, Exit 76, at the top of the off-ramp. (He) continued on down, sideswiping the guardrail (on the west side of the off-ramp), and he continued on to rear-end a semi-truck that was stopped for the red light,” which is at the intersection of Avenida Pico.

Reynoso said the man was likely dead immediately after the collision.

A few men wearing jackets with the same decal that was emblazoned on the flatbed were on-scene but declined to comment, and a Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) representative requested privacy on their behalf.

“The driver has been cooperating with the investigation,” Reynoso said.

San Clemente Looks to Vacate Membership of Transportation Corridor Agencies THE LATEST: At the Jan. 16 City Council meeting, City Attorney Scott Smith said the Council may opt to vacate San Clemente as a member of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), the joint powers authority that administers The Toll Roads.

could be affected by such construction, city officials said they and many people in San Clemente were ignored and their concerns haven’t been taken seriously.

“We don’t think that they’re listening to us,” Smith said following the City Council meeting, adding that he and his staff don’t think the TCA would be allowed to construct a toll road outside its boundaries. “If San Clemente can influence that decision, then it would withdraw from the TCA.” Mayor Tim Brown said he wants to discuss the possible ramifications of remaining or withdrawing from the TCA. “It’s unexplored territory for us, but we feel as if we have been, particularly in the settlement discussions, we were completely dismissed or bypassed in that process, and it’s a real sign to us where our priority and place is in TCA,” Mayor Tim Brown said. “It’s unfortunate we’re walking down this path, but we’re going to explore that path and see if there’s something that could remedy this.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The decision to withdraw from the TCA would have be put to a vote among the City Council, the date of which would be distributed through public notice.

“Withdrawal requires a 120-day notice, so the first thing (the Council) wanted us to do was to see if TCA would agree to shorten that notice,” Smith said.

If the TCA rejects the waiver of the notice, Smith said a special meeting could take place to formally give notice.

“Before the end of this month, we could get this Council together,” Smith said.

Recipients of Via Ballena Receive Money from Settlement THE LATEST: The attorney working on behalf of several homeowners along Via

Ballena near Shorecliffs Golf Club, where a landslide took place in 2011, said the owners who were affected by the landslide have been reimbursed through a lawsuit for damages to their properties.

Attorney Serge Tomassian said the final reimbursement to the homeowners was about $10.5 million, but it could be more, as the final cost of repairs to the slope where the landslide took place may change.

Some of the homeowners due compensation are in their 80s and 90s, and some have died since the landslide occurred.

WHAT’S NEXT: The city of San Clemente is currently repairing a drainage pipe underneath the slope where the homes are located, which is intended to bolster the hillside and allow for water to flow freely from the area where the homes are located down to a collection pool at the end.

The water would eventually be released into a drainage. —EH

Locker Board, Wahoo’s Founders Speak at Business Event THE LATEST: On Jan. 18, The International Executive Council (IEC) of the Internet Marketing Association (IMA) hosted a lecture about entrepreneurship with stories from restauranteur Wing Lam, co-founder of Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, and San Clemente’s 12-year-old Carson Kropfl, the inventor of Locker Board, a functional skateboard that fits in compact spaces.

“It was really fun, and I got to talk to some of the top business owners in Orange County about the importance of networking,” Kropfl said. “I told my story about getting on Shark Tank and getting Richard Branson as my investor. Wing is one of the best mentors ever.”

Maryott, who will run as a Republican, becomes the ninth candidate thus far to declare their candidacy. The three other Republicans running are Rocky Chavez of Oceanside, Diane Harkey of Dana Point and Joshua Schoonover of San Marcos.

The four Democrats who are running are Doug Applegate of San Clemente, Paul Kerr of San Diego, San Juan Capistrano’s Mike Levin and Sara Jacobs of Encinitas.

Jordan Mills of Oceanside is running as a member of the Peace and Freedom Party.

Citing political experience, Maryott reiterated that he is a Republican, but that he worked for four years as the chief of staff in the 1980s for “a Democrat state legislator in Massachusetts.”

Unifying Congress under whomever is president is a critical theme Maryott said he will establish in his campaign.

“What I support is a strong national defense and a Congress that’s willing to stand behind our commander in chief,” Maryott told The Capistrano Dispatch on Jan. 19. “What our president needs is a Congress that understands his mission and stands behind him.”

