Five things San Clemente should know this week Professor of Geosciences Tells San Clemente to Be Prepared in Case of Earthquakes THE LATEST: Fault lines along the coast of San Clemente have been researched as having the capabilities of setting off a chain reaction of earthquakes near the coastline.

Neal Driscoll, Ph.D., a professor with the geosciences research division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California-San Diego, gave a lecture on Nov. 28 to residents.

Driscoll and a team of researchers combed the ocean for nearly a year using new sonar technology to map seismic activity and fault lines along the coastline, which found certain activity is not poised to cause higher levels of earthquakes than past research claimed. He cited research from the 1980s that claimed an Oceanside Blind Thrust was capable within a few dozen miles of San Clemente that wasn’t showing the same results under the new technology.

In February, Driscoll’s presentation summarized initial research showed the capabilities of earthquakes in the region and their proximity to San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) at a Community Engagement Panel meeting.

WHAT’S NEXT: Although the activity was found unlikely to produce earthquakes higher than a magnitude of 7.3 or 7.4, Driscoll warned that magnitude is capable of causing tsunamis that could heavily damage coastal developments.

If there were a chain reaction of earthquakes set off by the faults, that could cause an 8.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Los Angeles County—however, Driscoll said that would be the highest magnitude earthquake in the state’s recorded history.

Driscoll also spoke about fault lines that are located underneath inland areas that could also send shockwaves all the way from Temecula to Los Angeles.

Tim Brown Selected as New Mayor by City Council THE LATEST: At the Dec. 5 City Council meeting, Tim Brown was selected as the new San Clemente mayor and will lead the city through 2018. This will be Brown’s second term as mayor, having served his first in 2014.

“With our 90th birthday this year, I can’t think of someone better to usher that in and celebrate with the residents,” said outgoing Mayor Kathy Ward.

Brown has served in a number of capacities since being elected to City Council in 2010, most notably as the vice chairman of the Community Engagement Panel, a public forum board that discusses issues related to the decommissioning of SONGS. His City Council term ends in 2018.

Council member Chris Hamm, who was mayor in 2015, was selected as the mayor pro tem.

Amid some confusion, Steve Swartz was initially selected as mayor pro tem, but having reconsidered, Swartz said he was humbled to have been selected, but wanted another year as a Council member before stepping into the mayor pro tem role. Since 1987, the San Clemente City Council has chosen the mayor pro tem as the next mayor except for four times.

Ward, who now resumes her role as a City Council member, was celebrated for her efforts in trying to stop the current toll road proposals through San Clemente, a theme throughout her term. Several community members spoke about Ward’s term with appreciation for her work during 2017.

WHAT’S NEXT: Brown’s term started at

the Dec. 5 City Council meeting. City Council in San Clemente has close to the same authority across the board with the mayor serving as a master of ceremonies.

Outlier Outlets Signage Appeals Denied; Planning Commission to Discuss Color Schemes THE LATEST: Two appeals were brought before San Clemente City Council regarding the signage at the Outlets at San Clemente on Dec. 5, but they were not related to the entirety of the applications the Outlets has put forth.

One appeal was related to a declaration made by the Community Development director that the Outlets master sign program needed additional exemptions related to freeway oriented signs. The representatives for the mall said a court ruling had not invalidated its approval for 1.5-square feet per linear frontage for signs, but City Council denied the appeal in a 5-0 vote.

Another appeal was heard related to the banner, or temporary signs, currently at the Outlets regarding how long the temporary signs can stay up. The Outlets said they had the signs at the mall until a complaint was filed that they had been up longer than the 120 days the city allots to temporary signs per calendar year. City Council denied that appeal in a 4-1 vote, with Council member Steve Swartz dissenting, stating the signs had been up past the point of allowance.

Council members said they want to see the Outlets succeed, but those who voted in favor of denying the appeal said they did

THE LATEST: A street rehabilitation project that includes slurry seals, restriping as well as other pavement maintenance for $2.6 million was approved by City Council on Dec. 5. The project will take place on Avenida La Pata from Avenida Pico to Calle Saluda, on Avenida Vista Hermosa from Camino Vera Cruz to Pico, and along Pico from La Pata to Presidio.

