Five things San Clemente should know this week Local Student Partners with JUST Water for Sustainable School Program THE LATEST: Team Zissou, an environmental club at San Clemente High School, has secured a partnership in its efforts of promoting sustainable products with JUST water, a company that produces biodegradable water containers.

A pilot program introducing the containers will take place at San Clemente High School as well as Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) schools Tesoro High School, Ladera Ranch Middle School and Shorecliffs Middle School.

Jackson Hinkle, the president of Team Zissou, said as the club’s plastic-free campaign, #PlasticFreeCUSD, caught the attention of JUST water, ideas began flowing from there.

The bottles are made from paper and the caps are made from sugar.

“JUST water and Team Zissou came from an organic relationship stemmed by Team Zissou President Jackson Hinkle and JUST water co-founder Jaden Smith,” said JUST CEO Ira Laufer. “…Team Zissou started working closer on their mission to reduce single-use plastic in their school with the JUST water team. Coincidentally, Kristin Hilleman, director of Food and Nutrition within (CUSD) also had her eyes on JUST water as another way to bring sustainability into her program.”

Students will be given JUST water at the cafeteria lines, but they can opt for the plastic bottle option, Hinkle said.

As Issa Announces Departure from the 49th, Congressional Primary Race Takes Shape THE LATEST: At a rally in June in San Juan Capistrano, one of many GOP politicians hosted in 2017, Rep. Darrell Issa, CA-49, did not hesitate to say he would run again for the Congressional seat he’s held since 2001.

That changed on Wednesday morning, Jan. 10, when a statement was released by Issa’s office in Washington, D.C. declaring he would not seek re-election at the end of his term this year.

“Throughout my service, I worked hard and never lost sight of the people our government is supposed to serve,” the statement read. “Yet with the support of my family, I have decided that I will not seek re-election in California’s 49th District.”

San Clemente is part of Issa’s district that, since 2012, stretches from San Juan Capistrano down the coast to Solana Beach. The district has been a Republican stronghold since Issa won his first election. But Issa faced his stiffest competition last year, narrowly defeating challenger Doug Applegate, a Democrat based out of San Clemente. Issa won Orange County by 21 percentage points but lost San Diego County by 20 percentage points.

With the election of President Donald Trump, the political landscape changed dramatically over the last year. Many people in San Clemente beseeched Issa to

take action against the potential construction of a toll road through the city and to fight for access to affordable healthcare.

Issa’s decision to not seek reelection is the latest in a series of recent announcements by Congress members and senators who have also stated they won’t vie for their seats in November.

So far, eighth candidates have announced they will run for Issa’s seat. Four are Democrats: Applegate, Mike Levin, Paul Kerr and Sara Jacobs. The fifth is Jordan Mills of the Peace and Freedom Party.

Since the announcement, three Republicans have declared their intent to run for the 49th. The candidates include Dana Point’s Diane Harkey, who is the chair of the California State Board of Equalization; the San Deigo Union-Tribune reported Oceanside’s Rocky Chavez, currently the Assembly member of the state’s 76th district; and Joshua Shoonover, a patent attorney and engineer with a degree in chemical physics.

Although he is a skeptic of science on global warming, he recently opposed the Trump administration’s move to reopen offshore oil drilling along the California coastline.

Issa was also a proponent of expediting requests for public records and opening transparency of federal spending.

Locally, Issa attempted to pass bills on three separate occasions to have the spent nuclear fuel at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) moved offsite through amendments to the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982. None of them made it to the House floor.

His most recent piece of legislation targets highly skilled foreign workers who are not immigrants and would require these workers to have skills that are worth salaries of $100,000 or more and would eliminate higher education degree criteria.

THE LATEST: John Tengdin, a longtime advocate of San Clemente and nine-year Planning Commissioner, died at the age of 91 on Dec. 28 in Fountain Valley.

Tengdin served as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee and was a city liaison to the Downtown Business Association.

He was Chairman of the Planning Commission for at least three terms and he had a lot of input on the renovation of the Ole Hanson Beach Club. He was inducted into the San Clemente Dons, a local recognition group.

Tengdin joined the Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific fleet on the USS Kern after VJ-Day. John then enrolled at Purdue University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1949.

“He was inducted into Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi academic honorary fraternities. John was recalled by the US Navy for the Korean War from Dayton, Ohio and was assigned to Tactical Air Control Squadron Five, based at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego,” his obituary stated. “While stationed in San Diego, he met his future wife, Carol. After his second term of service, ET2 Tengdin returned to Kansas City in November 1951. He married Carol in Chicago, Illinois in 1952.”

John and Carol retired to San Clemente in 1987 where he lived the remainder of his life. John was active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) professional organization and, as a result of his work on electrical standards, he was elevated to fellow in January 2007, an honor, his son said, that is only given to the very best in the industry.