Additionally, Maryott said he would like to improve the conditions of social services across the board, as he said the failures of such institutions have hindered impoverished neighborhoods and contributed to crime.

In his press release, he described the U.S.’s current approach to immigration as “chaotic and disingenuous” and that he was eager to address the issues, though no official stance on the immigration was provided in the release.

WHAT’S NEXT: Since the announcement that Rep. Darrell Issa, who represented the 49th District since 2001, is not planning to retain his seat, candidates have been bolstering their political teams in preparation for what is shaping up to be a competitive primary election. South County cities voted for legalizing recreational cannabis use

Enforcement of marijuana laws hazy between state, federal law

A

n emerald rush has come to California.

The Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA) was enacted by the California Legislature in 2017, following the voterapproved Proposition 64 in 2016, which legalized recreational marijuana in the state.

It became law on Jan. 1. It is now legal for people 21 and older to consume marijuana at home, possess or gift up to one ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants at home. Edible cannabis products are also enforced by weight, of which people can purchase and possess up to 8 grams.

Laws regarding cultivation for commercial facilities are much more complicated and are overseen by the state’s Bureau of Cannabis Control (BCC) within the Department of Consumer Affairs, Department of Food and Agriculture, and state Department of Public Health.

But just like the repeal of prohibition of alcohol in 1933, some cities and counties have enacted laws to curtail marijuana enterprises.

Local authority Attorney Michael Cindrich, the owner of the Law Offices of Michael E. Cindrich APC in San Diego, is a lifetime member of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Law (NORML) and has litigated on behalf of cannabis users’ rights.

“Part of the key elements that made Prop 64 attractive was that it provided the ability for individual cities and counties to have full authority to regulate cannabis activities, and part of that is the ability to ban cannabis,” Cindrich said.

San Clemente allows people to grow up to six marijuana plants in their homes or accessory structures on the same property, and there is no permit application process for that.

However, the city does not allow for commercial dispensaries to operate within city limits nor can delivery services for recreational marijuana be utilized within its borders, and people cannot consume it in public, just like alcohol.

At San Clemente City Council meetings in early 2017, there was more support from public speakers in favor of limiting any cannabis use or cultivation, but a few advocates spoke on behalf of keeping options open.

saries and cultivation centers.

Dana Point has the same laws as San Clemente but goes further to prohibit any cultivation of marijuana plants, whether they’re for commercial or personal use.

Same as San Clemente, the San Juan Capistrano City Council voted in January 2016 to ban cannabis dispensaries and manufacturers, as well as marijuana delivery within the city, and residents who want to cultivate up to six plants for personal use can do so, but the difference is they must fill out a permit application with the city.

Susan Parmelee, the executive director of the Wellness and Prevention Center at San Clemente High School, said there are some pitfalls of normalizing cannabis that could affect youth.

“Now that we’ve made it recreational, we need to get rid of the medical designation until we have more research,” Parmelee said. “When kids hear that it’s medicine, they think it’s healthy. It makes kids think if it’s OK for adults, then it’s OK for them.

We try to emphasize what it does to teen brains because teen brains are still growing, and that’s why we emphasize the law is for people 21 years old or older.”

She said the center will likely start a campaign to make students aware of the effects of adolescent cannabis use in the fall.

“I encourage adults to educate themselves on what today’s marijuana looks like and how it really affects a teen’s decisions,” Parmelee said.

Chief of San Clemente Police Lt. Mike Peters said the most common infractions he’s seen is smoking in public since Prop 64 was passed.

“They have to recognize the law states it’s just like drinking in public,” Peters said.

The memos from that time directed federal prosecutors to focus solely on cases regarding distribution to minors, drug cartels and other illicit activity under federal law.

Cindrich said this could cause some investors in the industry to think twice before putting more money into cannabis.

“I think any time the federal government issues orders for more flexibility to prosecute federal cannabis crimes, there’s reason to be concerned; however, we have not seen any enforcement taken,” Cindrich said. “Until that happens, it will be business as usual for those entities.”

California Southern Section U.S. District Attorney Adam Braverman, who is in charge of enforcing federal law in this district, issued a statement to NBC 7 San Diego in support of Sessions’ memo.