WHAT’S NEXT: During the meeting, City Engineer Tom Bonigut said the report that stated the striping would be in the current street configurations was incorrect. The restriping will be slightly altered to make room for 2-foot buffers for bicycle lanes. A schedule for the maintenance and any potential closures was not provided in the report. Dunkin’ Donuts to Host Grand Opening Dec. 9 in San Clemente THE LATEST: Dunkin’ Donuts announced on Dec. 4 that it has opened its San Clemente location at 635 Camino De Los Mares.

A grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, and the first 500 customers who make a purchase of $5 or more at the location will receive one free custom San Clemente Dunkin’ Donuts tumbler. There will also be samples as well as snap photos with the Dunkin’ Donuts mascot, Cuppy.

“Local dignitaries will be invited to join in a ribbon cutting ceremony,” the release stated.

The franchise location is operated by Precision Hospitality & Development. The group has plans to open several additional Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in South Orange County and North Los Angeles in the coming years.

Frequent dwellers of State Parks eye new reservation system, policy changes

A

s summer crowds recede from South Orange County beaches, California State Parks and its patrons prepare for statewide and local changes that could affect more than campers attending the parks.

Brian Ketterer, executive chief of law enforcement and chief of Southern Field operations, helped clarify some of the rules for camping limitations at California State Parks.

Current camping policies allow people a 30-day stay limit per calendar year per site. No one can register in a single campground for more than 30 days per calendar year (Jan.1–Dec. 31). For example, a person could stay at Doheny State Beach for 30 days and then San Clemente State Beach for another 30 and so forth.

Some people at State Parks station their RV for the day, but then have to park somewhere else in the evening, as the parks close for day use at 10 p.m. People typically return early in the morning to find a spot. For year-round day pass holders, there is no limit to how many days they can enter a park.

One of these year-round day pass users, who wished to remain anonymous, said the Doheny State Beach parking lot is home to, “easily between 30 to 40 of us that are here every day.”

user and camper for over 15 years. Living in his 1984 Winnebago while traveling up and down the California coast, the retired school teacher and Navy veteran said he enjoys following the seasons.

“It’s been getting harder though, especially during the busy season. I’ve been ‘shoo’d’ away. I don’t have a lot of money and I really depend on the parks. I just try to keep moving, stay out of the way and under the radar,” Goit said. “To be honest, I don’t know what else I would do. This is literally everything I have.”

There are some parks that have sevenday consecutive stay limits during peak use, and the length of those limits are at the discretion of the superintendents for each park.

“Many, not all, parks have a seven-day maximum consecutive stay limit during peak use periods,” Ketterer said. “Peak use is prescribed by each district based on historical visitation trends and reservation data. Peak use is typically the high use months of the year and any holidays which traditionally have an influx of visitors wishing to utilize the park unit.”

There are also “Hike-N-Bike” passes that are first come, first served to provide 24-hour respite for bikers and hikers.

A new reservation system, Reserve California, will digitally track the number of days used by each registered camper.

The system is likely to be fully in place by the new year. Not all State Parks are linked into that system yet, and according to the website, more features will be added through March 1.

People will have to enter a profile and provide identification in order to register through the reservation system, which could make it easier for State Parks to track people who overstay.

“In the past, these policies were tracked by the individual park units,” Ketterer said.

(Cont.from page 4) Beginning in Los Angeles, Houser has spent months on foot traveling south toward Ocean Beach in San Diego. He said on occasion, he has stayed within the State Park system as he headed south, specifically Corona Del Mar and Doheny state beaches.

“It’s been great,” Houser said, “I get to wake up to the ocean. I’m meeting new people. I come and go as I please. Ever since I left Vegas and lost all my money, I’ve felt free. This (lifestyle) saved me.”