“He was very detail-oriented, focused on fixing things and processes,” his son, Richard Tengdin said. “Dad was very involved with writing the standards for the electrical power distribution.”

On Jan. 15, City Council member Lori Donchak planned to adjourn the City Council meeting in memory of John Tengdin.

“John was an unwavering force for good in our town,” Donchak said. “He and Carol touched so many places and hearts. His family and especially his grandkids were his pride and joy.”

“He was also involved in the San Clemente chapter of Rotary International, and was well-known for his corn shucking every Fourth of July, and he was inducted into the San Clemente Dons,” the obituary stated.

According to an obituary submitted to the San Clemente Times, John is survived by his brother Robert (Dorothy), children Thomas (Debra), Richard (Mary) and Elizabeth (Darrell) and grandchildren Conor, Dillon, Bridget and Amy. His wife, Carol, passed away in 2013. The family is asking in lieu of flowers to consider a donation to Casa Romantica or Music Mission Kiev, two charities John and Carol supported.—EH

San Clemente Resident Recounts Mudslides in Montecito THE LATEST: Bill McGowan, a San Clemente resident, was on a business trip to Montecito, staying at the Montecito Inn, when the devastating mudslides that impacted the city came flowing through.

Already ravaged by the Thomas Fire, California’s most devastating wildfire, the soil around the area had been covered in a waxy layer that occurs when plants burn. As such, large chunks of land and soil were displaced, causing massive mudslides in the area.

According to officials in Montecito, the death toll from the mudslides is now 20.

McGowan said he was woken by a fire alarm around 3 a.m. on Jan. 9. Soon after, he realized what was taking place.

“There was a gas main break about a quarter of a mile away. No power that we could see, but the gas main broke and there was a 200-foot flame,” McGowan said. “The water rose from about 2 feet to 8 feet quickly, and it was just really loud, like a freight train coming down.”

It wasn’t until daybreak that McGowan could see the true force of the mudslides.

He was a little lucky. His car was located in an area where the mud hadn’t consumed everything in its path. McGowan said after a few hours in the hotel, where 3 feet of mud had encased the lower level, people were getting hungry as food was not available at the inn.

The real shock came when firefighters and other emergency personnel pulled out a dead body that was unrecognizable from the mudslides.

“There wasn’t a lot of immediate devastation, but you started focusing and seeing there were cars in trees,” Mc-

Gowan said.

Eventually, after traipsing through a few inches of mud to a supermarket, McGowan said he was able to get some food and help.

“I never felt nervous or scared, until I woke up the next day and saw the aerial photos and the rest of the devastation,” McGowan said.

School District, Teachers Union Reach Tentative Contract Agreement THE LATEST: After more than a year of negotiations, the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) announced on Jan. 12 that officials had reached a tentative contract agreement with members of the Capistrano Unified Education Association (CUEA).

CUSD’s chief communications officer Ryan Burris said in a press release that the agreement “will provide the stability of a three-year contract” and allow the

“district to continue to operate efficiently while remaining focused on the education of young people.”

Negotiations between CUSD and CUEA had been taking place in closed session since Oct. 13, 2017, and officially stalled back in June. In October, it was announced that mediation had also failed. The first fact-finding session for CUSD and CUEA took place on Dec. 12, and both parties agreed to participate in a second session on Jan. 12. During these sessions, a threeperson panel reviewed the arguments and proposals of each side.

Attorney General Selects Southern District of California for Crime Reduction Assistance Attorney General Jeff Sessions selected the Southern District of California to receive additional resources for the fight against violent crime, according to a Jan. 5 press release from the Department of Justice. The district will receive an additional Assistant U.S. Attorney to focus exclusively on violent crime, one of 40 new federal prosecutors in 27 selected locations throughout the United States.

Sessions continued to speak about U.S. border-related issues that have been at the center of the Trump administration’s objectives.

Recall Petitions for Three Council Members Receive Approval for Circulation Proponents trying to recall three City Council members have been cleared to begin collecting signatures.

Petitions to recall Council members Kerry Ferguson and Derek Reeve received approval from the City Clerk on Dec. 21, and the petitioners attempting to recall Pam Patterson received approval on Dec. 22.

The notices of intent to recall Ferguson and Reeve were initially submitted to the City Clerk’s office on Nov. 21, and the petition for Patterson was submitted on Nov. 27. All three Council members have filed responses.

Now that the City Clerk’s office has verified that the proposed recall petitions meet all the requirements of the California Elections Code, the proponents have 120 days to collect the signatures of 20 percent of the city’s 19,273 registered voters—3,854 residents—for each petition.

This means that proponents looking to recall Reeve and Ferguson have until April 20 to submit their signatures, and the proponents seeking to recall Patterson have until April 23 (since the 120 days falls on Saturday, April 21).

