She adds that having the VR room at school “opened up a whole new realm of creativity, ideas and things to look forward to and accomplish through art.”

Timmons, an advanced art student, has been accepted to Laguna College of Art & Design, and plans to major in game design.

Students are able to use the VR room by taking Luciani’s Drawing and Painting class. This enables students to utilize their traditional skill set digitally, while discovering new features and exploring the almost limitless possibilities of what can be done in the VR room.

Five things San Clemente should know this week City to Send Out Mailers for Beach Parking Refunds This Week THE LATEST: People who paid into the Beach Impact Parking Fees fund will receive mailers regarding the process to receive their money, after the city of San Clemente settled the final parts of its fiveyear-long lawsuit regarding the fund.

A judge determined in 2014 that because the fund had not been used to increase parking in San Clemente, the people who paid into it should receive their money back. The city appealed the decision and lost in 2015.

A separate issue arose that kept the fund from being distributed, but City Attorney Scott Smith said those issues have now been resolved.

“There were some loose ends in the Walker case in terms of implementing the judgment, which have all been worked out with opposing counsel,” Smith said in an email. “The larger items dealt with (1) reporting to opposing counsel and the court the methodology to locate owners and successors who are due refunds from the fund and (2) status of title to the El Camino Real property acquired with BPIF funds for parking lot purposes.”

Smith said the plaintiffs argued that the North Beach lot’s acquisition with BPIF funds was not a legitimate use of those funds.

The judge in the case had the city and the litigants meet to discuss the issues, Smith said, instead of taking them to court on a new case.

At its last meeting, the City Council diverted $700,000 to the BPIF in order to satisfy the order to refund residents who put money into it.

“We’ve taken some time to do that, with the most significant effort being dedicated to developing and implementing methodology for finding and notifying potential claimants,” Smith said. “That methodology was vetted with plaintiffs and their counsel, who concluded that it constitutes best efforts for accomplishing this. Beyond that, the City Council decided that rather than litigating the issue of whether the El Camino Real lot could be used for the restrictive purpose contemplated in the BPIF resolution, it would be better to approve a fund transfer to ‘buy out’ the BPIF fund’s interest in the lot.”

solves the case and gives the city “full latitude” to use the lot. “(City) staff estimates that the BPIF refund checks (including the additional increment for the buy-out of the El Camino Real lot) will be sent out the first week of March,” Smith said.

Trump’s Executive Order on Water Miffs OC Coastkeeper Director THE LATEST: Hours before President Donald Trump spoke to Congress in his first Presidential Address, local environmental nonprofit OC Coastkeeper sent out a press release denouncing an executive order Trump eventually signed Wednesday morning.

“President Trump just signed an executive order that seeks to dismantle the Clean Water Rule — allowing industries to profit off pollution and limiting which waters are protected,” OC Coastkeeper director Garry Brown said in the press release. “This doesn’t make sense; water does not stop flowing because of state boundaries or property lines. Eventually, all the pollution this executive order will allow would end up in our swimmable, fishable, drinkable waters.”

The order, which is available for review at www.whitehouse.gov, is intended to examine the definitions of the “Waters of the United States Rule,” which opponents to the order argue is the lifeblood to protect water from pollution. Opponents argue the

order may result in certain smaller bodies of water, which feed into larger rivers, lakes and oceans, losing formal protection from the Environmental Protection Agency.

WHAT’S NEXT: The order directs the Army Corps of Engineers and the director of the EPA to review the rule for “consistency” in order to keep the country’s water clean but at the same time spur economic growth, minimize regulatory uncertainty and show due regard for the roles of the Congress and the states under the Constitution, the order stated. —Staff

Virtual Reality Room Gives Art Students a New Medium THE LATEST: San Clemente High School teacher David Luciani recently introduced a virtual reality system to the school’s art program, which was made possible with a PTSA mini-grant. Last spring, Luciani presented his idea to principal Chris Carter and was awarded the grant to buy an HTC Vive Virtual Reality headset, a super hidefinition TV, and a portable stand. Using the Google Tilt Brush program, the students have access to include Google Earth VR, an anatomy program, and a virtual art museum. In addition to Tilt Brush, they have ZBrush, which is a professional-level digital sculpting software used by many colleges and game design companies.