The free-flowing and undocumented nature of a nomadic lifestyle such as Houser’s, historically ingrained in the culture of many of California’s state parks, could be affected by the digitalized, and more organized, tracking system. Though, that doesn’t prevent people from sneaking in.

“Should a registered camper reserve or be found to be over the maximum stay limits, State Parks attempts to handle the issue at the lowest level,” Ketterer said.

“Our first course of action is to notify the user and provide them information, and block reservations while offering other locations where camping may still be available to the individual.”

Ketterer said if an overstay is noticed after the camper has registered, State Parks will meet with the camper, explain the issue and refund the remainder of their stay and require the person, property or vehicle to leave.

“Rarely does a park unit cite for illegal camping if a stay limit is violated,” he said. “Although the law provides a broad definition, a person may be cited for illegal camping or non-payment of fees or several Page 6

other misdemeanor violations of the law.”

Ketterer said State Parks still relies on “quality community policing” staff does on a daily basis within the campgrounds. He added State Parks is not working on new policies on the maximum stay limits for visitors.

“Our dedicated staff works diligently to make sure all park visitors enjoy their stay, whether it be for hiking, camping or off-highway vehicle use while following the rules each park has in place,” Ketterer said.

The new reservation system will likely eliminate any confusion, as park administrators at both Doheny and San Clemente State beaches gave conflicting answers as to the limits on days people can camp.

On a park-by-park basis, some areas are beginning to prohibit campers or RVs longer than 25-feet long. Surf Beach at San Onofre State Park and portions of Doheny State Beach have already enacted policies limiting where longer RVs can park.

Locally, the restrictions “apply to two areas; the southern portions of Doheny State Beach and the surf parking of San Onofre State Beach,” said Todd Lewis, the State Parks superintendent of the Orange Coast District.

Lewis said some of the peak days can’t accommodate the vehicles and their size could restrict access in and out of the areas.

“It needs to be a safe situation,” Lewis said. “We’re still refining the specific details.”

COA’s Holiday Music Festival Turns to Fundraiser

California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is now accepting applications for the California Boater Card. The card verifies that its holder has successfully taken and passed an approved boater safety education course. Once issued, the California Boater Card remains valid for an operator’s lifetime.

On Sept. 18, 2014, Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. signed into law Senate Bill 941, which prohibits the operation of motorized vessels in California without a valid boater card developed and issued by DBW. The new mandatory boating safety education law will go into effect Jan. 1, 2018. The law will be phased in by age. The first group required to take the exam are boaters 20 years of age and younger. Each year after January 2018, a new age group will be added to those who are required to possess a valid card. By 2025, all persons who operate a motorized vessel on California waters will be required to have one. The cost of the lifetime card is $10, and all the money goes toward developing and operating the program. By law, DBW cannot profit from the program.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, Community Outreach Alliance (COA) will host its Holiday Music Festival at 1050 Via Negocio in San Clemente. Admission will be a children’s toy to be donated to Family Assistance Ministries’ Christmas party for children in need.

This event is now a fundraiser for Brooke Besikof, a 14-year-old singer/songwriter who was recently diagnosed with stage-four leukemia. A Go Fund Me page has been established for Besikof.

City’s Short-Term Lodging Laws Prove Effective against Problems

T

he city of San Clemente is uniquely gifted with a wealth of assets. While its famous beaches, historic properties and engaging downtown easily come to mind, some of the greatest attributes of the city are not quite so obvious. One of these is the many family-oriented and attractive residential neighborhoods, not always common in coastal cities. These are places residents can be proud to call home. And it is the combination of all of these assets that makes San Clemente a world-class city in which to live, work and play.

However, due in large part to the attractiveness of our coastal neighborhoods, the city has also been a favorite location for businesses seeking to exploit our incredible coastal resources and hometown charm.

Beginning a few years ago, I witnessed the transition in many of the city’s most cherished neighborhoods. Our residential neighborhoods were quickly being overtaken by commercial lodging businesses. For example, in 2010, there were approximately 50 short-term lodging units (STLU) in the city. By the beginning of 2016, there were 512.