If the recall petitioners succeed in collecting enough signatures, the City Clerk’s office has reported that the cost San Clemente Times January 18-24, 2018

for an at-large special election would range from $95,000 to $106,000.

Fiesta Association Kicks Off 60th Fiesta de las Golondrinas Season The San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association has officially kicked off its 60th annual Swallows Day Parade season.

The all-volunteer nonprofit organization hosts an array of events each year during the three-month Fiesta de las Golondrinas, which leads up to the Swallows Day Parade and Mercado Street Faire—one of the nation’s largest nonmotorized parades. Fiesta members play a critical role as leaders and organizers of the parade and the season’s events.

The next Fiesta event will be the annual Taste of San Juan on Feb. 8 from 6-9 p.m. at the San Juan Hills Golf Club.

In the meantime, the Fiesta Association is holding weekly meetings each Wednesday to prepare for the upcoming events and, of course, for the grand finale—the 60th annual Swallows Day Parade and Mercado on March 24. Meetings take place at the Nydegger Building, located at 31421 La Matanza Street in San Juan. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for socializing and refreshments, and meetings generally run from 7-8 p.m.

This year’s parade theme is “Diamond Trails & Swallows Tales.” The Fiesta Association announced in October that the 2018 Parade Grand Marshal will be Steve Oedekerk, a Hollywood director and comedian who lives in San Juan and is known locally for his continued work with developers to bring a boutique Kimpton hotel—the Hotel Capistrano— to the downtown area.

“The issue is that influenza, unlike measles or other viruses, mutates at such a fast rate, and there’s a time (between flu seasons) that we take our best educated guest about what we’re going to see (which strain of flu) in the next season,” Gohil said.

Flu shots are only as effective as the strain they’re made to protect against. Last year, the CDC reported about 60 percent of the vaccinations were effective against the flu, while this year, the flu vaccine may be anywhere from the low 30s to about 10 percent. That could be one component as to why this year’s outbreak is more widespread than in past years.

Despite these figures, Gohil said it could be that this year’s flu season peaked early, and there could be fewer-thanaverage flu cases reported in late February and March, when the flu season is typically at its worst.

“The whole timeline shifted, and we may see the overall same flu numbers to the end, I’m not sure,” Gohil said. “We’ll have to see how this all plays out.” SC

High density of flu cases inundates local health facilities

A

n uptick in reported influenza cases has swept through California the past couple of months, hitting much earlier than typical outbreaks that are expected each year.

Since October, numerous urgent care facilities and hospitals have seen large numbers of people reporting symptoms and testing positive for the flu virus. Many pharmacies have run out of certain flupreventative and treatment medicines due to the influx.

“Influenza reports, predominantly the strain called ‘AH3N2,’ continued to increase in Orange County through week 52 (week ending Dec. 30), but may be decreasing in cases in the past week,” according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). “The recent number of reports have been higher than any flu season in the past five years.

Twenty-eight (28) severe cases, including 12 children and six deaths, have been reported this season.”

According to CDPH figures published last week, Orange County saw its largest number of reported Influenza A cases since October, which was approximately 350. At its peak in March of 2016, the number of cases totaled 375 for one week.

Although the number of reported deaths and cases related to influenza is higher than years past, officials said this could be the peak of the season before residents see the disease start to recede.

The local effect

Colin Jairam, M.D., chief medical officer and owner of Hybrid MD Urgent Care in San Clemente, said he has seen large numbers of patients coming to his facility with flu symptoms, and many of the patients have tested positive for the virus.

“My last patient I just saw tested positive for Influenza A,” Jairam said during a phone interview on Jan. 12, “and yesterday we had two positive tests, and the day before two or three. We’re running out of our influenza tests, and I’m trying to budget it out. We are seeing a huge amount.”

Greg Moreno, M.D., an emergency physician, medical director and the owner of MedHero Advanced Urgent Care and Telemedicine, echoed the trends reported

by Hybrid MD Urgent Care.

“We’re definitely hitting higher numbers than last year,” Moreno said. “By all accounts, it’s a bump in patient numbers.

We’re trying to identify those patients who are at a higher risk to the disease, such as people with weaker immune systems.”

In some extreme cases with patients older than 65, Moreno said they have administered IV fluids to stave off pneumonia, which can develop while being infected. He said they haven’t sent anyone to the emergency room yet for flu symptoms.

At Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach, the nearest facilities to San Clemente with emergency rooms, the demand for treatment has been comparable.

“We are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of patients coming into the emergency department with flu-like symptoms,” said James Keany, M.D., a board-certified emergency physician at Mission Hospital, through a prepared email statement. “As always, our primary focus in the emergency department is to care for patients with medical emergencies in a timely manner. Patients who do not have a true medical emergency should call their primary care doctor if they have concerns about their symptoms. Many patients recover from the flu without medical help.”