“The Department of Justice is committed to reducing violent crime and enforcing the laws as enacted by Congress. The cultivation, distribution and possession of marijuana has long been and remains a violation of federal law,” Braverman stated. “We will continue to utilize longestablished prosecutorial priorities to carry out our mission to combat violent crime, disrupt and dismantle transnational criminal organizations and stem the rising tide of the drug crisis.”

California’s Central District interim U.S. Attorney Nicola Hanna was appointed by Sessions just weeks ago, and there hasn’t been much reported on his view of the matter. Hanna must be confirmed within 120 days of the appointment. SC

Federal laws Nine states have legalized recreational marijuana, but at the federal level, cannabis is still a Schedule I drug, the highest degree of enforcement in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s list of controlled substances that could cause “the highest level of abuse.”

Making legal matters murkier, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a

Despite the laws that govern recreational cannabis in the three South Orange County cities, San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano all voted in favor of Prop 64 in the 2016 general election, which legalizes recreational cannabis use, cultivation and delivery.

San Clemente voters were in favor of Prop 64, as 17,119 voted yes and 15,049 voted no, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters’ statement of votes.

San Juan Capistrano voted 8,242 to 7,591 in favor of Prop 64 and Dana Point voted 9,849 to 7,760 in favor. All cities had a voter turnout of 84 percent or higher of their respective registered populations.

Letter of the cannabis law Although California has adopted legal use of recreational marijuana, there are some laws that have been slightly altered and some remain intact.

Illegal possession of more than 28.5 grams or an ounce of marijuana (for adults 21 and older) is a $100 to $500 ticket, but illegal cultivation of cannabis can be as much as six months in jail, and illegal sales to minors are a felony and punishable of three to seven years in jail.

Manufacturing concentrated marijuana illegally and without a license is punishable of three to seven years in jail and up to $50,000 in fines.

Outdoor cultivation for residents without a permit is still illegal.

Depending on the company, employers can still institute marijuana-free workplace policies as well as mandatory drug tests. Nothing in the new state laws protects employees’ rights to using marijuana off-site.

Driving under the influence of marijuana is also illegal. While it’s still difficult to determine whether someone is under the influence of the substance, drug recognition experts can be called to the scene to provide an assessment, such as nysagmus (or a shaking) of the eye pupil, an indicator of being under the influence. The enforcement is the same as current driving under the influence laws.

t last, with the shortest day of the year behind us, we’re headed for longer and warmer days.

When I was in the Marines, there seemed to be no daytime or nighttime.

Days were all the same, just 24-hour periods of time. Activities flowed over time without regard to day or night except as combat conditions required. However, later in life it seemed like daylight hours became more desirable depending upon one’s activities. I’m so sensitive to this now that I seem to measure the time change in daylight and darkness every day.

Several weeks ago, I was talking to a friend about this who was unaware of the very specific dynamics of the north/south movement of the earth and the related change in seasons and daylight/nighttime. I think it’s so interesting to be aware of four very specific days of the year and what they mean.

Dec. 21: First day of winter and the shortest daylight and longest darkness of the year.

March 21: First day of spring and an even amount of daylight and darkness.

June 21: First day of summer and the longest daylight and shortest darkness of the year.

San Clemente and the California Coastal Commission are currently negotiating elements of San Clemente’s Land Use Plan for certification. One of the Commission’s goals has been to maintain public access to the coast. Recently, the Commission determined that to do this, “adequate lowcost lodging” for vacationers must exist within a city’s coastal zones.

To increase the number of low-cost lodging accommodations, the Commission has unilaterally defined vacation rentals as places of residence. In so doing, the Commission circumvents coastal cities’ zoning ordinances that prevent businesses from operating in areas zoned for residential use. Although the vacation rental industry

For example, on this day, it can be daylight in Seattle from around 4 a.m. until after 9 p.m. With all of this in mind, I seem to literally “count the hours of daylight each day.”

In this same context, although not technically about the number of hours in the day, one of the worst days of the year for me is the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) in November. Clocks are turned back and, in my mind, we have effectively lost an hour of usable daylight at the end of the day.