Though these problems were not new to California, the experiences of other coastal cities that were similarly affected did not provide a clear solution. Very obvious was the immediate need to take action to ensure the safety of our neighborhoods

Over the last few years, there have been a number of challenges and threats to our “Spanish Village by the Sea.” Other than voicing our concerns, we have had little to no control of such matters as San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), the loss of our local hospital, the proposed toll road, sober living homes and rising sea levels (sorry, San Clemente Times, there is no debate amongst scientists as to what the cause of sea level rising is: global warming). Compared to these problems, my complaints are a minor annoyance involving the lack of individual responsibility and are easily corrected and cost nothing to rectify.

At a recent City Council meeting, city staff presented statistics on the state of the short-term lodging industry in San Clemente today as compared to a year and a half CITY COUNCIL ago, as well as the city’s CORNER enforcement of the new

By Tim Brown regulations. The statistics show that the high of 512 STLUs in 2016, the city has reduced the number to 225 and has found the new permitting process successful at locating new STLUs only in the areas approved for short-term residency.

On the enforcement side, city staff are now able to aggressively pursue properties that are ineffectively operated and negatively impacting the neighborhoods they are located in. Since the adoption of the ordinances, city staff have received 262 complaints, which turned into 136 enforcement cases regarding violations of the STLU

text and drive (please pull over if it is that important), something we all see many times each day. Secondly, car blinkers are meant to be used to notify others of your intent to turn and a courtesy to others (we are not able to read you mind), otherwise they would not be standard equipment in all cars. Lastly, no one wants to see or step in your dog’s feces (take a minute and pick it up; bags and depositories are common along most walking paths). Thanks, San Clemente, for being the best place to live.

regulations, resulting in many citations for noncompliance. Additionally, the city has revoked two STLU operating licenses from property owners receiving three or more citations at their STLU. Along with this enforcement, the city has actively responded to neighborhood nuisances stemming from boarding houses.

Though these uses still affect some residential neighborhoods, what is clear at this point is that the city has effective tools in place to deal with problem properties. While not every violation turns into a citable offense, the city is committed to ensuring the enforcement of the protections put in place to maintain the high quality of our residential neighborhoods.

The Miramar Theater, located at the corner of Avenida Pico and North El Camino Real in the historic North Beach area of our town, has been closed since 1992 and is desperately in need of rehabilitation. The Casino San Clemente and Ole Hanson Beach Club, two nearby historic landmarks, have both been wonderfully restored, so the neglected Miramar property really stands out. Previous proposals for the Miramar site were based on demolition. The current proposal will leave the historic buildings on their original footprint with little alteration and little addition. This is important because it retains the historic integrity of the property.

Legitimate concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact on parking in the public parking lot and residential streets nearby. Parking studies indicate adequate parking is available to accommodate the proposed project and the city will implement a plan to provide more marking if it is needed in the future. www.sanclementetimes.com

OC DIRECTOR SHOULD CHANGE POSITION ON TOLL ROAD EVA O’KEEFE, San Clemente

I am really disappointed and frankly quite shocked at your comments during the Orange County Transportation Authority Board Meeting regarding your constituents in San Clemente, that we should be taken with a “grain of salt” and that we are a “small group.”

I have submitted to you over 11,000 combined signatures (digital and wet) from your constituents opposing the toll road and the takeover of Los Patrones by the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA).

You tout the “survey” as an indication that the majority of Orange County supports the toll road including San Clemente residents. The survey conducted was absolutely biased to give a specific answer and minimized the impacts of the toll road through our communities. The survey started with a false premise that population was going to increase by 400,000 in 10 years. You know that figure is not true and is not supported by California State University-Fullerton or the census.

I was one of the people called on that survey and I had a hard time understanding how to answer the questions. I can only imagine a person in Irvine with no knowledge of the situation when given a choice of a “through way” (never men-

tioning a tollway) going through open space without any mention of proximity to schools, homes, churches, parks for disabled children, (failing to mention the completion of Interstate 5 and La Pata) or the absolute worst scenario situation of the widening of the I-5 freeway by taking 1,000 homes and businesses.