“This will allow students to refine drawings to the point where they can export files to a 3D printer and see their creation come out of the digital world printed in

This resource will likely be accessible to students as they become more proficient working with the ZBrush program.

Public Safety Study to be Discussed at Financial Meeting THE LATEST: Part of the city’s agenda for the Long-Term Financial Planning workshop calls for the examination of the results of the Matrix Consulting Group study on public safety.

The City Council ordered the study last year to look at various aspects of public safety, including a separate study on code compliance.

f drawing on the walls gets children in trouble, what punitive measures are dealt for slathering a piano in color? In

this case, none.

Young kids came out to Casa Romantica on Saturday, Feb. 25, to participate in “Keys by the Sea” to paint two pianos, which will be used in a performance at noon on Sunday, March 5, at Casa Romantica.

Young musicians will perform on the pianos during the upcoming D. Yoder Family Sunday, a program that offers free admission throughout the day along with an entertainment event based on rotating themes.

The event is free to attend. SC

After squeezing into her family’s Volkswagen van and cruising over to Los Rios Park, a 6-year-old alpaca walked away with the top honor at the Fiesta Association’s Kids Pet Parade on Feb. 25.

This year’s pet parade had 11 entries, including nine canine competitors and a pair of parakeets, but it was Caramel the alpaca who won first place and will appear (with her human escorts) in the annual Swallows Day Parade on March 25.

Caramel lives with her owner Lauren Price, 12, and her family in San Juan Capistrano. Price said they adopted Caramel from a rescue in Temecula and have had her for three years now. The Price family shared some fun facts about Caramel, including that she’s potty trained (she has her own designated area), she makes a humming sound to communicate with their other alpaca, and she eats a healthy diet of weeds, Bermuda grass and a special blend of Purina alpaca chow. (Caramel rides in their VW van because they don’t have a trailer.)

Price and two of her closest friends, Emily O’Brien, 12, and Isabelle Cota, 12, both of San Juan Capistrano, participated in Saturday’s pet parade and are now invited to walk in the 59th annual Swallows Day Parade.

This year’s pet parade judges included

Jennifer Agostini, of San Clemente Veterinary Hospital; Junior Miss Fiesta Kate Pointer; Junior Señor San Juan Sami Salado; Señor San Juan Edward Beyer; and Miss Fiesta Erin Kutnick Beyer. Dana Point City Attorney Gives Sober Living Litigation Update During the City Council’s Feb. 21 meeting, City Attorney Patrick Muñoz gave an update regarding sober living homes in Dana Point.

Muñoz said a home on Santa Clara, which he said they’ve discussed before, is in the litigation process.

Muñoz said there are two structures on the property that are being utilized as sixperson operations.

“They’ve had their license reduced to six people; we’re still in litigation with them but the license has been modified,” Muñoz said.

Muñoz added that they are currently looking at four other properties in Capistrano Beach.

“We have two new cases on file, one involving New Method Wellness and another involving Sunshine Behavioral Health,” Muñoz said.

He said they believe the homes are not licensed and should be.

“We’re pursuing them for operating in a matter that’s not consistent with the licensing,” Muñoz said. —Kristina Pritchett

Daughters of the American Revolution Host President’s Day Event The San Clemente Island Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hosted a President’s Day program for Concordia Elementary School on Feb. 14. The multi-purpose room was decorated in patriotic colors, flags and balloons, and members dressed in Colonial costume. Gary Beard, portraying George Washington, told stories about the country’s first president and shared historic artifacts with the students. The organization hosted three assemblies for more than 600 children.

The superintendent’s forum is intended to give parents an overview of the state of California’s new accountability and improvement system, which will be released to the public in March, according to a press release from the district. The California School Dashboard will be published online and include data on state and local indicators, such as chronic absenteeism, graduation rates, English learner progress, student achievement, parental involvement and more.

“Ultimately, the dashboard will be utilized to measure a district’s progress as well as areas for improvement,” the release stated. “During the community forum, CUSD staff will share local indicators and priorities, and the superintendent will welcome feedback and field questions from those in attendance.”

Letters to the Editor TECHNOLOGY CREATES AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE EUGENE HALLINAN, San Clemente

Normally I’m nonplussed with the content of Jim Kempton, a guest opinion writer for the San Clemente Times. (Sorry, dude.) However, his column, “Have Loners Disappeared from the World of Social Media?” in the paper’s Feb. 23-March 1 edition, is simply awesome. A grand slam in the last inning of the World Series, an overtime bicycle kick goal to win the Word Cup—it was brilliant.