Officials with Mission Hospital said the hospital “isolates all patients with influenza according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines on both of our campuses (Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach) and the volume of patients in isolation has increased consistently with the increase of influenza in the community.”

Medicine shortage

Pharmacies are seeing supplies of Tamiflu, a flu-fighting medicine that works if taken within 48 hours of symptoms appearing, dwindle in the wake of the virus as well as shortages of flu shots.

Eugene Medley, Pharm. D., owner of Sea View Pharmacy in north San Clemente, said the demand for flu medicine is consistent with peak seasons, but the demand has come much earlier than past seasons.

“There is a shortage of sorts, and it’s been a supply chain distribution issue.

We’ve seen it affect our patients here as well,” Medley said. “Today, we have some (Tamiflu). We don’t have a ton of it, but I was able to…buy the amount that I was allowed to purchase. The distributors are trying to shuffle their inventories to the areas that are experiencing the epidemic.”

Hospital officials said they have not experienced shortages of Tamiflu, but healthcare providers said that could change if demand continues to rise. Wait times and numbers of patients examined at Mission Hospital locations were not available before press time.

The strain of flu we’re experiencing

The time it takes to produce flu shots sometimes overlaps the beginning of each flu season, for which industries try to anticipate what kind of strain-resistant vaccinations to produce. A subtype of influenza, “AH3N2” has been the predominant culprit of cases reported recently in California and around the nation.

According to the CDPH, more than 80 percent of the cases this season thus far have been H3N2, and the remaining percentage has been the subtype H1N1.

Dr. Shruti Gohil, M.D., M.P.H., the associate medical director of epidemiology and infection prevention in the division of infectious diseases at the University of California-Irvine Health, said the H3N2 subtype commonly makes up the highest number of flu cases each year.

Protect yourself against the flu Mission Hospital officials said patients should only use the emergency room for critical situations. People should seek medical attention from a primary care physician or urgent care first, as wait times for the emergency department can be lengthy.

Officials also recommended that people remain at home if they are experiencing fever or respiratory symptoms, even if vaccinations have been administered. People should remain at home until fever or other symptoms of the flu have decreased.

Certain people, ages younger than 5 and older than 65, are at a higher risk for developing influenza-related complications and might benefit from antiviral treatment.

Medication such as Tamiflu can reduce symptoms if taken within 48 hours of the beginning signs of infection, but health officials said it’s important for people who are at risk to get their flu shots.

Symptoms of influenza include: • Fever or feeling feverish/chills (not everyone with the flu will have a fever) • Cough • Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Muscle or body aches • Headaches • Fatigue • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in young children than in adults Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mission Hospital

The Will and the Way: WWII is Proof America can Overcome Obstacles

T

he Greatest Generation had many achievements, but among the most impressive was how decisively they committed and how quickly they implemented solutions to their crises. This adaptiveness not only saved the world, it improved the lives of every citizen of their time—and put in place the great America we live in today.

In the face of devastating unemployment, they began a national infrastructure program that built thousands of dams, subways, schools and parks. They repaired roads, bridges, train tracks and ports. It revolutionized our commercial capacity.

And they did it in less than the time our D.C. representatives have been talking about health care costs.

In the face of Nazi aggression, they stood up to totalitarian terrorists—together. All went. All served. They converted yacht, aircraft and auto factories into military plants overnight, producing hundreds of millions of jeeps, bombers and battleships.

That Yankee ingenuity seems to be overwhelmed by the current resistance to change that crippled other great nations in the past. Somehow, Americans in 1945 could refit their industry from tractors to tanks in nine months, but converting gas

guzzlers to electric cars is going to take 20 years. A generation ago, we thought big, built bold and did well by doing good.

And why not? As a nation and as a city, shouldn’t we look to lead the world? Why shouldn’t San Clemente be the first Orange County municipality to achieve 100 percent renewable energy?

By Jim Kempton it. Their conservative Republican mayor saved ratepayers a boatload of money doing it too. Our town would be environmentally clean, immune to regional power outages and rate-paying residents would be millions of dollars richer.

How about recycling our water—I mean all of it. California has a drought, and longterm rainfall will not likely improve. But what if San Clemente put two more stages of filter in our reclamation plant and made it as clean as rainwater, and cleaner than bottled stuff you pay $4 a gallon for now?

Residents would pay pennies for water and would be self-sufficient against drought, storm and aqueduct sabotage.

What if we offered innovative tech startups a tax-deferred, expedited program to

locate in our business park—in return for a share of their profits in five years? If just one of these companies hit pay dirt, the city government would be funded until the end of time.

Some of these things may not work.

But how Americans fixed the Great Depression—as then-President Roosevelt famously stated was to “take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.”