Again, we are not a small group. We are the majority of taxpayers of San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Ladera Ranch and Rancho Mission Viejo.

The toll road is redundant and wasteful.

RESPONSE TO TODD SPITZER’S LETTER TRAVIS MANN, San Clemente

I am writing in response to Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) director and Orange County District Attorney candidate Todd Spitzer’s letter in the Nov. 30Dec. 6 edition of the San Clemente Times.

In his letter, Mr. Spitzer states, “The truth should be told,” regarding the positions he and his opponent have taken in the race for OC District Attorney. However, after making his bold proclamation that “the truth should be told,” Mr. Spitzer goes on to declare absolutely nothing regarding his position on the San Clemente toll road boondoggle, other than vaguely referencing his “actions (as a TCA director) to advance transparency and community involvement in the government process,” and his work to “understand your issues,” whatever that means. So, what is it, Mr. Spitzer? What is your position on the toll road? Because I agree, the truth should be told—and you haven’t done that yet.

magery of a colorful wrestler may be a robust description for a hotdog, but the combination of flavor in the Luchadore Dog by JD’s Kitchen and Bar is of formidable strength.

Much like the various items on JD’s menu, the Luchadore Dog is packed with toppings and doesn’t feign its intent. The dog is loaded with its sidekick, bacon, and teams up with grilled shishito peppers and onions, slathered in guacamole, cooling garlic aioli, cotija fresco and cilantro.

Supposedly, the only arch nemesis to this

legion of food is gravity, as the weighted Luchadore’s toppings slide off easily toward your face when tilting it downward—a welcome dog-pile, if you will.

At the Movies: Films to Fit the Christmas Season

hat makes a movie a Christmas essential? Well, of course, they usually revolve around the Christmas season, like Miracle on 34th Street (1947), National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Love Actually (2003). Then there are Christmas classics that only feature the holiday in a single act of the film, like Holiday Inn (1942), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Bells of St. Mary’s (1945) and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). Next are the traditional popular movies set during December where the plots don’t have anything to do with the holiday, but are still viewed during the month: Trading Places (1983), Lethal Weapon (1987) and Die Hard (1988), to name a few.

Going even farther, there are the movies that have absolutely nothing to do with Christmas that people still enjoy watching during the holiday season: The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Sound of Music (1965), Mary Poppins (1964), etc. I think that most people like to watch movies that make them feel good during the last couple of months of the year because it reflects the spirit of the season. That is precisely the reason why Pixar wisely releases their films during Thanksgiving weekend and why their latest, Coco, is currently killing it at the box-office three weeks into release.

So on a surprisingly dry week of new releases, I would recommend revisiting your favorite movie to watch during the holidays or check out Coco, Lady Bird or Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in theaters if you haven’t already. SC www.sanclementetimes.com

Head of Class Chemo Beanies of San Clemente designs products for cancer patients

L

oss of hair during chemotherapy treatment is one of the burdens many cancer patients face.

Adrienne Metz, owner and founder of Chemo Beanies in San Clemente, designs a product that aims to ease the anguish experienced with various symptoms related to cancer treatment.

Metz’s aunt, Danielle, was diagnosed with breast cancer about seven years ago, and she recently died after her long battle, Metz said. Another aunt of Metz was diagnosed sometime after Danielle, and that’s when she started to put her ideas to work.

“Seven years ago, my aunt had breast cancer and lost all of her hair, and she has long, black, curly hair,” Metz said.

“She was without hair for two years, and during that time she was trying to wear wigs and scarves, but they didn’t really work. The scarves would fall off or slip.”

Metz said her aunt became frustrated and settled with being bald during her chemotherapy treatment.

“So many women have that reaction; they wonder what’s going to happen to them physically,” Metz said.

“We decided we were going to make her something that fit all the problems.”