We have children, and often they cannot pull themselves away from such highly addictive electronic mediums. Whether it is Google, Facebook, Apple’s Siri, Amazon, etc., each of these entities are amazing in that they have contributed on a positive note to such things as reducing crime (think global system for mobile tracking) and creating more awareness and connectedness among people. On a not-so-positive note is what Jim alludes to: the devices are also isolating, impersonal (it is actually an electronic medium, not a human), and at the end of the day, they are machines.

What people may not realize is two of these entities listed, Google and Facebook, create approximately 95 percent or more of their revenue solely from advertising, and these revenues are simply huge.

For example, the combined revenue for Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon is approximately $470 billion and bigger than most countries’ gross domestic product (GDP). If these four companies’ combined revenue represented a country’s GDP, they would be tied for No. 24 on the list— same GDP as Belgium!

And to show you how recently this change has occurred, when our first child was born in 2004, these companies’ combined revenue was $18 billion.

With the dawning of artificial intelligence, we will see a dramatic increase of technology in our lives in the next 10-20 years. These are tectonic shifts in our society. Just Google search—yes, I understand the irony—#FutureTechnology and the results will show “Singapore smart cities self-driving taxis” and “Amazon Kiva robots.”

In summary, it is astounding. This is the reality of today. But will it solve all of humanity’s problems? No. Can we live without them today? Yes. Tomorrow?

Maybe.

Let your kids experience technology, but not be owned by it. The massive creativity around and in technology is addressing some unique challenges in society and life. However, it will never replace a walk on the beach, holding hands with a loved one or watching your kid play chess or build Legos.

A SAN CLEMENTE EMERGENCY ROOM WOULD SAVE LIVES FRANK MCDERMOTT, San Clemente

On President’s Day, I had an experience that required a visit to the emergency room for a heart-related episode.

When all was said and done, I had been checked, tested, probed, examined and medicated. Over all, the medical staff was professional, competent and respectful.

My only complaint was the wait. I live in San Clemente, and the emergency room was in Mission Viejo. I drove to my family doctor, whose office is right across the street from the building that housed the former Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in San Clemente.

My doctor said he wanted me to go to the emergency room in Mission Viejo, but not by myself. I had to call my daughter to take me there.

When we got to the emergency room, it was jammed; it was estimated there were about 80 to 100 people in there and it didn’t seem to let up.

We got there at about 1 p.m. I had to stay overnight. Got to my room after 11 p.m. To me, it seems to beg the question, “What is the reasoning that San Clemente doesn’t have an emergency room?” It takes about an extra five precious minutes to get to Mission to an already filled-tocapacity emergency room.

WOMEN’S MARCH: A PROGRESSIVE PLOY JESSICA DE GREE, San Clemente

Just one day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, men and women worldwide participated in what they called a Women’s March. These marchers claimed to raise awareness of disrespect toward women. However, instead of a march for all women, this march was clearly a march for progressivism.

Pro-life groups such as Students for Life of America and New Wave Feminists, after asking to be partners or sponsors of the event, were declined. By excluding these groups from sponsorship, the Women’s March was much less of a protest for all women, and more of a protest for prochoice progressivism.

These marchers equated the ability for women to be able to choose to abort pregnancies with women’s rights. By falsely doing so, they withheld the platform’s message of inclusivity and solidarity from people who do not support abortion.

In the Women’s March platform, found on their website, the protesters encourage healthy familial environments for women.

They rightly argue that women should not accept violence toward their bodies in any way. But the platform also calls for the continuation of federal funding to Planned Parenthood—an organization that provides abortion services. So, although the platform initially seems to have a great message (of women’s rights), the specific policies within the platform (pro-choice) suggest otherwise.

It seems strange that this event happened right after Trump’s inauguration. If it was truly a march that highlighted real problems women have been facing for a while, why had it not happened sooner?

Why had it not happened after Bill Clinton’s scandals? Or Chris Brown’s domestic violence? The march was much less than a march for basic human rights; it was a political scheme directly attacking both Donald Trump’s presidency and conservative values (both different things).

Whenever politicians take advantage of natural disasters for their own benefit, people always seem to be dismayed.