The Marine days/years had long passed, and I was commuting 40 miles each way from Huntington Beach to work in downtown LA on a daily basis. I was up at 5 a.m., and on the road at 5:10 a.m., downtown and working out with weights and running from 6-7:30 a.m. and at my desk by 8 a.m. Because of the traffic and my workload, I always worked until about

6 p.m. During the longer days, it was always pleasant daylight when I finished for the trip home. When DST turned the clock back, it became dark before 5 p.m., leaving another hour and a half of “working at night” each day and the long drive home in the dark. During that week, I had “no daylight hours of my own.” At first, I failed to appreciate that I picked up an hour of “daylight” for the very early morning commute.

Of course, there are always 24 hours in a day; so, regardless of the clock, we have the same amount of time 365 days a year.

It just seems that “daylight hours” have become more valued to me as the years go by. Bring on the daylight hours.

is thrilled by the Commission’s actions, it is wreaking havoc in residential neighborhoods up and down the California coast.

The only way vacation rentals can provide low-cost lodging to vacationers is by cramming three to four families into singlefamily homes.

In May 2016, San Clemente’s City Council passed two ordinances that allow vacation rentals and other commercial transitory lodging businesses, including sober living homes, boarding houses and bed-and-breakfast inns, to operate only in areas that are appropriately zoned for such use. Vacation rental owners were granted a two-year amortization period to wind down their businesses. Under the ordinances, vacation rentals operating outside of allowed areas are required to close by June of this year.

The San Clemente Vacation Rental Alliance, a group composed of vacation-rental owners and property managers, filed a lawsuit against San Clemente to prevent it from enforcing the ordinances. The alliance is now lobbying the Commission for its help in the matter.

Many vacation rentals operating outside of allowed areas have disregarded the ordinances and booked their properties well past June. They appear confident the alliance will prevail in its lawsuit, and/or through the Commission they will gain the right to continue operating in our neighborhoods.

If we allow special-interest groups and state agencies to dictate where we must allow commercial businesses to operate in residential areas, the character and charm of our town will be changed forever, and our peaceful and stable residential neighborhoods will be destroyed. n a rather surprisingly, underwhelming awards season this year, there are still some movies that are worth seeing on the big screen. Despite most of them being pretty safe or typical of the filmmakers’ work, my two recommendations this week are also a little flawed, but still intriguing: Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name and Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water.

As an almost spiritual follow-up to Todd Haynes’ Carol (2015), Call Me

By Your Name is set in 1983 northern Italy, where 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) spends his summer vacation in a love triangle between French peer Marzia (Esther Garrel) and a 24-year-old American, Oliver (Armie Hammer). The Shape of Water is like Del Toro’s take on E.T. (1982) and Beauty & the Beast (1991), but with his trademark gore and “R” rating. In 1960s Cold War-era D.C., Eliza Esposito (Sally Hawkins) is a mute janitor who becomes attached to a powerful sea creature kept trapped in the government laboratory where she works.

Both films coincidentally also co-star one of the best character actors in modern film, Michael Stuhlbarg. Call Me By Your Name is one of the rare films to not be completely oversaturated with hype from an Oscar campaign. The acting from Chalamet is award-worthy and one of the best breakthrough performances in the past decade. Sufjan Stevens’ dreamy music score is breathtaking. The Shape of Water, on the other hand, is a bit heavy-handed in tone and theme, with two love scenes between a woman and fish being rather awkward. But the cinematography, art direction and special effects are dazzling on the big screen. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

Once the owner of Carson Pop Art, Grier is now focusing on C/GREED Art, which is located in a gallery in North Beach that features his own work as well as others. “(I) had new ideas and concepts that were next-level,” Grier said. “I put all of my effort into this one project.” One of Grier’s pieces incorporates 70 iPhones placed together to make one collage.

The gallery officially opened on Dec. 9.

Grier said he wants to host different charity events too, and the next is going to be at the end of February with the Fender Guitars program Kids Rock Free in Corona.

On Friday, Jan. 26, C/GREED and the Street Artist in Residence program at House of Trestles will collaborate for a soft opening from 6-9 p.m.

Some of the paintings Grier said he displayed have taken hundreds of hours of work, using materials that made his subjects iconic.

Grier said he’s also collaborating with the San Clemente Historical Society with his “Keep San Clemente Beautiful” campaign.

They will be making T-shirts and limited-edition type print with proceeds going toward a new location for the society.