Choosing the right fabric and elastic components was critical to the design, Metz said. She wanted to create something for her ailing family members that wouldn’t get too hot or discomforting. Metz said Danielle became very sick during her treatment, so she flew to her hometown of New Orleans to drop off some samples to tweak the final design.

“We were making adjustments to the design and trying out different things, and basically what became of it was just a simple head cover that you can slip on and it stays in place and covers the back of your neck,” Metz said.

The designs are meant to be stylish as well as utilized as a way to protect the scalp.

Chemo Beanies has been successful with getting exposure. Metz said the product is now sold in 600 retail stores and offered at hospital gift shops and the Mayo Clinic.

Many of the beanies are donated to local causes, but Metz said she has worked with hospitals and received a grant to supplement the business when JP Morgan Chase & Co. offered funding to small businesses that help people a few years ago.

developer, is designing a children’s beanie that will be released in 2018.

“So many times we’ve had requests for children’s Chemo Beanies, and the timing hasn’t been right, but Natalie can help me develop the project,” Metz said. “In the past, we’ve had production runs where something came out too small, so we ended up donating those to St. Jude’s Children’s (Research) Hospital.”

housands of people crowded the street for the annual Puttin’ on the Glitz on Avenida Del Mar on Dec. 2 for an evening of community holiday celebrations.

Many of the local shops and vendors stayed open later than usual for patrons.

Snow was dumped on the lawn of the San Clemente Community Center to construct a sledding hill, and performances were conducted by Las Palmas Elementary School and The Arts Project of Orange County, along with other entertainment throughout the block.

Christmas at the Casa also took place at Casa Romantica, where children could tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas, and various other holiday happenings occurred. SC

OBITUARIES KAY TIPTON DAVIDSON Kay Tipton Davidson quietly passed away the morning of November 26th in San Clemente, with her beloved husband John by her side. Born February 23rd, 1937, in Peoria, Illinois, Kay moved with her family—father Paul, mother Mildred, and sister Nancy—to Oakland, CA in 1942. An outgoing, lively student, Kay graduated from Castlemont High School in 1955. In 1960, she married John Davidson, a naval aviator. They moved to Orange County in 1964, settling in San Juan Capistrano in 1972, where they raised three children.

Kay loved to travel, volunteer, host parties, and laugh. She doted on her five grandchildren and was a dear friend to many. Kay is survived by her husband John; her sister Nancy Lacy, of Austin, Texas; and her three children and their spouses: Mike and Karla David-

son, of Carlsbad; Noelle and Tom Vogt, of Chino Hills; and Chris and Carolyn Davidson, of Long Beach.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, December 9th, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 200 Avenida San Pablo, San Clemente, CA 92672. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made on behalf of Kay Davidson to the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation. [www.jdrf.org] FRANK EDWARD MOXLEY III With heavy hearts, we announce that Frank Edward Moxley III passed in Oak Glen after a prolonged illness.

Frank was born in Apple Valley, CA and raised in Yucaipa. He was involved in Key Club, Speech and on the varsity tennis team. He was also an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a degree in political science.

He was also a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He loved traveling, the beach, surfing, golfing, music and playing the guitar.

Frank owned an airfreight business after college and worked at Pan Am and Delta Airlines in Washington, D.C. as a senior crew supervisor and in operations. Frank and his wife Heather, established Cardvark Gifts in San Clemente and later SmokinWood-Chips

The Importance of Holiday Traditions with Family

his will be the fifth year that my children will be traveling home for the holidays, so the beginning of December is when I start making sure we can fit all of our holiday traditions in the short amount of time that we will be spending together.

Traditions are important, particularly in our fast-paced culture, allowing time to slow down and families to be grateful for cherished family time.

Traditions are enjoyable. We live in a fast-paced culture, and the anticipation of the holidays provides us with the comfort of time off and a relief from the stress of our everyday lives. Most traditions involve food and drink, nourishing body and soul. Traditions help create a family’s identity, forming positive bonds between family and friends. Intergenerational time allows for a break from electronics and time for children to learn family recipes, play games and to hear family stories. Reinforcing and nurturing family connectedness supports children’s respect for elders and encourages positive communication between family members.