Since the mid-20th century, the world has looked to us for hope, but also for products, services, freedoms and concepts that made life better. America is the greatest country. California is the most innovative state. San Clemente is the best city. Why not try something?

Jim Kempton has tried to be many things: surfer, writer, restaurateur, marketer, publisher, soccer coach, executive, teacher, speaker, cook, curator, snowboarder, salesman, student and many others. Trying hasn’t always worked, but it’s kept him out of a lot of great depressions. SC

THE ONLY REMEDY FOR A NUCLEAR WASTE ACCIDENT IS PREVENTION GARY HEADRICK, San Clemente

Nuclear waste is an enormous issue facing our nation as the nuclear industry looks for a quick exit strategy. Our little “Spanish Village by the Sea” is about to get stuck with over 3 million pounds of it right at the ocean’s edge, yet it doesn’t even make our mayor’s list of issues for 2018.

Communities like ours are being told what they want to hear, but not the truth about how long we will be in harm’s way.

The reality is that much of this highly radioactive waste will remain too hot to be moved away from San Onofre for several decades. Meanwhile, Southern California Edison has opted for the most “commercially reasonable” solution, which will absolve them of huge liabilities, but leaves us with temporary storage containers that are not designed to last for as long as they need to be here. ‘INFLAMMATORY’ STATEMENTS CLOUD FACTS ON SONGS EDWARD “TED” QUINN, Dana Point

During the last four years that I have volunteered to serve on the San Onofre Community Engagement Panel (CEP), I have learned that most people in the surrounding communities agree on the importance of moving the used nuclear fuel offsite. I also have learned that there is quite a bit of inflammatory misinformation that clouds the issue. Let me offer some well-established facts, based on my 40 years of work in the safety of naval and commercial nuclear facilities.

SOAPBOX (Cont. from page 8) U.S. nuclear power plants have been safely storing used nuclear fuel for more than three decades. This excellent safety record includes the San Onofre nuclear plant, which stores its used nuclear fuel using robust, proven technologies.

These important facts were missing from the San Clemente Times coverage of the Dec. 30 protest in San Clemente of used nuclear fuel storage at San Onofre.

I recognize the factual errors by critics at the protest because I have heard them time and again during my service on the CEP. The panel’s diverse group of seriousminded leaders has devoted the large majority of time to one topic—advocating for constructive, feasible solutions to get the fuel off site at the earliest opportunity.

San Onofre will store all of its fuel in licensed, stainless steel canisters encased in concrete, a process known as dry-cask storage that has been repeated hundreds of times in the U.S. Not only is this a proven technology, we know that placement canisters facilitate transfer to off-site storage because the fuel must be in a canister to be accepted by a storage facility.

Southern California Edison has shared and sought public input in the development of plans to move the fuel from deep pools of water to dry-cask storage by mid2019. Preparations are underway to begin and progress reports are on the San Onofre website, www.songscommunity.com.

I encourage your readers to take advantage of well-established facts on that website before embracing the inflammatory rhetoric of critics. If we in the local communities can remain focused on the facts and focus on what’s important—getting the used fuel off site—we will do best to serve the interests of those who live, work and play in Southern California.

DISTURBING TRENDS WITH TOLL ROADS CORD BAUER, San Clemente

The last Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) joint board meeting uncovered two disturbing trends. First, it looks like someone associated with the TCA hired “political operative” Brian Harrington to stand up and speak against San Clemente residents. He also brought two friends with him to speak, and even filled out a speaker’s card for Mission Viejo Mayor Wendy Bucknum. She showed up late to the meeting and yet was the first to speak.

Unfortunately, it’s fairly easy to separate TCA money from illegal antics like this, so there are no fingerprints. For example, money from organizations such as the South Orange County Economic Coalition could be used and it would be difficult to trace. The TCA is a gold-level

member of the coalition’s Chairman’s Circle Investors. This is paid for with taxpayer money. What does this type of action say about the TCA, about their popularity, or about what level they will stoop to in order to stay in business?

Second, when we attend TCA meetings, we bring facts and professionals to speak.

The last meeting had an analysis of the latest “push poll” from the TCA by a 27-year veteran of the Gallup Corporation. Unfortunately, the valuable information was lost to the discussion of Brown Act violations and Brian Harrington antics.

Tony Hays, Ph.D., also stood up to speak about the fast-moving future of mobility. His information too was drowned out. We also had an update on the damage to St. Andrew’s church land shifting, just above the Pico interchange. This is the shape of things to come for any road that goes through San Clemente, as the land we’ve already mitigated in the city as open space is littered with soft soil and ancient landslide tailings. And the schools. Don’t forget the schools.

As TCA Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Chairman Ed Sachs has said in the past, three minutes isn’t enough to make these important points heard.

Will the TCA in 2018 continue on with its record of First and Fourth Amendment rights violations at TCA events, and of Brown Act violations during the meetings?