They argue it is wrong to use the victim’s experience to better the politician’s own standings. In the Women’s March, the organizers used the abuse of women— the emotions women have been holding inside—for a progressive political ploy.

This abuse of women and of their emotions contradicts the march’s end. It is a sad thing that this march has misled some people from expressing their pain.

Public Safety is Front and Center for San Clemente

T

o this City Council and the city of San Clemente, there are no issues of greater importance than that of public safety. To enjoy the beauty and friendship of our community, it is absolutely critical that we as residents feel safe and secure, and that we take strong steps toward addressing any shortfalls in this area. For this, we rely heavily on resident feedback to understand where we should be focused.

CITY COUNCIL Over the past few CORNER years, we have received

By Tim Brown more and more residents’ complaints about group homes and vacation rentals in residential areas. In response, the city conducted meetings with residents, held a public safety workshop and eventually made modifications to our ordinances to restrict this use to areas more fitting. A sober living forum was also held in San Clemente with Congressman Darrell Issa, California Assemblyman Bill Brough, State Senator Pat Bates, myself and other experts, who discussed proposed federal legislation that could help.

The panel also discussed other solutions that could be pursued statewide and locally. In following up, the city has sent support letters for the federal legislation, increased police patrols in targeted areas, enhanced code compliance staff hours and other measures to help alleviate issues that our residents said were affecting their quality of life and peace of mind.

We also heard frequently from residents about homelessness, soliciting and trespassing. In response, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) in San Clemente created a new special enforcement team called “TRIP,” which stands for Targeting Reduction Investigation Prevention. This is an outgrowth of a strategy deployed last year to deal with the problems at Ocean View Plaza shopping center. We were successful at remedying issues there, so we are utilizing the approach in other areas of need. The goal is to target problem areas of the city and apply a “zero tolerance” policy to issues such as trespassing in business areas, illegal encampments in canyons or near the beach, chronic erratic behavior, crime and drug dealing. This team does not require additional staffing and is a reallocation of existing personnel. The team’s hours and locations are never disclosed, but the early results are promising.

Last fall, the City Council also commissioned the “Matrix Public Safety Study,” done by Matrix Consulting, to dig deep into residents’ concerns about OCSD’s

deputy staffing and assess our city’s current public safety model and whether changes are needed. In particular, the Matrix study looked at all facets of our police services locally, including patrol, investigations, enforcement, community support, crime prevention, drug education, parking control and more. We hope, at the end of the day, that we can have greater understanding on all fronts on how to improve public safety as a community.

The city will have the results of the Matrix Study to share with the public during the first week of March at the Long Term Financial Plan meeting on March 2 at 4 p.m. at City Hall, City Council Chambers at 100 Avenida Presidio, San Clemente, CA 92672. I welcome you to attend.

At the Movies: Hollywood is Not Just ‘La La Land’

n what was quite possibly the most unexpected, madcap incident to ever happen at the Academy Awards, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway erroneously announced La La Land as the Best Picture of 2016 last weekend, when in fact the real winner was Moonlight.

A mistake was made with the envelopes, but the controversy was still born.

Nevertheless, we do have another series of award-winning films from the night, including La La and Moonlight, to revisit

or watch for the first time in what looks like another dry month for new releases.

Both the light-hearted musical—whose actual wins included Best Actress (Emma Stone) and Best Director (Damien Chazelle)—and the coming-of-age drama—also winner of Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) are both obviously stellar and quality choices for a movie night. For family dramas, Manchester by the Sea took home Best Actor (Casey Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay, and Fences won Best Supporting Actress (Viola Davis). Both are my choices

for a bittersweet evening.

Arrival was a uniquely crafted sci-fi drama that won Best Sound Editing. Disney’s liveaction version of The Jungle Book took home Best Visual Effects, much deservedly, and their other feature, Zootopia, won for Best Animated Picture. Though Silence was one of my favorites of last year, another Andrew Garfield-lead historical piece, Hacksaw Ridge, took home Oscars for Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Oscar season is finally over, but the season to watch quality movies is always around. SC

ndeed, sweetness is abundant at the Sugar Shack. The staff lovingly interacts with patrons as if they were all regulars.

The dishes are tenderly prepared as if mom or pop made them. And the roadside diner feel provides a sweet reminder of simpler times.

Now that’s not to say the food is delicate.