Traditions remain constant and

provide reassurance to children that they have a safe place to share successes, failures and fears. Our holidays and times of rest follow seasonal patterns and help mark the passing of time while also allowing for reflection upon the past year. We all need traditions to reflect upon happy celebrations in the past and to reinforce family culture. Traditions lower the stress levels from our lives and help to prevent sadness and anxiety.

Year-round traditions are equally important to mental and physical health.

Calming nightly bedtime rituals not only help young people sleep better, but also help children feel valued as you spend this important time together each evening reflecting on the day. Adapting bedtime rituals as children become teens helps to maintain open, strong communication.

These rituals allow for a final check-in and may lead to some enlightening conversations with your teen.

One year I made the mistake of trying to change our traditional Christmas Eve fondue meal to a different family favorite.

This change was met with opposition from all and it was a mad scramble to gather the ingredients for the fondue meal. They all needed the leisurely meal of gooey warm cheese to spend time catching up. I learned to never try to change our holiday traditions and how important they have become to my nowadult children.

Dana Outrigger Performs Well at South American Canoe Championships

T

he six members of the Dana Outrigger Canoe Club that landed in Peru on Nov. 17 barely had time to shake off the jetlag before they hit the icy waters of the Pacific to compete against the best outrigger canoe paddlers on the continent.

The Americans had less than 12 hours after landing in Lima before they were competing in the South American Canoe Championships’ flagship event—a 14-mile, open-ocean paddle.

The local Dana Point-based team, which includes several San Clemente residents, acquitted themselves nicely with a 10thplace finish in a field of 17 boats. The local team had to rent a boat while in Peru, which slowed them down quite a bit.

However, the 14-mile race went off without a hitch for the Dana Outrigger team.

Clubs from Brazil and Easter Island got out to early leads and left a pack behind, which the Dana Outrigger team stayed in. Heavy swells ended up not factoring in much to the outcome.

“I thought we were respectable,” Dana Outrigger member John Skorstad said. “Everybody on our team really performed well.”

Team members Dave Brozowski and Brian Pesartic competed in the event’s mixed co-ed 6K race. Brozowski placed second and Pesartic took third.

The same Dana Outrigger team made the trip south for the championships in 2016, which was held in Chile. The trip is now becoming an annual tradition for the tightknit group. Next year, they plan on

competing in the 2018 edition of the race in Brazil.

Skorstad said the sport of outrigger canoe racing is becoming increasingly popular in South America. More outrigger clubs are making the journey to the event every year, he said, and the overall interest and skill level has noticeably increased.

But the competition is only half the fun for the local outrigger team. They always make sure to take a few extra days following the race to sightsee and explore.

This year, after completing the race on Nov. 18, the crew spent a week exploring the mountainous area around the city of Cusco. The group made hikes up to Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and Rainbow Mountain before returning stateside.

ollege football championship weekend was an exciting one. For those paying close attention, you might have noticed several familiar names and faces on the sidelines.

Seven former San Clemente High School football players were part of teams that put together winning seasons and are now bound for a NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision bowl game.

Here is a list of those players and their teams’ matchups, along with television viewing information (note: all times listed are Pacific Time).

Sam Darnold, Jake Russell and Jack Sears, USC: Darnold will quarterback the No. 8 Trojans against No. 5 Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl on Friday, Dec. 29 (5:30 p.m. on ESPN). Many thought the Buckeyes were worthy of consideration for the College Football Playoff. Darnold, Russell (a wide receiver), Sears (backup quarterback) and the Pac-12 champion Trojans are winners of their last five.

Riley Whimpey and Donté Harrington, Boise State: After losing to Fresno State one week prior, the Broncos came roaring back to defeat the Bulldogs 17-14 in the

Girls Soccer Dominates in Desert

The San Clemente girls soccer team turned in a dominant performance at the Desert Mirage Tournament over the weekend.