Grier also said he wants to house some of the society’s objects that have been in storage for some time.

“One day, I saw these flashes of awesome images of things in the future, and it kind of tripped me out,” Shively said while she was meditating. “That was my mindbody-spirit connection, and from there I was hooked.”

Shively earned her 200-hour yoga certification two years ago and started working with people in drug rehabilitation treatment and eventually started working with women who were suffering from breast cancer.

Shively’s business offers yoga classes that range in levels of difficulty.

“We loosely work off of the one-forone business model,” Shively said. “With every membership we sell, we provide 30 days of yoga for someone in need, both in need physically as well as financially.”

Shively said she’s been working with Family Assistance Ministries, Marine support groups and others to help people who could benefit from yoga.

The studio is open now, and a grand opening celebration date will be announced in the near future.

How Long should You Wait to Date after the Death of a Spouse?

I

n 24 years of writing about senior relationships, I’ve been asked many times, “How long should a widowed person wait to date?”

The most recent person to ask, Arlene of Laguna Woods, emailed, “What is a respectful time to wait to date after one’s spouse dies? A man I know is dating after six months of his wife’s passing. He’s in his mid-60s. I’ve asked many women what they think and what they say is, ‘It’s different for everyone.’ I say he could have waited a year out of respect for his deceased wife.”

The women who Arlene asked are correct: The length of time to wait to date again is different for everyone.

I don’t think respect is the issue here.

I don’t know any details about the man’s marriage. His wife could have been ill for years while he stood by her. If that were the case, he had already shown great respect for her.

Or, what if their marriage was unhappy and miserable? But out of respect for her and the institution of marriage, he hung in there. Waiting to date wouldn’t accomplish anything else.

A more important question: has he properly grieved and healed? If he hasn’t, he should not be dating. Men tend to date quicker than women after the death of a spouse. What often happens, particularly with new widowers, is that they are lonely; they start to date before they are ready. A nice woman comes along and falls in love with him.

A little later, he realizes he still misses his wife terribly and dumps the new girlfriend. So, in protecting his heart, he breaks hers. That’s not good.

What’s the proper period to wait for grief recovery? Impossible to say. Many times, I’ve asked widows and widowers how long they waited to date.

One widow wrote: “You’ll know you’re ready when you no longer find yourself dwelling on the past comforting. Only you will know that.”

By Tom Blake two years before I was emotionally ‘whole’ enough to consider another relationship.

Up to that point, my incessant talk about my late husband would have made any man run in the opposite direction.”

What happens if someone is still grieving and he or she meets someone they think would be a great partner who becomes interested in them?

Here’s where honesty is paramount. Out of respect for the new person, he should tell her he’s still grieving but feels they could become a loving couple, and, if she would be patient with him, it could work out. Then, as they go forward, they can openly and honestly discuss how things are progressing. In that way, no one gets blindsided.

Somewhat along that line, I had a friend whose mother saw a man she knew. His wife had died just months before. My friend said, “Mom questioned me whether it was too soon after his wife had died for her to ask him out for coffee. I told her you can’t control when opportunity knocks, and if you don’t answer the knock, it may not return.

A friend, Gale, told me years ago: “The man in my life had already done his grieving before his wife died, and no one has the right to dictate what that mourning period should be or for how long. That’s a right reserved exclusively for the partner left behind after a spouse dies.”

In other words, it’s no one’s business except the partner left behind on when they decide to date.

One thing is certain: As we enter our 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, we don’t have a lot of time to waste in deciding if we’re ready to date or not.

So, perhaps Arlene will not judge too harshly the mid-60s widower who is dating six months after his wife passed away.

Let’s hope he has adequately healed.

Langland Qualifies for Olympic Snowboarding

ailey Langland of San Clemente qualified for the United States women’s snowboarding big air and slopestyle team and will compete at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The 17-year-old nailed down her spot with a third-place finish in slopestyle at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix on Jan. 20 at Mammoth Mountain.

Langland earned a score of 61.36 to finish behind fellow Olympic qualifiers Jamie Anderson (84.10) and Julia Marino (74.86).

Anderson had already qualified going into the Mammoth event. Despite missing the finals at the previous qualifying event, Langland and Marino had already met the minimum qualification criteria with one topthree result against the rest of the field.