Or will the meetings simply be canceled, as happened often this year?

aul Thomas Anderson is arguably the most acclaimed and well-known auteur in modern American cinema, and his new film, Phantom Thread, is finally expanding after three anxious weeks in just LA and NYC. Anderson has had his share of variety on his resume, from the adult-industry-themed period piece Boogie Nights (1997) to the epic ensemble drama Magnolia (1999) to the intense character study of There Will be Blood (2007) to the quirky crime feature Inherent Vice (2014).

Now, he branches out to his most extreme piece to date: a British period film on the fashion industry.

In 1950s England, a high-class, respected fashion designer named Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) specializes in creating gowns and dresses. He lives as a bachelor with his sister Cyril (Lesley

Manville), who also works as his assistant.

That all takes a turn when he becomes instantly taken with waitress Alma (Vicky Krieps), who he quickly recruits to be his dress model for inspiration, as well as his lover.

Phantom Thread is about as far away from Anderson’s roots as he can get.

Beginning his career with movies about West Coast culture, he now impressively conveys the U.K. as a native Californian.

The best word to describe the film would be “elegant.” From all of the lush costumes, to the sweeping music score by Jonny Greenwood, to the cinematography, the film is visually stunning. But it all comes together with Anderson’s recognizable quirks and techniques. Day-Lewis and Krieps are a perfect match in acting, and Thread is perfect for a rather fancy movie night. s we begin a new year, we in the San Clemente Historical Society (SCHS) are beginning a project that has been on our drawing board for some years now. The recent purchase of video equipment has allowed us to begin a living history of San Clemente. Over the next several months, we will be interviewing, on video, long-time residents of our beautiful “Spanish Village by the Sea.” And, we need your help.

We will be seeking to preserve, and make available to the public, the firsthand accounts of life in San Clemente in decades past. In the future, we hope to post excerpts of these interviews on our website, include them in our quarterly events, produce our own historic videos and make the material available to future historians.

Invitations are being sent out to as many long-time local or former local residents as we can identify. This is where we could use the public’s assistance. Do you know

someone who can share their memories of life in San Clemente from decades ago?

They don’t have to be former officials, just regular folks who have lived or worked here.

Additionally, we are putting out a “call to the community” for any pictures you may possess of the people, places and events from our city’s past. We would like to copy these photos and add them to our collection. We’ll do all the work. You just point us in the right direction.

omething different. That’s the theme of Ulloo Forty-Two (OOOLoo), an artistic furniture company that has sprouted from Southern California.

Basically, whatever Ulloo Forty-Two’s creator Suzanne Currie thinks is appealing makes it onto the upholstery or the color scheme of the paint used on the furniture. Her ideas range from modern chic to Dr. Seuss-like patterns.

Currie, a San Clementean, has items like a camouflage-covered couch, a blue and pink chair, various modern designs and other visually stimulating designs.

“I looked at the camo couch for months trying to find something to do with it,” Currie said. “It’s kind of regal, and I like things that are edgy. I gravitate toward things that are different.”

She also described using a faux mink shall as part of one of her chairs.

Brothers Jeremy and Joshua Kirk of Kirk Custom Carpentry in San Clemente are helping their mother, Currie, and her business partner and friend of 17 years, Lise Abraham, create something out of their own designs.

“My mom does the artwork and the painting, and we build the furniture,” Jeremy said. “Some of the stuff she does is older furniture with new contemporary ideas that we collaborate on.”

On Jan. 11, Ulloo hosted a launch party in Los Angeles. This was the first time the brand of art-mix-with-furniture pieces had been on public display. SC

“I saw a change and wanted to make it happen,” she said.

Brill, owner and founder of Qēt Botanicals and a San Clemente native, started her business in 2013 in Wisconsin, but moved back to San Clemente in 2015.

“Most of our business is online, but we like to have a little something in the community where we live,” Brill said.

Qēt emphasizes the use of all-natural products mixed with botanical oils that are vetted through the Environmental Working Group, an organization that specializes in research of toxic chemicals and agricultural subsidies. Through the skin-deep database, people are able to track whether the products they use are all-natural or not. The list also includes products that may not be deemed safe for human use.

Nothing that goes into Qēt Botanicals products are synthetic, Brill said, who started using her own line after negative experiences with other products.

Qēt offers lines for all skin types, including oil, normal, combination and dry skin.

Some of the products are batched together in “skin suites” that come in packages for various uses.

They also offer products for hair and body such as bath melts, serums and shaving oils.

Sylvia Mizokami, the owner of Mizokami Advanced Circulatory Sports Lymphatic Massage Therapy, has been performing a specialized technique of massage therapy in San Clemente since 2012.