The Tritons (4-0-1) excelled on both offense and defense, winning all four games played by a combined 24-0 margin.

San Clemente beat Imperial, Twentynine Palms and Desert Hot Springs to reach the finals, where they beat Indio 4-0.

t’s safe to say that was the best three weeks of my life,” surmised Griffin Colapinto when the World Cup of Surfing was done and dusted.

It’s also safe to say that Colapinto’s not done yet. Last week, we reported on the 19-year-old San Clemente surfer’s bid to qualify for the 2018 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour—the biggest stage in surf. Well, what a difference a week makes.

Safely on tour next year, Colapinto went into the World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach with zero pressure on his shoulders. All he had to do was go out and surf. He ended up making the final alongside Lowers cohort, Kolohe Andino,

and now leads the Vans Triple Crown ratings as well as the WSL’s Qualifying Series ratings. Because he’s fronting the Triple Crown ratings, Colapinto will now get the opportunity to surf in the Mike Stewart Pipeline Invitational, and if he can pull off another miracle, he’ll get his first opportunity to compete in the prestigious Billabong Pipe Masters.

But wait, it gets better. Finishing runner-up at Sunset Beach to Santa Barbara stylist Conner Coffin, Andino is also in contention for the Triple Crown title. He’s sitting in second, 1,000 points behind Colapinto in the ratings. Because he’s already a World Tour competitor, he’ll get an automatic bid into the Pipe Masters,

which gets underway on Dec. 8.

“Sunset’s one of my favorite waves, and to have a friend like Griffin in the final, that’s pretty special,” Andino said.

Historically speaking, no competitive surfer from the San Clemente or Dana Point area has ever won the Triple Crown, so to have two guys sitting in first and second, that’s a huge deal. Most pro surfers consider winning the Triple Crown the next best thing to winning the world title. At the moment, the surf forecast for the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii appears fairly promising. Colapinto and Andino are both in a white-hot rhythm. Stay tuned, this is potentially about to get really good.

he local South County men aren’t the only one’s lighting up the WSL scoreboards lately. At the Taiwan Open World Longboard Championship, a whole crew of local women cross-stepped their way onto the international scene.

Saddleback surfer Lindsay Steinriede nearly went the distance, finishing runnerup to Hawaii’s Honolua Blomfield.

“I’m so stoked with making it to the final—the waves have been incredible today,” said Steinriede after the awards ceremony. “I’m really happy we powered through so many heats today and made the most of this pumping surf. This has been a great year with the two events, as it gives everyone more of an opportunity at success—and it’s just awesome for

longboarding. Seeing Honolua killing it this much at just 18 years of age is amazing, she put on an amazing performance in the final and I’m really happy for her. The surf today was unbelievable—definitely the best whole day of surf I have had in Taiwan; it’s an amazing place.”

Right behind Steinriede, Tory Gilkerson and Rachael Tilly both made the semifinals to keep the San Onofre tradition going strong. Tilly was the 2015 world longboard champ, and Gilkerson was the

2016 champ. Both know full well what it means to contend for a title. “(I’m) beyond stoked to have finished third here at the WSL Longboard World Championship,” Tilly said. “Stellar conditions and amazing performances from all the girls.”

“I look forward to next year and seeing what the future holds,” added Steinriede.

The Salt Life Midget Smith Memorial hit the sand with a healthy dose of winter swell in the water, and 10-year-old Bray stepped up to take out a tough final stacked with talent. Lately, Bray’s been spending a lot of time in the water working with former World Tour star and Brazilian legend Neco Padaratz, whose influence can be seen in the evolution of both Bray’s technique and his intelligence when surfing heats.

“I’ve known this kid since he was born.

Can’t count how many special moments we’ve had over the years,” wrote Padaratz on social media after Bray’s win. “Back then I didn’t know about his natural talent, but nowadays, I’m his coach and watching him succeed is pure joy, (it) is to live the dream again. You go, Makai. There is a bright future ahead of you.”