In fact, Sugar Shack’s breakfast and lunch offerings come in heaping portions that’ll surely let you skip whatever meal was next.

The Zorba is one such concoction.

Slices of gyro meat are mixed in with scrambled eggs, meaty mushrooms, onions,

bell peppers and floes of feta cheese. Hash browns are cooked to perfection—crunchy on the outside, piping hot on the inside, and just the right size. Sourdough toast, grilled on the skillet, is imbued with butter and a flavor that only comes from cross-pollinating delicious breakfast stuffs on a skillet. The bite, altogether, is creamy with the feta and egg, smoky and rich from the mushroom and lamb, and, yes, slightly sweet from the pepper and onion.

Young author debuts children’s book about leprechauns

A

t 7 years old, Levi Johnson’s fascination with leprechauns grew so much that he wanted to contribute to his favorite bit of folklore.

My Little Leprechaun is a lighthearted tale of a boy and his leprechaun friend, who explore playful adventures all within the boy’s home.

“I would play leprechaun, and I told my mom to write everything down,” Levi said of his inspiration for the book. “I wanted to explain about the leprechauns.”

Levi said his fascination with the evanescent creature of Irish lore began in preschool.

“Levi, when he was younger, thought he was a real live leprechaun,” Christa said, adding the reasons for this belief are left to the innocence of his young imagination.

Students Make a Difference in Community-Wide Prevention

an Clemente High School students, through their participation in the Wellness & Prevention Coalition, play an important role in improving the health and wellness of our community.

Several high school students have helped define the strategies that coalition members use to improve the health of the community. These committed young people serve to inspire their peers to make positive choices and help to increase the possibility of community change.

These students started SC SHIFT, a high school WELLNESS AND youth leadership club.

Prevention Coalition in an effort to identify substance use issues among our youth.

The leaders have selected reducing underage drinking as their primary goal for the next year. To accomplish this, the teens have developed strategies that increase social and emotional skills in young people, inspire positive communication in the home, reduce the availability of alcohol to minors and advocate for policies that help young people choose healthy behaviors.

An important guiding principle behind SC SHIFT strategies are recent gains in knowledge about the importance of brain development and the need to delay alcohol use until young people reach the age of 21, as the teen brain is much more vulnerable to addiction. In fact, young people who drink before the age of 15 are four times more likely to become alcoholics, according to the National Institute of Health.

Each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die because of underage drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes; 1,600 as a result of homicides; 300 from suicide, as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns and drownings, according to the National Highway

Transportation Safety Administration and Centers for Disease Control. SC SHIFT youth would like this number to be lower.

When I sit in on SC SHIFT meetings, I am impressed by the critical thinking skills of our youth, their passion for making a difference and their dedication to the wellbeing of their peers. Soon the entire community will begin to witness their hard work in media campaigns, community presentations and changes in attitudes toward underage alcohol use. I believe these youths will “shift” the actions of San Clemente youth and adults to positive choices and healthy behaviors.

The SC SHIFT president, Jonathon Magana, invites middle school and high school youth to join the coalition. Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. at San Clemente High School, located at 700 Avenida Pico. For more information, email susan@wellnessandpreventionsanclemente. Amara Devericks and Carolina Moreno both had successful 2017 seasons come to an end after qualifying for the prestigious CIF State Wrestling Championship tournament in Visalia on Feb. 25.

Devericks, who placed second in her division at the CIF-SS Individual Championships and third at the CIF-SS Masters meet one week later, advanced to the consolation bracket at State.

Moreno also advanced to the consolation bracket at State after placing third at CIF-SS Individuals and seventh at CIF-SS Masters.

Senior Kyle Marshall continued his standout season on the wrestling mats with a fourth-place showing in the 190-pound weight division at the CIF-SS Masters tournament on Feb. 25. His placement qualified him for the CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield this weekend.

Marshall, who finished first in individual CIF-SS qualifying, went 4-1 overall at the Masters tournament and could have placed as high as third if not for a broken finger.

REDZONE ELITE FOOTBALL CLINICS OPEN RedZone Elite, an organization that provides performance and training for youth football players in South Orange County, has begun its winter training clinics and is gearing up for the spring season.

Those interested in participating in RedZone Elite’s clinics, which are held every Saturday at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano, will receive specific technique training for all positions. The clinics are open to youth football players from grades 6-11.