“The philosophy of the business is to help as many people as we can,” Mizokami said. “With as many autoimmune (diseases) that are out there, vessel flow is very important. A lot of people refer to us as lymphatic massage therapists, but what we do actually uses the MACSL technique.”

The MACSL technique stands for Mizokami advanced circulatory sports lymphatic, which Mizokami explained is a combination of sports therapy and massage techniques. She said the better the vessel flow, the better a lymph system works.

These therapeutic sessions are intended to clear out the lymph systems and Mizokami said they can help with therapy for cancer patients and people with severe illnesses.

Mizokami more than doubled its current space after moving to the new location. After a lengthy process going through the city’s Planning Commission, the massage business was approved and opened recently. SC

On Tuesday Evening Jan 9th Richard passed at his home in San Clemente, CA where he has lived for the last 50+ years. Boys Basketball All Square in League Standings After losing a heartbreaking leagueopener against Tesoro by one point on Jan. 10, the Tritons put out a strong effort to even their league record in a win over Trabuco Hills, 55-42, on Jan. 12.

Leading scorer Jacob Nemeth had no points through the first half, but the senior guard scored a game-high 18 points in the second half with 11 points in the fourth quarter. San Clemente (14-6, 1-1) dominated the boards once again by out rebounding Trabuco Hills, 34-13.

The first two rounds of league game days as of press time on Jan. 16 has shown the South Coast League to be as competitive as ever.

El Toro, with a 9-9 overall record, is the surprise leader with two wins over Trabuco Hills and Aliso Niguel, each a preseason league favorite with many returning starters. Tesoro (14-4, 1-0) is also on top with its opening win over San Clemente.

The Tritons (11-3-4, 2-0) opened league on Jan. 10 with a shutout of Mission Viejo, 2-0. Senior forward Tristan Weber and junior defender Liam Linas provided the goals while senior keeper Jake Carter made four saves for the clean sheet.

San Clemente burst open in the second game of the week for a 6-1 thumping of San Juan Hills on Jan. 12. Junior forward Quinn Richards potted two goals, and junior midfielder Blake Bowen put in a goal and added two assists. Weber, senior midfielder Leo Castro and junior midfielder Cesar Delgado also scored for the Tritons.

T

he San Clemente Triton Rugby Club is CIF ready … but in the wrong county.

On Jan. 11, the club received a fully stocked triage medical kit as a donation from Greg Moreno, M.D., owner of MedHero Advanced Urgent Care and Telemedicine in San Clemente. It was a big step toward becoming CIF compliant albeit while playing in the San Diego conference of the Southern California Youth Rugby High School Red Division.

“We were dominant (in Orange County),” San Clemente rugby coach Stuart Proctor said. “So, we took our rugby south to San Diego. We knew it was going to be a challenge. Part of being in that league is to be CIF ready.

SoCal Youth Rugby wanted to make sure the teams that played in the Red league were CIF compliant.”

A major and costly component of being CIF compliant is having that specific medical kit.

“The minimum cost is $1,500,” Proctor said. “That was definitely a notch above what we usually supply. We haven’t needed it terribly, thankfully.

It was above and beyond what we’ve needed previously.”

Proctor, a Scottish ex-pat who runs a business assessment service by day, didn’t have the medical expertise to know where to start on the kit. That’s where Dr. Moreno came in.

“I’m not a medical person, so I’m not even familiar with what most of this stuff is,” Proctor said. “Initially (when Dr. Moreno was contacted), it was to go through the inventory list. At some point during the conversation, he kindly offered to cover the cost.”

With CIF compliance, the next step Page 21

for many of the schools in the San Diego conference is CIF sponsorship. It would be quite an accomplishment for the San Diego schools.

“The school districts in San Diego County are warming up to the idea,” Proctor said. “It’s close. There’s a number of these high schools where it’s part of the physical education curriculum.

At Cathedral Catholic, because it’s a private school, it’s a school sport. At La Costa Canyon, it is a recognized sport.”

That warmth hasn’t travelled up the freeway and over the county line though. Rugby currently finds itself in a similar position to hockey now or to lacrosse a decade ago, but it’s the lacrosse angle that provides a path.

“Here in Orange County, we don’t have anywhere near the traction as they do down there,” Proctor said. “It’ll take a little more time and a little more acceptance. USA Rugby is modeling the high school infrastructure on lacrosse.”

Like lacrosse, it will take time, a grass roots movement and plenty of school board meetings, but there is a path.

Proctor said San Clemente athletic director John Hamro is supportive of the program, but without any movement from the Capistrano Unified School District, his hands are tied.

For now, Proctor can focus on the challenge of the tough San Diego league while continuing to foster a strong top-to-bottom program in San Clemente. There are 50 athletes on the boys varsity and junior varsity teams, and the club fielded its first girls team this season. Proctor said the San Clemente youth rugby program has over 200 kids involved.