That criteria earned Langland the tiebreaker for the third spot on the U.S. team with podium finishes in two of the five qualifiers. A fourth member will be selected by Team USA before the Olympics.

Frohner: It’s a big accomplishment. Definitely one of my goals coming into this year.

Harden: It’s a really big deal to me. It’s awesome to look out and say I was part of a select group of this entire county.

Putting on the pads one more time. It’s pretty much what everyone says, but it’s underestimated. It’s an amazing experience, high school football.

What is your favorite part about football?

Probably the brotherhood and the relationships you can build out of it. It’s super fun just coming out every day. You’re meeting new people or staying with the same people.

It’s a great bonding experience.

Definitely winning the state championship.

Freshman year, the Tritons went 10-0 after our head coach told us we’d be lucky to go 2-8. That was a pretty good one.

Girls Soccer on Top of League San Clemente continues to go unbeaten and relatively untouched.

The Tritons (14-1-4, 3-0-1) are unbeaten through the first run of the South Coast League and are on a seven-game unbeaten streak from their only loss of the season, 2-1, against Los Alamitos in the Excalibur Tournament on Dec. 27.

San Clemente has only allowed two goals in league, their sixth and seventh allowed all season, with Kelsey Bland collecting two shutouts. Bland had a nine-save shutout against Aliso Niguel on Jan. 16.

If Langland finds the podium, she would be the youngest Olympic snowboard medalist to date.

Langland, called “the up-and-coming face of slopestyle,” won the first X Games big air competition last year in Aspen. She also took bronze in slopestyle at the 2016 X Games in Aspen.

In 2016, Langland competed at the Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. She finished eighth in slopestyle and ninth in the halfpipe.

ALBERDINA PETRONELLA JOHANNA “DINY” BRUINSMA. (90) Born May 7th, 1927 to parents Jan and Gelske Van Kampen in Sneek, Friesland, The Netherlands. Diny was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, and son Jan. Also sisters Jean, Alice, Grace and brothers Nico and Jan. She is survived by sisters Mies and Jeanette, children: Elsa Bruinsma (David Alban), Paul Bruinsma (Pamela) and Rosa Barrie (Matt Gillis), grandchildren: Anneke and Juan Barrie, Paul Daniel Bruinsma, Amber Rodriquez (Adam), Ashley Churchill, all who lovingly called her Oma, and many cousins and dear friends.

At an early age, Diny excelled in gymnastics and volleyball during her school years. Her happy childhood was interrupted by World War ll. The tight knit family grew very close and they helped their father transport documents by bicycle for the “underground” of which their father belonged. The girls were never caught or questioned and were successful in helping

many people. After the war, Diny worked for H&M Department Store before immigrating to California with her family in 1955. That same year she met her husband Paul, started a family, and began to happily raise four children. Her hobbies included tennis, bridge, knitting, needlepoint, and sewing. Diny loved to spend many Sundays at Sunset Beach with her family and friends.

Diny became a widow in 1981 and moved from their home at Valley View Farms in La Mirada to Dominguez Hills. She continued to enjoy traveling with her family and friends. In 1998 she moved to beautiful San Clemente and was welcomed with open arms to Shorecliff Terrace. She enjoyed participating in water aerobics and get-togethers in the clubhouse with her wonderful neighbors. In 2016 she moved to San Clemente Villas By The Sea. Diny loved it there immediately and the exceptional staff took excellent care of her.

Diny had a wonderful spirit and life. We, as her family, take peace in knowing a truly beautiful life was lived and are proud to call her our Mom. LOVE ALWAYS

Best Surfers, Worst Schedule San Clemente and Dana Point are a hotbed for America’s top surf talent, so why does the area remain largely ignored by the WSL?

oming off of a huge year, Orange County will see three surfers— Kolohe Andino, Pat Gudauskas and Griffin Colapinto—repping the bear republic on the WSL’s Championship Tour (CT) in 2018. Colapinto finished the year with a Triple Crown title, something no surfer from the West Coast has ever accomplished.

Unfortunately, the up-and-coming kids from California on the WSL Qualifying Series (QS) are going to have to wait a couple of months before they can compete in local waters. And for those who live in San Clemente or Dana Point, more road time is a fact of life. When the WSL announced the 2018 Championship Tour and Qualifying Series schedules, they were decidedly void of any local flavor.