The RedZone Elite coaching staff consists of coaches with high-level college and NFL experience. RedZone Elite also stresses the importance of leadership skills and life lessons through its instruction.

The Bishop Amat girls basketball team got off to a blistering start in the first quarter of its CIF-SS Division 3AA quarterfinal game against visiting San Clemente on Feb. 22.

Bishop Amat went on a 17-1 run to open the game and the Tritons could not recover. The Tritons played catch-up all night but lost 47-30.

The loss ends a deep postseason run by the Tritons, who placed second in the South Coast League. After a first-round bye, San Clemente pulled off a last-second victory over Trabuco Hills in the second round to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

Moore, a heavyweight, went 3-3 over the stretch and narrowly missed out on advancing to State. Moore placed 10th, and only

San Clemente junior Alex Pak battled a tough Western Hills Country Club course and a talented field at the Servite Invitational golf tournament on Feb. 27. After carding a first-round score of 73 (+1), Pak found himself in a playoff to determine the individual champion.

The standout junior defeated Foothill’s Brennan Hellmers on the first playoff hole by making par, which earned Pak his first individual title of the young season.

Pak had to battle the weather and the course, which measured nearly 6,800 yards. The large preseason tournament featured 114 golfers.

Pak is coming off an offseason that saw him finish as the low junior at the San Clemente City Championships.

As a team, the Tritons placed 16th. Hostteam Servite won the event.

RedZone Elite currently has one 7-on7 passing league team and plans on adding additional teams in the near future.

ALL-STAR TEAM WINS AYSO AREA TOURNEY The San Clemente-based AYSO Region 111 U10 All-Star team defeated the All-Stars from San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point on Feb. 12 to capture the AYSO Area Tournament Championship.

The San Clemente squad bested the field of 18 All-Star teams at the tournament, which was held at Lake Forest Sports Park.

The team includes: Claire Massamiri, Emry Insley, Isabella Zerrer, Keira Tuomi, Melissa Tapia, Juliana Herson, Ashleigh Burns, Joy Carney, Maggie Campbell and Hannah Wood. The team is coached by Kristin Massamiri and Nicki Insley.

Pipeline of History Organizer to spend year preparing surf history exhibit

I

n 1962, Joel Smith was sent on a bus touring the United States. It was a way to provide adult supervision for him while his mother recovered from illness.

On that trip, Smith visited Huntington Beach, right in the middle of surfing’s most dynamic explosion of culture and competition. Originally from New Jersey, that’s all it took for Smith to be hooked.

Now, Smith is trying to teach people around the world more about the sport’s history with an exhibit titled “On the Origin of Surfing,” in collaboration with the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center.

Smith and illustrator Ron Croci created the book The Illustrated Atlas of Surfing History, which is the basis of the exhibit.

Smith said he would like to bring as many interactive features to the exhibit as possible, such as a simulation of riding a wave on old surfboards and replicas of artifacts from surfing history.

“I’d like to bring craftsmen who do reproductions of surfboards and catamaran and artifacts,” he said. “That way people can touch and see what it feels like, but I’m hoping we can … tell the story about what surfing was like in the beginning.”

The experience through surf history will start from the Polynesian innovation and

pre-modern era versions of the sport. It will then explore the cultivation of surf in Hawaii in the late 1800s and beyond, all the way to the 1960s.

“We’re going to deal with how wave riding began, and we’re going back to 3,000 B.C. and when early man started to deal with the ocean,” Smith said. “A lot has been written about the modern era and 1960s, and very little has been written about the early years.

We think it’s a story that’s compelling, and a lot of the things that were true in early Hawaii are still true today. The cultural (im-

portance) of surfing hasn’t changed.”

It won’t be until sometime this winter or possibly early 2018 when the exhibit will be ready. Smith is in the process of raising as much money for it as possible and conceptualizing the project.

“A lot depends on how much money we’re going to raise,” Smith said. “We have set up for about a year from now, and I’ve just put together some promotional material.”

Smith, admittedly, is not a seasoned museum curator or exhibit promoter—he said this is his first foray. The project could have various complex components or could be a more mobile exhibit that can travel easily.

Smith’s background consists of developing television shows on various parts of history. He said he relocated to California in 1980 and has surfed on every continent except Antarctica.