The Session That Changed Everything How a chance encounter at T-Street between Shane Beschen, Martin Potter altered the course of surfing in local waters

range County’s southern flank is a haven for some of the world’s most talented surfers. From worldbeating residents such as Kolohe Andino and Griffin Colapinto to international WSL pros like Jordy Smith and Filipe Toledo, the performance level in the water these days has never been higher.

Salt Creek and Trestles have always been fertile spawning ground for surf talent.

Chris Ward and the Lost crew flew the flag around the turn of the century. And before that it was Kolohe’s dad, Dino, and cohorts like Christian Fletcher, Matt Archbold and Shane Beschen that rattled the wave-riding establishment. But when it comes to defining the modern, progressive era of surfing, perhaps the “aha” moment came on a small, playful day at T-Street in the early 1980s.

“It was during the summer, either 1982 or ’83, I must have been about 10 or 11 years old, I was surfing T-Street with my good friend Dan Kennedy,” Beschen said.

“The waves were fun, the sun was out and I was totally oblivious to the fact that my perception of surfing was about to change forever. I was paddling back out after catching a wave and this guy on a fluores-

cent green and yellow board was absolutely flying right at me. I started paddling faster to get out of his way, but he was moving at a speed I’d never seen. He then whipped the most radical backside 360 right in my face. Spray flew everywhere, I was momentarily blinded, left wondering if he had fallen. When I turned my head to see the outcome he was already down the line and into his next move.”

Mind blown, Beschen bolted to his friend Dan. “Did you f---ing see that?!” yelled Beschen.

Baffled, the two groms stammered for an explanation.

“Out back, we started to discuss the possibilities of who the hell that guy was.

Jim Hogan was also out so we asked him if he knew who it was,” continued Beschen.

“He laughed and said, ‘That’s Martin Potter. He’s from South Africa and he’s staying with me for a while.’”

As Beschen recalls, “That moment changed the course of San Clemente’s surfing history forever.”

hen asked what’s the best thing about surfing, Carolyn Sachse knows what’s up.

“It can turn a bad day good,” she says without hesitation.

An eighth-grader at Shorecliffs Middle School, Sachse is wise beyond her years.

Barreling into her third year on the surf team, she’s been surfing since the ripe old age of 4 and is as comfortable ripping a shortboard as she is gliding on a longboard. Lately, she’s decided to focus her

competitive energy on the longboard, and it’s paying off big time.

Sachse is leading the pack of Orange County’s middle school longboard girls on the Scholastic Surf Series rankings

“Pottz” was 16 he was already getting paid to travel the globe and compete on the world tour. This was during the time of Apartheid in South Africa and he wanted no part of it.

Pottz officially changed his nationality to the U.K. to avoid international sanctions, and despite the odds, his radical, no-holds-barred approach revolutionized the sport, and by 1989 he’d won the world title.

“As far as I’m concerned, Potter is the godfather of progressive surfing and he can basically take credit for all of the surfing success that has come from San Clemente,” Beschen said. “When he first started coming to our town he ignited a revolution like never before. A new standard of performance was laid out before us in real life, it was a tangible skill that we studied and used as our guideline for what surfing is all about. The speed and radicalness of his approach inspired us all.

“For myself, those days of Potter ripping San Clemente molded my perception of what good surfing is and how I would approach my technique and career,” Beschen continued, who would grow up to

after winning the first two contests of the year. And in the Western Surf Association contests, she’s been surfing up a division, competing in the 17 and Under group.

Keeping the vibe alive, she came away from last weekend’s contest at the Oceanside Harbor with a big win in her division.

Not just a success in surf, Sachse is also getting the job done in the classroom, which is sure to set her up for success with whatever the future may hold. Last summer she was one of only a handful of girls in South Orange County to receive a scholarship to attend a week-long science camp at the University of California-Irvine.

When Sachse grows up, her goal is to become a marine biologist, which sure as heck isn’t a bad job for somebody that loves surfing as much as she does. SC

contend for world titles and become Kelly Slater’s arch nemesis during the second half of the ’90s. “I remember times when I was at the school lunch tables and kids would be talking about Potter surfing T-Street, and I would run down there right after school, hoping to see that green and yellow board flying through my local beach break.”

Ten years after their fateful first encounter, Beschen found himself surfing an expression session at a contest in France— facing none other than his childhood hero.

“I took off on a wave and launched a frontside air 360,” Beschen said. “It was still back in the beginning stages of progressive surfing in competition and the commentators were going crazy in French. I paddled back out and Potter turned toward me and said, ‘Hey, go easy on me grom.’”

“I looked at him apologetically and felt kind of embarrassed. All I could say was, ‘Sorry, but it’s kind of your fault, you’re the guy who started this whole thing,’” laughs Beschen. SC