The annual Hurley Pro and Swatch Pro have been canceled, traded for a contest at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California—300 miles away, right in the middle of California’s cattle country. And at this point, it doesn’t appear a conciliatory QS contest at Lowers will land on the schedule this year either.

The first QS contest in California is the Jack’s Pro in the middle of March. As far as valuable rating points go, it’s fairly lowrated, but may be good for kick-starting a campaign. The next contest isn’t until June, the Shoe City Pro, again in Huntington Beach. And the WSL is back in Huntington one more time at the end of July for the U.S. Open of Surfing, the highest rated surf contest to hit mainland shores.

Come fall, there’s the Pismo Beach Pro in Central California and the Cold Water Classic in Santa Cruz. The Shoe City Pro, the Pismo Beach Pro and the Cold Water Classic are all listed as “tentative,” so they remain up in the air. Other than that, there are a couple of stops in Virginia and North Carolina. All told, the United States is severely underserved by the WSL schedule.

The rub is that right now California’s enjoying a boom in the talent department.

eet the latest multitalented surfer to put a stitch in the Hoffman family tapestry—Dana Point’s Indie Hoffman. Graceful on a longboard, stoked to roll around on a skateboard, and not half bad in the shaping bay, the 11-yearold is carrying the family’s passion for the ocean into the next generation.

“My great-grandpa, Walter, once told me that the Hoffman name in surfing is relying on me to keep it going, and it makes me feel so happy to be sharing the love of surfing with everyone I meet,” Indie said.

Every week we have kids from the South Orange County area winning WSL pro juniors, NSSA contests, WSA contests, USA surfing contests and all the other great specialty events that are out there for groms these days. Looking at the results every week is staggering, or maybe inspiring is a better word because behind every successful kid is a great family, and San Clemente and Dana Point are consistently producing some of the top talent in the country, not to mention the world.

Yet, there’s no WSL involvement in the area as of right now. Three contests in Huntington? That’s all the biggest market in surfing can muster? I know a lot of locals who are happy to see the Lowers contest go. It takes a couple weeks of the autumn surf season out of play, but on win in the girl’s longboard division and a finals appearance in the girls shortboard division. She also recently got the opportunity to shape a board with Capo Beach’s craftsman Josh Martin, son of late Hobie master board builder Terry Martin.

“Josh is an amazing shaper, and his father shaped boards for my great-grandpa, my great-aunt and a few other greats in my life,” Indie said. “Watching, learning and helping him shape my board really showed me that a lot of work goes into a surfboard.”

At the end of the day, the same things that motivated and inspired her greatgrandpa are what’s driving Indie’s passion.

“The days we all surf as a family are my favorite. I love teaching my little brother.

Seeing all of us on a wave together is pretty magical,” she smiled. SC

the flip side, every year our local groms have the opportunity to come down to the cobblestones and watch their favorite surfers do their thing. It shouldn’t be underestimated the impact that can have on a young person’s life.

When I was young, my family lived in Northern California and my folks would take me to Ocean Beach in San Francisco every time the Bud Pro Tour came around. I’ll never forget Matt “Archy” Archbold getting out of the cold, turbulent waters in a purple, short-sleeve Lanty wetsuit. This was before the tats, when his hair was long and he was just this radical, mysterious personality. Up on the boardwalk he was standing with some friends. He looked at his wrist, and said, “Dude, I got my…watch ripped off out there.”

I was probably 12 and will forever remember thinking how gnarly Archy was because he got his watch ripped off. Seems petty now, but he became my favorite surfer thereafter. Twenty years down the track, I was fortunate enough to still live the dream and work at SURFER Magazine. Interviewing the late world champ Andy Irons, I asked him who his favorite surfer was.

“Archy, hands down,” he said. “He was so radical.”

Turns out, both of us were impressionable young groms when Archy came into our lives. He inspired Andy to go out, smash the establishment and win three titles. And I’m sitting here today writing these words partly because of that chance encounter so long ago.

The point is that when it comes to producing talent and getting people stoked on surfing, there’s nothing better than experiencing it firsthand. Webcasts are great, but smelling the wax and seeing the drama unfold before a kid’s eyes is the stuff memories are made of, and who knows where that may lead. SC