“The exhibit is going to be for people who surf and those who don’t or haven’t yet,” Smith said. “It will detail the history and point out things that people could relate to. The message I want to give to people is that it’s more than a sport. It is the basis of a global tribe, and I wanted to explore how that came about.”

As the 2017 World Surf League Championship Tour season dawns, San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino is more than ready to rise and shine

I

n less than two weeks, Kolohe Andino will once again steady himself and set his sights on winning a world title. He has had the better part of two months to cruise with friends, go fishing, take in a couple hockey games and even get properly barreled at the local beach breaks. But it’s game time now.

Last year Andino finished fourth in the world, the best result of his highly visible career. Could vying for a title be that far off? Given his matured headspace, abundant talent and dedication, he appears to be on the right path.

“Before last year, I never really put in the actual true work—like eating all the right food, spending a lot of time at the gym, and all of the above,” said Andino. “Before that, I never really knew how to handle those sort of [high pressure] moments.”

When it comes to putting in the “actual true work,” Andino’s learned to block out a lot of the distractions and focus on what he needs to do to improve.

“I get up at 4 a.m., spend an hour on the Pilates reformer. I got a little mental meditation thing that takes about 20 minutes,” said Andino. “Then I usually go for a surf.

I’ve been training up in Huntington. Then I go surf again. After that, I try and keep my eyes open until 7:30, maybe eat some

The surf wasn’t exactly pumping, but then again, it wasn’t raining either. With a playful, two- to three-foot northwest swell offering up some fun peaks up and down the beach, Schilling got to work early and never looked back.

But it’s more than just the physicality of being a top-flight athlete that’s resonating with Andino lately. He’s long had the talent to win heats, but the mental component has been where he’s admittedly struggled to put the pieces together in the past.

The win was made that much sweeter considering who Schilling out-paced in the final. Matched up against fellow San Clemente rippers Crosby Colapinto and Liam Murray, as well as Levi Slawson from Encinitas (who made the finals in Open Men’s as well), the talent level was no joke.

Schilling found the better waves, put the pieces together and came away with an impressive victory.

All told, it was a great weekend for local surfers. Kade Matson took out the win in the Open Men’s division. Hayden Rodgers and Brayden Burch made the final in Open Boys’, while Cannon Carr and Alex Guild finaled in Mini Groms. On the ladies’ side of the draw, Samantha Sibley made the finals in the Open Women’s and Open Girls’ divisions, while Bella Kenworthy and Sawyer

“I’m an absolute student of the sport,” he said. “I watched this Mick Fanning interview and he said he had one event in Tahiti where … in the last-second he needed a nine, and boom, he got a 9.5. And he said that during that he was trying to remember all the hard work he’d done, so I

thought I’d try and do that—because I like Mick a lot.

“In those same kind of moments [in 2016], I felt like I had worked as hard or harder than anyone else. I thought, ‘OK, this is going to work out, and if it doesn’t work out I’ll get back to the grindstone and figure it out.’ Thankfully the waves came,” continued Andino.

Dogged persistence is also a big part of Andino’s equation. He could very well be jaded and skip practice surfs at home when it’s rainy and the water looks like chocolate milk; instead he’s out there every day refining his act.

“There’s this turn that I can’t do for some reason. It’s like a backside/frontside turn.

Basically, you just go off the bottom, off the top, but you throw spray, it looks powerful.

You don’t slide or lose speed. And I can’t do that turn. I see kids can do it, that’s the weird thing,” joked Andino.

Understanding what a fickle mistress confidence can be, he has a wariness of analyzing too much video.

“I only like watching the good stuff because it creates confidence, and sometimes I don’t have much of that,” he laughed.

The 2017 World Surf League Championship Tour season kicks off in earnest in Australia with the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Held at the warm-water pointbreak of Snapper Rocks, last year Andino finished third in the contest to get his season off on a good foot. The wave suits his explosive, lightning-fast approach. It offers up sections for airs, turns and tubes—a lethal combination for someone as spry as Andino.

“I think once you realize how lucky you are, you become grateful,” he said. “When you realize how lucky you are, you begin to work real hard at your goals or whatever you have planned for your life. Humble, grateful, hard-working… a man… that’s how I’d like to be remembered.”

Win, lose or draw on the world’s stage this year, Andino’s a hero and role model in his hometown and that’s a heck of an accomplishment. SC
